QUALITY AND CRAFTSMANSHIP
THE MAKING OF A PHILADELPHIA ICON DESIGN AND MATERIALS are the foundation of beautiful, quality furniture, but hand craftsmanship determines the outcome. In an industry crowded with products of varying quality, Kindel Furniture company stands out for its commitment to hand craftsmanship. Kindel is renowned for its ability to recreate the treasures of the past at the highest levels of quality, authenticity, and scholarship. This year, Kindel is making an impact on Philadelphia design with the limited edition of the Philadelphia High Chest. The original Philadelphia High Chest was made for William and Mary Turner (circa 1765 and 1780) and descended by inheritance to the Van Pelt Family. It was acquired by Henry Francis du Pont in 1929 and is now displayed in the Port Royal Parlor at Winterthur. Embellished with motifs from Chippendale’s The Gentleman and Cabinet-Maker’s Director, the High Chest has been celebrated by author Joseph Downs as the “highest development of the Philadelphia Chippendale school of furniture” for its outstanding qualities of design and carving. In November 2015, Kindel will introduce its limited edition of the Philadelphia High Chest, which honors the original craftsmanship processes. Due to the complex cabinetry and more than 100 hours of hand-carving per chest, Kindel will produce a limited edition of 10 available for purchase at Studio 882. Each piece will be identified with the purchaser’s name and year of purchase. Photos will be taken of each chest in all stages of creation from raw lumber to finished product. It will be a celebration of a century of American craftsmanship and an outward example of the important relationship between Kindel, Studio 882, and Winterthur.

TRANSITIONAL In this transitional home, the focus is on timeless forms, rooted in the heritage of traditional furniture, yet interpreted with unexpected materials and functionality that suits today’s informal lifestyles. Classics with a wry designer twist. Polished but never prim.
Every piece of furniture is distinctive yet familiar, as though it has always belonged in the room. The result is an uncommon sense of longevity.

TRADITIONAL Traditional furniture illustrates that excellence is not limited to one era. Although these designs are part of history, true elegance and luxury are timeless and able to span centuries, cultures, and lifestyles. Which is why traditional furniture is just as at ease in today’s homes as it is in ancient estates where the originals are housed.
Traditional furniture, like the Chippendale chinoiserie commode pictured above, preserves the integrity of the original by following the old-world tradition of furniture making.

Mixing and layering patterns is the great way to get a designer look. But pattern is no longer just for fabrics. Pattern is making unexpected statements in case goods—from side tables and cabinets to accessories like mirrors and hardware.
THE STATEMENT LIGHT
Incorporating a statement piece is a great way to express your individual style. Nothing’s more popular this year than statement lighting. Whether it’s a sculptural chandelier, an unusual sconce, or an unexpected table lamp, statement lights look beautiful on and off.
4

Traditionally, blue has been used as a calming color. But vibrant and saturated versions of the hue—from rich teals to deep navy— are dominating the market. These saturated blues have become a staple in everything, from fabrics and wallpapers to accessories and even furniture finishes. Blue pairs so well with other colors and neutrals, it’s a natural fit to many interiors.
UNEXPECTED PATTERN 3
4
Rustic, reclaimed wood with gray, cerused oak, or unfinished undertones has been popular for the last few years, but warm, rich wood is on trend. Use these rich tones to add a touch of elegance and a sense of history to your space. We love the warm wood tones of the recessed, molded, and mitered squares of the Bevel Low Cabinet.

PRECIOUS METALS 5
HAND-PAINTED DETAILS 6
Metallics bring neutral nuance to any room. Add subtle illumination with the bold gleam of rich bronze, the soft luster of sparkly silver, or the sultry glow of champagne gold. This year customers want a clear sense of the hand of the maker. Hand-painted details are everywhere from fabrics to ceramics and furniture and add a personal touch to your decor.

There’s no doubt that mixing different patterns and textures can give your home a fresh and interesting new look. In fact, playing with pattern is a great way to showcase your personality. Even better—you can experiment with pattern without making serious or expensive changes to your decor. Here are 6 expert tips to get you started on your own well-designed look.
DECIDE ON A COLOR PALETTE Mixing patterns that fall within the same color scheme is a great way to create a cohesive look. A fluid floral and a handsome geometric pattern can look great together if the colors relate.
T WO
VARY THE SCALE Mix big patterns with small patterns to give your space balance. For example, try a large floral pattern with a stripe or other geometric repeat.
THREE
VARY THE LOCATION Don’t clump your patterns all together in the same spot. Think about the pattern on your floors (hardwood, area rugs, etc), on your walls (artwork, wallpaper, draperies), on your ceiling (molding, chandeliers), and at eye level with your upholstery, throw pillows, and casegoods.
FOUR
ADD SOLIDS Adding chunks of solid color to a room can do two things: it helps the patterns you’ve selected really pop, and it brings a sense of balance to the room. And, don’t forget neutrals. They can be a great solid background for your prints.
FIVE
GET CREATIVE Get creative with things like trim, fringe, and nailheads. These can add pattern in interesting, unexpected ways. The best part? This doesn’t require you to commit to a bold, overall pattern for your upholstery or drapery.
SIX
THINK BEYOND FABRICS Casegoods and accessories are an excellent way to incorporate pattern in your room. The Celestial Chest makes a unique patterned statement in any room. The subtlety dimensioned face of galaxy-like swirls are framed in walnut and gold leaf. The circle door pull adds another layer of pattern for just the right finishing touch.

TIPS & TRENDS
SYMMETR Y
Have you ever walked into a room that just felt right? It might be because of its gorgeous color scheme or fabulous furniture, but it also has a lot to do with the room’s symmetry. Symmetrical design impacts our subconscious, and we find these spaces more restful and peaceful than asymmetrical ones. But why is this? The answer is that symmetrical balance is all around us. When we see
symmetry used in interior design, we’re picking up on a familiar pattern and are able to process the individual elements of the room faster. As a result, we tend to find these rooms more pleasing. Fortunately, it’s easy to bring symmetry into your home with a few design tricks. And, the best part is that they work for every design style from traditional to modern!
CREATING SYMMETRY First, find the room’s focal point. It should be what immediately draws the eye, and it should refer to the room’s core function (the fireplace in the living room, the bed in a master bedroom, the dining table in a dining room, etc.). Use this focal point as the center of your symmetrical design.
Take a step back. Really. To achieve balance and symmetry, you may need to take a step back, then adjust the placement of individual items. For example, are the sofas equal distance from the fireplace? It’s helpful to view the room not just on a detailed level, but as a whole and from a distance.
Then, balance the weight. Bring balance to the room by placing furniture of similar weights on either side of your focal point. These objects can be heavier, like two sofas flanking a fireplace, or groupings of lighter weight objects, such as matching table lamps on each nightstand with coordinating artwork above.
Add some asymmetry. Can there be too much symmetry? Yes. Adding asymmetry brings visual interest and a more relaxed feel to your home. Asymmetry design elements can be big or small, and it’s easiest to think about using distinct objects that are nonetheless similar in mass or shape.
