In the heart of Duisburg, a post-industrial town in the Ruhr area, the König-Heinrich Square offered an ambivalent space, half main square and half quiet little park. It had broad, muchfrequented lawn spaces and it adjoined a lively pedestrian zone. With a series of new amenities under construction (a convention center, a casino and a shopping center), the city envisioned re-arranging this precinct to make it more urban and representative. The landscape architects of Agence Ter won the subsequent competition with a project inspired by the luxuriant green of the existing square. They considered that an ample expanse of lawn in no way conflicted with the location at the center of town, and was even a major luxury in so dense an urban fabric; they therefore preserved the existing grass expanse. At the same time they refused to be satisfied with grass pure and simple. By subtly multiplying and refining their horizons and adjusting heights and border lines, they contrived to create a calm, elegant space that was both simple in concept and easy to maintain. Thus the square is occupied, at its center, by ‘raised pastures’ whose metal edges create an effect of levitation with the shadows they throw. At night, this floating effect is emphasized by the lighting arrangements, which consist of illuminated bands set into the ground beneath the overhanging metal edges. At intervals along these edges are benches of white Corian that invite you to sit and watch the people passing between and across swaths of green – which in spring are made colorful by crocuses planted in the grass.

Castellfollit de la Roca, one of the smallest municipalities of Spain with a surface of 0,7km2, is located in the confluence of the Fluvià River and the Turonell River occupying the summit of a quaternary basaltic formation. The buildings are situated at the limit of the vertical basaltic formation’s columns forming an indissoluble unit. The Filladores Place defines its space by means of textures and the use of the limits. A limit of sculpted black concrete embraces the place’s vacuum of basaltic cobbles forming a space that seems to be carved in the Castellfollit’s own basaltic formation. Designed as a great public space, the square is divided in three areas according to their use and location. On the one hand the great esplanade paved as support of dynamic activities of great appraisal, concerts, Sardanas’ dance, major parties, etc. On the other hand the edge of concrete as static space, of contemplation, of viewing-point to the landscape. And finally the area near the existing building, as place of traffic, access to the housings of the existing building and connection with the low level of the parking separate from the rest of square by means of benches – lamps – holes with three oaks. An unique lamppost provide the general lighting.

In this winning design for the Hill, the square becomes the main square of Tilburg once more; lively and relaxing, modern and green. A venue for cultural festivals, fairs and a homage to William II. A square, but green! The layout of the square is simple: a triangular shaped platform with lime trees set in a triangular space. The diverging shape of the square is defined by its surroundings and accentuated by a planting of plane trees along the edges. The triangular shape of the platform molds itself into the available space and is a reference to the rural origin of the square. The materials for the square are chosen in such a way that they easily connect with the surroundings and the new design for the city ring. The platform has lots of space and offers many opportunities for contemporary uses. With the chosen materials, the ‘stage’ is a hybrid between an urban center and a green oasis.

there in the future are all designed to offer services and to constitute links connecting with the community on subjects related to art and social contexts. The square is connected by a pedestrian path to a city square and the entrance gate to the university. Since the square is meant to facilitate intensive congregation of youth and students, the preferred solution was one in which the area allocated to vegetation is limited. Also, since the square is the element that meets the façades of all the buildings, defines the urban space around them and connects them both physically and visually, its design in elements of bare concrete reinforces and accentuates what they have in common. The square is designed as a carpet of integrated strips of concrete and of vegetation, with a number of trees and concrete benches at its center. The vegetation in the strips will consist of lawn, equisetophyta about a meter in height, and seasonal plants to be changed three times a year.

«Floor Works», a garden open to the public which surrounds a company headquarters in Geneva, is the exterior equivalent of the «Wall Works», a collection of works by contemporary artists including James Turrell, Cindy Sherman and Sol LeWitt which

adorn

the

building.

Floor Works is what is produced by working the ground, that is to say by the manipulation – the gardening – of the available mineral or living materials. The project devises a unique means of support, which frees itself from the constraints linked to the many functional elements that emerge here and there, by covering them. Only one inert material, Cor-ten steel, has been chosen for manipulation. Laid out in successive strips, this red steel floor is folded or distorted according to the topography and the structures that need to be enclosed. It covers the entire garden. The edges of each panel are cut and folded, creating « shapes »; some of these provide support for climbing plants while others become seats, that can be occupied by people. The layout is completed with some tall trees on the edges of the site, so as to consolidate the pre-existing verdant setting.

Banyoles’ old town used to be a deteriorated area in which vehicles and pedestrians cohabitated around a urban system of narrow streets and old sidewalks. The irrigation canals that originally were clean had become part of the sewer system of the city. Around the Central Square there were also sidewalks in which cars parked randomly. The process was to “pedestrianize” the whole area, removing all the old sidewalks. The new intervention is made with travertine stone. This calcareous stone has always been present in the city’s subsoil. All the enigmatic buildings, churches, medieval houses or monuments

were

also

raised

with

travertine.

The departing point is to cover the Central Square (the most relevant part of the project) using a tessellation of travertine. The proliferation of this tiling arrives to the streets and minor

squares

in

different

phases

of

the

project.

On the other hand, the irrigation system is uncovered intermittently across the pedestrian ways.

Maria Theresien Straße by Alleswirdgut Landscape Architecture: Alleswirdgut Location: Innsbruck, Austria Competition: 2006 Construction: 11/2008-2009 Area: 7500m²

A redesigning of Maria-Theresien-Straße that does justice to the

significance that the street has in the townscape of Innsbruck: the goal was to create an urban site with a rich atmosphere that invites strolling, hanging out, and meeting

33

people. The identity of the site derives from the tension between urbanity and a panoramic view into nature, between past and future, between a specific character and a connective function in the urban structure of Innsbruck. Two defining materials, granite and brass, balance these dualities in the redesigning: a slab carpet of four different types of granite creates a coherent square surface, and a network of brass-colored ground plates with street furniture growing up from it defines the square area proper in the middle of the street. At night, the walking zones alongside the house faรงades are brightly lit, while low-set lighting in the middle of the square enables a view of the mountain silhouette and the stars above.

P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center 22-25 Jackson Avenue 718-784-2084 Long Island City 2008 Young Architects Program WORK Architecture Company, PF1 (Public Farm One) June 20-September 15, 2008 The winner of the 2008 MoMA/P.S.1 Young Architects Program is WORK Architecture Company from New York. The purpose of the program is to provide young talent in architecture with a chance to prepare and present architectural solutions for a specific site. This year, five finalists selected by a closed nomination process were asked to present an urban landscape for the large entrance courtyard of P.S.1, with the allotted project budget of $70,000. Design essentials included shade, water, seating, and bar areas. PF1 (Public Farm One) is an urban farm concept that evokes the look of a flying carpet landing in the P.S.1 courtyard. Constructed from large cardboard tubes, its top surface will be a working farm, blooming with a variety of vegetables and plants. The structure will create a textured, colorful, and constantly changing surface in contrast with P.S.1’s angular concrete and gravel courtyard. PF1 will work as an interactive bridge between outside and inside, creating multiple zones of activity including swings, fans, sound effects, innovative seating areas, and a refreshing pool at its center. The installation will be a living structure made from inexpensive and sustainable materials recyclable after its use at P.S.1.

Square Depression by Bruce Nauman Design: Bruce Nauman Location: Münster, Germany Construction: 2007

Square depression is a project, which was originaly designed in 1977, when Burce Nauman was invited among nine other artists by Kaspar König to do a sculpture for an open space. It was built 30 years later in the campus of the university’s department of natural sciences Munster. Square depression is an inverted pyramid, ‘walk in’ sculpture made of white concrete. The aim was to create a space, where one could experience a feeling of being isolated, helpless and alone.
