Fall is a time of transition, the time of passage from summer into winter. One of the definitions of transition is “a passing from one activity or place to another.” In music, a transition is a passage connecting two sections of a composition. While summer is transitioning into winter, my life is transitioning from staying at home working part-time for my husband’s business to working fulltime on staff at Gateway Church as the Pastor of Women’s Ministry. This is true change, and it’s happening about as fast as how a fall day in Texas changes from being 85 degrees with sunny skies to being cold with grey skies, 30 mph winds and the first fall frost. And while it has been very abrupt, my transition has been as welcomed and refreshing as a breath of frosty air after a long, hot August. If we’re really listening for the Lord’s voice, He will ready our spirits for transition and make us aware when change is in the air. Several months before my position at Gateway opened up, there was an unrest in me to do something different. I had always found great fulfillment in managing and billing for our family business, but now, the duties that had once excited me became boring, and I resented having to do them. Days spent totally alone while my husband was at work left me feeling lonely—I missed people. My heart was for ministry, but I had a very real responsibility to keep our business running. Although I felt a nudging within me to hire someone to do my job, I hesitated because I didn’t know who to trust for the position. As my husband and I were praying about hiring someone, our accountant mentioned a lady’s name to me in passing. I immediately knew she was the person for the job, so we hired her. I now realize that I was unsettled because I needed to turn my present situation loose before I could take hold of my future. The Lord was taking me out of the old and bringing me into the new season of my life. Much like Abraham, God often calls us to leave where we are and transition to another place even without knowing where we’re going. But, God only takes us out to bring us to “a place which He has destined” (Heb 11:8, AMP). God’s promises and changes are always good, and our faith to obey them brings reward and inheritance. This transition in my life hasn’t come easy. I miss my house, and there are days when it’s quite evident that it misses me. The clean laundry often stays on the guest bed for days waiting to be folded, and my husband jokes around saying, “When you went to work, I didn’t know that it meant the kitchen would close.” After eight months of juggling a new schedule, I’m beginning to define priorities, create a routine and actually cook a meal at least three times a week. It seems this time of transition with so many changes has eased me into the next part of the composition of my life, and I can’t wait to see what God has in store for me next!

WELCOMING AUTUMN In our last issue, we asked our readers how they like to welcome the fall. Crisp air, vibrant colors and delightful scents make autumn our readers favorite time of year.
One of my favorite ways to welcome autumn is to go and scout around my city for seasonal changes in the scenery. I take pictures of anything that catches my eye. After I develop my photos, I use them to create my own personal postcards. Then, I go sit in a park or in my backyard enjoying the fall breeze while I write encouraging notes to my family and friends. ReGena Nixon—Fort Worth, Texas
I
like to welcome fall with a great wreath to hang on the front door made with wax fruit (apples, pomegranates, grapes) and fall leaves. I also can’t resist putting a few pumpkins on the porch! Julie Johnson—Wichita Falls, Texas
Fall happens to be my favorite time of year. Because I teach preschool, I welcome fall by decorating my classroom and home with fall colors and scents. I love to scent my room with MacIntosh from the Yankee Candle Company. Every year, I take my class to the pumpkin patch to pick out pumpkins, drink apple cider and walk through a corn maze. It puts everyone in the fall spirit. On my own time, I go to bonfires, go on hayrides, and of course, eat lots of s’mores. This has been a tradition since I was a teen with my youth group. It’s relaxing to see the many colors of the trees. It reminds me of our Creator and how change can bring about something beautiful. Renee Fishburne—Dover, Delaware
DO YOU HAVE ANY UNIQUE FAMILY TRADITIONS? Share some of your ideas with us! Email your answers to experiences@gatewaypeople.com and you’ll be entered in a drawing for a $25 gift card to Passages (the Gateway bookstore).
Fall is an awesome time of year—colorful, pleasant weather and family celebrations. The first thing I do is plan a big Labor Day Picnic where all of our immediate and extended family can gather together for fellowship and food and connect with each other before the busyness of the season begins. It’s fun to decorate the house with all the different fall colors that come from bright leaves, gourds, Indian corn, fall flowers and wheat sprigs. Bobbie Bradshaw—Wichita Falls, Texas
A
utumn is my favorite season of the year. I love the changing of the colors on all the trees—the kaleidoscope of colors is positively amazing. I often wonder what God was thinking when He created each color, and I imagine Him sprinkling the golds and reds and yellows and browns and then just laughing with joy at His creation! I also love the colors of a fall sunset and the cool crispness of the winds as they blow. So how do I welcome the fall? With joy and thanksgiving for our God and His wonderful gift to us! Susan Anderson—Wichita Falls, Texas I like to welcome the autumn with hot tea and long runs. It’s great to sit down and warm up with hot tea on a chilly morning, and after months of hot weather, going for a run on a cool day is the best feeling in the world. Rhonda Houston—Arlington, Texas I restock our supply of hot cocoa mix and bake bread for the first time since early spring. The smell of baking bread makes the house all cozy, and the cocoa gives us permission to light a fire in the fireplace on the first cool night. Anna Derbyshire—Wichita Falls, Texas

Rub lemon juice on fish before cooking. This will help the fish maintain its color and add to its flavor. Watch shrimp closely for doneness when cooking. If they form a halfcircle, they are done, and if they have coiled into a circle, they are overdone.
A few drops of vinegar added to the water when boiling potatoes will help maintain their white color.
When boiling potatoes or rice, add a tablespoon of butter or margarine to avoid having the water boil over while they are cooking.

To make fluffier mashed potatoes, add a pinch of baking soda with the milk and butter before mashing. When making rice or instant potatoes, use chicken broth in place of the water to add extra flavor.
Cook extra poached eggs and then store the extras in cold water in the refrigerator to be heated later. Heat the poached eggs any time by cooking in the microwave for 10 to 15 seconds.
Before carving meat, allow it to stand for 10 to 15 minutes after removing from the heat source to allow the juices to be redistributed through the meat. The standing period will result in firmer, juicier meat and will make carving easier. Adding a thin coat of oil along the top edge of a pot will prevent food from boiling over.
To cook a couple of pieces of sweet corn in a hurry, place two or three ears in a resealable plastic bag and add 1 tablespoon of water for each ear. Leave a slight opening in the bag and cook on high in the microwave for 2 minutes. Check for doneness and if not done, cook for an additional 30 seconds.
Do not add salt to the water when cooking sweet corn because the salt will toughen the corn. Add a little sugar to the water to boost the flavor. If your soup becomes too salty when you are preparing it, try adding a teaspoon of sugar and a teaspoon of cider vinegar to combat the saltiness. Another method to try is to add a raw potato to the soup to absorb some of the extra salt.
Toss pasta with a dry grated cheese, such as parmesan, before adding the sauce. The grated cheese will stick to the pasta and allow the sauce to cling to the pasta better. Reduce the amount of grease splattering when frying foods, by sprinkling the bottom of the pan with salt.
Fresh herbs added to soup may lose their flavor when cooked for a long period of time. Add more herbs shortly before serving to boost the flavor.

I’ve recently heard a lot about the HPV vaccine, but I don’t really know much about it. As a Christian mom, I’m wondering if this is something my kids should get? What are your thoughts?
The Dr. Is In Michael W. Dotti, M.D. F.A.A.F.P. Mike, a board-certified family practitioner, is the founder and owner of the North Country Family Practice in Grapevine. He has been a Gateway member for over five years. Mike and his wife, Nancy, have two daughters, Carolyn and Janice.
The new vaccine against human papillomavirus (HPV) has recently been the subject of much controversy in the press and in the Christian community. Understanding the facts surrounding this new vaccine is foundational in making a wise decision regarding its use. Here are some of the facts. HPV is a sexually transmitted virus that causes cervical cancer and venereal warts. There are over 100 strains of human papillomavirus. While all of the strains do not cause cancer, all cervical cancer is caused by HPV. Now that doesn’t automatically mean that all women infected with HPV will also develop cervical cancer. When ordered by number of deaths, cervical cancer is the fifth most frequent cancer in women worldwide. In the United States alone, 12,800 women are annually diagnosed with cervical cancer and 4,800 die from the disease. Worldwide, 500,000 women are diagnosed with cervical cancer every year and 200,000 die from it. HPV can also cause penile cancer in men and is the cause of some oral cancer as well. Each year in the US, 5.5 million people catch HPV, and there are currently 20 million people infected. HPV infects 75% of

sexually active men and women in their lifetimes; that means that three out of four people who are having sex will get it or already have it. The HPV epidemic has been a silent killer for years, and the use of a condom does not prevent the transmission of it. Merck & Co., a US pharmaceutical company, has developed the Gardasil™ vaccine against four strains of HPV—two which cause cervical cancer and two which cause venereal warts. Gardasil is targeted at girls and women between the ages of nine and twenty-six, because the vaccine only works if given before infection occurs. Therefore, public health workers are targeting girls before they begin having sex. By doing so, it could prevent 70% of cervical cancers and 90% of genital warts. Studies have found Gardasil to be almost 100% effective in preventing diseases caused by the four HPV types covered by the vaccine. It’s important to remember that Gardasil serves as a preventative measure; it’s not a treatment for HPV. Gardasil is given as a three shot series with boosters at two and six months after the initial shot. The vaccine has been extensively tested and is safe. Gardasil doesn’t contain thimerosal (mercury). You can’t catch HPV from the vaccine as it is not a live virus vaccine, and there are no serious side effects. The most common side effect is some soreness at the injection site. Although the vaccine is expensive, it is being covered by most insurance companies. Gardasil is only the second vaccine ever developed that prevents cancer (the hepatitis B vaccine was the first). The controversy surrounding the vaccine recently came to a head in Texas when Governor Rick Perry became the first governmental official in the nation to attempt to mandate vaccination as an entrance requirement for girls entering sixth grade. Immediate opposition came from all sides including the Christian right. A recent Focus on the Family news release quoted one member of the Physicians Consortium who said, “We’re going to be sending a message to a lot of kids … that you just take this shot and you can be as sexually promiscuous as you want and it’s not going to be a problem, and that’s not true.” I would like to bring us back to the facts. Gardasil will not prevent 30% of cervical cancer caused by strains of HPV not covered in the vaccine. It does not prevent the multitude of other sexually transmitted diseases, nor does it prevent pregnancy. This vaccine is no substitute for abstinence before marriage and a God-ordained heterosexual relationship within the confines of marriage which is the ultimate safe sex. A more balanced perspective is that of the Christian Coalition of America which says, “Even though we believe that abstinence is the very best way to prevent any sexual disease before marriage and in the younger years of a girl’s life, we do support a vaccination that would prevent this horrible disease from taking the lives of our young girls, mothers and grandmothers.” ✚
The vaccine has been extensively tested and is safe.

MYTHS AND MISCONCEPTIONS OF EXERCISE Emily Gilstrap
MYTH #1 Sit-ups will shrink your stomach and leg lifts will slim your thunder thighs.
While infomercial producers and fitness gadget designers scramble to launch the next 28-minute show to sell their “too good to be true” products, America is getting more and more out of shape. Myths and misconceptions abound in gyms and fitness centers across America promising the “secret” training program or “magic bullet” tool that will bring the coveted results. We want them to be true, but in the end, they rarely deliver. It’s no wonder we don’t all just throw in the towel and give up. Jesus tells us in John 10:10 that Satan’s goal is to kill, steal and destroy. And Hosea 4:6 (NIV) says, “My people are destroyed from lack of knowledge.” As Christians, we must continually seek out truthful information pertaining to the health and care of our bodies. Proverbs 14:12–15 (NIV) says, “There is a way that seems right to man, but in the end it leads to death. … A simple man believes anything, but a prudent man gives thought to his steps.” We want to believe that the easy painless shortcuts work, but in actuality, if it sounds too good to be true then it is. Here are just a few of the common myths and misconceptions that still run rampant in the fitness world today.
Spot reduction is one of the longest standing myths in the fitness world. When it comes to body fat, it’s physiologically impossible to “spot” reduce just short of liposuction. When you lose body fat, it comes off the body in a predetermined genetic pattern similar to how you gain the fat except in a reverse order. When your body is in fat burning mode, fat comes from all over the place—your arms, calves, thighs, abdominals, face, forearms, big toe, etc. If spot reducing really worked, people who chew gum would have skinny faces. Spot toning, on the other hand, does work, and resistance exercises will strengthen the targeted muscles. Look at the dominant arms of professional tennis players, and you’ll see the difference in their muscle tone and size. The best method for reducing overall body fat is the age-old tried and true combination of cardiovascular training, resistance training and eating fewer calories than you’re burning off. Results come from doing these three things with persistence and consistency.
MYTH #2 Aerobic exercise must be done for a long time and continuously in order to have any benefits. Several daily short bouts of exercise such as ten minutes, three times a day are just as beneficial as one long thirty-minute session. Doing aerobic exercise like this can reduce common disease risk factors by lowering blood pressure, reducing body fat, lowering cholesterol levels and reducing stress. For improvement in aerobic fitness, the short format may actually prove to be the better option based on Dr. Kenneth Cooper’s years of research. Other research done at the University

MAXIMIZE YOUR WORKOUT WALKING uu
Get your heart rate up by pumping your arms forward and back rather than swinging them across your chest.
uu
Walk purposefully with long, energetic strides using the full range of your foot’s motion (heel to toe).
ELLIPTICAL TRAINING uu
Stand straight and take long, slow strides rather than quick short ones. This is done by having just enough resistance that you can still move slowly and controlled.
uu
Increase the amount of calories you burn by reversing the motion of the elliptical machine and moving backwards with your elbows at your sides pointing straight back.
RUNNING
of Pennsylvania School of Medicine suggests that short bouts of exercise may not only promote exercise adherence but also enhance weight loss. Mini-sessions can also produce similar changes in cardiorespiratory fitness when compared to long bouts of exercise. This is especially good news for obese individuals just beginning an exercise program.
MYTH #3 Free weights are better than exercise machines. This isn’t necessarily so. The effectiveness of each depends only on how well and how often you use them. Machines are not only excellent for muscle isolation but they are also safe for beginners just learning how to lift weights. Machines can also benefit those seeking therapeutic rehabilitation from an injury or disease. Free weights, on the other hand, require the use of multiple muscle groups and stabilizing muscles. They challenge one’s coordination, core strength and balance which all make for a more complex workout. The key is to not get stuck in a rut doing the same old program month after month. Mix it up with variety by adding free weights, machines and even body weight exercises such as Pilates or yoga.
uu
Take longer strides rather than quick short ones. This is easier on your joints and will also allow you to quicken your pace.
uu
Leave your arms at a 90-degree angle, and let them remain relaxed at your sides, swinging forward and back rather than across your body.
MYTH #4
uu
When using a treadmill (which is easier than running outdoors), upgrade your workout by setting the machine to a one percent incline.
This myth persistently hangs on and it’s really destructive. Pain is your body signaling you that something is wrong. If you feel real pain during a workout, you shouldn’t push past it; you should slow
STRENGTH TRAINING uu
Start with a lighter weight and do two sets of 15 reps using just enough weight to feel challenged but not so much that you can potentially injure yourself. Remember to keep your movements slow as you go through the entire range of motion by flexing the weight to the count of four and releasing to the count of four. This will really maximize your workout.
uu
Use weights that work your major muscle groups: legs, back, shoulders and arms.
STAIR CLIMBING uu
Keep your posture; don’t hunch over. To increase the amount of calories you burn, don’t hang or lean on the arm rests. Barely touch them, and use them only for balance.
uu
Take longer, slower steps and allow your feet to go through the complete motion. This will also help decrease the stress on your knees that quick, short steps can cause.

solutions for the soul down and even stop your workout. Too much exercise or incorrect exercise can occur at any level of fitness and is a serious problem. Over-exercising can lead to injury and other physical and psychological problems. In order to increase muscle and develop endurance, you do need to experience a certain level of fatigue and discomfort; however, that’s not pain. Some muscle soreness is to be expected when just beginning a workout regime or changing to a new program. This soreness afterwards indicates that your muscles have indeed been challenged and are going into repair mode to build them stronger. Learn to read your body and know the difference between true pain signaling danger and good old-fashioned muscle fatigue.
MYTH #5 Warming up before working out isn’t necessary if you’re in shape and careful. Wrong! Gradually warming up your muscles before you exercise is the number one defense against a variety of painful injuries by decreasing the probability of overstretching a muscle. Warming up is simply engaging in light rhythmic activity in order to elevate your heart rate and increase your core temperature. While it’s been commonly thought that “stretching” was the way to prepare for exercise, actually light aerobic activity or callisthenic type movements are ideal. Brisk walking, dynamic stretching or light sets of resistance training are all ways of warming up the body safely. Some of the many benefits include increased joint viscosity (lubrication), stimulated nervous system for more effective muscle contraction, increased muscle elasticity, improved circulation to the muscles and improved speed at which muscles contract and react. The length of time it takes to warm up and the intensity of the warm-up depends on the type of activity you’re about to engage in. Generally a five to ten-minute warm-up is sufficient for most individuals. ◆

here’s nothing more I want for my daughter than for her to embrace sexual purity and walk in the blessing of God’s plan. As a pre-teen and a teenager, I didn’t get those messages communicated to me in a healthy way, and I ended up making many of the wrong choices common to girls who are educated by the media. What do I tell her about my past? Will her knowing what I have done imply that it’s also OK for her? How much information is too much? ~Pleading for Purity
Dear Debbie
I
am often told that I have a strong personality. What do people mean when they say that? My reaction is to try and lay low but it feels like I’m being fake. I know that whenever God prompts me to make an adjustment in my life and I’m quick to obey, I will always see the fruit of it. Do you know of any models of strong women that are positive and godly? ~Ms. Personality
There’s nothing wrong with having a strong personality. God made you like that! He gave you qualities that are unique to you. That is what makes you, you. But sometimes your strength might really be your weakness, and it may be exposed like food stuck in your teeth. You may not know it, but everyone else can see it. The important thing to remember is that God has called all of us to live a spirit-formed life—yielded to Him. The strength of your personality doesn’t give you license to bowl people over. Living in the spirit requires you to not live in what seems natural to you but to live in what is supernatural. I’m sorry to say that the very strength of your personality will probably tend to expose your unyielded moments more often than that of a quiet person. Allow God to continue refining you. You have great value to the kingdom and will accomplish much if you live yielded to Him. A great way to allow God to work in your life is to give key people the ability to speak into your life when they see your “old person” emerging. Ask a close family member or a trusted friend to gently nudge you when your “strength” is showing. Find a mentor that has a strong personality like you and has experienced God’s refining. 16 Studio G
Your heart is in the right place. I think the best way to approach sex is from a godly, healthy position. When our children were about ten years old, we planned a time for each of them when we could talk to them about sex. Robert took the boys and I took our daughter on a special getaway alone with the “sex talk” as one of our goals. We wanted them to hear about the God-given gift of sex, but we didn’t want someone else corrupting their views of sex. In our home, we talk about sex as a healthy thing but stress the importance of waiting until marriage. We made covenants with the kids to wait for marriage. Robert gave each of them a ring of purity. As a part of that covenant, we made some promises to our children which include our blessings on their marriage and some other perks. But Robert also told them that even if they chose not to keep their end, he would keep his. We want to demonstrate as much as possible God’s character in our home, and He always keeps His end of the deal! Although we had those specific special times with our children, we also communicate with them about their temptation levels and we offer protections for them. I think an ongoing conversation is healthy about all sorts of areas of temptations such as drugs, drinking and sex. It doesn’t feel weird to our kids or us to talk about those certain items. You need to only share what feels right to you. For Robert and I, we’ve chosen not to tell our kids about all that he was involved in. But we have been open that he made mistakes and was an immoral person. They understand and our kids haven’t wanted to know the details. However, if they were to ask, he would answer diplomatically and truthfully without glorifying sin. He’s always quick to say that he deeply regrets his sin, and he’s willing to share about the pain of sin and the shame and guilt he has experienced. Your daughter can learn from your mistakes and walk in purity. So don’t be afraid of the topic, because you have wisdom and experience that she will appreciate.
I
have been a mother for such a long time, and now that the kids have moved out, I’m not sure where I belong. I know there are lots of moms in the same situation as me who feel like they lost their identity when they started living for their children. Please help me find my way back to being my husband’s bride again. ~Empty Nester You need to first realize that although your nest may be empty, you definitely are not. Raising children is a hard and long process, but I hope you can look back with a sense of pride at a job well-done. Along the way, you’ve gained a great deal of wisdom and maybe some insights into what not to do. You have a wealth of knowledge that a young mother would love to hear. You may want to consider becoming a mentor. If you don’t have a hobby, I strongly suggest you find one. Or else, find a place of service that inspires life in you. You could also start a workout program. Think about yourself some. A vibrant woman engaged in life is so attractive. In regards to becoming your husband’s bride again, find ways to romance him like you did when you were newlyweds. Here’s a start—surprise him by planning an event that he would really love like a golfing or fishing trip and include yourself in the plans by just being there with him. Be sure to praise him for how straight he hits the ball or for knowing where to fish, and watch his eyes twinkle because his lifelong cheerleader is standing beside him. Rekindling romance doesn’t have to be hard. Tell your husband now all the things you want him to know while he’s still alive. We’re never promised tomorrow, so don’t hold back today. This can be the best season of your life, so love both yourself and him. Blessings,

From Our Kitchen to Yours Apples of Gold Stacy Burnett “It’s so good. It will change your life,” she said. I didn’t think it was possible. How could a group for women within their first three years of marriage help me? I mean seriously, I’m 33 and I’d be in a small group with a bunch of younger women—kids, really! I may be a newlywed, but this class isn’t right for me. Besides that, I already know how to cook and be hospitable, and I’m sure that being a good wife can’t be that hard. Of course I was wrong … about all of it! All of my preconceived ideas were instantly thrown out the window within the first five minutes of the class. Through my Apples of Gold group, I learned how to really love my husband, be more hospitable, submit to my husband (not as easy as I thought!) and so much more. It was an honor and a privilege to learn from wonderful, mature ladies at Gateway. It was evident in the way they prepared the meals, planned the Bible lessons and created
beautiful table settings that they truly cared about each one of us and desired for us to become better wives, mothers and friends. And even though I never thought it was possible, my life was changed. In honor of my Apples of Gold mentors, I’d like to share these delightful recipes with you. ✂

Momma Made A Difference Laura Byrne Momma and I were alone in her darkened hospital room. A week earlier, she had a heart attack and came to the ER at Lourdes Hospital. With no discernible pulse and cancer in her kidneys, liver and lungs, she wasn’t expected to survive the night. I sat beside her, touching her arm, watching her eyelids flutter under the effects of medication. Although her eyes were closed, she was still conscious. “I wish I had done more for Jesus,” Momma said as she opened her pale green eyes looking straight ahead. Jesus Christ put His mark on Momma’s heart at the age of six while she was sitting alone on the porch of her parents’ farmhouse. Throughout the next 72 years of her life, she always referred to her Savior as “my Jesus” emphasizing how personal her relationship was with Him. But this night, near death in her hospital bed, my mother had regrets. “Momma, let me tell you what you did for Daddy. When you married him, he was lost. He was a good man, but he was lost. You went to church when you could, prayed for Daddy every day and lived your faith in a way that made Daddy want the same relationship you had with your living Redeemer. Because of your influence, he’s now been teaching the Bible at your church for decades and is the most Christ-like person we know.” “Let me tell you what you did for my brother John. You taught Sunday school with him on your lap and taught him the power 20 Studio G
of intercession. Today, John is an ordained minister who has mentored literally hundreds of young men and women who are now making their own mark for the Lord.” “Now let me tell you what you did for me. You taught Sunday school with me on your lap. In fact, my earliest memories are of you talking about Jesus. You taught me how to read before I went to kindergarten so that I could read the Bible on my own. You taught me that Sunday is for church, music is for praising the Lord and money is for giving back to God and sharing with other people.” “Momma, everything you did for Daddy, for my brother, for me, for anybody, that you did in the name of Jesus, you did for Jesus. And you know what else? Everything Daddy does, my brother John does or I do in the name of Jesus, you have a part in because you led us to Him—to our Savior.” Smiling weakly, Momma looked at me and said, “You think so?” Six days later, before the start of my mother’s funeral services, a woman introduced herself to our family as a former member of Momma’s Sunday school class for fourth grade girls. All those years before, Momma had taught her about Jesus and led her to the Savior. The woman told us that she, her husband and their children all profess and love Jesus Christ today because of Momma’s influence in her life! “Now and for eternity Momma, you made all the difference in the world.” ✢

re you tired of playing games, wearing masks or trying to be someone other than yourself? Wouldn’t you like the freedom to just be accepted for who you are, without the pressure to be someone you really don’t know how to be? Would you like to learn how to embrace your uniqueness and resist the pull to be like everyone else? God knew what He was doing when He made you. You are a unique individual—God created you the way you are! It’s time that we dare to accept ourselves as different and stop being insecure about who we are. If you’re going to overcome insecurities and be the person God’s called you to be, you must have the courage to be different. Unhappiness and frustration happen when we reject our uniqueness and try to be like each other. If you’re going to be successful at being completely you, then you’re going to have to take a chance on not being like everyone else. You must ask yourself, Am I a people pleaser or a God pleaser? Becoming a people pleaser is one of the easiest things we can do … but it can ultimately make us very unhappy. When we begin pleasing others, we begin to hear comments that make us feel good about ourselves. That’s okay as long as we don’t derive our sense of worth from it. People are too fickle for us to place our sense of worth in their opinions. We’re worth something because God says we’re worth
something—not because of what people think or say about us. People pleasers allow others to control their lives in order to gain acceptance and approval. But God doesn’t want us to be easily manipulated or controlled by others. We shouldn’t let other people’s opinions of us control our actions. At the same time, we must walk in love. We can’t just do anything we want, whenever we want, with total disregard for the feelings of others. We can’t say, “I’m going to do this, and if you don’t like it, that’s tough—that’s your problem!” The Bible commands us to love others, and love doesn’t behave that way. However, we must not allow people to manipulate and control us to the point that we’re never free to be who we are. If we do, we’ll always try to become the person we think others expect us to be. The world (those we know and deal with on a daily basis who may be family, friends and people in the neighborhood or even in the church) is continually trying to conform us to its image. The word conform
means “to be similar in form or character; to behave in accordance with prevailing modes or customs.” Romans 12:2 (AMP) says, “Do not be conformed to this world (this age), … but be transformed (changed) by the [entire] renewal of your mind ….” It’s then that we find the good and acceptable will of God for our lives. People will always try to fit us into their mold, partly due to their own insecurity. It makes them feel better about what they are doing if they can get someone else to do it too. Very few people have the ability to be who they are and let everybody else be who they are. Can you imagine how nice the world would be if we would all do that? Each person would be secure in who he is and let others be who they are. We would not have to try to be imitations of each other. God wants to take us, with all our weaknesses and inabilities, and transform us, by working from the inside out, to do something powerful in this earth. If we’re going to overcome insecurities and succeed at being ourselves, we can’t continue to be afraid of what everybody else may think. We can’t continue to allow others to fit us into their mold. We are different! We are unique! God created us this way to accomplish His purposes here on earth. ♥ Copyright © 1998–2004. All rights reserved. he dynamics of love, respect, protection and honor are more than just keys to a successful marriage and intimate relationship. They are timeless principles with the ability to restore something crucial lost by both males and females—the power of dominion. Notice I did not say domination. Domination is the perversion of God’s gift of strength and authority. The heavens are the Lord’s heavens, but the earth has He given to the children of men. Psalm 115:16 (AMP)
Dominion is first defined as ruling power, authority, or control. It describes an area of influence. It is further defined as land governed by a ruler and power over a territory. So what have we done with our dominion? All authority, whether entrusted to a man or woman, is given to serve others for their benefit and growth. The ultimate pattern for dominion was established in Genesis when God placed the man and the woman over the earth and charged them to subdue, multiply and replenish it. Their dominion was for the well-being of the earth and its creatures. And God blessed them and told them, “Multiply and fill the earth and subdue it; you are masters of the fish and birds and all the animals. And look! I have given you the seed-bearing plants throughout the earth, and all the fruit trees for your food .…” Then God looked over all that He had made, and it was excellent in every way. Genesis 1:28–31 (TLB) I love this version of the blessing. You can hear God’s excitement as He empowers them. God blessed them together and called it excellent in every way. Together there was no lack or weakness. Each and every aspect was perfect. Notice there was only one thing they did not have dominion over … each other. This first couple had it all. They possessed everything necessary to initiate order so the earth could flourish. Adam began the process when he assigned names and established designation, position, and placement in creation. With everything named, paired and in its place, it was time for Eve, who came on the scene and brought her gift of relationship. She enhanced Adam’s life with connection. Examples of this are friendship, sexual intimacy and children. Without Eve, Adam had seed but no garden in which to plant it. Without the woman, the man had abundant food but no one to savor it with, vision but no one to share his dream and give it life. Without Eve, Adam was limited. She expanded his life on every front. From the very beginning, men were about position and placement and women were about relationship and
Fall 2007 23
atmosphere. Oh, but the Fall messed up so many areas. Our God-given dominion morphed into domination, the beauty of order changed to chaotic disorder and our power to multiply fragmented into division. We began to use our domains and dominion against each other. Men dominated with their physical strength and position, and women manipulated the man’s heart as the battle of the sexes began. But think of it! If, in fact, redemption was powerful enough to restore us to our heavenly Father, then certainly it is compelling enough to restore the man to the woman, the woman to the man, children to parents, parents to children and Christian to Christian. What might this look like? Healthy authority is for provision, protection and direction and is rarely held entirely by one individual. If abused, it ultimately works against its own purpose. Man is not the boss with the woman doing it for him. He is the leader who does life with her. Actually, if he is wise, he will tell her repeatedly that he can’t do it without her. I love it when my husband tells me he needs me. I feel uniquely empowered to meet whatever need he lacks. And if I don’t know how to be the woman he calls me, I do all I can to find out how to emulate her. I flourish when he calls me wise and necessary. Likewise, John loves it when I call him strong, decisive and a sexy hunk of man. Men and women need to begin to speak the language of allies, not the verbiage of enemies. Conversely, if a man misuses his authority, you will see it reflected in his wife and children. If a woman misuses her influence, you see it in her husband. You see embittered couples and families in conflict. But be encouraged; God wants to restore dominion, which is the power of two with one heart. The well-being of the earth is intimately tied to both love and the healthy dominion of the man and the woman. When authority and love run amuck, the world suffers. When our God-given authority is used against allies rather than against the enemy, all of nature is caught in the conflict and agony of it. To our shame, the divorce rate in the church is reportably no better than it is outside it. Domination spawns divorce, division and loss. Dominion yields legacy. The battle between the serpent and the woman is not yet over, because the complete victory has not yet been realized. Where is the love? Where is the restoration of relationships? Where is the fullness of the victory purchased by Jesus Christ, who was Eve’s seed? When will we be known for our love one for another? Did Jesus come to merely give us life after death? No, He came to restore what had been lost in every relationship. “My purpose is to give life in all its fullness.” John 10:10 (NLT; emphasis added) “For the Son of Man came to seek and to save what was lost.” Luke 19:10 (NIV; emphasis added) This does not sound like survival until heaven; it sounds like abundance and recovery in the now. Relationships are to be 24 Studio G
full of life and the restoration of that which was lost. Too often we are so religious we only hear Luke 19:10 used to describe an evangelistic outreach when it carries a charge for so much more. I recently heard a leader challenge business people to explore this and stop feeling ashamed if God has gifted them with the ability to prosper. As I listened, my heart leapt … men and women can live as one again! There is the potential for restoration in every relationship that has suffered loss. Paul used the example of marriage to illustrate Christ and His church. This means we can experience this healing in our marriages now! Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave Himself up for her. … In this same way, husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. Ephesians 5:25, 28 (NIV) Bottom line: wives are for love. How does Christ love the church? He gave up His life for us and loves us as His own. The man who loves his wife loves himself. Does this mean the man who hates his wife hates himself? I know the man who dominates his wife robs himself of all that is hers to give. By being controlling, he shuts down her fountain of life and loses her insight and tenderness. Sometimes, the woman is left with only one hope—God will hear that she is unloved. The Book of Ephesians elevates the relationship of man and woman by comparing it with Christ and the church. “For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh.” This is a profound mystery—but I am talking about Christ and the church. However, each one of you also must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband. Ephesians 5:31–33 (NIV; emphasis added) Who is Paul quoting when he begins for this reason? He is quoting Genesis. He is reestablishing the original intent and parameters of relationship. There is more clarity given to the man’s role than even to the woman’s. Husbands must love and women must respect. This definitely works because women love to be loved and men love to be respected! Redemption has the power to restore all that was lost in the transgression of the Fall. Not only did the Fall separate us from the presence of God, but also we found ourselves troubled in the company of each other. Restoration begins as we submit to the truth of God’s Word and consciously choose to do it His way. Can we dare to believe husbands can again love their wives and wives will again respect their husbands? Can love and respect long gone be recovered? Yes, it can, but not without the healing restoration of God. I have a passion to see every marriage blessed and restored to a union of passion and a legacy of dominion. Couples should truly join their lives and discover they are stronger together than either was individually. We must rediscover the power of dominion, two with one heart.

etting up in the morning has really started to become a chore for me. I sit at work all day thinking of all the things I need to do when I get home. Once I get home, I start thinking about all the things I need to do at work. Then when I put it all off to go hang out with friends, I think of all the things I should be doing and can’t completely enjoy my free time. I try handling so many problems and issues that I’m constantly in a state of fatigue and exhaustion. Adding to my frustration, I usually have to deal with an all-day headache. Several months ago, one of my mentors gave me a beautiful page full of encouraging scriptures. She put my name at the top and framed it for me, and I’ve had it displayed on my desk ever since. Earlier this week, I reached a place of utter exhaustion. So I pushed my work aside, took a deep breath and slowly began to read through each scripture one by one. Almost instantly, I began to feel calmer. My tense neck relaxed, and I realized I needed to spend some quiet time alone with God. I immediately went into my employer’s office and asked for the next two days off. I knew it was a long shot with such short

notice, but my vacation was approved. So on Wednesday morning, I set off to a new place to be alone and refreshed. I packed lightly, bringing only my swimsuit, toothbrush, Bible, journal and a book I’ve been trying desperately to get through for a while. The destination I chose was several hours from home. As soon as I had left my familiar setting behind, I began enjoying the newness and beauty around me. I made frequent stops by the side of the road to admire small ponds, farm animals, the sunset and a small cavern. When I finally arrived at the lake house where I would be staying, I soaked in my surroundings, ate dinner and went to bed early for the first time in months. I slept all through the night and woke up feeling greatly refreshed. The next day, I walked out to the farthest dock, climbed to its second floor and laid my towel out on the very far corner. As I stood leaning over the railing, I looked out into the distance to see the other side of the lake. When I turned to look at the shore behind me, all I saw were miles of hills with newly sprouted spring trees. I thought about calling my friends back home to tell them about all the beautiful things I was enjoying, but because I was in such a remote location, my cell phone had no service. So instead, I just thanked God for the amazing beauty of His creation. I began to read my Bible and stumbled across Psalm 46—“Be still and know that I am God.” I closed my eyes and reflected on what I had just read—“Be still.” That’s what I want. I long to just “be.” I yearn for stillness in my hectic life. I’ve been desperate for peace and quiet. I need for everything to stop, so I can be. Be still. Know. Know that God is just as desperate for stillness with me as I am with Him. Know that He is the God who created the beauty I was enjoying on my remote vacation. Know that even when I get back home, He is still God. I can still commune with Him. He is still there to walk me through the more difficult decisions I have to make. He is there helping me to embrace beautiful moments. In realizing this, I began to see that I should also “be anxious for nothing.” If I’m at work, I need to embrace the opportunity to work that day. If I’m taking care of my house chores, I need to embrace the joy of having a home. If I’m out with friends, I should embrace my time with them. There are situations in each of our lives that demand attention and time, but we shouldn’t allow those things to take time away from us enjoying other things. There’s no reason why a difficult situation should rob me of the peace I enjoy as a child of God. While I was away for those two days, I spent time basking in the sunlight and in the peace of knowing He is God. I watched the waves gently brush along the shore. I listened to the birds sing in the distance. I finally finished reading the book I’ve been trying to get through for months, and I embraced the time I had with just God and me. I now feel refreshed, rejuvenated and ready to take on the challenges that await me. My trip has taught me just how extremely important it is for me to just rest, be still and know. ✿
WINNING FRIENDSHIPS Megan & Joyce Simmons

ho you choose to be your closest friends is one of the most important decisions you will make in the course of your life. You are the same today that you are going to be in five years except for two things: the people with whom you associate and the books you read. The Bible says that if you associate with wise friends you will become wise, but a companion of fools will be destroyed (Proverbs 13:20). You will become like those you associate with! Why do we need friendships? Friendships include the desire to be known and know others, to give and be given to, to encourage and be encouraged, to have an example or be an example and to have someone or be someone to admire and follow. The ironic part is the very things that make us need these relationships are the same things that can keep us from making friends. We want to be known, but fear the transparency of having someone know us. We want to give, but we fear our giving might be rejected. We want models, but run the risk of them failing us. We want to encourage, but fear possible rejection. Maybe we are better off not taking the risks involved with having, making and keeping friends!
Let’s look at a few misconceptions about friendships: ll I HAVE FAMILY AND MY RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD. THAT’S ALL I NEED. God did not create us to live in isolation. Balanced friendships with other women can strengthen and bring more vitality back into your family rather than deter from it! ll I DON’T WANT TO BE A PART OF THE CLIQUE. The clique is a clique because only certain individuals are a part of it. Chances are the majority of women feel the same way you do and don’t want or need the approval of a clique. They see past and beyond the peck order and on to real friendship. ll I HAVE BEEN HURT BY FRIENDS AND I AM NOT GOING TO LET THAT HAPPEN AGAIN. Any kind of relationship has risks. Well-intentioned friends can hurt each other, break a trust or destroy a confidence. As easily as it may happen to you, you may do it to someone else. Hurt, losses from death and relocation are all hard things to bear, but friendships are worth it. On your journey you will find several people who are worth cultivating friendships and it is these you most remember.
Fall 2007 27
ll I FIND WOMEN MY AGE AND BACKGROUND BORING AND NEGATIVE. Seek friendships with women who are where you want to be. Be a leader not a follower. God may have surprise treasures hidden in the friendships of those you least expect. To find treasure you have to dig for it! ll I HAVE NOTHING TO OFFER SOMEONE. Philippians 2:4 says, “Each of you should not look to your own interests, but also to the interests of others.” You have gone through situations that could benefit others. Offer the little you think you have and God will multiply it. Friends in your life are like pillars on your porch: Sometimes they hold you up, sometimes they lean on you; sometimes it’s just enough to know they are standing by. Look at some different types of friends and see what category your friends fall into. ll BRAINERS stimulate your intellectual growth. If your friends have more knowledge of the latest soap operas than the book of Ephesians watch out. ll TRAINERS mentor, teach and train. A mentor encourages, strengthens, enlightens, corrects in love and offers help, time and energy to get you to your goal. ll DRAINERS are friends that sometimes ask too much. When a friend drains you of your emotional, physical and spiritual energy for too long a period, watch out. ll SHAMERS make you feel ashamed because of their knowledge of some sin in your past. You continually seek their approval and determine to keep the relationship alive until you receive it—which, by the way, never happens. ll FRAMERS continually put forth an effort to build strength and character into your life. They are the friends who stick closer than a brother. Ben Johnson wrote, “True happiness consists not in the multitude of friends, but in the worth and choice.” Framers are friends who are loyal—not as depicted in this story: Linda: “What’s that you’re reading?” Jill: “A journal.” Linda: What’s in it? Jill: “I can’t tell you that. A journal is a highly personal and confidential affair. It has important secret dreams and secret yearnings. It’s private. It’s not meant to be shared lightly with other people. And besides, this journal belongs to Jennifer.” ll DISTAINERS are often the most illogical people that have crossed your path. What a wonderland of friendships awaits us if we just take the time to care and share. 28 Studio G

aiting in the longest grocery store checkout line I had ever encountered, I began scanning magazine covers. I saw the latest celebrities and models with their thin, tan, stylishly-clothed bodies, their flawless hair and make-up. One article offered the latest tips on curbing cravings—information that might help me shave off a few unwanted pounds, those annoying areas I forget when consuming handfuls of my favorite chocolates! Soon, though, I realized I was playing a deadly game. It’s a game many of us women have played—the game of comparing ourselves to magazine images. We desire the same figure and look, while overlooking the fact that each perfect cover was created by a team of experts: photographers with lighting, make-up artists, clothing stylists and—the ultimate secret weapon—airbrushing! Unfortunately, few of us have the luxury of having professionals focused on making us look glamorous every minute of the day!
CULTURE’S DEFINITION OF BEAUTY Our culture defines beauty by properties that are attractive to the eye. In many ways, our society is obsessed with external appearance. Americans spend numerous dollars, time and attention toward achieving the world’s “ideal” beauty standard. Remember the reality TV show The Swan? The 16 female contestants were willing to endure up to 20 procedures to be physically transformed into artificial beauties. More than 10.2 million cosmetic plastic surgery procedures were performed in the United States in 2005, up 11 percent from 2004, according to statistics released by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS). “For many,

WHAT IS TRUE BEAUTY? The Bible says that God is more interested in the heart, or character, of a person than the outward appearance (1 Samuel 16:7). This complete definition of beauty includes internal qualities that please the ear, intellect and moral sense. Often the external does not reflect who you are on the inside. Have you ever noticed an attractive woman whose beauty instantly faded when she opened her mouth? Maybe she had a rude or offensive attitude. Or maybe the words she spoke were critical, negative, judgmental or profane. No matter how beautiful she looked on the outside, her behavior was unattractive! In a store recently, I saw a woman who had the perfect package: sleek hair, fresh makeup, designer clothing, a trendy handbag and exquisite shoes. The woman wanted to return an item. When the clerk informed her that the
“…The Lord does not look at the things human beings look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.” 1 Samuel 16:7 (TNIV)
return policy did not allow a refund, she became loudly irate. I felt embarrassed for this woman and could not believe she had treated the clerk so poorly for adhering to store policy. Her beauty was instantly marred. Then God gently reminded me that if I looked into the mirror of my heart at certain times, I would not like what I would see. I can be like the woman I observed at the store: well-groomed on the outside, ugly on the inside. We all have bad beauty days physically; however, each day we can choose to yield to God, allowing Him to develop true beauty inside our hearts!
GROWING IN TRUE BEAUTY A few weeks ago, I took an hour-long phone survey to help a company evaluate a new sandwich. In return, I was given a certificate for a free lunch. When I presented the certificate, the manager would not accept my voucher because the corporate headquarters had not been refunding his franchise for this offer. I kindly explained what I had been promised. When he still would not honor the company’s word, I decided to purchase a sandwich. The man behind me, who had watched the exchange, insisted on buying my lunch and said, “I am impressed with your reaction and can tell you are representing something higher than yourself.” What a tremendous compliment! The beauty of my character radiated in this stranger’s eyes as he saw the love of Christ shine through me. I was thankful for God’s patience and grace in this perpetual process of growing beauty within. As I am continuously challenged, I encourage you also to allow God to consistently grow your inner beauty, the kind God esteems. Even though physical beauty naturally fades, we can choose whether our character blossoms or shrivels. • ABOUT APRIL BARR Modeling and acting internationally and throughout the United States, April Barr has appeared in magazines like Glamour, Vogue, Seventeen and Modern Bride. cosmetic plastic surgery is the new take on ‘growing old gracefully,’ ” said ASPS President Bruce Cunningham. How far are you willing to go to attain outward beauty? I asked myself this question as I recently pondered having microdermabrasion for an area of problematic skin. What happens when our bodies show signs of damage or disease because of the choices we make? What do we do when aging causes fine lines and other natural signs of life’s progression? We’ve all noticed celebrities who have been so lifted, pulled and tightened that they don’t even look like themselves anymore. The disheartening realization is that our world’s beauty standard is based on opinions that ebb and flow like the changing tides in the ocean. However, the good news is that God’s beauty standards are unchanging and internal.

Dull, tired, stressed, lifeless skin is a common concern for women of all ages. Many factors contribute to these issues. Here are a few of the culprits along with some simple solutions to rejuvenate your skin and keep it glowing. EXCESS CAFFEINE OR SODAS * Limit caffeinated drinks to no more than two per day. LACK OF HYDRATION * Increase water intake. More is better!Try adding lime, lemon, oranges or cucumber for some flavor. Also, spritzing your skin throughout the day with an alcohol-free toner will give your skin a quench of thirst and instant glow. STRESS * Find an outlet for your stress. Exercise is best for stress relief and also purifies your skin by increasing circulation and oxygen flow. Embrace the rosy glow!
roots handbag To develop this handbag, the designer uses two basic and essential materials: ideas and leather. The fusion of these elements not only gives birth to the bag but also to different accessories such as belts, wallets and sashes. Argentine design with Argentine leather. Available in black, red and espresso at ziva31.com.
POLLUTION * Have a result-oriented skincare regime that is free of alcohol, dyes, fragrances and mineral oil. Consistency is the key. Be committed to taking the extra time in the morning and in the evening for “your time.” Cleansing your skin with a non-stripping cleanser is essential. Cleansing removes all traces of pollution, dirt and oil that have built up on the skin. Use a night cream, because water evaporates while you’re sleeping causing dehydration and dullness. Exfoliate two to three times a week with a non-irritating facial scrub or enzyme. Exfoliation removes the buildup of dead skin cells, which makes your skin look tired and lifeless.
* Take an essential fatty acid supplement daily. Flaxseed oil, alpha lipoic acid, coenzyme Q10 and vitamins A, C and E support healthy radiant skin.

’ve recently made an earth-shattering discovery about myself that I hope will bring comfort to everyone I know. Should there ever be a series of catastrophic events to strike our planet, I will be here for you. I’m talking about the kind of event that would be perfect for a “Will Smith Saves the World” type of movie where hurricanes wipe out every port in the world, tornadoes destroy all vegetation, mad cow disease is diagnosed in every cow, meteors pollute all water sources with a high contamination of mercury, pestilence kills every bird of the air and within minutes, our entire food supply is wiped out and we’re all left to starve. If anything like this were to occur, the comfort that I offer you is that I will be the last one standing and grieving over you. Do you know why I’m so convinced that I’ll be the last one to die? I’m positive that I can survive just about anything for an extreme amount of time because I officially have the most resistant fat cells known to mankind. I’ve heard that if you simply increase the amount you exercise and decrease your fat and calorie intake you will lose weight. Well, I’m living proof that isn’t always the case. I’ve logged hours walking, biking, lifting weights and jogging. And as far as food goes, I’ve come to the point where I consider oatmeal with Splenda and fat free milk to be a wonderful breakfast and a piece of chicken the size of a deck of cards is a feast to me. I don’t generally enjoy a bland diet of rabbit food and chicken, but in hope of losing weight, I was willing to give it a try. The results? Well, let’s just say that a three-pound bathroom scale’s velocity is enough to shatter a window upon impact and travel twelve feet into the neighbor’s yard! And then when I went to go weigh myself again, it was almost as if that scale hadn’t learned anything from its trip out the window. There was almost no change at all. I couldn’t believe that my scale had the audacity to continue
I
lying about my true weight! Results like that are truly disgusting and extremely frustrating. Don’t even try to console me with all that jargon about how muscle weighs more than fat, so you could be losing fat but gaining muscle. It brings me no comfort. It’s like saying a size 4 designer dress is the same as a size 8 from Target. So there’s my scientific research and proof. No matter what happens, I cannot starve to death. In the face of a worldwide catastrophe, I will be invincible. While you’re pining away, I will be a survivor. The hope that I can personally offer you is that when all your friends have gone before you, at least I’ll still be around to grieve over you. Now isn’t that a comforting thought? I recently purchased a little black dress, although I had previously promised myself that I wouldn’t buy anything new until I lost some weight. And while it wasn’t the dress I really wanted, I bought it anyway because I needed it for something “special.” In fact, to make the little black dress work, I actually had to buy Spanx®. Now, even if I lose a little weight because there’s no food for anyone, I’ll be able to wear it to your funeral. So not only will I be there for you in the end, but I’ll also be appropriately dressed so that I can grieve for you properly. You might be thinking that you would like to give me a run for my money in the wake of a food shortage because you believe that your fat cells are more resistant than mine. I propose that we team up to work together as fat retainers, and eventually we’ll become the new skinny. We can even form a fat-retaining survivor grieving team and grieve for all the skinny people who’ve passed away so quickly and then have a wake with imaginary food while we reminisce about all the food we used to enjoy. In between all the grieving, we’re going to have to make some time to resize all the clothes in the world of course. And all I know is that regardless of anything else, I’m going to be the new size 0! n

TEN TIPS
HOW TO
DRESS YOUR
1
MAN Kaycee Murphy
It’s been said that “clothes make the man,” and recently, I’ve been approached by several of my single male friends for advice about shopping. Since this is such a fun topic, I thought it just might be worthwhile for the readers of Studio G. So ladies, I think it’s time for a makeover, and I don’t mean that new outfit you’ve had your eyes on. The men have finally caught up to us or at least they’re ready to take a dip in the pool … so let the shopping begin!
DETERMINE HIS STYLE TYPE
Determine what style you’ll be working with and ask lots of questions. Whether he wants to be a rock star or sport the traditional look of a businessman, you have to have a blueprint to work with; so find out what the goal is. Keep in mind that this will vary with where a man is in the different seasons of life. In all likelihood, the style that currently works for him won’t be the same five years from now.
CLOSET INVENTORY
2
Tackle his closet with the same passion you pour into your holiday meal planning. To move forward in the right direction, you’ll need to take everything out of his closet and take inventory. Maybe the leather sandals “with the little buckles across the top” should finally go to the resale shop down the street and the oversized polos in various shades of blue can be diversified in this new adventure! Think: out with the old, in with the new.
BODY TYPE
3
This next point is extremely important, ladies, so write it down: Observe your man with an objective eye because you need to know his body type before you start your shopping. Is he tall or on the shorter side? Is he tipping the scales or does he need some more of your good home cooking? Taking note of the proportions of his frame will help you determine whether the shirt goes out or in, T-shirt or button-up, long shorts or “don’t even think about wearing shorts.” You get the idea. But always remember that you’re his biggest cheerleader and source of encouragement, so don’t use this opportunity to point out his faults. Dressing your man is all about playing up his best features; therefore, feel free to point out each and every one!

TEN TIPS
ESTABLISH A BUDGET
4
Now that you know “what” you have to work with, you’ll need to establish a budget for your modern man makeover. Establishing a budget upfront will save you from having to spend countless hours explaining why designer jeans are so critical to his new wardrobe and will keep the peace in your relationship at the same time!
THE RIGHT JEANS
Speaking of designer jeans … Ladies, if you want to get the spark back into your relationship, get out of the boat and encourage your man to invest in a great pair of jeans. Let me just say that there is a HUGE difference in the Old Navy traditional standbys or a nice pair of Seven jeans when you go out for dinner and a movie with your man! You don’t have to spend a fortune if you know how to hit the right places. And if you really want to save, you can hit a warehouse sale with savings up to 80%. My flavor of the moment is TheWarehouseSale.com, but make sure you first spend a day at Nordstrom to do a little prep work learning what jeans work best for your man. I guarantee it will save you a headache come shopping day.
5
PROPER FIT
6
Now that you’re on the right track in the denim department, let’s talk about fit. When you’re buying your man a nice dress shirt, slacks for work or any article of clothing, you want to make sure you get the right fit for his body type. Ensure that his slacks and jeans are the right length by having him try them on with the shoes he’ll be wearing and have his shirts tapered if they’re not already designed that way. Men need a little shaping here and there just like we do! I can’t say enough about fit, so check him out from every angle and don’t be shy. He needs your honesty just as much as you need his.
SHIRTS
After talking about fit, I have to mention shirts because a great dress shirt can take an ordinary look into an entirely different direction. There are some great tees out there for the man who wants an edgy look. Just make sure you consider the design of the tee for the age, body type and style of your man. When you’re talking about a traditional button-up, please feel free to branch out a little with color and style. Remember that a good tailor can transform an ordinary shirt into a showpiece without having to spend a fortune. For your basic pieces, it might be worth spending a little more money in the long run. Just like buying furniture for your house, you get what you pay for.

SHOES
8
Anybody will tell you that the shoes are the final accessory that will make or break an outfit, and it’s no different with your man. If you’re going to really help him out, you have to get him to invest in just a few essentials. Every man needs a great pair of black dress shoes that can double up with slacks for work or with jeans for when he’s out with his lady for dinner. Ladies, the same angular toe that’s popular for us is good for men, too. So please encourage him to let the large round-toed clogs in his closet disappear (even if it means storing them until they come back into fashion). A few other essentials might be some great boots for his designer jeans, and a couple of other pairs of shoes that can be used for both work and recreation.
TIMEPIECE
We’re getting down to the final tip and the clock is ticking, which brings us to the timepiece. You need to make sure his timepiece is as stylish as his wardrobe. It doesn’t have to be a Rolex or a Movado; just work with your budget and find something that’s perfect for your man and doesn’t break the bank. Fossil makes some great watches as does Kenneth Cole, and I’ve even been able to snag a great watch at a bargain price at Target. Just keep in mind that the style of the watch should match the outfit, because there’s nothing worse than a great outfit and boring timepiece or the opposite—a casual outfit with an outrageous timepiece. Let’s just say the same consideration you take to determine the colors you want to highlight your hair at the salon should be used in selecting your man’s timepiece.
9
PRAISE! PRAISE! PRAISE!
Finally, the most important part of dressing your man has nothing to do with spending money or stretching his wardrobe. It’s been said that “clothes make the man,” and many of the tips I’ve shared would seem to support that notion; however, the most important thing you can do for your man is to choose your words wisely and season them with grace. Make a choice to choose words that edify and encourage. You’ll see him grow into a mighty man of God right before your eyes. In the end, you’ll find that a godly man is worth far more than any pair of designer jeans! ✪

y two daughters, Alana (5) and Jenna (2) were playing in Jenna’s room, and the baby monitor happened to be on. I was working in the kitchen alone and clearly heard every word. I promise you there’s no embellishment here—this is exactly how it went down. Alana picked up a storybook and read the pictures to Jenna. With great enthusiasm, she beautifully told the story of baby Moses, even commenting on how his own mother got to take care of him and how he grew up to be a prince. Then, with just as much joy in her voice, she continued saying, “And Jenna, this story is true! It really happened a long time ago,” she said. “Now, not before mommy was born. Maybe it happened when she was a little girl or something, and then when she grew up, somebody decided to write it down. And before you were born, they added it to the Bible so we could read it to you! Isn’t that cool, Jenna?” Then she proceeded to tell the whole thing all over again, even the parts about how old mommy was and how they added the story of Moses to the Bible. She told it exactly that same way again, but I still hadn’t stopped laughing from the first time through! Contributed by Kisha Thomson

Recommended Reading S. George Thomas I AM NOT BUT I KNOW I AM: WELCOME TO THE STORY OF GOD Louie Giglio When I first bought the book, i am not but i know I AM, it sat on my shelf for several months. For some reason that I couldn’t quite figure out, I was hesitant to read it. Maybe it was because the title was long and slightly confusing, or maybe it was because of my bad habit of judging books by their covers. I’m really not sure. Finally, one day, with nothing else to do or read, I forced myself to pick up i am not but i know I AM solely because a friend (whose opinion and tastes I highly respected) strongly recommended it. With great reluctance, I began to read. And surprise of surprises, I was hooked! From the author’s first story in the opening chapter to the last appendix in the back of the book, I couldn’t stop turning the pages. Louie Giglio (the founder of the Passion movement) is an excellent communicator, and this book is no exception. He clearly makes his point and skillfully conveys deep biblical insights without weighing the reader down with too much heavy theology. Louie does an excellent job of going through examples of how we try to make our story the center of the universe, turning God into a supporting actor instead of the star. His conversational writing style, candid honesty and numerous personal stories gently guide readers into a place of humble reverence before God. In the midst of a society that encourages us to make a name for ourselves, this book presents a refreshing contrast and provides a much-needed dose of biblical perspective by helping us realize that we’re not the center of the universe. As you ponder the greatness and glory of God, you’ll learn how to experience the rewards and meaning that comes from living a life that is “small.”

HOLY DISCONTENT: FUELING THE FIRE THAT IGNITES PERSONAL VISION Bill Hybels Frustration. Angst. Discontent. All words describing feelings that we’ve been told are negative. But all throughout history, God has used those emotions to speak to peoples’ hearts and affect eternal change—Moses; David; William Wilberforce; Martin Luther King, Jr.; Mother Teresa; Bono. In his most recent book, Bill Hybels explores the concept of how vital it is for you to convert the frustration of your holy discontent into fuel for changing the world and yourself. All throughout the book, he asks the penetrating question: What is it that makes you want stand up and echo the immortal words of Popeye, “That’s all I can stands, and I can’t stands no more!” Whether it’s social injustice, AIDS, bad preaching or wrecked marriages, whatever breaks the heart of someone who loves God most likely breaks His heart, too. Hybels points out that it’s through these firestorms of frustration that God wants to enlist you in setting the things right that are wrong in this world. At just under 150 pages and peppered with personal, biblical and historical stories all throughout, Holy Discontent is an extremely quick and easy read—I got through it in a single sitting. His powerful conclusion moved me to tears and stirred in me a deep longing to begin living from the energy of holy discontent. And ever since I finished reading it, the contents of this book have been constantly resonating at the back of my mind and caused me to rethink several aspects of my life. If you have a burning desire to discover and fulfill what God has specifically created for you to do, I highly recommend it.

Must-Have Music RECOLLECTION: THE BEST OF NICHOLE NORDEMAN Nichole Nordeman Since her debut album, Wide Eyed, was released in 1998, Nichole Nordeman has proven herself to be one of Christian music’s finest artists. Nordeman’s honest, intelligent and poetic songwriting in conjunction with her beautiful piano playing and distinctive voice set her in a league of her own. So far, she has won nine Dove Awards and sold nearly one million records. This year alone, Nichole’s songs have been spun over 61,000 times at Christian radio stations making her the most-played female artist in Christian radio. Recollection: The Best of Nichole Nordeman was released to celebrate this singer’s career thus far, and it is definitely an excellent sampling of her music. What makes this “best of ” collection unique is that instead of going the typical route and filling the album with just her hit radio singles, Nichole handpicked these songs herself because they were personal milestones in her life. That’s not to say there aren’t any radio hits on this CD, because there are. The Recollection journey even kicks off with the 2002 breakthrough single “Holy” which helped Nichole earn numerous Dove Awards for her third album, Woven & Spun. From beginning to end, the 17 tracks on Recollection do an incredible job of showcasing Nordeman’s finest work from her early recordings to her most recent original album Brave. Overall, every one of Nichole’s albums is well represented. As an added bonus, the CD contains two brand-new songs as well. “Sunrise” celebrates that fact that God is there with us regardless of the trial we’re experiencing, and “Finally Free” is about God’s power to free us. This is a great collection that will satisfy both long-time fans and those who are checking out Nichole Nordeman’s amazing music for the first time. 38 Studio G

THANKSGIVING CELEBRATION Here are some suggested games, puzzles and ideas that will not only help you serve your guests a wonderful Thanksgiving meal, but will also help you provide a fulfilling relational experience around your table. Enjoy!
Before Dinner Before sitting down, have each person stand behind their chairs and read 1 Corinthians 11:24–25 aloud: And when He had given thanks, He broke it and said, “Take, eat; this is My body which is broken for you; do this in remembrance of Me.” In the same manner He also took the cup after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.” Just as Jesus gave thanks over His food and the elements of His life, on this day, we should do the same. You don’t need to take communion unless you wish to do so. From my experience, simply reading this portion of Scripture is a great way to dedicate your Thanksgiving Day meal and fellowship unto the Lord. Everybody can be seated after the blessing has been said.
The Dinner As you’re eating, ask someone to read George Washington’s 1789 Thanksgiving Proclamation. You can easily find this beforehand on the Internet. Highlight a short portion that speaks to your family, but make sure you don’t miss the first sentence: Whereas it is the duty of all nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey His will, to be grateful for His benefits, and humbly to implore His protection and favor; and whereas both Houses of the Congress have, by their 40 Studio G
joint committee, requested me “to recommend to the people of the United States a day of public thanksgiving and prayer, to be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many and signal favors of Almighty God, especially by affording them an opportunity peaceably to establish a form of government for their safety and happiness.” After reading it, go around the table to discuss what this document is and what it means to each person at the table. Be sure to include the children. Before your guests arrive, take the time to print some Thanksgiving Day riddles and jokes from the Kaboose
Family Network (kidsdomain.com/holiday/thanks). You can cut them into individual strips and put them under each plate or fold and place them in a small basket that gets passed around the table. Then, have each person either read their joke or ask their riddle. If the children are too small to read, have an adult help them by whispering the joke or riddle in their ear and then letting them say it out loud by themselves. When you print the jokes and riddles page, make sure you put the correct answer with the question. One year, I forgot to include the answers, and while my mistake made for fun conversation, all the jokes at my expense were brutal! You can also print some Thanksgiving Day word puzzles from the same website, which the kids and older family members may enjoy. For the very little ones, you can print off some turkey coloring pictures and have a place ready for them to color with some crayons.
Thanks be unto God for His unspeakable gift. Apostle Paul

“Come to the Table” was written over the course of many years spent entertaining family and friends. It was inspired by my desire for all of us to experience a richer level of communication whenever we gather together. Just as we meet around the tables in our businesses for a meeting of the minds to brainstorm and plan, we need to gather around the tables in our homes for a meeting of the hearts to experience true fellowship. ©2007, Brenda Laurence

Thanksgiving, after all, is a word of action.
After Dinner If you’re planning to watch a football game after dinner, go to the FamilyFun website (familyfun.com), search for “printable Thanksgiving Day football bingo,” and print as many bingo games as you want. Make corrections to the descriptions in the bingo squares to fit the teams you’ll be watching. Have a small prize ready for the first people to get bingo across, up and down. I recommend getting a $5.00 McDonalds gift card for the kids and a Starbucks gift card for the adults. Both of those gift cards are always a hit with my family. At our house, it’s a tradition for everyone to make their Christmas wish list while we’re watching the Thanksgiving football games. If you exchange names with your family members for Christmas gifts, this is a great time to draw people’s names with a few of their gift suggestions. When everyone leaves our home, my husband and I always clean up the kitchen and reflect on how thankful we are for our family and friends, the country we live in that allows us to celebrate the occasion and our home. Just as you spend time preparing for your Thanksgiving meal, spend a little time purposefully preparing your heart and your home for fellowship with prayer. Then everyone that comes to your table will walk away full and satisfied. ◕

MY DIRTY LITTLE SECRET Tammy Adams
I got a new vacuum cleaner for Christmas. I know, I know, that doesn’t sound like a very glamorous or inspiring gift. But honestly, it was the perfect gift for me. See, I love to vacuum. There is little else as satisfying as the crackly sound of a vacuum cleaner slurping up smooshed Goldfish crackers and tiny clumps of dried mud that fell off the bottom of my boys’ baseball cleats. Ahh … life’s simple pleasures. Before the holidays, I started noticing that my old vacuum cleaner wasn’t picking up as well as it used to. It still made those wonderful straight lines in the carpet that made it look like I had accomplished something. But, more and more often, the dirt and grime remained. I ignored it for a while because the carpet looked clean with all those fresh, straight vacuum lines. But as with most problems that are—forgive me—swept 42 Studio G
under the rug—things continued to get worse. My floors began to look grimy, and finally even those straight lines in the carpet could no longer hide the ugly truth. We were living with filthy carpet full of dirty crumbs. Yuck. Exasperated, I thought, “Enough! I don’t want my carpet just to LOOK clean. I want it to actually BE clean!” Suddenly, I was reminded of something similar I had cried out to the Lord a few years before. My husband and I had spent years being unhappy and dissatisfied with our marriage. We were constantly struggling. On the outside, we looked great. We went to church, socialized with our
friends and even started a family. But on the inside, we were broken, bitter, angry and, well, dirty. Make that filthy. One day, sick of living a lie, I cried out to God, “I’m so tired of trying to make things LOOK good. I want things to BE good for us!” It was just what God, my Father, was waiting to hear. Realizing we needed a deep cleaning, not just a quick fix that would make the dirt and grime look pretty, we began the long and painful process of coming clean with each other and with God. We now have a stronger marriage, and while it’s not perfect, it definitely is authentic, alive and moving in the right direction. Hallelujah! ☻
