HISTORICAL TIMELINE
The peak of the Chinese migratory period was recorded between 1880 and 1940. In 1929, the Selangor Zhongshan Association was founded with the goal of bringing the countrymen together to advancing their wellbeing.
Originally located at Jalan Panggong, it was later relocated to Kampung Attap in the 1950s. The membership of the Zhongshan Association declined over the years, leaving the building vacant and gradually fell into disrepair.
The family of Rob Tan formerly resides in th building, running a family-owned butcher shop. The remaining units in the building were eventually acquired by his grandparents, who rented them out for residency and small businesses.
As time passed, the tenantss moved out of the building. The building had been transformed into a dormitory for foreign workers. Even offers to convert the Zhongshan building into a KTV or brothel have been made.
Unwilling to let go of this building and memories that go along with it, Rob Tan and Liza Ho came up with the notion to bring local artists together by repurposing the building.
The Zhongshan Building received a RM200k grant from Think City that supports grassroots-led projects, which covered 1/5 of the restoration costs for its new usage as creative arts hub. It was officially launched in 2017.

INTRODUCTION SWOT ANALYSIS
W eakness
In the atrium areas of the first, second, and third floors, the space between the corridor and the wall is too narrow, making the space feel pack.
The staircase in the building is also narrow and the staircase to roof top has no handrail.
Some parts of the building layout is too compact and it looks like squeezing everything in one place.
S trength
There is great air ventilation in The ZhongShan Building as there are a lot of ventilation blocks and openings to create air flow in the building.
The atrium within the building which provides the occupants in the building a preview of what is going on in every level of The ZhongShan Building.
The open roof also brings natural light into the building. These makes the area be a unique gathering spot.
