Slick roads demand the right tires for safety
I
t’s one of the most indelible advertising images of the last few decades, and that baby nestled inside that tire says it all about how important it is to have the right tires for the conditions; everything is riding on it. You can get away with cheap headlight bulbs or even cheap wiper blades, but you best get that rubber right. As another Winnipeg winter looms, the strong recommendation from experts across the board is get winter tires! That means tires that are specifically designed for winter driving, as signified by a symbol on the sidewall depicting a mountain and a snowflake. Don’t be lulled into a false sense of security by running on so-called “all-weather” or “all-season” tires. “A lot of people are getting confused with the terminology of an all-weather tire”, says Jose Ferreira, Owner-manager of Fountain Tire at 3020 Portage Avenue. “A lot of companies will claim that they are almost like a winter tire; it’s not,” he emphasizes, “so don’t get confused and buy an all-weather tire versus a true winter tire made specifically
10 | FALL 2012
of a soft rubber compound, silica-based material that will give you proper traction. A true winter tire will stay soft and give you total traction at very cold temperatures like minus 30 or minus 40 degrees.” The other side of that coin is that the rubber is so soft that they will quickly wear down if used in warm weather. That’s not to say all-weather tires are not going to be effective for you if – like many Winnipeggers – you live in a condo and don’t have room to store a set of dedicated winter tires during the other three seasons. “The Nokian WR G2 is an all-weather tire that is winter-rated and good year-round,” says Derek Walker, Store Manager at Kal Tire, 1343 McPhillips Street. “Most of the time, they come with an 80 – 100-thousand kilometre guarantee, so you can leave them on all year round. They’re great in water, slush, snow; anything you can throw at them – they’re our number one tire.” If you’re a fan of Goodyear products, Ferreira says, “The right tire that most people are using today is a superb tire called the Goodyear Ultra Grip Ice WRT.
Customers will likely start to see special pricing on that tire from Goodyear around the beginning of October.” If you’d prefer a winter tire that is going to get you where you are going safely without breaking the bank, Ferreira says Fountain Tire sells an entry-level tire called the GT Radial. “That is a fantastic tire; I’ve got it on my wife’s car and my kid’s car,” he enthuses, “and they are running fantastic for us.” Walker, on the other hand, recommends the Arctic Claw, made in the U.S. by the Tire and Battery Corporation. “On average, the price of those is probably 50 – 100 dollars cheaper than your average Michelin X-Ice, and the difference is purely longevity; they just don’t last as long”, he says, pointing out that a good winter tire will give you five seasons, based on average usage of about 10,000 kilometres per year. If you’re going to go with the best of all options – studded tires – you can’t put them on before October 1, the date our experts say that they’ll start getting busy with changeovers. m

Our 2012 Pursuit Event Hits the Road
C
onfession time. I had been reading the annual Pursuit editions of Winnipeg Men since their inception a few years back, drooling over the hot rides and thinking about how cool it would be to have the opportunity to take part. When I was asked to participate in this year’s Pursuit weekend, I immediately started a wish list for myself containing two words: sports car. I have to admit to being a bit disappointed when it didn’t set up that way. More on that later. We met Saturday, the couples introducing themselves and excitedly talking about the array of luxury and sport automobiles lined up behind them, ranging from a royal blue Volkswagen Passat diesel to a red Mercedes C63 AMG Coupe, to a copper Porsche Cayenne hybrid SUV. The loose plan was to randomly swap vehicles at landmarks around town. Each couple immediately began to scan the itinerary for highway legs or anything with a winding road – not easy to find on the prairies when you’re looking for one, by www.winnipegmen.com
the way – and concoct their schemes as to how to get into the vehicle they wanted to snag for that section of the drive. It took a leg or so for the couple to get a feel for how this was going to go, and by the time we were leaving the Shelmerdine’s lot on Roblin Boulevard, we were starting to get the hang of things. “My favourite actual moment”, explained Darcy Reidy, “was when we were leaving Shelmerdine’s, and you guys (meaning my wife and I) were in the Mercedes and we were right behind you in the Chrysler 300. You peeled out of there, so we peeled out of there right behind you, and it reminded me of a movie or something!” At the next rendezvous, the chatter was as much about the fender bender some had witnessed as they came through Portage and Main, and which was being cleaned up by the time Glenn Tinley – representing the magazine and the leader of the pack – pulled into the lot to tell how he panicked a bit when he saw the vehicle pieces on the ground at the intersection! The afternoon continued this way, from

The Forks, we made our way to the Half Moon in Lockport to gorge ourselves on burgers and fries, before heading down River Road to Hwy. 9 and to the Perimeter before heading over to swap vehicles at the weigh scales on Hwy. 59, then to Bird’s Hill and through the park to exit at the East gate for the final leg to St. Vital Park. After an early start and a fun day of driving the latest automotive technology, everyone dispersed from St. Vital Park to check in to the very luxurious digs at Inn at the Forks, where the beds practically screamed, “Nap!” After grabbing a few winks, we met in the hotel lobby to pile into cabs that took us to Lobby on York, where our host, Carl, was in charge of serving up a feast that included gnudi and prawns, fresh-caught salmon and filet mignon, followed by chocolate cake and raspberry cheesecake, all washed down with the appropriate wines and beers Carl had selected to compliment the dishes. Sufficiently stuffed, the group headed back to the hotel for the night, before reconvening again for brunch, enjoying the top-notch food and service in the FALL 2012 |

2012 hotel restaurant before saying our goodbyes with special thanks to reps from this year’s title sponsor, All-Star Collision & Glass, for helping to make it possible. As for my confession, the day before the event, I was told that something had come up with the car that I was slated to drive, and I would instead be picking up a Chrysler 300 from Gauthier Chrysler. I was still stoked to be a part of the event, of course, but I admit that I did feel a slight twinge of regret, mainly because I have never really been a “Chrysler guy”. I walked into the service bay where the jet-black Chrysler 300 SRT8 was waiting for me. My first impression: Dang, that’s a cool-looking beast! I climbed behind the wheel and soon realized that I had actually snagged a sports car (that, in the words of Gord Leclerc, “…says, I’m a badass!”) masquerading as a sedan. Throughout the drive to the rallying point, and for the first leg of the drive, I discovered that this is a monster that you strap on, and as I opened it up – shifting with the steering wheel paddles – on an empty stretch of pavement west of the city, the 6.4L HEMI® V8’s 470 horses growled (Yes, horses growl. Go with me on this.), as it took my wife and me to, well, let’s just say we would have been right at home on the Autobahn… in just seconds – and with room to spare under the gas pedal, staying rock solid in its stance, and smooth as riding on new asphalt without giving up road feel – before I backed off the accelerator to resume more, um, regional speeds. I was hooked, and for the rest of the day, rotating through the other cars, all I could think about was how this nonChrysler guy had lucked out. That was the prevailing sentiment from all of the couples driving in this year’s Winnipeg Men Pursuit. Apart from meeting, hanging out and enjoying incredible food at dinner and brunch with all of these other couples, Heather Smith boiled it all down to this: “What a privilege to drive all of these luxury automobiles that you see, but you don’t normally get to drive. You can’t just walk into a dealership and say, Hi, I’d like to drive a Porsche, please!” Finally, the line of the weekend honours goes to Reidy: “The 300 needs to come with a radar detector, but the AMG needs to come with a good lawyer!”

2012 Acura ZDX SUV Classed as an SUV, the look of this vehicle is somewhat otherworldly, due in part to a design process that had engineers and designers working together under one roof – the socalled Acura Design Studio. What has resulted is a vehicle with clean lines inside and out, and some pretty cutting edge technology for its class. Powered by a 3.7L, 24-valve V6 that produces 300 hp controlled by a 6-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters, and SH AWD (SuperHandling All-Wheel Drive), the ZDX will go when you need it to go, and it’ll tow up to 1,500 lbs., too. Inside, the surprisingly quiet ride is due in part to Active Noise Cancellation technology that reduces unwanted cabin noise by countering it with frequencies from the audio system. That sound system, by the way, is a sweetsounding 410-watts pushing through 10 speakers, including a subwoofer.
The most common comments about the ZDX from the driver couples were that this was the vehicle that was absolutely made for Manitoba winters, with the sleek styling, quiet interior and heated seats keeping out the winter ugly. That said, as trippy as this surprisingly large vehicle looks from the outside, many of the couple felt that it seemed cramped inside – especially in the rear seats.

2013 Lincoln MKS When you first lay eyes on the 2013 Lincoln MKS, the first thing that comes to mind is…that this is not a Lincoln. At least, certainly not as Lincoln has come to be known, as the car that drivers, ahem, mature into. The car is mature, certainly, but its lines say, let’s pick up the pace a little and maybe even get into some trouble. The lines are
hunkered down and cat-like, making the purr coming from under the hood no accident. The premium engine for 2013 remains the twin-turbo 3.5-litre EcoBoost® V6, which provides V6 economy while generating a V8 boost due to the turbo direct-injection (GTDI) engine that produces 365 horsepower at 5,700 rpm. Two versions of the 6-speed SelectShift AutomaticTM transmission are available, both with steering-wheelmounted paddle shifters, with both offering a choice of fully automatic or manual control. The MKS incorporates Lincoln Drive Control technology that harmonizes suspension, steering, engine and gearbox to deliver distinct
driving personalities in normal, sport or comfort mode. This is about as sporty as a luxury car can get, and most couples gave it thumbs up for comfort and features like auto parallel parking and collision avoidance alarms. However, judging by the reactions of our drivers – who also had good things to say about the handling, responsiveness and look of the Lincoln MKS – the company still has a ways to go to shake the “granddad’s car” reputation. 2013 Lexus ES 350 The all-new 2013 ES 350 features immediately noticeable styling changes on the outside, with enhanced dynamics and feel. A lower posture, cleaner lines and longer wheelbase highlight the elegant ES profile while contributing to the notably sharper handling, superior stability and exceptional ride. Inside, the redesigned cockpit puts the driver firmly in control, while providing even more comfort for passengers. The 3.5L 268-horsepower V6 engine is managed by a 6-Speed electronically controlled automatic transmission offering three drive modes: Normal, ECO and Sport to modify accelerator response and fuel efficiency. Among the luxuries offered inside is a premium 8-speaker audio system. Optional Display Audio is available with the Premium Package, while a larger, 8-inch display screen is added with the Leather and Navigation Package, Touring Package and Technology Package.

The Lexus placed in the top three on the list of overall favourites amoung our couples, with most citing the butter-soft leather-clad luxury interior, complemented by sleek exterior lines and an engine that more than one couple described as having “jam.” Where the Mercedes and Chrysler 300 were the vehicles that everyone wanted out on the open road, the Lexus was the “cruiser” that made the winding River Road and Bird’s Hill park drives extra sweet.

2012 Chrysler 300 SRT8 The 300 is a proven performer in the Chrysler line not just for the outstanding performance of the standard 6.4L HEMI® best-in-class V8 with FuelSaver MDS technology, but because one look at the exterior tells you that this beast has all those horses under the hood. Once you get behind the wheel, the interior styling feels every bit as impressive, and when you put those horses to work, the steering wheel-mounted paddle controls (new
for 2012), let you rip through the 5-speed automatic transmission and get up to what feels like unlimited speed, all riding on 20-inch forged aluminum SRT® design wheels that feel like they grip the road better as the car accelerates, thanks in part to the SRT’s 3-mode electronic stability control. Lest you feel vulnerable handling all of that power, more than 70 safety and security features have been incorporated, making the
300 SRT8 a 2012 Top Safety Pick by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. If you get tired of listening to the growl of the V8, you can always substitute your own sounds through the premium 19 speaker, 12 channel, 900-watt audio system by Harman Kardon®. With higher-end vehicles from the likes of Lexus and Mercedes in the group this year, a surprising number of our drivers put the 300 SRT8 at or near the top of their favourites list, with more than one couple referring to the fact that this sedan looks, feels and drives like a sports car. Several couples referred to it as “badass,” and most took it above the posted limit (let’s say) because, well, the car begged them to. 2012 Mercedes C63 AMG Coupe The most remarkable feature of the Mercedes C63 AMG Coupe is the engine, not simply the fact that the 6.3L V8 delivers over 450 hp – capable of taking you from zero to 100 km/h faster than you can read this sentence – with a top speed of 250 km/h, which seems to be imploring its driver to open it up and go fast (very fast), it’s the fact that each of these stunning power plants has been engineered from start to finish by one mechanic, who signs off on the motor…on the motor itself. That level of engineering makes this vehicle elite in the sense that Lambos and Ferraris are elite, but for about half the price. The exclusive AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-Speed Sports Transmission offers several modes of performance, switching between them in a matter of milliseconds. On the subject of milliseconds, a fourth mode is called simply, “Race Start” which Mercedes euphemistically describes as “allowing the driver to explore the vehicle’s full acceleration capability.” Indeed.

“A lot of fun, and the performance was amazing…” – Darryl Mackie
Perhaps it was because the Mercedes C63 AMG Coupe stood out from the rest of the vehicles in the lineup due to its bright red finish, or perhaps it was because of the beautiful noise it made as it pulled into the lot, but this was the vehicle everyone wanted to get their hands on. None were disappointed, and all described the fun factor in getting behind the wheel and feeling the
horsepower at their fingertips (literally, with the paddle shifting and all) as the “AMG” – as it came to be called that day – seemed to squat down into a racing stance and take off even faster than it looked like it could. Mercedes-Benz Winnipeg MSRP: $67,700 www.mbwinnipeg.ca

From the standpoint of sexy, the Passat was in tough competition against the likes of the Lexus, Porsche and Mercedes, but our drivers were impressed with the list of features and the simple, efficient and comfortable features available as standard equipment. What really surprised many, though, was the power unleashed by this hybrid engine, with one driver practically drooling at how quickly he went from a silent stop to cruising at “expensive ticket-speed.” Porsche Centre Winnipeg MSRP: $79,200 www.auto-haus.porschedealer.com

The kettlebell will give you a whole body workout
I
f this was an old Saturday Night Live show Mike Myers would say, “Neither a kettle nor a bell. Discuss.” It’s a cast iron weight with a handle on it. So although it kind of resembles a kettle and in the sense of weight distribution it mimics a bell it will not make you tea nor signal dinnertime. It will, however, provide you with an excellent whole body workout. The kettlebell (KB) has so many exercise options that can only be barely duplicated by other pieces of equipment. The feature that makes it unique is the shape, and therefore the weight distribution. Although in many cases you can use a KB rather than a dumbbell there are not many times where the other way around applies. Let’s look at the top five exercises in which one large chunk of weight can make you stronger. The KB swing. Not quite a squat with the legs, but rather a small bend in the knee, a forceful pop from the hip and an engaged midline is all that is needed to get the KB in a momentum based motion. Once that momentum is gained, hang on and stay tight. What I love about this movement is the clear feeling of the core, the hamstrings and the gluteus engaging. The Turkish get-up (TGU). It’s true. As soon as ‘Turkish’ or ‘Russian’ is in the name of the exercise you know it will require a whole other level of difficulty. This exercise is king in my books because of the concentration it takes and the strain it puts on the shoulder, the core and the legs. Talk about a full body exercise. Too difficult to fully explain, but basically from a laying down supine formation you get www.winnipegmen.com
all the way up to standing while holding a KB straight up to the ceiling, then move back to the laying down position. Check out Google for some super strong people doing a TGU with 1/3 of their body weight. Farmers walk. Sounds easy enough (and it doesn’t have Turkish or Russian in the name), but turns out to be anything but. To mimic farmers carrying big buckets full of water and what not, the key to the farmers walk is for the shoulders to be pinned back and down. Most often a person’s grip is being challenged here, too. Walking a distance of about 400m with a 55lb KB in one hand and a 35lb KB in the other (an uneven farmers walk) gets taxing. Waiters walk. One arm straight up to the ceiling, locked elbow, bicep close to the ear, and walk. Anytime you put weight above your head the main part of the body is forced to turn on your core. Place 55lbs above your head in one hand and walk 50 feet, then switch. Do this a few times and you’ll see gains in your midline stability as well as shoulder girdle. Easy and effective. Traditional exercises. Beyond those listed above, there are countless exercises that you’re already familiar with in which you can use the KB. Goblet squats, deadlifts, back row and shoulder press for example. No need to get more dumbbells – just substitute your KB. One note: When purchasing a KB look for a handle that is a bit knurled. The polished ones make grip difficult, especially when sweaty - which you always should be when you’re exercising with a KB. How do you know what weight to get? Ask your trainer! m FALL 2012 |

Luxury is Worth Caring For By Amanda Thomas A luxury watch is an investment worth caring for. If maintained, a watch can have a lifetime of well over a century. Stewart Benzing of Stewart’s Horology suggests you provide your watch with a maintenance package every five to eight years. A trained professional will do a thorough cleaning, lubrication and gasket test to check for efficiency.
Bi
g Breitlin
The maintenance for an automatic watch is slightly more sophisticated. It runs like a pendulum off of the motion of your arm. When you’re not wearing the watch it essentially stops running, so Benzing suggests automatic watch owners use a winding tool. The tool is an electric device that keeps power going to your watch when it is not on your wrist. If you know you’re not going to wear your watch for a period of a few weeks or more it will still maintain the correct time, and the oils will stay in a fresh fluid state when resting on the device. This allows the watch to be picked up off the tool and worn without having to reset the time.

Perhaps the most valuable tip in overall watch maintenance is remembering you’re wearing a piece of elite machinery. While a watch may fit so comfortably that you could forget you’re wearing it, it should not be worn during your days’ most vigorous tasks. Gardening, water sports, and working out can be particularly hard on a watch. If you happen to get your watch dirty you can clean it with warm soap and water, but be careful not to submerge it. If you don’t feel comfortable cleaning your watch on your own, bring it to a professional who can take the mechanism out while cleaning it to prevent any damage.

Carving knives differ substantially from chef’s knives, and those differences are what separate a beautiful portion from a frayed chunk of entree. The better carving knives are thinner than a chef’s knife and often, though not necessarily, longer. The better knives come with a dimpled edge, which refers to the row of slight scallops running the length of the blade to “prevent the meat from dragging,” says Mark Bartling of Happy Cooker, “and give you a cleaner cut.” German manufacturers J.A. Henckels and Wusthof were the first to offer highend specialty cutlery, including carving knives, but Japan has recently become a world leader with blades which are thinner, lighter and harder than their German equivalent. The major Japanese manufacturers are Shun and Global. “The German knives are heavier. They developed their weight through conflict,” continues Bartling, “so they’re thicker, as weight added to their bludgeoning impact. The Japanese Samurai, being smaller men, traditionally used thinner, lighter blades,” and these traditions continue in the carving knives offered for sale today.
German steel is slightly softer than Japanese steel, the knives individually forged into shape before the final sharpening. Japanese blades use ‘Damascus’ steel, which has a higher nickel content steel folded over a carbon steel core. Japanese blades often show a dramatic patterning in the blade in the steel as a result of the layered blend of metals. The Damascus process hardens the steel and allows for a very sharp edge, but the downside is greater maintenance and a propensity to chip. German blades need sharpening more often, but their edge is more uniform. Carving knives need love too. “Look after your knife from day one,” says Bartling, “It is recommended to hone knives at each use, and sharpen knives professionally at least once a year after normal household use. And don’t use a roll sharpener as they scrape the edge away if you don’t know how to use them correctly.” “Never cut on ceramic, steel or glass,” adds Bartling. “They’re the worst enemies of a knife’s edge.” Ultimately, though, it all comes down to grip. When shopping for the perfect carving knife, try them all. “The most important part of the knife is the handle,” says Neil Baker of d.a. Neils. “The handle must fit well in your palm and feel natural. Blade quality is important, but comfort is vital.” “Of course,” Baker continues, “men and women select their carving knives along those same lines; men prefer a heavier blade, and women? Less steel, although I’ve sold smaller knives to men with hands so big they almost hid the blade and heavy knives to women. It’s all about how it feels in your hand.” A good thing to remember if you’re giving a knife as a gift. Let the knife choose you; after all, the most comfortable blade in your hand will allow you to carve the best cut for your guests. m www.winnipegmen.com

Recipes to impress from Chef Darryl Crumb
I
was rather puzzled when Winnipeg Men asked me to write an editorial to explain to readers how to properly carve a turkey. The first thing that came to mind was: how do I teach or explain a task that really needs to be watched to be learned? The second was: unless you’re in a 3 Michelin Star restaurant, there really isn’t a proper way to carve a turkey. I say just dive in! Thanksgiving and Christmas are more about family than if dad sliced the turkey properly anyway. That said, there are a few different ways to carve a Thanksgiving turkey. ● The method I generally use is to start with the wings. You will want to cut between the joint where the wing meets the body and place it on a serving tray. ● The next step would be to remove the legs. Let your knife follow the line between the breast and thigh and slice through the thigh joint and backbone. ● Next cut the thigh and leg joint, and place it on the tray. ● Lastly you will want to remove each breast whole before slicing. To do this, slice down the breast bone letting your blade hug and follow under the breast and down the rib cage. Do the same to each breast, then slice and serve. www.winnipegmen.com
