This is a proposal for the Arts and Culture Museum located in a picturesque site near the Owu falls in Nigeria. Owu falls is a spectacular and fascinating waterfall with a crystal clear ice cold water. It has a thundering fall of 140 meters (the steepest in West Africa) and is located around Ilorin in Kwara State. The building which stands at 17 meters high is to be an iconic statement celebrating the culture and arts of the people of Ilorin. The scheme provides a social / meeting area on the ground floor and Gallery Spaces on the 1st , 2nd and 3rd floor. The scheme is designed to take full advantage of the spectacular views by creating amazing break out zones, while at the same time regulating the atmospheric conditions in the gallery spaces in order to protect the valuable Art works against from damage.

“Eco-architecture sees buildings as part of the larger ecology of the planet and the building as part of a living habitat.”

Sue Roaf - “Ecohouse - A Design Guide”

After our site visit and seeing the gorgeous setting, our proposal was to create a house that sits comfortably in any context. It changes with the passing of the day and the seasons reflecting and responding to the surrounding landscape. Each element of the house can be placed on any site to take advantage of the most effective sustainable strategy available. Our design demonstrates its adaptable and flexible nature by creating both the two bedroom starter home and the three bedroom family home. The concept being that each living and sleeping spaces are positioned on the site depending on the most effective ecological strategy while incorporating the needs of the users which can also be altered over time as illustrated in “Designing Lifetime Homes”.

The 21st century workplace is about making a space which is flexible in its use, adaptable to the ever changing technology based environment we work in, and a place to communicate with others as well as to be able to work individually. The design is a reflection of our own personal desires for a sequence of spaces we would wish to work and create in. The series of spaces created by our structure vary from being completely public (to be used for creative meetings, gatherings, etc.), semi public/private (where smaller oneto-one discussions can take place), to private areas (here the individual can work away in a snug space created just for one). Technology and the ways we communicate has meant we are no longer confined to a permanent location but are able to be nomadic choosing for ourselves where and when we choose to work.

The Observatory is located on the lower slopes east of Longyearbyen Valley. It consists of three main elements connected by an enclosed walkway containing a staircase and tram. The entrance platform will provide a focal point where the public and guests can interact and anticipate their journey to the summit. At the summit, the observatory dome is located away from any sources of light pollution given off by Longyearbyen and it contains a raised viewing platform and external viewing area. Guest accommodation which can expand in the future is provided on the western slope of the site. The roof of the walkway is formed by a ‘lattice’ that slowly reveals the sky as you approach the summit, culminating in the splendour of the aurora borealis observation dome.

Encounter is a place to meet and relax with your friends while watching the world go by. We begin at Warwick Avenue, London – a place where people love to visit, explore and wander. Our idea originated from the canal boat which creates an easily transportable and flexible module in the form of floating decks along any of England’s extensive canal system. The façade - a liquid reflexion of the water - is a composition of moveable screens which can allow for a flow of movement from deck to deck. Tables and chairs are folded out from the deck depending on need.

In response to our initial investigations of the site and its context. We explored the way we ourselves have experienced moving through the city and in particular public gathering spaces such as the Piazza Castello. These places are often discovered accidently by wandering through the city and arriving at the piazza by the many entrances off them. Our building allows the visitor to drift in and out of the spaces as they wish. Here they are left to make the space their own and occupy it as they choose. The building itself (due to its temporary nature) has been designed to be as flexible and adaptable in order to meet the needs of the UIA Congress and later its future use. It is easy to assemble/reassemble and its parts can stand individually as well as within a group in an endless number of configurations.

This competition entry was featured in the Architectural Journal and also in an exhibition in Liverpool. The design competition was held by Urban Splash for a ÂŁ500 000 infobox in which to sell the surrounding property development. Also it was built with the potential to expand. The concept was formed by a journey which connects all the spaces by a walkway which carves itself out of the block.

Our affection and desire for London and the London bus has lead us on this journey to create a new design while at the same time respect what has gone before. We have designed a London bus for the Londoners essentially, and we have listened to what they want from a bus. We have incorporated their wishes and desires into the overall design.

a new bus for lo

The design incorporates modern elements, whilst retaining an almost stylistic link to its distant relative - the traitional London Routemaster. We have aimed for the bus to be versitile and flexible depending on the condition it is used in. We have designed with diligence, respect for the past, present as well as the future, and ultimately we have created a design of passion and one which encompasses its history through to the time of its inception. We have designed a bus which can be enjoyed by all. It is a bus for the people.
