The President Speaks It’s exciting starting off the new fiscal year, with new officers. We met recently and set out our strategic plan for the next year. Along with the four juried shows we have had the last few years we are adding L.O.S.T. (Lodi Open Studio Tour) in October. Letty Nava stepped forward and volunteered for chair both the membership show and the Open Studio Tour. The membership show and drive is well underway. We are hoping for more than 125 entries and 100 renewing members this year. Watch for the call to artist for L.O.S.T. We still have a couple of positions to fill in the organization. We need chairmen for the Small Works Show in November. We need to start planning for this show in August. We regretfully accepted Barbara Gillespie’s decision not to chair the Photography Show. We have lots of great photographers in the group; hopefully one of them will step up and volunteer to chair

the show. We also are looking for a chairman for the spring show. We need someone to take Joyce Costas place as Sunshine Committee Chairman. This is something that can be done from home if you are interested. Please contact me if you are interested in taking one of these positions or want more information about what is required. This month Greg Starnes takes over the newsletter, I am excited to see a new look. Our general meeting this month, July 8th, is a critique by Henrietta Sparkman the juror for the membership show. It is always interesting to hear the criteria that the juror used in judging a show. We will have a ½ hour social gathering starting at 6:30PM, the critique will start at 7PM. Membership show reception is July 11th, second Friday of the month. The art hop has been moved to the second Friday due to July 4th holiday. I hope you will try to come to both of these events. At the July Board meeting (July 1st) we will be adopting the 2014-2015 budget, this year the budget is almost $75,000. The board and I need each of you to support and help the gallery grow. I hope to hear what you are looking for in the organization and how we can meet your expectations. Let’s have fun this year, let’s share our art with the community and let’s make the Lodi Community Art Center, a center for art in the community.

July 2014 LODI COMMUNITY ART CENTER

Of course there’s a God but I don’t think it has a gender, but being a male, I feel comfortable referring to God as “Him”. Michelangelo and others visualized Him as somewhat of a wise and omnipotent old man with a long white beard and a fatherly appearance. He is leaning on a billowy cloud, looking down on us and taking pity on our small minds and large egos. Some say that is ridiculous, but faith will outweigh logic anytime.

Why do I think everything is an illusion? Well, think about it. We are composed of atoms and, according to my youngest daughter, if the nucleus of an atom is a basket ball in New York City, then the electrons are peas far away in San Francisco and the peas are circling around the basketball in NYC. What is between the ball and the peas? Nothing. Actually, all matter on earth could be squeezed into a small wastebasket. We are composed of practically nothing. The only reason we are solids is because the electrons are whirling around the nucleus at such a speed that, like a electric fan, it behaves like a solid when it is not. It’s all an illusion.

Is He an artist? Well, look around you and what I see is chaotic magnificence, untidy truths, and beauty beyond words. And according to many, he takes all the credit. Even in the pathos of human cruelty, there is His gift of death, which, like life, is just one of His many illusions. Life and death is all around us and most active under the bushes in your garden if you care to look. Yes, I would say that He is the greatest (and I hope He is reading this: I would like to apply for a place in his traveling production of magical illusions when my time is up). Artists are, like God, illusionist. They create things that resemble other things but aren’t real. They create sounds and sights that appeal to our aesthetics yet have no weight. But in a sense, everything around us is an illusion.

In reality, we are nothing but empty puffs of human dust greeting each other in the morning. And these human puffs of dust have, of all things, awareness of self. In my opinion, God exist because only somebody that stupendous could make us buy into this wonderful fantasy of life and death and rules to live by. My only question is where do our feelings of self go after our dust particles eventually get scattered in the wind? My guess is that these feelings will remain intact and transported to another dimension and, if we were good to each other in our past life, we can join His ensemble in his traveling magic show touring through the universe in a bus. It would be quite a sight…if you can get a window seat. There should be plenty of room since we are made up…of

Call to Artists By Letty Nava

Lodi’s 6th Open Studios Tour will be held Saturday, October 11, 2014 and Sunday, October 12, 2014. Hours are from 11:00am to 5:00pm both days. This Open Studios Tour offers the public an opportunity to visit artists in their working spaces where they will demonstrate their work processes, answer questions about their displayed art and sell finished pieces. In addition artists without studios may participate by presenting “Art in Action” demos along with sale of their work at local artist studios and local businesses and wineries. Presented by the Lodi Community Art Center, supported by a grant from the Lodi Art Commission

practically nothing.

Artists who need to have a place, other than their home studio, to set up a studio setting can request to share with another artist who has the space or display at local business or winery. Contact Letty Nava at lnava57@hotmail.com or call 209 327- 0575 for more information or to receive a signup form. Artists who have space that they might share with another artist should also contact Letty. We will try to match artists by contacting those with space to see if there is a fit with any on the list who needs a space. All artists must register with the Lodi Community Art Center. Artists may make their own sharing agreements.

Editor’s Corner By Greg Starnes

Greetings. My name is Greg Starnes and I am the new Editor of Lodi Art Center Newsletter. This is the inaugural edition under my stead. I would love to hear how you like it and I greatly appreciate any suggestions that you have on making this newsletter better. If you have content, please email it to me. I am a photographer and a relatively new member of the Lodi Art Center. As luck would have it, my first experience with the Lodi Art Center was the Photography Show this past February. The show was a wonderful experience. Everyone I met was very nice and I love the gallery space, unique and quaint -- perfect for art!!. My images faired very well in the show, with my “Mystic Light” image taking first place in the Landscape category and my “Orange Glow” image winning the People’s Choice award at the conclusion of the show. I was so impressed with the show and gallery that I became a member this past spring and I exhibited at the Spring Show at the Woodbridge Winery. Now for a little bit about me. I am a Fine Art Nature Photographer from Danville in the San Francisco East Bay. I enjoy photographing the beauty of the Desert Southwest and America’s National Parks. I

am awestruck the beauty of the world around us. It’s amazing the peacefulness and serenity that one can find just a few miles from civilization. I truly have a fond appreciation for the beauty of nature and I strive to capture that beauty in my photography. Some of my favorite places to shoot are Yosemite National Park, Sedona Arizona and the California Pacific Coast. I also love to shoot just about anywhere you can find water and of course in and around the beautiful San Francisco Bay Area. Gallery Staffing Information By Caroline Henry

As you all know, the Gallery is staffed by members. Here are a few tips on how you can help staff the Gallery. If daytime staffing is difficult for you, consider staffing Art Hop. In July it is actually the 2nd Friday, July 11. Staffing options were discussed in last month's newsletter, so this month I'd like to expand on a couple of other items. 1. If you sign up for and complete extra staffing days, you can bank free hanging fees for next month. While we ask those who don’t staff to pay extra to support the gallery, we also offer this bonus for those who give extra days. 2. We have a few members who partner to staff a couple of days a month. This is great if your health or personal inclination makes it best not to staff alone. 3. Take the time to look around the gallery early in your day so that you have a sense of where things are and anything new or changed. It will make things easier for you if someone inquires about a work of art, classes, or other topics. 4. Working on art during your staffing time is a plus. It reminds visitors that we are active local artists and gives them a glimpse of works in progress. 5. Please be welcoming to visitors, whether they are buyers or browsers. You may find yourself engaged in some wonderful conversations about art, the Lodi community, or ideas sparked by the works on our walls! Have a great day staffing.
