Ar Tan Tiong Li

Tiong Li is a registered architect in Singapore with 9 years of experience, specializing in diverse architectural typologies. Having worked with renowned practices including DP Architects and HYLA Architects, his portfolio reflects expertise in delivering award-winning designs that seamlessly blend creativity and functionality.

The ground floor of a landed house is reconfigured to regularise spaces around an awkward existing structural grid inherited from a previous layout. In doing so, the back-of-house area was resized to become a lot more efficient, with an opportunity to even incorporate a dry kitchen. The main hall now houses a separate study, dining and living area and feels spacious.

The design imagines 3 distinct “boxes” that that tuck away the functional aspects of an apartment, neatly concealing doors, bathrooms, kitchen and ample storage, thus creating a clearly defined and seamless living experience that maximizes sight lines and sense of spaciousness in a very limited footprint.

Going beyond the client’s brief to maximize storage, the intervention boldly celebrates the owner’s belongings as a part of the domestic interior. The objects melt away in a blurry of colours behind semi opaque reeded glass panels and cleverly add a personalized touch to the living area, all without losing the sense of space that would have otherwise diminished due to the significant buildup.
