The residential resort community of Bahia Beach is set on a spectacular beachfront site on the island of Puerto Rico. Set amid lush vegitation, the residences are surrounded by views in every direction, overlooking the ocean, golf course, lakes and mountains. A spectacular new golf clubhouse and inviting village center provide a social hub for the community. The architecture brings together Asian, Mediterranean and tropical influences to create a simple yet elegant style unique to this resort. This mixed-use highrise, located at the prominent intersection of Brickell and Miami Avenues in downtown Miami, is a signature presence on the Miami skyline. Two elegant residential towers rise out of a 10-story parking deck, which also houses boutique streetfront retail space on the first two levels. Designed in a sleek, contemporary style, the residential towers rise to 37 and 45 stories. Loft-style residential units also wrap around the central parking core. Located on one of the most spectacular sites in the Caribbean, just four miles east of Paradise Island in the Bahamas, the 230-acre resort is completely private, yet easily accessible by ferry. Conceptual Schematic Design Development Sited within various locations in a park along the Merrimack River, each viewing pavilion was designed to provide rest and shelter along this newly landscaped one mile stretch. Inspired by industrial and historical mills flanking the new walk, each pavilion would also mark and exhibit a historical timeline of events and pose as sculptural forms along the river’s edge. Dynamic shapes respond and salute the river and its wildlife reserve. Theatrical night lighting also animates and paints the 15 to 18 foot steel glass, and concrete canopies.

Located along the Golden Corridor near the village of Cabo San Lucas, Esperanza is one of the world’s most luxurious oceanfront resorts. As the design architects, SB Architects took the resort’s award-winning spa - voted the best spa in Latin America by readers of Travel & Leisure for three years in a row - and made it even better. The project doubles the number of treatment rooms, and adds a VIP couples treatment room. New hot tubs and showers enhance the men’s and women’s relaxation areas, and new fitness and cardio areas add a new dimension to the spa experience. Taking advantage of the sloping site, a new, expanded staff training and prep facility is tucked discreetly below the new treatment rooms. Eight-foot curved walls form a series of portals - symbolic entry points to pockets of seclusion within the spa. A new allee through the heart of the spa - lined with high walls, curving benches and mosaic floor patterns - creates an internal destination and view within this private retreat.

Located along a spectacular waterfront stretch of land fronting the Gulf of Mexico, this unique lowrise resort is designed to “float” above a lush mangrove field and orient toward 500 linear meters of white sand beach. Environmental sensitivity was of upmost importance to the design solution, which is characterized by a node and loop system. The nodes are “islands” of terra firma where structures rise above the surrounding vegetation and cenotes (natural sinkholes which create serene ponds throughout the site). These nodes are connected by a loop circulation system which is made up of cart paths and boardwalks. Public spaces and amenities are strategically placed throughout the string of islands to keep each island small and to create a sense of adventure as one makes their way from one node to the next.

Sited 300 feet above the Pacific Ocean, this property sets a new standard for luxury and sustainability. Designed to meet LEED Silver standards, every aspect of the design emphasizes a deep connection to the site, maximizing privacy and views, while minimizing impact on the site. Dug deep into the hillside, each cluster rests on a berm of earth and rock so that the entire resort seems to grow organically from the site. Marked by cascading waterfalls, hidden by landscaped berms and reached through small gates opening onto private courtyards, every unit acts as a telescope opening to the ocean. Located on the windward side of the Lesser Antilles, this largely undiscovered island provides a dramatic backdrop for the newest member of the Raffles collection of resorts. Hidden coves, coral reefs, rainforests and the towering Piton mountains demand a carefully designed resort that grows naturally out of its spectacular site. In a unique, mixed-use approach to the destination, a single great house sited on the site’s highest point blends hotel and golf clubhouse functions for a comprehensive experience. In the style of a grand estate, the main hotel overlooks a great lawn and expansive views of the Caribbean. Founder’s residences flank the main hotel, while villa clusters step down the hillsides. This new resort on the spectacular site of Maui’s iconic Black Rock, will replace an existing dated hotel and has created the opportunity to work from a clean slate to create an authentic, forward-looking redefinition of luxury. In our design approach, we are employing a modern design aesthetic, tempered by the use of warm, contextually appropriate forms and materials, which remain true to the nature and culture of the site. Despite a high-density objective, concentrating the massing within two towers allows us to keep the remaining structures to six stories, preserving views through the site. These lower-scale structures also invite a more intimately-scaled set of materials and details that reference a traditional Hawaiian palette. The plan revolves around a series of courtyards, each of which opens up to embrace the ocean, producing a sequence of unique experiences.

Located on a quiet, protected beachfront on the southeastern coast of the Caribbean island of Anguilla, the site for the new Fairmont Anguilla is the centerpiece of the 368-acre Conch Bay destination resort currently under development. Sited to maximize views of the Atlantic Ocean, the hotel is designed on axis with the sunrise. The hotel, which steps from three to five stories, overlooks heavily-landscaped gardens, while two wings of guest accommodations embrace the views of the water. Low-rise casitas, housing clusters of condo-hotel units and ranging from one to three stories, are scattered throughout the landscaped grounds. The hotel and condo-hotel component for this expansive resort on the southwest coast of Costa Rica enjoys a spectacular location on a point of land surrounded by the Pacific Ocean and a 160-slip marina. Parking and back-of-house functions are located beneath a podium level arrival plaza, and are wrapped with a stone facade to give the appearance of an ancient seawall growing out of the rocks at the water’s edge. This concept provides spectacular views to the restaurant spaces and other public functions which sit atop the podium. A major function space overlooks the marina and an oceanfront spa has it’s own pools and relaxation gardens. The branded residences are located in three 7 and 8-story buildings sited along the ocean cliffs. The resort will eventually include a golf course and clubhouse with designated golf residences, and founders home sites woven into the lush landscape.

This project’s goal was to renovate and expand the famed Lodge at Rancho Mirage to become The Ritz-Carlton Rancho Mirage. Set on a spectacular hillside site, with views of the desert valley below and mountains in all directions, this venerable five-star resort has grown by 14 acres. The task included a complete renovation of the hotel, as well as the addition of 190 new units and a full service spa. The new units are a combination of spa suites, fractional units and whole ownership condominiums that also will be part of the hotel’s rental program. The design team has updated the architecture and interiors to better reflect the desert setting. With an emphasis on natural colors and tactile materi-
