hen I started Studio Z, I realized that my biggest love is in photographing high school seniors & teens. I just love their energy, creativity, and helping them express themselves and tell their story. They inspire me every day! We’ve started this magazine to showcase our model program and destination photoshoots, but also to help seniors and teens in planning their sessions. We want to give a glimpse of the overall experience we strive to give surrounding all of our Studio Z sessions, but we’ve also realized that we can cover even more territory by including relevant articles with topics involving style tips and trends, current social culture as it relates to this age
OUR STAFF
group, mind/spirit/body! We also wanted to be able to introduce you to some of the fab local small businesses that we partner with so you can get to know them as well. It’s so important to show our support and love for our small businesses and local artists. So with all of this in mind, welcome to our first ever edition of Studio Z Magazine! All of the photos are by Studio Z Photography, and we hope it helps in giving inspiration for other seniors and teens as they plan their own sessions. I’m so thankful for all of my clients and their families, people that I always end up calling friends, and so thankful to call this my job!

Your Stress Free Session Make the Most of Your Pre-Consult Before your appointment, put thought into what type of session would mean the most to you and how you want to express yourself. Scope Out Locations Pick the spot that speaks to you and reflects who you are. If You Love Props Bring items that are special to you. These can be anything at all: medals, things you collect, special mementos, achievements, instruments, food, bubble gum, glitter, balloons, a pet, etc. Plan Your Outfits Put thought into them. Your outfits are an important element in showing your unique personality. Accessorize!! Accessories are so important. Jewelry, hats, scarves, sunglasses, cute purses/ bags, etc. They not only add visual interest to your photos, but also give you a place to put your hands to keep them busy and give a natural, fun vibe to your photos. Feel Rested and Relaxed There’s no rush! Professional Make Up and Hair Consider having these services done for your shoot. You’re only a senior once! Whether you like a natural look, or have a flair for the dramatic, a professional makeup artist knows exactly what to do for a camera-ready look that represents you! They know what photographs 3

well, and will work with you to create your own personal style. It also adds an element of fun to your session! Prep On Your Own Having your nails done is a MUST! They need to be clean, and well-maintained. Don’t Get Overwhelmed If you’re unsure about what to wear, and the decision feels like too much, or you simply want the “special treatment,” we’ve got your back! Ask how we can help style you, which is included in the Showstopper Package. Be Yourself! The more natural you look and feel, the more your pictures will reflect your true personality!
BIG MISTAKES MADE ON SET 1. Chipped nail polish 2. Not planning complete outfits in advance 3. Forgetting your accessories 4. Wrinkled clothing 5. Getting HANGRY on the shoot, try to eat at least a snack beforehand! 6. Wearing the wrong makeup. Wear matte foundation, powder, and avoid over highlighting.

Details matter! Check out Emilyann’s all-white ensemble, which she used to her advantage in adding bright, dramatic drop earrings in turquoise, and a basket full of springy blooms. This elevates the plain white jumper to a more playful level!
Add multiple textures to a look to create depth! Sophie’s tied back velvet dress has lace capped sleeves to add layers to her look and help her stand out in the busy scenery.
When choosing outfits, remember your clothing can double as a cute prop! Adelyssa used her adorable sun hat to keep the rays away, but also held it at her side to accent her all-black ensemble. Bonus points for the cute “do not disturb” stitching!
THE WHOLE LOOK How to accessorize and complete looks in new and exciting ways! By Studio Z
Pump It A tried and true accessory technique is the color burst. The key is to find colors in your outfit that are down played, and find an accessory to accent them. For example, Taylor chose to find golden pumps and a top to pull out the color from her dreamy pants.
Head Banger A Flair for the Dramatics Molly’s sleeves here are billowy, scalloped, and have cute stitching to boot! Off-theshoulder sleeves with flair are in right now. They add a cute pop to a photograph, and can make interesting shapes!
An easy way to make your hair stand out is to dress it up! Adding a hat, shawl, or headband can make a huge difference. Here, Molly, Celine, and Julia all wear floral headbands and clips to accent their dresses. This adds a little whimsy, and compliments the apple orchard location! spring/summer 2018

ou wake up in the morning, wash your face, stretch as tall as you can to awaken your senses, take that first sip of coffee, and put together the perfect head to toe look that is just right for the day you are about to begin. Oh wait. That last part didn’t happen, as it doesn’t for many women. Instead we stumble through our closets piecing together enough items to cover our bodies, secure our modesty, and walk out of the door with some semblance of an outfit that will get us through the day. And that’s probably what it does, it gets you through the day. But who wants to just get through? Not me. Not you. Not most women. So why do we have such a difficult time creating the perfect head to toe look? Why is the idea of styling ourselves so foreign and complicated to the female form? The answer is as simple as our morning routine. There are steps to creating a complete look, that when practiced with the same consistency that we do our morning rituals, we can change the way we feel about ourselves and about how we “get through” the day.
The Perfect Look is Layered It starts with a strong foundation that is built upon. The pant, skirt, top, dress, jumpsuit. Each of these is the foundation, but without the layers, the look doesn’t come to life. That’s why boho is so beautiful. It is an attitude and a style that allows you to be you, and to mix and match in ways you never thought possible. The printed maxi skirt with the crop graphic tee. The distressed denim with a flowy boho blouse. The mid-length dress with bell sleeves, a cinched waist, and the perfect feminine details. All are great starting points, but to set yourself apart you have to add the layers, the special details that take your look from simple to styled. To the maxi skirt, add a denim vest, statement necklace, bold cocktail ring, half top knot and a red lip. To the denim, add a suede fringe vest, long tassel necklace with a natural stone, big hoop earrings, a bold bang, and bangles. To the dress, add a tall boot, a pop of red leather jacket, a messy bun, natural lip and smoky eye and dainty jewelry. Simple to styled. And boho style lets you do that so easily. The rules are gone, so you can

take chances on mixing prints, colors and even seasons. Layer the suede fringe vest in the summer. Throw a leather jacket over a soft, feminine pale pink print in the winter. It’s about being unconventional. Components are Important Accessories are a key component of styling. It’s important however, to think of your accessories as all parts of your look that do not make up your foundation. This includes your layers, your jewelry, shoes, hair, makeup, outerwear, nail polish. Each component brings the look together, but without forcing it. With boho beauty, you have the freedom to pull your look together more organically, resulting in each piece being part of the whole, but still telling its own story. When we complete the look from head to toe, we feel better about ourselves. We carry ourselves with more confidence. We have an energy and an aura that is so positive and uplifting it can be felt by others as we walk by. At Vintage Love that’s what we do. We dress you up. So that the next time you wake up, you will wash your face, take that big stretch, sip that piping hot coffee, and create a look that conquers the day. And you really will spring/summer 2018

destination studio z What makes a Studio Z photo shoot trip such a great experience? Fun, food, clothes, locations, makeup, and the special personal touch! By Studio Z

I
f you’re like me, then you know what it’s like to have a touch of wanderlust in your soul – the desire to explore new and unique places, experience different cultures, try new and exotic food – all of this, by nature, is in the heart of every fellow wanderluster. This experience feeds that desire, but is also about so much more. It’s the experience that you create – the memories that last forever, the times you share with people you love, and meeting and connecting with new people. Over the last couple of years, we’ve planned two to three destination trips each year. Originally, these were model team events only, but popular demand has brought us to add a new type of destination trip open to all ages, but with limited spaces. However, our Chicago trip is exclusively offered to our senior model teams. Each summer we take two days and stay right in the heart of the city. We create styled shoots with different looks, along with having hair and makeup artists on board to style the models. We travel to different parts of the city each time we go, and make sure we plan for amazing food, and even a little shopping too! This trip is so much fun, and such a great experience for everyone involved Another location we’ve traveled to the last couple of years is Palm Springs, California. I have so much love for this place, and for our trips there! The California sun and the eclectic areas have me hooked. This past January, we revamped the experience. Myself, along with a group of six other nationally recognized photographers planned this trip together. We each brought models from our own area, which gave the seniors the opportunity to meet new people their age. We partnered with different boutiques, including Avon’s very
own Vintage Love Boutique – who made the trip there to style them personally. The seniors modeled the styled looks across the shoot locations. As always, we also had hair and makeup artists. We shot at so many amazing locations, like Joshua Tree National Park, Salvation Mountain, Moorten Botanical Gardens, and The Weekend House in downtown
“
They’ve gained so much confidence, and see themselves in a brand new light” Palm Springs. We loved it so much, we decided to make it something we do each year, with seniors, and also with other age groups as well. For our first all-ages exclusive trip, we headed down to Destin, Florida for a collaborative shoot. If you’ve never seen the beaches in Destin, they’re among the most beautiful beaches in all of Florida! White powdery sand, and turquoise water, I was ready to move in! This was a shorter stay, with shorter shooting times compared to Palm Springs. We had one primary day with our five models, who ranged in age from high school sophomores to college kids. We had a styled shoot in the morning in a beautiful, beach side town, and then an evening shoot on the beach leading up to sunset. We partnered with
hair and makeup artists, along with two boutiques. The second day of the trip we had a private photo shoot with my own model and her mom in some gorgeous locations. For this session, because it was her own personal photo shoot, I helped her style her looks so that she had outfits and accessories that reflected her own personal style. We had so much fun, and I absolutely loved this day! When we travel together for our destination photo shoots, I believe it carries several meanings for the girls and their families. For some, it’s meaningful parent/kid bonding, for others it’s a fun trip with friends. When it comes to seniors, they’re dealing with the anxiety of facing the end of a huge chapter of their lives, and while it’s exciting to think about going off to college and starting that new chapter, it can also be overwhelming and, let’s face it, a little scary. These destination trips help in giving them an amazing experience to add to their senior year that they will never forget. For the parents that come with them, I can’t even tell you how meaningful it is to spend that extra time with their kids before they go off to college. The models also love the fact that they meet and get to know people from different parts of the country. They make new friendships, and often those friendships stay with them well beyond the trip. I’ve asked the seniors that have traveled with us for past destinations what they felt they gained from these trips, and while they mentioned all of the above, they also talked about how it makes them feel about themselves. They’ve gained so much confidence, and see themselves in a brand new light. For me, hearing this is what makes my heart content. It’s the root and purpose of what I do, and the reason I love my job spring/summer 2018

jettin’ off? Don’t Forget Accessories You can never have too many because you never know what might be needed on the fly. When you’re traveling you can’t pop home and grab something, so if you think you might use it, bring it!
Bring Bra Backup For girls, always remember to bring both a strapless bra and a sticky bra. These, especially the sticky bras, are always a necessity.
Invest in a Steamer Bring a steamer when you travel, clothing is always wrinkled coming out of a suitcase! These are relatively inexpensive, and make a huge difference.
Static Solutions Another travel must, fabrics are prone to static when all packed together, and this is a quick fix. You can purchase Static Guard, or bring dryer sheets to rub down your clothes.
Document Your Trip palm springs, california january 2018 vest vagabond vintage shirt ralph lauren jeans pac sun rings acne bracelets earthbound shoes vans make up jami cox hair genevieve gian styled by cassie mcbride model austin salinas
With experiences like these, you’re going to want to take photos and videos along the way to remember the experience. You can use your phone, or a Polaroid camera to add a cute, vintage feel.
Bring Comfy Shoes When you’re going to a place where you’ll be doing a lot of walking, like a city, bring comfortable shoes in a tote bag so you can slip them on between locations. You don’t want to be stuck walking 20 blocks in heels!
Keep Connected Stay in contact and attend meetings about the trip. Make sure you’re up-to-date on travel plans and daily itineraries. 11

How Do We Tell Your Story?
How to make sure your session showcases your own unique personality. By Studio Z
A
sk yourself these questions: What makes you unique? What would make you feel like you’re standing out and showing the world the real you? What do you love? What’s important to you? What might tell the story of who and where you are in your life right now? When planning for your photo session, these are the questions we find the answers to. Prior to your session, the first thing we do is schedule your consult, which is where we sit down and talk about these questions and plan the details of your session. This is definitely one of the most important elements in a photo session…making sure it’s telling your story. For me, as the photographer, this is my goal – capturing what makes you unique, what makes you your own authentic, individual self. For some, this can mean being photographed in your favorite, special place that speaks to who you are, like the beach, or even a favorite store or ice cream shop! For others, it may mean including your pet, your best friend, your achievements, your art or your favorite hobby or collection, your favorite food, and always your favorite style – the possibilities are endless. Whether you’re into nature, your edgy and urban, or into fashion, the important thing is that you’re showing your authentic self, what you love, and what you’re all about. For example, a unique session that stands out was with my own nephew. I knew that he had a donut obsession that went way back to when he was little. So, although he had a session at the football field to show that side of him as well, we also did an additional session at Dunkin’ Donuts, which was so much fun and turned out to be among everyone’s favorites! Some more favorites were the juice bar Restore in 15
spring/summer 2018
downtown Cleveland, a vintage record store in Ohio City, bringing Disney into a session with glitter and Minnie Mouse ears, a Volvo graveyard dating back to the 1920s, inside Progressive Field, and at various cupcake and ice cream shops. I even shot in a cemetery once for a girl that loved all things haunted! During her first senior session in the cute little shopping area here in Avon, she and her mom talked about how they loved attending ghost tours together, so we decided to plan a second session just for fun to showcase that, and they turned out to be their favorites. We also did a beautiful session for a senior whose family belongs to a boating club on Catawba Island. She grew up spending her summers there so it was very meaningful to them to have her senior photos taken there. It’s always fun to do shoots with pets too, we’ve seen everything from dogs to horses! The funny thing is, often the more traditional locations and posing are the shots that the mom’s believe will be their favorites, and then the quirky, fun, creative ones always end up taking the forefront. They’re very special to them, and to the seniors, which definitely falls in-line with my shooting style as well. As the photographer, I don’t consider it as just taking “pics” of people, because what I want to create is much more than that. I want to create art that features your life, which is why my “your life as art” came to be. I want them to be photos that you’ll look back on one day and say, “that was so me!” and love what you see

LOVE THY
SELF(IE) Growing up in the age of social media can lead to a whole new brand of self-consciousness. By Arbela Capas

spring/summer 2018
T
he day I began to start being aware of my appearance, I feel like my anxiety increased ten fold, and hasn’t stopped since. And I’m sure every person feels that way. In middle school I discovered all the appearance enhancing techniques; eyeliner, hairspray, hair straightener and so on. I remember being in 6th grade and my best friend putting eyeliner on me for the first time as my eyes kept twitching uncontrollably. In 7th grade I straightened my hair every single day for a year, because I thought my thick, wavy hair was ugly. Some of the alterations we make to ourselves can be good, liberating even. But there is a fine line between filtering your appearance for your own well being and doing it to please a societal construct. I remember struggling to please everyone with my appearance; making sure I looked different enough, but also cool enough to fit in with everyone else, while still fulfilling society’s standards of beauty. I remember around the emergence of MySpace, the selfie culture slowly began. And so did the judgment surrounding it. I remember girls using captions on their photos like “just felt like posting a pic because I was bored lol” or “I’m so ugly ha!” I never looked deeply into this until I realized the ugly truth: we as girls felt the need to justify doing anything that may not be pleasing a man. I remember learning about the popular editing system called PicNik and using it to edit my photos to make myself feel and look cool. I remember feeling good, also feeling guilty for feeling good. Because I heard boys and girls making silent judgment about photos that were “over-edited.” Only towards my last year of high school did I finally not care. Yes, I had been sucked into the obsession with selfie culture, but I wasn’t about to apologize for it to anyone else. It’s all part of this confusing judgment limbo that women get thrown into every day. A constant struggle between looking “too natural” versus “too fake”, or “too presentable” versus “too slutty”. This is a vicious cycle that ultimately makes women edit their appearance — and even personality — even more. I believe there needs to be something that is just for us, women, no one else. However, I have a theory that ultimately the
emergence of “selfie” culture is a good thing, and has helped women finally feel a different kind of appreciation for their beauty. A kind of appreciation can be just for themselves. It took me forever to know who I was but with confidence, good company and just a little bit of vanity, I became comfortable in my own skin. We filter ourselves every day, but I think social media and technology has created a whole new definition to that word. With
“
It made me think, aren’t women allowed to feel comfortable and pretty in their own skin simply because they want to?”
the eruption of Instagram and selfies, it has given an opportunity for a new revolution of self love and beauty enhancement in our world. The important part is making sure there is a balance kept — both in the way we “edit” ourselves and the way we see ourselves. In the grand scheme of things, I always saw “backlash” as another manifestation of girl on girl hate, or judgment. It made me think, aren’t women allowed to feel comfortable and pretty in their own skin simply because they want to? Can’t they post a picture of themselves without right away being accused of being too vain, too attention seeking, and of course; too filtered? It’s the same way with makeup, or as
I would cleverly call it; our “real life” Instagram filters. There have always been mixed reactions towards girls about the amount of makeup they wear, or to what extent they enhance their appearance. Selfie culture, along with things such as makeup are always used as a way for men to somehow complain that women aren’t showing their “true selves.” Saying that we use filters both on pictures and one our faces to hide our natural state. But the truth is, it’s our society that is filtering out who we really are. It is especially hard for many woman to ever be their true selves, when they are surrounded by judgment and expectations every minute of their lives. Now I’m in college and I feel more liberated every day. Because I’ve learned to not only accept myself without the makeup, or the Instagram filters, but to allow myself to indulge in those enhancements as well. It’s helped seeing other girls on social media or in person, finally lifting each other up and encouraging ourselves show off a bit instead of accusing each other of being too “braggy.” I don’t like to think of makeup or editing filters as a way that is “stifling” our beauty. I like to see it as a way we are exploring it, re-creating it and evolving it. I think there’s no problem filtering out impurities out of your appearance, if it makes you feel good and makes you happy. What I don’t like is when we as women are forced to adjust our appearance based on what society tells us and what it’s deemed as. Whether the criticisms around us are saying we look “too fake” or not “perfect enough” I say don’t listen to either. We are the ones in control of our own filters, and our own image. So take your selfies and add your filters. Empower yourself through a picture of yourself on Instagram, there’s nothing wrong with that. Either way, we all shine in our own way, no matter what beauty standards are layered over us each and every day. We have a right to filter ourselves and edit ourselves as much as we want. My only challenge is that when we do it, we do it for ourselves, because in that we will feel much more liberation in the long run See More of Arbela’s Writing Online blog: the battle of arbela insta: arbela_c spring/summer 2018

We have so much diversity, and so many unique possibilities for locations to visit and plan photo sessions! Some may be obvious Cleveland landmarks, like Public Square and the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame for example, others may be hidden gems you don’t even realize existed, or wouldn’t necessarily think twice about. Check out a few of the locations that have inspired some of our past seniors. Maybe this will help inspire you!
