MEASUREMENT
THR EAD I D EnTI f I C ATIOn To identify an unknown thread two information are necessary: the pitch and the outer diameter for a bolt thread and the inner diameter of a nut thread. The pitch of a thread is the distance from one flank to the other in mm for metric systems or the number of pitches per inch for inch threads. External thread First you measure the diameter of the thread with a caliper. The digital caliper offers inch and metric units. The diameter will show you whether it is a metric or an inch thread. You continue with the pitch gauge. Please test the single sheets until one of them fits precisely into the thread. Then you can read the pitch of the thread on the gauge which is printed onto it. Now the thread slide is used which contains all details about the different thread types. You can compare the measured values with the data on the thread slide to find out the correct thread type. All measuring tools are described in detail on the following pages. Internal thread Whereas it is relatively easy to determine the external thread using the pitch gauge, it is complicated for internal thread types. If you don’t want to destroy the workpiece and avoid major technical effort you can just roughly measure and try out. Proceed as follows: Measure the core size of the thread with the outer legs of the caliper. This should be the core hole size which has been drilled before the thread was cut. In our example we measure an external diameter of 23 mm. The formula to determine the core hole diameter is: dk = D – P(Core hole Ø = Nominal Ø – Pitch) or: Nominal Ø = Core hole Ø + Pitch Now you can check the core hole table of the thread slide to find a suitable core hole size. Here it should be noted that the core hole drillings do not often exactly meet the specifications, they are mostly larger than the guideline. According to the formula for the present example there are two possible metric sizes M 24 M 25 × 1 or × 2 or a possibility for one inch size G 5/8 × 14 pitch/inch. A decision is made
SInKIn G / MEASUREMEnT
by trying out the appropriate screws.
ROTATIOn TABLE The rotation tables are built into a stable plastic housing. There are three different types. The Filetor shows all required information to determine a thread. The Tolerator displays all the tolerance values up to 500 mm. The Converter is a conversion table from millimeters to inches and vice versa. All rotation tables are available on request.
THRE AD SLIDE The thread slide is made of aluminium and the gauge is printed in black. It contains all sizes for metric thread identification (Whitworth and pipe thread).

The digital caliper offers inch and metric units. With the adjoining conversion table you can determine the unit in inches as a metric measurement, and so to convert. An inch is defined as 25.4 mm. The diameter will show you, whether it is an inch or metric threads. You continue with the pitch gauge. Please check the single gauges until one of them can be fitted exactly into the threads. Then you can read the pitch of the thread on the gauge which is printed onto it.
DIGITAL C ALIPER The calipers have cross-tips, depth gauge and a locking screw. The precision mechanics is made of stainless steel and hardened. The batteries for the use of the big digital LCD-display
are replaceable. There is also a R232 data output. The caliper is packed into a stable plastic case together with a spare battery.
PITCH GAUGE SHEETS 6 / 10 / 12 / 20 / 22 / 24 / 28 / 48 / 52 / 58 Sheet
PITCH GAUGES pitch of a thread. Several gauge sheets are summarized in a fanlike fixture. There are different combination of sheets for metric threads and inch threads from 6 sheets up to 58 sheets in just one tool.
SInKIn G / MEASUREMEnT
Pitch gauges are suitable for internal and external measurements of the pitch of a thread. They work under the light gap method. The gauge is placed on the thread and it will be tested whether the pitch of the thread matches together with the gauge. Each sheet represents one
