Wrights Lake to Grouse Lake
by RYAN MARTINEZ
LOCATION: Near Kyburz. Google “Wrights Lake to Grouse Lake.” DISTANCE: Four miles out and back. DIFFICULTY LEVEL: Intermediate/difficult. Moderately trafficked. 1,210 feet elevation gain. KNOW BEFORE YOU GO: Check with the Eldorado National Forest before going to ensure the trail is open (916-500-4712). Lots of mosquitos. Dogs are allowed on a leash. FUEL UP: Check out Sweetie Pie’s in Placerville (577 Main Street) for a quick but delicious breakfast before heading out; posthike, try Wally’s Pizza Bar (4079 Cameron Park Drive) in Cameron Park for eclectic pies in a casual setting.
WHY WE LOVE IT:
Beautiful lakes and abundant waterfalls. Perfect for overnight camping and stargazing. TRAIL NOTES: Bring bug spray, plenty of water, and consider a water filter. There is cell coverage in Desolation Wilderness, but go with phones fully charged in case of emergency. Practice “leave no trace” ethics; if you pack it in, pack it out. Respect signs.
