RSPCA News & Events

September 2019 marks the 80th anniversary of the beginning of the Second World War, but 1939 was also the year that the Rochdale branch of the RSPCA and the National Veterinary Medicine Association decided to acquire the former Woodman Hotel on the corner of High St and Redcross St to set up a new animal clinic and shelter. It became operational on 2nd October 1939 and was officially opened by the Mayor on 6th December 1939.

RSPCA staff and volunteers continue to work hard to care for the hundreds of animals and birds that cross the threshold of the animal centre every year but this can only continue well into the future with the continued support of the people of Rochdale. We work hard to try to raise enough funds to cover running costs of the animal centre for the abandoned and abused animals or wildlife casualties brought into our care, but what has recently become apparent is the value of what we do for the community as a whole. Many of our volunteers have stories of their own to show how the proximity to animals has helped them deal with health issues and loneliness.

KALYPSO

Kalypso the tortoise had been brought in by an inspector who had been to a house and found her in a shoebox. The owner said he’d bought it off Gumtree the previous week and forgotten about it.

She weighed only 47grams, her shell was very soft and she wasn’t in good condition.

Fortunately one of our dedicated volunteers asked if she could look after her. She did her homework and bought whatever was needed to house and feed her and took her home. It took a long time but with the right food she’s now double in weight and size, her shell is hard and she’s developing a personality.

ZIPPY

One year old Zippy came into our care due to a serious change in his owner’s circumstances.

Zippy has developed an allergy to certain foods which presents itself as hair loss and scabs on his face and ears but we have identified food that has settled his skin. Zippy is full of energy and is quite a livewire.

AMBER

Amber is a 10+ year old beautiful ginger female. She was very nervous of staff on arrival but has since become more comfortable around our staff and volunteers. Amber is very independent and likes to do things on her terms. She is very playful; her favourite thing is to play with a feather chaser but when she is used to you she will wrap around your legs.

HOW YOU CAN HELP...

BECOME A FRIEND OF ROCHDALE ANIMAL CENTRE

Please help to keep the Rochdale Animal Centre running. A monthly donation can be for any amount starting from as little as £3. Your donation is important to us, and in return we would like to give you some member benefits including an invitation to visit the centre to look behind the scenes.

SPONSOR A POD

The Animal Centre is a rehoming centre and our cat pods can be used many times throughout the year. To support our work we have launched our Sponsor a Pod scheme. It will help us to continue to give the most abused cats, dogs and other animals in society the care they deserve during their stay with us at Rochdale before being adopted. One year sponsorships of varying amounts are available and you’ll receive benefits too. Sponsor a pod in the knowledge that you or your company are helping the animals in our care that deserve a second chance in life. Please check our website for details. www.rspca-rochdale.org.uk

DONATIONS

We always need donations of clothing, bric-a-brac, books, music etc, so please dig deep into your wardrobes and cupboards and find those items you haven’t worn or used for years! Bring them along to your nearest RSPCA Rochdale branch charity shop or to the Animal Centre. If you have large items of furniture or too many bags to carry we’ll gladly pick them up. We can also accept most household appliances, as we are lucky to have the services of a trained PAT tester.
