A home for all seasons
With over 12 years’ experience, Oak and Orange duo, Heather Gampe and Sarah Jobse are design lovers, mums and builders’ wives. Here, they share their tips to create trans-seasonal spaces.
Embracing textural and organic combinations like polished concrete and sandstone rock walls paired with neutral colour schemes, textural linens and large picture windows, Heather and Sarah create that holiday at home feeling for all seasons. How do you approach designing a transseasonal home?
Whether you’re building a brand new home or renovating, it’s a great idea to orientate your living area towards the north. It will mean in the summer months the sun will head over the top of the home throughout the heat of the day and in the winter months when the sun is lower, the sunshine will beam into the main living rooms of the home, creating warmth. To create a truly trans-seasonal home it’s important to consider your climate and how you like to entertain. In both of our homes, we have pools for those hot Sydney summer days and outdoor fires/pizza ovens for cosy winter entertaining when the pool is not in use. Do you have any tips and tricks to remember?
Mood boards are a must! If you are going to be designing or styling a room, a mood board helps you to make sure all the pieces are going to work well together before the financial commitment. You need to consider natural light and size because colours and materials will look different depending on the amount of natural light a room receives and can impact how a room feels. Size may also determine the final colours and materials we choose as we don’t want to make a small room feel smaller, we want to do everything we can to make it feel bigger – or we may wish to make a larger room that has ample natural light feel cosy. When it comes to styling a home, common mistakes we see people make is choosing furniture, rugs or art that is the wrong size. Do you have any interior must-haves?
We love a kitchen island bench for when we are entertaining guests, it’s nice to be able to talk with friends even whilst we may be preparing a meal or cleaning up. Another musthave is a conversational area by the fire. Whether it’s an indoor fireplace or outdoor fire pit, a warm cosy area inside or outside the home will be well used and enjoyed during hot summer days or cold winter months.
SOAP OPERA
Turn up the drama, because bathrooms are all about statement furnishing and bold, moody décor this season.
Antique aesthetics
In a return to tradition, we’re embracing our past and opting to restore historical elements and original architecture, while choosing to include upcycled or antique furniture that adds character and a touch of Victorian luxe to our spaces.
EARLY SETTLER
Our sanctuaries and our stages – bathrooms are the comfortable spaces that deserve a touch of luxury, and yet they’re one of the most often-forgotten rooms when it comes to styling. While the space is undoubtedly our go-to when it comes to relaxation, that doesn’t mean it’s a space for dull décor.
For those wanting to refresh a tired bathroom space, timeless finishes like marble and white tiles paired with a practical layout mean the bathroom is luxurious but still warm, comfortable, and functional. To add a little pizzazz and contrast to the bathrooms’ usual white on white interiors, black or brass accents add depth and drama and instantly elevate the room. When it comes to choosing furnishings, a freestanding bath takes centre stage and adds another layer of luxury, while touches of antique or Victorian-inspired fixtures is a statement that exudes indulgence.
