LIFE

WORK

According to a recent study, you can do it all. A recent IPSOS study showed that BlackBerry users do more than find a balance between life and work. They find themselves with a whole extra hour in their day*. But perhaps that’s not a big surprise. After all, with access to ten email accounts, your calendar, plus features like mobile web access, and a 3.2 megapixel camera, productivity is the only logical outcome. ®

the agenda It hardly seems possible that we’re already publishing the fall edition of Style Manitoba! After the summer that never was, the new season is upon us, and with it, the long waited for Fall 2009 Parade of Homes. Just when you think you’ve seen it all, Manitoba’s builders raise the bar yet again with fabulous showhome designs that will be open to the public from September 19th to October 10th, 2009. There will be 100 homes on display this fall, representing the quality, skill and craftsmanship of 33 talented builders in 28 subdivisions. Those who tour these homes are in for a real treat! Teeming with the latest clever design features and augmented with impeccable interior decorating, these display homes truly are a tribute to our province’s finest builders. As always, sales staff will be available in each showhome to answer questions about its unique features. Our builders are not the only ones rolling out their finest – for the past few years, land developers have also been pulling out all the stops and showing Manitobans how communities really should be built. Forward thinking developers have committed to careful consideration of the environment, encouraging the growth of native plants, shrubs and grasses in certain areas, while retaining natural wetlands in others. The preservation of green space is also key, with well-planned paths and trails weaving throughout communities to encourage

more walking or cycling, and less driving. Most importantly, however, family living is at the heart of each neighbourhood. The great news is that there are still housing options in some of the more established but desirable subdivisions like Pritchard Farm Southlands, River Pointe and RiverRidge, while newer opportunities exist in areas such as Sage Creek, as well as Waverley West’s Bridgwater Forest and South Pointe. And a short commute from Winnipeg, Stonewall’s StoneRidge Meadows offers an excellent option. Several out of town readers have written in lately inquiring about residential housing opportunities in Winnipeg, asking questions like where the best family neighbourhoods are located and how much house could they get for their dollar in our city. My response? Anyone considering relocation to Manitoba should tour the Fall Parade of Homes – it’s simply one of the best ways to hit two birds with one stone. Checking out the Parade offerings would allow interested parties to simultaneously tour excellent communities and view the latest housing options on the market. As for what they’ll get for their buck - with our province’s stable economy and brisk housing market, people can still truly get real value out of their real estate purchases. Add that to Manitoba’s reputation for friendliness and you’ve got the recipe for an excellent relocation choice!

... and much more!

Thoughts I was very pleased to see local talent featured as the cover story for Style Manitoba’s summer 2009 edition. My friends and I are fans and caught Alana Levandoski’s performance at the Winnipeg Folk Festival this summer. She did not disappoint. Thanks for covering her and other Manitoba talent within the magazine.

Sonya Hinds, Winnipeg It was nice to see a home that seemed more within reach for the average buyer featured as the fabulous home in the summer issue of Style Manitoba. Not everyone can afford the homes you usually cover, so it was a nice departure from the norm. Well constructed and offering an appealing floor plan, this Warkentin built home was really up my alley. Darryl Johnson, Winnipeg Thanks for the great renovation coverage Style Manitoba has been providing to readers! My husband and I have been searching for a qualified renovation company for some time now, and will definitely consider All Canadian Renovations after seeing the work they so skilfully did on previous residential projects in Manitoba. Andrea Polson, Winnipeg Style Manitoba’s ongoing coverage of restaurants and the informative entertainment guide included in each issue are much-appreciated columns for readers. My wife and I read every issue from cover to cover, and often choose the latest restaurants you’ve reviewed for dining out. Please keep up with the great coverage!

Winning Innovations By Christine Hanlon Photography: Michael Roberts

The homeowners really appreciate the innovative features that enhance both the style and lifestyle in their 3,000-square-foot Royalwood home with 1,600-squarefoot lower level. Evidently, the Manitoba Homebuilders Association was equally impressed. The organization awarded its top-level gold award to this Gino’s Homes masterpiece during the 2009 Spring Parade of Homes. It doesn’t take a visitor long to see why. Right off the foyer, a stunning staircase fans out from the second floor, with open risers and glass paneling instead of railings. Built by Jake’s Fancy Stair Work, the staircase and glass flow up to the second storey and continue on to form a bridge that connects the separate sleeping quarters of the home. This bridge offers views from the main floor and lower walkout level. A year in the works, the staircase was an integral part of the home’s design. It was essential that it be perfect. For instance, the glass is 12mm thick. A thinner glass could not have created the same effect. “A lot of what sets this house apart is found in the details,” say the homeowners. The varying heights of the main floor ceilings are another example.

Coloured and stamped concrete from Klassen’s Concrete surrounds the pool area.

Stacked black Prairie Stone from Alsips gives the exterior a clean modern look, complemented by a paving stone driveway from J&D Penner.

Built by Jake’s Fancy Stair Work, maple stairs with open risers and glass panels capture the open concept of the home.

With their metallic finish, the 12-inch backsplash tiles enhance the home’s contemporary feel, while cabinetry from Kitchen Craft injects another modern note. Right: K&S Electronics outfitted the home with audio, home theatre & alarm systems. A two sided fireplace from Alsips adds a dramatic note to the space.

“A lot of people are now going with nine-foot ceilings throughout,” explains the builder, “but we wanted to change it up.” The kitchen features an eight-foot ceiling, which increases to 10 feet in the informal eating area, and then to a full 19 feet—or two floors—in the great room. Virtually extending from floor to ceiling, the windows in the great room afford a spectacular view of the lake behind the home as well as an abundance of natural light. “We lined the walls with windows everywhere

we could,” says the builder. “At the same time, we wanted to make sure the home was as energy-efficient as possible.” Jeld-Wen triple-pane argon-filled windows with a low-e coating combine a solar block that prevents UV rays from fading furniture and flooring with a solar shield that keeps the house cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter. The two-sided gas-burning fireplace from Alsips adds extra warmth. Rather than a traditional mantel and chimneystack combination, the builder reconfigured the fireplace into an autumn 2009 | STYLE MANITOBA | 13

innovative design. Then, to soften the lines of the otherwise rectilinear space, Gino’s Homes curved the overhead catwalk and used a matching rounded backdrop for the entertainment unit with its dark espresso stain. The design and colour scheme continues into the kitchen where Kitchen Craft’s New Haven cabinet door style sets a contemporary tone. A lot of attention was paid to incorporating the built-in appliances from Coast Wholesale Appliances into the cabinetry. The wall ovens, dishwasher, Wolf slide-in cooktop and Sub-zero fridge fit in seamlessly. Beside the fridge, the cabinets face the great room, further uniting the two open spaces.

bedroom, they double as an accent for the great room. The second floor also continues the outstanding exterior vistas. A sweeping panorama to the end of the lake can be seen from both the master bedroom and the catwalk that overlooks the main floor. A unique feature of the master bedroom is the recessed alcove which embraces the bed and sidetables from Dufresne Furniture and Appliances. “Those 18 inches add so much more space to the bedroom,” note the homeowners. It also lends the bedroom a distinctive look.

The light fixture from Robinson Lighting features a porcelain wave glass shade that coordinates with the pendants in the kitchen.

Interior Illusions coordinated the window and bed treatments in a combination of lustrous fabrics.

On the other hand, the dining room is separated for privacy. It offers a phenomenal view of both the front streetscape and the back landscaping onto the lake. “We wanted views of both front and back,” explain the homeowners. The back window was dressed in an elegant combination of sheer and silk by Interior Illusions. An exterior door leads onto a private balcony, which spans the entire back of the house. Built using maintenance-free Duradeck, it features aluminum rails and smoked glass from Windeck. Meanwhile, inside the dining room, the builder used decorative glass panels to dress the dining room. This is a recurrent feature throughout the house where different motifs are used to coordinate with each space. Two of the upstairs three bedrooms have decorative glass panels. For the shower Robinson Bath provided two rain showerheads and a bar system, each individually controlled.

So do the 12-foot high ceilings in the master ensuite, a few steps down. A 6 ½ foot shower with a frameless door by Shodor sustains the spacious ambiance. The entire bathroom is fully finished from floor to ceiling in ceramic tile from Curtis Carpets. Underfoot, 12 X 24 inch travertine— with a smaller version in the shower—was installed in an offset pattern and sealed on-site. Coordinating glass tiles embrace the tub and vanity backsplash. The air tub is from Robinson Bath Centre, as is the steam generator in the steam room of the home’s lower level.

understated

The design of the walkout lower level revolves around the swimming pool. A door from the exterior leads directly to a change room and adjoining steam room. Facing the pool is a complete kitchen and bar, with microwave, wine fridge, dishwasher and slide-in range. “Lower level bars have become very popular,” notes the builder, “but we wanted to take the concept one step further.” The builder had a brilliant idea. Why not make it easy to serve food and drinks from the kitchen to the pool area? The solution was to build a metal-clad counter with high

sliding windows that not only open but can be completely removed to create a pass-through food/beverage center! Inside, Kitchen Craft created an elegant stand-up bar table that matches the ceiling detail and is within reach of the games area. In fact, the lower level is fully equipped, with a fireplace, home theatre and exercise room. And like the rest of the house, both the lower level and the exterior were wired and connected to the audio system by K&S Electronics, which also supplied the state-of-the-art security system. “It’s possible to access the video surveillance system via Internet from anywhere in the world,” says the builder. Gino’s Homes wanted to incorporate some of the latest technology, materials and building techniques into the home. From the structural wood floors to the fully insulated and heated garage, the builder has succeeded in making the home as comfortable and functional as it is beautiful and stylish. And when the market didn’t have a ready solution, Gino Homes’ superior ability for innovation came into play. The result is a home filled with new and exciting features that are sure to be popular with Manitoba homeowners as they plan their own dream designs!

About the Builder After winning the top title at the two last parades— along with many other gold awards as well—Gino’s Homes has four new entries in the fall 2009 Parade of Homes. The purpose of this annual event by the Manitoba Homebuilders Association is to recognize quality and innovation. Gino’s Homes offers plenty of both. A true custom builder, Gino’s Homes has the knowledge, insight and experience to take each prospective homeowner from conception to reality. That ability has been passed on from one generation to the next in this family-owned business. The company’s founder, Giorgio “Gino” Cotroneo trained in all aspects of new home construction in Europe, eventually earning the status of Master Builder. In 1968, Gino brought these standards of quality and integrity to Canada while continuing his legacy. Gino’s Homes embodies a code of ethics by which the family business continues to thrive. No matter what the size, style or design, this commitment is the foundation on which every Gino’s home is built. Gino’s Homes has become Manitoba’s preferred choice for true custom homebuilding by offering super quality at affordable prices.

Community Committed By Kelly Gray

Mercedes Benz is a product that quietly states luxury, confidence and dependability like few other brands in the market. It’s from this height that the local Lone Star Motors dealership reaches into the community to offer its support to a host of organizations. “We believe that it is important to participate in the community and provide support where we can make a difference,” says Lone Star Motors’ President and General Manager Brian Lowes. And make a difference they do. According to Lowes, the dealership that has historically stood out as the leader in Manitoba’s luxury car market contributes substantial amounts of monetary support each year to charity events and activities. “For example, we are one of the key sponsors of Winnipeg Harvest’s Empty Bowls project,” says Lowes, who explains that the project is one where school kids create pottery bowls that are eventually sold off at a simple fare community supper to raise funds for the food charity. This past year the project ramped up the action and hosted the first Winnipeg Harvest Celebrity Bowl Auction and Gala that raised more than $10,000. This year the event will be held in early November. Lone Star will be there.

Lowes reports they also provide support for the Children’s Hospital Foundation Ice Crystal Gala. Held at the Winnipeg Convention Centre (this year’s event is slated for November 23rd) for the past three years, the event creates a magical wonderland of lit trees and sparkling snowflakes amidst which attendees sit for a traditional turkey dinner and festive entertainment to support a great cause. “We are also there for the Grace Hospital and help a number of golf event charities like The Cardiac Classic (St. Boniface Hospital Research Foundation) and Drive Fore the Stars Golf Classic in support of Junior Achievement,” says Lowes, remarking that they just gave away a two year lease on a Mercedes to a hole-in-one winner at the recent Mondetta Charity Classic. One of the community activities that strike a chord of pride with Brian is the dealership’s support of Manitoba Naturalists’ Society, where they have helped plant more than 300 trees. “This comes from our Smart brand where we try to link up with programs that have an ecological focus. This past Earth Day in April we launched a Green initiative that would assist the Society in their efforts to plant new trees along river pathways at Assiniboine Park. Once a month we have been gathering

staff, family like my wife Amber, and friends as well as customers to get out the shovels and work on bringing the pathways back to health by removing predatory plant species and planting native trees and bushes along the self guiding trail through the park,” he says. Lowes adds that the event is not only fun but has proven to be a good team building exercise for staff members.

“Its important to lend our support to those that have helped make us such a successful dealership. In the end though, the true satisfaction comes from being able to make a real difference in lives that are being impacted by health and social issues,” he notes, acknowledging that corporate sponsorship is a responsibility they see as part of their place in Winnipeg.

He suggests that the fit with the Naturalists is a good one for the Smart brand given its low emission qualities.

“We want to show people that we are about more than just great cars and luxury. We are about involvement and community participation as well. If what we do can make that difference, then we have been able to live up to our mission that is all about satisfaction and experience. This extends to not just our customers, but also to those who may never have been to our showroom or driven one of our cars.”

“The owners of these cars have formed a club with about 50 members where they can get together and help bring about positive improvements to the environment as well as a number of other activities. Lone Star has been supporting their efforts by supplying a place for them to meet and catering their events with snacks and coffee.” Mercedes Benz itself is a very substantial contributor to national and international campaigns such as PGA tournament charities. Lowes comments that they saw their opening to contribute as a way to bring this commitment to help others down to a local level.

Distinct Culinary Fusions Tavern in the Park’s Barb and Dale Yuel say goodbye to Assiniboine Park greenery and hello to downtown buzz. Enter Winnipeg’s newest gourmet destination: Lobby on York. Lobby on York’s spacious digs are elegantly outfitted, sporting cutting-edge New York style. Add a mini-sushi bar, ultra-friendly service, distinct culinary fusions, and weekend live music, and you’ve got a knockout nosh. Recommended pre-dinner cocktails are Kentucky Tea and Neon Porn Star. Fittingly tart is the Neon Porn Star’s aqua blend of Lemoncello, Hypnotiq liqueur, Triple Sec, and lime juice. Likewise, Kentucky Tea is a quencher of bourbon and iced tea. Ocean bounty dominates Starters with selections like Shucked East Coast Oysters and Smoked Salmon. We get whisked up with Sesame Crusted Crab Cakes. Lightly fried, sesame spotted, and set in pools of honey dill, tartar, and mango, these palm-sized patties are herby, sour, and citrus sweet. Pulled Duck Confit Quesadilla is worth flocking to with its soft tortilla roll of tender duck, peppers, smooth brie, hoisin sauce, and cool dips of cilantro sour cream. Grilled Romaine Heart and Marinated Beet salads outdo typical tosses. Rustically grilled and smothered with Caesar, Romaine Heart is a satisfying crunch with croutons, green capers, apple smoked bacon bits, and organic cherry tomato. And gracing our maple balsamic-dressed Marinated Beet salad are slabs of luscious beet that harmonize with chevre, blackberries, walnuts, and arugula. The muse for Mains is mainly lake and sea, with plates like Panko Crusted Pickerel and Cedar Plank Salmon. But we stick to the land. Herb Crusted Rack of Lamb is braised, prepared Moroccan-style with spiced gravy, and paired with chickpea-stuffed Indian Flat Bread. Meanwhile, Wiener Schnitzel boasts a pair of breaded veal cutlets upon pillowy spaetzle dumplings. Dipped into ruby-red lingonberry sauce, this schnitzel is mild and comforting. Two Australian St. Hallett wines accompany. For white, Poacher’s Blend of Chenin Blanc, Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc grapes are alive with tropical and floral notes. A red selection – Gamekeepers Shiraz Grenache – is a big and burly wash of fruit, spice, and pepper. For dessert, a warm slice of Chocolate Poppy Seed Cake finds its way to our forks. Drenched with hot dark chocolate, this fluffy cake’s marriage of poppy seed and cocoa is beguilingly addictive.

“Any occasion calls for a cake” Natalie Lopes has come a long way since her childhood forays into baking via the batter-raising light bulb of her toy oven. Today, as owner of Natalie’s Cakes, Cupcakes and More, she forgoes packaged cake mix and standard cake pans in favour of one of a kind, delicious cakes, cupcakes and other sensational baked treats. Lopes has been wowing family and friends for years with her unique, personalized special event theme cakes, and at their urging and with their support, she has established a burgeoning home based business that is garnering a literal word-of-mouth reputation for her decadent desserts. “My husband has a huge Portuguese family and I’ve had lots of opportunities to share my baking at various family events,” Lopes says, recalling the comment of one family member who so looked forward to her baking that “they didn’t care who the party was for, they just wanted to see the cake,” she laughs. Self-taught, both of Lopes’ grandmothers – “phenomenal cooks and bakers” in their own right - were major influences on her development as a successful baker. With that foundation in place, Lopes enjoys bringing the baked canvases that emerge from her oven to life by expressing her creativity with exquisite decorating. “I’m passionate about cake decorating and making a cake as personal as possible, whether incorporating a favourite colour, flower, or hobby – anything meaningful for that person,” Lopes says. She excels at using her creative and artistic skills to create custom cakes. When it comes to possible themes, “the sky’s the limit,” says Lopes, who has made cakes for events ranging from birthdays to weddings, baby showers, corporate events and even divorces.

“Any occasion calls for a cake,” she says. “When there are people getting together to celebrate, why not have a cake?” Cupcakes are another specialty and Lopes loves the options cupcakes provide. “They are so cute and personal. They’re also convenient and can come in a variety of flavours, styles and themes.” Lopes offers mini, medium and regular sized cupcakes as well as a giant cupcake that serves eight. Also popular are her individualized cheesecakes. Like cupcakes, they are convenient and can be customized. Along with cakes, Lopes produces delicious muffins bursting with blueberries, as well as cookies and galettes – rustic openface pies filled with a fruit and drizzled with toppings like caramel. To achieve a truly homemade taste, all of Lopes’ creations are made from scratch, with the freshest quality ingredients. Cakes and cupcakes are available in a range of flavours with fillings such as chocolate mousse and berries and cream. Real butter cream frosting in flavours like chocolate-peppermint, mocha and vanilla cream cheese is the finishing touch. In keeping with her high quality standards, she offers delivery and set-up to ensure the cake arrives intact and is beautifully presented. After all, “it’s not just a cake, it’s a conversation piece.” Lopes admits there is a downside to creating custom baking. “People don’t want to cut the cake – it’s so meaningful to them and they don’t want it ruined!” As much as she enjoys the reaction people have when they see a cake made especially for them, Lopes is adamant that all of her creations are ultimately destined to be enjoyed. After all, she notes, “cake is meant to be eaten.”

Awakening the

senses By Leigh Patterson Photography: John Johnston Several bird of paradise stems stretch across an artful backdrop of bound twigs anchored at the base by a cluster of white lilies. Red branches and gold thread intermingle in a bouquet of a dozen yellow tea roses wrapped in tropical leaves. A tall architectural glass vase garnished with light-reflecting beads contains a single perfect flower set into river rock. Elegant pashmina scarves drape seductively over shelves glittering with an assortment of giftware and gourmet delights. At every turn, an element of surprise awaits at Signature Floral Gallery, where shopping for flowers and gifts is enhanced by mystery, textures, colours and other elements intended to enliven the senses. “It’s certainly not what people are expecting,” says owner Connie van Reenen. Whether designing floral arrangements for home décor, corporate offices, movie sets, art gallery installations, weddings, funerals or helping a client select an impromptu, thoughtful gift, van Reenen and her dynamic team of floral designers make each creation a sensory experience. “Every flower tells a story. It’s important to get flowers to speak. Each has a different energy. They can express emotion visually the way words can’t,” says van Reenen. She challenges the status quo, preferring instead to incorporate unusual flowers and plants such as orchids and bamboo along with unexpected and dramatic natural items as diverse as lychee nuts, eggplants and feathers into her leading edge designs. These provocative twists set Signature Floral Gallery apart. So too does the personal connection van Reenen establishes with her clients. A brideto-be will never be given a catalogue of set arrangements to choose from. Rather, van Reenen takes the time to consult with the bride on the details - from the bridal gown and bridesmaids’ dresses to the venue - to ensure the flowers reflect the bride’s own style. “My role is to make sure I elevate the beauty of her special day,” van Reenen notes.

36 | STYLE MANITOBA | autumn 2009

She also achieves great personal reward through funeral work. “It’s very special to be invited to help a family honour a loved one. I consider myself a conduit to understanding the essence of the person and providing something that reflects their life.” For one client, van Reenen designed a floral tribute of blue hydrangeas and green orchids evocative of the client’s late husband’s connection to the outdoors and his elegant style. “Funeral arrangements don’t need to be stuffy,” van Reenen says. “Floral tributes should be as unique as the person being honoured.” Holidays are another opportunity for a new take on tradition. A Christmas centrepiece may feature white lilies mixed with pine and tropical foliage, silver thread and candles to catch the light. In some cases, van Reenen and her designers will combine fresh and permanent flowers to extend the life of the arrangement. The stunning artistry inherent to Signature Floral Gallery’s designs is often described as “living art” by clients. One client who hosted an event graced with a Signature creation told van Reenen that she had numerous comments from guests about how the dazzling flowers “brought the space to life.” To invoke the spirit of creativity in others, Signature Floral Gallery offers classes in floral design; participants take home a completed arrangement. “It’s an intimate, relaxing evening – a night away from the real world,” van Reenen notes. Signature Floral Gallery carries gourmet products such as Harden and Huyse fine chocolates and a wide assortment of loose teas, as well as teapots, coffee presses and serving trays. All of these can be included in luxuriously wrapped gift presentations. Every aspect of the Signature Floral Gallery experience is an opportunity to indulge. It’s the perfect place to enliven the senses, stir the soul, share the beauty and unravel the mystery. www.signaturefloralgallery.com

Style meets luxury at the Diamond Gallery, which is celebrating its prestigious new location at 1735 Corydon Avenue, where clients have the rare opportunity to acquire impeccably designed jewellery. The Diamond Gallery specializes in working with Canadian diamonds and platinum, as well as beautiful and distinctive design work. Their new location is two doors away from the old, but the new space couldn’t be further in terms of look and function. “We’ll be celebrating our grand opening from Sept. 22 to 26,” says daughter Lisa Malbranck, who has joined the family business as a certified gemologist and designer. “Our new building has so much more light, which helps show off the beauty of the jewellery. It also has geothermal heating and cooling, which is much better for the environment.” Her parents, Allan and Anita Malbranck, opened the original Diamond Gallery in 1992 at 1705 Corydon Avenue. Allan has nearly 40 years of experience in the jewellery business, following in the footsteps of his father. “Our forté is designing pieces for our clients. In our new studio, we have a showcase of our work so clients can see our portfolio,” says Lisa. “We create wonderful designs, and then we have them done by Canadian craftsmen who specialize in platinum and fine details and offer the best quality work. A lot of

jewellery sold elsewhere is massproduced overseas. The quality, weight and finer details on ours will allow your new jewellery to become a family heirloom.” Much of the custom work is romantic, with engagement and wedding rings at the top of the list, followed by anniversary pieces such as necklaces and rings. Along with diamonds, they find clients are asking for pearls and coloured gemstones. Showcase collections at the Diamond Gallery have a distinctive look, showing off the superior craftsmanship of the spectacular array of jewellery. The Malbrancks understand the necessity of catering to a wide range of tastes; their store offers everything from contemporary to classic to the retro-antique style. “By offering such a wide spectrum of gems and artistry, we entice our clients to indulge in the adventure of creative design for their own collection,” says Allan. “The resulting design will become a personal companion for a very long time.” Platinum is a favourite medium at Diamond Gallery, because unlike 18 karat gold, which is 75 percent pure, platinum is 95 percent pure. Platinum has few alloys, making it so pure that it doesn’t fade or change colour, plus retains its shine for years. The pure white lustre of the metal reflects the true brilliance of diamonds, and it provides the best setting for precious jewels. Platinum’s purity also makes it kind

Luxurious New Location By Susie Strachan • Photography: John Johnston to the skin, because unlike other metals, it doesn’t cause allergic reactions. The Platinum Guild International has only four Canadian jewellers recommended on their website at www.preciousplatinum.com, and the Diamond Gallery is on that exclusive list. “We call it a forever metal,” says Lisa, adding that there has been a shift in fashion from gold to platinum, as people, including many Hollywood stars, love the look of white metal. All their diamonds are “conflict free,” which means that each stone comes with its own provenance and is guaranteed not to have been obtained through the use of violence or human rights abuse. Anita and Allan Malbranck were among the first diamond dealers in the world to be invited to the ultra-secure Ekati mine in Canada’s Arctic. Diamonds are the ultimate symbols of romance, and have always been surrounded by legends and myth. Ancient Greeks believed that diamonds were splinters of stars fallen to the earth or tears of the Gods. The Diamond Gallery shares their customers’ passion for acquiring

exceptional jewellery as the perfect symbol of their love together. The Malbrancks’ personal attention to what a diamond signifies simplifies the complexity of purchasing the perfect gem. Most importantly, their focus on refined style will ensure that their signature designs create a personal symbol of their clients’ love for one another. Along with design work, Allan is a certified appraisal professional, one of two in Winnipeg to offer this level of ethics, accuracy in grading diamonds and gemology knowledge. “It’s very important for us to pass on our knowledge to our customers,” says Lisa, adding that they have seen a number of clients who have purchased jewellery from the Internet, and were subsequently surprised by the lack of quality. “When you come to Diamond Gallery, you are always dealing with an owner. We’re old-fashioned in that sense. We want our clients to feel comfortable and welcomed here, and we provide service to reflect that.” To view beautiful designs by Allan and Lisa Malbranck, visit the company’s website at www.diamondgallery.com or visit the Diamond Gallery’s new store.

Various Artists Slaves to the Rhythm – A Concert for The Prince’s Trust (MVD Visual DVD) By 1984, record producer Trevor Horn was associated with an expensive, high-gloss sound (“superhuman,” in the words of one of his clients) that drew heavily from his fascination with the new technology of sampling computers and drum machines. Records by ABC, The Art of Noise and Frankie Goes to Hollywood reached higher and higher, in a Technicolor riposte to the grey demeanour of punk. For Horn’s 25th anniversary celebration in 2004 he invited those bands and others to play a concert at London’s Wembley Arena to benefit The Prince’s Trust. An ace house band, orchestra and singers supplant the old machines, but the results still sound fantastic. On-form turns by ABC (heartfelt and glorious), Pet Shop Boys (charming) and Seal (suave and winning) balance such curios as the formerly studio-based Art of Noise and the muchmissed German band, Propaganda. The biggest thrill comes from Frankie, energized by new singer Ryan Molloy and the band’s ageless cheerleader, Paul Rutherford, and harder than ever. Yusuf Roadsinger (Eder/Universal) Universal has begun issuing the key Cat Stevens albums from the early ‘70s as expanded double-disc sets. The artist known now as Yusuf has changed in many well-documented ways since then, and for all his reassurances he finds dire evidence of “a world filled with fright,” but if a copy of his latest was slipped inside one of those deluxe packages it would be easy to overlook those years. His voice remains warm and strong in that almost avuncular way, and the elegantly varied instrumentation (dark, ominous horns on “Everytime I Dream,” keen electric guitar on “Welcome Home,” curling guitars and understated synthesizer on “World O’ Darkness”) is a reminder of the sophisticated, small-group arrangements that distinguished his earlier music. At 31 minutes this ends too soon, but it’s good to have him back. Arve Henriksen Cartography (ECM/Universal)

Norwegian trumpeter Arve Henriksen’s use of electronic extensions, digital manipulation and breath control create a vocalized sound that invites immediate (though favourable) comparisons to Jon Hassell. While both musicians are keen on finding shapes in the shadows, Henriksen is more the restrained romantic; seemingly diaphanous musings reveal armatures of melody in a blue mist, with adroit deployment of sampled choral voices and genuine bass and percussion adding warmth to the otherworldliness (most beautifully in “Recording Angel,” where singing and a slow bass line light Henriksen’s prowl). Two spoken passages from David Sylvian (who doesn’t sing on the session) are likeably leathery, and support the feeling that Henriksen yearns to connect with listeners through the soul.

Bookshelf Broken Wing, Fallen Sky by Fran Muir (Turnstone Press) Manitoba-born, Vancouver-based Fran Muir has written an extraordinarily powerful memoir of her elderly mother’s encounters with the BC healthcare system. It’s a harrowing tale of medical insensitivity as Muir determines that the system is more concerned with managing patients than in providing care. Muir and her mother deal with uncaring staff, recalcitrant bureaucracy, and massive amounts of pharmaceuticals. The author tempers her tale with recollections of her mother, a reticent, fiercely independent woman who lived alone for most of her life. In an attempt to delve into her mother’s past, Muir travels across Canada and to Scotland, as she worries about leaving her mother alone. A superb story of angry indignation, graced with beautiful, poetic writing. Pale Blue Hope: Death and Life in Asian Peacekeeping by Ronald Poulton (Turnstone Press) After a stint as a UN human rights investigator in Cambodia, Ronald Poulton returned home to Canada for a few years. Then he accepted a position as legal advisor to UN peacekeeping in Tajikistan, discovering extortion and paranoia in a post-Soviet dictatorship in Central Asia. When a multi-national peacekeeping team are found murdered, it’s up to Poulton to ensure that the accused get a fair trial. Dushanbe, the Tajik capital, is a fear-filled city of people living as prisoners in their apartments behind steel doors. It’s a place where peasants from the mountains encounter the post-Soviet bourgeoisie as Poulton tries to tackle a frustratingly corrupt judicial system. An important story about the overlooked corners and forgotten people of our planet.

Buttercream: A Year in a Montreal Pastry School by Denise Roig (Signature Editions) Montreal’s Denise Roig spent 30 years as a fiction writer and journalist, and she enjoyed her work, but her great passion is baking. So she enrolled fulltime in a French pastry school, eight hour days of rolling dough and melting chocolate. She and her classmates, all women except for one man, learn about Viennois Cheesecake, the different kinds of buttercream, and the organization required to bake 700 pies. It’s hard work, as she explains to scoffing friends who claim to love baking as they open a tin of Duncan Hines. This tasty memoir asks the questions: how long will she be able to fit in her cook’s uniform? How can she live with a husband who doesn’t like pastry? And will she ever be able to whip up some pate a choux? It’s all great fun. Plus, bonus recipes!

Smart Technology for a Smart World They have been around for over 23 years and are considered one of Winnipeg’s best-kept secrets in the competitive technology sector. Constant C Technology Group has weathered the numerous changes and challenges presented by an ever-changing industry by making service and customer relationships the primary building blocks of a successful company. Alan Castell, Sales and Marketing Manager for Constant C, says the company focuses on three main areas of business. “My job is to help my clients save money without them making any sacrifices.” To illustrate, Castell points to a company phone bill where one line summarizes the monthly charges. “Almost every company I visit is in the same situation,” he says. “They’ve been paying the same amount for so long they don’t look at it as an area where they can save. Businesses don’t realize how much has changed since they first got their phones. It’s great to help customers cut their phone expenses and also upgrade their phone system to one that makes all facets of their business more efficient.” Castell opens up a spreadsheet he uses to show customers their savings. “The average savings for a medium sized business would be in excess of a thousand dollars a year, and this doesn’t factor in the value of the features we add,” he notes. As to those added features, I ask what this means, as I never considered my office phone could be used for much more than ingoing and outgoing calls, and taking messages. “Out of the office I can check messages

40 | STYLE MANITOBA | autumn 2009

by calling in. In the office I deal with my messages in the same way you deal with email. I can listen to them in any order, forward them by dragging and dropping the message, even send the voice message in email. The training time is measured in minutes.” I watch as he transfers calls by “dropping” the call onto a staff member’s name. While he is on a call, another comes in and he can see who it is, and even take that call without losing the first one. If the parties are related, he can join the two calls into one conference - all merely by using his mouse. “It’s that simple,” he smiles. “We show you how to use your system, not memorize commands. If you have people changing positions, even offices, we’ll show you how to make the phone system changes yourself. Why should learning to do simple things on your own equipment cost a few hundred dollars each time you want to make a change? We’re going to help you save time and money.” One of the last features Castell shows me is one that I could see every company using recording. This system can be set up for recording the call you are on, all the calls you make, or all the calls across the whole company. “At first, you don’t really see how powerful that can be. But then you think about customer service calls, and how both the good ones and bad ones could be useful for training,” he explains. So if Constant C focuses on three different areas, what are the other two? “One area that has really grown in our company over the last few years is the larger data storage equipment manufactured by Quantum.

There are huge strides in that area using compression and replication, which make backups more efficient and cost effective. Our company was responsible for the first large-scale implementation of this new technology called “Data De-Duplication” or “De-Dupe” in Canada. This is equipment banks and life insurance companies would be interested in,” notes Castell. “The third area, probably the backbone of the company, is our I.T. service. We are the entire I.T. department for some companies, or we support their existing department when they need a hand. Especially with the economic situation we have all faced, I believe companies are looking for ways to save and to increase coverage. Whether you are a one person I.T. shop or fully staffed, there is a good chance we can do it externally for less.” Castell explains the advantages of having Constant C do your I.T. work. “There are limitations and potential problems when you have everything invested in one or two people. It becomes difficult to get rid of someone when they have all your passwords and documentation. In some cases the only records of that information is in their head. It can also become a problem when they get sick, as you don’t have anyone to take over.” Throughout the interview, it was obvious I was speaking to a man who loves his job. It was also apparent that Alan was comfortable with technology, while at the same time very competent at explaining it to people who aren’t. That skill in itself is a rarity, something that would make any company feel better about putting themselves in Constant C’s hands.

Interview with novelist Christina Sunley Christina Sunley grew up hearing about the lives of her Icelandic grandparents. In the 19th century, with thousands of others, they emigrated from the old country to a new life in the New World. It’s a long way from the San Francisco Bay area where Sunley now lives to the glaciers of a small island in the North Atlantic and to a town on the shore of Lake Winnipeg, but Iceland and Gimli inspired the teacher and writer to journey to faraway places and even more distant family secrets. The Tricking of Freya (St. Martin’s Press), Sunley’s debut novel, tells the story of Freya Morris, a photography assistant in Manhattan who spends her working life in a darkroom. As a child, Freya spent her summers in Manitoba in the company of her widowed mother, her wise grandmother and her eccentric, brilliant Aunt Birdie. The women are descendants of a famous poet, and Birdie in particular is intensely, fiercely proud of her Nordic heritage. She takes Freya under her wing but sets off a chain of events that ends up in a shocking scandal. Now, as an adult, Freya turns her back on all things Icelandic, living a solitary life, her mother and Aunt long gone. When Freya finally returns to Gimli to visit her dying grandmother for the last time, she receives a cryptic message. Sunley has written a novel about the mysteries that families guard, and about a littleknown people and culture - at least in the United States - though certainly familiar to Manitobans. “I think I’m one of the few Icelandic-American writers,” Sunley says. “And that’s who I was writing for, Americans.” Sunley says that her interest in her Icelandic heritage came from her interest in her grandfather, a fascinating, accomplished individual. “He was born in 1868,” she says. “He came over as a six year-old. His family was one of the first settlers in New Iceland and he was the first Icelandic doctor in Canada.” Sunley researched for several years and visited both Gimli and Iceland, reading up on mythology, history, and genealogy. It seems every Icelander can trace his or her family tree and every family has at least one member who keeps the genealogical records.

“I really lived in that world for eight years,” she says, adding that now she has her own blue genealogy book, bringing it out to show it off to Style Manitoba. Iceland is a small country, in area and population. On one of her trips to the island, she spent some time at a remote stone farmhouse, located near where her grandfather’s family had their home.

Looking for a new office phone system? Vertical WAVE. A phone system that saves YOU money. IT’S A SMART WORLD. BE SMARTER.

“I’ve always been drawn to extreme landscapes so I loved it,” she says of the island. “Ninety percent is uninhabitable. It’s glacier or wetland. You hear that Iceland is a land of fire and ice and it’s true. But the rest of Iceland is emerald green, just like Ireland. And you see glaciers creeping up on the green.” It was a difficult life in the Old Country, but the settlers endured hardship in New Iceland as well: Gimli and Hekla hardly seemed the promised heaven and paradise. Still, Sunley was amazed at the resentment directed at the emigrants by the descendants of those who stayed behind on the island. “‘What’s there to celebrate about them? They deserted their own country,’” Sunley would sometimes hear in conversation with someone in Iceland. “And that was in 1998!” Freya tries to piece together the puzzle of her family, remembering the past and exploring the present. Forced to confront the events of her childhood, investigating her heritage and family, Freya discovers not only the myths and legends of her people, but long-buried family enigmas. Iceland is a magical place. Family secrets provided Sunley with inspiration for all sorts of reasons. “I like a good story and mystery provides a story,” Sunley says. “Many of the people I talked to are of the opinion that Icelanders keep more secrets than other people. I think secrets affect our lives,” she adds. “People don’t think about things but it affects them. That was true in Freya’s life and mine as well. All my family secrets came up in Iceland,” she says, smiling.

The key to a longer, healthier life

Immunocal® helps to maintain the body’s natural defenses against disease, environmental challenges and the signs of aging. But don’t just take our word for it…

Glutathione is of major significance in cellular antioxidant activity, and that Immunocal functioning as a delivery system can enhance glutathione synthesis…

Dr. Luc Montagnier, winner of the 2008 Nobel Prize in Medicine for his discovery of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) with Françoise Barré-Sinoussi in 1983.

Until recently, the medical world has focused on treating the symptoms of illness with surgery and prescription drugs. Immunotec Inc. has turned this type of thinking upside down, knowing the key to a longer, healthier life is giving the body what it needs to function at an optimal level. Canadian researchers have patented a way to deliver glutathione to the body in the form of a natural milk protein supplement called Immunocal, which is an immune system booster proven in clinical trials and real life use for over 12 years. Immunocal is approved by Health Canada to claim that it is “a natural source of the glutathione precursor cysteine for the maintenance of a strong immune system.”

Q: What is Immunocal? A: Immunocal is a patented nutritional supplement that is over 90 percent pure protein and has a biological value higher than any other protein supplement or food available. The term “biological value” (BV) is a ranking of important edible proteins in your body. Taken daily, Immunocal will raise your body’s concentration of glutathione, a molecule referred to as “your body’s most important protector.”

Q: How does Immunocal affect the immune system? A: Immunocal supports and maintains a healthy immune system by providing building blocks our body needs to produce glutathione, which acts as a powerful antioxidant, a key protector against all types of pollution and which is effective in helping to prevent the signs of aging.

Q: Who are the scientists behind Immunocal? A: Dr. Gustavo Bounous pioneered the use of denatured milk concentrate that helps to sustain glutathione levels, and ultimately, a strong immune system. Dr. Bounous developed the method for the production of undenatured whey protein.

Many studies of my laboratory at the German Cancer Research Center support the conclusion that Immunocal® is effective in maintaining a strong immune system…

Dr. Wulf Dröge was the first to describe the effect of glutathione on the immune response of a living organism (1986) and to discover the abnormally low cysteine and glutathione levels in HIV patients (1988/1989).

Dr. Wulf Dröge, world renowned research scientist and Senior Vice-President, Research & Development, Immunotec Inc., also internationally known in the field of redox physiology and aging research.

Q: Who should take Immunocal?

Dr. Patricia Kongshavn, the principal collaborator in this research program, worked as a professor of physiology and immunology at McGill University in the Department of Medicine.

A: Everyone, including pregnant women and seniors.

Q: Can a person who is lactose-intolerant take Immunocal? A: Yes, since each pouch of Immunocal contains less than one percent lactose, it is usually well tolerated in people who are lactose-intolerant.

Q: Is there anyone who should not take Immunocal? A: People with allergies to milk protein or organ transplant patients receiving immuno-suppressant therapy should not take Immunocal.

Q: What other products has Immunotec Inc. produced?

For more information on how you can experience optimal health with a strong immune system, call 1-877-267-2954 or 1-204-453-1166 today!

A: Immunocal Platinum® is a cutting-edge product that contains specific molecules of Cytokine Modulating Proteins, which assist the body in regular cellular growth, work with the body to repair damaged cells, and inhibit the growth of disease causing microorganisms. Immunocal Platinum also slows the loss of calcium and improves the body’s metabolism of insulin. Immunocal Platinum contains the same glutathione-enhancing ingredients as Immunocal, but is designed specifically for baby boomers.

Q: Where can I learn more? Where can I obtain Immunocal for myself? A: Online at www.immunocal.com. Immunocal is sold through a network of independent consultants.

The Power of Negative Emotions: Tips from Dr. Darek Dawda By Mathilda Waters

Nobody likes feeling negative emotions. But, according to expert psychologist Dr. Dawda of DAVDA Psychology, we should not only deal with negative emotions but also cherish them. DD: Negative emotions are, first of all, informative reactions you experience in response to situations, circumstances, and people. They are useful because often you will feel a negative emotional reaction before you consciously realize that something is not quite right. It is best to take advantage of this built-in capacity to judge what is and what isn’t good for you, and listen to your negative emotions, learn from the signals they are providing, and take steps to correct the situations that trigger those emotions.

MW: How about sadness? DD: Sadness is a natural feeling in response to a loss. You experience losses all the time, big or small, and so you are bound to feel a great deal of sadness during your lifetime. A loss sets in motion a grieving process, small or big, and you need to allow this process to happen. If you don’t, you will accumulate unresolved grief that may eventually result in depression. Not to mention that life without sadness is an empty life.

MW: If negative feelings are so useful, why don’t we listen to them? MW: Won’t you get depressed if you feel the sadness? DD: Many people can’t handle the pain that emotions cause, and so they put great effort into escaping, avoiding, or suppressing the feelings. This is a good short-term strategy that can bring some relief, but in the long-term, avoidance can lead to significant emotional problems. Some people are also busy judging their emotions, blaming themselves for how they are feeling, beating themselves up. This is never a useful strategy. MW: Why then do we judge our feelings? DD: You judge your emotions because others have judged your emotions. You internalize messages you hear, such as ‘Oh, don’t be such a wuss,’ ‘No need to feel sad,’ ‘Stop being so angry.’ Others judge your negative feelings because those emotions stir similar feelings in them. And since they don’t feel comfortable with their own negative feelings, they don’t want to be disturbed by yours. Plus, there is also a cultural component here. North American culture is saturated with the ideology of positive thinking, of optimism, and this can be oppressive at times. We all are supposed to feel cheerful all the time, and if we aren’t, there must be something wrong with us. Just look at the images on any magazine rack. MW: OK, let’s be more specific. How do you handle anger? DD: OK, so you feel angry. Sure anger is a problem for some people. Some people feel angry most of the time, as their anger is rooted in unresolved resentments stemming from past hurts. But most often, you will be angry because the situation you are in is unjust, because someone is disrespecting you, because someone is using you. If this is the case, it is not useful to stuff your anger up and allow the situation to continue. You will be better off to respect your anger. Use it as a sign that something needs to change. Maybe even use some of its energy to get empowered for positive action. If you stuff up your anger, you will grow resentments and you may grow into one of those angry people yourself, which is a sure path to relationship difficulties.

DD: It’s the opposite. You are more likely to get depressed if you avoid sadness. First of all, sadness is not depression. Sadness, if you allow yourself to feel it, if you are not scared of it, is a fine emotion that doesn’t really feel so bad. Plus there is usually a relief that accompanies the allowance of sadness. Depression is something else. Depression is a depletion of energy that happens when you get emotionally exhausted, often by inner conflicts. For example, when you feel sad but, at the same time, you don’t want to feel sad, you create an inner fight - you’re fighting yourself. And this burns energy, deprives you of deep rest, puts your body in a state of overdrive, and may lead to depression. MW: What if the emotions are overwhelming? DD: It’s impossible to give comprehensive coverage to this topic in such a short discussion. But there are techniques that will help you settle in and become more comfortable with the complexity of your inner life. Psychotherapy is usually quite effective in this respect, and not only for people with anxiety, but also for people with depression and post-traumatic stress. An open chat with a close friend might also help, providing that such a friend is strong or smart enough to handle your emotions. Whatever you do, don’t stay suffering in your shell. It is worth trying to find someone who can guide you onto a path to yourself. * Visit www.davda.ca for free Sleep Quiz with Sleep Tips or more information on Dr. Darek Dawda of DAVDA Psychology. The nice thing about using human hair extensions instead of synthetic is that they can be reused, plus you can use any thermal styling tool to create the finished style without damaging the hair. If you’re looking for something special for a night out or a wedding, book a consultation and bring in a picture of the hairstyle and makeup look you’re interested in. That always gives the stylist some direction, plus a visual helps narrow down what is actually possible and what will suit you. To achieve these looks, investing in some human hair extensions, hot tools such as a set of hot rollers, double barrelled curling iron, single pronged curling iron with pointed tip or a really good flat iron, can really make the difference in the end result. The right products for setting and finishing are also important – they will give the style foundation as well as hold for the evening. The Grand Weekend, Montreal Style

By Greg Klassen

Most of us can’t afford to jet off to Europe on a whim but savvy Canadian travelers know that the best way to catch a European vibe without suffering the requisite eight hour flight is to head to Montreal. This spring, after hearing that one of my favourite African bands would be playing there, I planned a June long-weekend excursion that would hopefully usher in a summer of fun. I’d been to Montreal several times before, but never in the summer and was eager to experience Canada’s most cosmopolitan city in full motion. Our party of four booked two charming rooms at the Hotel Nelligan – a boutique hotel in the heart of the old city named for Quebecois poet Émile Nelligan, whose poetry is excerpted throughout the building. Outside the main doors, narrow cobblestone streets carry us in every direction to a fabulous selection of cafes, art galleries and boutiques. You could be excused for feeling slightly Parisian here. Our first few hours were spent enjoying lunch at Nelligan’s rooftop restaurant. Engulfed by the panorama of Old Montreal, we ate fresh vegetable sandwiches complemented with glasses of our favourite beverages. When the sun shines in Montreal, life is good. After a nap and a leisurely walk down rue St. Paul, we hailed a taxi and headed to our dinner reservation at La Sala Rossa, a Spanish restaurant at the rather austere Spanish Cultural Institute. The tapas was typically Spanish – calamari, fried potatoes, chorizo

and garlic shrimp – each new plate a spicy enhancement to the evening. On Thursday nights, starting at 8:45 pm, the stage comes alive with flamenco and we were lucky enough to have a table right next to the action. Our group shared sangria and robust red wine while a feisty dancer performed an aggressive flamenco, seducing the mostly student audience. We marvelled at the passion, the speed of her arms and the intricate choreography. The next day, we woke up with no agenda. After sampling the continental breakfast at the hotel, we tackled the main physical challenge of our weekend - shopping. I love shopping in a city where men’s clothing is as adventurous as the women’s (Montreal men wear scarves or colourful shirts with élan). Rue St. Denis, starting at the 3800 block, is a great place to start the fun. St. Denis is a recognized tourist district (alternately referred to as Le Plateau) offering a great mix of funky clothing stores alongside shops that offer beautiful linen and household items, vinyl records, comic book collectibles and crafts from Tunisia and Morocco.

is a joy to experience. There are also many wonderful dining and drinking establishments in Le Plateau. Our favourite cafe, L’Express,

Revenge is my must-visit here – an independent clothing store (men’s and women’s) that carries a variety of Quebecois designers and

is a Paris bistro experience so popular and well known, the restaurant doesn’t even have a sign. Recipe for lunchtime happiness equals a croque monsieur washed down with a mimosa or Bellini. Later, we walked a few blocks from our hotel to explore the harbourside area of Old Montreal, affectionately known as The Old Port or Les Quais du Vieux‑Port. It becomes immediately evident that this is a great public mingling place in the summer, perfect for families. There are bike trails, restaurants, museums, recreation areas (with paddle boats) and plenty of waterside shops. People are picnicking on the grass, visiting the Montreal Science Centre or simply staring out at the big freighters and cruise liners as they hold sway majestically in the harbour. Brightly coloured circus tents draw us to one particular quay, the summer home to Cirque du Soleil and its production of Ovo. Walking back towards Old Montreal, we spend a few quiet minutes in the Notre-Dame-deBon-Secours Chapel - the Sailor’s Church. It’s one of the oldest churches in Montreal, just north of the Bonsecours Market, and is reportedly where sailors stopped in before they set off on their sea voyages. The church is always an oasis of calm and the delightful ship models hanging from the ceiling invite contemplation of a long-gone maritime culture that once predominated here. The chapel is also home to the Marguerite Bourgeoys Museum. That night, we attended one of the shows designed to pave the way for the mid-summer jazz festival. The African husband and wife duo, Amadou and Mariam, were playing Montreal’s premiere nightclub, the Metropolis on Ste. Catherine (it’s true - even people over 40 like cool, dancy African music, especially when it’s served up in an ultra cool club where you can sit and actually see the band).

After the concert, we sauntered past a fetish club, bustling Chinatown eateries and finally the sedate brick buildings of Old Montreal. Approaching the Notre Dame Cathedral, we lingered a bit to enjoy its light show (And Then There Was Light) and the clickity-clack of carriage-horse hooves from the many caleches standing in wait of their next fare. We decided to spend our final afternoon at the Montreal Botanical Garden in Maisonneuve Park, facing Montreal’s Olympic Stadium. In spite of the cool temperature that day, the beauty of this place captivated us. It houses 10 exhibition greenhouses, the Chinese gardens, Japanese gardens and the Insectarium - a must-see for tourists with children or those who just enjoy learning about the many insects which populate our planet. Finally, the time came to check out of our wonderful hotel and catch the flight back to Winnipeg. The memory of our early summer Montreal getaway lingers on - I suggest it is ultimately the spirit and history of this wonderful Canadian metropolis that makes any visit there a complete, soul-satisfying adventure.

Low maintenance, high style By Leigh Patterson The current trend to low maintenance yards doesn’t mean the “wow factor” has to be lost in the process. Case in point: this distinctive backyard oasis created by Jason Woznesensky, owner of Bedrock Custom Landscaping Ltd., for a Maric-built home in Pritchard Farm Southlands.

Consistent with the low maintenance theme and in harmony with the home’s façade, in the front yard Woznesensky used low, curved stone retaining walls, perennial shrubs and large earth toned boulders that were strategically placed to add visual interest and curb appeal.

The property slopes to a meandering creek, while a public path runs along the back perimeter of the yard. Woznesensky’s challenge was to allow for plenty of viewpoints from which to enjoy the natural surroundings, while providing private areas where the homeowners could relax and entertain.

The end result? An easy-care yard that’s high on style.

Woznesensky used a series of undulating retaining walls to add a sense of flow to the yard and to transition from one elevation to the next. A wide pathway of rectangular “Dynasty” slate stones by Barkman Concrete provides additional seating areas, and offers “a clean, contemporary and rich look and feel,” Woznesensky says. The path ultimately leads to a cozy sunken patio area featuring a stone fireplace. Trees, shrubs, flowering perennials and grassed areas add texture and colour, while balancing the hardscaping.

A large set of stairs leading from the garage and along the side of the house is flanked on one side by a retaining wall topped by a wrought iron fence from Bestway Fence Systems. The staircase serves as another path to the backyard and as a convenient dog run area for the family’s two dogs. To soften the look of the staircase, Woznesensky incorporated ornamental “Pink Spire” trees on the rise of each step, added pockets of perennials and planted vines that cascade over the retaining wall and climb the iron fence.

Surrounded by Natural Beauty Bridgwater Forest — Winnipeg’s newest neighbourhood located in Waverley West in southwest Winnipeg — invites you to live the life you’ve always wanted.

the former site of the Bridgwater Park police shooting range.

With over 85 acres of open space, mature forest and lakes, your new home will be surrounded by natural beauty, with kilometres of sidewalks and scenic pedestrian paths inviting residents to walk, cycle or enjoy nature all year round.

“One-third of this 330-acre development is preserved as natural open space, with 25 full acres dedicated to mature forest,” says Dwayne Rewniak, director of land development with Manitoba Housing. “That amount of forest is rare for a new development. When you’re on the walking paths, it feels like walking through Assiniboine Forest or Birds Hill Park,” he adds.

Bridgwater Forest is named in honour of Arthur Bridgwater, who served as chief of the then Fort Garry Police Department from 1945 to 1974. Not only does the name honour Mr. Bridgwater’s many years of dedicated public service, it also commemorates local history as

Upon completion, there will be 1,000 singlefamily homes and 500 units in multi-family dwellings. The province owns the land, and expects to develop it in three phases, with phase one divided into an A, B and C phase, of which 1A and 1B are currently in development.

“There are 459 single family lots in phase 1A, out of which we have sold 60 percent,” says Rewniak. “Phases 1B and 1C will have 273 lots, out of which we’ve sold around 100 lots. At this point in time, there are 150 started or completed homes, and 75 families have moved into the neighbourhood. Bridgwater Forest is number one in the city for building permits taken out between January to June.” A great deal of careful and advanced planning has gone into Bridgwater Forest. Public consultations, forward thinking and the oversight of one of the country’s most well-respected architects — Smith Carter — means Bridgwater Forest homeowners can combine the latest technologies with the best of traditional neighbourhood features. The neighbourhood is located within five minutes of schools, houses of worship, community centres, shopping, transportation routes and public transit. “Bridgwater Forest is designed to be Transitfriendly. Everything will be within walking distance of a bus stop,” notes Rewniak. “And there will be 20 kilometres of sidewalk, which will invite residents to walk and bike. Vehicular traffic will be carefully controlled, with strategically placed roundabouts, which slow it down, yet allow drivers to quickly get to where they want to go.” Bridgwater Forest has been developed with a variety of lots, including some with back lanes. The streets have been oriented to turn Manitoba’s abundant sunny skies into solar energy and provisions have been made so homeowners interested in taking advantage of geothermal heating and cooling may do so. This technology works by tapping into natural

“There are 16 homebuilders working in the neighbourhood, following the architectural guidelines set out by Smith Carter. We want to see a variety of styles, from Arts & Craft to Victorian, Cape Cod, Georgian Revival and Country designs. The average square footage should be in the 1,900 to 2,100 range. You can see more of the requirements on the website at www.bridgwaterforest.com.” Fifty-four of the lots are designated as geothermal, with an eye to allowing homebuilders to install shallow loop geothermal systems for their homes. There is a geothermal showhome built by KDR Design Builders, and there will be a second geothermal showhome ready on Prominence Point in time for the Fall Parade of Homes. “Manitoba Hydro has given an easement along Bishop Grandin Boulevard in phase 1C of this neighbourhood to allow geothermal systems. There are some of the larger pie-shaped lots included in this plan,” says Rewniak. Bridgwater Forest has been selected to open the 2009 Fall Parade of Homes. The neighbourhood had 18 showhomes built for the 2008 Parade, and there are 16 new ones opening in time for this fall’s Parade, located on Bridlewood Road, Eddington Point and Bridgeland Dr. North. These will include four homes built on lots with back lanes and the new geothermal showhome, says Rewniak. One of Waverley West’s most distinctive features will be the Town Centre, located just west of Bridgwater Forest, which is expected to be completed in the next three to four years. Reminiscent of small communities and towns of the past, the Town Centre will be best suited for pedestrians wishing to enjoy a stroll to the nearby shops and services. Bridgwater Forest is nestled in mature forests, yet close to all contemporary conveniences. With striking architectural details, energy efficient solutions and a traditional neighbourhood feel, Bridgwater Forest is the neighbourhood for discerning new homebuilders and buyers. Flexibility & Quality

Winnipeg-based Master Builder Hilton Homes has put a lot of time and thought into their floor plans to build some of the city’s most beautiful homes. It is immediately obvious from the second you walk into any Hilton Home. Every room has an airy open feeling, yet each has its own well-defined space and personality. The secret is in the smartly designed and flexible floor plan and the host of small details that give each room a distinct look. There are unusual touches that keep the eye interested, yet not overwhelmed. Features as simple as a pair of diamond shaped windows in the living room, with the diamond shape echoed in the peaked archway in the ceiling above it help to create a subtle sense of separation for the room, yet it is connected to the rest of the home through the open floor plan. The floor plans for Hilton Homes wide choice of designs are the result of a quarter century of experience in offering Winnipeggers the type of homes that can readily adapt to a variety of family sizes and lifestyles.

The company motto “Designed and built for your family” is much more than an idle boast. Hilton Homes offers a variety of bungalows, bi-level cab-overs and two storey homes with enough variety in floor plans to suit any prospective new homebuyer. The company appeals to a wide demographic range, from singles to couples without children, from young families just starting out to larger and extended families, and even older couples looking to downsize after the children have all left home. Many designs feature large basements with plenty of natural light that readily lend to future development. As family needs change, the basement can easily become a rec room or extra bedrooms can be developed.

What may not be so obvious, but are just as important to the hundreds of Winnipeggers who have chosen a Hilton Home since the company was established in 1985, are the things that you don’t see. Hilton Homes is one of Winnipeg’s most respected builders, with a solid reputation that is built on the importance of value, attention to detail, impeccable workmanship and top quality materials. These are homes that exceed buyers’ expectations in all areas. Visit their website at www.hiltonhomes.ca for a look at how your family can easily fit into one of the many floor plans they offer.

Huntington Homes

was founded 22 years ago by brothers Sheldon and Rob Swan, with the mission to be the best custom homebuilder in Manitoba — a goal they have carefully held in their sights ever since. “We are a fussy and detail-oriented company that strives for perfection,” says Rob Swan. “Our customers have high expectations of us and we ensure that it’s a smooth and enjoyable experience through construction and beyond. Everyone working with us is a testament to that drive for perfection.” Each Huntington-built home offers a combination of superior design, quality materials, and expert construction, where every detail is carefully crafted and every enhancement the client makes is seamlessly added to create a home that is unique to them. The company’s ultimate goal is for its clients to move into the home of their dreams, built to the highest standards. The firm builds between 18 and 22 custom homes per year and has a well-deserved reputation for quality and customer satisfaction.

“Anyone looking to build a home in the $350,000-plus range should explore their vision with us and see the Huntington Homes difference,” says Swan. “We know that people want to build a new home, and not have to manage it like they’re the builder. They want to come out once or twice a week, take some photos, and have great memories of the process. That is our goal as well.” The Swans have developed a set of design and building specifications that puts them in a league of their own. “People walk into our homes and say that they feel different, more solid, very well built,” notes Swan. “That comes from working very closely with our trades to use the best materials and to put them together to ensure top performance.” The suppliers and craftspeople that work for Huntington Homes have typically been with the company for a long time - in some cases, all 22 years. They are involved with every project.

A League of Their Own

Their detailed planning process allows Huntington Homes to control construction costs. As the design process is very exact, a home with 841 square feet of hardwood flooring, for example, can be nailed right down to the penny. No surprises, no compromises! Coming for the Fall 2009 Parade of Homes is a new Huntington Homes’ showhome at 87 Autumnview Drive in South Pointe, Waverley West. This showpiece features some newer ideas for kitchen / dining areas, a spacious great room, master quarters that will not disappoint and a walkout basement looking out over the park area. The latest trends in new home design and features are just some of the reasons that you won’t want to miss viewing this home. For more information on Huntington Homes, visit the company website at www.huntingtonhomes.com

Huntington Homes’ in-house design department uses state-of-the-art 3-dimensional CAD technology. This enables prospective clients to view hundreds of finished homes and floor plans on a large-screen computer. Not only does the homebuyer see their highly detailed home plan on-screen, but also how their furniture fits. “For example, if you have a 12-seat dining room table that’s a family heirloom, and comes with a sideboard and cabinet, you’ll be able to see it right on the plans. There won’t be any doubt in your mind about it fitting into the room properly,” explains Swan. autumn 2009 | STYLE MANITOBA | 71

Southwestern Gem South Pointe in Waverley West — a new neighbourhood located between Waverley Street and the future extension of Kenaston Boulevard — is designed to meet the demands of new home buyers seeking lots in the highly sought after southwest corner of Winnipeg. The first phase will see 1,200 homes built as demand calls for them, says David Borger, vice-president of land development with Ladco Company Ltd. “Phase one has service into 260 lots, out of which we have already sold 150 lots. It’s something we’re very pleased about. Approximately 60 homes are already under construction,” says Borger. “This neighbourhood has only been available for the past nine months, so we’re quite pleased with how it’s developing.”

Historically, the southwest quadrant of Winnipeg sees approximately 35 percent of all home sales. There has been pent-up demand for new home lots, as previous developments such as Lindenwoods and Whyte Ridge have already reached completion. South Pointe in Waverley West is ready to fulfill the dreams of those looking to build in this area of Winnipeg. “It will be a lovely neighbourhood,” says Borger. “The lakes form the backbone of the community, and the round water features are like prairie potholes, complete with rushes that purify runoff water. We used this feature in Royalwood, and have improved on the design.” South Pointe will have an entrance feature never before seen in Winnipeg, as Ladco is constructing a unique stone entryway to the community. There will be five kilometres of

trails for recreation along with a large green space for sports, plus two areas for commercial development, multi-family complexes and a potential school site, which is subject to provincial approval. The subdivision is designed for Transit bus access. “South Pointe is quite close to the University of Manitoba, and the Victoria General Hospital. The nearby schools are Richmond West, Acadia, Ryerson and Fort Richmond Collegiate,” says Borger. “People can shop either on Pembina Highway or Kenaston Boulevard. We feel the neighbourhood has all the amenities people are seeking, and we welcome people to drive out and see the area.” For more information on South Pointe, please see www.ladco.mb.ca/SouthPointe/southpointe. htm.

There are 12 homebuilders working in South Pointe, including A & S Homes, Gino’s Construction, Greentree Homes, Hallmark Homes, Hilton Homes, Huntington Homes, Maric Construction, Qualico Homes, Parkhill Homes, Randall Homes, Signature Homes and Ventura Homes. “They are constructing 17 showhomes for the Fall Parade of Homes,” says Ken Oblik, the manager of land development with Ladco Company Ltd. “These are located on John Angus Drive and Autumnview.”

There’s a word that inevitably forms on people’s lips when they enter a Maric Home “Wow!” Time and again, the builder has proven that their motto is true - they “build to astonish.” This house is no exception. A curved ledgestone stairwell greets visitors at the entrance. The vertical application is striking. The rounded motif reappears in the kitchen, as well as on the great room fireplace, which is also clad in cultured stone. Floor to ceiling windows afford a spectacular view of the exterior, while allowing an abundance of natural light to flow into the spacious interior. The house was lapped up on the market so fast that consumers might not have had a chance to see it. All those who missed this masterpiece can visit a replica of the popular design starting September 5th when the HSC opens its latest lottery home on 67 Marine Drive. And of course, there is the Fall 2009 Parade of Homes in which Maric Homes will once again have some exciting new designs. At 71 Autumnview, a 2,190-square-foot bungalow with walkout lower level captures beautiful vistas of the green space beyond. The views on the inside are even more captivating. A brilliant stainless steel and glass hood fan over the island is complemented by a built-in wall pantry with chrome and glass doors at the centre. storage as well. In the lower level, the twotiered bar island grabs most of the attention but the exercise room and entertainment unit should not to be missed. Nor should any true style aficionado forego the two-storey Maric showhome at 127 Bridlewood. An exterior combination of James Hardie siding, cultured stone and exposed roof rafters creates an Arts and Crafts look with tremendous appeal. The contemporary interior is framed by two maple pillars in the entrance. In the kitchen, maple cabinets in a weathered slate stain continue the earth tone colour scheme along with a latte-hued CaesarStone island. On the second floor, a computer area with custom-designed shelving is a reminder that Maric Homes is always paying attention to the latest amenities and lifestyle needs. Some of the colours featured in these display homes are exclusive to Maric. Custom colours are accompanied by other mouthwatering tones, such as chocolate brown, cream and portabella, punctuated by brand new products exclusively sourced by the builder to create exciting apricot orange accents. It’s no wonder consumers continue to demonstrate an insatiable appetite for the unique brand of homebuilding that is Maric Homes. This fall is the time to indulge and satisfy that craving for truly delectable homes.

Building a Lifestyle Parkhill Homes believes that a custom built home is about much more than the materials. It’s about building to meet the needs of a lifestyle, one that is unique to every customer and family for whom they build a home. That philosophy is on display at the builder’s impressive 1,959 square-foot showhome at 95 East Oak in Royalwood. A mirrored rift oak wall with stainless steel inserts sets the tone right from the entrance, while slate pillars lead into the dining room with its floating rift oak shelves. River Ridge neighbourhood really has it all. This piece of prime real estate located in West Kildonan offers the beauty of the Red River within a complete community setting served by schools, the Red River Community Club, Rivergrove shopping centre, sports fields and river parks all connected by neighbourhood trails and pathways.

system from Kildonan Park northward. In fact, the trail network is one that allows residents of River Ridge the opportunity to cycle, walk or run through a myriad of interconnected pathways that course through the community, making it pedestrian friendly and safe. “Close at hand is the Rivergrove shopping centre east of Main Street north of Red River Blvd. Rivergrove includes first-rate food stores like Sobey’s, as well as convenience stores, professional services like dentists, hair salons, video outlets, restaurants and gas stations within easy access of River Ridge,” he says.

The popularity of River Ridge has seen buyers acquire properties and build homes on 117 lots, leaving just 21 lots remaining. These includewhile they last- 12 marvellous river lots starting at the very affordable price of $135,000 to $145,000, and 9 internal lots starting at $85,000 to $95,000.

“Infill neighbourhoods differ from ‘greenfieldstyle development’ in that projects like River Ridge connect new housing with existing community amenities such as schools, community clubs, sports fields, churches and shopping conveniences. This is really a very sustainable development approach. Its goal is to create a neighbourhood with a shared sense of community, where people have the opportunity to interact with one another. Combining new green spaces and neighbourhood streets with existing single-family housing areas, community facilities and parks provides the destinations where new residents can meet their neighbours and establish the ties that define and bind a community together,” he says. In addition to being a green community with over 25 percent of the land area set aside for parks, River Ridge also has great connectivity via Main Street to offices and places of work in Winnipeg’s downtown.

According to Lombard North’s project planner Dave Palubeski, River Ridge will complete

Indeed, the River Ridge development has allowed the continuance of the city’s river trail

Designed by planners and landscape architects of the Lombard North Group, River Ridge is an upscale infill neighbourhood located north of Chief Peguis Trail between Main Street and the Red River at Ridgecrest Avenue. The neighbourhood plan includes 138 single-family lots. By the fall of 2009, the final park landscape works will be completed, connecting the Red River trail with the entry plaza onto Rivergrove Drive at Ridgecrest Avenue.

As well, River Ridge is also the beneficiary of new school facilities with the recently completed West Kildonan Collegiate that adjoins the west boundary of the community. The new state-ofthe-art school offers much from a prospectus that includes a broad mix of academic, athletic and cultural facilities and programs. The school even houses a daycare and has sidewalk links with the Red River Community Club located on the west side of Main Street. “This is a community that delivers the best of all worlds - great connectivity with the city centre, yet close to the countryside and beach areas of cottage getaways. Care has been taken in the design to preserve valued riverbank forest and create stunning river views from the project’s main access streets Rivergrove Drive, Ridgecrest Avenue and River Ridge Drive. This means families can locate to River Ridge and enjoy all the attributes of a new home lifestyle without having to wait for developers to build in schools, shopping or recreation facilities. Its all here now,” explains Palubeski. He invites people to drive just north of Kildonan Park, turn right on Ridgecrest Ave and discover the advantages of new home living in a park-like setting by the Red River.

Harmonious Living Just south of the junction of Bishop Grandin and Lagimodieré sits one of Winnipeg’s most impressive new developments - Sage Creek. A Qualico Communities project, Sage Creek is impressive for its size, its fresh approach and its easy liveability that promises to keep it front and centre with a public yearning for a community that offers traditional qualities combined with out-of-thebox thinking. Indeed, when all is said and done, Sage Creek will comprise as many as 4000 families – a major new community in Winnipeg. However, says Eric Vogan, Land Development Manager, Qualico Communities, Sage Creek is still young. He reports that the third phase is now underway with the community approved for 600 lots, plus sites for multi-family, office and retail. Sage Creek will offer design elements that will engender a strong sense of neighbourhood through the focus of population density and variety of activities in the Village Centre, as well as an easily accessed network of pedestrian/cycle trails, and a linear open space/ wetland system that will offer lots of visual ‘breathing room.’

He suggests that an important component to the community is the intricate trail system that seeks to get people out of their cars and onto bicycles or into walking shoes. “We are really getting places with the trail system,” he says, noting that the walkways are beautiful undulating and curved paths that travel alongside the lakes and offer stunning natural views. “The trails are made in such a way as to make the journey to the Village Centre more interesting than an average walk along a city street. The trails are also designed to offer quick routes that are often faster to use than roadways and the car.” Vogan describes Sage Creek as a mixed community with empty nesters living alongside young and longer established families. There

will be single-detached residences as well as multi-family dwellings, and a full slate of commercial services such as grocery and drug stores, and other retail and service businesses. “The vision is now starting to really take hold in the community with a good variety of homes and condo projects,” Vogan says, adding that there are a number of custom homebuilders on site, such as Arlt Homes, Hearth Homes, Gino’s Homes, and Artista Homes, to name just a few of the companies. The condos by Randall Homes are worthy of special mention, offering convenience and stunning lake views in harmony with adjacent single-family homes. Look for Sage Creek to offer a minimum of 14 showhomes during the Fall Parade of Homes with presence in three villages along Ranville Road, Blue Sun Drive and Wood Sage Crescent.

Things will continue to unfold over the next few years. “There are 200 homes already up and over 180 families have moved into the community. Building a new home is never black and white. “It’s definitely more of an art than a science,” agrees Jason Arlt of Arlt Homes. He points out that nine out of ten people want to choose the features that go into their new home. The purpose of a showhome is to highlight what builders can do and to bring new ideas and concepts into the marketplace to prospective homeowners. This 2009 Arlt display home at 111 Blue Sun Drive in Sage Creek is a case in point. For the kitchen backsplash, the builder used a combination of glass tile, opaque tile and Carrera marble in a horizontal bar pattern. “A random rectangular bar pattern is becoming increasingly popular,” notes Arlt. Instead of the typical cultured stone, a coordinating quartzite tile in a vertical motif dresses the fireplace. He adds that the trend in colour is veering towards charcoals and greys such as the ones showcased in this house. Cool greys have evolved to incorporate other tones that can give greys a very warm feel in combination with other hues. Warm grey is perfect for lending this rustic floor a more modern look. “Many people don’t want a hardwood floor that looks perfectly smooth and uniform,” Arlt explains. “They’re looking not just for a modern style but also for

something that fits in with their contemporary lifestyle and functions for all members of the family.” Arlt Homes always begins the building process by determining a customer’s specific needs. At the same time, the builder recognizes it is difficult for most people to envision a layout that works without having a starting point. “Not every plan starts as a customized plan,” explains Arlt. The builder has a bank of six to eight popular designs to show the customer in order to start the process. Layouts and features evolve, as together, Arlt Homes and the prospective homeowner begin to modify a plan. Or sometimes, after seeing all the plans, clients will feel ready to begin designing their own custom plan from scratch.

In either case, showhomes play an important role as a springboard to the custom homebuilding process by bringing products, ideas and options to the fore. Arlt’s other Fall Parade of Homes entry at 2 Ashgrove Point in Bridgwater Forest will be among the first to feature Ecovneer cabinetry, in a natural bamboo look. The home will also feature four large bedrooms and a fully finished basement. With the growing prevalence of blended families and live-in grandparents, this functional layout should provide plenty of food for thought. For more homebuilding ideas, Arlt Homes invites consumers to visit their newly launched website at www.arlthomes.com or to visit one of their new showhomes.

Cutting Edge Design

Using the latest materials in leading edge designs, Artista Homes is building homes for the 21st century, with luxury that is as contemporary as the lifestyles people lead today. Take this two-storey home with the three-sided fireplace strategically positioned to be part of the foyer, great room and kitchen. Stainless steel capping clinches the contemporary style. So does the quartz of the countertops and island. The professionals at Artista recognize that the kitchen is the place to congregate in today’s home. Accordingly, the island is huge, with a raised bar ledge hiding the preparation area. The kitchen backsplash is a smooth glass surface that not only looks modern, but is also easy to clean. On the floor, 20-inch square porcelain tiles complete the look. Upstairs in the ensuite, the large porcelain tile is heated and extends right into the adjacent walk-in closet. This is luxury that makes sense for today’s lifestyle. And the builder has many more surprises for visitors to the fall Parade of Homes. Artista is entering three display homes, each featuring a cutting-edge design. At 55 Wood Sage Crescent in Sage Creek, the main floor overlooks the great room, giving the lower level 18-foot ceilings. Never has a basement been so integrated into the entire home. The walkout lower level also features a double-sided fireplace between the great room and games area.

The main floor features a sleek contemporary ribbon-style fireplace that sets a modern ambience throughout the home. A huge suspended deck leads to a second deck on the lower level. As for the kitchen, glass pantry towers are a must-see that will have Manitobans talking for a long time. In fact, the buzz is sure to start even before visitors enter the main living areas. A rounded entry in a turret design features a built-in leather bench running along the semi-circular walls. This is truly a house befitting the distinctive community of Sage Creek. With its parklands, greenways and community amenities, the development is thoughtfully designed to meet the lifestyle today’s homeowners demand. Artista Homes is proud to be part of the concept. “We believe Sage Creek is going to be one of the fastest growing developments in Winnipeg,” says the builder. “When Qualico creates a development, they truly put everything into it.” The same could be said for Artista. Two more display homes highlight this commitment to leading edge design: 123 Bridlewood Road in Bridgwater Forest and 79 Portside Drive in Van Hull Estates. Once again, they showcase that as a premiere custom builder, the company knows what it takes to build a home for the lifestyle today’s homeowners deserve.

shower —with rain head, showerhead and body sprays—and a separate commode.

Hearth Homes is a good fit for Sage Creek, and vice versa. Both the builder and the development offer Manitobans something distinctly different that is sure to garner the interest of the home seeking public. In its display home at 63 Wood Sage, Hearth Homes combines the welcoming warmth of a traditional style with a modern layout for today’s lifestyle.

From the exterior, the façade also differentiates this Hearth display home. A front porch with white double posts combines with cultured fieldstone for traditional appeal. John Hardie siding covers all four sides of the house.

“The kitchen is twice the size of any home with this square footage,” notes Rob Wickstrom of Hearth Homes. Glass subway tiles add depth to the backsplash while cherry Shaker cabinets are topped with lit, glass-fronted units that exude a warm glow. Daring to buck the trend, Hearth Homes chose rich oak hardwood flooring for the main floor. Large 18-inch ceramic tiles define the foyer, while a welcoming archway leads to the dining room featuring a butler’s pantry/bar. Thanks to a stunning bank of windows two storeys high, the great room is flooded in natural light. Upstairs, a private but open sitting area overlooks the great room and joins the bedroom areas. An incredibly spacious ensuite off the large master bedroom includes a 5 x 7 ft

At the back, the partially covered deck offers the best of both worlds. The walkout lower level leads on to a naturalized pond, one of the many natural assets of this beautiful and sustainable new development. With a vision for preserving the best nature has to offer, Sage Creek combines the latest ideas in community planning with the neighbourly feeling of a small town.

The Craftsman-style bungalow at 20 Lake Forest once again takes full advantage of the naturalized landscape. Along with large rear windows, the main floor features a covered balcony as well as recessed garage. “Come visit our friendly sales staff so we can create the home that suits you best,” says Wickstrom. “With Hearth Home’s Fix Price guarantee, these and all other features won’t cost a cent above the agreed on price. You’ll like what you see.”

“It is destined to develop into a very sought after community for raising a family,” notes Wickstrom. Hearth Homes picks the location of its display homes locations carefully. Therefore, it’s not surprising that the builder’s other showhome is located in Waverley West’s Bridgwater Forest, another development focused on providing green spaces, walking paths and pedestrianfriendly amenities to its residents.

Attention to Detail In a truly complete custom home, all the details are carefully planned and executed, from the sweeping lines of a tray ceiling to a subtle window cladding complemented by just the perfect trim. It’s this superior level of attention to detail that customers can expect from Irwin Homes.

Prairie Oaks Cove in The Oaks. One of the first things that visitors will notice as they approach the 2,024-square-foot bungalow is that the home is attractively clad in James Hardie siding. What they might not notice immediately, however, is that the siding covers all four sides of the house, not just the façade.

This finely tuned approach to homebuilding is evident in the builder’s display home at 34

Another attention-grabber is the red metal cladding on the windows. Matching red Hardie siding trim further extends the look. Meanwhile, two wood posts stained to match the fascia and soffits provide a contrasting element to the siding and cultured stone. Marrying the interior with the exterior, Irwin Homes used the same fieldstone for the fireplace in the great room. A tray ceiling, as well as a carpet insert in the maple hardwood, defines the great room space without breaking the flow of the home.

bar with built-in wineglass holder is strategically located between the great room and the kitchen. The bar features the same sleek maple cabinets as in the kitchen, both expertly executed by Norcraft Cabinetry. A shaker door style and subtle hardware create a contemporary look, while striated water glass dresses the display cabinets. “Norcraft offers dozens of glass options,” notes Koop. Along with its elegantly glazed display area, the huge five-foot island also includes a built-in wine rack as well as an astonishing amount of storage space. The home also has a walk-in pantry and a large number of cabinets over the counter area. “We wanted to make it wow, but it still has to be functional,” says Koop.

“Sometimes when you have such an open concept, you like to differentiate the rooms,” says Krista Koop, who is the interior decorator for the family-owned Irwin Homes and works alongside her husband Andrew.

For instance, the tiled backsplash is an easy clean feature with a twist for added appeal. Installed vertically rather than horizontally, the subway tiles create a unique look.

On one side of the great room, floor to ceiling windows are cased together with wood —no drywall — to give the appearance of one large window. “Andrew is a stickler for details,” notes his wife. Across from the windows, an attractive

The countertops are another example of aesthetics combined with functionality. Made from Cambria, a solid surface natural quartz product, they offer the durability of granite with a wide choice of colours at a comparable price point.

HOMES & neighbourhoods

In the fully finished lower level, the large bar area features a Cambria countertop in a more solid colour along with maple cabinets in a charcoal stain and the same shaker style door as upstairs. Also uniting the design of the home are the wood-clad posts, constructed to match the design of those on the exterior of the house. The posts and ceiling detail separate the media room from the lower level sitting area with its sophisticated fireplace and entertainment unit. There are also three bedrooms in the lower level as well as a full bathroom. This large home is also equipped with Control4, an affordable home automation system provided by Advance Electronics.

Irwin Homes pays close attention to customer feedback and incorporates into their display homes many of the features clients have indicated as important. Along with the importance of having a media room and an open design, many homeowners have told the builder that they prefer a more open, informal eating area to a formal dining room. This house reflects this valuable input.

This is the hallmark of every Irwin Home, no matter how big or how small. To see how the builder’s dedication to quality plays out in a more modest-sized home, visitors can peruse the offering at 4 Creek Side Boulevard in Selkirk. Both showhomes are entered in the fall Parade of Homes, demonstrating the wide breadth of Irwin’s offerings in custom homebuilding.

By paying attention to these kinds of details during the custom building process, Irwin Homes ensures that each and every one of its homes meets the clients’ individualized lifestyle needs. Then the plans are realized by implementing every detail to its finest completion.

Enclave Opportunity More than 20 years ago, Qualico Communities purchased property from greenhouse growers off St. Mary’s Road in the southeast section of the city. On this land they constructed a development that saw 140 executive homes rise on a tract that stretched down to the Red River to become one of Winnipeg’s premier communities. Now, the opportunity exists to get in on what has long been one of Winnipeg’s best-kept housing development secrets as Qualico Communities releases another 21 lots following the acquisition of Vic and Nell’s greenhouses. “These are the last remaining lots in a great neighbourhood,” says Eric Vogan, Land Development Manager with Qualico. He reports that interest is building in these remaining lots, with a few homes now underway and custom homebuilders like Arlt Homes, Gino’s Homes, Foxridge Homes and KDR Design Builders present in the community. “Our goal is to offer an opportunity that not only reflects the texture of the existing neighbourhood, but encourages new complementary designs,” he says. “We will protect this design element with architectural controls that hearken back to that period and its reliance on brick, stone and board cladding to ensure a cohesive approach that will create a very rich appearance,” he continues, noting that attention to plantings by homeowners and developer alike have created a very lush texture reminiscent of many of Winnipeg’s older neighbourhoods. “With a small number of lots available, our expectation is that people will seize the opportunity to build in an area of luxury and tasteful design in a quiet riverside enclave.”

This enclave of beautiful residential properties was a rare opportunity 20 years ago. Now, opportunity knocks a second and final time. If you’ve been waiting for the right opportunity and are prepared to act swiftly, you may be one of the fortunate few who will build in this much sought after community.

- great schools, ample shopping, and a solid community that’s close to Winnipeg and all the conveniences. It’s reasons such as these that have homebuyers looking hard at Stone Ridge Meadows, a multi-phase upscale development created by Genstar, a leading developer with decades of experience.

Room to Grow

HOMES & neighbourhoods

The town of Stonewall really has it all

Located in the northwest corner of Stonewall, Stone Ridge Meadows is adjacent to an existing upscale development and within walking distance of Quarry Park, a facility that features a manmade lake and beach, along with walking trails. Lots will range from 62 to 75 feet in width, and from 125 to 150 feet in depth. Builders will be required to site homes so as to conserve as many trees as possible. As well, the developer plans to capitalize on the inherent greenery of the area by creating a picturesque entranceway to the community that is lined with two rows of mature trees. “The first phase, consisting of 50 lots, was completed last year with full underground services including sewer, water gas and hydro, and pavement was completed earlier this year. Three fully decorated and landscaped showhomes are open and ready for viewing by the public,” says Jerry Klein, Genstar’s Winnipegbased Vice-President. He suggests that the development will be attractive to many buyers who are interested in custom building a home with builders who have a great track record in the community. Discovery Homes, Warkentin Custom Homes and A & S Homes have all put their best foot forward with three new bungalow models featuring all the best finishing materials and designs anyone could imagine. “We see this as an opportunity to show Stonewall the other side of our capability with large custom executive homes,” says Gordon Gray, General Manager of Discovery Homes. He reports their current showhome is a 2,000 square foot custom bungalow with attached triple car garage and a large covered wood porch at the front of the home. “We will also be making available our 2,400 square foot two-storey that won the company a Bronze Award winner at the recent Parade of Homes.”

“The lots are large enough to expand to larger models, and all have trees and scenic views of the ponds or forest,” she adds.

Another premier builder that will join the group at Stone Ridge Meadows is Warkentin Custom Homes. This company is one of the most experienced in the area with a number of projects that date back 20 years in Stonewall.

Winnipeg-based A&S Homes is also presenting one of its most popular custom-built 1,900 square foot bungalows at Stone Ridge Meadows. A company with a considerable reputation for quality and professionalism, A&S will bring its ‘A’ game to the new Stonewall development with innovative bungalows and two storey designs in its repertoire.

“We will be coming forward with a range of offerings in Stone Ridge Meadows that will showcase our award-winning designs. Our newest showhome on Stone Ridge Drive is a bungalow, which is one of our most popular and efficient floor plans coming in at 1,805 square feet with attached double car garage,” notes Warkentin Homes’ Vice-President Melanie Snow.

“The subdivision looks fabulous,” says Frank Spezzano, Vice President of Construction for A&S Homes. “We are a good fit for this development because we are a high-end builder with the capability to do more than just a couple of homes,” he adds, suggesting that this new development will offer much to those seeking a quality lifestyle and personal enjoyment. autumn 2009 | STYLE MANITOBA | 97

Prospective homeowners want to build the most beautiful home their budget will allow. Discovery Homes’ focus on turning dreams into reality helps them achieve this goal. The builder showcases a full range of possibilities in its three showhomes. “It’s one thing to showcase high-end features but it’s equally important to show what people can get within their budgets,” notes Joshua Rist, Assistant Manager at Discovery Homes. In Stonewall, the builder displays a spacious 1,993-square-foot bungalow, tastefully filled with distinctive details. The beautiful country home features bamboo hardwoods throughout this true open concept layout. “The living room, dining room and kitchen all flow together, which makes this such a great house for entertaining,” says Rist. Finished in the classic look of maple with tile accents, the

kitchen adjoins the dining room with its double French doors. Natural light floods the entire space. An elegant tray ceiling defines the living room, while its tile fireplace and maple accents tie in with the kitchen décor. Discovery Homes also has two display homes in Waverley West’s Bridgwater Forest. The “Ross,” located at 362 Bridgland Drive North, is a compact 1,429-square-foot bungalow with three bedrooms and a finished basement. “Despite its smaller size the home feels very spacious and it really packs a punch,” says Rist. A perfect example of affordable luxury living, the home has easy-care walnut coloured laminate throughout the main floor. Rich chocolate maple cabinets with a tile backsplash in the kitchen and ensuite complete the look. Once again, distinctive details prove that a smaller house can still have plenty of style. The drywalled fireplace and entertainment unit has maple accents, while the dining area features a curved wall with an art niche. The builder paid careful attention, making use of every space. For instance, the master bedroom not only has a walk-in closet, but also a built-in closet organizer. As for the lower level, it is fully finished with a kitchenette, media room and games area.

Capitalizing on both the natural setting and its own stylish showhomes, Discovery Homes is partnering with local artist Wendy Kroeker, who is taking the colours from the interior décor and creating custom artwork to coordinate with each house. In fact, the builder has a second display home in this area, at 27 Edington Point. The twostorey features the same outstanding quality and style that is at the heart of every Discovery home. “At this time, we are choosing to display the beautiful options available to people on a budget,” says Rist. “It’s still quality and luxury living, but it’s affordable.”

Many of the homes on this street are on laned lots with the garage at the back. Also unique to this area are the extensive walking paths and wooded parkland that offer endless opportunities for outdoor recreation.

Custom homebuilding is all about meeting the unique needs of the homeowner. Many times, people who want to build will know what they want out of a home but not how to transform that vision into reality. That’s where Trikor Builders come in. “These clients had an idea of what they wanted but no real plan,” says Victor Giesbrecht of this 2,400-square-foot Sage Place home in Oakbank. “Our designer is very good at working with customers to find out what they want. Then we build it.” One of three principals at Trikor, Giesbrecht worked closely with their partner at Draftline Designs to create a layout centered on this strategically placed open staircase featuring wrought iron spindles capped by dark stained maple. “The customer really wanted something open so you could see from the front entry right through to the back,” notes Giesbrecht.

Meeting Unique Needs

Hardwood unites the main floor living area, while the kitchen is set off by ceramic tile. In the great room, the cabinetry and the granite fireplace mantel match the cabinets and countertop in the kitchen to unify the space. “Nowadays, the great room and the kitchen are where everyone spends all their time, so it’s important that everything flows,” says Giesbrecht. The décor is a perfect blend of contemporary and traditional in accordance with the homeowners’ taste. Another feature unique to the owners is the home’s five bedrooms. The family wanted enough room so their mother-in-law could live with them. During the construction, the family lived near enough to see their new house going up. “We worked very closely with them from beginning to end,” notes Giesbrecht. “It was a fluid process, with the design evolving as we went along.” A superior custom builder brings value to the process by suggesting solutions and features that the customer might not have known existed. For instance, after the designer mentioned the possibility of a walk-through pantry, the homeowners were very excited by the prospect. Since moving in, they have been delighted by how easy this feature has made bringing in groceries from the garage. In fact, the layout of the five-bedroom home is completely meeting their needs and more.

“People have very unique requirements and we’re able to make them happen,” says Giesbrecht. This ability to truly customize each home is one reason why Trikor has built a bank of regular customers over the years. Another is the company’s versatility. Aside from new home construction, the three partners – Victor Giesbrecht, Brian Arnold and Fred Giesbrecht – also provide both residential and commercial renovations to their customers.

Leading the way with LEED for Homes ®

When the Canada Green Building Council was looking for a “green” builder to partake in a pilot project for LEED® for Homes program through the USGBC in 2008, Dobie Properties, a Winnipeg-based residential and commercial builder, embraced it with open arms. And now Dobie Properties is proud to be the first Manitoba Company to have four of its condo units achieve Gold LEED® certification for this internationally recognized rating system. Not only are these units the first homes in Manitoba to achieve this high standard, they are also the first low rise multi-family units in Western Canada to be Gold certified.

condominium project, one of the first under the newly introduced program. “Our company’s passion for green building is fuelled by our belief that it contributes to everyone’s quality of life,” says company president Cameron Dobie. “We also know that it is beneficial to the homeowner’s pocketbook in the long run.” “LEED® is considered the gold standard for sustainable homes,” Cameron says. “It comes

with a third party verification from the Green Building Council, so prospective owners can be confident that their new home meets the highest green qualifications,” he adds. The four Gold certified condo units in St. Boniface are already sold out, and Dobie Properties already has two more of its popular ECO4 units in the works in St. Boniface and Osborne Village. The new projects are located at 214 Eugenie (ECO4 EMPYREAN), marketed by Marcus Barmeier and Jason Bourgeois

The LEED® (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) rating system encourages sustainable green building and development practices. LEED® for Homes promotes the design and construction of high-performance green homes that use less energy, water and natural resources, create less waste and are healthier and more comfortable for the occupants. For the buyers, it means lower energy and water bills, reduced greenhouse gas emissions, and less exposure to mould, mildew and other indoor toxins. The net cost is comparable to owning a conventional house. In March 2009, the Canada LEED® for Homes program was launched. Dobie was (once again) nationally recognized across Canada when they registered their Parish Hall

of Royal LePage and 357 River Avenue (ECO4 RIVER), marketed by Tom Blumberg of Monopoly Realty. “We are working hard to meet the growing demand for environmentally friendly homes in Manitoba,” explains Cameron. “We are hearing more and more buyers ask about green buildings because they understand the long term value that these homes represent.” Cameron notes that the recently certified ECO4 Condominium at 193 Horace reached the Gold LEED® certification for several of its features. “It was developed on an existing in-fill lot in an established historical neighbourhood. It has super insulated walls with an R50 value, and has a geothermal heating and cooling system with triple pane windows to reduce energy use by 70 percent,” he says. The units also have a useable rooftop patio for green and outdoor living, and are within walking distance to a bakery, butcher shop, grocery store, restaurants and bus stops. Dobie Properties is planning many of the same features for its new projects. “We are definitely committed to the green building concept because we know it is the way of the future. Our business development manager Syndi Prokopich is continually researching new products that we can offer our clients, plus working with good suppliers and trades who buy into the concept and embrace it as we do,” Cameron says.

“We want to give them every opportunity to make the green choice. As the demand increases for green building, we are well positioned to meet that demand. We already provide exceptional building standards and innovative designs. Our green commitment is just one more aspect of our personal customer care that sets us apart.”

The built-in value of a Power Smart* new home Planning to build a new home? Build Power Smart from the start and enjoy monthly energy savings from the day you move in. The best time to install energy efficient features is during the construction of your new home.

The Porcos added Power Smart Gold features into their home including Compact Fluorescent lights and water saving showerheads.

In May 2008, Paul and Tracey Porco built a Power Smart New Home in River Park South to accommodate their growing family. The bungalow provides the family of five with more bedrooms and space for their children to play in. “For our family Power Smart was the right option. We encourage our children to consider healthier life options and ways we can contribute to a healthier environment,” says Tracey. A Power Smart New Home helps the environment as it uses less energy, produces less greenhouse gas emissions, and uses water more efficiently to prevent waste. Homeowners enjoy lower energy costs and increased comfort. According to Kevin Sachvie, Marketing Specialist for Manitoba Hydro, Power Smart features can be added to any style of new home, without compromising home design. “The ideal time to add features is during construction, when it is most economical and convenient, rather than incurring costs and renovations at a later date,” says Sachvie. The Power Smart New Home Program provides you and your builder with a list of required energy efficient features. The requirements include: energy efficient lighting, heating, and ventilation systems; higher levels of insulation; tighter draft proofing; electronic ignition for natural gas fireplaces; water efficient showerheads; and a permanently wired car plug timer. The first step to building a Power Smart New Home is to discuss the program with your builder. “They can offer expertise and advice about integrating the Power Smart features into your new home. Your builder will also help you fill out the necessary application forms and register your home with Manitoba Hydro,” says Sachvie.

Paul and Tracey Porco’s Power Smart New Home in River Park South.

There are two levels of Power Smart features to choose from - Gold and Silver. Gold offers a higher level of energy efficiency, while Silver offers a basic set of features. Gold homeowners are eligible for Manitoba Hydro, and Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) incentives, Power Smart certification, and an EnerGuide for New Homes rating and label. This rating provides information on your home’s energy efficiency. The Manitoba Hydro incentive offers Gold homeowners a choice between a voucher for up to $1,000 towards the purchase of a front-loading washing machine or a $600 Manitoba Hydro energy bill rebate. Gold homeowners can also receive a 10 percent rebate on a CMHC mortgage loan insurance premium. See www.cmhc.ca for more details. A Power Smart Gold home can save you up to 26 percent on your monthly energy bill. A Power Smart Silver home can save you up to 16 percent on energy bills, but homeowners are not eligible for incentives. “Our builder, Sterling Homes, recommended the Gold level. In addition to the Power Smart features, we added low flow toilets and faucets, and dimmer switches in bedrooms,” says Tracey.

says Sachvie “The average cost to add Power Smart Gold features ranges between $4,500 and $6,000.” “The value of our new home surpasses the initial cost and we feel we’re contributing to a cleaner environment,” says Tracey. “With Manitoba Hydro’s rebates, it’s a win-win experience.” The Porcos learned about Manitoba Hydro’s New Home program during the Manitoba Home Builders Association (MHBA) Parade of Homes after picking up a brochure. Sachvie encourages people to visit a Power Smart showhome. “Showhomes are open during the Parade of Homes and year-round,” says Sachvie. For more information about the Power Smart New Home Program, talk to your builder or contact Manitoba Hydro at 480-5900 in Winnipeg, or 1-888-MBHYDRO (1-888-624--9376) toll-free. *Manitoba Hydro is a licensee of the Trademark and Official Mark

Reduce your heating costs by installing a programmable thermostat and setting it to lower heat by 3°C for at least eight hours a day.

“There is no cost to participate in the Power Smart New Home Program. You pay for the energy, water and heating systems as you normally would during construction of a new home. While energy efficient products may cost more than a conventional product, your monthly energy savings will pay back the difference and more,” autumn 2009 | STYLE MANITOBA | 107

Lake Life Meets Lifestyle Kenora’s historic Tunnel Island is known to the area’s ancient Anishinaabe people as Ka-izhe-ki-pi-chin or ‘a place to stay over.’ Now this place of solace and relaxation is even more hospitable, thanks to a new development that will grace its pristine shores with five buildings that will house 90 luxury suites at a site known as The Headwaters. The new $50 million development is located on the southern most tip of the island that is located just west of the town of Kenora at the mouth of the Winnipeg River on Lake of the Woods. According to Barry Hedgecock, Manager, Qualico Headwaters, the five buildings will deliver a lifestyle option few other sites can match. “At The Headwaters, it’s all about the lake and an urbane lake lifestyle that is comfortable and luxurious in a stunning natural setting,” says Hedgecock. ”There are 90 luxury lakeshore suites that range in size from approximately 1,000 square feet to more than 2,300 square feet,” he adds, reporting that suites will start around $387,000. “Two new penthouse suites have been added to the mix that will provide breathtaking views, offering sumptuous interiors that are consistent with the other suites in the project.” Describing the range of amenities, Hedgecock points to standard features such as large private terraces, stone fireplaces, galley kitchens and

granite countertops, just to name a few. Suites also include eight foot long tiled showers in the ensuites. There’s more, he says, pointing to exterior elements like tasteful shake and clapboard siding treatments that contribute to the Lake of the Woods historic flavour. “Site preparation began in the fall of 2008 and interest has been substantial,” Hedgecock adds, stating that they are continuing to take reservations and deposits on the first phase. The 3 phases will include five character buildings that house between nine and 52 residences. The site features nearly a kilometre of lake frontage with 120 private docking slips for residents and their guests.

while trees that were felled on the property are being milled for use in the interiors. “What it all comes down to is luxury amid unspoiled nature, all wrapped in a managed top tier residential development that is worry free and close to Kenora services and facilities, like dining and shopping. Whether people are interested in The Headwaters as a permanent residence or an exquisite vacation property, this is a total package without compromise.”

Utilizing the talents of Raymond S.C. Wan Architects of Winnipeg, The Headwaters uses dramatic elements to provide a continuous design theme. For example, heavy timbers and cable details are evident on balconies. In the interior Hedgecock comments that they have utilized specific materials to create true luxury residences. “We could have gone with a larger 250 unit facility, but this would not have been in keeping with the natural aspects of the site. We decided right off that The Headwaters needed to be smaller, more intimate, and given the tone of the area, more luxurious. It also had to work with the environment,” he states, noting that the designers and builders have worked hard at sustainability. In fact, granite blasted at the site is being utilized on retaining walls

No stone - or granite - was left unturned in this modern kitchen, which features product from Manitoba’s own Granite Mountain Stone Design and lighting by Super-Lite.

Photography: Michael Roberts There’s a new condo project in Winnipeg that’s taking living in style to new heights. Sky Waterfront Condominiums, overlooking the banks of the Red River, is a unique “downtown lifestyle project” that combines urban chic with one of the most sought after addresses in the city. It’s easy to see why so many people are taking up the developer’s offer to “get their piece of the sky.” Eighty-five of the 109 units have already sold with construction scheduled for completion in the New Year. Not to worry - there’s a good selection of “urban sized” 810 square foot one bedroom and den condos still available, as well as a few unique two storey lofts and larger penthouse units with stunning views of the skyline and river. (And there’s a second phase planned that will include an additional 30 smaller condos.) As one of Winnipeg’s only new urban waterfront properties, the location and amenities -which include underground parking, a fully equipped fitness centre, a residents lounge and the rooftop sky terrace - are the biggest draw for discriminating clientele, says Bill Coady, vicepresident and general manager for Sunstone Resort Communities. “This project has a more upbeat and lively urban character when compared to competing condominium communities in Winnipeg, and is ideally

positioned to be ‘the place’ to live, work and play in the downtown area,” says Coady. “Sky is at the centre of it all – the arts and theatre district and downtown sporting venues, you can walk to work and many of the city’s best restaurants, watch the fireworks from home, jog or bike along the Riverwalk to the Forks, and of course, watch Canada’s new Human Rights Museum rise from your living room window.”

sharp design. And the project developers didn’t need to look any further than Lac du Bonnet’s Granite Mountain Stone Design to find some irresistible (not to mention extremely durable) pieces of granite to furnish the countertops. The local manufacturer’s reputation spreads worldwide, with their product showcased from here to Russia and all across North America.

It’s convenience wrapped up in a chic package – from top-notch flooring choices to the contemporary lighting fixtures provided by SuperLite Lighting Ltd. Sky condos have a decidedly modern and uptown character and atmosphere; interiors for the two-storey display suite and all common areas are finished by Interior Touches, one of Winnipeg’s most popular furniture and design outlets. “The concept is to provide a space that delivers sophisticated, modern urban living at an affordable price point. Each unit has been designed to meet a variety of needs and tastes,” says Interior Touches’ Joanne Park, responsible for the interior design selections at all of Sky’s suites. “The design is very transitional and fashion-forward with lots of colours. Grey is the new beige; it’s warm, inviting and adds drama to Sky display suite interiors.” No stone - or granite - has been left unturned in delivering on its promise to serve up quality and

From Aged to Ageless By Christine Hanlon | Photography: John Johnston

When they purchased this River Heights home, the homeowners knew that while there were many beautiful features they wanted to keep, the faded ‘70s look and closedin spaces would have to be renovated. “The kitchen was the number one priority,” say Jody Sawatzky, who owns the house with her husband Mark. “We had to open the fridge door to open the dishwasher.” Besides being poorly designed, the kitchen also featured the closed in layout typical of the 1970s. The Sawatzkys preferred the open concept of their former home, which was too small to meet their needs. The couple first contacted All Canadian Renovations (ACR) when they were considering adding a second storey to their Crescentwood home. Building a new home and relocating to the suburbs was not an option. “We like older neighbourhoods,” explains Jody. “We enjoy the comfort of having everything close at hand.” So they decided to buy a larger home and have ACR renovate. To open up the space, ACR had to knock down several walls between the living room, kitchen and dining room. The renovation team called in an engineer to install support beams from above and below so the space would be structurally sound.

116 | STYLE MANITOBA | autumn 2009

“They’re really into doing it right the first time,” notes Jody. The Sawatzkys knew that a renovation requires professionals able to respond as situations arise. “Anytime there was an issue, they took care of it,” recalls Jody. “If we ever had a problem, we just had to pick up the phone and they were there the next day. Everyone was very professional. They just took care of business.” The professionals at ACR were also able to suggest innovative solutions. For instance, an angled tab to hide plumbing in one pillar was replicated in both to become a decorative feature. Potlights in the bulkhead add another unique touch. ACR was also able to match the kitchen flooring to the existing hardwood, using a border for transition. “It feels like it was there all along,” notes Jody. She adds that ACR was good at working with features the couple wanted to keep. In fact, the entire kitchen was designed around a fully functioning hood fan installed when the house was first built. Working around the stove area, ACR increased the cabinetry by reducing the seven-foot wide kitchen window. “Otherwise we wouldn’t have had any upper cabinets at all,” comments Jody. As well, there would have been fewer cabinets and no room for the fridge because the window was as low as the one in the living room.

116

“All Canadian had a designer, Jaclyn, who helped determine the placement of the cabinets for maximum functionality,” says Jody, adding that having a corner sink was also important to providing a view of the window and television, as well as facilitating interaction with guests. It was Jaclyn who introduced the Sawatzkys to the fiddlesticks backsplash. Then ACR’s Tony Teunis gave the couple a pair of tickets to The Home Show where they saw this unique material again. The natural stone proved to be a perfect complement to the espresso maple cabinetry and the two-tier white granite countertop. “We didn’t want a lot of colour,” explains Jody. “We wanted something that would never age.” The finished design is perfect both for informal eating and for entertaining. Opening the walls has eliminated the need for extra lighting in the kitchen, which is now flooded by natural light from the large front window. “There were so many awesome people we worked with,” says Jody. “We really like what they did.”

No Headaches My friend Leonard was planning a new bathroom. He asked around and a neighbour suggested a contractor that was easy to work with. Leonard called him up and the contractor came by to talk over the plans. The neighbour was right - the contractor was very personable and convinced Leonard he’d found the right guy for the job. The job was a pretty simple bathroom reno. There was new flooring and a tiled shower with a separate tub in the corner. Leonard figured the cost would run around $5000 and the time line would be two weeks. Three months later he changed his view of the contractor who had hit him with bills just shy of $25,000, and long periods where his family had to use the facilities at the local Petro-Canada up the street. If only my friend had heard of Contractor Services Link (www.cslink.ca). CS Link is a company operated by long time property mavens Garret Wong and Mark Makarovsky, business partners who joined forces with construction pro Sonny Macaluso to form this innovative consulting firm. Both Wong and Makarovsky own a mitt full of properties in Winnipeg and saw how difficult it could be to get contractors to do things done properly. Their idea was to use their considerable property management and renovation experience to keep contractors on the straight and narrow. To help they brought in builder Sonny Macaluso as the third pillar in the team and CS Link was born.

Here’s how Contractor Services Link works. According to Wong, homeowners or businesses planning a building project contact CS Link and an advisor drops by to discuss the plans. “Once we understand the scope of the job, we go to our pool of contractors and ask them to quote on the project. We arrange the appointments and then the builders use our standardized quoting system. This means property owners can see everything in terms of apples to apples with no confusion. Once the decision is made to go with a particular construction firm, we work with the homeowner and the contractor to establish firm benchmarks for payment,” he says, noting that only when timelines are met does CS Link make a payout following a full inspection. “One of the biggest problems these days is having contractors start when they say they will. We make this happen,” says Wong. “And then we follow through along the entire job making certain that each portion is done on time, on budget and to specifications. We also communicate with the contractor on the client’s behalf so that any of their concerns are voiced, removing the stress of a direct confrontation. We really take out the surprises that have become so common in the industry and include peace of mind to a renovation project.” Here’s the best part - CS Link is funded by the contractor. Home and business owners don’t pay a dime to use the service. “Because we are 119

providing the contractors an abundance of work and also make them aware they are competing for that job against other contractors in the network, our experience is such that we get builders to sharpen their pencils. In this way we can bring the costs down to levels that would be lower than most property owners could negotiate on their own. The result is that even with the fee we charge contractors, the final cost is often a positive surprise,” he says, pointing out that contractors come to them because CS Link takes the prospecting out of their workload and provides them with a steady stream of jobs. Wong states that this steady stream includes everything from fence repair to four-season sunrooms to foundation work to custom homebuilding and everything in between. There’s more. “We also offer a free hour of interior design to those looking at larger projects and for basement renovations we offer a free hour from our media consultant to people who want to make the most of a new in-home theatre.” And, while all my friend Leonard had to take away his renovation headaches was a bottle of Extra Strength Tylenol, more savvy Manitobans can now turn to the pros at CS Link. “With our standardized approach, our pool of certified contractors and performance guarantees, why would people not use us?” he asks, suggesting that getting ‘Linked’ should be job one for a worry-free home or business building project.

One Hot Product – Three Great Displays

Easyrock is the hottest building and renovation material going these days. The synthetic but extremely authentic-looking rock face has been moving off shelves at an overwhelming rate this summer, says Grant Jehle, president of Fort Distributors Ltd. “We’re really impressed with this product and so are our customers!” With Easyrock being so popular, Fort Distributors has partnered with Durabuilt Windows & Doors Design Centre, where they have opened an additional showroom in Winnipeg so Manitobans can have easier access to view product styles and colours. “The showroom at Durabuilt is wonderful,” says Jehle. “You can really see the Easyrock up close and how it works with the windows, doors and frames. It really gives the customer a great idea of what it will look like on their home or cottage.” Determined to give Manitobans even easier access to Easyrock, Jehle has also built an impressive showroom display at Form Design Centre. Customers can also see and purchase Easyrock products right on site at Fort Distributors. “We can’t say enough about Easyrock,” says Jehle, who remarks that most of his customers are installing the product themselves very successfully. “It’s easy to do, it’s affordable, and it looks amazing!”

Easyrock panels weigh only two and half pounds each, and require just eight screws to fasten to walls. Each panel is joined with a lap indent to make portions seamless in appearance. Screws are covered with caulking (Fort Distributors offers a selection of eight colours), making them virtually invisible when the installation is complete.

“We’re really excited. Our partnership with Durabuilt Windows & Doors takes it to another level where customers can preview more options and come away with products that work perfectly together,” he adds. Jehle notes that many have found it extremely beneficial to see the windows and doors within the Easyrock panels and get a firsthand look at how they seam together. The Durabuilt Windows & Doors showroom has numerous examples of various Easyrock colours with window and door styles. In fact, this is a great one-stop shop for those who are building or renovating any type of structure.

Jehle comments that the product is also extremely forgiving, making it an excellent choice for all skill levels, from the earnest novice to professional tradesmen. Fort Distributors also offers a variety of accessories, such as ledger, trim, 90-degree corners, and keystones to provide custom touches. And Easyrock can be applied directly over existing stucco, lap siding or brick.

It’s worth the trip to see any of the three Easyrock display showrooms. The product at all three locations is professionally displayed and very impressive in person.

The benefits are many. Easyrock is not only built green and aesthetically pleasing, but has also been tested to have an R-value = 5.7. That means the lightweight polyurethane panels also insulate your home, something cultured stone can’t do. The panels, which are almost impossible to differentiate from real stone, also fully meet the Canadian building code requirements for interior use.

Visit the following locations to view Easyrock: Fort Distributors Ltd. 938 McPhillips Road, St Andrews Wpg: 284-6647 Durabuilt Windows & Doors Design Centre Unit 2 - 1600 Regent Ave. corner of Regent & Lagimodiere.

“From kitchens and living rooms, to dens, bars, restaurants and lobbies – Easyrock can definitely suit them all,” says Jehle.

Painless Process

Renovating can be a daunting prospect, especially when it involves the most lived-in areas of a home. So when the Gray family decided they needed to overhaul the layout and look of the main floor in their 32-year-old house, they braced themselves for a long and painful process. “You hear so many horror stories of contractors who vanish in the middle of your renovation,” says Robyn Gray. “So when we heard that StreetSide was doing renovations, we jumped at the opportunity of hiring an established local builder rather than an independent general contractor. In the end, everything went much more smoothly than we expected. It was such a painless process.”

Gray. “We realized quickly that the company’s experience in building and decorating literally hundreds of homes every year was going to work in our favour. We knew we were going to have the peace of mind we needed to get through this level of displacement!” Relocating the patio door allowed the Grays to build a raised deck—something they could not do with the original configuration. “Having the door off the kitchen is much more practical for barbequing,” notes Gray.

Taking out the walls between the living room and the dining room not only made room for expanding the kitchen, but also created better flow between the living spaces in the house. “Before, we had this beautiful living room that we only used a few times a year,” explains Gray. “Now we see and live in it every day, and use the entire first floor much more than we ever did.” Knocking out a ‘70s-style fireplace was also part of creating the open concept. At the same

And this was no small renovation. “We knew when we bought this house seven years ago, that we would need to renovate the kitchen,” says Gray. “It didn’t make good use of the existing space. It was neither functional nor to our taste.” Although the renovation initially focused on this one area, once plans started evolving, they quickly expanded beyond the kitchen. In the end, the Grays asked StreetSide Development Corporation to strip the entire first floor and rebuild it. The reconfiguration required walls, windows and a patio door to be moved or eliminated entirely. “StreetSide was very helpful to us here because we didn’t know for sure whether we could actually have all the things we wanted,” says 123

time, this allowed StreetSide to move a wall two feet into the family room—which was already a large size—and create a wide, highly functional mudroom with ample shelving and storage space. “We literally killed about five birds with one stone by taking out the fireplace,” says Gray. Because of the gap left with its removal, the floor had to be replaced. A beautiful environmentally friendly bamboo hardwood now graces most of the main floor. The family wanted to keep the lighter hardwood in the family room, so StreetSide had the floor refinished to the same standards as the new one. The renovator also replaced the thin oak trim with thick antique white baseboards and mouldings.

stove and dishwasher were available for use almost throughout the entire renovation. One of the reasons for this efficient and effective unfolding may well be the fact that StreetSide Development Corporation already benefits from a full complement of experience in design, building and decorating, as well as having plenty of available skilled labour.

“It was great because StreetSide was always here to oversee all the trades that were coming in,” says Gray. “There was so little inconvenience. She describes a typical day during the 10-week renovation. In the morning, before leaving for work, she would spend an average of 10 minutes talking to the contractor, who would keep her updated on the day’s or week’s events, and the overall progress of the renovation. “Then I would come back from work and everything would be done and clean!” she exclaims. In all, the family lost the use of their kitchen sink for a total of only five days. The 124 | STYLE MANITOBA | autumn 2009

“They have all the necessary trades people and many good suppliers,” notes Gray. The job supervisor and the decorator were fabulous… they really made the difference for us.” The results, she adds, are even better than expected. In fact, jaws have been dropping when friends come to visit. “It’s better than a brand new house,” says Gray. “We didn’t have to move and we got exactly what we wanted.”

Rustic Spa By Christine Hanlon

The wave pattern in the Quoizel vanity fixture is the perfect complement to the beautiful fractured tile border in this easy maintenance bathroom with rich wood cabinetry. “Homeowners are increasingly looking for attractive lighting options to match their bathroom décor,” says Brett Robinson, manager of Robinson Lighting. The showroom offers more selection in vanity lighting than ever before, with a wide array of styles, shapes, sizes, colours and types of glass. “Most lights will come in two different finishes, some even three,” says Robinson, adding that many people like to match their plumbing and lighting fixtures. Chrome and brushed chrome are the most popular, while oil rubbed bronze suits a more traditional look. Many manufacturers also provide bathroom fixtures as part of complete lines to coordinate with the rest of the house. Another trend has been the installation of two vanities, such as shown here. “Regardless if it’s one or two, you want to make sure the size of the fixture matches the vanity,” Robinson points out. In this bathroom, it was equally important for the fixtures to complete the exquisite look of the sumptuous BainUltra tub from Robinson Bath Centre and the beautiful custom shower finished to full height with a mosaic tile detail.

Kitchen&Bath Taste of Tradition

There is nothing like a classic Heartland woodburning stove to bring warmth into a traditional kitchen. “People who have one say the oven is incredible,” says Dave Hoban of Embers Fireplaces & More. “You can’t seem to duplicate the way it cooks.” Unparalleled results with baked goods and roasts are matched by the visual appeal of fine craftsmanship. Details such lustrous nickel trim and porcelain panels available in several colours make it easy to incorporate the stove into a variety of kitchen decors. “It’s perfect for a log home, cottage or a timberframed house,” says Hoban. Matching refrigerators and dishwashers are also available to complete the kitchen. Because of improvements in shielding technology, the stoves no longer require as much clearance and can be installed as close as 8 inches from a wall. An ash drawer and a top or side-loading firebox make the units easy to load and clean. The stove also features a warming area on top as well as an optional hot water receptacle on the right hand side. For stovetop food preparation, an air diverter changes the direction of the heat to the four-foot wide cooking surface with its six 10-inch plates. Embers also carries a smaller unit among its full range of wood, gas and electric stoves and fireplaces. Outdoor grills and hot tubs are available as well.

Kitchen&Bath Innovative Appliances

With a counter depth of 34 inches, this Samsung refrigerator with bottom mount freezer is the right dimension for the standard allotted fridge space in most existing homes. “No one else makes that dimension,” notes Janelle Robin, General Manager at Coast Wholesale Appliances. “And it’s half the price of a standard counter depth fridge in other brands.” Samsung also combines the latest in style and technology. While this model’s pocket handles create a sleek look that coordinates with any décor or appliance, the company is also coming out with a French door model, ideal for older homes. But it’s the Samsung Quatro cooling refrigerator that is really causing a stir. This side-by-side has two bottom drawers that can be switched from cooling to freezing according to need. The innovation doesn’t stop here. “You can now get a full-line of Samsung appliances,” says Robin. The freestanding range features a three-fan true convection system as well as new 20-minute steam clean technology in addition to the standard high temperature selfclean. Both washer and dryer also come with vibration reduction technology and a steam feature that reduces the need for ironing. Available in several exciting colours, they combine innovative operation with superior styling.

Top to Bottom

In maple with an espresso stain, Kitchen Craft’s wide-rail shaker-style New Haven door lends this contemporary kitchen its sophisticated appeal. Crown moulding extends right to the ceiling, completing the finished look. “We made the hood fan and cooktop the focal point of the room,” says Gordon Guenther of Kitchen Craft. Across from the cooktop, Kitchen Craft created a large island, curved to match the bulkhead above. “There is a lot of work surface for food preparation,” notes Guenther, “and enough room for a double sink and a dishwasher.” The island doubles as a breakfast bar. Another kind of bar — the kind for serving drinks — is curved at an angle to neatly separate the kitchen from the sunroom while serving the great room as well. Kitchen Craft also created a stunning bar in the walkout lower level. In fact, Kitchen Craft took care of the cabinetry for all three levels of this home, including all the vanities in the upstairs bathrooms. The door style and stain used throughout the home is only one of 400 to 500 possible combinations. In September, the company will launch nine new colours in a high-gloss finish, perfect for that truly modern look.

Kitchen&Bath Culinary Revolution

Imagine bringing a spaghetti pot filled with water to a boil in three minutes. That’s the power of induction, an electromagnetic technology that is faster, more efficient and more responsive than any other cooking method. “Induction cooktops combine the benefit of gas and electric technology in a single unit,” explains Derek Faraci, Director of Sales at Midland Appliances. Instantaneous temperature changes mean superior results in food preparation. Thermador now offers PowerBoost™ to bring food to its highest temperature in the shortest time. At the other end of the spectrum, 10 micro-power increments enable the most precise simmering possible. “Every cooktop will get hot,” notes Faraci. “It’s the simmer that makes the difference in the quality of the food.” And since induction only heats the cookware, no radiant heat is wasted, no matter how small the pan. This also makes cleanup a breeze, as spills will never bake or crust on the cooktop. “It will change the way you cook forever,” says Faraci. He points out that at 13 inches, Thermador offers the largest induction element on the market, as well as an attractive silver mirrored finish option. These and many other induction cooktops are on live display at Midland Appliances.

Smart European Design

The new EuroSmart faucet by Grohe is the perfect addition to any contemporary bathroom. It not only looks smart, it also offers superior performance and durability. “The EuroSmart has solid brass construction and a ceramic cartridge,” says Gord Graveline, Showroom Manager at the Robinson Bath Centre. It’s all part of Grohe’s SilkMove® technology, offering the smoothest possible handle movement for effortless precision and ultimate control. Meanwhile, a chromium finish ensures a long-life shine to the soil and tarnish-resistant surface. Available in a single-hole installation or with a plate, the EuroSmart faucet is part of a complete line of Roman tub fillers, spouts, showers and safety valves, making it easy to coordinate an entire bathroom. “We have this faucet on display in the showroom along with many other Grohe products,” notes Graveline, adding that the German design and quality of the brand is popular with many consumers. “The faucets are also available with Water Sense technology,” says Graveline, “which provides up to a 30 percent water saving.” The trend towards more efficient fixtures continues. Already a popular choice for toilets and showerheads, water conservation is now extending to faucets. The Robinson Bath Centre always strives to offer its customers a full range of options. 128 | STYLE MANITOBA | autumn 2009

On the bed, a soft pink jersey gives the spread its fun and frilly look, tamed somewhat by the large lavender bolster that stretches across an abundance of pillows. Colourful glass sequins on the toss cushions inject a subtle sparkle, while the pink piping coordinates with the canopy. Layers of tulle befitting a prima ballerina form the bed skirt that completes the design. The room décor was the vision of a client who had seen a photo in a magazine and wanted to duplicate the look. Interior Illusions assisted the client in replicating the entire bedroom, including selecting paint and fabrics. Carefully sourcing just the right materials was key to softening the lines of the four-poster bed and dressing the room according to the client’s wishes. Everything from functional needs to the smallest detail received careful attention. For instance, a light-filtering shade was selected to protect this beautiful room from the fading effects of ultraviolet rays. The shade provides privacy as well. While the shade is simple, the drapery panels that frame it incorporate luxurious touches that any little princess would expect. The pleats on the drapes are bejeweled with cut glass accents in pink and white. At the same time, the tiebacks are trimmed with a satin braid from which dangle delicate glass droplets that capture the glint of the sunshine flooding through the large window. All the drapery and bedding was customdesigned and made for this specific room. Interior Illusions’ experienced team has access to a wide selection of products and resources. From design to production to installation, the team has the expertise to turn any dream into reality.

design&decor Easy to be green

You don’t have to spend a lot of green to go green with your flooring choices. According to Phil Yetman of Carpet One, the price of environmentally friendly flooring products is comparable to that of a high-end hardwood, with a couple of advantages. “It’s warm under foot, and it bounces back from dents,” he says. “We worked with one chef who drops utensils - he chose cork in his kitchen because it does hold up so well.” Cork and bamboo have become pretty standard fair in the “green” world, but a couple of more exotic materials on the market include leather, which is made with repurposed remnants made from shoes and clothing products; corn husk carpet; and a nylon that can be ground down and made into another carpet. While there are varying degrees of ‘greenness,’ Carpet One (with four locations in Winnipeg) has made it easy for customers with their “Green Select” label. To earn a Green Select label, products must currently be recyclable, contain a minimum of recycled material and/or be made from a natural, sustainable, quickly renewable resource. “Do your homework,” says Yetman, “and make your choice based on your needs, not just your wants.”

design&decor A Little Princess

Every little girl should have the chance to feel like a princess. So thought the parents who asked muralist Mandy van Leeuwen to transform their daughter’s bedroom into a land of fairy tales. The artist took her inspiration from the very German castle upon which Walt Disney World modeled Cinderella’s famous home. Turrets and rooftops are finished with the gold detail befitting such royalty. “This was a particularly special scene for the family because they come from Germany,” says van Leeuwen. “So it’s also a way of sharing their heritage.” By framing the scene with an elegant balcony, the artist created the illusion that this little princess is looking out her window at the lush setting which frames her castle beyond. In the distance, mountains make her spirits soar into a sky of cloudless blue. Whimsical details bring the picture back inside. A bird is perched on the balustrade. Roses entwine the pillars and railing. A swallowtail butterfly floats between the mythical outdoors and the interior, so real it almost seems to be moving into the room. This mural spans one entire wall of the bedroom and is painted in washable waterbased paint. Van Leeuwen is a gifted artist, whose work can be seen in many murals throughout the city, including many animal enclosures at the Assiniboine Park Zoo.

Wonderful Waterfalls

There is nothing more beautiful and relaxing than the sight and sound of a cascading waterfall. Now consumers can enjoy this soothing ambiance in their own home with a hanging waterfall from Napoleon. “It’s a very nice feature, especially above a fireplace,” says Helen Peters of Classic Fireplaces. “Fire and water are very effective together.” A track light at the top adds an extra shimmer to the flowing water. Napoleon also offers an optional grooved panel for a ripple effect. “It’s a great piece for a foyer or any other feature wall,” notes Peters. Along with a selection of interior waterfalls in a variety of shapes, styles, colours and sizes, Classic Fireplaces also has freestanding units that can be placed both indoors and outdoors. The units are easy to bring inside in the winter and are perfect for any three-season room. “They give the air a nice mix,” says Peters. In fact, the waterfall acts as a humidifier, reducing static and improving the overall health and comfort of the home. Some units can be used in conjunction with a UV sterilizer to keep the water pure. Classic Fireplaces has two sizes of indoor waterfalls on display, as well as a multitude of fireplaces, barbecues, stoves and accessories.

design&decor Earth-Friendly Window Treatments

What sets Graber solar shades apart are not only their superb customizable design, but also their many Green by Nature™ properties. While allowing natural light to filter through and reduce the need for indoor lighting, these cellular shades block out the sun’s heat as well as harmful ultraviolet rays that can fade furniture and flooring. “And in winter, they have an insulating effect,” notes Teressa Luciw, Marketing Coordinator at Abbey Window Coverings. Keeping the home cooler in summer and warmer in winter increases energy efficiency and reduces costs. “These cellular shades are designed and engineered to be durable,” adds Luciw. “Choosing a window covering with a long life reduces landfill waste associated with short-lived products.” All of the components—fabrics, aluminum handrail and plastic components—are recyclable. In fact, the plastic components already contain 50 percent pre-consumer recycled materials. Even the corrugated cardboard used to package all Graber products contains 35 to 40 percent recycled content. “Both the cardboard and bubble wrap are 100 percent recyclable,” notes Luciw. Boxes are custom cut to the exact size of the shade, thus reducing both waste and energy involved in transportation. As a result of all this careful attention to sustainability, Graber products meet U.S. standards for LEED.

Design-A-Floor

The makers of luxury floor tiles have made it easier than ever before to create a signature look for any floor in the home. “When you choose Mannington’s Adura Elements, you’re buying a whole system,” explains Tim Pariseau, Sales Manager for Curtis Carpets. Consumers can design their own pattern from five stylish colours and three shapes, or they can select one of five popular pre-designed combinations. Pictured in this featured pinwheel pattern, 12-inch square Sicilian Stone Magma tiles are interspersed with 6-inch square Metallica Antique Copper accent tiles, for a look that suits both a formal and casual setting. A 12” X 24” option is also available for the larger tiles. Meanwhile, the smaller deco stone and accent tiles are available in a total of four different colours. Realistically replicating the look of ceramic tile and stone, today’s generation of luxury tiles are becoming increasingly popular with homeowners. “They’re warmer and softer underfoot than ceramic tile,” notes Pariseau. He adds that because the grout is acrylic, homeowners never have to worry about cracks in the grout lines. Pre-mixed for absolute consistency, the grout comes in eight different colours, allowing homeowners to coordinate or contrast with their tile choices.

True Craftsmanship When it comes to hardwood floors, installation can make all the difference. “We send someone to your home who not only can do the job, but can do it exceptionally,” says Paul Friesen of Heartland Wood and Cork Floor Co. The custom inlay on Heartland’s showroom floor is a fine example of the level of skill the company offers its customers. Friesen points out that in the flooring industry, there are very few specialists. “For over 16 years Heartland has solely focused on installing and refinishing hardwood, and cork floors,” he explains. “Our installers are at the top of their field and certification from the National Wood Floor Association training program is just a starting point to years of honing the specialized skills that produce a finished floor that is the best that it can be.” The same professionalism applies to Heartland’s dedicated refinisher, who specializes only in hardwood finishing and has trained with the top finish manufacturers and suppliers. At the same time, Heartland is always on the lookout for superior products.

“We have a new line of wood that is beyond compare,” says Friesen. “We are excited because it not only meets our standards, it exceeds our expectations.” The Model standards are so high their raw material is better than many of the competition’s finished products. This trend setting line offers unique colours such as Andalucia, 1969, and Akoya, as well as the award winning E Series, a solid antiqued Maple plank floor designed to reduce the seasonal movement that occurs in all wood floors. Only available at selected companies, Model offers a 25-year warranty on both product and the installation when the floor is installed by a Model certified installer. “The company approached us to represent them,” explains Friesen. “They feel that we share the same quality, craftsmanship, attitude and reputation.”

final result. Time and again, people come to Heartland because they know they will get exactly the floor they wanted. “You don’t have to settle,” says Friesen, adding that buying the right floor the first time is a much wiser investment than having to fix or replace a floor several times. “Here you can be confident that you’ve made an investment in your home, not just spent money.” The same can be said for Heartland’s superior floor refinishing services. “We are the only dedicated hardwood and cork flooring company who does refinishing,” Friesen points out. Time and again, clients have come back to Heartland to share their excitement at seeing their floor come back to life, surpassing their expectations. It’s a passion the team at Heartland shares because they know that with the proper care, a cork or hardwood floor is an investment that will last a lifetime.

No matter which selection a customer makes from Heartland’s wide range of wood and cork products, they can be guaranteed a worry-free

design&decor The Psychology of Design

You could call Joanne Park a design specialist one who uses colour swatches and fabric samples to stitch together impeccable rooms. “Design is about psychology - understanding personalities and listening to clients to create the best design for them,” says Parks, who owns Interior Touches on St. Mary’s Road. Whether it’s contemporary or classic, there’s a way to achieve a balance between form and function. For example, you can have a causal style, but it can still look great. By the same token, you can have a room that looks great and is still comfortable. “It’s a blending of looks,” says Parks, who cautions clients not to be afraid of colour. “People think colour will go out of style or will hurt the resale value, but it actually helps because people respond to colour; they’re bored with neutrals.” Don’t be overly concerned with trends either. Choose colours, textures and patterns that speak to you and then leave it up to the professionals to find a way to make it work. Parks’ most important piece of advice: “Book an assessment with a professional design consultant. It will be the best investment you make.”

Marvellous Mirage

The warm glow of this Mirage hardwood floor is only one indication of its superior quality. “The care and detail involved in creating this product is incredible,” says The Floor Show’s Maggie Berthiaume, who recently returned from the Mirage mill in Quebec. Because many of the woods are sourced from northern North America, Canadian homeowners can be assured that they are conducive to our climate. Berthiaume adds that the mill takes pride in ensuring the wood is properly conditioned. “They keep the drying slow so the wood will acclimatize properly,” she explains. Automated monitoring ensures the wood reaches optimal conditions before going into the kiln. Inspections are conducted every step of the way, from milling to staining to final shipping. Mirage offers a wide selection of species including red oak, maple, birch, beech, ash, and exotics in planks from two to five inches. The company produces both a ¾-inch solid as well as an engineered line. A new lock series is ideal anywhere a floating floor is required. Berthiaume was particularly impressed by the thickness of the Mirage veneer. “I think if you’re selling a product, it’s important to know how it’s produced,” she adds. This level of due diligence is a fine example of the quality customers can expect from The Floor Show, Manitoba’s premiere flooring specialist. 134 | STYLE MANITOBA | autumn 2009

design&decor Rest Easy

Contrasting rose stitching adds a distinctive detail to the tailored styling of this full grain Mariette leather sofa. Based in Montreal, Linea Vincenzo combines the best in Italian design with hardwood Canadian construction and firm, boxed-in seats. Set against a curved backrest, the cushioned seatback is even zippered for easy clean maintenance. “They want to make sure that you can take care of it easily,” says Richard Mandarano of Contessa Fine Furniture, “because this is furniture that is going to last a long time.” The seating comes with two moveable bolsters available in matching or contrasting leather. Customers can choose from various grades and colours. The stitching is also available in different colours, as are the wooden box legs that, together with the wide square arms, give the seating its contemporary profile. “It’s always nice to have options,” says Mandarano. “It makes it easy for customers.” Ever since opening in 1971, Contessa Fine Furniture has always been customer-focused. The family owned business has continued to grow, thanks to a commitment to value and reliability. Customers can rest easy, not only because they know their furniture will be comfortable, but also because they realize that at Contessa quality is a guarantee.

Total Renovation

When the homeowners decided to renovate all 5,500-square-feet of their solidly built 25-yearold bungalow, they turned to a builder they knew would be capable of undertaking such a project. “The customer wanted everything updated,” recalls Lori Veenstra of Pine Creek Homes. To create a more open concept on the main floor, the builder moved interior walls in the bathroom and kitchen. Among the many changes, Pine Creek added a modern fireplace at eye-level to the new raised quartz built-in table top. An adjoining granite working island incorporates ample storage and the latest amenities, while rift cherry cabinets in a flat profile complete the contemporary look. “Our job as a builder is to create what the customer wants,” notes Veenstra. The builder’s job is also to minimize the amount of time people have to move out. This requires adept organization and efficient use of time so the project moves as quickly and smoothly as possible. “That’s where our technical expertise and years in the business come into play,” says Veenstra, adding that a renovator must know how to solve issues and problems as they arise. “We do a fair number of large complex additions and renovations, so we know what it takes.”

design&decor Fabulous New Fabrics

A home is more than a house - it is a cozy armchair to curl up in with a good book, a warm bed to snuggle in at night. It is a kitchen table where you share an enjoyable meal with family, a desk for doing homework or dreaming your most cherished dream. Creating a dream space and pulling all the details together in a cohesive decorating scheme is beyond the expertise of many people, which is why it’s great to have the assistance of an experienced designer. In fact, many homeowners seek the advice of professionals when decorating their space, whether it’s one room or an entire home. Windows of Fashion has been redefining luxury for over 30 years. These are days for inspired optimism and ambitious creativity. Consumers can experience exciting new collections from Calvin Klein, Barclay Butera and Candice Olson by visiting the company’s showroom, which offers a diverse selection of products, furnishings and accessories. “It is our purpose and pleasure to supply customers with the broadest range of quality fabrics, furniture and accessories that the interior design industry has to offer. We’re driven, we’re optimistic, and we’re here to support our clients,” says owner Sonya Devriendt. At Windows of Fashion, experienced professional designers help their clients select purchases that have lasting quality, extraordinary beauty and unusual power. Surroundings - the other arm of Devriendt’s company - offers customers the opportunity to “create” one-of-kind duvet covers and bed skirts, along with bed and accent pillows for a complete design experience. With numerous design options, each duvet cover is as unique as the client for whom it was created. “In challenging times, our clients are purchasing products that will have abiding relevance. They seek an attractiveness and richness that is elegant instead of showy, and we are there to help them through this process,” notes Devriendt.
