the agenda I’m smiling right now because this summer has been such a good one. Your

Thoughts Wonderful coverage on Investors Group Field in your summer issue! I liked how much attention was paid to describing the cascading downward design, how the seating has changed and what the differences are from the old stadium to the new one. I’ve been to the new stadium twice now, and was truly impressed. While I’m blown away by this awesome new centre, I also think something has to be done about traffic flow on game or concert days! Aaron Walters, Winnipeg Excellent home design shown in Seeing the Light, the article featuring Trademark Homes in the summer edition of Style Manitoba. Refreshingly contemporary – and by a builder I didn’t know of until reading the story. Kudos to this Manitoba builder for bringing something new to the market! Alan Johnston, Winnipeg What a great magazine you people put out! I loved the food, fashion and entertainment sections in your recent issue, and the home design ideas are wonderful. (Makes me want to redo every room in my home!) My husband reads Style Manitoba as well, but he usually just drools over the car section. Keep up the good work! Denise Jenkins, Winnipeg I was happy to see more pages devoted to recipes in the spring issue of Style Manitoba. I’m always looking for new dishes to prepare and your recent coverage gave me more new recipes to try out on my family. Please keep it coming! Beth Newton, Winnipeg I simply loved the unique outdoor fireplaces featured in your latest issue. The Outdoor Living section of Style Manitoba is actually my favourite part of the magazine. It’s amazing to see so many lovely landscape designs created by the local talent. And it’s also great to know there are such unique products for outdoor living available right here in Manitoba. Who’d have thought? Cynthia Hermann, Winnipeg

A flawless blend of traditional warmth and contemporary design makes this Deer Pointe Drive home in Headingley a stunner. Set against the backdrop of Breezy Bend Country Club, the one-of-a-kind residence was designed and built by Artista Homes to defy expectations every step of the way. From the exposed aggregate driveway through the fully landscaped rear yard, Artista’s innovative ideas and quality craftsmanship are on full display. Built on an elevation, the home quite literally rises above it all as an island unto itself. Unimpeded views from nearly every window encompasses an element of water, either the inground pool in the backyard, the ponds and small lakes of the Deer Pointe development or the resort-style landscaping. “We incorporated water features right into the build, such as the terraced pond in the front yard and the linear LED-lit fountains in the concrete wall near the entrance,” says Frank Cotroneo of Artista Homes. Once inside, it’s clear the home was built to take advantage of the views. Bringing the outdoors in are huge triple-pane low-E argon gas windows by JELD-WEN overlooking the backyard area that are framed by walls of natural stone. With 6,000 square feet of total living space, scale was key to this home’s successful interior. Arnold Tiessen of Interior Illusions achieved that balance by choosing a large leather sectional and accent chairs for the great room.

The main floor of the open concept home features soaring vaulted ceilings with pine paneling. Raw concrete wall accents channel the look and feel of a trendy loft, while wide plank hickory wood flooring installed by Curtis Carpets and large wood beams lend rustic warmth and serve to ground the space. A black metal clad linear gas fireplace with crushed glass is the focal point of the great room, while four distinctive chandeliers from Total Lighting add bold traditional touches.

The great room space includes an unfinished concrete feature wall that showcases the linear metal clad gas fireplace.

At night, the home exudes warmth and sophistication. Autumn 2013 | STYLE MANITOBA | 9

The talented team from Interior Illusions helped develop the interior design plan for this distinctive home, and chose the ideal furnishings, window treatments and accessories. With their simple, refined lines, the substantial dark leather chairs and roughhewn wood accent tables complement the great room perfectly. Connecting the great room and main bedroom wing to the kitchen and dining areas is a unique bridge that effectively “floats” over the home’s lower levels. Flanked by stainless steel

railings and glass panels, the bridge adds an interesting dimension while maintaining the home’s airy feel. The gourmet kitchen is a study in style and function, complete with stainless steel appliances by Sub-Zero and Wolf. Black quartz stone countertops on the prep area and on the oversized island are sleek and sophisticated. A window incorporated over the sink area overlooks a lake and lets in loads of natural light. The walk-in pantry keeps food articles

discretely concealed, yet easily accessible. Dark stained Kitchen Craft cabinetry includes quietclose door hinges and drawer hardware that are essential in this open concept home. Meals can be enjoyed on the other side of a low partition wall, in an intimate dining area overlooking the front yard. Alternatively, the eating area on the opposite end at the back of the home, with its large windows and natural stone accent wall, is the perfect setting for a big, casual repast. Abundant windows and deck areas afford multiple views of the glorious backyard.

The four-season sunroom has triple-pane JELD-WEN windows on all sides to make the most of the spectacular views. An intimate dining area at the front of the home off the kitchen could also function as a home office.

guests can step outside onto the walkout deck surrounded by aluminum and glass railings, and descend to the backyard via a spiral staircase. The same scenic vistas can be enjoyed from the inside too. “Adjacent to the deck we created a four season sunroom inside the home,” Cotroneo notes. “The views from here are spectacular.”

Spectacular indeed. The beautiful golf course bordering the west side of the yard is the backdrop to a fun and fully landscaped yard designed for the ultimate in entertaining. As Cotroneo acknowledges, “We had a nice lot to work with.” A custom heated inground pool contours around a golf green complete with putting green, pitching area, sand trap and ball washer. A beach volleyball court, hot tub, an outdoor fireplace, pond and fountain round out this veritable playground for kids of all ages. Autumn 2013 | STYLE MANITOBA | 15

The open concept master bedroom leads to an amazing glassed-in ensuite area.

The other major space on the main floor is the master bedroom. Stone accents, wood beams and vaulted pine ceilings seamlessly bring this room into the overall design theme. A gas fireplace and wet bar are among the details that make this space stand out. The master bedroom’s wide-open, contemporary ensuite is completely glassed in and comes complete with freestanding tub supplied by The Ensuite, and a television built into the mirror above the vanity. A huge glassed-in shower by Fort Rouge Glass features a full two-person body shower with marble tile and bench, plus a TV set flush into the wall. On the other side of a wall partition is a massive walk-in closet with a set of stairs leading up to a small loft area devoted (ladies, take note) entirely to shoe and purse storage. As in the rest of the home, the ensuite is fully wired for sound. “We incorporated lots of little and unexpected details in this home, Cotroneo says. A set of carpeted stairs leads to the upper level and two more bedrooms, which come equipped with a walk-in closet and bathroom with double sink. Each bedroom has access to a glassed-in balcony that flows around to a big deck overlooking the pond area at the front of the property. A dark stained maple open riser staircase built by Winder Woodworks descends to the walkout basement where more delightful features await. The first of these is a large temperature controlled wine cellar complete with a Mediterranean-inspired wine tasting grotto area. Oak barrels are ingeniously topped with rough concrete slabs and used as tables; one cleverly houses a sink.

Deep freestanding tub and fixture from The Ensuite commands centre stage.

Autumn 2013 | STYLE MANITOBA | 17

A temperature-controlled wine cellar and unique Mediterraneaninspired wine tasting grotto is the conversation piece of the lower level.

“There was lots of room on the lower level and we wanted to try something different,” Cotroneo notes. Ten-foot ceilings, light coloured wood flooring and lots of windows contribute to the airy quality of this expansive lower level, which is also perfect for entertaining. An open concept theatre room with full screen dominates one side, while a games area takes centre stage. Another wet bar and gas fireplace can create the perfect ambience for hosting friends and family, or simply for relaxing. This level also offers all the amenities for an active lifestyle. A home gym room has large windows looking out to the backyard. A rubberized floor provides a safe, clean and comfortable surface for equipment and cardio activities. At the entrance from the patio and pool is a shower and locker room area to help keep water and sand from tracking into the rest of the home. A steam room equipped with benches and a built-in TV rivals that found in a high-end spa. Another bedroom with a walk-in closet and window completes the lower level. With over 5,500 square feet of living space, the home required 400 amp electrical service, as well as dual high efficiency furnaces and AC units. “This home has Control4 home automation installed by K&S Electronics,” Cotroneo explains. “It’s fully integrated so you can control temperature, lighting, security, sound, video and more from your smart phone or tablet – either inside the home or remotely.” Even typically neglected areas have earned Artista Homes’ luxury treatment. The three-car side entry garage has glass doors and an epoxy covered heated floor that slopes to a drain. The garage is fully wired for TV, speakers and lighting. Outside, the concrete stairs are heated, and a fully integrated inground sprinkler system has been installed - all in keeping with the home’s many low maintenance characteristics. This dream home comes with all of the amenities to bring years of comfort, style, functionality and fun – raising the bar for a luxury lifestyle in Manitoba. “It truly is your very own private resort,” Cotroneo says.

Change is Güt By Kelly Gray Photography: Michael Roberts

The winds of change are blowing at Mercedes Benz Winnipeg (MBW). Long viewed as the city’s premier luxury car dealer, MBW has brought on a new General Manager and is readying for a move to a new state of the art sales and service centre next year. This past July, Mercedes Benz Winnipeg President Brian Lowes brought Texas native Mark Kelly on board as GSM. Kelly comes from a lifetime of experience in the US luxury car market where he was successful in generating strong sales through relationship building. Here in Winnipeg he sees the sales challenges in the same light, and expects to continue building on the dealership’s incredible customer loyalty. “I continued to be impressed by the number of trades we have,” he says, noting that his strategy is to service the customer not the car. “We offer a total package. Our customers come back for the service, the cars speak for themselves.” Indeed, Kelly points out the Mercedes Benz has been successful in redesigning its line to make them more attractive to a younger demographic. Gone are the ‘my father’s car’

models. In their place are edgy, spirited sedans, coupes and wagons that quietly proclaim automotive superiority and a ride that is built to thrill. “The entire line has undergone an evolution that has made Mercedes the most sought after car brand among a younger clientele.” Speaking about some of the amazing design innovations he says, “The new ‘S’ Class actually remembers a road that has been driven on. As you drive, it anticipates each curve, bump and corner using a combination of GPS and computer technology. We have a new CLA compact sedan that will amaze, given its price point in the mid $30’s. The 2014 ‘E’ Class is all new and shows an edgy design that is dramatic and technologically superior, making it the one to watch next year.” It’s in this vein that Mercedes Benz Winnipeg will open their new centre in 2014. “This will be a big league store that will showcase not just our cars and award winning service, but will show how Winnipeg has grown to the point where only the very best will do,” he says, reporting that the new facility will be on

Kenaston just north of the Commons. “The location will mean ease of access. You won’t have to drive out past the Perimeter Highway or to Transcona to drop in to the dealership. We have always been centrally located close to where people live. We wanted to make certain this continues with our new site that will be much bigger and offer more of the reasons we have earned such a high level of customer respect.” Mark Kelly joins a team at Mercedes Benz Winnipeg that has been built on integrity and product knowledge. The team includes Mercedes trained service professionals that work alongside the experienced and contemporary sales staff in a one-two approach that creates a seamless support to the industry’s best automotive experience. “Everybody else sells cars. Here at Mercedes Benz Winnipeg, we share an experience that is unlike any other in the world of driving,” he says, inviting those interested in discovering the difference to drop down to Portage and Moray to see why they remain tops in luxury and excitement.

Art Meets Change: Hope McIntrye, Sarasvàti & FemFest by Ian Mozdzen

Art and social change have always gone hand-in-hand for Hope McIntyre. Now at 40, and an award-winning playwright, director, teacher, and changemaker, Hope is also currently enjoying two 10-year anniversaries; as artistic director of Sarasvàti Productions, and as producer of FemFest, a festival of plays by women showcasing local, national, and international work. And the activism runs in the family! Hope’s mother ran against the grain to pursue education after early motherhood, going on to teach, study theology, become a church minister, and practice social mediation. Dad? He studied criminology, worked in halfway houses, and sits on boards for homeless shelters and soup kitchens. Oh, and civil rights pioneer Mahatma Gandhi and Nobel Peace Prize-winning Mother Teresa are also inspirations. Tough acts to follow! Growing up in Saskatoon, Hope rose to the challenge -- immersing herself in school drama projects linked to Amnesty International and human rights issues. But it wasn’t until university that Hope’s path revealed itself. Pursuing acting at the University of Saskatchewan, she performed a gamut of roles written for women, but quickly became disenchanted. “I started to feel that the typical roles weren’t of interest to me ... there wasn’t a lot of depth,” she says. To find depth? She needed to direct --- and a masters program at the University of Victoria gave Hope the chance. “I wanted to create work with something to say,” Hope explains, adding that her final project production was to be a feminist game-changer: Fefu and her Friends (1977) by Cuban American playwright María Irene Fornés. The play radicalized with its deconstructed realism, revision of space, and uniquely personal female voices.

One catch: “The faculty had no experience with feminist theatre,” Hope explains. “And all my professors were men.” The consequence? “They said [Fefu] was ‘too dated’.” Fefu hit the backburner. “It’s not entirely intentional,” Hope concedes. “But women are often left out ... We are dealing with a history of men running theatres. Many men choose scripts they can relate to, and they relate to them because they see the male experience as universal.” Not all was lost. Instead, Hope directed This is for you, Anna, based upon the murder of a young girl and a mother’s revenge. The play was devised in the mid1980s by those who would found Toronto’s Nightwood Theatre, Canada’s oldest professional women’s theatre company. Nightwood has not only produced iconic plays like Good Night Desdemona (Good Morning Juliet) by acclaimed playwright / novelist Ann-Marie MacDonald and Harlem Duet by Djanet Sears, but also advocates, trains, develops, mentors, and engages in youth outreach. Nightwood and Hope walk the same path: “Creating opportunities for women is important to me,” Hope affirms. Following years took her to England, and then to Toronto, where her company, Sarasvàti Productions, was born in 1998. Named after the Hindu goddess of arts, Sarasvàti lets Hope pursue playwriting, directing, and producing -- all with a feminist bent. But it’s been in Winnipeg where it’s all flourished. Enter FemFest 2003. “It was very small at first. We said ‘You can have one bin of props’,” she laughs. “Really, it was all about script, not production: minimal.” From there? “FemFest just grew.” Now the festival features numerous productions, readings, workshops, touring presentations, and cabarets.

Harold and Vivian Entertain Guests - Alissa Watson, Brittany Thiessen, David Fox and Colin Connor; photos by Janet Shum

Some standout FemFest moments? “The guests!” Hope exclaims. In 2012, Canadian theatre luminary Judith Thompson (best known for 1990‘s Lion in the Streets) graced the festival with talks, readings, and a master class. And Australian Tammy Anderson’s onewoman show, I Don’t Wanna Play House, is also highly praised by Hope for its powerful treatment of aboriginal issues. Community engagements have also proven remarkable. In 2011, the festival developed an interactive play about racism with Aboriginal youth: No Offense. The play would go on to tour Manitoba high schools. “That’s rewarding -- to see shows have life beyond the festival.” Hope also reports that Cairn Moore’s Shiksa -- originally presented in a FemFest reading -- will be produced by Winnipeg Jewish Theatre May 2014.

Also featured will be Jessy Ardern’s Harold and Vivian -- chosen by audiences for production in 2012’s Bake-Off, which saw playwrights given a list of dramatic ingredients for quick scripting. And special guest playwright Djanet Sears (Harlem Duet) will offer a master class, a reading, and lecture. “Our ultimate goal is not to need the festival, but until then, there are new women playwrights all the time! It really flabbergasts us,” reflects Hope. Beyond FemFest? Sarasvàti’s offering subscriptions for 2013-14: FemFest in fall, International Women’s Week Cabaret of Monologues in winter, and a full-scale production of Fefu and her Friends at the historic Ralph Connor House in the spring. “I love the work we’re doing,” Hope affirms. Check out sarasvati.ca for more details.

Highlights for September 2013’s FemFest? Touring work comes from Montreal’s La Tigressa Productions with the heartfelt Dreaming in Autism, as well as from Toronto’s paul watson productions with the distinctly West Indian pomme is french for apple.

Home Run for Indian Dining Think outside the Indian buffet ... inside Shaw Baseball Park! Clay Oven’s now dishing out curve balls for Indian dining from its new sporty second location. The sporting energy permeates Clay Oven: a spacious layout intersects eastern stylings with contemporary sensibility, and edges of glass, steel, wood, and tile. And since we’re on the field, we get to taste tandoori AND cheer our team on -- from booths, big dining tables, bar stools, or the impressive outdoor field-side patio.

LOSE WEIGHT with 1 PILL A DAY the VISI way

Keeping cool to start, a creamy straw-suck: Mango Shake. Citrusy puréed mango gets frothed up with milk. Delicious. The house Chai hits all the traditional spots: piping hot, milky, and wafting spice. The menu features appetizers, dishes, and comprehensive platters. A vegetarian starter: Aloo Tikki. These fluffy potato cakes are smooth and herby with sweet fenugreek, cumin seeds, ginger, onions, cheesy paneer, and spice. Lathered up with sweet dark tamarind and mint sauce, each bite is divine. For an exotic treat? Hakka. Southern Chinese in origin, Hakka cuisine artfully balances meat, vegetables, and spice for health and taste. Fish is a tasty catch: pillowy bite-sized pan-fried whitefish is gobble-friendly jazzed up with Hakka spices. Bigger Eastern eats boast even bigger flavour. Scallop Masala Dar sees meaty mouth-watering seafood cooked zestfully with crunchy pepper medley, sweet onions, and a swirling spice blend. To stretch the spice? Tandoori flatbread! Two lovingly made variations are perfect. Mozzarella is generously filled with gooey goodness, and Onion Kulcha is sweetened up with onion. Yeasty, puffy, satisfying. Noodle time! Back to another Hakka treat: Manchurian Noodles. Our robust lamb variation gets sizzled with plump rice noodles in a bold blend of coriander, ginger, green onions, and chili sauce. A juicy Mojito is gulp-friendly. The Cuban cocktail gets reborn with pomegranate juice and muddled basil. Refreshing! And from the loose-leaf tea selection comes Zingiber Ginger Coconut. Ginger zip, coconut quench, and intoxicating red rooibos make this aromatic steeper a must-sip.

That’s Chez Sophie Sur Le Pont! On the Esplanade Riel, that is -- the gateway between our historic Forks Site and St. Boniface. And even though Sophie’s just opened, she’s already an it-girl. No surprise! The original Chez Sophie Bistro in St. Boniface run by Stéphane and Sophie Wild has been long praised for its Parisian flair. Now Sur le Pont, Sophie’s puttin’ on the Ritz: Part gourmet sparkler, part hip diner, and all spectacular views! Windows overlooking the river light up the restaurant by day and usher in nighttime magic. Blonde wood, chrome, glass, and plush booths encased by soaring ceilings finish the effect. A smiling waiter is ready to take our order (en français, if it pleases!) ... A fanciful Pastis apéritif; on the rocks, the mellow anise conjures the undying French romance with absinthe. For zest, a Lime Margarita. Tonight, it’s blended special with real lime juice and super-spiked with salt. We thirst for more! Local French fare for appetizing? Trappiste’s Toast sees aromatic Manitoba-sourced monastery cheese melted with mushroom atop baguette. Mussels are a lip-smacking dream drenched in cream sauce! Hint: get extra baguette to sop the dregs. For bigger bites, classics are prime. Tender sliced Duck Breast is sweetly accented with dark balsamic vinegar reduction and shallots, and paired with soft white beans cooked creamy with smokey bacon and pearly onions. Crisp house salad complements. Refuse Sophie’s veal cutlet? Never! The menu promises it will “simply melt in your mouth.” Sophie delivers: the delicate meat is covered in cream sauce. A side of piping Gratin Dauphinois impossibly improves the perfection. The buttery southeastern potato comes accented with even more bacon, onions, and mushrooms. For extra, Black Salad is substituted for House. Simple, but sophisticated, leaves are dressed in Parmesan, mustardy balsamic dressing, and shaved dark chocolate! A must-try. Washing all this down? From northern Rhône comes Cave Saint Désirat Ardeche’s Syrah. This countrystyle sip is juicy and flowery. Love the baguettes? You’ll love dessert, too! Both hail from iconic Le Croissant Bakery & Cafe -- and they make a fierce chocolate torte, elaborately layering dense ganache chocolate icing and bubbly cake.

In large bowl, combine stuffing ingredients. Divide about half the stuffing among the three slits. Roll up roast from the long side and tie with butcher's string at two-inch intervals. Drape bacon strips over pork, tucking ends underneath roast. Roast pork, uncovered, at 350°F (180°C) to an internal temperature of 155-160°F (68-71°C), 1½-2 hours. Remove roast from oven. Tent loosely with foil and let rest 10 minutes before slicing. Place remaining stuffing in greased casserole dish; cover and bake for 30 minutes or until heated through. Serve alongside roast with your favourite seasonal vegetables.

Managing your expectations will help you make the most of cosmetic and reconstructive surgery Many people have something about their physical appearance that bothers them. Maybe it’s the line between their eyebrows or the feeling their nose is longer than desired. Both nonsurgical and surgical cosmetic plastic surgery can help people with how they feel about their outward appearance, as long as they have realistic goals and expectations. “Our goal is to make people look better, but still look like themselves, not artificial or overdone,” explains Dr. Gur Balbir Singh M.D.,FRCSC, FACS, who has over 20 years of experience in cosmetic and reconstructive plastic surgery. “We discuss with each patient what their goals and objectives are, and then determine the best way to achieve those results,” adds Dr. Kenneth Murray, MD, FRCS, FACS. “Patients have to understand what can be accomplished, and what can not, as well as the pertinent risks of various procedures.” There are two primary methods in which patients can achieve results. The first utilizes non-invasive or nonsurgical treatments - such as fillers, neurotoxins, chemical peels, or laser resurfacing. The other method includes surgical procedures for facial rejuvenation, breast augmentation, or body contouring and skin tightening procedures. Noninvasive procedures are generally for the treatment of early aging, suggests Dr. Singh, saying, “Neurotoxins, such as Botox, are paralyzing agents ideal for softening early wrinkles. Injectables or fillers, which are used to elevate depressed lines and wrinkles, can be used either by themselves or as an adjunctive treatment. Most nonsurgical or noninvasive procedures are temporary, and may need to be performed two to three times per year.” Other noninvasive treatments performed at Plastic Surgery Associates includes Ultherapy

you which is an ultrasound treatment to restore memory to the skin and underlying tissue support, and helps to re-contour the face. Chemical peels, laser resurfacing, and a full line of cosmetic creams and lotions are available as well to aid in skin rejuvenation. Both doctors caution their patients that sometimes nonsurgical procedures simply cannot produce the desired results that surgery may be able to afford the patient. With time and the effects of gravity, surgical procedures may be a better way to produce the desired results for the patient. Both Dr. Murray and Singh are well versed and highly sought after for their work in Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, including facelifts, eyelid and nasal surgery, breast augmentation and breast lifts, tummy tucks, water assisted liposuction, and fat grafting. When selecting a surgeon to perform a cosmetic procedure, patients should look for appropriate credentialing, such as certification from the Royal College of Physicians & Surgeons of Canada. Both Dr. Singh and Dr. Murray are duly certified by the Royal College of Physicians & Surgeons of Canada, and the Manitoba College of Physicians & Surgeons. They are also members of the Canadian Society for Plastic Surgery and the Canadian Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. Both doctors have been actively involved in the University of Manitoba and in teaching Cosmetic and Reconstructive Plastic Surgery. Finally, patients must be aware that there are risks involved with any procedure, whether it is noninvasive or an actual surgical procedure. It is important that the patients are aware of all the risks involved in the procedure they have chosen, and that they are comfortable with the surgeon they’ve selected to assist them in their rejuvenation process.

Not Business as Usual! Sarah’s approach to Anthoney’s hair was to give him a cut that can be styled for both business and casual wear. The Mad Men influence to the finish of the hair lends itself to a classic feel and ease of styling. The short tapered sides help to slim and elongate the face, while the top is left fuller and leaves options for styling. The finish is with Aveda’s Men’s Grooming Clay, which gives a dryer finish and great hold without weighing down the hair. Fall is all about texture and colour – mix and match to achieve creative but classy looks that will take you into the cooler weather. Whereas summer hair trends leaned towards a softer look and feel, this fall you can expect hair to take a more structured turn. Pastel colours are also still current and fun for the upcoming season, with hues like baby pink, icy blue, mint green and soft lavender taking center stage. The look here was created by curling the hair all over with a one-inch curling iron, and then gathering the bottom half of the hair into a low ponytail, which was teased until full and textured. The top half was then teased for volume and smoothed back into the same ponytail, with a small piece of hair wrapping around the tie. Hair spray and generous amounts of Unite Expanda Dust Volumizing Powder keep the look together. STEREO Reviewed by Randal McIlroy David Bowie The Next Day (ISO/Sony) Like James Bond in Skyfall, David Bowie could have seen his return hailed too loudly for simply happening. The Next Day is a genuinely thrilling surprise after years of silence and several unprepossessing records. “Where are We Now?” is wistful and handsome for the first single, but the other songs are lean, sinewy, uncluttered and urgent, with rarely more than a huffing baritone saxophone to augment guitars, bass and drums. For all the references to his nights of experimentation in Berlin, this is a set more about impact and immediacy – “The Stars (Are Out Tonight)” hits especially hard – than sonic intrigue. Rock’s most alert writer is back and healthy, however; so don’t expect the intrigue to end.

Vows Kimbra (Warner Bros.) Most modern soul singing is hard to love – belting it to the bleachers doesn’t call for the caress – but the best ones find their voice on the sly. New Zealand’s Kimbra Lee Johnson stopped more than a few hearts recently with her cameo in Gotye’s insinuating “Somebody that I Used to Know.” Her first solo set is busy and beguiling, with big drums and keyboards leavened by strings and sudden left turns, but she’s undaunted by the instrumental muscle of “Sally, I Can See You,” and the reason why is found early in “Cameo Lover” – here’s a smart and fearless young talent trained on Motown, where nothing could daunt the right voice. She’s only 23; expect more.

Pet Shop Boys Electric (X2/Sony) Following a ballet score, a rarities collection and a presumably healthy period of middle-age review in song, Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe are reinvigorated for the dance floor, wits and hips intact. “Love is a Bourgeois Construct” – “So I’ve given up on the bourgeoisie,” Tennant sings – mixes choral voices and a quote from 17th Century composer Henry Purcell, but analyzing such cleverness can wait until after the dance.

It’s Monday morning, and Colleen Kerrigan wakes up feeling really rough, and not for the first time. Yet another near-empty bottle of vodka is a clue to the previous night, but Colleen refuses to acknowledge its significance as she attempts to get through her day. Lauren B. Davis has written a powerful, compassionate, and darkly funny story of addiction, denial, and self-deceit - a story as much about the impact of family as the unexpected generosity of strangers.

Emancipation Day (Doubleday Canada) by Wayne Grady

Non-fiction writer and prize-winning translator Wayne Grady tries his hand at fiction with his first novel and comes up with a winner. It’s World War II, and charming, fair-skinned, moody Navy musician Jackson Lewis is stationed in Newfoundland. Jack captures the heart of Vivian, who’s never left the Rock, but when the two marry and return to Jack’s hometown of Windsor, Vivian discovers Jack is not the man he pretends to be. A compelling story about race relations, fathers and sons, and passing in life.

Take Time To Live Well Fall is a busy time of year. Children and parents are bustling to get ready for back to school, autumn extracurricular activities begin again, summer clothes get packed away, while warmer gear replaces it. And it all has to get done with less daylight. As the leaves turn a different hue, sometimes we’re left to wonder, “Where did the time go?” Looking back over the summer, many of us will say, “I wish I could go back and take time to enjoy my family more; have fun with my friends more; indulge in hobbies and interests more; focus on my health and wellbeing more. I wish I could go back and take time to live well.” “Easier said than done,” states Cindy Dayman, owner of Take Time Home Cleaning. “Where do I find this TIME. We are all so busy - jobs, meetings, fundraisers, children’s activities day after day.”

Ultimate Urban Oasis B y R ita van L eeuwen

P hotography: M ike S anders

“Rome wasn’t built in a day,” my father would always say whenever I embarked on a new project. My dad knows me well, particularly after watching me rush headlong into many so endeavours throughout my life. For the past three years, I’ve had to constantly keep that wise old adage in mind as plans for my home renovations unfolded – both indoors and out. In 2010 (four bidding wars ago), I finally found a place in the city with great bones that I hoped to renovate over time. And it wasn’t just the inside of the home that offered great potential. The property itself was perfect for what I had in mind – developing my own ultimate urban oasis. Plans for my outdoor retreat included a pool and this yard had exactly what was needed to make that happen. In fact, the ample sized backyard was a blank slate just waiting for a good landscape design. It was also easily accessible from the back lane, which would make it possible for the installers to bring in the necessary excavation equipment. After getting a few quotes, I opted to work with Krevco – a well-known pool company with a longstanding rock solid reputation in Manitoba. Both Don Carson (Krevco owner) and John Bellino (Store Manager) were integral to the

process, making the entire sales and installation experience as pleasant, efficient and seamless as possible. First, John met me on site, where he assessed my space and discussed the various pool systems available, including a salt water system. (I was initially interested in a salt water system). In the end, the Nature2 water purifying system appealed to me most. Pool water purifiers such as the Nature2 bring all the sanitizing benefits of mineral technology to your pool, cutting chlorine requirements, reducing the potential for skin and eye irritation, and unpleasant odours. In fact, pool owners enjoy its natural water conditioning capabilities and stabilizing affect on the PH balance. The Nature2 provides cleaner, clearer water with less chlorine, working automatically with the pool filtration system. This choice made sense to me. Next, John talked about the pool size and style possibilities, along with options and upgrades that might be of interest. He also explained the merits of three different heating systems for the pool – solar, gas or electric heat pump. (Although I was originally leaning towards solar heating, I went with the gas heater, which is considered the most effective for our climate.) For style / model, I settled on the Venetian, sized at 32 feet long by 16 feet wide by 8 feet deep, and equipped with a diving board, a slide and six-foot wide side steps complete with a centre handrail. I opted for the stamped Autumn 2013 | STYLE MANITOBA | 47

liner. (Still don’t know how the last guy got out of the pool without messing up the work!) Mine was a fairly standard pool installation with easy access to the yard, and not many extras. If all the pieces were in place, including permits, a similar installation could potentially be completed from start to finish in as little as 10 days (weather permitting). Personally, I am still awed that such a big job was completed in such a small amount of time. The Venetian pool style and size worked well for my particular property, leaving me with enough yard space for future landscaping considerations. I quickly realized that I did not want to deal with grass cutting on that side of the yard, and for safety reasons, also wanted to close it off without obscuring the view.

concrete collar to surround the pool (available in a variety of colours and patterns). Selecting a liner for the pool was somewhat challenging (there were so many options to choose from, it took me a couple days to make up my mind), but once my decision was made, everything fell into place. Krevco came up with CAD drawings, allowing me to visualize exactly how the yard would look once the pool was installed. This was a helpful

48 | STYLE MANITOBA | Autumn 2013

tool, both at the time and for future landscape design purposes as well. Krevco pulled the necessary permits, arranged gas and electric inspections and work as required, advised me of legal fence requirements and then commenced with excavation. Installation followed in several steps and was completed by a professional and courteous crew. I marvelled at how perfectly they formed the bottom of the pool before installing the

For developing the landscape design further, I turned to Vern and Nolan Kroeker of Ross Creek Landscaping. Using Barkman products, the Kroekers installed a retaining wall and a raised garden bed behind the pool, equipping it with an underground irrigation system. Plantings included hydrangeas, Engelmann’s ivy, various lilies, tall prairie grass and several perennial shrubs. In full bloom, the garden is stunning indeed! River stone was laid between the retaining wall and the head of the pool and down both sides. Ross Creek also installed decking, which butts up to the stamped concrete collar along the side and at the foot of the pool, providing two

separate lounging areas, along with a nice transition from concrete to wood. Attractive glass fencing from Windeck Ltd was later installed to separate the pool area from the other side of the yard.

attractive part of the overall scheme. It seemed to be a jumping off point for the next phase of my urban oasis. The garage wall directly faces the patio area, where I was planning to have a pergola built.

This summer, the landscape design evolved further. It was time to pay attention to the other side of the yard and somehow tie the two sides together in a cohesive design.

After talking to Grant Jehle at Fort Distributors and viewing the Easyrock products available through his company, I decided to create a feature wall with Easyrock’s Dry Stack in Midnight Black. (Easyrock has many stone looks and colours to choose from).

Every time I opened my back door, I pondered over the stucco garage wall facing the house and what could be done to turn it into an

Rob Patterson of RMP Carpentry & Renovations installed the product, creating a stunning feature wall that now serves as a backdrop for both the main seating area on the poolside and behind the firepit. Contemporary lighting fixtures were also installed, injecting an extra touch of drama to the wall at night. In fact, it’s so dramatic, I can’t stop looking at it. I often go outside in the evening and flip the light on just to marvel at how authentic looking Easyrock is, and how it has influenced the overall look of my urban oasis. “The product was excellent to work with,” enthuses Rob Patterson. “I can’t believe how realistic this product looks, how easy it is to install and what a dramatic difference it has made to this space. The stucco was an eyesore – this Easyrock has provided an absolutely incredible transformation. I would definitely recommend this product to others.” I also turned to Rob at RMP Carpentry for constructing the pergola. A skilled carpenter, he worked from a picture to create it. Within days, the “contemporary meets rustic” structure was up. Stain was chosen to play off the

colours in the Easyrock panels, tying the feature wall and pergola together. And it didn’t end there. Rob went on to develop a firepit area, creating a base with charcoal crushed granite stone, again picking up tones from the Easyrock panels. Earlier in the season, he had added solid hand-built lattice to the top of an existing fence and built raised wooden garden beds for my veggies and herbs. (My mini Dachshund would dig up any ground level beds!) Thanks to Rob Patterson and my neighbour, firefighter Luc Caron, on the other side of the yard, the broken down fence we once shared has been replaced with a new one. (Just in time for a photo shoot!) Now that both sides of the yard are nearly complete, dressing it up was at the top of my list. A chic weather resistant sectional and coffee table from Krevco’s Protégé line now graces the lounging area beside the pool, adding a spa-like ambience to my ultimate urban oasis. Next year, other furnishings will be added. After featuring so many landscape designs over the years in Style Manitoba, I had a fairly good idea of what I wanted for my own outdoor space. And it was gratifying to actually work on a design for my own place. Now, with the fire crackling at night against the feature wall and lights gleaming on the water in my lovely pool, it’s always a pleasure to sit outdoors – no matter what side of the yard I happen to be on.

Endless possibilities By Leigh Patterson The sky’s the limit as far as residential landscaping goes, but it takes the right expertise to bring ideas, material and people down to earth and make it all happen. With a total of 22 years of landscaping experience under his belt, Jason Janoske has been making dreams happen for his clients as owner of award-winning Natural Impressions Landscaping since 2000. Janoske and his core team of knowledgeable trained and courteous employees have the capacity for any custom landscape design and build services imaginable. Natural Impressions can provide decking, fencing, patios, walkways, retaining walls, planting, specialty gardens, irrigation, water features, ponds, landscape lighting and more for yards of all shapes and sizes.

50 | STYLE MANITOBA | Autumn 2013

“We are a one-stop shop,” Janoske says. “We’re the tree guy, the fencing guy, the driveway guy… because we can do it all, we can make the decision process easier for our clients,” he adds. Natural Impressions can design and install landscaping in a broad range of styles, from formal English gardens to Asian-inspired and modern settings and beyond. “It all depends on what our clients want, and we give them as much opportunity to provide their insights as possible,” Janoske says. Before a project gets underway, Janoske conducts one or two onsite visits to evaluate the client’s lifestyle and intended use of the yard. “Do they like to garden? Do they entertain? Do they have young children or pets? These kinds of

questions help us ensure we don’t overbuild or underbuild the yard,” Janoske explains.

A set of homeowners on Winnipeg’s South Drive enlisted Natural Impressions to completely landscape their backyard riverbank property, which has a significant slope down to the Red River. The clients desired a multi-level seating

“We put more of the ‘wow factor’ plants closer to the pond and seating areas,” Janoske explains. “Closer to the river we used plantings that would create a more natural look.” Where possible, Janoske prefers to use native plants in landscaping projects because they look good, thrive in our climate and are low maintenance: saving clients money and work in the long run. He also believes in sourcing his plants and building materials from local suppliers. Janoske is often asked to include personal and meaningful items into his landscape designs and enjoys finding creative ways to do so. In this yard, a large facial sculpture was added next to the pond at the homeowners’ request. The sculpture satisfies both an aesthetic and functional purpose: it hides the pond’s electrical wiring. An existing concrete couch became a focal point once Natural Impressions added a charming pathway to that side of the yard. For a Pritchard Farm area couple who desired a natural feel in their yard, Natural Impressions added a deep koi pond and surrounded it with junipers, mugo pine and perennials like black-eyed Susans and grasses for year-round colour. The couple loves to garden, so the addition of raised beds allows them to putter. Colorado spruce trees

were added as the backdrop and fruit-bearing trees like currants and Saskatoons were incorporated for a landscape suited more to a cottage than a city lot. With a reputation grounded in excellence, and a strong rapport with clients and suppliers, Natural Impressions continues to be the landscaper of choice for many Manitoba homeowners. Website: www.natural-impressions.ca

Impressions crew could begin to build stone decks and stairs, and a retaining wall. Boulders were brought in from the Kenora area to add texture and soften the hardscaping. A pond was installed near the main patio area and the surrounding boulder-filled beds were planted with low-lying shrubs and a variety of perennials, including grasses. The magnificent timber frame residence set against a backdrop of mature pines and situated on a gentle hill could be a scene out of the Canadian Rockies. In fact, this property, beautifully landscaped by Galay Landscaping & Irrigation, is found closer to home: near the Pine Ridge Golf Course north of Winnipeg.

Taking yards to new heights By Leigh Patterson

It’s just one example of the masterful way Galay Landscaping & Irrigation owner Gordon Galay and his award-winning team of landscape professionals made these clients’ vision a reality. In this case, the homeowners were former Galay Landscaping clients who were building their dream home. Once again, they sought the company’s expertise and ability to provide the full service landscaping and irrigation services they needed for their new project. “The clients brought us in early in the homebuilding process,” says Galay, who started Galay Landscaping & Irrigation in 2003. Galay has grown the company in the last decade thanks to a word-of-mouth reputation for quality, imagination and client-centered care. In addition to his awards through Landscape Manitoba, Galay was a 2012 BBB Torch Award finalist with an A+ rating. As with many residential landscaping projects, Galay started out with a basic lot survey and then used 3D computer-aided design to come up with a two-phase landscape plan for the homeowners. “We did seven modifications to the design before we settled on one,” Galay says. “I noted what appealed to them and made their eyes light up. They had ideas about what they

wanted; they just needed help bringing it together. It was a team effort.”

of fill were brought in to build up the swampy area, and many small dead trees removed.

Phase one began with establishing a solid underpinning for the hardscaping and landscaping to follow. Two hundred truckloads

“We took advantage of naturally occurring elevations and created more where required,” Galay says. “This helped achieve the rugged look the clients desired.” One of the homeowners hails from Pine Falls, so Galay arranged to have ten loads of natural boulders hauled from that area to incorporate throughout the property and to further the concept of home and place.

“A year or two from now the kids can enjoy picking them,” Galay says. Full-scale irrigation and lighting is planned next year, but for now this busy family has large, yet surprisingly low maintenance areas for fun and relaxation. “We strived to recreate nature at its finest and to get that rugged, beautiful look,” Galay says. “The homeowner told me it reminded her of Banff. It was rewarding to be able to create that environment for her, and to complement their dream home.” www.galaylandscaping.com

“There is a lot of stonework inside the home, so we tried to bring some of that to the outdoors as well,” Galay explains. A home of this size requires large entertaining areas to match. “The clients wanted a deck area at the back as well as a patio,” Galay notes. “We opted to build a raised stone patio and added a composite deck on top of that.” Galay’s team also installed a 1,100-square-foot patio that can be accessed from the walkout basement. From this lower level patio, a winding stone slab pathway gradually rises up to meet the upper patio and deck areas. A

retaining wall/planter and several large boulders set along the pathway soften the transition. In the front, Galay created a looped driveway. Rather than make traditional stairs leading from the driveway to the front entrance, Galay opted for a series of stretched patio-type “landings.” “These become gathering spots,” Galay says. “I find that if you create that space, people will linger more as they are arriving or leaving. I like creating areas of interest to explore.” Since the property was already well treed, Galay strategically added a few more, along with a number of bigger shrubs like the false spirea in the front planter. Where possible, he chose deer-resistant plants and those that enhanced the overall theme. The landscaper built contoured beds filled with chocolatecoloured mulch to anchor the perennials and soften the stonework. Galay admits he is not timid or shy with his plantings, and likes to incorporate edible varieties in landscaping projects when he can. In this case, he included Saskatoon, cherry, raspberry and strawberry shrubs and plants.

Backyard solutions B y L eigh P atterson

As more and more Manitoba homeowners join the trend of turning backyards into urban retreats, they also have higher expectations of quality and function. After all, it is a longterm investment in a relaxing and healthy lifestyle, so they want the details taken care of professionally. Given our short outdoor season, they want the job done quickly, too. That’s why many clients have turned to Samson Pools to provide the full backyard services and solutions they are seeking. “We can do complete pool installations, landscaping, outdoor patios and more,” says Jonathan Kreviazuk, co-owner of Samson Pools. “We’ve done everything from simple pool installations all the way to designing and building custom pools complete with concrete and rock waterfalls.” As the largest water feature and obvious focal point in the yard, when it comes to inground pools, “we address our clients’ main concerns, namely appearance, longevity of the pool structure, and safety,” Kreviazuk says. The sky’s the limit when it comes to how a pool looks. Most Samson Pool clients opt for modern streamlined or organic shapes. Stamped concrete pool decks and decorative edges are in vogue, as are colour lighting systems, deck jets and slides, Samson notes.

Samson Pools added a large, sturdy curved resin slide to a recent pool installation. At 14’ long and 8 1/2 ‘ tall, it certainly makes a splash for entertainment value alone. “The resin stands up well to the elements and is a great improvement over the traditional aluminum slides,” Kreviazuk says. Since water can be pumped up from the pool and allowed

to cascade down the slide, it serves doubleduty as a water feature by adding the sound of flowing water. For another project, Samson Pools incorporated a set of vinyl-covered stairs in one end of the pool. The vinyl surface was extended to cover the entire shallow end for an added measure of safety. Automatic pool covers are another way to provide a maintenance- and worry-free backyard pool experience. “With the touch of a button, the cover rolls out over the pool in 30 seconds,” Kreviazuk says. “This keeps the pool clean, reduces chemical use and heat loss to save on pool maintenance costs.” The pool covers are strong and safe enough to walk on, and have a passwordprotected keypad so children can’t open up the cover themselves. Once a client has made a commitment to installing a backyard pool or starting a renovation, Samson Pools will make it happen. With a growing reputation for responsive customer service, excellent warranty program and quality workmanship, Samson Pools ensures that their clients will enjoy a beautiful, high-end retreat customized to fit their life and style. www.samsonpools.ca Autumn 2013 | STYLE MANITOBA | 55

outdoor livi n g Fall Is Aflame Even though the sun sets earlier every evening as we move into fall, the pleasure of outdoor living doesn’t have to fade with it. The warmth and glow of an exterior fireplace from Classic Fireplaces can keep you cozy while extending your patio lifestyle. Fire bowls continue to be a hot trend moving into this season. Bola by Kingsman, a madein-Manitoba product, is the perfect way to enhance the enjoyment of any outdoor space. Complete with choice of lava rocks, decorative ember glass in four colours, or decorative stones in shades of gray, units are fuelled by either natural gas or propane and are ideally suited for use on a wood deck or patio. The concrete fire bowl is available in textured black or smooth grey to match any exterior décor. For a more modern style, a linear patio flame is a truly unique option that adds a little excitement to any backyard. Classic Fireplaces also offers stainless steel fire tables, with granite-like tops, or bronze rubbed metal tables with slate tops from high-quality brands, such as Kingsman and Napoleon.

Classic Fireplaces offers numerous other outdoor patio heaters, either freestanding or tabletop, wood burning firepits, gourmet grills

by Napoleon, and water features in various styles and sizes at their showroom in St. Boniface.

Budget is what holds many people back from actually constructing their perfect space. “People think it’s going to cost them a small fortune, but you can create a nice space for less

than you think. Don’t be scared of price. Your dream backyard is not out of reach.”

Design A Dream The owners of this classic River Heights home wanted to expand their patio from 200 square feet to 600, but without throwing away the original brick work. Doug Loeppky, owner of Hardscapes Inc., decided that creating contrast between the stone colours would allow the old to flow with the new, generating an interesting setting. “Every backyard has a personality and I design for that space,” explains Loeppky, who not only creates all the designs in-house, but also consults clients, is on site during construction, and is available for any follow-up. “I’m on a project from concept to finish.” Hardscapes Inc. is committed to the highest standards of customer service and support, listening to their client’s needs. Loeppky states they usually ask people what is most important to them in their outdoor area - do you want more patio space, or planters? Do you host a crowd or will it be just for you? “Asking about their use of space helps me design off that,” he says, adding they are also dedicated to using high-quality, local products like Barkman Concrete for their patios, driveways, walking paths, and walls.

South Winnipeg’s Bridgewater community continues to set the bar higher. Consider that the neighbourhood is the fastest growing new development in the city, and for many reasons. “As of July 2013, a total of 233 single-family construction permits have been taken out by Bridgwater builders, which is 123 permits more than the second place development,” says Manitoba Housing’s Director of Land Development, Dwayne Rewniak. “Manitoba Housing anticipates that Bridgwater will finish 2013 with approximately 380 permits, which would be on par with 2012’s performance.”

A Bridge to Successful Living By Kelly Gray

Today, this rapid growth has pushed Bridgwater Forest to a point near completion with over 1000 single-family lots sold; the majority of these now have completed homes. According to Rewniak, Manitoba Housing expects Bridgwater Forest will be built out by the end of 2014. Indeed, the development of the Bridgwater neighbourhoods was initially projected to be a 20 to 25 year project, and is now five years ahead of schedule. At the current pace of development, it is now likely that all of its communities could be serviced by as early as 2018 and sold by 2021.

Bridgwater Trails is the third of the Bridgwater communities. Begun this spring with servicing of the first phase, the initial section will offer 265 single-family lots and a number of multi-family parcels, which may be made available to designated builders in late 2013 or early 2014. At the heart of it all is Bridgwater Centre’s vibrant business, commercial and residential hub. Rewniak reports that Bridgwater Centre is set to begin construction as early as this fall.

“Manitoba Housing has awarded a number of land parcels in Bridgwater Centre and is currently negotiating purchase agreements with the successful proponents,” he says, adding that at the heart of Bridgwater Centre will be Centre Street, featuring a unique blend of shops, restaurants, business and residential units. “Surrounding Centre Street will be clusters of apartments and townhomes, along with four lakes, parks and trails. Bridgwater Centre will be designed with pedestrians in mind, with primary access to the shops and restaurants directly from the sidewalks of Centre Street. Parking will be easily accessible, but situated to promote a pedestrian-friendly environment.” Key points of design are behind the public acceptance and rapid growth of the community. For example, Bridgwater has been designed to be a walkable community and will feature over 80 kilometres of planned pathways and sidewalks that interconnect and converge at the town centre. Bridgwater also features architectural guidelines where each street is important and every home complements one another.

“Our architectural guidelines ensure that there will be a variety of house designs throughout and our recessed garages prevent garage dominated streets, creating a more neighbourhood friendly streetscape,” he says. Diversity of housing in Bridgwater is important and that is why single-family lots include everything from small lots located on back lanes, to larger amenity lots located on forest and lakes, to visitable homes with easy access due to no front steps. In addition, the community’s multi-family projects include everything from townhome and apartment condominiums to Bridgwater’s first pure rental project, which will be completing construction in 2014. A total of 26 new showhomes will be opening up in Phase 2 of Bridgwater Lakes this September, and will be featured in the upcoming Fall Parade of Homes. They are located on Lake Bend Road and Eagleview Road, and include everything from custom-built showhomes on walkout lots on the lake, visitable showhomes on laneless lots and showhomes on 36-foot wide lots with back lanes.

“The majority of the construction activity is occurring in our second residential neighbourhood, Bridgwater Lakes. Bridgwater Lakes is being developed in four phases and will contain about 1,190 single-family homes upon completion. Fifty percent of the lots in Bridgwater Lakes will be engineered to allow for visitable housing,“ says Rewniak, noting that there are currently over 200 occupied homes in the area, with hundreds more under construction. All four phases of the neighbourhood will be completely serviced by this fall.”

Talking Transitions Transitional design is the marriage of contemporary and traditional finishes, material, and furniture that will result in a classic, timeless design. Southwynn Homes’ walkout bungalow in Bridgewater Lakes ensures that whoever lives there, will love it forever. The palette of a transitional home relies on neutral colour to evoke a clean atmosphere, with added elements of dark browns or grays to add depth to the achromatic tones. Throughout most of the first floor you will find wave patterned light oak flooring, gray tile surrounding the great room fireplace, as well as the kitchen backsplash, and white maple cabinetry offset by an island of dark smoke maple. The large barrel ceiling which runs across the kitchen/dining room/great room, offers an expansive feel, as do the large windows and access points on to the deck off the kitchen and the fully landscaped yard. Along with two bedrooms on the upper level, the master bedroom features a large ensuite with custom glass shower and jetted tub, both

outfitted with brown ceramic ribbon tiles to balance the light cabinetry and flooring. A main floor laundry and a full bathroom featuring a surround tub offer stylish convenience.

bedrooms, a full bathroom, flex room, and a unique wine cellar with leather tiled flooring, a modern twist on a traditional space.

Try Something New This fall, Arlt Homes baulks at cookie cutter design, and tries something a little different with their two Parade of Homes showpieces. While the exterior of 162 Lakebend Road conforms to the traditional styling of Bridgwater Lake, the interior blends in more contemporary elements. It starts with the incorporation of natural tone wooden accents; unique barn board flooring; while LED accent light fixtures in the foyer and behind select shelves highlight a more modern air. The large kitchen features cherrywood cabinetry, high-quality appliances, and a standout backsplash of mosaic tile in mother of pearl, mixed with glass and marble. The rest of the main floor boasts a great room, master bedroom, and additional bedroom. The fully finished lower level of the walkout bungalow features three additional bedrooms, full bathroom, media area and bar with custom cabinetry and seating. Cork flooring runs throughout to keep the space warm.

The house in Sage Creek is a new style for the homebuilders. With mid-century modern materials and accents, the house will feel like it has a little history to it, yet with all the modern elements and technology people expect. “It’s very retro inspired,” says Jason Arlt. “Black and white, gray, it’s been done. This house has

more earth tones, more warmth and authentic to the time. Yet, it’s still stylish and practical for families to live in.” A large kitchen, sunroom, and a massive deck with a view of the lake are just some of the elements that make this showhome a new must-see. Autumn 2013 | STYLE MANITOBA | 65

Living It Up in East St. Paul An East St. Paul postal code has never looked so good. This is the message Nolan Ploegman wants to deliver about Countryside Crossing, the newest community located in East St. Paul, but inside what most would consider city limits. Ploegman is the Land Development Manager for Countryside Crossing, and President of Project Development with Concord Projects Ltd. “You can buy a lot today and build tomorrow in Phase 1 or secure a lot in the soon-tobe-released Phase 2,” he says. Phase 1 of Countryside Crossing is over 75 percent sold and contractors are nearly completed the infrastructure for Phase 2, a section that will mirror the successful initial offering with walkout basements, an active living trail along the creek, and properties backing onto the park. “There will be four showhomes ready to go for the Parade of Homes (September 14 to October 6). These will showcase our four premier builders: Irwin Homes, Maric Homes, K. Streu Homes, and Warkentin Homes,” says Ploegman, noting that people are not limited to buying builder lots. Purchasers

have the freedom to build themselves or choose their own builder. Indeed, this makes Countryside Crossing unique among new home communities. Residential lots are marketed by Wayne and Mark Penner at Royal Le Page Prime Real Estate. Lots are fully serviced and amply sized, with minimum 70-foot frontages. This facilitates the inclusion of larger

garages, backyards, and other amenities into homeowner’s plans. “Most people still can’t believe Countryside Crossing is in East St. Paul. It is only 10 minutes from Portage and Main by car, and 20 minutes by bus,” he says, inviting people to come see what all the fuss is about.

homes and neighbourhoods

Life with a View Living looks a lot better with a nice view, and both of Warkentin Custom Homes’ fall Parade of Homes feature just that. Warkentin’s display home at 10 Willowside Bend in East St. Paul’s Countryside Crossing takes full advantage of the surrounding landscape, offering large south facing windows looking over the water and walking path. The airy atmosphere of this 2,059-squarefoot home continues with a large foyer, open concept living room featuring a three-sided gas fireplace, a kitchen with rich walnut cabinets, quartz countertops, professional grade fixtures, and light wide plank oak flooring. The master bedroom hosts an ensuite with a freestanding soaker tub, double sink, and glass shower. Two more bedrooms, and a mudroom round out the first floor features. The fully finished lower level houses two additional bedrooms, open space for an entertainment area, exercise space, and walk-up bar. Much like Willowside, Warkentin’s showhome at 5 Campbell Road in Stone Ridge Meadows boasts numerous windows to take advantage of

the surrounding green space and mature trees in Stonewall’s development. While the bungalow is 1,890 square feet, it features an entertainer’s kitchen with a large granite topped island, floor to ceiling tiled entertainment unit, and three bedrooms. The

master bedroom ensuite is also substantial, offering a six-foot tub, large shower with custom tile, and ample windows in order to soak up the country life while soaking cares away.

Woods and Wow While it’s unusual for a homebuilder to have their client bring their own design to them, it’s not necessarily unwelcome. Scott and Karen Magnusson had been working on the plans for their “wow factor” home for some time, and took the concept to K. Streu Homes. “I knew after our first meeting that Kurt Streu was the right guy to build our dream home... he turned it into a great experience,” says Magnusson, who built the home’s cabinetry. Anyone who steps foot into this 2,000+ squarefoot home will instantly know both K. Streu Homes and Magnusson have a hand for high quality craftsmanship. The great room’s 10-foot long credenza is the first example of this, but it’s the kitchen that will drop jaws. The four-foot-wide blocks of high-gloss wenge cabinets are fully motorized, allowing the family to simply tap a door and have it open. With over 250-feet of LED strip lighting, lights are inset in every cabinet and drawer, as well as the cloud above the 10 foot island, which features a solid slab of quartz for the counter, inset Kohler Stages sink, and a quartz footrest making seating more comfortable.

The ensuite bathroom continues with the theme, boasting a nine-foot long vanity, featuring double sinks and chrome handles, as well as a corner soaker tub that incorporates the same wood on the face, and quartz on the deck.

K. Streu Homes has an established reputation for innovative and distinctive features. Further examples of this can be seen at 6 Willowside Bend in Countryside Crossing during the fall Parade of Homes.

Pointe Hébert, a Downtown Gem BIG DEMAND FOR THIS NEIGHBOURHOOD OF CUSTOM HOMES

By Lynne Mustard

Esplanade Riel

After just three months on the market, the Phase One home sites of Pointe Hébert are virtually all spoken for, and the remaining lots not likely to last long. A wait-list is now developing for Phase Two, which will open this fall. It seems this charming pocket neighbourhood on Rue Messager, just off Taché has struck a chord with urbanites who want to custom build downtown. Ravi Joshi, Project Manager for developer Qualico Communities, advises that Phase 2 will offer just 10 more home sites. He attributes the high degree of interest in Pointe Hébert to a number of factors. First is the opportunity to have a custombuilt home in old St.Boniface with its historical cachet, the French Quarter on Provencher and wonderful proximity to the Forks and downtown. “The view across the river is phenomenal, Joshi states, “and entertainment, sports, and shopping are all so accessible.”

Ultimately, there will be 33 singlefamily home sites in Pointe Hébert, featuring extraordinary homes built by three of Winnipeg’s most prominent custom homebuilders: Traditional home style example

“Qualico has a very rich and vibrant vision for this neighbourhood, which is setting a benchmark in Winnipeg for the redevelopment of infill homes,” states Emeka Nadi, Principal of Nadi Design & Development. He continues, “Pointe Hébert has a very specific architectural agenda, which is to represent the finest in both modern and traditional architectural styles. Therefore, it will be an eclectic collection of outstanding homes, yet the overall neighbourhood will have a magnificent, cohesive look.” The quality of the development and diversity in design means that home designs cannot be approved in isolation. Each proposed custom design is considered in the context of a virtual streetscape of Pointe Hébert, where it is measured against its peers to ensure a visual accord.

He adds, “Of course, each home will have all the creature comforts a homeowner might want, and each design will be one-of-a-kind.” Lots in Point Hébert are 32 to 34 feet wide and approximately 122 feet deep. Project Manager Joshi says proposed home designs range from 1200 to just over 1900 square feet, with three bedrooms and a finished lower level. All of the home sites have back lane access and double garages, which must, according to the architectural guidelines, reflect the architectural style of the home. Joshi adds that buyers have the further freedom to design their outdoor living spaces. “Some people are doing a courtyard between the home and garage, with a connector that houses a

mudroom or breezeway. Those who love gardening are including several garden areas throughout their property. We’re also seeing rooftop decks being incorporated; urban living optimized!” Nnadi praises the collaborative process between all parties involved. “The developer, builders and us, as the design consultant, all came together early to discuss what might be possible.” Now the homebuyers are being included in the collaborative process and it’s yielding “exceptional results”, Nnadi claims. This new neighbourhood in old St. Boniface is clearly a gem in the making, but with so few lots available, only early buyers will get the opportunity to call it home.

Contemporary home style example

Nnadi explains that harmony is in the details; modern designed homes will have hints of the traditional and the more traditional-style homes will have modern touches or contemporary elements. These subtle visual clues will draw the streetscape together.

“There’s lots of excitement from folks looking to buy,” he adds. “Their enthusiasm and energy is communicating to the custom builders who are doing amazing home designs here.”

“Oak Bluff West is country and proud of it,” says Eric Vogan, Vice President, Qualico Communities. “The place has that wonderful feeling of relaxation that you get with country living but it’s located just off the Perimeter where McGillivray Boulevard meets Highway 2, for quick and easy access to the city.” He adds that Oak Bluff is a wellestablished community with a Kindergarten to Grade 8 school and a Recreation Centre. The village also boasts a Tim Hortons, service stations, restaurants, a Credit Union and the post office. Just 10 minutes down McGillivray is Kenaston Common, one of the largest retail centres in Winnipeg.

The strong appeal of Oak Bluff West has provided plenty of opportunity for the seven accomplished builders at work in the development: Paradigm, Ventura, Somerville,

Artista, Randall, Parkhill and Sterling Homes. “The builders have captured the buyers’ imagination, providing gracious living in spacious homes that offer all the latest in home design but with that little bit extra that Oak Bluff West affords,” Vogan declares. “There are several showhomes open that demonstrate both the quality and creativity of the builders.” Lots are wider here, averaging from 70 to 80 feet and this allows for more: more house, more garage and with 10 foot side yards, more privacy. Builders are making the most of the space. The homes have a large presence; rooms are generously proportioned with lots of glass to

take advantage of the light and expansive views. High ceilings and oversize windows in finished lower levels allow for good flexibility in room design and function: from media or entertainment rooms to extra bedrooms or play space for children. Many garages are 24 feet by 24 feet but some are even bigger to accommodate larger vehicles. Vogan says others have extra depth to incorporate workshops, hobby space or tandem bays for equipment, trailers or ‘toys’ such as ATVs or snowmobiles. Bungalow condominiums from about 1400 to 1600 square feet are another home option that is on offer this fall in Oak Bluff West.

Vogan observes that a mixed demographic of people is attracted to Oak Bluff West, from young professionals to families to empty nesters. Another draw may be the neighbourhood’s architectural guidelines, which not only help create a pleasing cohesiveness to the new neighbourhood’s look and feel, but over time, will help maintain property values. Wetlands, Parks and Trails There are many features to the new neighbourhood that aren’t yet apparent. Vogan describes a series of wetlands with lakes surrounded by native prairie grasses, areas of park or public reserve, as well as a network of trails that will eventually wind through the new neighbourhood from the school on its northern edge to the village and Recreation Centre in the south. He also comments on the high degree of finish that will be prevalent throughout Oak Bluff West, from its entrance feature, to the fencing, to details of home design, to the wetlands and trail network. “There’s a warm sense of welcome in this community; the neighbours are among the friendliest folks you’ll find. There’s also pride in what they have here, rightly so, and we want to ensure we do a good job in Oak Bluff West, in every aspect, so that we help continue that country quality of life.”

homes and neighbourhoods

“So you have the city, without having to live in the city. That’s a very attractive prospect for many people,” Vogan asserts. He adds that lots are reasonably priced and Oak Bluff has lower tax rates than the city. All of this provides home shoppers with an attractive alternative to the smaller lots with higher prices found in Winnipeg’s new, southwest neighbourhoods.

New Path for StreetSide StreetSide Developments is a name most known for their work delivering quality condominium apartments and townhomes throughout Winnipeg. Over the years, StreetSide has become the one to watch for properties that offer innovation, location and affordability. Now, the company has stepped it up a notch with Homes by StreetSide, a 22 single-family house venture they are undertaking in Royalwood along Tascona and John Bruce Roads. This limited collection of thoughtfully designed single-family residences represent the best of both worlds – a brand new home with the many benefits of the already established and highly regarded family-friendly community of Royalwood. Currently, StreetSide has six homes under construction and near completion, and have just opened their designer display home.

Indeed, many homes feature expansive yards with mature trees that are nearly impossible to find in new developments. With the privacy of a large yard and plenty of opportunity for future ideas such as a pool, skating rink, or play structures, it’s an entertainer’s dream. Lot sizes

“This has allowed many homes to have full depth, rear yard windows to increase use and livability of basement spaces,” he says, adding that front landscaping and finished driveways are included in the first phase of homes. Homes by StreetSide also combine value with luxury. With upgraded exteriors and modern elevations, the look and feel of a custom home is yours without the added expense. Functional floor plans have also been carefully designed to maximize space, and the oversized lower level windows let in so much light, you might not even believe you’re in a basement. Featuring a combination of bungalow and two-storey homes with varying exteriors, Homes by StreetSide plans range in size from 1400 to 2100 square feet, and offer the lifestyle choice of two or three bedrooms.

Within the group, StreetSide is offering four unique floor plans. ‘Bruce’ offers 1440 square feet in a bungalow format that delivers two beds and two baths with open concept kitchen and living areas. According to Maykut, there is an option to finish the basement in a plan that would create another two bedrooms and another bathroom. ‘Watson’ is a 1424 square foot design that is also a bungalow, featuring one bedroom plus an option for a second bedroom or a den depending on lifestyle needs. There are two baths, a main floor laundry as well as open concept kitchen/living area and, like Bruce, there is an option to finish the basement with another two bedrooms and a bath. ‘Mirosh’ features a grand open foyer in an 1823 square foot plan that offers two stories with three bedrooms and two and a half baths. There is a main floor

laundry and the basement comes with the possibility of bedroom and bathroom addition. Last and largest is ‘Le Claire,’ a plan that includes 2100 square feet of living space with a large master bedroom complete with ensuite and separate his and hers walk-in closets. Kitchen and living areas are open concept in this two-storey home that also offers a main floor laundry and a similar option to complete the basement area with bedrooms and a bathroom. StreetSide is showing off its experience and talent with a fully furnished designer showhome that is now ready for viewing. For further information, contact Realtor® Myles Viklund at Rancho Realty Services (Manitoba) Ltd. (204)793-1000 or visit www.homesbystreetside.ca

“We concentrated on two main buyer groups for the homes and maintained our mantra of providing the best possible value,” says Maykut. “Downsizing baby boomers can live in spacious bungalow plans focused on entertaining. Young families can live, grow, and play with these unique lots with many possible bedroom and basement options.” Autumn 2013 | STYLE MANITOBA | 75

homes and neighbourhoods

According to StreetSide Developments Manager, Marty Maykut, “StreetSide originally secured the land for a condominium development. But, with the opportunity to amalgamate three adjacent parcels, the best possible value was the creation of 22 single-family homes with very special lot sizes for entertaining and young families. The lot depths truly make these homes unique for their endless possibilities and use.”

vary from 5,000-15,000 square feet, and the developers put a lot of effort into keeping existing trees and working with current elevations on these lots.

Natural Setting Appeals By Lynne Mustard “There’s so much going on Sage Creek these days, I hardly know where to start,” comments Eric Vogan of Qualico Communities. “There are 15 showhomes in the Parade of Homes this fall and the builders have outdone themselves. Also, exciting new townhome condominiums by both Randall Homes and StreetSide Developments, are under construction near the Village Centre,” he continues. “Speaking of the Village Centre, Sobeys, TD Bank, a Shell Gas Bar and Wyatt Insurance are all opening this fall as well.” These businesses complement the Tim Hortons, RBC Bank, Dental Clinic and Veterinarian Clinic that are already operating in the Village Centre.

That small town feel, coupled with big city amenities is what makes Sage Creek unique, according to Vogan. “This is a pedestrian-friendly community, with nine kilometers of trails that converge on the Village Centre. There is a rural spaciousness here that residents appreciate, but also easy access to local services or downtown.”

New School Construction will begin on a Kindergarten to Grade 8 School in 2014; it will be located at the corner of Sage Creek Boulevard and Edward Turner Drive. Initially, the new school will accommodate 450 students, with a potential to expand to 600 students and will also offer childcare spaces.

cal education and health facility, a learning resource centre and library, a band and music room, a practical arts classroom, and facilities for special-needs students. The building itself will target Leadership in Energy and Environmental (LEED) Gold Standard certification. “It will be a great addition to Sage Creek and is in keeping with the high standards we’ve set for the community,” Vogan states. Qualico’s Head Office, built in Sage Creek in 2009, is also a LEED-certified building and all builders in Sage Creek work within Architectural Guidelines that ensure appropriate standards of design and materials.

and a soccer field, and is integrated into the network of trails that connect the local neighbourhoods and the Village Centre. These new facilities will be well used by the many young and established families making their homes in Sage Creek. However, Vogan describes Sage Creek as a mixed community, with empty nesters and singles as well, for which he credits the diversity of home styles available. “We have large and dramatic residences, as well as great-looking townhomes and apartments. All are well-built, with solid design and the latest features,” Vogan states.

“Winnipeg’s top builders are in on the act. Builders such as Kensington, Randall, Broadview, Sterling and Foxridge all bring their latest plans to Sage Creek first,” he says. “In addition, custom builders, including Arlt, Hearth, Gino’s, Artista, Maric and KDR are doing stunning, original designs.” With 15 showhomes open for the Parade of Homes, he believes visitors to Sage Creek will definitely be impressed by what they see.

Artista Homes, Sage Creek

Residents’ Association Vogan happily advises that there’s still more news about Sage Creek. “A Residents’ Association was formed this year. They’re very enthusiastic about the neighbourhood and about working with Qualico Communities to fully realize the community’s potential. We’re delighted to see their involvement and commitment.”

He adds that a new park is underThe school will feature a science way. It features a baseball diamond technology education room, a physiA bungalow condominium by Arlt Homes

The popularity of Sage Creek is evident in its growth. Located east of Lagimodière and just south of Bishop Grandin, Sage Creek is a visionary new neighbourhood where native prairie grasslands, wetlands, parks and an extensive trail network form a dramatic setting for new homes. There are over 1,100 occupied homes, with more to come. When complete, it will be home to some 4,500 families, making it equivalent in population to a small town.

The 2,279 square-foot, two-storey in Sage Creek features modern lines that start with a front balcony that juts out from the second floor’s flex room, and overlooks the yard. Once inside, guests are greeted by a double-sided fireplace, and open stair risers that lead to the second floor. Further in, 18-foot ceilings in the great room add to the grand feel projected by the large west facing windows, and a deck that overlooks the lake. Nine-foot ceilings in the kitchen open up the space, which includes a large eating island. Hardwood cabinetry flanks high-quality

appliances to finish off the large kitchen. The main floor is completed by a small powder room, as well as a laundry and mudroom with generous space for storage. Once on the second floor, a “catwalk” offers a view down into the great room before coming upon one of three bedrooms, and a flex room that features 10-foot ceilings and the aforementioned balcony. The master bedroom, along with a large walk-in closet, features an ensuite housing dual sinks, and a custom tiled shower. The final pieces of this story are featured in the walkout basement, which boasts nine-foot ceilings, a bedroom, full bath, and an entertainment room on a wood structural floor.

Luxe Lane Continuity in quality is great, but sometimes conformity in design is not. Hearth Homes, along with Sage Creek, have developed an exclusive luxury streetscape a quick twominute walk from the new school site, featuring homes with all the opulent amenities, and a truly customized design contained in a smaller footprint for low maintenance. “While lanes are becoming more popular, they usually come from production builders, and lack the ability to alter plans,” states Liam Milne of Hearth Homes. “Water Lily Lane has real curb appeal, offering fresh exterior designs with high-quality finishing materials, three-car garages, yet all at an attainable price point.”

7 Water Lily Lane, the builder’s gold awardwinning showpiece, embodies the streetscape’s mandate. The exterior stands out from the typical “arts and crafts” style with red acrylic stucco, brick, and dark grey composite cement board, surrounded by a fully-landscaped yard, large deck and stone patio. The interior features vaulted ceilings up to 12-feet, granite kitchen countertops, a master bedroom with large cultured marble shower, tiled fireplace,

and fully finished lower level with large windows. The lane’s other bi-levels and bungalows range from 1,300 to 1,600 square feet, while twostorey options cover 1,700 to 2,100 square feet, and prices start at $400,000. Lots are smaller in size so homeowners spend less.

South Pointe in Waverley West is a mature new development that has become a neighbourhood success story, thanks to planning that has targeted lifestyle, family and community. Indeed, so popular is South Pointe that the site is into its seventh and final stage of development, well ahead of schedule. “The developer, Ladco, has been able to bring a lot to the table thanks to its breadth of experience in the local market,” says Spencer Curtis of Hilton Homes, one of the 14 premier builders present in the community with showhomes open during this fall’s Parade of Homes. He suggests that as one of the most experienced developers, Ladco has created a blended neighbourhood that caters to large families, as well as young professionals looking for a location close to work, shopping and attractions. With an eye toward community, showhomes this fall from builders like Hilton, A&S, Randall, Ventura, Gino’s, Maric and Artista Homes, will highlight the easy living of South Pointe.

“South Pointe is a place where amenities team with lifestyle. Our designs help homeowners take full advantage,” he says. Now with the final piece of Phase I well underway, Ladco has released

1,400 lots with 200+ more available by October of this year. New as well will be two multifamily townhome developments currently under construction by Karma Property Management, and Oak Park Living Hillside at South Pointe features bungalow and townhome condominiums which use eco-friendly low impact materials, energy efficient appliances, and maximizes natural light. The residences are centred around the community’s greenspace, and as such, Hillside offers an ample mix of trees, shrubs and landscaping that includes a naturalized green corridor and open public spaces. Oak Park Living’s Joyy in South Pointe townhome community will provide a unique living experience for families at all stages of life – from singles, couples and young families to empty nesters at a very affordable price point.

This is the view of Artista Homes’ Frank Cotroneo. He comments that as a luxury homebuilder, they are very pleased with the developer, who has allowed them to express their vision in the homes that they build. A good case in point is Artista’s new showhome at 20 Waterstone. A Childrens’ Hospital Lottery home, Cotroneo says that the display home is attracting a lot of attention. “At South Pointe, we have found that the developer is all about creating something exciting and new, and we have been able to deliver with homes such as our new display property.” Now with the completion of Phase I and its 1,400 lots well underway, Ladco is readying plans to develop west of Kenaston Boulevard. David Borger, Ladco’s Vice President of Development, reports they will offer another 2,000 lots on 650 acres. Certainly, when com-

plete, South Pointe will be among Winnipeg’s largest new home communities. According to Michael Carruthers, Ladco’s Manager of Land Development, the increasing popularity spans from the numerous amenities that are paired with cutting edge new home designs. For example, he says the area’s trees and greenery have matured and much of the neighbourhood’s under-construction appearance of a busy new home development will soon be a thing of the past in Phase I. The parks have been expanded, and the walking and biking trails are well connected, giving residents ample recreation opportunities. Borger and Carruthers invite those seeking the advantages of a mature new home community in one of the best locations in Winnipeg to visit the builders’ display properties and make their new home in South Pointe.

Also new is the announcement of a French/ English school to be constructed on 8.8 acres in South Pointe. In April 2013, the Province of Manitoba announced that a new 86,000-square-foot facility will be built to provide service for 600 students from kindergarten to grade 8, as well as offer a new 114-space childcare centre. The building itself will be built to the highest eco-sensitive design and is expected to be complete in the spring of 2016. The design innovations that will be reflected in the new school are in keeping with the neighbourhood. Autumn 2013 | STYLE MANITOBA | 81

For example, Hilton is featuring two properties that it feels are indicative of the demand for homes in the south Winnipeg community. One is a 1,800-square foot contemporary cab-over with a best-of-two-worlds design that pairs traditional aspects with modern approaches. For the more upscale market, Hilton has a two-storey 2,800-square foot residence located across from the lake. According to Curtis, they have seen a need in South Pointe for larger homes that cater to not just big families, but professionals and business people who look for an ample home office.

with all Huntington Homes. These homes exemplify the range of home designs available through one of Winnipeg’s finest custom homebuilders.

The first is an awesome walkout basement modern bungalow, which exemplifies the leading edge in design innovation features. It is located at 192 Lake Bend Road in Bridgwater Lakes. The second is a contemporary two-storey walkout that will intrigue and excite you as you explore almost 4,000 feet of pure style and luxury. It is located at 82 Waterstone Drive in the fabulous South Pointe development. Don’t miss either of these beauties, as they are decidedly different.

“We can do anything our clients desire,” says Huntington Homes’ coowner Rob Swan. “Touring our latest two showhomes or having a guided tour of other homes under construction helps us get our clients’ design juices flowing with ideas for their own dream home.”

So what makes them the same? They are both built to the highest standards in Manitoba, consistent

Swan adds that Huntington Homes has hundreds of plans available on their in-house Computer Aided Design (CAD) systems. “Clients find that seeing a CAD design in 3-D helps them visualize their home concept and what possibilities exist as a starting point, and they can then go on from there.”

Whether the client is an empty nester looking to downsize to a smaller bungalow, or a family looking for more room or additional living space to accommodate a growing or extended family, Huntington Homes has a custom home build solution for every scenario. Before any design consultation takes place, Huntington Homes walks each client through a questionnaire to determine what features are important for them in their new home, and to ensure their home will meet their desires and needs. “The client’s wishes are our focus right from the outset,” Swan notes. “We also make sure we define their exact expectations in terms of materials for flooring, lighting,

cabinetry, etc., to ensure that their overall budget is met, not only at the beginning, but at the completion of their home as well.” “We at Huntington Homes believe our specifications for quality are second to none,” Swan notes. “We can demonstrate this to prospective clients with a half-hour guided tour of our showhomes with a qualified representative. We make sure our innovative building techniques are logical, effective and make sense for our clients.” Above all else, Swan says, “providing the highest quality construction protects our clients’ investment.” To find out more, visit their showhomes and www.huntingtonhomes. com

Lots to Choose From There’s something to be said about looking for life outside the city, or at least just outside the city. Pageantry Homes is now offering six lots set in the anticpated development of Whistler Hollow in West St. Paul. With large lots, ample greenspace, mature trees, and public access to the Red River, residents will also enjoy rural property tax rates, but close proximity to downtown amenities. The upper scale homes and townhouses will feature larger building footprints, set in earth tones to keep the natural feel of the surrounding environment. The company is looking to create their next showhome within the development. Pageantry Homes is currently working on a house in another rural setting. While the 1,742-square-foot, three-bedroom contemporary bungalow is not fully compelete, it’s beginning to match the development’s organic atomosphere, which is nestled between the forested banks of the La Salle River and the beautifully maintained Kingswood Golf and Country Club. A prime example of Pageantry Homes’ ability to blend well into developments can already be seen in Aspen Lakes, a popular development

in Oakbank, at 41 Spirea Lane (pictured here). The home reflects the sweet and simple nature of this quiet development, with large lots, and ample space to the side of the property. Home highlights include nine-foot ceilings, reclaimed maple wide board flooring, cream maple cabinetry, and master bedroom and ensuite with soaker tub, and six-foot countertop. No matter urban or rural, Pageantry Homes’ builds quality.

Mix Of Everything For over 30 years, Pine Creek Homes, a family-owned and operated custom home builder, has been helping clients create new houses, cottages, additions, and renovations in and around Winnipeg. While the company is known for their timber frame designs, the company also creates conventional and hybrid floor plans in a wide range of styles, from rustic to very contemporary. “If a customer chooses to build with timber, it is generally added in a main area and can be either structural or decorative, as shown in the kitchen here,” says Lori Veenstra, office manager. Veenstra states they work directly with each client to determine the ideal floor plan for their project. Pine Creek not only ensures customers have all the right elements in their home floor plan, but they also consider the property the house will be built on. She states the design also needs to

suit the lot size, the surrounding area (country lot, versus residential lot), and external elements, such as views and driveway location to ensure a cohesive design.

“We have that personal touch to help walk people through the process of building a home, which can be stressful, and take care of all the details so customers can focus on making the fun choices.”

“Our job is to give customers all the available options and guide their decisions,” she says.

Located in an area bordered by King Edward Street on the west, Dr. Joseph Rizal Way on the east, Commonwealth Path to the south, and the planned Chief Peguis Trail extension to the north, Waterford Green will offer Winnipeggers 1000 new homes in a walkable and bike-friendly community. Neighbourhoods, streets, parks and pathways are by design interconnected to make all parts of the community accessible by walking or cycling. The first phase of Waterford Green began this summer with servicing and infrastructure. David Palubeski, President of Lombard North, the development’s planners and project managers, explained the first phase will include Waterford’s two lakes and central park, and provide 219 single family lots, including a mix of single family homes, along with 110 individually titled townhomes, and approximately 300 condominium flats.

The focus of Waterford Green’s neighbourhoods are the Waterford lakes, oriented north-south and centrally located in the 160-acre development, complemented by 19 acres of trails and parks, an east/ west causeway across the lakes connecting Waterford Green’s neighbourhoods to the planned K to 8 School, and with Waterford Green’s Village Centre designed for the northwest corner of Old Commonwealth Path with Dr Jose Rizal Way.

By Kelly Gray

“This is all part of the interconnectivity of design that has functional and highly usable recreation spaces, and integrates Waterford Green’s pathways into the city’s Active Transportation Network, and causeway across the lakes. The causeway is an important design element providing interconnection between the lakes’ western and eastern neighbourhoods. Waterford’s street design eliminates the typical maze pattern so often found in new developments. We have sought an intuitive approach where local streets are connected to an internal loop, lead easily to one another and interconnect our neighbourhoods with one another,” explains Palubeski. Innovative design is reflected in the Village Centre commercial area. Rather than a typical mall approach where cars are king, Waterford Green will feature commercial establishments with active street frontages oriented to the pedestrian. “The focus is upon people and creating pleasant places to live, recreate, shop and work in a community which encourages a healthy lifestyle,” says Palubeski. “We see this community as a place where you just put on your shoes or get on your bike to visit friends, neighbours, go to school, head to a sports field or go to the Village Centre for an ice cream or coffee,” he says.

Housing selection is one of the cornerstones of Waterford Green. Builder plans include a mix of signature homes on the lakes, single family homes for families, smaller homes for young families or couples with no children at home, townhouses for new families, first time buyers and empty nesters, and condos for couples and those looking to down-size. Housing price ranges are expected to start under $200,000 and up, depending on housing lifestyle choice. “We are working with a group of the province’s leading builders to create a comprehensive mix of housing styles, reflective of our architectural guidelines that will meet the needs of a blended community composed of families, empty nesters, singles and young couples, all living side by side,” Palubeski says, noting Waterford Green’s design emphasizes liveability and creation of a unique sense of community for one of Winnipeg’s highest growth areas - the northwest sector - and Winnipeg’s most important current and future employment area - Centre Port. Builders include: A&S Homes, Gino’s Homes, Randall Homes, H. Albers Builders Ltd., Broadview Homes, Kensington Homes, Pearl Custom Homes, Trademark

Homes, Eagle Custom Homes, ADR Properties, Lyonsbrooke Homes, Galaxy Homes, Bluestone Homes Inc., Maric Homes, Sunstone Resort Communities, Queenston Homes, Summerview Homes Ltd., and MX Homes. Continuing with the innovation, buyers are invited to discuss their new home options with their selected builder, and if required, seek builder assistance in marketing their existing residence, and through the Waterford Green Project Management Team, discuss financing options with Assiniboine Credit Union and Caisse Popular Credit Union or their lender of choice. Not surprising then are comments from Palubeski that state they are pleased with the market response. In fact, over 80 percent of the lots are sold with builders reporting considerable interest. Expectations are employment growth and in-migration to the city, as Waterford Green’s innovative design approach continues to drive excitement in northwest Winnipeg’s new housing market. This phase of Waterford Green will be fully built out by 2015, with a second phase expected to come on the market in 2015 and finished by 2018. For more information go to www. waterfordgreen.ca

the only service most builders can offer. But the MX Group helps their clients from build to future renovations, and offers unmatched amenities at an affordable price in some of the city’s newest developments.

“The development is very exciting because of the different architectural styles, and houses ranging from bungalows with detached garages, to million dollar lake homes,” says Matthew Nicolas of the MX Group. “It will be an eclectic mix, not just stucco boxes. We’re looking forward to showcasing our design savvy work.” He says MX Homes will be offering an exciting selection of styles and a variety of builds, from spec houses to full custom work, from bungalows to two-storey houses. What makes the group unique is all the additional “frills” that are offered as upgrades by other builders but are considered standard in MX Group’s homes. From décor switches, nickel hardware, panel doors, kitchen pantries, and tri pane windows, these value-added items come at a price inline with other houses that don’t offer similar elements.

“Even within our spec houses, customers have a fair bit of selection. From flooring to cabinets, we can offer them numerous options so they can get the look they want,” explains Nicolas. “We also provide custom design service. We can start from scratch, and achieve your dream house.”

Another benefit of the working with the MX Group is they offer services beyond the original build. MX Renovations, and MX Restorations ensures that the same great people that built your house will be there all the way through your home insurance process, and will be there if you ever need an upgrade or repair. The 4,000-square-foot walkout is a thoroughly modern dwelling with clean, sleek lines, and an abundance of ethereal atmosphere, creating

naturally illuminated textures and surfaces from the moment you step inside. The front entrance has a continuous view through to the rear of the home, which features two full storeys of glass, while the silhouette of a glass and wood staircase with dressed fir timbers overhead is in the forefront. The great room is defined by a soaring two-storey feature wall with staggered maple sheets, and bordered by a sunken den with builtin banquette seating, featuring custom upholstery and dressed timber fir offset from the ceiling above. Dividing the den and the great room is a three-way, fully tiled fireplace.

The fully finished lower level is just as warm, with floating fireplace, over nine-foot ceilings, a bespoke, one-of-a-kind wine cellar and bar, and access to the lower deck, which is below a secondary deck that juts off the great room. While they are active in the fall Parade of Homes, Maric Homes is also looking toward future builds in exciting new developments such as Waterford Green, northwest Winnipeg’s newest community. Waterford Green puts forward a new standard of community planning with strong emphasis on quality living, connectivity, park, and street aesthetics.

“What I think we’ll see is a wide range of housing types that will blend into the existing area,” states Dan Rolfe of Maric Homes. “Like many of Winnipeg’s new communities, you will see a great balance of parks and green spaces all close to shopping, public transit, schools, and adjoining neighbourhoods. Maric Homes is happy to be part of this growth in Winnipeg, and we look to continue to bring a new home product to the marketplace that meets the need of the area and the discerning customer.”

At Home with Innovation Waterford Green is one of Winnipeg’s newest and most successful new home developments. Located in the city’s Northwest sector, the new neighbourhood is predicated on innovative land use and design, where walkability and community are key. Alongside the lakes, central park, and interconnected bike paths and streets are some of the province’s leading builders and developers, who are helping to bring this vision to life. With an idea to create a truly mixed neighbourhood, Bluestone Homes is one such builder. The project will offer 18 townhomes in the heart of Waterford Green. According to the developers, Bluestone Homes will feature two-storey stylish townhomes with a full, developable basement. These townhomes will also offer private yards, main floor laundry, back decks, and a double detached garage. Amenities such as quartz countertops, stainless steel appliances, Kohler (or equivalent) fixtures, and pot lighting are standard. Even oversized windows are included in the price. And, best of all, there are no common area / condo fees.

Layouts are spacious, with properties featuring three bedrooms and two and half baths in open plans that offer 1400-square feet of gracious living in a community that has seen 80 percent of residential building lots already sold.

Prices start in the low $300’s with properties already seeing considerable interest.

Urban Balance Healthy cities are happy cities. Look around the world and places that offer a vibrant centre are those that have that certain something, that bit of extra that makes living and visiting more worthwhile. It is an active downtown filled with attractions, offices, shops and people that make the difference. CentreVenture Development Corporation, the city’s downtown development agency, is involved in a wide range of initiatives aimed at evolving downtown Winnipeg into the epicenter of civic, entertainment and cultural activity. Supported by both the City of Winnipeg and the Province of Manitoba, CentreVenture has embarked on plans like the creation of the SHED (Sports, Hospitality and Entertainment District) and a neighbourhood development plan for the Exchange Waterfront District. While it may at first glance appear that these two plans are mutually exclusive, the neighbourhood development plan is being designed to create a community that is attractive for residents, and the SHED plan is designed to attract entertainment activities and business. Together these plans work to complement each other, providing the mix of neighbourhood feel and vibrancy that make

downtowns attractive to both local residents and tourists. Will Winnipeg be able to springboard this approach and make its downtown the place to be? CentreVenture and its partners think so. Moreover, so do a growing number of Winnipeggers that are not only coming

downtown for its shopping and attractions, but calling the area home as well. With trendsetting condos and apartment facilities, a growing commercial and office presence and attractions like the MTS Centre and Market Square, Winnipeg’s expressive downtown has become a location that has become healthier, happier and for many, the centre of a vibrant urban lifestyle.

Building community By Leigh Patterson

For father and son architect/ developer team Ernie and Yaron Walter, the idea of development means much more than “build it and they will come.” Their company, Studio Walter/Walter International is dedicated to growing the community where they live, work and play.

It’s a labour of love for the energetic duo, whose newest ambitious condominium development concept, “ALTRO off Corydon,” is now well underway in Winnipeg’s popular Corydon and Osborne districts. Officially launched in July, ALTRO consists of 13 condo projects with a total of 125 distinctive and contemporary units scheduled to be built over the next two years. The projects are ideally located to take full advantage of the many

amenities that exist in established neighbourhoods, such as shopping, restaurants, parks and schools, as well as rapid transit, police, fire and ambulance services. “The Corydon and Osborne areas are mixed use already, so they make sense for these condo developments,” says Ernie, who was inspired to create a neighbourhood in Winnipeg similar to Toronto’s Yorkville or Edmonton’s Whyte Avenue. Geared towards people who desire carefree living in modern, welldesigned spaces along with a shorter commute, the condo units will range from 900 to 3,000 square feet. Depending on the prevailing architecture of the surrounding area, condo styles will range from main floor flats with basements to second floor units with multi-levels and lofts, as well as side-by-side townhomes and apartment style condos. The Walters’ approach is anything but cookie-cutter. “People want individuality,” Ernie notes. Because they are often building on unusual or non-standard lots in an urban environment, creativity is key. And if that means working around an old tree rather than cutting it down, as was the case in one project, then they will. A five-unit condo complex recently completed at 275 Hugo Street is a prime example of the Walters’ inventiveness. It is an environmentally

conscious building with an open, bright and airy design despite being situated on a narrow lot. Ernie likens the design to toy building blocks: pieces with unique characteristics that when connected, create a cohesive whole. “We both like well-designed and functional spaces,” Yaron notes. The units in this complex make use of every nook and cranny. Sliding doors were incorporated to keep the interior spaces streamlined. The Walters created functional storage areas by utilizing available space in bulkheads and beams. “We recognize that empty nesters looking to downsize and young professionals will still need space to put things away,” Yaron says. “We got pretty creative in a few spots; we will do things the hard way to get the results we are looking for.”

Condo owners can enjoy all the benefits of owning a home, including access to private patios, yards and balconies, as well as to covered or secured parking. The Walters are truly committed to their vision of the Corydon neighbourhood and the ALTRO projects. Ernie was so excited to be a part of this venture that Yaron was able to effectively lure him out of retirement. Both have lived and worked in the area for many years and through their actions, are actively encouraging others to embrace the vibrant community they love. “The word ALTRO grew out of the word ‘alternative’,” Ernie says. These new housing enclaves will give people options so they can be part of an exciting neighbourhood while enjoying the best that an urban lifestyle can offer.

High ceilings and abundant tri-pane windows allow in plenty of natural light, while use of glass panels on stairwells and catwalks, and open riser stairs maintain the spacious feel. The Walters incorporated quality finishes, such as the large high-end ceramic tiles imported from Spain and high-gloss red cabinets that provide unique elements not found in traditional condos.

Freedom to Enjoy Life By Lynne Mustard

Bungalow condominiums on Southlands Creek

Two years ago, Barry Zagozewski and his wife Marlene were looking for home renovation ideas, so they toured a showhome in Pritchard Farm Southlands Village. They were immediately taken with the custom bungalows and condo lifestyle.

Such is the freedom of living in a condominium community of custom-designed, detached homes, where all the outside yard work is done by a Property Manager.

Linda McMillan and her husband Dale, residents of Pritchard Farm Southlands Village for just over a year, are also fans of the condo lifestyle. They first experienced it in Sarasota, Florida where they own a one-level home in a condo setting. “I never thought we would move away from Selkirk,” says Linda. “But we had a two-storey, 1927 character home with a large lot and decided it was time for something simpler.” They wanted to stay in ‘this end of town’ and to be close to family. They

had looked around some when friends in real estate recommended Pritchard Farm Southlands Village. She adds, “We wanted Irwin Homes to be our builder. This was a particular layout of home that we quite liked and the rest is history!” She says her home is a one-storey with a finished lower level but, “we spend most of our time on the one level; it has everything that we need. We love what the builder did for us and we really like the fact that we don’t have to take care of our yard,” Linda confides. Barry and Marlene also chose an Irwin home and added a sunroom and a patio to their design, to take advantage of their beautiful view of the sculpted, dry creek garden and a large field beyond. He comments, “We enjoy the privacy.” Maric, Arlt and Irwin Homes are the three custom builders working in Pritchard Farm Southlands Village. “They’re all excellent builders,” states Barry. “You could choose any one of the three.” Condo fees are about $180 per month. “We get good value,” says Barry. “There’s no doubt about that.” The Property Management firm does all the landscaping and yard work for every homeowner

throughout the summer, and handles snow removal on sidewalks, driveways and streets all winter. Property taxes in East St. Paul are “quite reasonable”, according to Barry and there are still choice lots available in Pritchard Farms Southlands Village. Linda McMillan says that while there is construction right now on their street, their backyard is serene. “We feel we’ve picked a wonderful lot because the common area looks like it’s part of our yard. It makes it park-like for us, which we love.” She reiterates how much they love the area and its location. “We don’t fight with traffic. We have Jets season tickets and we do other things in the city and it’s so nice coming home. We always comment that we’re home in about 15 minutes!” Fellow Pritchard Farm Southlands Village resident Barry concurs, “Our experience overall is that we absolutely love living here. We sold everything: the lawnmowers are all gone; the tillers are gone. Now we enjoy someone else cutting our grass. It just allows us that freedom to do what we want,” he concludes.

“So then and there we decided to sell our house and have a custom home built in Pritchard Farm Southlands Village,” Barry declares. “We love the design of our home and living here. We can just turn the key and away we go.”

Pritchard Farm Southlands Village is located just past the Perimeter, east of Henderson Highway. The Zagozweskis also love the area, having lived in East St. Paul for many years.

Each home will be constructed to very high levels with materials such as maintenance-free exteriors, fiberglass

windows, lifetime roofs, and fully piled foundations. “Garages are oversized and are perfect for a couple of cars and maybe a motorcycle, ATV or a Seadoo. The architecture is timeless, as well,” Matthew says, noting that the colour palette and the designs are such that in 25 years the houses will not have a dated appearance. Buyers will have ownership of the yards, something that most bareland condos don’t have. Owners can create the backyard they desire with custom pools and patios, and landscape it however they like. Landscaping and snow removal in the front spaces make for carefree living. “If you travel south for the winter, you don’t have to worry about these maintenance issues,” Matthew notes, adding that while residents are away, there is the security of the gate. Nature exists around the site, with Creek Bend itself located amid hiking trails along the Seine River and

through Royal Wood forest. Biking or cross-country skiing opportunities are almost within reach of your doorstep. Close proximity to the Perimeter Highway delivers quick getaways to cottage country. The airport is just 20 kilometers via routes that get you to the terminal in half an hour, while the MTS Centre is 12 kilometres and 10 minutes away. “You get the best of both worlds – the excitement of city attractions nearby, and the peace and quiet of the Seine,” Matthew says. “People will be impressed by the beauty of the location and we believe that the opportunities to enhance lifestyle thanks to the natural elements of the site will be a key feature. We’ve taken out a lot of the guesswork with well thought out, contemporary residential designs and left the location to speak for itself.” Creek Bend Hollow is located at St. Anne’s Road and the Perimeter. An Ascent Upward South Winnipeg is putting a fresh foot forward with the stylish Ascent Condos in Fairfield Park, a well-considered townhome project getting underway at Waverley Street and Lee Boulevard. Already the market has voted on the project and developers report sales are higher than anticipated, thanks to spacious designs and a location where proximity to shopping, restaurants and major sites like the University of Manitoba and Bison Stadium are just a short walk away. Designed by Cibinel Architects, Ascent will offer two-storey and three-storey bare land condo residences, as well as two-storey and bungalow strata townhomes in formats that offer space, style and contemporary turnkey amenity packages. Footprints extend from 1340 square feet to 1810 square feet in a range of layouts. Every residence offers its own ‘at door’ parking with two spots standard, thanks to attached oversized garages. Also included are balconies and green space, stainless steel appliances, and décor packages that are decidedly modern in palette and finish.

Undoubtedly, Ascent is bringing a fresh approach to the neighbourhood with stylish floor plans and surprisingly low prices. With occupancies set for late Summer 2014, homes are moving quickly.

Swingin’ Good Livin’

Developers invite buyers to visit the presentation centre at Lee Boulevard and Waverley Street to discover for themselves the design, the full range of amenities and the upgrade to lifestyle that Ascent delivers.

If you’re hip to the Manitoba condo and townhouse scene, you’ll know The Jazz on Lag is the place to be. The first phase of the three-storey, eight-plex townhouse unit named “The Big Band,” is now complete and taking prospective owners, while the second phase, “The Blue Note,” is anticipated for completion in late October 2013. Each townhouse phase features a modern, lowmaintenance exterior of cultured stone accents, and stucco finishing with Hardi-plank, singleattached garage, and patio. Inside, quality constructed, open concept functional floor plans feature either two or three bedrooms, two and a half baths, walk-in closets, laundry areas, and full basements. Cabinets and countertops boast shaker style cabinetry with crown moulding, laminate countertops in both the kitchen and bathroom, a stainless steel appliance package, and high quality vinyl flooring, with the option to upgrade to laminate or tile.

Townhouses aren’t the only options along Headmaster Row. The Swing and The Dixie are two apartment condo projects that offer the same quality constructed offerings, just in a smaller setting. The area surrounding The Jazz on Lag offers owners full service amenities from restaurants, a bakery, meat market, physiotherapist, hair

salon, veterinary clinic and coffee shop, along with easy access to downtown Winnipeg, as well as all Provincial Parks and lakes, and is in close proximity to favourite sports venues. With open concept options and prime area amenities, you’ll never have the blues living here.

Customized Dream Sometimes reality can be even more stunning than what one dreams. Such is the case with 981 Northumberland Road, a 2,520 square-foot superbly crafted custom bungalow situated on nearly two acres in West St. Paul. Once you step inside, the impressive foyer invites you into the bright open living/dining areas accented by four pillars, stone faced gas fireplace, custom mantel, and walnut hardwoods. The modern paint palette offers the perfect neutral backdrop for any style of décor, and lends to a comfortable feel. No other place in the home is more welcoming than the stunning custom dream kitchen. The 21 by 21 foot room features maple cabinets with a hand-worked traditional antique glazed

effect. Granite countertops, along with a stonelook porcelain backsplash cap off the kitchen’s ambience, while a central nine-foot island and eat-in area allows for ease when entertaining. The primary master suite features a five-piece ensuite with dual granite top vanities, tile shower, soaker tub, walk-in closet, separate water closet and heated tile floor. The secondary master suite offers a four-piece ensuite with similar options. The main level also boasts two additional bedrooms and full bath.

Hardwood stairs lead to the lower level with ninefoot ceilings, wood structural floor, entertainment area, wet bar, bedroom, bathroom, and fitness room, making this area essentially a second home. A multi-level, composite deck provides a tranquil setting overlooking the landscaped grounds. The exceptional quality in construction, millwork, and state of the art mechanical systems will sustain the home’s timeless elegance for years to come. The value is incomparable. A customized dream ready to call home today.

Clear Embellishments The entry way to your home is the first thing people see, and can be an ideal opportunity to reflect your personal style. Decorative glass films can enhance any clear glass in order for people to see “you.” MPD Glass and Vinyl Graphics’ decorative glass films can simulate a sandblasted façade, textured glass, or even rice paper. Customers can select from over 50 pre-made patterns, or have something a little more personal created for their exterior setting, including an address for entry doors, or monograms. Once a design is selected, an artisan from MPD will measure the space; the film, if custom created, will be designed and approved by the client, and then the installation can occur. The company features a mobile installation unit and can apply the films quickly with little set-up and mess. While decorative film can make a statement as guests walk up to your home, it can be equally impressive inside on glass den doors, pantries, patio or interior office doors. And, if a client feels the need to change the pattern years down the road, or if new owners purchase the home, or a business logo changes, the films are easily removed and/or replaced. Along with decorative films, MPD offers a similar product directed at solar control. Films are rated for exterior UV protection, which reduces glare, and harmful rays without dimming light, and helps save on energy. The films can create a uniform appearance on any home, office or store front, along with providing a unique alternative to blinds or other window coverings. Looking to go a little deeper? MPD also offers glass etching and sandblasting. There are three different sandblasting methods the company utilizes to get different looks on the glass single stage sandblasting, which is just one pass over the surface; multi-stage sandblasting, which features different levels of sandblasting to give depth and shade; and glass carving, which goes deep into the glass and adds a real “wow factor” to the design. MPD Glass and Vinyl Graphics’ enhanced glass projects can be seen throughout various developments in this year’s Parade of Homes.

The Beauty of Stone

products&innovations

Masonry is one of the world’s oldest and most traditional building products, but recent years have brought a wider range of unique products to the marketplace than ever before. Because of its inherent quality, it has often suffered from the misperception that it is a luxury that is out of reach. In reality, the wide range of products, their design flexibility, and the immediate return on investment have made masonry more affordable than ever. Whether you are building your first home or your dream home, I-XL’s vast selection of masonry products is sure to include the right one for you. There is no such thing as a typical first time homeowner; everyone is unique. However, they often share a few common circumstances that can be greatly enhanced by masonry. For instance, first homes are often not intended to be the final home, so owners are often motivated to invest in ways that will maximize their return in the case of a future sale. Brick or stone veneer adds significant curb appeal, resulting in a quicker sale at a higher price when that time comes. Masonry is often the touch that sets a home apart from similar homes on the market. Another common and inevitable occurrence during the switch from renting to home ownership for first time buyers is an increase in time spent on home maintenance, as tasks previously assumed by the landlord are taken on by the owner. Masonry is virtually maintenance free, particularly on home exteriors. The initial investment made on the product pays back many times over, as regular cleanings or painting or replacement projects become a distant memory; once installed, the work is done! Eldorado Stone, for instance, even comes with a 50-year product and colour warranty, giving the homeowner peace of mind for decades.

These benefits can also be enjoyed when converting a first home into an investment property. A masonry veneer is appealing in the market place, requires no ongoing maintenance, and is extremely durable. These qualities

both increase the rental value, as well as providing peace of mind to the owner, knowing it is clad in a durable and worry free exterior. When building your dream home, the primary factor determining investment choice is often personal, stylistic preference. In these situations, variety and customized options are the appealing factors, letting the homeowner bring a dream to life. Whether choosing a traditional red pressed brick, a modern, clean lined stacked stone, or something reminiscent of an old world country cottage, masonry options run the gamut, often giving customers more options than they ever imagined possible. While they can range from a quartz infused, sparkly black smooth stone to the rumbled look of turn of the century brick loft, all masonry products have one thing in common; all exude quality, attention to detail, and skilled craftsmanship, and are sure to be a sound investment to be enjoyed for generations. To see the many options available, I-XL invites you to their showroom at 717 Lagimodiere Blvd.

On The Floor By Carly Peters

Exclusive rugs and modular carpet tiles make their way into Manitoba this fall. Bare, creaking, chilly floor boards under one’s feet in the fall makes anyone shiver, either from the cold or just the lack of colour. “During fall, people start thinking about their homes again, how to make them warmer, or give them a different look,” says Jen Derrett, retail floor manager for The Floor Show. “Area rugs are a great solution. They add so much to a space.” Yet, The Floor Show doesn’t want customers flopping down any old rug on your floor. It’s Derrett’s job to find the unique and the exclusive for the company, and they certainly have that. Having only been launched in Canada eight months ago, Bolon’s soy-based woven floor

112 | STYLE MANITOBA | Autumn 2013

textiles have made their way into Manitoba and are only at The Floor Show. The Swedish company is known for their unconventional take on textiles, and their fashion-forward friends who design for them. Derrett cites a navy-blue Missoni pattern that emulates waves as a creative and fun project they did for a child’s playroom at the lake. The variety of colours and patterns from Bolon add architectural and design values to a surface that has traditionally been restricted to “standard solutions.” “Bolon is for clients that want something different, like metallic colours. It’s almost a modern take on sheet vinyl,” she says, adding the product can come in a rolled or tiled format, so clients can create large designs, or mix and match tiles in a certain area. “You can use them indoors, as well as outside, so after

design&decor you’re done using in the summer you can roll them up and put them away.” Modular carpet tile allows customers the ability to utilize multiple colours and patterns to do more. From creating depth, to interesting motifs, to being a customized area rug on a hardwood floor, they create innovation that can’t be matched with carpet that comes off a roll. With FLOR, an innovative system of carpet squares, clients can order two or 200 tiles that can be assembled to create custom rugs, runners, or wall-to-wall designs of any shape or size. “I first saw FLOR’s products on Martha Stewart, and loved them right away,” say Derrett. “They are a commercial product meant for residential applications.” Made from recycled materials, the products are eco-friendly, as well as being maintenance friendly. Unlike a large rug or wall-to-wall carpet, if a spill occurs, the tile can be pulled up, and placed in the dishwasher - no need for hands and knees scrubbing. Similarly, if a tile is damaged, only the one needs to be replaced, not an entire room. “It’s function and practicality meets fashion,” she says, adding the company is constantly changing patterns and colours, keeping the line exciting and ensuring customers will always have a unique product. Yet, the product that as generated the most interest at The Floor Show has been Staton Carpet’s line of products. “We had their line on the floor for three days, and we had at least three interior designers come in saying they wanted it,” states Derrett. “It’s very different for Winnipeg, and it’s a very desirable product.” While she says animal prints, like the one seen here, are very hot this fall, the high-quality handmade line has a vast collection of patterns to suit any taste and décor, as well as boasting wall-to-wall options, or area rugs. Even the

company’s binding options are large, allowing for both indoor and outdoor usage. The brand also boasts a high-green initiatives offering wool options, which is biodegradable, renewable and has a sustainable life cycle, as well as being stain-resistant, non-allergenic and air purifying. Again, a practical solution with a desirable aesthetic. Innovation is certainly the selling point of The Floor Show. Lines like the Bolon, FLOR, and Staton Carpets are a testament to the store’s ability to bring in new products, and consistently evolve their product offering to be a step ahead of the competition. Samples of all these fabulous finds can be seen at The Floor Show’s Waverley location. Autumn 2013 | STYLE MANITOBA | 113

design&decor It’s In the Details

The owners of this Tuxedo home wanted their expansive windows to be showcased with treatments that reflected their style. Karen Wiebe, design consultant, Blinds Are Beautiful, helped them select Hunter Douglas’ Skyline Gliding Window Panels’ Alustra series, a line boasting fabrics exclusive to select dealers. While she was happy with the choice, Wiebe noticed one detail that would turn a good choice into a great one. The panels featured a black bar on the bottom and sides, and the valance was to also come that way. She decided it would soften the look by switching it with brushed nickel. Something as simple as changing one detail to achieve the perfect project is what sets Blinds Are Beautiful apart. “You can buy blinds at so many places, but we’re here to provide personalized advice to enhance your home,” states Wiebe. In addition to offering a well-appointed showroom on Portage Avenue (in the cedar house across from Polo Park), Blinds Are Beautiful has won seven Consumer Choice Awards for their Shop-At-Home service. “By offering Shop-at-Home, it’s a much better shopping experience,” she says regarding the complimentary service. “Our clients really get to experience what the different options would look like in their home, and we help them to make decisions on which products best complement existing flooring, fixtures, and furniture.”

Solid Purchase

Wood is one of those unique materials that boasts timeless appeal, while still being contemporary in style. design&decor Maximize Design

Whether you’re building a new home or looking to get the most out of your older one, space is at a premium. The creative design team from For Space Sake is designing more floor to ceiling cabinetry than ever before in order to maximize the space available in today’s homes. “When people are either renovating or building, they should consider their cabinetry and storage when designing their home,” states Pauline Boisselle. “In some instances, we have designed custom built-ins throughout the house. This will obviously eliminate the need for more furniture and will help to create a minimalistic interior.” For example, this custom designed wardrobe, in Heritage Maple featuring resin door panel insert from Lumicor, essentially replaces the front hall closet. The design of the resin panel shows bamboo rings which work well with the home’s wood details and accessories, allowing it to seamlessly blend with the decor. To further customize the cabinetry, For Space Sake offers a wide range of resin panels to be used as room dividers or door inserts, while lit closet rods have become a favourite with clients. Glass shelves for shoes and purses, and beautifully designed handles and hardware add sparkle to any project. For Space Sake’s dedicated team loves to design and to create, as well as organize, and strives to achieve perfection and to make sure that customers have a wonderful experience when dealing with the company.

Fashion Meets Function

Function and fashion now reach new heights with Hunter Douglas’ Platinum™ Technology, available at Ken’s Carpets & Urban Home Style Centre. Motorization has quickly become the most popular trend in window treatments. Hunter Douglas offers customers several options that are compatible with some of their most popular styles of shades. PowerRise allows you to raise or lower individual window treatments by simply pointing the remote at the receiver eye, while PowerGlide allows you to open and close the sheers and rotate the fabric vanes of your Luminette® Privacy Sheers or Alustra® Luminette Privacy Sheers. Earlier this year, the company also released the Platinum™ App, which works with interface components from Hunter Douglas and your Apple mobile device to allow you to control motorized products over your wireless network. Available for iPhone®, iPad® and iPod Touch®, the Platinum App lets you control window fashions individually, by room or by time, creating the perfect personalized scene. Ken’s Carpets & Urban Home Style Centre also offers the brand’s thermostat technology, just launched two months ago, which allows users to set a desired temperature and the blinds will open or close in order to achieve it. Not only can blinds be tech savvy, but save energy as well. 123

Kitchen&Bath

It’s What YOU Want By Carly peters

With a combined 60 years of experience in the custom cabinet industry, Inspired Comfort has worked on everything from $5,000 projects, to grand $100,000 installs. Their greatest and most recent completion is a brand new showroom that gives customers a wide range of options for any cabinet creation. The company’s new 10,000-square-foot space, which opens in September, offers three divisions to suit everyone’s budget and needs. First is the cash and carry (cabinetlist.ca) option, perfect for the DIYers, builders, or anyone who wants the product right off the shelf. With 200 to 300 selections, each piece is structurally stronger than most “cash and carry” items, and features soft close doors, a luxury that usually comes at an extra cost with other builders.

Customers can also preview the products online at cabinetlist.ca and pick up their selection the next day. Inspired Comfort even offers onsite trailers people can hook up to their vehicle for easy transport, ensuring less time is being wasted on logistics and more time is being spent creating. The second option is highlighted through an in-house, full maple shaker-style kitchen, which is available in roughly 10 stains, and a thermofoil kitchen, also available in multiple colours. While orders from this area can take three to four weeks, it offers unmatched colour options. Products from the division can be seen in this home, which features maple, shaker-style doors in an exclusive stain, as well as a Wilsonart HD laminate that mimics the look of granite, but not the cost. 125

“You can get really good value with these products,” says James Friesen, owner and founder. “Everyone has a budget, but it doesn’t mean the project has to look cheap.” Finally, if you don’t find exactly what you want on the floor, Inspired Comfort offers full custom work. Sales Manager and Designer Fred Harder comes with vast experience in the industry, and has developed relationships with many of the city’s builders. “He knows functionality and style, and he can guide customers to what they want for their home,” says Friesen, adding that everyone from the full-service team focuses on superior customer relations to provide the best experience possible, along with the best product.

Kitchen&Bath Chic Consumption

TOTO is known as a premium producer of low flow toilets, designing the ideal water conservation fixture. Originally Japanese-based, the company designed for markets where over population forced people to find ways to reduce water consumption. Today, they are a driving force behind bringing low flow initiatives to North America. Toto has become a full line supplier, offering sinks, brass fixtures, and showers that offer reduced consumption along with premium craftsmanship and design. One of the company’s newest brass fixture collections is the Toto Upton Suite, which softens the hard lines of contemporary models through rounded edges and corners on their faucets and shower sets. While the line looks good, it also boasts high performance. The single handle high-efficiency faucets have an aerated flow rate of 1.5 gallons per minute (gpm), which saves 32 percent more water than standard models. TOTO’s proprietary aerator system delivers the same drenching effect as higher volume models, enabling you to wash your hands effectively. The 2.5 gpm Upton showerhead also provides superior coverage, durability, consistent performance, and ease of cleaning throughout the life of the product. To round out this suite, TOTO offers a line of design-coordinated accessories including towel bar, towel ring, paper holder, and robe hook. You can view this suite and others at Kitchen & Bath Classics showroom at 1300 St. Mathews Ave.

Mix It Up

Take a touch of traditional and pair it with elements of contemporary, pull a piece from one room and put it in another, and one can create a cohesive home design. Leo Kehler of Kitchen Craft took this idea of a simple, yet detailed kitchen into this Arlt Homes build in Bridgwater Forest. The maple doors in seashell finish features a modern shaker style, but with detailed moulding for a traditional take on the cabinet’s fronts. The addition of the lengthy, lift-up doors below the stacked cabinets also offers a decorative detail featuring glass panels and inset lighting. As the builder tends to stay away from corner pantries in their designs, a floor-to-ceiling wall of cabinets was created around the home’s appliances. Along with ample space, some of the cabinets house drawers for convenient storage and easy access. The nine-foot kitchen island, which features Cambria Quartz countertops in Bellingham, also boasts functional space including hidden dividers for storage, an under-the-sink garbage area, and ample prep room beside the professional-grade sink. The company created a wooden bar (not pictured) for the home in a darker grey tone to differentiate the space from the kitchen, yet at the same time keep the colour palette similar. They also pulled elements of the powder room’s sink for the cabinet’s hardware, creating a fully integrated design concept. 127

D Grade

Sieger Design took the simple symmetry of the letter “D” and created a distinctive collection of sanitary ware, baths, and furniture with matching panels. Duravit Happy D. is simple, elegant and timelessly modern, gaining design prizes since it was introduced. Why is Happy D. so successful? Perhaps because it’s so reasonably priced in spite of its high design quality. Perhaps because Happy D. is such a versatile bathroom range. Perhaps because the D-shaped washbasin is unmistakable. The rounded corners offer the feeling of substantial features with a clean-cut architectural design. The product range includes washbasins, toilets, bath/whirl tubs, and bath furniture. The rounded cabinetry comes in four wood finishes or high-gloss white veneer, and is constructed of marine grade material ensuring even if the wood is soaked in water for hours, even days, it will stand the test of time both in looks and quality. Understanding the need for quality construction and appeal, Dieter Sieger has been designing for Duravit since the early 1980s. His two sons have gradually taken over the helm and have broadened the horizons of Sieger Design, creating full-service design and numerous series for the Duravit brand. Robinson Bath showcases this historical bathroom series, along with numerous other designs to ensure every bathroom is a happy one. 128 | STYLE MANITOBA | Autumn 2013
