the agenda Summer in Manitoba is never long enough – that’s a given. Nor is our publishing cycle each year as we work on the fall issue of Style Manitoba – also a foregone conclusion. Much like the builders scrambling to finish the last details in their showhomes on time for the Parade of Homes, our people are busy getting those last shots taken, scribing last minute editorials and putting the finishing touches on the layout to get to the printer on time. Throughout the process, Style’s schedule is intrinsically tied to that of many MHBA members - and so it should be. After all, it’s always their showhomes, products and services that are heavily featured in our autumn editions. This season marks Style Manitoba’s 18th year of bringing readers a taste of what’s available locally in home designs and décor, housing developments, outdoor living, entertainment, and the lifestyle concerns of Manitobans. In this issue, we are proud to feature the Fall 2014 Parade of Homes, with coverage on some of the finest builders, developers and industry suppliers in the province. How time flies! It does not seem so long ago that we published the inaugural issue of Style Manitoba, but really, it is. Since September of 1996 when our first edition came out, whole neighbourhoods have grown up and filled in, followed by sod turning ceremonies for the new communities that sprang up quickly behind them. During the time our publication has existed, both home designs and neighbourhood planning have evolved considerably, resulting in innovative, well thought out spaces that would delight even those with the most discerning tastes. Indeed, today’s homebuyers are in for a treat. This fall’s Parade should not be missed. Throughout the 18 years of publishing Style Manitoba, I have always had the support and encouragement of my father, Bernard, who read every issue
from cover to cover. He was a constant source of inspiration to me, offering his sage advice on everything from sales to editorial ideas (some of which featured him) to distribution, and sometimes even boosting staff morale. (He once penned a note to our Art Director, Paul Butters, commending him for his excellent layouts and design sense.) In fact, I can truthfully say Bernard was our biggest fan.

When a home is as much a pleasure to look at as it is to live in, you know that it’s been built with consideration to every detail. Such is the case in this custom-built home by K. Streu Homes, located in the Tielmann Drive subdivision off Henderson Highway just past the north Perimeter. Being this close to the Red River, the homeowners wanted to take advantage of the park-like surroundings without detracting from them.

Builders Kurt and Heather Streu achieved this vision by using the lot to its fullest advantage. The home is nestled into a landscaped, lowmaintenance yard. Gentle grass hills are punctuated by areas of crushed black granite featuring large boulders and softened by a variety of perennial plantings. The whole yard is surrounded by mature trees that were intentionally spared when the lot was cleared. The Streus further integrated the home and landscape by building up the front yard, thereby eliminating the need for extra steps at the front entrance. Doing so fulfilled the homeowners’ other wish: a streamlined, functional design, inside and out. The Streus achieved a balance of retro and new by giving a 1970s ranch style design a contemporary makeover. The home’s clean façade of manmade stone and acrylic stucco is paired with visually interesting angled rooflines. These angles are cleverly played up in
the home’s interior (more on that later). Even the four-car garage’s metal and glass doors by Creative Door are architecturally integrated for a seamless exterior.

Because the home was built for the views, looking from the inside out is nearly as nice as looking in. Large, triple pane windows from Accurate Dorwin are maximized around the
home to take full advantage of the natural light. A walkout deck off of the main floor living area is a private retreat to relax and enjoy the lake-like atmosphere. The matte metal deck railing with glass inserts from Windeck provides an unimpeded view of the tree foliage and occasional glimpses of birds and squirrels.
The deck can be accessed either via 12’ x 8’ sliding glass doors off the family room or the sliding panels next to the kitchen. The kitchen is a central hub for these homeowners and their active family, so no details are spared here. Some of these details are artfully hidden to stay true to the streamlined aesthetic. Motorized, laminated upper cabinet doors for example, flip
up with the touch of a finger -- eliminating the need for visually distracting door pulls. The eating island features under-cabinet lighting and a wine rack. In addition to the glass range top, all of the GE Monogram appliances are built-in. Their sleek, stainless steel profiles complement the surrounding solid walnut cabinetry installed by Woodwise Custom

Millwork. Further continuity is achieved by the stainless steel accents included among the glass tiles of the backsplash. Glittering white quartz countertops reflect the daylight and at night, the glow from the unique LED light fixture from Robinson Lighting that’s suspended above the island. Heather took great care and pride in selecting the interior design and dÊcor elements of this home, including the lighting, colour scheme, flooring, cabinets and finishing materials. For example, Heather chose a Grohe spring-mounted faucet with both regular and veggie spray options, for its form and function.
5A built-in wine rack in the eating island comes in handy when serving in the adjacent dining area. The kitchen, as well as all the bathrooms in the home, are warm underfoot thanks to heated ceramic tile flooring. At the midway point of the open concept main floor is a transition area consisting of an informal dining space. Ceramic tile gives way to a custom-stained, sanded oak wood floor with wide 5 ½” boards supplied and installed by The Floor Show. A large linear gas fireplace warms the space and adds sophisticated ambience. A flight of solid oak floating stairs accented by stainless-clad stringers and spindles leads to the carpeted master bedroom tucked away on the next level. Daylight streams through the huge main window, as well as through several

main entrance or the garage. Stair lighting guides one down to a spacious area with large windows. The landscaping can be enjoyed from this level as well, despite being northfacing and partially below grade. A workout room and entertainment area complete with projection screen TV is the perfect place for the homeowners’ three teenagers to hang out. Each teen has a bedroom equipped with a walk-in closet. There’s certainly no shortage of impressive details in the lower level. The two bathrooms shared by the teens have ample storage and recessed niches in the shower stalls to house all their toiletries. The owners designed a custom headboard for one of the bedrooms to accommodate an angled wall. Kurt, known for his creative, innovative approaches to homebuilding, transformed a wall that was camouflaging a telepost, into a visually interesting element simply by angling it rather than squaring it off. Painted the same colour as the bulkhead, the wall now has flair as well as function.

smaller square windows along the short hallway leading to a large walk-in closet. Fitted with drawers and shelving, the his/ hers closet eliminates the need for dressers in the bedroom itself. This feature makes for an overall cleaner look, and since the closet can be closed off behind sliding doors, the space appears even more streamlined. Dormand Industries supplied all the interior doors for the project, including the 8’ high doors on the main floor. “Proportionately, they look better with the angled ceilings in the master and elsewhere in the home,” Kurt notes. A stunning ensuite shares the same linear, clean, yet warm, characteristics as the rest of the home. Most notable is the glassed-in shower stall by Shodor, with a surround clad in wood-like tile to mimic the ensuite’s walnut cabinetry. A luxurious rain showerhead and body sprays sourced from Robinson Bath Centre lend a spa-like feel to the shower. There is no curb to step over since the shower floor is sloped to a central linear drain. Two corner windows and the use of large mirrors take full advantage of the natural light here, too. Fully wired for sound, the home’s electronics equipment is housed in a storage cubbyhole located below the main entrance. It used to be that homeowners had their equipment displayed in full view, but now the preference is to hide it all away to reduce clutter. An infrared controller can simply be pointed in any direction to change TV channels, control stereo volume and more. “There’s no limit to the amount of home automation you can have,” says Streu. This family home exhibits all the hallmarks of a K. Streu Homes build: high quality material and craftsmanship, thoughtful design, and functional spaces made for living. The ART of Home Automation The future has arrived for homeowners. With it have come greater convenience, security and the ability to control interior environments with an ease our grandparents would have viewed as science fiction. Downhill Speed Regulation™ (DSR) helps the driver to handle steep downhill driving in a safe and controlled manner. The desired speed can be set between 2km/h and 18 km/h and is kept constant within the bounds of what is physically possible. This is achieved by means of engine and transmission control and braking intervention,” he says. Roads Less Travelled Trevor Nott is taking the car business onto a fresh track. An award-winning leading force in Winnipeg’s pre-owned and luxury auto sector, Nott is celebrating the grand opening of a second location this September that is nothing if not as innovative and groundbreaking as the cars they sell.

The new site is located at the very busy corner of Waverly Street and McGillivray Blvd in Winnipeg’s rapidly expanding south end. It is unlike any car showroom most of us have ever visited. Indeed, one typically opens the door to a car dealership to find a few new models strategically placed in cookie cutter showrooms amid the aroma of new tire smell. At Nott Auto’s new location, buyers will not only find as many as 100 cars under roof, but an opportunity to discuss and buy fine art, as well as sample wines in a combination that is strikingly different from the auto mall culture so pervasive in most major cities.
“However,” he says, “My family’s home is Winnipeg and we have watched proudly as the city has undergone a renaissance in recent years. Trevor reports the five-acre location offers 29,000 sq. ft of display and office space that includes an additional 9,000 sq ft of shop area. The popularity of Nott Auto really forced the move. Trevor reports that for the second year running, they have been dubbed Canada’s Top Choice Luxury Auto Dealer by a Toronto-based panel. Winnipeggers have not been surprised at the kudos, given the number of vehicles seen on the city’s streets with the distinctive NOTT logo on the rear of Escalades, Lexus’ and Audi’s. “We really reached our capacity at the location off Lagimodiere in North Kildonan. That site will continue to serve North Winnipeg,” he says, remarking that they will increase the number of service staff, given that they will be jockeying vehicles between locations. “It will also be rebranded and become a Wholesale Service Centre where we will be able to add to our services to include fully certified auto body
repair facility. We will also offer all of our local trade-ins to the public at wholesale pricing, as well as run an open auction for some of the province’s smaller dealers. Most of the trade-ins will be priced between $5000-$20,000 at a true wholesale price. We figured since we will have the extra space on Lagimodiere and lots of our clients have teenage children looking for their first car, what better time to start marketing towards the young first time buyer?”
Shiny white floor tile and overhead bulkheads are used in a runway effect to lead customers towards the car showroom and unique ‘Genuwine Cellars’ corner. This will contrast with the striking, dark epoxy floor on which the high-end vehicles will be displayed. “Throughout the space there will be angular flooring and feature wall details. The idea was to use these angular lines to suggest beams of light emulating movement,” says Leah.
The new Waverly at McGillivray location will offer more space and greater convenience, thanks to its position at a major intersection across from Lindenwoods close to the Waverley Automall. The new site will also be a distinctive addition to the area with very cool design attributes.
Transparency of space was an important design component. According to Arnott, they wanted to offer natural light for the clients and staff, as well as create an honest, open, friendly and comfortable environment, an aspect that reflects Nott’s business values.
“Currently, the property is home to a mid 1960’s era light industrial structure that leaves much to be desired. The corner is really one of Winnipeg’s most prominent intersections and our civic pride motivated us to look to design specialist Leah Arnott of Arnott and Associates for the help we need to turn this building into an innovative, attractive, luxury car centre where fine art and great wines don’t seem out of place.” Like many of Arnott’s projects the existing site had challenges and poor conditions. However, the Arnott design team –Leah Arnott, Mandy McLeod and Renée Martel – have been able to create an interior environment and exterior façade that is exciting, contemporary and unique.
“There is a lot of charcoal grey against the white. It was felt that a more neutral palette would work best for the space to showcase the product and large format art throughout the interior. We have also used back painted glass, as well as very interesting drywall features and sliding glass doors. We also utilized reclaimed wood elements and concrete accents,” she says, adding that her team also used modest splashes of a fresh orange color, highlighting Nott’s corporate colour, to add further contrast. Another perfect step is the addition of a custom wine feature. At Nott’s new site they will be building a glass-enclosed wine display that will allow Trevor to pair his concept with the fine wine lifestyle. To achieve this, Nott enlisted the help of Robb Denomme and Genuwine Cellars. The local company is a world leading custom wine cellar design and build firm with instal-

lations in more than 10 countries, where they have created climate-controlled wine storage rooms, which hold from 90 bottles to 45,000. “Trevor got us involved because Genuwine Cellars represents the epitome of fine living. Together we make a great team,” says Denomme. He reports that they are installing a custom design implementing their new Metal Series wine racking. “It is a contemporary project that works well within Nott Auto’s new gallery concept.” The materials and precision of Genuwine’s Metal Series work in harmony with the proposed modern appearance of Nott’s new showroom, where visitors will be able to peruse high-end automobiles, fine art, and other wine storage solutions offered by Genuwine. “Wine lovers will be able to view our portfolio of cellars and contact us directly with questions,” says Denomme. Wine cellar options are more varied than ever, with cellar designs ranging from traditional to modern, wood to metal, and custom to modular. Although Genuwine’s specialty rests in the ultra-high end of the wine cellar market, clients with more modest budgets will enjoy the company’s robust wine storage offerings that exist across the price-point spectrum, all of which enjoy the trickle-down effect of Genuwine’s high-end work. Interested collectors contacting Genuwine will be connected with their own designer dedicated to their project. The first stage involves a needs

analysis, where factors like desired bottle capacity and collecting habits are surveyed. Next is a formal design presentation that involves threedimensional renderings, material selections, climate-control plans and lighting plans. Finally, Genuwine offers full wine cellar installation services, as well as after-sales service items, including Sommelier-guided inventory and stocking advice. 1 tbsp (15 mL) canola oil ½ cup (125 mL) yellow pepper, diced ½ cup (125 mL) red pepper, diced ½ cup (125 mL) orange pepper, diced 1 small onion, diced 2 garlic cloves, minced 3 tbsp (45 mL) butter 3 tbsp (45 mL) all-purpose flour 1 cup (250 mL) 2% milk 8 hard-cooked eggs, diced 1/4 cup (50 mL) white wine 2 tbsp (30 mL) fresh parsley, chopped 2 tbsp (30 mL) fresh dill, chopped ¼ cup (50 mL) Romano cheese, grated Salt and pepper to taste 12 jumbo pasta shells, cooked 1 cup (250 mL) tomato sauce 2 tbsp (30 mL) fresh parsley, chopped ¼ tsp (1 mL) or to taste, red chili flakes Fresh parsley leaves 1. In medium frying pan, heat canola oil over medium heat. Add all peppers, onion and garlic. Sauté vegetables until softened, about 3 – 5 minutes. Set aside. 2. In medium saucepan, melt butter over medium heat. Whisk in flour until mixture is heated through and smooth. Whisk in milk and stir until sauce is thickened, about 5 minutes. Remove half the sauce to a medium bowl. To saucepan mixture, add eggs, wine, parsley, dill, Romano cheese, salt, pepper and the cooked vegetables. Continue stirring until mixture is combined. Stuff pasta shells with egg mixture and place on a parchment lined baking sheet. Cover and reheat in a 300 °F (150 °C) oven 10-15 minutes. 3. While shells are heating, add tomato sauce, parsley and chili flakes to remaining white sauce in bowl. Reheat in microwave, 1-2 minutes. 4. To serve, divide tomato cream onto 6 plates. Top plated cream with 2 stuffed pasta shells. Garnish with parsley leaves. Makes 6 servings
Egg and Pesto Sandwiches 8 tbsp (120mL) commercial pesto or prepare homemade pesto as follows: 1 ½ cups (375 mL) fresh basil leaves 3 cloves garlic 2 ⁄3 cup (150 mL) grated Parmesan cheese ¼ cup (50 mL) pine nuts 3 – 4 tbsp (45 - 60 mL) olive oil 1 ⁄8 tsp (.5 mL) salt 1 ⁄8 tsp (.5 mL) pepper ½ cup (125 mL) commercial spaghetti sauce 16 slices whole-grain rustic bread
3 small tomatoes, sliced 6 eggs ¾ cup (175 mL) 1% milk 3-4 tbsp (45-60 mL) butter Additional spaghetti sauce for dipping 1. In food processor or blender, combine basil, garlic, Parmesan cheese, pine nuts, olive oil, salt and pepper. Process until well blended. 2. Spread 1 tbsp (15 mL) spaghetti sauce on eight slices of bread. Spread 1 tbsp (15 mL) pesto on remaining eight bread slices. Top pesto with tomato slices and first eight slices.
4. In a large non-stick fry pan, heat 1 tbsp (15 mL) butter over medium-low heat. Fry sandwiches until golden-brown on both sides, about 7 minutes per side, adding additional butter as needed. 5. Clean out your fridge. Summer is a saucy season. Rid your shelves of extra dressings and sauces to make room for comfort casseroles. While you’re at it, wipe down the shelves and drawers. I recommend a fresh box of baking soda monthly to eliminate odours.

Lastly, strip and sanitize beds from top to bottom. Be wary of cleaning instructions, dry clean if necessary. Be sure to include pillow shams and bed skirts. Reading the impossibly accomplished, funny, crazy, first novel by Ghalib Islam, you can’t help thinking of writers like Salman Rushdie or Gabriel Garcia Marquez. From one of the masters of story in Canada comes this new collection. Bill Gaston’s insight into his characters and his sharp wit make for a completely enjoyable experience. From a lovelorn arborist more attuned to trees than to people, or a bank executive who has to make a difficult decision when she believes her (out-of-this-world) sex life might be killing her, these off-kilter individuals inhabit a dark, playful world. You finish the book and marvel just how good writing can be. There’s even a story called “Geriatric Arena Grope” about a Leonard Cohen concert.

And speaking about great titles, Kathy Page’s book has titles like “The Kissing Disease” and “We, the Trees.” It’s a collection of stories that are almost like fables or myths, full of misunderstandings and origins. These imaginative tales are, odd, creepy, and maybe a little scary. A surprising tour guide describes the origins of mysterious ruins in one story, while waylaid tourists find their worldliness makes them ill-equipped to deal with the seemingly unsophisticated locals. These are tales that take you elsewhere, to the place where dreams cross the borders on their way to nightmares.

Adam was a happily married 50-year-old man when he suffered a stroke. His wife is his primary caregiver. It’s exhausting work, reminding your husband about what he’s forgotten: his advanced education, whether or not he likes mint tea. But everyone has secrets, including a patient and his nursemaid. Taking place in the Romanian émigré community in Montreal, this is a slim novel that nonetheless packs a punch. Felicia Mihali has given us a beautiful story with a surprising twist or two, about betrayal, forgiveness, and the mercy of patience.

STEREO Reviewed by Randal McIlroy Terje Rypdal Melodic Warrior (ECM) Norwegian guitarist/composer Terje Rypdal’s music for large ensembles grows larger, bolder and yet more mysterious. His two latest works with orchestra are much more than guitar concerti, and the signature keening of his electric instrument is more a colour in the orchestral palette – fire red and licking when the sombre mood calls for a jolt, cool blue and coiled elsewhere. Here, however, it’s the scoring for Bruckner Orchester Linz (on the title track) and Wroclaw Philharmonic Orchestra (on the second, And the Sky was Coloured with Waterfalls and Angels) that impresses highest, with stentorian trombones carving dark shapes while celeste and woodwinds tumble in space. The voices of the Hilliard Ensemble are situated beautifully in the title work, and there are moments where countertenor David James and the guitarist share the same breath. For music closer to his electric tradition, ECM has also released the bracing Crime Scene.
Someday World Eno/Hyde (Warp Records) A mind as quick and intuitive as Brian Eno’s makes exciting company in a recording studio, with music likewise if personalities mesh. Where Wrong Way Up, his pairing with John Cale, sounded more the beginnings of two interesting solo albums, his new work with Underworld’s Karl Hyde is a seamless pairing, to the point where it helps to read the liner credits to keep track of individual contributions. Spooky pop predominates, with distant singing and sharp shards of guitar over sturdy electronic rhythms (Mother of a Dog is even stranger than its title), but the closing quarter finds the two ruminative almost to devotion – Who Rings the Bell being almost hymnal. (A companion album, High Life, has just been released as well).
Play Blue Paul Bley (ECM) Montreal-born pianist Paul Bley is a storyteller, and that takes focus. The music from this 2008 concert in Oslo is typically capricious – it’s something to imagine him unfolding the twist of an idea, like the Erik Satie reference in Way Down South Suite, to anticipate which avenues are worth exploring – but he sees the conclusion, and the music is tautened by an iron logic and dramatic contour often missing in the solo rhapsodies of fellow pianist and label mate, Keith Jarrett. The man is heard on a gorgeous instrument, recorded beautifully by ECM veteran Jan Erik Kongshaug. Aged 76 when he performed this music, Bley is in handsome shape himself. Manitoba artists include Katharine Bruce, Phil Brake, Chris Brown, Brigitte Dion, Sue Gordon, Marianne Gopalkrishna, Pat McCullough, Amanda Onchulenko, John King, Roger LaFreniere, Hugh Rice, Miriam Rudolph, Michel Saint Hilaire, Emina Tankovic and Inga Torfadottir. “I am honoured to represent all the incredible artists in the gallery, and I am humbled by their creativity,” she adds. “The fact that I get to promote them and live among their art is just amazing.” Walsh proudly points out that Soul Gallery is the first Canadian gallery selling contemporary bronze sculpture from Belgium. “A stunning bronze by Anne Vrielinck now graces the entrance of a Frank Lloyd Wright home in Phoenix, Arizona. Unique wood sculpture by Lloyd Klassen is part of the vast art collection at National Leasing in Winnipeg.” She plans to broaden her current collections in the gallery to include pieces that she will bring back from a trip to Europe this fall.
In fact, it was during a business trip to Milan, Italy that Walsh discovered the bronze sculpture that is now featured at Soul Gallery. “I fell in love with original art in the ‘90s. I met with marvelous local artists such as Bruce Head, Winston Leathers, Keith Wood, Katharine Bruce, and Tim Schouten, and began placing some of their work in my design projects and award winning showhomes.” This passion for original art has evolved into the creation of Soul Gallery Inc., which opened its doors in April 2011. Two “satellite galleries” of Soul Gallery are located at 74 Brookstone and 8 Stan Bailie Drive in Winnipeg. All that is required to become a candidate for cosmetic surgery is a personal desire for change, and a realistic expectation of what can be achieved, according to Dr. Ken Murray and Dr. G. During this procedure, excess skin is removed and muscles are tightened, Dr. Singh explains. “Some patients ask for additional surgery to be performed at the same time, such as breast augmentation or breast lift,” he says. “This is a popular combination surgery that can be performed as a day surgery procedure.” The recovery time for this and most aesthetic procedures will be between three to six weeks, Dr. Singh adds. Mexican Summer By Ian Mozdzen
A sunny green courtyard; my eyes fix on dangling pomegranates. I reach out and pluck one. I walk narrow streets of weathered buildings webbed with corroding metalwork. A market! More temptation! Chocolate, peppers, corn, pastry, meats and juices stir my appetite; ceramics, weaving and carvings fire the imagination. A lively brass band marches by. Was that Frida Kahlo?

Sound like a dream? It is: Mexico.

FIRST - A brief history of Mexico... For thousands of years tribal people farmed and hunted a land of desserts, jungles, mountains, and plains. Cities rose with grand monuments, road and water
Then the Spaniards arrived. Cities fell and resources were seized; all were repressed by gunpowder and obliged to adopt a homogenizing religion. Revolutions came and went.
And there’s more Mexico where THAT Mexico came from.
Mexico City: Museum City Home to 22 million people, naturally there’s a lot to Mexico City. Its 16 distinct boroughs burst with cafés, galleries, boutiques, bookstores, markets, stunning architecture, cuisines gourmet and street - you name it, Mexico City has it. The main attraction? Museums: nearly 200 of them. Indeed, the city itself is a museum. Mexico City wasn’t always Mexico City. Since 1325 it was Tenochtitlán, the famed and feared Aztec city reigned by Moctezuma II. A flourish of canals, floating gardens, temples, palaces, and ball courts - even aquariums and zoos. Spaniards were so in awe of Tenochtitlan they likened it to a dream. Sadly, it was dismantled for today’s Mexico City. But remnants can be seen at UNESCO World Heritage

Site Museum of Templo Mayor. Right in the historic centre, you tour surviving buildings and absorb a wealth of information about the mecca and its (human sacrificing!) peoples. There’s more: a short bus ride to the city’s outskirts finds you at another UNESCO must-visit: Teotihuacánn, where men become gods. Once Mesoamerica’s largest urban centre, Teotihuacánn is an extravagant alpha city from 100 BCE. Here you march a grand “Avenue of the Dead,” see murals of wild jaguars, then climb two stunning pyramids: the sanguine “Pyramid of the Moon” (climbed by Frida Kahlo and Trotsky in the 2002 film Frida), and the monumental “Pyramid of the Sun” (extra gasp-worthy for panoramic views and arduous 234 ft. climb). To make sense of it all? The National Museum of Anthropology’s 20 acres of exhibits put the brain into pre-Columbian overdrive, but standouts include the massive Aztec “Stone of the Sun,” giant Olmec stone heads, and exquisite green Moctezuma headdress. Cultural practices surviving colonization are also showcased, like Totonac “Flying Men.” These dancing daredevils symbolically spiral upside-down around a tall pole. (If you’re lucky, you’ll catch them still at it!) Projecting past into present are the Rufino Tamayo Museum and Anahuacalli Museum, both radically reinterpreting ancient pyramid architecture with vastly different artistry.
At Tamayo, expect mind-bending original exhibits and the collection of famed artist Rufino Tamayo (18991991). At Anahaucalli, one third of Diego Rivera’s jaw-dropping 60,000-piece collection of pre-Hispanic sculpture is regally displayed in monolithic black volcanic stone.
Casa Oaxaca. This restaurant is also an art gallery, and you taste it in their cheese-stuffed pumpkin flowers, chamois-drizzled ceviche, thick spicy mole, and toasted-beef topped avocado melon soup. Oaxaca’s food rocked our world. Earthquakes help, too - July 29th shocked us with a 6.4 rocker!
But no face (other than the Virgin of Guadalupe’s) flashes more frequently here than that of Diego’s wife, Frida Kahlo. Thankfully, the Frida Kahlo Museum is a 1954 time capsule of the renowned artist’s last living year. You’ll see original and unfinished works, personal collections and memorabilia. Frida’s distinctive Tehuana dresses and secreted prosthetics also get special attention.
Veracruz & Yucatan: Gulf Heritage Two more must-see states reside around the Gulf of Mexico: Veracruz and my husband’s home - Yucatan. Tropical Veracruz is rich with musical tradition and colonial heritage. Islanded by rivers and sugar-cane fields, Tlacotalpan has both. This little town is home to Agustín Lara (famed singer/songwriter who rubbed elbows with Edith Piaf and Nat King Cole); and it’s UNESCO-stamped for its perfectly preserved 18th century design.

Oaxaca: Cultural Oasis Oaxaca possesses one of the world’s most diverse ecosystems, and thanks to isolating mountain geography, it’s also home to 16 indigenous groups.
Once a key port, Tlacotalpan’s importance faded due to the railroad, but luckily, it remained untouched, leaving it firmly circa 1700s. You could spend days wandering streets (we did!) admiring Andalucian colonnades, Caribbeann arches, red-tile roofs and colourful facades.
Turn one way, you dig into a flower-stuffed tamale; turn another, and you’re soothed by a classic Champurrado (chocolate atole); turn yet another, you’re romanced by intricately patterned rugs, artful pottery, or fantastical woodcarving. Is that a bowl of roasted grasshoppers? But Oaxaca really gets heads spinning in July, month of Guelaguetza, an age-old Zapotec celebration of “exchange” that’s grown into an annual onslaught of parades, mini-festivals, roving bands, performances, and artisan fairs. Two events at the city’s sacred hilltop amphitheatre are the heart of it all: Donaji & the Guelaguezta showcase. Donaji sees a massive cast blowing conch shells, fighting with pre-Hispanic weapons, and dashing with flaming torches to re-enact the martyrdom of Donaji, a Zapotec Princess caught betwixt love and politics. Regional pride fired up - “Viva Oaxaca!” and “Viva la Guelaguetza!” resound with fireworks throughout the valley - Donaji dovetails into the Guelaguetza. Unfolding over five hours, the Guelaguetza performance lets Oaxacans put their best feet forward with a spectacle of traditional regalia, music and folk dance - even live turkeys are included!
Each “sharing” concludes with offerings; hats, crafts, sweets, and even whole pineapples are hurled into the uproarious crowds! Turkeys not included. Guelaguetza aside, out-of-town excursions are also fascinating; you see a 2000 year old Montezuma cypress tree, tour ruins like mosaic-rich Mitla and mountaintop Monte Albán, and even swim in Tlacochahuaya’s cliff-side pools near spectacular petrified waterfalls. You also meet mezcal. Advice: Forget tequila! Go mezcal! A smoky alcohol made from fire-roasted maguey plants, mezcal is an “elixir of the gods” (rightfully so - it proofs upwards of 55%). As they say: “For everything bad, mezcal; for everything good, the same.”
And flamingo territory is where our Mexican dream comes to an end: Yucatan Peninsula. Curve appeal By Leigh Patterson Photography Michael Roberts A thoughtful design, rock solid underpinnings and a homeowner’s vision came perfectly together in this stunning, completely renewed yard in East St. Paul. Designed and landscaped by Kyle Thibeault, owner of Silver Stone Landscaping, the yard shows no remnants of its former self. Gone is the stamped concrete driveway. The dated deck is a distant memory. Old garden beds have faded to black soil. “We ripped everything out and started from scratch,” says Thibeault. This meant literally reshaping the earth, front and back, creating berms and changing elevations. Thibeault and his Silver Stone crew hauled in boulders and 500 yards of crushed limestone as the base for the extensive hardscaping, which includes retaining walls, patios and five water features. The ambitious overhaul now allows the homeowners to entertain and enjoy family time in what is essentially a series of outdoor rooms. These spaces are linked together by curvilinear retaining walls, rounded garden beds, undulating stone pathways and graceful terraced steps on gently sloping lawns. The homeowners desired a naturalized look and at the same time, all the conveniences, bells and whistles available for modern landscaping projects. The outdoor kitchen, for example, is an entertainer’s dream, complete with pizza oven, refrigerator, built-in barbeque, stainless steel storage drawers and garbage dispenser. Thibeault used retaining wall stone from Barkman’s Rosetta Collection in the “Copper Canyon” colour for the kitchen walls, which are topped with custom concrete countertops. “Roman” pavers used for the kitchen floor are also used on pathways and on the new driveway to maintain the cohesive look found throughout the yard.

The kitchen is conveniently located just below the expansive glassed-in deck off the back of the house. Here, Thibeault used Trex® composite decking consisting of eco-friendly recycled wood and plastic. He added a stone veneer to the base of the deck to integrate it with the house and yard. Thibeault included three water features in the front and two in the back. All are built into raised planters to function as visual points of interest. And all are equipped with basins and pumps that recirculate water into continuous streams that add action and sound. One of the water features located at the rear of the yard also acts as a transitional point before one steps down to an intimate fire pit area. Anchored by a flagstone patio, the fire pit area is surrounded by retaining walls that define the space and provide privacy. Thibeault ingeniously “cut” into several rotating walls to incorporate several of the large, rusty black boulders he included in the yard to add dimension and texture. The homeowners wanted a property that would change with the seasons. Thibeault delivered with a variety of shrubs and perennials anchored in beds of decorative stone imported from Wisconsin. He planted 70 mature trees around the yard, including spruce, Amur cherry, linden, spring snow crab-apple, Thunderchild crab-apple, Manchurian ash, green ash, Ivory silk tree, lilac and basswood. All of the natural and man-made features can be enjoyed into the evening hours thanks to an extensive lighting system that highlights trees and water features, and is built into stairs and retaining wall caps. An underground irrigation system helps keep the newly transformed property as low maintenance as possible.

Brant Boychuk, owner and operator of Lawn Boys Ltd. has been successful on both fronts. While many lawn maintenance businesses come and go, Lawn Boys has been providing property maintenance services to customers in Winnipeg and surrounding areas for the past 25 years. During that time, the company has continued to grow and add new services. “I started Lawn Boys in 1989,” Boychuk says. “I was attending university and working at Woolco Department Store, and along with two friends, decided to give the lawn maintenance business a try.” While the three are still friends, only Boychuk has remained in the business. “I have grown the business from a 1976 Ford truck to about 10 trucks and eight crews,” he says. Lawn Boys main service is lawn care, but the company also provides snow removal and landscaping services. “We specialize in providing top-quality, year-round maintenance at a competitive price,” he states. Boychuk attributes the longevity of his business to hard work and resiliency, as well as loyalty -- both to and from his customers. “We work seven days a week, 24 hours a day – as needed,” Boychuk states. “That has allowed us to build good relationships with long-standing customers. Some of our customers have become close friends, and some have even joined the company. Many of my employees have been with me for eight to 10 years. Some have left and come back, after realizing the value this company offers. Our employees are treated like family, and all full-time employees are offered a benefit package.” Lawn Boys’ customers range from small yards to large exclusive contracts. “I value all of my customers. No property is too large or too small. And all my customers get the same quality service,” he says. In addition to property maintenance, Lawn Boys Ltd. offers a variety of landscaping services. Softscape includes property grading, turf repair and installation of soil and sod. “We

The entire development was designed with pedestrians and cyclists in mind, according to Dwayne Rewniak, Acting Director of Housing Delivery and Land Development, Manitoba Housing. ”When the neighbourhoods are complete, there will be over 80 kilometres of connected pathways and sidewalks that will converge in the Town Centre.” One of the many attractive features of the Bridgwater area is its diversity of housing, Rewniak points out. “Whether a single-family home, townhouse or apartment, homeowners have the opportunity to find a home that is uniquely theirs.”
Bridgwater Forest
Bridgwater Forest is more than 90 percent complete, Rewniak says, adding that of the 1100 lots that have been developed, over 1070 have been sold. Homes in Bridgwater Forest range from single family to multi-family units. “Single-family lots include standard laneless lots, amenity lots, which back onto a lake or park, and laned lots (smaller lots with back lane access). The multi-family units include rentals, town houses, and condominiums,” explains Rewniak.
Bridgwater Lakes Bridgwater Lakes is the second neighbourhood development, and is comprised entirely of single-family homes. “Bridgwater Lakes homes are built alongside three lakes, paved walkways and abundant green space, including a central park that is the focal point of the neighbourhood,” Rewniak notes. “The homes blend traditional style with distinctively modern architectural features that underscore the uniqueness of the neighbourhood.” When completed, 1190 single-family homes will be available in Bridgwater Lakes, with approximately 50 percent being visitable homes. To date, more than 850 single-family lots have been sold and over 500 homes are occupied. New showhomes in Bridgwater Lakes on Lakebend Road and Appleford Gate will be open to the public in September, and featured during the Parade of Homes this fall.
Bridgwater Trails Bridgwater Trails is the third residential neighbourhood. The first of two phases of the development is currently being serviced, and construction is scheduled to start later this year. When completed, there will be 1040
single-family homes and over 1000 multi-family units. Showhomes will be available for viewing by fall 2015.
Town Centre Bridgwater Centre, located in the heart of the three residential neighbourhoods, is a large area and therefore development will take place over time, Rewniak says. “Population will drive commercial and retail development in the Town Centre,“ he adds, noting that a number of commercial parcels have been sold to date, and construction is expected to start later this year. Bridgwater Centre will also include 1000 multifamily units, and construction of those units is underway. Showhomes will be available for viewing in the Town Centre by spring of 2015, Rewniak states. The Neighbourhoods of Bridgwater is a 20-25 year project, and when complete, will boast 5000 single-family homes and 3000 multi-family units. “The goal of this development was to provide housing diversity, increase density and create a walkable community. And in less than seven years, we are well on our way to achieving that goal,” says Rewniak.

Bridgwater Forest was the first neighbourhood to be developed, so it is the most mature of the three residential neigbourhoods. Finding Luxury This year’s fall Parade of Home offering at 30 Casselman Crescent in Oak Bluff West is an excellent example of why Artista Homes is Manitoba’s national award-winning luxury homebuilder. “It’s just nicely on the other side of the noise.” Eric Vogan’s description of Oak Bluff West summarizes the laid-back lifestyle in one of the hottest communities in the greater Winnipeg area. As Vice President of community development for Qualico, Vogan is a veteran of Winnipeg’s real estate scene. He’s worked on many of the city’s best known and most popular subdivisions, but he says there’s something really unique and special about Oak Bluff West. “You can buy a 40-foot lot anywhere in the city, but you can’t often find a 70-foot lot that is so close to shopping, schools and the city,” he says. Located just a stone’s throw from the intersection of McGillivray Boulevard and the Perimeter Highway, Oak Bluff West boasts large lots, low taxes and beautifully designed homes from seven of the city’s top homebuilders.
The large lots mean that each house is well set back from its neighbours and can accommodate three-car garages easily. The extra space brings with it more privacy, outdoor space and wonderful light. “When we were planning the neighbourhood, we were going for a very relaxed atmosphere,” notes Vogan. “The houses stand well by
themselves, but besides the extra outdoor space, it’s the interiors that really benefit. The light comes in so well. You really notice it once you’re inside.” The area is attracting a mix of young families moving out from the city, and many locals looking to upgrade their house while keeping their rural lifestyle. “We’ve spent a lot of effort getting the details right,” says Glenda Sobie, General Manager with Ventura Custom Homes. “You’ll see many of our homes take advantage of the wide lots with large porches and garages complemented by spacious, modern interiors.”
Ventura will be introducing its new Tucson bungalow design in the area, which features a multitude of stand-out details from its custom entertainment unit, tempered glass railing system, huge ensuite and large chef ’s kitchen to nine-foot basement ceilings and a spacious, modern layout. On the outside, Sobie says they will be adding some nice landscaping touches. “It’s the kind of place where you can sit out in the backyard around a big fire with friends and family,” she says. “You can tell many of the residents love the outdoors, too. They have ATVs, boats and snowmobiles.” For the outdoorsy, Oak Bluff West will have a large network of walking and biking trails that will be integrated into the entire community. The trails will lead straight to Oak Bluff ’s K-8 school and the town’s recreational facilities, for example.
Master plan, quiet streets “It’s a great little town. We spent a lot of time working with the RM of Macdonald to make sure the master plan was well thought out,” notes Vogan.
The master plan melds the new Oak Bluff West area into the existing town. Quiet streets gently curve around the area giving each home its own special introduction as you drive up. Many of the homes back on to green space, which provides a relaxed atmosphere and more breathing room. By the time the neighbourhood is complete, it will have more than 800 new homes. With more than 130 lots already sold, Oak Bluff West is really catching on. Phase 1 is nearly sold out, but there are many great lots now available in Phase 2 for buyers to choose from. “I think that people are attracted by the fact that they can find a nice, spacious home in a quiet, safe neighbourhood that is only minutes from city shopping,” states Vogan. “You have a beautiful home with room in your driveway and room in your yard. And it is every bit as financially accessible as any home in the city.” Participating builders in Oak Bluff West include Artista Homes, Paradigm Custom Homes, Parkhill Homes, Randall Homes, Somerville Design Homes, Sterling Homes and Ventura Custom Homes. The excitement continues at South Pointe. Located in Waverley West in the rapidly expanding and popular southwest sector of the city, the community has just seen the completion of its first phase. Now, the developer will move across Kenaston Blvd. to begin work on the next parcel in a second phase, a 640acre site where servicing will start this fall and new home construction will commence later next year.

“We have serviced 1400 lots since the conception of South Pointe,” says David Borger, Vice President of Land Development with Ladco, the company behind the plan. He reports that Phase I has been very successful. “We have sold 1200 of those 1400 lots, and sales expectations have been continually exceeded thanks to the demand, the location and the ability of our homebuilders to create a wide variety of wonderful home plans.” Realtor® Rob Hutchison agrees. Hutchison is with ReMax/ Performance Realty and sells A&S Homes in South Pointe. His opinion is that people are attracted by the buzz of residential living in southwest Winnipeg.
Indeed, South Pointe is a community with very mixed demographics where buyers can revel in the choices. There is a wide range available, says Hutchison, noting there is everything from 1200 square foot homes for first time buyers to million dollar properties with walkouts featuring gorgeous views. As a case in point, Hutchison mentions the

Earlier this year, Pembina Trails School Division announced plans for a new 86,000 square foot facility. They report the institution will open its doors for its first students in 2016. Sited on 8.8 acres, the school will be located at Tim Sale Drive and Waverley Street. When complete there will be facilities for music, sports and recreation, a science and technology classroom and a practical arts centre, in addition to 114 spaces for childcare and special need students. Location is another key driver in demand at South Pointe. In fact, the easy access afforded by the

This means traffic is seldom a concern. I can easily hit the Perimeter or Bishop Grandin to skirt bad traffic and find myself quickly in other parts of the city,” he says. Here, David Borger concludes that it has been the full slate of attributes that have attracted residents who are from a wide range of ages, ethnic mixes and occupations. “This has created a fully blended community,” he says, pointing out that plans are to continue this winning formula as they ready the heavy equipment and trades for Phase II, and the continuation of the excitement that is South Pointe.

Creative Granite Works has been creating custom quartz and granite conversation pieces for five years. Whether it’s a patio table or vanity, each vein speaks something a little different to each customer. “We are a smaller company so we can be much more customer oriented and focus on high quality and customization,” explains Dennis Konrad, owner. Creative Granite Works offers free, in-home consultations where an estimator will sit down with clients, determine what they envision their granite or quartz piece to look like, and its applications. Once customers have determined what they’d like, they are able to view the large slabs in person. “You really get a better idea of the colour, and can see how the grain in the granite flows with these samples, which can be up to 50 or 60 square feet,” states Konrad, adding they offer over four lines of quartz, and 400 different colours of granite. “We offer a very wide field of colours and patterns. Most people are looking for contrast to the cabinets, flooring, or tiles it will be against. Usually if these items are darker, you’ll want a lighter granite, and visa versa.” Konrad loves the unique look of each slab. “There’s going to be a unique element in each portion. Kitchen Craft and RS Capital Developments have been working together on the company’s adult living development, Riverbend Estates in St. Adolphe, just south of the Perimeter. The 25 single bungalow condos feature two bedrooms, two bathrooms, a four-season sun-room, and of course, a spacious kitchen. The open concept kitchen offers staple items such as maple cabinets, and laminate countertops, but can be upgraded depending on the homeowner’s taste. Andy Schultz, Kitchen Craft designer on the project, states an upgraded kitchen could include columns versus standard brackets, granite countertops, and hardwood, full extension drawers. “There’s also various appliance packages if condo owners want to move up to stainless steel,” he says. Laura Stuart of Sutton Group-Kilkenny Real Estate, the realtor on the project, also has a hand in the interior designing of the condos, working with homeowners to create their kitchen package - from colours to countertops. She states more than half of the units feature upgraded elements such as soft close drawers, and bevelled edges, as well as elevated elements suggested by Kitchen Craft. “We have been working with Kitchen Craft for three years, and it’s been a great experience,” states Stuart, adding RS Capital Developments will be partnering with the custom kitchen designers again on their newest venture, Waterside Estates in Transcona, which will likely be available for possession in spring 2015.

Find Your Fix

Who doesn’t enjoy a 30-minute, quick fix renovation show where a horribly dated bathroom gets an amazing overhaul in between commercials? Reality TV at its finest, but not reality when it comes to real life renovations. “Even with the right crew and the right product, renovations never go how they are portrayed in TV shows,” explains Derek Turland, specialty sales at The Floor Show. No one knows this better than Katie Hepworth, a client of Turland’s who had big ideas for her very dated bedroom and ensuite in Boissevain. Having picked her carpet, the installer came, and once the posh, plush surface was laid down, everyone realized there was a visible manufacture’s flaw. Turland quickly ordered Hepworth a new roll of Bond Street wool carpet by Stanton, which was delivered and installed within a couple weeks - a time frame that is quick for carpet claim replacements. For the ensuite bathroom, Hepworth had decided to go completely luxe - marble shower, marble thresholds, and TFS Private Line tile. She set her sights on utilizing all Bianco Venatino, a light marble tile for the shower. Turland suggested some contrast to her original idea- “How about adding Driftwood, a brownishgray tile to complement your vanity and millwork?” he suggested. She accepted. A few other minor snags related to other contractors and Katie was frustrated, but not discouraged, and continued to pursue her dream space with the help of Turland and his team. “Managing your expectations can help with the renovation process,” explains Turland. Before they start any renovation work, they ensure clients understand that what they want might not align with their budget or lifestyle. They then work to achieve a plausible project that still meets customer’s desires. He adds that once people are in the thick of the project, sometimes tensions can run high. “The longer the job, the lower the tolerance,” states Turland. “Life will be turned upside down for a bit. You may have to retire to your bedroom at night on plywood if the flooring is not complete. You may have to compromise - the sample you loved may be unavailable in the timeframe you need, so you’ll have to find another.” His suggestion is to keep communication open, and be prepared for those little blips. B y C arly P eters Even though you tread on it all day long, flooring can be one of the most luxurious elements in the home. From high-grade carpets to oil-rubbed woods, throwing down just any old thing is a thing of the past. Flooring manufacturer, Beaulieu Canada, is one of the largest manufacturers and distributors of wall-to-wall carpet in Canada. The company’s commercial grade fibre, Nylon 66, the toughest product available, is ideal for residential applications in high-traffic areas such as children’s rooms. With numerous colours and patterns, each line is practical and efficient without being boring. But the flooring product that’s taking every room by storm is luxury vinyl plank (LVP), which is fairly new to the Canadian manufacturer. “LVP is the way the industry is going,” states Tim Pariseau, Operations Manager for Curtis Carpets. “There used to be only one or two lines before that offered LVP, but now most manufacturers are offering a line.” So why is LVP pushing real hardwood off the floor? Visually speaking, it looks exactly the same. Made to look like all the different species of hardwood, each plank is embossed with a grain, comes in the same hand-scraped, or wire-brushed style, and in a variety of “stains.”
Where it outperforms hardwood is in its functionality. Pariseau likes to say “wood and water don’t mix,” but with LVP water damage is not an issue, making it an ideal solution for kitchens, dining areas, and even bathrooms. And unlike wood, it’s dent and scratch resistant. LVP is also an easy install. Then guests are given a free personalized sleep assessment that uses pressure-mapping technology where they find out what type of sleep set they should ideally be using.
