the agenda Yes - summer has drawn to an end and the kids have headed back to school, but there’s still plenty to do as we swing into fall. First up is the Fall 2018 Parade of Homes (running until September 30th), the MHBA’s signature event showcasing builders and suppliers to the homebuilding industry in Manitoba. This season’s Parade features 138 entries, including showhomes and condos in Brandon, in communities surrounding Winnipeg, and in 35 neighbourhoods within the city. Here, visitors can visit the display homes and see the latest floor plans and design trends firsthand. Prepare to be wowed, as once again, Manitoba’s builders and developers roll out a wide

range of inspiring designs sited in exceptional residential communities. Creativity abounds in these showhomes, making one wonder where all these fabulous design ideas come from. Inspiration does come from so many sources – in fact, sometimes from the most unusual places. According to the folks at Maric Homes, it comes from “subtle but refined things, from the stitching of leather in a luxury car’s seat to the fit and finish of a finely made shoe. In the end, it’s about aesthetics and craftsmanship.”

skill and impeccable craftsmanship Maric Homes is renowned for. Suppliers to the homebuilding industry also shine in this build, featuring gorgeous products the builder selected for constructing this modern masterpiece. The story and pictures speak for themselves. While perusing Style’s fall 2018 edition, don’t forget to check out the entertainment listings in Stepping Out as the new seasons open for various arts and cultural groups around town. Enjoy!

Let There Be Light Maric Homes plays with light in every corner of this modern masterpiece. B Y C A R LY P E T E R S PHOTOGRAPHY: TEA MARIC

Kal Barteski’s unmistakable artwork graces the dining room wall, while a sleek dining set from Interior Illusions adds contemporary flair to the space.

“Be kind + work hard. Stay humble + smile often. Travel when possible. Never stop learning. Love always.” These words from Manitoba artist Kal Barteski, in her signature black script, flow across the dining room wall of 15 York Valley Way - Maric Homes’ South Pointe modern masterpiece. This visual piece not only represents one of the fine details that anchor Maric’s designs, but also conveys both the intangible and literal light that flows throughout this 3,240-square-foot, four-bedroom home. When initially designing a home, Maric considers the setting; how the lot and orientation of the home can maximize views, space, and light. In the case of 15 York Valley Way, Maric decided to stretch the home’s layout

horizontally across the yard, bringing in as much natural light and as many views of the lake as possible. The home subtly stands out from the rest of the neighbourhood, utilizing a combination of cultured stone and grey acrylic stucco to create a modern but warm exterior. Everything blends seamlessly, including the flat, black panel threecar garage doors, which complement the clean lines of the home and mimic the dark, oversized slab tiles at the front entry. In contrast, natural fir timber slats create points of interest along the garage and front entrance, momentarily breaking up the dark materials and introducing a theme that continues into the home.

The front entryway is defined by dark grey tiles installed by Curtis Carpets and an angled, maple slat wall which divides the space from the step-down living room. As the sun moves throughout the day, the wooden panels cast unique shadows, truly representing the contrast of dark and light that is found throughout the first floor. While the main floor is open concept, each space features its own unique anchor to give the room definition. “The main level is one of the most intelligently planned, beautiful layouts we have ever put together,” states Caroline Maric of Maric Homes, adding they ensured one side of

the home featured as much light as possible through windows with coverings from Interior Illusions that allowed for brightness without compromising privacy, while the other houses the builder’s finishing details. “It flows perfectly from space to space. Each room has its own unique character but still feels completely cohesive.” For the living room, it’s an entertainment unit that fits seamlessly with the space from the foyer’s slat wall to the dining room. The customstained, maple unit features asymmetrical shelving built around a large window, TV, and freestanding record player. The lower portion of the entertainment wall is micro cement, a contemporary material that provides the look and feel of concrete but is lighter and more versatile in application and aesthetics. “We incorporate many subtle details, some not easily noticed, such as the countertop of the micro cement finishing into the sill itself,” says Maric, stating all six trades had to be on the same page to make this subtle element work. “All of these details often seem simple, but require meticulous planning and execution.” Something that’s not so subtle is the home’s black kitchen, which is a stark contrast to

Black flat-panel garage doors complement the large, dark, slab tiles near the front entrance.

the light palette of the rest of the floor. “Our contrasts in either material or colour tend to be more subtle, but we wanted to try something bold here and it worked out incredibly well,” notes Maric. “We looked for a way to showcase the kitchen / dining cabinetry to the rest of the floor and it turned out absolutely breathtaking.” The stained black, rift-cut oak cabinets, which span the entire depth of the south wall from kitchen to dining area, offers one long,

linear storage system. The same side of the kitchen features black Keystone Granite glossy countertops that bounce light onto the glass backsplash. The 10-foot island counter, however, is matte, utilizing engineered quartz with a deep black base and bright white veins that crackle across the top and down the waterfall edge facing the dining area. The island cabinets keep with the muted finish, utilizing black melamine

Much of the home’s light is provided by numerous large windows, but additional pot lights & statement piece fixtures from Super-Lite Lighting are also strategically placed through the main floor. Furnishings, window treatments & accessories from Interior Illusions complete the look.

to house a dishwasher, microwave, additional storage space, and seating for four at one end. The bank of dark cabinets is only broken by the aforementioned Kal Barteski script, which anchors the dining area.

Plush carpeting provided by Curtis Carpets runs throughout the second level of the home, offering a little texture to the space.

The main level is rounded out with a beautiful powder room that will impress any guest with its thoughtful finishes and soft palette, and a mud / laundry room offering ample storage.

“It was an honour to partner up with Kal to create this beautiful wall space in our dining room area. We wanted her to share a positive message that any family walking through or living in the home would identify with, says Maric.

The stairway railing is completed with solid glass panes from Fort Rouge Glass, making the room feel open & light.

The master bedroom reflects the home’s stark colour contrasts with light flooring from Curtis Carpets and dark hued furniture and window treatments from Interior Illusions.

White cabinetry in the ensuite contrasts beautifully with the black marbled floor tiles, which also make up the surround of the oversized, zero-threshold shower featuring glass shower doors from Shodor.

Keeping the light flowing through every corner even includes the stairwell, which can often feel small and confining. The glass railing staircase (from Fort Rouge Glass) features solid maple open risers and allows unrestricted light to pass through from the windows, which offer views of the lake as you make your way upstairs.

separated by a storage tower (a design feature that came about as a result of hearing more and more clients complain about one “messy” spouse and one “clean” spouse). The layout allows each person to deal with their own mess and have their own cabinet with drawers and shelving, but still share the space as a whole.

The second level hallway features banks of windows leading to the master bedroom, where again, front and back vantage points are had, thanks to multiple windows throughout the suite. A double entryway through maple barn doors allows access to the walk-in closet and ensuite.

The white cabinetry here is again in contrast to the black 24 x 24-inch marbled floor tiles, which also make up the surround of the oversized, zero-threshold shower.

The master ensuite features specifically designated his and her freestanding basins

Finally, the lower level of the home is completely finished, and includes another spectacular micro concrete entertainment unit and built-in storage along the rear wall. Even though the space is considered a lower level,

large windows and a light colour palette keep it as bright as the rest of the home. The subtle touches of beauty and finishing materials of a home such as 15 York Valley Way are only achieved when builder and suppliers work together for a common vision. Partnerships, such as that with Springhill Lumber, the company that supplied building materials, play a key role. After four decades of working with Don Henzel, the principal owner / operator of Springhill, the relationship between the two companies is built on a foundation of trust, tremendous mutual respect, and outstanding service which helps elevate each build to new heights.

About the Builder Inspiration for home design can come from the most unlikely sources. For the builders at Maric Homes, it comes from subtle, but refined things – from the stitching of leather in a luxury car’s seat to the fit and finish of a finely made shoe. In the end, it’s about aesthetics and craftsmanship. As Manitoba’s first national award-winning homebuilder, Maric Homes know that intelligently planned homes, unmatched attention to detail, legendary craftsmanship, and unparalleled customer service is what builds a distinct reputation. Over the past five decades, the family-owned company has worked with clients to create truly customized homes that don’t compromise on the details. Focusing on the five values of trust, respect, care, integrity, and pride, Maric Homes demonstrates their commitment in every home with every customer. These efforts do not go unnoticed. Maric Homes was awarded LEED Canada for Homes GOLD Certification for 2015, a level of achievement that’s exceedingly rare in the residential field – a testament to the rigorous nature of Maric Homes’ design / build process and attention to detail. They also proudly hold the distinction of being the first Manitoba homebuilder in history to have won a Canadian Home Builders Association National SAM Award, the highest level of recognition and achievement a homebuilder can attain in Canada, and the only Manitoba homebuilder nominated for the Grand SAM Award. However, reflecting on the company’s five pillars, Maric Homes treats every design – regardless of budget, size, or setting – with the same level of commitment to excellence, aesthetics, and craftsmanship. anada’s newest luxury automobile brand, Genesis, is changing the automotive experience. This bodes well for Manitobans who have tired of the standard practices at most new car dealerships. And, while most car dealerships talk a good game, Genesis is actually creating greater simplicity, value and service by merely listening to what customers want and then delivering. “The intention is to put the customer in control of the purchase experience at a time that is most convenient for them,” says Richard Eccleston, General Manager, Genesis Winnipeg, the Genesis agency operated by the award-winning Murray Automotive Group that opened at 1700 Waverly in the city this past July. He reports that demand for the brand in Manitoba has been such that Genesis decided to open the Manitoba agency two years earlier than originally planned. “Genesis has created an automobile purchase experience like no other. It starts with the simple, transparent, all-inclusive price that includes an exceptional suite of ownership benefits. These benefits include five years complimentary scheduled maintenance and

five years comprehensive warranty. You can customize and reserve your Genesis model, get your trade-in appraised, complete a credit application, schedule at-home delivery all online and in the comfort of your own home. As always, a Genesis Winnipeg Experience Manager is available to assist you.” Essentially, the whole acquisition and ownership experience never requires you to visit the dealership. When it is time to take delivery of your new Genesis, it can take place at your home or office at a time that is convenient to you. When it is time to have your vehicle serviced, Genesis Winnipeg staff comes to you to pick up your vehicle and leave you with another Genesis to drive until they return with your vehicle after it has been serviced. Genesis, a division of Hyundai Motor Company, launched the luxury car brand in 2016 as a standalone product group following the success of the Hyundai Genesis sedan and coupe models, which originally were released in 2009. Today, there are 21 agencies across Canada that offer three model tiers - G70, G80 (+ a sport model), and the exquisite G90. Cars offer standard premium comfort, convenience

and safety features that other companies regard as options. Designs are intuitive. “These cars are very easy to learn and the level of quality and luxury is unsurpassed,” says Richard, who adds that Genesis models have been ranked number one from automobile trade researchers J.D.Power & Associates – beating out all other car manufacturers the past two years in a row.

“Genesis is a market disruptor. We do things differently because luxury owners told us they wanted things this way. The company’s tag line is ‘Apparently, you can buy time.’ Nothing could be more true. The convenience and respect for people’s time means no waiting around showrooms or running back and forth to dealerships with offers. Life is short. Why spend valuable time on petty aggravations at traditional car dealers?” Discover the luxury, comfort, value and convenience of Genesis. Visit genesiswinnipeg.ca for more information.

Rug choices range from hand-spun wool natural dye chobis (where the natural dyes are all hand gathered and all of the wool is spun by hand with a drop spindle) to intricately knotted florals that can feature over 25 different colours and boast over 800 knots per square inch. There are classic designs and contemporary patterns.

Regardless of the rug you select, you can rest assured that they are as durable as they are beautiful. “These rugs can take whatever your family can dish out. Most spills can easily be removed with soap and water,” Leister says.

“The Bunyaad rug program has made a huge difference in the lives of the people of Pakistan who make them,” explains Yousaf Chaman, Bunyaad Director. Bunyaad, which means “foundation” in Urdu, has been responsible for opening girls’ schools in remote areas where girls wouldn’t typically be able to attend school. They have an enrolment of about 800. “This is just one example of many that a fair living wage makes for individuals, families, and the future,” Chaman notes. In 2017, Ten Thousand Villages provided sustainable livelihoods to more than 20,000 artisans from 27 countries through its direct, fair trade purchases of quality, handcrafted products. “Our goal is to educate customers about the value of a quality hand knotted carpet and the difference fair trade makes. True quality rugs can be produced only when people are paid a fair and living wage,” he points out.

Handcrafted rugs beautify homes and help artisans If you want a quality rug that looks like a piece of artwork and will last for generations, you won’t want to miss the two-week rug event being held November 6 to 20 at Ten Thousand Villages, located at 134 Plaza Drive. “Each year, Ten Thousand Villages holds a fair trade rug event that brings Ten Thousand Villages Canadian rug inventory to Winnipeg for a special showing. The rugs move around to various Ten Thousand Villages stores across Canada in order to give everyone a chance to fair trade their floors,” explains Jenni Leister, Director of Operations. “We have about 15 rug events in Canada every year and our stores in the United States host about 35 rug events.” North America’s oldest and largest fair trade organization, Ten Thousand Villages partners with independent, small-scale artisan groups,

co-ops and workshops to bring their wares to North American markets.

An added bonus is that you can take the rugs home on approval before purchasing. “We want our customers to be thrilled with their rugs and confident in their purchase,” says Chaman. “As with any piece of art, these rugs will grace your home for generation to come,” he adds. “They last forever, so if you move, they will likely move with you.” For more information about the Ten Thousand Villages rug event, go to https://www.tenthousandvillages.ca/rugs

When you purchase a handcrafted rug made with fair trade practices, you will not only be beautifying your home, you will also be improving the lives of the artisans who make them, Leister points out. “These rugs are beautiful, functional, individual works of art,” she says. “Each artisan chooses the colours and designs they want to work on so each rug is unique. Every job - from preparing the wool, designing the rug, knotting, and finishing - is done by hand and fairly compensated,” she notes. “When people are paid fairly they can focus on their work, which means a high quality rug for the consumer and a fair paying job for the artisan. It’s a win-win for everyone,” she adds. AUTUMN 2018 | STYLE MANITOBA | 25

JOHN COLTRANE Both Directions at Once – The Lost Album

204-292-9394 556 ACADEMY ROAD GRACEANDCOMPANYLTD.COM

(Impulse!/Universal) This is a revelation – a complete album, as well as alternate takes on the double-CD deluxe edition, from titanic saxophonist John Coltrane and his well-travelled band of McCoy Tyner (piano), Jimmy Garrison (bass) and Elvin Jones (drums), recorded in Rudy Van Gelder’s studio in 1963 and discovered recently, more than 50 years after Coltrane’s death. These are not the table scraps served so often in the cause of history, but robust performances with ample surprises. One, listed only as “Untitled Original 11383” is a buoyant feature for soprano saxophone in the lineage of “My Favourite Things.” Another untitled work features the straight horn again, this time in cooler, swinging mode. The master tenor saxophonist stretches muscles and wits in top, torrid form through four takes of “Impressions.” The last of four takes celebrates Jones as a perpetual-motion machine, while stalwart Garrison thrills with a deep, searching solo..

Balance always characterizes the great piano trios in jazz, with the distinction between soloist and rhythm section acceding to a true group music. Sublime American composer Carla Bley has perfected it with her well-travelled trio with bass guitarist Steve Swallow and saxophonist Andy Sheppard; 20 years of collaboration have made them virtually a chamber ensemble. Andando el Tiempo is stunning. The three-part title suite, written for a friend’s battle with addiction, is pensive and lovely in Bley’s signature style, with a warm tenor solo in the first movement, a keen bass venture in the second, and a rallying closing movement that manages to be rousing and quizzical in the same heartbeat. “Saints Alive!” relaxes in the blues before the skittish “Naked Bridges/Diving Brides,” where Bley’s witty piano playing suggests Erik Satie in jazz waltz time.

Tonal density has long fascinated composer Roscoe Mitchell, whether in the astonishing group activity of Art Ensemble of Chicago or in his solo music. Wielding a music shop’s worth of saxophones and woodwinds, and so many percussion instruments he devised a cage in which to strike them, he virtually is his own group. Bells for the South Side takes it further, with Mitchell leading four different trios and then encouraging new combinations. It can mean a mighty wallop when two to three drummers are unleashed or the multiple horns squabble, but there are movements when the music is thinned to the starkest strokes – a funereal opening of piano and tubular bells, an electronic haze on the second disc, or a horn dialogue anchored to Mitchell’s huffing bass saxophone – and Mitchell as composer and leader measures all masterfully.

BOOKSHELF Fire Sermon (Coach House) by Jamie Quatro

A stunning debut novel by American writer Jamie Quatro. Maggie is a writer, happily married, or so it seems. So why is she so attracted to poet James? A devastating portrayal of a wife in love with another man, a story of obsession, devotion, and, interestingly, faith. It is, Maggie says, the best thing that ever happened to her.

The Cowkeeper’s Wish

(Douglas & McIntyre) by Kristen Den Hartog and Tracy Kasaboski On April 10th, 1815, Mount Tambora in Indonesia erupted with such force that weather patterns changed, with snow in June and food shortages in Europe. In this lyric essay, Rachel Lebowitz connects these events with others like the Battle of Waterloo (also 1815) and Word War I (100 years later), Hans Christian Anderson and Greek Myth, the last Frost Fair on the River Thames, and modern parenting in this lovely, fluid, thoughtful book.

Hummingbird

(Locarno) by Tristan Hughes Illustrated by Natasha Donovan (Highwater/Portage & Main Press) A beautiful book by Gitxsan writer Brett David Huson about the importance of the sockeye salmon to his people from northwestern British Columbia. As it depicts the way the fish travel via the Skeena River, this picture book makes the interconnections of animals, water, soil, seasons, and people clear. Ostensibly for children, adults will enjoy the dramatic, stunning illustrations by Natasha Donovan, and might learn something about environmental balance and cultural knowledge.

Less a novel than a cabinet of curiosities, The Fairy Tale Museum is reminiscent of fairy tales and folk stories, with its collection of dreamy, sometimes nightmarish vignettes. The pages are full of strange events and characters, from a vampire who keeps falling asleep and Little Black Riding Hood, to an assortment of woodland creatures and a fortuneteller or two. Susannah M. Smith has created an original, grotesque, beautiful, and out-of-this-world book.

Bringing out the best in you What makes you feel beautiful? Is it a great haircut? An amazing colour? Or an exceptional experience? Whatever’s on your list of must-haves, the goal at Colors Beauty & Wellness is to achieve it for their guests. This salon has an incredible team that they are very proud of. Jackie Krocker, CBW Master Stylist, captured it all for Amber (pictured here). Her professional recommendations, skill and EuforaColor delivered amazing results on all fronts for this lovely businesswoman and mother of three, providing her with a whole new level of confidence.

Clinching the Look Moody. That was the one word that put the style team into overdrive to plan this shoot. Keeping the dress simple, and not straying too far off from Kristi’s natural beauty, the team at Hairology came up with this look. Cool undertones help bring out the warming glow of her makeup - like how August falls upon us, hot but cold. The warmth of the browns brings out the icy tones in her eyes, complementing Kristi’s soft, bronzed skin. Popping on a burgundy lip helps bring the grunge factor into play, completing the whole look. Jackie decided the length of Amber’s hair was dragging her down, so she gave her an everyday short wearable haircut and enhanced her blonde. Using a technique called “Petaling,” she created added interest and dimension for Amber’s hair. This technique allows for less maintenance as hair grows out when taking a guest blonde. For those with fine hair, Petaling also makes for a fuller looking root area, giving added volume to the hair…. and it doesn’t have to be purple. Jordan Rempel, Makeup Artist extraordinaire, Aesthetician and Hairstylist at CBW complemented Amber’s look with a welldesigned makeup application, bringing out her already beautiful features using SST Makeup. The soft photographic makeup application worked with the tones in her skin, enhancing her overall hair and fashion palette. Celebrating 15 years!!!! Wow! Time has flown by and we are now in our 15th year of business. So many thanks to all who have made Rituals what it is today - awesome clients, great staff, family and friends who have stuck by us and supported us. Also, thanks to Style Manitoba for always supporting, working with us, and giving us this wonderful publication to share our work with all of you. Grateful. Along the way, many changes have happened - some planned, some not. However, competition has been a big part of our growth and hair artistry. It has been the creative outlet for expression of our minds and our visions come to life. Over the last 30 years of my career, I have competed, won and placed in many photography competitions, and just wanted to express myself in hair. With Pearl’s help, we created the work featured here, and decided to share it with everyone. I hope readers like it and appreciate the hours of work that go into every shoot. The Rituals’ team (Kirsten and Sussana) entered Contessas this year, so wish them luck! When the judging is done, we will release their work, which is fabulous. Something for Everyone New lounge elevates spa experience BY DONNA MINKUS

T

hermëa has been providing the ultimate in spa experiences since opening its doors to Winnipeggers in 2015. The year-round Scandinavian-inspired spa has something for everyone, allowing guests to customize a Nordik experience beginning with the Thermal spa package and the option of adding a massage or body treatment and a gourmet selection from the restaurant. Now Thermëa has expanded its experience to include a fourseason lounge featuring a gas fireplace – ideal for fall and winter gatherings. Nested in the forested area adjacent to Crescent Drive Golf Course, Thermëa is part of the Groupe Nordik family whose mission it is to transform the lives of people one visit at a time, says Tannis Hogue, General Manager at Thermëa. “We promote and provide enriching wellness experiences where people can heal, connect, rejuvenate and practice self-care. When we are well, we are the best versions of ourselves: we dream, we remember what it is to live, and ultimately, we can give others the love and care they deserve,” Hogue says. “Our overall goal is to create opportunities for people to experience wellness in a variety of innovative and enriching ways.” Thermëa ’s wellness experience offers guests the opportunity to select a spa package that meets their needs and fits their budget. The packages range from the Thermal Experience which gives guests full day access to spa facilities including the outdoor pools, saunas and recently revamped sandy beach to packages that include hotel stays and gourmet meals

from Resto, which offers a selection of dishes inspired by local farm to table cuisine, Hogue explains. The recent expansion of Restö to include a four-season lounge adds a new social dimension to the spa, she points out. On a warm day, the sliding doors are open and guests can feel the breeze and hear the sounds of the Iceber waterfall. On cooler days, the fireplace and heat lamps keep guests toasty. “It’s the place to have a glass of wine and share a meal between friends in a warm and welcoming setting. Guests can pair a baked brie or Charcuterie board with a signature Thermëa cocktail, or one of the new tap beers including Manitoba’s Farmery.”

The Massana is the therapeutic experience at Thermëa, providing registered massage therapy and specialty esthetic treatments, including Thermëa ’s newest body treatment, which helps detoxify and purify the whole body – thanks to the many antibacterial properties of Himalayan salt. First, four Himalayan salt stones are warmed and placed on the guest’s back. The Himalayan salt stones open your skin pores to prepare for exfoliation – the body treatment’s final stage. The exfoliating scrub recipe, which combines Himalayan salt grains and a blend of Comfort Zone essential oils, helps purify the body, regenerate and soften the skin while producing a calming effect. The treatment is topped off with an application of a rich, quality moisturizing cream. “People love coming to Thermëa in the fall to enjoy the warmth of our saunas, a soak in our hot baths, and lounge around a fire”, Hogue says. “As a tourist destination, we provide exclusive packages with our partner hotels ensuring their guests have ease of access to Thermëa with a reservation, including peak holiday times.” On plans for the fall, Hogue notes, “Our Sauna Meisters will be competing in our Aufguss competition, enhancing guests experience in the Finlandia sauna with new music and winter essential oils. And to wrap up the year, by popular demand, we are planning our next kids experience and holiday retail activities throughout the city.” For more information, go to www.Thermëa.ca

One Job That Nobody Likes— Cleaning Out The Fridge It can be nasty but here are a few great tips to make it efficient:

1

Toss all spoiled and stale dated foods using the smell test; expiry dates; and this guideline (if in doubt throw it out): Cooked meat within 5 days; uncooked meat should be used or frozen within 2 days of purchase although ham can last up to 2 weeks; mayo including anything made with it should be thrown out if sitting outside of fridge longer than 8 hours; eggs can last 3-5 weeks in fridge; hard cheese can last for weeks; cream cheese just 2-3 weeks; cottage or ricotta only lasts about 10 days; butter 2 weeks; Produce check for spoilage and in many cases spoiled parts can be trimmed. This guide does not include fish and seafood.

2

Daily Maintenance: wipe up spills immediately and wipe off all jars and bottles after using; throw out food based on the “smell test” and expiry dates. Tip: Marking expiry dates on packaging with a Sharpie can make expiry dates easier to see and will help you develop awareness.

3

Remove trays and compartments and soak in a sink with warm water and baking soda.

4

Wash the interior of your fridge, detailing small areas and door seals. Rinse with clear water and a clean cloth. Dry with a clean dry cloth.

At Colors Beauty and Wellness, inspired dedicated artists do their upmost to ensure clients enjoy each and every experience in their salon, and clients feel special knowing they are being pampered with eco-friendly products that are good for them, their stylists, and of course, the environment. “Our focus and culture has been built upon providing exceptional service for our guests and quality in everything we do,” says salon owner Joanne Rempel. “Our mantra has always been ‘We are not just a place to come to… we are a place to come back to’.” Located at 1072 Pembina Hwy, Colors Beauty and Wellness is a full service salon, specializing in a full range of hair and aesthetic services for the entire family. The team consists of 12 stylists, two aestheticians, makeup artists, hand and foot care, a nutritionist and wellness specialist, and Salon Manager, Courtney. The team is trained in numerous beauty treatments such as lash lifting, permanent lash extensions, micro-blading brow enhancements, and hair extensions, Rempel says. “For the busy professional, in addition to our regular pedicure and facial, we offer a service called “Head to Toe,” an express detox facial and pedicure guaranteed to surprise and delight,” she points out. When Rempel took over the salon in 2003, it was a small six-chair salon called Colors for Hair. Within two years, she renovated and expanded the salon to 12 workstations, four aesthetic rooms including a Health Canada Certified area for work such as micro-blading.

A beauty salon that pampers with eco-friendly products “When we renovated in 2005, we became Colors Beauty and Wellness – a full service salon focused on using eco-friendly products and practices in the salon,” Rempel says. “Initially, our shift to eco-body friendly products was for the health of my team, who had their hands in products for 8 to 10 clients a day,” she says. “Clients were appreciative of our direction and so we evolved into a green culture.” “As I did more research, I concluded that for products to work, they didn’t need to be toxic. That’s when we adopted the Eufora product line and professional colour line, which became our flagship products; followed by SST SkinCare and Cosmetics, a Canadian based eco-body friendly company.” Eufora is a people and planet friendly company known for technical and business education, Rempel points out, so it quickly captured her interest as well as that of her team, who are committed to ongoing education. “Eufora became the company that we felt closest to in values and culture, and therefore chose to partner with as a salon,” she says.

A veteran of the beauty industry, Rempel, who has spent more than three decades in the industry, now works internationally as an educator for Eufora, its core hair line product, and assisted in the creation of the EuforaColor. “I was so impressed with the education and green philosophy, I became an educator for Eufora International, which led to Don and Beth Bewley, the Founders of Eufora, requesting I work with them on the creation of their colour line, EuforaColor. It was a professional highlight and pleasure to go to Italy to work with chemists and formulators to develop the colour brand. Through my work with Eufora International, I have been able to explore an avenue of this industry that is close to my heart,” Rempel says. “I have the pleasure to work with an incredibly talented and committed team of artists, including my two daughters and my niece. The entire team is my family,” she says. “We are extremely honoured to have been chosen by Salon Today to be among of the Top 200 Salons in North America, as well as awarded as an industry Leader by Apprenticeship Manitoba,” she adds. elebrating their 30th year in business, Durabuilt Windows & Doors has been delivering the kind of innovation and product beauty that has made them consistent leaders in both the new home and replacement window market. Based in Edmonton with locations in Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba, Durabuilt has made its name by offering a custom approach where each order is seen as a one-off and every customer is unique. “This is where we differ from big box retailers and Internet suppliers where you get what you get,” says Jeff Ward, Director of Sales and Marketing with Durabuilt Windows & Doors. “Every window we produce is custom built to the exact specifications that you provide. Size, performance options, colour and hardware can all be personalized to fit within your design, budget and ultimately your home.” Jeff points out that with current regulations on window manufacturers, there is a standard consistency in regard to product performance. “Across the board, windows from all manufacturers need to meet performance standards to meet building codes; ours meet and exceed these standards and go beyond the norm with our offering utilizing steel reinforcements that allow our windows to offer some exciting window wall features. We also have a fashion slant that other manufacturers don’t have,” he continues, adding that they have invested in technologies that allow them to offer unique laminate films that deliver strong décor elements. Over the past 30 years, Durabuilt has retained its attention to detail while stepping up the performance with its 200,000 square foot plant in Edmonton. Indeed, while today’s operation is a far cry from the old days and its 10,000 square foot operation where 11 employees hand built each PVC window, today’s manufacturing system uses world-class robotics and is still targeted on each individual customer. “We are a nine-time Consumers’ Choice Award recipient, as well as a recognized Top 100 Window & Door Manufacturer,” says Jeff. “We are also a preferred supplier to multiple builders in the Canadian prairies.”

Durabuilt windows are found in home designs from award winning builders such as Foxridge Homes and Dwell Homes. In the Dwell Homes properties in Winnipeg’s River Heights neighbourhood, new builds include massive front window walls. These designs are accomplished using Durabuilt’s Vivacé window system, where steel reinforcement nests inside the largest chambers to allow for large window wall configurations. Vivacé is also beautifully conceived with laminate finishes inside and out, as well as having larger vinyl frames and sashes where thick outer walls combined with dead air chambers provide exceptional thermal values. Builders like the fact that Durabuilt products go beyond standard window sizing for a stronger custom appearance. They also like products such as Alpha, a ‘real’ tripane slider that meets the tough demands of a prairie winter. In fact, Alpha recently won a SAM Award (Calgary Home Builders Association) for innovation.

Durabuilt is presently at 72 Durand Road in the St. Boniface Industrial Park off Dugald Road. Their new Design Gallery and distribution office is under construction on Debaets Road and is on track to open by the end of this year. This new facility will join other centres across the West where builders, architects, and homeowners can drop in to collaborate with members of the Durabuilt team. “Relationships are how we grow our business. The Design Gallery locations are places where we can really work one-on one with both industry professionals and homeowners interested in stepping up to better windows and door systems,” concludes Jeff, who invites members of the building industry and the public to drop into their Durand Road location to discover a rising star in Canada’s window and door trade.

“Alpha offers a true tripane window at a price point more attractive than casement windows. It also offers a monoframe design that is extremely water and airtight, easy to install and comes in a range of on trend colours,” notes Jeff. Builders and homeowners also like the way Durabuilt windows work with each other. “Today we find that people look room by room to determine the best window for the space. We can provide consistent colours while mix and matching capability from our product range to meet the energy and design requirements of each property.” AUTUMN 2018 | STYLE MANITOBA | 37

OUTDOORL I V I N G Fall for Water Features The tranquility of falling water can’t be understated. In a residential yard setting it not only provides a relaxing auditory experience but also visual interest and a liveliness you just can’t get with any other feature. Whether it’s a small bubbling pond or full-scale waterfall formation, 3 Seasons Landscaping can help homeowners create their own personal aquatic getaway. Pictured here is one of the largest waterfalls they’ve ever constructed for a residential client. The Ontario-sourced boulders were so huge they had to be installed with a backhoe / loader. And, the company had developed a design and layout for the project - the irregular boulders meant the structure evolved on a rock by rock basis. “The boulders only fit together a certain way and so putting it together is like a puzzle. You figure out the arrangement, and ultimately, the overall look as you move along,” explains Paul Szakacs of 3 Seasons Landscaping. Along with being a lovely addition to the yard, the waterfall also had a functional element, acting as the retaining wall that splits the

height of the yard. From this front yard feature a meandering stream winds around to the back of the property down to a second large pond in the backyard. In addition to creating the water feature, the company designed and installed the plantings around the waterfall and throughout the yard.

“Waterfalls and water features / ponds call for a lot of rock, so it’s important to balance with gardens and plantings for the overall look. Otherwise, it just looks too sterile,” says Szakacs. 3 Seasons Landscaping is a full service designbuild firm with 30 years of experience creating hard and softscapes across Manitoba.

Inside and Outside Play You never know what you’re going to get for weather during Manitoba’s fall. Often it’s still warm enough to enjoy outdoor sports, but when the sun sets earlier there’s a need for indoor recreation. Whether you want to still shoot some hoops during cooler weather, or soothe the day away on a yoga floor, Athletic Flooring Systems can create a customized flooring solution for indoor or outdoor applications. The company is Manitoba’s dealer and distributor of Sport Court flooring, the world’s largest outdoor court builder. Each outdoor game court is customizable, from colour to size, and allows for multi-sport play on one court. Everything from volleyball, to pickle ball, to inline skating can be played on the surface. As one of the safest products on the market, Sport Court offers the best traction and least abrasion in the industry, perfect for families with kids. It also features Ortho Cush for shock absorption, and Lateral Forgiveness, providing reduced stress and strain on ligaments, knees, joints, and lower back so your family can play longer and safer.

UV stabilized for summer sun, and tough enough to flood over for your own skating or hockey rink, the company’s 15-year guarantee ensures your investment lasts for many seasons to come.

Sport Court is just one option for getting your sweat on. Athletic Flooring Systems can supply and install virtually any type of sports flooring from any manufacturer. The company can create the perfect home gym floor or provide a place of pure bliss for yoga or your own private dojo. AUTUMN 2018 | STYLE MANITOBA | 39

Everyone loves a Parade! Manitoba has another flag it can wave proudly over the entries in this year’s Fall Parade of Homes. According to Lanny McInnes, president, Manitoba Home Builders Association (MHBA), the province can lay claim to the largest such parade of homes in the country in 2018. “There is nothing else that is at the same scale or scope in Canada,” says McInnes. “It’s a unique opportunity for people to see the latest trends in building, finishing and décor in a home setting.” McInnes says that other cities host parades that are only held over the weekend and include maybe 30 entries, which pales in comparison to the keystone province. This year’s Parade of Homes runs three weeks (from September 8-30) and will feature 138 entries in total, including showhomes and condos in Brandon, in communities surrounding Winnipeg, and in 35 neighbourhoods in Winnipeg. Although it’s hard to tell exactly how many people take in the Parade of Homes each year, McInnes says a safe estimate is in the tens of thousands. “This is our signature event that brings the most attention to our builder members,” he says. “It’s an unparalleled marketing opportunity for homebuilders to collectively showcase their homes and condos in a way, generally speaking, that they wouldn’t be able to do individually.”

ALL IN STOCK WATERPROOF PLANKING ON SALE NOW!

Visitors can see the homes firsthand and get to know what the finished product will really look like. It gives people a chance to see, for example, what the flooring will really look like when it’s installed or what a tap will look like when it’s installed, rather than in a row of other taps. It also offers a glimpse at all the latest technology local builders are incorporating into their designs. For those planning their Parade of Homes tour, a good place to start is the MHBA website, which was recently updated. It now includes a mobile-friendly feature that allows prospective homebuyers to see the showhomes on a map and chart their own tour of Parade entries. The MHBA also has a strong social media presence with accounts on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook. McInnes says they plan to use those platforms to profile homes during the Parade, as well as profile the winners after the Parade. He also teases that they’re bringing back a social media contest this year. Watch for more details about the contest during this year’s Fall Parade of Homes. Bridgwater delivers flair

T

The neighbourhoods of Bridgwater have a lot going for them. Located in the south end of Winnipeg between Waverley and Kenaston, Bridgwater is a multi-development community that has captured the attention of homebuyers since its first days back in the mid 2000s. Today the neighbourhoods of Bridgwater include Bridgwater Forest, Bridgwater Lakes and Bridgwater Trails, as well as a Town Centre. Altogether these sites offer thousands of new home opportunities amid one of the most sought after residential destinations in Winnipeg. The Bridgwater neighbourhoods are home to some of Winnipeg’s most inviting new home designs. Builders include a Who’s Who of Manitoba’s leading new home companies that have brought their ‘A’ game to the development. Here are some prime examples. At 352 Willow Creek Road, Artista Homes has built a 2,374 square foot bungalow that features a gorgeous walkout basement that backs onto one of Bridgwater’s beautiful lakes. The property also offers five bedrooms, a tandem three-car garage and soaring cathedral ceilings in a package that delivers a unique blend of décor and functionality that has become a mainstay of Artista’s success in the market.

approachable sophistication that is characteristic of Arlt designs. Principal Jason Arlt describes the showhome as a four-bedroom, 3,300 squarefoot walkout with a central dining room that links the main level in a cohesive pattern. Arlt is known for their special touches and this property is no exception. For example, the kitchen offers covered deck access and the interior is complemented by a double- sided fireplace that carries through from the foyer to the dining room. The ceilings are 10-foot throughout with the entry rising a foot higher to deliver a dramatic entranceway. Under the tandem three-car garage, the designers have used the backyard elevation to allow for an out of the way storage shed. “Over the past 40 years, we have grown because we have listened to our clients and created new homes that allow our client’s personalities to shine through to the finished home design. Our display at 16 Willow Brook Road is a great case in point,” says Arlt.

Discovery Homes is displaying 300 Cherrywood Road in Bridgwater. This property is a two-storey, 2,300 square foot, three-bedroom offering with 2.5 baths and an upper loft. Called ‘The Drake,’ this residence delivers elegance with a contemporary flair. “This home has 700 square feet of open space that makes it ideal for entertaining,” says Julie Smith, General Manager and Designer at Discovery Homes. She notes further that the property is filled with special touches, such as the built-in wall-to-wall entertainment unit and the 20 x 10-foot raised deck. “There is an open loft on the second floor, as well as a 500-square foot master suite that looks out to a private balcony.” Find out more about the neighbourhoods of Bridgwater. Visit www.bridgwaterneighbourhoods.com for more information.

“We are known for our modern contemporary approach to design,” says Artista Home’s Frank Cotroneo, who points to the unique wood clad appearance with high peaked roofline complete with solid fir beams for a decidedly ‘modern mountain’ look to the Willow Creek Road residence. Arlt Homes is also present in the neighbourhood with their display at 16 Willow Brook Road at Bridgwater Lakes. iscovery Homes’ display property at 9 Falcon Cove in St. Adolphe’s Tourond Creek development is setting a new standard for relaxed lifestyle options. The home is a 1,725 square-foot, two-bedroom, two-bath country retreat called ‘The Kingsley.’ “Tourond Creek is close to Winnipeg and its services, but is in a country setting in the community of St. Adolphe. This means no growth fees such as those charged in the city. And, the lots are estate sized,” says Julie Smith, General Manager and Designer at Discover Homes.

She reports that the design of 9 Falcon Cove fits perfectly with the Tourond Creek lifestyle. “There is a custom exterior that features exposed timber trusses and a 12-foot high entrance clad in natural stone. Inside the plan is open to maximize family living.”

Opti-Myst uses unique ultrasonic technology, water vapour and lighting effects to create the ultimate illusion of a gently dancing flame. There is also a side entry oversized double garage. The side entry leads to a convenient mudroom and laundry area, and the large garage space means lots of room for toys or a workshop. Discover the advantages of country living on the edge of Winnipeg. The property offers a refined two-tone open galley style kitchen that comes with an 11-foot island. Counters are Silestone quartz and flooring is wide plank rustic. “There is an abundance of oversized windows throughout to contribute to the open airy feel of the home,” says Julie. The master bedroom in this bungalow property overlooks the gorgeous backyard and leads to a covered deck. There is also an attached ensuite that comes with a spa tub and massive twoperson custom tiled shower. Perfect Harmony BY TODD LEWYS

P

icture this: coming home to a richlyappointed home that’s immersed in serene, natural surroundings - and that has its own private spa. “That home would be Huntington Homes’ nature-inspired showhome at 356 Willow Creek Rd. in Bridgwater Trails,” says Rob Swan of Huntington Homes. “We’ve designed a home that co-exists with its natural surroundings in perfect harmony,” he says. “Natural materials and an interior filled with light and beautiful nature views work together to create a tranquil, calming feel.” That calming feel starts with the 2,517 sq. ft. walkout bungalow’s exterior, which features natural, weathered castle stone. Inside, a great room with high ceilings, huge windows and spectacular lighting was designed to serve as a place of renewal and great place to entertain. “It’s a truly stunning space,” says Swan. “This area is the start of an organic home that’s naturally bright, elegant and spacious. The high

ceilings - they’re 14 feet in the great room and 10 feet in the bedroom area - provide a feeling of space, volume warmth and comfort. Huge windows on its rear wall let in loads of light and stunning wetland / lake views.” Spectacular rows of recessed LED lighting on the ceiling above provide stylish illumination at night, while a huge sunroom adjacent to the main living area provides an area to relax and access to a deck that overlooks the lake behind the home. Meanwhile, the modern, well-appointed chefstyle kitchen and dining room together with the great room are ready to provide the function and style required for your family to enjoy and entertain guests effortlessly. “The kitchen is a striking yet functional space with a walk-through pantry that connects to a huge mud / laundry room that will allow you to bring groceries directly in to the kitchen,” says Swan.

“As amazing as those areas are, you also get your own private spa, which includes a large twoperson shower and steam room – and lounge area with a National Geographic-inspired mural. It’s a gorgeous space that rivals any retreat or hotel spa,” states Swan. “It’s the ultimate space to relax in.” As per usual, 356 Willow Creek will also feature an impeccable floor plan and will be built to Huntington’s standard specifications, the highest of any builder in Winnipeg. “This home is going to offer its owners a calm, uncluttered place to relax after working hard all day,” he says. “Best of all, it will feature the enduring style and quality that have been Huntington Homes’ calling card for over 30 years. It’s a spectacular, liveable home that someone is going to enjoy calling home for a long time.” Huntington Homes…. Built Like No Other.

As spectacular as the great room is, the master suite has been designed as a retreat for the owners. “It features a serene wetland view, a massive walk-in closet, and gorgeous ensuite with rustic tiled walls and floor, as well as a standalone soaker tub with pebble stone floor.” The kids’ wing has a unique design that’s extremely functional – large bedrooms and a unique shared bathroom arrangement. Head downstairs to the expansive walkout basement via a stunning open-riser staircase, and you will find an incredible media area and an entertainment area with wet bar.

HOMES & Neighbourhoods

According to Realtor® Mark Penner with Royal Lepage, the site is currently 85 percent sold. “We still have some amazing creek walkouts with north and south views,” he says, adding that lot sizes are 10,000 square feet at minimum. “These lot sizes mean designs can offer ample space for country-sized living. The proximity to Winnipeg also means easy access to shopping, healthcare, education and activities, but with a lower tax hit and no impact fee.” Countryside Crossing has been on the go for several years. Today it is viewed as a mature development with all landscaping and infrastructure in place. This means less construction noise and more opportunity for easy living.

City access, country lifestyle

Countryside Crossing continues to wow homebuyers who see the community as a great way to step up to estate sized lots while still having close access to Winnipeg services. Indeed, Countryside Crossing offers an East St. Paul postal code even though the neighbourhood is located inside the Perimeter Highway just off Henderson.

Homebuyers are also drawn to Countryside Crossing thanks to its unique approach to builder selection. In most new home communities, buyers select homes from builders who own the lot. At Countryside Crossing, buyers are not tied to any one builder. Once a lot is selected, a buyer can choose any builder they desire and, as long as basic architectural guidelines are met, designs are as unique as the owner. It’s a short drive to discover the excitement and lifestyle of country living. For more information visit www.countrysidecrossing.com

Momentum Continues in Prairie Pointe B Y K E L LY G R AY

P

rairie Pointe continues to move forward as one of Winnipeg’s premier new home communities and is now in its third stage of development. Located in South Winnipeg off Kenaston Blvd., the community is now releasing its first group of amenity lots with availability this fall. “There will be approximately 40 amenity lots to offer in this stage,” says David Borger, Vice-President Development with Ladco, the Manitoba company behind Prairie Pointe. He reports that lots will feature both park and lake views with frontage ranging from 42-foot to 50-foot widths. “These are the first amenity sites to go on sale in Prairie Pointe and we have a number of excellent builders involved,” he notes, mentioning Hillside Homes, KDR Homes, Ventura Homes and Artista Homes. Borger comments that sales have been strong in Prairie Pointe since 2015 when the 640-acre, 2200 lot development launched as an extension of the hugely popular South Pointe neighbourhood. Slightly larger than South Pointe at buildout, Prairie Pointe will include facets such as 75 acres of space for rental, townhome and condo multi-family properties. Like South Pointe, the new development will link to active transportation networks as well as additional paths, transit and auto routes. Prairie Pointe’s green spaces will also include playgrounds, sports fields and retention ponds. The future will bring a variety of commercial enterprises and will offer key commercial, retail and professional services. This year’s Fall Parade of Homes in Prairie Pointe will celebrate 10 homebuilders each featuring showhomes. For example, Hilton Homes will offer a 2000-square foot, two-storey property at 31 Skyline Drive.

“This home has great value for the growing young family,” says Spencer Curtis, Sales Manager at Hilton Homes. He mentions the property’s unique covered deck spaces on both main and second levels as examples. “The main floor deck is attached to the kitchen with piped-in gas for a BBQ. This deck delivers a seamless extension to the interior space and offers great lifestyle enhancement. The upper level deck also offers ample flex-space that adds to this lifestyle,” he says, adding that 31 Skyline’s architecture takes residents beyond the traditional. Curtis reports that they have been involved with Prairie Pointe since its early days. “We were excited to be part of this community from the very beginning. The developer, Ladco, is well known locally. They have developed some of Winnipeg’s best planned communities and have continued to build on this success with communities such as Prairie Pointe.” REALTOR® Jason Kippen agrees. Jason is marketing 27 Skyline, a Randall Home design

that is among the Fall Parade entries. According to Jason, 27 Skyline Drive is indicative of both Randall’s family-forward approach to design and Prairie Pointe’s strong community angle. He describes the house as a 1822-square foot, threebedroom, two-storey that features an open airy main floor. “This property feels like home. Many showhomes deliver a ‘don’t touch, don’t stand here’ feeling. This property delivers a relaxed touch that is just like the neighbourhood itself,” he explains, also noting that Prairie Pointe is the kind of community where kids play hockey on the streets and footpaths are frequently filled. David Borger invites everyone to investigate the advantages of Prairie Pointe. “Take the drive out to Prairie Pointe and discover the choices, the natural beauty, and the lifestyle opportunities,” he says, inviting people to check out www.ladco. mb.ca for more information on this popular family neighbourhood. arkhill Homes has been making a custom difference to lifestyles for over 30 years. One of Winnipeg’s leading homebuilders, Parkhill has based its success on its custom approach to each customer. “We take the time to listen and discover a client’s needs and then work to deliver their vision,” says Lori Thorsteinson, Broker/Owner, Loren Realty and Sales Manager with Parkhill Homes. “We don’t do 100 homes a year. In fact, we give our complete attention to each individual property and client. We are all about the details and it shows in our projects,” she adds, noting that Parkhill’s mission is to facilitate clients’ ideas from concept to completion. A great example of Parkhill’s thinking can be found at 11 Prairie Grass Lane in Oak Bluff West. This property offers an open airy interior that features great room to kitchen connectivity. “This property reflects current relaxed lifestyles,” notes Lori, pointing to the calm colour palette and flexibility of the design. Detail forward aspects include tray ceilings in the great room to provide space definition, a double-sided fireplace, and waterfall edges on the kitchen counters.

“Stainless steel appliances are still in big demand, as are kitchens with island work areas and bathrooms with separate soaker tubs and glassed in shower units. At 11 Prairie Grass Lane, we have achieved the open feel by offering design attributes such as open shelving in the kitchen,” says Lori. “We know that people spend a lot of time indoors during our colder months. We build homes that help people take their lifestyles inside. Our designs pay special attention to kitchens, great rooms and master suites. We like to think that life is just better in a Parkhill Home,” she states, pointing out that they have grown the business over the past 30 years through word of mouth and repeat trade. “We will attempt just about anything. We view each project as an opportunity to push the envelope. Exciting designs that contribute to lifestyle is what Parkhill Homes thrives on. Our display at 11 Prairie Grass Lane is indicative of this thinking,” she explains, inviting people to investigate the opportunities of better living through great design. connected streets – and where there’s a better chance to get to know their neighbours,” adds Mosher.

“The sunsets are simply stunning,” says Qualico Communities’ Tara Reid.

She cites Broadview’s two-storey 1,817 square foot showhome on Kestrel Way as one example.

“The broad, open spaces make RidgeWood West feel like it’s miles away from the city,” Reid continues, “but it’s just minutes from downtown Winnipeg.” Homebuyers will discover a diverse range of home sites in a scenic setting of prairie wetlands, native grasses and walking trails, which connect to the Harte Trail.

“This is a beautiful plan with an appealing price point at approximately $252,500, plus your lot,” says Mosher, explaining that this is a starting point, so homebuyers can then add the upgrades they want. Called the Avalon, this showhome is one of 18 new Broadview plans that are all designed to fit the different lot sizes available, with a variety of looks, including some with recessed garages. “Before the impact fee and lot, these homes range from about $247,000 up to $281,000. Buyers can have a stunning new home in this unique neighbourhood for around $400,000.”

t the western tip of Winnipeg, RidgeWood West opens up to amazing prairie skies.

With two wetlands at its centre, homebuilders in RidgeWood West are providing buyers with a diverse range of custom and premium home styles that fit within the natural setting. “In addition to the lake lots and those backing onto the Harte Trail, there are many other signature sites to choose from, and homes are being designed to have big impact in these locations,” explains Reid. Debra Mosher of Broadview Homes credits Qualico Communities for providing outstanding architectural guidelines and an ideal canvas for builders to create homes that are eye-catching and that reflect the homeowners’ ideal lifestyle. “Higher visibility homes have enhanced exterior finishes and trim, lending to the community’s look and appeal,” she explains. “Front elevations must incorporate at least two materials, adding to the variety of home styles in the area.” Idyllic cul-de-sacs and interesting coves throughout the development provide something unique for both the builders and buyers. “These give homeowners the ability to have the style and size of home they want while enjoying quieter, more

The Kestrel Way home, which is the first of the new designs to be finished, features a distinct, open kitchen layout with views through to the great room and back into the dining room. “You can see the television while preparing dinner,” says Mosher, noting this is a popular feature with many homeowners. Laundry is easily accessible on the second floor and there’s the option of a fourth bedroom or loft. The outdoor finishing for the home includes weathered wood look vinyl siding, stucco, and smart start trim.

Creemans Crescent, within Phase 2, has a variety of custom lots, some of which offer walkout lower levels onto the wetlands or the trail system. This portion of the Phase 2 servicing also adds 58 premium lots on Yellow Rail Crescent. “Phase 2 will help ensure we can continue to meet the high demand here, making a variety of lot choices available,” Reid says. “We expect to see the home designs continue to evolve to offer buyers in RidgeWood West a unique opportunity to enjoy a relaxed lifestyle, set within nature, in the heart of this established community.”

Mosher says, “This showhome was actually designed for a narrower lot yet includes all the goodies people are looking for.” According to Reid, the response to RidgeWood West has been overwhelming. Phase 2 servicing began in the spring and with the new selection of lots also comes the second wetland, which provides a vast array of options for buyers.

HOMES & Neighbourhoods

Form meets function Foxridge Homes is bringing new design to this year’s Parade of Homes with their property at 364 Willow Creek Road in Bridgwater Trails. The home is a 3,322 square-foot twostorey beauty that features a wealth of custom touches. “The exterior is a ‘contemporary farmhouse’ that uses Hardie board siding and exposed curved wood timbers all done in a sophisticated mix of greys and natural shades,” says Colleen Chaput, Marketing Manager with Foxridge Homes, a unit of Qualico. She reports that the interior of the new design offers much to families. Inside, expect to find Mirage hardwood flooring and Calacatta Gold quartz counters in kitchen, powder room and at the built in desk/wine station. The property is situated on the lake with walkouts to the shoreline. “This is certainly one of the most impressive residences ever built by Qualico in Manitoba,” she says, pointing to the huge wraparound covered deck, the opportunity for four large bedrooms and the massive ensuite and master walk-in closet.

According to Colleen, this is a functional family home that is inspired with amazing details from the high design kitchen to the upper level loft to the counters in the walk-in closet to the easy deck access off the dining room.

Custom Quality Some custom homebuilders claim to be handson, but how many can say they learned to wallpaper just to create the perfect abstract piece in the dining room, or sewn kitchen cushions to ensure they’re exactly suited for the space? Creating a vision down to those last details is what makes Hearth Homes a standout custom builder. For the company’s new showhome – 23 Munnion Road in RidgeWood West – in particular, the concept is a modern contemporary design that almost borders on minimalist. Liam Milne of Hearth Homes points to the main level powder room as an example since it features a stark white hanging sink with a swirling faux-marble feature wall. While the aesthetic seems unconventional for the development’s demographics, the functional aspects are anything but. Realizing the area caters to families, Hearth included a built-in kitchen dinette complete with benches, a tulipbased table, and custom stained chairs that will match the rest of the woodwork throughout the house. The company often focuses on bungalows – a popular format for most developments – so Hearth looked forward to creating a new two-

storey floor plan for the 2,175-square-foot home. A key design feature of the second level is a loft area with vaulted ceilings that offers families an additional space to use as a playroom or additional rec room.

Families will also enjoy being on the edge of Charleswood, which is known for its natural beauty. Prospective buyers will also love how this home butts up against a grove of mature trees, leaving one side neighbour free. AUTUMN 2018 | STYLE MANITOBA | 57

what’s already been done in the community. “That’s one of the great things about Qualico Communities,” she says. “They don’t want every home on a street to look the same. So, we’re building unique homes that share common elements from the architectural guidelines but are also always raising the bar.”

“In the homes being built here today, we’re seeing natural elements such as stone and wood grain looks, wood siding and warmer earth tone stucco colours,” says Tara Reid of Qualico Communities. “Homeowners are also completing their landscaping with outdoor entertaining spaces to maximize views of the trails, wetlands and grasses throughout the community.”

The 2,400 square foot, two-storey Foxridge home incorporates an oversized double attached garage and a mix of contemporary features.

The Foxridge Homes showhome at 60 West Plains Drive unites many of these features. “The trails and grasses really naturalize everything, and this lends itself to many of the prairie style design features in this showhome,” says Barry Hedgecock of Foxridge Homes. Jennifer Vermette, also of Foxridge Homes and a Sage Creek resident, is impressed by how nature is integrated into the community’s design. “Because of the wide-open walking paths and lakes, backyards don’t have tall fences, so you can see all around you and feel like part of the neighbourhood,” she says. According to Vermette, the West Plains home was designed to innovate, rather than follow

“We’ve moved away from curves in design, using more hard lines in a very contemporary styling. This includes a single pitch roof, and a blend of different exterior materials – from a timber post at the front with heavy stone detail, to a combination finish of siding and stucco,” says Hedgecock. Inside, lighter colours, wood, and other natural materials strike a welcoming tone. The trendsetting gas fireplace and entertainment wall uniquely combine steel, wood and stone for a dramatic effect. Vermette feels the kitchen is the highlight of this home. “It opens up onto the two-storey great room and large dining area with jaw dropping teak cabinetry, a 36-inch gas range stove, beautiful glass range hood and other top of the line appliances, and quartz countertops.”

ing spaces and other appointments throughout the home.” Sage Creek’s new Deveraux apartment complex is set to open in 2019 and will also bring new design and living choices to the area. Denis Jones is overseeing its construction and describes the multi-building complex as an upmarket novel rental product with many amenities, including a pool, clubhouse, fitness centre, and a ride-share program for automobiles and bicycles. The complex will offer 1 and 2-bedroom apartments, starting at approximately $1,000/month, each with contemporary details such as plank flooring, quartz counter tops, stainless steel sinks and appliances, in-suite laundry, and central air conditioning and heating. Jones says the apartments will also offer micro units - small one-bedroom apartments aimed at young singles or university students. “We’re very excited to be entering our first Qualico community,” says Jones. “We’ve been amazed at the level of professionalism and the degree of caring they put into their communities and are so pleased to now be a part of it.”

The master bedroom and ensuite include a deluxe two-person glass and tile shower, double sinks and interior transom windows that bring in plenty of light. Multipurpose functionality is a focus throughout the house. “There’s a study that can easily function as a den, office, TV or music room, and a work station off the kitchen that can be used by kids to do their homework or as a serving counter,” says Vermette. “You’re getting high functionAUTUMN 2018 | STYLE MANITOBA | 59

Albers Builders has gained a reputation for awe-inspiring designs and quality finishes, which is evident in their latest showhome in Sage Creek. The 1,848 square foot bungalow located at 14 Wildflower Way showcases all of the trademark elements homebuyers have come to know and love from the custom homebuilder.

The kitchen is a generous, open space that begs to entertain, featuring stylish pendant lighting over a nine-foot island, which is accented with walnut and puck lighting and lacquered wooden shelving. In fact, the lacquered wood shelving is found throughout the entire house (you

won’t find a single wire rack anywhere in this abode), as is LED lighting and high-end thermal cabinetry. The bathrooms are a dream come true. The ensuite boasts a luxurious soaker tub, a beautiful custom shower with handheld and rain shower fixtures, and double sinks in the sprawling vanity. The main bathroom features a large one-piece tub that offers the perfect retreat. The exterior is just as impressive, with a doubleattached garage that is drywalled and insulated, a two-tier deck, and acrylic exterior stucco with stone accent. “It certainly delivers on quality and excellence. The quality and the warm feeling make this Albers home different than the rest,” says Camara. “Each Albers Home is unique. Seeing is believing.”

“Customers’ reactions have been ‘Now this is a WOW house!’ And you immediately see the quality and the feeling of warmth,” says realtor Jinny Camara. The home features three bedrooms, two bathrooms, a living room, a spacious kitchen, a dining room and a dinette. There are engineered hardwood floors, and screwed and glued plywood under all flooring, as well as nine-foot ceilings throughout the home. The builder has been generous with gorgeous tiling – guests will find tiling in the ensuite and main bathrooms, as well as the mudroom and front entranceway. The beautiful master ensuite

hat’s the point of being a custom builder if you can’t truly build custom? Hearth Homes is continually pushing the status quo of design, floor plans, and materials to achieve visions often unseen in the local market. This is certainly true of the company’s newest showpiece at 40 West Plains Drive in Sage Creek. This two-bedroom bungalow is geared towards a customer that’s looking to entertain and live a little bit more of a fabulous life; one reminiscent of carefree days in Miami or Hawaii. Inspired by the mid-century tropical style, the home focuses on palm prints, breezy materials, light woods, high-gloss white features, vaulted 18-foot ceilings, clerestory windows, and then, even more windows.

sleek fixtures, and large mirrors to bounce light throughout the room. The floor plan of the home is new for the company, and focuses on placing the high traffic areas, such as the kitchen, great room, and dining area, along the entire back width of the house, which provides the best views of the lot. While the new showhome is having a cabana party on the West side, its slightly more reserved brother is available at 14 East Plains Drive. Designed with a mid-century modern Scandinavian style, the tones are slightly more muted but the floor plan and design are equally as innovative. The home’s showpiece is a massive kitchen – big enough for two to three people to comfortably move around and cook in - featuring both

natural wood and clay-coloured maple cabinets, a wall pantry with pullout drawers, and an eightfoot island featuring drawers for pots and pans for highly functional storage. Hearth has even mastered the perfect level for the microwave, boasts Milne, which is flush in the cabinetry and slightly higher than counter level. Equally as impressive is the master ensuite that pulls inspiration from a Nordic spa setting. Oversized, light cultured quartz panels on the walls and counters keep the space clean and sleek, while the custom glass shower features a tub skirt and wall of wood-looking tiles making it appear almost sauna like. Being able to play with design and pull out different inspiration is what makes Hearth Homes a true custom builder.

“You’re going to feel like you’re on vacation here,” quips Liam Milne of Hearth Homes. He points to the ensuite bathroom, which emulates a luxury resort more than a prairiebased home. Featuring a zero-threshold shower with a six-foot wall of glass, which sits atop the tub ledge, the space also includes dual sinks,

T

he 55+ residential market is getting an upgrade. Coming in late 2018 will be 130 Sage Creek Blvd, a new 102unit 55+ rental apartment built by Burnett Management, a company that already has two successful 55+ residences affiliated with Homestead Manitoba. 130 Sage Creek Blvd will feature many of the attributes of the other two 55+ properties. Available will be one-bedroom and two twobedroom suite layouts in a five-storey building. Suites will range in size from 775 square feet to over 1100 square feet. Inside, residents will discover a wealth of attributes. For example, apartments feature in-suite laundry and ample sized balconies. Each unit comes with the latest in stainless steel appliances for a fresh modern décor. As well, suites come with an extra storage locker to help keep apartments clutter-free. The building itself is concrete construction, an aspect that adds to in-suite privacy. There is also an exercise room and guest suite, as well as a main floor common area with a large kitchen. Here, Rya Janzen, Marketing Director with Homestead Manitoba, comments that the common area will be just one of the ways they work to establish community within the building. She notes that the common area can accommodate up to 50 persons and allows residents to still have large family and social group functions while maintaining a smaller footprint residence.

“When it comes time to scale back and downsize from the big family home, people can still entertain and gather. Having the common area means that Christmas dinners, potlucks and Bridge group wind-ups don’t have to be a thing of the past. At our Sage Creek facility, you can bring your lifestyle, and we can help with the details.” Sage Creek itself is a master planned community developed by Qualico, one of Manitoba’s leaders in new home neighbourhoods. The community is targeted to a wide range of demographics and family incomes, and now boasts a 55+ residence to add to its many living options. “Sage Creek is a mature development with all the amenities one would expect. There are parks and playgrounds, bike and walking trails, gorgeous wetlands to explore, and shops such as Sobeys, Shoppers Drug Mart, Tim Horton’s and McDonalds, not to mention a dentist and an eye clinic, all in easy walking distance,” says Rya.

features underground parking, which is also included in the rent. Burnett Management operates two other 55+ facilities in Winnipeg (Kildonan Green Apts. and Prairie Landing) as well as being a part of the Homestead Manitoba family of Assisted Living facilities and two apartment complexes. This makes for one of Manitoba’s most experienced facilitators for those moving into their senior years. “Folks can move into one of our 55+ apartment buildings, and then as personal circumstances change as residents age, they can consider a move to one of our assisted living buildings. We have found that people appreciate the ability to stay within a community and continue to deal with people they already know as they age and find they require more support.” Visit www.sagecreekapartments.ca to find out more about 130 Sage Creek Blvd.

Already half of the apartment leases are signed. “There has been tremendous excitement about these new suites and Winnipeggers have really come forward,” she says, remarking that construction is nearly complete. Rya reports that residents commit to a one-year lease, with a simple month’s notice to cancel. Rent is affordable with one-bedroom units going for $1575/month and two-bedroom units between $1725 and $1975. This includes everything except TV and phone/internet. The facility

Flexible advantage Since 2003, Homestead Manitoba has been a leading provider of assisted living options for seniors. Today, the company offers six assisted living facilities: Dakota House, Sterling House, Kildonan House, Devonshire House (I and II) and Homestead South in Morden. In addition, they are closely linked with three 55+ rental facilities: 130 Sage Creek Drive, Prairie Landing and Kildonan Green Apts. According to Homestead Manitoba Marketing Director Rya Janzen, the idea is to offer help to residents where needed. For example, Homestead’s assisted living residences offer chef prepared dining, where kitchens take individual dietary needs into account. They also offer housekeeping service and activities that include everything from shopping trips to Christmas light tours. There are exercise programs, on-site banking, a hair salon, and guest suites for out of town visitors. All for a starting price of $2200 per month. “Our philosophy is one of inclusion and community,” says Janzen, mentioning the flexibility of all the properties. As a good case in point, residents can share amenities such as guest

Their search eventually brought them to Taylor Farm, where they discovered a large pieshaped lot and the perfect custom home design to fulfill their dream of upstream living in the family-friendly community of Headingley. The Hearth Homes Winchester design the Olivers selected is a 3,300 square foot twostorey home with a lower level walkout in the back, providing ideal sightlines to the naturalized wetlands. “We really wanted to look out onto water. In addition to our walkout basement, the entire back of our home features large windows, so the view is fantastic,” says Andy. A 22 x 12-foot elevated deck extends the communal family living space, a popular design trend amongst homes in this community taking advantage of views of the Assiniboine River, wetlands and streams, native grasses, trail system, and at its heart – a magnificent basswood grove. Liam Milne, Hearth Homes, describes the Oliver’s home as craftsman style. “It’s much more traditional and chalet-like,” he says. “The exterior features rough-sawn fir while the inside includes wood floors and rustic finishes.”

A double-sided fireplace with a beautiful custom mantel is another unique feature that faces the great room on one side and the outside deck on the other. The second floor overlooks the main floor, with a catwalk and wood railing. Twenty-eight-foot high ceilings in the foyer complement the openness that flows throughout the home. A horseshoe shaped kitchen is a focal point featuring oversized luxury appliances, a very large island and open access to the living room and other areas of the house. The home also has a triple car tandem garage, a feature that is made possible because of the larger lot – this is a key design element shaping the many new homes being built in this area. Jason Arlt, Arlt Homes, another custom builder, says, “A wider lot means that you can have a wider home. So, in a house in Taylor Farm you might be able to have your bedrooms in two separate wings. This can offer a family many benefits as their children grow.” In Taylor Farm, builders also have the space to incorporate new technologies across the entire expanse of the home. Adam Wickstrom, Hearth Homes, explains, “Larger bungalows provide more roof access for solar panels.” Other stateof-the-art design technologies include distributed audio, which has the added advantage of removing cables from general view, plus smart thermostats and other energy efficient features. Tara Reid of Qualico Communities says that builders here are striving to create a balance of innovative home designs that also complement the natural surroundings. “Builders and homebuyers are attracted to spacious bungalows with ample windows for natural light. We’re seeing natural materials such as real wood siding and stone. The homeowners are also choosing lighter colour palettes, which further enhances the feeling of spaciousness.”

Reid was excited to announce the recent release of 11 river lots on Curry Drive, providing even more space for new homebuyers – with increased depths of up to 300 feet. “This will be the community’s first introduction of expansive lots backing the Assiniboine River, so we expect to see some exciting new home designs that take advantage of these unparalleled sightlines.” How builders interpret Qualico Communities’ architectural guidelines is what brings the home designs to a new level. Reid says, “What’s really clear is that home designs in Taylor Farm are quite distinctive from those in other neighbourhoods, simply because they don’t have many of the same constraints faced within urban neighbourhoods.” This, she says, helps put the focus on the abundant green space, wetlands, pathways, and river views that everyone can enjoy. “There is a feeling of restfulness in Taylor Farm. The lots are spacious and blend beautifully with the tranquil natural landscape.”

The Extra Mile Pushing past the point where others stop, adding that little bit more detail - it’s what makes for a leader. Artista Homes has always been a company to go that extra mile when it comes to designing and building high-quality homes, and this 5,000-square-foot Bridgwater Lakes house is a prime example of that. “This was an exciting home to build - it was a culmination of years of experience and many design influences coming together,” explains Frank Cotroneo, co-owner of Artista Homes. “Artista Homes is typically setting the trends in the city, and this home is no exception.” He points to its numerous unique elements, such as full stone walls on all three levels, coloured inside windows, the vertical two-sided natural gas fireplace, 20-foot ceilings in the great room and a king-sized theatre room with fir beams. The home also boasts some of the company’s signature elements, including glass partition walls, a large chef-style kitchen, a spa-like ensuite, and a four-season sunroom, which in this case features stunning lake views.

Artista not only focuses on the inside, but also ensures the exterior is just as beautiful. Cotroneo states that this four-bedroom home features a fountain in the front, while the back boasts a custom pizza oven.

“We pride ourselves in going the extra mile to make sure that quality and function are present throughout the entire home,” he notes.

Another Taylor Farm house not to be missed is the company’s spec home at 5 Southdown Lane. The bungalow with a three-car garage is a quintessential set-up for the development, which is only 10 minutes from the city, but Hearth makes the space its own through contemporary details.

The monolithic double-sided fireplace is wrapped in flat concrete that looks like stacked stone and is the anchoring piece of the main floor, while the finished basement comes with a state-of-the-art theatre room, complete with chairs.

The company’s fine details are on display at multiple display homes across the city in this season’s Parade of Homes.

House of New Times Liam Milne of Hearth Homes is so over beige and grey. Luckily, as custom homebuilders, his company has the opportunity to move away from the bland box home design many have been trapped in for so long, and bring something fresh to this season’s Parade of Homes. The company’s new showhome in Taylor Farm - 23 Fetterly Way - is an art deco, maximalist inspired home that plays with deep colours, textures, and plenty of detail work. This is apparent from the start with an exterior combination of deep garnet and smoky silver acrylic stucco, navy siding, and black stone - a statement which makes the home stand out in this country setting. The fireplace is also the perfect realization of this design. Stained wood crowned in a vectorized sunburst pattern surrounds tile of graduated blues that radiate out to the edges. “This small amount of tile inspired the entire home,” states Milne. “I cannot properly describe how beautiful it is.”

Pageantry Homes’ tagline is ‘Better Living Starts Here.’ Indicative of this thinking is their showhome at 417 Scotswood Drive South in Scotswood Meadows (Charleswood). 417 Scotswood Drive South is a 2,392 square foot, two-storey, three-bedroom property that features an abundance of light, design forward décor and a host of custom touches. For families looking to make that move to a higher residential standard, this could well be a dream home. Inside, homebuyers can expect to find 2.5 baths, nine-foot ceilings and an open airy layout that is ideal for entertaining. The large great room features built-in cabinetry complete with floating shelving and an electric Marquis fireplace with floor to ceiling ceramic tile wall treatment. The kitchen is a dream for home chefs, with its ample Quartz counters, stainless steel appliances, and appealing finishing touches, such as the ceramic tile backsplash and wood floating shelves. Upstairs, the design features three large bedrooms, the master with a luxury five-piece ensuite bath. all their wants and needs. Working with clients, Pine Creek takes pieces of plans that a customer likes and marries them together in order to maximize the best of the surroundings and future lifestyle, which is the true definition of custom home design.

With that in mind, Pine Creek Homes has never built the same house twice because no two customers or lots are the same. Customizing floor plans is one of the company’s strengths, as is working closely with clients to find the layout that’s the best fit for their lot and lifestyle.

See the Forest and the Trees Sightlines and foresight – these are two things that people need to consider when building their home, suggests Lori Veenstra of Pine Creek Homes. Often people pick a floor plan without giving full consideration to their surroundings and potential future use. With Pine Creek, the lot often plays a large role in the design. The pictured home is a perfect example of creating a design to fit the lot. The owners of the home wanted to maximize the views of their heavily treed property, so Pine Creek created a true floor-to-ceiling space that gives the feeling of being outside while still being in. Veenstra suggests other outdoor elements to consider such as sun direction or future exterior pieces such as a patio or a pool, to ensure you’re planning the best view before blueprints. “We’d hate to see a 100-year-old tree cut down because the lot wasn’t taken into consideration at the time of the design,” she says. She adds that people often try to search for the perfect floor plan online but fail to realize they will not likely find one there that satisfies

treetSide Developments has announced a brand new presentation centre and display suite now open for viewing at the highly anticipated Rise Condominiums in Bridgwater Centre. The Rise Condominiums – a collection of modern concrete apartment-style condominiums – is in the final stages of Phase I of the development, with first possessions set for November 2018. Soaring seven storeys high in the desirable Waverley West neighbourhood, The Rise is built just steps away from the great amenities of Bridgwater Centre. Located at 300 Centre St., the first phase features 109 one and two-bedroom units, featuring eye-catching architecture, elegant interiors and prairie views, with lively retail shops and essential services within walking distance.

Unbeatable resident amenities are set to include a lounge, fully equipped fitness studio, and an outdoor courtyard with pool, elevating the condominium lifestyle in the popular southwest neighbourhood. Those who call The Rise home will also enjoy perks like private balconies or terraces, and heated underground parking. As the finishing touches are done on Phase 1 at The Rise Condominiums this fall, soon-to-be residents can look forward to a slew of new retail stores, services and excitement surrounding the area. The City of Winnipeg has also recently announced the upcoming construction of two new schools in the neighbourhood, as well as a recreation campus. “We are so excited to be a part of the growing Bridgwater neighbourhood,” says Margaux Braund, marketing coordinator for

StreetSide Developments. “This area is becoming a place for everyone, whether you are a single professional, a growing family with small children, or anyone in between.” Besides its thoughtful location and all the impressive resident amenities, The Rise’s interiors will be outfitted with designer finishes to impress at every step. Ranging from 604 to 1,198 square feet, every square foot at The Rise has been carefully considered. The kitchen interiors are both chic and modern with cabinets using a transitional maple shaker style, painted with a matte black finish. The bold colour chosen by StreetSide’s interior design consultant, Tammie Bennett, is very complementary to the lighting package selected from BA

Robinson Lighting. Along with the shaker-style doors, The Rise includes eye-catching white quartz in both the kitchen and on the vanities in both bath areas. “We took a textured subway-style tile and had it installed in a herringbone pattern. I think it looks very chic, classy and clean,” notes Bennett. Offering one-bedroom, one-bedroom with flex room (which could function as a second bedroom or office) and two-bedroom units, there’s room for luxury at various price points at The Rise. Pricing starts at $223,900. Sales are now underway at The Rise, with their new presentation centre now open at 300 Centre Street in Bridgwater. Browse therisecondos.ca for more information.

he welcome mat has been rolled out at 390 on the River, Winnipeg’s newest luxury condominium in the heart of the city. Display suites are now open, providing the first finished look at this sleek new tower on the scenic southern edge of downtown. Of the many condominiums built in Winnipeg over the past few years, this one stands above them all. Literally. The handsome tower rises 24-stories above the Assiniboine, providing panoramic views of the city and its two major rivers. “That’s the great benefit of living in a tower – you can’t beat the views,” said Geoff Davis, who markets the condominium with his father Claude. “With the Assiniboine, the Legislative Building and the downtown skyline nearby, it’s a pretty spectacular place to be.” The building is also a stand-out on the inside, where a sophisticated, upscale feeling runs

throughout the suites and shared spaces. The kitchens feature under-mount sinks and brand names like Jenn-Air and Fisher Paykel. “The finishes are definitely a step up from what you would normally see in the downtown market,” says Frank Cianflone, another Royal LePage Realtor marketing the units. “If someone is moving to this condo after downsizing from a family home, they’ll appreciate these touches.” The jewels in the crown are the four penthouse suites on the 23rd and 24th floors. Each measures about 2,200 square feet. On the top floor, the two penthouses can be purchased together and combined into one 4,400-square-foot unit. “Each penthouse space is a blank canvas, awaiting customization by its future owner,” says Claude Davis. “There are many opportunities to define the layout, including options for where kitchens and bathrooms can be located.”

The entertainment facilities are located on the sixth floor, overlooking the river. A stylish dining area with fully-equipped kitchen and fireside lounge opens onto a 2,364-square-foot outdoor terrace, where shade trees and greenery have just been planted. Also on site are a guest suite and a 588-squarefoot fitness studio. All amenities are above ground so natural light is plentiful everywhere. Even the heated parkade has a river view. 390 on the River is pet-friendly and perfect for those who enjoy a vibrant, active lifestyle. The Assiniboine River Walk is connected to the property by way of a private path, and Winnipeg’s first separated bikeway runs right past the front door. Just minutes away are the Forks, Osborne Village, Bell MTS Place and an endless array of entertainment opportunities. The first owners will move into 390 on the River later this September, when a number of units will be ready for occupancy. For a private tour of the display suites and amenities, contact the marketing team at 204-510-5717.

Never Settle BY CARLY PETERS

F

or over 30 years Dufresne has been helping customers find the perfect furniture for their home. And when they can’t find exactly what they want on the floor, Dufresne can help them create it.

“The number one benefit of custom upholstery is that you don’t have to settle. Sometimes we can’t help but buy something because of its price tag or same day delivery. However, if you can be a little flexible in these areas you can get that unique blue fabric sofa that matches an heirloom rug, or find a sectional configuration that fits and functions in your room perfectly,” says Jessica Smithson, category manager, upholstery for the Dufresne Group. “Understanding how a piece of furniture will fit spatially is important so your experience should start with our room planning tool, but what’s key to creating a piece you’ll truly love is understanding comfort and use.” Walk through the pieces in the showroom to see how you would use the seating solution day to day. Smithson says don’t only go for style, but also consider how your back feels on the cushions, the arm and seat heights; how your neck is supported when you lay across the seat to watch TV. And you don’t have to equate comfort with frumpy frames and fabric. With custom furniture, even clean, ultra-modern styled seating can be cozy.

Once you can envision yourself relaxing on the structure, next it’s time to give your piece visual appeal. A wide variety of leather and fabric options in multiple colours give you total control over the feel of the furniture. One of the last pieces of the design process is also one of the most important for creating the look you want. Finishing details, such as leg finishes, can change the style of the furniture entirely. “So be careful not to pass by a particular style on the showroom floor because of how it looks until you learn what you can change on it. A brown sofa style with a wood leg may also be available in a sleek grey or stark white with an angular metal leg with a sparkling chrome finish,” advises Smithson. Her final piece of advice for the custom process? Take time with your decisions. “Have patience with the custom experience and enjoy the anticipation of looking forward to that final product arriving in your home. The sense of pride and accomplishment is guaranteed.”

DESIGN&DECOR Curated Not Decorated

While it’s awesome to pull all the inspiration you want from others on Instagram, home décor is really about creating a personalized space; something that reflects your style and adds intrinsic worth to your house. Alison Demaré, Brand Manager for Robinson Lighting says this movement towards personalized spaces is not simply decorating out of the box, but adding in value pieces that create a custommade interior. Artifacts from trips or unique artwork that reflects one’s personalized style are the perfect places to start. “Lighting is one of the best ways to incorporate unique pieces that may reflect your personality or make a bold statement,” states Demaré. “Perhaps the piece selected is a chandelier that is made from wine bottles to complement a wine room that has unique art from your last trip to France. This style of decorating allows the space to become more individualistic; the interiors become far more dynamic and rules and boundaries are less clear. I personally feel it creates far more interesting interiors,” she explains. Artcraft Lighting’s “Edison” collection (shown here) is sure to grab attention in any room. The cluster of glassware, retro in style, is playful in design but will complement any eclectic interior. Available in multiple sizes, the fixture is matte black and vintage brass - the hot new finish this year.

Choose decor items that bring a sense of harmony to your space while expressing your individuality. Curated items say something about who you are, what you love, what you’ve seen, and where you’ve been. Express yourself...

DESIGN&DECOR Warmth and Working Together

Everything is made better through collaboration, when everyone brings ideas and expertise to the table. The kitchen featured here was the result of client input and desires, coupled with Kitchen Craft’s expertise and guidance. The overall design of this Maric Home incorporates clean lines and modern elements with rustic touches such as wood beams and darker flooring. The kitchen follows suit by incorporating darker wood and light painted cabinetry. The uppers, tall cabinets, and panel doors on the fridge feature Kitchen Craft’s style and species called Pearson Maple in the colour Moonlight, while the 10-foot island boasts a Weathered Slate hue. “You will still see lighter colours for cabinetry this fall rather than the darker wood tones of years past, which provides the opportunity to incorporate warmer elements through fixtures and accent pieces,” explains Toni Ostroman, design consultant for Kitchen Craft . The contrast is further broken up by the island’s lower cabinets with glass inserts and a glass wine storage system. Ten appliances are seamlessly integrated, including a steam oven, speed oven, convection wall oven, warming drawer, dishwasher, and coffee system. By installing these systems flush in the cabinetry and behind doors, the clean lines are maintained without compromising function. Additional functional elements include soft-close drawers and slide-out trays instead of doors and adjustable shelving.

Fresh for Fall

As you’re almost ready to close up the cabin or summer home for the season, maybe it’s time to take a look at those floors. How did they weather over the summer? If the answer is, not great, the solution is luxury vinyl planks Luxury vinyl planks have been today’s hard surface of choice for many cottage and homeowners, thanks to its low maintenance capability while being highly durable and aesthetically pleasing. Shaw Flooring’s LVP collection, Floorte, is created using high-definition printing, which provides a look that’s highly authentic, whether it’s the top species and colours of hardwood, a variety of fossilized wood, stone, or concrete visuals. The line’s waterproof qualities make it ideal for high-moisture areas like basements, bathrooms, and mudrooms, as well as being strong, durable and flexible, with the ability to conceal imperfections of the floor beneath. It can be installed in unheated cottages and is freeze/thaw stable, so you won’t see cracks or shifting when you open back up in the summer. The hard floor underneath is softened by LVP’s attached cork backing, which allows cushioned comfort underfoot compared to hardwood. Ken’s Carpets & Urban Homestyle Centre is the largest Floorte retailer in sales in the prairies. Inspiration for a Unique Front Door In a home, the front door is one of the defining architectural features. It can provide a feeling of comfort, warmth, and security. At the same time, it can be bold, distinct, and playful. The beauty is that you can take the design in many directions. Henry Ford’s “you can have any colour, so long as it’s black” has evolved markedly towards customization for individual homes. BOLD AND COLOURFUL One of the best ways to bring out your front entrance is with a bright pop of colour. Consider crimson red, sunny yellow, and bright orange for a bold statement, or alternatively, woodgrain to bring warmth and timelessness to your home. LOOK UP Build height into your front entry. There’s an impressive feel to a 10 or 12-foot entrance, or even 14! Height can be achieved with either very tall door panels or transoms, allowing natural light in. SIMPLICITY RULES In the past, doors were intricately decorated with stained glass, beveled glass, and wrought iron. Today, styles are very streamlined, with

minimal detailing or embossing on the panel, and lots of glass. Keep it simple for maximum effect. PRIVACY How much privacy would you like? Think about how much glass you have in the design, and what visitors can see when they walk up to the door. Consider obscured glass or a peep hole.

STATEMENT-MAKING HARDWARE Finish off the door with the perfect handle. Nowadays homeowners gravitate towards Satin Nickel or an Oil Rubbed Bronze. Modern doors have very narrow plates and very sleek handles, or possibly a commercial-looking pull bar.
