the agenda Welcome to the Autumn 2019 edition of Style Manitoba! As the last traces of summer slowly waft away and the leaves start turning colour, it’s time to prepare for the cooler weather to come. From cleaning the gutters to raking the leaves to putting the garden to bed for the season, it’s all bound to keep homeowners busy. Thankfully, there’s plenty coming up on the entertainment front this month as well, including new seasons for most of the arts and cultural groups (check out Style’s Stepping Out section for details), and of course, the perennially popular Parade of Homes put on by the Manitoba Home Builders’ Association. Running from September 7 – 29, the Fall 2019 Parade features 139 new homes and

condos in a wide range of locations within Winnipeg and beyond. These fabulous showhomes and communities truly represent thoughtful development with an eye to the environment, and the very best in construction materials and techniques, along with the latest design trends on the market today. Indeed, Manitoba builders, suppliers and developers have rolled out their finest yet one more time - mark your calendars – the Parade is a must-attend event! Style’s readers can enjoy a sneak preview of what’s on display at this season’s version of the Parade by perusing our cover story Classic Comfort with a Modern Twist, and by checking out the Homes & Neighbourhoods section. And for those seeking a cottage getaway, Home Away from

Home is a must-read editorial – the cabin featured in this piece really took my breath away! On a sombre note, while putting this issue together, we lost a dear friend and client to cancer – Sandra Janzen. Anyone who knew her will readily acknowledge what an incredibly kind, extraordinarily generous and remarkable human being Sandra truly was. She will be deeply missed by her husband Dale, daughters Kristen and Monica, their families, and numerous friends. Rest in peace dear Sandra….

he stunning feature wall that greets you as you enter this beautiful bungalow hints at the level of detail that awaits. Built by Avanti Custom Homes in the pretty “rur-ban” development of Oak Bluff West, this showhome at 71 Casselman Crescent showcases the custom touches Avanti is known for. Some details—like the Deco-inspired feature wall in the entranceway—are obvious, while others are revealed in surprising and practical ways. After all, “custom is the new standard” for the Avanti team. And they mean it. Elements that tend to be costly add-ons in other builds are included in every Avanti custom home. A tour of this 1,739-square-foot stunner, part of the Fall 2019 Parade of Homes, is the best way to appreciate the characteristic design, craftsmanship and quality that defines an Avanti.

Huge triple-pane windows by JELD-WEN flank the great room to ensure abundant natural light. A 10’ tray ceiling defines and lifts the space, while a tiled feature wall with linear gas fireplace insert provides the “wow” factor.

The tour begins…with the highlights The entrance feature wall marks an indoor jumping-off point for the home’s invitingly fresh, clean and sophisticated aesthetic that includes a neutral colour palette of greys, white and taupe, along with sleek finishes. Yet, the home is imbued with the warm touches that will appeal equally to families, professionals and empty nesters. Curtis Carpets installed the easy-care, wideplank laminate flooring flowing from the entranceway throughout the open concept great room, kitchen and dining areas and hallways. Plush carpeting, also from Curtis Carpets, provides luxurious comfort underfoot on the basement stairs, in the two spacious bedrooms, and the master bedroom.

classic and contemporary, lighting fixtures from Robinson Lighting add artful luminous dimension to every room. Recessed LED potlights in the ceiling subtly punctuate the spaces they illuminate. “Robinson Lighting did an awesome job of the lighting,” says Jason Jaquet, Vice President of Avanti Custom Homes and Randall Homes. “Lighting packages in Avanti custom homes are tailored to each client.”

When the sun goes down and the lights must come on, they radiate style. A blend of

Congratulations to Avanti Custom Homes on its newest showhome.

We share your commitment to uncompromising quality, enduring craftsmanship and design innovation. These qualities define exceptional KOHLERŽ products, as well as an entire home that’s furnished with them.

10 | STYLE MANITOBA | AUTUMN 2019

The well-appointed kitchen features loads of custom cabinetry supplied and installed by Urban Effects. A quartz-topped central island does multiple duties as an eating/entertaining and prep area. The curved Kohler faucet is the perfect accent.

Floor plan leaves more room for living This home’s unique floor plan allowed the Avanti team to incorporate more square footage into well-used spaces. By moving the laundry room out of the traditional mudroom and into its own attractive space, they freed up the mudroom to accommodate a coat closet and provide a more functional transition area between the home and garage. Bonus: the mudroom can be tucked out of sight by sliding a trendy barn door into place. An alcove area in the attached two-car garage is a convenient spot to house and access recycling bins. Avanti makes even the most mundane household chores tolerable. The main floor hallways are 6 feet wide—not something you might think about, but it’s appreciated when you need the extra room to manoeuvre. It’s not just the extra floor space (and abundant windows and lighting) that lends an open, airy quality. A tray ceiling in the great room, for example, draws the eye upwards to create an

illusion of height. Actually, it’s not an illusion: the ceiling soars to 10 feet high, accentuated by a dramatic, floor-to-ceiling white ceramic tile wall surrounding the TV and linear gas fireplace insert. Large windows along the back extend the view out to a spacious covered deck and the yard beyond.

The great room opens into the heart of the home: a beautifully appointed kitchen, replete with stainless steel appliances and loads of custom cabinetry supplied and installed by Urban Effects. provided all the kitchen and bath fixtures to complement the home’s design. Even something as utilitarian as a large walkin kitchen pantry gets the star treatment: it’s equipped with custom wood shelving to neatly store dry goods. A dining area next to the kitchen features a huge window and a modern candelabra-inspired light fixture. There’s plenty of room for four, or even eight, to dine in style. Another tray ceiling in the master bedroom creates a boutique hotel-like grandeur. Add to this a large window graced with blinds and draperies selected and supplied by Changes by Design, and this room is every bit the spa-like retreat it was meant to be. The large walk-in closet with custom shelving and storage galore makes finding clothes, accessories and shoes a breeze. Masterfully appointed, the master bedroom’s ensuite features a tiled, glassed-in rain shower stall, his and her sinks, and a separate water closet that effortlessly combine in this liveable, functional, and stylish space.

Custom details make the difference “We loaded this home up with high-end finishes included standard in our custom builds,” says Jaquet. Three hinges on interior doors and solid aspen casings and baseboards help the home stand the test of time. According to Jaquet, Avanti is the only custom homebuilder that relies on certified professionals to install the doors and windows. Fully automated, the home’s lighting, temperature, audio and security systems can all be controlled from anywhere with a smartphone. A USB charging hub built into the kitchen island is among a myriad of thoughtful touches to accommodate the high (tech) expectations of Avanti clients.

Built for the future

A dining area next to the kitchen features a huge window and modern candelabrastyle light fixture from Robinson Lighting.

And if these elements aren’t impressive enough, rest assured, this home is one solid build. The framed interior walls in the unfinished basement let potential clients visualize the potential of the lower level and see firsthand the quality of the materials used in its construction. “We build with the future in mind, so by doing it right we save our clients time and money in the long run,” says Jaquet.

Surrounded by a neatly landscaped property, the home has a low-maintenance exterior of acrylic stucco, siding and brick, along with pops of architectural interest for attractive curb appeal right from the concrete driveway supplied by Northland Ready-Mix Concrete.

Meet Me at The Common “Drinking good wine with good food in good company is one of life’s most civilized pleasures.” This saying, from acclaimed wine critic Michael Broadbent, rings true for The Common at The Forks. Launched in 2016, this one-of-a-kind public market reimagined the dining out concept and continues to impress and excite patrons. “The place is so unique! Where else in this country can you choose food from a large number of independent restaurants or food kiosks, select a wine or beer from a large, fun offering, and sit wherever you want, eat outside, walk around shops? Nowhere!” says Véronique Rivest, The Common’s internationally renowned sommelier. “The very casual, inclusive and quality-driven concept of The Common is just so unique and fun.” That relaxed, approachable style is just what Rivest strives for on the wine and beer menu at The Common. With 20 craft beers and 20 wine selections available, it’s a fine balance of what Rivest considers “comfort zone wines” and more bold flavours for those seeking something new. “I try to create lists that are both inclusive and adventurous,” says Rivest, the world’s top female sommelier. “I’m not big on trends, they come and go. What I’m more interested in is quality and authenticity. I strive to feature wines and beers that have a story to tell and that are made by passionate people, and that are a reflection of place and time.” To help patrons continuously explore new flavours, regions and styles, the menu changes each quarter. To launch the new offerings, The Common holds a fun event, UnCommon Pours, where attendees imbibe in the new delicious tipples and learn more about them, including where each is from, how they are made and the stories behind the selections.

This season’s UnCommon Pours, hosted by Rivest, takes place October 11 and 12. “It’s not rocket science, it’s just wine. And even though it can be extremely complex, it can also be easily enjoyed by anyone! You don’t need to master a special language or technique to enjoy it,” says Rivest. “Wine and beer are meant to be shared! I think their most wonderful quality is how they bring people together.” Just don’t ask Rivest which wine she likes best. “That’s like asking me which of my kids I prefer!” Tickets to Uncommon Pours are available at theforks.com/wine.

Make Cleaning Your Home a Workout! OK, turn on the music and let’s get fit! Here are the exercises to help you stay in shape while cleaning: 1 WALK QUICKLY all the time you’re cleaning. ON STAIRS, it’s better not to run, and keep your hands free to ensure safety. 2 SQUAT TO PUT THINGS AWAY - When picking up things from the floor, separate the legs and keep them aligned with the hips. Bend the knees as you lower, keeping the back straight and contracting your abdominals. 3 FORWARD BENDS as an alternative to squats. With the knees slightly bent and the legs open and aligned with the hips, move the torso forward with your hands reaching towards the floor until you feel a pleasant lengthening of the spine. This exercise is appropriate only when picking up light objects. Always protect the back. 4 CLEANING MARATHON - Challenge your family members to a housecleaning race. See who can clean their area first work is more fun when everyone is cooperating! 5 WASH PLATES to tone arm muscles; repeat 20 times per arm.

While breathing out, take large steps, bending the leg and simultaneously flexing the rear leg until the knee is just a few centimetres from the ground. Alternate left and right. 7 DANCE around the house while you clean. As well as being fun, this is an excellent method to burn calories! 8 STRETCH WHILE DUSTING - Dust with one hand while keeping the other lifted up, elongating all the muscles and contracting the abdominals. Alternate left and right. 9 IRONING for at least an hour burns around 150 calories. Be sure to stand properly: back straight, legs slightly apart, moving from right to left.

Omar is a secular Muslim who smokes, drinks, and parties through life. When he’s told that his ex-girlfriend has killed herself, he’s unable to explain or deal with his grief. He lashes out, does stupid things, and attracts the notice of the RCMP, who blackmails him into spying in a Toronto mosque. Both provocative and offbeat, Adnan Khan’s debut novel, about the ways young brown men are viewed in modern-day Canada, is ultimately heartbreaking.

LUDOVICO EINAUDI Seven Days Walking – Day One (Decca) Don’t be deterred by the austere packaging; this is bright and handsome music, well worth investigation. Italian pianist Ludovico Einaudi compares favourably to a subtle vanguard of modern composers such as Max Richter, Wim Mertens and the late Jóhann Jóhannson, loosely defined as tempering minimalism with a taste for a good tune. Day One is the first installment in Seven Days Walking, a projected seven discs inspired by long, monthly Alpine walks. Melodies that begin prettily turn pensive, especially when the session’s other two musicians, Redi Hasa (cello) and Federico Mercozzi (violin, viola) play charcoalrich harmonies and startling assertions, circling like insects in “Cold Wind” and gathering tension in “Golden Butterflies.” Indeed, what begins in placid New Age territory grows turbulent as Einaudi shows his mastery of density and drama, aided by beautiful recording. Currently, four subsequent volumes are listed on his website, while Decca has the complete seven-disc box slated for September.

(Light in the Attic) Distance and forbidding exchange rates kept most of Japan’s sparkling pop innovation from western ears for too long. Harry (Haroumi) Hosono may get his due at last, with his early music now available on this continent through U.S. label Light in the Attic. Cut in 1978, Paraiso anticipates the fun soon to come with Yellow Magic Orchestra – YMO partners Ryuichi Sakamoto and Yukihiro Takahashi are guests – but it also shows the multi-instrumental Hosono deftly absorbing pop, funk and reggae – along with tourist-eye misconceptions of Japanese tradition – with wit, care and a great sense of fun. From “Tokyo Rush” onward this is definitely modern music, but the heart beats just as surely in the old Okinawan folk song, “Asatoya Yunta,” where Hosono adds sparkling marimba, and “Shambala Signal,” using tuned gongs to emulate Indonesian gamelan patterns.

BARRE PHILLIPS Mountainscapes (ECM) Vertigo, space and resonance abound in the futuristic music of Mountainscapes. Leader and bassist Barre Phillips had shored The Trio, a wily and mobile group with saxophonist John Surman and drummer Stu Martin. In 1976, they returned, recharged with new electronic colours. The use of synthesizers, played by Surman, Martin and Dieter Feichtner, was rare and enticing in the day, but the humming backdrops, undulating texture and twinkling detail were as integral as Phillips’s majestic bass swoops, Martin’s canny drumming and Surman’s excited baritone and soprano solos. It’s part of the latest reissue series to celebrate ECM’s 50th anniversary, and the remastering does handsome justice to engineer Martin Wieland’s original recording, Phillips’s vision and ECM’s perceptive appetite for sonic innovation. Thoughts Absolutely loved the story and fabulous cover shot of Buffy Sainte-Marie in Style Manitoba’s last issue. We were thrilled to learn that Buffy was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame in April 2019. It’s a well-deserved long time coming award for this talented musician and “beacon of peace, love and understanding.” Aside from the great coverage on Buffy, there’s plenty of good relevant local content in Style Manitoba – please keep it coming. Sandy & Reg Bernier, Winnipeg Great cover shot on Style’s summer 2019 issue! Buffy was clearly right into the music the moment that photo was snapped - I love action shots of musicians! Good story within as well – kudos to Buffy for her induction into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame. And good on you folks for running this story on such a worthy artist. Phoebe Dunbar, Winnipeg

My husband and I enjoyed Custom Fit For Life, an article that ran in your summer issue featuring a home built by Foxridge Homes. There were so many impressive design details in the home, we were almost ready to sell ours and buy it! This one was right up our alley. It’s wonderful to see the talents of our own Manitoba builders profiled in such a sleek publication. Thanks for the good coverage. Eileen Bjornson, Winnipeg I’d like you people to know that my boyfriend and I stopped in at Prairie’s Edge for dinner after reading the review about this restaurant in the summer 2019 issue of Style Manitoba. In fact, the editorial actually made me hungry, so I knew we’d have to try this restaurant out – lol! We were not disappointed! Highly recommended for those who want great food in a super pleasant environment. Thanks for leading us to yet another great place to dine in Winnipeg! We will be visiting Carbone Café Club in the near future as well. Cynthia Tummel, Winnipeg I tried out every recipe featured in the Summer 2019 edition of Style Manitoba, much to my partner’s delight. All were excellent, especially the Shaved Brussel Sprout Salad with Poached Egg and the Korean Skewered Pork. (Dessert lovers must try the Hummingbird Cake – it was to die for!) I’m looking forward to the next issue for more recipe ideas. Serena Blumberg, Winnipeg Wonderful travel coverage on Ecuador in your last issue! My wife and I have been pondering where our next trip will take us, but I think we found an answer to that question in Greg Klassen’s story. Nice publication!

Timeless Treasures BY AILEEN GOOS BERARD

or 40 years, Manitobans looking for a special piece of jewellery have relied on the ability and artistry of Roger Watson Jewellers.

This year, the family-owned business celebrates their ruby anniversary, and owner John Watson, who started designing custom jewellery in 2002, says they continue to challenge themselves to deliver a level of quality and service that stands the test of time.

Celebrating 40 years of design

His parents, Roger and Karen Watson, opened the doors the year John was born, so he has spent his fair share of time growing up around the shop, learning and taking it all in. “They allowed me to develop my own design and manufacturing style, which we continue with today,” says John, who completed training in Thailand and the United States through the Gemological Institute of America. “I’m proud of all we’ve accomplished, but thinking back, some of my best memories were the little things like Mom teaching me how to type on her fancy electric typewriter and sitting in Dad’s office on the big chairs, and now I’m lucky that my children have the opportunity to do the same.” From their Osborne Street location, which features an onsite design studio and custom workshop, the Roger Watson Jewellers team take great pride in creating the perfect custom pieces. They also offer a beautiful selection of pre-designed jewellery for customers to browse. With the shift towards upcycling and greener living, Watson says they’ve been getting more requests for custom-made pieces than ever before. To add even more sentimental value, they focus on using what their clients have and adding only what is required or

One memorable piece that pops to mind for Watson included a grandmother’s diamond. “All of our custom projects have great meaning and often involve family treasures from passed generations,” he says. “The ones that stick with me most involve carefully disassembling a worn-out antique ring, knowing how much it meant to that loved one, appreciating the goldsmithing techniques from decades past, and crafting it into a new piece for a new generation.” He’s had the honour of working on many treasures, but he notes there are few things that have the lasting power of a gold ring.

requested. Having their workshop on site, along with the knowledge and skills to tackle almost any project, gives their clients an open book for design. Watson begins by creating images by hand and progressing to designing jewellery using the latest computer aided technologies. This technology allows the customer to collaborate in the design process through several stages. He has the ability to work hands-on with his clients in order to adjust works in progress to ensure customer satisfaction. From engagement and wedding rings to reinvented precious family heirlooms, Watson has used his artistic ability to design some wonderful pieces that have become priceless mementos to the owners. Naturally, he designed his own engagement and wedding rings to wife, Christine, who also works in the shop.

“I’ve worked alongside people in their last months of life creating special family pieces, signets or monogram rings to be passed down to loved ones not yet conceived,” he says. “Bridging a generational gap and holding something once held by your ancestors is a truly powerful thing.” His delicate and thoughtful craftsmanship over the years has garnered some priceless reactions when customers lay eyes on the finished piece. “Cracking open that box to reveal your new creation can bring a flood of emotion that some don’t even see coming,” says Watson. “I’ve seen some great reactions over the years, from uncontrolled giggles to straight up tears of joy, but it’s always that smile they have while seeing it for the first time that gets me.” “It always sits well knowing our passion will be shared for years to come, and long after we’re gone, our craftsmanship and products will live on.” AUTUMN 2019 | STYLE MANITOBA | 37

Grey Matter Looking for that black to white ombré, hints of grey or silver? Hair too short? Hair that can’t handle this chemical process? This is an extremely difficult trend in hair to achieve and maintain. Not only is this technique costly, it’s very time consuming as well, and can take hours or even days in the salon, sometimes two to three visits to achieve. A way to reduce the cost and maintain this look is to consider the application of human hair extensions. Extensions can be purchased in many colours and lengths and re-coloured for exact match and desired look. This client had blond extensions applied, then tinted black at the tops and swept in grey to the mid shaft, leaving the ends white, achieving the benefits of length and the colour she so desired. Hair extensions are available almost everywhere, are reasonably priced, and come in many different technical applications. Talk to a stylist about your next set, your budget, and the look you’d like to achieve through hair extensions. Fashion Matters!! A Heavenly Experience BY AILEEN GOOS-BERARD PHOTOGRAPHY: MICHAEL ROBERTS

Salon H strives for beautiful hair, beautiful planet At Salon H the H stands for hair, but it could stand for so much more. “We have one client who says the H stands for home because we try to make it such a welcoming experience,” says manager Nicki Zaruk. “It’s all about the experience. Every moment of your visit should be enjoyable and relaxed.” Owner Ashley Sparkes launched the location just under two years ago with the mission to provide great hair and to give her clients a remarkable experience from start to finish. She can check that item off the list – from the moment guests enter the Roblin Boulevard salon, they’re made to feel right at home. Guests are treated to a complimentary Aveda ritual – a relaxing, stress-relieving scalp and shoulder massage, which releases tension and promotes well-being by indulging all the senses using Aveda essential oils. They’re also offered a hot towel treatment during select services, which Zaruk says is a heavenly experience. There’s a comfortable sitting area that showcases artwork by one of their clients that’s available for sale, and the décor features comfy chairs and blankets, which are changed to match the season. There’s also a small patio area in front of the salon where guests can grab some fresh air while waiting for their colour to process. In their lounge, guests can enjoy a selection of organic tea, coffee or water while relaxing during the service. The salon offers a complimentary consultation, which provides a chance for clients to meet their stylist and talk about their hair, the look they want to achieve, as well as pricing.

Equally as important as their commitment to the customer experience, they’re also intent on being as environmentally-conscious as possible – from the retail wall filled with organic Aveda and Loma products, to the organic coffee and tea guests are offered, right down to how they handle waste products.

Before the first visit, guests can learn more about the salon’s offerings and review the team’s abilities by checking out the newly updated website, which is a sleek, clean platform reflective of the salon itself. One of the best features is the stylist page, which offers a brief bio that clearly explains their areas of expertise, as well as links to each of their individual Instagram accounts that highlights their work. “I can’t say enough great things about our team,” says Zaruk. “They’re all very talented stylists who can do anything, but they also specialize in different areas, so you’re assured of a great result regardless of who you book an appointment with.”

The salon is Green Circle Certified, which means they’re not only helping to make clients beautiful, they’re doing their part to keep the planet beautiful as well. To reduce their carbon footprint, they work with a company that collects all of the aerosol cans, hair, colour tubes, used foils, wasted colour, etc. and disposes of it in an eco-friendly way. “There are tons of uses for these items and this allows us to keep chemicals out of our landfills,” says Zaruk. “We feel it’s super important to be natural, organic and eco-friendly. We’re trying to do our part, and we think our clients appreciate everything we offer.”

Salon H is home to 10 stylists with over 100 years of experience among them; Sparkes has 16 years of styling experience in her own right. The stylists each have their own areas of expertise, ranging from all colouring, blonding, bobs and precision cuts. “When we opened Salon H we had one goal – to have a group of highly educated stylists that love doing hair, offering clients the ultimate experience,” says Zaruk. “When you walk into our doors, you will be greeted with a smile and taken care of by everyone on our team.”

iving in Manitoba, revelling in our glorious summers is a must. The memories of summers past and promises of warmer days to come get us through those cold winters every year. So it’s imperative that we fully embrace those long summer days with a gorgeous green oasis at home. And when you have a stunning home with a coveted walkout basement on a lake, you go all in.

“Every walkout basement home on a lake should have the million dollar look,” says Pedro Gomes, president of Prelude Landscaping, the company that designed and created this splendid space in Winnipeg’s South Pointe.

“We designed, graded and built the space to give that relaxed feeling. The customer walks out of the house and right onto the upper patio, which is linked to green spaces, raised garden beds, a water feature and grandiose walkway to the lower fire pit patio.” No stone was left unturned in the back or front yards. “Attention to detail and quality workmanship is something that we take great pride in for all of our projects,” says Gomes. Some of those finer details are the flowing stone-raised islands in the backyard and the raised islands with black granite boulders and stone walls in the front. Keystone bricks come

together to create a retaining wall that doubles as extra seating around the fire pit. A water feature and LED lighting in the front and back allows the homeowner to enjoy the outdoor haven after the sun goes down. “Function is very important in all of our projects. We incorporated a stone border, both front and back, so when the customer mows the lawn, there is no need to use a trimmer. It’s simple, but effective,” says Gomes. This sensible addition also offers a polished touch to the beautiful shrubbery and a nice contrast to the bright grass. Perennial shrubs and Indigenous trees complement the lake and natural surroundings, with occasional pops of red and pink to keep the mood tranquil. A variety of stone and brick was used to create depth. The stately walkway, as well as the upper patio, is Navarro stone to withstand heavy traffic, with a Holland stone border for a timeless look. The paving stone is a Barkman product and flagstone was used for the fire pit patio. When you truly love what you do, it shows in the work, and Gomes’s passion for designing green spaces and the pride when a project comes to life is evident here. “Meeting or going beyond my clients’ expectations – that is the greatest feeling in the world,” he says.

OUTDOOR LIVING

Gomes credits Prelude’s employees for transforming his designs into fantastic outdoor living spaces and sharing his passion for developing beautiful outdoor living spaces. “We are fortunate to have fantastic, friendly, professional employees who have been with us in excess of seven years. Clients constantly praise how hard they work, how professional and friendly they are, and how they keep the work space clean.” This hard work has been recognized by the industry and clients alike. OUTDOOR LIVING Game on A Sport Court in your yard sounds like a true luxury item reserved for professional athletes or millionaires, but they’re much more common and affordable than you’d think. Winnipeg’s own Athletic Flooring Systems can create a court that is fully customizable and suitable for any sport you want to play. Even homes with smaller yards can get in on the action, as the company can design a court to fit the available area and needs. The possibilities are truly endless, from all-season, multi-sport game courts and synthetic putting greens to outdoor rinks. Indoor spaces can also be transformed into a court, gym or studio for yoga and dance. The only downside is that after you’ve played on one of these sport courts, you’ll never want to use a schoolyard court again. “Our courts offer shock absorption, lateral forgiveness and are maintenance free,” says Athletic Flooring’s Gary Weinberg. The company will take care of every aspect, including accessories such as commercial adjustable hoop systems, sport nets and hockey boards. Each court comes with a 15-year warranty, but last closer to 25 years.

44 | STYLE MANITOBA | AUTUMN 2019

“Our courts are built for safety and fun but also built to last,” says Weinberg. If you’re considering a full backyard revamp, Athletic Flooring’s sister company, 3 Seasons Landscaping, can work hand-in-hand in designing your entire outdoor space.

Turn Up the Heat Firepits in Manitoba backyards are becoming as essential as Adirondack chairs and BBQs, and are a relaxing way to experience the outdoors anytime of year. This built-in firepit in South Pointe, created by 3 Seasons Landscaping, creates a cozy atmosphere and becomes an extension of the home, adjacent to the deck and screen room. “As the house is a lakefront walkout, there was a significant slope down to the water as soon as you exit the back door. So retaining walls and stairs were used not only to step down the patio to deal with the grade change, but also to create extra seating and a cozy, sunken feel,” says Paul Szakacs, landscape designer for 3 Seasons. “In the end, it looks as if it was done for aesthetics as much as function or requirement.” Wrapping around the patio and firepit are gardens filled with bright, colourful roses, hydrangeas and perennials to add a new dimension against the Barkman Roman pavers and Roman Pisa retaining wall block. The layout was thoughtfully organized to be low maintenance for the homeowner. Szakacs explains that all features were centralized, rather than having sprawling beds, paths and sitting areas strewn about the property, keep-

ing yard work straightforward. The garden beds are also easily maintained as 3 Seasons Landscaping installed rock and weed barriers as well as an underground irrigation system to eliminate the need for watering.

Lifestyle Leader SunShade is the Manitoba leader in threeseason sunrooms for good reason. “Most say they are experts at what they do, but we were the first and we are still here after more than 40 years as a company that designs and manufactures sunrooms right here in Winnipeg,” says company president Steve Sarens. Sarens tells Style Manitoba that the fact they custom build each sunroom from scratch means they have a greater ability to work with existing home designs. “Our panels are made in our factory and are unique to each design and job. This means panel heights can be exact to 1/16th of an inch and don’t require messy fixes like bulkheads that can spoil the overall appearance,” he says, adding that crews typically build a SunShade sunroom on-site in under a week with many jobs running about three days for the room itself, and another couple of days to create a side deck and install railings. At SunShade it all starts with the designer. “Our designers can discuss pros and cons and our mission is to create a functional room at a reasonable cost. Our processes

Inspiration for a Unique Front Door In a home, the front door is one of the defining architectural features. It can provide a feeling of comfort, warmth, and security. At the same time, it can be bold, distinct, and playful. The beauty is that you can take the design in many directions. Henry Ford’s “you can have any colour, so long as it’s black” has evolved markedly towards customization for individual homes. BOLD AND COLOURFUL One of the best ways to bring out your front entrance is with a bright pop of colour. Consider crimson red, sunny yellow, and bright orange for a bold statement, or alternatively, woodgrain to bring warmth and timelessness to your home. LOOK UP Build height into your front entry. There’s an impressive feel to a 10 or 12-foot entrance, or even 14! Height can be achieved with either very tall door panels or transoms, allowing natural light in. SIMPLICITY RULES In the past, doors were intricately decorated with stained glass, beveled glass, and wrought iron. Today, styles are very streamlined, with

minimal detailing or embossing on the panel, and lots of glass. Keep it simple for maximum effect. PRIVACY How much privacy would you like? Think about how much glass you have in the design, and what visitors can see when they walk up to the door. Consider obscured glass or a peep hole.

imber Ridge Homes builds properties that offer an escape from the stresses of the daily grind. And they do it with an eye toward creating cottage country vacation homes that take lake life to a higher level. A good case in point is a new build recently completed at Falcon Lake, Manitoba, about 150 kilometres east of Winnipeg near the Ontario border. This retreat is a 2800 squarefoot hybrid timber frame beauty on two levels. “The Falcon Lake build is more contemporary than traditional,” says Jason Fehr, who together with partner Gerrilyn, operates the Mitchell, Manitoba-based business that has become a go-to company for design and construction of timber frame homes and cottages over the past 16 years. He reports that the Falcon Lake clients had viewed their show cottage at Caddy Lake in Manitoba’s Whiteshell Provincial Park.

“The Caddy Lake property wowed them and helped them decide to come to us for advice and construction,” he says, adding that the clients had found a property in the Muskoka region in Ontario cottage country as a template. “We were able to take their dream and turn it into a reality,” he remarks. The Falcon Lake home away from home is an open and airy design that features 10-foot ceilings on the main floor. “We were able to achieve much thanks to our use of a truss system that permitted a complex roofline with no interior impediments. We used I beams, LVL (Laminated Veneer Lumber), and other techniques in this approach,” explains Jason, remarking that LVL is stronger than solid timber and is manufactured by bonding together peeled or thin wood veneers under heat and pressure. The high ceilings also provided the right setting for the massive tall fireplace that is a central focus of the great room. Here, stacked ledge stone reaches to the ceiling and marries well with the timber accents to create an interior design that complements the white of the contemporary colour palette. According to Jason, they had to remove some of the veranda roof to accommodate the overall square footage of the building and have it fit into the allowable coverage of the property. They then installed timbers to create a pergolastyle roof over this portion of the veranda.

“We offer design advice starting at the front end to help our clients achieve the most from their properties. People tell us what they want to achieve in the design and we show them how this can be done,” he says.

Comfort is essential in a well-considered lake home. Helping Timber Ridge achieve this goal at the Falcon Lake residence was Durabuilt Windows & Doors, a supplier that provided the triple-pane glazing that opens the design and brings the beauty of the outside indoors. They also turned to WeatherMaster for solutions in the multi-season sunroom where a combination of glass and screen elements work to deliver a room that is comfortable from March through to November. “The sunroom at the Falcon Lake home not only adds months to the use of this area but adds visually to the design. A porch is great, but a sunroom provides longer enjoyment of the exterior environment. And isn’t that what living at the lake is all about?” Jason suggests the quality of their suppliers is certainly one reason for the growing success of Timber Ridge Homes. “We have a wide range of leading companies we do business with, and they help us stay on the cutting edge. For example, Falcon Lake-based Lumber One was the supplier of the building materials. They were able to deliver quality material on time and at a competitive price, and they are in the area so they understand how to get product to the site in the best possible manner.” Relationships with local government agencies are another key element to how Timber Ridge was able to get this Falcon Lake property into the hands of the client as quickly as possible. “We have done 15 to 20 new builds

in Whiteshell Provincial Park and have established a strong working relationship with Manitoba Parks & Recreation. We understand the regulations and the mission of the agency. Together, we work as a team to make the build as seamless as possible given the pristine nature of the environment in this beautiful area.” Jason reports that for new clients it all starts with an initial meeting to establish the big picture. “Then we get together at the design stage and invite interaction as we move forward. All along the way, we encourage clients to be on-site as often as they can. This helps to ensure we are meeting all expectations. This was certainly the case with the recent Falcon Lake project, where we saw the client frequently. Our goal is to have the new home achieve its full potential, and when clients input and ask questions, this helps us get to a

place of total satisfaction for them,” he says, remarking that as they build these cottage residences, they see how the new lake homes take on lives of their own, becoming just like a new member of the family. Moving Forward By Kelly Gray Photography: Michael Roberts There are great things building at Winnipeg’s Springhill Lumber, a company that has been a fixture on De Vries Ave. in northeast Winnipeg for decades. The company has announced they will be moving to a new location at 540 Caron Road in Headingley on the city’s western edge. “The new site will be five times bigger than where we are now,” says Don Henzel, General Manager Springhill Lumber. He reports that they have just moved the truss plant over from Elie to this new location, with the general offices and store just now preparing for the move that will come early next year. “We will have 50,000 square feet of retail store space, which is a big gain for our customers. We will also have cross-docking facilities to make shipping and receiving a much easier task, which will mean shorter wait times for customers. This new site will put everything in one location. All our resources and all our people will be in one place. This will mean a big enhancement for customer service, thanks to greater efficiency,” he says, noting that crews will start construction of the new building this September with the opening slated for 2020. New as well is Springhill’s association with Marvin Windows. The company has just reported that they have inked a deal making them Winnipeg’s newest Marvin distributor. “We went to the facility in Warroad, Minnesota and we liked what we saw. Currently, there is a growing demand for higher-end products and we saw an opportunity to bring these hi-spec windows to our customers here. We also carry other window manufacturers, but now we have a full spectrum of products that can meet all our customers’ demands.”

Springhill never stays still when it comes to sourcing new product innovation. For example, they have just brought in a line of bamboo decking. “This product range is not only durable and great looking but is environmentally sustainable as well,” says Henzel, commenting that great product assortment is only part of the equation at Springhill Lumber. “Our sales staff are very knowledgeable and they are customer-focused. This is certainly one area where we differ from big box retailers and Internet sites where knowledge sets can often be less than desired. Our people know the products and understand their applications. This means our customers get the right products when they need them at competitive prices.”

Springhill Lumber is also a one-stop-shop for home and cottage packages and RTM (Ready to Move) homes. “We have truss and flooring designers on-site to answer questions and help get projects moving in the right direction. For example, we do a lot of work for First Nation communities where there are serious time crunches given weather and delivery challenges. We are able to work with those challenges and get our tradespeople and products up to remote communities and get the job done,” he says, inviting people to visit them at their current location at 1820 De Vries Ave. or check out their website www.springhilllumber.com. to discover the difference the professionals make at this long-standing building product retailer.

A Parade Like No Other

s the leaves begin to turn, it is again time for the Fall Parade of Homes, an annual event that showcases the best Manitoba’s new home builders have to offer. Presented by the Manitoba Home Builders’ Association (MHBA), the event has grown to become the largest Parade of Homes in Canada. This season’s parade runs from September 7-29, 2019 at a vast range of locations around Winnipeg and in surrounding areas.

that will certainly allow the Manitoba edition of this event to stay in the top spot among Canada’s Parade locations. Altogether, there are 38 builders presenting in the September event. “Visiting our Parade homes and talking to the sales agents about different options and features will help you to find that perfect fit for you and your family. These showhomes represent the best in home design and construction available

anywhere in Canada,” enthuses McInnes, inviting people to circle September 7-29 as dates for new home discovery. Showhomes are open for viewing Monday to Thursday 3:00 PM to 8:00 PM, and Saturday and Sunday from 12:00 PM to 6:00 PM. For more information visit www.homebuilders.mb.ca

“The Parade is a unique opportunity for both builder and new home buyer,” says MHBA President and CEO, Lanny McInnes, reporting that the Parade has become even more visitable, thanks to enhanced social media interaction where new home buyers can check out Facebook, Twitter and Instagram for up-tothe-minute descriptions, locations, and general information. This means less driving and more viewing. Why just read about open concept living when you can see it for yourself in a range of colour palettes, materials, and configurations on-site? The Parade is the best way to check out all the latest new home designs in a format that makes it easy,” he notes. This fall edition has grown over the past few months since the association staged the Spring Parade of Homes when 31 builders offered 132 new home models. This time around, the MHBA is presenting 139 new homes, a number AUTUMN 2019 | STYLE MANITOBA | 57

HOMES &

No compromise

Neighbourhoods

City and country lifestyle intersect just 10 minutes east of Portage & Main at Countryside Crossing. This premier development is located off Henderson Highway in East St. Paul, while actually sited within Winnipeg’s Perimeter. Large estate-sized lots and sweeping views of nature combine with easy access to city services to create a community where compromise is just another word in the dictionary. According to Realtor® Mark Penner with Royal Lepage, sales continue to be very strong for the remaining lots. “There are now less than 20 properties available, but many of these are stunning water lots,” he says, adding that footprints are 10,000 square feet at minimum. “These lot sizes mean designs can offer ample space for country-sized living. The proximity to Winnipeg also means close-at-hand shopping, healthcare, education, and activities, but with a lower tax hit and no impact fee.” AWC Builders has constructed a display home that will be available for viewing in the Fall Parade of Homes, a first for the community that has been somewhat unique in its development model. Unlike other prominent new housing sites, lot buyers at Countryside Crossing have

not been tied to any one builder. Indeed, once a lot has been selected, a buyer can choose any contractor, as long as basic architectural guidelines are met. “Discover the advantages of this mature neighbourhood that is at once both rural and urban,” says Penner, inviting new home buyers to visit www.countrysidecrossing.com to see just how unique this development is.

A property to come home to 360 Willow Creek Road in Bridgwater Trails is yet another masterpiece from Gino’s Homes. This Parade of Homes property offers more than 4,500 square feet of interior space over three gorgeous levels, featuring unique aspects such as a spice kitchen in addition to a main level master kitchen with quartz counters and walnut cabinets. The flagship property for Gino’s Homes for the Fall 2019 Parade, this location really shows off the superior quality of construction and the notable value this builder is known for. The residence provides impressive living spaces on the top two floors, along with a fully developed lower level that features a tremendous lake view and walkout. This property delivers a full outside experience, thanks to a massive pie-shaped lot that is almost 200 feet deep and over 80 feet wide fronting onto the lake. It’s fully landscaped, complete with custom reading areas in the front yard, backyard fire pit and roofed patios.

Thoughtful finishes include top tier plank style flooring on the main level, with carpeting and ceramics on the other floors. The plank flooring is both tasteful and durable, ideal for growing families.

Inside, there is a loft and four ample bedrooms on the upper level, and another private bedroom with an adjoining ensuite bathroom in the lower level, all built on a structural wood floor.

Indeed, the interior itself is designed with family life in mind. The concept is open and airy, with design elements such as glass stair railings that contribute to the expansive feeling throughout.

Walnut accents add to the overall warmth of décor. Gino’s Homes is well known for designs that are practical with an eye to detail - designs that are modern, yet offer a comfortable feel. These are properties you will want to come home to. Visit www.ginoshomes.ca for more information.

2019 Parade Of Homes Development: Country Side Crossing Address: 200 Saddle Ridge Lane, East St Paul MB

Development: Waytiuk Estates Address: 7 Harry Waytiuk Drive, East Selkirk MB

This gorgeous and nearly perfect house will stun you with its modern and dazzling interior finishes. From the open-concept kitchen and living space to the large backyard, there is plenty of room for the whole family to enjoy.

This stunning two-story home is on a large lot in the newest development in East Selkirk. Situated in a family-friendly neighborhood 5 minutes from the City of Selkirk and all of the amazing ammenities it has to offer.

New kid on the block AWC Builders have a new division that promises to take new home development to another level in the Manitoba market. The division is called Danzante Living, and its mission is to deliver affordable luxury to design / build homebuyers. “We are off to a great start,” says Steven McMullin, Director of Marketing, Sales and Business Development at AWC Builders Ltd. He reports that the idea behind Danzante Living is to excite the market with custom build options in three price points. “We design from scratch for individual needs. We have three style configurations for our designs that address the public demand for safe, smart, and healthy communities,” he says, noting the styles are termed Innovation Series, Revolution Series, and Luxury Series. McMullin notes that Danzante Living is entering into 16 subdivisions with lot purchases and has plans to get underway shortly with buildings in each of those locations. “No matter where your neighbourhood preference might be, there is a good chance we will be present with one of our insightful designs.” Danzante is a dream-your-design to door key builder who walks clients through the entire process. “We have homes from $300,000 to ‘the sky’s the limit’,” says McMullin, commenting that most of their tradespeople are employees and they look to Manitoba companies for materials when possible. Here, Realtor® Phil Mosher of Keller & Williams Real Estate Services, Danzante Living’s sales manager, mentions the uncompromising drive to quality. “Others may charge for things like air conditioning or nickel dime buyers on millwork options. Danzante Living’s plans make design greatness standard,” he says, pointing to two properties, 200 Saddleridge Lane in East St. Paul and 7 Harry Waytiuk in East Selkirk, that show off this ideal.

“The address says East St. Paul, but the location is inside Winnipeg’s Perimeter,” says Mosher, mentioning the benefits of the Countryside Crossing neighbourhood. “Taxes are lower in East St. Paul, but the closeness to Winnipeg means residents can enjoy all the urban amenities without the higher costs associated with a Winnipeg residence.” 7 Harry Waytiuk Drive is located in East Selkirk in a new development built by the Waytiuk family on lands that were homesteaded by their grandfather. The home is a bungalow that provides more than 1500 square feet with three bedrooms and three baths. According to Mosher, this property is part of their Revolution Series and has people asking him how they can offer so much value at this price point well under $500,000. “We have more control over the build, because of the design process and the fact that most of the trades are employees of the company. This means greater efficiency and greater attention to detail,” he says, adding that 7 Harry Waytiuk Drive also comes with a large mudroom / laundry room, an open floor plan with great room, dining room and spacious eat-in kitchen. There is also an ample triple door attached garage that truly brings country living home. Discover the difference Danzante Living brings to the Manitoba housing market. Visit www.danzanteliving.ca for more information.

Building a Better Tomorrow, Today

200 Saddleridge Lane in East St. Paul is a 1771 square foot bungalow with 4 bedrooms plus den, 2.5 baths and a fully developed lower level. This is Danzante Living’s first foray into the near Winnipeg market. According to Mosher, this luxury property features vaulted ceilings, a gorgeous ensuite and covered deck that has access from both the master bedroom and dining area. The lot itself is 2/3 of an acre. This means plenty of room for privacy and space to gather to watch sunsets in the west-facing backyard. Inside, bedrooms are nicely separated to deliver an enclave feel to sleeping areas. The master ensuite features both tub and large walk-in shower with plenty of floor space to accommodate busy lifestyles. The lower level offers another bedroom, as well as a media area.

“What sets Prairie Pointe apart from other areas is that we have flexible design restrictions,” says Michael Carruthers, manager of land development for Ladco Company Ltd., the developers of Prairie Pointe. “We allow builders to be creative, so builders can build the house their designers want, the house the homeowners want.”

Ventura Homes has a new floor plan that boasts a modern exterior, spacious open-concept layout, loft space on the second floor, and a large bedroom and bath on the main level to accommodate multi-generational families, those with special needs or out-of-town guests.

or many, new housing developments evoke images of cookie-cutter homes with nary a tree-lined street, but new does not have to equal monotonous. In Winnipeg’s southwest corner, the up-and-coming area of Prairie Pointe is bringing a fresh point-of-view to new developments.

“Prairie Pointe has been one of the most popular subdivisions for several years in a row for a multitude of reasons,” says Arin Comack, assistant general manager for Ventura Custom Homes Ltd. “First, affordability is critically important to everyone and lots in Prairie Pointe are priced very competitively. Second, unlike many other neighborhoods, building in Prairie Pointe gives clients unparalleled architectural flexibility as there are no rigid design restrictions. This permits clients to spend their budgets as they see

Free of limitations, builders have created innovative and distinctive homes with thoughtful touches that consider today’s homeowners’ needs and wants.

Randall Homes also has a new two-storey showhome in the area. The 1,899 square foot house has all the features homebuyers crave, including nine-foot ceilings on the main floor, upstairs laundry, deluxe master ensuite and bedroom, and three-piece bathroom on the main level. “Many of our customers that have chosen to build a Randall home have made Prairie Pointe their preferred choice neighbourhood since it is ideally located and close to everything that matters for a family in a new area – schools, shopping, religious institutions,” says Jason Jaquet, vice president of Randall Homes.

Looking past the windows and doors, the area’s natural beauty is coupled with existing and planned green spaces, including playgrounds, sports fields and ponds. “We’re developing our first park that will be open in the fall of 2019,” says Carruthers. “It’s a park for kids of all ages, with a unique play structure, covered picnic shelter, fire pit and sports field.” Future green spaces include a walkway along the lake behind Berryhill Drive and an additional park. More than 400 building lots have been sold since 2015, and approximately 300 more will be available beginning in fall 2019. A diverse range of housing is available, including homes backing onto a lake or park, duplexes, townhomes and a variety of single-family homes. Growth in Prairie Pointe will continue to be strong for many years as the 640-acre community will eventually be home to more than 2,000 families. Learn more at www.ladco.mb.ca or visit during the Fall 2019 Parade of Homes.

The close proximity to the University of Manitoba and Victoria General Hospital, as well as easy access to the Perimeter Highway and lake country, and links to active transportation networks are major selling features, but Jaquet also points to the strong sense of community that is already well established in Prairie Pointe. The types of homes available range from townhomes and duplexes all the way up to million dollar lake houses, which means everyone can

or 30-plus years, Huntington Homes has maintained a reputation for the highest customer satisfaction level of builders in Winnipeg.

“We believe that it’s critical to service our clients above and beyond, the way that we’d want to be looked after if we were the client,” says Rob Swan, owner of Huntington Homes. “Our clients are spending a lot of money to build a custom home with us, and they deserve to be taken care of promptly. Most of our new clients come from referrals and that wouldn’t happen if our clients weren’t being treated like gold.” That gold-plated treatment consists of two keys: maintaining a close relationship with clients through constant verbal and written communication, and a systemized approach that ensures everything goes smoothly throughout the build. “Building to a top-level specification that’s second to none is just the starting point with Huntington. Our proprietary GPS System ensures a smooth, timely build that simplifies construction for our clients,” says Swan. He adds that the GPS System is also there to keep clients on track.

“Although we’ve built hundreds of custom homes over the years, most of our clients have never custom built before. The GPS System helps them organize and make their selections in a timely order and guides them through everything in a logical, efficient manner.” Additionally, Huntington’s Sales and Design departments spend a lot of time with their clients prior to breaking ground so that major design decisions aren’t being made during the build. Every detail in the home has been well thought out, and detailed drawings are incorporated into the plan prior to starting construction. This ensures that the client understands and gets exactly what they’re looking for. That way, changes during the build are kept to a minimum, which keeps things on target from both a timing and cost standpoint. With no unforeseen costs or delays, the client can enjoy the process of watching their dream

home come together in an ever-so-efficient fashion. “Because we make a point of really honing in on a client’s needs, we understand exactly what they want and need in each room – details, placement, orientation and finishes,” he says. “It’s no accident that things run smoothly; it’s a thorough, well-thought-out approach.” That highly detailed approach leads to a truly custom home in which every space is tailored to a client’s preferences. “Once the home is completed, it’s a total reflection of the client,” says Swan. “Above all, the home is functional from start to finish. Flow is seamless, natural light abounds, and the finishing details create a warm, welcoming environment.” If you want a home that’s designed and Built Like No Other, there’s only one choice: Huntington Homes.

And for those looking to make the most of this lifestyle opportunity, Prairie View Lakes has just released an additional 35 lots in its new phases 6 and 7. Prairie View Lakes is a master-planned community located inside the riverside town of La Salle. Up to now, the development has been fully subscribed.

Prairie View Lakes’ popularity is driven by factors such as larger lot sizes than Winnipeg, lower acquisition costs without bills such as

Winnipeg’s Impact Fee, and lower taxes. There are also plenty of community amenities that include a recreation and fitness centre, 200 licensed daycare spots, a K-8 school, grocery store, gas station and more. La Salle is family focused living where residents know their neighbours.

Winter 2017

“There has been strong demand for properties in this neighbourhood and we are excited to get these new phases underway,” says Tim Comack, Vice-president, Ventura, the firm behind Prairie View Lakes. He reports 60 percent of new building lots are in the hands of frontline Manitoba homebuilders with the remaining building lots available for purchase. Buyers can work with the participating builders or choose their own builder.

Adding personal touches turns a house into your home, but Warkentin Homes are thoughtfully created to make it yours before you move in. The interior designer for Warkentin Homes, Karen Zapp, works with each client to create their vision. “Karen is a significant resource and influence in the design and feel of our homes,” says Melanie Snow, owner of Warkentin Homes. Here, in the open concept living room, unique elements were carefully considered from floor to 10-foot ceiling. A distinctive linear gas fireplace and entertainment centre is accented with formart decorative wavy panels and tile for a striking feature wall that still provides a comfortable setting for downtime. Wide planks of rustic oak hardwood flooring bring a traditional element while maintaining the airy feel. Large, triple-pane windows warm the space with natural light, and a clean paint choice (Sherwin Williams SW7011 Natural Choice) keeps the room calm, allowing accents to pop. The entire 1,645-square-foot bungalow is thoughtfully laid out with two large bedrooms

on one side of the home, and the master bedroom and ensuite on the other for ample privacy. Quality materials were used from start to finish, such as silent floor joists, 9” thick concrete foundation wall and energy-efficient features, explains Snow.

At home with nature in RidgeWood West

R

idgeWood West is a scenic community, closely tied to the Charleswood area. With an array of naturalized wetlands, forests and trails, residents can connect with nature right outside their door. Philip Jenkinson and his family have been living in RidgeWood West for four years. “We love the Charleswood area and being close to the perimeter,” explains Jenkinson. “The main selling feature for us when moving into RidgeWood West was having the chance to choose a lot that backs onto the Harte Trail. The Harte Trail is a 6.5 km crushed limestone path that runs along lush forest, open prairie and provides plenty of opportunities to see and hear a variety of wildlife. The trail itself is elevated from its surroundings as it sits on an old railway bed. Today the Harte Trail is used regularly by people who want to avoid the rush of traffic and enjoy a peaceful setting while they bike, run or walk. Jenkinson jogs on the Harte Trail daily and since moving into RidgeWood West, he has become

the executive director for Friends of the Harte Trail. The volunteer group works towards maintaining the path and its surrounding habitats. “I joined because I use the trail often and I want to see how we can make a positive impact on the community,” says Jenkinson. “We’re working towards planting more trees from the Van Roon Prairie Garden in the east to the perimeter on the west, so eventually they will create a canopy over that portion of the trail.” Friends of the Harte Trail began planting donated trees along the trail in 2018, and have had three successful tree planting sessions since. They also provide community clean-ups and the installation of birdhouses along the trail. “We are completely volunteer based with six members, so we raise donations throughout the year to hire a Green Team who help maintain the trail from spring and into the fall,” adds Jenkinson. While developing RidgeWood West, Qualico Communities worked closely with Friends of the Harte Trail to keep them informed on future development in the community and to receive their valuable feedback. To become a member of Friends of the Harte Trail, residents are encouraged to email info@hartetrail.com or visit their website at hartetrail.com

“Just as people walk along a hallway to reach different rooms, animals also need spaces within a landscape to help them move from one habitat to another,” explains Alaina Saper, design assistant at Qualico Communities. “The narrow strip of wilderness that buffers the Harte Trail serves as an important wildlife movement corridor that links up with Assiniboine Forest, Park and River which are all vital pieces that form a greater biological community.” The trails within RidgeWood West were created to complement and connect to the Harte Trail. “Since the Harte Trail borders on the community’s northern perimeter, it was a good starting point in how we aligned our trails and wetlands throughout,” says Tara Reid, sales and development manager at Qualico Communities. Living in RidgeWood West gives residents the ability to live an active lifestyle while enjoying nature. With the Harte Trail running alongside the community, residents in RidgeWood West are connected to places such as the Assiniboine Forest and Fort Whyte. It’s just a matter of grabbing your walking shoes or hopping on your bicycle and heading to the trail.

Over the years, oak and aspen trees as well as fruit bearing shrubs like the Saskatoon have grown along the edges of the Harte Trail. The combination of wooded and open areas in RidgeWood West provides residents with regular glimpses of wildlife. Some animals that can be spotted in these areas include deer, rabbits, foxes and owls.

From towering stone pillars that mark the wetlands to whimsical willow tunnels, a variety of public art pieces are strategically interwoven throughout Sage Creek to create a lasting impact to both its visitors and residents.

This custom piece will be located on Burning Glass Road in the north commercial area. It will have distinctive landscaping with seating around the scene where people can view the display up close. From afar, this piece can be viewed as a mural with multiple layers.

age Creek is a thriving community located on the southeastern edge of Winnipeg. This growing neighbourhood has been thoughtfully designed using architectural guidelines to create streetscapes that allow for creative sightlines throughout the community. Utilizing a variety of home styles, fencing types, landscaping and public art, Sage Creek is an unexpectedly complete and vibrant new community.

“We place public art into our communities to add to the sense of place and to create an area that you can feel good about calling home,” says Trevor Grafton, planning and design coordinator at Qualico Communities. Sky Spirit is a striking feature located in Sage Creek’s Village Centre plaza. The plaza is landscaped with seating and provides gathering opportunities for special events. Designed by local artist Darren Sakwi, this contemporary piece has a ribbon-like structure that is made of stainless steel. With rotating LED lights that bounce off of its surface in the evening, this sculpture appears as though it is floating – similar to the aurora borealis. “The aurora borealis is something we don’t see every day but when you do, it really stops you in your tracks and makes you want to take a break to cherish the sight,” says Sakwi. With multi-functionality, spaces such as Sage Creek’s Village Centre plaza encourage residents to connect with their neighbours and engage

with their environment. Similarly, the public art in Sage Creek aims to boost onlookers’ moods and inspire creativity within the community. To help establish way-finding patterns within Sage Creek, two corten steel sculptures stand in the centre of traffic circles. The Four Winds, which serves as a tribute to birds flying on the directional winds, and Flight, which depicts Canada Geese taking flight and forming their classic V formation, were created by local artist David MacNair with assistance from his friend and fellow artist Barry Bonham. However, not all of Sage Creek’s public art pieces are sculptures. The willow tunnel is a living art piece made of weeping willows that climb and spread along a metal structure. This enchanting feature provides shade and is a place to explore during the summer. The willow tunnel is located in the nature trail dry pond just north of Tallgrass Crescent, between the Hydro Corridor and Des Hivernants Boulevard.

“Sage Creek tells a story of nature and the people who lived in the area prior to the days the land was farmed,” explains Mike Armstrong, operations manager at Qualico Communities. “You can see many of these themes reflected in the street names and public art pieces,” adds Grafton. For those searching for a neighbourhood with something extra, Sage Creek hits the mark. This charming neighbourhood has evolved over 13 years into the vibrant and thriving community it is today.

Coming to Sage Creek this fall is MacNair and Bonham’s latest creation, L’Hivernant and the Burning Glass. Inspired by Sage Creek’s historical street names, L’Hivernant and the Burning Glass is an educational wall sculpture that depicts an early period voyageur with some AUTUMN 2019 | STYLE MANITOBA | 73

ld world craftsmanship intersects with modern design at 14 Wildflower Way in Sage Creek. This new 1,848 square-foot, three-bedroom, two-bathroom bungalow is a creation of H. Albers Builders, a company known for its commitment to construction excellence. Indeed, for H. (Heinz) Albers, it’s all about the details and this inviting residence is a strong example of their quality first approach. “When people walk into this home, the first impression is a resounding ‘Wow’,” says Realtor® Jinny Camara, exclusive agent for H. Albers Builders. “At first glance, the flooring, the lighting and the overall build deliver a feeling of quality that then carries right through the property,” she says, mentioning the grand entranceway that flows to a double-sided fireplace and the great-room beyond. With H. Albers’ projects there are no surprises and no compromises.

And, while the kitchen offers tasteful wood accents, it also comes forward with a modern simplicity, thanks to white facings on custom cabinetry, quartz counters, and a familyfriendly center island. Lighting, as supplied by Winnipeg-based SuperLite, is slim panel LED, a new style of illumination that is now found in 90 percent of new home construction and offers better spread than older systems. Window treatments were created by Labossiere Devine Interiors, a Winnipeg designer that is also responsible for the showhome staging. Cabinets are made using walnut rather than less expensive options, yet another example of H. Albers no compromise approach.

“There is a timelessness to these designs. As a realtor, I can often tell at first look when a resale home was built. With Heinz’s work, it is not so easy because of the painstaking attention to detail that is seen in the finishing work, the materials and overall craftsmanship, as well as plans that offer simplicity of lines and flow. These are not cookie-cutter designs.” The Sage Creek residence also offers privacy. The master bedroom is an enclave in the house with a separate ensuite that features a massive walk-in shower as well as tub, and a vast array of custom finished cabinets. The second and third bedrooms are away from this area, as is the second bathroom.

“These are homes that stand up to the test of time,” she says, pointing to standard construction upticks such as 9-inch foundation walls, screwed and glued plywood underlay, and overspec concrete that resists cracking and heaving. At 14 Wildflower Way, H. Albers Builders has designed a home that offers a lot of the company’s characteristic architectural attributes. For example, the wood feature wall in the kitchen delivers warmth to the efficiency of the easy flow of this hard working area. “Heinz Albers is a European-trained cabinetmaker, and his love of wood shows in his designs.”

“This configuration is ideal for families with teenagers who tend to want a bit more distance from parents. This is a home where the open elements contribute to community while everyone can still enjoy a place of their own,” she suggests. Even the garage is taken to another level. At 24 by 24 feet, this utility space is large enough to accommodate two cars and a few toys. It is also insulated and drywalled to create a clean multi-purpose space. “The door to the garage is yet another indication of the quality of this build. It features jackshaft operation and is fully insulated. This means lower energy costs, quiet running and less maintenance over the long term,” she notes. “This is a property with great connectivity to other parts of the city, and Sage Creek offers all the stores and services people need to get on with daily life,” says Camara, inviting people to discover 14 Wildflower Way by visiting www.albersbuilders.com

Staycation Living Imagine coming home to vacation living every day. That’s the vision behind the Hearth Homes showhome in Sage Creek – a mid-century modern tropical vacation home. This oasis is bright and full of life, with contemporary features and the warm Hearth style. “The idea behind this home was to provide an uninterrupted span across the entire rear of the house for living and entertaining,” says Liam Milne, Hearth Homes’ marketing manager. “We wanted to fill the space with windows and flood the home with natural light.” The 1,680-square-foot, 2-bedroom, 2-bathroom home is filled with unique features to create the ultimate sanctuary. Clerestory windows in the kitchen and dining room provide that generous

natural light. The zero-threshold shower, which doesn’t require stepping over a ledge, feels spalike while also being practical. A striking maple feature wall with custom metal panel inserts is like an art installation right at home. Clients can expect solid homes with spectacular

Nature lovers set down roots in Taylor Farm

Y

ou know how they say the best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago? Well, Qualico embraced that Chinese proverb by a multiple of five with its Taylor Farm community. Located near Headingley just west of Winnipeg and along the north side of the Assiniboine River, this unique neighbourhood features a 100-yearold basswood forest that not only provides canopy cover for residents but also attracts cavity-nesting animals such as woodpeckers and saw-whet owls. Basswood trees, which are far more common in Ontario, typically grow along riverbanks but many in Manitoba have been cut down over the years as cities and farming communities have expanded.

“To have a basswood forest is rare. It’s vulnerable. There’s no legislation to protect it,” said Bryana Nicolas, a conservation program specialist at Native Plant Solutions, a branch of Ducks Unlimited.

“I don’t know of any other development in the city that has a basswood forest. King’s Park near the University of Manitoba has some of the trees and there are isolated trees that have been planted around the city. But in terms of a forest, it doesn’t really exist in Winnipeg.” Compounding matters is basswoods can be quite difficult to grow because their seeds have very thick coats and take a long time to break down. It doesn’t help that they’re also tasty treats for a number of animal and bird species. “Basswood trees don’t have a lot of survivorship. Even in nurseries, it’s very low,” says Nicolas. “The strategic plan for Taylor Farm is to provide larger lots than what’s available in established neighbourhoods, such as River Heights or Fort Garry, while also providing a close connection to nature,” notes Bryan Ward, general manager of Qualico Communities. Lots range from 70 feet wide to 100 feet wide.

“We want to provide people with a different choice. It can appeal to families, retired folks, and people who are looking for a slightly different lifestyle than some of the urban neighbourhoods offer,” he adds. And while the connection to nature is a key selling point, it’s not as if Taylor Farm residents are cut off from the rest of the world. There are some small shops in Headingley, and major retailers are just a 10-minute drive away along Portage Avenue. Many of the landscape features in Taylor Farm have been designed with John Taylor in mind. A community leader in the late 1800s and early 1900s, he once owned the entire section of land along the Assiniboine River. He was also a provincial cabinet minister, a schoolteacher, a merchant and a farmer. Taylor Farm’s showhomes welcomed their first visitors in 2016, and since then, a growing number of families have chosen to set down roots there. As Taylor Farm grows, the preserved basswood trees will continue to be a vital part of the community, with natural trails leading to the forest for all residents to enjoy.

The Charles Condos – Perfect for a lock & leave lifestyle this winter! BY MARGAUX BRAUND

W

e hate to break it to you, but the -40 Celsius temperatures we dread every year are on their way back. And while many of us don’t mind (or even possibly enjoy) Winnipeg winters, others have figured out a way to avoid the shivering and the shoveling by downsizing into a condo and taking off for the winter.

If this sounds like the right plan for you, The Charles Condos by StreetSide Developments, located at 545 Dale Blvd in Charleswood may be the perfect place to call home. Neighbouring Park West’s amenities and echoing Charleswood’s natural landscape, The Charles is a new condominium development that offers all the contemporary comforts, plus some extras. Karin and David Bedard moved to The Charles from a home on a two acre property last year and have never looked back. When they were looking for a development to downsize from their home, The Charles stood out based on its location and amenities. Most of all, the Bedards

were looking for a place they could lock up for the winter and take off to go travelling to places like India and Las Vegas.

common green space at the development – a unique feature that mimics the use of a backyard or nearby park right at the property.

“We love living at The Charles because coming home from vacation now means not having to worry about grass cutting, snow removal or the general care of owning a home. We just unlock our door and things are exactly as we left them” said Karin Bedard.

In the winter, if you decide to take off somewhere warm, The Charles also offers heated, underground parking to keep your car safe and secure.

The Charles’s 1 & 2 bedroom condominiums range from 600 to 1,100 square feet and offer bright and open layouts. With a galley-style kitchen, proven to be the most effective way to maximize space, and a dazzling quartz island with plenty of counter space to prepare meals, there’s no shortage of stunning finishes that make a statement throughout the home. Common amenities also include an exercise room and lounge with pool table. In the summer months, The Charles residents can enjoy their own private balcony or the

Just across the street there’s the rinks and pool at Westdale Community Centre, and all the amenities of the Park West Village Mall including a yoga studio, No Frills grocery store, Shoppers Drug Mart, and Manitoba Liquor Mart. And when all those hours of coveting perfectly curated homes turns from pure viewing entertainment to a full-on redecorating project, where do you start? “I always like to start with two things: your biggest piece of furniture in the room - for example the sofa - then pick a statement piece to build from, like the area rug or wall art. Draw your style and colour from those pieces,” says April King-Calisto of The Dufresne Group. “Determine your budget, the size of your space, your needs (the must-haves) and wants (the would-be-nice-to-haves).”

Creating HGTV-worthy rooms BY AILEEN GOOS BERARD

Sometimes, it can be overwhelming narrowing down the needs versus wants, defining your style and fine-tuning your decorating approach. But as King-Calisto points out – style is subjective. “There are principles of interior design that, if followed, can go a long way in helping to make a room cohesive,” she says. “The great news is that there is a trend toward mixing styles – it’s not so cut and dry anymore. There are great resources out there if you are stuck – the web, HGTV, design magazines. And if all else fails, you can look at hiring a designer or decorator.” Enter the experts at Dufresne, who are trained to assist customers in bringing their space together. Not only does Dufresne offer all of the things we’ve come to expect, like furniture, bedding, appliances and electronics; they also have everything you’d need to decorate your home in a wide range of price points. Their sales professionals are trained on “Discovery,” which means spending time with customers to better understand their decorating style, how they want to use new items along with what they currently have. It’s one of the first steps in understanding a homeowner’s vision before helping them find the right pieces for their home. All sales professionals take Dufresne’s design science courses, which provide a wealth of expertise in the art of placement, colours and fabrics. They also receive hands-on product knowledge from vendors who often visit and share information about current trends and how best to use the different products. To make the shopping experience a little easier, Dufresne locations are designed according to styles: casual comfort, modern luxe, vintage charm. Speaking of trends, what’s the well-decorated home wearing for Fall 2019?

Colours include blush tones, dark green, apricot, matte black, and blues, which never seem to fade from the palette. Gold metals are on-point this season, but King-Calisto says mixing metals is a trend as well.

Spaces are taking on a clean and simple feeling that incorporates items with significant personal value or meaning, or customized pieces. Expect to see dark woods, multifunctional furniture pieces, geometric patterns, velvets, focal points created using amazing pieces of furniture and accents, and trendy bar / kitchen carts.

She cannot emphasize enough the importance of home accents to a room; they are the easiest and most cost-effective way to update a room, once you’ve found the perfect piece of furniture. “It gives a room character, style and it really finishes the look. I am talking about fabulous lamps, wall art, area rugs, accent pillows, and

some tabletop accessories. Rooms featured in design magazines wouldn’t look as fabulous without these accents,” she says. “At Dufresne, we have everything you need to accent your room and give it the character you are looking for, at a wide range of price points. We also have a really great custom furniture program that gives the customer the opportunity to find exactly what they are looking for. And our in-store experience and customer service is really important to Dufresne so that our customers truly do have a better experience.” AUTUMN 2019 | STYLE MANITOBA | 85

Ask the questions!!

Seeking out professional advice on specialized products is a key to spending wisely. Most of us browse products online regularly and many purchases are made there. But before hitting the buy button, think about whether or not you’ve asked all the pertinent questions about the products you’re buying. As the world of lighting has become so technical in the last decade, consumers need the advice of Lighting Specialists – a service that’s difficult to get online. In fact, many consumers have been disappointed with online lighting purchases because they did not perform properly or were not approved by CSA (Canadian Safety Standards). Robinson Lighting’s staff members are trained through the American Lighting Association’s training program. The Lighting Specialist course is an extensive residential lighting education program that provides industry pros with the tools to know and understand all the elements crucial for lighting a home properly. This includes understanding light output (now expressed in lumens), colour temperature and accuracy, various types and sources of light, and proper lighting layouts. The company’s extensive interactive showroom features hundreds of products that consumers can touch, feel and experience first hand. Come in and seek professional advice on your next project from a Lighting Specialist at Robinson Lighting, a family owned and operated lighting store for over 80 years. www.robinsonlightingcentre.com

They say the kitchen is the heart of the home, but it must also have some heavy-duty muscle to stand up to the rigors of daily use. Springfield Woodworking has created an immaculate kitchen that is as practical as it is stunning. “We custom build all our cabinets to fit our client’s space,” says owner Pauly Kleinsasser. “This space was well designed to feature a beautiful display area coupled with glass shelves and doors. Floor-to-ceiling cabinets and extra shelving gives a lot of storage space. The tall pantry cabinets have the extra benefit of rollout shelving.” The tall end unit is perfect for storing cleaning equipment, including the broom and vacuum. Pullout units on either side of the cooktop cabinet hold spices and have a fun bump-out feature, adding a unique element to the overall feel. The main area has a 36” cooktop with ample room on either side for prep. The 60-square-foot island features two tiers: standard counter height with a sink and dishwasher, and table-height tier for dining. All cabinets are maple wood. The outer perimeter has a stain in dark smoke while the island is a custom finish with an antique white paint base finished with a hand-brushed mocha glaze. Quartz countertops top it all off. Springfield Woodworking is Manitoba’s largest locally owned cabinet manufacturer.

Light Up the Room

When you turn a fireplace into a work of art, you add a layer of warmth that radiates beyond the flickering flames. Carrara Tile & Marble Ltd. has created a luminous fireplace with a seamless, modern design. The seamless aspect involved a carefully considered element: The decorative indent built in above the fireplace adds a distinguished look and seems completely natural but is also highly functional as it hides the joints. “The element that stands out to us is the reveal that is strategically placed,” says Matt Vaccaro, Carrara sales associate and grandson of founder Matteo Vaccaro. “It does two things: It is a design element, as well as eliminates a seam that would be highly visible and somewhat more difficult to achieve perfection in the manufacturing process.” The fireplace feature was created with Neolith sintered stone, which can withstand high temperatures and does not burn or let off smoke or toxic substances. This premium stone is also resistant to scratching, easy to clean and recyclable. (Carrara is Manitoba’s only Neolith retailer.) The colours - Arctic white and iron moss - offer a clean contrast, which perfectly suited the client’s vision of a minimalist design. Carrara Tile & Marble Ltd. has been family owned and operated for over 30 years and is one of Winnipeg’s largest retail hard surface showrooms. Kitchen Craft is one of those heart-warming, locally owned stories that make Manitobans proud. Founded more than 45 years ago in Winnipeg, the company has grown to become synonymous with high-quality cabinetry throughout Canada and the United States. Looking at this kitchen, it’s easy to see why. Here, function meets fashion with straight, clean lines. Multiple drawers and cabinets make the best use of the space without overpowering the room and offer generous storage options to make any home chef drool. The built-in oven and microwave create a seamless aesthetic while also offering an artistic element against the antique white Thermofoil cabinets. This kitchen is part of a New Generation Homes showhome. Kitchen designer Andy Schultz credits New Generation’s owners, Randy and Suzanne Marquette, for their vision throughout the home. “The multiple drawers and easily accessed full-height doors make this kitchen very functional, which is a big part of what New Generation Homes incorporates into each project,” says Schultz. “The accent colours and the feature wall in the adjoining room really set this apart from your average décor, and the credit goes to Randy and Suzanne for bringing that concept into the grand scheme of things.” To view this home featuring this stunning kitchen, visit New Generation Homes at 5015 Portage Avenue in Headingley.

Warm Up to Fall

There’s nothing like cozying up in front of a fireplace to take the crispness out of the fresh fall air. Installing a fireplace, such as the Brigantia model pictured here made by BC-based Archgard Industries, is an easy way to transform a space. “Add a touch of style and warmth to any room with this eloquent fireplace,” says Helen Peters of Classic Fireplaces, a company that has been warming Winnipeg homes for over 30 years. “It is 72 percent efficient on the P4 rating, and works well as a backup heat source in the event of a power outage.” The Brigantia fireplace is perfect for any dwelling (house, condo, cottage, office) because it has a very shallow profile and requires only 8” for depth. It is available in a vertical, rectangular and linear style in natural gas or propane, and can be installed anywhere as long as it is vented correctly and there is a natural gas or propane supply. “If you’re working with an outside wall, it is a space-saver,” notes Peters. “It is rear-vented, which is very clean on an outside wall. On an inside wall you’d need to allow additional space for a 90-degree elbow off the back of the unit to vent up and out.” Visit Class Fireplaces for more information about this and other products to warm your home!
