the agenda Welcome to Style Manitoba’s Fall 2020 edition! We are delighted to bring readers our latest issue, published in spite of the obstacles these uncertain times have brought into the ever-changing world facing us today. It’s been a challenging cycle for us, just as it has been for other publishers and for businesses in general. Reflecting on the last few months, however, one thing is certain - the importance of supporting both Canadian and local business. In fact, our economic future depends on it.

While Manitoba moves into the various stages of reopening the economy, businesses are facing a new reality as they work through the protocols of creating an environment that is safe for staff and customers alike. Whether it’s temporary or long lasting, embracing this new “normal” has been and will continue to be challenging for many companies as they reopen to the public. And the changes they are facing don’t simply stop at having safety measures in place. There’s also the task of bolstering consumer confidence, convincing people that it’s possible to safely venture out and explore the many products and services that Manitoba companies have to offer. That’s where Style Manitoba comes in. Our team is committed to working alongside local companies and organizations in the most effective ways possible as they reopen, assisting in the promotion of their goods and services in our publication and through our digital media feeds. We will be doing our utmost to encourage the public to come out and safely rediscover the best

Manitoba has to offer. In fact, we want success for local companies as much as they do. It is our belief that “we are in this together and together we are stronger.” In that spirit, we encourage Manitobans to stay the course. We’ve already proven our solidarity and resilience, as was evident when the virus first arrived. Continue doing your part - wear that mask and maintain proper social distancing protocols whenever and wherever needed. We will beat this thing eventually. Above all – stay hopeful and look towards a brighter future where COVID 19 no longer dictates our every move. Last but not least, a big shout-out to our healthcare professionals and frontline workers who are constantly at risk as they tend to our care and provide us with the essential goods and services we need to survive. Thanks for your courage and for making a difference as we navigate through these turbulent times.

Expansive windows, luxury vinyl plank flooring from Curtis Carpets and a Napoleon gas fireplace from Heat Savers Distributors bring out the warmth in the general living area.

Modern Twist on Classic Design S

BY LEA CURRIE PHOTOGRAPHY: MICHAEL ROBERTS

tyle’s feature home this issue seems to have all the typical elements that make up a gorgeous living space – a tranquil bathroom, bright, airy kitchen, efficient layout and lovely design touches. Yet, this house is anything but typical. In fact, when the word “typically” came up throughout the design process, it was promptly thrown out the window. By refusing to conform to what is standard, the builders created something far better.

4 | STYLE MANITOBA | AUTUMN 2020

The concept for this 1,680 square-foot, twobedroom, two-bathroom bungalow was to create an ode to mid-century modern design with Scandinavian and minimalist design elements. “Scandinavian design is primarily identified by functionality and minimalism. This was the main focus for us during the design process, as we really wanted to hone in on the functionality of the home while adhering to a

simple aesthetic. In the end, we incorporated some elements of tropical design like the pops of colour, greenery and tons of natural light that helped elevate our original Scandinavian focus. Bringing these two styles together just seemed so natural and created a modern twist on a classic design,” says Ryan Miller, project coordinator for Hearth Homes, the homebuilders of 40 West Plains in Sage Creek.

When layout was considered, the team considered what was typical – in a bungalow, the master bedroom is usually located at the back to take advantage of the backyard views. But the master bedroom is primarily used for sleeping, not enjoying the view, and people most often have their blinds closed for privacy. So the team opted to throw convention out the window and relocate the master bedroom. Instead, the main living area - including the living room, dining room and kitchen - runs along the back of the home. It provides an easy entertaining space and has the most optimal layout for windows, so the nice view can be enjoyed more often and by more people. Clerestory windows (a row of windows above eye level) are found throughout. The advantage of clerestory windows may seem obvious – more sunlight – but there is more to these windows. While light will naturally shine in, it results in more ambient light rather than the sometimes harsh light that can come at certain times of day from typically positioned windows. It also allows for artwork, shelving or just more open wall space at eye level. In rooms where windows are not as common, such as a kitchen, it can ensure the space is more open and doesn’t feel claustrophobic. “We added windows basically everywhere we could because we wanted to maximize the amount of natural light in the space. Clerestory windows are a great way to add natural light while still maintaining privacy,” says Miller. “The main feature of the kitchen really is the windows. There are clerestory windows above the cabinets as well as in the vaulted ceiling. It almost feels like there is no roof over the kitchen! It’s just so open and airy, it’s honestly one of our favourite kitchens ever.” The plethora of cabinets and counter space will make cooking look easy, no matter how badly you boil water. Indeed, any chef would covet the abundance of counter space, cabinets from EG

The clerestory windows and vaulted ceiling make the kitchen bright and airy, while any chef will covet the abundance of cabinets from EG Penner, and the double fridge and freezer from Midland Appliances. Penner and the doublewide fridge and freezer from Midland Appliances. The naturally stained maple used in the lower cabinets – paired with high gloss white thermofoil upper cabinets – is a signature material of Hearth Homes, and is used throughout the home. “All the woodwork, from the entertainment unit to the room divider to the kitchen cabinets, is natural maple. We love letting the wood speak for itself. There’s something so simple and inviting about naturally stained wood. When paired with white walls and white cabinets, it really shines a spotlight on the wood,” says Miller. Complementing the maple while adding continuity to the layout, luxury vinyl plank flooring in golden blonde oak from Curtis Carpets was used throughout the home. The colour palette was also carefully considered to further complement the maple. Sherwin Williams’ “Alabaster” was used for the main wall colour and trims, while earth tones were added with Sherwin Williams’ “Edgy Mustard” for the feature walls in the foyer and the master bedroom, and Sherwin Williams’ “Spicy Mustard” for the front door.

The simple front foyer with a dropped landing has a large closet with plenty of space for a family’s worth of jackets, footwear and bags.

To continue the mid-century design, Hearth Homes looked at adding simple but unique touches, such as the light fixtures from Robinson Lighting. “We went in with a vision of mid-century and we wanted to incorporate wood in the fixtures.

We found these amazing large-scale, wood-slat fixtures that throw a really interesting shadow pattern on the walls,” says Miller. The team at Hearth Homes love the fixtures so much, they are even planning to use them in a new showhome. AUTUMN 2020 | STYLE MANITOBA | 7

The master bedroom is serene and perfectly located in the bungalow for peace and privacy.

For added warmth, a 46-inch Napoleon gas fireplace from Heat Savers Distributers Ltd. is the perfect addition to the modern, clean living room.

dropped landing was incorporated to contain all the debris that comes in from outside, and a large double-door closet hides a family’s worth of jackets, shoes and bags.

The exquisite room divider between the living room and basement stairwell is one of the most popular features of the house. Hearth Homes’ designer, Brandi Soloway, worked with a Saskatoon-based company, Remnant Steel, to create computer-cut decorative metal screens with a geometric design. The screens are set within the natural maple shelving for a look that is both modern and retro.

“Entryways should be simple. You don’t want a lot of clutter that distracts from the architectural features of the home. We often design our layouts to have a clear direct sightline to the back of the home. This creates a sense of openness that makes the space feel larger and gives your guests a clear path to the rest of the home,” says Miller.

One of the other areas where typical was ignored was the ensuite. When creating a bathroom-turned-sanctuary, it’s common to put in either a luxurious soaker tub or an expansive walk-in shower, but Hearth Homes did both.

Outside, the mid-century elements welcome you home and set the stage for what is found inside.

“The exterior of the house is where your design story begins so it was important for us to incorporate mid-century elements like elongated angled rooflines, rake head (angled) windows, and cedar-tone siding. All of these elements cost a bit more money, but it’s all about choosing the right things to spend the money on that will help tell your design story,” says Miller. From the layout to the windows and the little touches in between, this home is anything but typical. The team at Hearth Homes refused to conform to traditional standards, and as a result, have created a home that is exceptionally atypical and every bit extraordinary.

“We expanded the square footage of the ensuite beyond what we would typically use. This allowed us to play with the layout a bit more, placing the soaker tub right at the heart of the room,” says Miller. “From there we thought about the function of the space and futureproofing. We used a textured tile that won’t get slippery when wet and the heated floors keep the space warm. We also created a zerothreshold shower with a seat that allows for universal accessibility.” Built-in nooks for bath products along with his-and-her sinks and sophisticated wood-inset mirrors from Fort Rouge Glass further upgrade the spa-like setting. For those who want and need practical touches, the entryway is simple but well thought out. A

The zero-threshold shower with bench seating and a textured tile that doesn’t get slippery when wet keeps the space practical for a family’s needs now and into the future.

About the Builder Hearth Homes has been building homes – and its family – for over 35 years. The custom homebuilders treat each client like family. The company strives for the best client experience each and every time, choosing to only build a select number of houses each year to maintain dedicated, personalized service and open communication and transparency throughout the process. “We know how to build homes. We can do it in our sleep! It’s our dedication to our clients and the client experience that we focus on day in and day out. Every day we are learning, adapting and perfecting our processes to make sure we are providing the highest degree of care for our clients. Maintaining an experience that is transparent and honest is what builds trust and is the reason why the majority of our builds are through word-of-mouth,” says Ryan Miller, project coordinator with Hearth Homes. The company keeps that family mentality long after the build is complete. Hearth Homes is part of the new home warranty program, which covers clients from defects in the structure, materials or workmanship. Hearth Homes even goes above and beyond, helping clients with any defects or issues, whether their home was built in 2019 or 1995. “Once you build with Hearth, you’re part of the family,” says Miller. www.hearth-homes.com Instagram: @hearthhomesbuilder

One-stop mortgage shopping

M

anitobans looking for a new residential mortgage, a renewal or a revenue property financing solution are often mired in banking bureaucracy, rate comparisons and contract features. Adrian Schulz wants to help. Schulz is a mortgage broker with Centum Financial Services, a company that takes a lot of the challenges out of the borrowing process. Schulz and Centum shop more than 40 financial institutions to deliver the best rate and feature package. “And, we do it for no charge to the homebuyer. We are paid by the lender but we work for the borrower,” says Schulz, noting that the majority of homebuyers simply take the best offer from the financial institution they deal with most often. “We can do better. We can be more competitive on rates because we have a larger range of options. I can also advise on terms that make sense for everyone, from first time homebuyers to professionals and the selfemployed.” At Centum Financial they don’t sell bank accounts, credit cards, or investments. They

specialize in comprehensive mortgage solutions. Schulz suggests that powering their success is a business model where he and his team develop long-term financial relationships with clients. “It’s important to understand individuals and their unique financial needs. Will you be moving? Is there a baby coming? Is your practice expanding? These are some of the questions that help us determine the best solution for a mortgage. Rates are key, but so too are the terms. We understand the lenders’ policies. For example, moving your mortgage or adding to it may incur a penalty, but when we can lower rates with another lender porting your loan can be a positive financial move. If a job transfer is possible, we can also advise against using institutions where mortgages are not as easily taken over to other provinces,” he says, remarking that a mortgage broker also knows how to advise and structure the debt service to limit risk exposure. Adrian Schulz brings a lot to a meeting when people are looking for financing options. He has 15 years of experience in the real estate industry and is a member of Mortgage Professionals Canada, an Associate of the Canadian Condominium Institute, and serves as a Director at the Manitoba Real Estate Association as well as the International Real Estate Federation (FIABCI). “Mortgage brokers are skilled to present mortgage applications where and how they will get the most immediate, positive result. We can save

NEED A MORTGAGE?

time and increase success. It also prevents people from scenarios where shopping for rates themselves can harm credit scores,” he notes. “You don’t call an insurance company for insurance - you use an insurance broker, because of their expertise, product knowledge and rates. It’s the same reason people should call a mortgage broker first,” he concludes, advising consumers to do their homework on mortgages and then let a broker do the heavy lifting to look out for their best interest. Specializing in custom countertops, tile installation, and more!

My wife and I loved the home featured as your cover story in Style’s Spring 2020 issue! We really liked the sleek contemporary design and how the light toned oak hardwood flooring added a nice injection of warmth into the overall space. The back-to-back vanities in the ensuite are also gorgeous, including the way the mirrors are cleverly hung on either side of the glass divider between the vanities. Huntington Homes gets top marks for creativity on this build. Jason & Sarah Welby, Winnipeg My husband and I particularly enjoyed getting Style Manitoba this spring. Being stuck at home when COVID 19 struck and during the subsequent lockdown, we actually had time to read it from cover to cover. I’m sure that many readers would agree with me that having a physical magazine in hand is so much more enjoyable than reading online, especially earlier in the year when so many people were hunkered down at home. Your spring issue was great! I found several columns and sections were especially useful to me, like the Clever Cleaning Hacks column (great tips), and of course, the recipe section. In fact, with all that time on our hands, we tried every recipe featured. We’re very much looking forward to getting the next edition of Style Manitoba.

Road Trip to Rush Bay The Electric Experiment B Y T R E V O R N O T T | P H O T O G R A P H Y: B E C K Y F L E U R Y

I

t’s been a few years since I wrote a car review based on the two-hour journey from Winnipeg East on the Trans-Canada to Rush Bay Road into Clytie Bay on beautiful Shoal Lake, Ontario. In the heart of the lush, yet rugged Canadian Shield, the final 20 minutes of the trip is on a scenic, winding rollercoaster of a road. This track provides the perfect testing ground for all types of driving.

For this trip, I tested a fully electric 2015 Tesla Model S 85D AWD sedan. Testing a four-yearold Tesla is a great way to see how it holds up and if the new price tag is worth it, or if it’s best to buy one that’s a few years old. One cautionary note about fully electric vehicles is you cannot drive them across country. Truth is, you will need to plan out charging destinations for long rural tours - expect to stop every 3 or 4 hours. The Rush Bay trip

is a 200 km / 2 hour journey each way. The entire round trip is possible without a charge if you drive the speed limit in ideal conditions. However, considering this 2015 85D Model S has a capacity of 427 kms, I thought why not relieve some range anxiety and charge it at some point along the way? Tesla has installed 98 Superchargers in Canada so you can now travel coast to coast within our country, and the US has 10 times that amount. There are thousands of other chargers on the Tesla map that are less powerful (a 3 hour wait instead of 30 minutes). There is a bank of 8 Tesla Superchargers in Prawda, MB, conveniently situated at the halfway point between Winnipeg and Kenora. I chose to avoid delaying my trip to the lake, opting to utilize the Supercharger upon my return to Winnipeg. They are very convenient - you just back up to the charger and plug in. There’s a nice little restaurant located there, where you can go in for an ice cream, as I did with my kids. Fifteen minutes and a few hundred bonus calories later, I went from approximately 200 km to approximately 350 km, calming my fears about the remaining battery range. The entire stop didn’t take much longer than if I had lined up to pump gas into a combustion engine and then waited in line to pay for the fuel.

14 | STYLE MANITOBA | AUTUMN 2020

Some Tesla models, like the one I tested, qualify for free lifetime charging depending on what model and when it was purchased. For other models and timelines, the cost is approximately .40 cents per minute of supercharging, so around $16 to fully charge from zero to 400 kms. Alternatively you can plug in your Tesla anywhere to a regular 110 plug but it is a very slow charge. Most Tesla owners opt for a 220 Volt home charger. Overnight charging will have you at full capacity to start your day - much like most people are in the habit of doing with their cell phones.

I have been heavily involved with Tesla Motors since they became mainstream back in 2013, and I’m still first-love giddy and childlike enthusiastic for the overall experience of these cars. If you decide to step up to the Ludicrous Performance models offering 0-100 kms in 2.3 seconds, beware! You may find yourself needing a neck brace afterwards, as one of my elder clients required. (No joke!)

AS TESTED: Model S 85D AWD dual motor Price - New $120k Used $64k

ON TO THE EXPERIENCE OF THE DRIVE ITSELF:

372 HP 440 torque

The Tesla I drove is a 2015 Model S 85D. However, with Tesla, they do regular updates and all the tech and abilities are very current to new models, aside from smaller differences such as some extra camera hardware.

NOTT’S HOT BUTTONS

I was able to set the self-driving autopilot for most of the ride and was able to decompress as it sensed and adjusted to varying speeds of traffic for me. The car’s massive 17” interface controls all the awesome technical comforts and personalization that you could imagine. The car comes with its own 3G internet, custom settings, flight plan, live streaming apps, and don’t get me started on the kids favourite - the fart seat app!

NOTT’S COLD BUTTONS

If you haven’t driven a Tesla before, your first reaction to the mind-blowing no delay, gutslapping launch is best to try without the kids present! The final 20 minutes of beautiful but twisting track of a road was delicately manoeuvred from corner to corner. There is NO delay; unlike combustion engines, the never-ending torque is always (safely) there, regardless of your speed. The ease of acceleration and handling of the Tesla is unlike anything us mere mortals have ever experienced.

Battery Range 427 kms

Speed, over the air software updates keep your technology current, reliability and five star safety rating, green sustainability

Styling is understated for an electric space shuttle, pricing is not for the masses. Must plan for long trips.

SUMMARY: For more than 100 years, conventional car companies have been making four wheel cars and later adding technology to the car. Tesla is foremost technology that has later added four wheels. The much heralded auto industry has never seen such a disruption from oil burning cars to the undeniable sustainable energy that Tesla has now made not only an aspirational purchase, but also a very smart one in my humble Manitoba opinion. #WhyNott visit www.nott.ca or at 1322 Waverley St for more info?

Stepping Out with Style By Quentin Mills-Fenn

MUSIC It’s an extraordinary time. The news seems to change daily, with the situation changing all the time. It’s a time to reflect about each other, and what’s important, and what makes a community. And although the world seems different right now, people still want to go out, to see and hear and experience new things and old favourites. Remember to check details before you head out. New events are always being announced, so be on the lookout. And don’t forget to check safety protocols at event venues. The Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra has announced their 2020/21 Recomposed Season. Because of current travel complications and restrictions, the WSO is rescheduling out-of-province soloists to their 2021/22 season, and taking this opportunity to spotlight the orchestra and its musicians, as well as tapping our community’s musicians as guest artists. More details on the “recomposed” season are forthcoming, but here’s what we know so far: The Asper (A)bsolute Classics Series features an evening of music by Beethoven and Bach featuring Gwen Hoebig, violin; and Daniel Raiskin, conductor (Oct 2 & 3). The next month showcases Violins of Hope, with Sonia Shklarov, violin; and Daniel Raiskin, conducting (Nov 27 & 28). The (B)eyond Classics Series presents music by Rota, Tse, and Bizet with Steven Dyer, trombone; and Julian Pellicano, conducting (Oct 30 & 31). Julian Pellicano is also the conductor of the POPs series. Concerts include Made in Manitoba with performers Don Amero, Kelly Bado, Erin Propp, and Larry Roy (Oct 16 & 17). Then the orchestra lays down some BrassRoots in a concert featuring the WSO brass (Nov 14 & 15). The WSO will be releasing information on the BMO Night at the Movies series and the Winnipeg New Music Festival sometime later, but the 20/21 Kids Concerts series, Handel’s Messiah and Bach’s Christmas Oratorio are cancelled. All WSO concerts take place at the Centennial Concert Hall. More home-grown talent is on display thanks to the Manitoba Chamber Orchestra. As a 18 | STYLE MANITOBA | AUTUMN 2020

The Asper (A)bsolute Classics Series features an evening of music by Beethoven and Bach featuring Gwen Hoebig, violin; and Daniel Raiskin, conductor. Photo: Sean Philips preview for their April-June series, they’ve put together a Chamber Night featuring some of Winnipeg’s best musicians, including Caitlin Broms-Jacobs, Allen Harrington, Victoria Sparks, Karl Stobbe, and Tracy Wright. (Oct 4 - Note that this concert is at the Winnipeg Art Gallery’s Eckhardt Hall.) Planning continues for Virtuosi Concerts 30th Anniversary Season. Things kick off with piano trios of Epic Proportions featuring the Montrose Trio (Dvorak’s Trio in E minor “Dumky” and Schubert’s Trio in E-flat major; Sept 21). Next, it’s Classical Sax with Jonathan Hulting-Cohen, saxophone; and Nadine Shank, piano, with music by Ibert, Poulenc, Harbison, Piazzola, Baljinder Singh Sekohn, and more (Oct 19). November brings the Virtuosi Young Artist Concert, featuring four selected young artists from years past and present. The four Virtuosi Young Artists - Thomas Ingram, clarinet; David Liam Roberts, cello; Sawyer Craig, soprano; and Albert Chen, piano - will present a concert they can call their own. (Nov 3). Later in the same month, it’s meagan&amy, with Meagan Milatz, piano; and Amy Hillis, violin, in an evening of music by Gershwin/ Heifetz, Prokofiev: Cinq, Mozart, Debussy, Messiaen, Fauré, and more (Nov 23).

interviews, live-stream and video concerts, master classes, and discussions. They’re also in the process of digitizing 30 years of new music events in their extensive video and audio archive, so there’s going to be lots to appeal to lovers of innovation and surprise. For their season premiere, the Winnipeg Jazz Orchestra welcomes trombonist Jenny Kellogg playing In a Mellow Tone, featuring the music of Duke Ellington (Oct 25, Winnipeg Art Gallery). The next month, it’s Basie Straight Ahead. Conductor and trumpeter Derrick Gardner spent some time in Basie’s trumpet section, and he’s in charge, so get ready for a concert steeped in blues and straight-ahead swing. (Nov 15, Seven Oaks Performing Arts Centre) The Izzy Asper Jazz Performances unveils its 22nd season featuring Latin grooves, contemporary explorations, and swinging standards. Jazz legend Art Blakey said, “Jazz washes away the dust of everyday life,” so it’s a perfect time for a centennial celebration of the drummer and visionary. With a sextet led by saxophonist Bobby Watson, with Brian Lynch, Bill Pierce, Essiet Essiet, Zaccai Curtis, and Carl Allen, it’ll be a fitting tribute to Art Blakely and the Jazz Messengers (Sept 12 & 13). Then, before we have to worry about winter, it’s time for Jane Bunnett and Maqueue. Bunnett has a long history of performing and teaching in Cuba, and Maqueque, her all-woman Afro-Cuban band, is a high-energy ensemble with infectious rhythms, mesmerizing vocals, and super-charged improvising (Oct 24, including a matinee. All concerts at Rady Jewish Community Centre, 123 Doncaster St)

Manitoba Opera has had to cancel their presentation of Sweeney Todd that had been scheduled for November, but they’ve gotten creative with substitute programming as it presents The Sopranos of Winnipeg. Internationally acclaimed sopranos Tracy Dahl, Lara Ciekiewicz, and Monica Huisman, to name a few, along with members of the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, will be performing a selection of works in a 75-minute, live-streamed event from the Centennial Concert Hall (Nov 7).

DANCE

GroundSwell is also going online this season with their Linked series. Details still need to be worked out, but be on the lookout for curator

The Royal Winnipeg Ballet had to cancel its fall production of Alice in Wonderland, but if you need a ballet fix, consider their Adult

Dance Classes, with instruction in all levels in ballet, jazz, lyrical, tap, modern, hip-hop, and musical theatre. Meanwhile, Winnipeg Contemporary Dancers’ cancelled spring production, VITALITY and the speed of life, will be programmed in their 2020-2021 season. Keep on the lookout for more about the WCD’s 56th season.

GALLERIES & MUSEUMS The Winnipeg Art Gallery is open, with exhibits and some family fun. While you’re there, take the elevator to the Penthouse Level and head for the Rooftop Sculpture Garden. Besides a selection of 20th and 21st century bronze, steel, and stone sculptures by Inuit, Canadian, and European artists, you’ll find a space for inspiration, contemplation, and relaxation. And with favourites games like croquet, lawn darts, beanbag toss, and more, there’s something for the whole family. In October, it’s time for the WAG’s fundraising gala, featuring a splendid dinner in the galleries with flowers inspired by the artwork on display, and an auction of unique experiences and the latest work by some of today’s leading local and national artists. Stay tuned for more details. (Oct 17) Speaking of the WAG, don’t forget to keep Nuit Blanche Winnipeg in mind. The WAG is a hub of activity during Nuit Blanche with after-hours access to the galleries, a cash bar, music, and more, but there are events all over town, all night long. (Sept 26) Cre8ery Gallery and Studio is an independently owned, commercial gallery and family business on the 2nd floor at 125 Adelaide St. Magpie Beauty, by Patrick Treacy, is an exhibition that runs from Sept 17-29. The Manitoba Museum is open, with limited hours as of this writing (afternoons, Thursday to Friday). The Museum Galleries are open, but all high touch/interactive displays are temporarily unavailable and the Nonsuch ship cannot be boarded at this time. The Science Gallery, Planetarium, and Museum Shop are temporarily closed to limit contact. Tucked away downtown, Dalnavert Museum is a small Victorian mansion that transports you back in time to the 19th century the second you step inside. (Open by appointment, 12:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. Wednesday to Sunday, 61 Carlton St) Likewise, Urban Shaman Contemporary Aboriginal Art is adapting to these times. A nationally recognized leader in Aboriginal arts programming and one of the foremost venues and voices for Aboriginal art in Canada, gallery hours and occupancy are limited. Open afternoons, Tuesday to Friday, but subject to change on demand from the public. (290 McDermot Ave)

Canadian Museum of Human Rights is also open (10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Tuesday to Saturday; closed on Sundays and Mondays). While most exhibits are open, some features – including touch screens in galleries – are closed. Timed ticketing is being used to manage the number of visitors at any one time. Buy your tickets in advance online for one of three entry timeslots during the day. Walk-up tickets are also available on a limited basis. Extend your Summer Staycation by exploring old St. Boniface. Housed in the former convent of the Grey Nuns, the St. Boniface Museum lays claim as Winnipeg’s oldest building and is the largest remaining traditional oak log structure in North America. Built by nuns from 1846 to 1851, the Museum boasts an impressive collection of artifacts representing the life and culture of Manitoba’s francophone and Métis communities, and includes a special exhibit on Louis Riel. The museum is currently open for walk-up visits although guided tours are not available at this time. Usual admission fees are currently suspended, but pay-as-youwish contributions would certainly be appreciated (494 Taché Ave) Next door is the St. Boniface CathedralBasilica, one of the city’s most striking landmarks, built inside the ruins of the oldest basilica in Western Canada. Walk the grounds and stop by the tomb of Louis Riel.

THEATRE The Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre and Prairie Theatre Exchange have both moved their 2020/2021 seasons to the winter of 2021. As well, Theatre Projects Manitoba and Celebrations Dinner Theatre have suspended their productions for the time being. Meanwhile, Manitoba Theatre for Young People has rejigged its season. Spelling 2-5-5 has been carried over from May 2020 and now runs Oct 30-Nov 8. For ages 5-12, this fast-paced, funny, and informative play by Jennifer Overton is the story of two brothers who share a room, a love of comic books, and a rather strict daily routine. Jake is on the autism spectrum; his older brother Simon has to adhere to a routine to help Jake get through the day. When a televised spelling bee contest is announced, Simon sees an opportunity to shine. Soon though, it is discovered that Jake is a great speller in a unique way and Simon must decide what’s really important to him.

AND MORE MUSIC There isn’t much in the way of big rock concerts in our near future, but there’s still live music to be found in smaller venues. Shows are always being added, but here are few for you to consider. Four-time JUNO Award nominee and platinum-selling CCMA Award winner Tim Hicks brings his Wreck This Town World Tour to Winnipeg (Sept 18, Club Regent Event Centre, 1425 Regent Ave West). There’s more country courtesy of all-vocal ensemble Home

Free who have made their mark on the music scene (350,000 albums sold, more than 100 million career audio streams). That’s Sept 19 at the Burton Cummings Theatre. The Park Theatre’s 15th Year Anniversary Party features JP Hoe and the Truly Richards, Sept 19 at the Park Theatre, 698 Osborne St. The Winnipeg Folk Festival had to cancel this year, of course, but they are presenting some out-of-season concerts at various venues. Bobby Bazini, singer/songwriter influenced by Johnny Cash and Bob Dylan, as well as Otis Redding and Ray Charles, plays at the Park Theatre on Oct 12. Passenger, aka Mike Rosenberg, multi-award winning, platinum-selling, singer-songwriter from Brighton, England, arrives at the Burton Cummings Theatre on Nov 8. There’s a new date for the Joel Plasket show: he’s now playing at the Park Theatre on Nov 16. Basia Bulat’s show was also rescheduled to Nov 18, at the West End Cultural Centre (586 Ellice Ave). Local faves Apollo Suns play their first ever show at Times Change(d) High & Lonesome Club, 234 Main St on Nov 6. April Wine plays the Club Regent Event Centre in a rescheduled show on Nov 12. (Humming “You Could Have Been a Lady” right now!)

MORE TO DO & SEE There are community-based events, like the 13th Annual Wolseley’s Envision Festival of the Arts, a free gathering to celebrate the local talent in Wolseley and West Broadway, with visual and performing artists, artisans, and local food treats (Oct 16 & 17, Robert A. Steen Community Centre, 980 Palmerston Ave). Want to enjoy local craft beer and spirits, international wine, and delicious bites, all for a great cause? Check out Raise A Glass Cozy Cabin Style, and help in the effort to make Cystic Fibrosis history (Oct 9 at Fort Gibraltar, 866 Rue Saint Joseph). If you need a laugh, Park Theatre presents God is a Scottish Drag Queen - The Pandemic Edition. Winnipeg Fringe star Mike Delamont returns to the Park Theatre with an all-new show. God, dressed in a floral powersuit, comes down to skewer everything COVID related from hording toilet paper to hand sanitizer (Oct 23, two shows, limited seating). And those frenemies Kenny Vs Spenny (Kenny Hotz & Spencer Rice) come to Winnipeg in a cringe-filled car crash of a comedy show (Rescheduled to Nov 6, at the Garrick, 330 Garry St). Check out some events and support the people who make our city such a great place to live. And remember - always stay safe while you’re enjoying yourself.

Is It Safe To Hire a Cleaning Service During COVID-19? Complete Lockdown Vs A Heightened Effort to Sanitize Your Home It’s natural to want to lock everything down during this crisis. When conducted safely, housecleaning services actually improve the health of your home and workplace. So much so that the government deemed cleaning services essential to the population, with the following safety precautions in place: social distancing, washing hands for a specific length of time, wearing a mask and gloves, disinfecting the soles of shoes or wearing shoe covers while using EPA approved cleaning products and methods. As consumers, we find ourselves in a dilemma: should we maximize our safety measures by preventing anyone other than our immediate family from entering our home? Or should we enhance our cleanliness by hiring a professional cleaner to clean and sanitize our home with diligence? You Make the Rules - your home, your rules, more safety efforts. Allow ventilation, wear your own protective equipment, instruct family members to social distance while the cleaner is working, or stay on a level other than the one the cleaner is working on. Hiring a Cleaning Service During Covid-19 is more important than ever because: 1. Safety: Cleaning professionals have been trained to follow all safety protocols while effectively eliminating germs/viruses with EPA approved cleaning solutions. 2. Peace of Mind: With everything you are required to do like homeschooling and working from home, a professional cleaner will give you peace of mind, knowing that the task is now taken care of.

Award-Winning Dentures & Implants “I had been wearing dentures for 30 years and had always some degree of discomfort with them. I am very pleased with my implants. I am able to enjoy food now that I couldn’t before. I have more confidence in myself and can smile more freely. I couldn’t do this before because my dentures felt loose and sloppy. I am very impressed with Brock’s thoroughness and attention to detail. Also, I am pleased with how personal Brock and his staff are. I never felt like I was just another patient. I would recommend Brock to anybody looking for a good Denturist. Thank you to the staff at Vandor Denture Clinic.” Cathy M

Smile Consultants V

andor Denture Centre is changing the way people think about dentures and implants. “We offer creative solutions to keep people smiling,” says Denturist Brock Vandor. Brock and wife Elisha operate the clinics on Regent Ave. in Winnipeg and on Eaton St. in Selkirk, where they have become the go-to denturist for the Interlake region. At Vandor Denture Centre, their patients are guided with a calm professional approach that is similar to buying glasses or fine jewelry. Consultations are targeted toward finding solutions and creating just the right look within a patient’s price point. “There is a lot to consider, but first it’s all about the patient and how we can maximize the overall experience,” says Brock, pointing to display cases offering examples of the most recent denture and implant innovations. “We know that foremost it’s about having teeth that look good and feel good. At the clinic, we blend this desire with the latest science behind dentures and implants to create a solution that has our patients feeling themselves again,” he says. Brock mentions Sylvia (pictured above) a recent patient who, after the first day with new implants, was able to eat corn on the cob, a food she thought she would never eat again.

Perhaps a partial denture is a solution. Let us show how these are firm and solid with no slippage, and how they can improve total mouth comfort and appearance. “We do it all here. Many procedures are done in front of the patient, so we can fine-tune dentures to make the fit perfect,” he says, adding that implants are performed off-site by oral surgeons who work in concert with Brock and his team. Following in his family’s footsteps, Brock took over the practice from his father in 2010 and has been at the forefront of the latest in new techniques and products ever since. “I love being a Denturist. For me, this work offers the ability to create something unique everyday. I enjoy the process of making things and I love problem solving. For me, being a Denturist is a vocation that brings everything together in one package,” he says, inviting people to visit www.vandordenturecentre.com to see how easy a great smile can be.

Services include complete and partial dentures, implants, implant supported dentures, relines and repairs, as well as Snap-On Smile® and Dentures in a Day. Vandor’s staff members even make home visits. Prices are surprisingly modest. For example, a set of basic upper and lower dentures starts around $2800. Other denture varieties that feature implanted posts for a secure fit are more costly, but still well within an average budget. “Seeing the difference in the quality of life a good set of dentures or implants can achieve is certainly one of the things that make this business so worthwhile,” says Brock, noting that not having a good working set of ‘chompers’ can impact nutrition, self-confidence, and cause pain. “People often feel they are not candidates for dentures or implants. We can show how they are affordable, reliable, and the solutions are flexible.

Achieve Your Aesthetic Goals BY LEA CURRIE | PHOTOGRAPHY: MICHAEL ROBERTS

H

ow old do you feel? Do you feel younger than your age? When you tell someone how old you are, are you as surprised as they are? As the Canadian lifespan increases – in just four decades, life expectancy has gone up from 75 years in 1980 to 82 years today – it is common for people to be seeing more and more birthdays, but not feeling like they’re so-called “that old.” Sometimes the way we feel is not exactly the way we look and we want our outward appearance to match the way we feel inside. “Every patient has their own reasons for seeking medical treatments such as injectables. Maybe it is a new mom looking to restore a well-rested appearance or a retiree who wants to regain a youthful look, not to necessarily ‘change’ their appearance but to have their appearance match how they feel,” says Heather Russell, clinic administrator with Winnipeg’s Sterling Cosmetics. “I am nearing 50 years old, but I don’t feel that way. Personally, I decided to have treatments because what my appearance was saying and who I am didn’t equate.” Sterling Cosmetics is a specialized injectable clinic. Located on Lorimer Boulevard, the skilled team focuses on anti-wrinkle and volume restoration to help patients keep their natural and youthful beauty with the appropriate products and safe practices. While people are inspired to get injectables for a variety of reasons, it’s often about more

than just changing their appearance – it can positively impact a person’s self-esteem and their outlook on life. Injectables are now one of the most common cosmetic procedures done in Canada, as more people have begun to see the value in investing in themselves. Uplifting and empowering clients is just what Sterling Cosmetics strives to do for each patient. “Our focus is to provide each patient with the best options to reach their aesthetic goals by ensuring they have appropriate medical procedures provided by well-trained, caring professionals,” says Russell. While treating fine lines and wrinkles is the common reason that people consider when they think of injectables, treatment plans can also be created for softening undereye areas, lifting cheekbones, enhancing lips and adding youthful volume. To ease any fears or doubts, each Sterling Cosmetics client gets dedicated time with both the nurse injector and surgeon, Dr. Richard Gall. Consultations are completely complimentary and this time is yours to discuss areas of concern and treatment goals. Together, an individualized treatment plan is prepared to achieve those results. “We want patients to be well educated and prepared for treatments,” says Russell. “We want patients to feel comfortable to ask any questions they have regarding treatments. We will ensure that we have discussed how to

best prepare for treatments and what to expect afterwards.” Follow-up treatments are also tailored to the individual. Typically, to maintain optimum results, anti-wrinkle treatment patients should return after three to four months, and up to a year or more for dermal fillers. A recent client had nothing but good things to say about Sterling Cosmetics: “Sterling Cosmetics is in a class of their own. Top notch service, great people with artisan skills, using needles as their paintbrush. I highly recommend them, you will love your results,“ she says. “This patient had the experience that we want for each patient,” says Russell. Sterling Cosmetics strives for that each and every day, and clients are seeing the difference it makes. “I had consults with other clinics, but Sterling Cosmetics wants to keep me natural. I was sold because of the nurturing energy and everyone is incredibly genuine,” raves another patient. The world of injectables can seem daunting. There are many different types, and what is best for you and your needs is not always what is going to be right for your friend, just like the reasons why you want to get it done are different than anyone else’s. The staff at Sterling Cosmetics will see you, inside and out, and help to make sure the two match. AUTUMN 2020 | STYLE MANITOBA | 31

Beauty Meets Function By Lea Currie

W

ith the right touch and blend of materials, any outdoor space can be made beautiful, but first and foremost, it must be usable. Whether it’s a simple backyard or a rooftop atrium, if the space is not user-friendly, it’s not going to be appreciated or enjoyed, and isn’t that why we have green spaces? “We always start with the use case or programmatic function of how each space is used. We then start to snowball ideas with the clients based on previous work to see what aesthetic features they like, and then start designing from there,” says Nick Harasym, co-owner of Neil & Nick’s Landscaping. “The final product is always beautiful and the clients are very impressed, but it is more important to us to make sure their new landscaping enhances how they interact and use the space.”

OUTDOOR LIVING and upkeep. Paving stones produce amazing outdoor seating areas to savour the natural surroundings. “The geometries of the hardscape areas are designed with rock/mulch beds and sodded areas to provide a beautiful and usable exterior space. Trees, shrubs, perennials and grasses are also strategically placed to accommodate sight lines, shade and overall function of each space,” says Harasym. The landscapers recommend a blend of coniferous and deciduous trees to provide both year-round privacy and the splendour of blossoming trees each spring. For those who are willing to take the plunge (with some upkeep), gorgeous water features can be crafted, like the cascading waterfall and pond (pictured here) on a client’s rooftop atrium in their penthouse. The custom multitiered pergola made with pedra hardwood and artificial turf make the space yard-like and offer a touch of green without the need for a lawnmower on the top floor.

regards to design. We feel that if you are hiring a professional contractor to design your landscaping, you want something that is different but functional at the same time. We like to focus on transition areas where ground cover changes into hardscaping/patio areas. Instead of a straight or curved edge on a patio, it is always nice to integrate steeping slabs from the rock bed into the patio or strategically place a boulder that is custom cut into the edge of the patio or stack stone wall,” says Harasym, who has a Bachelor of Environmental Design and Master of Architecture. “We are your one-stop shop to do it once and do it right,” says Harasym. “Most clients cannot believe what is possible with some design and construction expertise. There really isn’t anything that is difficult with enough experience we find. We are constantly striving to design and build the most beautiful and exciting landscapes that will inspire others to see what is possible.” Learn more at: www.neilandnicks.com

“We like to always push the boundaries as far as our clients’ comfort levels allow us to go in

The exterior contracting company, which executes both design and construction, start each job with one simple question: “Contemporary or classic?” “Contemporary is very modern looking with straight geometries for patios, rock beds and planting arrangements. Classic is more like a golf course with traditional gentle rolling berms/contour changes and curved patios and rock beds,” says Harasym, who runs the company with business partner, Neil Boorsma. The client’s choice between the two is coupled with the desired use, and ideas run from there. The end result is as different as each home. Some spaces use gently rolling grading/berms that transition into a stone retention wall to add character to a flat piece of land. For those who want minimal maintenance, rock beds with well-spaced plants offer a carefree look AUTUMN 2020 | STYLE MANITOBA | 35

t. Mary’s Academy has already created a long-lasting legacy in its 150 years of educating young women in Winnipeg, but to commemorate its 150th anniversary, it wanted to leave a different kind of gift to future generations. The Legacy Rose Garden, created by Bedrock Landscaping, will be cherished by students and faculty now and for 150 years to come. The outdoor space beautifully complements the historical school building with a winding walkway made with Roman paving stones. Two sitting areas created with Mesa flagstone – highly durable concrete pavers that have the look of natural flagstone – have retaining walls and park benches to provide ample space to enjoy a moment between

classes, have lunch, work on projects or even hold outdoor classes. “The ultimate goal was to create a design and space by using materials that were a reflection of one of Winnipeg’s most prominent historic buildings. The Roman pavers and limestone Tyndall stone boulders helped capture that,” says Jason Woznesensky, designer with Bedrock Landscaping, part of the Garcea Group. The focal point of the space though will be the 150 red and white roses that, when in bloom, will bring colour and vibrancy to the area. Some Prairie grasses were also imbedded in a fragrant pine bark mulch to provide more greenery and tie in Manitoba’s natural landscape.

Planting a Legacy

“When I designed this for the school, I took into account the historical nature of the surrounding environment as well as working with a budget that St. Mary’s has worked so hard to attain in order for this project to move forward,” says Woznesensky. “I made sure that this was not only something new to an area that is so old, but something that will be used and loved by everyone for the next 150 years!” Bedrock Landscaping puts a lot of planning into executing the perfect residential yard or commercial project, and Woznesensky emphasizes that taking time to work with the client is a must to ensure the final product is unique to their wants and needs. OUTDOOR LIVING Backyard Makeover This shaded Crescentwood backyard once showed its age, but with a complete makeover, it’s now a fresh, contemporary entertaining space that complements its modern home. “The existing yard was overgrown and had a wooded feel with quite a few mature shade trees and a lot of scrubby undergrowth,” says Paul Szakacs of 3 Seasons Landscaping. “The yard was stripped back to make space for an open lawn area and the patio pictured, and the mature trees were kept for privacy, comfort and ambiance. Perimeter planting beds were installed around the mature trees and mass planted with flowering shrubs and perennials to create waves of colour and texture, visual interest, and a more contemporary feel to the space.”

The multiple applications and clean lines of the Travertine tile used for the patio, step stones and bed edging brings a sophisticated, cohesive feel. Its fair colour offers a striking balance against the lawn and wood mulch. Breaks between the elements create impact while the perennials add dimension.

An important factor when designing the space was circulation. “There are two entrances to the backyard – one on each side of the house – and two sets of stairs from the large deck out to the yard. Locating the patio and walkways so that flow is maintained throughout the yard

was a key component of the design,” says Szakacs. 3 Seasons, with decades of experience and a talented, dedicated team, was able to transform this once overgrown backyard into a functional retreat. Learn more at: www.3seasons.ca

PERFECT SETTING, SAFE AT HOME

M

anitobans looking to take the edge off a troubled world have been turning to home-nesting solutions such a Glastar Sunroom by SunShade.

“With factors such as COVID-19 impacting our society, many people are thinking of staying closer to home rather than take distant vacations. Folks are also socializing with smaller groups and a sunroom offers the perfect setting for get-togethers,” says SunShade president Steve Sarens, who remarks that their Glastar product is a full three-season sunroom that has been the company’s flagship item since they started in the 1960s. Today, SunShade has earned a considerable reputation as the local industry leader, thanks to high-quality design, workmanship, and an uncompromising approach to detail and customer satisfaction. Indeed, Sarens reports that their number one source of new business is customer referrals. At SunShade it all starts with the designer. “Our designers can discuss pros and cons, and our mission is to create a functional room at a reasonable cost. Our processes are among the very best; we offer baked-on finishes and can match trim colours to existing fascia and eaves to create a seamless look even on older residences,” he says, commenting that adjacent decks and landscaping features are all taken into account to create a total package.

Part of what makes SunShade the Manitoba leader in sunrooms is that they don’t use off-the-shelf components and their products aren’t just shoehorned onto a design. “Our in-house designers work with customers to achieve the very best plan upfront. Then, we custom make every sunroom at our Winnipeg factory to specifications unique to each home. Our highly experienced crews (SunShade has four dedicated construction teams) have the skill sets to install the sunroom to the exact specifications of the design and meet all building codes. We stand behind everything we do, and if there is an issue, it’s dealt with quickly and with an eye to customer satisfaction,” he notes, pointing out that thanks to their unique floatation system, SunShade is the only sunroom manufacturer in North America that can obtain permits to build sunrooms on unpiled decks. According to Sarens, business is brisk at the Winnipeg showroom and manufacturing facility. “April was slow given the pandemic, but then as people began to consider how they would be able to socialize with friends and family and how travel would remain difficult, we started to see sales climb. This July saw us having our strongest sales period in more than 40 years. People are interested in how a three-season sunroom can make some of those nasty winter months more

bearable and we show them how a sunroom adds value to homes.” For those whose property does not allow for a traditional sunroom addition, SunShade has just introduced a standalone unit that offers all the benefits of their standard (or custom) products without being attached to the house. This sunroom offers 108 square feet (9’X12’) of interior space and no building permit is required. Need a shed that really stands up? SunShade has introduced the Atlas All-Purpose Structure. Like the standalone sunroom, Atlas requires no permitting and comes with features such as an 8-foot or 13-foot door. “This makes moving and storing plywood or drywall much easier. The higher height also means upper-level storage is possible. The units are ideal for quads and other toys, and also make great ‘man caves’ or ‘she sheds.’ “These units come in three standard sizes (custom sizes available on request) and are over spec’d to go well beyond code. In fact, the structure is so strong, the roof can be used as a deck,” states Sarens. Want to find out more? Navigating the New Normal HOT HOME SALES Winnipeg’s real estate market is a good gauge of the City’s state of affairs. When COVID-19 first became top of everyone’s mind back in March, April and May, property markets tumbled. Sales were brutal over those three months. April saw sales decline by 35.3% over last year, and May was down by 21.7%. Then came the summer and despite the gloom of a pandemic, Winnipeggers turned up the heat on realtors, making this period the busiest in more than 40 years. June sales climbed by over 21% and July was up by more than 30%. “Back in March, like many other Manitobans, we were very uncertain how COVID-19 would affect the market,” says broker Realtor® Connie Levesque of Property Exchange Group. “But after a few weeks, our phones started to ring again. Sellers and buyers have been reaching out to us for lifestyle changes. Some people are looking for more land to grow their food, others for local vacation properties, and some clients for larger homes to enjoy the space or simply to be closer to family. We have had great interest rates and many of our firsttime buyers have also been taking advantage of that opportunity.” COVID came to town just as our winter was winding down. As the numbers of active cases grew, business was whipsawed. Retailers closed, entertainment venues shuttered, and the travel and hospitality sectors sputtered to a halt. People stayed home and cocooned to wait out the challenge. Business did not have to wait long before indications of an upswing were in the spring air. Grocery started reporting hefty Q2 sales figures. Then hardware and lumber dealers joined with their own announcements, as did bike shops and Realtors®. Renovation contractors, landscapers, and pool service companies joined the group as Canadians and Manitobans decided to spend money on their homes and lifestyle as we muscled our way through the pandemic. According to the Winnipeg Chamber of Commerce, agriculture, manufacturing, transportation, and construction sectors all enjoyed considerable growth during the pandemic. The Chamber reports some companies in these sectors have reported gains upwards of 50% year to date.

40 | STYLE MANITOBA | AUTUMN 2020

According to Levesque, realtors took up the challenge of COVID-19. “We have taken steps to better accommodate both staff and clients through the buying/selling process,” she says, mentioning that this could include wearing masks when staff and clients are unable to maintain the recommended physical distance, regular use of hand sanitizer, and prepping a home before a showing by sanitizing surfaces and turning on lights and opening doors in advance to minimize contact. “Despite the unprecedented circumstances and the challenges that COVID-19 presents, I am very happy to report that our industry is doing well,” says Levesque. Homebuilders also report strong demand as they get ready to showcase their wares at the Fall Parade of Homes. And, while the Spring Parade was concluded early due to the pandemic, the fall event is planned to go ahead full steam. Behind this edition of the Parade is a strong focus on health and safety, with showhomes following a strict protocol. Parade of Homes Chairperson Jason Jaquet, VicePresident for Randall Homes, states that this year will be different for the Parade in so many ways due to COVID-19.

“Despite the challenges, we still see strong demand for new homes and the Parade is certainly one of the best ways to compare new home designs and discover the latest in technology,” he says.

BIG SPEND ON HOME PRODUCTS The desire to cocoon during challenging times is a perfect fit for the home design and renovation sector. People simply want their homes to be fortresses of comfort in these unprecedented times. According to Steve Sarens, president of SunShade, a local leader in sunroom products, business is currently brisk at the Winnipeg showroom and manufacturing facility. However, like Levesque, Sarens saw COVID-19 impact sales at the front end of the pandemic. “April was slow given the pandemic, but then as people began to consider how they would be able to socialize with friends and family and how travel would remain difficult, we started to see sales climb. This July saw us having our strongest sales period in more than 40 years. People are interested in how a three-season sunroom can make some of those nasty winter months more bearable. We show them how a sunroom adds value to homes,” he says, noting that with factors such as COVID-19 impacting society, many people are thinking of staying closer to home rather than taking distant vacations. “Folks are also socializing with smaller groups. A sunroom offers the perfect setting for gettogethers,” he says. With more people now working on a remote basis, there has been a major uptick in lumber sales as people build new home offices and improve home spaces. This demand, caused by the strong US and Canadian housing market, as well as an increased push for home renovations, has driven up prices for Canadian lumber to record levels. Homeowners and builders were also hard hit by a decrease in lumber production over March and April due to COVID-19. Prices in August for pine, fir and spruce dimensional lumber stood at (US) $762 per thousand board feet. This price is up from the old record of (US)$650 per thousand board feet that had stood since 2018. Speaking to homeowners, we have heard of challenges finding enough lumber at local Home Depots and Rona outlets just to build

a new fence. Those building new homes are in a tougher situation and many are in waiting mode, hoping that prices will come down after January, a period when lumber prices are at their lowest. While the industry suggests homebuilders are seeing a climb in lumber prices between $8000 and $10,000 per unit, some are seeing spikes much higher with figures of $20,000 not uncommon among new home buyers that are waiting to get into the ground. While lumber sales have been skyrocketing, other sectors within the new home reno market are also enjoying sales increases. Simon Simkin of Superlite, a major Winnipeg-based retailer of lighting products, reports that they remain cautiously optimistic about the current business situation. “We had to close for four weeks when COVID19 hit back in March, and as a result, sales were off,” he says, commenting that increased demand in June and through the summer is helping them maintain a steady sales picture year over year.

How can Manitobans offer their support to business and navigate ‘the new normal’? “Start by just wearing a mask when you drop in to buy a lottery ticket, groceries or a new set of tires,” says public health worker Julie Trudesco. “Having the mask on shows respect for the workers and it helps decrease person-to-person

transmission of the disease when you are in groups. If you have symptoms like a cough, temperature or nauseated tummy, tell someone like Manitoba Health and take steps to limit exposure to others. We are all in this together. The only way we can beat the pandemic is through cooperation.”

“We have been able to call our employees back and are seeing a 4% to 10% increase, but this is just letting us hold the line. There is new home construction occurring and the reno market is very strong. There were some challenges with the supply chain as we moved into the summer, but manufacturers are working out the kinks so we can get products to customers when they need them,” he says. At Interior Illusions, a premier design and furnishing retailer in the Exchange District, business is moving forward. Here, principal Magda Zelickson suggests this is a good time to consider your interior space. “People are not travelling like they once did and are investing in their homes. Where once people said, ‘someday we will do this,’ they are finding that someday is now,” she notes. “With the masks and social distancing impacting behaviour, people are finding that this is a good time to slow down and appreciate home life. We are seeing a demand for products and design for home offices. We have sourced more and are stocking more to meet the demand,” says Magda, mentioning multi-use furnishings that can work in more than one way to make them perfect for both kitchen and home office applications. “People are being very mindful about purchases and they are asking more often for Canadian made goods. We are happy to oblige. Having Canadian-made products is one way we can offer support in this challenging time,” she says.

ith the booming DIY market for home renovations due to COVID-19 and their existing clientele of homebuilders, the pace at Fort Rouge Glass (FRG) has not slowed down. The team at FRG saw an opportunity to help others continue to work safely during the pandemic by introducing safety shields. This was something they already made but when demand increased, they perfected the products to work for any situation. Operations manager, Vince Croker, spearheaded the project and has had a lot of fun with it.

Shielded From Harm BY LEA CURRIE | PHOTOGRAPHY: MICHAEL ROBERTS

Monica White, business development and sales manager for FRG, talks about how the shields can help businesses stay open and keep people healthy. How has Fort Rouge Glass responded to the COVID-19 pandemic? “We recognized that the world is changing and people have serious concerns about their safety. So to help address some of those concerns, we created protective shields. These shields can be used anywhere that you have person-to-person contact and provide another layer of protection for staff and customers.”

GREEK MARKET

Can you tell me about the different types of shields available?

tubing with polycarbonate and has a passthrough slot on the front.”

“There are three different shields: Easy Shield, Perma Shield and Full Comfort Shield. The Easy Shield is made of 6-millimetre polycarbonate, which is resistant to chemicals and has a high impact resistance. This stand-alone shield can be set up in just minutes on a desk or counter and has a pass-through for easy exchanges.

Where can these shields be installed?

The Perma Shield is more permanent. It’s made with 10-millimetre glass that is held by stainless steel posts. It can be anchored directly to a desk or counter, and also has a pass-through. The main benefit of glass (versus polycarbonate or acrylic) is its less porous surface, which makes it easier to disinfect and keep clean. Glass is also more resistant to scratching and will stay clear and not discolour. The Perma Shield can stand up in the long run and won’t look like a quick fix. The third option is the Full Comfort Shield. This is a three-sided shield that offers the most protection. It’s constructed with stainless steel

“With three different shields available, we have the right product to suit any setting. We’ve installed shields in restaurants, grocery stores, commissionaires’ offices, bakeries, doctors’ offices, Winnipeg police stations, mini golf centres, accounting firms, schools, universities, car dealerships… you name a place and we can do it!” Which is better for protection – glass or polycarbonate? “There is no protective difference. It is more aesthetic. Polycarbonate is a strong plastic and can be shaped easily. The downfall is that it can turn yellow over time from sunlight and discolour from cleaning solution. Glass is a clean, clear and strong material. We also used tempered glass, or safety glass, which means it will not shatter but will break into thousands of small pieces.”

stop the spread of germs. They can all be sanitized and kept clean. The more protection we can offer to people right now, the better.” How do FRG’s shields compare to similar products on the market? “We have been around for 50 years and we have built a reputation for trust and quality service. The team at Fort Rouge Glass has always believed that “quality is job one” and we stand behind that in everything we do, and we stand behind our products, including the shields. Plus, our shields can be completely customized for various needs and we also have a stock of standard sizing if you need one installed quickly.” Fort Rouge Glass is doing their part to keep people across Manitoba healthy, and with a shield, any business can do the same.

Can the shields be customized? “Yes, each of them can be completely customized for any situation. The stands can be made any height and width to fit the space and needs perfectly. We can add holes and pass-throughs to ensure business transactions can be made easily without hindering protection.” Why should a business use a safety shield compared to masks or other sanitization efforts?

anitobans know a good thing when they see it. This has certainly been the case with the Parade of Homes, a bi-annual event organized by the Manitoba Home Builders’ Association that has become the leading showcase for the talents of the province’s considerable new home sector. Today, Manitoba’s Parade of Homes is Canada’s longest-running and largest event of its kind. “This is our 40th anniversary of the Fall Parade of Homes, and even with the challenges facing our community from COVID-19, the event is on track to be among the best,” says Manitoba Homes Builders’ Association President and CEO Lanny McInnes, who reports that the event will highlight over 110 sites and 27 builders from September 12 to October 10. Locations include properties in Winnipeg, beyond the perimeter and as far west as Brandon. “This is a unique opportunity to get out and see all the options available in the widest groupings of neighbourhoods. And the event is truly Manitoban. There are sites in Brandon as well as other locations outside Winnipeg, like West St Paul, La Salle and St. Adolphe,” he says, noting that thousands of new home buyers take the opportunity to view displays. “The profile of this event truly shows off Manitoba’s new home builder community like nothing else.” And while the Spring Parade of Homes was concluded early due to the pandemic, the fall event is planned to go ahead full steam. Behind this edition of the Parade is a full-court press on health and safety with showhomes following a strict protocol. According to McInnes, properties will be fully sanitized and traffic will be limited to one party per visit. “This means there could be small waits while people go through showhomes, but with public health on everyone’s mind, builders are being very careful and conforming to set safety criteria that include standard questions about your wellbeing before entry,” he explains. According to Parade of Homes Chairperson Jason Jaquet, Vice-President Randall Homes, this year will be different for the Parade in so many ways due to COVID-19. “Despite the challenges, we are still seeing strong demand for new homes and the Parade is certainly one of the best ways to compare new home designs and discover the latest in technology.”

to exciting kitchen plans and landscaping features, Manitoba homebuilders show that they are at the top of their game. Good cases in point are A&S homes and Randall Homes. A&S Homes will feature a property at 12 Merkel Manza Blvd in Canterbury Crossing. The property is a 1958 square foot contemporary two-storey with 2.5 baths and three bedrooms. According to on-site marketer Jennifer Kalupar, this Manitoba Home Builders Association Award winning property features 18-foot foyer ceilings, a glass insert staircase with maple railings, and laminate flooring throughout. “This is an open-concept layout with a formal dining area and a spacious great room with a custom maple entertainment centre. It is well designed to meet current demands,” she says, noting that the home comes with a full Smart Home package where technology takes care of details such as home comfort settings, lighting and security. Kalupar has been selling The Parade of Homes properties for several years and regards the event as the best opportunity for new home buyers to really see it all. “Not only can you compare models, but you can see the quality of the construction and visualize design elements with an eye to how the home will fit family needs. The Parade is where builders can put their best foot forward,” she says. Jason Jaquet agrees. He mentions that Randall Homes is delivering Parade excitement at locations such as 322 Tanager Trail in Sage Creek. This new design called the Douglas is an 1808-square foot, two-storey with an open great room concept, and features three bedrooms, 2 ½ bathrooms and a main floor office. The property is marketed by Paul Michael Saltel. He comments that the Douglas design offers a wide-open, bright and airy interior that is expansive. “The home features the Randall enhanced exterior elevation, and large windows on the rear wall let in tons of sunlight from the south, while a smart layout uses all the available space extremely well,” he says, noting that the home is nicely designed with features such as a kitchen island, mezzanine level laundry, and a well-appointed master suite with two walk-in closets. Community at Heart B Y K E L LY G R A Y

he communities of Bridgwater are inclusive and multifaceted with properties that offer a full range of residential options, from luxury detached single-family homes to more affordable multi-family townhomes, apartments and condominiums. From the outset, Bridgwater has been planned as a residential community with appeal to a wide demographic range. Helping to achieve this goal is Devereaux Developments, a Reginabased Canadian leader in multi-family design and development. “We look for well-planned neighbourhoods when we seek out new areas for development. Bridgwater fit the bill,” says Devereaux Group of Companies president and co-founder Denis Jones. “We look for diversity and ask ‘Can people grow in this community?’ We saw that Bridgwater was well laid out with high-quality housing products. We also saw that there were very few rental or affordable properties available so we approached the developer, Manitoba Housing, in 2015,” he says, mentioning that the company was already in the Winnipeg market in 2014 with a 400-unit rental project in the Seasons neighbourhood off Sterling Lyon Parkway. Today, Devereaux Developments is present in Bridgwater Trails. Currently open are The Pinnacle I and II at Bridgwater (Bridgwater Trails) with other properties coming soon to Appleford Gate and Bison Drive. The Pinnacle I and II at Bridgwater on Bridge Lake Drive offer 176 and 208 units

respectively, with 1 bedroom, 1 bathroom + den, and 2 bedroom, 2 bathroom + den suites. Inside, residents enjoy spacious floor plans and contemporary design, with luxury vinyl plank flooring, quartz countertops, stainless steel appliances, high gloss cabinetry, double kitchen sinks, full-size washers and dryers, private balconies, ensuite bathrooms and walk-in closets. The property also offers a host of amenities such as an outdoor swimming pool and residents’ clubhouse with fitness centre, lounge and games room. There is also an off-leash dog run, outdoor fire pits and common area BBQs to complete the package.

affordable. With this program the units are typically $300 to $400 below market and tenants must meet an income threshold to qualify. “We see this program as a bridge that helps people until such time as they can manage a full-sized rent package,” says Jones, concluding that Devereaux Developments, like the neighbourhoods of Bridgwater, have something for everyone. “We build more than apartments. Our goal is to build communities.”

“We saw a demand for larger family units and we have taken this on with the newest development off Bison Drive,” says Jones. This four-storey apartment complex that features underground parking will also team with six stacked townhomes offering 88 units. The site has just broken ground and expects its first residents in mid-2021. Suites will be available in 1 to 3 bedroom configurations with footprints coming in between 600 and 1000 square feet. Features include luxury vinyl plank flooring, quartz counters and stainless steel appliances. Like the Pinnacle, the Applegate property will include a clubhouse, pool and balconies, as well as a BBQ area. Behind the success of these apartment residences is a commitment to community. The “Wow” Factor

Neighbourhoods

You know you’ve got a hit when people walk into a home and immediately say “wow!” “When they come in, everybody says ‘It’s bigger than you think.’ The house has nice high, 10-foot ceilings on the main floor and 19-foot ceilings in the great room,” says Jerzy Piotrowicz, realtor with Century 21 Carrie Realty. “You get the wow effect when you first walk in, it’s so high; it’s unusually higher than most houses.” The 1,955-square-foot, two-storey home at 245 Willow Creek Road in Winnipeg’s Bridgewater Trails is a new showhome from custom builders Gino’s Homes. Along with the high ceilings, the open design and well-planned layout help make this home stand out. The wow factor continues as meticulous care was taken to add extraordinary elements in every room. The three bedrooms all boast walk-in closets, with the master featuring his-and-her walk-ins along with an ensuite. A charming mid-level loft is perfect for an office or reading area. Even the staircase has a wider than normal design. Upgrades are scattered throughout the kitchen and 2.5 bathrooms, from quartz countertops to Thermofoil cabinetry. The kitchen also has speakers in the ceiling and a filtration system added to the unique black double sink.

In the living room, a custom built-in entertainment unit, gorgeous fireplace and huge 19-foot wall feature would make anyone say “wow.”

Outside, the pie-shaped lot creates a large, beautifully landscaped backyard that would be perfect for a pool, says Piotrowicz, while the front overlooks a nice lake.

Prairie Pointe delivers

innipeg’s southern quadrant continues to offer impressive new home sales. In fact, southwest Winnipeg stands out as the leading choice among new home buyers with the most building permits granted for residential development. Prairie Pointe is a good example of a master-planned community that has captured the attention of house hunters. Development on the 2200-lot neighbourhood started in 2015 and has been moving ahead steadily, says David Borger, Vice-president of Development with Ladco, a well-known Winnipeg-based leader in new home communities and the company behind Prairie Pointe. “Already 600 lots have been sold and interest continues to be very strong,” he says, suggesting that Prairie Pointe is a community with a wealth of amenities. Amenities include green spaces such as parks and linear pathways along the beautiful lakes. Indeed, Ladco completed a new park off Eaglewood Drive just last year. The green space is a five-acre site that features a play structure as well as a picnic shelter and fire pit complete with seating. Shopping is easy with major retail sites and specialty stores within close proximity, and some of the province’s largest sports and recreation facilities, including the planned South Winnipeg Recreation Campus, are within easy bicycling range. According to Borger, they are moving into Stage 4 of the development. Services and infrastructure were completed in 2019 on this portion,

and up to 300 lots are now going on the market. “We have already seen over 100 lots sold as we move into this fall’s Parade of Homes. We expect sales to be brisk as people come to investigate the community and discover all the attributes to living in Prairie Pointe,” says Borger, noting that they have partnered with the best of the best among Manitoba’s new home builders. These include names such as A&S, Discovery, Hilton, KDR, Randall, Signature, Ventura, as well as Broadview and Sterling Homes. Here, Jason Jaquet of Randall Homes suggests that location and affordability are behind the popularity of the community. “People want to locate in the south and Prairie Pointe helps make this happen with an affordable portfolio of residential properties and a location that ticks all the boxes. Prairie Point is close to sites such as the University of Manitoba, Victoria General Hospital and St. Vital Centre, as well as all the great shopping along Kenaston Boulevard. For those with cottages, Prairie Point offers a quick getaway, thanks to its location near the Perimeter Highway and its connectivity,” states Jaquet.

a well-designed master bedroom with ensuite. The kitchen features a spacious eating area and walk-in pantry. The design is highly flexible with ample room for amenity add-ons. “Prairie Pointe has something for everyone,” concludes David Borger. “This is an inclusive community where a full range of demographics from families to empty nesters to multi-generation households can find a solution to their new home needs. While there are lots of singlefamily detached homes, there are also duplexes, townhomes and condos that serve to add to the overall affordability of this highly desirable neighbourhood.” Discover the excitement of southern living by visiting www.ladco.mb.ca or stop by the showhomes located on Highpark Drive during The Parade of Homes (September 12-October 10).

Properties for this fall’s Parade of Homes are located on Highpark Drive. For example, Randall Homes will be showcasing an attractive residence at 23 Highpark Drive. The property, called The Jackson, is a 1731-square foot, three-bedroom that is marketed by Glenda Bumenglag. She reports that The Jackson features affordable innovation with an open concept floor plan, a two-storey great room, and AUTUMN 2020 | STYLE MANITOBA | 51

Let There Be Light Chances are, you take lighting for granted. You go into a room and flick the light switch without a second thought. It surrounds you everywhere you go. But lighting does so much more than just light up a space. It can set the mood, create an experience, add visual interest and evoke our personal style. “Lighting is important for the obvious reasons of function – enough light to cook, read or groom, but also to help achieve a desired ambiance in a space, by either lighting areas selectively, such as intimately lighting a dining table without “flood lighting” the entire space or by adding light to specific areas such as under-cabinet lighting or in-cabinet lighting,” says Simon Simkin, president of Super-Lite Lighting. In this gorgeous living space in H. Albers Builders’ showhome in Sage Creek, selecting the illumination source was thoughtfully done by Super-Lite. “The vision of this open concept space was to keep everything bright and airy, without any

visual obstructions to block sightlines. These fixtures achieve that aim by providing bright, even illumination and are in keeping with the contemporary feel of the space,” says Simkin of the flat-panel, recessed LED fixtures from Dals Lighting, a Canadian manufacturer.

Super-Lite Lighting has been in business for over 70 years and their experienced staff and large showroom make picking the best fixture for you and your space an easy, comfortable decision. Visit Manitoba’s largest lighting showroom at 1040 Waverley Street in Winnipeg.

uilders are going with the flow in Taylor Farm, where riverfront lots will soon be making a splash with happy homeowners.

Nestled in the Rural Municipality of Headingley, Taylor Farm offers breathtaking views of the Assiniboine River, combined with the easy access of a country location that is mere minutes from the city. Offering a glimpse at what life might be like on a large river lot, Irwin Homes will soon begin construction on its first Taylor Farm showhome at 52 Curry Drive. “In partnership with Qualico Communities, we’re building the first Taylor Farm showhome on the Assiniboine River,” says Irwin Homes’ president Andrew Koop. “What’s got me excited is that partnering with Qualico means it’s going to be a well thoughtout and managed development, which is really important.” Koop says nothing compares to the tranquil view of nature when you build a home along the water. “It is spectacular on the Assiniboine River. You really have to stand there and look at the river lots to understand how absolutely stunning they are,” he says. “These lots are huge, so that also gives you so much flexibility to customize your home, which is really appealing.”

Tara Reid, Qualico Communities sales and development manager, notes that Phase 1 and 2 of Taylor Farm will feature 94 homes, while the overall master plan will include approximately 585 single-family homes. “The spacious lots in Taylor Farm allow builders and their clients more home design flexibility. The architectural controls within the community ensure that high standards of exterior design and materials are used, thus enhancing the natural beauty of the surrounding landscape,” Reid says. Available lots range from 72 to 98 feet wide, including interior lots, as well as some walkout lower level lots that back onto the trail and naturalized wetland or onto the Assiniboine River. The Irwin Homes showhome, set to open in 2021, will be a two-storey walkout that features floor-to-ceiling glass to enhance the spectacular view of the river.

butler’s pantry as well as optional laundry on the main floor. “To me, this is an executive home. We didn’t want it to get too massive, so this is a 2,700-square-foot contemporary plan,” Koop says. “We’re using every inch of this place for family.” So far, 45 homes are completely built or currently under construction in Taylor Farm, and more than 25 families have already moved to the budding community. “Residents of Taylor Farm will enjoy a network of trails and wetlands throughout the overall community, as well as a mature basswood forest next to the Assiniboine River,” says Reid. “Taylor Farm provides easy access to the amenities of Headingley and the west end of Winnipeg, all while offering the simple, quiet beauty of country living.”

The home will include three oversized bedrooms on the lower level plus the owner’s suite on the main floor, with the convenience of 4.5 bathrooms — including an ensuite with views that overlook the river from a freestanding tub. The second floor is dedicated to a loft entertainment area complete with a bar. Overlooking the great room, this impressive area can also be used as a guest space with its own private bathroom. Fine Art There are many mediums an artist can use. Some prefer pencil or paint while others use pictures or video. The team at Artista Homes choose to express creativity through houses and landscapes. “We wanted to make sure that the experience of this home begins from when you first set eyes on it. The landscaping had to match our vison,” says Frank Cotroneo, co-owner of Artista Homes, which created this grand property in Winnipeg’s affluent Tuxedo neighbourhood. “We wanted to show off different elements and give the home character.” The team used composite decking, granite boulders, LED lighting, staggered patio stone and spruce trees, among other materials, to create this dramatic yard.

Inside, this stunning showhome has a modern contemporary design. The nearly 4,500-squarefoot, open concept space has five bedrooms, 3.5 bathrooms and all the wonderful elements of today’s luxury homes. Features include a chef kitchen with custom cabinetry, a gym area, three-car tandem garage, and full automation throughout. The raised master bedroom with spa-like ensuite provides a beautiful private setting. Like any great artist, Artista Homes knows the advantages of working with light. Huge windows

Massive 14-foot ceilings on the main floor and 11-foot ceilings downstairs add to the large open feeling for a spectacular look. “We created multiple levels with tall ceilings and doorways to show the uniqueness throughout,” says Cotroneo. For Space Sake also features products for wall beds and sliding doors. And, much of what they have on offer is made in Canada. In fact, products are made right here in Manitoba at a shop in Morden.

“We’re passionate about bringing spaces to life. Making the most of small spaces requires innovative storage solutions. We pride ourselves in finding a way to maximize space without compromising style or function,” says Boiselle, mentioning that they offer a complimentary design service to bring a homeowner’s ideas to life.

DESIGN &DECOR A Rock Solid Look

Drama and durability come together in a stunning feature wall. Using Neolith, a breakthrough, high-tech, ultra-compact slab, Carrara Tile & Marble has created the look of a seamless marble fireplace, without the weight or price of natural stone marble slabs. The marble alternative has been around since 2009, but more recently has started to attract the eye of contractors, designers and homeowners for its extreme versatility. Neolith comes in the largest existing sintered stone surface on the market, and is lightweight and very thin (the panels here are only ¼ inch thick), making it easier to install. It’s also more durable than marble. The non-porous surface will not stain, is scratchproof, and heat and fire resistant. The eco-friendly stone is also 100 percent natural and recyclable. “The manufactured slabs have a digital image of real marble printed on them for an ultrarealistic looking pattern. It has unique warm and cool-toned veins on a white background for a nice balance,” says Carrara Tile & Marble sales manager, Matt Vaccaro, of the chosen colour, Neolith Calacatta Luxe. The product can also mimic wood, concrete, stone and more. With a spacious fireplace embedded in the wall, the final result is flawless. Carrara Tile & Marble is family-owned and operated for over 30 years, and is Manitoba’s only Neolith retailer. Learn more at: www.carraratile.ca

DESIGN &DECOR Aim For the Stars

When decorating, aspiring for that perfect look can seem like reaching for the stars, but the right light fixture brings a room together seamlessly. This Leonardelli chandelier was inspired by the stars with its celestial elegance. Over a hundred LEDs are arranged in fantastical geometric shapes on fine rods, giving the appearance of floating. Adding to the stargazing allure, light refracts differently when viewed from multiple angles. “Lighting can set the mood for a room, not just by the light it provides but by the actual style of fixture selected. You should consider design and function when selecting a fixture for your space,” says Adilia Silva, general manager for Total Lighting. The goal was to find a light source that was striking but not overpowering, and the Leonardelli was written in the stars for this space. It’s available in three sizes to bring a starburst of lighting to various areas. Total Lighting, located at 347 William Avenue, is where bright ideas begin. The company has been illuminating Winnipeg homes and businesses for 45 years. “Since its beginning in 1975, it’s safe to say the specialists at Total Lighting know a thing or two about all things luminescent,” says Silva. “If you’re looking for just the right light in just the right spot for just the right effect – you’ve come to the right place.”

The Fire Experts

Long before boosting the national economy was making headlines, Heat Savers Distributors Ltd. was proud to support fellow Canadian companies. “We only sell Canadian-made fireplaces,” says Jesse Gardiner, president and owner of Heat Savers. He commends the great products and brand recognition of many Canadian brands, including Napoleon. The 46-inch Napoleon Ascent gas fireplace shown here was the perfect fit for the clean, modern design of this showhome built by Hearth Homes. “The particular size and look of the Ascent 46 fit perfectly into the overall design. The Ascent 46 offers beautiful topaz Crystaline embers and porcelain interior fireback, which allows the flames to reflect and dance off the panels and give a deeper feel to the fireplace,” says Gardiner. “Heat Savers is the leading supplier of hearth products in Manitoba and Northwest Ontario. Our expertise on all things fire allows us to help our dealers, contractors and builders find the perfect product for the job.” The distributors have been supplying top-ofthe-line fireplaces, BBQs and HVAC products for over 30 years. As Manitoba’s only true hearth distributor, they do not have retail operations, but work closely with hearth dealers, contractors and builders to find the right products for their clients. For consumer enquiries, Heat Savers will happily recommend the right dealer or contractor for the job. AUTUMN 2020 | STYLE MANITOBA | 63

KITCHEN &BATH

A

s the home’s epicentre, it’s vital for the kitchen to set the right tone for the rest of the house. This stunning Dekton countertops’ marble look sets the perfect mood of contemporary sophistication and becomes the focal point for the heart of the home.

Installed by custom stone fabricator Ital-Stone Design, the countertops tie in the colour palette of this room beautifully, with its white background and bold grey vein carried horizontally across the kitchen through to the waterfall. Beyond the beauty, Dekton by manufacturer Cosentino, is a hardy material, more than capable of handling the everyday wear and tear of this well-loved kitchen. This material looks like marble, but does not have the negative characteristics that marble carries. It is a matte surface, which allows for extreme durability. It is heat, stain, etch and scratch resistant, offering a great surface for a busy, high-traffic kitchen. Ital-Stone Design’s team put in a lot of time and effort before and during install to match up the bold veining of the material to create a flawless end product. The company specializes in horizontal and vertical hard-surface applications, using Dekton, quartz, granite, porcelain, marble, soapstone and quartzite.

Contemporary Sophistication

Beyond countertops, these materials can be utilized in various ways, including shower surrounds, fireplaces, flooring, backsplashes, cabinet cladding and even custom furniture and projects to bring clients’ ideas to life. Ital-Stone Design staff takes pride in the work and art that they create. The salespeople are with clients from start to finish to answer all questions and concerns, and this transparent sales experience has proven to be beneficial in meeting clients’ expectations. The passionate team works with state-of-the-art equipment and software, as well as three “shops on wheels” (fully enclosed cube vans) to deliver top-ofthe-line products and service. To maintain this high-quality service throughout, the company has a completely vertically integrated process under one ownership. This allows Ital-Stone Design to provide complete coordinated services from sales to engineering to manufacturing, and finally, to logistics and installation. Alongside the manufacturing facility, the company has a showroom and design centre regularly utilized by designers, architects, builders and contractors to select the right materials and colours.
