the agenda
Autumn is such a lovely season – a time to enjoy the crunch of fallen leaves underfoot and the cooler comfortable weather as the last traces of summer disappear. It’s also an exciting time for arts and cultural activities and other happenings in Manitoba as the new season rolls out for various organizations. Thankfully, many of us can now attend performances and events in person!
Speaking of which, the Fall Parade of Homes starts a month later than usual this year. On from Oct 16th to Nov 7th, consumers can visit 100 sites in the city and beyond to view the fabulous residential options available at showhomes constructed by 33 local builders and developers. Take the tour and discover the latest in new home design trends - you may find exactly what you’re looking for!
An exclusive custom-designed residence engineered and built for life on the prairies graces Style’s cover this edition. Check out A Work of Art to discover the degree of masterful craftsmanship required to accomplish this remarkable building feat.
On another note, Autumn 2021 marks a significant milestone for Style Manitoba, as we celebrate our Silver Anniversary. It’s incredible how quickly time has marched on! We’ve enjoyed a great run and are extremely grateful to our advertisers for their support, and to our loyal readers for following Style in print and online for the past 25 years.
Many thanks to Style’s team as well, including Paul Butters (Art Director), Lisa Lester (Marketing) and Joe Potenza (Digital Media), along with the talented writers and photographers (past and present) who have filled each issue with their contributions. A nod to those who are no longer with us – Eric Green (Marketing) retired in 2020; previous regular columnists Christine Hanlon, Deborah Bowers and Carly Peters; and former valued photographers Doug Dealey, John Johnston and Daniel Wexler. Thanks to all of you, Style Manitoba celebrates 25 successful years of publishing today.

Imagine being presented with a Rubik’s Cube, the 3-D combination puzzle invented in the 1970s by Hungarian sculptor and professor of architecture Ernő Rubik. But the puzzle isn’t yet physically made; it’s a blueprint on paper. Your job is to make this new invention come to life so that it will function as envisioned, perform with repeated use and last for a very long time.
Now take that Rubik’s Cube analogy and make the project bigger. Much, much bigger. And extremely complex. Then you might have an appreciation for the expertise required to build this 11,000-squarefoot residence on Henderson Highway near Lockport.
Completed in 2018, the luxury home was a collaboration between the homeowner, the B.C.-based BattersbyHowat Architects and their local project liaison Syverson Monteyne Architecture, and Winnipeg-based Harris Builders. Eton Harris, president of Harris Builders, says his company was selected as the consultant, manager
and builder on this challenging custom home build because of his team’s experience and understanding of the materials that would be required to withstand the harsh prairie climate. This expertise would be necessary due to the home’s sheer size and sleek West Coast modern design.
It’s an understatement to say that this is a solid home. In addition to its massive structural steel and timber frame, more than 800 cubic metres of concrete from Building Products & Concrete Supply and 200 foundation piles were used in its construction. It also boasts a fire suppression and lightning mitigation system. With a façade of metal, wood and concrete, this home is meant to stand the test of time.
“It was almost a commercial project in terms of our approach with the materials and systems we used,” says Tomek Jasiakiewicz, lead project manager. “We relied on Star Building Materials to supply most of our building materials and worked with many amazing trades to develop and build the structure.”

Incorporated into the staircase behind it, a cedar slat feature wall provides both a decorative and structural element in the space. Harris Builders’ masterful craftsmanship is as clear on the outside as it is on the inside. Temple Metal Roof’s installation of the flat roof tops a home that, with its façade of metal, wood and concrete, is meant to stand the test of time.

“All the tradespeople involved in this project were spectacular,” agrees Harris. “Their skills just shone and the craftsmanship is unbelievable.”
Everyone engaged in the build of this ambitious home rose to the challenge because they recognized that “there’s really nothing like it in Manitoba,” says Harris. “We consider all of our builds as works of art but we are extremely proud of this particular home, taking the vision of the architect and homeowner and making it a reality.”
The homeowner has a strong interest in art and wanted to showcase both her larger pieces as well as a collection of coloured glass vases. This personal vision for the home is reflected in its overall aesthetic, from the Frank Lloyd Wright-inspired “married to the ground” Prairie style architecture,
to the modern, art gallery feel of the interior.
Entering through the contemporary front pivot wood door into the home’s foyer is to be embraced by the homeowner’s fully expressed ethos. Heated ceramic tile floors ground the space, which is

This deck is part of a green roof featuring native plants grown specifically to weather the exposed site.
The sleek and sophisticated kitchen occupies its own projection off of the home. A bank of windows runs the entire length of the room, so that prepping meals and washing up is less like a chore and more like a dream. One of the most impressive aspects of this build was the massive staircase leading from the main living area to the second floor. The staircase consists of a structural steel assembly clad in wood substrate, with oak-trimmed stairs and painted metal panels. A walkout basement rounds out the balance of the home’s living space. “The elevations in this house are unbelievable,” says Harris, who estimates that there are about eight levels in the home. “It literally appears to rise out of the landscape. There would be very few homes that would rival its complexity.”
Jasiakiewicz agrees. “It’s a building that defies gravity.”
And it’s a remarkable home that defies expectations.

About the builder
It’s a story that begins in the 1950s, when the Harris family started to build their business reputation on a strong foundation - literally. Their industrial operations, which initially focused on pile foundations, eventually led to expertise in excavation, shoring, foundations and utilities.
In the last decade, their custom homebuilding and renovations services have grown steadily. With years of expertise under their tool belt, together with trusted and valued relationships with tradespeople and clients alike, Harris Builders is known as a respected, collaborative partner in luxury design home builds.
Working closely with architects and designers as project managers and consultants, the Harris Builders team can oversee all aspects of homebuilding, from foundation to roof and everything in between. That team includes in-house finish carpenters, exteriors crew, demolition crew, and other highly experienced tradespeople, supplemented by local external trades and suppliers.
Harris Builders is particularly skilled in managing extremely complex projects, such as the home profiled on these pages. They conduct their own detailed reviews of architectural and structural drawings, rendering the project with 3D modelling to ensure the home will look and function as envisioned by the architect and the client.
For every build, Harris Builders assigns a lead project manager and on-site supervisor. Along the way, Harris Builders employs value engineering to improve functionality, keeping costs low while increasing value. Clients are kept up to date monthly on the budget and guided throughout the entire process.
Harris Builders’ homes are built above code for efficiency, and they make a point of informing clients about options in new and innovative products and materials that can be incorporated into their custom build.
Expertise, together with trust from their community, is woven into the Harris Builders’ story. Let them help write your next chapter with a spectacular home that’s built to last.

Marking a Milestone
BY KELLY GRAY | PHOTOGRAPHY: BECKY FLEURY
Celebrating 15 years of innovative growth
Nott Auto Corp rose from humble beginnings. Indeed, Trevor Nott’s young family literally lived above the first dealership off Lagimodiere Blvd. with their new baby. This simple start in 2006 has since grown into one of Canada's most unique and groundbreaking car dealerships.
Car sales and service is what Nott Auto does, and they have earned their considerable reputation over the past 15 years as a leader in the luxury market. Located on 5 acres at the corner of McGillivray and Waverley in the city’s south-end, Nott’s awardwinning, 30- person business caters to all makes and models. They are experts in vehicle remarketing and consignment. But there is more.
“At Nott, the idea is to think like the customer,” says Nott Auto Corp president and founder Trevor Nott. “Why Nott is not just our ad slogan, it’s our business mantra as well. We empathize and entrench ourselves into the place of our customers. This philosophy helps us truly deliver what customers want. We know our success
comes from recognizing clients’ stresses and offering efficient, smart solutions. From our award-winning service, AutoSpa, consignment, lease and finance capabilities, our process is one where we build longterm trusting relationships and hold each customer’s hand when it comes to all things car-related.”
CARLAB CUSTOMIZATION
This fall, Nott will celebrate its 15th anniversary by launching its innovative customization shopWinnipeg CarLab. According to Trevor Nott, they had been working on a deal with West Coast Customs, a Burbank, California-based leader in vehicle alterations that has made a name for itself with a weekly television program, Pimp my Ride.
“But COVID-19 got in the way of development, so we pivoted with an inspired local solution,” he says. The Winnipeg CarLab offers massive digital printers and laminators that enable the facility to create highresolution custom vinyl graphics for everything from commercial cargo vans to compact Teslas.
“If you can imagine it, we can design it,” he says, mentioning that the CarLab will offer a digital rendering station where customers can easily view the finished vision (custom wheels, bumpers, etc.) before colour digital printers get to work on the design. Another benefit of the equipment is that it can create clear or duplicate vinyl finishes (second skin) that can be wrapped over existing OEM paint surfaces to make the car’s surface area more resilient to damage from things like stone chips and sunlight. “This unique process protects the resale value of a car as well without altering its colour, design, and beauty over the long term.”
According to Trevor Nott, the expectation is that aside from the retail public sector, many local businesses will be attracted to the opportunity to place advertising messaging over an entire vehicle body. “This kind of mobile advertising draws brand awareness for any type of local businesses such as real estate, trades, delivery vehicles touring city streets. Our large digital laminator

printers can handle large murals, storefronts or any type of vehicle. The service works for semi-trailers, boats and golf carts, as well as motorcycles or snow machines. We could even do airplanes,” he says with a laugh.
The new facility is also the place to discover exciting custom rims, bumpers, air suspensions, audio, and sport tuning performance products. “We understand the engineering that makes cars great. When making changes to original equipment, it's important to have professionally trained experts offering the best advice that covers not only what looks awesome, but also what products work well with the original design or performance of the car. Our Print Lab team, lead by Victor Dos Santos, and our Service Lab, led by Chris Nott, have the knowledge and the experience to steer customers in the right direction. Manitobans now have a great option to express their unique style beyond the manufacture assembly line.”
FACILITY UPGRADE
Nott Auto recently underwent a major renovation to upgrade most of the facility. This reno included
freshly paved asphalt and Power Smart lighting, as well as a state-ofthe-art all-new service repair facility that comes with a crew of Red Seal mechanics that can fix your VW Golf, as well as the full range of Tesla EVs and everything in between. Indeed, Nott has been the go-to location for Tesla sales and leasing as well as services for years. Now, with the 15th anniversary just around the corner, they are just putting the finishing touches on all new hoists and diagnostic equipment, as well as a drive-thru oil change fast lane.
Nott Auto has always been known for its innovative showroom. In fact, the newest upgrades on the 20,000 square foot art-filled interior space are sure to wow their guests. According to Trevor Nott, the lounge area will be expanded and will now feature a look that is more akin to a hotel or restaurant lounge. “Play a game of billiards, pinball, real basketball or relax in a massage chair while you wait for your detail, service or while you talk over a car purchase decision,” he suggests.
"One very unique addition is we repurposed the old Winnipeg
Convention Centre's huge backlit sign. It is freshly refurbished and installed in our new Lab custom install area, and will offer a cool historic Winnipeg backdrop for our 'before and after' car photo booth area,” he adds.
“From the beginning 15 years ago, we have operated authentically and intuitively from a position of ‘Why Nott?’ If it seems like a fun and unique idea for all parties, we try it. A typical franchise store is mandated and limited by the manufacturer’s direction that guides how they renovate, operate, market, and process potential clients. But we see the auto sector as an exciting, fun business. Our daily intentions are lead by what we KNOW ahead, what we THINK. Quite simply, most people - both our clients and our staff - value overall experience over products," says Nott, suggesting that their go-with-theflow unique approach has made them the growing success they are today.

Emerging Manitoba filmmaker Rowan Gray is going places, and she is taking her audience with her. Her film Tides has been winning awards and making it onto short-lists at international festivals such as the Dublin International Film Festival and California’s Sherman Oaks Film Festival where it won Best Short Film, Drama. This summer, Gray's film caught the attention of CBC producers who selected the work to be among nine national finalists in the network’s Short Film Face-Off competition.
Style Manitoba caught up to this busy filmmaker on the Winnipeg set of CBC’s The Porter.
Style Manitoba: Why did you make Tides?
Rowan Gray: This is my second short film. I wanted to make something that experimented with multiple perceptions/visual depictions of the same event. I wanted to use these internal perspectives to activate characters that are often depicted as being passive.
Style Manitoba: What does the film convey, and why is this important?
Rowan Gray: Tides is about a young woman who cares for her grandmother. The film depicts both the grandmother's point of view as she escapes from their rural Manitoban home and the granddaughter's perspective as she goes out searching for her. I was interested in the complex layers of being a caregiver, but also the
Focused on film
confining aspects of the one being cared for.
Style Manitoba: Were you able to find the talent and skillsets easily among Manitoba’s film community?
Rowan Gray: I work in the film industry in Manitoba. I was very fortunate to have my friends from set come on as crew for Tides. Casting took a bit longer, and I found three extremely talented women who had little or no experience working on a film set. We did lots of rehearsals, and working with them was one of my favourite parts of the project.
Style Manitoba: How did Manitoba’s environment contribute to the beauty of your work?
Rowan Gray: Taking full advantage of the visual contrast between a Manitoban winter and summer was central to the idea for this film and was the foundation for the different points of view.
Style Manitoba: What’s on the horizon in terms of projects?
Rowan Gray: I have two projects on the go at the moment. One is a short called Discordia, and I’m also working on a video installation called For Fear of Falling. I hope to have both done by next spring.
Style Manitoba: Making films is hard work. Why do you do it?
Rowan Gray: Making films can indeed be extremely difficult. This said, there is nothing else I would rather do.

The World in a Selfie (Verso Books)
by Marco D’Eramo
Tourism is one of the biggest industries in the world, and Marco D’Eramo has come up with an engaging excursion into the phenomenon. First published in Italian in 2017, this translation (by Bethan Bowett-Jones and David Broder) has updated material on the impact of Covid-19 on travel and tourism, as much of the world went on lockdown. It’s well-researched and thought-provoking, like when the author discusses the impact of UNESCO World Heritage designations on some of the most beautiful cities of the world: bakeries and hardware stores are driven out by cupcake restaurants for tourists, and the locals move out as their homes are bought up to be Airbnbs.
China in One Village (Verso Books)
by Liang Hong
Liang Hong returned to her family village for a lengthy visit for the first time in a decade to see for herself the changes taking place in rural China. The result is this book, a bestseller in China, now in English (translated by Emily Goedde). It’s a compelling mix of nostalgia and social commentary, but also small town gossip and long-held petty complaints. Liang Hong writes compassionately about husbands and wives who see each other once a year, children raised by aging grandparents, and listless teenagers with nothing to do but play video games or get into trouble.
White Lie (Anvil Press)
by Clint Burnham
Clint Burnham’s latest is a collection of very short stories, none more than a page: “photographs that developed over time,” he writes in one of them. Scattershot observations, fleeting moments, glimpses of characters who quickly pass out of frame: grandparents in Abbotsford and a café on the Bruce Peninsula, sorting the new technology and wondering what to do with an alcohol-free beer. Funny, sad, thoughtful, moving.

THELONIOUS MONK Palo Alto (Impulse!/unIversal)
Your high school hop would have swung much differently had Danny Scher been in charge of booking. In October 1968, the 16-year-old student at Palo Alto High School in California persuaded Thelonious Monk and band to play a show. Tapes of the gig, recorded by a school janitor, were unearthed only recently; although the fidelity isn’t always the highest, they’re a treasure. Monk’s angular but swinging piano and Charlie Rouse’s burly tenor saxophone need no introduction, and the setlist is familiar, but the verve is contagious – “Well You Needn’t” and “Blue Monk” could make statues dance, and Monk heard alone on the standard “Don’t Blame Me” sparkles with warmth and wit – and there are great surprises from the rhythm section of bassist Larry Gales (including a rare bowed solo) and drummer Ben Riley.
CASSANDRA WILSON
Five Original Albums (Blue note/unIversal)
With her sultry contralto embedded in small groups of mainly acoustic instruments, Cassandra Wilson caressed a warmly, invitingly personal sound that embraced wellknown songs by Van Morrison, Robert Johnson, The Band and more, and set them on even footing with her own subtle songwriting. It’s a twilight world, steeped in the home truths of rural blues and almost hymnal, but not averse to surprise; Blue Light ’Til Dawn was her first step away from her jazz career, but Travelling Miles saw her reclaim it handsomely via her distinctive tribute to Miles Davis. Three other sterling, seductive albums are boxed nicely here for about the price of one.
CAN Live in Stuttgart 1975 (mute)
Sometimes, you have to take the current when it comes. Can’s astounding improvisational skills, nurtured by camaraderie and deep listening, could bear wilder fruit on stage, where that communication expanded to interpret the mood of the audience in the hall and the hall itself. Keyboard player Irmin Schmidt has been exploring the band’s deep archives, seeking complete concerts that honour Can’s organic process. Live in Stuttgart 1975 is the first, and it’s stunning. The 20-minute opening track captures that spirit from the start, with Schmidt conjuring gaseous organ and guitarist Michael Karoli playing Arabic scales before the inimitable team of bass guitarist Holger Czukay and drummer Jaki Liebezeit take the improvisation further. Liebezeit is not only a tireless, flexible timekeeper but also a canny editor, punctuating as much as driving, while Czukay is prodding, even funky, while playing the minimum of notes.

Autumn Beauty Trends
BY AMY ATKINSON
This fall, beauty trends show a return to Classic Glamour with bold lips, breathable skin, and the newest look for eyes with what makeup artists are dubbing the “kitten eye.”
Once again, it’s time to take out your deeper rich lip colours, and invest in a thicker moisturizer to keep skin hydrated for the cooler months here in Manitoba. Night Haven by Monat is vegan and I like to wear it day and night. It locks in moisture, keeping the skin nourished with intense hydration.
I think almost everyone will want to play up their lips with bolder colour again, after spending a year largely not wearing any makeup. Bold red lips are in season; a long-wear, highshine lipstick such as Savage by Uoma Beauty will amplify anyone’s lips and is 100% vegan. (Purchased at Felicheeta Artistry at Winnipeg’s Grant Park Mall)
Breathable and lightweight products will be popular, especially when it comes to foundation, as we still want to correct and conceal. The idea of buildable coverage shouldn’t take away from your natural beauty. The only foundation I wear is by IT Cosmetics, The Color Correcting Illuminating Full Coverage Cream + Anti-Aging Hydrating Serum + SPF 50+ UVA/UVB Broad Spectrum Physical Sunscreen. This buildable foundation gives full coverage that looks like your skin but only better. Clinically shown to provide 179% improved skin
hydration, improved skin texture and enhance skin brightness, it’s suitable for all skin types and delivers 7 products all in one:
- Full-coverage foundation
- SPF 50+ UVA/UVB broad spectrum physical sunscreen
- Brightening colour corrector
- Anti-aging serum
- Pore-minimizing primer
- Dark spot corrector
- Moisturizing day cream
This foundation was created with Plastic Surgeons and is infused with one of the top skin care productsHyaluronic Acid - to help plump and hydrate the skin. The shade I wear is Neutral Medium, which can be purchased at Sephora or online.
Liner is back and subtler than ever in a look makeup artists are calling the “kitten eye” – an understated daintier version of the cat eye. Smaller lines are becoming a trend because they are easier to execute. The main difference is to start your liner in the center of the eye instead of tracing all the way from the inner corner. Then use short, thin strokes to draw along your lash line, giving it a tiny flick at the end for a subtle wing. Stila’s Liquid stayall-day liner in Jet Black is perfect to achieve this fall makeup trend.

Beauty institute offers best in cosmetology training
If there is anything Gen X, Gen Y and Gen Z have in common, it would be the quest for beauty. In an industry driven by image consciousness, anyone who has a passion for medical esthetics would do well to pursue a career in this growing industry. Just ask Jennifer Hofer.
After working in operations management in construction for years, then moving to teach business courses, Hofer fell into the beauty industry.
“My career in beauty evolved after a tanning bed was gifted by my mother,” she says. “I had skin care and makeup training but I wanted to get more,” she adds.
A decision to take some programs at Eternal Beauty Institute Head Office in Calgary kick-started a passion that has taken her from skincare technician to franchise owner in a very short period of time.
“It all happened very quickly,” Hofer states. Following her training, she along with her partner Barbara McBean (founder of Eternal Beauty Institute in Calgary) found a location for the business she wanted to opena 4400 sq. ft. building at 1379 Portage Avenue. That was in December 2018.
“My husband and I worked 12-16 hours a day renovating the building and March 4, 2019, we had our first certification class,” she says. The grand opening was March 15th of that year.
Quest for Beauty
BY DONNA MINKUS PHOTOGRAPHY: MICHAEL ROBERTS
Today Hofer is the franchise owner of the Eternal Beauty Institute & Medispa in Winnipeg, which offers cosmetology studies in cutting-edge curriculum with more than 70 programs focusing on medical esthetics and also offering a comprehensive basic esthetician’s component.
In medical esthetics, students are taught the techniques they will need to have a successful career in today’s world of beauty. Courses include training in Botox and Filler injectables, laser treatments, advanced skincare such as chemical peels and micro needling, as well as brows and lashes, and so much more. A short-term certification program in esthetics offers a bundling option allowing students to select from a wide range of courses in medical esthetics.
A boutique style school, classes are small - with no more than 10 students in the full time and up to 6 in the certificate program. “Our focus is one-on-one teaching, so students can develop their artistic and medical esthetic abilities to become masters within the beauty industry,” Hofer states. “Students must be prepared to work together,” she adds, and the entrance requirements are strict to ensure success in the programs the students select.
“We have 17 staff members at our Winnipeg Institute who provide customized training, which include estheticians, technicians and nurses,” she says.
Student service is part of the training program, and involves students working on models who receive discounted rates for a service, Hofer adds. “It provides a learning experience for the students and their work is overseen by the instructors.”
In addition to the education component, Eternal Beauty Institute’s professional medical spa offers an array of services to the public, provided by experienced and seasoned technicians, estheticians and nurses.
Hofer ‘s vision for Eternal Beauty Institute was to train the best so they can have a successful career and provide the best service to their clients. “Women can have an amazing career in beauty,” she emphasizes. “Eternal Beauty offers them that opportunity.”
Hofer credits McBean with laying the foundation and structure for Eternal Beauty’s beginning. “Barbara laid the groundwork for Eternal Beauty that continues to expand and upgrade, keeping in tune with the beauty industry,” she says.
Having accomplished much of what she planned for the Eternal Beauty Institute in Winnipeg, Hofer is on another mission. She is in the process of partnering franchisees in Red Deer and Lethbridge, Alberta, and hiring staff for those locations.

All I can say is “WOW” – what a fabulous home Style Manitoba featured in the summer issue!
White Label Homes earns high praise for this build – it’s a truly extraordinary residence. Thanks for sharing this story with your readers.

Style’s summer issue was a great read! The home gracing your cover was simply spectacular. I’m not usually a fan of strictly black and white décor, but it certainly works well in this case. The glass encased staircase from Fort Rouge Glass, the incredible fireplaces, the outstanding millwork and the use of gleaming tiles throughout the space raise the level of luxury found in this home to celebrity status. Hats off to designer (Soma Interiors), White Label Homes and to all the local suppliers who collaborated on this build.

After enduring pandemic related restrictions for so long, my wife and I truly appreciated receiving a real magazine in our mailbox this summer. Not only is it a great publication overall, but much to our delight, Style Manitoba included an excellent provincial based travel column in this issue. Get Lost in Manitoba this Summer by Greg Klassen gave us some excellent suggestions. Thanks for inspiring us!

My husband and I have been considering either selling and buying a new home, or renovating the one we’re in for some time now. After reading Infill Fabulous, and considering the lack of residential real estate on the market right now, we think renovating is the way to go. It was great reading about AspenGrove Developments, especially when you want your home to blend in well with neighbouring homes in an established community. Good to know there are renovation sources in Winnipeg who consider those important details.

Hockey scores with homeless program
When it comes to helping the homeless, hockey has a heart - a big heart. Back in 1996, a group of Toronto businessmen saw an opportunity to turn a small corporate tournament into a fundraiser for those in need. The inaugural tournament was then called 'Hockey for the Homeless.' The small group of participants raised just over $8,000. This money was used to create 300 “survival kits” that would be handed out to those living on the streets of downtown Toronto. Today, the name has changed slightly to ‘Hockey Helps the Homeless’ (HHTH) and the events are ProAm with a network of over 200 NHL (National Hockey league) Alumni and Olympians with participation from NHL cities and select OHL (Ontario Hockey League) markets in Canada.
“At Hockey Helps the Homeless, we believe that every Canadian should have a safe place to call home and the supports they need to thrive,” says HHTH spokesperson Matt DiPasquale. “We host 14 Pro-Am and 2 Collegiate hockey tournaments across Canada where participants play with purpose in a one-day fantasy hockey tournament to raise funds that directly support those affected by homelessness in their community.”
To date, HHTH has granted over $20 million, thanks to the support of more than 1,000 volunteers, 3,000+ players and 20,000 donors annually.
“Our Pro-Am tournaments give amateur hockey players the opportunity to lace up with some of Canada’s most admired professional hockey players through our network of over 200 NHL Alumni and female Olympians,” says Matt, mentioning that 100% of net proceeds stay local.
According to DiPasquale, HHTH invests in solutions that ensure fewer individuals and families end up on the streets. They do this in partnership with over 45 local organizations committed to ending homelessness through a number of means. These include:
• Emergency, transitional and long-term housing solutions
• Youth support services
• Sports and recreation programming
• Meal services and other key supports
• Education, training and employment
Winnipeg game December 3, 2021
December 3, 2021, pros and amateurs lace up for tournament play at 7-Oaks Arena. Expect to see players Wayne and Dave Babych, Laurie Boschman, and Carey Wilson (and others) join forces with Women Team Canada goalie Sami Jo Small. The format is five on five with one NHL player skating with 14 amateurs and goalie. Food and beverages are complimentary, and participants receive jerseys and socks.

Three Easy Tips for Better Health
By Julie Germaine
“I hate working out.”
Coach Julie: Your workouts can be five minutes long.
“I like food too much.”
Coach Julie: Eat your favourite food every day.
“I don’t have enough time.”
Coach Julie: Okay, two minutes. And with this, you will still improve your physical and mental health! The principles to success in achieving goals are the same. Once you learn them, you can apply them to all areas of your life.
1) Establish you goal and write it out in a positive way. Do NOT jot down “I want to lose weight.” Rather, focus on a habit that will help you reach that outcome, like “I will exercise every day for two weeks.” Or “I will eat two cups of vegetables daily for 10 days.” Notice the actions are
very clear, no vague statements such as, “I will go to the gym” or “I will eat healthier.” You want to create a specific plan to build life-changing habits around a small time frame that will motivate you because shortterm goals are less overwhelming. (Spoiler! When you complete this challenge, you’re going to feel amazing and want to keep going!)
I’m not brand new - you’re not pulling one over on your coach if you’re thinking, “She didn’t say how long my workout had to be, or what else I can eat.” You could literally exercise five minutes and eat nothing but doughnuts after your veggies and you’d be a winner... because if you stuck to your original commitment, you successfully adjusted your daily ritual in a healthy direction. You’ve become the kind of person who works out every day. It counts even if it was short, and eventually you will start to think, “Well, I’m already in my workout gear, I might as well do a few more minutes.” Before you know it, five minutes becomes a half hour - which is loads of time to effect change in your body and release endorphins to boost your mood and energy
levels. Time to add more tiny steps toward achieving your aspirations.
2) Tie your desired new habit to a daily activity you enjoy. Savour your morning java, and then tackle training. Chop vegetables during evenings while you binge your fave series.
3) Create accountability. I’ve got you! Email me right now at julie@ juliegermaine.com with your simple plan. Subject line: “I will stretch every night for ten minutes before bed” or “I will only order in twice weekly.” Trust me to follow up.
Making changes to better yourself isn’t hard. Be kind and patient, and prove you love YOU each day through your actions.

Perfectly crafted outdoor spaces
BY LEA CURRIE
More than a front porch or pool or entertaining space, a large backyard is rated the number one outdoor feature by homeowners. It’s easy to see why in these two magnificent outdoor spaces. These large backyards have become an extension of the homes, providing ample space for recreation, relaxation and entertainment.
“Both outdoor spaces provide all the amenities for a wide variety of social gatherings or just for personal relaxation,” says Neil Boorsma of Neil & Nick’s Landscaping.
Boorsma and business partner, Nick Harasym are the designers behind these luscious outdoor spaces, perfectly crafted to meet the clients’ needs and wants.
“One client kept a similar layout to the existing space and wanted specific areas for specific gatherings. The other extended the hardscaped areas for a
flexible space to easily adapt as their children grew up,” says Boorsma.
While each space is unique and both projects had multiple site plan proposals, revisions and meetings prior to putting a shovel in the ground, there are natural similarities that came through, such as the contemporary designs. For example, rather than traditional pergolas where the beams sit on top of the four support posts, these modern structures feature rafters hanging from the beams and joists, giving the impression that they are floating.
Another common element between the two gorgeous settings stems from Neil & Nick’s Landscaping’s policy to only supply and install locally sourced Barkman concrete pavers. This is what the landscaping firm used to create the pavers, stack stone, planters, steps, fireplaces and fire pits.
Minimal maintenance was a key focus throughout. The spaces have no exposed soil or mulch beds. Dwarf shrubs and grasses were planted for minimal pruning over time, and the landscapers used a wide variety of coniferous and deciduous plants.
“Both projects focused on saving all the mature trees on site to help keep the existing privacy. It allowed us to focus the budget on more higherend finishing products, such as glass railings, in-ground irrigation and a natural gas fire table,” says Harasym.
Even the minor details are carefully thought out to enhance the eyecatching design.
“The ground cover is a combination of smaller crushed decorative rock as well as larger rip-rap. It allows us to design with more depth as opposed to a washout effect of one type of ground cover,” says Harasym.
38 | STYLE MANITOBA | AUTUMN 2021
Boorsma and Harasym are keen to find innovative design and construction methods in their work, which can also result in cost savings for the client.
“On one project we strapped dimensional lumber to the front face of existing railway ties as they were structurally sound. We then clad it with cedar lumber. This provided a large cost savings as opposed to designing a multi-tiered stack stone planter,” says Boorsma.
In the other space, the clients wanted a natural fireplace and a gas fire table situated in one space. This specific layout request required a two-foot grade change to the property line. The landscapers designed a structural concrete pad and grade beam with rebar and screw piles to make the necessary accommodations.
“We understand designing and building your dream backyard can be an expensive and daunting task. We do everything in our power to ensure every client we work with has peace of mind from the beginning of the design process, until the finished product is delivered,” says Boorsma.
Neil & Nick’s Landscaping operates as a design/build contractor and the partners handle all sub-trade coordination.
“If you decide to work with us, you deal directly with the owners who have the most at stake,” says Harasym.

Bring on the heat
BY LEIGH PATTERSON
There’s nothing like a beautiful outdoor fire. It creates a special ambience and brings people together in a way nothing else can. And it can extend the enjoyment of your yard into the cooler seasons.
When it comes to designing and installing firepit and fireplace solutions to fit your lifestyle, the professional team at 3 Seasons Landscaping can bring the heat.
With nearly 40 years of experience in designing and building beautiful yards, there’s no shortage of examples where 3 Seasons has brought their signature quality to bear on the coolest outdoor projects.
In the empty corner of one yard, 3 Seasons installed a flagstone patio anchored by an outdoor fireplace. Rising above it all is a custom wood pergola that defines the area to make it an inviting space.
For another homeowner, the team incorporated a custom-built fireplace with a wood-burning pizza oven into a retaining wall planted with a variety of shrubs and tall, showy grasses. The patio area is nestled into this lower part of the yard to create a private oasis for the family and their guests to enjoy.
For a yard located in a more rural setting, the 3 Seasons team installed a firepit surrounded by large flagstone
40 | STYLE MANITOBA | AUTUMN 2021
patio. To keep the look natural and blend seamlessly with the large property beyond, they softened the patio edges organically with large boulders. Shrubs and grasses surround the sprawling patio, balancing the yard without sacrificing valuable entertainment space. At night, the glow from the central “prairie firepit” imbues a wonderful ambience throughout the entire space. The intimate space feels like a natural, sunken outdoor living room.
The blank canvases presented by yards of newly built homes can be difficult to imagine, but 3 Seasons rises to every occasion with firepits and patio solutions that define the entertainment areas of the yard while complementing new home architecture.
In one case, they used Barkman Roman pavers to build a modern curvilinear, two-level patio area with
a retaining wall planter to soften the home’s linear façade. By installing the patio stones on the lower level in a circular pattern with the firepit at the centre, it becomes the natural focal point and gathering spot. For a backyard in another newer development, they installed a large patio with a firepit in the lower part of the yard. Simple and modern, it is in tune with the rectangular swimming pool and linear hardscaping on the rest of the property. Contemporary ornamental grasses and vibrant, low-growing perennial shrubs like ninebark, add visual interest all year long.
3 Seasons can also design and build spaces to suit existing hardscaping. In a yard with a previously installed custom fireplace, for example, they were able to complement the rosy hues of the fireplace brick with a beautiful stone patio.
From creating elaborate outdoor kitchens to intimate spaces, 3 Seasons has the expertise to turn ordinary outdoor rooms to extraordinary. 3 Seasons can design and build outdoor projects to suit a newly built home or an established yard. They ensure everything they build is attuned to every client’s vision while considering scale, design and colour.
As a full-service, design-build landscaper, 3 Seasons installs patios, pergolas, retaining walls, fireplaces and firepits, irrigation systems, perennials, trees and shrubs. To maximize the enjoyment of the space, they can integrate low voltage lighting to highlight trees, shrubs or other architectural features, and for safety.
If you’re ready to take your yard to the next level with an oasis where warm memories can be made, let 3 Seasons Landscaping deliver the right solution for you.

GARAGE GLORY
Garages used to be the most forgotten 500 square feet of a person’s home. Garage Masters is helping to make this thinking a thing of the past with innovative products that turn forgotten under-utilized space into one of the most dynamic areas on the property.
Winnipeg’s Garage Masters has been building garages in and around the city and province since 1993. According to owner Kevin Harrald, they started seeing people in other major centres approach their garage space differently about eight years ago. To meet what they saw as an emerging trend, Garage Masters brought in polyaspartic floor coatings, unique, storage-friendly cabinetry, PVC slat walls, and specialty accessories to meet the growing demand for design-forward garage spaces in both the renovation and new-build market (Garage Masters builds 150 new projects each year).
“With innovative floor coatings to create a dust and grit free protective finish, and garage organization accessories like racks and cabinets, this area becomes more of an extension of the house itself rather than someplace you forget about,” he says, pointing to current trends such as luxury show-garages, Man Caves and She Sheds.

Parade of excellence
Manitobans have been making a date with the Parade of Homes event for more than 40 years. Today, this bi-annual showcase of the homebuilding arts has become the country’s largest exposition of new residential properties. This season, expect the excitement to continue with the Fall Parade open for viewing October 16-November 7, 2021.
“This is a unique opportunity to get out and see all the options available in the widest groupings of neighbourhoods,” says Manitoba Homes Builders’ Association President and CEO Lanny McInnes, who reports that the event will highlight over 100 sites and 33 builders. Locations include properties in Winnipeg, sites in Brandon, as well as other locations outside Winnipeg like West St Paul, La Salle and St. Adolphe. This year, Panache Homes and Summerview Homes have joined the slate of participating premier builders who make up a Who’s Who of the residential construction sector.
“Our Parade continues to be Canada’s premier event showcasing Manitoba homebuilders,” says McInnes, who mentions that other cities might only show off 30 properties over a single weekend. “Here in Manitoba, we show over 100 homes over four weeks. There is something for every price point, from entry-level to exclusive properties. This year there are duplexes, condos, two-storey singlefamily residences and bungalows, and everything in between. If you are in the new home market, the Fall Parade of Homes is a one-stop-shop that lets you view the entire marketplace,” he says.
Due to COVID-19 restrictions, masks are required to view properties. “We have kept the majority of restrictions from the Spring Parade of Homes intact to maintain safety at sites,” says McInnes. COVID-19 rules include masks and face coverings, a prescreening questionnaire, reduced capacity in showhomes, shorter viewing times of a maximum of 20
minutes per site (longer viewings can be accommodated by discussing with on-site personnel), and physical distancing.
“This is the fourth Parade of Homes we have run during COVID-19, and as an industry, we are very proud of this accomplishment,” says McInnes, inviting Manitobans to take the tour to discover the latest in new home design, home products and trends.

Anticipation builds for Bison Run
BY JENNIFER MCFEE
Excitement is mounting for the dynamic new community of Bison Run in Waverley West.
Located in the heart of southwest Winnipeg, this Qualico community will feature limestone trails and naturalized wetlands to create connections to nature. At the same time, it’s a short jaunt away from shopping and other services on Pembina Highway and the South Kenaston area. For added convenience, the University of Manitoba and IG Field are both in close vicinity, and rapid transit is easily accessible.
Bison Run will feature a range of home styles and price points, including custom and premium homes, multifamily townhomes, condominiums and apartments.
“Architecturally, we’re trying to accommodate a wide variety of home styles and preferences but with guidelines to support the overall welcoming and appealing esthetic,” says Bryan Ward, vice-president of Qualico Communities.
“Throughout the decades, we’ve learned what has been successful in other neighbourhoods, and we’re bringing those elements to the southwest side of the city.”
The first phase will offer an impressive variety of housing options from singlefamily homes to apartments — and everything in between. In addition,
it will also feature some commercial and park spaces, including the start of the linear path network in the neighbourhood. Looking ahead, the upcoming 21-acre education campus will provide both an elementary school and a high school.
The first Phase 1 lots are already available from participating builders, including Avanti Custom Homes. Jason Jaquet, vice-president of Avanti Custom Homes, expressed enthusiasm to be part of this new Qualico development.
“Avanti is designing homes to fit the new area and the guidelines that have been brought forth by the developer. We’re going to be pushing the envelope on new designs, so we’re excited to be in here,” he says.
Avanti will start construction on a new showhome this fall, which will be ready for summer 2022.
“It’s been a very seamless process, and the houses are going to be unique in their architecture features on the street,” Jaquet says.
“We’ve seen the master plan and we’re looking forward to being part of something that Qualico envisions.”
Similarly, StreetSide Developments is pleased to be part of the project. Margaux Braund, marketing and social media co-ordinator for StreetSide
Developments, says they’re extremely excited to be the first approved multifamily builder in Bison Run.
“Starting off, we are planning affordable three-bedroom, 2.5-bathroom multi-level townhomes featuring designer finishes and quality construction that StreetSide is known for,” she says.
“We are also planning a live/work style townhome with attached garage. We will be releasing more details as we finalize our plan, and anyone who is interested in learning more should register on our website.”
Right now, StreetSide is in the process of finalizing plans for building in the area.
“We have seen a surge of interest in our upcoming developments in the Bison Run area and anticipate that our multi-family offerings will be in high demand once we release it for purchase,” Braund says.
“StreetSide has seen an overwhelmingly positive response from the public since announcing that we will be building multi-family developments in Bison Run. We are very excited to be the first multifamily builder in this up-and-coming neighbourhood in Waverley West.”

Something for everyone
BY KELLY GRAY
Prairie Pointe has a lot going for it. A convenient location in southwest Winnipeg, a full slate of amenities, and maturing streetscapes make this prominent new home development by Ladco top of the list for homebuyers.
“Prairie Pointe has something for everyone,” suggests Ladco’s vice-president of development David Borger. “This is an inclusive community where a full range of demographics from families to empty nesters to multi-generation households can find a solution to their new home needs. While there are lots of single-family detached homes, there are also duplexes, townhomes and condos that serve to add to the overall affordability of this highly desirable neighbourhood,” he says.
The community is approaching the halfway point of development, following six years of growth in the 630-acre neighbourhood. Prairie Pointe is now into its fifth stage, with services already established.
“We are in the works for Stage VI coming next year,” adds Michael Carruthers, Ladco’s Manager of Land Development. He remarks that they will be releasing about 150 lots to homebuilders this fall, bringing new opportunities for residential buyers.
“Next year we will see another 400 lots come on board. Just as in the past, these lots will see duplexes, single-family homes and townhouses constructed,” he says, noting that they are using the same all-inclusive thinking with their new Highland Pointe development in north-west Winnipeg where they are just releasing the first 250 lots of a planned 2,200 lot new community.
Prairie Pointe offers a select list of Manitoba’s premier homebuilders. These include A&S Homes, Hilton Homes, and KDR Homes, as well as Ventura Custom Homes, Randall Homes and Signature Homes, plus Qualico and Discovery Homes.
“Prairie Pointe has always been a family-friendly neighbourhood with parks, playgrounds, and connected walking paths,” says Ventura Custom Homes’ Vice-president of Sales and Marketing, Arin Comack. He notes that Prairie Pointe will feature nearly 60 acres of parks and green space when completed. Here, Michael Carruthers points out that they have just added another 750 metres to the linear parkway that courses from Skyline Drive around one of the lakes and out to Waverley Street. This green path offers scenic lookouts, plaza and artistic features throughout the trail.
Comack remarks that Prairie Pointe is a place where there is a home for every budget from entry-level to moveup homes to million-dollar walkouts. He points to their showhomes as good examples. At 245 Ken Oblik Drive, they have a 2,200-square foot, fivebedroom, three-bath single-family property designed in the modern farmhouse style. Over at 70 Ken Wong Bay, Ventura offers a 1,500 square foot two-storey duplex property that features 2.5 baths and three bedrooms.
“At Ventura Custom Homes, we seek to accommodate the full spectrum in the market. Prairie Pointe has been a good fit for this strategy because it has something for everyone,” he says.
Convenient, amenity laden and inclusive, Prairie Pointe is located just west of Kenaston Blvd. in the city’s rapidly expanding southern quadrant. The site is only a short drive to great shopping, restaurants and entertainment features, as well as key employment areas and education institutions in southwest Winnipeg.
“Prairie Pointe offers everything a new development should have,” says David Borger, inviting those interested in investigating the lifestyle opportunities of Prairie Pointe to visit www.ladco.mb.ca

“This home was designed to use the space functionally and efficiently with very little wasted space,” says Melanie Snow, owner of Warkentin Homes.
Snow points to the kitchen as an example of the meticulous design. The layout maximizes countertop workspace and storage, including space for unwieldy items, such as baking pans and garbage bins. The fridge was inset so it does not extend far out into the walkway. A mixture of walnut and polyester cabinetry with matte, leather and gloss textures, and white quartz countertops add dimension.
The 1,619-square-foot, threebedroom, two-bathroom showhome is located in Gateway Point in East St. Paul, just north of Winnipeg. Friendly neighbourhood awaits in Oak Bluff West
BY JENNIFER MCFEE
It’s easy to the see the appeal of Oak Bluff West with its wide-open spaces located mere moments from city limits.
Scott Dyck and his fiancée Leanne Taylor, who moved to the community in July 2020, are happy to call Oak Bluff West home.
“All our neighbours are really nice. This is our first home, so we’re really excited to be living in such a great neighbourhood to start,” says Dyck, who grew up in Oak Bluff. “It’s got more of a small-town vibe. It feels like you’re in the country, but you’re still close to the city.”
Expressing similar sentiments, Taylor agrees the best part of the community is the people.
“Everyone here is super friendly. They want to talk to you and want to help you. It’s been nice getting to know the neighbours,” she says.
“I’m a para-triathlete, and one of the cool things for us about the area is I can do some of my training in the neighbourhood. I hand-cycle, so my bike is really unique. I feel like all the drivers are really respectful in this community. Everyone is always waving and kids always say hi. It’s really cute.”
The couple bought their house from Sterling Homes, and they were pleased with the process.
“I’m a wheelchair user, so we made some changes to make it a bit more accessible,” Taylor says. “We had a good experience with the updates they made.”
Currently, Sterling Homes is featuring a showhome at 12 Stone Hearth Lane that is designed with functionality, flow and style in mind.
“A blend of modern farmhouse inspired finishes and timeless favourites were combined perfectly, creating a warm and inviting home,” says Courtney Sims, marketing manager for Sterling Homes.
Oak Bluff West is a community that’s expertly designed to appeal to everyone throughout many life stages, Sims says.
“It’s perfect, for example, for young families starting out, those looking to downsize or upsize, or wanting a bungalow for retirement. The large lots and rural setting give this community a very special feeling, setting it apart from many other communities,” she says.
“Oak Bluff West is where families can truly plant roots and spend many happy years enjoying their home and the community amenities like the beautiful walking trails.”
Katie Doerksen, marketing and community relations manager for
Qualico Communities, says Phase 4 will feature 23 custom lots on Thompson Court. After that, Phase 5 will include a range of lot sizes from 60 to 84 feet and feature the popular bungalow condos. It will also include a new wetland with a selection of the coveted park lots, which haven’t been available in the community for a number of years. Servicing of Phase 5 is planned for this fall, with lot availability expected by early 2022.
Architectural standards in Oak Bluff West work towards the goal of having an attractive and appealing community, Doerksen adds.
“I think it gives people a sense of comfort knowing that not only will their home be beautiful, but so will all their neighbours’ homes.”
Oak Bluff West is an attractive option for families and individuals looking for more space, beautiful architecture and a friendly community.

The dark grey tinted glass delivers privacy while allowing residents to look out to the woods and river. Custom black framed windows fit the opening perfectly, bringing the outside in.

3Full wall custom mirrors fill the interior space making it look larger. This custom approach includes light cutouts and a full tub shower in the reflection, as well as a black header bar for added detail and support.

Simplicity meets satisfaction
BY KELLY GRAY
Great locations, innovative designs and on-point pricing have made StreetSide Developments a winner in Winnipeg’s fastpaced real estate market. Their new Oak & Ash Estates project off West Winnipeg’s Camp Manitou Road is a great example of their contemporary approach to new home development. Properties at Oak & Ash Estates are in a pre-sales phase. Prices start in the mid-$400Ks, with possession slated for the summer of 2022.
Oak & Ash Estates offers 23 detached condominium bungalows amidst a setting that is both country beautiful and city close. Sited on Camp Manitou Road south of Portage Ave., just west of the Perimeter Highway, Oak & Ash Estates is surrounded by tree-lined walking paths, ponds and fields that are all near city attractions, shopping and services.
Master-planned bungalows deliver either a two or three-bedroom floor plan with designer finishes, attached garage, and optional fireplace, sunroom and patio. Available are three designs from 1533 square feet to 1673 square feet.
The Willow is a 1538-square foot property that features two-bath, twobedroom foot-prints. Layout is an open plan with kitchen that includes a large prep island for cooking and eating, dining and great room all in a line, and featuring large windows that bring the country atmosphere inside. Bedrooms are large. For example, the over 210 square-foot master features an ample ensuite that comes with twin sinks and a spalike shower unit plus a large walk-in closet.
The Scarlet is another two-bedroom, two-bathroom design. This model is slightly larger than The Willow at 1673 square feet and delivers additional space for a home office and a two-piece bathroom near the rear entrance. The second bedroom comes appointed with an ensuite bathroom as well as an impressive 11-foot closet.
The Evergreen design is ideal as a three-bedroom, two-bath residence at 1673 square feet.
“The key feature about living in a StreetSide bungalow community is less maintenance so you can enjoy what matters most,” says StreetSide Developments’ Marketing
Co-ordinator Margaux Braund. “Residents can also feel safe leaving their home for the winter knowing that they are part of a safe condominium community.”
Braund comments that StreetSide is part of the Qualico family of businesses and is fuelled by creativity and inspired by modern living. “As Winnipeg’s leading condominium developer, we’ve set ourselves apart over the past three decades with successful projects such as Place Joseph Royal, Ship Street Village, and Verve Tache, among many others. As a local builder with heart, we’re here to make sure you get the home that you love.”

HOW TO SAVE ON YOUR NATURAL GAS ENERGY BILL
Do you heat your home or water with natural gas? If so, it’s a good idea to find ways to cut your gas consumption.
You may have heard the saying that the cheapest energy is the energy you never use. How are you using natural gas: heating your home? Cooking dinner? Relaxing in front of your fireplace?
As cooler weather approaches, we’re here to provide helpful tips about how to save energy and money during Manitoba’s cold weather seasons. Everyone uses energy differently and has individual circumstances to consider, but here are some general things to think about.
• Do regular maintenance. Be it door weather-stripping, seasonal furnace check-ups, filter changes, or filling cracks, a well-maintained home will run more efficiently and minimize energy waste.
• If you have a natural gas furnace, it needs to be able to spread the heat around. That means grills and registers have to be kept clean and clear of obstructions like furniture. You may even need to clean your ducts.
• If you’re heating your water with natural gas, it’s your second largest energy cost next to heating your home. Using less hot water can save you money. Wash your clothes in cold water whenever possible. Install low-flow showerheads and faucet aerators. Wash full loads of laundry. And if you have a dishwasher, use its energy-saving settings.
• Upgrade to a smart Wi-Fi connected thermostat. Using its many features, including scheduling and geofencing, can help you save. We also offer a $50 rebate on eligible models.
• Consider the assistance we provide to improve the insulation in your home. That works directly to reduce

the consumption of natural gas, and we can provide you with rebates through our Home Insulation Program
• Air leakage can significantly reduce the comfort and durability of your home, as well as increase your energy costs. If there’s a gap or a crack that air can get through, it will. If you can see daylight anywhere, you’re inviting in cold air and higher energy bills. Weatherstripping, including window insulating film and caulking, are staples of good airtightness maintenance. Make sure you air seal before starting any major insulation projects.
• Let the sun in. During our sunny Manitoba winters, sunlight displaces some of the natural gas your furnace (or boiler) would have used. Using window coverings when it’s not sunny can reduce the heat you lose to a window, increasing your comfort and lowering your costs.
• Sometimes small changes can still be a benefit. Electrical outlets can allow cold air to sneak in and force you to raise your thermostat setting. Insulating foam gaskets for your electrical outlets on exterior walls can help you save.
So, are you using natural gas efficiently? These are just a few tips for minimizing your natural gas use, and we want to help you take these steps. Check out our website to learn about our programs and offers, and send our Energy Team an email if you have any questions.

Make your mark

Fully custom-built homes and renovation projects often come with significant challenges. Having the right team at the start of a new home build or a renovation project means peace of mind and sound sleeps. This is where White Label Homes stands out.
White Label Homes was founded on the premise that design and construction shouldn’t be at odds and service should be paramount. According to company president and White Label Homes’ co-founder Daniel Melendez, their team of seasoned experts works diligently to remove the pain-points often associated with residential renovation or construction projects.
“We start with the basic understanding that our projects are our clients’ homes. Once construction

is complete, people will live in these spaces for years to come. Designs must align with the lifestyles and personal tastes of the people for whom we build. White Label Homes’ mission is to allow people to make their mark with renovations that feature high specification materials and designs that respect both the client’s unique sense of aesthetics, as well as the building’s architectural needs,” says Melendez.
A recent project in Winnipeg’s middle-Tuxedo neighbourhood is a great example of White Label Homes’ commitment to construction excellence that brought to reality the client’s vision and love for mid-century modern interiors. The Tuxedo project, designed by Rita Talwar of Soma Interiors, sought to update a classic mid-century modern bungalow to contemporary standards with luxury finishes and elements that have restored this property to its former glory and elevated the luxury to new heights.
Melendez points to the stunning kitchen that features unique stone countertops from Ital-Stone Design.

The kitchen is a masterpiece reworked in a white palette that delivers a bright, airy feel throughout the home. Melendez comments that the specialty stone offers a unique translucence that brings a one-ofa-kind appearance with complex depth and beautiful, well-balanced variations.
“It was wonderful to watch the crew at Ital-Stone Design perform the installation. The stone is very delicate and requires a deft touch to create the appearance of simplicity in this home,” he says, mentioning further that the stone perfectly complemented the retro mid-century modern design.
The custom millwork and wood accents are other aspects of the project that helped the design reach its peak. Interior wood finishes are important components to designs that seek to recreate characteristic mid-century modern approaches. This Tuxedo home utilized highly custom walnut wood casework from Lucien Millwork (2018) Ltd to achieve its design goals. For example, wood screen accents are found on walls and ceilings in treatments that create spatial separation amid the openness of the kitchen and dining areas. A custom planter in the dining nook adds softness to the room while creating privacy from outside views. Lucien Millwork’s excellence extends to the bathroom, where the custom double vanity features impressive attention to detail.
“The grains match on the doors with a centered veneer that creates balance. The design flow is further accentuated on the bathroom dressing table with the use of elements similar to the wood screen treatments found in other areas of the home,” says Melendez, noting that designer Rita Talwar added a hidden mirror to the dressing table that enhanced functionality while allowing the wood design elements to stand out as an artistic bridge connecting the flow of the overall plan.
Windows are another key design aspect of this updated property. Built by Duxton Windows, White Label Homes' project used fibreglass frames with mullions and edges that mirrored the architecture of the home. This element created a

harmony between the exterior and the interior, resulting in unity in the overall design. The fibreglass frames also contribute positively to the building’s eco-footprint. Fibreglass windows offer reduced conductivity to heat and cold, even though the frames are thinner than other styles such as metal or PVC. The frames are also more stable in our harsh Manitoba environment. This stability means better seals throughout the window as well as greater longevity of product.
The dedicated team at White Label Homes enables their clients to make their own mark. “Yes, we are a professional team that designs and builds exclusive properties and undertake exacting and precise renovations. In the end, it is our clients’ vision that inspires and invigorates the process. We build their space, and they leave their mark. Our goal is to bring their dreams to life and allow our clients to make a statement in built form,” he says, inviting people to visit whitelabelhomes.ca to discover the intersection where great designs meet building professionals.

Design Meets Technology
3D Tech offers new approach to interior design
BY DONNA MINKUS
If you want to know what your dream kitchen will look like before it’s actually built, you will want to get in touch with Rita Talwar, owner and principal designer at Soma Interiors.
Through the incorporation of 3D technology into the design/ construction process (3D printing, rendering and Virtual Reality), Soma Interiors offers an immersive experience as an option in the pre-construction phase. A 3D model is constructed so that a client can virtually walk through and experience the design via a headset. If there is a struggle with a kitchen counter selection, for instance, the client can toggle between materials allowing them to make a more confident design decision.
“What makes us unique is that we treat 3D tech as a tool in the process,” Talwar says. “Virtual experience is a defining advantage in design, but perhaps more so during construction,” she adds. “In renovating, for example, each trade conducts a virtual walk-through. As a result, they too understand how their work will connect to the next as they can see how the details tie together.”
Talwar, who developed her design philosophy while working on her Masters of Interior Design, describes the creative process as listening, articulating, and developing functional and aesthetic spaces for clients. From start to finish, Talwar is committed to giving clients what they need and creating the space that works for them.
“Details matter,” she explains. “Clients tell us what they want, but it’s the dialogue between us that determines the final design; space is a powerful entity, in the end it will influence its users.”
Soma Interiors prides itself on quality service, covering the job from concept design to contract administration. “We are involved in every aspect of the project from space planning to construction documents to contract administration,” Talwar says. Project budgets range from jobs for $30,000 to $5 million homes, she adds.
“We can work within anyone’s budget. There’s a misconception that Interior design is a luxury. We can keep things affordable and still give clients what they want to enrich their lives.”
A hands-on designer, Talwar is part of every project her company takes on, whether it’s an entire home, residential upgrade or a commercial retail space. “I meet with clients and maintain that connection throughout the project,” she says. “I love what I do and part of that is building relationships that last long after our work is done.”

A Perfect Night’s Sleep
BY DONNA MINKUS
Smart topper keeps your bed cool and dry
Aproblem with sleep was the impetus for a product that provides relief for untold numbers who spent much of the night tossing and turning, trying to find a cool spot in their bed.
The product that would solve the problem is called The Smart Topper. The technology behind the product was developed by two engineers - Jason Elliott and Marty Furse. Elliott, who had worked in product development, was telling Furse about his inability to get a good sleep because his bed heats up quickly and he is constantly rolling over to find a cool spot in his bed.
“Marty’s a serial entrepreneur,” Elliott says, “and we had been looking for a product to develop. Our discussion about my sleep issues triggered the idea for a thermally controlled bed.”
It took two years to develop the technology for The Smart Topper, which they launched under the company name Perfectly Snug. The company - now three years old - manufactures the product in Vancouver.
“Perfectly Snug Smart Topper is
different than any product on the market because the technology allows the mattress cover to maintain a constant temperature. Other products feel cool at first but they don’t stay cool. The Smart Topper allows air to circulate underneath and around you. When you climb into bed and feel that cool sensation, your bed stays like that all night because the controlled air flows keep you cool and dry.”
To develop the technology, Elliott put sensors in his bed to measure what happens in sleep. “Within 45 minutes the bed heats up to 38 degrees Celsius,” he explains. “Heat causes people to roll over to find a cool spot. You are constantly rolling over so you never get into a deep sleep cycle and wake up feeling unrested. Once we understood the problem, we were able to develop the technology that could stop that from happening.”
The special layers are what prevent heat from being trapped, he says. The Smart Topper is two inches thick and is made of four layers. The
made from high quality memory foam for supreme comfort. Next is the heating layer, which provides warmth if you are cold (perfect for winter). On top is a special material that allows air from the small fans to move against your body, providing cooling and temperature regulation. Your temperature is monitored with sensors throughout the Smart Topper and the amount of airflow is controlled to keep you at your preferred temperature.
Control buttons are built into each side of The Smart Topper, which allows for easy temperature adjustment, Elliott points out.
“Independent settings are great for couples who have different bed temperature preferences. Each can set the temperature on their side of the bed and be comfortable at their desired setting.”
Distributed primarily through e-commerce, The Smart Topper can be delivered anywhere in North America. “We primarily rely on social media to advertise our product,” Elliott says. “We use a number of platforms, including our website, and Google ads but primarily we advertise on Facebook. We’ve had great response from across the country using social media.”

White shaker cabinetry is the little black dress of kitchens: timeless and goes with everything. Here, a vaulted ceiling with rustic beam and floating shelves enhance the cabinetry’s eternal appearance.
“My vision for this kitchen renovation was to create an open concept, airy, bright space with a modern farmhouse feel by removing the wall between the dining room and kitchen to accentuate the vaulted ceiling,” says Kitchen Craft designer Joan Wong. “The L-shape and island layout was replaced with a galley and larger island.”
Kitchen Craft’s Newhaven cabinetry in whitecap opaque finish is beautifully matched by the veined quartz countertops. Trendy accessories include rustic pine accents and black linear hardware and lighting fixtures for the popular modern farmhouse look.
“These finishes are neutral yet contrast strikingly when used next to each other,” says Wong.
The renovation also included giving the once-shiny birch hardwood floor a matte finish to coordinate with the floating shelves and beam. Useful touches include wider-than-normal cabinet doors, heavyduty wood drawers and built-in double oven.

Gone are the days of hideous ceiling fans with wicker inserts in the blades and hurricane glass shades.
“It’s not your grandmother’s fan,” says Simon Simkin, co-owner of Super-Lite of the Maverick ceiling fan from Monte Carlo Fan Collections. “It’s become one of our best selling fans.”
The contemporary ceiling fan comes in a variety of sizes and colours, with or without a light. If chosen, the bright LED light is integrated into the body of the fan and dimmable. The fan’s direct current motor is quiet and extremely energy efficient. It comes with a remote control and wall controls are available. Some models and finishes are also weatherproof.
Beyond the beauty, there’s a natural practicality to a ceiling fan year-round.
“It really helps the comfort level in a room in both summer and winter because it sets up an airflow pattern in the room and keeps the temperature even,” says Simkin.
Super-Lite is Winnipeg’s largest showroom with ceiling fans, lights for inside and out, and more. They offer a variety of different styles for all spaces, and in a beautiful setting that allows customers to visualize the products in their own home.

Whisk Up Some Light
What could be more fitting for a kitchen than whisk-inspired lighting? The dynamic Frusta pendant by Eurofase Lighting has a steel construction with beaded chain cage that beautifully mimics the kitchen instrument, while matching the home’s traditional meets modern feel.
“This fixture has a soft industrial design and was the perfect fit to tie together the elements in the room,” says Adilia Silva, general manager for Total Lighting.
Custom cabinetry complements overall design
A home renovation is a great time to bring new life to your space. This gorgeous walnut vanity was created to complement the overall design of the bathroom shown here. Its elongated structure and the
continuous line of the grain gives the vanity a sharp look. Manufactured by Lucien Millwork (2018) Ltd., a custom woodworking company in Winnipeg, the cabinet beautifully meets the home renovation concept
Designed in Canada, the pendant uses an integrated LED that is dimmable, making it an eco-friendly choice.
The use of three pendants rather than one larger fixture was strategic. “It keeps a level of simplicity with repetition, while still having that ‘statement’ feel at the same time in this space,” says Silva.
Total Lighting, located at 347 William Avenue, has a unique open concept showroom with the latest lighting, from traditional chandeliers to industrial pendants like this one.
“We are your one-stop shop for all lighting related products. Our fantastic and experienced team can help find the perfect style to fit your space and budget,” says Silva. “Function and beauty – you can have it all! We are where bright ideas begin.”
Total Lighting has been illuminating Winnipeg homes and businesses for over 45 years.
from Soma Interiors to create forms that emphasized the horizon line.
“It is very rewarding being able to create someone’s concept into a final product that the customer will be able to enjoy in their new space,” says Jeff Thurlbeck, president for Lucien Millwork (2018) Ltd.
The low-lying, floating vanity and complementary cabinet use rift cut, book matched walnut to achieve the tight grain lines. Interior pullouts hidden behind the doors and drawers keep the front clean and sleek. Behind the upper cabinet is a lighted mirror for a touch of glamour. The walnut is finished with postcatalyzed lacquer for durability.
“In my opinion, walnut is one of the most beautiful and elegant woods,” says Thurlbeck.
Ital-Stone Design fabricated the knife-edge quartz countertop, and the overall renovation was coordinated by White Label Homes.
