Former showhome epitomizes the height of craftsmanship

Location, location, location.

Built on one of the few available residential lots in the established Tuxedo neighbourhood, this house is the height of luxury. That’s precisely why Artista Homes chose this site as the backdrop to their homebuilding expertise.

“This home truly epitomizes what a new build can be,” says Artista Homes’ Frank Cotroneo.

The Artista Homes team completed the 4,400-square foot former showhome in 2021 in time to be included in the Fall Parade of Homes, where it won an award, and then the hearts of the family that ultimately purchased it.

“It checked all the boxes for them,” says Cotroneo. One of those boxes was a three-car tandem garage, a rarity for the area. It’s among the many attributes that attracted the homebuyers.

Add to this the handsome and striking exterior, with a white fieldstone façade, and painted structural timber beams that frame the second-floor balcony to recreate the “mountain modern” feel the builder envisioned. From this welcoming spot, “you know are about to walk into something special,” says Cotroneo. Special indeed. Ascending to the main level up a short flight of stairs, one enters a living area that houses several spacious zones—each equally functional and stylish in their own right.

with grey, black and charcoal accents used throughout the home to imbue warmth amid the overall white colour scheme.

The builder’s commitment to whole home luxury extends to the lower level, too. “We wanted to keep the open and airy quality here as found in the rest of the house,” says Cotroneo. “We achieved that by incorporating large, four-foothigh windows where we could, to maximize the natural light.”

The same engineered hardwoods, large windows, lighting and finishing materials help maintain continuity in the home from top to bottom.

With room for a games area, plus a wet bar equipped with a bar fridge, sink and storage, it’s the perfect setup for entertaining. A cozy seating area, with its 70-inch linear gas fireplace inset into an accent wall of painted pine wood cladding, is a perfect spot to settle in and relax. If it’s music you’re after, Winnipeg Symphony has their two main classical series, as usual.

(A)bsolute Classics kicks off with two works by two giants of the musical world. First, there’s Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky's romantic Suite No. 3 in G major. Also on the bill is a work by Manuel de Falla. Turns out that the great Spanish composer loved Polish music. He never completed an intended stage work based on the music of Chopin but did leave his rarely performed piece Fuego fatuo. Both works are complemented by Mykola Lysenko’s Overture to Taras Bulba. (Saturday, Nov 5. Andrey Boreyko, conductor.)

Sneaking in before that Tchaikovsky work, (B)eyond Classics presents an evening of Dmitri Shostakovich (Symphony No. 10), Erich Wolfgang Korngold (Cello Concerto), Maxim Berezovsky (Symphony in C), and yes, Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky (Variations on a Rococo Theme, original version). That Tchaikovsky kid is going to go places. (Saturday, Oct 8. Daniel Raiskin, conductor, Bryan Cheng, cello)

More music from Live at the WSO (Formerly Pops)! Hometown heroes the Crash Test Dummies wrapped up

their 2022 World Tour, and now original members Brad Roberts, Ellen Reid, Dan Roberts, and Mitch Dorge will perform favourites from their entire catalogue (like Superman’s Song and Mmm Mmm Mmm) for two nights with the WSO. (Sept 23 & 24. Julian Pellicano, conductor)

Next, enjoy a jaw-dropping performance by master illusionist Michael Grandinetti, accompanied by spectacular symphonic selections. Magically blooming roses, levitation, even mind reading, as the orchestra plays pieces of music audience members were thinking of. Who knows what will happen at the Symphony of Illusions? Halloween is just around the corner, and Live at the WSO: BMO Night at the Movies has an extra-special, spooky treat planned. In celebration of the 100th anniversary of the silent horror film Nosferatu, by F.W. Murnau, the WSO presents a special screening of the nightmarish 1922 German classic (with English subtitles) on the big screen, while the WSO performs Hans Erdmann’s score live. Maybe a different movie genre is more your taste. How about a family classic that still packs a punch? Macaulay Culkin is Kevin McCallister, an eight-

year-old boy who’s accidentally left Home Alone when his family leaves for Christmas vacation. Everyone knows what happens when a couple of bungling thieves try their luck. Kevin! (Nov 25 & 26. Julian Pellicano, conductor)

More child’s play with Kids Concerts with the WSO presents Alligator Pie. Dennis Lee’s well-loved children’s rhymes come to life through music and song thanks to a fun and whimsical orchestral score by Canadian composer Abigail Richardson-Schulte. (Oct 2 matinee. Naomi Woo, conductor. All WSO concerts at the Centennial Concert Hall unless noted.)

The Manitoba Chamber Orchestra is celebrating its 50th Anniversary. The celebrations kick off with the Bruno Sisters: Yolanda (violin) and Carmen (cello) performing Vivaldi’s Concerto for Violin, Cello, and Strings. Plus, Bach’s banging Brandenburg Concerto No. 1, Stravinsky’s mischievous Pulcinella Suite, a reprise performance of Julian Grant’s riveting Jump Cuts, and Charles Cozens’ Eligie. (Sept 28, with numerous viewing options: matinee, evening, and online. Anne Manson, Music Director)

Next, a match-up between titans: Beethoven Versus Haydn. Beethoven once claimed he “never learned anything” from his former teacher Haydn. On the other hand, Haydn gave less than glowing reviews of his student’s music. The evidence: Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7 and Haydn’s Symphony No. 96, ‘the Miracle.’ Everyone wins. Then, The Winnipeg Singers and their conductor Yuri Klaz join the MCO for a production of Bach’s F major Lutheran Mass, with its glorious choruses and profound arias. On the same bill: Handel’s joyful Water Music. (Oct 26, evening in-person or online concerts. Alexander Weimann, conductor)

Next, in a packed MCO season, is conductor John Yoo (“The guy simply oozes music,” Rocky Mountain News) along with guest star flutist (and wife!) Alice Dade. The duo team up for a new flute concerto by Michael Fine and Bach’s Orchestral Suite No. 2. Plus, Bartok’s much-loved Music for Strings,

Royal Winnipeg Ballet presents The Handmaid’s Tale

Percussion, and Celesta. (Nov 9, evening in-person and online presentations. All MCO concerts at Westminster United Church, 745 Westminster Ave)

Meanwhile, Virtuosi Concerts presents Virtuosa! With Infusion Baroque, playing music of the 17th and 18th centuries on historical instruments, including works by once-popular composers such as Barbara Strozzi, Ana Bon, and Élisabeth-Claude Jacquet de La Guerre, as well as works by W. A. Mozart and Antonio Vivaldi written for women who were famous instrumentalists of their day. (Oct 30)

Next, From Far Above: Bringer of Light showcases duo Marina Thibeault (viola) and Janelle Fung (piano) for a program featuring works by Clara Schumann, Nadia Boulanger, and Rebecca Clarke, as well as contemporary compositions by Alexina Louie, Anna Pidjorna, and Manitoba-based violist-composer Melody McKiver. Manitoba Opera presents a true ragsto-riches story with La Cenerentola, Gioachino Rossini's take on Cinderella, with libretto by Jacopo Ferretti. A social-climbing stepfather, ungrateful stepsisters, a prince disguised as a servant, and love at first sight: Lizzy Hoyt as Angelina/Cenerentola has a lot to sing about in this light-hearted classic of bel canto, last presented by Manitoba Opera in 1996. (Nov 12, 15 & 18. Sung in Italian with English projections. Tyrone Patterson, conductor. Centennial Concert Hall)

When it comes to New Music, Groundswell has a lot going on. First off, GroundSwell brings nine-piece Ensemble Télémaque from Marseille, France, to Winnipeg and Brandon for a diverse concert featuring four new pieces written for this concert by Bekah Simms, Rita Ueda, James O’Callaghan and Jim Hiscott, plus other works from France and North America, performed by one of the best chamber ensembles in France. (Sept 20, Collège Louis Riel; Sept 21, Théâtre Cercle Molière; Sept 22, Lorne Watson Recital Hall, Brandon University School of Music)

Next, Avant-garde chamber music ensemble Standing Wave makes their Groundswell debut with a program composed of new and recently commissioned pieces for ensemble, interactive

electronics and video, including work from their JUNO-nominated album 20C Remix. (Oct 20, Winnipeg Art Gallery, Muriel Richardson Auditorium)

Then, Megumi Masaki presents Transformation, a celebration of human resilience, featuring four interactive multimedia works, including a collaboration between T. Patrick Carrabré and Margaret Atwood, a piece by Bob Pritchard honouring Japanese Canadians sent to internment camps during WW2, and Ai WeiWei: On Poetry by Gordon Fitzell, centered on an inspirational text by the famed Chinese artist and activist. (Nov 17, Winnipeg Art Gallery, Muriel Richardson Auditorium. All GroundSwell Live concerts are pay what-you-can.)

Winnipeg Jazz Orchestra is celebrating their 25th anniversary with a celebration featuring a special guest: clarinetist, saxophonist, and WJO co-founder Sasha Boychuk. Hits by Benny Goodman, Count Basie, and Duke Ellington plus WJO favourites from years past will make this silver anniversary a swingin’ affair. (Oct 27, West End Cultural Centre)

Next, WJO present Viva La Musica, featuring the Cuban-inspired Congolese music known as Rumba Lingala, popular in Tanzania, Kenya, and Uganda. With the help of special guests, WJO will showcase the fiery rhythm and joyous melody of Congolese music. (Nov 6, Centre Cultural FrancoManitobain)

Then, WJO goes Back to the Future with performances of forward-looking music by artists including Miles Davis, Oliver Nelson, Thelonius Monk, Wynton Marsalis, and Ornette Coleman alongside brand-new compositions by Fred Stride and Jean-Nicolas Trottier. (Nov 27, Winnipeg Art Gallery)

DANCE

Royal Winnipeg Ballet presents The Handmaid’s Tale. Margaret Atwood’s cautionary tale is choreographed by Lila York, to music by James McMillan, Arvo Pärt, and others. (Oct 12–16, Centennial Concert Hall)

THEATRE

The Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre Mainstage kicks off with the stage adaptation (by Lee Hall) of the classic Paddy Chayefsky film Network, directed by Daryl Cloran. When news anchor Howard Beale goes off the rails on-camera, the ratings skyrocket as he taps into the anxiety of contemporary society. But is he a prophet or a puppet? Do not adjust your set. Next, it’s the original swashbucklers

The Three Musketeers, with Catherine Bush’s adaption of the novel by Alexandre Dumas, directed by Christopher Brauer. D’Artagnan arrives in Paris where he meets the famous trio: Athos, Porthos, and Aramis. He dreams of joining the King’s Musketeers, but will he prove himself worthy to join their ranks and defend the King’s honour? It’s all for one and one for all! (Nov 24 - Dec 17, preview Nov 23. Meanwhile, the Warehouse presents New by Winnipeg-born Pamela Mala Sinha, directed by Alan Dilworth. An inspiring story of risking it all and finding yourself, New tells the story of a group of immigrants from India in 1970s Winnipeg, it’s never too late to start again. (Nov 3 – 19, preview Nov 2. Prairie Theatre Centre explores what it means to be a Bad Parent in the play by Ins Choi. A funny, no-holds-barred portrait of young parents struggling to find their way. Winnipeg Jewish Theatre presents Old Stock: A Refugee Love Story, written by Hannah Moscovitch, with songs by Ben Caplan and Christian Barry. This Klezmer music-theatre hybrid, inspired by the true stories of Jewish Romanian refugees to Canada, has played all over the world. (Oct 29 - Nov 6, preview Oct 27. Directed by Christian Barry. It’s back to the 1950s as Celebrations Dinner Theatre presents Greased. Take

a nostalgic trip as rock and roll classics of the ‘50s are queued up and ready. Think malt shops, sock hops, cheerleaders, and greasers. (Sept 9 - Nov 13. All performances include a multi-course dinner. Celebration Dinner Theatre, Canad Inns Fort Garry, 1824 Pembina Hwy)

From Broadway comes the remarkable, true story of 7,000 stranded passengers and the small town in Newfoundland that welcomed them. Come From Away has charmed audiences across North America, and now The New York Times Critics’ Pick arrives in Winnipeg. Newsweek says, “It takes you to a place you never want to leave!” (Oct 25-30, Centennial Concert Hall)

The following month, the Gas Station Theatre hosts Ken Ludwig's The Game's Afoot: Holmes for the Holidays, a mystery/ farce about you-know-who. It’s elementary! (Nov 18 & 19, Gas Station Arts Centre)

And for the younger set, Manitoba Theatre for Young People presents a stage production of the children’s classic The Velveteen Rabbit, the heart-warming story of a very shy toy rabbit who

longs for nothing more than to become real. (Oct 14, 15, 22 & 23)

And for older kids: Cranked: The Remix. Eckhart Hall is home to the Wanda Koop retrospective View from Here. Another prominent Manitoba artist is showcased in Robert Houle: Red is Beautiful, featuring installations, paintings, and drawings created between 1970 and 2020 from one of the most influential First Nations artists in the contemporary art world. The Canadian Museum for Human Rights has several long-running exhibitions. Behind Racism: Challenging the Way We Think examines what science can teach us about racism (to Oct 16). The Historical Museum of St. JamesAssiniboia has three buildings to explore. The Municipal Hall Building was built sometime after 1911 and now contains the history of the St. JamesAssiniboia area. The two-storey 1856 Red River Frame House has been part of the museum since 1973. Finally, the Interpretive Centre was built for the museum in the early 1970s and showcases tools and equipment used outside the pioneer home. The Turning Year

Garlands came late for underrated composer Roger Eno after he teamed with brother Brian Eno for last year’s Mixing Colours. Those pensive instrumental works for keyboards are echoed here in the synthesizers of “Stars and Wheels,” but most of The Turning Year breathes in gentler piano territory that could be New Age balm if such music allowed unsettling ripples. Most of those come from a German string ensemble, Scoring Berlin, which adds unexpected surges and wordless dramatic commentary to thoughtful but undemonstrative piano works for engaging push and pull. The closing “Low Cloud, Dark Skies” is arresting by that pairing. In sunnier territory, the slow, beautiful waltz, “An Intimate Distance” is a soundtrack theme awaiting the right French movie. Call it New Edge.

SINIKKA LANGELAND

The Magical Forest (ecm)

In a spirit similar to Loreena McKennitt or Alexis Kochan, Norwegian singer/songwriter Sinikka Langeland digs deep into folk music tradition, unearthing ancient stories and tracking the perfumed trails of mysticism. Much of her research has been in Finnskogen, a region that connects culturally from Finland through Russia and Siberia to Japan, and her instrument is the kantele, an indigenous Finnish/ Karelian zither that under her fingers can conjure harp, harpsichord and raindrop echoes, but in the best ways this music is moored to neither time nor place. Credit generous arrangements that welcome input from her great players, with the airy, swinging drumming of Markku Ounaskari and the deep double bass of Anders Jormin – virtually the other half of the leader’s heartbeat – matched by the burly horns of Arve Henriksen and Trygve Seim, and the pure choral voices of Trio Mediaeval. English translations and generous historical notes are included.

FITNESS TIPS: Transition Your Routine Indoors

Don’t shoot the messenger, but as we enjoy the beauty of autumn, the chill of winter is fast approaching. While it is tough to leave the warm days of summer behind, autumn is a perfect time to start a new fitness program.

Bring yourself back to the days when September meant new school clothes, supplies, and a change of scenery as you progressed through the grades. There is a unique energy that comes with beginnings, and even if you were active through July and August (yay you!), your routine will surely need a refresh to adapt with the seasons.

Here are some tips for a healthy transition into the colder months ahead.

1.Rehab as a priority

Have you had an ache that you’ve been suffering with since the spring? Now is the best time to visit your physiotherapist to get it looked at and book a series of deep-tissue massages. Dropping temperatures can irritate muscle and joint pain, so you are doing yourself a kindness to prioritize recovery this fall.

2.Breathe in the outdoors

I won’t remind you again, because I know my fellow Manitobans get me when I encourage them to enjoy the scenic fall colours before the snow falls. (Oh, sorry, I said it!) Autumn is ideal exercise weather, so gather up a couple friends for a hike or brisk walk, and create some beautiful stories to share with the world.

3.Plan your winter workouts

Developing a plan for your cold-weather exercise routine is important and it’s never too early to start shopping options. Make a list of activities you’ve wanted to try, like kickboxing for endurance, weight training for body shaping, or Pilates for flexibility, and narrow down which classes are convenient and realistic for you. Remember that while there are local options, there are also many fantastic virtual programs to choose from these days. Many businesses

4.Track your calories in creative ways

If you haven’t already invested in a fitness watch, you may want to think about it, or perhaps put it on your Christmas list. Wearing this while playing with your grandkids or raking the leaves can give you all the good feels when you realize how many calories you’re inadvertently burning.

It can take some effort to continue to be active as the leaves fall, but forcing good habits is important for your mental and physical health. No hibernating for the winter for us – haven’t we had enough staying home to last a lifetime? Instead, keep active and exude energy!

Community Renewal Through Art

There’s a palpable sense of energy in the air as passersby watch artists work on four tri-sided mural frames, outdoors at 943 Portage Avenue. Bright colours and bold lines vibrate in the late summer heat.

An initiative of the West End Biz in collaboration with the City of Winnipeg, the RENEW Art Project brings together a dozen local artists working collectively to create 12 individual murals. Although the 10x10foot artworks will eventually be permanently installed throughout the West End, the creative process is unfolding in a public outdoor mural garden. Aluminum panels are temporarily installed on wheeled free-standing triangular wood frames, displaying a mural on each side to provide interesting angles and maximum exposure. “We regularly move them around so every work – and artist –has a chance to face the street and be seen,” says Mandy van Leeuwen, curator for the project. “I think it’s important in terms of making both the art and the process accessible to everyone.”

The West End Biz has a long history of working with van Leeuwen, an accomplished and experienced mural artist whose work can be seen

throughout the city and province. After securing a grant from the City of Winnipeg, the organization approached the muralist to develop a vision and turn the project into reality.

tion,” says van Leeuwen. “The goal is to breathe new life into the community while working collectively in a space that offers us, as artists, the opportunity to build relationships, support each other’s creative journey, and best of all, create a lasting reminder that art is healing, connective, and transformative.”

Participation in the project was by invitation. Van Leeuwen delved into the deep and diverse connections she has made throughout the local art community. “I knew that these artists would naturally be great at this because, in many cases, I’ve followed them for so long and admire their work,” she explains. Some were colleagues with whom she had previously worked; others she followed on social media.

Starting from a viewpoint of endless possibility, of celebrating the diversity of these artists and what they create, she offered them an opportunity to embrace their unique styles of art in a meaningful and dynamic way. “I sent out the invitations,” continues van Leeuwen, “and they all said yes!”

The 12 artists working on this project are Cheney Lansard, Franklin Fernando, Jessica Canard, Jeannie White Bird, Jonato Dalayoan, Kal Barteski, Kevin Celestino, Michel Saint Hilaire, Mike Valcourt, Nereo Zorro, Stormy Angeconeb and Xavier Mutshipayi.

The vivid colours of Xavier Mutshipayi’s work, titled Sisterhood, were inspired by the way he has experienced the people of Winnipeg. “I like the way people are open to each other regardless of culture, nationality, or gender,” says the artist, who started making art at the age of five, while growing up in The Congo. He has had several exhibits in Winnipeg and was preparing for an exhibit in Edmonton, which he delayed so he could participate in Renew.

“It’s an honour to be part of this collaboration and work beside talented artists in the community,” he says. “It’s a fabulous experience. We make connections and exchange ideas. All the artists here are so happy to be sharing this time together.” He sees the collective project as a great opportunity for both his personal development and his career. Although it’s the first mural he has ever done, it was something he always wanted to do.

The Renew Art Project was an opportunity for Keven Celestino to work on his first mural as well. “I don’t know if I can ever go back to bending

over a table,” says the artist, adding that he started working on his piece by exploring the meaning of renewal. “I wanted it to be a process of discovery. I didn’t know what it was going to look like at first, but I knew I was going to figure it out. It’s so great to work with other artists. I’ve learned so much from everyone.”

On the day that Style Manitoba visited the art garden, Stormy Angeconeb was exploring the use of a roller and a paint sprayer for the first time. “I get to learn new tricks,” says the artist as she creates the backdrop for the Ojibway florals that will reflect her heritage. “I am expanding my abilities.” Previous projects have included murals on the West End Cultural Centre, at the Forks, and on the New West Hotel.

Artist Jeannie White Bird is also drawing from her Indigenous roots to express the spirit of renewal. Her mural depicts the healing energy of water and how it transforms both the land and the lives of those who live on it. In keeping with this spirit, White Bird invited community members Mahogany Kowitch and her daughter Natasha Brownell to participate in creating the mural and benefit from the process. “I have been so blessed,” says the artist. “I wanted them to experience this, and I have space within here to share.” White Bird appreciates the project’s capacity to expand the horizons of art in the community.

At the same time, the RENEW Art Project pushes the parameters by extending the very breadth of styles and approaches involved in making murals. The geometric images created by Jonato Dalayoan are a case in point. “I started doing murals as a side hustle,” says the graphic designer and owner of 4TWO Design Inc. “It’s always been a passion of mine. It’s

awesome to be part of a group of such talented artists, to be so public and to have all these pieces in one place.”

Dalayoan’s bold style graces such Winnipeg landmarks as The Beer Can and the Gas Station Theatre. The Renew mural is his take on an abstract urban landscape. “I like to leave it up to the person to interpret my work,” he says. “My goal is always to attract people to art – from a five-year-old to a senior. If they can look at something I’ve done and be drawn to it, I’ve done my job.”

That ability to draw people into his work is something Cheney Lansard has on full display with a mural that captures the raw emotional intensity of just being alive. This project was an opportunity for his own artistic renewal and it shows. As onlookers stopped to see him work, the expression on the face looking out from the giant canvass continued to evolve. “It talks back to me,” says Lansard. And it’s obvious that the painting speaks to others as well.

Born of such diverse artists, styles, and ideas, the murals and their very public creation contribute to the cultural enrichment of the community while encompassing true Manitoba spirit. “Now is the time when we need art more than ever,” says van Leeuwen. “We need people to be celebrated for their diversity, and with such a diverse community all around us, why not do it right here?”

“Murals have the sole purpose of lifting others up,” she adds. “Art is a gift that offers endless ways to embrace our humanity.”

My partner and I always enjoy leafing through Style Manitoba for design ideas and your publication seldom disappoints! We’ve actually used some of the ideas presented in Outdoor Living for our own property, and were also inspired by your magazine for an upcoming indoor renovation we’re planning for next year. Beyond Style’s regular columns, the last few issues have been even more interesting with the coverage on what’s being filmed in Manitoba. We both loved the editorial on The Porter (featured in the spring issue), followed by SkyMed in the summer edition. In fact, we bingewatched both series. It was exciting to recognize certain filming locations used in the series. We’re hoping Style Manitoba continues covering the local film scene in upcoming issues.

What a lovely home featured on the cover of Style Manitoba’s summer issue! Bringing those beautiful kitchen cabinets up to the ceiling was a great idea, both from a storage perspective and aesthetically. Ladco has returned to north west Winnipeg with the launch of Highland Pointe, a new multiphase development off McPhillips Ave. Sited on 400 acres, Highland Pointe is an inclusive neighbourhood that will offer something for everyone.

“Initial servicing is complete, and our group of homebuilders has taken up the full slate of 250 lots in the first phase,” says Ladco’s Vice-president of Development, David Borger. He remarks that Highland Pointe will offer everything from luxury lake walkouts to townhomes and duplexes.

“There will be a wide range of offerings to fit numerous price points and family needs,” he says, commenting that Highland Pointe represents a return to the north for Ladco following their Garden Grove project in the 1980s.

Sales have been strong for new homes in Prairie Pointe since 2015, when the 640-acre, 2500+ lot development launched as an extension of the hugely popular South Pointe neighbourhood. Like South Pointe, the new development offers close-at-hand services and links to active transportation networks, as well as additional paths, transit and auto routes. Prairie Pointe’s green spaces include playgrounds, sports fields and retention ponds.

Located at the intersection of Waverley Street and Kenaston Blvd, this community is master planned by developer Ladco, and is now into Stage 6, with another 318 lots currently being serviced.

“Prairie Pointe has something for everyone,” suggests Ladco’s vicepresident of development David Borger. “This is an inclusive community where a full range of demographics from families to empty nesters to multi-generation households can find a solution to their new home needs. While there are lots of single-family detached homes, there are also duplexes, townhomes, condos and rentals that serve to add to the overall affordability of this highly desirable neighbourhood,” he says.

The community is approaching the halfway point of development, following seven years of growth in the 630acre neighbourhood.

In addition to the parks and linear pathways along the naturalized lakes, Ladco recently completed a new fiveacre park off Eaglewood Drive. In addition to 40-plus new singlefamily lots, Phase 5 of Oak Bluff West will include a 10-unit, bungalow-style condominium complex. It’s being designed by Randall Homes, which designed two other successful condo projects in the neighbourhood. While the new complex will share some interior elements with its predecessors, Randall Homes' vice-president Jason Jaquet says its exterior will have a completely different look.

“Whenever we do condo projects for Qualico, we’re always excited,” he says. “We push the envelope and they push back so that we come up with a great common ground for the exterior of the homes we’re building in their communities. It’s been a great working relationship.”

Phase 5 will also feature the first new wetland developed in Oak Bluff West since 2013. It will offer seating areas, shrubs, trees and a pathway that will connect to the existing trail network.

“I think one of the most important things in new communities is providing people a connected network to get out and walk,” says Mike Armstrong, operations manager for Qualico Communities.

“Not only does (this phase) offer lots that back onto this wetland that are very popular and attractive, but it also extends the walkability and connectiv-

ity of this neighbourhood, which is really cool.”

Armstrong says Qualico began creating wetlands in its communities about 20 years ago, before many municipalities began mandating them. While they enhance the natural appeal of a neighbourhood, wetlands are more than just a pretty place. It’s hard to believe seven years have passed since RidgeWood West began to take shape in Charleswood. The first new development in the area in decades, it promised to be a model for what a naturally beautiful neighbourhood could be.

Now entering its final phase of development, with fewer than 100 single-family lots still unspoken for, the community has come into its own, with a thoughtfully curated mix of housing options in a natural setting. Adjacent to the 6.5-kilometre Harte Trail and a short jaunt from the Assiniboine Forest, its constructed wetlands and native plants are an idyllic complement to the Prairie landscape.

“It’s become a great addition to Charleswood, and has provided people with an opportunity to build new homes and stay in Charleswood,” says Bryan Ward, vice-president of Qualico Communities. “I think it fits well with the community and is providing the variety of new homes that was envisioned from the beginning.”

In addition, Randall Homes is scheduled to begin work on a multifamily project in 2023, starting with 10 two-storey townhome units. Ranging from 1,350 to 1,536 square feet, each chic, modern unit will have its own detached garage. The second phase will consist of 12 side-by-side homes. Randall Homes' vice-president Jason Jaquet says they are designed to fit in seamlessly with existing homes in the community while still offering homebuyers a variety of unique designs to choose from.

“We don’t just mirror the one on the right with the one on the left.

Just because you own a side-by-side, it doesn’t mean you shouldn’t have a distinct identity with your home,” Jaquet says.

What’s so unexpected about Sage Creek?

For those who don’t venture to the southeast edge of the city often, they’re not sure what to expect when they find themselves in Sage Creek. New communities can be lumped into bad stereotypes with images of rows upon rows of uniform houses, one blending into the next.

Avisit to Taylor Farm in Headingley can feel a bit like taking a trip back in time.

While the streets are lined with beautiful modern homes, monuments to the community’s homestead past have pride of place. Three cairns pay tribute to Headingley School, Holy Trinity Cemetery and John Taylor, one of the original settlers. Another large masonry feature near Bridge Road pays homage to Taylor, and there are decorative nodes at key sites to share details of the area’s history.

“We are pretty proud of telling the story of the area along walkways and pathways in the subdivision and preserving that history. We’re trying to do that more and more in our subdivisions,” says Mike Armstrong, operations manager for Qualico Communities. That attention to historical detail is continuing as Phase 4 of development is now underway.

A new road being built to give Phase 4 homebuyers easy access to Portage Avenue will be called McGuckin Road, in honour of Malcolm and Ruby McGuckin, who emigrated from Northern Ireland in 1949 and settled in Headingley. They operated a mink ranch and later the RBM Gardens market. Their son, Roy McGuckin, built and still owns Thunder Rapids Amusement Park, north of the Assiniboine River.

Along with the road name, a striking brick-and-steel installation planned for the newest entranceway into the community will acknowledge the McGuckin family’s many contributions to the community.

“It’s a pretty neat honour,” says Roy McGuckin. “I think my dad would love it. He would love that he and my mom were remembered that way. I think it would be a huge honour for them both.”

While Qualico Communities embraces the history of Taylor Farm, it is also contributing to a bright future for modern homesteaders. Tara Reid, sales and development manager for Qualico Communities, says the latest phase of development will consist of 56 new lots, ranging from 64 to 90 feet wide.

It will also include three new wetland areas and a naturalized trail system that will connect to existing trails in the community.

A select number of lots will offer lake walkouts that back directly onto the wetlands. It’s the first time lake walkout lots have been made available in Taylor Farm, and Reid predicts that builders will be inspired to create designs specifically to take advantage of breathtaking views.

Taylor Farm’s natural beauty has been a draw from the start. It sits along the Assiniboine River, which offers a variety of recreational opportunities,

from canoeing in summer to skating and snowmobiling in winter. There’s also a five-acre mature basswood forest that is home to plants and animals not usually seen on the Prairies. With a lifespan of about 200 years, basswood trees are literally a deeply rooted part of Headingley’s history, and the forest is being preserved for generations to come.

“It’s breathtaking,” Armstrong says of the forest. “That’s an amenity that Taylor Farm has to offer that a lot of subdivisions don’t have.”

Sherwood Developments is raising the bar in 50+ apartment living with their new project, The Pearl at 250 and 260 River Road. Located on a choice multi-acre property set alongside the Red River in south Winnipeg, The Pearl will offer 128 refined one and two-

bedroom suites designed to enhance mature luxury forward lifestyles.

The first property at 250 River Road will open next summer. It's sister property at 260 River Road is coming in the summer of 2024.

“We started taking reservations last year,” says Louis Pereira, Co-President of Sherwood Developments (2016) Ltd. “We had a waiting list from our previous projects and were able to bring some of these people on board. There is also a demand from those who have been planning for retirement and see this development as a perfect opportunity to downsize while maintaining

amenities,” he adds, noting that the project is already 70 percent reserved.

Moving people from one development waiting list to another proved to be relatively easy, thanks to the considerable reputation Sherwood Developments has built over the years. Louis comments that it all started with his father Fausto Pereira, who launched a luxury condo development called The Waterfront in 2000. He followed this with The Excelsior in 2005, and then The Renaissance in St. Norbert in 2007 before switching to building for the rental market with a property called 86 Niakwa in 2011, followed by a 425-

unit residence on St. Mary Road (The Enclave).

Fausto retired in 2018, but his sons Jason and Louis have carried on the tradition with their first apartment rental, a 172-unit residence in Southdale (Vista 429), and now on their next development, The Pearl, a property they launched in 2020 with the acquisition of the stunning riverfront lot.

“A big part of our success is our breadth of experience and ability to deliver on quality and design,” says Louis. “We are an all-in-one builder. We do the land acquisition and design, and have our own equipment and crews. We do our own marketing and handle the property management of each building ourselves. My brother Jason, who owns 50 percent of the company, is on-site hammer in hand every day to oversee construction. For us, each project is like building our own homes, and this is what is helping to make The Pearl so appreciated in the local market.”

Beauty and comfort

At The Pearl, it all starts with the lot and location. The site is adjacent to the Red River on an ample property that offers 3.4 acres of well-landscaped green space beyond the residences.

“We placed 78 percent of the parking spaces below ground to maximize the potential for the park-like setting,” says Louis, noting that the location is close to services like St. Vital Shopping Centre and to facilities such as the University of Manitoba. It is on major bike routes, is close to transit and the proximity to Bishop Grandin means quick connectivity to routes to lake country.

The building itself is constructed with comfort in mind. Floors are solid concrete, and walls between suites have been doubled to ensure privacy and quiet. Insulation is extensive to create a building that is effortlessly warm in winter and cool in summer. In conjunction with state-of-the-art mechanical systems, The Pearl is projected to be 25 percent more energy efficient than code standard buildings. Even the parking garage design has been tailored to please with a grass-covered roof, and the building features ramps, entrance sidewalks and exit stairs that are heated to prevent winter slipping. This thinking extends to The Pearl's public areas, where designers stipulated textured noslip granite flooring amid the impressive hotel-style lobbies.

Active lifestyles are well supported at The Pearl. The grounds offer a 3.4acre park-like setting with numerous seating areas throughout the property. There are two on-site gyms, each featuring two treadmills, two ellipticals, two stationary bikes, a Universal weight machine, a rower and sets of free weights. Fitness rooms are fitted with banks of windows that allow for beautiful views while residents work out.

For those who want to gather friends and families without using their suites, The Pearl offers two 40-seat penthousestyle lounges that feature floor-toceiling windows, a full kitchen and a two-piece bathroom. The property even has two fully furnished bachelor-sized guest suites (complete with kitchenette) for visiting friends and family.

Suite attractions

Suites are available in one-bedroom, one-bedroom plus den, and two-bedroom (two bath) and two-bedroom plus den (two bath) configurations. There are a total of 13 floor plans from which to choose. Suites range in size from 800 square feet to 1407 square feet, with good availability now on offer.

Interiors are well appointed with contemporary design and the latest technology and comfort features. For example, kitchens boast white granite countertops (from KCD Quartz & Granite) and ceramic backsplashes, in addition to the latest stainless steel appliances like French-door fridges, slide-in stovetops with convection ovens, large capacity dishwashers, and over-the-range microwaves. Cabinets (from Cornerstone Kitchens) are Shakerstyle with soft close features on both drawers and doors. Lighting (from Total Lighting) is LED throughout, and dining rooms have full dimmable capability (Emerald, Gem & Diamond suites have a dimmable living room lighting feature). The Pearl’s luxury vinyl flooring dampens sound and comes with a sand maple finish that is on point with current design trends.

According to Pereira, the goal was to take The Pearl to higher design heights by building on its past successes. “We could see which amenities and design attributes excited our tenants and condo owners. We have sought to build these into every aspect of this new project,” he says, pointing to the bulkhead-free 9-foot ceiling height, the 9-foot oversized patio doors and the large awning windows with transom (from All Weather Windows).

The developers relied on strong longterm relationships with local suppliers, including McMunn & Yates, who supplied building materials for the project, KCD Quartz & Granite for countertops, Cornerstone Kitchens for cabinetry, Total Lighting for lighting products,

and All Weather Windows for windows, to name a few.

“We went with Kohler plumbing fixtures for their lasting quality and great appearance (brushed fingerprint resistant finishes). We also upped the ante with five-foot walk-in showers with glass doors in all the suites and placed five-foot soaker tubs in second bathrooms,” he notes.

Other key attributes of suites include comfort height toilets, ceiling-mounted heating and cooling vents with individual climate controls. There are also blackout roller blinds in bedrooms and fabric-clad vertical blinds for living rooms and patio doors.

Another important aspect of The Pearl is the selection of Easy Living suites. Fourteen units have been uniquely designed to include a host of extra amenities that provide residents with the option to age in place.

“We understand that as people grow older their needs change if they want to continue living an independent lifestyle. They may not wish to move to a new apartment or facility that can accommodate a wheelchair or offer accessible washroom and kitchen features. At The Pearl, we have taken this need to heart and have crafted these suites with the ability to be customizable at any date, so the appearance of the suite only changes when requested by the resident,” says Pereira.

“Our business model seeks a low turnover of tenants. To accomplish this, we are building properties where people can be happy where they live. For us, this means paying attention to the details and filling the property with all the extras that create not just added value, but pride of residence.”
