the agenda Our winter was actually bearable this year – much warmer than usual and a pleasant prelude to spring. Just as the new season lurks around the corner, many people will begin planning their moves to a new neighbourhood or contemplating home decorating, design and renovation projects. In fact, the mere thought of the warm weather ahead is enough to jumpstart your creativity, particularly when it comes to outdoor projects and landscaping plans. Those looking for a new home generally start their search this season, making the MHBA’s Spring 2010 Parade of Homes a timely event for Manitobans. Consistently evolving, this year’s event sees an even higher level of innovative design ideas and outstanding showhomes, demonstrating once again the remarkable level of talent in our homebuilding industry.
Add the annual Homes Expressions Show to your date book this month as well. Perfectly timed with the end of cocooning season, it is an excellent venue for researching creative landscaping, remodelling and decorating products and ideas. Whether scoping out the best kitchen, bathroom and renovation companies, or looking for clever products and innovations, it’s a wonderful source of inspiration. There’s something there for everyone. Style Manitoba’s spring edition also offers something for everyone. Our fabulous home story this issue, Polished Elegance, features a stellar design and superb finishing details, proving yet again the topnotch skill of our custom builders. Also well worth reading is It’s Better in the Backyard, Christine Hanlon’s coverage on how a pool can become the heart of the home. Speaking of the yard, our spring
issue would not be complete without a beautiful outdoor space to share with readers. Thankfully, Leigh Patterson leaves no stone unturned when it comes to her coverage of the appealing landscape design in All About the Details. Seniors seeking a new residence will appreciate Style’s excellent overview of Manitoba’s finest living centres and what they have to offer. On another note, A Clear Decision offers consumers a current view on the world of windows and what’s available locally, while Are You Floored Yet? gives the lowdown on the latest products. Yes – our first issue of 2010 is loaded from cover to cover with editorials of all kinds, including travel, dining out and so much more. Happy reading!

Your
Thoughts Excellent coverage on the WSO’s Alexander Mickelthwate in the Winter 2009 issue! I read the story while waiting at the doctor’s office recently, and was impressed with Style Manitoba in general. More than that, I am delighted that arts groups get the positive press they so richly deserve in such a well laid out magazine! - Cecilia Ramoris, Winnipeg Various of my business associates and I were very impressed with the well-presented article on Manitoba Hydro’s new downtown building in Style’s latest edition. It truly is a remarkable structure with many incredible features – a construction accomplishment that Manitobans should be extremely proud of. The environmentally conscious aspects of the building alone show what a marvellous construction feat Hydro’s new space really is. Kudos to the innovators responsible for putting Manitoba on the world stage! - Jeremy Owens, Winnipeg In today’s high waste society, it’s always refreshing to learn of new products recycled from old – like the new flooring featured in Real Hardwood for Real Life in your last issue of Style. Reclaiming old oak wine barrels to create unique flooring options for consumers is a wonderful idea that not only looks great, but also proves that big manufacturers might have an environmental conscience after all.

- Shirley McKinnon, Winnipeg Every time we get a new issue of Style Manitoba, I wonder what surprise will lie within its pages. In fact, my husband and I love flipping through the magazine each issue, as we find new decorating, design and furnishing ideas every time. Over the past five years, we’ve noticed how much more can be purchased in Manitoba than ever before. If not for the coverage your magazine provides, we wouldn’t know nearly as much about what’s available right here at home. Thanks for keeping local consumers informed. - Sarah Jamison, Winnipeg

Polished Elegance By Christine Hanlon Photography: Michael Roberts 8 | STYLE MANITOBA | spring 2010
Picking up the warm grey tones from the hand-scraped maple hardwood by Bill Knight Flooring, the drapery panel realized by Changes by Design combines contemporary pleats with a button detail.
Fine finishing details and a stellar design set this Parkhill showhome apart in Waverley West’s South Pointe. Like a work of haute couture, the design is perfectly proportioned. Just as the seams and detailing of a Christian Dior or Versace are flawlessly finished, so is every corner of this home. This is apparent even before entering the fabulous foyer. Stamped concrete, virtually indistinguishable from paving stones, leads up to the front covered landing framed with ledgestone pillars and glass railings. The front door itself is attractively surrounded by a bank of rectangular windows in various sizes. As with a tastefully sophisticated garment, a first glance is not enough to capture everything that works together to give this home its subtle polished elegance. The artistry is in such details as the beautiful tile border around the porcelain tiles in the front foyer. But it is also in the symmetry of the windows across the front landing, the balance between the spaces allotted for the great room, dining room and kitchen. Parkhill Homes knows how to use symmetry and subtlety to allow the bolder elements to shine. In the kitchen, for instance, the hood fan is hidden behind a valance so as not to compete with the superb stainless steel subway tile of the backsplash. For the cabinets, Kitchen Craft used a Berkeley door style with a hand rubbed weather slate stain. The island is in a contrasting Portobello stain that coordinates with the stainless steel of the Coast appliances.
In keeping with their focus on quality, the builder sourced the garage door from Reliable Overhead Door and turned to St. Mary’s Nursery for the landscaping.
A rounded profile gives greater prominence to the Hearth & Patio gas fireplace in the great room. spring 2010 | STYLE MANITOBA | 9

To match the island with the ceiling bulkhead, Kitchen Craft wrapped a 12-inch tube in a veneer skin. The colour scheme is only one aspect of the superb interior design by Fenwick & Co, with Lynne Fenwick selecting and designing all the finishing details to work with the builder’s vision. “The muted blue walls in the kitchen are a great match with the finish on the cabinets,” notes Lori Thorsteinson, coowner of Parkhill Homes with her husband Derek. Staking its own space but still part of an open concept, the kitchen is just the right distance from the dining room for easy serving. Defined by a bulkhead with potlights, the dining room is nonetheless open to the rest of the space making it possible to accommodate any size of table and a large number of guests. Meanwhile, the wet bar is strategically positioned to serve both the dining room and the great room. The raised counter in the kitchen also makes an ideal stand-up bar, extending the entertaining area from the great room and allowing guests
to socialize with hosts even as they are involved in food preparation. In fact, the layout of this entire area is roomy enough for entertaining, yet still a comfortable size for just two or three people. It takes both vision and experience to accomplish this feat. A Master Builder with 24 years of experience, Derek Thorsteinson has a firm grip on these two qualities. The ensuite is another fine example, with its mosaic backsplash and cabinetry display tower dividing the two rectangular sinks. Crown moulding gives the framed mirrors a truly finished look. The bathroom is across from the walk-in closet down a short hallway to the master suite. Both private and spacious, the bedroom includes a lounging area and a gas fireplace from Hearth and Patio. Two-tone drapery panels executed by Changes by Design draw from the warm palette of the
In the stainless steel backsplash, rectangular tiles are accented with square tiles turned 90º for a completely different sheen.

colour scheme. To the right of the fireplace, a door opens to the covered deck, also accessible from the kitchen and by an outdoor staircase from the yard below. In fact, the deck doubles as a roof for the patio that comes off the walkout lower level. Thanks to large windows from JeldWen, the lower level is just as bright as the main floor. Another element unifying the two spaces is the use of the same family of lighting fixtures throughout the entire home, including the lower level. Robinson Lighting supplied everything, from the wall sconces to the chandeliers to the pendant lights over the pool table in the lower level. Pot lights in various sizes complete the layers of lighting. Along with the surround sound throughout the home, having layers of lighting on separate switches will allow the future homeowners to create any ambience they desire. This combination is also ideal for the entertainment area, with its
built-in wall unit that provides ample room for audio-visual equipment.
A handsomely crafted pool table from Krevco Lifestyles is at home in this elegant setting.
Nearby, a bar rounds out the full range of amenities with a full-sized fridge, granite countertop, open display shelving and weather slate stained cabinetry to match with the rest of the home. A plush cream square-patterned Saxony from Bill Knight Flooring throughout the lower level keeps the entire area bright and warm. It is obvious that nothing has been forgotten or left unfinished. Parkhill Homes has paid meticulous attention to every corner of this elegant bungalow. For example, the cabinetry-clad post framing the bar is actually the top of a supporting telepost for the house. Yet, it simply seems a natural part of the design.
In the master bedroom, a bay window with units from Jeld-Wen, looks out onto the lake.
This only proves once again that it takes more than a glance to see what makes this home work so well. Visitors will want to take their time as they go through this Parkhill display home at 83 Autumnview in Waverley West’s South Pointe. It will be time well spent.
Tightly tailored leather seating from Dufresne completes the entertainment area.
Carrara Tile supplied the porcelain tile for the shower and heated floor, as well as a granite countertop with iridescent flecks. spring 2010 | STYLE MANITOBA | 13

Paradigm Shift For most of us, the path of least resistance is one that is travelled most frequently. Trevor Nott wants to show that when it comes to the car buying experience, the frequently travelled path is likely not the best road to quality, selection and value.
“We try to do things a little differently here at Nott Autocorp,” says company president and GM Trevor Nott. “We realize buying a car is really making a financial investment, and we understand that a car is typically a depreciating asset.” He explains that at Nott they consider the Long-term Total Cost of Driving (LTCD). “Our goal is to get our clients a car that both meets their needs and doesn’t empty their pocketbook when it’s time to remarket. We are all about obtaining the best ride for the best value. At Nott, we offer a new way to buy a car that lets people drive the car they want for as little money as possible,” says Nott.
“Would we advise selling you a brand new $55,000 Honda Pilot or Odyssey? At Nott Auto Corp we would rather locate a really nice nearly new Pilot or Odyssey that could be close to half the original sticker price. Let someone else pay that huge chunk of depreciation. This is called buying SMART. At Nott the advantage is that we try to sell SMART as well.”
How does this work? Step one - Clients are advised regarding vehicles that may be a better investment in terms of their current value and their resale value later. Nott explains that they generally purchase vehicles directly off lease from the manufacturer at a
true wholesale price. Further, the vehicle is fully inspected at auction before any money changes hands and is then inspected again (160 points) once Nott has it home in their service department to make it Nott Family Certified. “This is a level of comfort that gives us confidence in what we are selling,” he adds. Step Two - Nott then works with the client to establish the length of time they want to hold the vehicle. He suggests that this timeframe is typically 12 to 24 months. At that time they advertise the vehicle and sell it at a retail price to the public. “While we are listing your vehicle for sale, we are also actively sourcing a replacement ‘SMART’ vehicle at a wholesale cost. Our clients get retail for their trade through a consignment sale, and because the car was bought SMART initially, our clients are not getting stuck with paying for the depreciation. The result is a dramatically reduced price to drive a new and exciting car.”
Smart Economy According to Nott, the advantages represent a win/win scenario for all parties. Consider, he says, that as a dealership they know the vehicle is sold when we approach the auction house to buy it. “Here our costs such as interest and carrying charges are reduced. We also don’t need to advertise the car. As well, the vehicle doesn’t require continual clean-up after test drives because it is already sold,” he says, stating simply that the custom ordered car has less overhead attached to it, allowing them to sell it for less. “Also, because the first car a client bought from us was picked up at wholesale with resale value in mind and the trade cycle is so short, its depreciation is far less.” Really, the Nott experience is similar in some respects to a lease, except that there is greater control over the buy-out or re-trade value. “There are also no mileage restrictions, you won’t be locked into a contract for four to five years and stuck with a bunch of lease-end charges.” The best part, he says, is that there are no terms. “You can choose to sell or not to sell
anytime. And what really makes this work is having a boutique-style dealership that you can trust and guide you through the process.” Nott Autocorp is in its fourth year of business at the Lagimodiere Automall. They have grown and adapted through their fledgling years and have now expanded to offer a complete full service auto centre that includes Autocare and an Autosports division.
“We are working hard to change the way people look at buying cars altogether. We are doing this by offering real personal auto investment advice that ultimately enables our clients to drive more car for less money.” Is this style of dealership a paradigm shift? For a steadily growing slate of clients the answer is yes. For the staff at Nott Autocorp it is all in a day’s work. For more information, visit www.nottautocorp.com

Embraced by Assiniboine Park greenery in the famed Pavilion Building is Wow! Hospitality’s newest culinary hub: Terrace Fifty-Five Food and Wine. Approach by way of Portage, and you’ll enjoy strolling the river bridge, basking in open sky and admiring the Pavilion’s early English design. The horizon looks even brighter with Terrace Fifty-Five’s menu - showcasing local ingredients and Canadian fish and seafood. Seated beneath the dining room’s stunning glass ceiling, we toast two summery cocktails: Sea Breeze and Tootsie Rio. The pink and lightly pulped Sea Breeze stirs together quenching grapefruit and cranberry juices with smooth Banff Ice Vodka. And a Tootsie Rio is a clean sip of bubbly Sprite and cranberry juice spiked with thick crème de cacao and tequila. For appetizers, Lobster & Shrimp Corn Dogs astonish. These guilty pleasures see fried cornbread batter coat a puree of lobster and shrimp. Served up with truffle oil-infused ketchup along with Cajun and Ballpark mustards, these dogs put a posh accent on the poor man’s pogo. Another marvel is the Wild Mushroom Tart. This layered affair is part salad and part pie with crisp lettuce, fresh tomato and herby goat cheese dollops piled high on flaky puff pastry. Entrées see a marriage of regional ingredients and classic recipes. Leek and Goat Cheese Crepe is a satisfying vegetarian dish. Mingling with soft fingerling potatoes and lazy leaves of wilted spinach, fluffy crepe folds sandwich leeks smothered in goat cheese. A classic orange juice and vodka Screwdriver cocktail brings mellow tang. The Deja Vu pasta bowl prompts a double take with its seafood treasury – shrimp, salmon, scallops, and the plumpest mussels I have ever tasted. A favourite of our attentive servers, the Déjà vu’s ocean bounty exotically tumbles in bands of black squid ink linguine lathered in a rich chili lime butter sauce. Wafts of smoke tickle the palate thanks to draughts of 2006 Smoking Loon Merlot. This dark garnet-hued Californian varietal, heavy with herby aroma and notes of blackberry and light oak, pairs sumptuously with the pasta. To finish, frothy cappuccinos and ... deception! Chocolate Raspberry Deception, that is. This moist chocolate beet cake is dabbed with cream and surrounded by a saucy beet-infused pool of raspberry and vanilla. Garnished with a candied beet chip, this clever Deception lets you have your veggies and eat your cake too!

Authentic Tapas Experience The flag of Spanish cookery flies high in Osborne Village thanks to Segovia, the hottest stronghold for an authentic tapas experience. Cocktails are swift in Segovia’s bustling uptown digs. A Buenos Dias martini layers whipped Bailey’s Irish Cream upon a frisky shake of vodka, espresso and Kahlua. And Sangria will pour by the pitcher all summer long with its quenching blood-red blend of crème de cassis, cinnamon, strawberry and lemon. Crafted for sharing, Chef Adam Donnelly’s inventive small dishes capture the best of European taste and tradition. Nibbling on smooth Marcona almonds, we munch the likes of Salted Cods Croquetas and Patatas Bravas. Croquetas are golden fried and plunged into a Romesco sauce of roasted red pepper and almond. And Patatas are as dreamy as poutine, piling slices of fried potato drizzled with creamy aioli and spicy sauce.
BEFORE
From “Charcuterie & Cheese,” we carve into the Three Manchego Cheese. This rustic board is decked out with aged sheep’s milk cheese accented with raisins, crackers, and tangy dense quince preserve. Roasted Quail and Lamb Stuffed Piquillo Peppers showcase Segovia’s meatier side. Quail soaks in an orange gastrique swimming with ham bits, black beans and fleshy fig. So luscious is this fowl we abandon forks for hands-on degustation. Meanwhile, sweet roasted Piquillo peppers embrace juicy morsels of lamb and are immersed in chunky corn and bean succotash. Vegetarians will rejoice with the vibrant Beetroot salad – elegantly adorned with whipped goat cheese dollops and pine nut scatterings.
...AFTER
Our server bubbles over “Cava” – Spanish sparkling wine. A flute of Segura Viudas Brut Reserva offers sips alive with apple, spice and minerals. And a sultry glass of red 2006 Tempranillo vintage – Domino Dostares Estay Castilla Y Leon – splashes velvety on the tongue, smells of leather, and tastes of blackberry. For dessert, a tidy pink scoop of rhubarb ice cream crowns sugar encrusted Rice Pudding Brulée. And truffle-like Dark Chocolate Torte sees dense dry cake moistened with exotic Cardamom Ice Cream and bristled with crunchy Pine Nut Brittle shards.

Exceptional French Quarter Dining Want an out of the ordinary dining experience? If so – say yes to Beaujena’s French Table. After being seated and deciding upon either a five or seven-course French/Mediterranean themed dinner, you needn’t worry about anything except conversation. Beaujena’s teases the sommelier within us all by way of a flight of premium wines, but the cocktail list also intrigues. An aperitif! A fittingly French glass of Kir. Made with crème de cassis black currant liquor and topped with white wine, the ruby red Kir is a syrupy treat. And a martini concocted by Madame Beaujena herself is a purple shake of red wine, vodka, triple sec and tart pomegranate juice that drinks clean and juicy. Sipping thus, the restaurant’s drapery, soft lighting and fresh flowers ensconce us as we anticipate our surprise five courses. First up: bites of fruit-topped pâté en terrine. Presented on soft grainy crackers, these pâtés range from chicken with diced apple, to wild boar and elk with blueberry, to turkey with zesty orange. Nutrient-rich and chilled, the fowls sport mild flavour and velvety texture while the hunter meats are bold and exotic. Second is a delicate bowl of Roasted Butternut Squash Soup. Flecked with crunchy fresh green onion, this silky heart-warming soup is tangy and tinged with a touch of smoke. In preparation for the Third, wines are uncorked. The white - a California House Chenin Blanc - is a crisp semi-sweet vintage, blooming with floral flavours and a grassy bouquet of honey and melon. And herbaceous raspberry fills the mouth with French Georges Duboef Beaujelais Villages, a medium-bodied red. Poached Salmon Fillet pairs perfectly. Moist and fleshy, the fish is smothered with a striking citrus cream sauce and rests upon lightly dressed fresh herb pasta. The Fourth is the meal’s meat – medallions of firm Veal Scallopini in a sweet Marsala sauce reduction of drippings and red Italian wine. Accompanied by scalloped potato and ginger candied carrots, the apex sates with its comforting palate. And the Fifth’s the finale. Chef Randy Reynolds emerges offering classic chocolate cake. This flourless brownie-like delight is crowded with hazelnuts and drenched with thick cinnamon brandy sauce.

Immunocal® helps to maintain the body’s natural defenses against disease, environmental challenges and the signs of aging. But don’t just take our word for it…
“
Glutathione is of major significance in cellular antioxidant activity, and that Immunocal functioning as a delivery system can enhance glutathione synthesis…
”
Dr. Luc Montagnier, winner of the 2008 Nobel Prize in Medicine for his discovery of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) with Françoise Barré-Sinoussi in 1983.
The key to a longer, healthier life Until recently, the medical world has focused on treating the symptoms of illness with surgery and prescription drugs. Immunotec Inc. has turned this type of thinking upside down, by discovering the only natural product on the planet that safely and effectively elevates and optimizes your own immune system. Canadian researchers have patented a way to deliver glutathione to the body in the form of a natural milk protein supplement called Immunocal®, which is an immune system booster proven in clinical trials and real life use for over 12 years. Immunocal is approved by Health Canada to claim that it is “a natural source of the glutathione precursor cysteine for the maintenance of a strong immune system.”
Q: What is Immunocal? A: Immunocal is a patented nutritional supplement that is over 90 percent pure protein and has a biological value higher than any other protein supplement or food available. The term “biological value” (BV) is a ranking of important edible proteins in your body. Taken daily, Immunocal will raise your body’s concentration of glutathione, a molecule referred to as “your body’s most important protector.”
Q: How does Immunocal affect the immune system? A: Immunocal supports and maintains a healthy immune system by providing building blocks our body needs to produce glutathione, which acts as a powerful antioxidant, a key protector against all types of pollution and which is effective in helping to prevent the signs of aging.
Q: Who are the scientists behind Immunocal? A: Dr. Gustavo Bounous pioneered the use of denatured milk concentrate that helps to sustain glutathione levels, and ultimately, a strong immune system. Dr. Bounous developed the method for the production of undenatured whey protein. Dr. Wulf Dröge was the first to describe the effect of glutathione on the immune response of a living organism (1986) and to discover the abnormally low cysteine and glutathione levels in HIV patients (1988/1989). Dr. Patricia Kongshavn, the principal collaborator in this research program, worked as a professor of physiology and immunology at McGill University in the Department of Medicine.
For more information on how you can experience optimal health with a strong immune system, call 1-877-267-2954 or 1-204-453-1166 today!

Q: Who should take Immunocal? A: Anyone who wants to maintain a healthy immune system, and of course anyone who has weakened immune function. Immunocal is sold through a network of independent consultants, visit us at www.immunocal.com/611.
Expectation is the leading cause of disappointment Tips from Dr. Darek Dawda of DAVDA Psychology* By Mathilda Waters
Having conflicting emotions is not only a normal but also valuable part of life, according to our expert psychologist, Dr. Dawda of DAVDA Psychology.*
MW: I am frustrated with one of my friends, who, as far as I can see, has everything one might need in life, yet constantly complains it’s not enough. Any advice for him? Dr. DD: It might be useful to tell your friend that expectation is the leading cause of disappointment. Ask your friend to make this sentence his mantra. It is the most obvious thing to say, but if we did not have expectations, we would not be dissatisfied. MW: Sounds good, but my friend would tell you his expectations are reasonable. Dr. DD: If in fact they are reasonable, maybe he is not doing enough to realize his expectations; hence the disappointment. Alternatively, maybe he does expect too much. MW: So essentially you are saying that expectations are in the eye of the beholder? Dr. DD: Absolutely. Expectations arise when we believe that our needs should be met. The greater we perceive our needs to be, the more inflated our expectations become. MW: OK. Why does he expect so much? Dr. DD: Expectations are created in many different ways. Your friend might simply be prone to seeing the cup half empty. Did he always get his way growing up? If we grow up having our every whim instantly gratified, life’s inevitable limitations will be very difficult to bear. On a broader scale, our entire consumerist culture artificially raises the bar on our expectations, creating a general sense of emptiness to be filled with ever-new products and lifestyles. Without expanding expectations, the bubble of our consumerist economy could not expand.
MW: So, is the solution to get rid of expectations? Dr. DD: Of course it is unreasonable to propose that we eliminate expectations altogether. If you wake up without expectations, it probably means you are dead, or more likely that you are very depressed. Expectations drive all our actions. MW: So how do you strike a balance? Dr. DD: There is always a discrepancy between what psychologists call the Actual Self and the Ideal Self. This discrepancy is a good thing that drives us to creativity, achievement and growth. The problem is when this discrepancy becomes too large. When it does, two things happen. Emotionally, you live in a constant state of tension between what you have and what you want. And behaviourally, you get paralyzed by this tension, and become less capable of doing what you need to do to. Perfectionists are notorious for procrastination and inability to complete tasks. MW: So the solution would be? Dr. DD: The solution is to curb your expectations down, and to stop demanding so much of yourself and others. Drag the perfectionist out of you into the open, and don’t let it control your thoughts and actions. Instead, practice gratitude, and be compassionate towards yourself and others. We are all imperfect creatures living in an imperfect world. At the same time, remember that life wants to expand in you. So keep your healthy expectations alive. Ryann Doucette was hooked on Moksha Yoga after her first class, because she quickly began to enjoy its many benefits, including flexibility, muscle strength and endurance, better sleep and less stress. Doucette and her husband, Phil, are passionate about the positive impact it can have, and want to share that experience with Winnipeggers. As co-owners and directors of Moksha Yoga Winnipeg (MYW), they’re thrilled to see the popularity growing. “It’s really interesting to see the mix of people, like a young hockey player in a class with his Grandma – they’re both getting the same benefit, but working at their own ability and pace,” says Ryann. It’s not unusual, she adds, for people to come looking for help for one thing, and leave with improved skill or ability in another area. For example, hockey players may come to improve their balance and become more aware of their body movement and therefore prevent injuries. Runners may come to stretch their hamstrings and develop better breathing techniques. Those who suffer from back pain can also find relief. Moksha Yoga, which is a set series of 40 postures, was designed by two people in Toronto to alleviate back pain – one suffered from Scoliosis and the other from chronic lower back pain.
Something for Everyone
MYW has introduced online signin to reduce congestion. They’ve also purposely staggered class times so that if you can’t get in to one class, you can take a 10-minute drive to their other location. That leads to their commitment to make yoga accessible to all. The Doucettes built their two Moksha Yoga locations (7-2 Donald Street and 1090 Waverley Street) with three fundamental pillars in mind: Accessible to everyone: There are at least 100 classes available between both locations with prices to suit any budget. Beginners can choose an introductory one-week pass for $20 or one-month pass for $40. Passes and drop-in fees for regulars are also incredibly reasonable. Supporting the environment: The facility itself is about as green as it can get. The hot yoga studios are heated with radiant heat, the flooring is cork, the countertops are reclaimed concrete, and they only use non-toxic cleaning products. The café on Waverley uses compostable products, which allows it to boast about near zero waste.
“It’s about mindfully opening hips and spine properly without injuring yourself,” explains Ryan.
Commitment to the community: Moksha Karma is a 90-minute class that’s run on minimum $5 donations with all proceeds donated to local charities. In the last three years, they’ve donated $60,000 to charities. The majority of them are local, such as Siloam Mission or Challenge for Life, but some such as Free the Children, or Red Cross relief for Haiti are more global in their reach.
Regardless of the reason, it’s obvious Winnipeggers are addicted. Classes are so well attended that
“It’s the best thing ever,” sums up Ryann. “All I can say is you have to try it!”

g n i k l Wa the Talk Fresh I.E., Winnipeg’s best-known rapper, uses his talent and influence to give youth a voice.
It’s the day after the 2010 Grammy’s and rapper Fresh I.E. is talking about his favourite moments. “Did you see the Michael Jackson tribute? That was the best.” It wasn’t long ago that the Winnipegger found himself in the audience at the music awards in the presence of MJ’s dad, Joe Jackson, who didn’t do much to dispel the rumours about his notorious mean streak, as Fresh recalls. But Fresh, whose real name is Rob Wilson, didn’t have time to focus on Jackson then. As the first Canadian Christian artist nominated for a Grammy (His Red Letterz CD was up for Best Rock Gospel Album in 2004), his stomach was turning and he was too nervous to enjoy the experience. (He was also nominated in 2006 for Truth Is Fallin’ In Tha Streetz.) “It took me back watching the Grammy’s,” says the 36-year-old. “I was pointing out where my wife and I were sitting. We were right up front. I told her that we will go next year, even if I’m not nominated.” He didn’t win the award either time, which led him to question why his Maker brought him there only to lose. But he says he now realizes it was the beginning of a long and humble search to discover his real calling. And it was also the spark that ignited the idea for a new documentary about his life, Beyond the Beat, which premiered at the IMAX Theatre in January 2009. Fans can check it out for free on MTS Winnipeg on Demand. Local documentarian Leona Krahn was fascinated with the rapper’s 180-degree
transformation, and how he traded in a life of drugs and prostitution for one filled with divine intervention and youth groups. It was two weeks before the 2006 Grammy’s and she knew she had to be there to start filming. She convinced Wilson to let her tag along, and so with no financial backers, she cashed in reward points to catch a flight to L.A. For the next year, Krahn and her small crew followed Winnipeg’s best-known rapper, and watched him use his talent and influence to give youth a voice. “I would like viewers to get a sense of hope, and that life can turn around no matter what obstacles you face,” she says. “There are scenes that will make you cry, laugh, and have you in disbelief that things like that happen,” adds Wilson, who has received death threats for venturing into well-known gang territory in an effort to reach out to misguided youth. But that hasn’t stopped him -- in March, he’ll make a trek to Nunavut to help settle a longstanding gang war. He hopes the fact that he’s walked the talk, so to speak, will give him street cred to reach young people who really aren’t much different than him - Grammy nomination or not. “These kids are looking for their own identity. They don’t have a voice – I want to give them a voice,” says Wilson, who’s now an ordained minister and runs the Joshua House drop-in centre and Education Direction Inspiration for Youth (EDIFY) mentorship program at the Waves of Glory Church on Furby Street. And that’s the biggest lesson viewers will learn from the documentary. More than anything, it shows Wilson’s unwavering commitment to his faith. He’s deeply religious, and as the new tattoo on his forearm confirms, is unashamed of his beliefs. There’s no doubt in his mind that divine intervention helped him turn his life around. Wilson was heavily involved in drugs and crime, did a 14-year stint in prison, and there are still some parts of his life he’d like to remain hidden. He was looking for a reason to change,
and found it on his way home from a liquor store on Main and Selkirk one night, when he saved a blind man from being hit by a car. When he later found the blind man sleeping on his front step, he says he thought he was going crazy. “Two weeks later, God spoke to me and said ‘that blind man was you – you’re walking through life blind.’” From that day on, his desire to swear, drink or do drugs was gone; it was replaced by a stronger wish to mentor young people and encourage them not to follow in his footsteps. After years of his own brand of preaching, it seems to slowly be working. One of the most powerful scenes in the documentary takes place in Wilson’s old neighbourhood, Gilbert Park. He returns with a couple of his protégés, the Lil Disciples, to give a concert. “You get the sense his performance was one of the more positive events to happen in this troubled community and for the youth that live there in quite a while,” says Krahn. “You can see the impact he has on these kids, and how he inspires them to think ahead and think big.” For Wilson himself, that could mean another trip to the Grammy’s next year as a nominee. He’s preparing the release of a new CD in March that’s rock with hip hop, jazz and even a bit of country. “It’s not about the awards,” he confesses. “I use my music to get through to young people who struggle with the same things I struggled with. They’re just looking for an identity. They don’t have a voice, but I’m giving them a voice.” spring 2010 | STYLE MANITOBA | 33

Bookshelf Slumdog Millionaire was based on a novel by Vikas Swarup. (Except he called it Q&A). His new book, Six Suspects (Harper Collins), is a big, fat mystery with lots of red herrings, or maybe patrani machhi. An unlikable playboy is acquitted of murder and throws a party to celebrate but a bullet or two means he doesn’t enjoy his freedom long. There are half a dozen suspects, a disparate mix including the deceased’s own father. Our guide is a muckraking columnist who takes us from Bollywood to a Delhi slum, with detours to the Andaman Islands and Texas, while shining a light on Indian politics and society. A smart, satisfying read.

The Truth About Love (Harper Collins) by Irish novelist Josephine Hart is a gentle novel about ungentle things. It’s the 1960s and the setting is rural Ireland. A teenage boy is killed in an accidental explosion. (His heartbreaking last words: “Turn me over quickly. Don’t let Mama see me. Mama mustn’t see me like this.”) Told through the words of the boy’s sister, mother, and friend - a German immigrant with his own sad story - this is a tale of loss, history and love. Of course, Eire witnessed much in the way of explosions and violent death in the coming decades, a connection Hart makes clear in an extended coda to the novel. Who can resist baby animals? Certainly not Lil Anderson, wildlife technician for Ontario’s Ministry of Natural Resources and operator of a wildlife rehab centre in the Kenora area along with her husband. She’s also the author of Pond Memories: More Tales from a Wildlife Rehabilitator (Turnstone Press). Anderson writes amusing, delightful tales of raising baby moose, deer, beaver, geese, fox and even a porcupine. There’s joy and laughter, as well as a reunion or two, but Anderson never neglects the heartbreak and cruelty of nature. This is a book for any animal lover. With photographs and ridiculously cute drawings.

By Randal McIlroy Jan Garbarek Dresden (ECM/Universal)
While saxophonist Jan Garbarek’s work in the past two decades found him working on simpler, folkloric music (albeit one increasingly dependent on his sequenced keyboards and drum machines) that drifted all too close to New Age piety, it never left him completely becalmed; surging moments of tenor saxophone authority were a reminder that, circa 1970, the young Norwegian was a ferocious player with a sound to worry the stoutest concrete. He’s not that young lion now, but the live double, Dresden, honours the man in rude health in the vital company of redoubtable old mates Rainer Bruninghaus (keyboards) and Manu Katché (drums), along with resourceful fretless bassist Yuri Daniel. The music in these two concert suites is punchy, curvaceous and surprising, with roiling rhythms cutting back smartly for solo moments, including the leader’s soprano soliloquy in “Twelve Moons.” Eyes and ears open even wider in the last stretch, with “Maracuja” reveling in the electric piano grooves of early jazz-rock a la Passport before the band embraces Spanish passion in “Voy Cantando.” King Crimson In the Court of the Crimson King – 40th Anniversary Edition (Discipline Global Mobile) For some of us, the collectors’ jibe about fanatic completists buying their favourite old records again and again seems less a joke with every new special edition. Here, at least, is a revival that does its work with passion and dignity. King Crimson’s 1969 debut blew wide the early perceptions of what was becoming known as progressive rock. The title track and “Epitaph” were grand in their gloom, “21st Century Schizoid Man” was ferocious in its virtuosity, and “I Talk to the Wind” proved they could play pretty when they wanted. Guitarist Robert Fripp has returned to this set several times, in part to exhume details obscured in overdubbing. The 2009 remastering by Fripp and Steven Wilson hits harder, with Ian McDonald’s multiple instruments benefiting especially. The double version includes the 2004 edition along with marginalia and a few treats, including a hitherto lost BBC take of “Schizoid Man.” Even more elaborate packages are available. Jon Balke/Amina Alaoui Siwan (ECM/Universal) The deep and quietly ravishing music of Siwan began as a project to explore baroque improvisation in the context of its modern flowerings. The meeting of Norwegian keyboardist/composer Jon Balke and Moroccan singer Amina Alaoui led beyond that to the Gharnati music of Muslim Iberia, from an era (730 to 1492) when Arabic and European music and poetry mingled. The gauzy result, set on new music for period texts, crosses not only cultures but also time, with sinuous Arabic violin playing and Jon Hassell’s unmistakable electrified trumpet contributing as much as the baroque orchestra to a world revived. Alaoui’s singing is lovely and honest; the Spanish mystical poetry of “Toda ciencia trascendiendo” is a siren call across the centuries.

New Playpark for Children at Forks National Historic Site By Aileen Goos Bérard
Six thousand years ago, children played on the banks at the forks of the Red and Assiniboine Rivers. Now - Variety, the Children’s Charity and Parks Canada - want history to repeat itself. Wayne Rogers, Executive Director of Variety, is partnering with Parks Canada to create the Variety Heritage Adventure Park at the Forks National Historic Site, which will be located on a beautiful greenspace just northeast of the Manitoba Children’s Museum. “It’s going to be spectacular,” he says. “It will be fun, educational and interactive - we want children to use their imaginations. And best all, the park will be accessible to children of all abilities.” The plan is to break ground this spring, with an anticipated completion date later this year. Covering half the size of a professional football field, the 50 x 55 metre space will be open year-round and include one-of-a-kind play structures primarily for children two to 12 year old.
The playpark site was secured after Rogers had a conversation with Ida Albo, who as a Centre Venture board member, was involved with the groups’ efforts to revitalize city parks. She asked Rogers if Variety would be interested in The Forks National Historic Site as a potential location for a playground. At that point, Variety was introduced to Parks Canada, and it didn’t take long for the wheels to start turning. The park will pay homage to Manitoba’s rich culture and history. Design plans call for play zones featuring a First Nations settlement that will include a 22-foot tall tipi and a fort with a trading post. There will also be a play zone recognizing the Metis community including a depiction of the river lot system and a Red River cart play structure. Other park structures will feature replicas of a paddlewheel boat, freighter canoes and a York boat, and facades depicting the French Quarter of St Boniface and the city’s rail history. “We want to make sure that we’re portraying everything correctly,” says Rogers, who notes that focus groups were held with a wide range of participants, including First Nations and Metis representatives, educators, children and new Canadians. There will also be a water spray park, picnic area and a small performance area with seating for approximately 40 to 50 people, where Parks Canada, Manitoba Theatre for Young People, the International Children’s Festival and other groups will be able to stage interpretative programs. In the winter, a small section will be flooded and used for parents to safely teach their little ones how to skate. The Manitoba Moose
40 | STYLE MANITOBA | spring 2010
Yearling Foundation, one of the key donors to the project, is planning to host an annual event at the park where members of the Moose will meet and greet children and teach them how to skate. It’s important, says Rogers, for the activities to be all-inclusive so that all children, including those with various challenges, can learn and play together in the same environment. Safety is obviously paramount, and the design team has taken every issue into consideration – the majority of play areas will be developed to include safe rubberized surfaces, and the structures will be low to the ground so that children can safely climb aboard and explore. “One of the cutest comments came from an eight-year-old boy who said he thought we should name it the Variety Hostage Park instead, because he said he’d never want to leave!” laughs Rogers. Variety was established in Manitoba in 1978, and through that time has raised in excess of $24 million to meet the tangible needs of children of all abilities throughout the province. Variety is about to begin a grassroots fundraising campaign to give everyone an opportunity to contribute to the VHAP and be a part of history. “I think we are creating something very special here,” says Rogers. “It’s a place where all children and children at heart, can learn, play and have fun.” To make a donation or for further information, contact Variety at 1-204-982-1050 or visit the website at: www.varietymanitoba.com
Gwen Repeta remembers sitting on the floor of a Ugandan home made out of clay bricks. The homeowner, Dorothy, was a single mother of four who used the money she made selling her handmade raffia baskets to build the home, brick by brick. It’s one of the many stories Repeta, manager of Ten Thousand Villages in Fort Garry, can share as an example of how Fair Trade changes the lives of artisans in developing countries. It’s that hand-up, not handout attitude that the people of Haiti can use now, as they try to get back on their feet after the devastating earthquake in January. And Ten Thousand Villages is front and centre of the relief efforts through the sale of Haitian Fair Trade artwork, and by collecting donations for their parent organization, the Mennonite Central Committee (MCC). MCC has committed an initial $103,420 for immediate needs, such as food, water filters, tents, tarps, blankets, sheets and medical items; and an anticipated response of at least $1.03 million over multiple years for medium and long-term plans that are currently in development. “They have lost their homes, their tools; we need to be there for them,” says Repeta, who adds that she’s been in touch with the Director of Comité Artisanal Haitien (CAH) who has assured her that most of the artisans whose work they sell live outside of the worst hit areas and are alive. CAH is a non-profit marketing cooperative that represents more than 800 Haitian artisans in 170 workshops who create stunning cut metal art, river rock sculptures, carved wood crafts, and more. Those works of art eventually find their way to Fair Trade-inspired stores like Ten Thousand Villages, which has now dedicated its storefront at 134 Plaza Drive to Haitian-made items. “It’s not just about the money. It’s about building long-term relationships that provide an income for these people to pay for housing, education and medical supplies.” Repeta says these items were popular before the quake brought attention to the area. But these days, she’s having trouble keeping items in stock. Socially minded consumers are picking up some traditional pieces made out of cut metal oil drums, palm leaves and river rock. Artwork includes Children of the World and Tree of Life cut metal wall hangings, river rock motherand-child statues and heart-shaped paperweights, and Obeechi Wood divided bowls. They are handmade items crafted by people like Jhonson Augustin. At 11 years
Hand-up for Haiti old, his father walked out on the family, leaving Augustin to care for his 11 siblings. He apprenticed with a master metal cutter and learned how to fashion old metal oil drums into inspiring pieces of art. Now he’s not only helping his family, he’s also helping to teach other young Haitian apprentices. The workshop supports more than 50 families, who will rely on this type of income even more as the nation rebuilds.
Distress before the storm
Even before the quake, Haiti had its share of challenges. Decades of deforestation, natural disasters and political turmoil contributed to an unstable economy. Although education is technically compulsory in Haiti, explains Repeta, only about 40 percent of children can actually afford to go to school. Product sales through Ten Thousand Villages help make schooling possible. But it doesn’t end there. Repeta, who has been on learning tours in Kenya, Uganda and Pakistan and hopes to one day visit Haiti, explains that Ten Thousand Villages creates long-term partnerships with the people in these villages. These partnerships go far beyond placing orders and selling product, to working with locals to offer AIDS testing, organize youth activities and women’s support groups. Making substantial change takes time, she notes. And it also takes a fair amount of awareness and education on the part of the consumer. It’s become a topic of conversation in schools, and Repeta, who is occasionally asked to speak at schools, says children are becoming more familiar with the concept and influencing their parents’ choices.
By Aileen Goos Bérard
“People want to know the story behind the products, so it becomes more than a napkin or a notebook,” she explains. “I encourage people to try buying Fair Trade products first in an effort to give developing countries a chance to become self-sufficient.” Repeta has seen firsthand how powerful the transformation can be. She remembers walking through a village with streets lined in huts. The school, which was sandwiched between the slums and the garbage dump, offered children one meal a day. For some, it’s likely their only meal. “The feelings of helplessness were overwhelming,” Repeta recalls. But then she met Joseph, a jeweller, who went from those slums to a three-storey home by selling homemade jewellery. She also met a remarkable and determined mother who put her daughter through school by selling dried fish. “It helps put things into perspective,” remarks Repeta, who estimates it will take a couple of years for the people of Haiti to get back on their feet. “We probably won’t see a lot of pieces from that area as they try to rebuild,” she adds. “But it’s important for them to know that they will have an income so that they can focus on the bigger issues, like housing, education and healthcare rather than wondering where they’re going to get their next meal.”
There are many ways to support Haitian relief efforts. If you’d like to participate in the Mennonite Central Committee’s plan, call 1-888-622-6337 or visit www.Donate.MCC.org

Their newest living centre — the Seine River Retirement Residence — is located on the banks of the Seine River in a prime location at the corner of St. Anne’s Road and Warde Avenue in Winnipeg, complete with sprawling lawns, scenic views and a serene environment. Thoughtfully designed and styled, the Seine River Retirement Residence offers 168 firstclass accommodations in a variety of suite layouts, plus a full range of services intended to create a stimulating, creative and active community-based lifestyle for residents and their guests. These include a small theatre, a spa, workout gym, health and wellness centre, and an Internet lounge - modern amenities to support the needs of today’s most discerning and active seniors. “Seine River Retirement Residence is a vibrant and active place to live a healthy life,” says marketing director Bruce Lillie. “Seine River opened in September 2009, and has been well-received ever since. This residence offers beautiful accommodations.” Caring is the number one concern, and various levels of assistance are available to residents depending on their needs. As an All Seniors Care Living Centres development, the Seine River Retirement Residence will exhibit the same high quality features, services and furnishings that are hallmarks of their commitment to excellence in providing gracious, retirement living. The suites are comfortable and spacious, with kitchenettes, four-piece ensuite bathrooms, climate controls, and connections for phone, cable and Internet. There is weekly housekeeping, with linen and towel service, laundry facilities on each floor, plus dry cleaning pickup and delivery. “Small pets are welcome, so you can have a dog or a cat or a bird to keep you company,” says Lillie. “There’s a beautiful central courtyard with gardens and a deck under a pergola.
Seine River Retirement Residence encourages active and vibrant seniors People come live here, and they find their health and nutrition improving, thanks to the cuisine cooked by our wonderful chefs.” The beautiful common areas are often likened to those on board a cruise ship. The building features a main floor Bistro coffee lounge with a fireplace and grand piano. There is a library, movie theatre, beauty salon and barbershop, a chapel, tuck shop and more. The building is secure, with staff on-site 24 hours a day. A nurse is on staff, and there is an emergency call system in all suites. Each of the suites also has safety features in the bathrooms, non-slip floors and grab rails, and heat and smoke detectors. Suites are wheelchair accessible, and tenant parking is available. In terms of activities, the full-time director of health and wellness provides a calendar of games, exercise classes, hobbies and outings. There is a billiards room, hobby and crafts rooms, along with a dedicated shuttle bus for shopping and other trips. The Seine River residents recently took part in the All Seniors Care Living Centres Senior Games, held from Jan. 25 to 29 at all 12 centres across Canada. The Games featured opening and closing ceremonies, five days of events, medal presentations, guest appearances by local dignitaries, and best of all, inspiring performances from the competitors, some of whom were getting active for the first time.

Beautifully Renovated Residence By Aileen Goos Bérard It’s been a home renovation like no other that the residents of the Portsmouth Retirement Residence have ever seen - and on March 18th, the doors to the newly renovated seniors’ complex will be open to the public. From 3:00 to 7:00 pm, guests are invited to attend a ribbon-cutting ceremony with Mayor Sam Katz, enjoy refreshments, entertainment and door prizes, and enjoy a tour of the beautifully renovated residence. “We’re really excited about showing off our renovations,” says Executive Director Patti Ferguson. “Everything looks fresh, and I think the renovation experience helped to create a stronger community atmosphere here – it was like doing a home reno and we were all in it together.” It would appear that residents are excited to show off their new digs to friends and family, too. Since construction started last summer, they have been giving their visitors tours of the refurbished areas. Although the residence itself is only 10 years old and is well situated in a beautiful parklike setting, it was time for an update, says Ferguson. All of the common areas have received a facelift -- from the grand entrance with new wood flooring and accents, to the bistro lounge and the grand dining hall on the main floor, to the hallways that act as a photo gallery of great moments in Winnipeg’s history. The second floor features the renovated games area, housing a pool table, an open area for daily exercise classes, a separate fitness room with essentials such as bikes, treadmills, and a wall-mounted television, and an internet lounge that has touch-screen computer monitors and senior-friendly software preprogrammed for each guest with email, photos and games. The third floor offers an updated library and card room. The piece de resistance is the renovated theatre room, which features an enormous flat-screen TV, theatre-style seating, an old-fashioned popcorn machine and a surround sound system. Patricia Mulcahy, Director of Marketing, says they took their cues from the residents themselves, based on resident survey results and informal feedback. For example, residents said they wanted the library to be a place where they could choose a book from the extensive
selection of titles and then find a comfortable chair in which to read. They asked for and have received just that -- a homey library with oversized armchairs and soft lighting. The suites are also being renovated to make them “warmer and more inviting,” she says. Colour selections are more modern, but cozy; the bathrooms all feature both a low bathtub and a well-lit walk-in shower with secure handrails throughout for safety. The kitchenettes have had the countertops upgraded and enlarged, more modern cabinetry and a larger in-suite fridge/freezer - large enough to hold a couple of pints of ice cream, which is important to the residents, notes Mulcahy. Although Portsmouth includes lunch and dinner service, as well as snacks in the bistro lounge, residents can also enjoy breakfast and snacks in their own suites. The project came in on time and the key to its success, says Ferguson, was making sure the residents were always informed of the progress. From initial meetings with the design team in 2008 to determine the “vision,” to weekly Resident Construction Meetings (complete with chocolate hammers and screwdrivers) and even more immediate forms of communication like nightly postings of work to occur the following day.
level of service, right down to linens and china on the tables. And although the dining area on the main floor, which is open to the second storey, had to be boarded off to prevent dust and debris from spreading, it didn’t take long for residents to make peepholes in the plastic so they could view the transformation for themselves. “Some of the residents acted as unofficial site foremen – they’d monitor different areas of the building and report the progress to us,” says Ferguson. “This is their home. We wanted to ensure that their voices were heard, and that their input was part of this process. I think we’ve achieved that.” Now all that’s left is the celebration Portsmouth’s residents and staff are looking forward to hosting Winnipeggers at their March 18th gala celebration, and are happy to arrange appointments for personal tours as well.
Mulcahy, who often spoke with residents to get their take on the project, says they were generally more interested than inconvenienced, and appreciated the effort staff made to minimize disruption to service. For example, when the dining area was briefly closed off to accommodate renovations, meals were served on the second floor and staff took every consideration to ensure residents felt they received the same

New Lease on Life Gimli has certainly grown over the past 25 to 35 years. Now, with a proposed 96-suite life lease project slated for the Lake Winnipeg community, it will again broaden its range as a place that is so much more than just a beach town. The new centre is a project from Westcan Developments Inc., a Winnipeg-based firm that will be breaking ground soon on a similar undertaking in Thunder Bay with Compass Square. Alongside project manager Gordon Gray, the company president Jack Goods suggests that the life lease concept is growing in popularity among those looking for lifestyle, security and value. “Life lease projects are no longer simply wellappointed apartment blocks for seniors housing,” says Goods, commenting that the Gimli and Thunder Bay projects represent the next generation of life lease options with buildings that offer ‘community within community.’ To achieve this goal Westcan has packed the project with a lengthy list of amenities. Inside the eight-storey building, residents would find gym and spa, private dining room, chapel, games and activity rooms, a greenhouse area, and a carpenter’s workshop. There are even hotel-like guest facilites proposed. “Seniors want to be active. The days of just sitting on the porch and putting in time are over. With Westcan’s life lease projects, we can offer a lifestyle where residents can have many of the active living options they need right in the building. And when the weather gets cold, there is no concern about just packing a bag and heading off to a winter residence or holiday destination. The life lease option adds simplicity to the mix and it does so in a very cost effective manner,” he notes.
Typically, the entry fee for Life lease is 46 percent of the cost of the unit, and since the projects are sponsored by community organizations and are non-profit, costs are kept to a minimum. For the average couple considering downsizing, this can be a huge factor in their overall financial plan. For many, investing in a life lease unit will mean that only a portion of their available capital is tied up in housing, leaving them with savings to sock away for a rainy day or to simply to enjoy life. High-value life lease projects such as Westcan’s Thunder Bay and Gimli projects spread the cost of the many amenities over the whole project. “Since the project is a non-profit, these costs are kept to a minimum, and the bulk financing of the project keeps financing costs low as well,” explains Goods. “When the choice is between a Westcan high-value project or an apartment down the street, Westcan always comes out on top.” For more information, visit www.glgmanagment.ca

Warm, Friendly & Family Focused Residents at any one of Homestead Manitoba’s assisted living for independent seniors’ homes in Winnipeg can rest assured that they will be treated with care and respect. Yes, they offer a lot of the same things many other 55-plus projects do, such as meals, excursions and activities. But what sets this Winnipeg-based company apart is the deep pride they share in creating a warm, friendly and family-focused environment for all of their tenants. “Because we have such a personal relationship with our tenants, you can just feel it the minute you step in the door. And it’s always that way because we love what we do and are focused on providing a home-like, family environment,” says Julia, Property Manager. “And because we are a 100 percent Winnipeg-based company, we understand the needs, wants and financial considerations of Winnipeggers.” Whether it’s Kildonan House, Sterling House, Dakota House or Devonshire House, Julia says it’s important for tenants to feel comfortable and know that it’s more than just a suite; it’s their home. Staff members work hard to add to that family atmosphere - it’s that personal attention and relationship building that has created significant positive changes in residents, who can often otherwise feel isolated or lonely. Recently, residents of all four locations had the chance to get together in one central location, Dakota House in St. Vital, for a little friendly competition. Staff staged the Nintendo Wii Olympics during the Vancouver Winter Games. There were teams representing each of the four buildings - all competing against each other for valuable bragging rights and a jersey signed by all of the participants that will be displayed in a common area of the winning team’s building - and will be passed on to the next winning team.
“It was a sight to see!” says Julia. “They were all cheering each other on, and clapping their thunder sticks. They had such a fantastic time, and they got to interact with one other,” she adds. “There was the nicest little lady who was having the time of her life. She wasn’t competing; she came just to cheer on her teammates. She came up to me after and whispered that she used to be shy and quiet, and now the other tenants call her ‘the rowdy one’. It’s that kind of thing that makes me love my job!” But it’s not only the residents who come out of their shell and find a whole new network of friends. Julia recalls another occasion just before Christmas when one of their teen-aged serving staff told her how excited she was to be with her new friends, the seniors, for the holidays.
Devonshire House (75 Kildonan Green Drive) sixth months ago. The first three locations are at full capacity, but there are just a handful of suites still available at Devonshire House. Julia credits their success to their attentive, caring, and professional staff - approximately 180 employees between the four buildings who make it a personal commitment to make the tenants feel like they are home. “They are all very caring people who bring that to work every single day,” she says. “We all have grandparents, and we treat our tenants the way we’d want them to be treated - with dignity and respect. I think that makes the difference.”
“Our goal is to provide the best possible service in support of our residents and to deliver that service in a secure and comfortable residential setting in which a sense of community is encouraged,” says Julie. “You see that in every one of our buildings.” It was just nine years ago that the first building - Kildonan House at 216 Edison Avenue opened in 2001, and was “fantastically well received in the community,” says Julia. Decisions were then made to build on that success and open Sterling House (909 Wilkes Avenue), which recently celebrated its fifth anniversary with a fireworks display on the pond behind the grounds. Dakota House (1145 Dakota Street), which is close to the St. Vital Shopping Centre, opened its doors three years ago, and most recently Homestead introduced

Safe, Sound & Sustainable You could call it the future of condo construction, but residents of Mapleton Lane, a 55-plus life lease condo project, will simply call it home. The unique construction of the 49-unit building makes it the utmost in sustainability, durability and safety, according to Christopher Daly of MMP Architects. “My goal was to create a sustainable building, while reducing its life cycle maintenance costs and the impact on the environment, “says Daly, principal architect and owner of MMP Architects who were responsible for the project. “I think we’ve come up with the right equation for an economic solution of high quality.” That starts with exterior walls fashioned out of 10-inch insulated concrete formwork, which is slowly gaining popularity outside of residential home construction. It offers higher insulation levels and soundproofing than traditional plywood and concrete forms. It also boasts an R-value of 24 with the additional advantage of thermal massing; the ability of the concrete to hold and maintain heat for long periods of time once the source has stopped, thereby reducing long term heating costs. For example, says Daly, during construction the second floor didn’t have any additional heat source but still
registered ambient temperature of around 20 degrees. The building, which was constructed mainly using materials that were locally made or manufactured, also features a geothermal system with individual controls in each suite, and PowerSmart building requirements throughout. Above the eco-friendly components, safety was a large priority due to the demographic nature of the residents. We wanted to provide a safe building so naturally we looked at concrete throughout. This was done via two directions; one was accomplished by building a firewall
that essentially splits the building in two so that if there’s a fire in one half of the building, it can be contained. Secondly, we used a pre-cast concrete double tee section for the floor assemblies, which provide a two-hour fire separation between floors, double that of the National Building Code requirements. In addition, by using pre-cast concrete double tee sections, the contractor was able to eliminate concrete columns in the parkade making parking much easier, as well as the ability to remodel the suites easily since there are no interior load-bearing walls.

The Oxbow on the Seine
Towers Realty Group is proud to present the natural style of the Oxbow on the Seine. This new condominium complex on Creek Bend Road, located off St. Anne’s Road, will be built in three phases, with phase one ready for possession date in the spring of 2011. Phase one will be located at 80 Creek Bend Rd, near the scenic Seine River, which is greatly loved by people who canoe and hike its length. The Oxbow on the Seine will be built with concrete and steel, including concrete piles, hollow core floors supported on insulated concrete walls, and large concrete balconies supported on concrete columns. This ensures the building will be quiet, fire-resistant and energy efficient. There will be excellent air quality, thanks to the constant inflow of fresh air. All units feature triple pane, low-E argon-filled
exterior windows and balcony doors, plus PVC window frames. There are three different floor plans available, from the 742 sq ft one-bedroom units to the 1,105 sq ft two-bedroom units. Each of the units feature nine-foot high ceilings, large storage closets, and open concept designs. Suites also include five appliances (refrigerator, washer and dryer, dishwasher, stove and range hood), blinds, and one outdoor parking stall. All purchasers have a pre-construction choice of light or dark colour schemes for paint, cabinetry and flooring.
The location of the condominiums is fabulous - it’s only three minutes away from the Perimeter Highway for those who want quick access to cottage country routes, and minutes from the Victoria Hospital and the University of Manitoba. Downtown is a quick 15 minute car trip away. The show suite is located at 100 Creek Bend Rd. on the corner of St. Anne’s Road and Creek Bend Road (look for a little blue house). For more information on Oxbow on the Seine, visit the website at www.oxbowcondos.com
The third phase of construction will include a gymnasium and common area that will be accessible to all three buildings. Small pets under 35 lbs are allowed. There are many upgrades available to purchasers: heated indoor parking, suite upgrades such as stainless steel appliances, tile backsplashes, adding a garburetor, plus flooring upgrades to ceramic tile or hardwoods and more. Condo fees range from $163 to $235 a month, which includes water, hot water, landscaping, snow removal, building insurance, and management fees. The condominiums themselves range in price from $166,400 for a onebedroom on the second floor, to $274,900 for a 1,105 deluxe two-bedroom penthouse unit that includes heated parking and many upgrades. (All prices are subject to GST.) This is a fantastic value, as it’s very hard to find a concretebuilt condominium at this price level.

A new stone age Just as winter-weary Manitobans start planning their landscaping projects for spring, Barkman is introducing an exciting new precast concrete product that will give homeowners a timeless, naturally beautiful and versatile option to help them build the yard of their dreams. Manufactured exclusively in Manitoba by Barkman, the “Belvedere” stone offers the strength and durability inherent to precast stone, but with a number of unique features making it a welcome addition to the company’s extensive line of precast concrete products. “The Belvedere has the rough look of natural stone but it has a more uniform quality, making it much easier to install,” says Wayne Wiebe, Winnipeg Sales Manager for Barkman. “It also looks good from all sides, making it an ideal stone for use in areas where aesthetics are a consideration, such as in dividing walls, as a focal point or in an outdoor entertainment area featuring a built-in barbeque grill, for example.”
By Leigh Patterson
Belvedere stones can be used in all types of hardscaping projects, from extensive retaining walls of varying heights to simple flowerbeds. Water features or windows can be easily accommodated as well. Barkman will be manufacturing cap blocks to add the finishing touch to the tops of pillars built of Belvedere stone, as well as “Rosetta” concrete steps and “Grand Flagstone” patio stones to complement the rugged character of the Belvedere stone. Currently available in an appealing neutral colour blend of grays, browns and beiges called “Fond du Lac,” the stone “is as much at home in a River Heights yard as it is in a Lindenwoods yard,” Wiebe says, noting that the colour is added during the manufacturing of the product so that it becomes integral to the stone. Wiebe adds that Barkman expects to add more colour options in the future as expected interest in the new line grows.
stones can be incorporated into straight or curved designs. Of course, the stones are made to withstand our harsh Manitoba climate. The Belvedere stone will be showcased at the Barkman exhibit at the upcoming 2010 Home Expressions Show but already the response to the new product has been “great” according to Wiebe, who is receiving many enquiries from professional landscapers and architects looking for an affordable, attractive and easy-to-use product to use in their clients’ yards.
Ideal for do-it-yourselfers, Belvedere stone projects can be easily constructed by stacking and bonding the stones together using a landscape adhesive readily available at any big box hardware store or garden centre. The

It’s Better in the Backyard By Christine Hanlon
No matter what their age, people love water. There’s nothing more inviting on a summer day than plunging into the pool for a swim or lounging in the crystal clear water beneath a sunny sky. “Having a pool changes everything,” says Jason Kemp, who purchased an in-ground pool from Aqua-Tech last year. “In the summertime you want to make the most of every day. Parents of 10-year old triplets, Jason and Krystal Kemp are happy to see their sons
spending time at home with their friends. By asking Aqua-Tech to install a hot tub as well, they have made their back yard into a desirable destination both summer and winter. “We used to spend very little time in our backyard,” says Kemp. “Now in the summer we’re there every day.” It’s a sentiment echoed by Tracy Chernick, who purchased an in-ground pool and hot tub from Aqua-Tech last year as well. In the summer, her boys aged six and ten, were spending more time indoors than outside. All that changed last summer. “They spent plenty of time in the pool,” recalls the Linden Ridge resident. “When they had friends over they had something to do other than watching T.V. or playing video games.” And because the pool is heated, the temperature didn’t need to be blazing hot for swimming. The entire family enjoyed their new leisure space well into the fall, socializing with friends, sitting by the pool or diving in for a dip. “We probably spent more time in the backyard last year than all the past years put together,” says Chernick. Because their yard is a strange dimension with lots of unusable space, the Chernicks were

glad to find that Aqua-Tech had many different shapes from which to choose. “We picked a shape that would enable us to get the largest pool into the backyard that we could,” recalls Chernick, adding the company was also able to deal with the challenges of the sloping landscape. She was surprised at the speed in which the pool was installed. “They were very efficient in getting the pool in,” she recalls, “which was good, because the quicker we got it in, the more quickly we could use it.” Like the Kemps, the Chernicks relied on Aqua-Tech to create a pool deck in coloured and stamped concrete. The Kemps also had the company complete all the retaining walls around the pool. In fact, Aqua-Tech is fully equipped to complete an entire backyard installation, from a concrete, stone or tile deck to retaining walls and fencing. In the industry, many companies use sub-trades when asked to deliver a complete project.
“At Aqua-Tech, all our people are in-house so we can have full control over the quality, timeline and overall installation experience,” says owner Glen MacGillivray. A leader in the pool industry since 1977, the company prides itself in providing pools that are built well and serviced well. Each leisure space is customized specifically to the homeowners’ wants and needs. No one knows this better than John and Mabel Garcea. This is the second time they have had a pool built by Aqua-Tech - a 22 x 44-foot
basin large enough to swim laps. “This time we had the luxury of building the yard around the pool,” says John Garcea, adding that the company was involved during the new home’s construction. As owner of S & J Construction, he recommends Aqua-Tech both to his clients and to his friends. “I think in Manitoba they’re the best in the business,” says Garcea. “A business is built on reputation, and they’ve got a good name and the expertise to back it up.”

Spaces to live in.
Aqua-Tech combines the latest in pool building technologies with a skilled team of industry leading professionals for pools that remain beautiful and provide enjoyment for many years to come. Across the province and beyond, the company has designed and installed a vast number of pool environments with a virtually endless array of features. “We do a lot of waterfalls,” notes MacGillivray. Also popular is underwater lighting, sun ledges, and water features such as laminars (a rope of water with fibre optics) and fireflies (an eightfinger spray with fibre optics). Auto-closing covers, grand Roman entrances, glass tile water feature walls, sheer descent waterfalls, diving rocks, shallow deepened steel and vinyl staircases—there’s no limit to the possibilities. Aqua-Tech has three designers each with 10 years of experience. “We sit down with clients and go over the possibilities,” explains MacGillivray. “Then for those who are committed to moving forward, we do a 3-D yard design.” Technological innovations extend not only to the design process but also to the pools themselves. The Kemps, Chernicks and Garceas all have mineral salt pools that add softness to the water and are easier to maintain than pools

that use raw chlorine. They represent 90 percent of Aqua-Tech installations. “If you’re spending more than a half hour on maintenance we haven’t trained you well,” advises MacGillivray.
That kind of easy maintenance is important to people like the Kemps, who as the owners of Kemp Hearing Centre, want to spend their precious free time relaxing and enjoying their leisure space. And as spring arrives, that is exactly what they plan to do.
“Having a pool changes everything,” says Jason Kemp. “It’s the best money we ever spent.”

All Access Pass for Your Own Backyard It is now easier than ever to create a theme park right in your own backyard. “We’re a full resort store,” says Jason Lawrence of Oasis Leisure Centre. With everything from spas to gazebos and villas, above and in-ground pools to waterfalls and grottos, there is no need to go anywhere else. Start with a pool. Then add a slide, maybe a rock waterfall, a diving board, a sun ledge, a basketball hoop and a cave. Finish with some lighting and a couple of water features such as deck jets. “The sky’s the limit with your pool,” says Lawrence. “Come to Oasis and we can show you a lot of ideas within whatever budget you have that can transform your backyard into your personal resort.” For a one-time investment, homeowners obtain an all-access pass to a lifetime of enjoyment. Add a barbeque island, firepit and patio furniture—all available from Oasis—and the setting is complete. “The best thing about our summers is that we get five months of beautiful weather,” notes
Lawrence. “People want to make the most of every day.” And with a wide range of products as well as convenient financing, Oasis can
bring that “Home Resort” lifestyle within reach for everyone.
Superior Surface The natural sand coloured area around this swimming pool creates the perfect setting for this outdoor oasis. Natural Stone Arts also used the same decorative stone and epoxy overlay to cover the steps from the house in the non-slip surface. Coordinating well with the exterior of the house, the warm tone of this overlay is only one of 16 available colours. “It’s easy to match colours with the surroundings,” notes Kirk Gorham of Natural Stone Arts. In business for over 27 years, Gorham has witnessed the durability and longevity of Sierra Stone firsthand. On this porous material, surface water drains downwards, eliminating the delamination problems present with some other overlays. Repairs on cracks are easily made. With borders and patterns as an option, Sierra Stone is ideal for everything from driveways to pool decks, patios and steps. Stain resistant, it is unaffected by salt, oil or gasoline, etc. “The big advantage of our product is that there isn’t any need to remove the old surface,” says Gorham. Natural Stone Arts will repair any cracks in the underlying concrete before applying the overlay. Gorham adds that work is usually completed in less than two days. Less costly to install than stamped concrete or interlocking brick, the Sierra Stone application comes with a three-year warranty. spring 2010 | STYLE MANITOBA | 65

Gotta Have a Complete Lifestyle Krevco Lifestyles is the only company in Manitoba to provide a complete array of “gotta have” lifestyle products and services. Now encompassing the Embers Fireplace division, Krevco offers everything to make a home a haven of comfort and enjoyment. Two new locations in Brandon and another on St. Anne’s Road make it even easier for western Manitobans and South Winnipeggers to enjoy those lifestyle amenities they just “gotta have.” As spring follows a record 2009 spa season for Krevco Lifestyles, the company is expecting demand to continue growing. The reason has a lot to do with the company’s selection of fantastic hot tubs, especially those featuring patented Eco Pure technology that polishes the water while cutting down your need for as many chemicals. “What that means is that you don’t have to be a mad chemist to balance the water,” says Don Carson of Krevco Lifestyles. After all, having a hot tub should be about all about relieving stress. When it comes to relaxation and recreation, Krevco has it covered! It’s not difficult to see why Krevco Lifestyles was voted Consumer’s Choice winner a third year in a row for Hot Tub products.
Other popular stress-free products include Krevco’s new pellet stoves. As spring arrives, more and more people are starting to think of heading back to their cottages. For those who don’t feel like chopping wood, pellet stoves are a worry-free solution that burn cleaner and leave less residue. An automatic refill option even eliminates the necessity of tending the fire! Carson invites consumers his Sargent and Berry and Brandon locations to see all their working fireplaces on display. The increase in pool construction bookings for 2010 is yet another vote of confidence in the growing company. “We do it right and we build them to last,” says Carson. Krevco certainly has a proven record for reliability and service, recognized for a third year in a row with The Consumers Choice Award for swimming pool contracting. In fact, many homeowners have come to rely on the company’s Renew-a-Pool division to get their pools looking and working like new for the summer season. “Our team can help you do that in short order,” notes Carson. “Call and book early so we can be there as soon as the snow is gone.” Krevco has one of the largest parts departments in Manitoba, with the experience and expertise to rebuild pumps and heaters and replace liners for all pools.
Carson adds that aboveground pools are a popular alternative. One advantage is that homeowners can take the pool with them if they sell their home. Krevco Lifestyles supplies to the do-it-yourselfer but can provide an installation team as well. Another exciting option many homeowners are finding they just “gotta have” is the swim spa. A patented propulsion system creates a one way current that offers a realistic swimming experience and workout. These compact units can be installed indoors or outdoors for year-round use. Why go to the public pool when, summer or winter, it’s so easy to swim at home? While some stores focus on seasonal lifestyle products, an active, healthy and enjoyable lifestyle is always in season at Krevco. Selfcontained steam showers can transform an average bathroom into a luxury spa, while jetted bathtubs continue to be “gotta have” lifestyle additions. Add a tanning bed and you’ve got it covered. Not surprisingly, the company won the Consumers Choice award for bathroom fixture selection for the third year in a row as well. And as more people decide to custom build, they are looking for way to “do it right” in their new homes. Krevco Lifestyles has all the amenities to fully equip a fitness room or a games room. Its American Heritage Line includes bars, card tables and pool tables, ideal for active families who like to entertain. At the same time, Carson knows that as soon as the snow starts to melt, homeowners are dreaming of living outdoors. Krevco Lifestyles experienced record sales of its patio furniture in 2009. In response, Carson has made sure that the 2010 complement of patio furniture will arrive in plenty of time for all of those eager to outfit their decks and patios in time for those first warm days. “We’re making sure we have some of the newest trends and colours available,” he adds. After all, responding to customer needs is what Krevco Lifestyles is all about. Doing that consistently and doing it right is what has made Krevco the go-to store for Manitoba’s lifestyle needs.

All about the details When it comes to attention to detail, pride of workmanship and superior customer service, landscaper Kyle Thibeault literally leaves no stone unturned. Thibeault, owner/operator of Silver Stone Landscaping, is also blessed with a creative eye and a degree in environmental science that gives him a solid understanding of the soils and topography that anchor his projects. This combination of art, science and quality goods and services come together in showpiece properties that have earned Silver Stone a solid word-of-mouth reputation. One example is a large landscaping project built last year in Oakbank. “The yard was off-grade, about 12” to 16” lower when we started, with poor drainage. Standing water was an issue. We had to build it up properly before we could start,” Thibeault says. He enlisted the help of experienced skid steer owner/ operator Walter Demski. “Walter is as detail-oriented as I am, and goes above and beyond, so he made sure the yard was correctly sloped and had the proper grades according to municipal guidelines. When you use the right equipment, the job gets done properly and efficiently.” With drainage issues addressed, Thibeault and his well-trained crew could go on to create a beautiful property for the client, including a patio oasis in the backyard. Wide, curvilinear stone steps lead from the rear of the home down to a sunny, interlocking stone patio featuring a raised preformed Barkman stone firepit. To create a consistent look and feel, the same Barkman stone treatment is carried into the retaining wall anchored by several large natural boulders. And, as an example of the unique detail that Thibeault likes to bring to all Silver Stone projects, he shaped the retaining wall stone to mould around the boulders. To soften the hardscaping, Thibeault incorporated spruce and maple trees, various shrubs such
68 | STYLE MANITOBA | spring 2010
By Leigh Patterson as global cedars, junipers, and ninebark, and grasses set into an easy care, dark crushed stone base. Thibeault and his team worked diligently through wet, cold conditions to complete the yard, and as he does with every project, he kept his client informed every step of the way. “I’m passionate and excited about what I do, so I like to let clients know what I’m doing and why I’m doing it and to flag problems if they come up. At the end of the day, there are no surprises and they know they are getting the best possible outcome.” Thibeault adds that since ensuring his customers’ satisfaction is paramount, “we never cut corners and in fact always exceed the required standards in the work that we do.” The same attention to detail extends to Silver Stone’s small customized projects, such as two water features Thibeault constructed for a Pritchard Farm yard. Boulders sourced from northern Manitoba were chiselled and split into concrete slabs that form rustic steps of a backyard waterfall. Released from a retaining pond at the top, water cascades softly over the textured stone. The stone’s soft hues of grey, purple and blue are illuminated at night by special water lights, which extend the enjoyment of the water feature into the evening. In the front yard Thibeault created another striking water feature by drilling holes into large boulders and channelling water up and through to bubble out at the top. Thibeault is not only growing a business, he is growing a clientele. Silver Stone clients are impressed with Thibeault’s work, and the personal connection he establishes with them from consultation through planning and development means, “by the end of each job, my clients are my friends, too,” he says. “When you do good quality work, and you’re honest and hard working, people recognize that.”

Constant Design Evolution The new South Pointe showhome built by Huntington Homes “represents the latest step forward in an evolutionary design process,” says Rob Swan, co-owner of the prestigious Winnipeg-based custom homebuilding firm. Huntington Homes has continually been in the vanguard of new design concepts among Winnipeg custom homebuilders. Almost 20 years ago, they introduced the great room concept to the city after having observed the success of the concept in the United States. Swan recalls the positive reception their great room received in 1993, when Huntington won the Gold medal with their showhome in the Parade of Homes - the first builder in the Manitoba Parade of Homes to feature the concept. “I remember smiling as I watched people walk through our display home and then at some point, stop and do a room count and suddenly realize that there was no formal living room,” Swan recalls. People were very excited and made comments like: ‘it’s about time, it makes so much sense!’ The great room design concept has been embraced by Manitoba homebuyers ever since.” Huntington’s latest showhome unveils the new Semi-Formal Dining area, which reflects buyers’ more relaxed, casual lifestyle. This new concept has been well received in their latest
display home. It features a great room, which is delineated from the rest of the open living area by flooring variation and ceiling bulkheads that highlight the area. That bulkhead ceiling design is echoed in the shape of the lighting area over the table in the Semi-Formal Dining area. “People have often told us they don’t use their formal dining room enough to allocate so much space to that room, and that having a second dining area in the kitchen makes no sense.” The Semi-Formal Dining area flows off the open kitchen, which features an eating area forming part of the island. A family can choose to eat in the kitchen or the Semi-Formal Dining area. The rest of the main floor is devoted to a master bedroom with an ensuite featuring luxurious spa-style amenities, a large second bedroom and an office/den.
efforts and flair for design in the creation of this impeccable floor plan,” notes Rob Swan. “Huntington Homes takes pride in creating homes that are as beautiful as they are comfortable,” he adds. “Whether you are choosing a design with the Semi-Formal Dining area or with the formal dining area, your Huntington home will be built meticulously and to our superior building specifications.” This Huntington showhome at 87 Autumnview Drive in South Pointe Development is open Wednesday and Thursday from 5 until 8pm, and Saturday and Sunday from 1 to 5 pm, except during the Parade of Homes, when it will be open six days a week for the scheduled Parade hours. At the rear of the home, large striking windows offer spectacular views of the lake, the park and the forest beyond. The walkout lower level boasts two spacious bedrooms, a three-piece bath, a bar area, sitting area, billiard table and a projection TV viewing area. “Families with teenagers living at home love the lower level walkout as it allows them to have their own separate space,” says Swan. “I credit my brother Sheldon, who is my partner at Huntington Homes, for his tireless

Fresh New Looks The winds of change are blowing fresh ideas into the realm of custom building in Manitoba. These exciting new looks come courtesy of Artista Homes, a builder that continues to revolutionize the new housing industry. Take their showhome in Waverley West. A gold award winner at the fall 2009 Parade of Homes, the design is refreshingly innovative both inside and out. Light-coloured stone, horizontally paneled James Hardie siding and straight rooflines with wider soffits lend the exterior the look of a Frank Lloyd Wright design. In the foyer, knotty pine boards sprayed with a whitewash treatment are embedded in a rock base inset with uplights. The effect is dramatic. So is the hand-scraped maple flooring that runs throughout the main floor. It gives a bright warm feeling to the space, which in this staging, is used as a music room but could just as easily serve as an open and airy dining room. In the kitchen the bright contemporary look continues, with the lighter tones of the floor and countertop contrasting with the dark cabinetry and punches of lime green that serve as the accent colour throughout the home. But what visitors will find even more striking is the bank of Euro-style lift-up aluminum upper cabinets with tinted glass.
Or could it be the loft floating over the kitchen that makes this space so remarkable? Most likely it’s both. Ideal for lounging and relaxing, the raised loft enabled the builder to give the lower level exercise room a 12-foot ceiling height. At the same time, sheets of tempered glass bring in light from the main floor. But the builder’s fresh new ideas don’t stop at home design. Artista is also renowned for being an early adopter of technology that improves the lifestyles of homeowners, no matter what style of home they desire. This state-of-the-art construction features geothermal heating and cooling. Artista combines a cutting edge approach to building with old world craftsmanship based on 60 years experience in making customers’ dreams come true. The evidence can be found in every detail of the exciting two-storey display home at 123 Bridlewood Road in Waverley West’s Bridgwater Forest. Not surprisingly, response to this amazing showhome has been resoundingly enthusiastic. All those who have not yet had a chance to experience this exquisite design will be pleased to hear that the showhome will be part of the spring 2010 Parade of Homes. This location will remain open until the end of August.

Located at 7 Eddington Point in Bridgwater Forest, this Kensington showhome makes an impact even before visitors open the door. The posts and rooflines framing the grand entryway set the tone for the entire design without having to compete with the garage, which is recessed to be level with the rest of the house. The exterior is a prelude to a magnificent interior design, which begins with a spacious twostorey foyer overlooked by a second-floor loft. On the main floor, the great room opens to the kitchen with its built-in appliances and mosaic tile backsplash. The ceiling in the great room rises two storeys to capture the abundance of light from the wall of windows. This well-designed layout is coupled with distinctive architectural details. Columns separate the great room and kitchen, while in the master bedroom a coffered ceiling provides an attractive option for this home design. On the other hand, features such as window grills and a cultured stone exterior are standard rather than optional.
After 40 years in business, Kensington Homes continues to have a solid reputation for providing the best possible value. The builder showcases these talents in a wide variety of display homes throughout the city.
Rediscovering Affordable Quality Discovery Homes’ display home in Bridgwater Forest was so popular that customers quickly bought up the lane lot design. “It has been our most popular seller,” confirms General Manager Joshua Rist. “There are only a certain number of lane lots in the development and once those are gone, we will be sold out.” The lane lots allowed the builder to place the garage at the back of the house so the front could be fully devoted to windows and living space. But this was only one of the fabulous features that made Discovery’s showhome design so popular. From the living room to the kitchen, high quality imitation walnut laminate combines with a stunning light fixture that adds some shadow play to the dining area and dark-stained maple cabinets beyond. Balancing openness with privacy, a hallway connects the ensuite, walk-in closet and master bedroom. A fully developed basement harbours a fourth bedroom, a bar and a rec room with pool table area. On the exterior, a private covered deck is bordered by the house and the garage, while the front features arched windows reflecting the curved wall with art niche in the front foyer. All those who fell in love with this 1,429 square foot bungalow will be relieved to hear that Discovery Homes is developing a bungalow with similar features in the next phase of the development.

Growing Up Located just south of Bishop Grandin and Lagimodière in Winnipeg’s steadily growing southeastern quadrant, popular Sage Creek is among the largest of new communities currently under development. Already some 250 families have settled in, with expectations for over 600 new homes to be occupied over the next couple of years. When complete, it will be home to approximately 3,500 to 4,000 families, making it equivalent in population to a small town. That small town feel coupled with big city amenities is what makes Sage Creek unique, says Eric Vogan, Land Development Manager, Qualico Communities. “This is a pedestrianfriendly community, with nine kilometres of trails that weave through the wetlands and converge on the future Village Centre. There is a rural spaciousness here that residents appreciate but also easy access to major urban amenities, and downtown.” Vogan describes Sage Creek as a mixed community, with empty nesters living alongside young and established families. There are singledetached residences as well as multi-family dwellings, and in the Village Centre there will be a full slate of commercial services, such as grocery and drug stores, and other retail and service businesses. “Once we get the critical mass of families in, we can start developing the retail options in the Village Centre. This is all part of our vision to make Sage Creek as complete and multi-faceted as possible,” he says, noting that Qualico has already completed its 68,000-square foot stateof-the-art LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Head Office in the community, with several employees already electing to make Sage Creek home. Vogan adds that the company is in discussions with a number of retail and service providers.
As Qualico rolls out its latest phase in Sage Creek, Vogan says we can expect more luxury and mid-market lots to become available. “Already we have some great looking homes nestled onto some very beautiful wetland and trail lots. With participation from top custom homebuilders, such as Arlt Homes, Hearth Homes, Gino’s Homes and Artista Homes, to name just a few, we will see even more interesting designs on lots through the community as it grows. Attractive condominium homes, constructed by Randall, are also available.” Vogan happily reports that with spring approaching, Sage Creek is experiencing a strong surge in activity and interest. “It’s gratifying to see Sage Creek growing into such a vibrant, friendly community,” he states.

Homes that Make Sense The Arlt showhome in Sage Creek is a fine example of how the builder combines cutting-edge style with designs made for comfortable living. A two-storey great room makes a dramatic focal point to this home. At the same time, the media wall - with its fireplace and entertainment unit - keeps the space warm and inviting. The open concept is just as comfortable for a couple as for a crowd. “It’s not only a great home for family life but also for entertaining,” says Jason Arlt. He points out that locating the den/office at the front of the house makes the design ideal for a homebased business. “When you meet with clients, they don’t have to go through the entire house,” he notes. It’s this kind of versatility that makes sense in a home. With more than 30 years of experience in the industry, Arlt Homes takes pride in creating designs that meet homeowners’ needs. “Rooms are situated to make the house suit your lifestyle,” confirms Arlt. Take, for instance, their showhome at 2 Ashgrove Point in Bridgwater Forest. The laundry room is located upstairs along with the four bedrooms. No more running up and down the stairs with the laundry hamper! The home also includes a fully finished basement with a bathroom
and a fifth bedroom. “We’re finding now that families sometimes include more than one generation,” says Arlt. Or the lower level could be used as a comfortable guest suite. It’s all about flexibility. This ability to customize a house to meet exact needs is an important consideration for empty nesters as well. After retirement, many people would rather have a library and a den than extra bedrooms. Arlt Homes offers the perfect solution via its detached bungalow condominiums in Pritchard Farm Southlands Village. The bungalows marry the flexibility of single-family home ownership with the advantages of condominium living. No more shovelling the driveway or mowing the lawn. This turnkey lifestyle simplifies summers at the cottage and winter travel plans. Condominium owners can also depend on Arlt Homes’ longstanding reputation for taking care of products and customers. The builder also maintains quality by using a consistent group of trades in all its homes. “So the quality of your home is the same as the quality you see in the showhome,” says Arlt. With this kind of reliability, it’s no wonder that many people are building for the second or third time with Arlt Homes!

Anything but Ordinary Gino’s Homes is renowned for creating homes that stand out from the rest. This award-winning South Pointe bungalow at 77 Autumnview Drive is a case in point. Using the fine linear grain of bamboo flooring to emphasize the open spaces, the builder drew from the two tones in the floor to combine natural maple cabinetry with an espresso-stained island. “We can build them on-site for any sound system,” notes the builder. On the left, a twosided fireplace stands alone, commanding attention without competing with the entertainment unit or the art niches above. Mirroring the glass and stainless steel backsplash in the kitchen, the niches feature an ingenious system of steel clips, allowing homeowners to insert glass panels or remove them, as they wish. Again, these types of niches can be customdesigned to suit specific artwork. Etched or coloured glass inserts are yet another option. It is going that extra step that distinguishes a builder like Gino’s Homes. Take, for instance, the walkout lower level. Usually, even with clear span construction, a lower level ceiling will have several bulkheads to accommodate beams and ducting. Thanks to innovative construction methods, Gino’s Homes was able create a uniform nine-foot ceiling with no drop-downs. The result: a lower level that looks exactly like the main living area of a home! Visitors to the Parade of Homes will find this same distinctive feature in Gino’s new showhome at 43 Autumnview in Waverley West. With an uninterrupted 40 by 33-foot space, this lower level has no limitations. The builder certainly took full advantage of this fact, with numerous windows on all sides. A wet bar, plasma television and a 7.1 surround sound system are among the amenities.
The home also features a three-car garage and a completely covered deck off the main floor. Built with a Duralek floor and glass railing, the deck is completely maintenance free. “We’ve been building high quality custom homes in this city for 42 years now,” says the builder. “With this sort of home and location, customers are looking for something out-of-the-ordinary.” Besides being beautiful, the home is ideal both for living and entertaining. “We’re always considering these factors when designing our homes,” adds the builder. “We want to create not only something stunning and extraordinary, but also something comfortable and functional.” During the Spring Parade of Homes, more examples of Gino’s fine artistry will be on display at 6 Marine Drive in Van Hull Estates, 11 Elstree Court in Royalwood and 31 Lakebourne Drive in Amber Trails. spring 2010 | STYLE MANITOBA | 83

Vision of Beauty Thinking of a new home or vacation getaway? If so, most Manitobans have likely not considered the village of St. Georges, a picturesque community along the shores of the Winnipeg River just east of Pine Falls. “Its one of the province’s best kept secrets,” says Gordon Gray, project manager for the Cap Doré development, a single family housing project that will see 26 new homes built along the shores of Cap Doré at St. Georges. “I fell in love with the community the first time I saw it. The well-kept homes, the maritime look, the natural setting, and the people. What a beautiful place to visit, what a great place to live,” he says. St. Georges and the Cap Doré project (visit www.capdore.ca for more information) is situated an hour and 15 minutes from Winnipeg, and four miles up stream on the river from Pine Falls. The area boasts a full slate of amenities that includes a hospital, golf course, good schools, an indoor pool, hockey, curling, and a variety of restaurants and businesses in the Pine Falls area. The village itself boasts a new regional library, as well as bank and financial services, post office, and a deli that is famous throughout the district for its menu. The list goes on with boating, swimming, sailing, fishing, snowmobiling, skiing, snowboarding and more. Gray reports that he and partners were approached last year by the village. They were looking for a non-profit housing project on town held lands that would help stimulate the local economy. Now with the homes under construction, there is work for local trades, and new families are moving into the community. Cap Doré will site 26 new homes on ample country-sized lots that look onto the waters of the Winnipeg River. Already two properties are under construction, and Gray reports that the group has sold five lots. House sizes will range from 1,300 to 1,700 square feet. “Let us design and build your dream home on the beautiful shores of Cap Doré,” invites Gray, suggesting that with low interest rates and easy access to building trades, now is the time to take advantage of “Manitoba’s best kept secret.” Cap Doré will offer a luxuriously appointed 1,691 square foot showhome on site that will open in time for spring viewings.

Personalized Service When homeowners decide to build with Trikor Builders, they can be assured that one of the three partners will be on-site every day. “We pride ourselves on being a smaller builder,” says Brian Arnold, who has partnered with Fred and Victor Giesbrecht to form Trikor. “We’re hands-on through every phase of a project.” This allows the company to keep a close eye on construction as it develops. When issues crop up, they can be addressed immediately. It also makes it easier to maintain a more precise timeline. Ensuring that their new home was built on schedule was an important consideration for the owners of this 1,542-square-foot bungalow. Having sold their former house, they had a specific move-in date. This made Trikor—a company accustomed to building homes in four months from start to finish—a good fit for the family. Equally important was the builder’s reputation for innovation and quality combined with a focus on meeting specific needs. As a blended family, the homeowners needed a design that could accommodate several children while still feeling comfortable when only two people were living in the house.
The kitchen in this open concept is a perfect example of how Trikor was able to strike that balance. Self-contained by the full-width granite island, the kitchen is open to the great room thanks to the open layout. The island doubles as the perfect gathering place for a large crowd.
Bank, the company is also available to build homes throughout Winnipeg and the surrounding areas.
Meanwhile, the hardwood floor extends throughout the entire main floor to unify the space. The cabinetry is another common element throughout the home. Another feature that was important to the homeowners was maximizing the advantages of their beautiful third-acre lot. An abundance of large windows capture the view while letting in plenty of natural light. Trikor was also able to take full advantage of the extra wide property by carefully planning the orientation of the home. “We built the house more width-wide than length-wise,” explains Arnold. “That way they can still have a large backyard and the garage doesn’t have to cover three quarters of the façade. It can be off to the side for better curb appeal.” Personalizing a home to meet a client’s specific needs is foremost among the many talents that the Trikor team brings to every project. Very much in demand in their home base of Oak

Developed by Genstar, Stone Ridge Meadows is located on 12th Street, adjacent to an existing upscale development in the northwest corner of Stonewall, and within walking distance of its premiere attraction, Quarry Park. Landscaping has been completed in phase one, which consists of 50 lots that already have full underground services including sewer, water, gas and hydro. The development will see a total of 94 lots sold, which range in size from 62 to 75 feet in width, and 125 to 150 feet in depth. Prices for the lots range, starting at $85,000 and going up to $105,000 on the lake. “You will not find a comparable lot in the city for this price,” says Genstar’s David Boles. “In the city, you’d be looking at $200,000 and up for a comparable lot on the lake. This is an alternative to the city, with a great small town atmosphere. You can build a beautiful home here in a community with great schools and shopping.” The lot price isn’t the only selling feature for Stone Ridge Meadows. Down by the Riverside People have long been attracted to the natural beauty of McBeth Landing. Nestled next to a mature river bottom forest along the Red River, the area was first settled in 1815 by Selkirk colonist Alexander McBeth.
same time, a system of pedestrian trails allows residents to explore the picturesque landscape of a nature preserve adjacent to the river. Leading to McBeth Park, the trails will eventually connect to the Red River Parkway and the Kildonan Park trail system.
Nearly two centuries later, much of this magnificent land remains unchanged, with whitetail deer and fox still inhabiting McBeth Park. Residents of McBeth Landing can enjoy a peaceful walk through the woods or along the river, reveling in the bounty that only nature can bring.
In fact, with its privileged location east of Main Street, off of Red River Boulevard, McBeth Landing is far enough from the bustle of the city but close enough to all amenities. Both shopping and the new West Kildonan Collegiate are within walking distance.
Encompassing only 60 properties, the closeknit community is now entering its third and final phase of development. Since the first phase was launched in January 2008, lots have seen steady demand.
Yet, with its ample green space, the community is an oasis of calm and natural beauty. Accordingly, the development’s four quality builders are taking full advantage of the spectacular setting in their home designs.
McBeth landing features larger-than-standard properties with an average width of 50 feet, including a large number of pie-shaped lots. Located closer to the riverside, lots in the final phase are slightly larger than in the first two.
Dynasty Homes, recently opened its display home in Phase Three, a luxurious 2,698 twostorey on a pie-shaped lot at 203 McBeth Grove overlooking the river. Maple hardwood floors, cabinets and trim are paired with granite countertops and stainless steel appliances for a home that’s built to last. On the exterior, coloured brick mold cladding embraces the tripane windows. This is classic Dynasty Homes quality.
“There are a number of properties with wonderful river views,” notes Abe Friesen. A flood protection dike protects McBeth Landing and the surrounding area. At the
The same Dynasty standards can be seen in Monterey Park, their premier 55 plus community of detached bungalow condominiums. The new 1,460-square-foot show home at 4 Britton Bay features abundant windows plus hardwood floors throughout. A fireplace with built-in cabinetry in the great room is paired with maple cabinetry in the kitchen and a three-season sunroom overlooking the park-like setting. “With a starting price of $349,000 and low condo fees of $130 a month, Headingly’s Monterey Park brings Dynasty Homes awardwinning craftsmanship within reach,” says Dan Thiessen.

Big Things in Smaller Packages How fast time flies! It was not that long ago that developers launched Pritchard Farm Properties as a premier luxury residence destination just north of Winnipeg’s Perimeter Hwy in East St. Paul. Over the years the lots and homes offered a distinction that few sites could match. Now this tradition of luxury is being made easier to obtain with unique bare land condominiums in the community’s Southlands area. According to Pritchard Farm Southlands Development Manager Eric Vogan, the beauty of the condominium program is that buyers can select their lot, their builder and their design much as they would approach a custom home project. “This is worry free living in an upscale residential setting where all the aspects of property management are attended to, making it ideal for those who travel or have things to do beyond cutting grass and shovelling snow,” he says, adding that Pritchard Farm Southlands is an active adult community targeted to empty nesters who seek a sophisticated simplicity of lifestyle. Vogan reports that altogether there are 83 lots available with 12 homes already complete or under construction. “We have the participation
of some of Manitoba’s leading home builders, like Arlt Homes, Maric Homes and Irwin Homes, all of whom can deliver a custom home on a condominium title.” At this moment Maric Homes is constructing its first condo inside the development. According to Caroline Maric, the home is one that ties in perfectly with the lifestyle and luxury aspects of the community. “We are known as a builder that specializes in craftsmanship and innovation. This condo property is filled with custom woodwork and other aspects that highlight Maric’s unique building style. We are a builder that is all about the details and Pritchard Farm Southlands is a community that really allows us to show off what we do best.”
Wayne Penner agrees with Jason. Penner works with Irwin Homes marketing their new condo options in the East St. Paul community. “Those who decide to have a bare land condominium built in Pritchard Farm Southlands can maintain the quality they have become accustomed to, but at a size commensurate with their changing needs. The concept here is all about choice,” he says, pointing out that buyers can select lots such as those on the waterfront or the recently opened dry creek bed and pick a home design much as they would with a larger custom built residence. Concluding, Eric Vogan states, “This bare land condominium option represents an opportunity to get into the Pritchard Farm community in a relatively compact format without having to sacrifice any of the traditional upscale attributes of the neighbourhood.”
Describing the community further, Jason Arlt of Arlt Homes comments that options are many. “The condos of Pritchard Farm Southlands are geared to those who have transitioned in their family needs and now seek a home that is smaller, yet offers a high level of luxury in materials and layout. The designs offer fewer bedrooms, but in their place are dens and entertainment rooms,” he says, commenting that Arlt Homes is well placed to deliver, given their reputation as a highly experienced builder in the community that is well known for their craftsmanship and home designs.

One-of-a Kind Homes When asked about Irwin Homes’ objective as a custom builder, Krista Koop gets right to the point. “We pay attention to detail in order to create beautiful homes,” she explains. “We listen to our customers and what works for them. That’s why our houses are all so different.” To bring this point home, the builder decided to clad this display home with James Hardie siding on all four sides as a reminder to prospective clients that this is always a possibility for their own home. Just as distinctively, the flagstone exterior at the front of the house provides a gradual entrance of multi-level steps and landings. “It creates a nicer flow,” Koop points out. She adds that her husband and business partner, Andrew Koop, has a real talent for using a creative approach to achieve appealing designs. Meanwhile, the equally inspired interiors are mainly her doing. This showhome at 34 Prairie Oaks Cove in The Oaks is an excellent example of this partnership. Square windows around the oversized front door not only allow abundant light to flow in but also create an eye-catching detail both inside and out. Then, just off the entrance, the builder combined drywall cutouts and spindles rather than opting for the standard railing to the lower level.
The design also offers a seamless transition to the bar area, framed by two dry-walled pillars. The cabinets in the bar, great room entertainment unit, kitchen and island are all in maple with a rich chocolate brown stain, tying the open space together. Norcraft Cabinetry used a shaker style door and subtle hardware to create a contemporary look. Dressing the display cabinets is striated water glass, one of dozens of glass options offered by the cabinetry specialists.
builder that demands only the best from its tradespeople and partners. And the best is what Norcraft has provided, not only in the kitchen and bathrooms, but also in the lower level with its superb bar area. The maple cabinets match those on the main floor while
Built-in features such as wine bottle storage in the island and wine glass storage in the bar show other ways in which the cabinetry can be customized according to individual needs and desires. The bar is strategically placed between the great room and the kitchen with its abundance of storage space and fine finishing details. On the backsplash, the ceramic subway tiles are installed vertically instead of horizontally for a truly unique look. “A display home gives us the opportunity to showcase the different products to which we have access and show different ways in which they can be used,” notes Koop. In this home, the builder used a solid surface quartz product instead of granite to highlight a material that at a comparable price point offers different options in colouring and pattern. The counter’s finely finished edges say something else about Irwin Homes. This is a

a change-up in the hardware adds a distinctive twist to the final effect. But, most of all, nothing was downgraded in this lower level. The bar features a combination of open shelving, built-in wine storage and glass-in cabinets that rivals the cabinetry on the main floor. This is all in keeping with Irwin Homes’ philosophy of maintaining high standards throughout every square inch of their homes. Accordingly, the lower level entertainment unit and fireplace combination are just as exquisitely designed and finely finished as the main floor counterpart. No detail is overlooked. Woodclad posts match those on the exterior of the house, windows are large and evenly spaced and the stain on the entertainment unit—both upstairs and downstairs—matches the cabinetry perfectly. It’s this kind of attention that homeowners can expect when they build with Irwin Homes. And because the builder truly knows how to listen to his customers needs, tastes and ideas, clients know they will get the home they want. Working closely together, the Irwin team takes pride in realizing perfectly everything the homeowner envisioned, down to the very last detail. “It’s not a house, it’s a home,” notes Koop. “We take care of everything as if it were our own.”

Custom Building’s Full Potential For most visitors to this former K Streu display home, the tigerwood flooring was something new. For many, the hood fan over the island was also an option they had never considered. Some might never have thought of having a two-sided fireplace, or eschewing a mantel for a wooden frame. This is only a sampling from a whole world of possibilities Kurt and Heather Streu bring to the table for their clients. When building a custom home, the possibilities are endless. But only when clients know what options are available can they fully maximize the potential of this process. That kind of knowledge and expertise can only be gained through years of experience working with different products and creating inspired designs. And, as Kurt Streu points out, possibilities are always changing as new materials and technologies come onto the market. But after 20 years in business, he knows better than to jump onto the bandwagon before something has proven itself. And most importantly, every option must be evaluated according to how well it fulfills a client’s tastes, needs and lifestyle. It is this combination of inspiration and insight on which homeowners can rely when K. Streu Homes guides them through the process of building their custom dream home.

Ahead of the Curve It was not only a curved stone wall that wowed visitors to the last Health Science Centre Lottery home. It was the way that Maric Homes always manages to be ahead of the curve. In fact, the home proved to be a winner in more ways than one. Anyone who had the opportunity to visit the home knows that the design was all about “luxury and innovation.” It’s the company’s tagline and something Maric Homes takes very seriously. Just ask the people at Superlite. “Maric is always trying to do something different that will make a house unique,” says Kari Knight. She and the Maric team put their heads together to select the stunning spun crystal orbs in the stairwell of the HSC Lottery home. “Whenever one of the professionals from Superlite and I sit down together, we’re always looking for something fresh that will make a dramatic statement,” says Caroline Maric of Maric Homes. Staggered at three different heights, the light also creates an interesting pattern on the wall while bringing out the tones of the cultured stone. Always innovating, Maric Homes was not satisfied with repeating the cultured ledgestone wall in their next showhome, no matter how successful it had been. Instead, the team took the concept a few steps further. In their 127 Bridlewood two-storey in Bridgwater Forest, the builder vertically applied real stone, flat with a drywall detail for a more modern look. In the kitchen, the chrome and tall opal glass of the light fixtures are consistent with the contemporary design of the home’s interior. “It’s not what you expect when you walk up the drive,” says Maric. In keeping with Bridgwater Forest’s architectural guidelines, the exterior exudes a Prairie Style, complete with cultured stone, exposed rafters and James Hardie siding.
But the interior tells another story. In the entrance two maple pillars are a telling introduction to a space that veers from transitional to modern. And in true Maric fashion, the second and lower levels are as impressive as the main floor. Each area features the same builtin fireplaces, Caesarstone and maple cabinetry.
Another striking feature of this home is the punches of apricot orange that accent the colour scheme. In the ensuite, a wide-open vanity with double vessel sinks sits below a wall finished with large rectangular orange tiles. A trio of unique light sconces is affixed right to the mirror, with polished nickel traversing the etched linear glass shades. “We wanted to do something different from placing lights across the top,” notes Knight. Equally distinctive is the choice of lighting in the bedroom, a shade within a shade that goes by the name of silver organza. It is just the right translucent complement to the bold orange backdrop of the bed. Brick orange is the accent colour for the 2190-square foot bungalow at 71 Autumnview in Waverley West’s Southpointe. The builder once again used a vertical stone application, this time for the cultured stone surrounding the fireplace. The effect is nothing short of stunning.
spring 2010 | STYLE MANITOBA | 99
A sleek maple detail completes the design without competing with the striking look of the stone. Meanwhile, huge windows flood the room in natural light keeping the open design of the home bright and airy. In the kitchen, the cabinets’ clean lines continue the contemporary design. Pantry doors and the hood fan over the island combine glass and stainless steel to create crisp accents. Superlite drew from this combination when selecting the chrome light rail above the sink. The two ribbed glass pendants throw bright light on this working area, while undercabinet lighting illuminates the Caesar countertops and recessed lighting brings out the chocolate brown of the cabinetry. Nor does the creative design stop here. The very heart of this home is in the lower level, where a walkout leads to the lakeside property. In parallel to the large, open concept of the main floor, another beautiful fireplace is situated close to a stunning bar. All the elements create a comfortable family-oriented home perfect for entertaining. But it is what the builder does with these elements that never ceases to astonish. Always pushing the limits, always pursing a higher level of excellence, Maric Homes has earned a reputation as a trendsetter in the industry. It is no wonder that Manitobans are consistently eager to see what this innovator has to offer. A visit to a Maric showhome starts with
anticipation for the unexpected and ends with the satisfaction of seeing the realization of yet another ingenious design.

SunSet Bay Estates is a new cottage community on the eastern shore of Lake Winnipeg, just south of Grand Beach. This new community will be built on what was formerly privately owned land. The expected total lot count is anticipated at 166, with 75 lots already sold in phase one of the development, according to Perry McDonald, one of the three developers who are experienced cottagers themselves. “This is a fantastic area, with sandy public beaches and lots with established trees. And thanks to the rise in the land, even the back lots have spectacular lake views,” says McDonald. “In Manitoba, cottages are usually handed down from generation to generation, so a development like this where you can buy a lot and build your own cottage is priceless. You can build your dream cottage here, and then watch it increase in value over the years.” SunSet Bay Estates is an easy one-hour drive north of Winnipeg up Highway 59. It is an ideal base of operation offering the best of all worlds — lakefront property, west sunsets, privacy, serenity and close access to the full spectrum of conveniences, amenities and activities in the eastern beaches of Lake Winnipeg. It’s a great location for health-conscious individuals with many healthy activities nearby and close access to medical facilities. There is an excellent golf course close at hand, and a planned extension of the Red River North walking trail will see it stretch from Beaconia to Grand Beach, which means cottagers will be able to walk to Grand Beach and back. McDonald says every lot backs onto green space and has beach access, something young families will adore. There is a nearby boat
launch for those with boats on trailers. The development will have an environmentallyfriendly low pressure sewer system, which operates by having a holding tank on your property connected to a lagoon by means of a pipe and pump network. This allows for year round cottage use. MTS high speed Internet services will be available to the lot line. There will be a number of building requirements for cottages so that the quality and ambience of the area is assured over time. Bungalow cottages must be 1,200 sq. ft. or larger, while
two-storey designs must be 1,450 sq. ft. or larger. No cottage may be higher than 35 feet off the ground. All cottages must conform to building code standards and fire regulations. Garages can be 30 by 30 feet, large enough to accommodate a vehicle and a boat on a trailer. “There is no time limit to start construction of your new cottage, but once you do start building, you will have two years to completely close in the exterior,” says McDonald. “We know that many people will enjoy building their cottage as a weekend project, so there is no time limit on when they have to finish the interior.” The development falls under the umbrella of the R.M. of St. Clements, and McDonald expects the area cottagers to form an association. A Clear Decision By Kelly Gray The choice to go with replacement windows over keeping those old existing units is an easy one given the simple math and the number of reputable manufacturers. With the cost of natural gas expected to rise and a variety of incentives now on the market, this could be one of the best times to consider replacing your old windows. Indeed, windows have come a long way since many of Manitoba’s houses were first constructed - the energy savings and the aesthetic upgrade can be substantial. In my own home - a 1,600-square foot 100-year-old wood frame structure - we realized an immediate 20 percent saving when we ditched the old single pane units and their accompanying storms for double pane, PVC casements and single hung units. The payback has taken place over the past five years, with huge non-monetary benefits like comfort and upgraded appearance just icing on the cake. Looking back, we can’t see why we didn’t do it sooner. How easy can it be? Consider that Manitoba Hydro offers a program of low interest loans to get new windows into older housing stock. Under the PowerSmart initiative, homeowners who are customers of the utility can borrow up to $7500 with no money down. Payments are made on your monthly bill for work performed by your choice of contractor or even if you do it yourself. The options on windows are nearly as varied as the housing styles they grace. For example,
manufacturers and their distributors offer wood, metal-clad wood, fibreglass and PVC, the most popular window product in the Manitoba market. There are also products that feature double pane and triple pane glass with gas inserts to reduce temperature conductivity between glass panes.

Local manufacturers understand Manitoba’s unique climate “The spacer bar is also highly important,” says JELD-WEN Canada’s Winnipeg-based Territory Sales Manager Paul Lanteigne. He points out that while a window is 80 percent glass, the remaining 20 percent of the product is no less important. “Our spacer bar (Super Spacer) is the warmest on the market, a good thing given the extreme temperatures we have to endure in Manitoba. It also means a low incidence of condensation between the panes,” he notes, adding that if this should happen, JELD-WEN has crews that will make it right. In the market, JELD-WEN is known as a global manufacturer with facilities in 22 countries. In Canada they have three window manufacturing facilities, including one in Winnipeg where JELD-WEN’s plant employs more than 350 people. “By being local, we can produce products made with an understanding of our unique climate conditions. Canada’s largest private window manufacturer, All Weather operates plants in Edmonton and Mississauga with branches from coast to coast. Indeed, the company’s maxim “ All Canadian made for all Canadians” reflects the commitment they have had to the market over the company’s more than 30 years in the business. “We don’t just build windows, we build trust,” says Bob Neufeld, a Sales Entrepreneur at All Weather’s Winnipeg operation. He reports that when the BC government looked for a window company to tackle the leaky condo challenge facing hundreds of residents on the lower mainland a few years back, they called All Weather Windows. The same is true of customers high up in the Arctic who call for All Weather products that can meet the needs of an environment where poor windows can result in catastrophe. “Our plants are CSA Certified. This means that inspectors routinely show up to do random audits of the manufacturing process and the finished products. When we say these windows will perform, we have respected third parties that make certain it is so.” tion to signify JELD-WEN’s compliance with the very best standards in manufacturing, distribution and marketing of Energy Star rated products. JELD-WEN has a complete line, from casements to specialty products, as well as a complete selection of entry systems to meet the unique needs of home architecture. Moreover, JELD-WEN products come with well-considered hardware features that keep the seal tight and secure to minimize air leakage and infiltration. Lanteigne reports that JELD-WEN also offers a great selection of industry leading wood windows. These come in a variety of species with 41 colours, as well as three copper clad finishes. “Wood is still considered a high-end product that delivers a lot of quality,” he says, noting that wood is ideal in settings where customers want not only a warm feel, but want to match interior decor features as well. The company even offers a sill mat and blue skin system to keep windows looking as good as the day they were installed. “We are well known as a company that stands behind our products. In fact, JELD-WEN vinyl windows carry a limited lifetime warrantee with a full two years on labour. The Warrantee is also transferable up to 10 years. Builders continue to choose JELD-WEN as their product supplier because of our willingness to develop relationships that don’t leave contractors with empty promises. We simply make great products and then stand behind them.” Committed to the Canadian market Another name to know when considering replacement units is All Weather Windows.
Innovative is the company’s range of HyDystinction PVC units that are vinyl on the interior and metal clad on the exterior for great looks and maximum durability. “These look good with stonework and stucco,” notes Neufeld. “We also offer innovations like Drip Lip, a product that was of special interest to BC when it was discovered that hundreds of condominiums had sustained considerable water damage. With Drip Lip, water is drained off and won’t come back inside.” Further innovation has been brought to the market with Apex, the company’s latest introduction. Over the years, All Weather saw that spring 2010 | STYLE MANITOBA | 107
According to Yarrow president Michael Neufeld, the idea was to add a line that provided a fresh element to their customers who have been looking to the company since 1946 for quality and craftsmanship. “The availability of aluminium clad wood materials means a low maintenance exterior finish that is part and parcel of the options that homeowners can choose. We chose the Marvin line because of its build-to-order capability and the fact that Marvin offers the affordability that the majority of the public values, not to mention the quality of its products and the selection,” he says.
traditional window systems had their limitations. They developed V-weld Technology as a response. With this new technology, all joints are welded together, meaning no need for gaskets or silicone to seal the windows, virtually eliminating air and water leaks from combination windows. With V-weld, each window opening performs as an individual window even though V-weld windows are built in combination.
“The V-weld is also easier to install, offering an advantage to dealers and contractors,” says Neufeld. Affordable build-to-order capability Yarrow Sash and Door of Winnipeg is creating news with its addition of Marvin Windows and Doors to its product line. New will be wood and extruded aluminium clad doors and windows from the Warroad, Minnesota-based industry leading manufacturer.
Is it Time to Enhance Your View?
He points to Marvin’s venting picture window and the fully accessible Ultimate Casement window as real innovations in the market. Consider the Ultimate Casement that features a revolutionary wash mode that makes cleaning the exterior simple and effective. As well, all Marvin Windows meet or exceed federal Energy Star ratings with features such as Low E II coatings and argon filled insulated glass. According to Yarrow’s Neufeld, the choice has never been more clear for homeowners, architects or designers who can look to window products to deliver an edge like never before. Whether its energy efficiency, great looks or economical replacements in older housing stock, new windows do it all.

Simple Elegance By Christine Hanlon
Graceful oval shapes artfully draw the eye upward or downward depending on the orientation of the satin etched opal glass. “The chandelier is also available in a nine or 24 light option,” notes Brett Robinson, Branch Manager at Robinson Lighting in Winnipeg. He adds that the unique arched supports that cradle the curved glass come in olde bronze as well as chrome. The dining room is not the only possible setting for these elegant yet contemporary light fixtures. Thanks to their versatile styling, they are ideal for any room in the house, from the foyer to the breakfast nook to the bedroom. In fact, this collection encompasses 22 different options, including wall sconces, mini-pendants, a desk lamp and a table lamp. “It’s one of our fullest families of fixtures,” says Robinson. He adds that it is one of the newer families to join the vast selection on display in Robinson Lighting’s 10,000 square-foot Winnipeg showroom. Every year the family-owned company scopes out the newest crop of lighting to be introduced in the spring. “It’s amazing how many people drop in to see what’s new,” says Robinson. By keeping their selection fresh, Robinson Lighting continues to provide its customers with the widest possible options for lighting their home.

Flexibility & Choice The beautiful clean lines of this Juno sectional combine with the modular options of the Elements collection to offer the ultimate in functional solutions for the home. “With Dufresne, you have flexibility and choice,” explains Damon Martin, manager of the Ellice location, one of Dufresne’s six Manitoba stores. The Elements collection offers such a versatile array of components that the homeowner can
virtually design a sectional themselves, to meet their personal taste as well as space and lifestyle needs. The collection offers myriad pieces to mix and match in any configuration. The modular components have been engineered to connect together seamlessly. “And you can choose from 300 leathers and fabrics,” adds Martin. The results are stylish and personalized. And with knowledgeable and experienced sales

In fact, more than half of the furniture Dufresne offers is made in Canada, including a range of stationary sofas from Toronto’s Decor-Rest. “You can really change the look of a sofa depending on the fabric application,” notes Martin. “At Dufresne, we’re all about custom order.”

design&decor The Wow Factor
The dramatically curved back and distinctive arms of this recamier-style sofa by Bugatti will inject a wow factor into any home. “It’s one of those pieces that will make quite an impact in a room,” agrees Richard Mandarano of Contessa Fine Furniture. “It really stands out.” Chrome legs subtly set the sofa off the ground, for a floating look. “It’s finely tailored and very detailed,” adds Mandarano. “It looks great from every angle.” Also available with wooden legs and in hundreds of domestic and imported leathers, fabrics and detailing, this piece can just as easily project old Hollywood glamour as it can complement a modern setting. In fact, the version to be featured in Contessa’s showroom will combine coordinating charcoal and slate fabrics with a Swarovski crystal in place of a button. Created by in-house designers and handcrafted using traditional Italian workmanship, Bugatti Design furniture is made in Canada by a company that knows how to marry quality, comfort and style. “We’re opening a Bugatti gallery in our showroom in late spring,” notes Mandarano. He adds that this will allow customers to see a wider range of the company’s sectionals, sofa and chairs, in all sizes and styles.
Proper Placement
In lighting a home, proper placement is just as important as selecting the right bulb and fixture. “The recessed lights in this kitchen are placed just close enough for the light to graze the cabinets,” says Norm Secter of Total Lighting. He adds that today’s homeowners tend to make a substantial investment in beautiful cabinetry but then place the lights too far away to bring out the grain and colour. At the same time, improper placement creates shadow on the workspaces. Here, the counters receive additional lighting from undercabinet lighting. “We used xenon lights because they are cooler and last a lot longer than halogens,” notes Secter. Highlow switches give the option of full illumination or a muted setting, perfect for late evening forays into the kitchen. On the other hand, the pendant lights overtop of the island are as much decorative as they are functional. “They define this space as an eating area,” explains Secter. Or, he adds, they can be used as situational lighting for such purposes as reading the newspaper. Placement is important. That’s why just like for this Discovery display home, the professionals at Total Lighting sit down with builders and/or homeowners to create a lighting plan that works with each particular home.

design&decor Outdoor Kitchen Oasis
Perfect for the outdoor gourmet, this Napoleon grill is available with a selection of modular components and cabinets. “You can just have a grill,” says Helen Peters of Classic Fireplaces. “Or you can mix and match to build your own outdoor kitchen.” Options include different configurations of under grill drawers, fridge, propane or universal storage cabinets and a waste drawer with paper towel holder. All components are made of powder-coated galvanized steel with stainless steel doors and drawers. The modules are compatible with a number of Napoleon grill heads including side burners available with or without roll-top lid. A sizzle-zone option offers very intense heat from 0 to 1800 degrees in seconds. “It’s great for searing,” says Peters. “Then you can move it to the regular burners to finish it off.” Like the side burners, the grills can also come with a bottom infrared burner or sizzle zone, as well as infra-red rear burners for rotisserie. Other Napoleon accessories for the outdoor kitchen include charcoal trays, stainless steel griddles and smoker tubes for the grills. “The more features you have, the better the taste!” notes Peters. She adds that Classic Fireplaces offers a full range of grilling products from wood chips and barbecue accessories to seasonings and sauces.

Make Your Home Work for You
We rely on technology to enhance our lifestyle. The cellular phone and IPod in our pockets may be an essential part of that, but in the end, nothing is more important to us than our home. But because every home and every family is different, there is no one-size-fits-all solution to a household’s electronics needs. That’s where ART comes in. An acronym for Advanced Residential Technologies, this division of Advance Electronics is devoted to providing custom home entertainment and automation – everything from properly installing a television over a fireplace to providing a fully integrated home audio-visual and automation system. “Basically, anything that is wired in a home, we have the ability to control,” says Joel Bouvier, Manager of ART. “We will meet with clients, review their needs, give them a list of possibilities and then design and install a system that does what they want.” Lighting, thermostats, motorized shades, whole home sound systems, gas fireplaces, garage doors and more can be controlled from a simple key pad on a wall anywhere in the house or remotely by computer or Smart Phone. Bouvier points out that even something as simple as automating light control can drastically improve lifestyle. Imagine never having to come home to a dark house. The system automatically turns certain lights on after the sun goes down, no matter what the season. Or think of the convenience of being able to turn off all the lights in the house simply by pressing one button.
ART recently installed a system for a homeowner whose family always forgot to lock the doors before turning in for the night. Thanks to a system of specialty locks, one button is now all it takes for the home to be secured. Some people even elect to have their home alarm systems, lighting and thermostat tied into the system. When they leave the house, all they have to do to lower the temperature and secure the home is to lock the door. “And anyone knows how to do that,” says Bouvier. He adds that like television remote controls, home automation systems have become increasingly easy to use. “They allow you to do complicated things at the touch of a button because all the complicated technology is already done by us in the background,” Bouvier explains. The specialized staff of ART make the installation process seamless. At the same time, the use of wireless technology has opened up the options for developing systems in existing homes. “All of our installation staff are very experienced,” adds Bouvier. “Even when we’re not using wireless, there are very few places that we can’t get wired.”
home automation a lot more affordable,” confirms Bouvier. The trend started with the home theatre. And as the media room became something more accessible, homeowners began to change the way they invested in audio-visual technology. Today, says Bouvier, many families are installing a scaled down system in the master bedroom so that parents can watch movies in bed while their children enjoy themselves in the home theatre room. With life as busy and stressful as it is today, homeowners are looking for comfort and convenience. They want to know that their home audio-visual and automation system is reliable and works as it should. Says Bouvier: “Prompt and efficient customer service is very important to Advance Electronics, especially to the ART team and its customers.” The ART team prides itself on being leaders in electronics.
Of course, in a new home build, the options are almost limitless. And with all components hidden except for the television and the DVD player, interior design is unaffected. Meanwhile, thanks to advances in electronics over the past three years, the options for automation are more exciting than ever. Pricing has changed as well. “Costs have come down significantly in the last few years, making 117

Easyrock is the hottest building and renovation material going these days. The synthetic but extremely authentic-looking rock face has been moving off shelves at an overwhelming rate this summer, says Grant Jehle, president of Fort Distributors Ltd.
One Hot Product – Three Great Displays
“We’re really impressed with this product and so are our customers!” With Easyrock being so popular, Fort Distributors has partnered with Durabuilt Windows & Doors Design Centre, where they have opened an additional showroom in Winnipeg so Manitobans can have easier access to view product styles and colours. “The showroom at Durabuilt is wonderful,” says Jehle. “You can really see the Easyrock up close and how it works with the windows, doors and frames. It really gives the customer a great idea of what it will look like on their home or cottage.” Determined to give Manitobans even easier access to Easyrock, Jehle has also built an impressive showroom display at Form Design Centre. Customers can also see and purchase Easyrock products right on site at Fort Distributors. “We can’t say enough about Easyrock,” says Jehle, who remarks that most of his customers are installing the product themselves very successfully. “It’s easy to do, it’s affordable, and it looks amazing!” Easyrock panels weigh only two and half pounds each, and require just eight screws to fasten to walls. Each panel is joined with a lap indent to make portions seamless in appearance. Screws are covered with caulking (Fort Distributors offers a selection of eight colours), making them virtually invisible when the installation is complete. Jehle comments that the product is also extremely forgiving, making it an excellent choice for all skill levels, from the earnest novice to professional tradesmen. Fort Distributors also offers a variety of accessories, such as ledger, trim, 90-degree corners, and keystones to provide custom touches. And Easyrock can be applied directly over existing stucco, lap siding or brick.

“From kitchens and living rooms, to dens, bars, restaurants and lobbies – Easyrock can definitely suit them all,” says Jehle. “We’re really excited. Our partnership with Durabuilt Windows & Doors takes it to another level where customers can preview more options and come away with products that work perfectly together,” he adds. Jehle notes that many have found it extremely beneficial to see the windows and doors within the Easyrock panels and get a firsthand look at how they seam together. Rebuild, Renew Devin and Keri Latimer knew that rebuilding the entire main floor of their centuryold home would be a big project. But when they met All Canadian Renovation’s Marcel Verrier at a home renovation show, they had a good feeling. In fact, after interviewing several other companies, they returned to Marcel and entrusted him with the project. “We sat down with Marcel and discussed what we wanted,” says Keri. She adds that they have several friends whose renovation projects ran far over budget. Verrier assured them that All Canadian always stays close to their original estimates. And that is exactly what happened. “It was really close,” says Keri. “There were no surprises.” In fact, the Latimers got exactly what they wanted: a new main floor that meets all their needs. Today, a kitchen sits where the bedroom used to be, and a bathroom fills the space previously occupied by both the former kitchen and bathroom. Marcel listened carefully and then provided a sketch of the new layout, recalls Keri. Initially, the couple had planned to hire a designer, but they soon decided this was unnecessary. All Canadian Renovations (ACR) created the design and referred the Latimers to a number of suppliers where they selected the materials and finishes for the renovation.
Meanwhile, ACR brought in an engineer to determine whether the renovation involved any load-bearing walls. After receiving the go-ahead, work was underway. A fireplace in the middle of the working area was removed, all ceilings were leveled and the plumbing and electrical were brought up to code. The reconfiguration also involved the removal of several interior walls and the reinsulation of at least one exterior wall. ACR then built new walls to enclose the bathroom and laundry room. More than twice the size of the original bathroom, the new space accommodates the six-foot bathtub the owners preferred over the standard five-foot size. A heated tile floor brings the comfort level up another notch, while a blue jean coloured countertop and tub surround complete the attractive décor. As important as it was to have this new bathroom, the kitchen was an even greater priority. There is even room for an island with an eating counter, as well as a separate more formal dining area. A new hardwood floor was installed throughout. While the renovations were taking place, the Latimers and their two children ate upstairs on the second floor where they kept a mini bar fridge. The main floor was sealed off but the family could still come and go or head to the backyard to the barbecue. As members of the band Nathan, the couple was on tour at one point during the summer of the renovation. “We had a good sketch of things beforehand and things seemed to be going according to plan,” says Devin, adding that he had no qualms about leaving the renovators to do their work. “We were really comfortable with the process.” Comfortable also describes how the Latimers now feel on their main floor where the couple and their two children, aged one and a half and three and a half, finally have room to move around. As they sit at the kitchen island looking out onto the maple shaker-style cabinetry, they can’t help but smile. They now have the home that works for them.
Accordingly, All Canadian added two new windows in the corner where the new sink is situated. The bright open kitchen now features 121

When we changed the flooring in our home this summer, little did I know what a profound difference it would make. Suddenly, everything from the furniture to the paint on the walls took on a new—and definitely more appealing—look. Who would have thought something we walked all over would make such an impact? Yes, we had taken our floor for granted all these years and now we wondered why the epiphany had taken so long to arrive. To this day, I can’t help but look down on our new floor and smile. It continues to give me pleasure months after it was installed. Now that we have the floor that’s “right” for us, I realize the importance of this omnipresent backdrop to our everyday lives. Fortunately, Manitoba is replete with excellent flooring specialists who are continually expanding their offerings and perfecting their craft. The following are among the best in the business. A Step in the Right Direction When homeowners decide to have a new solid surface floor installed, the steps are often an afterthought. Yet, nothing makes a home look more finished than when the steps match the flooring. Nor do the steps have to be a complicated or costly addition to the project. Thanks to ReadyStep’s one step stair system, that finishing touch has never been easier, says Tim Pariseau of Curtis Carpets. In fact, the system is better than using traditional hardwood flooring on stairs. Each tread is custom-made from a ¾-inch glued up solid wood pane. This allows the top and nosing to be one solid piece, which resists squeaks and movement. Furthermore, Ready Step can be installed in a quarter of the time it takes for hardwood planks to be applied to stair tops. “It makes it look cleaner and better,” says Pariseau. “And it’s less expensive than putting hardwood on the steps and buying the nosings.”
Are You Floored Yet? By Christine Hanlon
He adds that ReadyStep can custom colour any species of wood to match perfectly with the hardwood flooring. And for those who still prefer the plank look on their stairs, the company offers a micro-bevelled routered design that won’t compromise stability. Wave designs are also available for a truly unique appearance.
Along with tread caps, the Manitoba company can provide risers as well as stringers, both capped and uncapped. The system also works for other products besides hardwood. When homeowners come to Curtis Carpets for a carpet, ceramic tile or DuraCeramic floor, they can have the stairs finished to match. The product is inserted into a wooden pan that frames the tread and is capped with the desired nosing. “It makes the house look a lot more finished,” says Pariseau, who has arranged this feature for many clients over the years. He adds that ReadyStep also manufactures a range of flushmounted registers that can be stained in any colour to match the flooring. All products carry a 10-year warranty on the finish and manufactured parts. While tiles and planks are an integral part of the flooring equation, the team at Curtis Carpets knows that there is more to creating a truly finished home. Knowledgeable salespeople with expert advice guide customers through the process while experienced installers ensure that everything turns out just as it was meant to be.

A World Class Flooring Experience The Floor Show opened its new showroom a year ago with the intention of bringing to Winnipeg a design center that provides a level of products and a service that had previously not been available in our fair city. At the dawn of its first anniversary, this mission is successfully unfolding. Designers and discerning homeowners need no longer look to Toronto or the U.S. to source unique and/or leading edge flooring and tile. “There’s nothing that they can’t get here anymore,” says Dan Rosenblat, Vice President at The Floor Show. “Sophisticated consumers that value style are looking for something different. We wanted to offer Winnipeg one solid, well-staffed and managed design centre with interesting, higher end materials.” It’s not just wide plank hand-scraped hardwood, it’s materials such as hand-made cast concrete tile like the one pictured here embracing this entertainment unit and fireplace surround. Available in virtually every imaginable colour,
each slab arrives at The Floor Show in pieces as large as four feet by three feet. “They are cut and installed with diligent care on site,” says Rosenblat. All members of the staff, from sales people to installers, have been selected for their specialized expertise and their ability to meet the expectations of a discerning clientele. “Even our delivery staff has been brought up to speed on how to handle these specialty products and understand the expectations of our clients,” notes Rosenblat. The Floor Show also offers an exclusive and ever-changing selection of natural stone, including quartz, travertine, limestone, marble and slate. Seen in such applications as feature walls, these exquisite products are an increasingly popular investment for homeowners wishing to make a fashion forward statement in their homes.
125
“We certainly have products available at all price points, however, one of our strengths is offering products to a discerning segment of today’s market,” Rosenblat points out. “These are people who want something unique that hasn’t been seen before.” Natural slate ledgestone is one ideal candidate for creating this “wow” factor. But it’s only one of many possibilities now open to designers and homeowner, thanks to The Floor Show’s relentless pursuit of the latest in trends and leading edge designs. It’s all part of a commitment to settle for nothing less than being an industry leader in all product categories. This combination of exclusive products and the best team in the business makes a visit to The Floor Show a truly world class shopping experience.

Ultimate Shopping Experience Despite owning the longest-running flooring store in the province, Bill Knight has never been content to sit on his laurels. Now, Western Canada’s largest showroom is renovating to accommodate an expanded hardwood and tile area. “Most homes are putting in more hard surface flooring,” notes Robyn Goldstine, Sales Manager at Bill Knight Flooring. “So we’ve added more hardwood and more tile. We also have the largest area rug selection in Winnipeg.” She adds that as people pay more and more attention to their ensuites, the demand for tile and accenting listello is also increasing, and Bill Knight Flooring has been responding accordingly. Nor has carpet been neglected, a product that is still the number one choice for bedrooms and lower levels. In response, Bill Knight Flooring is launching a new StainMaster Flooring Centre. “We’re going to be able to offer carpets that were not available to us before,” says Goldstine. “At the same time we’re creating the ultimate shopping experience for customers.” With its simple good-better-best buying system, the StainMaster Flooring Centre makes it easier than ever to understand performance so homeowners can focus on finding the right colour and style for their home. At the same time, showroom sales associates will be professionally trained to assist customers with expert advice and extensive product and installation knowledge. Bill Knight Flooring is among a select group of retailers chosen by StainMaster for their high standard and commitment to customer satisfaction, shopping experience, selection and service. StainMaster insists its customers have an exceptional shopping experience and they knew they could count on Bill Knight Flooring to deliver.
In a Class of Its Own Model Hardwood does not want to be the largest; they would rather be the best. That is why the Quebec-based manufacturer has always focused on quality over quantity. says Maggie Berthiaume, Residential/Builder Manager for The Floor Show. Clearly visible overhead signs indicate separate categories of flooring, allowing consumers to effortlessly locate products of interest. The layout is enhanced by abundant lighting and the easily manoeuvrable flow of the showroom. Every sample contains all the necessary information about each product, while the Colour Visions Trend Wall showcases examples of mixing and matching by colour and texture. The showroom is punctuated by zones where consumers can sit down to consult with a salesperson. Over the past year, the Floor Show has added a number of specialized sales staff, carefully selected from the best in the industry. “They are extremely knowledgeable and experienced,” notes Berthiaume. They will provide advice, guiding homeowners to the right products for their unique project.

Flooring for a Lifetime When speaking with Paul Friesen of Heartland Wood & Cork Floor, you never quite know where the conversation is going to go. Not because he is as scatterbrained as his wife accuses him of being, but because few have the breadth of experience he has with flooring, having literally been “raised on rolls of carpet and vinyl.” “My Dad was taking me to work when I was 7 years old and I loved it because coffee break meant I got a bottle of Hires Root Beer with the “get one free” under the cap. I had a run of six in a row,” he reminisces. “But how Dad managed to remain sane, teach me to work, and keep me from destroying the jobsite was beyond me. Looking back I can only admire his work ethic, patience, and love.” Thirty-five years later, Friesen has just about figured out how to keep from “destroying the jobsite” and now leads Winnipeg’s only dedicated hardwood and cork flooring company, Heartland Wood & Cork Floor Co. Unlike many in the industry, Heartland focuses its attention solely on hardwood, cork flooring, and refinishing hardwood. Friesen’s staff is among the best the industry has to offer and many of Heartland’s craftsmen specialize in only one aspect of the flooring process. “I have people who only install hardwood, people who only stain and refinish hardwood, and people who specialize in glue-down cork flooring,” he explains Word gets around and Heartland’s reputation has attracted the attention of flooring suppliers from around the world. “I like to brag that we have companies approaching us to promote their product, not because we have a huge market share, but because they want to be associated with a company that has a reputation as positive as ours,” says Friesen. “I love Heartland,” he continues, “we truly care for our clients, we are capable of just about anything to do with a wood or cork floor, and we try hard to have our clients enjoy the overall experience.” The long list of client referrals certainly attests to Heartland’s success in living up to their motto “Craftsmanship and service you thought were history.”

True Custom Cabinetry By Christine Hanlon
When the homeowners of this stunning contemporary home wanted truly custom cabinetry, they turned to Heirloom Cabinetry to execute the project. Having hired Barry Penner and Larry Koop in the past, they knew that Heirloom was more than up to the task. One of the cabinetry experts’ preoccupations was to tweak and adjust the designers’ concept drawings both to site conditions and to changes wanted by the homeowners. “Considerable time and energy had been spent on the design,” recalls Penner, adding that in adapting the design, they always stayed very close to the original vision. The designers had developed a palette of colours and textures that would coordinate with the other materials in the home. “We helped to develop that too,” notes Penner. 130 | STYLE MANITOBA | spring 2010
“We showed the designers and homeowners what we have to offer and which materials look better with certain finishes.” For instance, Heirloom worked closely with the customers to develop the right sort of tone in the kitchen cabinetry. “We probably went through four or five samples during the development process,” Penner recalls. The result – a deep brown, almost black, lacquer with a low sheen – coordinates perfectly with the flooring and the granite. Throughout the development of the design, Heirloom offered many other suggestions, ideas and options to assist the designers in their work. Door heights had to line up with the top of the refrigerator, and the built-in wall ovens and warming drawers had to align perfectly as well.
130
“It is important to know what appliances are being used before the design process even begins,” notes Penner.
Then, upon moving into the actual space to implement the design, it became apparent that certain alterations would have to be made. In the end, the shape of the island was modified considerably. Although the design called for a table extension, when Heirloom and the homeowners took a serious look at the actual space, they decided that this configuration would be much too large for the room. “It’s an evolution,” explains Penner. “It’s not just a cut and dry process.” In accordance with the adjustments, the island includes a two-sided eating counter without sacrificing storage space. The area under the seating area features working cabinets for storing infrequently used items. Even in this less visible space, Heirloom Cabinetry carefully aligned the grain of the rift cut oak so that it would flow continuously from left to right. This is accomplished by custom-ordering sequenced veneers from the manufacturer. In the ensuite a different approach was used to create the same effect. This time, Heirloom was working with a textured veneer product so the result is even more obvious. One continuous herringbone pattern flows over the fronts of the drawers and doors. Above the recessed portion of the vanity, a tall tower cabinet features stainless steel and acid etched glass doors. On the bar unit in the lower level, the custom cabinetmaker was again able to control the sequencing of the veneers in order to enhance the flow of the technically enhanced wood fiber product used to complete the cabinets. “A lot of these products we brought to the table as options to help the homeowners achieve what they were looking for,” notes Penner. For those desiring to obtain precisely what they want, true custom cabinetry is the only suitable approach. Heirloom Cabinetry can even create custom furniture for homeowners who cannot find exactly what they need from a retail store. In this home, the modern storage unit below the television features a metal flake automotivetype finish with glass sliding doors back-painted in the same metal flake. Created by Heirloom Cabinetry, this sleek piece of furniture proves, once again, that when working with true custom craftsmanship, anything is possible.

Kitchen&Bath Custom Showers
With the ever-increasing popularity of large European-style bathrooms, more and more homeowners are looking for products to showcase their design ideas. “One thing they may want is for their shower to be the focal point of the bathroom,” notes Jason Wells of Wellstyle. With more than 12 years of experience in the bathroom industry, that is exactly what Wells and his team provide. Wellstyle installs custom frameless shower doors for the ultimate in finishing details. The team also advises clients on the best layout/design for the shower glass, as well as the proper glass hardware to complement their bathroom fixtures. “Sometimes the little details get missed, and that’s where our experience comes into play,” he notes. Wells points out that the company can provide shower doors ranging from standard kits to custom steam enclosures. In addition to the shower glass, Wellstyle is also certified in the fabrication and installation of acrylic solid surfaces such as Corian. Used for both countertops and vertical application of shower/tub walls, acrylic solid surface is a great choice for the bathroom. “The beautiful thing is its sense of warmth,” says Wells. He adds that because acrylic solid surface material is non-porous, it doesn’t promote the growth of bacteria, mould, or mildew, making it a great choice for the bathroom.
The Perfect Kitchen Sink
It’s hard to beat a combination that can fill a pot and wash a dish of virtually any size. “This sink is great if you have a large item to wash,” says Gord Graveline, Manager of the Robinson Bath Center. Because the two basins are separated by a divide that is lower than the upper ledge, Kohler’s Indio double sink can be filled as one for maximum capacity. Or use the basins separately, one for a custom colander and the other for a cutting board. These two accessories are even included with the sink! Constructed from durable cast iron, the Indio is available in 23 different colours, including high fashion vapour shades and bold tones such a Rousillon Red. Guaranteed not to chip, crack or burn, the surface is highly resistant to stains. Decks are available for a one or two-hole faucet including this specialty Karbon articulating unit, which also comes as a wall mount. Ideal for filling tall pots and precisely directing water flow, it folds into a compact configuration when not in use. Originally only in chrome or vibrant stainless, the Karbon is now available in chrome with stainless joints and vibrant moderne brushed gold with vibrant moderne polished gold joints or vibrant brushed bronze joints.

Kitchen&Bath Culinary Revolution
Imagine bringing a spaghetti pot filled with water to a boil in three minutes. That’s the power of induction, an electromagnetic technology that is faster, more efficient and more responsive than any other cooking method. “Induction cooktops combine the benefit of gas and electric technology in a single unit,” explains Derek Faraci, Director of Sales at Midland Appliances. Instantaneous temperature changes mean superior results in food preparation. Thermador now offers PowerBoost™ to bring food to its highest temperature in the shortest time. At the other end of the spectrum, 10 micro-power increments enable the most precise simmering possible. “Every cooktop will get hot,” notes Faraci. “It’s the simmer that makes the difference in the quality of the food.” And since induction only heats the cookware, no radiant heat is wasted, no matter how small the pan. This also makes cleanup a breeze, as spills will never bake or crust on the cooktop. “It will change the way you cook forever,” says Faraci. He points out that at 13 inches, Thermador offers the largest induction element on the market, as well as an attractive silver mirrored finish option. These and many other induction cooktops are on live display at Midland Appliances.
Greenwich Time
Featuring a Greenwich door style from Craftpoint Cabinetry’s Architect Series, sleek profiles and built-in appliances give this kitchen a crisp contemporary look. “It’s a very popular style,” says Design and Sales Consultant Janice Galbichka. Craftpoint prides itself in the ability to build fabulous kitchens to fit every budget. The company offers a Designer Series with all the popular looks at very affordable prices, as well as the Architect Series which takes the design a step further. All cabinets can be custom-tailored according to individual needs. “Our main goal is to really listen to what the customer has to say,” says Galbichka. “We take their ideas and make them work.” In this kitchen, the homeowners wanted plenty of open shelving and cabinets that extend right to the ceiling. The granite countertop contrasts perfectly with the smoke stain of the maple cabinetry. Craftpoint offers a wide variety of countertop options, from man-made laminates to solid surface to quartz, granite and eco-friendly recycled glass. Behind the scenes, all drawers and rollouts feature Blumotion’s full extension soft close technology. “And there are many accessories you can add that you don’t see until you open the door,” notes Galbichka. From built-in double waste systems, pantry units and spice racks, the possibilities are endless. 135

Kitchen&Bath A Range of Possibilities
Imagine cooking a perfect turkey with barely more than a touch. Then, while the potatoes and buns stay warm, finish the gravy and let it sit on the stove without fear of burning. It’s all possible thanks to the Electrolux electric wavetouch slide-in range. With an “invisible” control panel on top of the glass cook-top, the built-in unit has a sleek clean look. “The wave-touch controls stay black until you touch them,” says Curtis Penner of Coast Wholesale Appliances. Then the magic begins, with options that include defrost, slow cook, convection, dehydrate, bread proofing and perfect turkey paired with a meat probe - all preset to turn on with a single touch. “And when that turkey is ready, you can pull it out of the oven with one finger,” says Penner, referring to the luxury glide oven racks with their ball-bearing system. He adds that the storage drawer doubles as a warm and bake oven for a two-in-one option. Meanwhile, the cooktop is just as flexible. There are five elements in total, three expandable to the size of the cookware. All elements have a low setting, which allows for simmering gravy and sauces at the perfect temperature. And at a more attractive price point than a separate cooktop and wall-oven, taking the guesswork out of cooking has never been more affordable.
Euroline
Square meets curved in this profiled door style from the newest addition to the Kitchen Craft family. Available in maple or cherry, the Napoli is one of five door styles in the exciting Euro Collection. “We now have the European styled line of cabinets to satisfy even the most contemporary design needs,” says Gordon Guenther of Kitchen Craft. Encompassing white oak and bamboo, as well as white, red and black high gloss cabinets and a stainless steel looking thermofoil, the collection is perfect for lofts and homes aiming for that distinctive contemporary flair. Kitchen Craft has also added a new array of contemporary handles to complement the cabinet. Always expanding its wide selection, the company manufactures over 100 different door style and wood species combinations, and offers more than 100 stains and colours. There is literally something for everyone. Furthermore, Kitchen Craft’s Aurora, Integra, and Euro lines are all made right here in Manitoba. Homeowners need go no further than their own province for the best that cabinetry has to offer. Adds Guenther: “Come down to our showroom on Regent Ave West to see our new Euro Display. Our experienced sales people and designers can help you realize the kitchen of your dreams.” 136 | STYLE MANITOBA | spring 2010
