A testament to that superior craftsmanship is clearly evidenced in our fabulous home story this issue – The Sum of its Parts. Featuring timber frame construction at its finest, this 10,000 square foot home exudes warmth and comfort in every nook and cranny. It not only exemplifies building excellence, but is also a well-deserved nod to the many local suppliers who participated in the “sum of its parts.” Also on the calendar this season is another mustattend event - the perennially popular Home Expressions Home & Garden Show, which runs from April 4–6 at the RBC Convention Centre. Here, consumers will find inspiration for a multitude of projects, along with a vast array of product displays. Show booths will offer everything from windows, doors and sunrooms, to fireplaces, stone products, landscape displays and so much more. On a final note for the winter weary among you don’t despair. While it’s hard to imagine working on the garden just yet, remember that old adage about March – it comes in like a lion, but goes out like a lamb.

uilding a 10,000-square-foot timber frame home is obviously no small feat. It takes serious teamwork between client, builder, designer, trades and suppliers to bring all the elements together into a cohesive, beautiful whole.

Flawless blend of old and new characterizes incredible timber frame home

These homeowners had worked with Pine Creek Homes before, and knew they could rely on builders Lori and Jasper Veenstra to turn their vision into a reality on their well-treed river lot. “The first consideration for any new home is function,” Lori says, noting that the home, while traditional in appearance, is also the epitome of innovation. “It truly is a blend of old and new. We used reclaimed, century-old timber and natural stone, along with the latest construction and automation technologies.” An emphasis on clean lines, paired with the rustic, warm qualities of wood and diverse materials like glass and metals provide a multidimensional, textured effect in keeping with the simplicity and coziness the client desired. Key to unifying the somewhat contrasting elements is deliberately planned symmetry. A central living area, consisting of kitchen, dining room, living room, library, sunroom and main entrance is flanked on either side by bedroom wings. “This provides an elegant way to distribute the various uses of the home and separate the sleeping functions from the active living space,” says Olenka of Olendia Design Ltd, the design consultant on the project.

Visitors enter through a dramatic glass vestibule with slate floors before being warmly embraced by the expansive main floor space. Soaring fir timber supports and beams are balanced by curtain walls of glass that run the length of each side to maximize the outside views.

Clad entirely in rough natural stonework, the towering, double-sided fireplace is scaled to suit the large space while acting as a division between living and dining areas. The entire area is grounded by hand-hewn hickory wood flooring from Curtis Carpets.

Thoughtful amenities, quality materials and expressive design define custom built home

With 6,000 square feet of total living space, scale was key to this home’s successful interior. Arnold Tiessen of Interior Illusions achieved that balance by choosing a large leather sectional and accent chairs for the great room.

An extensive curtain wall with transom windows brings the outdoors into the main living areas.

An open butler’s pantry provides a convenient preparation area and pass through from dining room to kitchen. Here, the soaring natural rooflines in the adjacent room transition to a standard ceiling height accented by dark stained and textured wood beams. Gleaming limestone flooring, along with stainless steel

appliances and custom cabinetry, further define the kitchen. In addition to building and installing the cabinetry, Heirloom Cabinetry artfully integrated the look of timber into the range hood canopy, crown mouldings and built-ins.

As a central hub for meal preparation and visiting, the unusual double island layout allows for easy maneuvering. “The kitchen was designed to accommodate several functions and a number of people at the same time,” Olenka explains. Attractive SPRING 2014 | STYLE MANITOBA | 7

Featuring cabinetry from Heirloom Cabinetry and granite countertops from Western Marble & Tile, the kitchen offers a sleek, yet natural look in keeping with the decor. swirled granite by Western Marble & Tile was used on all the kitchen counters and islands for a sleek, yet natural look in keeping with the overall dĂŠcor. A marvel of conveniences, most of the kitchen storage was confined to spaces below counter height. Heirloom Cabinetry installed soft-close European full extension drawer systems with inserts that keep everything in its place, as well as various organized pullouts for spices, bottles, recycling and more. A walk-in pantry maximizes the storage capacity, too. Additional details, such as wire and textured glass door inserts, hand-forged metal light fixtures, metal-tiled backsplash and patterned cabinet hardware provide the finishing touches. Adjacent to the kitchen, a large lounge area with its gas fireplace and travertine tile facade is the perfect place to relax and unwind before and after dinner. Artisan stone flooring imported from Italy lends a touch of Old World charm to the four-season verandah, which boasts unspoiled views of the river property from windows or by accessing the large outdoor deck. Glorious views can also be enjoyed from the vantage of the deck off of the bedroom on the master wing. Here, glass railings from Prairie Accent were used, offering an unimpeded view of the outdoor vista. The ultimate

Details abound in the kitchen, including a range hood canopy built to replicate the timbers. A metal tile backsplash expertly installed by Masterpiece Tileworks, wire mesh cabinet inserts and hammered metal drawer pulls provide elegant finishing touches.

Lighting, for example, merited strong consideration. “When you have a cavernous space and vaulted ceilings, lighting has to illuminate and at the same time, be proportionate to the room,” Olenka says. Advance Electronics installed a Lutron Homeworks lighting system to provide dependable and energy efficient lighting automation. It provides a cleaner look by replacing multi-gang switch locations with a single back lit and labeled keypad. Maintaining optimal comfort levels throughout a home this size requires a fully integrated mechanical system. “There’s eight different zones for heating and cooling within the home and garage,” Lori says. “We’ve installed multiple boilers and furnaces, as well as radiant flooring in some places, to ensure all areas are well heated, cooled and ventilated.” The furnace and air conditioning systems are housed out of sight in two basement mechanical rooms. absorption. The depth of the windowsills showcases the wall thickness.

This Pine Creek home is solid from the ground up. LOGIX ICFs (Insulated Concrete Forms) supplied by AMC Foam Technologies were used for both the basement and main floor wall, enveloping the timber frame structure. The balance of framing materials, provided by Springhill Lumber, complete the structural component of the home. “The use of ICF construction on the main floor as well as the basement is something you rarely see,” Lori notes.

The home is enveloped in an exterior of natural stone, as well as attractive shakes and siding from Red River Siding. Temple Metal Roofs installed metal shake roofing with exposed granular coating as well as copper-coloured standing seam metal roofing to provide durability, enhance the architecture and anchor the home into its natural setting. The home ultimately represents a wonderful expression of teamwork – with everyone bringing the entire concept together under a very large and handsome roof.

“It gives the feeling as if you’re in an old stone farmhouse, only without the drafts,” Lori says.

After a two-and-a-half year journey from design through to highly anticipated finished product, the home is what Olenka describes as “a sanctuary of beauty.” “Pine Creek Homes have set high standards for everyone they work with, and their handson, personal approach makes it an enjoyable process,” she adds. Lori agrees. “It’s a pleasure working with experienced people like Olenka, Larry from Heirloom Cabinets and Bruno at Advance Electronics, along with our many other longstanding suppliers and trades,” she says. “We also like to have fun. It helps our clients enjoy a stress-free building experience.”

Driving the Future When you get behind the wheel of a MercedesBenz ‘S’ Class, the car knows almost as much about you and your driving habits as you might know about the car itself. Sound like Science Fiction? Not at Mercedes-Benz Winnipeg, where innovative technology is helping to avoid accidents, reduce incidents of driver fatigue, and make the overall driving experience like no other in the luxury vehicle market. “Mercedes-Benz is all about taking the driving experience to a new level,” says Brian Lowes, President, Mercedes-Benz Winnipeg. Here he mentions materials like exotic woods in the cabin and a scent diffuser that subtly fragrances the purified interior airflow. There is even a comfort feature that imitates a hot stone massage. “These are also the safest cars ever made, thanks to Mercedes’ leading edge engineering that actually learns how you drive and helps to control the vehicle in scenarios such as lane drift or even parking.” This safety technology is called Intelligent Drive, and Mercedes-Benz cars come with a dizzying array of options that anticipate situations such as a collision. “Safety is enhanced for both the passengers of the Mercedes as well as the occupants of other vehicles,” comments Dean Peterson, Service Manager, Mercedes-Benz Winnipeg. As a good example he mentions the headlamps. “Adaptive Highbeam Assist ‘sees,’ and then doesn’t

By Kelly Gray | Photography: Mike Sanders

blind, oncoming traffic,” he says, noting that Mercedes has moved away from using bulbs to LED technology that is more energy efficient and targeted. Mark Kelly is General Sales Manager at Mercedes-Benz Winnipeg. Kelly states that the innovations found in their showroom are so important that virtually all major automobile manufacturers are in the midst of creating imitations. He notes that at Mercedes-Benz, they tend to introduce advances in the upper tier range such as the ‘S’ and ‘E’ classes first before bringing them into the mid and lower tier product groups. “This takes about two years for innovations to appear broadly across our line. Within the industry, our advances take about five years before they show up in other manufacturer’s products,” he says, suggesting that Anti-lock brakes and standard equipment air bags are a good case in point. Now Mercedes appears to have really taken off the gloves with a list of options that take driving to a level once only reserved for fantasy. Cars now come with industry leading radar and sonar systems and stereoscopic imaging to help prevent collisions at intersections in traffic. For example, Distronic Plus with Steer Assist allows radar sensors and the innovative stereo camera to help keep the vehicle centred in its lane, and at an appropriate distance from the vehicle ahead. According to Kelly, this greatly

reduces the stress of stop-and-go driving. With Passive Lane Keeping Assist, pulsed steering wheel vibrations tell the driver that the car’s radar and stereo cameras that monitor lane markings, have registered an unintended departure from the lane. If the system is Active Assist, it can apply course-correcting braking to keep the car in a safe road position. Mercedes’ innovative Collision Prevention Assist reduces the risk of collisions with the vehicle ahead by utilizing a radar-based distance warning system. If the system determines braking distance is insufficient, the car’s Adaptive Brake Assist kicks in to build up additional brake pressure to enhance the driver’s emergency braking. Once the sun goes down, Mercedes-Benz offers Night View Assist to alert drivers to the danger of pedestrians or animals ahead. Here, infrared and thermal imaging cameras distinguish between inconsequential objects and potential hazards by automatically switching the instrument cluster to a night view image that highlights the hazard. Should a collision occur, the car readies itself for impact by enhancing safety features such as shoulder harnesses that inflate to reduce impact trauma to passengers. “Safety is only one part of a very complete package that includes entertainment and comfort features of which other car companies only dream,” says Kelly, inviting those interested in driving the future today to drop by their showroom at Portage at Moray.

Owning a luxury vehicle has never been easier. From Audis to Lincolns, Nott Auto Corp can make it happen, thanks to the company’s newly minted division: Luxury Leasing Canada Ltd. According to Nott Auto Corp President, Trevor Nott, they listened to customers who were asking for not just the very best in pre-owned luxury cars, but were looking to obtain brand new models as well. Towards this end, Nott made arrangements to obtain wholesale fleet pricing from the full manufacturer slate of new vehicles. “Our business mission and foundation has always been a custom tailored selection process for our clients. Now we have simply enhanced and unified the entire process to include the financial components that best benefit each individual,” says Trevor. “Now we can pass on the Nott advantage to those who want more flexible lease options on a wide assortment of products, from commercial vehicles to cars, trucks and SUVs,” he says, commenting that customers can look at both new and pre-owned vehicles. What Trevor and his staff were hearing from clients was that they were dissatisfied with long-term leases. “Five year leases often have people wanting to get out early, but the standard leasing contract

leaves little room to move. We have changed all that with Luxury Leasing Canada where we control the financing, offer flexible terms and provide the option to return vehicles at lease end or to take advantage of tax benefits and low buy-out options.” This is in addition to well-known Nott programs, such as custom ordering of preowned vehicles that take all the risk and guesswork out of the process. “We take out the exposure to risk and leave customers with greater equity in their luxury car purchase. This means people get the cars they want in a hassle-free buying experience, and then a couple of years down the road, they find they have actual value in their cars rather than a lot of depreciation,” explains Trevor. Local family-owned Nott’s custom approach to each customer is what has made the company tops in its class. In fact, Consumer Top Choice Awards, an organization that polls a quarter of a million Canadians on products and services that exhibit quality, professionalism and value, voted Nott Auto Winnipeg’s best Luxury Car Dealer for 2013. “When our clients walk in our showroom, we want them to truly feel and know this is a place with real people that deal with empathy, compassion and a true sense of community. It’s how we have been able to grow our business to where it is today,” says Trevor.

He points to their unique inventory where car lovers can find models that truly excite. Indeed, where else in Winnipeg can you find a car company with Ferraris and Aston Martins alongside Lexus, Range Rovers and Hondas? “And we offer the full service experience and skill to keep your domestic or foreign luxury vehicle in top shape,” adds Trevor. When it comes to service, no one knows luxury vehicles like Nott. The Winnipeg-based service centre at Lagimodiere and De Vries features eight service bays and a highly trained crew to stand behind each work order. Just recently, Nott announced the addition of Gerald Boulet as Service Manager. He comes to Nott with 25 years of industry experience of which the last 15 he spent as an import specialist. “We have made a name by helping people buy smart and then protect their investment with great service that places the customer first. With Luxury Leasing Canada, our customeroriented objectives are the same as always, except instead of a purchase, our clients get the benefit of a short-term lease. In both purchase and leasing, we work to make sure customers are driving the car they want at terms that work for them,” he says, concluding that a successful car dealership is measured by their base of happy returning customers, and not just the bottom line.

Delectable Dining Photography: John Johnston

Food with a view Nothing can prepare you for Prairie 360: a revolving downtown restaurant scraping the city skyline at the 31st floor. The same ghost in the machine that animates Hermanos Restaurant & Wine Bar, Carnaval Brazilian BBQ, and Corrientes Argentine Pizzeria, is taking us on another gourmet spin. And this time around the roots aren’t in South America, they’re firmly planted in Manitoba. The view ... you won’t believe your eyes: a jaw-dropping panorama featuring every compass point downtown has to offer of the city and beyond. Admittedly, the vista makes it hard to focus on eat and drink. But we turn back to our taste buds thanks to a signature “Prairie Pilsner” local brew, as well as a neat fruity Aberfeldy 12 year old Highland from 360‘s exhaustive whiskey menu. The food ... spins on quintessential Manitoba cuisine. How’s this for Manitoban? Smoked fish board appetizer of Manitoba pike caviar, cream cheese, and pickled vegetables. How about perogies? Bingo! Perogies were NEVER such a guilty pleasure! The classic bundles get plumped up with velvety minced bison and prosciutto filling. Rich and earthy! Smoothing it all out is a cool garlic cream sauce, pearly house brined peppers, and a bright side of green onion sour cream; this full plate fills! Attention hunters; poike! A rustic stew served in a sturdy small cast iron pot, we get hearty spoonings of Manitoba lamb, elk, bison and deer doused in red wine. Chickpeas, beans, carrots, celery, onions, and fried potato are tossed in for good measure. Another attraction: Steaks! Prairie 360’s varieties of premium-aged beef are sure to satisfy. Of course, a comprehensive wine list will make for perfect pairing; but for something fun, from a selection of homemade sodas comes the “Grow a Pear” gingery bubble of pear, five spice, and lemon. Semifreddo for dessert is a cool and refreshing joy. Smooth Ricotta cheese mingles with roasted pistachio, berries, and white chocolate. What’s a “360” without a flip? For the big finale, a fittingly robust speciality coffee: Jagerflip. Foaming up herby Jagermiester with coffee syrup, almond milk, and a whole egg, this burly layered tonic is the perfect hair of the dog for such a robust Manitoban meal.

Hair Aesthetics Massage New restaurant makes a big hit One of the most famous snapshots of all time was taken by an astronaut in 1972: “The Blue Marble.” The photo radically altered our image of the Earth - capturing it in luminous blue, like a glass marble. Now, the Blue Marble Restaurant & Lounge has just rolled into The Grand Winnipeg Airport Hotel by Lakeview; and, honestly, we’ve never “Oohed!” and “Aahed!” so many times over one meal. What’s with Blue Marble’s wow-factor? Blue Marble is “green” -- and has the Urban Cultivator to prove it! That’s right; micro greens, garnish, and herbs are all grown on site, complementing every plate with from-scratch goodness.

1-1800 Corydon Ave 204.478.7878 or 204.942.3351

lookshairandbody.com

The restaurant is “green” too, when it comes to an unwavering commitment to local sourcing and organics. In fact, if management can orchestrate the water system, the restaurant will boast rooftop gardens for fresh produce come summertime. Executive Chef Anthony Kucera, whose experience includes notable kitchens like Pine Ridge Hollow, Gluttons, and Toronto’s Summerhill Market, has indeed pulled out all the stops when it comes to Blue Marble’s energizing breakfast, lunch, dinner and lounge offerings. But it’s during that magic time – dinner hour – that Blue Marble REALLY shines. Sipping the likes of a cool and fiery “Camomille Negroni” martini or an oaky Okanagan Valley Red Rooster Cabernet Merlot from a drink list that emphasizes bartending craft and Canadian content, diners will be tempted by a line-up of tasty plates portioned and priced for tapas-style munching. (And wine is now on cask at this locale!) Starting light and tangy, the beet salad harmonizes roasted yellow and red beets, shaved fennel, crisp arugula, splashy orange, and dots of goat cheese - all with a beguiling anise vinaigrette. Perfection! Want surprise in every bite? Cinnamon-infused stewed chicken on supple basmati is stuffed with plump fruit, whole nuts, and juicy chicken morsels. Exotic, sweet, and addictive! The Lamb Duo lets you have it both ways -- braised and racked. Braised shank is melt-in-your-mouth rubbed in espresso, piled on potato puree, and drenched in sweet vanilla gravy. Meanwhile, superbly seared rack pieces are coco accented and dipped in cool mint yogurt. And perched atop discrete pillows of potato are plump boneless grilled quail. Glazed with cardamom and tamarind, surrounded by leafy Brussels sprouts, almond, and smokey pancetta (Italian bacon), this plate is all savoury, fresh, and rustic. Desserts simply wow; after all, exciting ingredients include ricotta, olive oil, and orange confit. The delicacies of Saskatoon dust and marinated blackberry lure us to Saskatoon Mousse. Charmingly fashioned like an ornate hatbox, this purply mousse striped with mellow almond cake is the prettiest dessert we’ve ever seen: topped with glassy beads of honey gelee and real chew-friendly honeycomb. You also get to dip the mellow berry mousse into dense dark chocolate ganache or crème fraîche pelleted with bee pollen. Heaven! Pondering plain ole pints and sport? Cheer your favourite teams in style, thanks to comfy swanky booths, multiple big screen HDTVs, and a comprehensive list of local brews.

Rollin’ on a river

Top 10 reasons to river cruise

River cruising is one of the hottest new trends in travel. Much like its big sister, the ocean cruise, river cruises allow vacationers to experience different parts of the world while only having to unpack once, but it’s all done in a more private, intimate setting.

1 An intimate experience. On average, river cruise ships have

150 passengers, creating a more unique, personalized cruise.

2 Five star service. With this small size, crew members know your

name (and drink order!), so service is beyond compare.

3 No hidden costs. River cruises are all-inclusive, including meals

9 Nothing will hold you back. A riverboat’s flat bottom provides a smooth ride, reducing the risk of motion sickness.

10 Something for everyone. With destinations around the world and various itineraries, there’s a river cruise for everyone,

Hooked on the idea of river cruising now? Join CAA Travel on an unforgettable journey: the life-changing 70th Anniversary D-Day cruises down the Seine in June or in October, the President’s Cruise floats along the enchanting Rhine (see ad on page X). and wine, beer and soda during lunch and dinner.

4 That’s not all – shore excursions are also included. Take a

guided tour through magnificent cities or taste wine at a local vineyard. There’s always a lot to do and see.

5 Speaking of seeing – all cabins have a gorgeous view. There

are no inside staterooms here. Whether its floor-to-ceiling windows or balconies, each cabin on-board looks out to the amazing sights around you.

6 Sail into the heart of each destination. River cruises can sail

directly into destinations that are unreachable by ocean liners. From the legendary canals of Amsterdam to the snow-capped vistas of Switzerland, you’ll see it all up close.

7 Truly experience your destination. With tours by local guides,

you’ll experience each stop in an authentic and enriching way.

8 Travel like a local. Most river cruises offer a fleet of bicycles to

use while in port.

PRAGUE: A baroque play on a gothic stage Photos & story by Greg Klassen

Until the 16th century, the way to identify a house in Prague was not by a number but by a graphic symbol above its front door. Every building had one. There was the house of the blue horse, the house of the pink swan, three guitars, three octopus and so on.

They are an excellent reason to keep your eyes lifted up while walking through the city’s historically rich and vibrant centre. The architecture is a breathtaking mix of many periods, including Gothic, Baroque, Renaissance, Art Nouveau and contemporary.

You can still find these symbols adorning many of the centuries-old buildings of the Czech capital.

The city’s stunning edifices tell the story of Prague’s historical evolution. We learn as we tour the first full day in Prague that the city is literally a palimpsest, or “scraped clean and used again,” a layering of different eras. From the rather spartan and utilitarian buildings to structures from the Communist era to relatively new buildings like Frank Gehry’s Fred and Ginger or the Dancing House, the city is an architectural study. The old centre is compressed and intimate for a European city, the ideal turf for any fledgling traveller. The cobblestone streets beg to be explored on foot, offering surprises around every corner including many medieval alleys where the sounds of the city literally melt away. The highlight of any walk around Prague is a sultry stroll across the historic and beautiful Charles

40 | STYLE MANITOBA | SPRING 2014

Bridge, often called the most beautiful in the world. Decreed by Charles the 4th and made of stone, the bridge looks like it will last forever. In order to get the most out of our time in Prague, we hired the tour company Insight Prague to help our first steps in this incredible city be more informed ones. Their guides are professors, historians, journalists, art critics and writers who offer an intimate glimpse at Prague’s 1,000 years at the centre of Europe’s cultural and political history. As we gaze at the blackened statues along the pedestrian-only Charles Bridge, our guide Vadim declares, “Prague is a baroque play on a gothic stage.” He’s right. The sturdy stone bridge is the ideal foil for the excesses of the many statues that cover it. He also reveals how Gothic and Baroque architecture co-exist and almost seem to do battle along the streets of Prague. While they fight for our eye’s attention, they also work together. Gothic is about “height and light” and

a passport search or identity check. In the past decade or so, the city has literally exploded with art and culture, while many buildings have been renovated, both outside and in. At some point, all visitors will end up at Prague’s Old Town Square. The old clock, the floodlit spires of the Tym Church and the Baroque facades surround an incredible art nouveau statue of Jan Hus, the first priest to challenge the Catholic Church and someone whose teachings Martin Luther followed. Tourists flock to the square’s medieval astronomical clock on the hour, when the 12 apostles glide by and four symbols of evil dance and shimmy below.

these structures are calming, despite their darker undertones, whereas Baroque architecture features glitter and undulation and movement which never allows the eye to rest. Our guide was born in Russia and raised in California. Vadim Erent has spent the last decade living in the Czech capital along with his young family. He is visibly in love with his adopted city and walks it frequently and purposefully, gathering a wealth of information to shares with the visitors he encounters. As we walk through the theatre and arts district, he tells us that Czech people attend plays in the same way that Americans watch TV. “The Czech love of theatre is a hangover from the era of socialism,” he says. Prague’s Velvet Revolution took place in 1989. The Czech Republic overthrew 42 years of Communist rule and never looked back. Erent hypothesized that the Czech people fought their occupation, but also gave into it with a resignation that is uniquely Czech. He believes it’s the main reason that so many of the city’s historic structures survived intact. The country has been open to the West for the last three decades. Now, when you arrive at Prague’s Vaclev Havel airport, there’s not even

Then there’s Prague’s food scene. If you are worried that the city’s cuisine will be all goulash and dumplings, think again. La Degustation, a relatively new, high-end addition to Prague’s dining scene, is about a five-minute walk from the old square. With its open kitchen, you can watch your seven or 11-course meal being prepared. As each course is served, a sommelier brings you a glass of wine and explains why the pairing works. The culinary adventurous will love the Asian fusion restaurant Sansho. Located about a 10-minute walk from the city’s centre, it’s also a fixed menu. Ours included salmon sashimi in citrus, soft crab on sliders, rare beef salad and curried beef with greens. Aromi, an Italian restaurant in the Vinohrady district, specializes in fish and has a very warm, relaxed atmosphere. Prague cafes, the Savoy, Louvre, Imperial, and the touristy, but so chic Grand Orient, all have beautiful style. Many of them had their tiled ceilings and fixtures covered during the Communist takeover, preserving them gloriously. The Grand Orient, located on the second floor of the House of the Black Madonna, is a walk back in time. The cubist architecture is glorious and the food tastes homemade. Ask for a drop of brandy in your hot chocolate after a long day of walking. On our fourth full day in Prague, we go on another Insight Prague tour, this time of the old city’s art nouveau architecture. American-born guide George Thompson makes for an insightful and enthusiastic guide.

We discover that art nouveau was only in vogue for approximately 10 years and that it reached its zenith in the early part of the 20th century. The distinctive style is distinguished by its integration of nature into everything. Thompson tells us that he believes that the inhabitants of Prague have always been suspicious of anyone telling them how to live. He says the way many of the buildings need to be studied from all angles proves his theory. Even natives can’t always identify buildings just viewing them from the front. He believes this is why the city held a special fascination for many creative thinkers and artists, including Kafka, Mozart and Mucha, who either were born in Prague or migrated there. Prague will delight even the most jaded traveller. Its non-linear street patterns lend themselves to a delightful confusion as the wanderer eventually accepts that there are worse places to be lost. When you’re in Prague, you simply surrender to the beauty of looking up and spend your time imagining who walked these streets before you. Or wonder what house symbol might have belonged to you.

When your pet needs a doctor, they deserve the best and most compassionate care. This is the view of Dr. Sra and his colleagues at Southglen Veterinary Hospital, a state-ofthe-art facility located in the south-end of Winnipeg on St. Anne’s Road. “When we opened in 2008, we were one of very few clinics to open seven days a week. In 2010, we expanded this service to offer longer opening hours till midnight. We know that pet owners need flexible options so we offered more convenient hours without extra charge,” says Dr. Sra, commenting that people can come in on weekends or late night for any medical needs their pets might have, but also for things like routine vaccinations, to purchase pet food and pick up prescriptions. The centre is a fully equipped veterinary hospital and offers an in-house state-of-the-art lab where blood and urine can be analyzed and the results can be available in about half an hour. “We also offer digital X-ray, ultrasound and a full range of surgical options. We are fully staffed with four fulltime veterinarians and eight registered animal health technicians, five vet assistants and five receptionists to help provide the best possible care for your pets. We do a lot of soft tissue and orthopaedic procedures, such as Tibial Tuberosity Advancement (TTA) surgery to repair the knees of dogs that have ruptured or damaged their cranial cruciate ligament. At Southglen Veterinary Hospital, we offer a full surgical suite to handle just about anything to do with dogs, cats and small mammals, such as rabbits and ferrets.” The facility is also the place to bring your pet for less complex services, such as yearly wellness exams and vaccinations. Southglen also offers pet dentistry, geriatric pet care and pain management. “Our animal hospital includes a wide range of wellness services for your pet, including annual exams, microchipping, spay/neuter, dental cleaning and nutritional counselling,” notes Dr. Sra.

Pet Popular By Kelly Gray

“Its important to understand how stressful life can be when a pet is not well. For this reason, we take the time to discuss the circumstances of the illness and the various treatment options available. Our focus is on the client and pet. This is why we have extended hours and have created one of the most complete facilities in the city where we can deal with anything from tooth decay to complex life saving surgeries,” he says, noting that compassion is always on the table.

Dr. Sra and Southglen Veterinary Hospital are working closely with Manitoba Mutts rescue to help northern communities by holding spay and neuter clinics as part of the “Get fixed Manitoba” initiative. According to Dr. Sra, one of the major issues they are seeing in the pet population is obesity. Everybody at the clinic is able to advise clients on how best to help their pets with weight issues, and design a specific diet and feeding plan as needed. “We carry a wide range of prescription pet foods from Royal Canin, Hills and Purina. Our staff is trained in various aspects of pet nutrition and are here to help clients choose the best options for their pets. Lots of health issues in pets can be managed or even treated just by choosing the right diet,” he says. “Our staff, who are a combination of recent college grads and pet healthcare veterans, are all very knowledgeable, and our clients tell us they are very caring as well. We understand that for our clients, their pets are beloved family members and we make sure that they are provided with the best possible care.” Southglen Veterinary Hospital is located at 730 St. Anne’s Road. The Once and Future World

(Random House Canada) by J. B. MacKinnon Revisit a world teeming with life with this beautifully written exploration of the transformations wrought on nature by people. As we consider the extinction of innumerable species, the author writes of nature as it was, as it is, and as it could one day be: the interconnectedness of things, the rewilding movement, and how ordinary people in the past had a knowledge of nature possessed nowadays only by scientists. In an age of unimaginable loss, here’s a hopeful plea for more natural abundance and a richer world.

STEREO Reviewed by Randal McIlroy Ryuchi Sakamoto Playing the Piano/Out of Noise (Decca/Universal) Ryuchi Sakamoto made his first impression in the West as a circuitry man, with Yellow Magic Orchestra building on the Kraftwerk template of synthesizer pop, but he started in the conservatory as a pianist. His first love has been honoured before, from the exquisite BTTB (Back to the Basics) to the piano score for his music for Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence. That wistful title melody returns on the piano half of this double set, along with translucent charm in the style of his beloved Debussy, but the surprise is “Thousand Knives,” once a scything and chattering electronic melody by YMO, here defanged but no less dexterous. Out of Noise is the misleading title for the thoughtful creations of the second disc, where the experiments range from “Hibari,” where the piano theme laps in and out of itself, to ice sounds Sakamoto recorded during a research tour of an Arctic glacier.

At 72, England’s folk iconoclast remains undimmed and undaunted, with a new masterpiece in the 15 minutes of “Heaven is Here.” Set on the myth of Orpheus and Eurydice, laced by Fiona Brice’s sinuous, understated string arrangement and Harper’s intricate guitar line, it’s his warmest epic in years, and beautifully sung. He hasn’t lost his anger, either; “Cloud Cuckooland,” a droll indictment of morally inert society, could even net the old soldier a hit single.

The Durutti Column LC (Factory Benelux import) To hear what made The Durutti Column so audaciously beautiful in 1981, and so magnetic today, play “Jacqueline” or “Experiment in Fifth” from the sumptuously appointed revival of LC. Vini Reilly plays his signature echoed electric guitar in economical instrumentals so warm and sure they require virtually no elaboration, and you wish they’d go on and on. Reilly’s second album, and first with astute drummer Bruce Mitchell, compels through a morning mist – “Dreams melt away/Like the first cigarette of the day,” he sings in his first vocal – but with a subtle, irresistible undertow. This issue is expanded with more than an hour of lost singles and rarities, and not a single superfluous note. SPRING 2014 | STYLE MANITOBA | 51

Growing investment For 25 years, Manitoba homeowners have relied on the experience of Veert Landscaping to achieve the yards of their dreams. Established neighbourhoods, newer residential developments and western Ontario’s cottage country have benefited from the company’s equipment knowledge

and proven track record. In fact, Veert Landscaping’s expertise can be seen in many of the distinctive showhome properties in this year’s Parade of Homes. If you are looking to do extensive landscape and excavation work on your property or would like to

make small-scale upgrades to an existing yard, Veert Landscaping is the one-stop shop for all of your landscaping needs. There are no limits to what the company can do, whether you want to landscape your home with trees, shrubs and sod, or if you are considering a patio, retaining wall, a new walk or driveway. “Our professional staff can do it all,” says President Paul Veert. The company has made major investments in an extensive line of equipment to handle large high-profile commercial jobs, such as building a football field for St. Paul’s High School, and constructing a 10-foot-high by 1,000-foot-long retaining wall dike out of Allan Block for flood proofing at St John’s Ravenscourt. Veert Landscaping has also provided landscaping and hardscaping for several city parks to accommodate skateboarding, as well as for walking and leisure.

52 | STYLE MANITOBA | SPRING 2014

Residential clients benefit from this specialized equipment because it helps projects go more efficiently. And they also benefit from the knowledge and discipline Veert Landscaping has earned over the years by working on commercial projects with architects and engineers. Now, with a brand new asphalt paving division, Veert Landscaping has expanded its repertoire to more fully service its residential clients. Customers now have the option of incorporating asphalt driveways and pathways into their landscaping plan, which means even more flexibility. Veert Landscaping offers free estimates and consultations, and a customized landscape design service. Landscape designers work with clients to develop a personalized plan, and then Veert Landscaping’s dynamic and experienced in-house staff take care of everything, from excavation

to finished product. Concrete, paving stone and asphalt work, as well as drainage solutions with excavation equipment can all be accommodated. Once a project is underway, staff are available to answer clients’ questions before, during and after the job is done. “In addition to having well-trained and knowledgeable staff, we have good relationships with our suppliers, and this transfers to our customers,” Veert says. This includes Barkman, a Winnipeg-based company that offers innovative products like outdoor fireplaces, firepits, bars, pub tables and pizza ovens, in addition to its extensive and popular line of patio stones. As an authorized Barkman installer, Veert Landscaping can integrate these products into any landscaping project to create the ultimate outdoor living space. “With our large buying power we can select trees and shrubs from various suppliers, and our large volume assures our clients of fresh stock,” Veert notes.

With a quarter century of unparalleled customer service and professional integrity, Veert Landscaping is renowned for its high quality work. The company is Better Business Bureau accredited with an A+ rating, and offers a one-year warranty on all landscape work. The company recently became COR certified, additional assurance that workplace health and safety standards are implemented and maintained. A well-designed and installed home landscape is aesthetically pleasing and functional, adding value to your home while you enjoy the surroundings. “We understand and respect the long-term investment our clients are making in their yards, for the same reason we invest in our equipment and our employees,” Veert says. Veert adds that with 65 employees and wide range of equipment, “all our clients can rest assured that if we come to work on your yard, the job will be done right.” For more information, visit Veert.com

outdoorli v ing Think big Having a small urban backyard doesn’t mean having to limit your imagination. This elaborate yet efficient outdoor space designed by 3 Seasons Landscaping proves how a well-conceived design can make the most out of what would otherwise be an ordinary space. A custom built stucco and metal fence surrounding the backyard of the Tuscanyinspired home matches the home in scale, design and colour to create and frame this true outdoor “room.” Rustic paving stones, tiered on two levels, anchor the multipurpose entertaining area. The paver pattern varies along the edges to provide visual interest, give the perimeter gardens more depth and create three distinct sitting areas: a formal dining space, a lounge area anchored by a custom-built fireplace, and an outdoor kitchen fitted with a wood-burning pizza oven and bar. Rising above it all is a custom pergola that defines the dining area, while maintaining a connection with the overall space. The pergola posts are clad in large pillar casings, making the structure appear more substantial while echoing the home’s overall aesthetic.

Shrubs and perennials co-exist with the sprawling patio, balancing the yard without sacrificing valuable entertainment space.

Well-executed yards to fit any budget can happen with a master plan at the design stage and by simply opening up to new possibilities.

Since the space is nestled into the surrounding unpredictable and organic shapes of boulders, plants and trees, and combines elements of

earth, water and fire, it is a natural and inviting space for the homeowners and their guests.

Simple statement A contemporary home, with its straight lines and multiple angles, need to be balanced by the surrounding property. Landscaping needs to be linked to the home’s design without detracting from the natural beauty that exists around it. This modern sanctuary, for example, takes the idea of casual firepit and turns it into a unique outdoor space with strong design. At the same time, it blends beautifully into its wetland backdrop. Designed and installed by Bedrock Custom Landscaping, this area maximizes the space available for socializing. According to Bedrock Landscaping owner Jason Woznesensky, the geometric style of home on the property influenced his design. “Sometimes keeping it simple can have a bigger impact,” he notes. Tyndall stone pillars support large fir timbers, which match the home’s architecture and serve as benches, flanking the rectangular-shaped firepit in the centre. Square charcoal slate slabs are imbedded in crushed black rushed granite. The effect is crisp and clean, on a scale perfectly suited to the area.

Your

Thoughts I can hardly wait to get the Spring 2014 issue of Style Manitoba! My husband and I are avid gardeners and love the landscape design coverage your magazine provides. We are working toward a new look for our property this year and are hoping to see more inspiring ideas in the upcoming edition. Over the years, we’ve noticed that the Outdoor Living section of Style Manitoba has evolved, and that most of the coverage occurs in the spring, summer and fall issues. That said, we are sincerely looking forward to getting our hands on the new one. Arianna Warner, Winnipeg My wife and I are thinking of adding a pool to our yard this summer, which will likely mean doing a redesign of the existing landscape. We felt inspired by the coverage in Style’s fall issue – especially the Ultimate Urban Oasis story. The pergola really caught my eye, as did the wall featuring EasyRock product. Talk about a dramatic focal point. Needless to say, the pool area looked outstanding. Just wanted to let you know how helpful it has been to have Style Manitoba as a reference tool. My husband and I really enjoy reading Style Manitoba, and the winter edition was no exception. We actually went to see Natalie MacMaster perform, and wouldn’t have known about it except for Style’s cover story on this amazing fiddler! Thanks for keeping us informed – we are looking forward to your next issue. Sandra Richards, Winnipeg I recently picked up a copy of Style Manitoba while at my doctor’s office waiting for an appointment. What an impressive publication! I could hardly believe the products and homes featured were actually here in Manitoba. Keep up the good work – Manitoba is a great place to live and your magazine captures that beautifully. outdoorli v ing California dreamin’ California comes to Winnipeg in this Napa Valley-inspired yard, designed and installed by Prelude Landscaping. Tired of their dated wood deck, the clients desired a maintenance-free, open, sunny space for entertaining and relaxing. Prelude Landscaping delivered with an 850-square-foot raised patio encompassing a dining area, barbeque, fireplace, hot tub and this large 600-square-foot seating area. White and cream travertine paver slabs from Barkman lend Mediterranean warmth to the space, while custom pillars of natural textured stone make distinctive style statements. The stone looks like limestone but has the integrity of granite and marble. Copper fire bowls, set on top of the pillars and filled with reflective glass beads, add a unique ambiance in the evening hours. Prelude Landscaping owner Pedro Gomes recommends incorporating elements like fire and water to add further dimension to a yard. Professionally installed water features like ponds and waterfalls, for example, provide relaxing background sounds to make for a true outdoor oasis. To connect the patio visually to the rest of the yard, Prelude Landscaping also installed a large side rock garden using the same colour palette. Because Prelude Landscaping is a one-stop shop for all landscaping needs, the clients were able to enjoy the benefits of working with one experienced and dedicated team to create this beautiful outdoor extension of their home.

Hot Days, Warm Nights When the summer sun goes down, you don’t have to go inside. The added warmth and ambience of a wood burning fireplace, or sleek natural gas option, can extend your outdoor enjoyment well into the evening. Bola by Marquis, a made-in-Manitoba product, is the perfect way to enhance the enjoyment of any outdoor space. Ideally suited for use on a wood deck or patio, the Bola, featured here, comes complete with choice of lava rocks, decorative ember glass in four colours, or decorative stones in shades of gray, and is fuelled by either natural gas or propane. The concrete fire bowl is available in textured black or smooth grey to match any exterior décor. The linear trend continues this season, even outside, with Napoleon’s transparent outdoor fireplace. While it can act as a deck partition, the bold flame can still be enjoyed from all angles and sides. Keeping with the modern, metal mode, Classic Fireplaces also offers sleek stainless steel fire tables, with a granite-like top, or bronzed

rubbed metal tables with slate top. Interior burning options include lava rocks, logs or glass.

Classic Fireplaces offers numerous other patio heaters, wood burning fire pits, barbecues, and water features in various styles and sizes at their showroom in St. Boniface.

The winter chill still is holding on, but that doesn’t mean you can’t turn up the heat. Hot tubs, swim spas, fitness equipment, swimming pools, and of course, fireplaces are all available at Krevco Lifestyles - your year round, gotta have store. “Actually, my favourite time of the year is when it’s cold and I can get in the hot tub, toque on and beverage in hand,” laughs Don Carson, president. At Krevco, winner seven years in a row for best hot tub retailer and swimming pool builder, customers can shop the largest hot tub selection in Manitoba from a variety of series such as Master Spa, Healthy Living, Clarity, Legend and Twilight. Krevco also carries Plug and Play portable hot tubs that can make the move from your cabin to home and back using a normal power source. Krevco Lifestyles is proud to provide Michael Phelps Signature Swim Spas that allow you to swim outdoors 12 months of the year. Keeping a hot body is certainly on a lot people’s minds as the weather gets a bit warmer. Krevco Lifestyles is the retailer for Flaman Fitness’ line of products. The Bowflex TreadClimber has been one of the hottest products this year. The treadclimber combines the forward belt of a treadmill, the step-up action of a stair climber, and a low-impact motion of an elliptical to create a workout that burns up to 3.5 times more calories than the same speed workout on a treadmill. Carson shares that they have just been flying out of the stores as fast as they can get them in. Yet, nothing has been hotter for Krevco than fireplaces. Since acquiring Embers Fireplaces several years ago, Krevco has integrated the brand into each store, ensuring they have the largest selection of gas burning, wood burning, electric, pellet and specialty fireplaces in Western Canada. Having It All By Carly Peters

J&D Penner now offers landscaping options to create your perfect backyard from start to finish. Laying down the actual cornerstones of a backyard project has been J&D Penner’s expertise for over 43 years. But this spring, the team that turns backyard hardscapes into dream spaces is adding landscape design and development to create a full package for customers. “We’ve brought in experts on landscape design and planting to create a one-stop shop,” states Jonathan Penner, manager of the J&D Penner recreation division, adding that includes elements such as sod, trees, and shrubs. “And of course, The Yard Décor Store also has a large and unique selection of planters, fountains, and birdbaths for those finishing touches.” Since Manitobans live in a cold weather climate, people want to spend as much time

outdoors in the summer as possible, and are turning their backyards into an extension of their homes. Penner says they are creating more outdoor kitchens, barbecues, fireplaces, bar tops, and even pizza ovens, which are all on display at their 2560 McGillivray Blvd. showroom. People are also looking to play in their yards, and what could be better than chipping away at your own putting green? Last year J&D Penner became the EasyTurf representative for Manitoba. EasyTurf is a great solution for all residential landscape applications - from small dog runs, to complete yard replacements, to professional artificial putting greens, bocce ball courts, and more. Best of all, EasyTurf requires little maintenance to keep it looking beautiful all summer long. “We did a nice putting green for a gentleman in Bridgwater Lakes who was a golf buff. And it really looks and plays like real golf course grass,” says Penner, who also urges people

to come see, touch, and even play on their showroom putting green. Keeping everything looking natural, even though it might be manmade, is a trend in this spring’s backyard steps. Barkman Concrete, a company J&D Penner has had a relationship with for over 40 years, offers large Rosetta slabs of natural looking stone, which seem to appear as if they’ve been carved out of the rocky landscape. Penner explains that it really gives an elevated yard a grand feel, and can create definition between two levels. “If you have a pool on the upper level it can help create an almost separate ‘room’ for a sitting area on the lower portion,” he explains. “It’s such a creative touch, and it’s really easy to work into the landscape.” Whether it’s rustic charm, modern sleek, or the marriage of both, J&D Penner can help you plan, design, and create your warm weather room’s hardscapes, greenery and accents from start to finish.

Reinventing your backyard Every summer weekend, many Winnipeggers find themselves rushing around, doing last-minute errands before packing up their vehicles and heading on the highways to cottage country. Once they arrive, unpack, deal with maintenance and upkeep of cabins and yards, it leaves little time to enjoy the surroundings before repeating the efforts to come home again. Factor in cost of gas, vehicle wear and tear, and other expenses, and the additional costs for these out-of-town adventures start to eat away at the budget. The process may qualify as simply par for the course for some, but for many others it cuts into their valuable relaxation time with family and friends. For this reason, an increasing number of savvy homeowners are trimming expenses while upsizing their down time by turning their backyards into urban retreats that can be enjoyed all week long.

By Leigh Patterson

A strong word-of-mouth reputation has clients relying on Samson Pools to make their dreams a reality. “We offer custom designed backyards that expand indoor entertaining experiences to the outdoors,” says Samson Pools co-owner Jonathan Kreviazuk. “Since we know that our summers are short and that clients want to enjoy their yards quickly, we can professionally design and install a fully landscaped yard including pool in as little as two weeks,” he says. Samson Pools offers complete, convenient, turnkey inground pool packages with everything included. This means that once installed, the pool is ready to use with nothing required on the part of the homeowner – just jump in and enjoy! Contrary to popular belief, there’s very little maintenance required. “I would say that if you

spend a half hour a week on maintaining the pool, that’s a lot,” Kreviazuk notes, adding that Samson Pools sells automatic pool cleaners as well as a single chemical package that lasts all year. “It takes a lot of the guesswork out of it.” Everything, from pools, to outdoor patios to landscaping, can be handled from start to finish by Samson Pool’s expert team. After all, Samson Pools strives to provide the most maintenance and worry-free backyard renovation experience possible to their clients. It’s a commitment that both Kreviazuk and co-owner Blair Irwin have held since day one. As owners, they not only sell their backyard solutions, but one of them will be onsite at each project to maintain high quality standards and ensure their clients are taken care of, personally, at every step. A Positive Move

April and Donald admit to being excited as they looked out the window of their descending West Jet flight and saw Bridgwater Forest below. The couple is visiting from Edmonton to look over new home communities. Donald has already been to the Bridgwater neighbourhoods for a quick look with their REALTOR® and has placed it high on their short list prospects. Now he has brought in April to help make the decision.

“We were pleasantly pleased with the selection of communities available in Winnipeg so close to my new job,” says Donald, who had toured several areas including more mature neighbourhoods such as Tuxedo and Crescentwood before placing Bridgwater on the list for a return visit with April. The positives that had Donald and April checking off boxes have made the neighbourhoods of Bridgwater the city’s fastest growing new home community for the past five years. Indeed, over 22 percent of the entire city’s new home building permits for 2013 were taken out for properties in Bridgwater from those looking for

“Our expectations for 2014 are for continuing success in the market with new home permits breaking the 300 barrier for the fourth year in a row,” says Dwayne Rewniak, Director of Land Development for Manitoba Housing, a provincial organization mandated with creating the Neighbourhoods of Bridgwater, a multi-phase development that includes Bridgwater Forest, Bridgwater Lakes, Bridgwater Centre and Bridgwater Trails. According to Rewniak, Bridgwater Forest is over 90 percent complete with all services installed and build out expected by 2016. Bridgwater Lakes is currently the most active neighbourhood and will consist of 1190 lots at completion, of which 50 percent will be ‘visitable’ (homes designed for ease of mobility). “Bridgwater Lakes has seen 850 lots sold to date, with around 400 homes occupied in the neighbourhood,” he says, noting that the current showhomes are located in this section at Lake Bend Road and Eagleview Road.

Innovative will be Bridgwater’s Town Centre, where retail, office and residential uses all intersect to create a heart for the residential neighbourhoods. According to Rewniak, the idea is to build community with different demographics living alongside meaningful services. Here he points to places such as Osborne Village as an example of how this works in more mature neighbourhoods. “It’s no secret that factors such as walkable neighbourhoods, mixed demographics and key services such as food stores and interesting boutiques all contribute to a greater sense of wellbeing and community. This is what the Bridgwater neighbourhoods are all about.” April and Donald could not agree more. And while they are not as close to river property as they are in Edmonton, the selection of residential designs as well as the bike path connectivity, the forested acres and the lakes are all big plusses that have them suggesting that yes, they will be making a move from the Alberta capital to the neighbourhoods of Bridgwater.

Bridgwater Trails will see its first new home built in 2014 in an area where the developer is bringing back lane access and smaller lot sizes to make entry pricing even more attractive. “This is our third residential neighbourhood and we will offer 282 single-family lots, as well as eight multi-family parcels in the first phase,” he says, adding that Bridgwater Trails will finish with 1040 single-family lots and over 1000 multi-family units.

The couple has three boys who are all under 10 years of age. Donald is a healthcare professional who has accepted a position with a facility in the south-end of the city. April is a homemaker with a background in marketing. They are interested in a comfortable well appointed home with a community similar to their Crestwood home in Edmonton. There, massive residences exist alongside more modest homes in a demographically inclusive mix that also offers pathways along the North Saskatchewan River, and a funky commercial hub where boutiques and wine bars work side by side with cool retail and service shops. Bridgwater easily fits the bill.

Through the Looking Glass Glass has always been stylish, but Maric Homes is finding new ways to incorporate it into the aesthetic design of 28 Waterstone Drive in Bridgwater Forest. The front and rear elevations of the home are mostly covered in glazing, allowing natural light into every corner of the home. Upon entry to the home, the focus is on the silhouette of the bespoke maple/glass/steel staircase visible against the full glass rear wall of the great room. Blue sky and the lake are framed against the structure that leads up to the LED-lit opaque glass floor with exposed steel framework, which from below, acts as a threshold between the dining and great room. The great room offers a 16-foot, solid maple entertainment unit surrounded by large porcelain tiles. The open concept main floor includes a glass-framed breakfast nook, dining room with temperature-controlled glass wine cellar, and a bamboo kitchen with views over the lake. The second floor houses four bedrooms, including the master, which features a

Lower Level Living While the main floor of 167 Lake Bend features 2,017 square feet of beautiful space, it’s the lower level that allows for living. The 1,418-square-foot lower level features 8.5-foot ceilings, as well as large unobstructed open areas, thanks to the steel beam construction that hides teleposts from sight. And since the home is built on a lookout lot, the lower level also features large windows, some as lofty as 10 feet wide. Flow was also an important aspect of the design for Discovery Homes. The stairs slope from the front of the house, ushering people down towards the back of the lower level, while the curved wall guides them to a seating

At 5,500 square feet, the home offers vaulted ceilings clad in pine, exposed fir beams, hickory flooring, and stone accent walls through the main floor, guiding guests to key focal points such as the great room’s custom fabricated iron fireplace, a four season sunroom overlooking the lake, and the kitchen’s 10-foot island wrapped in Quartz. Building Perfection Topping the list of reasons Bridgewater has become the fastest growing housing development in the city are new homes that ring all the bells. A good case in point is 23 Bridge Lake Drive in Bridgwater Lakes built by Southwynn Homes, a company operated by master builder Gerry Trottier that has created its longstanding reputation through a team approach focused on listening to customer needs and paying close attention to the details. That approach is clearly evident in this display home. At 1960 sq. ft., this ‘visitable’ bungalow is ideal for those with mobility issues, children in strollers, or people who are transitioning from a multi-storey residence to a bungalow as they age. “I am amazed by the detail and feel of the house,” says Marketer Jeff Brown of Sutton Group Kilkenny Real Estate, pointing to features like the 13-foot barrel ceiling in the great room, in-wall wiring for AV and security, and a 900-bottle wine cellar complete with leather tiled floor.

The layout offers four bedrooms, plus den and a media room. The lower level is a full walkout with heated wood flooring, and doors that open onto a yard leading to a walking path and lake views.

“People really need to see this home to get the full picture,” says Brown, inviting those seeking new home perfection to visit the showhome.

The kitchen boasts upgraded cabinets from Norcraft, including several glass panel cabinets, while the backsplash pulls in the colour red with tempered glass tiling. The two-tier, 7.5-foot island continues with smooth surfaces, featuring a Quartz countertop and seating for four. A glass and custom painted maple staircase leads up to the second floor landing, which looks out over the great room. Along with the master bedroom, which houses a large walk-in closet and ensuite, there are two additional bedrooms, and a family room, which features a porch overlooking the front yard. The fully finished walkout basement offers large windows, a fourth bedroom, a four-piece bath, and leads out to a stone patio and landscaped yard.

Where Dreams Come True Those looking to build their dream home should set their sights to Countryside Crossing in East St. Paul. Yes, there are other new development locations that offer much to those who are in the new home market, but Countryside Crossing is one of very few top tier new developments where buyers can pick their lot first, and then search out the best builder to make their new home dream a reality. “At Countryside Crossing the choices are all yours,” says Nolan Ploegman, President of Project Development, Concord Projects – the company behind Countryside Crossing. “You can buy your lot from a great selection, get your home drawings together, apply for a permit and start building almost right away,” he says, commenting further this is a perfect time to get going. Countryside Crossing is a two-phase project located inside the perimeter, but within the boundaries of East St. Paul. This means residents are just minutes away from Portage and Main, and within easy biking distance to grocery stores and coffee shops along Henderson Highway.

Mark and Wayne Penner of Royal LePage are handling the sales and marketing efforts. In addition to the ‘Do-It-Yourself ’ approach, Countryside Crossing also offers the services of four award-winning homebuilders – all with East St. Paul roots: Irwin Homes, Maric Homes, K. Streu Homes, and Warkentin Homes.

According to Ploegman, Phase II offers 78 sites with about 30 percent already spoken for. “There has been strong interest in Countryside Crossing, thanks to its location and ample lot sizes that let people build homes that meet lifestyle needs. Really, Countryside Crossing is a place where country lifestyle intersects with city services to make new home dreams come true.”

Where Innovation Meets Tradition On the hunt for a homebuilder? Go with experience, advises Kurt Streu, a craftsman who, alongside wife Heather, has created some of the province’s most innovative new residences since the ‘80s. Kurt has earned a reputation as a builder that pushes the envelope – his company was the first to use precast concrete in a new home design. Today, K. Streu Homes is hitting the mark with an approach to custom home construction that is both innovative and classic in its attention to detail. With a project list that includes massive 6000 sq. ft. residences to more modest 900 sq. ft. homes, Kurt and Heather have seen many changes over the past 25 plus years. “Hard surfaces are making a comeback; we’re seeing more hardwoods and less carpeting as people seek a cleaner interior environment. We’re also seeing more attention being paid to basements. Customers are looking for flexible

options as their families grow, so we’re building designs that use larger windows in lower levels right at the beginning so this area can be expanded later as needs for space increase,” he says, concluding that at K. Streu Homes they never build just a house.

“We are always aware that the end result of our labour is a home. A special place at the heart and center of a family’s life.” Visit www.kstreuhomes.com for more information

Escape the City By Lynne Mustard OAK BLUFF WEST IS A WORLD AWAY

Parkhill’s Showhome, 36 Casselman Crescent

“It’s definitely a contrast to city living,” states Lori Thorsteinson of Parkhill Homes. ”Our clients report that it’s very relaxing, with more of a country feel.” She attributes that in part to the wider lots that allow for more green space between the homes. The sense of spaciousness is “more aesthetically pleasing and very much appreciated by our clients,” Thorsteinson says.

She notes that the lots, at 70 to 80 feet wide, also provide greater privacy and allow for triple-car garages. Parkhill’s showhome on Casselman Crescent is a 1,700 square foot bungalow with three bedrooms and a triple-car garage. Reflecting the quality of home construction available in Oak Bluff West, the showhome has a wood structural floor, pile foundation and is built above the Manitoba Building Code for energy efficiency and structure. It is also beautifully enhanced with quality finishes: granite counters, tile backsplashes, hardwood and heated tile floors. With big backyards, homes in Oak Bluff West can have everything from outdoor kitchens to barbeque pits, vegetable or flower gardens, partysized patios or quiet sitting areas.  Empty nesters who no longer need a big yard are drawn to the bungalow

the Perimeter. This will eventually change the configuration of Oak Bluff ’s main street from highway to a more attractive, pedestrian-friendly street.

“The response has been very good. Out of the first seven units we released, we’ve sold four already and another one is our showhome. People have been waiting for something like this to be built; it suits their needs and their lifestyles.”

The new neighbourhood is also graced by wetlands, comprised of native grasses and wildflowers planted around small lakes. Scenic walking trails thread through the area; more wetlands and trails will be created as the neighbourhood expands. This more natural approach is part of Qualico Communities’ plan to create more environmentally sensitive developments that are healthier for people and wildlife.

Jaquet says they researched what people want in bungalow condominium design and tweaked the plans accordingly. The result is three floor plans, in sizes ranging from 1,455 to 1598 square feet. As units are grouped together into 3 and 4-plexes, each bungalow shares one wall or two with another unit. All have full basements and double garages; prices range from about $ 376,00 to $ 385,000. If the rural nature of this new neighbourhood appeals, it will soon get even more attractive. Oak Bluff West is growing along the western edge of Oak Bluff, which is located just past the Perimeter, where McGillivray meets Highway 2. Eric Vogan of Qualico Communities advises that the Province is planning to relocate the intersection of Highway 3 and

As seven builders are at work in the new neighbourhood, there is a wide variety of home styles available at a range of prices. Custom Builder, Custom Approach

At Parkhill Homes every design and every customer is unique. It’s this custom approach that has earned the Winnipeg builder numerous awards, including Gold and Silver at the recent Fall 2013 Parade of Homes, the city’s showcase of newly built housing.

“Homes need to be organized and well functioning, and they need to offer ‘wow factor’ to be relevant in today’s market. People are so much more knowledgeable these days. They know what they want and we work to make their new home dreams a reality. Ours is a custom approach where each home we build is as different as the buyer.” Thorsteinson notes that each property they build is constructed without compromise. Consider, she says, that Parkhill projects all start with a pile foundation and homes are constructed using the very latest energy efficient techniques and products. For example, rather than go with

double pane windows with argon inserts, Parkhill’s homes are built using only triple pane windows for maximum energy efficiency. “We believe this is the best and we won’t cut corners on quality,” says Thorsteinson, commenting that Parkhill Homes builds in value that holds over time. Good examples of Parkhill’s attention to detail can be viewed at their showhomes in Oak Bluff West at 36 Casselman, and in South Pointe at 30 Vestford Place. Both are contemporary design bungalows perfect for young families to empty nesters. According to Thorsteinson, the properties are 1700 square foot residences with formal dining and

great rooms. The home in Oak Bluff West also features a triple garage, as well as a fully finished lower level complete with a bar and two bedrooms. Parkhill’s showhomes are styled with hardwoods, heated ceramic flooring, granite countertops, central air, alarm systems and more. “We design properties for people who want to really live. Our inhouse design team and our personal approach allow us to create the right plan to help people move up to a new height in residential living.”

“For us, it all starts with an understanding of the homebuyer and their needs,” says Lori Thorsteinson, Sales Manager Parkhill Homes and owner broker of Loren Realty. She suggests important questions such as – ‘What are the ages of the children?’ and ‘How much entertaining do you do?’ - all contribute to a new home design that works with a family’s lifestyle.

Style and Substance

By Lynne Mustard

“Sage Creek is very well received by our clients,” states Frank Cotroneo, of Artista Homes. “We’ve been getting a lot of feedback. They like the fact that there’s freedom of expression allowed in how they want to build their home.” There are Architectural Guidelines in place in Sage Creek “but Qualico Communities strongly encourages the builders to be creative, and the result is diverse and unique home designs,” Cotroneo explains.

According to Eric Vogan of Qualico Communities, there will be more growth in the Village Centre this year with the addition of a drugstore, restaurants and possibly a liquor store as well.

Vision Realized “Sage Creek is absolutely coming into its own,” states Jason Arlt of Arlt Homes. “People can see that Qualico’s vision for the community is being realized. There’s so much substance now; people who already live in Sage Creek are proud of their area and this is attracting new people into the community. Qualico Communities has done a stellar job of combining the design, the quality, the feel and the group of builders. It’s all coming together.” With 16 builders at work in Sage Creek, there’s an exceptional diversity of home styles available, something to suit every age and

Artista’s showhome is an upscale walkout with elegant open spaces, glass railings, dramatic staircase and a gym, while Arlt’s includes an outstanding architectural feature: a sunroom with southern exposure and floorto-ceiling glass walls. In total, Sage Creek will have 14 showhomes open for the Spring Parade, as well as two condo display suites. When Sage Creek is completed it will be home to some 4,500 people. Vogan believes that the obvious availability of services and quality of the homes will continue to entice folks to choose the community. He’s pleased with the residents’ enthusiasm for their neighbourhood.

Eight school. 2014 will also see the installation of two new miniplaygrounds; a third will be added at a later date.

The Nature Conservancy of Canada Partnership Sage Creek, with its many wetlands and extensive system of walking trails, is already recognized as an environmentally friendly neighbourhood. This attribute, an essential part of its character, is very important to Qualico Communities, Winnipeg.

“We’ve learned a lot about creating realistic, sustainable initiatives in our neighbourhoods,” states Vogan. “Beyond that, we’ve looked at our larger environment and recognized that southern Manitoba has lots of beautiful, natural spaces that cannot be replicated in the city. Therefore, we’ve partnered with the Nature Conservancy of Canada, and our financial support will help them add to their protective landholdings in the Assiniboine Valley. We’re thrilled about that and I feel very good about the way Sage Creek and Qualico Communities is heading,” he concludes.

“Already the Sage Creek Residents’ Association is showing its muscle,” states Vogan. “It’s a strong group with lots of participation that gives us invaluable help in shaping the details of the neighbourhood. We certainly enjoy working with them.” Construction will begin this year on a new, important component of Sage Creek: an English and French immersion Kindergarten to Grade

He adds that Sage Creek’s location, east of Lagimodière and just south of Bishop Grandin, is great, with many different routes to access downtown or a quick escape to the Lake of the Woods. Another draw is the substantial commercial development in the Village Centre. There’s a long list of places already open: Sobeys, TD Bank, No. 27 Station Fire Hall, Tim Hortons, RBC Royal Bank, Sage Creek Animal Hospital, Wyatt Dowling Insurance, Sage Creek Dental Centre, and a Shell Station with a convenience store and car wash.

In The Details As a previous Parade of Homes showhome, KDR Design Builders’ 148 Blue Sun Drive presents well. The extra attention to detail you’d find in a custom home can be seen the moment you step onto the lakeside property in Sage Creek, from the interlocking driveway to a beautifully landscaped yard. The dark tiled foyer opens up into a great room featuring hand-scraped maple hardwoods, and a custom entertainment wall that houses a ribbon fireplace, cutting edge tile accents, and a vertical red pillar for a pop of colour and architectural appeal. Large windows flanked by luxurious drapery make up the entire back wall, allowing for a great view of the lake. The same panorama can be seen from the kitchen, which hosts professional quality appliances, two-tone therma-foil cabinets, stainless steel accents, and a sleek 10-foot island that can seat six to eight people, making it the perfect space for entertaining. You can also access the aluminum and glass deck that boasts a spiral staircase down to the fully landscaped backyard.

durability and includes features such as walnut trim and high gloss Kitchen Craft cabinets. The lower level has been left unfinished, allowing for future development if needed.

“We never settle for compromises. Our goal is to build homes where you can live like royalty but not have to pay for the crown jewels,” he says.

This home, complete with all these extra details, is ready for immediate possession.

No Compromise Builder Heinz Albers knows a thing or two about new home construction. A German-trained craftsman, Heinz has been wowing Canadians with his uncompromising attention to detail and design innovations for more than 40 years. What he brings to each job is an understanding of the needs of growing families and the knowledge that a new home purchase is a very big deal to every customer. “Canadians are very fussy, so you must work hard to make sure every little detail is perfect,” he says. Albers reports that his company, H. Albers Builders Ltd., builds just five or six homes a year. “I watch everything and supervise all aspects of construction,” he says, adding that he hires top trades people to get the job done under his watchful eye. A good case in point is his new showhome at 3 Redmoon Road in Sage Creek. Available in the $475,000 range, the 1685 sq. ft. bungalow offers a two-car garage and a lot of interior attractions. Southern Style For South Pointe residents Ron and Vanessa Ledohowski, the neighbourhood is all about location. They are both RE/MAX REALTORS®, as well as sales professionals for Gino’s Homes, and as such, are well acquainted with the array of new home developments around Winnipeg.

“South Pointe is also situated in a less congested area of the south-end, which means traffic is seldom a concern. I can easily hit the Perimeter or Bishop Grandin to skirt bad traffic, and find myself quickly in other parts of the city,” he adds. Because the Ledohowski couple represent Gino’s Homes and purchased one of the company’s show properties, they could have located in almost any new home community. However, the attributes of South Pointe swayed them. “Before we decided on South Pointe, we researched the area and found that the community is very accommodating and inclusive. South Pointe is very reflective of the multi-cultural

aspect of Canada today. I think it makes the neighbourhood really interesting and vibrant,” notes Ron. South Pointe also offers much in terms of its attention to the outdoors. The community is home to an extensive trail and sidewalk system that takes residents through a range of terrain from streetscape to pond shore. For example, while many communities utilize drainage ponds that are bordered by gravel and landscaping, South Pointe has let Mother Nature do the heavy lifting in a wetlands lake system that offers an environment with an appearance as natural as one would expect to find in a more remote setting. Further, the upland ecosystem involves about 30 plant species that grow away from the wetlands. These native species planted at South Pointe have been chosen to suit specific growing conditions of different areas of the site, with flowering native species changing the floral landscape from June through August.

well as offer space for special needs students. There are plans for a learning resource centre and library, band and music room, physical education and health facility, science technology education room, outdoor learning environment, and practical arts classroom.

Also accommodating youth, the Pembina Trails School Division is planning an 86,000-squarefoot Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold Standard school that will provide services to 600 students from early learning stage to the Grade 8 level. With a completion date of spring 2016, the new facility will be built on 8.8 acres at the southeast corner of Waverley Street and Tim Sale Drive in the South Pointe area known as Waverley West. The school will also house a new 114-space childcare centre, as

According to Borger the school represents a nice finishing touch with Phase I now complete. “Now we are moving on to the next phase of development,” he says, reporting that Phase II will be 640 acres across Kenaston Blvd. “With lot sales in Phase I averaging around 200 sites a year, the public has spoken about the quality of South Pointe, making it one of the fastest growing new communities in the city. Our expectations are that this acceptance will continue with the next neighbourhood.”

Given its attributes, it comes as no surprise that South Pointe stands out as one of the city’s most successful new home communities. This year, developer Ladco will complete the entirety of Phase I with 1400 single-family lots fully serviced on a 460-acre site. “The servicing of Phase I means that all the green spaces will be completed, as well as the trails and other

“The fact it’s so close to the U of M, restaurants, shopping and entertainment means South Pointe is a location that really fits our family’s lifestyle,” says Ron, who comments that the neighbourhood also provides easy access to highway exit points, something that makes a weekend trip to the cottage a breeze.

Extraordinary Design – Exceptional Quality

By Todd Lewys

For almost three decades, Huntington Homes has enjoyed a reputation for building superior custom homes. The two brothers who founded Huntington Homes 27 years ago, Sheldon Swan and Rob Swan, say their pursuit of perfection has played a key role in the company’s success.

In 1990 – after researching and testing the best available products and technologies over a three year period – the brothers changed 156 typical custom building practices with the goal of eliminating typical problems in custom home building. “When we made those huge changes, we heard comments from showhome visitors that other builders were saying that we were over building – that we must have thought we were building a commercial building, or something,” says Rob. “We knew

A quarter century later, many of the changes Huntington Homes made to building specifications have become the standard in the marketplace. Since that time, hundreds of other additions and changes have driven the evolution of Huntington’s building techniques. “There isn’t a day that goes by that we still don’t seek better ways to build and perfect the specifications and processes that allow our homes to stand the test of time,” says Sheldon. Although their showhomes are a great place to view outstanding finishing and design concepts, it’s best to tour a home that’s under construction with one of their sales representatives. “That’s the best way to truly see the real story behind the walls and see how we build to a higher standard,” Rob notes.

“A client’s life doesn’t go on hold when they’re building a custom home. They still need to work, take kids to their activities, and live their life,” states Rob. “Our job is to provide guidance to help our clients enjoy the experience of custom building and to be as much fun and as stress-free as possible. To do that, we set up a format and timelines that makes clients more efficient and timely in their selections – and ensures their home will be built on time and on budget. Everyone is happy.” Home designs are conceived via CAD software that Huntington believes to be the best available in the world. The 3-D graphics are lifelike, and allow clients to see exactly what their home will

look like when built. “A little anxiety removal is always a good thing,” says Rob. “Our goal is to create an extraordinary home for our clients – one that’s functional, livable and that reflects their unique tastes,” Rob explains. “Our job is to provide our clients with the best possible design choices, and we believe the CAD software we use does that. The result, a better home in every aspect.” If you’re thinking of custom building a new home, you owe it to yourself to check out Huntington Homes. Extraordinary design…. exceptional quality…….. the standard in every Huntington Home – which is why Huntington Homes is the choice of discerning new home buyers.

Huntington Homes’ stellar reputation is not only derived from the superior quality of their homes, but also from the way they work closely with their clients to build their dream home. Most clients have never had a custom home built before. Consequently, they need to be guided through the process of design and selections in an efficient, expert manner. “The high quality of our homes isn’t an accident. We’ve always used products and technologies that stand the test of time and perform optimally in our extreme climate,” says Sheldon. “Winnipeg experiences the largest temperature fluctuations of any city in the world over 300,000. We don’t just use superior techniques and technologies because it’s our nature, we also believe our climate demands it – and because our clients demand excellence.”

that this was just the right way to do things.”

City Central By Lynne Mustard Demand High for Custom Homes of Pointe Hébert The charming downtown neighbourhood of Pointe Hébert, bordered by Rue Messager at Taché, is being revitalized to offer “urban living at its finest,” states Dan Rolfe of Maric Homes. Maric is one of the three custom builders that Qualico Communities has enlisted to realize its vision of rejuvenating this neighbourhood in the heart of old St. Boniface. KDR Design Builders and Hearth Homes are also working on distinctive designs to meet the Architectural Standards that Qualico established to ensure an eclectic harmony of home styles in the ‘new’ neighbourhood. “Once the homes go up, the streetscape is going to be very interesting. There will be nothing like it in Winnipeg,” predicts Rolfe. There was a strong initial rush to purchase lots and Rolfe believes that once people see the custom homes that are now under construction, there

Architect’s Rendering, KDR Homes, Pointe Hébert will be a second wave of excited demand. Domenica Vassallo of KDR Design Builders states they experienced the same rush. “We can’t keep up with the demand. The land sells practically before we can offer it! This is a unique and highly prestigious area.”

There will be only 33 single-family home sites in Pointe Hébert. All three builders are excited by the opportunity to marry quality and creativity in their home designs for the pocket neighbourhood. “This location has so much to offer,” Rolfe declares. “People who don’t want to commute from a new home in the suburbs can build a new home right downtown.”

homes and neighbourhoods

As befits an older established neighbourhood, the lots are narrower, just 32 to 34 feet wide but approximately 122 feet deep, with back lane access. The fully serviced lots start at around $140,000, and Qualico Communities has newly paved the streets and lanes involved. Pointe Hébert will feature two-storey homes that range in size from 1,500 square feet to over 1,800 square feet, with three bedrooms and a finished lower level. All will have double garages that must reflect the architectural style of the home. Although garages are on the lane and detached, it’s possible to create connection with a mudroom or breezeway.

The River Trail 88 | STYLE MANITOBA | SPRING 2014

Vassallo says that KDR has created a unique “thru-way” that enables the homeowner to access the garage from inside their home. She adds that some KDR home designs feature a rooftop terrace, to fully capture the dramatic views of downtown Winnipeg and the Red River.

KDR, Maric and Hearth Homes are incorporating various design elements such as front balconies and inviting porches, oversize windows and grand entries to take advantage of the neighbourhood’s special location. “Because the floor plans are long and narrow, you need to be more creative in your use of space,” states Liam Milne of Hearth Homes. He adds that exteriors may have ‘old world’ or French Provincial touches, but interiors are entirely contemporary in design. “Every house will be different from the next,” Milne states. “There will be no repetition. Because Pointe Hébert is located within an existing neighbourhood where homes styles vary widely, the eclectic approach will fit in very well with the unique, older homes that are already there.” He says buyers have a lot of options and room to play in their choice of home design and materials. “I’m vey excited to see Pointe Hébert in its completion. I think it’s going to be an amazing neighbourhood.” Rue Messager overlooks both the river and Whittier Park, where the Festival du Voyageur is held. “Lots of people come to Winnipeg for the Festival and this street of remarkable homes is what they’ll see. It will showcase the city very well,” declares Milne.

Destination Delivers

Lifestyle rules at Creek Bend Hollow. Located at St. Anne’s Road and the Perimeter, Creek Bend Hollow is a gated condo development targeted to people with active lives and tastes for inspired design.

“The developers have located large lots on beautiful river and street sites. Already we have seen the river lots snapped up, leaving a good selection of ample-sized street lots where we have luxury condos from 1595 square feet to 1850 square feet,” says Matthew.

“The designs take everything into account. For example, garages are oversized and are perfect for a couple of cars and maybe a motorcycle, ATV or a Seadoo. The architecture is timeless as well,” he says, noting that the colour palette and the

designs are such that in 25 years the houses will not have a dated appearance. “The exteriors are maintenance free and really follow the idea that the residents of Creek Bend Hollow have other more pressing pursuits than painting trim or finding new roofing. This is a location where the details have been worked out and all the touches have been added so you can just enjoy the kind of lifestyle Creek Bend affords.” The Creek Bend Hollow lifestyle gives you freedom. Indeed, residents can walk away from Winnipeg winters or enjoy a weekend at the cottage without security concerns while they relax in second homes or on resort beaches.

“Creek Bend Hollow is just 20 minutes from the James Richardson Airport, and its location means easy access to quick exit routes to places like Kenora or Gimli,” notes Matthew. Nature is also close at hand with Creek Bend itself located amid hiking trails along the Seine River and through Royal Wood forest. Nicolas reports that Creek Bend Hollow’s showhome is now ready for viewing at 150 Creek Bend Road. For more information on the benefits of the new community, he invites people to also visit the development’s website at www.creekbendhollow.com

Caution: Irrestible Lifestyle By Lynne Mustard Custom Condo Bungalows Hot in Pritchard Farm Southlands Village Jason Arlt of Arlt Homes gives a lot of credit for the construction activity in Pritchard Farm Southlands Village to the residents themselves. “Wordof-mouth about the convenience of the lifestyle is spreading. Every time I speak with one of our clients there, she says, ‘I’m so glad I chose to live here! It works out so well for my life’.

“I like the community so much, I’m moving there myself,” Arlt confides. “It offers the best of what I’m looking for in terms of having a single-family feel and having the yard maintained. It just makes sense for me to build in Pritchard Farm Southlands Village. Plus there’s the proximity to the city and to the cottage. I’m excited!” he exclaims. Ravi Joshi of Qualico Communities reports that 63 of the 83 lots in Pritchard Farm Southlands Village are sold, and about 40 homes are

An Arlt Homes bungalow condominium, Pritchard Farm Southlands Village now occupied. With only 20 lots left, he anticipates the appealing development will be sold out in the next 12 to 14 months.

Dry creek bed, Pritchard Farm Southlands Village landscaping

“The whole experience is a custom experience, from the moment you buy your lot from one of our three participating builders, to completion of your home, which includes the landscaping you would like to have,” says Joshi. Arlt, Maric and Irwin Homes, each a custom builder, have showhomes open in Pritchard Farm Southlands Village for the Spring Parade of Homes. All three offer high quality, distinctive homes that take advantage of the beautiful, rural setting. “The lots start at $124,900 and that includes a landscaped yard and a fully installed irrigation system. It’s a pretty enticing price,” Joshi observes. These inclusions eliminate a considerable amount of work and cost for the homebuyer.

Pritchard Farm Southlands Village streetscape

The landscaping of the neighbourhood itself is quite striking. Qualico Communities carefully sculpted a dry creek garden so that it meanders between many of the homes and along the property’s southern edge. Planted with perennials, it provides marvellous colour throughout the seasons. The quiet waters of Southlands Creek define the community’s northern border. For now, a choice of lots is still available: some with a serene water view, others with the picturesque garden vista and a few with both. Joshi says the homes vary in size, but that the average square footage of the homes is about 1,800 square feet. “People are downsizing and the condo market is starting to come into its own. When people look at what options are available,

these bungalow condominiums make sense to them,” he notes. “There’s also a strong sense of community that the residents really enjoy. They have all the advantages of living in their own detached home, combined with the advantages of a condominium where things are taken care of for them. They don’t have to worry about grasscutting or snow-shovelling, especially when it’s minus 40 outside and the snowblower won’t start!” He suggests that people looking for a simplified life, with all the benefits of a detached home but none of the responsibility for outdoor maintenance, should give it serious consideration. Pritchard Farm Southlands Village offers a lifestyle that’s proving irresistible. SPRING 2014 | STYLE MANITOBA | 93

Pritchard Farm Southlands Village is a condominium neighbourhood of custom-built, detached bungalows located in East St. Paul. Homeowners hold title to their lots and homes but the rest is common property, maintained by the Property Manager, for a fee of about $180 per month. The service includes timely snow removal on front steps, sidewalks and driveways, and all maintenance of the gorgeous landscaping throughout the neighbourhood, including the care of each resident’s yard.

All-in Attraction

“The building quality is fantastic,” says Laura Ross, mentioning concrete construction, a big plus in terms of sound abatement and overall building durability, and the eco-friendly design that keeps heating and cooling costs down to generate a smaller environmental footprint. More, designs call for amenities such as heated indoor parking, something Winnipeggers have come to love given the challenges of our

environment. Condos also feature a bike locker in the underground parking area, as well as on-floor storage. “What many would consider an upgrade is included in the original design, making these condos truly turnkey properties,” she says, pointing to a plan that utilizes Kohler plumbing fixtures, engineered hardwood flooring and granite or Caesar Stone counters.

Affordability is key with prices as low as $221,900 including GST. To sweeten the attraction still further, Ross comments that buyers only need to put down five percent of the price at offer with the rest due at possession. “Winnipeggers know a good deal when they see one. The combination of experienced developer, fantastic location and stunning all-in designs has made this condominium property worth the wait.”

“Already we have seen strong support with 25 to 30 percent of units now sold,” says Realtor® Laura Ross who together with her sister Marnie – The Ross Sisters & Associates – is presenting these properties to prospective buyers. They report that they have noticed a lot of the interest is coming from those who already call the Lindenwoods and Tuxedo neighbourhoods home, a point that speaks volumes about the quality of life enjoyed in this growing south-end community. Developed by Towers Realty Group, Oxbow of Tuxedo Point will offer eight unique layouts from which to choose, ranging in size from 794 square feet to 1426 square feet.

District Living By Kelly Gray loft style condominiums, creating a work and play environment unlike any other area in the city. Newest among the group of conversions to historic buildings in Winnipeg’s East Exchange are addresses at 110 James Avenue and 132 James Avenue. Here, each suite is character rich with exposed brick and 100-year-old timber beams. “Urban Winnipeggers just can’t get enough of our incredibly unique conversion lofts featuring ceilings as high as 14ft, exposed original brick

walls, century old wood beams, and the modern conveniences of a new condo,” says Marty Maykut, StreetSide Development’s Vice President of Multi-Family Development for Manitoba, Saskatchewan and NW Ontario. “With more commercial and residential plans in the works, and walking paths along the river close by, this part of the Exchange has become an amazing location.” According to Maykut, part of the uniqueness is the distinct collection of floor plans. “Almost no two are alike, meaning that if you really have your heart set on a one-of-akind plan, you better act fast,” he says, adding that some suites even feature converted elevator shafts and old vaults as spacious walk-in closets. Some plans have a second

BRINGING THE OUTDOORS IN:

THE TRANSFORMATIVE NATURE OF STONE

before

Stone has been one of the most popular building materials in the world for thousands of years, conveying a sense of permanence, endurance, fortitude, and timelessness. Having stood the test of time, it continues to be widely used, not only as a building material, but also as a means for personal expression through design. Stone has the ability to artfully blend with other natural elements and produce an end result overflowing with optical varieties and textural differences. For years, stone was most commonly used to transform the exterior of the home, but today there is a growing trend among leading architects and interior designers to bring nature indoors. Fuelling the popularity of interior stone design is the refinement of architectural stone veneers

Security and home automation specialist Sean Banks wants people to get wired. Banks and his business partner Kyle Kubic run K&S Electronics, a Winnipeg company they formed seven years ago to address the growing need for home theatre and audio visual systems, as well as home security in both the new home and renovation markets.

Get Wired

Today, K&S works with the province’s leading homebuilders and contractors who look to Banks and Kubic to wire new and existing homes to make the most of modern entertainment equipment and security setups. The idea is to make systems as unobtrusive as humanly possible and make certain that the connections are done properly the first time. “Now you can control many aspects of your home with your iPhone or iPad. We have the systems to make this a reality,” he says, pointing to Control 4, a home automation platform that offers one-touch home theatre, lighting and temperature control, Multi-room Music and integrated security where homeowners can monitor properties from virtually anywhere. Control 4 also integrates a wide range of products, including door locks, window shades, pool controllers, appliance monitors and much more. “We are currently working with Shaw Cable Systems to offer an incredible promotion that gets new homes pre-wired for free,” says Sean.

102 | STYLE MANITOBA | SPRING 2014

The promotion is called Welcome Home, and new homebuyers can have K&S install wiring and five media outlets free of charge. More, Shaw is offering a full year of cable and Internet free, and a home phone for $15 a month with the promo.

“We even offer a free alarm system if we can do the security monitoring,” he says, inviting people to visit their website for more information. www.kandselectronics.com -

Built for the Builder By Carly peters

When a homebuilder designs their own house, you know it’s going to be created with exact specs. Randy and Suzanne Marquette, owners of New Generation Homes, worked with Kitchen Craft to create a two-tone kitchen that is their ideal space in which to prep, cook and entertain. The open concept kitchen features 10-foot ceilings and an abundance of natural light, thanks to a glass patio door leading to the backyard and a six-foot window above the dual kitchen sink. “The window was very important to them, as it has such a great view to the backyard. So we worked the rest of the kitchen around that,” says Andy Schultz, designer on the project for Kitchen Craft. Because of the open feel of the space, the cabinetry could take on a darker hue without the kitchen feeling cramped. The main set of cherry wood cabinetry is stained in Toffee, and features a wide rail style door. This design offers a dome like edge, giving it a softer curve. The same shade can be found further into the kitchen, where the couple’s small microwave rests on top of an extra drawer, and under a set of angled

cabinets. The middle door features tempered glass, breaking up the solid wood set for a lighter look. Further, the Toffee style cabinets and drawers front the dishwasher and kitchen’s refrigerator door panels for a seamless appearance. The two focal points of the space take it a tone darker - cherry wood in Thunder. The cooking hearth, which features an induction cooktop, stove, and pot taps set into a white tile backsplash, is flanked by two towers that are, in fact, pullout pantries. “Suzanne does a lot of cooking and this way she can have everything at her fingertips,” he says, adding there is additional storage space above the stove. There is also additional room for prep on the 12-foot, angled island that houses a secondary sink, beverage centre, and casual seating for guests. Just around the corner, Kitchen Craft also created custom cabinets that act as charger spots for the couple’s electronics, which power the fully automated home. SPRING 2014 | STYLE MANITOBA | 103

Kitchen Workforce By Carly Peters The kitchen is the heart of the home. Used for both preparation and entertainment, everything from counters to cabinets to appliances must be practical, and people are investing in products that can get the job done. Dishwashers have the tough job of taking on loads of grease and stuck-on foods, and some just don’t cut it. Some top comments on dishwashers include complaints about having to pre-rinse dishes; tough, stuck-on foods, such as egg, do not come off; and dried-on foods like

cereal, are not removed by the dishwasher. One in five consumers are also unsatisfied with the drying cycle on their dishwashers. KitchenAid has launched a new line of dishwashers to specifically address customers’ top needs. Washing performance is enhanced by the company’s EQ Wash System. The pressureoptimizing wash arms concentrate cleaning into powerful sprays for thorough washing, while the new ProScrub Trio features 40 spray jets on the bottom rack for an intense targeted wash. Twenty more jets on the top rack clean messes inside deeper, oddly shaped items. The large rack and wide spacing allows for more water to reach those dirty dishes. The extra space also allows for superior drying once the wash cycle is complete. The ProDry™ Option utilizes a fan and a heating element that work together to ensure dishes come out dry and spotless at the end of every cycle. From fresh clean dishes to fresh food, KitchenAid has reset the bar with their new fridge model loaded with premium features. Dual sequential evaporators provide optimal temperature and humidity levels to help keep food fresh and protect it from spoilage, while the FreshFlow™ Produce Preserver absorbs ethylene gas and helps delay over-ripening of fresh produce up to 25 percent. The

FreshFlow™ Air Filtration also helps reduce common food odours. This French door refrigerator features the Platinum Luminesse interior design - an industry exclusive offering of silver, glossy walls - making it look good while working great. Both of these appliances and more can be seen at Dufresne, which offers the largest selection of KitchenAid products in Manitoba. SPRING 2014 | STYLE MANITOBA | 105

Going With Glass

There are those who want to top their counters with the traditional, but for someone who wants a little flair, GEOS recycled glass countertops make a perfect choice. Western Marble, Granite & Tile (WMGT) installed this kitchen counter for an ultra modern home in Winnipeg. The specially ordered colour, Juneau, features pops of blue, brown and grey, and has a proven proprietary binder that ensures a strong and durable countertop which does not require sealing. Along with being eco-friendly, GEOS offers a wide range of evocative tones, flecked with jewels of colour. The counter also features a virtually seamless mitered waterfall edge, giving this focal point feature a clean, finished look. The company can also produce stunning bars, vanity tops, tub surrounds, hearths, full backsplashes, and even a feature wall in a glass shower with this recycled glass material. Precise cuts, perfect edges and smooth corners are WMGT’s specialty, the only stone fabricator in Manitoba to boast a wet saw that converts to water jet technology. The pen-hole size stream produces enough psi to cut through hard materials, and is capable of producing intricate cuts. Now under new ownership, WMGT also has one of the province’s largest selections of granite, quartz, marble and tile in their showroom, and professional associates to help you make the right selection for your needs.

Bright Ideas By Carly Peters

LED technology makes more headway into the residential market Light Emitting Diode (LED) technology has been around for many years, but not typically bright enough or the right colour temperature for ambient lighting systems. But with new innovations within the lighting industry, homeowners can get all the benefits of LED technology with the same brightness, warmth, and design as traditional fixtures. “This is a very exciting time in the world of lighting, as there have been many advances in the utilization of LED technology and its integration into the world of commercial and residential lighting systems,” states Alison Demaré BID, Branch Manager for Robinson Lighting Ltd. “Light output has increased significantly from LEDs, as well as the ability to adjust the colour temperatures. Both of these advances have assisted in LED technology being utilized far more in residential lighting.”

Most people are aware that LEDs are more energy efficient and long lasting than incandescent or halogen technology, but due to the small and flexible nature of LEDs the design applications can be limitless as well. “The idea having to design a light fixture around a traditional A lamp [regular light bulb] is no longer,” she says, adding Robinson Lighting has a large selection of beautifully designed LED wall, vanity, and outdoor fixtures. WAC lighting is one company that prides itself not only on leading edge technology and environmentally responsible manufacturing processes for light fixtures, but also for innovative designs in track lighting, picture lights, sconces, and various collections of pendants.

It is important to us to have a strong business relationship with the company in order to provide customer service in the future. Replacement warranties mean nothing if the company is no longer in business in a year.” Robinson Lighting’s knowledgeable lighting specialists have extensive training and are up to date in the latest in regards to LED products. Cottage Life

By Carly Peters

Jen Derrett, retail floor manager.

It’s time to start thinking about your summer home’s flooring. As a second home in the summer, people are more inclined to treat their cottage décor and flooring like they would their every-day house. Durability, affordability, and of course, design are all musthaves. And as the snow starts to disappear, aspirations of cottage renovations begin to grow. “People come to the store daily asking for advice on what products they should consider using for their cottage,” states Jen Derrett, retail floor manager. Derrett suggests a great option for cottages is LVP- Luxury Vinyl Plank or Tile thanks to its durability, its waterproof quality, and the availability of various installation methods. “The product ranges in thickness from 1/8 to 1/4 inch thick so it can

be easily installed without height issues, and is offered in full gluedown, locking, or on an adhesive pad,” she says. The product is also quite DIYfriendly. “To make a cut, you score it with a knife and it snaps so you don’t need to get a saw out or worry about making a mess,” states Derrett. “This can be a very do-ityourself product or for a cottage where access isn’t the easiest.” Even if you install it yourself, the look of LVP is purely professional. Du Chateau’s Vinyl Deluxe Collection features realistic textures, patterns, and colours that authentically create the rich warmth of natural hardwood in a durable, low-maintenance alternative to real wood flooring. “The visual on Du Chateau’s Vinyl Deluxe Collection in the colour Matterhorn caught my eye across the room full of displays at the Vegas Surfaces Show where I scout for new products... I knew I had to have it,” she gushes.

If you’re looking for a less woodsy feel, Derrett suggests Mannington’s Adura line, which features both vinyl wood planks and tile in over 75 different patterns. “You can even use grout for the tiles if you wish,” she states. “Most people have no idea it’s not a ceramic tile when the job is completed.” Clients can see how the tiles look in person at The Floor Show, which also hosts everything from hardwoods to carpets for the cottage renovator.

design&decor We Heart Italia

People have always looked to Europe for design inspiration whether it be fashion, or in this case, furniture. The Tivoli collection from Alf Italia, made in Italy, is featured in a Grey Oak Veneer, and steers away from the typical trends seen coming out of Europe. “With European products, you usually see a high-gloss finish, but in this collection they are really showing off the workmanship and the wood grain. The introduction of this flat finish gives it a rustic, yet smooth look,” states Riccardo Mandarano of Contessa Home Decor / Contessa Fine Furniture. “Yet, the collection is also available in glossy Imperia White.” “Italians like to play with their wood grains. You’ll see the inlay will go one direction on the left side of the dresser, and the other way on the right,” explains Mandarano. “It gives it that extra detail.” Chrome accents on the dresser carry into the legs on the chest and bed frame, contrasting with the natural material for a contemporary look. The fashionable frame can also offer function with add-on under bed storage. The double-panel headboard, which features an optional lighting track, also moves away from the norm - not standing straight up, but slightly sloping towards the wall giving it that extra sense of style. Tivoli can be seen at Contessa’s showroom at 103-3000 McGillivray Blvd.

Any pattern can be created in wood, and then laid over glass. The detailed chrome handles bring an added touch of glamour to the white finish and crown moulding. The doors are flanked by flutes that double as innovative storage options. On the left is a pullout full-length mirror, while the right flute hosts jewellery storage. This can be further customized with additional hooks or knobs to suit other storage needs. Additional jewellery storage is found beneath the inset mirror on the left. The first drawer is lined with ivory fabric that matches the woodwork, while the second houses acrylic dividers that can be used for lingerie, men’s belts, or ties. The lower drawer is a hamper, which tilts out and tucks away dirty laundry. The inset shelf is a nice décor touch, and is also a bench for putting on shoes, or just sitting and admiring all your clothes.

It’s also a safer choice for interior installation, as all the laminates – high-gloss or

other – are GREENGUARD certified, ensuring the materials have low chemical emissions. On the softer side of the brand’s line is HGTV Home Flooring’s carpet, a green, durable alternative to hard surfaces. The company’s Anso Nylon carpet line is made from recycled material, so it’s gentle on the environment, yet tough enough to withstand wear and tear, along with stains. In fact, this fibre offers the company’s highest stain resistance warranty - coverage that runs from the date your carpet is installed for as long as you own it - protecting against stain, soil, pet urine, and abrasive wear. The heartiness of the Anso Nylon certainly doesn’t take away from the feel. Whether you choose loop, patterned, textured, or twist, the carpet is still soft to the hand, and easy on the eye, ranging from beiges, blues, browns and grays, to greens, oranges, reds and violets. Curtis Carpets & Flooring is the exclusive source for all the lines of flooring from everyone’s favourite renovation and decoration channel.
