storey walkout strikes the perfect balance between fashion and function on each of its three levels. “While fashion is undeniably paramount, the first priority is to create a layout where every room and feature of the home satisfies specific client needs and desires,” says Swan. “The overall layouts of the homes we design aren’t general – they are totally customized designs that showcase particular design features in every room, features that go well beyond the floor plan itself,” he explains. “Our homes are true custom designs in every respect - homes that are ultra-specific to the needs of our clients on a room-to-room basis. I think 130 Lake Bend does a great job of showcasing how we balance function and fashion throughout a home.” This home’s spectacular yet practical design is evident the moment you set foot in the extra wide tiled foyer with its 20-foot ceiling. eyes are immediately drawn to a modern oak staircase with open risers that angles upwards in brisk, linear style between glass stairwell inserts and stainless posts. At the same time, the soaring ceiling continues on the other side of a column-like wall featuring three etched glass panels, an artistic yet functional design feature. The staircase that takes you up to the elevated office is also a functional work of art. “The open concept office was space placed by a collection of piano windows beneath a high ceiling, and is highlighted by a series of six gorgeous, open beams above,” says Swan. “It’s an area that was designed to provide a calming, inspirational atmosphere.” Meanwhile, the adjacent great room is a study in aesthetics and ergonomics. The high ceiling and collection of (six) floor-to-ceiling windows is the start of an alluring space that features a breathtaking wetland view. “It’s actually larger than most formal dining rooms,” says Swan. Last but certainly not least is the well-appointed chef ’s kitchen. “It’s a spacious, functional layout that won’t disappoint even the most discriminating buyer – it’s equal parts panache and practicality. ART One look at the home at 130 Lake Bend Road in Bridgwater Lakes and it’s hard to believe it could be any more fabulous. Built by Huntington Homes and the winner of last year’s Gold Medal at the Parade of Homes, the property offers 2000 sq. ft. over two floors, plus an additional 1522 sq. ft. in the lower level walkout. Inside, it’s a masterpiece of soaring ceilings, stunning wetland views and executive décor that include a spa-like ensuite, floor to ceiling windows and unique design touches such as a ribbon fireplace. Indeed, the property wowed judges during the Parade.

What is also wowing people is the ease of automation that comes with this new property. Here Huntington Homes turned to Advance and their ART (Advance Residential Technologies) Division for equipment that can deliver all the bells and whistles – literally. According to Trevor Siepman, ART’s Department Manager, they worked to prepare 130 Lake Bend for full home automation. “We put in a control processor when the house was under construction. This is the brains of home automation and allows owners to add systems as they need them,” he says. “There is so much that is possible, we wanted to leave this to the purchaser to decide.”

At present, the home is ready with a security setup that features three cameras that are remotely accessible. In the past we wired everything and had to hide all the connections. hose who thought Mercedes Benz Winnipeg could not get any better are in for a surprise. This coming spring, the dealership will open its new stateof-the-art facility that will blow the doors off anything currently available in the local luxury car market. The new 3.28-acre location at 24 Rothwell Road off Kenaston in the south end of the city will offer more than 55,000 square feet of modern architecture that will house more models and offer more service. “This will be a new flagship store for Canada,” says General Sales Manager Mark Kelly. He reports that inside customers will find much that is different. For starters the décor will sport a new black signature colour key that will extend throughout a facility that is screamingly modern and energy efficient – just like the cars on show. On the ground level 17,000 sq. ft. will provide display room for 18 to 20 new models, including an AMG Performance area. “In the lower level we will have 18,000 sq. ft of additional showroom space for Certified Pre-Owned cars, making us the true one-stop shop for all things Mercedes here in Manitoba,” he says, commenting that Mercedes Benz Winnipeg is yet again the winner of the highly prestigious Star Dealer Award (2015) for service excellence.

There is more. According to Kelly, sales of Mercedes Benz products have been remarkable. In fact, the new GLK and ML series are among the top sellers in luxury class SUV’s. He reports that the dealership has seen one record breaking sales month after another, thanks to the line where drivers can now get into a new Benz for around $34,000. “With more customers, we have ramped up our service offering to make sure that the quality of the Mercedes experience is maintained. To do this we have greatly enlarged the service area to 16,000 sq. ft.,” says Kelly, noting that the area will feature 16 state-of-the-art work bays, including four bays dedicated to the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter vans, as well as an additional three-bay detail centre. In addition, the plans call for a six-vehicle customer drivethru reception area to more efficiently serve the needs of after-sales customers. “We are also increasing the size of our team by 20 percent. This means more support and service personnel, as well as more sales people to make the total experience as effortless and well considered as possible. We want to continue to be a place that is about more than just quality cars. As our 2015 Star Dealer Award shows, Mercedes Benz Winnipeg is about a total package that seeks to takes things to a higher level for our customers.”

While the old location at Portage and Moray has been a modern and comfortable location over the past 14 years, the new site will simply offer more. There will be more cars under the roof, an aspect that means more comfortable shopping. Service customers will find more ways to relax with an even better appointed lounge area with full Internet connectivity and productivity tools. “The location itself will be beneficial to our customers of which the majority live in the south end of the city. The site, just across from Tuxedo Business Park on Kenaston, will also make morning drop-offs to our service department or a quick visit to the dealership much easier for many, many people,” says Kelly, suggesting that those who thought the dealership was the best it could possibly be should think again. WHEN IT COMES TO INVESTMENTS, WHAT YOU DON’T KNOW CAN HURT YOU! In 2011, Morningstar Inc. published a report detailing that Canada has, on average, the highest mutual fund fees in the world. In fact, Morningstar gave Canada’s mutual fund industry an F grade in their global ranking for having the highest fees among the 22 countries surveyed in their report. Morningstar reported that Canadian mutual funds routinely charge management expense ratios (MERs) between 2% to 3%. Canada was the only country to receive an F grade. As Rob Carrick, writer for the Globe and Mail, stated in his article of August 22, 2013 entitled Don’t let investment fees ruin your retirement, “The killer argument for paying attention to investing fees: They could mean the difference between having enough for retirement and running out of money.” In 1998, Jonathan Chevreau wrote a book entitled The Wealthy Boomer: Life After Mutual Funds, in which former Mercer actuary Malcolm Hamilton wrote the following in the forward of the book: “American investors can find no-load mutual funds with MERs under 0.25%. Canadian investors can’t. For this, Canadians have only themselves to blame. We aren’t price sensitive. We either don’t know what we’re paying, or we don’t care. If the customer doesn’t care what the product costs, the producer has no reason to economize. High MERs mean better incomes for investment managers. They mean bigger profits for the fund companies. They mean larger trailer fees for brokers. They mean fat advertising budgets. In the long run, everyone is happy - except the customer. Until investors demand a better product by rewarding those who provide it and punish those who don’t, Canadian mutual funds will have high MERs. And as long as MERs stay high, using mutual funds intelligently means using them less.” Although information concerning the affect that fees can ultimately have on an investor’s net returns over time and on their retirement income is readily available on the Internet and from other sources, Canadian investors are slow to change to more cost effective alternative investment solutions. Why might you ask? There currently exists a huge Information Gap in the Financial Services industry. As Robert Mysicka noted in his report for the C. D. Howe Institute Who Watches the Watchmen? – The Role of the Self-Regulator: “Professionals with specialized knowledge have an interest in maintaining or even perpetuating the information imbalance that exists between them and the consumers that they serve. The reason for this is simple: most professionals earn their living by selling some variety of ‘information products.’ These products are governed by the harsh realities of information commodity markets, as explained by Google’s chief economist Hal Varian: In a free

market, once several companies have sunk the costs necessary to create an undifferentiated product, competitive forces will usually move the product’s price toward its marginal cost – the cost of manufacturing an additional copy. And because the marginal cost of reproducing information tends to be very low, the price of an information product, if left to the market place, will tend to be low as well. What makes information products economically attractive – their low reproduction cost – also makes them economically dangerous. (Varian 2000, page 134) We have all heard the saying that talk is cheap. In the world of professional advisory services, at least, advice can be even cheaper, especially if the same knowledge benefits a large number of people. As Varian notes, the attractiveness of information products for consumers also makes them dangerous to professionals, whose earnings potential depends on their ability to bridge an information gap. As the information gap shrinks or is closed entirely, professionals’ earnings potential declines. Therefore, while many professionals have a duty (whether legal or moral) to educate the public and to promote better understanding of issues within the scope of their expertise, professionals always have an incentive to maintain, or in some cases, even to perpetuate information gaps between themselves and their clients.” There’s a distinct advantage to keeping investment costs low: All else being equal, lower-cost investments provide greater net returns than higher-cost investments. This advantage becomes more pronounced over time.

Flavourful cuisine with flair With its white stucco walls, white table linens, sparkling glasses and discrete lighting, The Mitchell Block in Winnipeg’s Exchange District gives the promise of something to be savoured. Ushered promptly to a table, we are immediately offered herby moist focaccia bread to be lathered with sundried tomato butter and splashed with balsamic. See what we mean? Indeed, the main attraction of The Mitchell Block is nothing but chef/owner Sean McKay’s artful and flavourful cuisine. Bevies included! Brilliantly boozy signature drinks bowl us over. “Prairie Penicillin” is precisely what the doctor ordered - an invigorating honey-lemon blend of whiskey and ginger liqueur. And “Vieux Carre” is a monkish throwback of bourbon, cognac and vermouth mixed with herbal liqueur and bitters. Think Jaggermiester, only quenching! To pair? Bison Carpaccio: one of the most creative starter plates we’ve tried in awhile. Thin tenderized bison is elaborately garnished with tangy capers and shavings of preserved sunny egg yolk and Parmigiano. But the crackers steal the show. Snap crackle popping like Rice Krispies, the server explains that the crowning puffed crackers are flash fried micro-thin slices of beef. Amazing! A small mixed salad adds the necessary green and crunch, harmonizing apple, celery, hemp seeds, candied walnuts and cranberry. For mains, McKay’s pastas get rave reviews, and a bowl of fresh fettuccine is no exception, tangling up spicy dense chorizo and plump prawns with peppers and roasted corn in a creamy saffron sauce. Gourmet home-style cooking then gets plated thanks to Manitoba Chicken Breast on gravy-drenched mash. This traditional meat and potato dish gets a complex accent with fig, chèvre cheese, beet and leafy kale. The Mitchell Block has an excellent wine list with something for everyone: Beringer’s Californian Zinfandel rosé is a happy swirl of strawberry and rhubarb. And crimson Yalumba Y Series Shiraz Viognier strikes with dark cherry and spiced cake. On a roll - time for dessert. Dark Chocolate Cake and Crème Brûlé are big favourites here, but we just can’t say no to New York Cheese Cake, especially Mitchell Block’s unique interpretation. Typical crust gets nixed for a mason jar filled with the heavenly creamy cake. Toppings of lemon curd, almond and spongy meringue makes for a mmmm-mellow finish. Remember to head upstairs to The Mitchell Block lounge for late night bites, sips and stellar downtown view.

Savoury Swiss Cheese and Spinach Bake

1 bunch (8 oz/250 g) fresh spinach, stems trimmed 1 small onion, finely chopped ¼ cup (50 mL) red pepper, finely chopped 3 tbsp (45 mL) fresh basil, chopped 1 cup (250 mL) Swiss cheese, grated 5 eggs 1/3 cup (75 mL) plain yogurt ¼ tsp (1 mL) red pepper flakes ¾ cup (175 mL) all-purpose flour 2 tsp (10 mL) baking powder ½ tsp (2 mL) dry mustard ½ tsp (2 mL) salt ½ tsp (2 mL) pepper ¼ cup (50 mL) Panko crumbs 2 tbsp (25 mL) Parmesan cheese 1 tbsp (15 mL) melted butter Blanch spinach. Cool and squeeze out excess moisture. Place in medium bowl. Add onion, red pepper, basil and Swiss cheese. In a large bowl, beat eggs until foamy. Beat in yogurt and red pepper flakes. In a separate medium bowl, combine flour, baking powder, mustard, salt and pepper. Mix into the egg mixture just until combined. Stir in spinach mixture. Pour mixture into a well greased 9 inch (23 cm) pie plate. Combine crumbs, Parmesan cheese and melted butter. Mix well. Sprinkle over egg mixture. Bake at 350°F (180°C) for about 30 minutes or until golden brown and firm. Cut into wedges and serve warm. Makes 6-8 servings Bake can be made using individual pie plates. Adjust cooking time accordingly

Individual Raspberry Meringue Trifles Meringue 4 egg whites ¼ tsp (1 mL) cream of tartar 1 cup (250 mL) sugar ½ tsp (2 mL) vanilla extract Custard 1 cup (250 mL) sugar ¼ cup (50 mL) all-purpose flour Dash salt 3 cups (750 mL) 2% milk 4 egg yolks 1-2 tsp (5-10 mL) raspberry or vanilla extract 1 ½-2 cups (375-500 mL) fresh raspberries Topping 2 cups whipped cream Chocolate garnish (optional) Mint leaves

In a large bowl, beat egg whites and cream of tartar until soft peaks form. Gradually add sugar. Continue beating until stiff, glossy peaks form. Beat in vanilla. Spoon mixture onto foil-lined baking sheet. Spread evenly over pan. Bake at 250°F (120°C) for 2 hours. Remove from oven and let cool. In a medium sized saucepan, combine sugar, flour and salt. Add milk and egg yolks and whisk to combine. Place over medium heat, stirring constantly until mixture comes to a boil and thickens. Remove from heat. Stir in raspberry or vanilla extract. Cover top with plastic wrap. Cool in refrigerator.

Break meringue into small pieces, about ½ inches (1.5 cm) in size. Spoon 2 tbsp (25 mL) of custard into each dessert cup or glass. Sprinkle each with some of the meringue pieces, followed by some fresh raspberries. Repeat layers. Top each dessert with whipped cream, raspberries and a mint leaf. Wild Blueberry Pan Sauce ¾ cup / 175 mL dry red wine 1 cup / 250 mL frozen wild blueberries 1 Tbsp / 15 mL sugar 1 tsp / 5 mL grated lemon rind 1 ½ tsp / 7 mL cornstarch combined with 2 Tbsp / 30 mL water

Pork Medallions with Wild Blueberry Pan Sauce

Cut tenderloin into six equal pieces. With cut side down, pound gently to an even thickness, about ½-inch. Pat medallions dry with paper towels; season with thyme, salt and pepper. Heat oil in skillet over medium-high heat. Brown medallions, about 2 minutes per side. Transfer medallions to a rack on a rimmed baking tray in a 200ºF (93ºC) oven to keep warm while making the pan sauce.

Wild Blueberry Pan Sauce Drain any fat from skillet. Pour in wine; bring to a boil over high heat, stirring to scrape up any brown bits from the bottom of the pan. Reduce heat to medium; boil an additional 3 minutes. Stir in blueberries, sugar and lemon rind; return to a boil. Stir cornstarch mixture into sauce and simmer just until clear. Pool sauce onto warm dinner plates. Top with medallions. Serves 4

Searing the medallions locks in moisture and adds flavour. The secret to not overcooking the medallions is to remove them from the skillet while they still have a rosy centre.

Pairing suggestion: Pairs well with a medium to full-bodied red wine such as a Californian Zinfandel or an Australian Shiraz.

A teenaged girl dies and suspicion falls on Dwayne Strickland, an ex-con with a shady past, someone who never quite fit in this clannish, close-knit small town. But then, neither does Tony Breau, a retired prison guard who came home to retire and renew his acquaintanceship with Caddy, his first love, who just happens to have raised the dead girl as her own. STEREO Reviewed by Randal McIlroy Pink Floyd The Endless River (Sony) It is what it isn’t – neither a new Pink Floyd album nor a lost one, but reclamation of unused music, mostly from sessions in 1993 for The Division Bell, woven into a 53-minute instrumental suite that saves its sole song until the end. David Gilmour and drummer Nick Mason see The Endless River as farewell to their late keyboard player, Richard Wright, but it’s easier to hear this as a balm for longtime, headphone-wrapped listeners who remember ample space and suggestion in the music before the lyrics intruded. It’s the minted sound, with stately rhythms and rich, buoyant keyboard playing lifting Gilmour’s keening guitar solos. It’s narcotic, too, and even those fans in the headphones may grow restless waiting for something to happen, but deft mixing introduces healthy interruptions – Wright’s beautiful turn at a pipe organ, Mason’s excited percussion flurry. Tunes? “Anisina,” guided warmly by Gilmour on piano and welcoming a saxophone, is a theme waiting for a movie. The closing song, “Louder than Words,” with female backing singers, could have been a legendary excision from The Dark Side of the Moon. Like the studio footage and extra tracks on the DVD with a deluxe version, however, The Endless River is taken best as a bonus coda.

Erasure The Violet Flame (Deluxe Version) (Mute) After recent forays assigning their pop drama to acoustic instruments, Erasure sounds happy reconnected to familiar programming. A wise move, that. Their love songs are swooning, scolding or guilty, but singer Andy Bell stakes his life to them, while Vince Clarke sets the machines to urgent. “Sacred,” with its trumpeted emotion and “Reason,” modulated with softer keyboards compare well to the favourites cut live for the deluxe version’s second disc – pop music at once earthbound and heavenly. Why TV’s current generation of singing hopefuls doesn’t ransack the Clarke/Bell catalogue is a mystery.

The Incredible String Band U (BGO) Long before world music, The Incredible String Band’s Robin Williamson and Mike Heron created their own worlds, with an uncommon armoury of Indian and Middle Eastern instruments tuned to the Scots’ singular poetry. Recorded in 1970, U capped four years of golden (and sometimes gaudy) invention, with close to two hours of music composed for a stage show – this welcome reissue explains all in the expanded notes – and while familiarity with the fast-forward button may be a comfort for initiates, the high points astonish. The unbounded Williamson anticipates Celtic mysticism by decades with the deep echoes of “Invocation” and “Time,” and “Puppet Song” summarizes the show’s theme of the human journey in admirably light form, with snappy guitar. Heron is by now the more earthbound of the two, trusting to piano and electric guitar; “Walking Along with You” celebrates a rare, husky vocal from bassist Rose Simpson, and “Bridge Song” and the 15-minute closer, “Rainbow,” draw the most from all four singers, including soprano Licorice McKechnie.

A Man, A Boat & the Baltic Sea By Quentin Mills-Fenn Kelly Gray has spent decades editing and writing for all manner of magazines (including this one), but this time he has his own story to tell. Style Manitoba caught up with Kelly on a busy weekend at The Forks Market, as he sat at a kiosk and chatted to people about his new book, The Less You Know: The Wolseley Voyager.

“I have sailing and canoeing and kayaking experience, but I had no motor boat experience,” Gray enthusiastically confessed to total strangers. “So I went to The Netherlands, bought a boat for a few thousand dollars, and set off for the Baltic Sea.” He explained to Style why he wanted to cruise the rivers and canals of Europe, despite lacking the necessary knowledge, expertise, and maybe good sense. “I was looking for a way to change things up,” he says. “Something new, something that required learning. Part of the idea behind the whole project was to leave myself open to opportunity. There are always a million reasons not to do something. I wanted to do something completely different.” That brought him to the picturesque town of Delft, where he lodged at the old gaol-house, spending days talking with canal dwellers and checking out boat prospects. Then Djes came into his life, all steel-hulled, 4 1/2 tons of her. A boat with no electricity, no heat, and no water - it was just what Gray needed. “Djes was built in the 1960s as a service boat, to service small fishing boats in The Netherlands,” he says. “The guy who owned it and loved it passed away and left it in the dock with all his stuff in it. They were going to strip it for parts - the engine, everything,” says Gray. “I was supposed to get papers but that wasn’t my style. I was living in the old gaol in Delft and I wanted to get out of jail and on the boat,” he adds. “It had no reverse and it crabbed off to the left but away I went,” he says with a smile. “I thought if it breaks down, I’m going to discover what needs to be done. Whatever transpired, I would find a solution for it.” That was Gray’s mantra for the voyage, and the source of his title: the less you know at the beginning, the more you learn as you go along. The Less You Know is the story of that trip, a tale of solitude, solace, and mechanical misadventures. Gray sets off, seeing the sights and making friends, or at least puzzling and irritating the authorities. “I would get out early in the morning and wander these small towns before dawn with my camera. I was surrounded by natural and manmade beauty,” he says. “The Mosul River is remarkable,” he adds as an example. “So beautiful, so clear. The salmon have come back. Children swim in the river. It’s a wonderland. Vineyards coming down to the water, castles above.” Did he succeed? Did Djes take Kelly Gray to the Baltic? Or might a hole in the hull threaten the whole adventure? Let’s just say the Wolseley Voyager has plans for another book or two...

ith two young children to look after, Ted and Tracy Simmons already have a busy family life. Yet, their extended business family is growing larger every day. The Simmons couldn’t be happier. And their clients are too. The Simmons have recently settled back in their home province to raise their kids, and to open a unique massage clinic that is garnering – quite literally – rave reviews. Through the membership model, Rave Massage clients have the option to receive a $20 discount on their massage if they commit to booking a one-hour massage once a month. So far, 500 clients have made this monthly commitment to their health and wellbeing. The Simmons aren’t surprised at the great response to date. “Membership massage clinics are really popular in the U.S. and out east, in places like Toronto,” says Tracy. She notes that the low member rate can be extended to family members in the same household. Unused massages can be rolled over for use in the next month so there are no concerns about missing a treatment. Over and above the financial incentives and health benefits of regular massage gained through membership are perks like the free aromatherapy that comes with each treatment. Concordia Health & Fitness Centre At more than 90,000 square feet, the soon-to-be-built Concordia Health & Fitness Centre is a big deal that will help deliver on the promise of better health to thousands of people who live in Winnipeg’s north east quadrant and in nearby outlying communities. A joint venture of the developer Concordia Wellness Projects Inc., a non-profit registered charitable organization, as well as the Concordia Foundation and Concordia Hospital, the $45 million project could see completion in 2017. What’s on offer is a three-storey light-filled facility featuring therapy and fitness pools and a glass-surround second floor activity area with running track, a double gym, and specialized fitness areas. The new facility will be located on a site just east of the hospital on the north side of Concordia Avenue at Lagimodiere Boulevard, adjacent to both the Concordia Hip & Knee Institute and Concordia Village.

LM reports they have been working closely over the last five years with Concordia Wellness Projects Inc. on the development that will include a 200-meter indoor running track, large double gymnasium, weight and cardio training space, group fitness studios and a fitness / therapy pool area. Complementing the active program, educational and clinical space will provide a range of wellness services that builds upon the growing ‘Concordia Campus’ model and its holistic approach to delivering health services to Manitobans. Mr. David Olfert, Chair of the Concordia Wellness Projects Inc. Board of Directors,

says, “This is an exciting and actively visible way that we can create a Centre of Excellence for healthier living for the people of our community.” The project is the largest fundraising endeavour in the Concordia Foundation’s history. Indeed, the effort will surpass the $10 million the group raised over a four-year period to complete the Concordia Hip & Knee Institute. Reports suggest a fundraising effort will seek a $15 million buy-in from the general public in the form of donations that will add to the funds being sought from the Federal and Provincial governments. A Place to Grow B y K elly G ray Many of us have concerns about our aging relatives. And with more senior Canadians than ever, this concern is a growing fact of life that requires a thoughtful approach. Enter All Seniors Care Living Centres, an organization that offers seven residences in Manitoba where they combine the need for quality lifestyle with the necessary supports to help seniors throughout their senior years. The principal idea at All Seniors Care is to allow every senior to comfortably age in place. “No one likes to move, so we have programs to provide the right residences when people need them, and we do it in a way that meets our residents’ high standards for lifestyle,” says Tricia Charles, Vice-President of Operations, Manitoba, All Seniors Care Living Centres Ltd. Here, she points to Shaftesbury Park Retirement Residence, a 188-suite assisted living facility in the heart of Tuxedo. At Shaftesbury Park, there are two styles of care – one for more independent seniors, and The Boulevard, a section for up to 38 residents who may have symptoms of dementia or other disorders that require a bit more specialized attention. “Our Boulevard section is really luxury secured living,” she says, noting that they utilize a custom approach to each resident where things such as likes and dislikes as well as physical limitations are assessed and then written into a comprehensive personalized overall plan known as a Quality of Life Assessment or QOLA. “There is a lot of communication with family on these matters that can be quite fluid. We stay

on top of concerns by getting to really know our residents as well as their families.” She reports that residents of The Boulevard have the benefit of round the clock health care staff where residents are looked after in their own amenity-rich suites. “Certainly one thing that distinguishes us is the fact that we have a Registered Nurse on staff complimented by our Health Care Aides.” The Boulevard section is secured for safety. Suites themselves offer a variety of enhanced features that allow for 24-hour monitoring of residents where health challenges demand a higher level of vigilance. Alongside aides or with friends or family or even on an independent basis, residents of The Boulevard are still able to access the full facility. This means it’s a simple matter to drop in to the dining room for nutrition-minded menus prepared by the site’s Red Seal Chef or participate in some of the numerous social activities. “We understand that people are all different and part of our approach is to allow independence with supports. The idea is to enhance quality of life at every point. For example, The Boulevard residents receive daily exercise classes and many participate in therapeutic group activities,” explains Charles. A very important benefit of Shaftesbury Park is that couples no longer have to split up because

of age related health decline. Here, residents may live together in one of the assisted living suites till such time that more support may be required and one of the pair is moved over to The Boulevard section. “Couples can still be together, but in a safer more secure setting where our staff can ensure the highest level of comfort,” she notes. For those not requiring the level of care found on The Boulevard side of the assisted living program at Shaftesbury Park, the luxury lifestyle attributes are no less thoughtful. For instance, residents have a choice of well-appointed one and two-bedroom suites that come with kitchenettes, in-suite climate control, balconies or patios and large contemporary bathrooms. The common areas are located throughout the building in a design that is tailored to community. There is even a nondenominational chapel. And when residents have guests from out of town, there is a hospitality suite available to make their stay as comfortable as possible. “We also have a lovely tranquil library complete with fireplace, an Internet lounge as well as our Bistro Coffee Lounge, and there is even a movie theatre,” says the Director of Health and Wellness, mentioning a wealth of services, including health inspired dining room menus that offer real choice, dry cleaning pickup, an in-building Tuck Shop, weekly housekeeping, a billiards /games room and the shuttle bus. “At Shaftesbury Park Retirement Residence, our mindset is first and foremost about creating a caring community that seeks to simplify and take a lot of the bumps out of the road for seniors who want to live life on their terms.“

Seniors in southern Manitoba have an opportunity to have it all with Homestead South, a 55 + assisted living facility in Morden that really takes the bumps out of the road. “At Homestead South, residents make all the choices and we do all the work,” says Betty Froese, Manager of the 81-suite residence. She points out that at Homestead South, it’s all about being able to relax and make the most of life in a comfortable environment surrounded by friends and community. What’s on offer is a four-storey facility that features one and two bedroom fully equipped suites in four formats in a setting that makes life easy. The welldesigned facility completes the package with a private dining room for special occasions, and two guest suites to accommodate visiting family. “The atmosphere is amazing and residents are overwhelmingly positive about the experience,” she says, noting that residents have told her that Homestead South is the place to be with a basic monthly rent that takes care of everything from cooking to cleaning. “This is a very straight forward monthly fee structure that includes meals, housekeeping and activities. You can forget the snow shovel or lawnmower. We do it all.”

, the cottage. That wonderful sanctuary unto which we escape for rest and recuperation. That place where clocks run slow and wine runs, well, faster. And that’s just how we like it: Cab Sauv, if you don’t mind, preferably new world Argentinian.

In our world, with a schedule that propels us between Canada, Britain and, most recently Australia as design experts on lifestyle show The Living Room, we’re always searching for somewhere to catch our breath. That said, we love our job, so you’ll hear no grumbling from us.

Yes indeed, we’re happy with our professional mission: to make ordinary homes extraordinary for style challenged homeowners across three continents. Two years past, however, we met the trickiest clients we’ve ever worked with: ourselves. Having purchased a rundown cottage in Muskoka, the race was on to transform it into a chic bolt hole before our nerves – and our budget - got the better of us. To compound matters, we’d been invited to film the transformation for the Cottage Life television network. And they’d suggested a three month deadline..

The rough-hewn wooden table conjures the spirit of Restoration Hardware, one of our favourite retail destinations. Mixing leather and black wooden chairs elicits the perfect dining scene. A faux antler chandelier, floating above, provides dimmable illumination at the twist of a button. 56 | STYLE MANITOBA | Spring 2015

In the master bedroom (the result of combining two smaller rooms) we created a relaxed atmosphere with a creamy painted scheme to ‘minimize’ the overpowering v groove pine. Benjamin Moore Revere Pewter was our weapon of choice, and paired as it is against the joists (which we left unpainted) the resultant aesthetics are dramatic yet soothing. For the most part pattern was limited, though we conceded a spot of Robert Allen Ikat fabric for drapery (and toss pillows) and geometric weave rugs from the C+J Home collection (find our line in stores like Homesense, Winners and Marshalls). A large custom headboard stretches along one elevation, its soft nickel pins visually balanced by pale lumber nightstands and dressers. Opposite the bed sit two comfy chaise lounges, which we found in Ikea. (Our schemes are peppered with affordable detailing that helps moderate spending. It’s just how we roll…) In the basement, after ‘opening’ the space to make it eminently more livable, we created a large double bedroom and comfy family room, each clad in pine and connected via a large barn door, which slides along a slick black rail. Grey painted cabinetry sets a dramatic tone. Appliances are concealed behind cabinet doors so as not to disturb clean lines.

Yes: three months. To rebuild a collapsing sunroom, refurbish a basement bedroom, tackle a large family room, install a new kitchen, create two new bathrooms and knock together two small bedrooms to create one killer master suite. Aye, it’s fair to say we had our work cut out. The kitchen, updated by Batemans in Oro Medonte, is a hand built triumph finished in rich grey with Caesarstone detailing and nickel lighting. Slick Euro styling is important to us, so we discreetly concealed fridge and freezer separates behind doors: yup, the former in the left tall tower and the latter in the right, effectively sandwiching the built-in stove and cooker.

chandelier floats proudly above providing atmosphere and adjustable illumination at the twist of a button. Upstairs, in the house bathroom, we replaced dated tile with acres of slick Caesarstone wrapped across main wall areas and around a deep soaker tub. Above this, a rain head shower cascades high-pressure jets while fixed glazing protects the room from water splash.

The focal point in the family room is the oil burning stove which sits in front of a granite clad feature zone, while the focal point in the bedroom is the large padded headboard, custom made for the project. Both rooms feature double French doors, dressed with grey plaid drapery that lead to a large sunroom rebuilt in the footprint of its near derelict predecessor. The rebirthed sunroom boasts Weather Master Plus windows with plastic memory glass that’s virtually impervious to scratches or indeed breakage, and bug screens to protect against entomological invasion. Dressed with weatherproof wicker and embellished with Robert Allen toss pillows, the sunroom is a climatic joy (even in cooler climes) thanks to the memory glass which helps insulate proceedings.

Reworking the entire ground floor, to be honest, was simple, being that the biggest job (short of inserting triple French doors to afford better lake sightlines) was removing threadbare carpet and installing a slick wooden floor. Dressed with an outsized sofa and a leather ottoman, the scene is anchored by a large grey rug that seems to float, like an island, in front of the stone built fireplace. To the other side of the room, modern black Windsor and grey leather chairs gather around an outsized wooden table while a faux antler

And finally: the downstairs bathroom. Accessed by another rolling barn door, its primary aesthetic is grey scale via ‘cement’ toned tile and graphite grout which enlivens basic buy subway tile . To add flair, we custom manufactured the outsized trough sink in conjunction with Dare To Be Different, a vibrant young company whose products can be sized to suit your application. The results, we hope, speak for themselves. Looking back, it’s hard to believe we made the changes described in just three short months. Sure, we have a brilliant team, but it was a monolithic transformation nonetheless, given the window of opportunity. As each other’s fussiest clients, we drove one another crazy: on a daily basis, it should be reported, we’d hone ambition… and then start from scratch. To say we were pedantic with each other – and our team, for that matter

– is an understatement. At all times, however, we had the best interests of the cottage close to our hearts. So would we do it again? In another cottage? Could we actually deal with our ‘most demanding’ clients ever…. in a second location? Well, as a matter of fact, yes. We could. During Season TWO of ‘Colin and Justin’s Cabin Pressure,’ which starts this Spring (March 2015). And this time the drama is even bigger and the makeover even more astonishing.

The Neighbourhoods of Bridgwater in southwest Winnipeg are as unique in their settings as they are similar in their purpose. While forests, sparkling lakes and winding trails give each neighbourhood a distinct look, all have the same objective: to embrace nature. Spread out over 125 acres of open space, the Bridgwater development consists of four neighbourhoods – Bridgwater Forest, Bridgwater Lakes, Bridgwater Trails and Bridgwater Centre – all interconnected by a network of pathways and sidewalks.

Featuring homes that showcase innovative architecture and traditional styles, the Bridgwater development continues to lead the city in new home construction for the fifth consecutive year. Bridgwater Forest was the first and is the most established of the Bridgwater neighbourhoods. “The homes in Bridgwater Forest are interspersed throughout 25 acres of mature forest, so there is definitely an established feel to the neighbourhood,” says Dwayne Rewniak, Acting Executive Director, Housing Delivery/Land Development, Manitoba Housing. “We tried to maintain and preserve the forest as much as possible and incorporate it into the development,” Rewniak states, adding that a vast network of walkways encourage strolls through the forest. “Envisioning this neighbourhood, we wanted to create an environment where residents can walk, cycle and enjoy nature,” he says. Started in 2007, Bridgwater Forest is now over 90 percent complete, with 1,300 occupied homes – 1,000 single-family homes and 300 multi-family units, which consist of apartments and townhomes. Less than 100 homes remain available for occupancy.

“The majority of our showhomes are in Bridgwater Lakes right now,” he says, “and all of them are featured in the Parade of Homes. So anyone who wants to see the range of homes in this neighbourhood just has to go to the Parade of Homes to check them out.” The newest residential neighbourhood Bridgwater Trails - will offer the largest number of single-family homes and multi-family units In the Bridgwater neighbourhood, with plans calling for 1,040 single-family and over 1,000 multi-family units. Construction of 60 single-family homes started in 2014, and they are scheduled for completion in 2015. “Our first Bridgwater Trails homeowner will be moving in this year,” Rewniak says, adding the first new Bridgwater Trail showhomes will open this fall.

Plans for Bridgwater Trails also include two new pedestrian bridges and a fountain. Progress continues at Bridgwater Centre, the retail and commercial hub of the Bridgwater development. Bridgewater Centre is designed to provide convenient access to shops and services, making the town centre a meeting place where residents can get together and visit over coffee, Rewniak suggests. Red River Co-op, the first commercial venture at Bridgwater Centre, is scheduled to open a gas bar and car wash this spring; and Hilton Homes has started to construct single-attached townhomes, Rewniak explains, adding the long range plan is for 1,000 multi-family units at Bridgwater Centre. “We’re seeing activity on both the commercial and residential front, and that’s exciting,” he

says. “Our intention has always been to start off gradually, and balance the commercial with the residential development.” Future plans for commercial services include a grocer, pharmacy, bank and cafés. Rewniak expects to be in a position to elaborate on those ventures fairly soon. Like the town centre, the Neighbourhoods of Bridgwater will continue to evolve, he says. Plans include expansion of the trail systems and more pathways. When complete, 80 kilometres of walkways will connect all neighbourhoods. “We will be expanding the amenities that are currently available in Bridgwater Forest and Bridgwater Lakes into the newer neighbourhoods,” he points out, adding each neighbourhood will have access to pedestrian pathways that converge at town centre - the heart of the Bridgwater development.

Design & Detail Whether you have two legs or four, the fetching design of Southwynn Homes’ 41 Deer Pointe Drive, which is replete with innovative detailing, is a prime example of the custom homebuilder’s ability to create exactly what clients want. The owners of the pre-build home are dog lovers, and as such, worked with Southwynn to create elements that fit for them and their furry friends. The five-inch plank laminate flooring is scratch proof, while the dedicated doggie area / mudroom features a vacuum outlet for quick cleanup and a dog shower. And finally, a stylish front courtyard was created as a dog run. Not all the details are for the dogs though. The foyer boasts innovative styling where lofts were constructed between the trusses giving the ceiling depth and contrast - a first for this homebuilder. Branching Out Beyond While you can still see some of Discovery Homes’ great houses within city limits, you can now move beyond the Perimeter if you’re looking for their custom designed homes. Recently the company began extending their building offerings to clients who own their own lots. They got their first taste of country building in La Salle with homes in Kingswood South and Prairie View Lakes, which is where one of the company’s showhomes for the Spring Parade of Homes is located. The large bungalow at 44 Fourth Avenue is one of Discovery’s standard models, and offers a traditional, family-friendly design. “Sales expectations have been continually exceeded, thanks to the demand, the location and the ability of our homebuilders to create a wide variety of wonderful home plans,” says David Borger, Vice President of Land Development with Ladco, the company behind this multi-phase community found between Waverley Street and Kenaston Blvd near the University of Manitoba in the city’s burgeoning south end. South Pointe’s initial phase of some 1,400 lots was started several years back and is now a maturing community filled with model homes, tree lined streets and parklands. “ It has been the full slate of attributes that have attracted residents who are from a wide range of ages,

ethnic mixes and occupations. This has created a fully blended community,” says Borger, pointing out that their plans are to continue this winning formula as they ready the heavy equipment and trades for Phase II.

An important attribute to the neighbourhood will be the new school planned for next year. According to Pembina Trails School Division, the Kindergarten to Grade 8 facility will service up to 800 students and offer 74 preschool spaces in a building that is expected to be almost 8000 sq. meters. As yet unnamed, a call for tenders for the new centre located on an 8.8-acre site at Tim Sale Drive and Waverley St. was released this past October. Inside, families can expect to find facilities for special needs, resource centre and library, music room, Phys Ed and health facility, an outdoor learning area as well as a practical arts

The perception of space can be highly affected by something as simple as light. Maric Homes’ 100 Lake Bend in Bridgwater Lakes sought to experiment with the interaction of those two elements, and how it can alter design and experience.

Up that glass staircase you’ll find the master bedroom - a private oasis separated from the

Rather than keeping the staircase as strictly utilitarian, Maric made it the centerpiece of the home, adjacent to the kitchen where most of the traditional family’s traffic is. Every room needs that one anchor piece from which all other décor is set around or inspired by. Sectionals are quickly becoming that focal point for living rooms, sitting areas and basements, thanks to their versatility in both structure and style. “The great thing about sectionals is that many styles are modular, and you can build them to the size you want,” explains Leilei Li, category manager for Dufresne. “If you have a big home with a large open space, sectionals create a nice frame or break in the room by cornering off that area.” The spacious seating arrangement also offers families ample room to snuggle together in one space, or the perfect setting for multiple guests. People have always looked to Europe for design inspiration whether it be fashion, or in this case, furniture. Crafted in Italy, the Versilia collection from Alf Italia is set in real Koto grey stained wood veneer with a high-gloss, UV finish. “The grain in this collection has a nice distinct look,” states Riccardo Mandarano of Contessa Home Decor / Contessa Fine Furniture. While the finish may be a bit different, he says the inlay is typical Italian. “Italians like to play with their wood grains. You’ll see the inlay will go one direction on the left side of the dresser, and then it will go the other way on the right,” explains Mandarano. “It gives it that extra detail.” The brushed chrome accents on the dresser, which carries into the legs on the chest and bed frame, offsets the high-gloss material for a contemporary look. Nightstands feature full extension drawers, which allows for complete access to the entire drawer for more usable space, and a seamless front finish. The fashionable bed frame can also be turned functional with add-on under bed storage, or ordered as a European bed system, which doesn’t require a box spring, just the mattress. Family-owned, Winnipeg-based Western Marble, Granite & Tile (WMGT) is the most technologically advanced granite, quartz and marble fabrication company in Western Canada. European Influence

It may not be in Paris or Prague, but the kitchen in Gino’s Homes latest showhome has its design roots in Europe. Alexander Scheiermann, the design and sales consultant with Kitchen Craft who oversaw the South Pointe project, explains he integrated the European ideals of clean, smooth, and simple into this large, bright North American kitchen. “You’re going to see European influence more and more in homes this year,” he states. “With that style you’ll see things like simple countertops, and floating or raised shelves. You see it a lot already with vanities where they are raised, or floating.” Here white floating shelves flank the large kitchen window, while the dark Thermofoil cabinets in the colour Ore add contrast in the big space. “The simple handles on the doors and fullextension, soft-close drawers also give some depth to the design,” notes Scheiermann. The focal point and epicentre of the kitchen is the 8.5-foot island, which features a full set of drawers on one side, while being completely open on the other. “The house features a glass staircase, so I wanted to reflect that in the island’s design. I wanted something that you could almost look through,” he explains. Kitchen Craft also took this European influence into the adjoining room with a custom built entertainment unit that features the same dark drawers and floating white shelves. Kitchen&Bath Set in Stone

Sometimes a client’s ideas are set in stone. The owners of this new home were asking for a lofty task; a seamless quartz counter for a large oddly shaped island. While a few other companies tried to pitch the pair on a two-piece counter, Dennis Konrad of Creative Granite Design Works was up for the challenge of providing a one-piece. The solution was finding a large enough piece of quartz to cut the entire template on. “We also had to make sure it still fit through the doorway,” laughs Konrad, adding they also provided matching quartz counters for under the kitchen’s cabinetry. In the last year, Konrad’s company has been installing more and more quartz versus granite in condos and homes. While both are highly durable surfaces, quartz is easier to match to décor because of its consistent colour, whereas granite, being a natural stone, has variation in colour and veining make each top unique. Granite is also a green product, making it an eco-friendly choice.
