On another note, many of our clients and associates have been inquiring about the wellbeing of Lisa Lester, our dear friend and valued team member at Style Manitoba. In early January, Lisa suffered a life threatening medical condition – a ruptured brain aneurysm – resulting in major surgery and weeks of hospitalization. Thanks to skilled neurosurgeon Dr Anthony Kaufman and a ‘side of miracle,’ Lisa has rallied round and a full recovery is expected. In addition to the potlights and other LED light products throughout the home, Robinson Lighting supplied the light fixture above the island. It helps create a subtle visual divide between the living room and kitchen spaces. A large dining room tucked next to the kitchen gets loads of natural light, thanks to the large set of triple pane windows that run across the rear of the home. From the dining room, the homeowners can access a 15’ X 8’ pressuretreated wood deck that affords a wonderful, private view of the landscaped lot. The builder chose a palette of light earth tones for the colour scheme to keep the overall effect warm, yet airy, says Thorsteinson, who adds that Friesen Floor & Decor installed the durable vinyl plank flooring throughout the main floor space. “It’s a very durable material that stands up well to high traffic areas, and especially great for people that have kids and pets.” The three bedrooms, on the other hand, are carpeted to provide texture, warmth and extra comfort underfoot. But the carpet transitions to a luxurious heated ceramic tile floor in the master bedroom’s ensuite. This is a calm oasis, replete with dual sinks and a ceramic tile shower with glass doors. The toilet is set off behind a partial wall for privacy. The master bedroom also sports a large walk-in closet and large windows. Since the room is built to the back of the house, it feels like a sanctuary.
Rounding out the main floor is a large bathroom, nicely located for both residents and guests, as well as a mud/laundry room. This space can be accessed from the garage and is concealed by a sliding barn door on the inside, which lends more utility to the room. Leading to a fully framed lower level is a wide staircase with glass panel inserts installed by Fort Rouge Glass into maple railings. This design helps keep the overall visual effect inside the home open and bright. “The lower level allows for another 1,023 square feet of living space, including a huge rec room, additional bedroom, full bathroom and plenty of storage for growing or multi-generational families, or for empty nesters who host out-oftown guests,” notes Thorsteinson. MUSIC Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra – The Classic A Series continues with Honens Competition-winner Luca Buratto, playing Prokofiev’s brilliant Piano Concerto No. 2 and Rachmaninoff ’s romantic Symphony No.2 in E minor (Apr 6 + 7). The Classic B Series joins up with the Winnipeg Philharmonic Choir playing Gabriel Fauré’s Requiem and Francis Poulenc’s Gloria. This pairing, along with Malcom Forsyth’s Three Métis Songs from Saskatchewan is performed at St. Boniface’s grand Cathedral-within-ruins, celebrating its 200th anniversary (Mar 23-25). Come hear Strauss: A Hero’s Life, noted as a ‘fabulous tone poem where every section of the orchestra works overtime.’ That’s not all, audience favourite Bomsori Kim will also be featured performing Shostakovich’s Violin Concerto No. 1 (May 11 + 12). The Air Canada Pops promises a special experience with the Pulitzer and Tony Prize winning musical A Chorus Line, presented by the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra and Rainbow Stage (Mar 16-18). Prepared to be bedazzled with a new show that features aerial flyers, acrobats, contortionists, dancers, jugglers, balancers, and strongmen sharing the stage with the WSO playing songs from your favourite movie soundtracks (Apr 27-29). The GreatWest Life Kids Concerts brings back Juno award-winner Al Simmons infamous for leading zany and energetic sing-a-longs while playing homemade instruments; he will attempt all this against the string, woodwind, brass, and percussion sections of the WSO. What fun! (Apr 8). Mark your calendars for BMO Night at the Movies featuring fantasy favourite The Wizard of Oz accompanied by the WSO performing the Harold Arlen score. Come dressed up as your favourite character! (Apr 21 + 22). Unless noted otherwise, concerts take place at the Centennial Concert Hall. Virtuosi Concerts – The Virtuosi season comes to a colourful close with the Chooi Brothers (violin) and Philip Chiu (piano) in an evening entitled Palette of Colours. The programme includes Moszkowski’s Suite in G minor for 2 violins and piano and Brahm’s Sonata No. 3 in D minor for violin and piano (Mar 17). All concerts take place at the Eckhardt-Gramatté Hall at The University of Winnipeg. Winnipeg Jazz Orchestra – Oscar Peterson, the renowned pianist and composer, makes his way to the ‘Peg bringing his “flawless technique, impeccable taste and hard driving swing.” Jazz lovers will be delighted by this Canadian superstar - a performance not to be missed! (Mar 25). Next up, award-winning pianist Mike Janzen returns to his home province to collaborate on some of the great music from the stage and screen for Broadway & Beyond (May 6). Events take place at the Winnipeg Art Gallery. Manitoba Chamber Orchestra – Tracy Dahl and Andriana Chuchman are both international opera stars with roots in Winnipeg. The MCO comes to a dazzling close with Measha Brueggergosman, one of Canada’s most celebrated soprano singers, who will perform Mahler’s Lieder eines Fahrenden Gessellen (Songs of a Travelling Journeyman) at this concert (May 24). All concerts take place at Westminster United Church. Westminster Concert Organ Series – The award-winning Rachel Mahon rounds out the WCO season. Come and witness the high calibre of Mahon’s organ playing that has won her numerous awards and competitions in Canada, including a graduating scholarship from the Faculty of Music, University of Toronto and the Godfrey Hewitt Memorial Scholarship from the Royal Canadian College of Organists (Apr 8). Concert takes place at Westminster United Church. Winnipeg Philharmonic Choir – In honour of the 200th Anniversary of the Archdiocese of St. Boniface, the WPC is once again partnering with the WSO. You will hear Gabriel Fauré’s Requiem and Francis Poulenc’s Gloria. This pairing, along with Malcom Forsyth’s Three Métis Songs from Saskatchewan, is performed in the beautiful and historic setting of the St Boniface Cathedral.
DANCE Royal Winnipeg Ballet – Carmina Burana is not only a reference to one of the most famous choral arrangements of the 20th century, it is also choreographer Mauricio Wainrot’s signature work that revitalizes traditional dances and
techniques in a daring new way. Also featured is George Balanchine’s Serenade, an iconic ballet set to Tchaikovsky’s “Serenade for Strings in C Major.” Ballet takes place at the Centennial Concert Hall (May 2-6). Spotlight is the culmination of 80 young artists who take what is for some their first step onto a professional stage. Come and witness the fruits of their labour, supporting them on their journey that may lead students to dance, choreograph or teach with established ballet companies throughout the world! Spotlight takes place at the Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre (May 24-26). Finally, On the Edge is a mixed programme of ballet classics and original choreography. Prepare to be transported on a journey to discover dance in its purest form. Performances take place at RWB Founder’s Studio, 380 Graham Ave (June 6-8). Winnipeg Contemporary Dancers – The World Premiere of Beyond is the result of WCD’s Artist-in-Residence Jason Martin (Montreal) and promises to be a production that “carries a voltage, a frenzy, a bestial and instinctive reality, exposing the destructive inhibitions and pressure we put on ourselves in order to define one’s identity and the selfacceptance that comes with it.” The full-evening work is cast on Winnipeg dancers Jasmine Allard, Alexandra Winters, Brianna Ferguson, Brett Owen, Allison Brooks and Charlie Prince (Montreal, Vancouver), and Janelle Hacault (Winnipeg, Montreal). All performances take place at the Rachel Browne Theatre (May 3-5). Young Lungs Dance Exchange – 2017/18 is all about research for this consortium of dance artists. Experience research in progress, in workshop form, in essay presentations or in roundtable conversations. The Research Series events are peppered throughout the season. GALLERIES + MUSEUMS Winnipeg Art Gallery – What’s on at the WAG? Plenty! Highlights of current and upcoming exhibitions include INSURGENCE/ RESURGENCE, an exhibition that brings together 29 emerging-to-established Indigenous artists who are pushing boundaries with their work. Curated by Jaimie Isaac and Julie Nagam (until Apr 22). Pitaloosie Saila has contributed to the Cape Dorset print collections for over 60 years, creating a prolific body of work: roughly 1,450 drawings and over 165 prints. A Personal Journey features 32 prints that center around themes of women and family, shamans, birds, and life experiences (until May 13). The National Gallery of Canada brings the work of David Altmejd to Winnipeg. The Vessel (2011) is a large scaled plexiglass sculpture that represents movement, transformation and the act of creation. The work brings together various materials, including plaster casts of the artist’s hands, which serve as the heads of graceful swans in flight. Montreal born Altmejd represented Canada at the Venice Biennale of Visual Art in 2007 and was the winner of the Sobey Art Award in 2009 (Nov 25-Apr 29). The WAG invites you to spend the summer with the Impressionists and experience 100 works spanning 100 years. Showcasing some of the most beloved artists of all time: Mary Cassatt, Paul Cézanne, Edgar Degas, Edouard Manet, Henri Matisse, Claude Monet, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, and many more! (June 16 – Sept 9). Plug In Institute of Contemporary Art – Skeena Reece: Sweetgrass and Honey is the solo exhibition of Skeena Reece, well known for her humorous and critically penetrating performances that manage to portray a range of personas with a direct and raw exchange with audiences. In this exhibition, she continues to build upon her cast of characters “ramping up the clichés and emboldening stereo-types while sincerely trying to unearth their origins and stonewall their continued perpetuation. From Stockholm Syndrome to Indian Princesses, Reece uses various subjects in building a new lens with which to examine her personal history within a rereading of the displacement and continued disregard of Indigenous people in North America” (until March 18). THEATRE Prairie Theatre Exchange – Local favourites Debbie Patterson, Ross McMillan and Daria Puttaert make up the cast of the world premiere of Joseph Aragon’s How the Heavens Go. This play searches for wonder where science and the soul collide (Mar 1-18). The season closes with the dark comedy Fly Me to the Moon by Marie Jones and directed by Sharon Bajer (Apr 5-22). Cercle Molière – In Les Allogènes, Canada 150 is reflected upon through testimonies, confessions and heartfelt memories of actual community members (told through a cast of seasoned and amateur actors), who reflect on how they came to be in Canada (Mar 1-17). The youth production Avant l’archipel presents two whimsical characters who explore what happens when encountering our first love, a recommendation for “hopeless romantics and silly-hearted dreamers” (Apr 14).
Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre: John Hirsch Mainstage – There is a lot of buzz surrounding the play The Humans by Stephen Karam. It is noted as a drama that profoundly “sketches the psychological and emotional contours of an average American family.” See it for yourself ... (Mar 22-Apr 14). The season comes to a close with Carey Crim’s Morning After Grace, a hilarious and heart-warming comedy that tackles love, loss, and coming to terms with growing old (Apr 26 – May 19). Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre: Tom Hendry Warehouse – Amelia Bullmore’s feel-good story Di and Viv and Rose explores the evolution of friendship through humour, wit and sentiment (until Mar 24). In the Tony awardwinning playwright Simon Stephen’s Heisenberg, an unlikely match between a 75-year-old British butcher and a 40-something American occurs. A chance encounter propels these two strangers on a fascinating and life-changing course (Apr 12-28). Winnipeg Jewish Theatre – We Keep Coming Back is a co-creation by Michael Rubenfeld and Sarah Garton Stanley. It tells a story about a mother and son, both descendants of Polish Holocaust survivors, who decide to return to Poland in hopes of finding their lost identity and reconnecting with each other. The quest, however, takes an unexpected turn (until Mar 17). The Tony award-winning musical Falsettos chronicles “two years in the life of Marvin, his ex-wife Trina, lover Whizzer, about-to-be-BarMitzvahed son Jason, their psychiatrist Mendel, and the lesbians next door.” Part neurotic urban comedy, this musical also observes the shifting definitions of a family (May 5-13). Theatre Projects Manitoba – A Short History of Crazy Bone is a new play by Canadian poet Patrick Friesen, featuring Tracey Nepinak as Crazy Bone and directed by Andraea Sartison. Inspired by Friesen’s great-grandmother, the play is driven by Crazy Bone who walks on the “outskirts of time, imagination and place – shunned for her individuality, sexuality, and for the nonconventional choices she has made.” This beautiful and difficult tale is not to be missed! (Mar 28-Apr 8). Performances take place at Théâtre Cercle Molière. Daniel Thau-Eleff / Moving Target Theatre – Inspired by actual events, Deserter explores moral behaviour in a complex world, “mixing human struggles with political events, and raises questions about the relationship between civilians and soldiers in countries with (supposedly) volunteer armies.” This production is part of the MayWorks Festival of Labour & the Arts (May 17-27). Performances take place at the Rachel Browne Theatre. Mia van Leeuwen – The co-artistic director of Winnipeg’s out of line theatre is premiering an independent production of a long-time work in progress - Destroy She Said. The performance is a theatre of images inspired by Caryl Churchill’s play The Skriker and features the talents of Natasha-Torres Garner, Ming Hon, Charlene Van Buekenhout, and Alex Elliot (June 14-16). Performances take place at the Rachel Browne Theatre. Manitoba Theatre for Young People – All the way from The Netherlands comes the Arch8 production Tetris, inspired by the game Tetris! This intensely physical dance quartet explores how we connect with one another, building a secret language to communicate where the audience is invited to play along (Mar 23-31). Next up is the heart-warming Goodnight Moon & the Runaway Bunny with stories by Margaret Wise Brown adapted by Jim Morrow. The play includes meticulous puppetry and explores nighttime rituals! Roman Swiderek is renowned for his impressionistic scenes of Winnipeg and its iconic landmarks from past and present. For many Winnipeggers, images of Assiniboine Park, the Bridge DriveInn, The Forks and hockey practice on the rink conjure a familiar rhythm. Skilfully rendered in oils, these finely observed paintings frame Winnipeg through the past decades and present a view of our great city through the eyes of an exceptional artist. Born in Poland, Roman Swiderek began his career painting backdrops for the professional theatre group in his town, Lodz. His talents received early recognition and he refined his skills in a studio provided by his company. After immigrating to Canada, his artistic skills evolved while painting religious icons for churches, portraits of national leaders and set designs for theatres, including Rainbow Stage, the Manitoba Theatre Centre and the Royal Winnipeg Ballet. Several years later, Swiderek founded his own company and designed for the fashion industry in Winnipeg, including the Hudson’s Bay Company blanket division. “I came here for a better life; to improve myself and my family,” says Swiderek, and he did.

Widely recognized for his limited edition prints and art cards, likewise, reproductions of his original oil paintings are collected locally and sent around the world. explorer, painting scenes from northern Manitoba to Victoria, and across the country to the east coast. One of Swiderek’s favourite places to visit and paint was the Rocky Mountains. For 13 years, Swiderek travelled to the Columbia Icefields in spring and fall to paint and display his artwork.
A steadfast Winnipegger for almost 60 years, Roman Swiderek finds himself liberated by the outdoors and embraces our notorious winters. For many years and with great passion, Swiderek would dog sled with his huskies along his favourite Winnipeg feature, the Red River, enjoying the snow and the open sky above him.
“In the spring I would visit, paint, and set up a show in the Icefields iconic red chalet. The majesty of the Rockies and the quiet and peacefulness of nature when off the beaten path, made those hours of painting seem but moments,” recalls Swiderek. His time in the Rockies ended when the chalet was demolished to make way for a new building.
“It always amazed me that here I was mushing dogs on the same river mentioned in Jack London’s books that I read as a child in Poland.” While in Canada, the artist has also been an avid adventurer and

In pencil, he sketches different perspectives and the small details of the buildings he will later paint. Sometimes he would thoroughly research a building, referring to historical details and the building’s origins. Like setting a stage, his paintings could take months to complete. Together now, they form a monumental heritage. Woodlands Gallery and Roman Swiderek have a long history together. The gallery has supported his career through the years by carrying his limited-edition reproductions and art cards. For those works, the commercial availability of his paintings will be a first; several of these original paintings have never been exhibited publicly or available for sale. This offering illustrates Swiderek’s dedication to artistic excellence and serves as an inspiration and incentive for other Manitoba artists to follow. Efficiency and economy have been key to Kraftwerk’s progress for many years, but both have charged innovation. The band’s worldwide 3D tour was essentially the Classic Album show times eight, from Autobahn (1974) through Tour de France Soundtracks (2003), but those electronic songs were revamped with warm, chromium contours and friskier beats, and new 3D visuals were generated to offset the frankly limited stage charisma of four men standing stoically at their digital workstations. DVD and Blu-ray editions are available, but even without them, this eight-disc box of concert recordings – cut crisply, and with no trace of crowd noise – is a fantastic pocket guide to the Germans’ legacy. The treatment of the Radioactivity album makes their coldest album more inviting by tempering those icy robotic voices and smoothing the joins. Tour de France Soundtracks glides, thanks to astute editing. Other tracks have been trimmed or smartly retooled, like “Morning Walk,” Autobahn’s pastoral closer, reinvented as a little hymn-like coda.

Years before they packed concert halls, Pink Floyd could clear high school listening parties in minutes. Ummagumma, the double album from 1969, was heavy on sound processing and tape effects, best (and most considerately) enjoyed through headphones. That period has been overlooked by most historians, but two of the audio/video box sets in the Early Years series shine the searchlight at last on risky invention through concert, radio and studio music. The results in the 1969 box are surprising, not least for suggesting how easily the change came to them. Early drafts for the More movie soundtrack are looser, beefier, with David Gilmour’s blues guitar more prominent and the title theme surrendering sinister rhythms and textures to winning effect. “Careful with that Axe, Eugene” loses it creeping terror as it lifts, fog-like, from the wistful “Green is the Colour.” Those were fearless times.
Virtually every band with a track record is exhuming its past for expanded editions of old albums. With its more sophisticated approach in the Further Listening series, Pet Shop Boys justifies reinvestment, with a thoughtful choice of B-sides, remixes and likeable oddities, packed with a thick booklet that finds Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe musing (often drolly) on every track. Yes, from 2009, was always a charmer, its lighter touch announced from the top n “Love etc.” The revisited edition – one of several in the revised series – is plump with two discs of surprises, from a sensitive cover of a Kate McGarrigle song, “I Cried for Us,” to the jollity of “The Dumpling Song,” written for a Christmas play for children.
J
ulie Walsh is reimagining the art gallery concept. Walsh is owner and curator of Winnipeg’s Soul Gallery and principal of Beautiful Spaces Design Management. Clearly a trendsetter, Walsh has created a non-traditional art retail concept in a venue where patrons view original artwork in a residential setting. Her location is an attractive residential property at 163 Clare Ave in the city’s Riverview neighbourhood, where she has placed fine art within the rooms and on the walls from basement to second storey bedrooms to bathrooms and kitchen with a carefully curated collection from her stable of 32 artists and sculptors, 21 of which are Manitobans. Walsh sees her gallery space as one that breaks the rules and leads to surprises. Indeed, stepping in off the street, I was taken by not just the number of contemporary works that are tastefully arrayed on almost every surface, but also by the high calibre of talent she has attracted to her gallery. Julie reports that the majority of the artists represented are established artists who successfully sell locally, nationally and internationally; she also supports the emerging artist she believes in. “If I’m drawn to an artist, it is because their work touches my soul and can be integrated into this home setting. These are the defining points to the gallery and how I establish if there is a fit,” she explains. Walsh has been selling original works since the late ‘90s and has established a considerable reputation for her ability to source pieces that excite, engage and resonate with viewers. “I am a person who seeks out beauty and I have always surrounded myself with beautiful artistic objects that appeal to my eye,” she says, commenting that her appreciative eye seems to zero in on finer creative works. This natural ability has placed her in good stead, both in building her art gallery and her design business. Her gallery is a busy place. While most patrons visit on a Saturday when it opens each week, they also book by appointment. Walsh tells Style Manitoba that more and more people attend the full roster of events scheduled each year in the Gallery. “We feature solo exhibitions, seasonal exhibitions, and special events such as “Ladies’ Night” and other exclusive events – all of which are accompanied by live music and refreshments,” she notes. “We are a destination gallery in Winnipeg where people can come and relax amidst the ever- refreshed art collection and presentation where we can discuss needs and interests,” she says, standing in the midst of 15 to 20 framed pieces and sculptures that grace the gallery’s large lower level.

ART & SOUL “First came my passion for design, but over time, Beautiful Spaces Design organically evolved to include my passion for art, and Soul Gallery was born in 2011– expressing the symbiotic relationship between art and design. Some of the strongest poems focus on the brutality and violence enacted on Thunder Bay’s Indigenous population.

Cooking Spray 1 large sweet potato peeled and cut into ¼ inch (.6) slices 2 tbsp (25 mL) canola oil 1 small onion, finely chopped 1 clove garlic, finely chopped 1 pkg - 142 g/ 5 oz. baby spinach 1 cup (250 mL) milk - 1 or 2 % m.f. ¼ tsp (1 mL) salt ¼ tsp (1 mL) crushed red pepper flakes 6 eggs 140 g/5 oz. feta cheese Preheat oven to 350F (180°C). Coat a 9-inch (22 cm) pie plate with cooking spray. Layer sweet potatoes in slightly overlapping aligned circles on bottom and up sides of plate. Cutting potato slices in half to fit (rounded side up) around the sides of the pie plate. Coat potatoes with cooking spray. Bake in preheated oven for 20 minutes or until potatoes are slightly tender. Place pan on wire rack. Increase oven temp to 375° (190°C). In a large nonstick skillet, heat oil over medium temperature. Add oil and onion and sauté 3 minutes; add garlic and sauté 30 seconds longer; add spinach and sauté 1 -2 minutes. Remove from heat and spread evenly over sweet potato crust. In a medium bowl, whisk milk, salt, pepper and eggs and pour over spinach. Sprinkle with feta. Bake at 375°F (190°C) for 35 minutes or until egg mixture is set. Chocolate Date Cake 2 cups (500 mL) dates, chopped 1 tsp (5 mL) baking soda 1 cup (250 mL) boiling water 1 ¾ cups (425 mL) all-purpose flour 2 tsp (10 mL) baking powder 2 tbsp (25 mL) cocoa powder ½ tsp (2 mL) salt 1 cup (250 mL) canola oil 1 cup (250 mL) sugar 2 tsp (10 mL) vanilla extract 2 eggs 1 cup (250 mL) pecans, chopped 1 cup (250 mL) semisweet chocolate chips
Preheat oven to 350°F (180°C). Grease and flour a 13 x 9-inch (22 x 33 cm) baking pan. In a medium bowl, stir together dates, baking soda and boiling water. Cool to room temperature, about 20 minutes. In a separate medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, cocoa, and salt. With a hand-held mixer on medium-high speed, beat oil, sugar and vanilla about 2 minutes. Reduce speed to medium and add the eggs one at a time, mixing until incorporated. Reduce speed to low and add the flour mixture and date mixture alternately in two batches, making sure to combine each addition. Scrape batter into the prepared pan and sprinkle
pecans and chocolate chips over top. Bake for 40 – 45 minutes or until toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Cool completely in pan. Preheat oven to 450°F.
1 large sweet potato, peeled and cut into cubes

Brush tenderloin with 2 tsp oil. Sprinkle all sides with Greek seasoning. Set aside for 30 minutes.

Place vegetables on foil-lined rimmed baking sheet. Sprinkle with 1 Tbsp oil and season with salt and pepper mixture. Toss to coat.

Push vegetables to sides of baking sheet. Place tenderloin in centre of baking sheet. Roast 20-25 minutes; then broil until pork and vegetables are lightly browned and instant-read thermometer registers 155˚F.

Transfer tenderloin to clean cutting board. Tent loosely with foil and let tenderloin rest 3-5 minutes before slicing. Serve with vegetables.

he phone rings again, an unknown voice on the other side. The questions posed are always a little different, but they have all inquired for the same reason: “We have a historical home with structural issues. We don’t want to lose the character of the home by eliminating its historic architectural elements and would like to renovate. You’ve been recommended to us from someone you’ve done work with before. Can you help us?” “Thank you for the beautiful kitchen renovation! I know it’s been a year and I couldn’t decide on a backsplash, but I came across something I really like. Is there a way to incorporate a painting as a backsplash?” “I’ve been watching you detail a home down the street from us over the past number of years. Each year something new is added, yet the whole design has a cohesiveness that seems as though it was planned in stages and all works together. We would love to do a transformation like that but don’t have the budget to do it all at once. Can you help us?”

The answer to all of these questions is a resounding YES! It’s hard to label what GTShelters does. Complete design and build projects (including new builds, renovations, additions, landscaping and architectural features), are all integrated using a holistic approach that complements its environment and provides solutions. For example, a 100-year-old, three-storey oak staircase was sloping so badly the homeowners were in tears when told it couldn’t be fixed. GTShelters levelled and supported the staircase, and then restored it to its previous glory. For another project, artist Lillian Taylor was commissioned to produce a painting that was integrated into a client’s kitchen as a backsplash under the cabinetry. It was protected with tempered glass, giving the illusion of windows into the surrounding forest. A large real tree that is visible through a window above the cabinetry was matched in the painting below, accentuating the illusion. Gord Taylor of GTShelters Inc. grew up with home renovations in his blood. His mother
was a real estate agent and artist, his father a spitfire pilot and interior decorator. Their motto was “there are no problems, only solutions.” A diploma in Natural Resource Management, former Chairman of the Lake of the Woods Historical Society, and many years of experience as camp manager of the world renowned Experimental Lakes Area Research Station, Gord took his love of nature, art, woodworking and design, and amalgamated all of these into establishing GTShelters over 25 years ago. It’s likely you’ve seen a project where GTShelters Inc. was involved without even knowing it. At The Forks, there’s the newly added hand-chiselled wood art piece commemorating the Peguis-Selkirk Treaty, along with kiosks and skating shelters, a floating barge to hold the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra for summer outdoor concerts, the award winning Prairie Garden, and the restoration and retail design of the train cars which house Sugar Mountain. Other projects include the exterior wood features at South Pointe School, the bus shelter “City.Block. Stop.” of artist David Parrett next to the U of W, the rooftop deck on the Ashdown Warehouse, and last year, GTShelters Inc.
completed 8,500 square feet of decking at the new Selkirk Regional Health Centre. GTShelters Inc. uses 3D CAD design software to generate complete structural and engineered plans for the City’s permit department. Creating the designs in 3D lets the clients do a walk-through and visualize what they will be receiving. The construction drawings are extremely detailed to clearly define the finished project. “We’ll even design your furniture and artwork if you want,” Gord adds with a laugh. “I have a great team who take pride in their work. My son Chris, foreman of GTShelters Inc., goes the extra mile to ensure the client is updated throughout the process. Depending on the scope of the project, we can complete it from design to finish, but also surround ourselves with the best of the trades. The advantage of being the designer, builder, and general contractor is I can oversee the timing of each element and schedule appropriately,” says Gord.

“The details are everything and what others will notice when the project is complete. I keep my clients because they know if they have any problems, we will be there to make it right,” notes Gord. “We are a referral business based on established trust. Our client base developed through long-term relationships, and has grown mostly through word of mouth. I like to meet with new clients to see what their interests and hobbies are, where they like to travel, what music they listen to, if they enjoy cooking, and what architectural styles they like and dislike. I work with them to come up with a design that they are excited about, without compromising on function,” explains Gord.

“Some designs look dated very quickly. It’s important to make sure the execution of the project is done well and with high standards. Anytime you are adding or changing something in your home, it should bring up the value,” says Gord.

reat things can grow from small beginnings. Such is the case with FRG. Locally famous as Fort Rouge Glass, FRG, as it is now widely known, has come a long way from its south Osborne roots. Today, this local glass product leader has moved into a state-of-the-art new facility where it has upped its game with an expansive showroom, massive shop and a wealth of management offices that show off its design capabilities. “The entire building is a display that shows what we do,” says FRG President Brendan Berntt, the third generation owner of this 50-year old Winnipeg business started by his grandfather. He describes a two-storey structure that showcases massive glass walls and doorways. Indeed, walking into the new building at 58 South Landing Drive, a street located off McGillivray about three minutes west of Kenaston, it is the large open expanse and well of light from floor to ceiling windows that greet the eye. From the ground to the second floor, designers have extended an open staircase made using a custom built stringer with
bamboo treads, glass sides and stainless railings. The stairs lead to second level offices that are all fronted with large glass walls, and doors that allow full light to bathe each office. “In the past we had very little showroom, and space constraints meant we had challenges when it came to warehousing stock and getting trucks onto the site,” says FRG General Manager Michael Messervey. “Now everyone from designers to contractors to the general public can better see what we do, and we can make our customers more comfortable in this new setting,” he says, pointing to the lounge area with beverage centre and 52-inch TV, multiple shower displays where glass door options are easy to discuss, and a boardroom facility where a full range of AV and computerized options are ready to enhance meetings and presentations. Here, Operations Manager, Vince Croker remarks that they have been able to use their new Smart Glass products in the boardroom design. “With the flick of a switch, Smart Glass becomes opaque and obscures just like drapes delivering full privacy behind a wall of glass,” he explains, remarking further that FRG offers SPRING 2018 | STYLE MANITOBA | 33

30 Years Strong T his year marks the celebration of Huntington Homes 30th Anniversary.

• Islands are still big news in new home designs. Magda suggests that behind that continued popularity is their ease of use and how islands fit so well into both busy lifestyles and kitchen culture. Look for examples where custom tables are incorporated to extend the island, and builders look beyond traditional counter surfaces. • Gold is gaining strength as a colour of choice in hardware and fixtures. The days of brushed nickel and chrome are moving away to gold and brass accented pieces in both kitchens and bathrooms. • Colour palettes are trending away from stark to more full-bodied hues. Designers are delivering with more intense colours, such as Ocean Blue and full hits of green. White walls might be great for displaying art, but a strong colour palette can take an interior space to a new level. • Bedrooms with a fridge and sink will be showing up in some designs, as more people turn to their bedrooms as places of solace in a crazy world. Small refrigerators and sinks help make this room a place of refuge.

Oak Bluff West Takes Builders & Buyers Beyond the Limits T
oday’s homebuyers are looking to have it all. Oak Bluff West delivers, combining a small community feel, open prairie views and natural wetlands with all the amenities of urban life just minutes way. The diversity of home styles here reflect this unique mix. “Because of the larger lots, the community consists of many spacious bungalow homes,” says Tara Reid of Qualico Communities. “Most of the inspiration for the builders comes from the prairie influence, drawing from elements of both traditional and craftsman architecture styles. “There are some upscale requirements for a certain amount of stone and brick usage, as well as for much more attractive fencing, which has really helped produce some beautiful homes.” She adds that this, along with larger lots and minimum square footage requirements – 1,400 sq. ft. for a bungalow and 1,800 sq. ft. for two-storey homes – allows for more diversity in the design of the homes. “The larger lots in particular are very appealing to people, allowing for a bigger, more impressive look at the front of the house and great curb appeal.” Parkhill’s award-winning 1,622 sq. ft. custom bungalow at 12 Prairie Grass Lane takes advantage of all of this in a big way. “The large 72 x 140 sq. ft. lot in Oak Bluff West allowed for a triple attached garage, which is rare for most communities,” Thorsteinson says. “The front door is opposite the garage and acts as the focal point of the exterior, with two posts and an overhang, creating shelter from the prairie elements.”

oe Laurin and Claudio Oliveira had been looking for a new home for almost a year. The Sage Creek community, and the outstanding showhome designs and features were completely unexpected and kept pulling them back. “We searched extensively for something that was the right size, budget and had all of the bells and whistles that we had come to appreciate from looking at so many showhomes,” Laurin said. “We then decided to meet with the Maric team to discuss getting a quote to build.” This brought them to one of Maric’s partially finished custom showhomes on Vireo Lane. The pair immediately felt that the footprint and budget for the 1,771-square-foot, two-storey, three-bedroom home was exactly what they were looking for. “There were no floors, cupboards, fixtures, etc., but we were taken with the layout, the elaborate wall of windows and the natural lighting.” “It took about a week to finalize the purchase, and then another four months until possession,” says Laurin. “After more than a year of searching, we finally had our new home.” Dan Rolfe of Maric Homes adds that finding the perfect spec or showhome can be challenging, and rewarding. Designing and building a custom home offers the precision of hitting all the wants and needs for the homebuyer. But when timing of possession can’t be compromised, the scales tip between the perfect house plan and the perfect timeline. “By purchasing a spec home, Joe and Claudio saved themselves time, without giving up the fundamental wish list for their dream home,” says Rolfe.
“There were a number of parallels between what they were looking for and what we were already building: the oversized triple-car garage, functional rear deck with a screened in balcony great for entertaining, as well as many other extra details and the craftsmanship that goes into each Maric Home. It was a great fit!” Laurin and Oliveira have been in their home now for six months and love it. “We have more space, an open concept, and a well-designed home with natural lighting through the many windows,” says Laurin. He continues to be impressed by the neighbourhood’s architectural diversity. “The houses are all very modern and unique, and any similar designs are spaced far apart, so you would really have to be looking hard to spot replicate models. Even the choices in exterior lighting on each home are beautiful, and the differing exterior textures make the houses even more interesting to look at and enjoy.” Another custom builder, Foxridge Homes, has an outstanding 1,855-square-foot showhome, featuring a contemporary bungalow plan at 6 Wildflower Way.

hile a lot of builders have the word “custom” in their name, Hearth Homes is proving it. Every year Hearth continues to showcase tailored details in each house they craft and provides homeowners with more than just specs, but spaces truly designed and built just for them.
Natural maple is used throughout the home, and provides the perfect natural complement to the glossy white tiles that surround the double-sided fireplace, which divides the dining area from the great room, offering both beauty and practicality. One wall of walnut cabinetry surrounds the stainless steel fridge, while the other is a unique functional statement piece that combines walnut shelves with puck lighting alternating with glass shelving. The kitchen accent trifecta is completed by an L-shape of slate grey cabinets and bulkhead above the stove, the matte finish offsetting the sheen of the rest of the space. You are very familiar with Mandy van Leeuwen’s art; you just might not know it. From Main Street in Winnipeg to as far north as Churchill, the Manitoba-based contemporary realist painter has turned some of the bleakest canvases of brick and mortar into iconic murals that pay tribute to the historical events and people that have shaped the province. While these large-scale projects keep her on the public front, her talents are also transferred to residential applications where she transforms rooms into whatever a client can dream of. “I employ a magical-realism style most often, but playing with paint in an abstract approach is a lot of fun, too. The different approaches allow me to be playful and expressive and bring the other elements of a room or space together,” explains van Leeuwen. For the pictured project, the homeowner approached van Leeuwen with a photograph she wanted recreated to help connect the living room to the kitchen. Using acrylic paints with specialized tips, van Leeuwen created an abstract interpretation full of texture and depth, reflecting the birch trees that inspired the client to customize the space. “Often some inspiration is what makes clients connect with me, but some need a vision from me to move the project forward; every project is unique,” she says, adding she’s created art for nurseries, theme rooms, man caves, accent walls and more. High-gloss cabinetry still hasn’t lost its lustre. This modern kitchen in Artista Home’s 35 Trailside Crescent showhome proves that a lot of sheen goes a long way. Along with a glass wall backsplash, the 92-inch cabinets create a dramatic impact, showcasing almost floor-to-ceiling high gloss fronts - Kitchen Craft’s Summit series of acrylic doors - along with contemporary, full-length, flush-edge mounted handles. The glass cabinets feature a stainless steel finished door with a satin (frosted) glass insert to provide a little break in the almost solid wall of high gloss. And it’s not just the exterior of the cabinets that look good. The glass cabinets also feature a matte black finished interior ensuring a contemporary vibe even behind closed doors. Exciting Innovations DUXTON Windows and Doors is ramping up its presence at this year’s Winnipeg Home + Garden Show with a larger exhibition space.
