Award-winning bungalow pairs mountain resort luxury with the modern comforts of home B Y L E I G H PAT T E R S O N PHOTOGRAPHY: SCOTT DESJARDIN & MICHAEL ROBERTS

Well-placed potlights sparkle from the great room’s vaulted ceiling, and unique orb-shaped chandeliers from Total Lighting cast a warm glow from their suspended position. Grounding the entire home are wide-plank engineered hardwoods supplied and installed by Curtis Carpets. The talented interior design team from Interior Illusions worked with the builder to choose the ideal furnishings, accessories, window coverings and finishing materials to enhance the home’s warmth, character and design from top to bottom.

hoever said: “a home is your castle” got it wrong. Why would you want to live in a big, drafty, cold, dreary space surrounded by a water-filled moat? That doesn’t sound very livable, or inviting. But this home is. Yes, it has some castlelike elements: castle-cut stone, big timber beams, enormous spaces, lofty ceilings and an impressive security system. Beyond that, this bungalow built by Artista Homes, is more chalet than castle. “I call it mountain modern,” says Artista Homes’ Frank Cotroneo. Warm, welcoming and rustic in feel, yet full of high-end, high-tech conveniences, this home represents one of Artista Homes’ first major bungalow builds in the Bridgwater neighbourhood. This 2,375-square- foot showhome has since garnered rave reviews from visitors and a Gold Award at the Fall 2018 Parade of Homes. The accolades are well deserved, considering the care and attention Artista Homes has given every luxurious detail at 352 Willow Creek.

Acrylic stucco, wood-look cladding and 30-year roof shingles ensure a maintenance free, stylish exterior, along with garage doors from Creative Door that blend in beautifully with the design. Timber beams framing the front entrance hint at the chalet-like experience awaiting within.

As you enter the home through the massive, 8-foot-tall front door, you are immediately greeted by an expansive space that extends in front of you. Large ceramic tiles in the spacious foyer give way to the wide-plank engineered hardwoods supplied and installed by Curtis Carpets that ground most of the main floor and lower level. The rustic feel is enhanced by the black hardware accents throughout, as well as the aspen millwork used for the baseboards and casings. McMunn & Yates—one of Artista Homes’ trusted suppliers—provided the solid wood interior doors as well as most of the building materials for the home. Soaring above it all in the great room is a 20-foot-high vaulted cathedral ceiling. At night, well-placed potlights sparkle above, and unique orb-shaped chandeliers from Total Lighting cast a warm glow from their suspended position. During the day, a huge bank of black-framed windows let abundant natural light in, offering an amazing view out to the landscaped backyard and lake beyond. The great room’s floor-to-ceiling feature wall of castle-cut natural stone pairs perfectly with the linear gas fireplace insert. This is the place to kick back après-ski, après-work, après-play and to enjoy time with family and friends in a relaxed, cozy atmosphere.

Abundant windows and a glassed-in deck area overlook the beautifully landscaped backyard that includes a putting green, firepit and fountain water feature in a design executed by Netley Creek Landscaping.

A huge modern island of white quartz with waterfall edge helps visually delineate the kitchen in this open concept home. Replete with a large sink, the island also serves as an eating area and meal prep space. Adjacent to the great room is a show-stopping kitchen. Here, a huge modern island of white quartz with waterfall edge helps visually delineate the space. Replete with a large sink, the island also serves as an eating area and meal prep space. The kitchen’s stainless steel Sub-Zero and Wolf appliances will appeal to the home chef, and everyone will appreciate the ample Kitchen Craft cabinetry, walk-in pantry, task lighting and automatic upper cabinets that open and (quietly) close with the touch of a button. The dining room area next to the kitchen is another space that takes advantage of many windows and lovely south-facing views. A serving ledge and more cabinets along the wall are a wonderful convenience. Under-mounted LED lighting adds a hip, understated touch of elegance. Doors leading from the dining room open to a large glassed-in outdoor deck. From this vantage point, you can fully admire the yard, which features gorgeous plantings, a firepit, golf green and fountain water feature in a design executed by Netley Creek Landscaping. Other rooms on the main floor include a mudroom that can also be accessed from the fully insulated three-car garage. The mudroom can be kept out of sight thanks to a sliding barn door that maintains the home’s streamlined look.

With its vaulted ceiling and stone feature wall, there is a sense of both grandeur and comfort in the master bedroom. The stunning ensuite is set apart as a timber-framed enclosure with glass panels installed by Fort Rouge Glass. There are five bedrooms in this home. Two of the main floor bedrooms are tucked away on one side, each with high ceilings and walk-in closets with built-in shelving. Rounding out the main floor are a large bathroom with dual sinks, more quartz countertops and matte black faucets, as well as a stunning powder room and a laundry room with tons of storage. Artista Homes designed the master bedroom and ensuite to be so spectacular, it deserves its own wing. Accessed via a set of three stairs, the master bedroom is truly on a different level. Once inside, you encounter a long hallway with a bank of tinted sliding doors on one side. Hidden behind are full closets complete with a variety of drawers and shelves. On the other side of the hall is a fully glassed-in ensuite. More on that shortly. Entering the master bedroom proper is like walking into a high-end resort retreat. With its vaulted ceiling and stone feature wall, there is a sense of both grandeur and comfort here. Huge windows on the south exposure provide tremendous views and allow in lots of natural light. The master ensuite is set apart as a timberframed enclosure with glass panels installed by Fort Rouge Glass. It’s designed to feel open and modern, but the homeowner can draw a set of blinds across the glass for privacy if desired. Central to this space is a freestanding tub with a floor-mounted faucet. A simple oval LED light

fixture artfully mirrors the shape of the tub it illuminates below. A heated ceramic tile floor keeps the space warm underfoot. An enclosed shower stall features a herringbonepattern tile floor, a bench and body spray system. A floating countertop and storage unit is underlit with more LED strip lights. The toilet is set apart in its own room for privacy. With all there is to offer on the main floor, you wonder how there could possibly be more to complete this home. But there is more. Lots more. And it’s found on the lower level. Plush carpeted stairs lead you down to a space that expands the living area of this bungalow to 5,000 square feet. Artista Homes made sure they made the most of it during the build. “Because we raised the master bedroom, we were able to gain 13-foot ceilings in the lower level,” says Cotroneo. The perfect space for entertaining, with room for a pool table or a home gym, the lower level walkout echoes the feeling achieved on the main: warm and modern, with plenty of functional touches throughout. The talented team from Interior Illusions helped choose the ideal furnishings and accessories, window treatments, flooring, lighting and finishing materials to maintain continuity in the home from top to bottom.

A heated ceramic tile floor installed by Curtis Carpets keeps the space warm underfoot. It’s designed to feel open and modern, but a set of blinds can be drawn across the glass panels for privacy.

More engineered hardwood flooring was installed on top of a structural wood floor with heating ducts underneath. That means the entire lower level is kept at a comfortable temperature all year long. The builder continued the theme of big windows that look out onto the rear of the property, along with wide patio doors that open onto a covered walkout patio. A huge mirror above the convenient serving counter reflects light back into the space. The SPRING 2019 | STYLE MANITOBA | 11

counter is equipped with a bar fridge, sink and cabinetry for the ultimate entertaining setup. Nearby is a cozy seating area perfect for TV viewing or simply relaxing. Adding to the ambience is another linear gas fireplace set into a white ceramic tile feature wall. There’s tons of storage space on the lower level, along with two more bedrooms and a full bathroom. It’s also where you’ll find the home’s brawn: a full high-efficiency dual-stage furnace, as well as its brain: Control4 home automation. Control4 is a fully integrated system that allows the homeowner to control temperature, lighting, sound, video, and more from their smart phone or tablet – either from inside the home or remotely. It also controls security features (no castle moat required).

About the Builder For nearly two decades and counting, the Artista Homes team has surpassed expectations. In fact, you’d be hard-pressed to simply define any of their distinctive custom-built homes as traditional, contemporary or modern. They are in a class by themselves. They are Artistas. Though they are all unique, homes built by Artista have some things in common: they’re well designed, built to the highest quality standards, and tailored to the people living in them. Four brothers—Tony, Frank, Enzo and Gino Cotroneo—lead the familyowned design-build company together with their brother-in-law Fabio Imbrogno. “We have a great family dynamic that translates to how we service our clients, and a tremendous vested interest in cultivating good relationships,” says Frank. “We’re all project managers and we work directly with our clients from beginning to end of the build, and beyond. There’s no 9-to-5 work days for us.” The Artista Homes team likes to push outside the box. “It’s our forte,” says Frank. “We’re not afraid to expand our horizons, adapt to different developments and use our designs and skills to bring our clients’ visions to life. We create unique functional homes built for Manitobans. We’re always striving to get better and better with every build.” After building hundreds of luxury homes in Winnipeg, and as the recipient of a national building award, you might think that Artista Homes could rest on its award-winning laurels. But not according to Frank Cotroneo. “There’s more to come. We’re just getting started.”

THEATRE Prairie Theatre Exchange, with ThÊâtre Cercle Molière, co-presents the world premiere of What To Do With Albert? by Danielle SĂŠguin-TĂŠtreault, translated by Ginny Collins. Albert is 80-something and a teller of tall tales. When his daughter suggests that he move to a retirement home for seniors, he sets off on an adventure instead – a pilgrimage with his beloved wife Simone’s ashes, in a gentle comedy exploring love, loss, father-daughter relationships and how to stay true to yourself, no matter how old you get. (Apr 11-28) The Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre presents BOOM X, written, directed, and performed by Rick Miller, in association with Theatre Calgary and The 20k Collective. Playing more than 100 characters, Rick Miller journeys from Woodstock to the Internet. Showcasing cutting-edge projections and Rick’s virtuoso impressions of politicians, musicians, and activists, BOOM X navigates the baby boom’s tangled legacy. (Mar 20-Apr 13) The season continues with The Cottage by Jake MacDonald. Three very different siblings have a weekend to decide what to do with their beloved family cottage, so they drink beer, argue, and avoid making any decisions. Watch as they solve the puzzle of their inheritance, and sort out their lives in the process. (Apr 24-May 18) Over at the RMTC Tom Hendry Warehouse, it’s John, by Annie Baker. Jenny and Elias are taking their crumbling relationship on a tour of Civil War sites, with the hope that a few days in a Gettysburg bed and breakfast will bring them together again, in this insightful reflection on human relationships. (Apr 3-20) The Winnipeg Jewish Theatre features After Jerusalem, by Aaron Bushkowsky, a Hollywood-style romantic comedy about a Canadian-Israeli love affair between a middleaged schoolteacher from the prairies and a wannabe script-writer/soldier. Featuring Sharon Bajer and Toby Hughes. Berney Theatre, Asper Jewish Community Campus. (Apr 6-14) The Manitoba Theatre for Young People presents The Very Hungry Caterpillar & Other Eric Carle Favourites. From the company that brought Goodnight Moon and The Runaway Bunny, comes three beloved stories by the award-winning children’s book illustrator and author, retold on stage through the magic of black light and fanciful puppets. Ages 3+. (Mar 15-24) Older children will enjoy Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea, the stage adaptation of the classic Jules Verne Sci-Fi adventure, exploring the power of nature and the nature of power. Plunge into a multisensory

experience with unforgettable characters, eyepopping projections and amazing technology. Ages 9+. (Apr 5-14) ThÊâtre Cercle Molière presents Que faire d’Albert?, a co-production with PTE. Danielle SĂŠguin-TĂŠtreault’s latest creation is a new comedy loosely inspired by her own experiences. Albert has become a widower. This new reality is very hard on him. His daughter proposes a new lifestyle: a seniors’ residence. (Mar 7-23) Then, TraversĂŠe is the story of Nour, who takes us through the perilous crossing that has brought her here, drawn by the promise of a better place to live. On stage, one actress relates in words and another in sign language this touching and disturbing quest that reflects a very current reality. Like Nour, half the world’s migrants are children. (No English subtitles). ThÊâtre Cercle Molière, 340 Provencher Blvd. (Apr 18) Celebrations Dinner Theatre explodes with The Big Boom Theory, as Sheldon and Dr. Amy Farrah Fowler battle for the Canadian International Science Award in an all-out battle of the brains, to prove once and for all who is the smartest. Diverse Mix of Canadian Talent BY AILEEN GOOS-BERARD

Woodlands Gallery introduces new artist while renewing interest in Canadian favourites

A

rt collectors will tell you there’s nothing more enjoyable than spending an evening meeting a new artist or seeing a favourite artist’s work in a new light. That’s the concept behind Woodlands Gallery’s upcoming exhibition RENEW, which runs from March 1-30. RENEW is a group exhibition with works by several of the gallery’s artists and a spotlight on their Supplementary Artists Program (SAP) featuring local artist Mandy van Leeuwen. “We’re excited to feature Mandy’s work. She’s an award-winning contemporary realist painter creating works from her studio as well as sizeable murals throughout the prairies,” says Jennifer DeLury, director, Woodlands Gallery. “She approaches her paintings with ‘magical realism’, finding inspiration in the positive transformation of forgotten spaces and objects. Whether depicting old trailers, still life arrangements, or surreal landscapes, her paintings inspire us with a renewed sense of beauty.” Although this is van Leeuwen’s first major exhibition, she’s no stranger to the local art scene – she’s an accomplished mural artist whose work can be seen throughout the province. Her featured work for RENEW illustrates her ability to find the beauty in items that most would disregard. Favourites include pieces called Mixed Tape, Rate of Charge and The Clearing. “I like things with metaphors attached to them,” she says. “I spend a lot of time exploring and looking at items and thinking about the story behind them.”

view on some of our favourite pieces from past exhibitions and pieces that may have arrived in between exhibitions that we have not had the opportunity to display.” Woodlands Gallery represents about 30 contemporary Canadian artists working in painting, ceramics, glass, sculpture and mixed media. Styles range from photo realistic and impressionistic to abstract and non-representational. Artists are chosen for representation based on a number of professional criteria as well as a general fit with the gallery aesthetic and programming. The gallery’s regular programming consists of three or four larger exhibitions and several smaller features throughout the year. This will be their fourth annual SAP exhibition, however they plan to move forward with bi-annual SAP exhibitions. SAP is an initiative the gallery started in 2016 that aims to feature emerging artists from Manitoba for a limited engagement. This mutual experiment provides emerging artists with gallery exposure, allows the gallery’s clientele to survey and purchase work from local artists who are not (or not yet) in their roster of artists, and builds on their mandate to support Canadian artists. “There has been a lot of interest in our SAP call for submissions,” says DeLury. “With the current gallery programming in mind, we are selecting

artists for SAP that are also prospects for future representation in the gallery.” The featured artwork remains on display for between two to four weeks and can be viewed during regular gallery hours. The exhibit promises something for everyone – from first-time visitors to regular patrons. In fact, a visit to the gallery at any time is highly recommended. Woodlands Gallery, located at 535 Academy Road, is a vibrant space where guests delight in a vast and diverse mix of Canadian talent. Those lucky enough to tour the space with DeLury are in for a real treat – armed with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree and an infectious passion for art, listening to DeLury describe her favourite artists is an incredible experience. “We pride ourselves in offering a welcoming and approachable gallery space for visitors and collectors to enjoy and learn about artists and artwork,” she says. “We take pleasure in assisting clients in starting or building their collections of fine art and being witness to the joy art can bring to their lives.” RENEW launches on Friday, March 1 with an opening reception scheduled from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Featured SAP artist Mandy van Leeuwen will be in attendance, and refreshments will be served.

In addition to van Leeuwen’s work, the artwork selected from gallery artists for RENEW include brand new arrivals, works in the gallery’s collection that have not been shown for some time, and works in their collection that may never have been shown yet. “Showing pieces that have not been shown in some time can RENEW interest in an artist or particular piece as we often take a deeper look into pieces we like when viewing them for a second or third time,” says DeLury. “We are encouraging clients to visit the gallery for a fresh SPRING 2019 | STYLE MANITOBA | 19

Brian Eno’s research into ambient music assumed new dimensions through his video art installations. Stationing up to a dozen unsynchronized cassette players in a gallery room allowed not only an immersive experience, where a listener could ‘change’ the music by walking to different points, but also promoted music that would evolve through random overlapping to become what he terms generative music. “Instead of engines of repetition,” he writes, those machines “became sources of endless change.” The six discs of Music for Installations capture long quotes from many of those soundtracks, and more than ever show how far he is from pastel-hued New Age sonic balm. In fact, his music verges on the sinister, in the tumescent clouds of “I Dormienti,” with its strange blips of treated voices and what could be intercepted radio broadcasts, and the chilly drone of “Surbahar Sleeping Music.” Greater space is opened in the guitar sketches of “Kite Stories” and the muffled underwater bells of “77 Million Paintings.” This is a painterly music, crafted with tremendous patience that is not demanded of the listener; dive deep and savour the details.

After surviving a scary bout with throat cancer in 2014, Ryuichi Sakamoto abandoned one work to begin another that would be quick and intuitive, with a minimum of afterthought. “I decided to pay very close attention to when to let go of my brush for every single track,” he writes. Following an almost hymnal opening in “Andata,” Async trusts to relatively sparse reflections on keyboards. “Zure” is built on two synthesizer chords against minimal percussion and wind effects, and dissolves into something different once those chords cease. Worries about a dry experience are defused later, in the glorious synthesizer cascade of “Stakra,” the lovely piano of “Ubi” and two spoken-word pieces, one with David Sylvian, the other with director Bernardo Bertolucci.

JOHN SURMAN Invisible Threads (ECM) Following his latest one-man album, the gorgeous Saltash Bells, English saxophonist John Surman introduces a new trio for Invisible Threads, with Nelson Ayres (piano) and Rob Waring (vibraphone, marimba). Surman’s ear for the handsome and the pastoral continues, as deep and sure as his baritone saxophone and bass clarinet, as lilting as his soprano saxophone. For three musicians who met only a few days before recording they show an astounding empathy, whether in the soft patter of marimba and bass clarinet in “The Admiral,” or how the piano almost tumbles into prominence (“Byndeweed”). Warm reflection is the mood, but Ayres lifts spirits with his own “Summer Song,” while Surman is lithe and leonine on baritone for the closing jazz waltz of the title track.

Prescription for healthy skin, strong confidence BY AILEEN GOOS-BERARD Dr. Amanda Patenaude has some sound advice if you’re considering any kind of non-invasive cosmetic procedure. “I always say ‘look at who’s performing your procedure – does their skin look good? Does it look like they’ve had work done?’ It shouldn’t look like you’ve had work done,” she says. “These types of procedures should enhance your natural beauty.” Dr. Patenaude is the founder of SkinRhumMD Cosmedic Clinic and the East St. Paul Medical Center, a non-invasive cosmetic clinic specializing in advanced medical, cosmetic and surgical skin expertise. With more than 17 years of education and experience (and enviously flawless skin), she says the best place to start is with healthy skin. She subscribes to the belief that if you start with taking care of your skin by following a strict regimen of good quality, medical-grade products, you may only require minimal cosmetic procedures to improve your appearance over time. Thanks to her medical degree, Dr. Patenaude is able to write prescriptions that can be covered by health spending accounts to help defray the cost of effective products. Knowing what to have done can be daunting, but Dr. Patenaude’s friendly demeanour coupled with a vast and diverse amount of experience makes the process easier. When she initially meets with a patient, she helps them determine a plan to achieve their goals by first asking the patient about their concerns; what they don’t like about their appearance. “I always want to know what’s bothering the client; I don’t want to walk in and tell someone what I think they should have done because maybe what I think is a priority doesn’t even bother them and as a woman, I don’t want to give another woman a complex about something she hasn’t mentioned,” says Dr. Patenaude. “No one should have procedures done to make someone else happy, but if it’s

affecting their confidence and self-esteem, we can work together to find a solution that works for them.” Based on that discussion, she provides a list of options the patient can review based on their priorities and budget. To remove any unnecessary pressure, Dr. Patenaude gives the patient time to consider their treatment planning with an assistant to review financial considerations in a discrete and comfortable setting. “I want every one of my patients to feel comfortable when they come to see me so we can build a long-term relationship,” she says. Dr. Patenaude started her business in 2012 with an approach to skin that has been formulated with assistance and training from the best skin specialists in the world mentoring and training her. And this training and mentoring is ongoing to this day – she goes to Beverly Hills a few times a year to work with Dr.Obagi, a world-renowned skin care expert. She’s gained experience training in some of the top cosmetic offices in California that treat A-List celebrities. (Unfortunately, doctor-patient confidentiality prevents her from spilling the tea on who has had a little cosmetic help.) Beverly Hills’ loss is certainly Winnipeg’s gain. Dr. Patenaude holds three Board Certifications (Internal Medicine Specialist with a fellowship in Autoimmune & Autoimmune Skin Diseases), and has the ability to perform noninvasive surgeries inclusive of phlebectomies and sclerosing for varicose vein treatment. With those credentials, she’s capable of treating everything from common skin concerns such as acne, psoriasis and eczema to more serious

skin issues like cancerous skin lesions, as well as performing cosmetic procedures. “I approach the way you look as a component of your overall health,” she says. “The result is a comprehensive approach to cosmetic surgery and medical cosmetic services. I want to help you look your best so you can feel your best.” For medical appointments, such as skin scans and lesion removal, patients require a referral from their doctor. For cosmetic procedures like facial injections (Botox, Dysport, Restylane and Juvederm – just about everything you can imagine as each product enhances differently for different skin types and aging), you can contact SkinRhumMD directly to book an appointment at the numbers below: • Medical: (204) 615-9000 • Cosmetic: (204) 894-7486 SPRING 2019 | STYLE MANITOBA | 23

Bridgwater comes of age

A

lot has happened in the neighbourhoods of Bridgwater since the project kicked off back in the early 2000s. Today, Bridgwater stands out as one of the fastest growing communities in Winnipeg. Reasons are many. Located in the southern quadrant of Winnipeg off Kenaston Blvd., Bridgwater is a multidevelopment community with housing products that include luxury residences to contemporary townhomes and everything in between. Neighbourhoods include Bridgwater Forest, Bridgwater Lakes and Bridgwater Trails. Services for these residential settings are many. The neighbourhood offers a broad range of stores and facilities at its Town Centre, where big box retailers join forces with small independent merchants in a powerful mix of commercial attractions. The Bridgwater community is all part of developer Manitoba Housing’s integrated plans and social commitment that includes taking proceeds from Bridgwater lot sales to help fund the development of new affordable housing, and the rehabilitation, repair and maintenance of existing housing stock, including Manitoba Housing social housing stock.

Four pillars are behind the success of the residential growth.

1. Trails and Trees: There are more than 30kms of walking and hiking paths that meander through the neighbourhoods. These provide connectivity between the communities as well as to major destinations in the southwest area of the city.

B Y

K E L LY

2. Close and Convenient: Bridgwater neighbourhoods are in close proximity to shopping and services. The neighbourhoods feature quick connections to major roadways as well as easy access to the community’s Town Centre and its growing slate of shops and services. 3. Families and Friendship: With seven playgrounds and acres of communal outdoor spaces, Bridgwater is a place where social connections are made easily. 4. Amazing Architecture: Bridgwater neighbourhoods offer new homes from 15 of Manitoba’s leading builders. Expect to find award-winning designs that adhere to strict architectural guidelines that contribute to the overall look and feel of the neighbourhoods.

Business at the centre

According to leasing agents Cushman Wakefield, Bridgwater Town Centre will service the entire Waverley West area with an estimated 13,000 homes and 40,000 residents at build-out. The Town Centre is designed to be a natural gathering place with extra wide sidewalks along Centre Street. Parking is also located at the rear of businesses to help make the street front more pedestrian friendly. Commercial spaces have been filling up. Today, a drive by the Town Centre shows more than 20 retailers and services holding court at the site. Anchors such as Save On Foods and Shoppers Drug Mart are prominent, as are MLCC, Tim Horton’s, and major financial institutions. There is a medical clinic, vet, and physiotherapist, as well as a music school and restaurants, not to

mention a huge Co-op gas bar with a carwash and convenience store. Coming early next year will be Altea Active, an 80,000-square foot, $30 million state of the art fitness centre that will be the second largest facility of its kind in Manitoba. According to Altea Active partner, David Wu, the Bridgwater Centre facility will feature two 25-metre saltwater swimming pools (one for families and one for women only), as well as five boutique group exercise studios that will deliver more than 100 fitness classes a week, and an enclosed Starbucks café. “Historically, we cater to the suburban community,” says Wu, mentioning their previous company built and operated 15 Ontario-based Movati Athletic locations for 20 years. Shortly after their exit from Movati in July 2017, they started working on creating the new improved concept. Altea Active in Winnipeg is the group’s flagship concept and the first in Canada. “We toured the city in April of 2018 and realized that it is missing the type of full service club and amenities that we envisioned. Then we looked at the demographics in the Bridgwater area and saw the growth rate and saw this area as a perfect fit for our concept. This will be a family destination for fitness. While mom and dad are doing yoga or aquafit, the kids can be involved in supervised rock-climbing or ninja courses. We have long winters, and the coming Altea Active site will be a fun and affordable social hub for the community,” he says.

This is the ripple effect of the quality custom home building that Foxridge Homes is known for. Nothing highlights this more than their 2018 Fall Parade of Homes gold award-winning showpiece at 3 Munnion Road in RidgeWood West. with fine details - from the double cut-out, tiled wall above the induction cooktop to the handy coffee station with floating shelves. Added to this is the kitchen’s seven-foot island, which features an eating ledge, walnut-styled cabinets on the dining room side, and inset dishwasher with a cabinet front on the other for a seamless finish. The sleek details find their way upstairs to the master bedroom’s ensuite. The calming space

not only features a double vanity and custom shelving, but also boasts a five-foot, two-person shower with a pebble tile floor, two unique tiled walls, and two rain showerheads. Thankfully, all the bath towels and clothes from the additional two bedrooms can easily be managed in the second floor laundry room, which also houses a sink and additional cabinets – just those final details that complete Foxridge’s quality ripple effect.

The warm atmosphere is felt as soon as you enter the open foyer which features large windows and a surprising accent wall in “raspberry ripple,” a pleasant deep pink hue that provides a pop of colour against the silver oak luxury vinyl plank flooring. Just off the foyer, a glass panelled study makes for a bright office space or flex room, while the vast great room beckons everyone to gather together to watch a show on the walnut panelled feature wall’s 55-inch TV. The 16-foot ceilings and large windows also make the space inviting, while the 53-inch gas fireplace with a cultured stone surround offers elegance and ambience. However, the focal point of the main floor is undoubtedly the home’s two-toned kitchen. This space combines function in the form of white and charcoal painted maple cabinets, a large walk-in pantry, and top-of-the-line appliances,

The Pursuit of Perfection B Y

T O D D

L E W Y S

W

hen Huntington Homes began custom building homes in the late 1980s, their vision was to use only the best, proven construction techniques to build modern functional homes that stood the test of time. Not surprisingly, that philosophy has served as the foundation that’s enabled Huntington to hold the title of Winnipeg’s foremost custom homebuilder for more than three decades. “Now, as then, our homes are built without compromise,” says Rob Swan, owner of Huntington Homes. “Our endless pursuit of perfection simply won’t allow us to make compromises when we custom-build a home for a client.” What does that pursuit of perfection entail? “Absolutely nothing is left to chance when a client trusts us to build a home for them,” he says. “Every aspect of the design is considered from the ground up. Our goal is to build a rocksolid home that perfectly suits a client in every way.” And while the latest technology, innovative thinking, and only the best materials and finishes combine to create stunning yet functional homes, it’s old-fashioned communication that lays the foundation for every Huntington-designed masterpiece. “The first thing we do – we do it with every client we build for – is in-depth research to discover their desires and interests,” he says. “That communication continues throughout the

entirety of the build to ensure that the client has a great experience, and enables us to build a home that’s tailor-made to them.” In short, a Huntington-designed home is the sum total of a collection of custom-designed spaces that coalesce to create a home that offers a stunning synergy of style and function. “Our goal is to build a home that literally fits clients like a glove,” says Swan. “Once the layout’s functionality is maximized, we build in the style. No detail is overlooked. The result is a wonderful collection of spaces that completely suit a client’s unique tastes and liveability requirements.” All the different spaces then merge seamlessly to yield a home that’s a pure pleasure to spend time in. “These homes are dream homes that clients intend to spend many years in. Everything about a home has to be just right to look after your needs today, and your future needs.” An exceptional customer satisfaction rating confirms that Huntington is still delivering modern, functional – and impeccably built homes – all these years later. “We mean it when we say we build a home like no other,” adds Swan. “We’re never going to stop striving for perfection. Our promise to our customers is that they will get a home that’s unlike any other, a functional masterpiece that fits their needs and lifestyle right down to the tiniest details.”

The proximity to Winnipeg also means easy access to shopping, healthcare, education and activities, but with a lower tax hit and no impact fee.” Countryside Crossing is located just 10 minutes east from Portage & Main along Henderson Highway. Discover the advantages of having both city access and a country lifestyle. Visit www.countrysidecrossing.land for more information on the opportunities of this unique new home development.

Homebuyers are drawn to Countryside Crossing for more than East St. Paul’s lower property taxes. In an approach very different from most new home neighbourhoods, Countryside Crossing buyers are not tied to any one builder. Once a lot is selected a buyer can choose any builder they desire, and as long as basic architectural guidelines are met, designs are as unique as the owner.

or those looking for more space and the appeal of country living, Oak Bluff West promises this, plus city conveniences close to home.

attention to detail,” he explains. “They were really open with us, allowing our family to come on site, which gave us the ability to make changes along the way. We were able to experience the space as it was being developed and to get a feel for what was on the plans and how they translated into an actual build.”

“There’s a real pride of ownership in Oak Bluff West, and you can see it through the homes and their landscaping. Our neighbours hold block parties throughout the year and I’m always seeing people walking or jogging along the paths. It really builds on that sense of safety and community,” says Tryhuk.

“Building this home was very special to us because it was truly a custom design that was based on the lay of the land,” says Jeff Baertsoen of Paradigm Custom Homes.

“Oak Bluff West really is a connected community that continues to provide residents with plenty of room to stretch and grow,” says Tara Reid of Qualico Communities.

Tony Tryhuk and his wife Zen have been living in Oak Bluff West since December 2015 with their three sons who are 25, 19 and 16 years old. However, when first looking to build a custom home, the Tryhuks were torn. Tony was born and raised in Winnipeg, while Zen hailed from Arborg, Manitoba. They wanted to give their children the experience of growing up in a small town, but at the same time, ensure their family had all of the benefits of city living.

Built with oversized windows in an L-shaped layout, the home takes full advantage of the spectacular view of the naturalized wetland.

Working full-time from his office in downtown Winnipeg, Tryhuk finds it a sharp contrast from their home’s serene setting.

“As a custom homebuilder, our goal is to bring people’s dreams to life,” Baertsoen explains. “Building custom doesn’t need to be expensive. It’s about giving the customer the flexibility to get what they want by using our guidance to help them stay within their budget.”

“It’s quite peaceful to come home from work and be able to overlook the naturalized wetlands and wildlife,” says Tryhuk. “It’s as though you’re out in nature, yet you’ve got all of the conveniences of the city nearby.”

What they were searching for was a tall order but the Tryhuk family found the perfect solution when they fell in love with a lot on Big Sky Drive in Oak Bluff West. With broad views of the nearby wetlands, this wide corner lot allowed for plenty of privacy.

Three years later, Tryhuk has seen the community mature.

Located just minutes from southwest Winnipeg, Oak Bluff West features wider than average lots and open prairie skies with stunning views of its naturalized wetlands. In addition to its close proximity to the city, homeowners here take advantage of lower property taxes and all the peacefulness that a quiet setting can create.

With wide-open prairie views and homes with spacious lots, homeowners in Oak Bluff West can experience a blend of country and urban lifestyles all in one inviting community.

“We immediately felt this would be a nice place to live,” says Tony Tryhuk. “Yet, it’s still within minutes of every kind of amenity so it gives our family the best of both worlds.” Building a new custom home gave the Tryhuk family a chance to translate the lifestyle they envisioned for themselves into the design of their ideal home. During the development process, Paradigm Custom Homes worked closely with the family to bring their vision to life. “Paradigm showed us everything that goes into their construction, including their remarkable SPRING 2019 | STYLE MANITOBA | 51

arkhill Homes has been exciting the market with their custom construction approaches for decades. This reputation has earned them a top place at the table among Manitoba’s leading homebuilders who prize innovation, craftsmanship and customer forward thinking. “We are all about the details and it shows in our projects,” says Lori Thorsteinson, Broker/Owner, Loren Realty and Sales Manager with Parkhill Homes. She reports that Parkhill is not a mass production builder. This allows them to work on an individual basis with each client and really push the design envelope.

“We are all about quality of construction and offer a wide range of style options, from Victorian to modern and from traditional to transitional. Custom building is what we do and this approach allows our customers to realize their dreams,” she says, adding that they have tried-and-true solutions for areas such as energy efficiency, and their designs offer the latest in décor trends. This spring, Parkhill Homes will offer two display properties in the Parade of Homes. According to Thorsteinson, these addresses are located in Oakbluff West (11 Prairie Grass Lane) and in Blumberg Trail (2 Goodwin

Cove), a site located just beyond the Perimeter adjacent to John Blumberg Recreation Complex off Portage Ave. Both of Parkhill’s displays feature an ample footprint for growing families. Designs include open plan living areas with a focus on informal gathering. Characteristic of Parkhill’s approach is the fireplace, an aspect that contributes warmth in both heating as well as décor. “Linear fireplaces have been very popular,” notes Lori, who adds that they are also receiving more requests for built-in entertainment units as well as cabinets for greater storage capacity

throughout the home. “Our craftsmen have been with us for years and their dedication to detail and quality really shows in each home we build.” In addition to their skilled workers, Parkhill has also sought out suppliers that are among the top companies in their respective areas. For example, Parkhill has been using Springhill Lumber for many years. According to Springhill Lumber General Manager Don Henzel, it’s all about relationships. He suggests that when customers such as Parkhill need a helping hand, Springhill is ready and able to offer support. “Parkhill looks to us because we will go the extra distance and make the effort to get them what they need, when they need it. When Parkhill makes a promise to a customer, we know how important this is to their business. Our goal is to find building product solutions that keep them looking great,” he says, adding that Springhill Lumber is a company with capability such as Moffat, crane and finishing trucks, as well as staff that understand building from the foundation up. Just like Springhill Lumber, Parkhill Homes’ success comes from understanding their clients’ unique design needs. “How do you entertain? What activities do the teenagers enjoy? These are typical questions we might offer to start the ball rolling. We work to facilitate and advise, and can bring our experience to help keep designs real,” says Lori, inviting people to visit www.Parkhillhomes.ca for more information.

Building Beauty No one can deny the appeal of buying a home set against a backdrop of forest, waterways, and natural elements. Pageantry Homes, who build both in country developments and city estates, ensure that their contemporary designs complement the beauty of nature. Their latest showhome offering is set amongst the ample green space of Whistler Hollow, a development in West St. Paul known for its large lots, rural property tax rate, City of Winnipeg sewer, and its close proximity to downtown Winnipeg amenities. This beautiful, custom built, 1,813-square-foot, three-bedroom bungalow boasts a large great room with a floor-to-ceiling Realstone natural stone feature wall with 44-inch gas fireplace, plus ample windows for lots of natural light and beautiful views. The great room opens on to a gourmet kitchen, which features two-tone cabinetry, Quartz countertops and a mosaic tile backsplash, as well as a walk-in pantry, under cabinet lighting, a bar area with built-in wine rack and a large island with a breakfast bar.

The large master suite, which features a walkin closet with custom shelving, also boasts an ensuite with four-foot tiles and a glass walk-in shower, plus a soaker tub, floating vanity with two sinks, and a heated floor.

Pageantry Homes is keeping with the country feel, but this time within city limits. The builder recently sold their latest showhome in Scotswood Meadows, one of Charleswood’s newest developments, set along the Trans Canada Trail (Harte Trail), but will be building in the area again this spring.

ales have been strong for new homes in Prairie Pointe since 2015 when the 640acre, 2200-lot development launched as an extension of the hugely popular South Pointe neighbourhood. Like South Pointe, the new development offers close-at-hand services and links to active transportation networks, as well as additional paths, transit and auto routes. Prairie Pointe’s green spaces will include playgrounds, sports fields and retention ponds. “This summer we will be developing five acres of green space with a play structure, picnic shelter and firepit with seating. This all contributes to the range of community attributes that make Prairie Pointe attractive to new homebuyers,” says Tyler Smith, Development Officer with Ladco, the company behind the neighbourhood. David Borger, Ladco’s Vice President of Development, comments that there is much to offer in Prairie Pointe. The company will be servicing additional lots this year and has serviced 740 lots since 2015, with amenity, lake and park lots still available. “There will be approximately 40 amenity lots to offer in this current stage of development,” says Borger, mentioning that frontages range from 42-foot to 50-foot widths. Borger reports that strong sales have been driven by the presence of leading homebuilders. These builders will be featured in the Spring Parade of Homes with a range of properties on display in Prairie Pointe. Included on the list are Hilton Homes, Qualico, A&S Homes, Ventura

Homes, Randall Homes, Signature Homes, KDR Homes, Hillside Construction and Artista Homes. A great example of how builders are upping the ante at the Parade is 31 Skyline. Built by Hilton Homes, the property is architecturally impressive. According to Spencer Curtis, Sales Manager at Hilton Homes, the interior is bathed in light and offers two outdoor spaces that work to bring the outside in. The design is an open concept with many modern touches. “This design really delivers for families, just like Prairie Pointe,” says Curtis, noting that the development is close to key locations like the University of Manitoba and the Victoria Hospital and close to cottage country routes. Discovery Homes is set to be a new addition to the list of Prairie Pointe builders in 2019. According to Julie Smith, Designer and General Manager at Discovery Homes, the company has been a strong presence in the new home market in south Winnipeg, as well as surrounding bedroom communities. They have done a lot of work in neighbouring Bridgwater community and see their move into Prairie Pointe as a move in the right direction.

Discovery Homes is breaking ground on an exquisite two-storey property that will be ready in September for the Fall 2019 Parade of Homes. “We aim for elegance of design that contributes to a warm and inviting interior environment,” she says. “Prairie Pointe is a neighbourhood for everyone. It’s very inclusive and we are a builder that can meet that challenge.” Prairie Pointe is conveniently located just west of Kenaston Blvd. in the city’s rapidly expanding southern quadrant. The site is only a short drive to great shopping, restaurants and entertainment features, as well as key employment areas and education institutions in southwest Winnipeg. “Prairie Pointe really offers everything a new development should have,” says David Borger, inviting those interested in investigating the lifestyle opportunities of Prairie Pointe to visit www.ladco.mb.ca

“Our customers will see Prairie Pointe as a continuation of community in the south end of the city. Prairie Pointe is a fantastic family area and comes with great connectivity, amenities, and is maturing nicely,” says Smith.

age Creek is a richly diverse community with something for everyone – whether you’re starting fresh, redesigning your life or entering the next stage. The hub of this community is its Village Centre, with a growing list of shopping, dining, lifestyle and professional service options – all just minutes from home by car or foot for residents. One of the newest additions to Sage Creek’s Village Centre is 9Round, a fitness studio offering a 30-minute kickboxing workout. The studio’s co-owners David Thomas and Melissa Rodriguez fell in love with 9Round in 2018, when taking advantage of a Valentine’s Day promotion. After a few months of membership, they decided to take the leap to open their own gym. “We chose Sage Creek because it’s a friendly tight-knit community where everyone looks out for one another and that transfers to inside of our gym,” says Thomas. “9Round is a great way to accomplish a full body workout while meeting new people in the community,” Rodriguez explains. “Plus, it’s fun to kick and punch together.”

pizza or salad and then watch it being made in less than 180 seconds. “It’s going to be a very fun, exciting and highenergy space. You’re going to see the dough being stretched by the pizza chefs and cooked in the oven right in front of you,” explains Nasberg. Sage Creek’s energy and continued growth is positively impacting other ongoing development investments in the community. This year, Dobie Properties Ltd. is breaking ground to build luxury townhome style condos along Grey Heron Drive, which are aiming to offer occupancy by late summer 2019. “We chose to develop here because there’s a sense of individuality and pride in what’s being built,” says Dave Dobie, president of Dobie Properties Ltd. “When you enter Sage Creek, you can tell that there is an extensive plan for this community.” With three different layouts, each unit will offer an open concept main floor with vaulted

ceilings, provide a spacious second level laundry room, and include an attached garage. Nineteen of the 22 units will also have walkout basements that will overlook the naturalized wetlands. Also now under construction is Latitude 49 at Sage Creek, a 400-unit, six building complex by Deveraux Developments. When fully complete this rental complex will offer residents a broad range of lifestyle amenities, including a pool, outdoor barbeque area, firepit, gym, lounge and even a private dog park. “Sage Creek has everything you need, which makes the Village Centre a great meeting place. Having a space like this really develops a strong sense of community,” Thomas notes. “I’m excited to see what else will pop up.” With its broad array of amenities and diverse housing options, Sage Creek is designed to be a home for people across all ages and in all stages of their life, making it a truly complete community.

The welcoming and lively community spirit is what also attracted Carbone Coal Fired Pizza to launch their newest brand - Fast Fired - in Sage Creek’s Village Centre. “This is a young and thriving community with a walkable appeal that promotes an active lifestyle. This fits perfectly with our brand because it’s a healthy concept,” says Benjamin Nasberg of Carbone Restaurant Brands Inc. ack in a 2017 interview with Style Manitoba magazine, Heinz Albers, owner of H. Albers Builders Ltd., predicted his affinity for pairing walnut (a favourite hardwood of Albers and his quality-conscious customers) and white high-gloss cabinetry would be something others would pull from. If imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, Albers is probably feeling pretty good about himself; light woods and high-gloss continue to trend in home construction this spring. That’s the unparalleled level of knowledge and expertise that Albers brings to every one of his custom built homes. Working directly with clients one-on-one from concept to finished product, the company’s exceptionally skilled homes always feature quality construction and aesthetically pleasing, well-designed spaces. Albers latest showhome at 14 Heartleaf Lane in Sage Creek embodies this sentiment. The extralarge tiled foyer, doused in light from large front windows, boasts enough room for an armchair and lends itself as a place for conversation with guests coming or going, or a long linger in the large mirror inset in a custom maple cabinet and accent piece with puck lighting overhead. The tray ceiling is the perfect platform for a statement-piece chrome and moulded glass lighting fixture from Super-Lite Lighting, just one of the many modern fixtures the Winnipegbased lighting company incorporated into the home. The aforementioned walnut and high-gloss marriage is made in the home’s great room cabinetry, while the kitchen takes the richness

of the walnut and uses it to warm the high-gloss cabinetry and cool-toned countertops running along the eight-foot island. Super-Lite added a touch of sparkle to the clean lines with a trio of perfect moulded glass pendants hung above the space. The kitchen accent trifecta is completed by an L-shape of slate grey cabinets and bulkhead above the stove; the matte finish offsetting the sheen of the rest of the space. LED under cabinet lighting was provided for task lighting in the kitchen. With two bedrooms on the main floor there can always be a concern about privacy. Albers took

that into consideration, placing the one bedroom and the master suite on opposite ends of the house. The master bedroom features a walk-in closet with custom wood shelving and a deluxe ensuite, which boasts heated floors throughout the space, including inside the four-by-five-foot shower. Even with a rain showerhead, hand-held sprayer, and quartz bench inside the shower, users may still be persuaded to enjoy the bathroom’s oversized soaker tub, lit by Super-Lite’s simple circular LED ring chandelier.

This home, and the ones that have come before it, pull from Albers’ desire to look beyond the local market for inspiration. His favourite muse destination is Europe, where home design trends are very different from the North American market, taking romantic luxury and pairing it with contemporary simplicity. However, when it comes to an H. Albers home, it’s all his own.

Prairie View Lakes is now into its fifth phase with a grouping of large amenity properties that include lake lots and park lookouts. hile other window and door manufacturers are closing up shop or reducing their market visibility, Durabuilt Window & Doors is stepping forward with exciting new products and showrooms. Already the Alberta-based manufacturer has opened several dedicated Design Gallery locations to showcase its product range. These are 2000-square foot to 3000-square foot facilities in centres such as Edmonton, Calgary, and Lethbridge, as well as Saskatoon. Winnipeg’s Durabuilt Design Gallery is expected to open this June on De Baets St. in St. Boniface Industrial Park. “We see ourselves as a fashion house for the window and door sector,” says Jeff Ward, Durabuilt’s Director of Sales & Marketing. He points to the new showrooms as a good example of this thinking. “Windows and doors are big ticket items that people really need to see before they commit to the purchase. The showrooms give buyers a chance to get up close to the actual product, see how it works and get advice on design trends and materials,” he says, noting that current demand and product innovation has taken windows a long way from the simple white vinyl products that have dominated the industry over the past 30 years. Good examples of the innovative changes Durabuilt has made to its product line can be seen in its Vivacé window system where steel reinforcement nests inside the largest chambers

to allow for large window wall configurations. Vivacé is also beautifully conceived with laminate finishes inside and out, as well as having larger vinyl frames and sashes where thick outer walls combined with dead air chambers to provide exceptional thermal values. What this all means is less frame and more glass and a window that delivers design excitement with sunbathed interiors and contemporary treatments on new home and commercial building exteriors.

Durabuilt has been a leader in new home and replacement windows for over 30 years. Today they manufacture from a state-of-the-art 200,000 square foot plant in Edmonton. Durabuilt in Winnipeg is presently at 72 Durand Road in the St. Boniface Industrial Park off Duguld Road. Visit www.durabuiltwindows. com for more information on their product and service innovations.

Vivacé comes in 11 colours like Jet Black, Iron Ore and Sable, colours that are on point for current design trends. “We’ve invested in laminate film technology to make Vivacé products strong as well as beautiful,” says Ward, noting that Durabuilt has looked to German manufacturing and product design for the laminate that provides a robust finish that is highly resistant to scratching, thanks to its pebble matte finish. Laminates also provide a range of 11 interior finishes. The Omega product line is another interesting option that takes window fashion to higher ground. Omega is a standard casement product that features on trend colour finishes. “Designers are loving this option,” says Jeff, mentioning that Omega is available in five colour finishes: Jet Black, Commercial Brown, Iron Ore, Sable and Brushed Silver. “We also offer Jet Black on the interior of Omega, a real desirable look, as well as a stainable Fir so people can match their woodwork for a more complete interior treatment.”

aylor Farm is a vibrant new community that is nestled along the Assiniboine River just minutes away from Winnipeg, where homeowners enjoy lower property taxes, easy access to all of the advantages of modern life and have the perfect balance of city reach and country ease. Headingley has a long history of people settling and putting down permanent roots in the area. So, it should be no surprise that Taylor Farm is both welcoming new people, while at the same time attracting existing residents from within Headingley who are excited for a fresh start. In September 2018, Michael Lunin, his wife and their three kids – along with Ginger the family bloodhound – moved from their Westwood neighbourhood in Winnipeg to embrace their new lifestyle in Taylor Farm. The Lunin family initially wanted to locate to the Headingley area with its close proximity to the Phoenix School. “I’ve always wanted to live in Headingley because a lot of my kids’ friends live here, so we were always visiting the area,” says Lunin. When the Lunin family discovered Taylor Farm, they were drawn to the community’s rich history and unparalleled natural landscape, which has been carefully preserved and enhanced within the design of the community, resulting in lush and tranquil surroundings. “My favourite place to walk my dog is on the trails that run along the banks of the Assiniboine River and through the basswood forest,” says Lunin. “It’s where I can relax and enjoy the sounds of nature.” “My kids and I actually go fishing on the banks as well,” he adds.

The homes in Taylor Farm are specifically designed to complement the remarkable environment. Carefully crafted architectural guidelines establish strong standards while allowing design flexibility. Taylor Farm’s select group of homebuilders are able to interpret these standards into their distinctive brands, which ultimately add to Taylor Farm’s appeal and style. “Larger lots allow us to build spacious bungalows with three-car garages, so with an area like Taylor Farm, there is more room to be creative,” explains Frank Cotroneo of Artista Homes. “Since the lots here are also quite wide, we’re able to design and build homes with features such as side entry garages to create an L-shaped home. This kind of adaptation is something that often can’t be done in other communities that we build in.” The design for Taylor Farm also provides the opportunity to create homes with walkout lower levels that back onto wetlands, scenic trails and the Assiniboine River.

to choose from, including prestigious river lots, some of which have recently become available.” Living in Taylor Farm allows the Lunins to be a part of the Headingley community while having a strong connection to the outdoors. To complement this, the Lunin family was able to nestle their home onto a large pie-shaped lot in a cul-de-sac. “The extra room in our home allows our kids’ grandmothers to stay overnight when they visit,” says Lunin. “Although we’re close to the city, we really use this as a bonding time for our family and as a sort of retreat for our parents.” However, it is the vision for the community that ultimately made the Lunin family comfortable with their choice to build new in Taylor Farm. “We really enjoy living in Taylor Farm and although it isn’t yet complete, we can see that it’s going to become an extraordinary community as it matures,” says Lunin.

The Lunin’s striking new family home took inspiration from an original Artista plan, which was then customized with adjustments throughout. “When building new, you have the opportunity to design your home by choosing the layout and its products, such as the flooring materials, paint colours and stone options so you can really make it your own,” says Cotroneo. “Taylor Farm’s showhomes, located on Fetterly Way, are where people can draw inspiration and get an idea of what type of features they may want in their new build,” explains Tara Reid of Qualico Communities. “As development expands, there will be more options available SPRING 2019 | STYLE MANITOBA | 69

HOMES & Neighbourhoods

Leading by design Since 1985, Hearth Homes has been working hard to create new homes that are as unique as their residents. Self described as being very discriminating about the dozen of projects they take on each year, Hearth Homes has based its success on its design forward approach, interesting use of materials and an unwavering customer focus that has seen the company go complaint-free after more than 250 custom builds. “The idea is to show that it’s possible to construct homes in Winnipeg well above the current standard. We build for people who seek unique,” says Liam Milne, Hearth Homes’ Design and Marketing Manager. Liam points to their display properties in the Spring 2019 Parade of Homes as good examples of this thinking. This season, the team at Hearth Homes has sited three neighbourhoods for the Parade - Taylor Farm, Sage Creek and Ridgewood West.

“Our Taylor Farm location at 23 Fetterly Way is a maximalist Art Deco design that features a lot of drama on the exterior with a deep raspberry stucco, pewter stone and cedar tone doors. In Sage Creek, we have a property at 40 West Plains Drive that is designed as a mid-century modern tropical paradise. In Ridgewood West at 23 Munnion Road, we have created a contemporary minimalist masterpiece,” says Milne.

“Our homes feature very functional plans with great bones. These are homes that work for families, stand up to the rigours of day to day life, and maintain their quality of design and appearance over the years.” Discover Hearth Homes’ design edge at the Spring 2019 Parade of Homes. Modern Window and Door Designs B Y A L D U E C K & AY N S L E Y D U E C K Today’s stunning, modern homes often include open floor plans, taller ceilings, and indoor-outdoor living designs. Windows have a huge impact on how this vision executes, especially amongst design driven homeowners. Following are a few trends for windows and doors that are Instagram-worthy and have the durability and insulation you want for your home: Floor to Ceiling Glass The insatiable demand for bigger views is making 8-foot, 9-foot and 10-foot tall walls of glass the norm. New systems out of fiberglass can help execute these feature walls, while maintaining a high level of energy efficiency with Triple Pane Argon Low-E glass. Word to the wise - ask about the right type of Low-E for your application. Without the right roof overhangs or shading from nearby trees, your space can overheat. A low solar gain Low-E coating can help manage the heat without the glass becoming too shaded. Colours and Trims The last several years have seen considerable demand for black - in and out - as well as Espresso or dark brown, and metallic silver – sometimes with a split-finish white interior, but more often with a dark interior. Dark interior colours are very effective at defining the architectural lines of your home. For the cleanest trim detail, look for a commercial style drywall return, rather than having casing around the window. Statement Entrance Doors An amazing amount of creativity is now possible in entrance door systems. Incorporate as much glass as you wish, both in height and width. Homeowners are no longer limited to 1 or 2-foot transoms and sidelites, but can add full sized windows to have a huge impact and bring lots of natural light into their entrance area. Pick a punchy colour or rich wood grain finish; add a multi-point lock for superb security and air-tightness; a pull bar or large handle set, and you’ll have a oneof-a-kind entrance for your guests. Explore your window and door options in the showroom at Duxton Windows. Easy Breezy Outdoor Living

OUTDOOR LIVING

2019 is the year when outdoor furniture and décor truly begins to blur the lines between inside and outside. From modular options to neutral palettes, this spring you’ll find your favourite space will be in nature with the hottest trends. When it comes to the design of outdoor furniture, functionality is one of the most important factors for 2019. Patio furniture should provide the ultimate level of convenience, allowing users to easily move it to a new spot, store it to free up some space, and create a functional outdoor area in general. Modular collections, like Dufresne’s new Beachcroft series, offer the movability for creating good looking and great working spaces. Inspired by driftwood, this easy-onthe-eyes collection is also simple to customize and reconfigure based on space. Sectionals include 3, 4 and 6 person options, while armless chairs can be added for more seating to any side. The series is complemented by casually cool coffee tables, end tables, and a dining table featuring X-leg farmhouse styling and a thick porcelain tabletop. While it’s common to think large with outdoor setups, mini seating areas or vignettes are the next big thing for 2019. These can be destination spots on an open lawn or the corner of a balcony - perfect for watching TV, having wine with friends, or catching up on weekend reading. Whatever the area, the key is to keep it clutter-free and use clean lines. A conversation set like Dufresne’s three-piece Cotton Road adds a little crisp, Boho-chic comfort with its resin wicker over rust-proof aluminum and comfy cushions wrapped in low-maintenance Nuvella® fabric, made for easy-breezy outdoor living. In keeping with clean lines, this season there’s no need to go overboard with decorations and additions because even a single one can transform your outdoor space into a truly tranquil oasis. For instance, a vivid cantilevered umbrella over a sectional, or a vibrant rug under your outdoor furniture can complete a space and add some colour to the light, airy wood finishes and neutral fabrics being released in 2019. Visit Dufresne’s showroom and outfit your outdoor living area with the latest designs, colours, and materials to make this spring the trendiest ever.

OUTDOOR LIVING

Wow Everywhere What’s the best way to end the year? Win an award. Equally as good? Start the new one with a few more accolades. Netley Creek Landscaping not only garnered the 2018 award for Top Custom Landscaping Company in Winnipeg, but also recently took home four awards from Manitoba Nursery Landscape Association; two of which will now move on to the National Landscaping Awards. It’s extremely easy to see why the pictured project was one of those prizewinners. This large-scale, shapely design included multiple pieces that needed to be seamlessly connected so that everywhere you looked there was wow factor. The multiple seating areas were linked by linear lines of Barkman weather gray pavers, while a raised patio with staircase helped to blend a swim spa, a midproject addition, into the existing landscape dotted by large boulder walls. The grey tones of the stones were offset by the natural wood privacy screens and pergola, installed by Blue Chip Decks, which will one day house a bar and outdoor kitchen. Along with the hardscapes, Netley also worked with the client to create plenty of colour with the proper plantings, including a semi load of large trees and roughly 125 shrubs and perennials placed throughout

the entire property to offers a variety of hues through all seasons.

build or giving a yard new life, Netley is sure to add those little signature touches to make sure there’s wow everywhere.

Maintain Perfection Contemporary and clean landscaping doesn’t always mean having to keep up with perfectly coifed lawns and uniform shrubbery. Creating curb appeal, while at the same time keeping it low maintenance, can easily be achieved with thoughtful design and proper plant selection. Paul Szakacs of 3 Seasons Landscaping Inc. states the most common request they get from homeowners is for low maintenance landscaping, either because they don’t know how to do the work, or do but don’t have the time or energy. “Skipping plantings altogether can kill curb appeal and create a sterile look,” he says. In the case of this unique Tuxedo bungalow, Szakacs designed new gardens/plantings to create a contemporary look that didn’t take away from the home’s design, and required minimal upkeep. Since the house was the focal point, he went with simple, mass planted perennials and shrubs - autumn joy sedum for fall colour, dwarf Korean lilac for fragrance, goldmound spirea for colour contrast, and Karl Foerster grasses for height. These selections require virtually no maintenance, and by covering the beds with landscape fabric and rock, there are no unsightly weeds to remove.

Eliminating the need to pull weeds is something 3 Seasons Landscaping Inc. can also help homeowners achieve when creating paving stone patios, walkways, and, in the case of this home, driveways. “New sand products are available for the joints in the brick to eliminate weeds altogether,” states Szakacs, adding brick adds

texture and complexity that you can’t get from plain concrete, plus the costs are also very comparable 3 Seasons Landscaping Inc. can design and create both hard and soft scape options for homeowners looking for that curb appeal without the work.

DESIGN &DECOR Large Scale Ambition When Patrick Chan of Kitchen Craft and Artista Homes come together, it usually means big things. In this case, it was a massive almost 21-foot kitchen at the custom homebuilder’s latest showpiece, 2 Ike Kraut Place, which blends together sleek modern style with contemporary function and features. Even with 10-foot ceilings, Kitchen Craft took the cabinets right to the top, providing an abundant amount of storage space. Utilizing Kitchen Craft’s Summit door style, in both the light acrylic glacial and dark metallic Gibraltar, the fronts feature a streamlined look by utilizing a modern full-length flush edge mounted handle. While the cabinets are tall, the island is long, stretching almost 10 feet with quartz waterfall gables on each end. Guests can pull up a stool, or four, on one side, while the other houses soft-close drawers, a dishwasher, and microwave drawer. Ensuring the appliances - a Subzero builtin fridge, two Subzero wall ovens, a 36-inch Wolf gas cooktop, and an Elica built-in hood fan - were as streamlined as the rest of the room, each piece was flush mounted. This also includes a 24-inch Subzero bar fridge inset in the kitchen’s entertainment area, which provides extra space for prepping drinks and an extra sink for washing out wine glasses.
