the agenda A Manitoba summer can go either way weather-wise, and this year, we’re off to a great start with a nice balance of sunshine and rain. In fact, it’s delightful outdoors at this very moment, which is great for anyone working on landscaping projects this weekend. Developing your outdoor space is such a gratifying experience. Whether you do it yourself or hire a pro, the results can be extremely rewarding. Featured in a portion of Style’s outdoor living section, Don Carson’s backyard retreat is a case in point. Looking through the gorgoeus images of his property, I have to admit – he reallly does have it all! From a beautiful pool and spa to an amazing outdoor kitchen to seating areas replete with fabulous furnishings and a fireplace, what more could one possibly want? With a backyard oasis like that, I doubt the Carson family spends much time indoors during the summer months. Along with outdoor living coverage, Style Manitoba’s latest issue is brimming with other design ideas and sources. In our fabulous home story, A Perfect Balance, Leigh Patterson captures exactly what builder Kurt Streu intended – a contemporary design that blends beautifully with the comforts of home. And if you’re seeking a great new place to shop for the latest home décor, window treatments and accessories, check out Bright With Design Promise for the lowdown on Inerior Illusions’ exciting relocation to the Penthouse Building on Princess. Congrats to our dear friends the Zelicksons on the move to their uber chic new space! Last but not least, we are thrilled to feature Il Divo as our cover story this issue in All The Right Notes! The world renowned operatic pop vocal group will be performing in Winnipeg at MTS Centre on July 31st. No doubt their exceptional voices, good looks and cultural diversity will make for an unforgettable experience in high pop!

Contemporary build and meaningful design blend with A “contemporary” home denotes sophisticated, modern, clean design but the reality is that these homes are lived in, too. Kurt Streu is a builder who understands and honours the basic human need for comfort in our surroundings. Completed in November 2011, this custom built home located in Pritchard Farm Southlands is no exception. A blend of 6 | STYLE MANITOBA | summer 2012
function, practicality and striking architecture, it is a home that honours the homeowners’ design objectives while truly representing the family-focused lifestyle they desire. Bringing all of these elements into a dream home like this required nearly two years of planning before the foundation was poured. To begin the process, the homeowners contacted K. Streu Homes co-owner Kurt Streu, a builder
who had completed another family project in the past and in whom they had a high level of trust. Streu, a steady source of guidance throughout the design phase, relied on the expertise of D.R.A.W. – Design by Rick A. Wiebe and his integrated design philosophy to begin developing the homeowners’ vision into an architectural concept.
The result of this seamless teamwork between homeowners, residential designer, interior designer and builder is a home with exceptional integration of functional and aesthetic elements, overall design cohesiveness, and most importantly, a living space that perfectly represents and suits the people who live in it. “Structurally, the home is quite different but it still fits with the surrounding neighbourhood,” says K. Streu Homes co-owner Kurt Streu. The home’s façade is clad with a combination of saw cut Manitoba Tyndall stone and stucco. Applied by Metro Plastering, the stucco was textured with cutlines to add visual interest. From the street, rigid forms in the hardscaping complement the style and lines of the home’s architecture. Wiebe’s design included an overall landscape plan incorporating large concrete pads leading up to the front landing, a huge entrance canopy ingeniously supported by massive custom metal triposts and large rectangular metal landscaping cages. The cages are filled with rocks and will be planted with Karl Foerster grass for its striking, tall plumes to accent the home’s style. Moving to the private yard at the rear, the look will begin to soften with the planned addition of hydrangeas and lilacs. The home is situated on a double lot at the end of a bay, so an elevated wraparound deck was designed to take full advantage of the great view of a small forested area adjacent to the property. Maintenance-free composite decking forms the base for this additional 700 square feet of living space. Keeping the night chill at bay is a steel gas firepit set into a Tyndall Stone base. A glassed-in railing provides protection from wind, while a custom-built pergola, also designed by Wiebe, arches up and over to shade the eating area.
A perfect balance the comforts of home Once Wiebe and the homeowners established the physical form of the home and much of the interior layout, Wiebe invited interior designer Joan Sikorsky of Joan Sikorsky Design to collaborate on finalizing the details and some of the home’s key architectural features. To achieve cohesiveness and consistency so critical to a modern-style home, Sikorsky worked closely with the homeowners on every

Transitioning from the deck to the 2,300 square foot main floor emphasizes the easy indoor-outdoor connections integral to this home. High 11-foot ceilings soar to 17 feet in some places, and the abundance of natural light is evident everywhere. According to Wiebe, the interplay of light and shadow throughout the seasons was paramount in the orientation of the home on the property. Overscale fiberglass triple pane windows take full advantage of southern and west exposures. ”Because there is less frame-to-window ratio, the windows don’t detract from the home’s clean profile,” says Streu. A strategic combination of blinds and draperies make it easy to adjust light conditions throughout the home. Slim blinds are subtle and unobtrusive, fading away into the background when drawn. With three decades of homebuilding experience, Kurt Streu has honed his skills at sourcing quality products from suppliers like Star Building Materials, as well as balancing flawless design with the ebb and flow of everyday life. Streu’s expertise was greatly valued by these homeowners, who have a young child and for whom an open concept was extremely important. So, when one is occupied in the kitchen, it is still possible to be part of the activities taking place in other areas of the house. Organization is key to keeping things tidy in the large open kitchen, making the adjacent walk-through butler’s pantry a welcome asset. Replete with tea/coffee serving area, a second fridge and roomy cupboards by Woodwise Custom Millwork (David Klassen), the pantry provides additional functionality. In the kitchen, stunning dark ebony thermofoil cabinetry sourced from Kitchen Craft Cabinetry was chosen for its unique zebrawood pattern. There are no external handles to break the clean lines. Similarly, small appliances are tucked out of sight in a Kitchen Craft
Funky and functional, the open concept kitchen boasts a streamlined profile thanks to Kitchen Craft cabinetry and white quartz CaesarStone countertops from FloForm. The main floor is graced with ecofriendly reclaimed elm wood flooring from Wood Anchor. Lighting fixtures from Super-Lite liven up the dining room and transition feature wall beyond. cabinet shelving unit at one end of the main counter. An island topped with white quartz CaesarStone adds a fresh, fun note. Workflow considerations are everywhere – for example, everyday dishes are conveniently stashed in a corner cupboard of the island next to the brushed stainless steel dishwasher. A unifying theme exists here, thanks to thoughtful design and consistency of wood tones and textures. The spacious living room is a literal people magnet, perfect for gatherings. The room features a wall of large, slatecoloured ceramic tiles with a stainless steel gas fireplace inset, offset at the right by a sliding panel that opens to reveal a flat screen TV. When the panel slides down, it artfully blends back into the wall. Gorgeous light fixtures from Super-Lite illuminate the space and the textured area rugs to complement the beautiful reclaimed elm wood flooring that is also found throughout the main floor.
A roomy glassed-in shower stall replete with luxurious rainshower head also from B.A. Robinson and installed by Derksen Plumbing & Heating, further lends to the spa-like atmosphere. Ample storage is yet another thoughtful touch, with the walk-in closet off the ensuite offering loads of storage for linens and clothing. As well, a large mudroom/laundry room leading from the spacious three-car garage entrance has plenty of pegs for hanging items and a long
Warmth underfoot continues in the spectacular ensuite off of the master bedroom, where heated floors and ceramic tiles from The Floor Show contribute to this place of refuge. Heidi Streu of The Floor Show assisted the homeowners and designer with all of their flooring selections. Two separate sinks with granite tops allow for individual space and storage, and the large freestanding MAAX Collection soaker tub from B.A. Robinson is a contemporary nod to its clawfoot predecessor. summer 2012 | STYLE MANITOBA | 9

About the Builder Kurt Streu comes to building houses honestly. A carpenter by trade, Kurt worked alongside his father in the home construction industry for many years, before creating K. Streu Homes in 1988. Since then, Kurt and his wife and business partner Heather have made a name for themselves as creative builders dedicated to their growing list of clientele. Attuned to every client’s lifestyle, needs and budget, Kurt and Heather are genuinely committed to making the process of building a custom home an enjoyable and rewarding experience. Working with their clients every step of the way, Kurt and Heather establish a level of trust from the beginning; ensuring client questions are answered and their concerns addressed.
Traditional to contemporary, lets’s define, then create your perfect living space.
Unafraid to explore new materials, products and ideas, K. Streu Homes has been a consistent front-runner in the industry. For example, they were the first in Manitoba to utilize precast concrete in new home building. They are continually researching new materials and exploring new possibilities for design. Synonymous with innovation, style and quality, it is no wonder that K. Streu Homes is one of the most sought after homebuilders in Manitoba.

Auto Ideology Secrets to shopping for a car revealed photography: Becky Fleury
Trevor Nott, President, NOTT AUTOCORP
After 20 plus years in the Auto Industry, one of the greatest compliments I have received in business was from a new client who said “When I see your Nott logo on the back of a car, I peer in to see who is driving and think they must be SMART!” Now I plan on educating our potential clients further, to a level of ‘Bachelor of Smart Shoppers Status,’ with car dealership secrets!!
1. Dealers don’t own the cars! The majority of a car dealer’s inventory funds are advanced by the bank and margined by a varying percentage based on number of days in stock. This motivates the dealers to turn over the inventory quickly, to both avoid depreciation and to ensure they have the bank funding most of the value of the cars.
5. An $80,000 car does not really cost $80,000? What?! Why Nott? If you buy an $80,000 car depreciated for $40,000, drive it for 2 years and sell it for $35,000, 2 years later that car cost you $2,500 per year total? Amazingly, the depreciation cost to own a once $80,000 car translates into around $200 per month. At Nott Autocorp, we call this your (TCD) True Cost of Driving. We advise and position our clients in such a manner that we try to optimize the right time frame and depreciated price point to both own and to remarket the vehicle.
Finally, a few words of advice when car shopping.
Simplify Your Car Shopping… What do Buyers want? 1. A reliable vehicle that meets the needs of your lifestyle at a very fair value. 2. An ethical dealership that operates in a transparent honest manner and offers great trusted advice and service! Why Nott?! Visit us online at www.nott.ca or in person.
2. There is no such thing as 0% financing? True zero percent is as real as the Easter bunny! Ask the Bank of Canada if they offer 0%. Either the dealer or the manufacturer buys down the rate to help market cars. At the end of the day someone is paying. The banks do offer special lower rates through the dealer finance offices, but not a true no cost zero percent.
3. Car Salesmen are not human? Actually this is false! We bleed, cry, laugh and put our plaid pants on one leg at a time just like you. Truth is, like any workplace, sometimes staff become a product of their environment, wherein they have been surrounded and influenced by a fundamentally flawed environment and were poorly trained. At Nott Autocorp, we only hire ethical great people who happen to love cars and talking to people! We are curlers, artists, golfers, coaches, fathers and sons, the same as in other workplaces.
4. Cars depreciate and no one really knows how much? Many factors determine future resale market value, and only time and wear can determine the final value. Most appraised values are an estimated value depending again on many variables and factors. Reliability, overall condition, and market conditions such as economy and fuel costs also factor in to future resale values.

Your
Thoughts My husband and I really loved the home featured as the cover story for Style Manitoba’s recent spring edition. The clean contemporary design was especially appealing to us, but the ensuite bathroom was truly the coupe de grâce! From the spacious layout to the unique soaker tub, beautiful vanity and fabulous glassed in shower, this ensuite left us longing for a Huntington Home of our own! Great coverage – excellent home design. Sara & Jessie Smithson, Winnipeg I enjoy checking out the luxury vehicle coverage in Style each issue. Both Mercedes and Nott always get my attention, but this issue, my wife actually read the Nott Auto Corp piece (What Women Want). She mentioned that the article brought up valid points for females seeking new wheels at a dealership – mainly that high-pressure sales techniques truly are a turnoff for them. Hats off to Nott for treating their female customers with the same respect given to the men. Chuck Anders, Winnipeg The homes and neighbourhoods section of Style’s spring issue was an excellent overview of where to look for a new home this year. The photography was great, showing home designs by a variety of quality builders and glimpses of the communities in which they are situated. My wife and I are planning on downsizing and relocating to another part of the city this summer - your magazine was a very helpful tool in our search. Gene Tellier, Winnipeg I enjoy the landscaping and outdoor living editorials in Style Manitoba, and your latest issue was no exception. Good ideas and lovely pictures, a wonderful source of inspiration for those who want to develop their outdoor space and start really using it. I also love the recipe section, Fab Finds and Stepping Out. Your publication is a great guide for Manitobans for so many reasons! Rya Pederson, Winnipeg

Take four talented singers from different countries and different musical backgrounds, combine them with a music marketing genius, and you get a genre-defying success story - an ensemble capable of selling 26 million albums worldwide.
French pop singer Sébastien Izambard, American tenor David Miller, Swiss tenor Urs Bühler, and Spanish baritone Carlos Marín make up Il Divo, the multinational operatic pop vocal group put together by Simon Cowell. Il Divo has performed with Barbra Streisand on one of her rare tours, sang the opening and closing ceremonies at the FIFA World Cup, and appeared at President Barack Obama’s Inaugural Ball in Washington, DC, and before over 33,000 people in Paraguay. The quartet is currently on another worldwide tour (their fourth) to support their latest recording, Wicked Game. They’re playing before fans on six continents, from Africa to Asia, Europe, and then North America. They hit Winnipeg this summer. David Miller and Sébastien Izambard talked to Style Manitoba from Spain, in the midst of some performances on the Iberian peninsular. “We’re on the last part of the first half of the tour,” Miller says. “Barcelona is gorgeous,” he adds. “One of those perfect days.” He goes on to describe how their live performances have changed over the years, as they deepened their understanding of their audiences and each other. “When we started, we had our own careers,” he says. “People want to see our personalities on stage. We’ve thrown out the playbook on stage and we’ll see what happens. We’ve always tried to create a show that reflects what we four do vocally,” he adds. “Create a sense of drama and excitement and romance. This year, we decided to back off from tricks and focus on the music and the four of us. We have a full orchestra. We put the orchestra on stage and just let it rip! We take the audience on a journey without distracting from the music.” Izambard points out that the band worked on the show with Creative Director Brian Burke, who’s worked with Cirque du Soleil, as well as on Celine Dion’s long-running Las Vegas show, A New Day. “It’s so powerful,” Izambard says. “He’s brought such vision. It’s very, very elegant and simple. We realized throughout the years that it’s not just a spectacle. Everyone says it’s our best tour.” The two are eager to talk about the new album as well. Wicked Game (their sixth) is a wide-ranging work featuring a dramatic cover of Chris Isaac’s dark romantic classic. “It’s very risky, but I’m really glad with that record,” Izambard says. “The choice of songs are much more dramatic, different.”
All the Right Notes By Bruce Symaka
Miller says recording the CD was a laborious process. It took 18 months to find a balance so that it made sense.
back. Canada got us first, before the US.” Reflecting on their multi-national origins, Il Divo sings in English, French, Spanish, and Italian.
“We tried different things in the studio,” notes Miller. “A whole pile of ‘what-ifs.’ I really think this CD is one of our best. In terms of production, our vocal maturity, it’s a fantastic album. I get shy boasting about it,” he adds, laughing.
“It was difficult working together at first, mixing cultures and languages,” Izambard says. “But throughout the years, working together, we put all that ego aside and turned all the negative into positive. To grow like a band, it’s like an arranged marriage,” he notes. “We have a lot of fun together. It’s super fun now. It’s very easy.”
The European tour included a performance for the Queen’s Jubilee. (You could describe Il Divo as an English group with no English members.) Next, Il Divo comes to North America for dates across Canada, the US, and Mexico before heading back to Europe for the Proms in the UK, and then Eastern Europe. “The reception in Europe has been amazing,” Izambard says, but he hints the best is yet to come. “I love Canadians in general. I’m coming here with my kids and my wife. I’m really excited that they’re going to experience the culture. It really is a nice mixture of European and American cultures,” he adds. “Canadians are easy-going. That’s something I really like.”
“We see how the branches of the tree are branching out,” is how David Miller puts it. “We’re different in the way we see things and feel things,” Izambard says. Spaniard Carlos Marin is loud on the trains, he claims, and Urs Bühler displays quiet Swiss professionalism. “David is American and is always trying to be in the middle of things,” he explains. “And me - I’m French and we’re very sensitive. And if something doesn’t work, it’s up to us.” Il Divo perform in Winnipeg on July 31st at the MTS Centre with Nikki Yanofsky.
“Canada has always been a huge supporter of our music,” Miller adds. “We’ve always loved coming summer 2012 | STYLE MANITOBA | 23

Food with a view Patrons of the Promenade Café & Wine Bar aren’t afraid to admit it: It’s a Prairie eatery after our French heart. Located in St. Boniface at the foot of Esplanade Riel overlooking the Red River and monolithic Canadian Museum for Human Rights, Promenade has most restaurants beat for breathtaking views. Add elegant décor, expert service, an outdoor patio, live music, and friendly spirit - and you’ve won me over! But that’s a no-brainer. The Promenade crew is Shawn and Connie Brandson’s award winning team from the now defunct, but formerly famed, Provence Bistro. For drinks, a big bottle of Brasserie de Saint Sylvestre 3 Monts gets uncorked. Brewed since the 1600s, this “bière de garde” (or “old ale”) is a malty return to nature with hearty Flemish hops. The Dinner menu plates classic starters like paté, calamars frits, crostini, crevettes, and features the likes of bison tourtierre, boeuf bourguignon, coq au vin, and the best gnocchi in town! But it’s the Prix Fixe four-course for two that’s lured us. It’s stellar - two share a fixed tapas menu for $25.00 each. First: a devastatingly delicious Smoked Salmon Platter. As tender as butter, a hunk of in-house smoked salmon blows us away. Taste accents include capers, red onion, mustard seed, and herby cream. Second: an icy palate cleanser of lime sorbet! Yum! Third: New York steak. Slices of fine beef striploin with dreamy scoops of tempura truffled potatoes and fresh roast vegetables get paired with a creamy Béarnaise. Looking to punch up your Prix Fixe? Flight of wines! Promenade suggests a wine for each course. But glasses remain elegantly handled. A blushy Beringer White Zinfandel from California is joyous with strawberry and melon. And Full Press Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon surprises with high-toned cherry, cassis, and chocolate. Dessert does not disappoint. Chocolate Tart fills buttery crust with smooth chocolate mousse dotted with raspberries. Coffee is also astutely executed. “French Press” gets you a personal carafe, espresso is fine, and an impressive fleet of specialty teas inspire. Take the local spirit home with you! Wholesome jars of Crampton’s Manitoba Maid spreads from Starbuck are available for purchase. (Hint: the marmalade is wonderful - packed with rhubarb, carrots, and oranges.)

Reopened at last! Four years ago everyone flocked to Basil’s. Then, after a disastrous water-main break, Basil’s was no more! Finally Lagopoulos is back - the name’s changed to “Bistrot by Basil,” but the Mediterranean bites, bevies, broken glass tile, and Bosch mural remain (thankfully!) unchanged. Fashioned for “camaraderie over food and wine,” the bistro embraces diners with wood, tile, and modern accents. And to no Saturday night surprise: it’s happily packed. Pre-dinner drinks come classic and with smart ideas. Campari, a cutting-edge aperitif, gets its own cocktail listing. A juicy red “Negroni” stirs up two elegant ounces with gin, vermouth, and orange for sweet n’ peppery sips. Martini to match! The classic is paid homage with plump olives, Bombay gin, and vermouth swirl. “I’m not an expert,” admits my partner, “but this is damn good!” Meanwhile, Tapas flaunt the usual delectables - baked Brie, ceviche, and calamari. Dining with friends? Get the Classic Appetizer Platter; the spreads and breads are fun and filling! Fire Grilled Tiger Prawns see plump charred prawns basted with a buttery marinade of olive, lemon, garlic, and spices. They’re snatched up quick and even spur fights – who will get the last? And flash-fried Zucchini and Eggplant Chips are playful tempura-like bites dipped in cool yogurt garlic dip. But what we miss out in the appetizers gets made up for in the Mains. Bistrot dinners are complete plates! Grilled Wild Salmon is basted in olive oil, garlic, lemon, and herbs, and served with grilled vegetables and supple burnt butter pasta. And Grilled Lamb Loin Chops are perfectly done. Three tender spice-rubbed loin medallions come with grilled vegetables and a requested heap of crisp fries. Uncork a bottle! Alamos is a purpley Argentinian Malbec with jammy floral nose and fig and current palate. Desserts from the case make for tough choices - but the “Chocolate Almond Decadence” is understandably irresistible. This rich two-layer chocolate cake is slathered with orange-accented ganache and topped with almond slivers. Espresso is pulled dark and syrupy, too! Bistrot’s also boasts THE summer patio. Tucked away in an open-air courtyard and filled with garden greenery, this is the ideal escape-from-it-all dining oasis.

Talk of the Town The commanding big-city Lombard Street entrance to this Italian eatery transports you to a time and place of bust and boom, lofty ambition, and classic taste. Indeed! It’s the talk of downtown, luring seas of illustrious visitors and locals alike, and impressing all with soaring ceilings, massive pillars and lighting, and billboard-style artwork. Contemporary interpretations of traditional plates its raison d’être, the bistro’s menu sports a refined line-up of spirits and authentic recipes. With Boa Lounge its neighbour, cocktails are lively. “The Boa” stirs blueberry vodka up with passion fruit, lychee, and bubbly ginger ale. Meanwhile, a classic Mojito comes with Bacardi rum, lime, simple syrup, and soda strained though fresh mint mash. For Antipasti, a cool Caprese Salad files away slices of firm tomatoes, smooth bocconcini, leafy mesclun salad, and basil. Balsamic reduction and olive oil artfully accent. For Primi, creamy golden Seasonal Wild Mushroom & Truffle Risotto is stunning. Earthy mushroom, delicate truffle, and savoury fried leek mingle with the clean taste of roasted Manitoba pickerel. Clearing the palate in prep for Secondi are a Chianti and New York style lager. A rich and silky 2009 Leonardo Chianti flaunts cherry, spice, and a light fruity finish. And Brooklyn Lager refreshes with its Pre-Prohibition-style fizzy hops and firm caramel-y malt. For Secondi, “Boa” attacks again - this time as a thin crust Pizza al Forno. Topped with a smokey and sweet combination of fire-roasted chicken, caramelized onions, zesty pesto, and smoked provolone, this pizza disappears quickly. And who could resist “Forbidden Pasta”? Meaty homemade black squid pasta tangles with chew-worthy squid, bright capers, fresh basil, lemon, and tomato. Chili peppers give kick. Sipping espresso, we finish with two treats. First, we cool off thanks to Black Cherry Gelato with crunchy marble biscotti. Second, the evening’s special - Soft Chocolate Bar - jaw-drops with its brick of smooth chocolate surrounded by fleshy poached cherries, whipped buttermilk, and exotic olive oil drizzle.

Manitoba’s Jackson Springs chosen “Best Tasting Water in the World”! By Dan Proudley
Photography: Mike Sanders
Chris Garrick, owner of Jackson Springs Natural Premium Spring Water, knows that the water his company sells tastes great. After all, his customers have told him that for many years, and besides, the company’s slogan claims it’s “The Best Water You’ll Ever Taste!” But when Jackson Springs Natural Premium Spring Water was chosen at a recent international competition as the best tasting water in the world, it simply confirmed without a doubt what Garrick and so many other people knew all along. In February, the company’s spring water was awarded the prestigious Berkeley Springs International Water Tasting gold medal for 2012. The 22nd annual competition, held in West Virginia, is known as the “Academy Awards” of the bottled water industry. Judges rated each entry on five attributes under guidelines similar to those in wine tasting. The waters were evaluated on taste, texture, clarity, aftertaste (if any), aroma and ability to satisfy thirst. “Customers have told us for years that it’s the best water they have ever tasted,” says Garrick, president of Jackson Springs. “So as a result, we entered this competition. With 30 entries from around the world, our water placed first. There were 11 judges that made that decision and they chose Jackson Springs. So it kind of solidified what customers have told us for years – that Jackson Springs is the best water they’ve ever tasted.” The family-owned Winnipeg company, which gets its water from an artesian spring in southeastern Manitoba, went up against the giants of the industry. Jackson Springs beat out entries from Canada, USA, Europe, Argentina and New Zealand, to name a few. This was no small achievement and the accomplishment has garnered a whirlwind of media attention from news outlets such as CTV National and the local CTV affiliate, Global TV, CBC Radio and the Globe & Mail. “Our phones have been ringing off the hook and our showroom has been busy with new customers,” says Garrick. “When we won, we were hitting the roof. We knew that this would take us to a new level.” “One thing that is unique about our water is the taste,” explains Garrick. “And what makes the taste unique is that it’s natural spring water. The earth’s natural filtration leaves in just the right amount of minerals that gives our water a unique, fresh taste.” “Many people like to use the water for cooking and to give coffee an added boost in flavour.
Former rural residents, now living in Winnipeg, say the taste of Jackson Springs water reminds them of the water they used to drink when they were kids,” says Garrick. “Actually, this is the way water used to be, until pollution, contamination and all different kinds of chemicals entered the waterways.” In addition to the great taste, Garrick likes to point out the health benefits of drinking mineral water. Jackson Springs is chemical and additive-free, and contains minerals recommended by health experts. Plus, it’s sodium and fluoride-free. “People are often looking for different natural products,” says Garrick. What makes our water special is where it comes from. Our spring water is from deep beneath the earth’s surface in the pristine Sandilands Provincial Forest (near Middlebro, MB).” Jackson Springs’ water originates from an artesian well situated on 40 acres of companyowned land that is remote and isolated. The area is one of the highest elevations in Manitoba, nestled in the middle of three provincial forests. There’s no agricultural activity and very little population in the area. “Our test results show you can drink our water right from the source,” says Garrick. “That is so phenomenal.”
Less than two percent of the world’s water supply is drinkable without first treating it for bacteria. The natural spring water is available in environmentally friendly three and five-gallon refillable containers for home and office coolers. The company offers full delivery service throughout Winnipeg and surrounding bedroom communities. Rural distributors are located to service Selkirk, Steinbach, Winkler, Morden, Carmen, Morris, and the Pilot Mound and Killarney areas. Besides offering a full line of water coolers, Jackson Springs has introduced a carbonation unit that produces sparkling water. By simply adding some ice, and lemon or lime, people can enjoy a delightful and refreshing drink, notes Garrick. Also available are attractive stainless steel carafes engraved with the company name. The elegant serving containers are a popular choice with the company’s restaurant customers. Garrick founded Jackson Springs in 2004. But it was a turn of fate that brought him to the business. “I wasn’t looking to get into the water business,” says Garrick. When he and his wife Laryssa SemchyshynGarrick decided to start a family, they became more health conscious. They discovered that many bottled waters were nothing more than filtered city tap water, processed to remove chemicals. So the couple, both former competitive bodybuilders, began a hunt for high quality water. Once Garrick discovered a healthy water source, he was so impressed by it that he purchased the source and named the company after his son, Jackson. Today, Jackson Springs, located at 885 Keewatin St, has eight employees and posts annual sales of more than $1 million. The thriving business has more than 4,000 residential and small business customers. “We have an extremely high rate of customer loyalty,” notes Garrick. “And that’s because of the product. Our customer retention rate is through the roof.” Garrick is extremely proud of his company and what its employees have achieved. He says he is grateful to his customers, employees and suppliers “who contributed to our victory” in earning the title as the world’s best tasting water.
Rigorous standards ensure consumers receive high quality water As president of Jackson Springs Natural Premium Spring Water, Chris Garrick doesn’t believe in taking any shortcuts whatsoever. In

fact, he is uncompromising in his efforts to ensure his customers receive the highest quality of water possible. “I am selling you water as if my own son is drinking from that water jug,” says Garrick. Jackson Springs, a family-owned business, controls everything about the water they sell, from the ground to your kitchen table. “We do not cut corners,” adds Vice President Laryssa Semchyshyn-Garrick. “We own the award-winning water source, the stainless steel tanker that transports the water, the state-of-the-art processing plant, and the brand name, Jackson Springs™. “Our spring water is transported by a specially trained and certified driver in our 36,000-litre stainless steel tanker two to three times per week. Our natural spring water is always fresh,” says Garrick. “If you receive water today, it was likely bottled yesterday.” Overseeing operations at the bottling facility is plant manager Dennis Leblanc, who is a certified water expert with 15 years experience in the business. “He is one of the best people in the industry,” says Garrick.
Chemical-free process Although the spring water is safe to drink directly from the source, it is nevertheless treated naturally to ensure that it is. Initially, the water is exposed to ultraviolet light and then treated with ozone. Ozone is the most powerful and safest water sanitizer on the market today. “Ozone is electrically charged oxygen,” explains Garrick. “It is nature’s disinfectant.” These two processes ensure the water is 100 percent safe, but does not remove the essential minerals. Jackson Springs water is tested in-house and also at an independent laboratory. Processing of the refillable water bottles is also a stringent procedure. The three and fivegallon water jugs are repeatedly inspected, and if they fail to meet standards that even include aesthetic appearance, they are recycled. Bottles passing inspection are washed and sterilized using environmentally friendly solutions. No bleaches or aggressive solutions are used. Garrick is so particular about the quality of his product that he won’t accept competitor’s jugs. “It’s unfortunate that some companies do not even sterilize their jugs or do it properly,” says Garrick. “We take great pride in the cleanliness of our facility. We won’t sell you a jug that we would not drink out of ourselves.” And finally, the water is ready for distribution. “We deliver six days a week throughout the city and surrounding bedroom communities on a call today, deliver tomorrow basis,“ explains Garrick. “Customers simply leave out their empties, and full ones are left in their place for when they get home. We also have distributors in Selkirk, Pilot Mound and in the Winkler / Morden areas of the province.”
Health Expert recommends Natural Spring Water with Minerals Hello and best wishes Chris and the Jackson Springs family, Congratulations on receiving your award for the best tasting water in the world. It is always very gratifying to know that what a person chooses to put inside their body is considered by world experts to be the “Best in the World.” Thank you for providing us with such an excellent product. I thank you for giving me a tour of your facility a few years ago when I was looking for the best water available in Winnipeg for me, my family and clients. I was thoroughly impressed with your attention to every detail, right from your source in Middlebro to your quality assurance procedures, maintenance, cleanliness and your expertise. The fact that your water contains trace amounts of minerals with no fluoride or sodium, is free of contaminants, is an alkaline pH and consistently tastes wonderful is extremely important when choosing water to enjoy on a regular daily basis. The decision to use and recommend Jackson Springs water was, simply put, a “no-brainer.” Many of my clients and family now enjoy Jackson Springs water, not just because it tastes great, but because it has helped them feel better in many ways, especially for assisting their bodies with a variety of aches, pains and digestive complaints. We all need to enjoy an adequate supply of pure water on a regular daily basis for hydration to allow every single cell, tissue, organ and system to function at optimal levels, and for internal body cleansing and detoxification. Pure, natural spring water should be our main source of healthy liquid intake each and every day. In my humble opinion, after many years of research, Jackson Springs water is the best product available for regular daily consumption to achieve the best results. My family and I wish you continued success. Best regards, E. Allan Bailey B.Sc. Phm./Master Herbalist

Bookshelf Dating: A Novel (Turnstone) by Dave Williamson
Jenkins is a retired widower, contentedly living alone in his Fort Richmond house after the death of his wife of half a century. But it’s been a couple of years since her passing, and he thinks maybe it’s time to re-enter the dating game. It’s still the same old birds and bees, right? Jenkins plunges in. Meeting up with an old flame, cozying up with one or two free-spirited divorcees, contending with nosy friends and his well-meaning children, among other things, Jenkins thinks way back to his original courtship days and realizes, man, how things have changed! No more “heavy petting” or “bingo dances.” And whatever happened to dating, anyway? Dave Williamson has written a funny, sweet and sexy novel that proves that an old dog can learn some new tricks.
Not Being on a Boat (Freehand) by Esme Clark Keith
Winnipeg’s Esme Clark Keith has come up with a deliciously black comic novel about a luxury cruise gone disastrously, hilariously wrong. Rutledge is a man who knows what he wants, and how much he has to pay for it. Alone in the world, he signs up for a trip of a lifetime, with people just like him. But the day trips disappoint, other passengers go missing, the crew is losing their cool, and Rutledge is unimpressed. Even Raoul, his promising young cabin boy, fails to deliver. Rutledge and Raoul make a fine team when things really start going aground in this biting, brilliant parody of the all-inclusive lifestyle - proof that worse things can happen on a trip than lost luggage. Recent winner of the McNally Robinson Book of the Year.
The Girl in the Wall (Signature) by Alison Preston
Another recent Manitoba Book Award winner, the Margaret Laurence Award for Fiction. After leaving the Winnipeg Police Force, Frank Foote started a new career in home renovations in his Norwood Flats neighbourhood. But tearing down some old drywall, Frank makes a grisly discovery: the skeleton of a young girl. Frank can’t leave his old profession behind, so he starts tinkering with evidence and snooping around, asking questions. He remembers someone from his childhood, Mrs. Mortimer, an odd woman with a peculiar profession: taking photographs of the recently deceased for their families. She seemed like a harmless thing, though, so she couldn’t be involved, could she? Alison Preston continues her mystery series, where even the most pleasant parts of town can have grisly secrets.

Michael Kiwanuka Home Again (Polydor/Universal) A treacherous business, nostalgia. Those allusions to better times may help the marketers sell respite to the alienated, but they may well smother creativity in weaker spirits. Young English singer-guitarist Michael Kiwanuka is the latest old soul, if you will, but his debut moves forward. In the acoustic intimacy, loose-limbed rhythm and nods to jazz and gospel, he’s tapped the essence of sympathetic records made 40 years ago – Moondance most prominently, although he sounds nothing at all like Van Morrison. Kiwanuka’s voice is worn but welcome, with more than an allusion to gospel hope and endurance in the slow-rolling “Bones” and “I’ll Get Along,” and the deep “I Won’t Lie.” As a guitarist he’s adroit and economical; producer Paul Butler respects that by keeping the stage open and airy, but flavours of saxophones, flute and violin add tang without distraction. Kate Bush 50 Words for Snow (Fish People/EMI) The astounding arrival of new music from the reticent Kate Bush so soon after last year’s silence-breaking reappraisal, The Director’s Cut, warranted a respectful delay in these pages, which is why songs about snow are reviewed out of season. No matter. 50 Words for Snow is an astonishing turn for Bush, yet also a deeply gorgeous set in its own right. In music that unveils its secrets slowly over long, unhurried tracks, with the singer’s confident piano playing more to the fore than ever, she animates the life of a snowflake, tracks a Yeti and makes love with a snowman. Any fears of thematic chill or hermetic bemusement are warmed by the fiercely playful glow of her ideas, and her unflinching commitment to bring them to life in song. So, in “Snowed in at Wheeler Street,” a story of lovers reunited and torn apart again and again over the centuries becomes a heart-wrenching duet, where Bush and Elton John reach astonishing heights.

Erasure Tomorrow’s World (Mute/EMI) Once their run of glamorous electro-pop hits was unplugged several years ago, Erasure’s Andy Bell and Vince Clarke stretched as creative men unburdened – looking beyond their songwriting partnership for Other People’s Songs, or meticulously rebuilding their own with acoustic instruments for Union Street. Since then, they’ve returned to form, more measured but undimmed, dignity intact, their sixth sense for hooks inarguable with the first single, the surging “Fill Us with Fire.” “When I Start to (Break it all Down)” has Bell singing for his life over Clarke’s well-drilled synthesizers, on the edge and loving it. With the standard edition closing at a lean 32 minutes, you’re smarter to plump for the deluxe package, which adds a 37-minute disc of mixes and alternate versions. summer 2012 | STYLE MANITOBA | 37

“Why?” The most overrated question By Mathilda Waters
According to our expert on well-being, Dr. Darek Dawda of DAVDA Psychology,* asking why may be less important then you think. MW: When we talked today, you said that “Why am I feeling this way?” is the most overrated question. Why? Dr. DD: Because looking too hard for reasons for your suffering might distract you from the more important task, which is to do what you need to do to get better. Instead of asking, “Why I am feeling this way?” it’s often better to ask, “What is it I need to do to get better?” MW: So just do it? Dr. DD: I am not a big Nike fan, but I do think their slogan is one of the best pieces of psychological advice you can get. MW: But how can you know what to do if you don’t know why you’re feeling the way you are in the first place? Dr. DD: There are some universal things you can do to feel better, no matter what the origins of your emotional problems are. Try, on a regular basis, to be physically active, reduce stress and increase pleasure in your life, eat healthy, laugh, connect with good people, sleep well, express yourself creatively, and so on, and you will likely find yourself feeling better. MW: That’s a lot to do! Dr. DD: Yes, developing healthy living habits might take more effort than obsessing about the reasons for your unhappiness. But the effort will be greatly rewarded, while a lack of it will likely perpetuate unhappiness.
2. Be physically active for at least one hour every day for a period of one month. For an hour every day, do something that will increase your heart rate and breathing. Remember to start slow and increase the intensity gradually, and don’t do activities that might hurt you. 3. Rate your average emotional well being after one month of being physically active on a regular basis. 4. Send Style Manitoba an email about your results. (info@stylemanitoba.com) MW: Results guaranteed? Dr. DD: Nothing in life is guaranteed. But being consistently physically active is one of the most effective ways of improving your emotional well-being. MW: Should one then just forget the question “Why?” Dr. DD: Not at all. Just don’t let the quest for insight impede your actions. Understanding yourself can, of course, be very useful. It can provide you with a clearer sense of what you need to do to be well. You need to keep in mind though that the way you feel is affected by many complex variables, and so the quest for self-understanding is really a never-ending pursuit. You also need to keep in mind that there are a lot of ideologies out there that will try to convince you that they have the true answers that will end your suffering. It’s worth striving to learn how to think for yourself.
MW: Where should one start? Dr. DD: OK, how about a simple challenge for those of you readers who would like to take one on. Here’s how you can demonstrate to yourself the power of positive action: 1. Rate your average recent emotional well being on a scale from 0 to 10.

One Amazing Neighbour: North Dakota by Ian Mozdzen We often overlook what’s right in front of us. And boy, we miss out! On the life and lore that shapes the world around us. Case in point: North Dakota, our legendary southern neighbour. You may not realize it - but whether you’re attracted to amazing places, cultural riches, adventure, or agriculture, North Dakota’s got something at every turn for everyone. Amazing Places North Dakota’s not only America’s friendliest state, but also the most peaceful. Along the border is a symbol of peace and friendship The International Peace Garden. This botanical garden features an interpretive centre, conservatory, reflecting pools, and dazzling floral displays. But when we think North Dakota, we think Badlands. For good reason! It’s a mysterious
and beautiful place: broken country, ancient riverbeds, carved rock, native plants, hearty wildlife, and miles of hiking and horseback trails. No wonder Theodore Roosevelt National Park is the state’s top attraction. The park boasts scenic drives, historic cattle ranches, and Medora - a real “Wild West” town. In Medora, see Medora Musical, a popular high-energy production with variety acts, fireworks bonanza, and live horses (Jun 8-Sept 8). Nearby, step back into time at Chateau de Mores, a 1880s home owned by the aristocratic de Mores family. And golfing’s never better than at Bully Pulpit Golf Course. For grub, Pitchfork Steak Fondue is a hum-dinger. Steaks get pitchforked, fondued western style, then served up loaded. From a distance, breathtaking views of the Badlands and Lake Sakakawea are found at spots like Crow Flies High Butte. And Little Missouri State Park awes with expanses of rugged trail country. Meanwhile, survival skills get taught at Knife River Indian Villages National Historic Site - preserving remnants of Plains Indians who lived in riverside earth lodges. Hands-on History Dakota territory was first explored in the 1700s by Sieur de la Verendrye, and then in the early 1800s by frontiersmen Meriwether Lewis and William Clark with the assistance of native guide Sakakawea.

Living Your Life, Your Way
By Kelly Gray Photography: John Johnston
Local seniors are enjoying life just the way they like it at Revera – The Portsmouth. Each and every day, residents get to experience the joy of spending time with friends in a warm community of dynamic, like-minded seniors. Located amidst the leafy streets of Tuxedo in the city’s south end, The Portsmouth is a 120suite top tier retirement community that is described as elegant yet informal and vibrant yet relaxed. Affordable accommodation, combined with thoughtful touches such as ample suites and a wealth of amenities, including the latest fitness equipment, a hair salon and well-designed entertainment areas have many active seniors wondering why they waited so long to make the switch to the comforts of all-inclusive living. The residential setting is what distinguishes The Portsmouth from other independent living options in the city, of which most are located on busy thoroughfares. Services such as restaurants, grocery and public transit are conveniently close by, but street noise is kept at a distance by large single-family homes, winding street design and substantial greenery. “The lovely residential setting adds to the calm and pleasant environment we enjoy here,” says Executive Director Jennifer Gray, a professional who comes to the retirement industry from one of Canada’s leading luxury hotel brands. “There are no horns honking or traffic speeding past our windows. When surveyed, most residents indicate location was a leading factor in selecting The Portsmouth as their chosen home. When you sit outside on one of the benches surrounding the property, you can actually hear the wind and birds in the trees.” She remarks that the setting is just a starting point. Inside, residents enjoy a strong spirit of community that is bolstered by a 37-member staff contingent. “We have morning aerobics,
Zumba and Pilates sessions, as well as things like urban poling, an activity we plan to expand this year,” says Gray. She adds that it all starts with a ‘getting to know you’ survey that assists staff like the Recreation Director with ideas on how a resident might want to tailor their daily activities. “Everything is up to the resident. We make suggestions, but we are here as facilitators. It’s all part of the easy living solution we offer at The Portsmouth.” When it comes to dining, the bar is kept high. Part of the accommodations package includes well-considered lunch and dinner menu options served in the 100-seat dining room. The menu is set each week by the Executive Chef, but Gray notes that it is the culinary team’s ability to go above and beyond that makes them so popular. “What makes us so popular is our flexibility. Residents let us know of their dietary require-
ments or meal preferences and we work to accommodate. If you have a need for a low sodium or low glucose menu, we are happy to create something tasty and to your specific needs. If the menu of the day is not to your taste, we are happy to offer alternatives. The fact that we are part of Revera, one of North America’s largest providers of independent living options, means we have a wealth of experience at our disposal. We understand seniors and this helps us build positive relationships. For us, it is these relationships that form the cornerstones of our community and make The Portsmouth so much more than a collection of suites.” Recently, many of these suites have undergone renovations, highlighting beautiful, neutral and modern décor. Gray reports that the residence offers 91 one-bedroom and 25 two-bedroom suites, as well as four studio apartments. She comments that renovations are a continuing factor in residential management. “Suites must be kept up to the latest décor. We always want to offer a warm but fresh look. I believe residents and prospective residents hold us to a higher standard and we strive to never disappoint.” The combination of elegant, contemporary décor, bright sunny interiors and amenities work together in offering an environment that is both sophisticated and inviting. The goal at The Portsmouth is to create a setting where the services and support offered by the residence allow residents to pursue their personal interests, foster new friendships and live life to the fullest. “This is home to a friendly, dedicated community and friends are welcome to drop in and see for themselves why Revera is a top choice for seniors in the community,” she says, inviting Winnipeggers to visit The Portsmouth at 125 Portsmouth Boulevard.

Residents of River Ridge Retirement Residence experience an independent, healthy lifestyle. Whether it’s taking in a movie, joining a fitness class, enjoying a fine meal while observing the spectacular river view or strolling along a scenic landscaped pathway, River Ridge Retirement Residence offers residents a balance of health, social enjoyment and active living. The new, soon-to-be open senior living complex, set on the banks of Winnipeg’s historic Red River, continues with All Seniors Care mandate of promoting a well-rounded lifestyle for all their residents. With any dwelling comfort is of the utmost importance. Created in a thoughtfully designed, contemporary style, River Ridge’s 173 firstclass accommodations come in a variety of one or two bedroom suite layouts, each equipped with a four-piece bathroom, kitchenette and choice of balcony or patio. The suites also offer state-of-the-art safety features, including an emergency call system, sprinklers and smoke
detectors, and bathroom grab rails. For added peace of mind there is 24-hour onsite staff, including an in-house nurse. Outside of the suites residents can choose from a multitude of activities, events and accommodations to maintain an active, sociable lifestyle. Beautiful common areas, complete with fireplace, main floor bistro coffee lounge and a non-denominational chapel all promote an environment that fosters community, while the movie theatre, spa/salon, billiards/games room and multi-purpose hobby and craft centre allow residents to enjoy the pleasures of life. The complex’s Director of Health and Wellness oversees daily activities, such as exercise classes in the fitness centre, and also ensures residents have access to additional social, cultural and recreational programs inside and outside of River Ridge. Shuttle bus services are available to take residents to doctor’s visits, shopping trips and outings to local amenities such as Seven Oaks Health Centre, Kildonan Golf Course and various religious/spiritual centres. Private car usage is also available for outings and appointments.
While the view may be a feast for the eyes, the food is just as tantalizing. The on-site Red Seal certified chef and culinary team carefully plan meals to ensure residents enjoy delicious, nutritionally balanced meals, which can range from a Monte Cristo sandwich for lunch to a pan fried trout with lemon sauce and steamed butter green beans for dinner, topped off with a glass of wine from the complex’s extensive selection. Private dining for family visits is also available with the same delightful menu. Heather Mutcheson, vice president of Manitoba operations with All Seniors Care, states leasing is already well beyond the expected rate, and display suites will open to the public in June, with residents moving in to their new life in September.
With all of River Ridges’ available amenities, none is as spectacular as the resident dining room, which boasts a sweeping view of the Red River. “You’re not going to find a better view at any restaurant is the city,” states Avril Kettner, marketing director for All Seniors Care.

Homegrown lifestyle For over a decade, Homestead Manitoba has focused on sensitive community development for independent seniors, as demonstrated in their five assisted-living residences located in all corners of Winnipeg. Now, that commitment has extended southward to the town of Morden with Homestead South. Set to welcome its first tenants this summer, the response to Homestead South from the surrounding community “has been wonderful,” says Rya Janzen, Homestead Manitoba’s Marketing Director. “People are excited about the concept, the local employment opportunities it offers, and the fact that seniors

from Morden and across the Pembina Valley can continue to live in the region where they have worked and raised their families.”
Other perks at Homestead South will include weekly light housekeeping, as well as daily garbage collection and complimentary laundry facilities on each floor.
Located in the Pembina Connection Development Area in the east end of Morden, the 82-suite Homestead South is modeled after Homestead Manitoba’s other assisted-living residences. The one and two-bedroom suites come in four different floor plans, with each suite ranging in size from approximately 600 to 900 square feet.
Maintenance staff will ensure the building and grounds are well looked after, with snow removal and de-icing of the large parking lot a priority. A library, hair salon and banking services will be conveniently available onsite, and residents can reserve a private suite for their out-of-town guests.
The bright, cheerful suites will be wheelchair and walker accessible, feature individually controlled heat and air conditioning, a large in-suite storage room and a kitchen equipped with a full fridge and stove. Large glassed-in balconies will give residents a clear view of the surrounding fields and greenery, and provide an outdoor space to relax.
A full slate of activities tailored to their interests will keep residents active and socially connected. Activities may include weekly exercise classes conducted by certified instructors, bingo, theme dinners, and card games offered in the multi-purpose room. Shuttle excursions will take residents to nearby shopping and various events.
Residents will be encouraged to personalize their spaces to build towards the huge sense of pride and ownership that are the hallmarks of other Homestead Manitoba properties. When it comes to dining, residents will enjoy fresh, balanced and nutritious meals in the informal comfort of the central dining room, where brunch and a three-course dinner will be served daily by friendly and attentive staff. With all meals prepared from scratch onsite, the professional kitchen staff can accommodate dietary restrictions and allergies. A private dining room is available for residents to host gatherings of family and friends. Catering can be arranged for these special events. summer 2012 | STYLE MANITOBA | 57
“We want to create a relationship with our tenants from the start,” says Janzen. “People like that our on-site manager and activities coordinator will be there for them through the process, when they move in and beyond. Having someone there who they know and trust makes a huge difference in the transition.”
Nurturing relationships In Winnipeg, Homestead Manitoba’s relationship-centred approach is certainly working for tenants of Homestead Manitoba’s assisted-living Devonshire House I and II complex located between East Kildonan and Transcona in the new Genstar “Kildonan Green” development. “Since so many of our residents at Devonshire I and II have such strong ties to Transcona, we’re planning activities in our buildings to coincide with Transcona’s 100 year anniversary celebrations in 2012,” Janzen says. “Homestead South is a brand new idea in a rural community and a learning curve for us,” Janzen notes. “Every community will be different so we’re going to take the time to understand our residents’ needs and adapt our programs accordingly. We will learn and grow with them.” The display suites located at 400 Loren Drive in Morden are now open and Homestead South employees are helping interested clients and their families learn more.
Kildonan Green Apartments offer an independent living option, so if their needs change down the road, Kildonan Green tenants can simply move across the parking lot into the facilities of Devonshire House I and II. “Kildonan Green has about five suites left, Devonshire I is full, and Devonshire II is almost 60 percent full,” Janzen says. Display suites and tours are available any time at Devonshire House I and II, as well as at Homestead Manitoba’s other Winnipeg assisted-living residences: Kildonan House in North Kildonan, Sterling House in Lindenwoods and Dakota House in St. Vital. For more information, visit www.homesteadmanitoba.ca
And with a new Sobey’s and a retail space opening next year, right next door, Devonshire I and II are perfectly situated for easy access to pharmacy, grocery and other services yet to come. The Devonshire complex also encompasses the new Kildonan Green Apartments, an alternative option for the active 55+ tenant who is ready to downsize.

Suite Location By Kelly Gray The realtor’s mantra - location, location, location – is one that aptly describes 71 Roslyn Road in Winnipeg’s Osborne Village. A new condo project created by Sunrex, a Winnipeg property development leader, Penthouse Towers at 71 Roslyn Road offers 99 totally renovated suites in various formats designed for gracious urban living.

As well, the building is situated on the leafy banks of the Assiniboine River directly across from the majestic Legislative Building, a prospect that lends itself to awe-inspiring views. The neighbourhood itself is home to 8,000 residents who live in a gifted urban environment of just
230 acres that house the city’s best stock of independent retailers, restaurants and bars that work together to offer one of Winnipeg’s liveliest street scenes. In terms of construction, 71 Roslyn was built battleship tough with original contractors using poured concrete to create the main frame. As such, Penthouse Towers has weathered the

Halter East years well, making it a perfect candidate for an upgrade to condominiums. Still, Sunrex turned to its breadth of experience and decided to put significant renovations into the project to give its buyers a solid investment to call home. For example, Guicheret reports that buyers will find major infrastructure upgrades such as a modern roof, boilers, and windows.

Sunrex turned to Altima Cabinets for the new kitchen cabinetry installations. What buyers will now find are gorgeous kitchens filled with made to order high quality cabinets that feature things like metal drawer slides and a clean contemporary appearance. Four brand new stainless steel appliances, new sinks, taps, and ceramic tile package complete the kitchen renovation. Garry Hirsch adds that the upgrades continue throughout the suites. He notes that in the bath, Sunrex decided to completely redo rather
than just give it the lipstick and rouge treatment. “With many properties, owners might recondition the bathtub and refresh with a bit of paint. At Penthouse Towers, the old tubs were pulled and 20-inch soakers were installed. The taps are all new and even the shutoff values have been changed over.” To help the fresh appearance stand out even more, the interior designers elected to go with new lighting. Here, Robinson Lighting worked with the design team to come forward with a full selection of new fixtures for each of the 99 suites. Robinson Lighting is Winnipeg’s best-known lighting supplier with years of experience in both residential and commercial applications. They were able to source products from Canadian suppliers that meant quick delivery times to Sunrex and no stock shortages, important aspects when construction timelines are tight. On the floor, new carpets and laminates were installed to complete the décor package. Sunrex turned again to a well-known Winnipeg supplier for their expertise and quality lines. Curtis Carpets’ commercial division has worked on a number of Sunrex properties, and as such, they understand the company’s need for quality solutions in a residential redevelopment. Curtis provided a mid-weight carpet over top of heavy-duty underlay at 71 Roslyn, as well as laminates and vinyls throughout. The upgrades go still further, says Darren Guicheret. He points to the elevators and security systems as yet another case in point. He remarks that some projects might have seen the need to only replace buttons on the elevator control panel and refresh the cage. At 71 Roslyn, Sunrex decided to completely refurbish the elevators in a move that will certainly save condo owners big dollars down

he states, adding that the demographic of the building is largely 25 to 45 year old professionals and double income families with a smattering of empty nesters. Now, Hirsch and Guicheret are turning their attention to the six exclusive penthouse suites on the building’s top floor. These are approximately 1300 to 1800 sq. feet in two-bedroom plus configurations. “We’ve saved the best for last,” says Guicheret. “These suites offer it all from a perch atop the building that delivers sweeping views through expansive use of windows. Each suite is unique and each comes at a surprising price point between $289,900 and $369,900.” the road. The building also boasts a state-ofthe art security monitoring and alarm system to make the building even more of a haven for residents. “Sunrex is without question one of Winnipeg’s most experienced companies when it comes to property redevelopment. They see the bigger picture and have the experience to take care of the little details that can make or break a buyer’s level of satisfaction,” says Hirsch. Speaking of satisfaction, Penthouse Towers’ suites are even being bought up by those who were previously tenants. “I’ve sold condos for 30 years and I’ve never seen this level of support for a project from those who were renters,”
Hirsch and Guicheret suggest that now is the time to consider the move to the Village and 71 Roslyn Road. Whether it’s the stunning views and riverside address that attracts or the value consideration of a condo where all the expensive details like boilers and roofing have been updated, or the tasteful interior décor package, Penthouse Towers is a residence with all boxes ticked. “The facts speak for themselves, and to date, many people are agreeing,” says Hirsch, inviting those interested in quality and location at an affordable price to make the call to get in on the last remaining suites. Extended Living
Adding a sunroom lets you enjoy an outdoor lifestyle a little longer. By Carly Peters
In Manitoba we know all too well how fast the warm months can slip by (not to mention much of that time is spent avoiding the hum of mosquitos). But an outdoor lifestyle doesn’t have to disappear when the first snowflake flies. Sunrooms can bring you out into nature even on some of Winnipeg’s colder winter days. Steve Sarens of Sunshade Products Ltd. has been installing these “home extensions” for over 35 years, and says they have become a popular addition to new and existing homes. “When we started our family business in the 1970s, decks and outdoor living was an afterthought. Today, the outdoor lifestyle with anything that appears in the home moving outside, has people seeing the benefit of a room like this,” he says. “First and foremost, the benefit of a threeseason sunroom is just that, being able to enjoy an outdoor enclosed space almost all year round. We tell people that on average, sunrooms users can enjoy their room on a -10 to -15 day, with no additional heat and still be comfortable. Yet, we tend to undersell the sunrooms capabilities,” states Sarens. “We’ve seen a south facing sunroom on a -31 day still be +5 inside with no heat,” he explains.
“On one sunny day with a -47 wind chill, it was only -1 inside.” Exposure is certainly something one should consider when planning a sunroom explains Sarens. He also points to lifestyle, family size, room usage and house constraints as other considerations when choosing size and placement. “If there is a deck in place already you are constrained by the space,” he states. But, Sunshade Products Ltd. can usually add to existing structures. The best-case scenario is to start from scratch in order to achieve exactly what the client wants.
“The weather patterns have changed over the years and we have changed with it. So if you’ve bought from somewhere else where they don’t have the same weather, it might not be the best fit,” he explains. “We are doing constant research and development to our systems and react to change when needed.” Sunshade Products Ltd. recently received their 25-year membership certificate from the Better Business Bureau, along with the recognition that during their time with the Bureau not one complaint was brought against the company, highlighting the company’s high customer satisfaction.
Utilizing concrete pads and teleposts (instead of piles) the company’s Glastar Sunroom System offers a unique “floatation” design to ensure when the soil moves (which does happen in Manitoba) that the structure can compensate for this movement. Developed in Manitoba, the system allows panels to float independently of the main structure preventing damage to the sunroom and the house. This innovation and all their actual products are made in Manitoba, a benefit to users since the makers understand the province’s weather.

Sun Worshiping Make your summer a little brighter, and a lot cooler with a sunroom from Sky Brite System. Inspired by the greenhouse industry, Sky Brite System’s roof is constructed from acrylic panels manufactured in Germany, and come with a 30year guarantee to not break down, yellow or fade with the sun’s rays. And, unlike a traditional sunroom, Sky Brite System’s roof allows 50 percent of the natural light through, while blocking 100 per cent of UV rays and reducing heat by 75 per cent. The result is a bright, outdoor space that even spills into the rest of the home. “We’ve had customers say their houses are brighter inside because they don’t need to close the blinds to block the heat,” says Alex Ravensbergen of Sky Brite Systems. Constructed from acrylic panels, the systems are fully customizable, from colours to function.
Customers can opt for an openconcept cathedral roof, screened in sides, or a fully enclosed framework. The company’s newest offering is a tempered glass sliding wall system that allows customers to fold back a sizable wall into
a small accordion, opening the structure up to the outdoors.
Sport Base is a concrete alternative made of 100% recycled material that was designed for use under a Game Court system. Because it can be installed over compacted crushed limestone, this eliminates the need for a concrete base,
making it a great option for a do-ityourselfer. A permeable product, Sport Base increases the shock absorption quality of the Game Court installed over top.
The acrylic panels and selected siding are mounted to a maintenance-free aluminum frame featuring baked-on paint
that comes with a 10-warranty not to chip, peel or fade. The main structure can easily be built on a stable patio or directly onto a slab within a day, so customers will not have to wait to enjoy their outdoor living.
Get your game on Imagine being able to enjoy a pickup game of basketball, badminton, tennis, volleyball and other sports on your own outdoor games court! Thanks to Athletic Flooring Systems, the exclusive dealer of the authentic Sport Court® flooring, fitness and fun is as close as your own backyard. Engineered for safety, quality, versatility, visual appeal, longevity and no maintenance requirements, customizable Game Courts are designed for multi-sport use. In fact, these unique outdoor courts can be flooded and used in the winter as a skating rink. Now, thanks to a new product by Sport Court® called Sport Base, “we can install Game Courts in harder to reach places,” says Gary Weinberg, owner of Athletic Flooring Systems.
Since Game Court and Sport Base are modular systems, they can be taken with the homeowner if they move – making them a worthwhile investment in your family’s property, health and lifestyle.

Award-winning vision By Leigh Patterson
Combining creative solutions with thoughtful design, and then implementing beautiful and functional outdoor spaces are the hallmarks of a successful landscaper. Such is the case for 3 Seasons Landscaping, celebrating 30 years of delivering awardwinning landscaping for happy clients throughout Winnipeg. “We’re able to handle nearly any landscaping project, large and small,” says 3 Seasons Landscaping owner Gary Weinberg. “If it isn’t within the realm of what we normally do, we also act as project managers, tap into local talent and products, and take care of the details on behalf of our clients. We are a onestop shop.” The company has garnered a number of Landscape Manitoba’s Awards of Excellence over the years, including this sampling of large and small Winnipeg properties. Tuxedo “Wow” factor 3 Seasons Landscaping designed and completely rebuilt a Tuxedo yard from the ground up, leaving only a few mature trees in place to accommodate an artful blend of striking components: water features, sculptures, seating areas, pathways, an outdoor game court and mass perennial plantings. A study in harmony and balance, a rectangular flagstone walkway flanked with copper torches guides visitors to a custom-made Asian-inspired wood and copper-domed gazebo, which shades
68 | STYLE MANITOBA | summer 2012
the seating area. The path also forms a bridge to cross over the modernist-style pond, accented by a copper water-wall and sculpture. Tall shade-loving perennials as well as burgundy-red and orange coleus, hostas and lilies were planted en masse to achieve a full, lush effect. Crowning achievement in Royalwood A show stopping waterfall feature, numerous different entertaining areas and extensive perennial beds are among the highlights of a Royalwood dreamscape. In the waterfall feature, water rushes over massive black granite boulders, down into a pond, then drops again to travel along the 50-foot stream along the perimeter fence line, before ending in a large pond at the rear of the property. Water recycles back up and the process begins again. “The sound of falling water resonates throughout the entire yard,” Weinberg says. A variety of mature trees and perennials were planted into the wide, undulating beds of black crushed granite. Different textures and colours are revealed as the gardens transform throughout the seasons. While the property’s gardens are extensive, the yard was ultimately designed for entertaining. A curving, custom designed pergola encloses a one-of-a-kind outdoor kitchen stocked with culinary toys. Small space comes alive in Charleswood Small yards have their charms too, and a good
landscaper will work with these spaces to create the most functional and pleasing area possible. The homeowners of an elegant Charleswood residence backing onto a forest preserve requested a maintenance-free yard with simple, natural looking plantings. 3 Seasons Landscaping developed a multitiered patio featuring large comfortable landings built out of Barkman Roman Pisa and Dynasty pavers. A Roman stack stone wall separates the courtyard from the expansive existing yard. A simple, organic water feature further enhances the desired tranquility of the space. In keeping with the geometric layout, mass linear plantings including “Karl Foerster”
feather reed grass and yellow-plumed “Rocket” ligularia, provide a smooth transition to the forest preserve. Invitation to relax in River Heights Another small yard, this one in River Heights, has also benefited from 3 Seasons Landscaping expertise. In this complete backyard renovation, Weinberg and his expert team came up with a design to resolve drainage issues and rejuvenate at the same time. Now graced with a pergola, fencing, paving stone walkway and sitting area, and accented by a variety of perennials such as lilies, it is now “an outdoor extension of the home and is a private, inviting area to be enjoyed,” says Weinberg. “We work closely with our clients to create a vision for their yard and bring it to reality.”

Style and ambience Adding ambience to a yard without sacrificing style is a breeze thanks to these three sophisticated pieces from Classic Fireplaces. A tall, brushed stainless steel and glass indoor/ outdoor water feature delivers the “wow factor.” This freestanding sculptural piece is a “nice feature for any entranceway, patio or deck,” says Classic Fireplaces co-owner Helen Peters. With its slim profile, it would also work well as a room divider. A submerged pump recirculates water, which cascades over a glass panel to provide natural soothing sound. If used indoors, the waterfall adds humidity to the air for a comfortable home environment. The waterfall can be illuminated at night and enjoyed well into the evening hours. In addition to this beauty, Classic Fireplaces carries built-in waterfalls at its St. Boniface store. Fuelled by propane or natural gas, the linear and circular style patioflames add warmth and light to cool nights. With its pewter-like finish and modern design the linear patioflame displays an impressive

ribbon of flame to spark conversation and warm outdoor seating areas. The circular patioflame features a handsome stainless steel body and granite-like top that can be customized with decorative glass, river rocks or logs.
In addition to patioflames, Classic Fireplaces extends our too-short Manitoba summers with a range of patio heaters, umbrella heaters and outdoor fireplaces.
Personal Perfection When it comes to comfort, one size doesn’t fit all. Family-owned Bullfrog Spas of Winnipeg is the only retailer to offer Bullfrog Spas, a highly customizable relaxation experience. Recently voted the winner of the About. com Reader’s Choice Award for Best Hot Tub/Spa 2012, Bullfrog Spas are the world’s only hot tubs equipped with the patented JetPak® System. With over 20 different designs, JetPaks® are modular hot tub jets that allow you to customize your spa jets, interchange the JetPaks® within the seats of your spa at any time, and easily upgrade if those needs change in the future. The JetPak® system also saves energy, making Bullfrog the most efficient spa in the world. Bullfrog Spas also recycle energy by using warm air from the equipment compartment to help
to heat the water in the spa, rather than using cold outside air. Bullfrog Spas Winnipeg has also recently introduced Pinnacle Spas to their line-up.
Each hot tub comes with 32 standard features, including waterfall, LED lights and speaker/ subwoofer system, and offers peak value in design, hydrotherapy, comfort, and efficiency.

You don’t need a fancy cottage on the lake or a glitzy island getaway this summer. Stay home and create your own fun in the sun with a complete range of products from Krevco Lifestyles. When Don Carson, president and CEO of Krevco Lifestyles, wants to impress his summer guests with his grilling skills, he cooks up some great eats on a Primo Grill & Smoker. “People think I’m the best barbecuer ever, but really it’s the grill that does the work,” he laughs. The natural wood charcoal “lumps,” and ceramic design create even heating across the entire surface of the grill and keeps the hot air inside, trapping the juices and flavour of the meat, giving it a smoky, traditional barbecue taste. Other features include a cast iron chimney cap, easy to read thermometer, reversible cooking grates, stainless steel lower vent door and ceramic shoes. Krevco Lifestyles is also the only local marketer of Saber Grills, the number one grill in the $1,000-$2,000 category. Every Saber Grill uses their patented infrared technology, which generates 100 percent infrared heat. Radiant heat, unlike convection heat used by traditional gas grills, directly cooks your food. Convection cooking relies on hot, dry air and radically reduces food’s natural moisture content. Saber’s patented infrared cooking system directs airflow away from the cooking surface, locking the food’s natural moisture, producing moister, juicy results. Additionally, this technology reduces gas consumption by 30 percent, allowing users to cook faster with fewer BTUs. The system also features “zonal” cooking systems allowing users to cook at different temperatures on one unit. So now you can enjoy perfectly cooked steak and shrimp grilled side-by-side, at the same time. Overall, Krevco Lifestyles offers five barbecue systems and their accessories to make anyone a gourmet barbecue master in their own backyard. Building a custom outdoor kitchen centered around a great barbecue island is a “gotta have” the company would love to do for you. The one shown in Carson’s own backyard is easy with Krevco Lifestyles’ full product lineup and their in house design team. Kick back with some deep-cushion, wicker furniture that emulates the comfort of indoor seating before enjoying a relaxing soak in one the company’s numerous styles of hot tubs.

Last year was the company’s 30th year in business and to celebrate, Master Spas created an anniversary edition hot tub for the company for 2012. Topped up with features such as a three-pump system, stereo, LED lighting, waterfall, deluxe cover, patented eco-filter and bio magnetic therapy seat, this hot tub, which would usually retail at close to $11,000, is on for under $8,000 and has been a great hit with customers. Strong Spa also recently introduced their patented Titan hardcover cover technology, the first and only hardcover backed with a lifetime warranty, for their entire hot tub lineup. While other spa covers take on water and become heavy and filled with bacteria, mould and mildew, the Titan is bacteria resistant, will never take on water, never degrade and never need to be replaced. For the client who wants to get a little physical activity in along with their relaxation, a swim spa is the ultimate in both. Krevco Lifestyles is proud to provide Michael Phelps Signature Swim Spas, designed by Michael Phelps and
his coach Bob Bowman for both physical and therapeutic purposes. Unlike other swim spas that contain hard currents, the H2X features a wide, deeper current making a smoother swimming experience, and less interference for others using the Xtreme Therapy Seat (XTS), which is ergonomically designed to wrap users in comfort while delivering the ultimate hydrotherapy. Carson states when creating an ultimate backyard escape, a Swim Spa can let you swim outdoors all year round. “It’s exciting hearing the stories from happy customers of our master Spa Swim spa line.” This summer, above ground pool sales are through the roof due to the early spring heat, and Krevco is rebuilding pools at a record pace in their Renu-a-pool division. Let their award winning team add new steps, auto covers, waterfalls and a new liner to your existing pool or create a backyard escape with a new inground pool design.

Innovation built to last By Leigh Patterson Visitors to Barkman’s large display at this spring’s Home Expressions Show got a sneak peak at several new products the company is expecting to launch in 2013, including a pizza oven and a full outdoor fireplace kit. Since many of Barkman’s innovative products are inspired by suggestions from their customers, Home Expressions was “another opportunity to look for feedback on our current prototypes and new product concepts,” says Barkman landscape product designer Dan Dufault. These new products will join Barkman’s popular line-up of precast concrete landscape kits, allowing homeowners to create bars, tables, firepits, waterfalls, patios and seating for any outdoor space imaginable. For example, two lighted pillar kits, a waterfall kit and island bar kit built atop a Roman Paver Patio could create an enclosed space perfect for entertaining.
glass fibre reinforced concrete,” Dufault adds. “This creates the opportunity for adding value and unique features into our landscape kits that wouldn’t otherwise be available in the market.” The landscape kits are durable, with undeniable functional and aesthetic appeal too. They complement Barkman’s existing line of paving stones, retaining walls and other products that are already well represented in residential yards across Manitoba. “Our kits are well made, intuitive designs that go together incredibly fast, and last a long time,” Dufault says. He notes that the sink kit, storage unit and BBQ surround displayed with the pizza oven are modular to allow for greater flexibility in layout, and be added to over time. The curved bar, complete with stone footrests, can be included in a fully equipped outdoor
kitchen or simply stand on its own as a natural gathering spot. Intimate dinners can be enjoyed at the pub table, which is an intricate pillar of quarry stone topped with a wet cast concrete accent piece. A geo-ethanol burner inset casts a subtle glow for the perfect finishing touch. The easy-to-assemble kits come with instructional booklets and DVD guides to help walk a do-it-yourselfer through the installation process. “There are no specialized skills required to put a kit together,” Dufault notes. Choosing Barkman landscape kits also comes with the peace of mind in knowing that help is just a phone call away from a locally owned company that cares enough about their customer feedback to put it into their product development.
Barkman conducts extensive research and development and product testing under harsh conditions to ensure their products can stand the test of time. The pizza oven will need to withstand temperatures up to 900 degrees, so “it’s critical that the quality is top-notch,” Dufault says. “We have access to a variety of concrete technologies, including dry cast, wet cast and summer 2012 | STYLE MANITOBA | 75

Poolside Life By Carly Peters
Photography: Mike Sanders As the temperature begins to rise, so does the appeal of a pool. Choosing the right builder to create your cool getaway may seem daunting, but with Samson Pools’ vast experience and hands on building approach, the only thing clients need to worry about is what bathing suit to wear when their pool opens. Beginning with an in-home consultation, clients discuss their needs, their budget and desired design elements with the company, and in the end receive an onsite quote for the pool, a rare offering from most installers. Samson Pools will then apply for the needed building permits on the homeowner’s behalf. From start to finish, Samson Pools’ installation process takes approximately a week. The pool kit comes swim ready, with pumps and filters all set in place for clean, clear water as soon as it’s up and running. Along with traditional natural gas systems, the company has seen an increase in demand for heat pumps that pull humidity from the air and convert it to heat the pool water. Samson’s in-ground pools can be created in virtually any shape or size, although Blair Irwin, co-owner of Samson Pools, says they are seeing more old-school rectangular pools to keep along the straight lines of a landscaped yard. They are also adding in a lot more detail items, such as waterfalls, LED colour lighting, sun ledges, and custom slide kits for customers that want to create the ultimate swim experience in their own yard.
And, it’s quite obvious clients are extremely happy with the job Samson Pools does, as 90 percent of the company’s business comes from referrals. Irwin suggests that along with the stress-free installation process, the fact that his partner Jonathan Kreviazuk and himself are on site during the project speaks to their level of quality and commitment. “We’re the only company in town where the two owners are on site, working with the crew and where customers can talk directly to us. Customers can then also be assured that whatever was discussed in their initial meeting is what’s being completed,” he says.
Clients also take comfort in the fact that both Kreviazuk, and Irwin have extensive experience in the industry. Having been trained by Sam Kreviazuk, who has built over 5,000 pools in a career that spans 44 years in Manitoba, both have gained thousands of hours of priceless onsite knowledge. With over 20 years of building, servicing, renovating and selling pools in Manitoba, the partners are two of the most experienced builders in the province. “Because all of our services, from small pool installations to complete pool packages, are done in-house, we can control the quality that the Kreviazuk name is known for and that our customers have come to expect.”

Celebrating 100 Years in 2012
Just like the changing faces, I-XL has evolved over the years as well. It has transitioned from being a brick manufacturer to a full masonry supplier. It has seen the clay pipe industry come and go, multiple evolutions in brick making techniques, and as a supplier, the emergence of a popular new market; stone veneer.
I-XL Masonry Supplies is celebrating a big milestone this year - 100 years in the brick business! A family company started in 1912 by a man named James Hargrave and his soon to be son-in-law, I-XL is now home to its third, fourth and, recently, fifth generations of family members.
Anyone in the industry will be quick to say that longevity is one of brick’s best benefits, and this is a value that is reflected by I-XL and the industry. For the occasion of its 100th birthday, I-XL has donated its decommissioned brick plant as well as initial restoration and operating funds valued at 4 million dollars to the Friends of Medalta Society, its neighbours in Medicine Hat’s Historic Clay District. In addi-
tion to touring both an extruded and pressed brick plant as it operated in the 2000s, visitors will also be able to make their own soft mud bricks, just as it was done at that site in the early 1900s. In addition to the brick plant, Medalta visitors can visit the historic Hycroft China factory, beehive kilns, and exhibits from Medalta’s prestigious Artists in Residence program, as well as regular community concerts and events. I-XL expects the Brick and Tile plant museum to be running this summer and invites everyone to participate in the celebrations. For more information, visit www.ixlmasonry.com or www. medalta.org.

Silk and Soil You may not instantly see the crossover between House of Silk and Superior Soil & Sod Supply Ltd, two businesses owned by James and Melanie Norbury. But, when it comes to creating beautiful greenery inside and out, the connection is clear. For 35 years, Superior Soil & Sod Supply Ltd. has been serving northeast Winnipeg, and making connections in their community. Whether it’s a home delivery of potted plants to an elderly client, supplying bagged soil onsite or delivering bulk and bagged material, the company offers quality garden and yard products for any application. To celebrate their years of success, the company is rewarding customers with three summer weekday specials- Two Buck Tuesday offers $2 bagged soil; Wednesday a half ton of soil for $19.97; while Thursday is buy four bags, get the fifth free. With the DIYer in mind, Superior Soil & Sod Supply Ltd. offers not only garden and superior soil and sod, but also additional bulk material such as mulch, aggregates and decorative stones, including new Manitoba-made purple limestone. Some surprising outdoor trends cross into Melanie’s second business, House of Silk, an 8,000 square foot shop featuring a multitude
of silk flowers, plants and trees. She states more people are choosing to mix large silk elements, such as grasses and decorative agave plants, with live plant material in their pots and gardens. “They look so real, weather very well, and unlike a real plant, there is no maintenance required,” she states. The quality and appearance of silk plants have come a long way from when Melanie’s mother started the business. Whether it’s a stunning wedding bouquet (“I’ve had brides actually smell my flowers,” laughs Melanie), an opulent Christmas tree for a Winnipeg casino, or an
in-house display, House of Silk’s handmade creations look like the real thing. Designing for a large residential and showhome client base, Melanie has recently been incorporating prairie inspired elements such as grasses, dragon’s branches and birch trees, which can range from five-feet shoots, to 20foot wall features. “We’re seeing a lot more rustic elements to counter the clean lines of contemporary homes,” she says. Melanie encourages customers to come directly to the store to be inspired for their own home.

Faux Stone Product a Hit Four years ago, Easyrock was launched to the public, and Grant Jehle, President of Fort Distributors Ltd. hasn’t looked back since. A “star” as far as quality home finishing products go, Easyrock continues to be the favourite fauxstone product to home and business owners, contractors and others in the industry. “We have had the most outstanding response to this product, “ says Jehle. “The proof is in the sales numbers. People just love it!” He notes that many are initially attracted to Easyrock for its amazing good looks, but soon realize and appreciate how easy it is to work with and its versatility. Easyrock is a synthetic but extremely authentic-looking rock face. It can be used indoors or outdoors, and is applied much the same way as siding. Panels are joined with a lap indent, making portions seamless in appearance. It is lightweight - each panel weighing only two and half pounds - and requires only eight screws a piece to fasten to walls. Easyrock comes in a variety of colours and styles. “There really is something for every taste. We have so many different styles and colours, you can definitely find the look you want with Easyrock,” says Jehle, who adds that there is matching caulking to cover screws, making them virtually invisible for a flawless finish. Recently Easyrock has taken steps to improve its already exceptional product – it is now
available in what is called a 2nd generation panel, meaning a new hard coat has been applied to all Easyrock panels making them ultra-durable. “These panels are so strong, you can take a hammer to them and they won’t crack or chip. Real stone can’t stand up to that,” says Jehle, adding that panels are also extremely fade resistant. Easyrock has been a steady winner with homeowners and cottagers. Now it is gaining
in popularity with architects, contractors and developers who are opting for a beautiful product they can work with any time of year regardless of weather temperature. “It’s also readily available and is so easy to apply, contractors or developers don’t have to wait on skilled masons to finish a project,” says Jehle, noting further that culture stone can only be applied in summer months. Jehle and the staff at Fort Distributors invite everyone to visit their offices, see the product firsthand, and if need be, receive “Easyrock training” to ensure a successful do-it-yourself project. With a full time carpenter on staff, customers can get an explanation and demonstration right on the spot. “Our product is available, in stock and ready to go home with you. You can be working on your new fireplace, exterior walls or whatever your project is on the same day!” says Jehle. Fort Distributors Ltd is located just North of the Perimeter at 938 McPhillips Road in St Andrews MB (visit www.fortdistributors.com or call 284-6647 for more information). They have two other showrooms conveniently located in Winnipeg: Durabilt Windows & Doors Design Centre, Unit 2 – 1600 Regent Ave, and Kesay Design Centre, 693 Taylor Ave, across the street from the Round Table restaurant on Pembina.

A View to Renovate By Kelly Gray This year, nearly 70 percent of Manitobans plan to pick up hammers and saws themselves or call contractors to get renovation projects underway. High on the list of must-haves are replacement windows. “There are not too many things you can put into a home that make you money. Windows are certainly one of these,” says Sean Phillips, Winnipeg-based Sales Manager, All Weather Windows. He mentions that All Weather’s products have earned them the Energy Star Manufacturer of the Year designation for the past two years. All Weather Windows has been a leader in innovation for 35 years. Today, the company offers a stunning selection of vinyl, wood and metal clad window products that are as technologically advanced as they are good looking. Indeed, new windows are an investment that has real payback. Consider that just having new windows can raise a home’s resale value, thanks to improved curb appeal. The windows themselves have a return on investment as high as 90 percent. The other benefits come in the form of reduced energy consumption and enhanced quality of life with homes being less drafty and more environmentally sensitive. With Manitoban’s looking for clear choices, what is exciting the market in replacement windows? A good case in point is the new Apex line from All Weather. This window offers a revolutionary V-weld technology that means water and air leakage is a thing of the past. Apex Alloy features a high performance fusion welded PVC frame that eliminated the need for box-to-box construction. “This means improved energy efficiency as well as greater structural integrity,” says Phillips.
On the outside, the aluminum cladding creates bold styling possibilities thanks to a range of colour choices. As well, Apex windows deliver with triple weather stripping much like you would find in your car. This means a tighter seal and more dependable windows overall. Making them still better is the warm edge spacer that creates a window that is among the highest performers in energy efficiency in the industry today. All Weather is a full line supplier with a network that includes more than 1000 independent and chain store dealers across Canada. In fact, the list comprises a veritable Who’s Who of leading building supply retailers, from boutique operations to big box stores.
that number over 200. Now doors can be as modern or traditional as a designer or home renovator demands. Products include interesting inserts created from sandblasted glazing and clear glass lights that have detailed metal work. There are coatings and bevelled surfaces, as well as designs that easily meet the needs of a traditional home styling or those with a modern flair. Phillips remarks that while these windows are superior technologically, they also look fabulous, making them great choices for wellconsidered home renovation projects. “This is really a ‘have your cake and eat it too’ scenario. There are only a few places in your home where an investment in new products brings such a wide range of benefits,” he concludes.
The product range includes PVC, wood and metal clad offerings, from casement to picture to awning, and everything in between. As well, All Weather’s windows have strong exterior finishes that offer design elements such as powder coatings and a host of colours and tough faux wood finishes. Indeed, the wood style finishes of the metal clad exterior products defies anyone to tell the difference between these and actual wood products. The beauty of All Weather’s performance products extends to entryways as well. Where once the industry offered a limited number of door light availability, All Weather has stepped up to create a vast line of these products

Upgrading Spaces By Carly Peters Photography: Michael Roberts
Having lived in Alberta, Australia, Washington, and now Winnipeg, Claudia Davies and her family know a thing or two about home renovations. With a concept in mind, she employed the expertise of Harwood Design Builders Limited to turn her aged Tuxedo home into a functional, family friendly space. “I had a concept to start, and decisions were made by me, the boys and Wayne [Sage] as the project evolved,” she states. “It was about being flexible, and working with the house to get the end result we wanted.” The 1976 home featured fairly dated aesthetics along with compartmentalized rooms that wouldn’t fit with Davies’ active family. The first point of purpose was to open up the living room, dining room and kitchen so there was a flow and better function. A wall was taken down between the family room and sitting room so Davies’ three girls could run through and play. The brick fireplace was replaced with a gas fireplace, surrounded by clean millwork with a touch of detail, built on-site by Harwood. “We wanted to keep true to the age of the house, but at the same time upgrade the details,” states Wayne Sage of Harwood Design Builders Limited, who has been recognized five times on the national stage for their 84 | STYLE MANITOBA | summer 2012
renovations, and has won the coveted National Sam award for best kitchen renovation in Canada, along with multiple Manitoba gold medals. The focal point of the home renovation for Davies certainly was the kitchen. Harwood directed her to an appliance supplier that could provide the family with the appropriate fixtures, such as a double dishwasher and microwave that pulls out at the girls’ level. The dark
wood island was designed to be like a piece of furniture, and create a warm gathering place for the entire family and invited guests. The lighter cabinetry in the background, along with the blue-gray walls allowed for this stand-alone feature to pop. Custom cabinetry from Klassen Kitchen Gallery, and installed by Harwood, which features glass fronts on both sides, offered enough separation between the kitchen and
dining room, but still let enough light shine through for an airy feel. The backstairs showcases just how flexible and innovative the onsite team, Sage and Davies were on the project. The stairs, which had an oddly placed window, were re-constructed, and another window was recreated at the top of the flight for light. The large landing space offers ample room for the kids to put on their shoes, while the custom-made storage under the stairs features inset shelving, internal lighting, a plug for charging phones and compartments for the three girls’ boots to keep the space clutter free.

Marrying Lines By Carly peters
Blurring the lines between contemporary and classic was the design goal behind this kitchen. Taking elements from the home’s architectural aspects and marrying them with functional features created a space with both modern and ageless style. Urban Effects by Norcraft Cabinetry’s newest style, Muirfield, pictured here, utilizes a wide rail design and V-groove detailed joints to give the door style a fresh look on a popular Shaker Style.
“It’s a subtle twist on a popular theme,” says Gino Vadacchino of Urban Effects by Norcraft Cabinetry. “It’s just a touch more detail on a simple, classic design that’s very popular right now.” The two-toned kitchen is another design element that’s making its way into more homes. Vadacchino states many people love the look of dark wood, but feel it might be too rich for an entire kitchen. The island, shown in smoke grey, displays the depth of the dark wood, while the clean mission white cabinetry in the rest of the kitchen stays understated.
The island matches with the home’s millwork and fireplace railing, creating a seamless flow from living room to kitchen for entertaining - whether guests mingle around the 14foot countertop or help prep food with the commercial grade appliances. It also houses ample space with built-in storage features to keep the upper cabinetry minimal for an airy, clutter-free environment.

Kitchen&Bath Go Pro
When people want to cook like a real chef, they buy the pro’s tools. The trend is the same when it comes to creating a restaurant-style kitchen. At 26 1/2-inches tall, Grohe’s K7 semi-pro (seen in chrome, but is also available in real, grade 304 stainless steel) is a professional faucet made for the everyday kitchen. “People are wanting that professional look for their kitchen. They want people to say ‘Oh my goodness, did you see that faucet?’” states Astrid Bergstrom showroom manager of Robinson Bath Centre. “They also want great function. A kitchen faucet is used a minimum of 90 times a day, whether it’s for washing hands, washing vegetables or rinsing dishes. So when you buy a faucet, it has to work every time.” Grohe’s K7 semi-pro features “silk move,” which allows users to gently glide the handle and change the temperature with even just one finger, a “speed clean” surface for easy, quick removal of lime build up and “whisper quiet” technology so you’ll barely know the water is running. Bergstrom suggests people come to Robinson Bath Centre to view the working display of the kitchen faucet and “hear” it for themselves.
Tile All
Ceramic tile is not only beautiful in kitchen and bathroom floor applications, but it’s also a tough, enduring material that stands up against common sources of wear and tear. Tile offers flexibility in both design and style. Ranging from smaller six by six inch squares, to 24 by 24 inch tiles, it offers finishes, colours and textures to match or adapt to any décor. And tile is not only limited to flooring. Backsplashes, murals and countertops can all be tiled in an artistic manner as well. The ancient Romans even saw the benefit of tile for its durability. It is great for high-traffic areas, thanks to its strength and resiliency to staining and wear. And when a breakage does occur, repairing tile is far simpler than fixing other flooring, such as hardwood. To ensure your tile meets its full potential, offering years worth of beauty and durability, proper installation by an experienced professional is key. F&J Ceramic Tile specializes in high-quality tile installation, working in both residential (like the glazed, Shorehill kitchen floor shown here), and commercial applications, including a recent tile installation at a Winnipeg MLCC location. Ferdinandt Gjini, owner of F&J Ceramic Tile, states that while different colours, types and tile styles may come and go, a quality product and installation is something that endures.

Bright with design promise By leigh patterson photography: michael roberts
A grand Exchange District building with striking architecture and huge windows is the perfect showcase for a company poised to celebrate 30 years of interior design excellence. Interior Illusions co-owners Magda and Ken Zelickson recently relocated their store to new premises at 100 Princess Street, where designforward home furnishings and accessories, a Hunter Douglas Blind Gallery, custom drapery/ bedding services and a top-notch team of designers and decorators come together under one incredible roof. According to sales manager Arnold Tiessen, the naturally lit expansive floor area is much more
amenable for clients to visualize their living space. Here, a large selection of upholstered goods and other furniture - sourced mainly from North America and Europe - can be displayed to their fullest advantage. Tiessen singles out Calligaris, an Italian line whose modern pieces include functional touches without sacrificing style. A glass and wood dining room table, for example, features cleverly hidden extension mechanisms; it opens up to accommodate more dinner guests, then closes effortlessly. Interior Illusions represents a number of Canadian furniture companies including William, which manufactures eco-friendly, contemporary pieces and Quebec-based Dinec, supplier of birch dining room and bedroom suites. The Jaymar line offers transitional to modern furniture including an upholstered bed with modular headrests as well as sofas, loveseats and home theatre seating. Visitors can also browse the West Bros Inc. collection of sleek walnut, cherry or birch solid wood bedroom furniture. Interior Illusions brings style outdoors too, via a line of outdoor resin furniture by Villa Cabana. These amazing modular pieces can be used singly as individual seating areas or combined together to create larger pieces such

as a lounger. “They are extremely popular and weather really well in our climate, Tiessen notes. Complementing the furniture displays is a range of fabulous artwork and accessories, all hand selected by Interior Illusions’ designers and decorators to help clients further imagine their dream space.
The current design trend of mixing rustic, natural pieces with a more current look is apparent in the one-of-a-kind natural wood tables from the Phillips Collection, which also includes a trio of driftwood bonsai-like trees. Unusual, freestanding wood vines from Thailand are among many statement accent pieces. Interior Illusions carries huge standing floor mirrors to add an element of sparkle and dimension, as well as film canister wall art for theatre rooms. With wedding season upon us, Interior Illusions is a great source of unique giftware, some from the Beatriz Ball Collection. These hammered metal pieces never need polishing and provide a visually stunning presentation at the dinner table or simply on their own. Interior Illusions is perhaps best known as the go-to place for designer and custom textiles, draperies and bedding. Some of these lines are exclusive to the Winnipeg market, from a complete line of Calvin Klein area rugs to Toronto’s Daniel Stuart Studio bedding and upholstered furniture. A Nourison custom rug centre allows clients to create a wool and silk blend area rug made to their specifications simply by selecting a design, shape and colour combination to suit their needs. When it comes to helping people achieve a complete custom look, Interior Illusions truly shines. Clients work with designers on new home and renovation projects, first identifying their personal vision for the space, then browsing through Winnipeg’s largest selection of fabric samples, including wallpaper. “This process allows for so much more creativity and flexibility when coordinating
room decor,” Tiessen says. Once a theme is selected, four full time seamstresses create valances, drapery and bedding to fulfill the desired vision. “We work with many new homebuilders and their clients to help them choose not only soft coverings, but also exterior stones, countertops and flooring to put together a complete look,” Tiessen notes, adding that Interior Illusions can act as project manager on renovation projects from start to finish, thanks to its strong network of tradespeople and contractors. Perhaps the jewel in the crown for Interior Illusions’ clients is its Hunter Douglas Gallery, the newest in Canada.
the “Top Down-Bottom Up” “Silhouette” blind, and the “Pirouette” window treatment that combines a Roman shade with a sheer. “We can create a whole home automation package with remote controls, and with blinds that move up and down automatically according to light conditions. These features are especially great for security reasons and for people with mobility issues,” Tiessen explains. “Between our Hunter Douglas showroom and our custom sewing center, we can put together a beautiful package of hard window coverings and draperies.” Thanks to local gems like Interior Illusions, the future of interior design in Manitoba is looking bright, indeed.

design&decor Privacy Meets Style
Sunlight is an essential decorating element to any home and should not be sacrificed simply for privacy and light control. “Silhouette® window shadings offer the perfect window covering solution,” says Sue Rainville, Director of Marketing for Hunter Douglas Canada. Silhouette® window shadings feature two sheer fabric facings with fabric vanes suspended between them. When the vanes are open, the view outside is preserved, and natural light is gently filtered. Closed, the fabric vanes allow privacy while maintaining a soft, elegant style. The vanes adjust to further soften incoming light and help protect furnishings from the sun’s damaging rays. A mere touch of a button on the remote control or the flip of a wall switch is all it takes to lighten things up, tone them down, or give all the privacy you need. Available in two-inch, three-inch or four-inch vane sizes and backed by an exclusive Lifetime Guarantee, Silhouette window shadings come in a beautiful palette of designer colours and a wide variety of applications, from arches and angles to tilt-only operation for smaller windows and motorization for hard to reach windows. Cord loops are kept safely taut without interfering with smooth operation, and the PowerRise® system not only makes shades easy to operate, it completely eliminates the need for control cords. Best Seat in the House
There are movie buffs, and then there are movie connoisseurs. For the more-than-average fan of home theatre entertainment and in-home electronics, K&S Electronics and Security can create the ultimate in automated home-viewing experiences. The theatre room in this Pritchard Farm home is designed to be aesthetically pleasing with no obvious wiring or speakers, yet still offers great quality sound. The entire system is integrated with Control4 Home Automation and features a 120inch screen, high-definition projector, and 7.1 surround sound. The homeowner can control lighting, temperature, security, and all of their audio/video equipment by using either the provided touch screen remote, or an iPhone or iPad. The lighting integration portion is highly tied to the movie experience. Fitted with dimmers, when the television turns on, the lights turn down; when the TV is paused, the lighting comes on; and when the system is turned off entirely, the lighting stays on for a set amount of time and then shuts down. The Control4 system can be used in any room of the house, including the great room, which features a motorized lift. When the user wants to watch TV, they simply use their smart phone to have the lift expose the screen, as well as to come down again once the user is finished watching TV.

design&decor Light Control & More
The transitional shades in this dining room offer the ultimate combination of style and light control. “Everyone who wants Silhouettes, once they see these, opt for Illusions,” says James Friesen of Budget Blinds. The newest transitional shades from Lafayette, Illusions are available in a variety of colours and different light filtering capabilities, including blackout. Friesen adds that not too many people think about how window coverings look from the exterior of the home. “They look really good from both inside and outside,” he notes. Like many blinds, these can be motorized and incorporated into a whole home automation system. Today’s systems can be controlled remotely via iPad or iPhone. Whole home automation can incorporate lighting, thermostats – virtually anything that plugs in. “If you want to heat up the cottage before you arrive, you can do it from home,” says Friesen. Lights can be programmed to turn on and window coverings to go down at certain times, or equipped with sensors to automatically adjust at sunset. Using radio frequency technology, the system is cost-effective to add during renovations. Budget Blinds on Henderson Highway offers a range of whole automation options. At the same time, more than 60 blinds, shutters and shades are on display in the showroom, along with hundreds of drapery fabrics to suit all needs and tastes in window coverings.

Grey Matter People used to think going grey was a negative thing, but it is now in fact the hottest colour. From cabinetry finishes to flooring, grey has been making waves in home decor, and is now finding its way into furniture. Exclusive to Dufresne, the Verona collection is the ultimate example of fashion meets function. This heirloom quality furniture, made in Manitoba by Defehr Furniture, features a multistep finish that brings out the luster and clarity of this haute shade. “In the five or six weeks we’ve had this collection on the floor, it has become extremely popular,” states Kelly Krentz of Dufresne.
96 | STYLE MANITOBA | summer 2012
But beauty is certainly more than skin deep with this line. What Dufresne really wanted to achieve with each piece was to solve customer’s furniture dilemmas. For example, storage has become an issue for a lot of boomers who are downsizing their residences, but bring with them a lifetime of wares. The Verona frame features the option of under bed storage drawers, which can be used for clothing, linens, or other personal items.
Secret storage is another unique and innovative feature of the set. Tucked in the second drawer of the five-drawer chest is a felt lined, hidden jewellery drawer that can be opened with a touch of the wooden push piece and once again hidden for additional safe keeping.
“In the last three months we have inundated our store floors with storage bedrooms,” he states. “People are looking for space saving solutions. With drawers like these it’s great for transitional seasons. No more moving your winter clothes downstairs and bringing up your summer items. It can all be stored in your room.”
“All people need to do is give the drawer a little nudge and it recesses by itself. No more sticking or slamming drawers,” he says. “We really invite people to come test it. Once customers watch them recoil, it usually seals the deal.”
But the true ‘push de résistance,’ if you will, is the soft/self close function of the drawers.
