Welcome to the summer edition of Style Manitoba! I’m hoping this issue will help you forget that we ever had winter at all. At writing time, the irises are in bloom and the air is heavy laden with the delightful fragrance of lilacs. I’m reminded of how great it is to get outdoors again!

While some of us have cottages to escape to, others opt for an urban retreat in their own backyards. To herald the new season and help get your creativity flowing, our Outdoor Living section offers inspiring ideas for outdoor spaces, including beautiful landscape designs, pools, decks and more. In fact, this just might be the year to consider installing a pool or adding a new sunroom to your home and getting more mileage out of the season. On the design front, Transcending Home features the unique amenities of an ultra modern, custom-built residence beautifully designed to accommodate the needs of both humans and pets. And those looking to renovate should check out Breaking with Tradition, coverage on how a complete upgrade brought a 1980s home into the 21st century. Now that the warm weather has arrived, there’s plenty to do over the next few months in Manitoba. Not only are the patios open for business citywide, there are also some great new restaurants to try (read Global Inspiration for the buzz on the Peg’s latest hot spot). Best of all, it’s festival season. There are exciting events both in and out of town all summer long, including perennial favourites like the Jazz Festival, Folk Fest and Folklorama. This August, mark your calendar for a whole new event: Interstellar Rodeo – a unique weekend of music, food and libation at the Forks featuring Manitoba’s Tanya Tagaq along with musical heavyweights Dwight Yoakam, Sinead O’Connor, Steve Earl and others. Hope to see you there!

Light is abundant in all its forms in the open concept main floor. Huge triple pane windows from Jeld-Wen allow in tons of natural light, ceiling potlights illuminate the lofty great room, and a stunning light fixture from Robinson Lighting in the dining area lends elegant ambience.

Achieving the vision starts with the home’s undeniable curb appeal. With its distinctive angled rooflines, the walkout bungalow located in Headingley’s Deer Pointe development makes an ultra-modern, yet refined statement. An enclosed dog run/courtyard near the front entrance is the first hint at the dog-friendly amenities desired by the homeowners. It blends seamlessly with the rest of the home’s façade, which features low maintenance acrylic stucco accented with aluminum longboard siding installed by Red River Siding. Even the single and double bay garage has a modern edge, sporting a row of small windows and doors. City Mix provided the concrete required to create a wide pathway leading to the home’s main entrance. In a nod to the couple’s Asian heritage, the front landing was dropped by eight inches so visitors can cross the threshold

into the home without having to physically take steps up or down. The visual transition to the home’s 3,500-square-foot interior is flawless, too, thanks to the angular cavities incorporated into the ceiling trusses above the foyer. “This is a unique feature we included specifically for this couple,” says Trottier. “We wanted to emulate the roofline to maintain consistency between the exterior and interior.” Sliding barn doors visible from the front entrance serve to define the large entranceway. The doors can be closed to keep the dogs to one area of the home, while allowing light through spaces between the door slats. Lighting, in all forms, is paramount in this open concept home. The kitchen, dining room, great room and four-season sunroom share the central main floor space.
6A glass railing by SSG Notion marks the stairwell to the lower walkout level. Sliding barn doors can still let light filter through even when closed, thanks to wide spaces between the slats.
When a young professional couple approached Gerry Trottier to design and build their custom dream home, they wanted to make sure their special four-legged family members were accommodated, too. Trottier and his Southwynn Homes Ltd. team were happy to oblige. “These clients wanted a spacious home for their family,” says Trottier. “They are also devoted to their two dogs, and this became an important part of the home’s design.” At the same time, the couple had strong ideas about the style of home they wanted to achieve. As a transitional builder with designs that transcend modern and traditional, Southwynn Homes helped the homeowners fulfill their vision at both aesthetic and functional levels.

Floor-to-ceiling triple pane windows in the lofty great room allow in loads of natural light. In the evenings, the young family can relax and cozy up to watch TV or enjoy the sleek stainless steel gas fireplace inset into the wall. A dramatic light fixture from Robinson Lighting above the dining room table helps define that area. Light coloured laminate flooring connects the great room and dining room spaces to the more intimate kitchen. Here, dark espresso Kitchen Craft cabinetry and a chocolate ceramic tile backsplash
contrast beautifully with the gleaming white quartz countertops, stainless steel appliances and cabinet hardware. The homeowners opted for convenient drawer style pantry storage over a walk-in pantry. To keep the look streamlined, the fridge is set into a recessed area at counter depth. A wide, horizontal window is tucked above a deep stainless steel sink for additional daylight and to provide a view to the backyard from the kitchen.
The huge master bedroom features large windows and a walk-in closet. But the pièce de la resistance is the ensuite, where the homeowners enjoy ceramic tile floors, a freestanding soaker tub and a glassed-in shower supplied by Fort Rouge Glass. A separate toilet and sink area maintains privacy. An additional smaller bedroom and main bathroom are in a separate “wing” from the master bedroom, while a laundry area and a builtin dog kennel complete with a central vac unit and dog shower round out the main floor space. A luxurious deep soaker tub shares the ensuite with a glassed-in shower stall by Fort Rouge Glass. More space abounds in the lower walkout level, which is accessed via plush carpeted stairs with a modern glass railing by SSG Notion leading from the main foyer. Space and light below are abundant, thanks to a long bank of windows and lots of potlights. The family, their guests and their pets can enjoy this expansive space for all sorts of activities. Durable vinyl flooring installed by Curtis Carpets handles high traffic, and resists wear and tear from doggie paws and claws. A standalone bar/service area is conveniently adjacent to the media space, while an open exercise area is located discreetly in a section defined by pillars and a lower ceiling. An additional bedroom and bathroom in the lower level gives the family plenty of room to host friends and family.
In a home as impressive as this, it’s easy to overlook the details that make it a standout, such as the fully integrated sound system. Southwynn Homes’ interior decorator Lesli Stern-Trottier helped the homeowners with their design selections to achieve a cohesive, calm ambience throughout the home. Then there are the details that are mostly hidden from view, yet so critical to this Southwynn Homes build. These include wood structural flooring, steel beams and steel teleposts, and one zoned furnace.
The cozy media room in the walkout basement has a convenient bar/serving area, making it the perfect place for the family to relax and entertain.
“We divided the home into two zones,” explains Trottier. “Thermostats target heat and cool to each zone requirement, making it much more efficient. Having one furnace instead of two means less space is required to accommodate it.” Further comfort is achieved with a heat recovery ventilator, which provides climate

control and supplies continuous fresh air from outside. For all these reasons and more, this custom home garnered a Gold Award in its category in the 2014 Fall Parade of Homes. Beyond the awards and accolades, what really matters to the Southwynn Homes team on this - and any custom build project - is what the home’s residents think. It earned big thumbs (and paws) up.

About the Builder According to Certified Master Builder and Southwynn Homes Ltd. owner Gerry Trottier, “Communication is the most important thing about the custom home building process. It starts right from the beginning.” Keeping the dialogue open between builder and client at every step is one of the many skills Trottier learned during his early years as a homebuilder, working alongside his father. “I was a sponge at the time,” says Trottier. Trottier’s commitment to responsive customer service has continued since he established Southwynn Homes in 1984. Trottier, together with interior decorator Lesli Stern-Trottier, sales manager Jeff Brown and site foreman Rob Gurniak, along with a reliable team of sub trades, build six to 10 custom homes per year, and complete several renovations and additions. This keeps their workload manageable, so they can provide undivided attention and care to their clients. From the initial consultation, to the preliminary design stage, to selecting products, through the construction phase and beyond, the Southwynn Homes team is available to guide clients through the entire process of building their dream homes. Southwynn Homes can be found in many Winnipeg neighbourhoods, in surrounding rural areas and Interlake cottage country. A member of the New Home Warranty Program, Southwynn Homes is SECOR™ Certified for Workplace Health and Safety and a member of the Manitoba Home Builders’ Association. A commitment to the highest industry standards and client communication makes Southwynn Homes a trusted name on Manitoba’s custom homebuilding scene.

hen you are a star, you shine. This is certainly true for MercedesBenz Winnipeg, an award winning industry leader and the largest single point Mercedes dealer in Canada. To get to this position, the team at the dealership has worked to enhance every aspect of the business to create a total package that has engaged each customer with the corona of luxury experience that is Mercedes-Benz. “We are so much more than just a car company,” says Mercedes-Benz Winnipeg’s General Sales Manager, Mark Kelly. “At Mercedes-Benz, it’s a broad package of details that go well beyond mere A to B transport. Our cars, our staff, and our facilities all combine into a complete experience that is all about safety, performance, and reliability in a luxury vehicle that seeks to deliver refinements in comfort, esthetics and style few can match in the world of cars.” Now, they have taken this thinking and applied it to the physical dealership. Opening this summer is Mercedes-Benz Winnipeg’s new flagship store and service centre located at 23 Rothwell Road at Kenaston in Winnipeg’s rapidly expanding southern sector. The new site will feature 17,000 square feet of space at ground level to provide display room for 18 to 20 new models including an AMG Performance area. “In the lower level we will have 18,000 square feet of additional showroom space for Certified Pre-Owned cars making us the true one-stop shop for all things Mercedes here in Manitoba,” says Kelly, who points to the highly prestigious
Star Dealer Award (2015) for service excellence as a prime example of the attention to detail at Mercedes-Benz Winnipeg. The new location will also feature 16 state-ofthe-art work bays, including four bays dedicated to the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter vans, as well as an additional three-bay detail centre. More, the plans call for a six-vehicle drive-thru reception area to more efficiently serve the needs of aftersales customers. “We are also increasing the size of our team by 20 percent. This means more support and service personnel, as well as more sales people to make the total experience as effortless and well considered as possible. We want to continue to be a place that is about more than just quality cars. As our 2015 Star Dealer Award shows, Mercedes-Benz Winnipeg is about a total package that seeks to take things to a higher level for our customers.” Inside the new south Winnipeg facility, guests will find a larger showroom for new cars with more models on display. “There is also more room inside for our gently used Certified PreOwned models,” says Kelly. “These come with the remainder of factory warranty plus a two year addition to the power train coverage.”
People who take advantage of Mercedes-Benz Winnipeg’s Certified Pre-owned program quickly discover that they can obtain the full Mercedes-Benz experience for a lot less money than might be spent on a new model. According to Kelly, sales leaders have been the incredible GLK 350, the C-Class models and the M Class luxury SUVs. Kelly suggests that the cost to get into a Mercedes-Benz is actually much less than most people consider. At the Winnipeg dealership a driver can get into a new model starting around $35,000. Pre-owned Mercedes vehicles are listed beginning in the low $20,000 range. “At these prices no one should pass up the opportunity to enjoy the Mercedes-Benz experience,“ he says, concluding that life is short. “Why spend time wishing you were driving a Mercedes when we make it so easy to get behind the wheel of what many consider to be the world’s finest ride?” President Brian Lowes and the team at Mercedes-Benz Winnipeg invite people to discover the star power of the Mercedes-Benz experience. The dealership’s new location is conveniently placed at Rothwell Road and Kenaston Blvd. just across from Good Life Fitness and the Tuxedo Business Park in south Winnipeg.
Further, he reports, each pre-owned car is certified after a comprehensive 150-point inspection that goes well beyond the requirements of the Manitoba Safety. “Our inventory of pre-owned Star Certified cars reflects not only pride of ownership from

Winnipeg’s Nott Auto has always offered unique luxury for less. In fact, this has been a key pillar of the Nott experience since day one more than a decade ago. Now, with the opening of the group’s artistically inspired second location at McGillivray and Waverly in the heart of the south end of the city, the opportunity to get behind the wheel of reasonably priced luxury has never been easier. Nott now features as many as 100 cars under one roof at their new south Winnipeg store. This means buyers don’t have to slog around on frozen parking lots in the winter while they watch salespeople chip ice off car windshields. At the new location, buyers and art enthusiasts can walk around in climate-controlled comfort with a glass of wine and view a very wide range of cars while surrounded by walls filled with fine art. The five-acre location offers 29,000 sq. ft. of display and office space that includes an additional 9,000 sq. ft. of soon to be open service shop area. To be sure, the unique attributes of Nott’s new location take the car buying experience to a new level. Indeed, inside the showroom the walls work as an art gallery with Gurevich Fine Art curating an impressive collection of more than 30 creations from some of Canada’s most intriguing artists.
“From the beginning we have operated authentically and intuitively from a position of ‘why not.’ Nott - Luxury Auto and Art Gallery is definitely a continuing step in this direction of innovation in both customer and staff experience,” says Nott Auto Corp. President Trevor Nott. “With our new location we can operate in a free-spirited, real time, creative way. The typical franchise store is limited by the manufacturer’s direction which guides how they market, display vehicles and process potential clients. We see that the auto sector is a market that is demanding change and we are loving the opportunity of delivering,” he says, commenting further that they are fine-tuning the concept with more and larger original art works and even a slate of art classes set to occupy a part of the showroom each week. Simply, Trevor’s vision is one that seeks to showcase a selection of cars that represent the highest form of art in the auto world alongside pieces of visual art from the world of pen, paint and canvas. No surprise then that Nott Auto has been recently named Top Choice Luxury Car Dealer of the Year for the third year in a row. “We are keeping the ball rolling by expanding our busy service department,” says Trevor, noting that soon they will open another six-bay service centre at the south Winnipeg location to add further to the package of innovation that includes cars people seldom see on Winnipeg roads.
To make luxury auto acquisition easy, Nott has expanded its leasing division, Luxury Leasing Canada Ltd., to offer flexible lease and finance terms on new and used vehicles. According to Trevor, this is yet another reason why Tesla Motors selected a local family business to be the brand’s leasing and finance representatives for Manitoba client orders. “I have been a long-time admirer of Elon Musk and his team at Tesla for their ground-breaking efforts offering clean power solution in the auto industry. We couldn’t be more excited or proud Tesla have entrusted us to service the people of Manitoba.” This package of innovation is one that started with Nott’s Lagimodiere location that was opened more than 9 years ago. Back then Trevor and his team turned the local car world on its head with lower price acquisition of luxury autos. Today, this tradition continues. For example, long serving Sales Manager Barry Swain will take on the mantle of General Manager at the Lagimodiere site. “Our staff have all been carefully hand-picked and we clearly understand our unique culture, our clients comfort and ease is paramount to our mutual success,” says Nott, who invites people to discover how they have aesthetically upgraded the Lindenwoods corner of Waverly and McGillivray and reinvented Winnipeg’s luxury car market in the process. A Whole New Kind of Festival: B Y
Hold on to your hats! After three roarin’ years in Edmonton, Interstellar Rodeo is comin’ to Winnipeg! But it ain’t no cattle round-up! Six Shooter Records, an independent record label based in Toronto, has herded together some of the best AmericanaRoots-Rock musicians, songwriters and vocalists for three unforgettable days of music at The Forks (August 14-16).

to Sinead O’Connor, sip an organic Irish Rondo wine and feast upon fancy cheese - all at the same time. Sound good? If you say yes, the Six Shooter motto will certainly ring true for you: “Life is too short to listen to shitty music.” Well put! (And might we add:
The inaugural Winnipeg edition of the festival is creating lots of buzz - and for good reason. Just look at the musical heavyweights Six Shooter Records has roped: Dwight Yoakam, Sinead O’Connor, Steve Earle, Blue Rodeo and Tanya Tagaq. And that’s not all - professional foodies are rustling up some of the best grub and spirits the city has to offer. Put ‘em together and what have you got? The most unique concert experience you’re likely to soak in this summer. Rock out

over into Europe. Connections like these count.
That’s because Six Shooter Records is all about “the rebel,” about being bold and demanding absolute quality - no compromises.
“The industry has changed a lot over the past 15 years,” Sara admits. “Bread and butter used to be the distribution of physical CDs, and tours were promotional devices. Now, that’s flipped upsidedown.”
“Everything we do is about excellence in art first,” affirms Sara Stasiuk of Six Shooter Records from her Winnipeg office. This drive for great art has taken a small management company founded in 2000 by Shauna de Cartier and made it into one of the most booming record companies in Canada - with thanks, of course, to a roster of trailblazing artists, including Whitehorse (with Six Shooter since day one), Hawksley Workman and Tanya Tagaq. The record company also boasts connections across Canada, down to Nashville and 22 | STYLE MANITOBA | SUMMER 2015
Perfect time for a rodeo - one wherein you’ll get to see some stellar local, national and international artists perform their great music live. Let’s start at the roots and then head to the stars. Local offerings include veterans like Greg MacPherson, whose decades of song have developed a singular emboldened sound; and Scott Nolan, whose endearing songs and musicianship have him pegged as the spirit of the prairies. New sounds come thanks to JD & The Sunshine Band, a collaboration between musicians and the street, as well

Six Shooter will also offer some of the cream of its own crop, including Newfoundland’s lyrical Amelia Curran and Colter Wall, Saskatchewan’s tambourine man.
Not only will the festival court the city’s finest mobile kitchens, but wine will also be specially selected by local wine expert Ben MacPhee-Sigurdson, who will select vintages to be featured throughout the festival and strategically paired with music performances.
What unites all these unique artists? “Badass aesthetic,” Sara proclaims with a bit of chuckle. “It’s all about what Six Shooter is loving right now.”
as Ridley Bent, who “tears off a strip” with his band’s charismatic cowboy charm. Nationally celebrated acts include the brazen Hawksley Workman, the magnetic July Talk, fuzzed-up Elliott Brood and the critically acclaimed NQ Arbuckle. Treasured 1980s-born band Blue Rodeo will play, too - providing their enduring summer night soundtrack.
harmonies and stage presence go folk, gospel, and even heavy metal; Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings revive the soul with American funk; and masterful storytelling and musical tenacity reunite when Steve Earle performs with his original band, and The Dukes. And like father like son; Justin Townes Earle, Steve’s own progeny, delivers exceptional American-style song-craft.
And get ready to be wowed by the singular sound of Tanya Tagaq. Her collaborative histories with mega-stars like Bjork and 2014 Polaris Prize-winning album, Animism, have taken the world by storm. Tagaq’s progressive take on traditional Inuit throat singing will punk you out and take your breath away.
Now the star festival headliners: America’s Dwight Yoakam and Ireland’s Sinead O’Connor. Wow and WOW! Dwight Yoakam’s signature rule-breakin’ honky tonk sound enthralls - especially as he plays songs from his new Second Hand Heart album and classics like the iconic “Guitars, Cadillacs.”
International offerings include an impressive range of Americana and even an Aussie! Australian hit-writer Vance Joy showcases his “Riptide” genius with a set of catch crafted tunes; Lone Bellow’s infectious

But who says badasses are bad hosts? Six Shooter is happy to give everyone at Interstellar Rodeo the attention they deserve. That means the rock stars get a bona fide rock ‘n’ roll stage; and the fans get to experience The Fork’s landscape as natural seating. “As a meeting site for thousands and thousands of years - it’s right up our alley,” Sarah enthuses. “Public space is dear to our hearts. And no matter where you are, sightlines are incredible.”
“A whole other level is going to be revealed,” Sara promises. Weekend Passes for Interstellar Rodeo are by far the best deal and they are transferrable! (Psst! that means you can buy a pass and share it.) Single day tickets are also available. Coming with kids? Ages 12 and under are free! But Interstellar Rodeo will surprise with another re-think of your typical festival. Gone are the days of the corndogs and cola. There’s a more sophisticated palate to please. Nourishing gourmet food and drink choices will strike a chord with the Rodeo’s vision. “Hotdogs and fries are good; but cheese plates are better,” Sara laughs. “We want to create an event that has attention to detail. It’s a Saturday night in Winnipeg. The weather is awesome. For restaurants this is a bread and butter evening with many rooms competing for guests that have a range of options in a city renowned for its culinary diversity. This night guests are filling tables quickly at The Merchant Kitchen, a new 150-seat (plus 40-seat private dining room, 22-seat bar, and 14-seat Chef ’s Bar) restaurant/ lounge adjacent to the recently opened Alt Hotel at Portage and Donald across from MTS Centre. What is attracting Winnipeggers to this new location is its eclectic menu of 34 globally inspired plates that range from sumptuous duck wraps to an amazing Korean brined chicken that is breaded and fried, and comes with delicious brown sugar soy and garlic chilli dipping sauces. The Merchant Kitchen is the progeny of local restaurant best boy, Bobby Mottola, who is well known for his Pizzeria Gusto, a south-end mainstay that brought authentic Italian pies and flavours to the ‘Peg dining scene. Alongside Executive Chef Eric Lee, Mottola and his General Operations Manager, Suzy Afifi, travelled widely over a two-year period dining from food truck windows and dropping in to ‘mom and pop’ operations all over North America to get a lock on flavours and cooking styles before opening this May. “Merchant Kitchen was really in the works for 10 years, but we got going full steam about three years ago. We wanted to move the city’s food world into another universe. Our idea was to offer a variety of cultural cuisine in a menu that was all about flavour, excitement, and community,” says Mottola, who sits at a high

backed banquette looking out to a packed restaurant and a lot of smiling faces. “We wanted to create a room where there was conversation, small plates for sharing and foods that continually surprised patrons with a dynamic explosion of tastes.” What Mottola, Lee and Afifi came up with was a 34-item opening menu that is as much an act of pure creation as a bow to great standards such as Bahn Mi, the ubiquitous Vietnamese sandwich that comes with a generous spread of pate and a large slice of juicy pork belly, Shrimp and Kim Chi Lettuce Wraps, and Tacos Carnitas made with braised pork shoulder. According to Mottola, the big sellers have been the Korean Fried Chicken, the Duck and Steak Sharing Platters, the Tortilla Soup and the Latino Sandwich. “We were looking for difference, and how people were wowing customers with small plate offerings when we set out to investigate other cities like Minneapolis, New York, Toronto and hitting small towns from Mexico to California and SUMMER 2015 | STYLE MANITOBA | 25
Florida,” says Chef Lee who came over from his position at the acclaimed Pizzeria Gusto where he managed the kitchen for the past five years. “We are all about local and seasonal. So we had to get our suppliers behind us. This means local chicken and pork as well as in season produce. The closer we are to the farm, the bigger the flavour on the plate.” For both Lee and Mottola this new business is an opportunity to grow with new flavours,
cooking styles and presentation. Consider that most restaurateurs that expand do so with an established concept. Not so here. The Merchant Kitchen represents a challenge to execute that few have the courage to take on. Not only is the pair moving away from the comfort of a much loved established operation on Academy Road where accolades and praise are the catch of the day, but they are treading in waters where dishes come with new creative flourishes that require research and a lot of practice to get things perfect. Looking out to the buzzing dining room this is just what has happened. Mottola turned to a wealth of local companies to create a room that is stylistically paired with the high design of the 140-room Alt Hotel. For example, Winnipeg’s K&S Electronics and Security raised the bar with motorized viewing screens, LED Televisions, and on-site automation features that have The Merchant Kitchen almost running itself. The restaurant features a 160-inch dropdown motorized viewing screen in the main dining room and a 100-inch motorized screen in the private dining area. K&S also provided four 55-inch LED screens above the bar. There is a 70-volt sound system throughout, as well as a Video Matrix system where staff or guests can view from a variety of sources with monitors showing separate items on each screen. The on-site automation allows staff to work systems such as lighting via smart phones and tablets through the Control 4 system.

The overall restaurant design sweeps from the display kitchen and its 14-seat Chef ’s Bar, to the libation island in the centre where bartenders spin and shake a collection of signature cocktails designed by Toronto’s Robin Kaufman, a man who could well be Canada’s top bartender. Under the drop ceiling design element that surrounds the bar like a rectangular halo, staff are whipping up drinks such as Tokyo Drift, a highball of watermelon, sake and gin with star anise syrup, and Margarita Picantes sweet, spicy and smoky cocktails made using jalapeñoinfused agave and a touch of Laphroaig scotch.
The Merchant Kitchen would like to thank the following companies for their contributions & support to this project: Altima Cabinet Works Limited Artis REIT Banville & Jones Wine Co. Beautiful cabinetry at both the bar and the heavily wooded sommelier station were custom created by Winnipeg’s Altima Cabinetry from architectural specs offered by Stantec. Beyond the glow of the bar and its 22 seats is an unobstructed front bank of windows that give onto the urban landscape and its grey hues. The contrasts come in the form of the relation of the grey concretes to the red of the soft fabric banquettes, to the warmth of the purpose worn tables and earthen toned flooring. The exposed brick inside wall sports a massive mural by Winnipeg artist Pat Lazo who was able to read Mottola’s mind and create a stunning image of tough streetwise roosters that, like the restaurant itself, are prepared to fight the good fight.

Hold your horses! The home of former city faves like Basil’s Bistro and The Tap & Grill has been reborn as a rabbit! And this rabbit likes to rock and roll! Now known as Black Rabbit Bistro Lounge, the space is warm and rustic with its wooded interior, exposed brickwork and sturdy dining tables. The lounge is hip and communal, thanks to a fleet of benched tables and big screen televisions, making it the perfect place for intimate dining and boisterous gatherings alike. Keeping up with it all is the kitchen. Helmed by Chef Gareth Stewart, Black Rabbit has hopped to the current culinary trend - craft, which means attention to detail, quality and wholesome flavour is paramount. On that note, cocktails here are a must. “Good choice,” confides the waiter at the mention of a Carthusian Sazerac. “Carthusian” after a range in the French Alps, this tiny tipple blends emerald Chartreuse and rye with magical Absinthe and sharp bitters; the resulting ruby gush reignites faith in classic bartending. Like lemonade with kick? The Barrister fills a flute with Calvados apple brandy, peppery Campari and rooty Aperol. Lemon juice and ginger beer finish; the right remedy for a hard workday - indeed, it leaves us smiling. But heed the waiter’s warning for the “small plates;” small = medium, so get ready to share. Selections include pork belly with apple fennel slaw, and mussels in lobster bisque and cognac. Pub munching? Try gourmet chicken wings, fish and chips, pizzas or burgers. That’s our alibi for trying the nachos! ;-) Made New Zealand-style, Black Rabbit’s interpretation piles crisp tortillas with beef, gooey cheese and mellow avocado salsa sour cream. But back to “bistro.” Mains are grill-based selections of steak, game and fish paired with the likes of onion marmalade or maple orange. The Sirloin Cap is superb. Herby chimichurri combines with sensuous bone marrow butter to make their exquisitely grilled 10-oz steak worth the entire visit. To pair? Back to New Zealand! Double Cove Pinot Noir washes elegantly with cherry, oak and spice. Desserts are on the short, but sweet: semifreddo or pudding. Feeling light? Semifreddo’s apropos with jammy raspberry coulis.

A Grand Dining Experience The Blue Marble Restaurant & Lounge, located in The Grand Winnipeg Airport Hotel by Lakeview is getting rave reviews from travellers and local residents alike. With a tapas (small plates) menu full of items too good to share, the restaurant dresses an elegant dining experience in an intimate, modern setting. Head Chef Anthony Kucera puts an emphasis on fresh using an on-site urban cultivator to grow the micro-greens and herbs that accent dishes made with other local ingredients. The result is favourites, such as cavena risotto with pork belly, porcini, blueberry, shaved Parmesan and pea shoots; and beef short ribs, braised and accompanied by potato pureé, creamed leeks, crispy parsnip and a Guinness sauce.
Guests can select the perfect beverage pairing for their meal from the restaurant’s custom built wine cellar, which features 150 varieties of Canadian and international wine. This entire selection is available as part of the Grand Hotel’s catering packages and offers a variety of tasty options in the hotel’s Tarmac Boardroom for 13, or Runway 36 Executive Lounge for larger functions. HOW TO CHOOSE A HOUSE CLEANING SERVICE Shopping around for a reliable house cleaning service can be time consuming. Winnipeg has many service providers, ranging from franchises to locally owned companies to independent cleaners, which makes choosing the right one difficult. For the sake of clarity, “cleaning business” refers to a registered and usually insured company that is NOT a franchise, while “independent cleaner” refers to a non-registered and often non-insured service provider (often a person on their own or a couple). Summarized below are the most important aspects to consider:
1 2
Ask friends and co-workers for a recommendation.
Independent cleaners are often less expensive but you lose the professional distance that exists with a franchise or cleaning company. The relationship with an independent often becomes informal, so addressing quality or scheduling issues may become awkward.
3
Acquire three quotes from providers of the same type. Don’t compare an independent cleaner with a franchise or a cleaning business with an independent because the service offer-
ing is very different. Franchises must pay for royalties, and often vehicles and insurance on those vehicles. Cleaning businesses don’t pay royalties but the hourly rate can vary greatly. Both pay for business insurance. Independent cleaners usually don’t have insurance, which can make them less expensive to hire but you have no protection if they damage your property.
4
Understand pricing. Do not choose a company purely on price. If they seem really inexpensive be careful because there’s usually a reason: unprofessional; inexperienced; not insured or can’t pass a police record check. If they seem really expensive, compare prices of similar service providers. Some providers will charge a low hourly rate but the quality may be low. Others will charge a lower rate than their competition but increase the number of hours required for the job so the final price is much higher.
5
References. Although references are another layer of information gathering, they are not always reliable. If hiring a house cleaning business or a franchise, they are responsible for verifying the good reputation of their staff. If hiring an independent cleaner or couple, it is your job to verify their reputation(s). Make sure you ask for former employers’ business (not

6
For security, make sure your cleaning service is insured and bonded, and can verify their business registration. Verify by asking them to have their insurance agent email you a copy of their current policy. They should be able to show you their company registration at the in-home estimate.
7 8
Make sure the service provider can provide criminal record checks.
Make sure you have the contact information (landline phone number or cell number AND address) of the service provider. EXTREMELY IMPORTANT. If damage or theft occurs, they are not going to answer their phone. You will need their address in order to take action.
9
Policies & Cleaning Checklists: Always ask to see a list of their policies and cleaning checklists. This helps you to be better informed about the Do’s and Don’ts of your service provider, and what to expect from their service. It will also help to avoid any misunderstandings about additional charges, etc.

Ket Barr saw the Kildonan Green neighbourhood’s potential early on. The entrepreneurial Barr jumped at the chance to make a professional investment in her own community after moving to the area. She established a full-service salon and spa in a new mall development on Plessis Road. Her clients are thrilled she did. Barr is the owner of Tantrum Salon & Spa, a one-stop shop for a variety of services for people of all ages. Tantrum opened in February and has already attracted many new clients eager to enjoy hair, makeup and nail services, facials, lash extensions and much more in a friendly, relaxed atmosphere. Barr has grown her team from an initial core group which includes head aesthetician Colleen, who Barr describes as “one of the best body waxers in the city,” and Yuliya, an award-winning nail technician. Tantrum can accommodate
everyone from the most time-strapped professional to those who want to spend an entire day getting pampered. Children are welcome at Tantrum, too. “I love kids,” says Barr. “They grow up to be our future clients,” she says, adding that after 14 years as a stylist she “hasn’t had a crying child yet” in her chair. That’s reassuring news for nervous parents who want to bring their child in for their first haircut. Tantrum’s large, funky space is available for private parties. Groups of five or more can book Tantrum for a half-day of hair and makeup services – a perfect option for bridal parties and grads. Barr is excited to offer products from SST Cosmetics, a Canadian makeup line. “It’s a great mineral-based, healthy makeup, the best I’ve tried - we all fell in love with it,” says Barr. “I don’t use or sell a product unless I love it and am passionate about it.”
Tantrum’s customer-centered, friendly approach appears to be working. It’s not unusual for clients to strike up conversations with each other while relaxing with a tea or coffee during their pedicures. Tantrum offers free consultations, and the services are reasonably priced. “We want people to be able to afford to come back and enjoy regular services to help keep feeling and looking their best,” says Barr. Barr credits the friends, family and devoted longtime clients who helped her get Tantrum Salon & Spa up and running. “It’s a hair stylist’s dream to have your own salon,” she says. Now, Barr hopes the realization of her dream will inspire others to walk through Tantrum’s doors and become her clients…and friends. She’s made it easy. The parking at Tantrum is free and plentiful. Fresh coffee is always brewing. And warm smiles and great service await. Website: www.tantrumsalonspa.com
She is looking forward to hosting a special SST Cosmetics event at Tantrum in September to introduce the line to more people. Above all, Barr and her staff strive to nurture the relationships they have with their clients and to address their individual needs. “I want our clients to be happy. We will remember you, get to know who you are – it’s important to us,” says Barr.

WATERFRONT BOUTIQUE OFFERS HIGH-END FASHIONS

new upscale boutique in Winnipeg’s Exchange District caters to women who want the latest in fashion but don’t have time to shop around for that high-end look. Featuring women’s clothing and accessories, Flaunt Boutique offers new and upcoming designers as well as the classics for a fresh look of fashion. “Flaunt Boutique is perfect for women looking for a shopping destination offering clothing and accessories that have that wow factor,” says Kate Holden, co-owner of Flaunt Boutique, located at 106-270 Waterfront Drive. While the boutique is about a shopping experience, it’s also about convenience, Holden says, adding that their fashions appeal to customers who don’t have a lot of time to shop around. “For example, if a customer needs something for weekend, a special dress or accessory, we probably have it here,” she states, adding that for convenience, all products are available online.
“We went to 12 shows in six months, which included trips to New York and Las Vegas, to look for new and trendy fashions,” she says. “We made the commitment, so we wanted to make sure we established relationships with the right designers.”
Offerings of designer jewellery range from chunky bracelets to silver and crystal necklaces to pearl earrings. Fashion items include designer tees and tanks sparking with Swarovski crystals. Dresses range from classy casual to chic cocktail styles. Accessories include designer boots and handbags, and quality leather jackets. Holden, who is also an owner at Deluca Fine Wines, says it wasn’t a stretch to go into fashion. “I’m already in retail with the wine store where we also offer gifts and accessories, so the boutique is an expansion into women’s fashion.” Along with partners Najara Barros and Shelley Smith, Holden made the decision to open a boutique in August, and the location they fixed on was the Exchange District.
The fashions are from designers around the world - Europe, United States and Canada - so Flaunt is offering different options, Holden points out. “We want to bring shoppers back to Canada by offering fashion that people want and don’t have to go to another city to buy. We are offering high value that is still affordable. “ A spring fashion show held at Hermanos was a huge success, Holden says, adding they will continue to plan events, such as their monthly cocktail parties. “Once a month, we have a cocktail party where we enjoy appetizers and champagne, and pair it with a girls’ night out,” she says. Guests include friends and clients from their extensive database. To view fashions available at Flaunt Boutique, check out their website at www.shopflaunt.ca
“The waterfront is an up and coming area and it’s beautiful. We opened our boutique on December 1, 2014, and got the last commercial retail space on the strip.” While there was a push to open before Christmas, Holden says they were committed to doing their research to ensure a different offering. STEREO Reviewed by Randal McIlroy MARK KNOPFLER Tracker (Mercury/Universal) He makes it sound so easy at first. The unhurried pace, the Celtic flavouring and that well-worn voice say Mark Knopfler isn’t desperate for reinvention. And then, the man who says he “can use so few words to write a song” nails it again. “Beryl” pays pithy tribute to the late novelist, Beryl Bainbridge – “the tobacco overtook her when they gave her a Booker” – while recalling his early Dire Straits days via a “Sultans of Swing” rhythm. “Lights of Taormina” is sun-dappled Mediterranean holiday reverie, but the lyrics note “wars for Sicily and Spartan women.” The famous guitar playing lifts without self-importance, surprising when he digs into it, and he finds a supple partner when Ruth Moody of Winnipeg’s Wailin’ Jennys shares a pretty duet in “Wherever I Go.”
KING CRIMSON The Elements – 2014 Tour Box (Inner Knot)
faveriswoodfurniture.com
It was only two years ago that King Crimson leader Robert Fripp seemed ready to pack it in – too disheartened at last after one too many battles with the music industry. In its periodic, many-handed evolution since 1969, however, the band has taken a rebellious life of its own, to the point where Fripp has talked of it as a force of its own, insistent above his will. The latest incarnation, introduced on the road late in 2014, commands seven men – three of them, perplexingly, drummers – and The Elements introduces it with a handsomely packaged two-disc alternative history of mobile intelligence since 1969, with alternate takes, music from subscription packages and concert tapes culled from the burgeoning number of live box sets. The music corkscrews as the years pass, favouring an intense, chin-incollar construction of instrumental heavy metal with knotted guitars and tricky drumming. Peace airs briefly with an early sketch for the looming, celestial “Starless,” in a tender duet for Marc Charig (cornet) and John Wetton (bass guitar) – barely more than one minute long, but a minute to still the heart.

The Englishwoman could sing anything – now, even a Muppets song – but Norma Winstone likes it quiet. For Dance without Answer, she continues with Glauco Venier (piano) and Klaus Gesing (soprano saxophone, bass clarinet). She needs no more. Her understated animation of Madonna’s “Live to Tell” on its own could bring the international garlands she should have gathered decades ago, and “Everybody’s Talking” breezily makes the case for covering familiar songs without laziness. The rising Gesing is in great form, with a nice brush of echo to deepen his commentary. And if that reading of “Bein’ Green” becomes the novelty hit needed to wake drowsy radio programmers, then let it be noted she sings Kermit’s theme with dignity.

BOOKSHELF All-Day Breakfast (Douglas & McIntyre) by Adam Lewis Schroeder
Substitute teacher Peter Giller is just trying to keep his family together after the death of his wife, but an accident during a school field trip to a plastics factory turns Peter and his 11th-grade class into zombies who crave bacon instead of brains. Trying to get everyone safe, and hopefully back to human, Peter uncovers a vast conspiracy, even while stapling on miscellaneous body parts when they fall off. A novel that’s absurd, frightening, and heart-breaking in equal measure.
Cauchemar
(ECW) by Alexandra Grigorescu A beautifully haunting novel, full of atmosphere, heat, and eerie goings-on in a Louisiana swamp. Hannah’s adopted mother and protector dies, leaving the 20-year-old alone in the world, until she falls in love with a good man named Callum. But when her home turns out to be a nightmare, Hannah must confront dark secrets from her past, as well as her mother Christobelle, the town outcast who has strange powers over men and is said to commune with the dead.
Nothing Like Love (Doubleday Canada) by Sabrina Ramnanan
The Private Jet Experience of Investment and Financial Planning
Catherine Macdonald worked as a researcher and archivist, and those skills feature in this, her first novel. It’s a Winnipeg summer, June 1899, and Reverend Charles Lauchlan tries some amateur sleuthing to prove his former university roommate is innocent of murder. There’s lots of historical colour, from the city’s old jail to mansions on Broadway, from Colony Creek to the bordellos of Annabella Street, as Charles encounters corruption in high places, backroom deals, and the whisper of big money: seems like nothing ever changes.
Harmless
(McClelland &Stewart) by James Grainger From the author of the much-loved The Bishop’s Man comes a novel about justice, judgment and loyalty. A teenaged girl dies and suspicion falls on Dwayne Strickland, an ex-con with a shady past, someone who never quite fit in this clannish, close-knit small town. But then, neither does Tony Breau, a retired prison guard who came home to retire and renew his acquaintanceship with Caddy, his first love, who just happens to have raised the dead girl as her own. Linden MacIntyre’s latest is a page-turner, set in a place where too much memory is toxic.

any of the last century’s most important events took place in Berlin, most prominent being its establishment as a command base for Germany during World War II, and its role in the collapse of the Soviet Union.
Walking through this city, one feels its history written all over the streets and buildings. From the gaps left by the collapse of the Berlin Wall to the continuously shifting economic resurgence between formerly East and West Berlin, the city is alive and in flux.
Berlin has been a natural meeting place of cultures and ideas since its founding. Beyond the city’s immediate impression as huge, it also seems to be a bit of a mess. Construction cranes dot the horizon, many traffic lanes are closed, and parts of the Berlin Wall stand stark, like remnants of a dark civilization. I was surprised to find that Berlin, like Paris, has a preponderance of short buildings with intermittent towers, deterring the notion of an actual city skyline. It appears to be
crouched to the ground, waiting for the next bomb to drop. The symbol of a new, reunified Berlin is the Brandenburg Gate, which seems to be a natural meeting place for its citizens. Under Soviet control during the Cold War, this landmark was impossible to access, as it was located in the infamous ‘death zone’ of the Berlin Wall. The center district is called the Mitte, where most of the city’s attractions are within walking distance. Museum Island, a compact district next to the Spui River, contains five unique museums, highlighted by the Pergamon. Crammed with restaurants and shops, including perhaps my favourite small bookstore in the world, Do You Read Me?, the district is prime walking turf. Our visit to Berlin nearly coincided with the celebrations of the 25th anniversary of the Berlin Wall falling. We were a few weeks late, but the city still seemed to be in party mode. Set aside notions of a German

monoculture. Berlin is truly a city of international tastes and ideas, reflected in its restaurants, bars and clubs. Art and history abound: Berlin boasts more than 150 museums and 1,000 arts institutions. We visited the Pergamon to see the magnificent gates of Ishtar and the Neue, where the bust of Nefertiti is the star of the show.
As for modern art museums, favourites include the Martin-Gropius-Bau and the NeueNational, a treasure trove of contemporary art from Jeff Koons to Barnett Newman. The David Chipperfield exhibition that greeted us there seemed to capture the city’s zeitgeist, packing the large glass lobby with 144 stripped logs, clearly forcing a familiar space to be seen with new eyes and energizing one of Berlin’s most adventurous modern galleries in advance of a major renovation starting in 2015.
To experience the city on foot, we took an Insider Walking Tour, which started at Museum Island and proceeded alongside several war monuments, including the Nazi Book Burning Memorial (a glass panel looking down to rows of empty book shelves), meant to commemorate the night of May 10, 1933, when more than 25,000 books deemed unacceptable were burned in a public square. We strolled through Gendarmenmarkt, the most beautiful square in Berlin and
the Monument to Murdered Jews and then back to the Brandenburg Gate. Our guide Tarek, born to Egyptian and German parents, was very informative. He told us that Germans accept their history and don’t try to bury it. Everywhere you look in Berlin there’s a memorial or photo exhibition about the history of the city.
In an article in The Guardian, Chipperfield wrote, Berlin “is not only poor and sexy but engaged and vital, a reminder of the more messy, contradictory and organic qualities that all cities should have but are elsewhere replaced by homogeneous commercialism and a more extreme segregation of the rich and poor.”
home to one of the city’s liveliest Christmas markets. Then we walked to the infamous Checkpoint Charlie, famous mostly because it was the entry point to pre-1990 entity known as East Berlin, and now known as ‘snackpoint’ Charlie (because of all the cheap food options). Finally, we walked through
The stories of the Berlin Wall and the three sections of it that still remain are as fascinating as they are haunting. The wall was more than a single structure. It was a series of barriers, including a death strip that snaked for nearly 100 miles through the city. The Wall divided families from one another, fostering resentment as the West side grew richer and the East more desperate. Many people tried to cross it: some succeeded, many didn’t. Today, monuments to those who failed dot the landscape. Berlin’s history demands attention and reflection. And that history can render one melancholic at times, pondering the lengths humans will go to control and persecute each other. At the Jewish Museum, we were surprised by images of Allied troops leading German citizens through concentration camps after the war, forcing them to bear witness to the atrocities that had taken place right under their noses. Tarek explained that in addition to the 6.5 million Jews murdered during World War II, Slavs, gays and lesbians, Roma and mentally handicapped people
were also victims of Hitler’s brutal campaign. A must-do on any city tour is the Reichstag, the German parliament building designed by Norman Foster. On top of where the government convenes, there is a glass dome for visitors to see the commanding surrounding view, including of the Tiergarten to the south. It’s not just the 360-degree views. The audio commentary actually is based on where you’re standing and stops and starts as you do. The design is very clever and at the very top, the dome is open to the elements. It had rained the morning we went and water was pooling beautifully on the floor. One night, after walking all day, I took a taxi to a new addition to Berlin’s spa scene. Vabali is an expansive indoor and outdoor spa, loosely designed to resemble a Balinese spa. You realize you’re not in the tropics when you walk outside in only a robe and the temperature is three degrees. Unisex and nudity non-optional, the experience was new for me. The indoor saunas were more alluring than the tepid outdoor pools, with the best moments coming during the massage, administered by a young, wild haired Sri Lankan man. It was great to see Berliners letting their hair down and relaxing after a day of work. Berlin gets under one’s skin. It’s a city that once discovered, demands a second look. Greg Klassen is a Winnipeg writer, publicist and marketer who will definitely visit Berlin again.

POWER PERFORMANCE B Y K E L LY G R AY
At Winnipeg’s Mr. Electric, the testimonials say it all. As a leader in the removal of knob and tube wiring as well as renovation projects and new installations, the company and its president Chuck Lewis, have been building a reputation for reliability since 2000. Today, this reputation has made them a ‘go to’ contractor for everything from small residential jobs such as kitchen outlet repairs to larger commercial jobs where the Mr. Electric team handles all the electrical details from design to install. Satisfied customers are numbered in the hundreds and many write in to thank Mr. Electric for the headache-free work that has saved them time and money. Lewis is a highly experienced electrical contractor with years in the trade behind him. He wanted to bring something better to the Winnipeg market, where he could see there was a need for service and product consistency. His search took him to Mr. Electric, a franchise concept that was engineered to take a lot of the bumps out of electrical service work. The franchise model was what helped him on his path to create a more professional contracting business where customers would find uniformity, skill sets, and consistent pricing. “Our professional electricians are licensed, bonded, and insured,” says Lewis. In fact, Winnipeg’s Mr. Electric has been given an A+ standing by the Better Business Bureau. “It’s

our people that make us the best. We don’t hire just anyone. Our electricians must not only be knowledgeable industry professionals with years of experience behind them, but they also have to be the type of person you would like to have working in your home. We take this very seriously. For example, our staff wear disposable booties when we enter a home. No crew leaves a site at the end of the day before completely cleaning up, and we meet with our customer each day to give them a complete breakdown on work activity. That way no one is ever in the dark about schedule or progress.” Winnipeg is not an easy market. “People here expect the best work for the best value. You have to have very sharp pencils to succeed in Winnipeg. Our customers tell us we not only get the job done, but we exceed their expectations.
Delivering service at the right price is just our starting point.” This kind of reputation has also earned Mr. Electric the respect of large commercial operations. For example, when Winnipeg Home Depot customers ask for an electrician to help with the install of a purchase, the store frequently calls on Mr. Electric because they know the company will perform to their high standards. This, in return, reflects well on Home Depot’s brand credentials. All journeymen electricians at Mr. Electric have completed five years of comprehensive accredited training and are committed to continuing their education to keep skills up to date. For Mr. Electric, this is not enough. Before anyone puts on the uniform, they must prove they have what it takes. This means all hired electricians are reputable and bonded, and fully dependable for any jobs that run the complete slate. “Whether you need a bedroom ceiling fan installed, a plug added in your kitchen or your commercial site, or a complete electrical upgrade, Mr. Electric does it all. From 200 square feet of office renovations to 250,000 square foot build designs, we are a safetyfocused company that has the capacity to get the job done on time and on budget.” At Mr. Electric, their reputation for quality is their calling card. Year Round Lifestyles BY CARLY PETERS | PHOTOGRAPHY: JOHN JOHNSTON
The summer sun may be shining now, but when the weather turns a bit cooler it doesn’t mean you have to come inside. Krevco Lifestyles features your “gotta have” products that keep you living life outside year round.
And unlike a traditional pool, swim spas are like an endless pool that can be used 12 months of the year, making it a great investment for customer who wants more out of their backyard.
One of the company’s fastest growing product categories is swim spas. Designed to meet a broad range of health and wellness needs, swim spas are ideal for all types of training, swimming, fitness programs, aquatic therapy, relaxation, and family fun. And to make it easier for customers to find the right product for their lifestyle, Krevco recently created a new dedicated swim spa room at the company’s 700 Berry Street location.
This is also the thrust behind Krevco’s upswing in hot tub sales, which are already further ahead than last year.
Featuring Master Spa’s H2X Swim Spas, and Michael Phelps Signature Swim Spas, designed by Michael Phelps and his coach Bob Bowman for both physical and therapeutic purposes, customers can see and feel the benefits first hand. Shown in 12-, 15 - and 19-foot models, customers can actually try each swim system to see which suits them best.
“People don’t want to buy the boat, or the quad, or the vacation. They want a good investment; something they can use year round. And that’s why we’re seeing such growth with hot tubs,” states Don Carson, president of Krevco Lifestyles, adding the company has won the Consumers Choice Award for best pool and hot tub builder for the eighth year in a row. “Hot boxes of water can be sold anywhere. And we don’t want to bad mouth any other company or products, but we are very proud of what we offer customers.”
The company offers barbecues and grills from some of the best brands on the market. The range of products from Primo, Saber, Dimplex, FireMagic, and American Outdoor Grill will appeal to everyone, from the novice chef to the backyard grill master. Finally, if you’re looking to cool down after slaving over a hot grill, Krevco’s recent partnership with Bison Plumbing and Heating can create a chill. The companies coupling means customers can have their pool gas work completed, as well as have their air conditioner serviced at the same time. “We are the only pool company that can install your pool and service your pool, and install and service your air conditioning in the summer,” states Carson, adding that when it’s finally time to shut the pool down, Bison can close it up and then service customer’s furnaces. “We are the year-round, gotta-have store with the fullservice, gotta-have service technicians.”
He points to Master Spa’s Master Force Bio-Magnetic Therapy System, and EcoPur® Filtration System as just two highlights that make their hot tubs the best on the market. “People can shop around and look at other brands, but they always come back because of our variety, our high-quality brands, and knowledge. This year already proves it,” he states. Variety is key to Krevco Lifestyles’ other “gotta have” departments - from on-trend patio furniture, to gazebos, to backyard barbecues.

ackling any landscaping project can be daunting. A yard can begin as a blank canvas, open to endless possibilities. But when it’s time to move the vision to reality, it’s hard to know where to start. Despite the best of intentions, a landscaping project can fall flat, and a yard’s potential beauty and function is left unrealized. “That’s why having a master plan is key,” says Paul Szakacs, landscape designer for 3 Seasons Landscaping. “If you start with a comprehensive design for the whole yard, you have the choice to do the complete project or break it up into financially efficient stages.” For over 30 years, strong design balanced with a focus on customer service has been 3 Seasons Landscaping’s hallmark. While the company’s formula for successful yard design and implementation stands the test of time, the 3 Seasons team never takes a cookie-cutter approach: each landscaping project is unique,

custom designed and built to client specifications, needs and lifestyle. “We have an initial consultation with every client on site so we can get a good sense of exactly what they envision for their yard,” says Szakacs. “From there, we provide two or three different design concepts and provide a full range of ideas. There are multiple follow-up meetings to ensure we are on mark and meeting expectations. We literally leave no stone unturned.” Beyond taking pride in pushing the boundaries of design, as a one-stop landscaping company, “we can do absolutely everything,” adds Szakacs. 3 Seasons’ clients can access a wide range of services, including hardscaping, fencing, lighting, irrigation systems, water features, outdoor game courts and more. And as more people strive to make their yards an extension of their home, “we’re installing a lot of outdoor kitchens, which continue to grow in popularity,” notes Szakacs.
“For projects like this you need to strike a balance between plants and hardscaping, otherwise it can look sterile,” notes Szakacs. For a more traditional project, the 3 Seasons team took cues from a formal home’s façade by incorporating rounded shapes into a retaining planter inset into a wooden deck. Some clients have a certain theme in mind for their yard. Roman pavers, a custom dining pergola and flowering perennials were incorporated in a Tuscan-inspired backyard, for example. And an undulating, pergola-covered pathway in another yard has a decidedly formal Mediterranean feel. These 3 Seasons Landscaping projects are proof that starting with the best-laid plans can take a yard from ordinary to extraordinary.
Having all these services available under one roof makes the decisionmaking process easier for clients, and allows seamless integration of all the yard’s elements. Examples of 3 Seasons design and landscaping expertise abound in yards across Winnipeg and beyond. 3 Seasons Landscaping designed and completely rebuilt one award-winning Tuxedo yard from the ground up, leaving only a few mature trees in place to accommodate an artful blend of striking components: water features, sculptures, seating areas, pathways, an outdoor game court and mass perennial plantings.
visitors to a custom-made Asianinspired wood and copper-domed gazebo, which shades the seating area. The path also forms a bridge to cross over the modernist-style pond, accented by a copper waterwall and sculpture. Tall, shade-loving perennials like ligularia, as well as burgundy-red and orange coleus, hostas and lilies were planted en masse to achieve a lush, tropical effect desired by the homeowners. In another modern yard, 3 Seasons balanced a clean, linear gazebo, pool and deck area with an organic mix of evergreens. Well-placed trees and shrubs in the right scale helps make everything look cohesive.

Destination: Your Backyard B Y C A R LY P E T E R S
Summer months move swiftly, and not everyone can enjoy the warm weather at a cottage or far away destination. That’s why more homeowners are moving towards creating their own retreats just outside their back door. As the fastest growing pool company in the province, as well as being one of the most experienced, Samson Pools now offers expanded services - from pool installation to landscaping to developing outdoor entertaining spaces - to create a destination backyard. Beginning with an in-home consultation, clients discuss their needs, their budget and desired design elements with the company, and in the end receive an onsite quote for the pool, a rare offering from most installers. If the project requires a landscaping element, Samson Pools utilizes a 3D model program to show clients what the finished backyard could look like.
“This gives the customer the opportunity to modify the plans and make it exactly how they want it to be,” explains Samson Pools Co-Owner Blair Irwin, adding more clients are willing to spend the extra money to create their dream space with added elements such as custom fireplaces and entertainment areas. He notes this also includes modern pool accessories that add to the ease of ownership. Electric pool covers are becoming a popular item to add to new builds. With the flick of a switch the cover closes keeping out rain, leaves, dust and dirt, as well as adding extra safety for children and pets when the water is not in use.

Full automation is also making its way poolside. Much like in-home controls for thermostats or music, pool systems can be connected to an app on a smartphone in order to control temperature, lights, and water features. “Say you’re just leaving work, and you want to swim when you get home. You can just turn up the temperature from your phone and it will be ready when you walk through the door,” he states, adding the systems can also be installed to existing pools. Relax, You’ve Got Gellers Winnipeggers love their properties. But this love comes with the cost of time and labour with lawns, driveways and trees all requiring hours of work to keep them looking in top shape. Why not call Gellers? This Winnipegbased property maintenance company is all about taking care of the details while home and commercial property owners sit back and enjoy the beauty of well-tended lands. According to Gellers President Matt Bell, the company got its start in maintenance rather than as a business that works seasonal landscaping and lawn cutting. “This has meant that our crews work all year. So the guys that keep driveways and parking lots free of snow are also the pros you see on your property cutting grass, building a retaining wall or laying the stones for a new sidewalk or patio.” Geller’s offers a 100 percent satisfaction guarantee, free estimates, and uses equipment with the highest environmental standards. “By having fully vetted responsible staff with things like certificates in landscape management means our customers get the very best,” he says, adding that Geller’s fully supervised crews come to your site in uniforms with the latest in well serviced company decaled equipment that reflects well on your business or home.
“We are also more affordable, because we are not a seasonal fly-by night operation that has to maximize revenue over a short period. We are here for the long haul and our competitive pricing and willingness to go the extra distance shows this.” For example, people that may be considering making the move to condo living for the ease

Easy Living Solution B Y K E L LY G R AY It’s all about flexible options with Glastar Sunrooms by SunShade, Winnipeg’s leading manufacturer of three season add-ons. According to company president Steve Sarens, the fact that they custom make each of their Glastar Sunrooms specifically for a home’s unique attributes and the owner’s requirements mean a sunroom product that is second to none. Their customers agree. “Each job we do gives us five to 10 referrals. It turns out that our best sales people are those folks who have had us build and install a sunroom,” says Steve, a man whose family has been behind SunShade since day one back in the 1970’s.
Behind the success of SunShade is engineering. Indeed, thanks to a unique floatation system, SunShade is the only company in North America that can obtain permits to build sunrooms on un-piled decks. Here in Winnipeg this capability has them working with new home builders who look to Sarens and his crews to give their customers so much more than the traditional backyard deck where residents are at the mercy of biting insects and poor weather. And, while Sarens suggests that he is seeing a large gain in the new home sector of his business, SunShade is still a leading choice for sunrooms among owners of older homes. “Our goal is to make an attached sunroom that is so blended with the existing home style and character that people will wonder if it was an original feature. Older homes come with unique challenges and we are especially skilled at addressing these,” he says, commenting that the cost to install a sunroom is often covered by a commensurate gain in home value similar to what people find when they improve a kitchen or bathroom.
becomes the most used room in the house so it makes sense to have as much floor space as possible to maximize the enjoyment,” he says. Subcontractors do not build SunShade products. Specially trained SunShade crews build each structure to order on site. As such, Sarens is comfortable with their comprehensive service and satisfaction guarantee and remarks that his crews are occasionally sent in to make minor adjustments after a few years or fix a hole in a screen. “We train and promote from within. Installers start as assistants and we would never raise them to site leaders until they have been with us for at least two years,” he says, concluding that his crews are really building a lifestyle for customers who come to SunShade for an easy solution to short summers.
Over the past few years the trend has been for homeowners to look at larger sunrooms. “Our objective is to create a space in the house that is as much like the outdoors as possible. Once installed, a SunShade sunroom typically

More Design Value Experience the difference of truly meaningful design guidelines. Bridgwater’s design guidelines mean MORE attention to detail as each home design is carefully considered; MORE memorable streetscapes as Bridgwater’s streets showcase your home instead of your garage; and a MORE distinctive community than any new neighbourhood in Winnipeg.

Attention to detail gives homes distinctive quality BY DONNA MINKUS
When it comes to designing a home, the difference is in the detail. In the Neighbourhoods of Bridgwater, the focus on design not only adds value, but also gives each home a distinctive quality. Whether opting for innovative architecture and neotraditional styles, homeowners can rest assured that design is carefully considered prior to construction. “Bridgwater builders must follow architectural guidelines when constructing single family homes in all neighbourhoods, and having guidelines means more attention to detail,” says Dwayne Rewniak, Executive Director, Housing Delivery/Land Development, Manitoba Housing. “All designs go through an extensive architectural process, which involves review and approval by Manitoba Housing to ensure consistency of design throughout the neighbourhood,” he explains. “Our primary architect looks at a number of design considerations such as ensuring the exterior of the homes incorporate a combination of materials such as brick, stone or siding.” The guidelines also ensure diversity of style, Rewniak adds. “We want to avoid repetition so one home is not right next to another house of the same style. Recessed garages are mandated in the guidelines. All house designs must have
a recessed garage, so the emphasis is on the streetscape. We want to showcase the home, not the garage.” There are similar architectural standards for multifamily homes, as well as the commercial properties, Rewniak points out. “There is some consistency and overlap but all guidelines have the same vision, and that vision plays an important role in seeing the neighbourhoods develop as we intend them to.” In addition to home design, Bridgwater’s architectural guidelines cover landscaping and fencing requirements and lot layouts, Rewniak continues. “There are different types of lot sizes. Large laneless lots are primarily on the lake or park, while standard laneless lots are smaller. Laned lots (34’ to 38’ wide) are intended for smaller homes, which enable builders to construct at a more affordable price point. These homes are doing very well in the current market,” he says. While architecture guidelines are now the norm for Bridgwater builders, that wasn’t always the case, he notes. “There was some initial resistance because builders had to revisit their house designs. But they now recognize the value of the guidelines.” According to Rewniak, the guidelines should be presented to homeowners prior to the sale,
and the onus is on the homeowner to review the guidelines before they buy their home.
Neighbourhoods on target The Neighbourhoods of Bridgwater are still leading the city in new permits, with 287 building permits taken out in 2014, Rewniak states. Bridgwater Lakes is the most active for new construction, with over 700 occupied homes. “We are well past the halfway point of 1191 total, and the development is progressing very nicely,” he notes. New home construction in Bridgwater Trails started last year, and so far, close to 100 homes are under construction. New showhomes will be open to the public this September in time for the fall Parade of Homes. Bridgwater Forest is over 90 percent complete, with 1000 homes sold and occupied, and less than 100 houses remaining. “At Bridgwater Centre, Hilton Homes and A&S Homes continue to make good progress on the construction of multifamily homes. On the commercial side, Red River Co-op has opened, and we are very close to confirming more businesses. Announcements will be made in the near future,” he concludes.

LIFE IN TRANSIT By Carly Peters
Representing an extraordinary new vision in condominium living, StreetSide Developments’ Parkline Townhomes offer accessibility to everywhere you want to be with a living space you might never want to leave. Parkline, which takes its name from Winnipeg’s first street car to run up and down Osborne in 1891, is considered a Transit-Oriented Development (TOD), due to its close proximity to the new Fort Rouge Rapid Transit station. Located in South Osborne, Parkline is surrounded by everything from nature to nightlife. The area boasts some of the finest food and recreation establishments in the city, from Deseo Bistro to the Park Theatre. Residents can take a stroll along the river and over the Elm Park Bridge, and finish off with dessert at the BDI. And, with easy access to transit, residents can make their way downtown, while students are whisked away to the U of M. StreetSide Developments, a proud Qualico® company, has set the standard for high-quality condos and townhomes in communities across Western Canada. The company brings their innovation and distinction to Parkline’s 50 townhomes in five buildings on the corner of Hugo and Morley. The exterior expresses a modern, urban look using simple lines and conservative colours juxtaposed with bold build-outs in a contrasting dark colour. This contrasting element serves 64 | STYLE MANITOBA | SUMMER 2015
to reinforce the individuality of each of the privately owned, 1,000-square-foot townhouses. There are three floor plans showcasing different and functional layouts for residents to choose from. In the one-bedroom plan, the master suite is beyond expansive, taking up the entire second floor and boasting a large walk-in closet and spacious ensuite bathroom. The other two plans feature two bedrooms upstairs, and the spacious living layout of a house with the low maintenance of a condo. One unique element included in Parkline is the option to add an income suite in the basement of the Panorama plan. The townhouse has been designed to accommodate a second private entry for the income suite, and the suite would feature a kitchen, bathroom, and open living
area/bedroom combination. It’s a great living space for a student, single professional, or family member, and of course, it is incredibly helpful to have some additional income to assist with the mortgage. Since StreetSide is selling Parkline before the construction is complete, buyers will initially have the opportunity to meet with their design consultant in Qualico’s 3,500-square-foot design centre to custom design their interior from flooring to counters to paint colours. It’s a really exciting option for buyers, as their interior will be completely unique to them. To learn more about this landmark development and to receive floor plans and pricing, (which starts at $216,900 including GST), register online at www.parklinetownhomes.ca

Thanks to large upgraded windows from Jeld-Wen and numerous ceiling potlights, the great room is now awash in light and has great views to the outdoors.
It’s hard to believe that not long ago, this stunning bungalow was decked out in the country style oak cabinets, harvest gold tile flooring, Tyndall stone and track lighting typical of late 1980s home décor. That was then. This is now, thanks to a complete upgrade to the entire home by Parkhill Homes & Renovations.
walls were removed to completely open up the main floor and lower level. Parkhill Homes & Renovations sourced all their building supplies for this project from Springhill Lumber. Like many homes in the area, there had been movement in the structure due to soil settling.
Parkhill Homes & Renovations adjusted beams and straightened floors so new hardwood floors could be properly installed. “We also had to accommodate the additional demands of the updated heating, cooling and ventilation systems,” says Thorsteinson.
“This was a beautiful house when it was first built,” says Parkhill Homes & Renovations’ sales manager Lori Thorsteinson. “But it was definitely the owners’ intention to modernize it and make major updated improvements.” The homeowners had recently purchased the over 2,500-square-foot house specifically for the neighbourhood and gorgeous property. They wanted their home to reflect their personal style and be a warm and inviting hub for family and friends, so they enlisted the experienced team at Parkhill Homes & Renovations to help them realize their home’s potential. “The homeowners had a good sense of what they wanted,” says Thorsteinson. “We met with them at their home to further define their expectations and develop a proper scope of the work.” The construction phase consisted of completely gutting some areas, as well as insulation, electrical and plumbing upgrades. Several

A rich chocolate brown shade adds definition to the wall shared by the great room, kitchen and dining rooms, and accentuates the angled ceiling.
This distinctive glass accent wall was conceived and designed by Pauline Boisselle of For Space Sake, and created and installed by MPD Glass & Vinyl Graphics.
All the windows were replaced and in some cases, enlarged, to take full advantage of the home’s surrounding park-like views. With everything solidly in place, work turned to the interior. The homeowners wanted a statement-making front foyer to set the tone for the rest of the home, so they chose a unique front door that opens onto the gleaming solid hardwood flooring throughout most of the main level. “One of the most dramatic ways we modernized the home and opened it up was to remove the wall that previously separated the kitchen and great room areas,” says Thorsteinson. This introduced more light into these central spaces, both of which are now modern, warm and functional. The great room has a built-in entertainment unit and a unique glass wall panel. MPD Glass & Vinyl Graphics worked on this project with Pauline Boisselle from For Space Sake, who came up with the original concept and design for the custom piece. There’s no hint of harvest gold in the brand new kitchen, with its dark and light Kitchen Craft cabinetry, stainless steel appliances and fabulous light fixture from Robinson Lighting above the island. Carrara Tile & Marble installed the subway tile backsplash and solid surface granite countertops that beautifully tie all of the kitchen colours together. Replete with reverse osmosis water system and dual fuel stove, this kitchen has all the conveniences you could ask for. After all, when it comes to kitchens and bathrooms, “people want to feel organized and pampered in these spaces,” says Thorsteinson.

The master bedroom received many modern upgrades during the renovation: large windows, sound system, potlights and a tray ceiling to add visual interest. This is especially true of a master bedroom and ensuite. Parkhill Homes & Renovations took great care to provide all the creature comforts here. The master bedroom received a facelift with the addition of windows, potlights and tray ceiling. A reconfigured bedroom made way for the creation of a glorious 130-square-foot walk-in closet with loads of storage. The ensuite features heated ceramic tile floors and a custom glassed-in steam shower, all new cabinetry, lighting and plumbing fixtures.
A home automation system now allows the homeowners to conveniently control sound, temperature and lighting with the touch of a button. An extensive network of potlights and task lighting provide a modern ambience everywhere in the home.
The completely overhauled basement received the star treatment too, with large windows to let light into the fully open space, new carpeting in the media room and vinyl flooring for the exercise room.
This family can now relax and enjoy their beautiful home, which is now well positioned for the 21st century.
One bedroom was reconfigured to make way for this 130-square-foot walk-in closet with convenient and abundant storage.
“It’s these kinds of details that make your renovation a custom renovation,” says Thorsteinson. “The homeowners were very pleased with how it turned out.”

Sunshine, space and shopping Create Spa-like Tranquility at Home with a Freestanding Bathtub
If you’re on the hunt for a new bathtub, that means you’re in the enviable position of finding a bathtub that not only perfectly complements your space, but also perfectly suits your tastes and lifestyle. Let Robinson Bath Centre help you find the premium bathtub of your dreams. There are many different types of bathtubs to choose from. Most commonly known is the alcove bath, which is the three-wall enclosed style most of us grew up with. Then we have the drop-in bathtub that requires no walls but has a custom platform built up around the sides. Last but certainly not least, the freestanding tub requires no walls and instead stands on its own. If space allows, many people are partial to the freestanding bathtub because it exudes at-home luxury and a touch of deserved decadence. A freestanding bathtub draws attention and automatically becomes the focal point of any bathroom. Not only are they generous in their spaciousness, but also so aesthetically pleasing that they’re essentially artwork in their own right. For instance, BainUltra’s Evanescence™ 6636 freestanding bath can turn your relaxation space into a veritable sanctuary of elegance and wellness. With its flowing modern lines and thin walls, the Evanescence makes a great centerpiece for any bathroom. The Evanescence offers all the therapeutic
benefits of hydro-thermo massage, including better body-mind relaxation, relief of back pain, and improved circulation. The backrests support the head and nape of the neck, providing uniform heat all along the spine. It was designed using a process that gives it a seamless appearance, and thin concave walls. The Evanescence is a neatly compact tub intended for single-bather use, but is large enough for two to comfortably enjoy its therapies together. The cleanly styled interior, devoid of any accessories, gives the bather comfort and freedom of movement, while the spacious design allows for full body immersion. Freestanding bathtubs are dramatic and exude personality. They create spalike tranquility within the privacy of your own home, transforming your bathroom into a space that you truly want to spend time in. Creating your dream home is Robinson Bath Centre’s top priority. KITCHEN&BATH Granite Growth
It’s hard to compete with natural beauty. That’s one of the reasons exotic granite is making a big comeback as a top choice for countertops. Unlike quartz or marble, granite is truly heat resistant, and easily repaired if damaged. “It’s amazing what they pull out of the earth,” muses Jeremy Mathison, president of Western Marble, Granite & Tile (WMGT), the largest granite company in Manitoba. “No other hard surface is going to give you those unique swirls, waves, or textures. Even some of the imperfections, such as tiny pits, can be overlooked because the stone is just so pretty.” WMGT is the most technologically advanced granite and marble sales, fabrication, and installation company in Western Canada, and can assure clients that their countertops, even with multiple veins, will appear seamless. Utilizing laser templates and a specialized slab program, the company takes precision to an unmatched level that hand manufacturing could never come close to. “In two years we have gone from manual fabrication to fully digital,” states Mathison, adding that utilizing this technologically advanced equipment means they are the only company in the city that can output 16 kitchen countertops in a day. WMGT hosts the largest selection of wall samples in the province at their recently expanded showroom. The company’s cutting edge work can also be seen in over 95 percent of the city’s high-end showhomes.
Setting the Tone
With soaring vaulted ceilings, a view of the lake, and a two-storey waterfall in the great room, the kitchen had to match with this bright, contemporary home built by KDR Design Builders in Sage Creek. Modern flat, thermofoil, satin white cabinetry from Kitchen Craft lines the back wall and features brushed nickel hardware to mimic the stainless appliances, sink and faucet. Light fixtures are centered over each upper cabinet creating a backdrop to the chimney hood/range focal point. The kitchen’s whimsical light fixture draws your eye up to the high vaulted ceiling and back down to the island, which features maple Tuscan cabinetry and an irregular shaped angled white quartz countertop called Quartzforms Capri. “The simplicity in this design exudes a contemporary no fuss feel,” states Joan Harder, B.I.D., design and sales consultant with Kitchen Craft, adding the island has a rectangular block off the back to provide some balance to the countertop. “The selection of two tones in the kitchen is a trend that will continue into the next few seasons,” explains Harder. “In this case, the white brings a bit of contemporary into the mix and provides a nice opportunity for white and chrome stools to join the party. The Tuscan maple stain matches the trim work used throughout the house. The end result is a home that is ultra contemporary, yet warm.” SUMMER 2015 | STYLE MANITOBA | 75

Give it a Whirl
Do the wobbling white blades of an old plastic ceiling fan give you the chills? Let that image blow away with today’s modern fan. “Fans have come a long way from our old school brass and cane blade fans of the ‘80s,” states Alison Demare, BID, branch manager, Robinson Lighting Ltd., pointing to a popular line of Kichler fans that come in large variety of finishes from polished chrome, bronze variations, brushed nickel, and shades of white. They’ve also progressed in terms of function. Many fans are now available with remotes for better control, as well as being more energy efficient, an ideal option since it is beneficial to run a fan constantly to balance the temperature throughout a room. “Seek a lighting consultant to assist you in purchasing a fan to make sure that you select one that is appropriately sized for your room,” states Demare. “Make sure when selecting a fan that you choose one that has a good quality motor and moves enough air, which is measured in cubic feet per minute.” Along with keeping your indoors cool, fans are finding their way outside. Demare states Robinson Lighting even carries exterior fans designed for outdoor living - perfect for helping to cut down on the mosquitos that can ruin a nice summer night.

Did you know that the second largest use of energy in a home, next to space heating, is water heating? Installing Power Smart* low-flow plumbing devices in your home will help you reduce both water and energy consumption. Manitoba Hydro is offering a free Power Smart Water & Energy Saver Kit that can help you reduce your water and energy consumption, save money, and conserve our natural resources for future generations. Each kit contains: • Low-flow showerheads; • Low-flow faucet aerators; • Water heater pipe wrap; • Plumber’s tape; • Refrigerator/freezer thermometer. Installing the items in this Water & Energy Saver Kit can save you approximately $60 per year on your energy and water bills.†
POWER SMART LOW-FLOW STANDARDS Power Smart low-flow showerheads use approximately 1.5 gallons of water per minute (GPM) or 6 litres of water per minute (L/min), while other low-flow showerheads often use more. Low-flow showerheads in the market range from 1.5 GPM (6.0 L/min) up to 2.5 GPM (9.5 L/min). A Power Smart low-flow faucet aerator has a flow rate of 1.5 GPM (6.0 L/min), while a standard aerator has a flow rate of 2.25 GPM (9.0 L/min). Check the flow rate on your current aerators to see if they meet Power Smart standards.

DESIGN&DECOR The Times Are A Changin’
“Lighting changes so fast, especially when it comes to LED technology,” explains Super-Lite president and co-owner Simon Simkin, adding there’s usually new technology every three months, and new fixtures every six months. “LED is becoming a major force. Fifty percent or more of new products are dedicated LED fixtures.” He notes that even ceiling fans, usually the last category to embrace change, have adopted the popular lighting technology. Unlike traditional bulbs, LED light emits less heat and uses less power. A new selection of fans are just part of the summer stock making its way into Super-Lite’s 10,000-square-foot showroom on Waverley Street. The store’s space continues to undergo minor “makeovers,” creating ways to feature new products and keep displays interesting. Simkin points to Artcraft Lighting’s Bel Air pendant, featured here with copper ribbons and a chrome interior. Available in a variety of sizes and colours, the fixture has numerous home applications and casts a unique light effect, thanks to its curls. Along with the influx of new products is updated training. Simkin says since lighting changes so quickly, there’s always a learning curve for store staff who are constantly learning about technology, materials, and design to ensure customers are given the latest information. One thing that isn’t changing is the store’s tent sale; back by popular demand this June.

Larger Than Life
Brick, stucco, canvas, or drywall, Manitoba artist Mandy van Leeuwen has made her mark on it all. Specializing in murals, she can transform and personalize any space, big or small, with customized art inspired by you. Over the years, Mandy has worked solo or partnered with other Manitoba artists to create some of the iconic public murals seen around Winnipeg, such as “Welcome to Downtown” along Main Street which ushers travellers into the heart of the city, and the Harry Lehotsky tribute mural on Maryland. She has also created vibrant exterior works of art for private business, as well as working on projects at the Assiniboine Zoo, Fort Whyte Alive and Rainbow Stage. Lately, Mandy has enjoyed collaborating with homeowners on unique indoor murals. Kid’s spaces are particularly popular, as shown in this bedroom scene she created for a Lego-obsessed boy. She took some of his favourite characters and integrated them into a live room - a Lego helicopter “busts” through the drywall revealing blocks stacked behind, while the ceiling appears to have a large jagged hole with Emmet and his friends peering down. “Man caves” are another area of interest for the artist, who recently completed an expansive project that included creating large-scale landscapes that represented both North America and Africa. Whatever the inspiration, Mandy can work with clients to achieve a piece that tells their story, whether it be big or small. 80 | STYLE MANITOBA | SUMMER 2015
