the agenda Several weeks ago, I had a few hours to pass while waiting for my granddaughter to finish at an appointment near Mount Royal in St James - the area my late husband and I had lived in for many years raising our children. It was our wedding anniversary that day, and feeling nostalgic, I took a trip down memory lane and drove past our old house on Kane Avenue. The area was as verdantly beautiful as ever - a canopy of trees covering the street, flowers in bloom and birds chirping cheerfully. I remembered how much we enjoyed going for bike rides and walks while living there. One of our regular destinations was Assiniboine Park, where we often strolled with our granddaughter Zoe when she was a baby. The duck
pond was always a lovely place to sit for a while – here, we enjoyed watching her cooing and clapping at the ducks or toddling on the grass. Afterwards, we would usually grab ice cream at Sargent Sundae or stop in at one of the local eateries along Portage Ave. Perhaps our favourite haunt was Star Grill, where we frequently sat at one of the outdoor café tables, mostly because it was easy to park the stroller beside us. (Did I mention the food was always great here?)
(Look for a current review of this lovely little eatery on page 19).
Fast forward to June 2017…. When I picked Zoe up from her appointment, we were both hungry, and spontaneously decided to pop in at Star Grill for a bite. Oh – the memories! The interior still had that appealing astrological / spirit world vibe. Adding to that atmosphere, a new psychic was sitting at one of the tables ready to do a reading.
Speaking of stars, we are extremely proud to feature yet another Winnipeg born and raised celebrity as our cover story this issue – internationally acclaimed illusionist Darcy Oake. Check out Darcy’s amazing career and his family’s current philanthropic mission in Illusion Meets Reality (page 30). Along with our regular sections, other must-reads include Kelly Gray’s coverage on Oakbank in City Convenience, Country Lifestyle.
Owner Shirley Vlassie personally served us that day. She and I reminisced about days gone by, and realized that Star Grill and Style Manitoba had both opened the same year. In fact, we had reviewed her restaurant in Style’s first year of publishing. Imagine my surprise at seeing a framed copy of that 20-year-old review still gracing the restaurant wall after all these years!
Shirley did not know that my husband was no longer with us, nor did she know it was our anniversary that day. When we got up to leave, she would not allow us to pay for our meals – a lovely gesture on an otherwise bittersweet day. I could almost hear Gary whispering, “Happy anniversary babe – I didn’t forget!” In fact, you could say ‘the stars lined up’ that day.
And most important of all – summer has arrived! Get outside and enjoy the long, warm days ahead!

agle Custom Homes builds modern, practical family homes that are also made for entertaining. The builder offers many outstanding floor plans to choose from, all featuring lots of light and windows.
Let’s start our tour where most tours do: from the outside. Imagine you’ve pulled onto the wide concrete driveway, and peer up at this handsome structure’s exterior. With its low maintenance acrylic stucco and clean, linear façade, the home has a contemporary curb appeal.
With its open concept floor plan, glass railings and soaring ceilings, this three-bedroom, twostorey former showhome at 204 Bonaventure Dr. E. in Bonavista is an exceptional example of an Eagle Custom Homes build.
But there’s something a little different that makes this 2,053-square-foot design stand apart from its neighbours: a large covered balcony that extends out from the second level over the twocar garage.
“We built this home for the family that enjoys spending time at home and entertaining,” says Eagle Custom Homes’ president David Gurvey. “It’s luxurious, with unique features, yet it’s liveable and informal – qualities you want in a family home.”
“We had an opportunity to add the glassed-in balcony on the front instead of the back, so we took advantage of the space while respecting the neighbouring architecture,” says Gurvey.
6 | STYLE MANITOBA | SUMMER 2017
Crossing the front threshold and stepping inside through the double glass doors to the foyer, it’s
clear the builder’s intent was to let the light in. A bank of windows extends upwards - way up above the front door. This maximizes the natural light required to fill the voluminous 17-foot-high ceiling that runs from front to back. More glass exists on the main floor along the rear of the home, as well as above the entertainment unit in the family room. Twenty potlights illuminate the main floor space when transitioning into the evening hours. Despite the sheer available space and height that exists on the main floor, there’s no sense of feeling overwhelmed. The Eagle Custom Homes design team chose finishes to both ground and warm the main living area. These include bleached engineered oak hardwoods throughout, paired with a darker taupe paint on
5From the top of the central stairway, you can truly appreciate the home’s design and 17-foot-high ceilings. Not to mention the painting expertise of Men in White.
5Engineered oak hardwoods installed by National Flooring anchor and warm the entire main floor space.
5With its many windows, abundant potlights, and natural flow, the main floor space is perfect for family-friendly living.
4Low maintenance acrylic stucco and siding, combined with unique architecture, lends plenty of curb appeal to this home, built with materials sourced from Springhill Lumber and Kevin Marchand Contracting, who provided roofing, siding and soffits/ fascia. SUMMER 2017 | STYLE MANITOBA | 7

Once upstairs, you’ll find two spacious secondary bedrooms, each with a walk-in closet, and a generous master bedroom.
the tallest feature wall, and a maple entertainment unit in the living room. A fire in the gas fireplace casts a beautiful glow that reflects on the polished ceramic tile surrounding it.
The master suite is exactly that – replete with sitting area, huge walk-in closet and generously appointed ensuite. Here there is a glassed-in tiled shower stall, a vanity with more of the maple cabinetry found in the lower level, and dual sinks.
A subtle interplay of light, texture and colour makes for an easy visual transition from the living room to the kitchen and dining room areas. Here, white glossy acrylic and maple cabinetry, open shelving, quartz countertops and taupe tile backsplash create a modern, yet warm and welcoming space for entertaining and dining.
Remember that huge balcony in the front? It’s accessed from the master bedroom so the homeowners might enjoy their morning lattes in this private sanctuary. Glass panels along the front ensure adequate light filters into the bedroom during daylight hours.
Clever details, like the pantry built into the wall next to the kitchen island and conveniently across from the mudroom, speak to the functionality of this space. One can just enter the home from the garage/mudroom area, and unload groceries right into the kitchen pantry and fridge. An office/guest room and powder room round out the main floor. Ascending the wide, plush carpeted stairs to the upper level, you get a bird’s eye view of the main floor area, and a chance to further appreciate the home’s thoughtful and striking layout. Glass
5A carpeted staircase leads to the three bedrooms located on the upper level. The glass panels inset into the handrails allow light to flow through and offer a view every step of the way.
The home’s 1,000-square-foot lower level offers even more space options. With only one telepost to ensure an open layout, there’s enough room down here to accommodate a rec room, bathroom, storage and even two more bedrooms. This flexibility is perfect for growing, blended or multi-generational families. The home is completely wired for sound and light, and the basement walls are wired for installation perimeter plugs: a standard feature in an Eagle home build. offers an extensive list of standard options, many of which are considered upgrades by other builders. At the end of our tour of this fabulous home, you’ll want to know more about the builder behind it. Eagle Custom Homes’ strong industry reputation lies in their commitment to building quality homes, professional integrity and a vision focused on client satisfaction. “We will modify any of our standard designs to suit our clients’ homebuilding needs in Genstar communities or on any lot in Winnipeg, surrounding areas and cottage country,” says Gurvey.
5Taking advantage of available space at the front of the home, this spacious covered balcony off of the master bedroom provides a private retreat.
Representing the whole package, this showhome’s many assets wowed the many people who toured it. Its unsurpassed combination of features and affordability, combined with builder reputation made it easy for Eagle Custom Homes’ sales representative Fritz Pacag of Re-Max to sell this dream home to the new homeowners. Eagle Custom Homes is currently completing another showhome right down the street. Come September, it will be another opportunity for families seeking the perfect combination of space and luxuriousness.

About the Builder At every stage of the home build — from the first meeting, to when the foundation is poured, design selections made, walls erected and keys presented, and even beyond — the Eagle Custom Homes team is there for their clients. “We take a very hands-on approach to building houses,” says Eagle Custom Homes president/owner David Gurvey, who established the company several years ago following successes in the Winnipeg commercial market developing apartment and condominium homes. Gurvey’s commercial background has given him an extensive knowledge of building codes and processes. In total, the Eagle Custom Homes team has a combined 50+ years of construction experience. Clients benefit from this experience when the team brings this attention to detail and superior finishings to their single family home builds. To ensure quality, Eagle Custom Homes has its own concrete crew for concrete foundations. They also have standard specifications that are usually considered upgrades, such as painted ceilings, 60-gallon water tank, keypad garage entry, basement perimeter plugs and more. “We also have an optional upgrade to Polar Windows for all our homes,” says Gurvey. “Polar offers solid, energy efficient products and they are great partners to have.” With every type of build, ultimately, Gurvey says, “we work closely with our clients to make sure they get the home they desire.”

Marty Ballan, Winnipeg Great Spring issue! As always, I appreciate the recipe section and immediately tried out the Breakfast Bowls on my boys. They loved it! It would be great to see a bigger recipe section in future issues. Sienna Whitby, Winnipeg I love checking out the profiles featured in Style Manitoba. It was great reading about Steve Kirby (All Over the Map) this past issue – he has brought so much to the music community in Winnipeg, and so much to the U of M. We are fortunate to have a talented musician / educator of his stature here in Manitoba. The coverage on filmmaker Tyson Caron and his new movie Lovesick was also wonderful. It’s terrific that your magazine recognizes the importance of covering our local talent. Please keep it coming. Sarah Baldry, Winnipeg

Thanks to your magazine, my wife and I now have a much better idea of how we’d like to develop our landscape in the future. For the past couple years, Style Manitoba has featured some stellar landscaping editorials with gorgeous pictures, and we’ve been slowly collecting design concepts based mostly on what you’ve published. There are certainly some very talented landscapers in Manitoba – among them Prelude Landscaping, 3 Seasons and Silver Stone. When our new home is built, we will be reaching out to one of them to develop our outdoor space. In a province that suffers such harsh winters, we truly want to maximize our outdoor time in a beautiful space! Ken Johnson, Winnipeg Style Manitoba was a great source for my husband and I this spring, as we are currently shopping for a new home. We visited several of the showhomes featured in your spring issue, and have narrowed down our search to two locations. There are some very lovely new homes and housing developments in Winnipeg, making it really difficult to make a choice! Diane Beaudry, Winnipeg

Folklorama is excited to welcome over 400,000
visits this summer from August 6-19. The organization has been “celebrating diversity and cultural understanding” since 1970, when 21 pavilions set the foundation for one of the most successful summer events in Manitoba. Folklorama is still the largest and longestrunning multicultural festival of its kind in the world (as determined in 2010 by CIOFF, the International Council of Organizations of Folklore Festivals and Folk Arts). This year, 41 pavilions will showcase cultures from around the world over the course of two weeks at Folklorama through exhibits, performances, markets, and of course, with food and beverages. Each year there’s something new to see, taste, and experience as cultural communities continually refresh their pavilions. Folklorama 48 is thrilled to have the participation of the First Nations Pavilion and the return of the Indochina Chinese Pavilion.
The Folklorama Travel Guide is your best source of information on the festival and its pavilions. It includes detailed pavilion listings, locations, show times and hours of operations, a foldout map to help plan your route, as well as information on special events, contest details and other Folklorama programs. The Travel Guide is available online at folklorama.ca and can also be found at Manitoba Liquor Marts, Cambrian Credit Union branches, Vickar Automotive Group dealerships, 7-Eleven stores, and many other locations throughout Winnipeg and Manitoba. Experience Folklorama by trying a VIP Tour. VIP Tours allow you to see multiple pavilions in one night, bypass line-ups, and enjoy a progressive cultural meal. Choose from the various VIP Tour packages, like our VIP World Tours, VIP Late Night Tours; VIP Party Tours; or VIP Cycling or Walking Tours. Folklorama also offers customized tours for groups of 15 or more. Rally a group of friends, family or coworkers to create a unique Folklorama experience. Focus on a cultural region, base your tour on specific food and beverage preferences or let us put something together for you. Whatever interests you, Folklorama can make it happen.

Celebrate the start of Folklorama on July 29, 2017 at the annual Manitoba Liquor & Lotteries Folklorama Kick Off at a new location! The event starts at 4 pm at Memorial Park across the street from the Manitoba Legislative Building and will highlight the entertainment, teachings and traditions that can be found during the festival. The celebration will be hosted by personalities from CTV Winnipeg and Bell Radio. And this year will be the first year the Kick Off includes a cultural wine and beer area. “The Kick Off is an amazing, interactive event,” said Debra Zoerb, Executive Director of Folklorama, “It’s a great opportunity to celebrate the upcoming festival, get folks thinking about all the pavilions they want to visit, and to also see what Folklorama does all year long within our Talent and Teachings divisions. ”

Delectable Dining REVIEWED BY J.C. LAWLASS
PHOTOGRAPHY: MICHAEL ROBERTS
Quality ingredients, attention to detail Located at the corner of Portage and Mandeville St in old St James, the Star Grill is situated across from one of the most popular landmarks in the city, the Assiniboine Park Footbridge. It’s quickly evident that this is a favourite Sunday morning brunch spot for people taking a leisurely walk through the park or just enjoying the abundant green space on a warm summer day. A neighbourhood institution for over two decades, we asked owner Shirley Vlassie how she managed to compete all this time in an era of franchised restaurants. “It’s simple; I grew up in the hospitality business and along the way my father taught me the value of treating our firsttime customers as guests, and when they return, they come back as friends. There are people from the neighbourhood that have been coming here every week for the past 20 years and that makes them more than friends - it makes them family!” She notes that the Star Grill doesn’t buy from the giant food suppliers. “Being a small businessperson, I recognize the importance of buying everything fresh and locally from other small business owners.” It is values like these that have obviously worked well for the restaurant. For 21 years, the Star Grill has been committed to its firm belief that attention to detail with quality ingredients is the common link to their success. The décor is a simple fusion of the astrological and constellations of far off galaxies. Not surprising, stars adorn the walls amidst a variety of mirrors, while more silver stars grace every table, each topped with a deep blue tablecloth. The 45 inside tables exude a friendly atmosphere, while 17 café tables outside provide patrons with a view of the park. We were very impressed with the diversity of the menu, which clearly offers something for everyone. Here, vegetarians won’t be challenged to find something to their liking, while traditionalists will enjoy several burger options, including the Manitoba Panko Encrusted Pickerel Burger. The menu rounds out with a selection of Pastas, Asian Wraps, Sandwiches and Salads. Rather than listing Appetizers, the menu more appropriately offers ‘Sharing Plates’ of Calamari, Shrimp, Brie and Feta creations. But perhaps it’s the main entrees that impress the most, such as Grilled Salmon, Beef Tenderloin and one item in particular: Pecan Encrusted Chicken Breast with pure Manitoba maple cream.
But today, we are here for Sunday Brunch and we were not disappointed, as our two favourite items were on the menu: Corned Beef Hash and Traditional Eggs Benedict. To me, preparing Corned Beef Hash is a test of true culinary art. Sautéed slices of lean, bite-sized pieces of corned beef were accompanied by thinly sliced green and red peppers. Not to overpower the main ingredient, thin slices of red onion and mushrooms were a perfect accompaniment. All this laid on a bed of home-style golden brown pan-fried potatoes and topped off with two eggs in a style of our choosing. The fresh multigrain toast complemented with individual portions of preserves completed a wonderful presentation. (With a signature small carrot Star on the side!) As for Traditional Eggs Benedict, anyone who has attempted to make this dish knows it requires the careful orchestration of a hot buttered toasted English muffin, eggs poached perfectly, and creamy, unbroken Hollandaise sauce, all served hot at the same. I’m happy to report, the chef nailed it perfectly! As we left, the place buzzed with energy and was almost at capacity with satisfied patrons. We promised ourselves that next time we would try the sinfully appetizing desserts for two!

family business that began as a restaurant in 1942, evolved into a catering business called Naleway Catering and eventually into Naleway Foods, has gone back to its roots. Today, third generation Rob Naleway is making fresh, homemade perogies and selling them at two Perogy Planet retail outlets. Rob took over Naleway Catering in 2000, when he bought a 7000 sq. ft. building on Main Street. He carried on the tradition of his grandma’s cooking, making all products from scratch while continually making small improvements to the recipes and the services offered. The catering business continued to grow and in 2015, he opened his first Perogy Planet at 1411 Main Street. Last year, he opened another Perogy Planet retail outlet at 11-845 Dakota Street. Perogy Planet really came about by accident, Rob says, explaining that he began experimenting with different flavours in the kitchen of his main street building. Using fresh ingredients and Grandma’s original dough recipe, he came up with some inventive flavours. “We started thinking we should have another location for retail,” Rob adds. “We wanted a name that made it obvious what we are selling. Perogy Planet was born.” Offering the same quality food that Naleway Catering is known for, Perogy Planet specializes in fresh, from-scratch perogies ranging from old favourites such as cheddar and cottage cheese to new, not typically seen varieties like beef taco, pulled pork and even blueberry. Traditional fare such as cabbage rolls, sauerkraut buns and meatballs are also available, all made fresh and in house.

Among the wide range of menu items at Naleway Catering are specialty items such as fancy sandwiches. “We’ve always had fancy sandwiches,” says Rob. “A lot of people are saying how great they are, but they didn’t know Naleway Catering made them. So we want to let everyone know we have fancy sandwiches. While catering will always be part of the Naleway family brand, Rob says he is looking forward to seeing where the new venture into retail will lead. If family history is any indication, Perogy Planet is bound for success. For more information, go to perogyplanet.com

Rudy’s Eat & Drink
Set in the splendour of Fort Whyte’s urban nature reserve, this lakeside patio is a dream spot for fresh views and flavours. One of the biggest patios in the city lets you dine outside with friends all summer long next to the Manitoba Hydro building’s sleek urban garden. A brilliant menu will keep you coming back. Rudy’s specialty? Gourmet homemade versions of comforts made with fresh ingredients. Summer-proof bites include salsa slathered Haddock Tacos, as well as mini Reubens stuffed with corned beef, Swiss cheese, sauerkraut and house Russian dressing. It gets better: weekday specials sweeten the deal; Tuesday’s got tacos & tequila, and Saturday is date night with a very nice wine price.
Inferno’s Bistro
Pony Corral Pier Seven
Hungry for a French mouthful? This Winnipeg gem since 2003 serves up traditional plates like Veau Grand-Mère, rich with mushroom and white wine cream sauce, as well as Canard Confit à L’Orange, which invites you to supple confit leg of duck washed citrusy with orange gastrique. But it’s not all European flavour from Chef Fern Kirouac. Expect international treats like Sweet Curry or Coconut Thai. Enjoy it all with a cocktail or fine wine on their jazzy fenced-in summer patio vibrant with sun, lush greenery, fragrant lilac and cool shades. Don’t forget to ask about the summer talent showcases!
THE spot to dock for relaxation and beauty - for real - there are boat slips! Ah, the perks to having your tiki patio bar hug the Red River! Basking in the magic, you’ll enjoy generous servings of American/ Greek classics that have been Pony Corral’s signature since 1988. For appetizers, you name it — they’ve got it: French onion soup, ribs, chilli, nachos or calamari. There’s even a Seafood Loaf of French bread topped with crab pollock and baby shrimp baked in cheese and marinara sauce. Mains let you feast on the likes of veal, bbq ribs and jumbo shrimp. Friday and Saturday nights break out the mirror ball with hot hits and a light show.
Promenade Cafe & Wine 130-C Provencher Blvd
Another riverside wonder — this time from the French Quarter! Breathtaking is the only word for Promenade’s patio panoramic view, including the towering Canadian Museum for Human Rights, Esplanade Riel, the Forks, the Exchange District and gorgeous summertime sunsets. Luckily, the food is just as spectacular. Chalk that up to over 30 years in the kitchen for Shawn and Connie Brandson, whose menu of locally sourced from-scratch-style comfort food will leave you smiling. A weekly prix fixe menu lets you indulge in a scrumptious four-courser. Keep your ears open for live music by local favourites.

A study led by associate professor Nicole R. Keith, Ph.D., research scientist and professor at Indiana University, found that people with clean houses are healthier than people with messy houses. Keith and her colleagues tracked the physical health of 998 Americans between the ages of 49 and 65, a demographic known to be at an increased risk for heart disease. Participants who kept their homes clean were healthier and more active than those who didn’t. In fact, house cleanliness was even more of a predictor for physical health than neighborhood walkability. In 2011, researchers at Princeton University found that clutter can actually make it more difficult to focus on a particular task. Specifically, they found that the visual cortex can be overwhelmed by task-irrelevant objects, making it harder to allocate attention and complete tasks efficiently. The human body is made up of tens of thousands of integrated biological and neurochemical systems, all of which are – yes – organized. Many of our cells operate on strict schedules, or circadian rhythms. Even at the atomic level, we are well-regulated and well-organized. Without this organization, our bodies would collapse into chaos. Maybe we crave symmetry and cleanliness in our homes because it supports our physical state. Whatever the reason, staying clean and organized is a good thing. It helps us feel better about ourselves, it keeps us productive and it may very well keep us physically fit. Want to have a clean and organized home but just don’t have the time to keep it that way? Call Take Time Home Cleaning & Lifestyle Services to get an estimate.

From Dull to Dazzling To create this look, Chantal started by using KMS Cleansing Conditioner and prepped her hair with KMS Liquid Dust to help add volume. Goldwell Kerasilk Reconstruct Blow Dry spray was used to protect her hair from the heat of the blow dryer and flat iron. Summer is finally here, and along with it, socials, weddings and other special occasions to celebrate life’s milestones and happy times. Naturally, you’ll want to look and project yourself at your best on occasions such as these. Depending on the client, the staff at Rituals can provide what is on trend with hair and makeup, or you can opt for a more traditional look. A good consultation will help determine which style direction lies within a client’s comfort zone (consultations are complementary at rituals in hair and skin). Pictures speak a thousand words, so bringing photos along is very helpful for narrowing down the best approach for you on that special day! Booking a trial is also very important if you want to ensure a certain look ahead of time, leaving no question as to end results on the day of your event. In Cameryn’s case, the focus was bringing out her beautiful eyes with a smoky look. And less is more - her lips are softer and subtle. Hair artist Kirsten took advantage of Cameryn’s curly texture, giving her style the flashback feel of the ‘80s, with an update to 2017.

BOOKSHELF The Alphabet Thief (Groundwood) by Bill Richardson
What’s Bill Richardson been up to lately? Well, the much-loved and missed radio host has a new book of poetry for kids, but adults will enjoy the clever wordplay as well. It’s a light-hearted mystery about a thief who steals letters from the alphabet and the ensuing mayhem, as beer becomes bee, horses hoses, and “closets exploded/ as every broom became boom.” Will the Alphabet Thief get away with her nefarious thievery? With mischievous illustrations by Roxanna Bikadoroff.
The Gold
(Coteau) by David Carpenter A sweeping novel about the 1930’s gold rush of the Northwest Territories, and one man’s quest for more. We follow Joseph Burbridge, from his early days in an English mining town to the Canadian north, and the irrepressible characters who join him on his quest, to wealth and success of a sort in Edmonton. In David Carpenter’s sure hands, this story of one man’s life is a rollicking coming-of-age story, an epic adventure, and a morality tale about all that glitters.

Capturing the beat of the city.
An utterly charming story for younger readers (ages 9-11, although I loved it, too!) about a little white mountain goat living on a New York City rooftop. Two young friends (one is painfully shy and the other avoids heights and windows after his parents died in the Twin Towers) are determined to discover the truth about the rumoured ruminant, confronting their fears at the same time. Anne Fleming creates a magical Manhattan, complete with a screwball finish in Central Park. Delightful.

DEPECHE MODE Spirit (Mute/Sony) “People, how are we coping/It’s futile to even start hoping.” Those lines, from the closing “Fail,” confirm the darker turn in Depeche Mode’s music. Songwriter Martin Gore has turned outward in Spirit, foregoing his musings on lust, doubt and guilt for a dour assessment of corrupted civilization that’s “going backwards,” as he avers. Luckily, the songs rise above such heavy gravity, with an easy accommodation of drums and guitars to excite the band’s signature electronic patterns – those enjoy more space in the deluxe edition’s half-hour disc of mixes – and stirring work from Dave Gahan, an ever more persuasive singer.

VANGELIS Earth (Vertigo/Universal) Long before the Chariots of Fire soundtrack brought half his name to fame, Greek multi-instrumentalist Vangelis Papathanassiou drew a cult following for 666, a sprawling concept album by his band, Aphrodite’s Child. Thirteen discs from his prodigious industry are available now in a box set, but most are issued individually as well, beginning with his startling solo debut from 1973. Earth is elemental and sophisticated in the same heartbeat. Impatient, thumping drums push the wild lead guitar of former bandmate Argiris ‘Silver’ Koulouris to open, only to introduce warm, trancelike keyboard music and keening wood flute over pulsing percussion, with Koulouris’s skittish lute playing implying another link to a mysterious past. Soon, before textures and temperature shift again, there is the astounding “He-O” – as simple and impenetrable as a venerable folk song, with startling piano. Vangelis oversaw the remastering, and every detail is revived thrillingly.
MAN Original Album Series (Parlophone Import) This is big fun in a budget package. Through the ‘70s, Welsh band Man bounced between crowd-rousing boogie and studious progressive rock. Be Good to Yourself at Least Once a Day, the first of these five records released in North America, captured both sides, with Phil Ryan’s keyboards in “C’mon” and the chugging guitars of Micky Jones and Clive John in “Life on the Road” nestling comfortably. The later two albums trust to sturdier rock, while early, extended tracks such as “Alchemist,” from 1970, explore and never bore. Packaging is minimal, with each disc in a single sleeve, minus credits, but at less than $30 this is a bargain and then some. A second packet of five, at the same beguiling price, favours their legendary live music.

Illusion meets reality
I
t’s a long road from Lindenwoods to the world stage, but this is just what Winnipeg boy Darcy Oake has done. Oake is an internationally acclaimed illusionist whose career has taken off, thanks to a spectacular and edgy stage style that has taken him and his audiences to surprising new places.
Oake is now on a touring schedule that has seen him hit a constant stream of dates and venues over the past three years. He suggests that it all started when his father, hockey broadcaster Scott Oake, blew his mind with a ‘pick a card’ trick back when he was a mere seven years old. Darcy admits that one trick was all it took to hook him on magic. By age 10, the young Oake had put together a small performance using sleight of hand and illusion, and was soon on the kids’ birthday party circuit with a first show at the St. Norbert McDonald’s. “I stood in the corner at the back and did tricks for a small group of boys and girls while the restaurant hummed,” he says, remembering the busy restaurant packed with a lunch crowd. The memory of that first show is one that tells just how far he has come. By age 16, Oake was competing in events such as the Pacific Rim Professional Stage Challenge and the People’s Choice Award. His skill had him win both events and saw him head off to the iconic Magic Castle in Hollywood. Here he scored big as the club’s headliner, something that was not even legal given the fact he was just 18, four years under the legal age to even enter the building where liquor was served.
Photo: Matt Barnes 30 | STYLE MANITOBA | SUMMER 2017
“The exposure at The Magic Castle was a great springboard and got me noticed,” he says, remarking that over the next few years he
would take the stage in 25 cites with 77 shows. “This brought more bookings and I found myself traveling to Vegas and New York, as well as Europe and Asia.” Then in 2014, the producers of Britain’s Got Talent - an ITV show with some 200 million viewers - saw his presentation in Paris and they invited Oake to participate in the acclaimed London-based talent event. “They saw my dove illusion and told me they had never seen anything like it. I had been working cruise ships and touring around, and thought their offer was just a cattle call. At first I declined. But they kept calling and finally persuaded me to come on board.” The spotlight has remained bright. In 2016, Oake was a guest performer in America’s Got Talent, but this event paled compared to an evening where he performed before the Royal Family at a private dinner. He suggests that his popularity in the UK (and elsewhere) has much to do with the freshness of his performance. “I do stage illusions and this is something not often seen anymore. There is a whole generation who have not seen this type of act and are open to its spectacle,” he says, pointing to his now famous Dove Illusion, where he produces a cage full of birds from what seems like thin air. In fact, the bird trick earned him kudos from entertainment heavies like Simon
Cowell, who suggested that his performance on Britain’s Got Talent showed the birth of a new entertainment star.
Creating positive change is no illusion This June, Oake brought the magic to the stage at ‘The Burt’ with his unique blend of traditional illusion combined with edgy modernity. His Edge of Reality shows have sold out venues and attracted wide attention with audiences left shaking their heads in amazement. At his recent Winnipeg events, Oake not only worked to astound attendees, but also sought to create greater awareness for the Bruce Oake Recovery Centre, a Winnipeg-based treatment facility named after his brother who succumbed to a heroin addiction after failed treatment. The facility initiative is spearheaded by The Bruce Oake Foundation, an organization created by the Oake family to move its goal of a worldclass treatment and recovery centre forward. Darcy will donate the proceeds from his June Winnipeg shows to help kick-start this muchneeded facility. Citing the group’s mission statement, Darcy says, “The Bruce Oake Recovery Centre is a long-term, residential treatment centre for adult males suffering from drug and alcohol addiction. The Bruce Oake Recovery Centre operates as a registered not for profit organization
with charitable status,” he adds, noting that the centre provides addiction treatment, as well as the resources and skills necessary for those harmed by addictive substances to successfully re-enter society. According to Darcy, The Centre is based on Calgary’s Fresh Start program, where there are no wait times or cost to participate.
Photo: Danielle Baguley
“There is a significant need for a treatment facility of this nature in Winnipeg and Manitoba. Existing treatment facilities have waiting lists in excess of a month or more. We aim to significantly reduce the wait for treatment to those who need help,” he explains. “We need to dramatically change how we look at this problem,” says Oake, noting that for every dollar society invests in a drug treatment facility, there is a payback of $23 in reduced costs within the justice and healthcare systems. “The challenge is no illusion. The opioid crisis is gaining momentum and we are seeing death counts rise. In fact, Manitoba’s Office of the Chief Medical Examiner show the number of deaths linked to the drug Fentanyl has nearly doubled in the last two years. It’s expected this number will be even higher this year. People cannot hide their heads in the sand. This crisis is impacting people you know and people you love. The experience of my family is a cautionary tale, but one that is happening to other families throughout Manitoba and across the country. The Bruce Oake Recovery Centre is our way of stepping up to meet this problem head on and create positive change within society. Be part of this change.” Darcy invites Manitobans to visit www.bruceoakerecoverycentre.ca. and www.darcyoake.com to discover the illusionist and his vision for drug awareness and treatment. T
he Magdalen Islands, a long, skinny, windswept archipelago in the vast Gulf of St. Lawrence, is a part of Quebec, but feels remote and isolated, with a completely unique culture and French accent, or accents, as the lilt changes from one community to the next. We awaken to sunshine streaming into our room at La Butte Ronde bed and breakfast on Havre-aux-Maisons Island, Îles-de-la-Madeleine. We arrived in the dark the night before, after taking a series of smaller and smaller planes via Quebec City and Gaspé. Our B&B is in a converted schoolhouse, painted a vibrant teal blue and beautifully appointed with large windows, sitting areas amongst the greenery, and a grand piano. A welcoming veranda offers views to the sea in the distance.
We are anxious to explore the intense natural beauty of red cliffs, sweeping beaches, and dramatic sand dunes, and sample delicious food from the sea and the land. Over breakfast, a cheese omelette prepared with local Pied-de-Vent cheese, Nadine LeBlanc, our host, fills us in on some history of the islands. Her family was among the Acadians expelled from Nova Scotia in 1755. Like others, her family remains fiercely proud of their Acadian heritage. The numerous Acadian flags blowing in the wind around the islands bear witness to this. Six islands are connected by impressively long stretches of sand dunes, with several other small islands nearby. A small population of 12,000 lives in picturesque villages that dot the serpentine string of islands. The dramatic red cliffs are one of the main natural attractions, and the intense winds make it a kite-surfer’s paradise. The Micmacs frequented the islands to hunt seal and walrus long before the first European explorers arrived, Jacques Cartier in 1534 and Samuel de Champlain in 1629. Along with the Acadians, the islands were populated by surviving passengers from hundreds of shipwrecks that occurred along every coast. We take Nadine’s cue and head north along a narrow causeway, huge waves crashing on one side and splendid beaches extending on the other, past a salt mine (the islands rest on enormous salt domes) to Grosse-Île and

Grande Entrée, which were first inhabited by Anglophones shipwrecked while coming from Scotland, Ireland and England. The Seal Interpretation Centre describes the Gray Seal and the Harbor Seal and their habitat. In March, one can take a helicopter excursion to view the Harp Seals, who come to the ice floes around the islands to birth their young. With a hankering to experience the long expanse of beach, we head to Old Harry, where in late September, we have the endless Grande Échouerie beach practically to ourselves. Here we delight in the adorable sandpipers poking on the water’s edge and seals bobbing nearby. Famished after our breezy hike, we make our way to the main island, Cap aux Meules, to its finest restaurant, La Table des Roy, where we feast on locally caught lobster turned into a Thai-flavoured bisque, followed by delectable sweetbreads with lobster tail, scallop and celery root for my husband, and crusty halibut with a juniper berry foam and salad of fennel and crab for me. Extraordinary. Chef Johanne Vigneau, whose family has lived in this old house-turned-restaurant for generations, has also opened a gourmet shop and cooking school, Gourmande de nature, where the next day we pick up unique ingredients like purée of églantine (rose hips), enormous marblesized fruits that we come across on a stroll along the nearby coast at l’Anse de l’Étang du Nord.
The Magdalen Islands are perfectly equipped for hungry travellers, with just the right mix of specialized food producers. Down the road from our B&B is the renowned cheese company, La Fromagerie du Pied-de-Vent. From the unique Canadienne breed of cows, which produce a low yield of milk high in fat, we can watch Jérémie Arseneau and his team create a range of cheeses from the unpasteurized milk, including Pied-deVent, named for the special rays of sunlight that frequently splay onto the ocean through breaks in the cloud, leaving a sunny footprint. Le Fumoir d’Antan, run by another Arseneau family, is the only herring smoke house left (there were 40 in the early 20th century), housed in a handsome wooden barn, which also functions as an informative museum with a lively guide. A jar of intensely flavoured herring and wedges of cheese form the basis for picnics on our hikes the following days. Other producers on the islands include a goat cheese maker, a wild boar farm that produces a lovely paté, and a craft brewery, À l’abri de la Tempête. Another day we enjoy a gorgeous bowl of mussels simmered in said beer at sunset at La Moulière in the Domaine du Vieux Couvent, which also offers sumptuous accommodations. As we make our way north to south, the hilly landscape nearly treeless, we pass villages dotted with the cutest wooden houses, painted in vivid colours, placed in a seeming hodgepodge, each one facing the sea so that families are able to watch for fishermen returning from the day’s expedition. The red cliffs on both south and north coasts are jaw-droppingly spectacular, our favourites being the beach walk at La Dune du Sud, where we can see up close the incredible way the wind, rain and salt have eroded the red sandstone; and the dramatic cliffs at La Belle Anse, where we watch from above as the waves crash ferociously, creating crevices, caves and giant holes in the rock. I pull my scarf around my head, looking just like my baba -- my best protection from the fierce wind. The decline of the local fishery has given way to a rise in tourism, with artisans springing up all over the islands, among them glass-blowers, jewellers, potters and painters. As we enter La Méduse, a glass-blowing shop, in search of a souvenir, the wind blows the door shut behind us. “It’s only going to get windier,” says the shopkeeper, laughing. Artists Nicole Gregoire and Albert Cummings and their family even turn sand into objets d’art at Artisans du Sable. And with 300 km of sand around, why not?
We’ve made it to Havre-Aubert Island on the southernmost spit of the archipelago, to the oldest settlement, La Grave, in search of the deepest history of the islands, and hopefully some live music.
We come in from the wind to Café de la Grave, a popular music destination. The place is homey and relaxed, oozing atmosphere. Here locals congregate for coffee and cake, or a full meal with beer on tap.
La Grave itself is charming and quiet, with a pretty protected harbour. Here the architecture is the more typical style of the past, sombre grey shingled houses bordered in yellow, blue or red still beautiful and perched haphazardly over the barren landscape. More of them line the main drag of La Grave, now home to artisan shops and cafés.
This is the former general store where original shelves are still lined with knick-knacks and goods. In the corner stands the famous piano that is apparently played at some point every day. Next to it are an accordion and microphone.
Auberge chez Denis à François, in a handsome yellow house, offers palatial rooms overlooking the water and serves scrumptious meals, such as chaudrée, or clam chowder. We are captivated by the nearby Musée de la Mer, where we learn about the history of the fishery, the harsh conditions and the cultural aspects of life.
It’s clear that most of the patrons are regulars, laughing and talking. We linger, sampling pot en pot, a seafood casserole topped by a pastry crust, while my husband dares to try loup-marin, or seal meat. We sip on the local beer from À l’abri de la Tempête and luck out as a film crew sets up to record a local musician who tinkles the ivories. As we enjoy the music and our meal, we reflect on these hearty souls and the fervent pride they take in their unique Madelinot culture.

but they desired a sunny escape in the front yard. They enlisted the professional landscape team at 3 Seasons Landscaping to completely transform their yard into the inviting vignette they were looking for.
The homeowners do have a largely shaded backyard where they spend part of their time,
“Front yards can offer excellent opportunities to add curb appeal or additional outdoor living space,” says Paul Szakacs, landscape designer with 3 Seasons, an award winning,
layful curving flowerbeds and pathways, masses of plants, a private patio space – these are the hallmarks of a backyard garden retreat.

full service landscape design, construction and maintenance company. Balance was key to the success of this space. “We decided on a multi-layered design that would give the homeowners different vantage points and angles,” says Szakacs. “It’s not a big dense garden, or overbuilt with hardscaping.”
OUTDOORL I V I N G The 3 Seasons team built several wide terraces, including a walkway that gradually leads from the driveway to the front door. At the midway point, they constructed a circular patio of Roman pavers from Barkman Concrete. With Roman Pisa stones, they built retaining wall planters to flank the patio and filled them with masses of tall perennial plants like delphinium, Shasta daisy and purple coneflower to provide privacy. Natural black granite boulders added among the plants lend texture and interest. The homeowners wanted a low-maintenance garden in a showy, cool palette of pinks, whites, blues and purples to create colour and interest all season long. 3 Seasons delivered by selecting perennials that were then layered and staged according to height and size. Large foundational plants are incorporated closer to the home, with shrubs like hydrangea, Diablo ninebark and dwarf Korean lilac in the middle, and shorter plants like sedum, lady’s mantle and daylily toward the front. “We did repeat mass plantings so the gardens don’t appear cluttered,” says Szakacs. “This helps the yard to read cleaner from the street. We also used mulch and weed barrier so the yard is low maintenance despite having lots of plants,” he explains, adding that they strategically left some grassed areas along the edges to accommodate snow graders and debris. The 3 Seasons team returns every year to help maintain parts of the garden by pruning shrubs, exposing the mulch and adding annuals to provide more summer colour. “Design and planning were critical to make sure everything – pathways, patio, plants – all looked cohesive,” says Szakacs. The result? “We created a showy garden in the middle of suburbia.” This one-of-a-kind yard garnered a 2016 Landscape Manitoba Award of Merit. More importantly, the homeowners are thrilled with their forward-looking space, which allows them to enjoy the view and entertain their visiting grandchildren. Turns out, they like this beautiful yard, too.

Seeing the light Ambience. Curb appeal. Safety. The right landscape lighting can add these and many other appreciable qualities to a property, and extend enjoyment of a yard into the evening hours during our short summers. Since 1950, Super-Lite Lighting Ltd. has helped their clients see the light, all year round, with helpful advice and quality products. The Winnipeg-based company has done jobs all over the world, but 95% of its business is here in Manitoba. “This is our home,” says Super-Lite president Simon Simkin. “Having a thorough understanding of our extreme climate gives Super-Lite the advantage of offering service and products to suit the needs of professional landscapers and DIY-ers.” They can offer advice honed by years of experience. For example, Simkin suggests that underlighting a yard is better than overdoing it. “After installing a landscape lighting system, it’s best to live with it a while,” says Simkin. “It’s easy to add on afterwards.” Similarly, Simkin suggests living with a newly planted landscape to get a better appreciation of how plants are growing and how garden beds look.
Even in winter, some thought should be given to the interplay of landscaping lighting against a reflective, snow-white background. “By adding a dimmer to a lighting system, you won’t overlight your yard,” notes Simkin.
Whether uplighting a tree for dramatic effect, or adding light to guide safely from points A to B, Simkin says clients can rely on Super-Lite to provide rugged, warrantied landscape lighting products, from companies like Kichler. “That’s the value-added advantage we bring to outdoor landscaping projects.”

In as little as two weeks, you can enjoy gatherings of friends and family around this unique, yet practical feature on your patio. Watch from all angles as the flame dances across the table. A glass wind guard option is available for tables located in more open spaces. In addition to outdoor fire tables, Classic Fireplaces carries many patio products to suit your outdoor lifestyle. OUTDOORL I V I N G Small Space Gardening Container gardening is the application of growing plants (including edible plants) selectively in containers instead of planting them in the ground. This style of gardening has come full circle, especially for those with small outdoor spaces. Growing your own decorative flowers, herbs and vegetables has become a viable option for people that delight in the art of gardening but lack the space, or simply want to add colour and natural beauty to their surroundings. This type of gardening is achieved using containers like pots, window boxes, baskets or hanging baskets, and barrels to name a few. These are generally found on porches, patios, rooftops, front steps and balconies, and in sunrooms or urban locations. Even vertical gardening on walls is happening – in fact, it has become a growing trend. Container or pot planting provides a healthy environment for plants as it offers low risk of soil disease, great weed control, and ease of mobility, which ultimately provides gardeners more control over moisture, sunlight and temperature. These options can be a real asset for success in growing herbs, vegetables or flowers, not to mention design flexibility.
There’s nothing like a well-placed grouping of planted pots to add a little drama to your space!
A few tips to successful container gardening: First, you should wash the pots/containers thoroughly before planting. Second, the soil should be a proper mix of ingredients that allows for holding the water while allowing

for good drainage. No worries there, most garden centres carry pre-formulated soil mixes specifically for containers. Choosing what you want to plant is next, and this is most gardeners’ favourite part, as they can custom design what they grow for food consumption and/or visual gratification. Either way, container gardening is here to stay, which is a great thing for those with smaller outdoor spaces.

“It’s custom built to fit right from the get-go, which speeds up installation times,” explains Sarens. Glastar Sunrooms are installed on a special floatation system that’s unique to the industry. Engineers have certified the non-pile foundation system developed by SunShade for our soil conditions.
“Our customers’ desire to have that protected outdoor living area is the same as when we started,” says Sarens. “But, like homes, the shapes and sizes have changed and our sunrooms are quite a bit larger now.” Over time, SunShade has responded to changing trends by developing and refining their sunroom systems. As manufacturer and installer, each Glastar Sunroom is specifically designed for each project.
“If you don’t know how to build on our Manitoba gumbo, the ground will shift and your glass will break,” says Sarens. The beauty of ordering a local product also means that it’s adapted to our conditions. Sarens notes that changing weather patterns, with more intense periods of rain, led SunShade to alter their Glastar door tracking system to stay watertight during deluges.
While SunShade staff members are happy to provide information and advice to do-ityourselfers who want to install Glastar products themselves, “most people see the value in us installing the whole system, from top to bottom,” says Sarens. “We ensure a problemfree install and fully warrantee everything.” Prospective clients are encouraged to view examples of Glastar Sunrooms, screen enclosures and wall systems built in their neighbourhoods. “Some of our former customers do a better job of selling our products than we do,” laughs Sarens, who adds that they welcome opportunities to give interested clients tours of SunShade’s manufacturing facility on Sutherland Avenue. “One client recently told me, ‘I’ve never seen a company as transparent as yours.’” That’s an important compliment for this family company that’s been dedicated to enhancing homes and lifestyles for over 40 years, says Sarens. “We’re working on improving on their home – the biggest investment they’re likely to make. We take it very seriously.”
Thanks to solutions born of necessity, SunShade’s clients can rest assured their Glastar Sunroom will stand the test of time. “It’s rewarding when we hear from clients who had their sunroom system installed 20 years ago who say that it works as good as new,” says Sarens, who proudly adds that the company SUMMER 2017 | STYLE MANITOBA | 41

IDEAL URBAN LOCATION
A
n exciting new address in the Exchange District welcomes residents at the same time as the Cultural District heats up with programming all season long. District Condominiums’ 139 Market, the final phase in a series of historic buildings converted into brand-new loft residences by StreetSide Developments, is set to be completed with ongoing possessions this summer. Boasting an incomparable location in the heart of the East Exchange District – across from the Manitoba Theatre Centre, steps from Stephen Juba Park and all the shops and entertainment nearby – the rewards of District Condos’ 139 Market only begin with its ideal urban location. Downtown commuters can ditch traffic jams in favour of walking or riding to work, strolling to Jets games, and meeting pre-game at any of the most destination worthy restaurants in the neighbourhood.
While maintaining the century-old building’s charms including original brick and timber beams, StreetSide Developments has created 30 distinct floorplans at 139 Market spanning 64 loft homes – each with their own unique exposure and original character details, paired with modern finishes. Blending the character of the past with the amenities of today, District balances old-world flair with brand-new cabinetry, sparkling oversize triple-pane windows, glistening quartz countertops in its kitchens, and luxury vinyl plank flooring throughout each suite. District 139 Market’s livability goes beyond its modern finishes and open studio, one- and two-bedroom plans by offering residents access to a common rooftop terrace, well-equipped exercise room and lounge, plus the limited opportunity to purchase a private rooftop patio to call your own.
Sixteen rooftop patios are designated for use by their lucky purchasers exclusively, to flaunt their very own views of the downtown skyline and decorate their own private outdoor retreats. District 139 Market joins the completed 110 and 132 James Ave. District Condos’ buildings, as well as the neighbouring 133 Market Ave., to offer a combined total of nearly 150 downtown residences. Walking and cycling access to treasured landmarks and summer experiences like enjoying a wine flight at The Forks, taking in a game at Shaw Park, sipping local beer brewed at PEG Beer Co., and visiting Old Market Square for free live entertainment - these are just some of the adventures that await new District owners each and every summer. With studio apartment-style condos starting from just $158,900 including GST, there couldn’t be a better time to start soaking up the summer in the Exchange. uxedo Point offers much to those seeking an entry into the excitement that surrounds recent developments in Winnipeg’s rapidly growing southern quadrant. Meeting the need is Towers Realty Group, who alongside PreCon Builders is constructing the Oxbow condominium properties in the Tuxedo Point neighbourhood that stands along Sterling Lyon Parkway. Adjacent to the city’s newest shopping experience, Seasons of Tuxedo and its new Outlet Collection Winnipeg, and across the street from a wealth of front line retail stores, Oxbow is now into its second phase following highly successful sales of its first slate of condos. The new phase is Oxbow2 at Tuxedo Point. Upon completion, the Oxbow2 condo development will be a six-storey building with 99 units located along Sterling Lyon Parkway near Shaftesbury Blvd. Expectations are that the new complex will begin construction next year and presales are set to begin this summer. The principals report that units range in size from 794 square feet to over 1,600 square feet. The building features one bedroom units with walk-in closets and ensuite bathrooms, one bedroom and den units with an ensuite plus a half bath, multiple two bedroom, two bath layouts, and a number of two bedroom plus den layouts to choose from. The building will also introduce four new or upgraded suite types to Tuxedo Point. For example, The Burrows Suite design has been slightly modified from the previous building (Oxbow of
Tuxedo Point) to include an additional half bath. The Harbour Suite - one of the more popular floor plans from Towers’ Oxbow on the Seine property - introduces a two-bedroom, two-bath unit that offers over 1,200 square feet. The new south Winnipeg condo site also offers the Birch Suite - a brand new two-bedroom, twobath plan at 1,100 square feet. And designers have expanded and improved the Devonian 2 Suites featuring two beds, two baths and a den, which are now available up to 1,625 square feet, making this the largest footprint for any of the Oxbow units.
The development features a beautiful treed pet friendly courtyard for all residents of Tuxedo Point, where community focused environmental design is an integral part of the overall plan. For more information, visit oxbowcondos.com
With large ample floor plans, designers have been able to accommodate a host of amenities in each of Oxbow2’s condos. Each suite comes with multiple finishing options with choices of flooring, cabinetry, and counter tops in either granite or engineered quartz with glass or ceramic backsplash tile options. There are options for carpeting in bedrooms and closets, and suites include central air conditioning, forced air heating, and even in-suite high efficiency stackable laundry pairs. These types of amenities help push the envelope, making Oxbow2 at Tuxedo Point a residence that has something for everyone. Indeed, the property is located steps away from Fort Whyte Alive and Assiniboine Forest for nature lovers, and minutes from Winnipeg’s new outlet mall on Sterling Lyon parkway for the fashion forward. From the new outlet mall, to dining and entertainment, Tuxedo Point is surrounded on all sides by options for people of all ages.

City convenience, country lifestyle So near, yet so far away, Oakbank is offering what could be the cure for hurried urban lifestyles. This gem of a community is just 15 km east of Winnipeg, but a world away in terms of serenity and space. Located on Highway 206 in the Springfield Municipality, Oakbank is home to more than 5000 residents who have made the move here not just for its schools, amenities and wide range of housing options, but for the quieter country lifestyle as well. Historically, Oakbank has covered a lot of ground. Starting off as the site of a post office in 1899, Oakbank’s progress has been a slow steady process. With the coming of the CPR the town grew and a new train station made
the area more of hub. In 1964, it became the central focus for education with the municipality moving its K to 12 facilities into Oakbank. Today, the town is still locally important, but much of its population looks to Winnipeg for jobs. As such Oakbank is characterized as a bedroom community, where many residents commute for employment, but stay for the lifestyle. “People have discovered that you get a lot of value for your money in Oakbank,” says realtor Connie Kosky-Levesque, President, The Property Exchange Group Inc. “People are getting a lot of bang for their buck here. Properties have large lot sizes, there are great schools, and there are always activities going on, from snowmobiling to horseback riding events. There are many community activities like ‘Chicken Daze’, a fun weekend event for the community,” she says, adding that there are pancake breakfasts darned near every weekend. “We also have very active community clubs in this RM. The town is home to banks, dental and medical clinics, restaurants, grocery stores, gas stations as well as a library and facilities for those who are 55 plus. A big bonus is Birds Hill Provincial park is just down the road, offering year round fun! Oakbank offers every kind of service you could ask for and then some. Here, it’s all about lifestyle and getting back in touch with those things that are impor-

tant. This is a family friendly community where services are just a short walk up the street, and people are often surprised at how affordable new homes are in the area.” According to Connie, the cost to build in Oakbank is the same as it is anywhere in the province. “It’s the land cost that helps make home ownership more accessible. We don’t have the same kind of taxes that residents of Winnipeg have. For example, there is no development tax and the basic property taxes are lower. This brings the cost of acquisition down and lowers a family’s annual expenses,” she explains. As a lifetime resident of Oakbank, Kurtis Brown, Marketing Ambassador, Oakbank Credit Union, has seen many changes through-
out the rural community. The Credit Union was established in 1946, when local area residents banded together to form a cooperative to provide financial services to its small community. This cooperative model and tradition continues today with the Credit Union providing personal and commercial services to not only Oakbank, but to other rural municipalities such as East St. Paul, Brokenhead, and even Winnipeg. Today, Oak Bank Credit Union has three physical locations: Oakbank, Birds Hill, and Dugald. “We are a full-service institution that is proud of our community involvement. You can live here and do your business here. It is thanks to the great community support we’ve been fortunate to receive all these years that allows us to remain a cornerstone of the community,” says Brown. “Growing up in a smaller community, you really see and feel the impact of change over the years,” he adds. From humble beginnings to millions in assets today, Oak Bank Credit Union has evolved into an integral part of the community offering basic financial services, such as simple account openings and mortgages, to more intricate commercial financing and investments. The credit union has also been central to many development initiatives, such as their commitment to Springfield Place, a facility offering assisted living and support for seniors that is located off Main Street in Oakbank. “Together, with our trusted partner Concentra, we provided a $20,000 donation that was instrumental in building a new commercial grade kitchen for the complex. We also play an integral role in the non-profit housing co-op Dugald Estates. Our local roots and streamlined organizational structure allow us to quickly and efficiently make moves that positively impact our neighbours,” he says, adding that they also help raise funds for local food banks, as well as civic improvements, such as flowerpots and streetscaping efforts. Brown highlights that future development plans for Oakbank are extensive, with active
construction projects currently taking place; developers and new home builders are finding lots of opportunity in the area. Here, Connie Kosky-Levesque mentions that sites such as Crystal Lake and Aspen Lake have been highly popular with the buying public. “Properties are affordable and attractive to a wide range of people. We have a good selection of homes, from side by side townhomes to luxurious lake fronts,” she says, mentioning a $350,000.00 new build in Crystal Lake that sits on an ample corner lot amid gorgeous executive homes. Crystal Lake was the late Robert Handler’s idea. He was a man who saw the potential in the area back in the early ‘70s. Robert then formed Oakbank Ventures, a company that would become Crystal Lake Development Ltd., to get the project underway. Today there are some 500 lots in the nearly fully subscribed neighbourhood. According to son Micheal Handler, who now spearheads the company, he was involved in the development from an early age. “I would head out to the land with my father when I was maybe 13 years old. We would park by the old airstrip, and I would hold the tape measure and my father would write down numbers.
That was around 1971-1972. We started work in 1974-1975,” says Micheal. “The concept for Crystal Lake has been to create a community that offers something for everyone,” he notes. “What you won’t find is a standardized development where everything looks the same. We have been fortunate to associate ourselves with a group of leading homebuilders who have really brought their ‘A’ game to the development,” he says, adding that variety is a key element to Crystal Lake. “Important to those who are buying properties is the fact that this community is not in the city, but is so close they can easily commute to a job, drive in for a night out, or for a day of shopping. Although many folks who move find themselves almost avoiding the city if they can,” he adds. According to Micheal, at one time, most buyers would select a lot and then find a builder. Today, the reverse is true, with builders purchasing lots and then working with new homebuyers on a range of designs. Prominent builders in Oakbank include G&E Homes, Hendren Homes, and Schulz Construction. G&E Homes is present in Oakbank with both single-family new builds and Sienna Ridge, a 55 plus bare land condo development that is just entering its second phase. According to company spokesperson Wes Peters, Sienna Ridge offers single or duplex residences from 1050 to 1535 square feet. “There is a range of designs (five) to choose from and units start at $254,900,” he says. “This is worry-free living at its finest, and it’s very affordable with all amenities included in the price.” G&E Homes has been building bungalow style condos for over 10 years. According to Peters, this gives the team a solid perspective in what the public seeks in both amenities and materials packages.
A spacious, well-appointed kitchen is one of the many highlights people can expect at Sienna Ridge, a condo development by G&E Homes.

Hendren Homes is another major player in Oakbank’s growing slate of new property construction. This company has built its reputation by limiting its output to just five or six new homes each year. “This way we can really pay attention to each customer and make certain that every home we build meets our high standards,” says Tana Hendren. Tana mentions that she grew up with home construction in her veins. Her father, Lyle Foster, headed up Foster Built Homes, a company that was at the forefront of Oakbank’s mini-housing boom. A few years ago, Tana and husband Ryan Hendren, who was Lyle’s construction manager for 10 years, started their own company to continue Foster Built’s tradition. in new home development. We asked Oakbank-based realtor Nicole McMillan about Schulz built homes. “After several years of selling Schulz homes, our family decided to join the list of happy clients and work with them to create something unique for our family in Aspen Lake. What I quickly confirmed was that they truly deliver a custom experience. The process was seamless and easy, and we ended up with a dream home that not only met our growing needs, it exceeded our expectations in every way,” she says. Nicole, who works with The Property Exchange Group, explains that they appreciated the fact
that both Peter and David Schulz were on site each day to supervise the entire process. “They have a team of 15 skilled employees, which allows greater quality control as they know each individual working on the job,” says Nicole, inviting people to visit their next showhome at 12 Tadman in Crystal Lake for an indication of Schulz-built quality. This showhome is a 1574 square foot three-bedroom, two-bath bungalow with a fully finished walkout basement featuring a covered deck with patio below. Peter Schulz mentions that they also turn to a select list of trades. “The taper that is working on a million dollar mansion is the same man
who comes to work on your new bungalow. This is true of our plumbers, electricians and other contractors. We source the best for the job that matters most - our client’s new home.” Peter remarks that Schulz has made a name for themselves with homes in the 1500 square foot range. “When the new home market took a downturn a few years ago, we were sheltered because we were building homes for clients whose needs were more modest. We saw this as a good niche for us, and today we have stayed within this 1400 to 1500 square foot footprint. Our designs and layouts continually change to keep fresh but our footprints remain consistent, just as does our quality.”

One of many gorgeous backyard retreats in Oakbank designed & installed by Evergreen Landscaping. With all the new home building comes a great need for new yards and outdoor living spaces. Evergreen Custom Landscaping has become a leading player in the design and installation of quality landscaping in Oakbank and surrounding areas, offering everything from new yard construction to existing yard landscaping renovations. They have had success with over 10 years working in the community. According to company principal Kris Chroniak, they are an A+ BBB accredited business, Bryan Baeumler (HGTV contractor personality) approved company, and their work has earned
them The Top Choice Award for the last four years. “The need for landscaping work in Oakbank can vary tremendously, as there is a broad market range. We have to be prepared for anything and everything, from a small sodding job to a backyard reno to full new yard design and installation. We do it all and we do it so we can grow our business with referrals and word of mouth. Our quality and customer service has allowed us to continue to be successful in this very tightknit community,” notes Chroniak.

A winding stone staircase adds a dramatic focal point to this property in another installation by Evergreen Landscaping. “We are not only lucky to have many customers and return customers over the years, we are also happy to call many of them our good friends,” he says, remarking that they do about 60 to 70 percent of their trade in Oakbank and surrounding areas. “We know the conditions and can really help plan a successful landscape project that adds tremendous value to property as well as lifestyle.” According to Chroniak, Evergreen Custom Landscaping has been involved in Oakbank since 2007. “I’ve watched as the area has grown and improved with more services. But, really it’s the country style living and closeness to places like Bird’s Hill Provincial Park that we find attractive. Oakbank is a location that really has it all. In fact, I could easily see myself living here. There are so many reasons to locate here,” he states. Certainly one key reason that attracts both residents and visitors is the quality of the local services. Consider Pineridge Hollow as a good case in point. Pineridge Hollow is a restaurant, events centre and retail site that is located just adjacent to Bird Hill Park on Heatherdale Road. Opened in 1992, the facility has undergone a number of changes over the years, including a massive 1.5 mile building move to its current site. “We started 25 years ago as a store,” says Katrina Klassen, Creative Director, Pineridge Hollow. “Then we began selling food, then we moved locations and got into wedding events. Our story has been one of slow consistent developments where we build on our successes.”

than ‘farmhouse chic’. “We have bedroom, dining room, tables, rugs and a host of décor items that span a lot of styles,” she states, inviting people to drop out Saturdays from 9:00 to 1:00 for the farmers market, and stay for the food and great times. Oakbank is a place where you can have it all,” concludes Connie Kosky-Levesque. “New home options and existing housing selections are amazing. We see our mission as one that brings staff, guests and community together to create something bigger,” she says.

“The long butcher-block pattern in a washed, grey-brown finish is right on trend for the customer that loves to bring outdoor elements inside and appreciates lots of texture and character,” adds Lee-Ann.
Both Winnipeg Ashley HomeStore locations have recently undergone extensive renovations. Now it’s easier than ever for customers to pull together the perfect collection, thanks to the new look and design.
“The nicks, notches, and nail holes make each piece unique. You can almost imagine the old barn or workbench that’s been repurposed into beautiful furniture pieces,” says LeeAnn Pruden, Manager of Product Planning & Allocation for Ashley HomeStore.
The Sommerford Series panel bed is also a HomeStore exclusive. The streamlined look is accented by a metal open-cap rail design on the headboard and footboard. Industrial silver / bronze colour finished hardware graces the simple nightstand and dresser within the collection.
“Our goal is to create the perfect environment, so that from the moment you walk in our doors, you feel inspired,” Lee-Ann says.
ooking for a lot of character, but with little fuss? The new Sommerford Series is a combination of natural pine with dark metal accents that gives off an industrial, urban feel while embracing those “imperfections” that make a distinctive statement.
The reclaimed pine pedestal dining table features a whole lot of raw beauty with a wide tabletop and ample legroom for up to eight people. Add in a large all-wood bench or fabric chairs, exclusive to Ashley HomeStores, to dine in style while scaling back on the fuss.
The Sommerford Series is the latest addition to the Urbanology lifestyle at Ashley HomeStores. Urbanology is an edgy, eclectic combination of unexpected finishes and textures. The collection gives customers the freedom to curate their own personal style by mixing and matching different pieces, and adding layers of pillows, throws, lamps, rugs, wall art and accessories.
Floor plans are organized by style and collections to make the shopping experience fun and easy. In addition to Urbanology, lifestyle collections include Contemporary Living, Vintage Casual, Heritage Road, New Traditions, Grand Elegance, and Family Spaces.

here’s no denying the beauty of hardwood floors. All the notches, grains, and patterns give each plank a distinct look, bringing character and luxury to any space it’s laid down. And now, homeowners can put hardwood almost anywhere – even kitchens – thanks to a wide selection of engineered varieties. The biggest issue with solid hardwood is that it shrinks and expands depending on the humidity and isn’t well suited for all areas of the home. Engineered hardwood, on the other hand, features construction which is considered very strong and stable, and lends itself to easier applications on a variety of surfaces. For example, engineered hardwoods can go over concrete, and can even be placed in areas of the home such as a kitchen or basement (although it still is not as water resistant as its look-a-like luxury vinyl plank counterparts).
The Hard Life
The biggest draw however, is engineered hardwood’s look (which LVP can’t fully replicate). Wire-brushed or hand-scraped planks offer contrasting details and colours which have good hiding factors and offer a low sheen. They are also easier to touch up should the floor scratch. Shaw Hardwoods, seen here in hand-scraped hickory, features subtle shifts in grey and white wash over each plank, settling deep in the wood grain, creating a contrasting softness that accentuates the natural wood grain and character. No two planks are alike, making the floor a oneof-a-kind work of art. Curtis Carpets offers a wide range of engineered hardwoods in both light and dark stains and a variety of species, including white oak, ash, and hickory.
As the summer sun heats up, cottage flooring is being considered. One of the best options for cottages and sunrooms is vinyl plank, especially varieties with a plastic core that’s 100 percent waterproof. Curtis Carpets features a wide selection of traditional and contemporary designs of vinyl flooring from Armstrong, Tarkett, Mannington and
Congoleum, as well as numerous in-stock items at huge savings. This summer the store is featuring a few different promotions, including the Your Home Style stain-proof carpet event.

The Modern Farmhouse Sink – An Updated Classic
Homeowners seeking a little wow factor for their kitchens will be delighted to know that the revolutionary BLANCO IKON® farmhouse sink collection has undergone a colour and model expansion.
Unlike traditional farmhouse sinks, the IKON® is the first made from a natural granite composite called SILGRANIT®, which makes it highly resistant to scratches, heat and direct impact. If your children love helping out in the kitchen, this design will stand up to any spills or scratches.
The traditional benefits of the apron front sink are: • Wider and deeper than standard sinks, so you can wash large pots comfortably • Mount slightly under the counter to make wiping water and food quick and easy • Basin edge sits in front of the countertop, meaning less leaning over the sink for longer tasks

ooking for kitchen or bathroom greatness? SPR is a company that has built its reputation by taking projects to higher levels. According to company principal Sorin Pop, the Winnipeg-based firm has become a ‘go to’ partner in home renovations, thanks to their considerable experience. “This is all we do. Our clients often come to us with basic ideas. We take their big picture view and add in all the little details that create lasting satisfaction,” says Sorin, remarking that they offer a full design / build approach that includes customizing pieces into unique one of a kind vanities, kitchen islands, and furniture for a unique touch to designs. “Our team understands materials, colour palettes, and costing. By having a designer and contractor as one company we can look at what clients want and make it happen. And, we have been doing this since day one,” he says, suggesting their relationships with leading suppliers such as Kitchen and Bath Classics and Baril help them stand out from the competition. SPR uses a five-stage process where clients maintain full control of kitchen and bathroom projects at each step. “First we meet with our potential clients to discuss projects, and then we meet again to sharpen the picture, offer drawings and renderings and discuss the types of materials. Most importantly, we listen
and communicate. Just because I understand the ins and outs of a project, doesn’t mean the customer does. We spend the time to get everyone clear on how we plan to do the job and why we are doing it this way. This creates a much calmer approach where our clients can relax and we can work on wowing them with service.”
just icing on the cake,” he says, inviting people to visit sprdesign.ca for more information on how they can take their kitchens and bathrooms from just OK to amazing!
Sorin reports that trends are ever changing. “We stay ahead of designs and can fully advise with plans that are contemporary and clean. People are spending upwards of $30,000 on a bathroom renovation and more on a kitchen. We are able to discuss the latest in bathroom and kitchen fixtures, as well as flooring and other aspects that can make a big change in what was a traditional bathroom in an older home. The same is true with kitchens, where we know lighting and great designs that help create greater efficiency throughout.” Kitchen and bathroom renovations are among the most solid investments a homeowner can make. Typically work done on these areas will increase the value in home equity. “For many of our clients, they are not retrofitting their homes to sell, but to stay and live in a more pleasing residential environment. The fact that the work makes their home more valuable is SUMMER 2017 | STYLE MANITOBA | 69
KITCHEN&BATH Bold & Blue
After many years of “greige” colouring within the tile industry, homeowners are now seeing some lively alternatives. Blue is the colour that has penetrated the palette, and if you look around, it is being featured in everything from clothing to cars to tile. Shades, the tiles featured in the image, is one of Ames Tile & Stone Ltd.’s new lines that not only has a fantastic neutral palette available, but also pops of colour to really impact any space. “You should feel happy and inspired when you enter your home,” says Barb Hilderman, Architectural & Design Sales Consultant for Ames Tile & Stone Ltd., adding the inspiration is even heading outside with two-centimetre thick porcelain tiles being laid down to look like interior flooring. “Have a little fun with your design.” It’s not just varied hues that are finding their way into to trendy tiles, but also mock versions of other natural elements. Porcelain plank flooring that imitates wood, stone, marble or concrete are interesting alternatives to flooring in all areas of the home. Porcelain planks are also hard wearing and can be resistant to extreme weather conditions, fading, scratches, and heavy loads. Ames Tile & Stone Ltd. continues to be an industry leader in selecting products that are on trend and being a creative design source for homeowners. Visit their Winnipeg showroom and be inspired to design to the next level.

KITCHEN&BATH Something Different
In today’s open concept homes, kitchens must flow seamlessly with the rest of the main floor space, yet still aim to have a few unique features that define the room. Kitchen Craft achieved this with a detailed island set in the center of this Parkhill Homes kitchen. The overall design concept of the home was clean lines and symmetry, so Kitchen Craft utilized Summit flat panel maple doors in two tones – one for the main kitchen and one for the island – both complement the finishing work in the rest of the home. While the cabinet lines stayed clean, Kitchen Craft wanted to do something a little different with the eight-foot-long island. They created a raised island top with heavy six-inch posts to support the angled granite tops. At one end, a post serves a function supporting the raised stone top, while at the other end, four posts were grouped together for an interesting geometric design feature. The hood fan is another focal point in the kitchen, balanced by lift-up cabinetry around it to give a clean sightline. Three-inch thick columns were added around the fridge to give a built in and seamless look. Kitchen Craft’s designs and product lines are versatile with the ability to blend with Parkhill Homes’ design concept, as well as add those extra features that will make a kitchen special.
Au Natural
An appreciation for the environment and the natural materials that come from it is at the forefront of design trends. The pure simple beauty of materials such as wood, wicker, shells, stone, and cork, can be utilized in so many ways within lighting fixtures. With these natural materials there is an earthiness to the popular designs, which seem to elude a sense of warmth and comfort. Levo, pictured here, is a bedside wall sconce/reading light hybrid made by Cerno, an industrial design firm specializing in eco-friendly, modern LED lighting fixtures. The goal for the Levo was to create a bedside wall fixture with great task lighting articulation that was intuitive enough to be used without prior knowledge of the fixture – all the while making it slender, sexy, and very robust. The result – a bedside wall sconce/reading light hybrid with a USB charger. “With environmental concerns front and center, clients are happy to see such good use of renewal resources and less environmental damage with manufacturing processes,” says Alison Demare, BID, branch manager of Robinson Lighting Ltd. “We have a wide array of lighting available with this ‘au natural’ style - from contemporary to cottage chic, we have it all,” she explains, adding Robinson’s lighting experts can help you select the right finishes and styles for your home.

KITCHEN&BATH Lay it Down
Hardwoods used to be where it’s at for living rooms, and laminate was what you put in your kitchen. But now, luxury vinyl plank is covering spaces usually reserved for other flooring material, thanks to its water and dirt resistance, as well as its resilience and long-lasting durability. With the look of hardwood, tile, stone or even woven fabric, Kraus luxury vinyl plank offers styles homeowners want with the durability and water resistance other materials can’t provide. Great for kitchens, bathrooms, cottages, or the entire house, it is also easy to maintain, is perfect for a home with pets and kids, and is suitable for high traffic areas of the home. Caring for luxury vinyl floor is also simple. Just sweep and mop occasionally; no need to polish and scrub scuffs or stains off the surface. Finally, luxury vinyl plank floors are costfriendly when compared to real wood or real tile floors, coming in at $1.39 a square foot to $3.99 a square foot, depending on the installation method. Kens Carpets & Urban Homestyle Centre offers a variety of luxury vinyl plank brands in both glue- down and click-floating formats for multiple installation options. Their large modern showroom at 730 Archibald features extensive lines of flooring, area rugs, custom fabrics, and window coverings to complete the look of your living space.
All the Possibilities
When you open yourself up to new ideas in home design, the possibilities are endless. But you also need to be able to pair those possibilities with a company that can make it a reality. Springfield Woodworking prides itself on being able to work with contractors and designers to develop unique looks and designs, investing in high-tech equipment to be able to give customers the best finish possible. The kitchen pictured here was a renovation to a 15-year-old home where the owners were open to a complete redesign of the space. The kitchen features solid, raised-panel maple in antique white with a glazed finish on the upper and lower cabinets, while the island was finished in Appaloosa stain, glazed and distressed. “We are doing a lot more kitchens with two tone colour designs. Often the upper cabinets are lighter coloured and the lower cabinets are darker,” states Paul Kleinsasser, general manager, adding that making the island stand out as almost a separate piece of furniture is also a popular trend. Just above the island is another focal point - a unique, hand-painted tin design, created by Hammerdown Home Renovations and finished with Springfield’s wood beams. Springfield offers a total design package, full displays in their showroom, a high-quality production facility, and complete install service so customers can think of all the possibilities. 72 | STYLE MANITOBA | SUMMER 2017
