the agenda Welcome to Style’s winter edition, which should be in your hands just in time for the biggest shopping season of the year. Packed with a plethora of good stuff, this issue conveniently includes a Holiday Gift Guide just brimming with wonderful ideas - some for giving, others for living – all available from local stores and boutiques. Gracing our cover this time around are the beautiful and talented Juno Award-winning Wailin’ Jennys. Whether actors, athletes, dancers or musicians, it’s always a pleasure to share the success of fellow Manitobans with our readers, and in Women of Song, Bruce Symaka gives us a glimpse into the musical journey of the Jennys. Our province is home to so many gifted people! Christine Hanlon’s fabulous home coverage in Dreams of All Dimensions is also a good read –
this smaller square footage home design truly demonstrates that superior aesthetics and functionality are possible in any size. As for revamped spaces, Complete Aesthetic Care offers readers a look at the newly expanded and renovated First Glance centre – a gorgeous location where plastic surgery and aesthetic care services meet in a sumptuous setting. And those thinking of a residential renovation should check out Exciting Evolution, a piece on one couple’s beautiful whole home reno. Style’s Kitchen & Bath Showcase section is also a must-read - here you’ll find great products and ideas for your own space. If you’re dreaming of renovations- whether indoors or out - we’ve also included information on a must-attend event – the Kitchen Bath & Renovations Show. Celebrating its 10th anniversary, the show is coming up in mid-
January and is the place to go for expert advice, fabulous products and innovative ideas. Those in attendance are in for a treat - the extremely popular Sarah Richardson (of HGTV’s Sarah’s House) will be the special celebrity guest. Those who’ve watched the show know Richardson has expertise aplenty! On a sombre note, this season saw Winnipeg lose a fine gentleman – Bruce Robinson of Robinson Lighting. Well known and liked by numerous people, Bruce was a long time supporter and client of Style Manitoba. He will be missed by many, particularly his children – Leigh and Brett. Our condolences to the Robinson family – may peace be with you this holiday season.

Who would have thought that orange would ever make a comeback in home décor? I was pleasantly surprised to see how such a cool layout came to life with the pops of colour the orange chairs and accents provided to the overall look of the home featured on the cover of Style’s fall issue. Bravo to the designer for making such a bold colour choice!

Carol Conway, Winnipeg My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed the story on RAY (Resource Assistance for Youth) in the latest issue of Style Manitoba. It’s great to read about the valuable assistance a centre such as this will be providing for society’s less fortunate youth. Having a safe haven from a tough life on the streets is essential for all people, but especially for the young. It’s nice to know that Style Manitoba’s editorial scope goes beyond fancy home designs to inform readers about important services and centres such as RAY. Nellie & Jason Youngman, Winnipeg I am a self-confessed magazine junkie, and love getting each issue of Style Manitoba. I particularly liked the landscaping section this time around, and noticed there were some new companies featured in the last couple issues, all of which presented beautiful designs. My husband and I will be tackling plans for our outdoor space next year, and thanks to the coverage in Style, it’ll be easier to find a good landscape designer locally. Marianne Wentworth, Winnipeg

The latest issue of Style Manitoba was a great guide for us this past season. My wife and I have been looking for a new home and the fall issue was packed with great options. We visited almost every showhome featured and were very impressed with the wide variety of home designs, as well as the neighbourhoods they were situated in. We’ve narrowed it down to Bridgwater Forest, but are still deciding on a builder. Thanks for the helpful coverage! Gerry Gillis, Winnipeg

Featuring a timeless design, this 1,293-square-foot display bungalow demonstrates that superior aesthetics and functionality are possible in any size. “By building this showhome, we wanted to show how well space can be utilized,” says Joshua Rist, General Manager of Discovery Homes. “Everything can look great and function very well, and you don’t need tons of space to do it.”
The builder worked hand-in-hand with Dominion Drywall to create the elegant entertainment unit in the great room.

Savings realized from a smaller square footage can be invested into amenities and finishes the homeowners truly want. For instance, this home features a maple hardwood from Curtis Carpets throughout most of the main floor. There are quartz countertops in the ensuite and kitchen. In the latter, a cooktop, built-in wall oven and microwave not only look great, but also offer superior functionality. In fact, the kitchen was carefully designed to maximize the use of space. “It’s a very good working triangle that makes it easy to move quickly from one area to the next,” notes Rist. He adds that the kitchen incorporates plenty of storage, balanced by open shelving for display. At the same time, the white cabinets from Norcraft contribute to the timeless look of the décor. The clean lines of the door style combine with a crown moulding for an enduring transitional appeal. “It’s very functional, but it’s beautiful too,” says Rist. This certainly applies to the easy-clean subway tile backsplash with glass detail, punctuated by a stunning wall of glass mosaic tile behind the chimney hood fan. To create a sense of unity, the designer reintroduced this same glass mosaic in the ensuite, around the mirror and as an accent to the large ceramic tiles that line the shower. Discovery Homes has an in-house designer to help homeowners develop and fine-tune every aspect of their home design, from layout to the smallest detail. Here, she selected rectangular tiles for the shower, to contrast with the 13”x 13” version of the same tile on the floor. The shower is very spacious as is the adjoining 12½’ x 13’ bedroom with its double closets. The plan can even be expanded to include a walk-in closet or more bedroom space if desired. “If somebody says that they have a lot of furniture or they want enough room in order to place it in a certain configuration, we can easily bump out a wall on the floor plan,” says Rist. “In fact, we do things like that all the time.” “The plan is really a launching pad,” he adds. “Every family is unique and every Discovery Home is uniquely built for that family.”
Timeless white cabinetry from Norcraft creates a bright ambiance. Subtly flecked Caesarstone quartz from Stone-N-Counters coordinates with the cabinetry and backsplash.

The builder works hard to identify each client’s every need and desire, all the while presenting different ideas and options the homeowners might not have considered. Unique and distinctive features can contribute to personalizing a home while keeping the look timelessly appealing. In the great room for instance, a combination of small square and rectangular windows coordinate with the design of the entertainment unit with its long lean lines and square tiles surrounding the gas fireplace. The dark cabinetry ties in with the kitchen island while the bright white casings reflect the colour of the kitchen cabinets. Layers of lighting from Total Lighting ensure the space is always bright at any time of day. Although the great room, dining room and kitchen are all in conveniently close proximity, the dining room is enclosed by two walls to lend it a measure of formal separation. “You can create a mess in the kitchen without your guests seeing it from the dining room,” says Rist.
Two distinctive light fixtures from Total Lighting illuminate the dining room table. Curtis Carpets provided all the flooring, including the large rectangular tiles of the foyer and the bamboo-look vinyl in the main bathroom. Shingles from Sarna Roofing contrast nicely with the coloured stucco and the cultured stone that graces the front elevation and portico.

Visions Draperies dressed the bedroom windows with a combination of blinds and drapery panels. A drywall ceiling detail, recessed area with a built-in shelf and elegant window coverings from Visions Draperies further add to the formality of the dining room. “There are so many options,” notes Rist. “We can create a built-in buffet or leave a space for people who have their own buffet, or install a simple shelf, like we did here. We try to give people as many options as we can to build a house that suits their needs.” For example, there are three different eating areas in this compact home. Aside from the dining room, there is an informal dining space located in the kitchen near the doors to a future deck. Nearby, the kitchen island doubles as a convenient breakfast bar. Homeowners have different needs depending on the circumstance. In the finished basement of this display home, Discovery Homes took the opportunity to demonstrate how those various needs can be met. A spacious entertainment area with built-in bar is adjacent to a recreation area with pool table. A nearby fitness area is closed off and self-contained. Downstairs, there is also a third bedroom and a full bathroom, ideal for a guest or teenager. A carefully thought-out floor plan can take into consideration both immediate and evolving needs, often combining the two in a design that adapts perfectly to changing circumstances. It is that kind of vision that the team at Discovery Homes brings to the process of every home they build. It is a process that will ensure that any Discovery home, no matter what size, will continue to meet the homeowners’ needs while looking great for years to come.
With their sleek towel bar and textured glass, the shower doors by Shodor coordinate perfectly with the ensuite design. winter 2010 | STYLE MANITOBA | 15

As the third generation in the business, General Manager Joshua Rist started working in construction in the summers between school. Today, he leads a team united in a philosophy of meeting every family’s unique needs while educating people in the building process. It’s a duty Rist takes very seriously. Whether it is about the plan layout, a design feature, a particular amenity, technology or material, he wants to ensure people make informed choices by answering all their questions and presenting them with all their options. Discovery Homes is fortunate to benefit from a repository of expertise both in its team, its craftspeople and its suppliers, as well as those of Gateway Construction. Going Fast What happens when demand outstrips supply? When you are a developer, you might open up a fresh phase for new home construction. Indeed, this is just what is happening at Bridgwater Forest in southwest Winnipeg. Already proclaimed as the city’s fastest growing area, the Bridgwater Forest neighbourhood is itself the leader in new home starts in both the city and the quadrant with 206 building permits issued in the first nine months of 2010. What’s behind the attraction? “ Popularity is due to things like the amount of natural green space, the established network of sidewalks and pedestrian access points, the look of the homes, and the pent-up demand for housing in the southwest sector of Winnipeg,” says Dwayne Rewniak, Director of Land Development with Manitoba Housing, the group behind Bridgwater Forest. To meet the demand for new homes, Bridgwater will open another 95 singlefamily lots in Phase IV of the six-phase neighbourhood. According to Rewniak, the lots will be made available to the 17 participating builders this fall, with buyers able to see construction start in early 2011. “We will also be proceeding with our second neighbourhood, Bridgwater Lakes, and with Bridgwater Centre. We will see lots available next year for the Lakes development and will start moving on the servicing of the town centre in 2011,” he says, remarking that they are waiting until the total community reaches a critical mass of residents before getting underway full speed on residential and commercial developments in the town centre. “Part of our larger vision for the Bridgwater neighbourhood is to create a mixed community that offers a town centre at the heart of the multi-phase development. In this 188-acre centre, there will be retail, residential and commercial opportunities with up to 1000 multi-family housing units in a mixed use scenario,” he notes. According to Rewniak, Phase I is nearly sold out, Phase II is 85 percent sold, and Phase III is 90 percent taken. “This demand is also carrying over into the multi-family sector. Here, Rewniak describes a Streetside Development project on Bridgeland Drive South that will see 85 units completed by spring 2011.
“Expectations are for another project of similar scope along Bridgeland Drive North to begin sometime next year. We also have Phases V and VI available for development, and homebuyers should be able to access these by 2012.” This development is all part of Manitoba Housing’s integrated plans and social commitment that includes taking proceeds from Bridgwater Forest and Royalwood lot sales to assist in revitalizing Winnipeg’s aging core area. To date, these proceeds have contributed $4.3 million in funding to inner city projects such as the University of Winnipeg’s McFeetors Hall, a new student residence at the downtown campus, and the Avenue Building on Portage where developers are creating residential condos. And while Bridgwater Forest is helping the inner city by diverting profits, it is also helping to keep the south green. For example, Phase I offered 54 geothermal lots for a more ecofriendly approach to home heating and cooling, and 37 of these lots have sold to date. There is also a considerable amount of green preserve that lends itself well to creating a very attractive setting.
“A quarter of the 375 acres in Bridgwater Forest are dedicated to natural open space like forests and lakes. In fact, the forest alone encompasses 25 acres with walkways that deliver a deepin-nature feel. So encompassing is the treed area that one might think they were at Birds Hill Park rather than in the midst of a major urban setting,” notes Rewniak, adding that they built in much of the basic infrastructure like the several kilometres of sidewalks that course the roadways, and the extensive network of pathways. They also participated in the development of the lakes in Bridgwater. “This gives the neighbourhood a more mature aspect than most new home communities,” he says, concluding that the combination of physical attributes and the assembly of premier homebuilders have made Bridgwater Forest the fastest growing new development among Winnipeg’s new home communities.

With the end of the calendar year quickly approaching, now is the ideal time to properly plan to minimize current and future income tax liabilities.
Effective Year-End Tax Planning
Reducing Income In general, taxable income may be reduced by deferring income or by splitting income with family members. For instance, income could be potentially deferred by choosing to receive a bonus payment after the end of the calendar year. If you are in a high tax bracket, significant tax savings may be realized if a portion of your income is transferred to your spouse and/or children in a lower tax bracket. In general, this may be achieved by paying a reasonable salary to your spouse and/or children for services provided to your self-employed business or private company and/or by electing to split eligible pension income with your spouse on your tax return. Another potential opportunity to split income with your spouse is by way of an investment loan. The loan must bear interest at a rate greater than or equal to the prescribed rate determined by the Canada Revenue Agency at the time the debt was incurred. Interest on the loan must be paid within 30 days of the end of each calendar year; otherwise any income (including capital gains) earned on the proceeds of the loan will be attributed to the high tax bracket spouse and included in their income for tax purposes. Before implementing any income splitting strategy, consider the potential impact on payroll related taxes and how an increase in the income of an individual in a lower tax-bracket will affect any tax credits, benefits, or federal/provincial programs that are calculated based on their income. A Tax-Free Savings Account (TFSA) may also reduce taxable income. Up to $5,000 may be contributed annually and any unused contribution room will be carried forward indefinitely. Although TFSA contributions are not taxdeductible, income earned in a TFSA is tax exempt. Withdrawals are tax-free and may increase contribution room in future years. Tax Deductions and Tax Credits While there are many tax deductions available, the following are some commonly overlooked deductions: As previously noted, interest paid on loans used to earn investment income is generally deductible for tax purposes. Thus, effectively structuring your debt obligations may provide tax relief. Consider an individual who has a non-registered investment portfolio as well as non-deductible debt. Assume that the investment portfolio could be liquidated at a nominal tax cost and the proceeds from the liquidation used to pay down any non-deductible debt. If the individual could then borrow an equivalent amount to invest in a new qualified investment portfolio, the previously non-deductible interest would be exchanged for deductible interest.
The recent performance of the stock markets may have created loss positions in many investment portfolios. However, unrealized losses may provide tax relief in the current taxation year and possibly provide for a recovery of taxes previously paid if the securities in a loss position are sold prior to the end of the calendar year. In general, capital losses can only be used to offset capital gains. To the extent that capital losses exceed capital gains in the current year, the resulting net capital loss may be carried back to any of the three preceding taxation years to recover taxes paid on the taxable capital gains realized in those years, or carried forward indefinitely to reduce capital gains realized in future years. The optimal amount of capital losses to be carried back to prior years should take into consideration the preservation of any non-refundable tax credits claimed in the preceding taxation years and a comparison of the effective tax rates at which the capital losses would be applied in the preceding tax years versus carrying the capital losses forward to future tax years. In addition, tax planning opportunities may exist permitting the transfer of capital losses between spouses, in the event that one spouse has unrealized capital losses while the other spouse has capital gains in the current year or any of the preceding three tax years.
You should also perform a careful review of your investment portfolio at the end of the year to determine if your portfolio has shares in companies that are bankrupt or insolvent, as it may be possible to file an election in your tax return to claim a capital loss on those shares in the current taxation year, provided certain conditions are met. Prior to implementing any tax planning involving capital losses, recognize that rules in the Income Tax Act may deny a capital loss in certain circumstances, most notably in transactions involving an “affiliated person” (which includes a spouse or controlled corporation) and when identical securities are acquired or disposed of within a certain time frame. It is recommended that you seek the advice of a tax professional prior to implementing any strategy to ensure it applies to your particular situation. Please note that comments included in this editorial are not intended to be a definitive analysis of tax law. The comments contained herein are general in nature and professional advice regarding an individual’s particular tax position should be obtained in respect of any person’s specific circumstances. winter 2010 | STYLE MANITOBA | 21

Spaces to live in.
Following your heart may be desirable when choosing a life partner, making a career decision, or picking a holiday destination, but in the world of investing, letting your emotions rule can prove dangerous. At market highs, for example, many investors are moved by euphoria and recklessly buy hot stocks, sectors, or funds. However, past performance does not guarantee future results. Not only do investors sometimes buy a security at its most expensive, many purchase it just before a drop, then sell in a panic and take a loss.
Establish your priorities
During market lows, many investors experience feelings of fear. Letting it get the best of you could force you to stop investing. However, you could be missing out on opportunities to purchase high-quality investments at a lower price, which would position your portfolio for gains when markets inevitably rise. What would the voice of reason say? Continue investing in a diversified portfolio with an asset allocation that reflects your risk tolerance and time horizon.

Stay on track
To maintain your asset allocation, rebalancing is key. Say your asset mix is targeted at 60% equities and 40% fixed income. One year, a stock market gain boosts your equity holdings to well over 60%. The emotional response might be to pour more money into the rising hot stocks, pushing the asset mix even further off target. Instead, if you rebalance by selling a portion of the overweight classes and reinvesting in the underweight classes, not only do you keep your allocation on track, you systematically sell high and buy low. “It’s normal to be euphoric at market highs and feel disappointment when markets slump, but at Assante, we’re here for you to talk to,” says Curtis Cross, Senior Financial Advisor with Assante Wealth Management. “Our advisors can provide an informed perspective on the markets and help you keep your investments on track with your long-term goals through all the ups and downs.”

The hunt for ample country-sized estate lots will get a little easier this spring when The Fahr Group opens up Prairie Ridge in East St. Paul. Located just 20 minutes from Portage and Main, Prairie Ridge will offer two-acre lots starting around $100,000 in a two-phase development off Rebeck Road just north of the town of Birds Hill.
Living Large in Prairie Ridge
According to developer Johnathan Fahr, VP of Operations for the Fahr Group, the site will offer 18 lots with additional lots coming. Work to basic infrastructure will get underway this spring with paved roads. Hydro and cabling are expected to be largely complete before the first home rises. “This development will offer properties at a cost lower per square foot than other communities in the area, making Prairie Ridge more affordable for those looking to build dream homes,” says Fahr, adding that lots are not attached to individual builders. “This means those that pick a lot in the development can go to any builder. We believe this will provide a greater custom feel to the entire community as opposed to some developments where homebuilders own the lots and sell only their designs. At Prairie Ridge, while we will have architectural guidelines, property owners are really limited only by their imaginations.” The development is sited on a tract that butts directly against the Floodway, a big plus given that those who buy in will know the extent of development for years to come.
“We have a lot of experience in East St. Paul. The Fahr family began farming in the area three generations ago and still live there,” he says. Fahr also hinted that that they will be introducing another larger parcel of land off Hoddinott Road in the near future. “Prairie Ridge is all about great value, individuality, and fabulous location with an East St. Paul postal code. These lots are large enough
to encompass all the toys and lifestyle you want to bring at a price that allows buyers to put more money into homes rather than the lot. For those who want the ‘living large’ lifestyle – this is it,” says Fahr. More information can be found on the company website: www.fahrgroup.ca

Nott Adds to its Service Edge There is more that’s new at Winnipeg’s Nott Autocorp than just fine cars. The north Lagimodiere car centre is also home to some fresh faces in the sales department. This past spring, Trevor Nott welcomed Nick Nacionales to the Nott family and now has brought customer service specialist Jaimie McDougall on board to help complete its growing sales team. Buying Smart According to Trevor Nott, Nacionales and McDougall will be on the front line of a service offering advice on car sales that can save customers thousands of dollars over the traditional car buying experience. At Nott Autocorp, clients are educated about vehicles that may be a better investment in terms of their current value and their resale value later. Nott generally purchases vehicles directly off lease from the manufacturer at a true wholesale price. Further, the vehicle is fully inspected at auction before any money changes hands and then it is re-inspected (160 points) once it arrives at the Dealership, making it Nott Family Certified. Once Nott is satisfied with the automobile or truck, they work with the client to establish the length of time they typically own their vehicles. Typically this is 12 to 24 months. After this time frame, Nott Autocorp will advertise and sell their vehicle at a retail price. “While we are listing your vehicle for sale, we are also actively sourcing a replacement ‘SMART’ vehicle for you at a wholesale cost. Our clients get retail for their trade through a consignment sale, and because the car was bought smart initially, our clients are not getting stuck with paying for the depreciation. The result is a dramatically reduced price to drive a new and exciting car.”
Jaimie McDougall Jaimie McDougall knows and understands exceptional service better than most. This new Nott staffer comes from a prestigious Winnipeg steakhouse where he was the celebrated bartender. How does this relate to car sales? At his previous post, McDougall was all about service and details, a fact that earned him a considerable following among those seeking the very best in libations. In fact, his considerable attention to customers, as well as great cocktails, won him the attention of Enroute magazine where the editors highlighted a profile on his acclaimed service skills. These customer relationship skills will now benefit car buyers who come to Nott for its ‘Buying Smart’ approach. Favourite car: 2010 Ferrari California Hobbies: Snowboarding, Golf, workouts, and Hockey Best part of car sales: “Meeting new people and working to find them the right vehicle.”
Nick Nacionales Nick Nacionales is one of Winnipeg’s most recognizable names in car sales with a career that has seen him selling some of the most prestigious names in the automotive industry, from some of Winnipeg’s most established dealerships. Today as Nott’s Custom Order Sales Manager, he is the go-to guy for some of the most prestigious brands including Audi, Porsche, Infiniti and beyond. Over his years in the industry he has become well respected as the professional with a flair for personalized customer service. Favourite car: 2009 Porsche 911 Carrera Turbo Hobbies: Golf, Snowboarding and Travelling. Best part of car sales: “The thanks you get when you deliver the perfect car.”
Trevor invites Jaimie and Nick’s friends and customers to visit them at the north Lagimodiere facility or check out www.nottautocorp.com for more information on the Nott car buying experience.

THEATRE
Manitoba Theatre Centre – A merry way to celebrate the season, White Christmas is an unforgettable and entertaining musical that features the dazzling songs ‘Happy Holidays,’ ‘Blue Skies’ and ‘White Christmas’ (until Dec 18). Emma Rice’s clever adaptation of Noel Coward’s Brief Encounter remains true to the tender and suspenseful film while creating a breathtaking original production with awe-inspiring projections, music hall performances and puppets, switching seamlessly between theatre and the silver screen (Jan 6-29). In The Shunning, Manitoba playwright Patrick Friesen weaves a tangled web between faith and the faithful, introducing a new generation to his lyrical masterpiece (Feb 10-Mar 5). Calendar Girls is based on the Miramax motion picture ‘Calendar Girls’ and promises to be a rich and rewarding comedy (Mar 17-Apr 9). MTC Warehouse – The Seafarer, set in Dublin on Christmas Eve, is described as “a realistic fantasy, a wide-awake nightmare.” A peaceful holiday isn’t in the cards for James “Sharky” Harkin, whose brother’s drinking buddies pour into the house looking for a poker game. When a mysterious stranger sits down at the table, the stakes are raised damningly high and Sharky may be playing for his soul. As the booze flows and old debts come calling, Sharky discovers you should never wager what you can’t afford to lose (until Dec 18). Patrick Marber (MTC Warehouse’s Closer) transplants August Strindberg’s once-scandalous play Miss Julie to the English countryside on the night of the Labour Party’s landslide victory in 1945. In After Miss Julie, as revellers celebrate, Miss Julie engages in a forbidden flirtation with her father’s chauffeur, John. Seduced by her manipulations and driven by his own ambition, John lays bare long-held feelings for the reckless temptress. Their affair escalates into a volatile power struggle that leaves destruction in its wake (Jan 20-Feb 5). Lungs filled with water, hearts seized with dread; not long married, too soon dead. In The Drowning Girls, three ghostly brides surface from bathtubs filled with water to gather evidence against their womanizing, murderous husband. Based on an actual Scotland Yard case and told with graceful beauty and gallows humour, The Drowning Girls will take your breath away (Feb 24-Mar 12). Master Playwright Festival – Building on the success of previous festivals, the Manitoba Theatre Centre and members of Winnipeg’s arts community are tackling the work of Swedish playwright August Strindberg. Like August Strindberg himself, the 11th annual Master Playwright Festival offers an intriguing mix of experimentation, innovation and daring. The festival line-up features more than 10 full productions of Strindberg’s plays, including Miss Julie, Ghost Sonata, A Dream Play and Playing With Fire. StrindbergFest audiences will also have the opportunity to experience original creations based on the playwright’s body of work (Jan 20 – Feb 6). Plays take place at various locations. Winnipeg Jewish Theatre – Don’t miss the exciting world premiere of The Father, based on the play by August Strindberg. Julie Tepperman, one of Canada’s most promising young playwrights, brings a fresh eye, sharp wit, and a female perspective to her adaptation. The Father is Strindberg’s famous play about a man feuding with his wife over how to raise their daughter (Jan 27 – Feb 6).

Manitoba Theatre For Young People – Based on the children’s book by Laura Numeroff, If You Give a Mouse a Cookie is a celebration of friendship, storytelling, imagination, and physical comedy (Dec 7-26). Dennis Foon’s unflinching story Liars depicts two teenagers and the effects of alcohol abuse on their lives. Told through the use of compelling theatrical effect, two teens learn to trust one another, and find the courage to deal with their fractured lives and their parents’ problem (Jan 6-14). In Wired, a shy and awkward Damien is transformed into a cooler version of himself through his online persona. But when Damien is the target of a cyber-bullying campaign, he comes to see the downside of this wired-in world (Jan 20-27). Blending African and Quebecois music and traditions, Baobab imparts a gentle message about passing down wisdom from one generation to the next (Feb 6-13). In Russell’s World, Russell conjures up an imaginary world of outer space journeys and high seas voyages that ultimately help him face his fears (Feb 1724). The Man Who Planted Trees is an awardwinning story about a French shepherd who sets out with his dog to plant a forest and transform a barren wasteland. An inspiring and unforgettable story about the difference one man (and his dog!) can make (Mar 10-18).

Prairie Theatre Exchange – Another holiday season, another high-energy, madcap presentation of the stories of Robert Munsch as live theatre by Prairie Theatre Exchange. This year, we’re bringing back some classic Munsch -- including Thomas’ Snowsuit, I Have to Go, Andrew’s Loose Tooth, and everyone’s favourite feisty heroine, The Paper Bag Princess (Dec 18 – Jan 5). The December Man by Colleen Murphy is a powerful story of the Montreal massacre’s human aftermath (Jan 27Feb 13). The King may have left the building, but he’s front and centre in Burnin’ Love, a wild new play from local writer Sharon Bajer (Mar 3 – 20).
Royal Winnipeg Ballet – The Nutcracker returns this season to bring sparkle to your holidays! Festive, clever and bright, this Tchaikovsky classic is set in a stately home on Winnipeg’s Wellington Crescent and features uniquely Canadian scenes, like a snowy pond hockey game and a battle on Parliament Hill. Join the boisterous celebration as young Clara’s Christmas fantasy comes to life with dancing mice, toy soldiers and a mischievous dessertstealing bear. A holiday classic to share with the whole family! (Dec 22-29). Don’t miss the exciting world premiere of Wonderland. It is Alice like you’ve never seen her before! You’ll barely recognize Alice in this contemporary, mature rendering of Lewis Carroll’s psychedelic fantasy. This trip down the rabbit hole packs just as much surreal fun, but has generous doses of wit, camp, nostalgia and emotional depth. (Mar 9-13) Winnipeg Contemporary Dancers – An astonishing universe removed from reality, Cabane is a work that is part in situ performance
and part installation art that journeys to unusual places such as an indoor parking lot and a ballroom. The trio of dancer and choreographer Paul-André Fortier, visual artist /writer/performer/musician Rober Racine and filmmaker Robert Morin come together for Cabane (Feb 4-6). Pteros Tactics examines the ‘instant of desire’ as described by Anne Carson in her essay Eros the Bittersweet. Christopher House’s collaboration with TDT’s extraordinary dancers and Dora-winning composer Phil Strong is a vibrant and playful work that examines the space of desire between the lover and beloved (Mar 3 -6). All performances take place at The Rachel Browne Theatre. Young Lungs Dance Exchange – Don’t miss No Idling, the annual choreographic showcase of new works (Feb 11&12). Performances take place at the Gas Station Theatre.

The Baroque World of Fernando Botero features 100 paintings, sculptures and drawings (Dec 10-Feb 27). Senior Winnipeg artist Eva Stubbs is interested in the role history and memory play in shaping human identity. Working primarily as a sculptor over the past half-century, Stubbs has produced carvings, bronzes, and is best known for her use of fired clay. The exhibition, Eva Stubbs: The Rough Ideal, 1954-2008 is a testament to the artists’ work over the last 50 years (Dec 17-Mar 20). aceart – Explore the imaginative mind of performance artist and cultural engineer Michael Dudeck Witchdoctor with his latest project Amygdala. Plug In ICA – Relive the wild west through an artist’s eye with the exhibition Putting the WILD Back into the West: Buffalo Boy and Belle Sauvage. This exhibition will be the culmination of four years of performance installations by artist/curator Lori Blondeau and interdisciplinary artist Adrian Stimson. Through their wild-western alter egos, Buffalo Boy and Belle Sauvage, Blondeau and Stimson adapt stereotypical themes from a now distant era of vaudeville, saloons and gun fights, setting the stage for a contemporary rewriting of history. A diorama is presented for people to photograph themselves in colonial costuming, as well as a wall of photos of previous Belle and Buffalo Boy enactments (until Dec 19). Witness the remarkable work of distinguished Winnipeg artist Eleanor Bond through the exhibition Mountain of Shame. The paintings and sculptures exhibited offer reflections on the enigmas and complexities of existence through the (im)materiality of painting. Full of rich and lurid colours, these works evoke the fantastical, while still referencing familiar built and natural worlds (until Jan 2). Manitoba Museum – In the Glow: The Science Behind the Art of Neon is a trip back in time to the jukebox days. With In the Glow, the Museum’s Alloway Hall is transformed into a spectacular light display where neon characters, animals, and messages burst out of the darkness with astonishing colour and brightness. Far from being just another pretty face, this exhibit also explores some of the science behind the magic (until Jan 3).

Winter chilled? Sip a hot ‘n’ boozy Spiced Cider. This amber-hued warm-me-up features apple afloat in a steamy mug of cinnamon spiced rum and hot cider. A second drink’s left to fate with “Bartender’s Choice.” Tell ‘em what you love and the bartender concocts something special. “Sparking” and “sangria” we proclaim, and the resulting quencher hits the spot - a wine glass brimming with French blended Claude Val 2008 red wine, pineapple juice, brandy, cassis, sweet mango purée, and sparkling soda. For firsts - two spins on salad from Peasant’s two menus. We go “Classic” with Beet Salad and “Of The Moment” with Grilled Romaine Heart. Beet Salad sees slices of roasted beet and walnut-studded goat cheese accented with arugula and spinach. Meanwhile, the parmesan-dusted Grilled Romaine has slipped between its leaves warm luscious strands of chicken confit and oven-dried tomato. Torn croutons bring on major crunch. Seconds get meaty. Hefty Tourtiere is an eye and mouthful. Ground lamb and pork get embraced by firm ‘n’ flaky pastry crust. A side of poutine featuring silky gravy and aged cheddar makes this savoury plate a seasonal must-eat. A crisp Greek wine contrasts strikingly. Kouros 2009 Rhoditis is a delicate cleanser with hints of pear, lemon and melon. Rustic Rabbit is as wholesome as it gets. Mingling with the lean meat are cuttings of cabbage and carrot, as well as seedy herbed quinoa. To match? An earthy red wine - Bacalhôa’s 2009 Serra de Azeitão - squeezing Tempranillo, Syrah, Touriga Nacional and Merlot all into one bottle. The evening’s dessert, Dark Chocolate Pâté, is pure seduction. Slices of dense chocolate paste are scooped with red wine and cinnamon poached figs, hazelnut and vanilla bean crème fraiche. (Tip: The Peasant froths a fine cappuccino too!)
Peasant Cookery 100-283 Bannatyne Avenue
Nestled beside Red Cactus lounge in the heart of Corydon is Winnipeg’s best-kept secret: Civita. Named after a majestic hilltop town in Italy, Civita is a visionary - offering the city’s first wood-fired pizza back in ‘89. Today, Civita is an ideal dining spot with a lounge, patio, eclectic drinks, friendly service, and expertly concocted cuisine. Embraced by a warm atmosphere, we let seasoned Chef Mark Andrew plate a topnotch meal from Civita’s new winter menu. The night’s drink special is Red Cactus’ Amber Ale. The amber pint sips smooth and unexpectedly light. Jalapeno Martini sees brine bloom into a quencher. Smooth Dutch EFFEN vodka gets shaken with jalapeno juice and accented with a juicy hot pepper. Appetizers have something for everyone. Selections include Pine Nut Crusted Chicken Tenders, Mussels glazed in brandy, and the popular Grilled Caesar Salad. A new Civita staple is the Beef in Puff Pastry. Flaky pastry wraps around medium rare AAA Angus tenderloin. Sumptuous accent is found with a hearty black pepper demi-glace. The best calamari in town! That’s the rumour - so we order a plate. A delight! Calamari are lightly breaded, wetted with garlic aioli, speckled with black sesame seed, and splashed with lemon. Entrées offer tempting spins on pasta, rice, and meat that include Pork Tenderloin, newbies like a Shrimp Curry Bowl, and Sweet Potato Ravioli. Seafood pasta lets black pepper linguine get tangled up with shrimp, scallop, mussel, and calamari, as well as cherry tomato and artichoke heart. A simple but satisfying white wine broth ties it together. The seduction continues with a Fat Bastard Shiraz. Rich with blackberries and licorice, this red might be over the top ... but hey, who cares! Civita’s best known for gourmet thin crust pizza. Oak, ash, and maple mingle with fresh ingredients and are baked on Italian herb or whole-wheat crust. An 8-inch or 12-inch signature Civita is a zesty layering of pesto, spicy capicolla, sweet caramelized onion, artichoke heart, sundried tomato, and ooey-gooey brie. And a lively Barefoot Californian White Zinfandel brings on the zip with peach, strawberry and pear. Raspberry Almond Pie finishes. Thick and jammy raspberries get packed into buttery crust, then adorned with almond, chocolate, and whipped cream.

Fresh takes on fast food Thanks be to boon! Winnipeg’s sprouted an all-vegetarian burger joint - boon burger café is Canada’s first! boon’s bonanza? Fresh takes on fast food: animal-free plant-based ingredients are transformed into wholesome fare good for your taste buds, your bod, and the environment. The menu features nine inspired burgers, ranging from a curry-laced Buddha to a plain Jane ‘joe.’ Sandwiched in soft ancient organic whole-grain buns, burgers are accented with pickles and raw garnishes like shredded beet and marigold buds. Sides of soup, sesame-potato fries, and garden salad are hearty add-ons. Hop to the counter, place an order and then steal a spot at the hefty communal picnic tables! For drinks, the signature boon lassi is a purple quencher frothing up frozen organic banana, blueberries, and orange juice for silky sips. You can also fetch a bottle of sparkling San Pellegrino mineral water from boon’s well-stocked fridge. Showcasing a grilled mushroom-rice patty, the signature boon burger layers on crispy onion, cucumber, tomato, and lettuce with sauces of mayo and dijon. Homemade peach chutney gives a sweet kick. And a handsome side of “not the same ol’poutine” is quickly forked up - fries are hand-cut, drizzled with olive oil, baked, then smothered with vegan gravy and melted dairy-free Daiya Mozzarella Style Shreds. It’s no surprise that the thanksgiving burger is a favourite. A schnitzel-like “turkey” patty gets layered with onion, maple glazed yams, lettuce, and then lathered in mayo, tart cranberry sauce, and thick gravy. A heap of garden salad boasts fresh raw veggies, seeds, raisins, and savoury house dressing. The phish burger is also a prime catch. Fritter-like, the phish patty suggests the sea alongside toppings of tartar sauce, pickles, lemon, red onion, firm tomato, and lettuce. A side of rich ‘n’ feisty curried lentil soup also gets spooned. Organic teas and coffee finish. Black Currant Tea is a jaw-dropper with sharp berry flavour and hot ‘n’ syrupy Vitamin C-rich draughts. Another turn-on is a spiced cup of Karma Sutra Chai with almond milk. Dark fair trade organic Americano-style coffee gets brewed up too! Sadly, for dessert, there were no coconut-studded chocolate-covered bananas left! Better boon next time.

Are Guilt and Shame useful emotions? Tips from Dr. Darek Dawda of DAVDA Psychology* By Mathilda Waters
According to our expert on well-being, Dr. Darek Dawda of DAVDA Psychology, shame is bad, and guilt is good (in moderation).
MW: Could you start by defining guilt and shame for me?
MW: What about people who feel guilty a lot?
Dr. DD: Guilt is the bad feeling we get when we do something wrong, or fail to do the right thing. Shame is similar to guilt, but it differs in that it is a deeper overall feeling of inadequacy or unworthiness without clear cause. So guilt stems from doing a bad thing while shame is the feeling that you are a bad person.
Dr. DD: People who feel a lot of guilt likely experience a good deal of underlying shame. Alternatively, guilt-ridden people may have difficulties taking responsibility for their wrongdoings, and thus end up accumulating unresolved guilt over time.
MW: These emotions are pretty negative. Are you going to tell me they’re useful too? Dr. DD: Let’s start with shame. A ‘shaming culture’ is one in which people who break the rules are controlled by being shamed. Fear of being shamed then keeps everyone in line. Our own culture uses shaming practices to some extent. However, shaming is potentially very harmful psychologically, because it strikes at the core of the person. If you internalize shaming messages, you end up feeling inherently bad, sinful, worthless or dirty. Serious psychological problems can be traced back to being shamed. MW: Why is it that shame strikes at the core of the person? Dr. DD: Because shame is acquired early in life, before we develop the logical capacity to analyze whether the messages we receive make sense. Children don’t have the cognitive tools to defend themselves from shaming messages. MW: What about guilt? Dr. DD: Guilt is a much more useful emotion, because it targets specific actions, not the whole person. When you do things you shouldn’t be doing (e.g., hurt others), or don’t do the things you should be doing (e.g., procrastinate), it is a healthy reaction to feel guilty. Guilt gives you very useful information. If you pay attention to it, you will know what changes will lead you to becoming a better person. When your actions are no longer harmful, you won’t feel guilty. MW: So we should let guilt be our guide? Dr. DD: Yes, at least to some extent. Guilt is the voice of our conscience that helps us distinguish between right and wrong. Never feeling guilty is a sign of psychopathology, which often leads to hurting others.
38 | STYLE MANITOBA | winter 2010
MW: How does one deal with shame and guilt? Dr. DD: Ideally, one needs to overcome shame and develop a healthy relationship with guilt. MW: How is that done? Dr. DD: The answer isn’t simple, but a good place to start is to stop avoiding these feelings. We need to face guilt and shame to learn from these emotions. The problem of course is that guilt and shame don’t feel good, and we have a natural tendency to avoid unpleasant feelings. This is true especially of people who have accumulated a lot of unresolved shame and guilt. So instead of acknowledging and overcoming their shame, some people might fall into chronic self-blame that can lead to depression. In extreme cases, people might feel bad no matter what they do. Alternatively, one might unjustly blame others, in order to deflect the feeling of guilt. MW: So you are saying that in order to feel good about ourselves, we need to allow ourselves to feel bad from time to time? Dr. DD: Taking responsibility for one’s wrongdoings and working towards becoming a better person is one of the most self-empowering things one can do. So the idea is to free yourself from shame, make guilt your friend, and give yourself the opportunity to become the best human being you can be. * DAVDA Psychology is a psychotherapy and personal coaching clinic. Egg Sushi 6 eggs 2 tsp (10 mL) soy sauce 2 tsp (10 mL) minced, fresh ginger 1 tsp (5 mL) wasabi paste 1 cup (250 mL) shredded Mozzarella cheese Cooking spray Additional soy sauce, pickled ginger, wasabi paste for dipping Sushi Fillings Very thin strips of crab surimi, blanched asparagus, green onion, alfalfa sprouts, red pepper, cucumber, and avocado, etc. Beat together eggs, soy sauce, ginger and wasabi paste. Heat an 8-inch (20 cm), nonstick skillet over medium-high heat. Spray with cooking spray. Pour in one quarter (1/3 cup or 75 mL) of the egg mixture. As mixture sets at edges, gently push cooked portions toward the centre with a spatula. Tilt and rotate the skillet to allow uncooked egg to flow into the empty spaces. Sprinkle evenly with one quarter of the cheese. Cover and cook for one minute or until cheese is melted. Use the spatula to loosen the edges of the omelette. Slide onto a plate and let cool slightly. Arrange a row of sushi fillings along one end of the omelette. Roll up pinwheel style to enclose fillings. Trim the edges and cut into rounds. Repeat with remaining egg mixture, cheese and fillings to make 4 sushi rolls. Serve with additional wasabi paste, pickled ginger and soy sauce. Makes 4 servings.
Éclairs 1 cup (250 mL) boiling water ½ cup (125 mL) butter ¼ tsp (1 mL) salt 1 cup (250 mL) all-purpose flour 4 eggs Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C). Place water, butter and salt in a saucepan and bring to a boil. When butter is melted and mixture is boiling, incorporate flour all at once. Stir rapidly until mixture forms a ball that comes away from the sides of the pan. Do not overcook as this will cause the flour and fat to separate. Remove from heat and add eggs, unbeaten, one at a time, mixing well after each addition. A mixer or food processor is ideal for this job as long beating is the secret to a tender puff. Grease a cookie sheet or line with parchment paper. Form paste into desired shape, forming dough with the back of a spoon. 1 tbsp (15 mL)
of mixture makes 1 large puff or éclair; 1 tsp (5 mL) of mixture makes 1 bite size puff. Éclairs are rectangular shaped puffs 3 inches to 4 inches long by 1 inch wide, best shaped using a pastry bag. Baking the éclairs: A very hot oven is essential to puff the paste. Bake at 425°F (220°C) for 30 minutes or until well risen and set. Reduce heat to 325°F (160°C) for about 10 to 15 minutes or until éclairs are dry and golden in colour. When baked, place éclairs on a wire rack until cool. When shells are cold, fill the éclairs with sweetened whipped cream, ice
cream, or custard. Sprinkle with icing sugar and drizzle with chocolate or butterscotch sauce or sweetened fruits in season. Makes 1 dozen éclairs or 7 dozen bite-sized puffs. Filling variations: Cream pie filling Lemon custard Savory cheese spreads, chicken, fish and seafood

Bob Mersereau contacted a whole kettle of musicians, critics, and just plain fans and asked them to name their favourite Canadian singles. Then he counted the votes and came up with The 100 Top Canadian Singles (Gooselane). It’s a big and beautiful coffee-table book with loads of photos and interviews, listing everything from The Guess Who to Wintersleep. This is a book for debate if not argument. But really, should You Oughta Know really only outrank 1234 by one spot? Rise Up and Seasons in the Sun besting Cinnamon Girl? Self-proclaimed music geek Mersereau reminds everyone that the book is a survey and not his personal picks, but really, there’s no excuse for #4. But way to go Canada for putting a song about a shipwreck in the top 20! David Bergen might add to his awards-laden mantelpiece with his newest novel, The Matter With Morris (Harper Collins). Morris is a Jaguar-driving newspaper columnist (is that really possible in Canada?) who pushed his son into enlisting in the Canadian army only to have him killed by friendly fire in Afghanistan. So Morris separates from his wife and holes up in a Corydon-area condo reading philosophy, and begins a dalliance by letter with a married American woman who also lost a son to war. There’s an awkward experience with a young prostitute and an angry letter to the Prime Minister. What’s the matter with Morris is that he’s a self-involved crank but give Bergen kudos for basing his latest character on a thoroughly unlikable individual. “Why is it so hard to find locally grown food in Saskatchewan?” Saskatoon food writer Amy Jo Ehman asked herself, and what could she do about it? She and her husband pledged to eat as much locally sourced food as they could manage, which turned out to be an awful lot: chickpea bread, prairie berry clafoutis, pasta primavera with fiddleheads. She tells us about their experiences in Prairie Feast: A Writer’s Journey Home for Dinner (Coteau), a book about discovery and great food. There were challenges, sure, but everything was worth it, Ehman assures us in this delightful book. It’s all about reconnecting with what you eat, and she and her husband are still at it - with mouth-watering photos and even some recipes.

Bettye LaVette Interpretations One of the great but overlooked vocalists of the last few decades, Bettye LaVette had her first hit when she was 16 years old, way back in 1962. Still, she’s found steady chart success elusive. But nothing and no one holds Bettye LaVette back. The latest evidence of her reemergence is Interpretations (Anti): LaVette takes the cream of British rock all the way down to Soulsville. She funks up The Beatles by ripping into The Word, schools us on the R&B roots of Led Zeppelin, and dares to make Pink Floyd’s Wish You Were Here her own. The Stones, Traffic, Derek and the Dominos, and The Moody Blues all get worked over too. With a voice that’s equal parts smoky, whiskey, and fierce, her live version of The Who’s Love Reign O’er Me is hot like incandescent and cool like florescent.

john lennon Gimme Some Truth There’s more to John Lennon’s solo work than Imagine and Watching the Wheels, and Gimme Some Truth (Capitol) proves it on four CDs. Seventy-two tracks by Lennon (and Yoko Ono of course) remind us that besides being a counterculture hero and touchstone for Boomer nostalgia, the one-time Beatle was a complicated figure; angry and loving, worldly and insular. The accompanying booklet has photos and an essay by Anthony DeCurtis but is short on track details. Who’s complaining though, when you get Working Class Hero, Instant Karma, and Power to the People on the very first CD? There’s a whole disc of Lennon exploring his rock & roll roots, too. Plus Happy Xmas (War is Over), Give Peace a Chance, Jealous Guy, and my personal favourite - Mind Games. Tracey Thorn Love And Its Opposite From the opening notes on Tracey Thorn’s latest, you know your ears are in good, um, hands. The singing half of longtime bedsit faves, the continuing evolving Everything But the Girl, Thorn has one of the dreamiest voices in pop music, and Love And Its Opposite (Merge) is a 10-card hand of maturity, grace and beauty. Most of the tunes are Thorn originals and most are musically low-key (harking back to some of EBTG’s earlier work) although Thorn kicks it up for some motherly advice on Hormones and covers Lee Hazlewood on “Come On Home To Me.” With a guest appearance from the wonderfully quirky Swedish troubadour Jens Lekman, this is perfect melancholy gorgeousness. Just listen to the way she croons on that very first track, “Oh, the Divorces!”

Making the leap In just a few short years, Winnipeg-based visual artist Bronwyn Thorndycraft has gained local, national and international recognition for her artwork all because she took a leap of faith. Inspired by a lifetime love of art and a desire to put her self-taught creative skills to constructive use, Thorndycraft decided in 2006 to pursue her true calling with more focus. “I asked myself what I wanted to do with my life, and decided to go for it, even if I failed.” It turned out to be a good decision. Working from the bedroom of her St. Vital home, she has since produced dozens of original works of art that inspire others as much as she was inspired to create them. “I always drew when I was a kid, mostly comic strip type of drawings,” she says. This playful, cartoonish approach eventually found its way into her adulthood in the form of tongue-in-cheek,
44 | STYLE MANITOBA | winter 2010
humorous and sometimes provocative caricatures that are available as prints. Thorndycraft also designed a line of clay jewellery that she sells at craft shows. She produced a series of linear paintings before evolving her style further in the funky and colourful artwork that have become her signature. When approaching a canvas, “I try not to think things through too much,” she says, instead preferring to turn the canvas around until it “seems right.” Thorndycraft enjoys working with acrylics over oils since acrylics dry quickly, blend well and are easy to use, allowing her to achieve fluid brushstrokes and use layers of paint to build to a crescendo of colour. Adding texture gel provides further dimension to her works, which often appear lit from within, thanks to her deft talents with metallic paint and highlighting techniques. By working with the negative/positive interplay
By Leigh Patterson between black and white, she is able to create the illusion of movement within the piece. Earth elements figure prominently in Thorndycraft’s works, from trees to water to flowers and plants. Other pieces are less earthbound, resembling planets, or a universe waiting to be interpreted and explored via the viewer’s imagination. Still other pieces, such as Leaving the demons behind, come from a cathartic place within the artist. Overall, Thorndycraft strives in her art to create a sense of whimsy and fantasy, “something that relaxes you and takes you away, even if just for a moment.” Many clients appreciate the life and beauty represented in Thorndycraft’s artwork, responding to the positive vibe inherent in the pieces. She has produced a number of commissioned works, including one of a wolf that she was able to create in her own style.
The act of creating her art provides a fulfilling escape for the artist as well. “I’ve always been a creative person, but just started later in life. I know it will continue forever,” she says, adding that she would like to inspire and motivate others to do what they want to do, especially if they have a creative side. This self-described “little chick from Winnipeg” says that one of her greatest personal achievements was having her art featured in the 2010 New Art International, a renowned art journal. Thorndycraft is looking forward to participating in the annual group show running from December 5-29, 2010 at Wayne Arthur Gallery, and in a showing at the cre8tery’s Auxiliary Gallery later this winter. In the meantime, she will undoubtedly continue to take more leaps of faith as she grows and evolves her art. Website: www.bronwynart.com

From their first ad hoc performance in a Winnipeg music store, Juno Award -winning trio The Wailin’ Jennys have proved to be fan favourites, racking up countless live performances and releasing four CDs. Last year saw a live recording, while next year brings new studio work. But the Jennys’ Ruth Moody and Nicky Mehta have made the band into a DIY project, managing things themselves. “It’s been really rewarding for us to be so hands-on,” says Moody. “It’s a lot of work, and most of the time we feel like we don’t have lives outside the band because it takes a lot of time and energy. But at the same time it’s gratifying to know that you are able to oversee every side of the business that you’ve created.” “Running one’s own business is an immense amount of work with no clear work week - we work all the time!” Mehta adds. “But no one cares more about our band than we do.” Mehta and Moody both live in Winnipeg but Jenny Number Three, Heather Masse, lives in the United States. Masse joined the band a few years ago, studying in New York before she joined the trio.
“It’s been almost four years,” Moody says. “She’s amazing, a wonderful person and a wonderful musician. She brought a new angle to the band. She’s trained in jazz. Nicky and I got so lucky with her. Heather lives in the Catskills now, and that limits us in some ways. But it’s kind of nice because it forces boundaries for us. Nicky and I are workaholics and if we all lived in the same city it would never stop.” Next winter, the band will release their latest CD, recorded with new producer Mark Howard and old friend David Travers-Smith. Howard has worked with everyone from Daniel Lanois and Marianne Faithfull to Tom Waits and Emmylou Harris, while TraversSmith has a long history of working with the band. “I think it’ll be the best of both worlds,” Moody says. “It’ll be a mix of the new and the familiar. We’re really excited about how things are sounding. It features new songs from each of us and I think we’re all pushing ourselves and exploring new territories in our writing,” she adds. “Nicky wrote some great pop songs, Heather wrote a beautiful lullaby and a sort of Andrews Sisters-style love song, which is a lot of fun to sing. I wrote a kind of bluesy gospel
song, which is kind of new for me. We’re covering a lot of different genres - roots, pop, country, Celtic, a touch of jazz and a little bit of gospel - so I think it’s going to be an exciting and diverse record.” “It’s the first studio album with Heather,” Mehta adds. “It feels like a really full, complete and varied album. This record has taken longer than any previous release but that’s a strength I think. We’ve had a chance to live with the songs a bit, which is different, and it’s allowed us to refine them and know them better.” Added to the Jenny mix is a pair of well-travelled toddlers. Mehta gave birth to twin boys a few years ago. “Yes, the boys have been on the road with us since we went back out,” she says. “They were seven months old when we started touring and it’s a lot of hard work but [my partner] Grant and I feel really lucky to be able to travel with our family. They are great travellers all around, and they seem to love meeting new people and being in the thick of it. It’s changed touring life a lot – it’s always been a lot of work but now it’s totally crazy, but we’ve survived!”
After touring for a chunk of 2010, the Jennys will take a break before hitting the road again in early 2011. Well, most of the trio will get time off. “I don’t get a holiday because I insanely booked a solo tour for myself in November,” Moody says. “I’m home for only four days before my first cross-Canada solo tour. The nice thing is, the band gets three months off. We’ve been touring since February.” Mehta agrees. “It’s so important to reconnect with our personal lives, our friends and family and to get a chance to live in one place for a while,” she says. “It’s always been tricky to find a balance with work and the rest of our lives, so any opportunity to have time in our own cities with loved ones is appreciated,” she says. “We’re working on business when we’re home, so it’s not a total break, but we’re not running around from city to city, so we can take some time to take a breath, look around and see what we’ve done and figure out where we need to go.”
“Nicky is the multi-tasking queen,” Moody points out.

A visit to the Provencher Avenue store is like opening a mysterious present wrapped in multiple layers. The floral case may feature a funky red handbag hanging next to a dozen white roses paired with kale and highlighted with delicate silver thread. Silk pashminas in a rainbow of vibrant colours, a reversible scarf trimmed with Tibetan lambs wool, fine leather gloves for men and women, leather purses, even a pair of purple suede boots are among the items just waiting for the right person. All products are carefully chosen to delight, inspire and enliven the senses. Signature Floral Gallery carries a line of assorted loose teas, as well as Harden and Huyse fine chocolates that can be packaged into sweet little purse boxes. A variety of giftware, Torani Italian syrups, Belgian chocolate dessert and gateau mixes, and other gourmet food items make perfect hostess gifts. All of these indulgences can be combined into an infinite number of beautifully wrapped gift presentations that will make ideal corporate gifts with the right embellishments. Of course, van Reenen has established a reputation for her one-of-a-kind “living art” floral arrangements. “Flowers have that ability to make people smile, and the holidays offer so many opportunities to send something unique and uplifting, especially when you add a twist and an element of surprise.” She incorporates fresh and silk greenery into holiday arrangements for the home, designing outdoor planters, decorative garlands for mantels and banisters, and table centrepieces with a definitive “wow” factor. Whether you plan to continue your holiday traditions or establish new ones, opening the door to Signature Floral Gallery is the place to begin the journey and share the beauty of the season. Engage in the experience at Signature’s Open House December 6-9.
Musical Motivation Every year, Kids Help Phone helps Canadian children who may find themselves at risk from everything from parental abuse to bullying. Nationally, numbers are large with Kids Help Phone assisting more than 2.2 million times. In Manitoba alone, Kids Help Phone has offered a lifeline to children and youth on more than 100,000 occasions. Kids Help Phone is Canada’s only phone and online counselling service for youth. It’s free, anonymous and confidential. Professional counsellors are available any time of the day or night, 365 days a year, to help young people deal with concerns large or small. Now you can help kids from Manitoba by supporting a new initiative for Kids Help Phone. To help raise much needed funds, Michael Sanders of Absurd Machine, and John Toone of Alchemical Press joined forces with Nathan Terin to create Call Response – Present, Past & Beyond, a new coffee-table book about Winnipeg’s youth and its music scene. “We are very fortunate to be partnering with Michael and John on this new fundraising initiative,” says Nathan Terin, Manager, Community Fundraising and Corporate Development for Kids Help Phone. The book will be available in bookstores this February for $40, or people can order in advance for only $25 by visiting the website at www.callresponsebook.com.” All content was supplied by the public, and the book will be in a 12 by 12- inch LP-style format that will offer a wealth of historic and contemporary photography, and commentary on the city’s live music scene. Plans are for a 60 to 80-page hardcover edition. “A minimum of $10 from each sale will go directly to Kids Help Phone,” says Terin, noting that participants like Be:Cause Industries, Absurd Machine and Alchemical Press all stepped up to donate time and services to help. The book will also be printed in Manitoba by Friesens Corporation. “Call Response is a good way to maintain our connection with youth who view music as a key point of focus/ distraction in their lives. The book’s goal is to increase awareness for Kids Help Phones and their funding base so that they can offer more assistance in an area that is not diminishing in its need,” he notes.

According to Terin (who started as a volunteer and became a fulltime staffer in October of this year), the book was an offshoot from the popular concert and workshop series that he has put together over the past six years. “Call Response is the next step for us in a program where we are using music as a bridge between Kids Help Phone and the community,” says Terin. Hunting for holiday treasures By Leigh Patterson Strains of 1950s music play in the background, wind chimes tinkle, jewellery and ornaments shine and warm smiles abound. Welcome to Great Finds Fashion Accessories, where today’s best fashion finds meet friendly customer service. “Wow!” It’s the word most often uttered by first time visitors to the store, says owner Laurie Carey, who set up this fun and funky little shop in Southdale Shopping Mall off Fermor Avenue over seven years ago. Great Finds is a veritable one-stop shop where you can select an affordable, fashionable gift, have it gift-wrapped and dash off to a party. But if you have the time, you will want to linger over a treasure trove of accessories, jewellery, gift wear, home décor, beauty products, clothing and much, much more. Combined with a relaxing, fun atmosphere, the store is truly the height of “retail therapy.” People from all over Winnipeg and even around the country flock to Great Finds for the latest the store has to offer. Since the inventory is constantly changing, that one-of-a-kind item might be there one week and gone the next. Carey goes on buying junkets eight times a year to ensure the freshest looks make it to her store shelves. Great Finds is best known for its extensive jewellery collection, which is typically two years ahead of the current trends. Rings, watches, earrings, necklaces, bangles in all styles and colours imaginable are available here, along with jewellery trees and storage boxes. Designer jewellery by local talent ties into the community-oriented vibe of the store. Two of the most popular artists include Tannis Wilson of Covet Designs, who fashions wearable art from hammered aluminium, and Gina of gina Original jewellery, who makes handcrafted, oneof-a-kind pieces incorporating Swarovski crystals and other gems. Also featured is local artist Shelly Pastreck of Steel & Stuff, who creates metal wall art in three-dimensional steel using a plasma cutting torch. Her custom-made pieces are part of Great Finds’ eclectic collection of metal artwork that enlivens both indoor and outdoor spaces. Photo frames, folk art-inspired bird houses, stained glass artwork and canvas art prints are among the many home décor options to suit every budget and taste. Great Finds carries colourful Romero Britto art collectibles, including travel mugs, tea pots, and salt and
pepper shakers, as well as an adorable Britto Bears Collection. Clothing takes up a third of the store, with exceptional and distinctive styles that convey fun and flair for women of all ages. Cute jersey tunics paired with leggings, sweater dresses, rhinestone-studded jean capris, a “newspaper” jacket, reversible black/leopard print cape, and washable leather-look jackets are just some of the distinctive looks for casual and formal times. Great Finds carries two lines of trendy plussized clothes and dresses from U.S.-based SWAK (Sealed With A Kiss) and Zoe of Canada. Amazing, comfortable Shapeez bras help keep a smooth shape underneath the clingiest clothes. Of course, Great Finds carries an infinite number of accessories to go with every outfit, from whimsical purses by ESPE, to dressy shoes and sandals with bling, to luxurious and colourful scarves and trendy sunglasses. The store is a popular destination for brides-to-be looking for the ultimate hair accessory to wear on their wedding day.

Swimmingly
beautiful By Leigh Patterson With cold and snow upon us, and warm weather destinations beckoning, Diva Lingerie is the place to go to this winter. Renowned for providing high quality underfashions and essential bra fitting services to Winnipeg women, Diva Lingerie has undergone a natural transition to include the latest collections of designer swimwear among the store’s many fabulous offerings. By returning to their undergarment suppliers to obtain these new collections, store owner Devica Bhairo ensures her clients can enjoy the consistency of fit within their favourite underwear lines so that choosing the perfect bathing suit is as easy as a tropical breeze. And since there is more selection at this time of the year than at any other, now is the best time to splurge on beautiful swimwear at Diva Lingerie. Empreinte from Paris and Freya Fantasie Swimwear from England are among the brasized designer swimwear lines represented at Diva Lingerie’s Grant Park Mall location. Freya Fantasie swimwear is available in cup sizes from D to GG. The collection from Maryan Mehlhorn Swimwear of Germany comes in ultra-luxurious fabrics and beautifully designed one-pieces that hug in all the right places. Diva Lingerie is also launching the 2011 Vicky Moreinis swimwear collection from Columbia, which offers fresh, contemporary styling that appeals to fashion-forward young women. Pieces are versatile: fun and funky two-pieces can be mixed and matched to provide the best possible fit.
With the perfect fit accounted for, the most difficult choice a woman will make when deciding on her suit is colour and pattern. Express a wild side with an on-trend leopard print swimsuit or exude sexy sophistication in a simple black one-piece embellished with a little bling. Glamorous numbers embellished with beading and appliqués are just right for lounging around a resort pool, and can easily transition from day wear into eveningwear. Complementing Diva Lingerie’s extensive inventory of swimwear are luxury brand coverups and loungewear by Hanro, Princesse tam. tam, Lundstrom and others. These easy wearing items move effortlessly from beach to poolside party and are lightweight and ideal to pack for travel. Many pieces - like a versatile tank top by Hanky Panky - look great worn on their own or look pretty peeking out from underneath a light-
weight sweater or wrap. All of these pieces are perfect for destination weddings. Whether treating yourself or buying a lovely gift for a special woman in your life, Diva Lingerie’s undergarments, swimwear, cruisewear and sleepwear are carefully chosen to blend seamlessly with a woman’s lifestyle while ensuring the most comfortable fit for all shapes, sizes and ages. The store’s experienced staff will assist you in deciding among the sheer array of fabrics, styles, colours and best fit. Diva Lingerie gift certificates are always a thoughtful present for wives, moms, daughters and girlfriends. Of course, the gift of exquisite lingerie is always appreciated. And now, more Winnipeg women will enjoy their winter vacations in style with fashionable swimwear from Diva Lingerie.

Return to glamour & romance This holiday season, the focus is on putting the glamour and romance back into hair. Kaitlyn’s hair and Danusja’s make-up artistry created this beautiful look fit for up and coming Christmas parties or a New Year’s Eve Bash. Kaitlyn used a double barrel curling iron to give the hair soft wave, put Natasha’s hair up using hairpins, and then accented the look with a hair accessory that she designed herself. (Book your consult with her now if you’d like a custom designed hair accent - she can personalize a piece to complement both your hair and outfit.)

Simple elegance Gone are the days of tightly curled up-do’s... This holiday season keep it simple yet elegant. To create a smoother softer look, try using larger sections of hair when curling or pinning it up. Winter wow factor! Undecided about length? Short, long, or both. Don’t let your hair go into hibernation this winter! Try on one of these looks this season. Taryn’s sandy coloured hair is softly tapered short around sides and back, leaving the top and front long and disconnected. Heavily textured for body and interest, finish the movement into a sweeping fringe with “Dust It” powder. Justine’s raven locks, usually shorter, have been extended using the “Loop and Lock” hair extension system. Razor and cut for precise blending. ‘Tis the season… Turn up the charm Find your way into the heart of any scrooge this holiday season with an up-do inspired by the doe-eyed innocent, Cindy Lou Who. There’s nothing sexier than a girl who knows how to have fun. To get Amy’s look, start by teasing the roots of your hair to get some volume. Then pull it back into a ponytail at the crown of your head and keep wrapping elastics at one-inch intervals until you get to the end of your ponytail. Holiday parties are the perfect opportunity to try something fun and original. Don’t take your hair too seriously; get creative. Start your own trend. Straight to the point and always alluring, a ‘60s glam hairstyle never gets old with its big curls, bounce and loose moveable style. But a great look is only complete when the make-up artist is done. It’s all about blacks, shimmers, sparkles and textures this season. To capture this smoky look, Sexy Black Quo eyeliner was expertly applied and wrapped all around the eye, with black sparkly shadow brushed over the lid to add drama. This combination of blacks and shimmers makes eyes seductive and sexy. Top it off with dramatic false lashes to make eyes stand out, and finish with a kiss of pink lipstick. There’s no need to leave the comfort of your own home to achieve this sultry look, as this mobile make-up artist comes to you. With this wide slate of options at their fingertips, the clinic professionals can recommend the best options, based on individual goals and lifestyle factors. In another instance, a combination of surgery, photodynamic therapy and injectables could be the ideal solution.
“They can get a complete range of services at the same place,” notes Dr. Anthony Lockwood, the full-time cosmetic plastic surgeon at the helm of the clinic. First Glance specializes not only in cosmetic surgery procedures but also in laser techniques and other non-surgical procedures such as injectables.

Every detail of the décor projects the concern for aesthetics practiced by the professionals within. That is why the Lockwoods of First Glance Aesthetic Clinic asked Calmas Designs
to create just the right setting. The husband and wife team knew they could rely on E.J. Wiens-Hiebert and his team to understand exactly what was needed. The project combined the city’s leading designers and installers, including Calmas Design, California Masonry, Kehler Made, That Furniture Guy and many more. Coincidentally, Calmas Design is also a husband and wife team. Together E.J. and Sharon Wiens-Hiebert created all the designs for this project. “We can work hand-in-hand with everybody, from architects and designers,
“Technology is advancing so fast that it takes a concerted effort to keep up,” says Dr. Lockwood. “That’s where being a full time cosmetic surgeon becomes important. You live, eat and breathe what’s new so you can always offer your client the best possible service.” He adds that having a dedicated clinic translates into more reliable and flexible scheduling for patients. At the same time, procedures can be coordinated to optimize both timing and results. Amanda Lockwood points out that while results are of foremost importance, a client’s overall experience is equally important. After all, First Glance is more than a clinic.

contractors, business owners and homeowners,” notes E.J. Wiens-Hiebert. For this project, the entire concept was developed in-house by Calmas Design. The result: a perfect setting for the services the clinic has to offer. Many clients come to the Lockwoods looking for a rejuvenation process. Similarly, the owners of First Glance wanted to realize their vision of the space by making changes to the existing building while keeping the elements that already worked. For instance, Calmas Design kept the original black ceramic tiles that run from the foyer to the back of the clinic. But now, a pebblestone wall graces the sitting area across from the counter. And in the space leading to the dermatologist’s primary consultation room, a wall clad in glass mosaic tile sits in an attractive riverstone base. Stone Trends and Hard Surfaces supplied all the durable hard surface materials—granite, slate, quartz, porcelain, stone veneers, hardwoods, bamboo and glass – used throughout the entire projects. These earth-based elements imbue the centre with a natural calm. “By creating a spa environment for clients, we want to give them a better experience,” says Amanda Lockwood, adding that a clinical setting can put people on edge. “A lot of our clients appreciate that we don’t wear scrubs or a lab coat when we meet with them. It helps them relax.” In order to maintain that ambiance of calm and repose, the centre’s interior doors glide soundlessly thanks to a custom-made roller system created by Kehler Made, a valued member of the specialized team brought together by Wiens-Hiebert. The custom metalwork company also created the stainless steel base – which they designed with Calmas Design – for the reception counter adjacent to one of the several waiting areas throughout the clinic. Indeed, for those who come to First Glance for plastic surgery or aesthetic treatments,
having access to a private waiting room provides further peace of mind. Anchored by a stone-clad fireplace, the space is an inviting refuge away from the bustle of the front foyer. A rear entrance equipped with a camera and an intercom system ensures privacy and easy accessibility. The décor is carefully conceived to promote comfort and serenity. Suedine upholstered walls set a soft tone, punctuated by the warmth of the fireplace where two life-sized Balinese statues stand guard. One wall is graced with a tapestry backdrop from the set of the musical Chicago. Another features a large canvass from internationally renowned Winnipeg artist Roger LaFrenière.
Inspired by a visit to Tofino, the painting portrays grasses sprinkled with pine needles floating in the surf on Long Beach. Appreciating the fact that savvy Manitobans espouse both global tastes and strong local roots, Calmas Design decided to accent the space with art sourced both locally and internationally. People who come to First Glance Aesthetic Clinic appreciate beauty. So it makes sense that they should enjoy the chance to experience art in all its forms. Exclusive to the clinic—and available for sale—artwork from around the world contributes to the refined ambiance. All the art is sourced through Stone Trends and Hard Surfaces. “This is the only place in Manitoba where this artwork is available,” winter 2010 | STYLE MANITOBA | 61
62 | STYLE MANITOBA | winter 2010
points out E.J. Wiens-Hiebert. “Many pieces are purchased directly from Asia, Africa and Italy. We bring the best of art from around the world to you.” Clients also come to First Glance for renewal. So it is fitting that the artwork should be frequently replenished for a continually changing visual experience. Just like the level of service provided by the clinic, this living art gallery is an experience like no other.
In the front foyer alone, there are two pieces from South Africa. A stunning blue vase in hand-blown glass graces the granite counter. Not far from the front entrance, the sleek stone sculpture of a tall girl is the embodiment of a perfectly proportioned physique. It is that kind of body that some clients hope to recover with the assistance of the Lockwoods and their team. Take for example a woman in her mid-thirties, says the surgeon. After twice
gaining and losing 40 pounds during pregnancy and nursing two children, she cannot recover the tone on her abdomen, no matter how well she exercises and watches her weight. She may have stretch marks and even a caesarean scar. After expanding and deflating to various sizes, her breasts have started to sag. A “tummy tuck” is part of the solution. Or liposuction might be recommended. As for the breasts, they can be lifted or augmented. First Glance Aesthetic Clinic uses only industryleading saline and silicone breast implants from Mentor Medical Systems Canada Inc. Mentor is the only company in the world whose breast implants are made exclusively in the United States and Europe. Clients can choose between round-style or contour-shaped implants filled with either silicone gel or saline. Another option is a Spectrum adjustable saline-filled implant, which allows the surgeon to adjust the size of the implants for up to six months after surgery. For those exploring the possibility of breast augmentation, Dr. Lockwood goes over the different options to help determine the best approach for each client. Being able to determine exactly where intervention needs to be focused and what treatments will produce the best results is at the heart of every service provided by the First Glance Aesthetic Clinic, from cosmetic surgery to non-invasive procedures to vein care. winter 2010 | STYLE MANITOBA | 63
Now Available With Lidocaine
Enhances facial volume for a natural looking you. The new Restylane-L® injectable gel has been enhanced with the addition of lidocaine in order to reduce patient discomfort during treatment. As we get older, we may begin to lose facial tissue volume. Restylane adds volume with hyaluronic acid, a substance also found naturally in our skin. To help restore facial contours and help you attain a more youthful appearance, ask your aesthetic physician about Restylane, the world’s number one selling dermal filler with over 9 million treatments worldwide.* Ask your physician today about Restylane, or visit WWW.RESTYLANE.CA The Restylane family of products includes Restylane®, Restylane-L®, Restylane Fine Lines®, Perlane®, and Perlane-L®. These products are intended for individual use to add volume to facial tissue. Restylane and Restylane-L are to be used for the correction of wrinkles, lip enhancement and facial contour augmentation. Perlane and Perlane-L are recommended for shaping the contours of the face, correcting folds and lip enhancement. Restylane-L and Perlane-L have been enhanced with the addition of lidocaine in order to reduce discomfort during treatment. Restylane Fine Lines is recommended for the correction of thin, superficial lines, for example the lines around the eyes, the lines around the mouth, the forehead lines and the smile lines.
Important Safety Considerations for the Restylane family of products
If you have a hypersensitivity to local anesthetics of the amide type, such as lidocaine, you should not use Restylane-L or Perlane-L. After your treatment, you might have some swelling, redness, pain, itching, discolouration, and tenderness at the site of treatment. This will typically last less than a week. Additionally, although rare, red or swollen small bumps may occur in some patients. In rare circumstances, the doctor may inject into a blood vessel, which can damage the skin, or in very rare cases, cause a temporary loss of vision. If you are pregnant, breastfeeding or under 18 years, you should not use the Restylane family of products. The Restylane family of products should not be injected anywhere except the skin or just under the skin. Like any injection in the skin, the implantation of the Restylane family of products carries a risk of infection. The use of the Restylane family of products at the site of skin sores, pimples, rashes, hives, cysts or infection should be postponed until healing is complete. Avoid exposure of the treated area to intense heat (such as solarium and sunbathing) or extreme cold until any initial swelling and redness have resolved. For each treatment site, a maximum dosage of 0.8 mL of Restylane Fine Lines and of 2 mL of Restylane, Restylane-L, Perlane, and Perlane-L per treatment session is recommended. The Restylane family of products should only be injected by a licensed health care professional. Complete product information and Important Safety Considerations are available at www.Restylane.ca. Ask your healthcare professional if the Restylane family of products is an appropriate treatment option for you, as it is not for everyone. *The 9 million treatments performed worldwide includes Q-Med AB HA products not available in Canada. Restylane, Restylane-L, Perlane, Perlane-L and Restylane Fine Lines are registered trade-marks of HA North American Sales AB. RESCA 10-064B 05/30/11 64 | STYLE MANITOBA | winter 2010
For instance, the Clinic uses a leading edge automated skin analysis system to scan and map the epidermis, including a three-dimensional view of pores. “It tells you everything you need to know about your skin,” says Amanda Lockwood, “about texture, pigment, hydration, oil production… and compares you to the general population.” This technology is instrumental in formulating an optimal treatment strategy. Sometimes, the most dramatic and best results can be obtained by surgery, and then maintained by a regimen of Botox and fillers. For younger patients, non-invasive procedures are often the best choice. “If you start early, you can maintain the look a lot longer,” notes Amanda Lockwood. “Trying to reverse the aging process takes more work than regular maintenance.” As an instructor in the use of Botox and fillers, she has the chance to travel across North America, teaching at the same time as learning, about new techniques. Consequently, First Glance has a broad range of options in these treatments as well. Botox continues to be a popular approach to smoothing fine lines between the brows. Delivered through a few tiny strategically placed injections, the Allergan product relaxes the muscles that cause wrinkles. Another source of wrinkles—as well as creases and folds—is the loss of collagen, which causes depressions in the skin. To address this issue, First Glance offers injections of Sculptra, a poly-L-lactic acid that stimulates production of the body’s own collagen, with results than can last up to two years. Produced by pharmaceutical company, Sanofi-Aventis Canada, Sculptra is derived from fruit acids and is both biocompatible and biodegradable. winter 2010 | STYLE MANITOBA | 65

refresh your look Juvéderm facial filler lets you instantly refresh your natural look, with no downtime. ™
ask a doctor We asked Winnipeg Plastic Surgeon Dr. Anthony Lockwood to give us the details on Juvéderm™ treatment. What is Juvéderm™? Juvéderm™ is a facial filler that your doctor injects to restore skin volume loss due to aging and to refresh your appearance. How does Juvéderm™ work? Juvéderm™ uses HA (Hyaluronic Acid), a naturally occurring sugar found in your body, that combines with the water in your skin to smooth out lines and wrinkles, enhance lips and recontour the cheeks and jawline. How long does treatment take? The actual injection process is quick and easy. It usually takes about 15 to 60 minutes, depending on the areas treated.

• Cheeks enhanced and jawline contoured with Juvéderm™ • Smile lines and lines around the mouth smoothed with Juvéderm™
When will I see results? Right away. The results are instant, so you’ll see an immediate improvement to the treated areas. Is treatment with Juvéderm™ painful? Juvéderm™ is available with pain-reducing lidocaine, so the treatment is a more comfortable experience. What about side effects? Juvéderm™ is generally well tolerated. Possible side effects are mild to moderate and are generally gone in a week. These can include temporary skin reactions such as redness, tenderness and bruising, which may be covered with light makeup. What is the recovery time after a treatment? The treatment requires minimal downtime. Most people return to their normal routines immediately.

In fact, fillers focus on replenishing what is naturally found in the body rather than introducing foreign substances. For instance, the quality and quantity of hyaluronic acid, which gives the skin its volume, starts to weaken with age, disease and injury. The result is lines and wrinkles in areas around the eyes, between the eyebrows, under the nose and around the lips. First Glance uses Perlane and Restylane injectable gels, non-animal based products provided by Medicis Aesthetics Canada. Another hyaluronic option offered at First Glance is Allergan’s Juvéderm. An injectable gel particularly effective for those wrinkles and folds in the lower third of the face, it is one of the first to be proven safe for use in skin of a darker pigment. It also has a unique smooth consistency that creates a natural look and feel. Used in combination with Botox, it can provide a pleasing “soft-lift” to both men and women. “Sometimes we use all the fillers at once to get an even more natural result,” notes Amanda Lockwood, adding that she often asks people to bring old photos of themselves to use as a visual guide in the rejuvenation process. On the other hand, addressing wrinkles is often only one part of the goal people have when they come to First Glance. Many times, corrective procedures are warranted to eliminate unwanted features such as acne scars or moles.
Levulan, a photodynamic therapy developed by Clarion Medical Technologies, can reduce the appearance of some acne scars and is particularly effective in removing precancerous sun damage and improving blotchy pigmentation. Because the BLU-U blue light used in therapy also promotes dramatic improvement in active acne vulgaris, it is ideal for adolescents as well. Individuals who approach First Glance in regard to a particular issue are pleased to find that not only can they access many services for themselves, but they can also meet the needs of their entire family. Hair removal is but one example. The wife and daughter who come in to have unwanted hair reduction from their legs and bikini line may also have a husband who wants his back hair reduced. Clarion’s LightSheer Duet is suitable for all those areas. There is often a misconception that most aesthetic treatments have been developed for women. Nothing could be further from the truth. Dr. Lockwood has extensive expertise in a variety of male-oriented treatments, including Hi-Def Abdominal and Pectoral Etching (sculpting of six-pack abs). “Everything from the neck down to the waist can be completely resculptured,” he explains. Neither are plastic surgery interventions limited to rejuvenating aging bodies and faces. Ear, nose, and eyelid surgery as well as breast, face
and buttock implants can help correct what nature may have neglected or misaligned in clients of any age. Both young and old, male and female can find the appropriate solution at First Glance, whether they are looking for a way to reduce their cellulite or seeking something as simple as Botox treatments for excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis). First Glance offers complete care for the entire family, from the young child who needs his ears pinned back to the teenager with the acne problem to the parents looking for micro-dermabrasion or a photo facial for anything from rosacea to spider veins. In fact, the Centre even has a specialized Vein Clinic that can provide sclerotherapy for a wide range of needs, including varicose veins. Procedures encompass everything from cuttingedge surgery to high-tech laser treatments. Dr. Godlewski uses a state-of-the-art duplex ultrasound mapping system, currently considered the standard of care. The machine measures the interior condition of the blood vessels. “It shows you exactly what’s wrong,” says Dr. Lockwood. “We only target the veins that are diseased.” Using state-of-the-art European techniques, varicosities are removed in segments through one to three-mm micro-incisions. medical centres worldwide, this Ambulatory Phlebectomy is the preferable technique for elderly clients. For deeper varicosities, Dr. Godlewski uses the ultrasound to guide injections of specialized foam into the underlying diseased veins. Multiple treatments rather than a single aggressive intervention are an option for those who cannot afford to take personal time away from their regular activities. These are definitely medical procedures but in no way do clients feel as if they are entering a “hospital” when they come to First Glance Aesthetic Clinic. The atmosphere and facilities promote a holistic sense of well-being that reminds clients that they are taking the personal time they deserve. Along with access to surgical and non-invasive treatments, visitors can take advantage of massage therapy, a sauna and professional make-up application. The Clinic offers Colorescience from Clarion, a line that takes mineral make-up to a whole new level. And then, there’s the massage therapy room. A plush banquette custom-created by That Furniture Guy provides comfortable seating while waiting. E.J. Wiens-Hiebert knew that he could count on the furniture specialist to provide the level of quality expected in all aspects of this superior Centre.
CONGRATULATIONS! Dr. Lockwood and the First Glance team on your exciting new clinic!
Lined in a combination of ledgestone and slate, the massage therapy area is an oasis of tranquility where dimmable lights and the sound of water flowing over stone soothe the spirit and calm the mind. Calmas Design used a similar combination of materials in the adjacent sauna then turned to clear glass blocks to enclose the nurses’ station in the brightly lit hallway that leads to both spaces. The round glass enclosure is reflected by glass blocks inset into the curved opposing wall, creating a gentle flow from one area to the other. All the slate, stone and glass blocks were installed by California Masonry and Design. Creating a variety of textures, they underlie the natural theme of the entire concept. The backdrop to these rich textures is a warm palette, selected by Calmas Designs and expertly applied by Paramount Interiors to create an exquisite décor. It is a setting that signals to clients at First Glance that their needs have been taken into careful consideration. If First Glance Aesthetic Clinic could make only one promise, it would be to continuously strive for ongoing service excellence. It is a promise on which clients can depend, and one they know they can trust.

Celebrating ten years of renovation and innovation By Leigh Patterson
With over 110 exhibitors from across Canada featuring everything you need to design and create the kitchen, bathroom or home exterior of your dreams, the Manitoba Home Builders’ Association’s 10th annual Kitchen, Bath & Renovation (KBR) Show is the perfect place to turn your resolutions into reality. “If you are about to renovate, are in the middle of a renovation, or are in constant renovation like many of us, you’ll find your inspiration at this show,” says show manager Jan Currier. From January 14 - 16, 2011 at the Winnipeg Convention Centre, KBR will be pulling out all the stops to offer consumers all of the newest and the best ideas in design, décor and renovation projects. One of the biggest draws of the show will be celebrity guest designer Sarah Richardson, host of HGTV’s hugely popular “Sarah’s House”, and who recently launched her line of paint colours by PARA Paints. The Sarah Richardson Designer Palette will be distributed exclusively in Winnipeg by Western Paint. Richardson will share her infectious design savvy in two one-hour presentations – one on Friday evening and again on Saturday afternoon.
Learn how Richardson balances ‘save, splurge and common sense,’ and how she uses her signature approach of tips and tricks to solve design problems, so that you can transform any room in your home. Throughout the weekend local experts will be speaking to their craft and sharing their knowledge on topics such as kitchen and bath renovations, interior design, appliances, electronics, home furnishings, lifestyle products, living green and more. At the popular “Ask a Renovator” booth, RenoMarkTM certified renovators from the Manitoba Home Builders’ Association will be available to answer all of your questions. Appointments can be pre-booked online (www.kitchenandbathshow.com) until January 13, 2011, but walk-up appointments will be available on site as well. “Then bring in your plans, drawings, designs, even a sketch you’ve made on a napkin,” Currier says. “It’s a great opportunity to help answer the question, ‘where do I start?’”

Exciting Evolution When Marty and Sarah asked All Canadian Renovations (ACR) to help transform their bathroom and front entrance into a more modern design, little did project manager Marcel Verrier know that the renovations would also evolve, eventually encompassing all aspects of the home except
for the basement. But it was something that made sense to the homeowners, as they realized what a difference updating their décor would make to the look and feel of their 1980s split-level house.
“They originally called us in to renovate the bathroom and front entrance,” recalls Verrier. “As we were about to get started, they added more to the project.” In the end, ACR replaced the flooring and repainted the walls throughout the entire main and upper floors. The renovators also replaced the exterior shingles, fascia, soffits and eavestroughs. Because the homeowners are deaf mutes, they often had an interpreter with them during meetings with ACR. At other times, both parties communicated in writing. “We did, after a while, develop a good sense of what both Marty and Sarah were trying to tell us,” says Verrier. “We were able to communicate with them very well.” Both the homeowners and Verrier worked closely with ACR’s in-house designer. “That process helps to keep the project within budget,” he notes. “We found out what they were looking for, prepared a design, tweaked it and made changes until it was just what they wanted.” The homeowners’ first priority was to expand and dress up what was formerly a very plain bathroom on the main floor. An adjacent closet was removed and replaced with a large walk-in shower. Various sizes and dimensions of slate tile form an attractive backdrop. A
80 | STYLE MANITOBA | winter 2010
combination of fiddlesticks and larger tiles line the walls of the bathroom and shower, while a smaller square version covers the shower ceiling and floor. The floor of the bathroom is a vinyl plank that was then used throughout the house, including the bedrooms on the upper levels. “Not many people are going with carpet anymore,” notes Verrier. Only the front foyer features different flooring, a slate tile that ties in with the walls of the main bathroom. In the ensuite, however, large rectangular ceramic tile graces the wall and the skirt of the air tub. The riverstone accent flowing across the back wall is simply stunning. Completing the look is a vessel sink and faucets that come right out of the mirror. It is not surprising the ACR is regularly honoured with awards for its bathrooms and other renovation work. In fact, All Canadian will be participating in the 2011 Kitchen Bath & Renovation Show, giving hourly presentations once a day on some of the best approaches to renovating a home.
In this situation, ACR once again removed an adjacent hall closet and transformed the space into a walk-in shower with a 10-mm glass door and a rain showerhead. It was just what the homeowners wanted. “When there is existing space, we can really work with it,” notes Verrier, adding that, although walls were removed, no walls had to be moved in the entire project. In fact, in the living room, it wasn’t a question of moving or removing walls but of transforming an existing – but decidedly blank – wall. The result is a fabulous entertainment unit, incorporating recessed and glass shelving as well as a gas fireplace. Drawing from the white rectangular tile that surrounds the fireplace, ACR incorporated small strips of the same material along with two colours of glass mosaic tiles into the backsplash of the kitchen. “It’s important to create a flow between spaces,” notes Verrier, adding that the new kitchen cabinets are in the same style and stain as those in the bathroom. In fact, every element in the house now works perfectly together to create a pleasing, unified look. With this kind of result, it’s no wonder that Marty and Sarah concluded that it was better to renovate their entire house all at once.

More of Less By Christine Hanlon
Manitobans now have more options than ever for bringing minimalist design into their home. What started as a refreshing breath of fresh air for the kitchen and bathroom has now expanded to the bedroom and great room—all soon to be showcased in a fabulous two-storey showroom on Portage Avenue. “We’re creating a store unlike anything Winnipeg has ever seen,” says Artur Jasiakiewicz of M-Concept. The new showroom will include three fully functional kitchens featuring the distinctive Italian design and construction of Aster Cucine cabinetry. Using clean lines and a minimalist design, M-Concept introduces Manitoba’s homeowners to the best of European styling and functionality. Flat panel doors and concealed appliances create sleek uninterrupted lines. “It looks more like a furnished great room than a kitchen,” notes Artur.
The showroom will also feature bedroom suites, two walk-in closets and two complete bathrooms. Crafted in contemporary European style, Wetstyle baths, sinks and furniture are made in Montreal. The bold furniture comes in a wide selection of finishes, including various lacquers, as well as oak and walnut veneers. If the bathroom is a sanctuary from our complicated lives, the bedroom should be even more so. M-Concept has the perfect solution. Panels attached to the wall incorporate rails, organizers with drawers, shoe holders, a sliding door system and much more. “You can eliminate the clutter of furniture in the bedroom, giving it much cleaner lines,” says Artur.
these phenomenal designs could fit into their home. In fact, the store itself will be an apt reflection of what consumers can expect from M-Concept. The showroom will incorporate sofas, beds, entertainment units, German engineered hardwood and Floss Italian lighting, with all lines available for sale. A large projection screen will run continuous images of many of the other products M-Concept will be carrying. “We will be a modern destination boutique for all your home style décor needs,” says Artur. Whether renovating or building new, homeowners will be able to access all the essentials they need for a coordinated home design.
One of M-Concept’s recent projects involved transforming 37 feet of wall into 60 feet of hanging space, with top and bottom rails. The closet was both functionally fabulous and visually unique. “We can do complete renovations or simply install our products,” says Artur, adding that representatives from the company will be at the Kitchen Bath & Renovations Show to showcase superior products and services, all surprisingly within reach of Manitoba’s homeowners. And now with a new showroom slated to open in the new year, M-Concept will make it even easier for homeowners to visualize how

Turn the Heat On
The days may be getting colder but Krevco Lifestyles’ ‘gotta have’ products will be heating things up at this year’s Kitchen, Bath & Renovations Show. “We will be featuring our steam showers in the bathroom division,” says Krevco President Don Carson. “And we’ll have an exciting line-up of fireplaces as well.” Krevco Lifestyles is a true year-round ‘gotta have’ store, with everything customers need to turn a long winter into an opportunity to enjoy time at home. “Personally, I enjoy hot tubbing more in winter than summer,” says Carson. “And we deliver hot tubs year round. So you don’t have to wait until spring to come and see us.” Because Krevco manufactures jetted tubs in its own facility, it’s easy to get just the right product to fit your bathroom. Or why not add a steam shower? Complete with all the plumbing, it’s as simple as “plug and play.” Other easy solutions include Heat Saver portable heaters. Using infra-red technology to heat up to 1000 square feet of space, these attractive wooden cabinets can be moved from one room to another. And now homeowners can also turn to Krevco for a full line of gas, wood and electric fireplaces. Some of today’s contemporary gas units even allow switching between logs and a rock or glass base. Once that rec room in the basement is nice and warm, add a pool or poker table, Nautalis or Bowflex machine – or heat things up even more with an infra-red sauna. Summer or winter, it’s never been easier to create a complete ‘gotta have’ lifestyle!

Kitchen&Bath Innovative Solutions No more hunting through the entire fridge for that favourite snack while the cold air escapes! Maytag’s Ice2O® includes a fully extendable refrigerator drawer—at child-friendly height— with adjustable dividers and an organizer that provide easy access to the equivalent of five bags of groceries. Meanwhile, a glass floor in the main compartment allows homeowners to see the entire fresh food space at a glance. “It is also the most energy efficient four-door refrigerator because 80 percent of the fridge remains closed while you are taking out your frequently accessed foods,” notes Bryan Cripps, Appliance Manager for Dufresne. Maytag features that same combination of convenience and energy savings in its latest double oven range. The 2010 line has the largest upper oven in the industry. “The upper oven is accessed 85 percent of the time,” notes Cripps. “Now you can cook more while still realizing energy savings.” Still smaller than the lower one, the upper oven preheats 40 percent faster. The Ceran glass top also features a speed heat element to boil water more quickly. This fabulous range is accompanied by outstanding durability as evidenced by the shatterresistant cooktop. As for the refrigerator, superior door seals and hinges minimize cold air loss while standing the test of time. These Maytag innovations are only two of the many exciting appliances available at Dufresne’s six Manitoba locations.

Kitchen&Bath Putting on a Fresh Face
Updating to a cleaner contemporary look proved to be an easy and cost-effective process for these homeowners. “They didn’t want to go and rip up the whole kitchen because the boxes were structurally in great shape,” notes Sheri Anderson, owner of Nu-Life Kitchens with her husband Mark. Instead, the homeowners had the cabinets refaced, a process which involves removing door and drawer fronts and replacing them with new ones. Here, traditional maple doors were replaced by flat panel thermofoil doors with a raised texture called Wenge. A matching laminate material was applied to the sides and fronts of the frame. Sleek modern handles complete the look. Nu-Life Kitchens worked around the existing granite countertop that the homeowners wanted to keep. They removed the crown moulding, installed an under-cabinet light valance, and built a new cabinet to replace the open display shelving at the edge of the kitchen. “We can do modifications as well,” notes Anderson. The entire project was completed in three days, at half the cost of a new kitchen. “That translates into minimal disruption in your life,” says Anderson. Also convenient is the Nu-Life Kitchen’s showroom, where clients can come to see whole kitchen displays as well as door and countertop samples in a wide variety of styles and colours.

Kitchen&Bath Fashion Forward
The opaque Meadowood Grey stain of the maple cabinetry lends a polished look to the kitchen in this Gino’s display home at 15 Huntersbrook in Bridgwater Forest. “While darker cabinetry has been popular during the last few years, Gino Homes wanted to showcase what’s coming up in the industry,” says Gino Vadacchino, Sales/ Marketing Manager for Norcraft Cabinetry. Norcraft’s designer worked closely with the builder to create a kitchen with elegant clean lines punctuated by dramatic finishes and features. A sleek Shaker door style is finished with a simple top and bottom treatment and stainless steel bar pulls. Staggered and stepped cabinets create interest while accentuating the high ceilings of the home. The backsplash is a striking interwoven brick pattern with glass tiles that pulls together the tone of the cabinets with colours used throughout the house. A solid surface countertop features an undermount sink while the island has a slide-in range. Everything flows impeccably. Graced with a glass canopy, the chimney-style hood over the island preserves the airy feeling of the space. In fact, the island was placed strategically to maximize the view of the lake from the Great room. “Kitchen designs have to take into account the views and the flow of people,” says Vadacchino. Made for entertaining, the kitchen also includes a bar with convenient access to both great room and kitchen.
Range of Options
The sleek style of this slide-in range from KitchenAid is only one of many fabulous features. “It gives you that built-in look,” confirms Curtis Penner of Coast Wholesale Appliances. He adds that unlike many slide-ins that have exposed sides, the finished side panels of this unit also make it suitable for end-of-counter installation. Three of the elements are expandable, and all four feature a melt-and-hold simmer setting. “You can maintain a really low temperature,” notes Penner. The oven, meanwhile, offers the option of regular bake and broil or true convection baking, roasting and broiling. An “easy” convection feature allows the cook to enter a regular temperature setting, which is then converted to convection temperature and time. Dehydration and bread proofing modes are also a few of the options. And with a built-in temperature probe, turning out that perfect roast has never been easier. Located below the oven, the convenient warming drawer offers high, medium and low settings. All these options are accompanied by the reliability and durability long associated with the KitchenAid brand. “Their product line has really expanded over the years,” adds Penner. Homeowners can now turn to KitchenAid for everything from built-in wall ovens to gas, electric, induction and dual fuel cooktops, icemakers and wine coolers, dishwashers and dish drawers, plus a wide variety of ventilation options and countertop appliances. winter 2010 | STYLE MANITOBA | 87
Kitchen&Bath Timeless Design
Timeless design elements keep this kitchen as current and fresh as when it was created by Kitchen Craft four years ago. The clean lines of the Summit door style and wood veneer bulkhead coordinate with the stainless steel backsplash and appliances, while brushed nickel bar pulls complement the overall design. The sleek hardware comes in a variety of sizes. “This gives you the desired flexibility,” notes Toni Ostroman, Design Consultant at Kitchen Craft. She adds that the company worked closely with custombuilder Maric Homes to ensure a design that is unique and exciting. Distinguishing features include a raised toe-kick with stainless steel bar. Maple angled pantries and a curvilinear island, both in a charcoal stain, contrast with the cherry Tuscan cabinetry. “It adds visual interest to the kitchen without detracting from the overall seamless style,” says Ostroman. The simple lines of the Summit door style continue to be very popular with homeowners, who will be glad to see Kitchen Craft featured at the Kitchen, Bath and Renovation Show once again. Contemporary without being trendy, the Summit is available in various combinations of wood species and stain colours, each with a unique look. Offering 50 door styles, Kitchen Craft is continuously developing new door styles and stain colours— cappuccino and espresso are now available on cherry— with a commitment to timeless style. “Attention to detail and careful consideration of design will result in a kitchen you will love for years to come,” notes Ostroman.

Kitchen&Bath Farmhouse Fabulous
The centre of so much activity in the kitchen, the sink deserves to look as great as everything else. Combining bold angles and curves, this Farmhouse sink from Julien’s Classic collection more than fits the bill. “It has a brushed finish that matches an appliance finish,” notes Astrid Bergstrom, Showroom Manager at Robinson Bath Centre. At the same time, the tilt drawer handle matches with the door pulls of today’s popular stainless steel appliances. The Farmhouse Classic is constructed from 16-gauge steel. “That’s about 25 percent thicker than the standard 18-gauge,” explains Bergstrom, adding that the composition is also different. “The more nickel in the stainless steel, the less it scratches.” All Julien stainless steel sinks are handcrafted in Quebec from one sheet of metal. The 60-year-old Canadian company now uses 80 percent recycled stainless steel. The Farmhouse Classic comes in three different sizes as well as in a model with an optional worktop on the back to store spatulas, knives and other kitchen tools. Custom-fitted cutting boards, colanders and grids are also available. It is only one of Julien’s six collections of stainless steel kitchen sinks. The company also offers a Sink à la Carte program. Says Bergstrom: “If you have something you want and you can’t get it in a catalogue, they will make it for you.”
Finely Tailored Elegance
Fine finishing details lend this kitchen a classic elegance. A painted cashmere finish is accented with an antiquing treatment on all of the cabinetry, while the applied mouldings on the five-piece door and drawer fronts complement the raised panel of the solid maple cabinet fronts. Stacked crown moulding and intricate wrought iron handles complete the tailored look. A built-in wall oven, microwave and dishwasher contribute to the seamless appeal of the cabinetry while maximizing storage space. In total, there are five banks of deep pot and pan drawers, including two in the island. Kitchens Plus added the island for the homeowners, who also use it as an informal eating area. “We work closely with clients so we can give them exactly what they want,” says Dorothy Janzen, co-owner of Kitchens Plus with her husband Dennis. This renovation included a double undermount sink installed in the Victoria quartz countertops. The backsplash, which includes the deck of the bay window, is done in ceramic tile. Kitchens Plus also took care of major electrical upgrades in the kitchen, including potlights in the valance over the window and the xenon under-cabinet task lighting. Other renovations included a built-in china cabinet (not pictured) with lighting, glass shelves, and staggered depths to accommodate the flow of the island. It takes particular attention to detail to create such a finely finished design. winter 2010 | STYLE MANITOBA | 89

Authentic Appeal By Christine Hanlon
The wide planks of this modern handscraped floor marry the authentic look of hardwood with the durability of a laminate. “It’s a very sophisticated look,” says Heidi Streu of The Floor Show, “easy on the eyes and easy to live with.” Realistic texture, micro-bevelled edges, and a matte finish further contribute to the illusion of hardwood in this recent showhome The Floor Show completed. Made-to-measure from the Floor Show’s wide selection of carpet, the area rug completes the look of the room. Streu notes that over the past few years there have been huge changes in the selection and quality of laminate products. “Things we saw on the market just two years ago have already been surpassed,” she explains. Laminate planks are now available in a variety of widths as well as longer lengths that create drama in large, open spaces. Exceedingly durable and low maintenance, laminates are ideal for active households. People can have the look they want without worrying that a particular wood species will be too soft for their lifestyle. And laminates are also very affordable. “A particular look in laminate is going to be less expensive than that same look in a prefinished hardwood,” says Streu. The Floor Show has a wide variety of laminate products, in all different styles, finishes and price points. Laminates are only one of the many product categories on display in the extensive showroom. A complete flooring provider, The Floor Show continues to meet and exceed the flooring and finishing needs of all aspects of the Manitoba market. Builders, architects, designers and discerning homeowners rely on the company to deliver a consistent market-leading level of selection, quality and service. Products are sourced not only to provide the broadest range of options, but also to offer choices that are well beyond the ordinary. A fully equipped design centre, the Floor Show also makes it easy for builders and homeowners alike to coordinate the various finishes and materials used in a home. The relaxed atmosphere, convenient colour boards and roomy tables create an ideal setting for exploring ideas and fine-tuning designs.

design&decor Naturally Beautiful
The developers of South Pointe describe the community as “a seamless blend of natural beauty and modern living.” This is an equally apt description of the Parkhill display home and its ability to capitalize on the opportunities offered by the development. Located at 64 Brookstone on a lot that borders onto South Pointe’s prairie wetland, this exciting three-bedroom bungalow takes full advantage of the attractive surroundings. In the oversized kitchen, the granite island is fully equipped for the home chef while a large eating area affords a stunning vista of the exterior wetlands. The view extends even further, with garden doors that lead to a covered deck. Visitors to the Fall Parade of Homes also appreciated the generous foyer with a two-sided fireplace that is shared with the great room. The strategically placed ribbon fireplace is in itself a testament to Parkhill’s dedication to marrying old world craftsmanship and modern building savvy. But the proof does not stop there. Complete with games area, media area, two bedrooms and a three-piece bathroom, the walkout lower level is a fully finished living space that extends possibilities for entertaining and relaxation while maximizing the view of the pond and creek beyond. Both luxurious and functional, this spectacular home takes advantage of every square foot to combine practicality with superior finishes and details.

design&decor Clearly Transitional
Enclosing the deck while maximizing the view, a stainless steel railing and glass panels inject a subtle modern element without detracting from the warm materials and colours of the home. “Our materials are perfectly suited to the outdoors,” notes Aleem Khan, Executive Sales Director at SSG Notion, a division of AluMen. Used in the harshest environments—such as for the railing of ocean liners—the stainless steel alloy will never rust or tarnish. Available in a brushed or polished finish, the stainless steel needs no coating. Stronger and heavier than aluminum, it combines the look of chrome with the durability of steel. This makes it ideal not only for railings, but also for staircases, both inside and out. In fact, SSG is well known for its ability to replace closed spaces and wooden railings with modern sculptural staircases. “We can even remove walls to open up the space if necessary,” notes Khan. SSG uses only tempered glass ¼ to 5/8 inches thick, and round or square stainless steel tubing available in sizes of ½ to 10 inches in diameter. Both are sourced locally, while the attachment hardware is imported from Europe. “Craftsmen in our shop cut the hardware to create custom solutions for any situation,” says Khan. SSG takes on projects of all sizes, from small partitions and doors to grand staircases and commercial applications.
Dazzling Designs
Contemporary light fixtures from Schonbek’s Geometrix line are a unique and stunning way to add sparkle to any décor. In this bathroom, a dense, box-shaped concentration of small crystals gives the Refrax fixture its dazzling prismatic effect. With 12 bold styles and 50 colours, the Geometrix family has something for everyone. “There are even small pendants that are perfect for a powder room,” notes Alison Demaré, Showroom Manager of Robinson Lighting. The unique use of the small facetted crystals blended together to form bold shapes in stunning colour combinations makes Geometrix a designer’s dream. Each fixture is available both in clear STRASS and SPECTRA Swarovski crystal with most also available in a wide array of colours, including such exotic hues as travertine, moondust and brandywine. “By mixing different colours of crystal within the geometric shapes, Schonbek has created a one-of-a-kind experience that will make a bold statement in any residential or commercial setting,” says Demaré. Flush to the ceiling, wall-mounted, or suspended, each fixture has a different application and impact. Many styles are suspended on aircraft cable to create a floating effect. “They’re stunning pieces,” says Demaré, adding that Schonbek also offers an extensive selection of traditional chandeliers. “Crystal is timeless.” Proud to offer this level of quality, Robinson Lighting has the longest-standing relationship with Schonbek of any supplier in Canada. winter 2010 | STYLE MANITOBA | 93

design&decor A Passion for Flooring
For the team at The Heartland Wood & Cork Floor Company, providing homeowners with the best possible floor is more than a job. It’s a passion. That said, when Heartland’s Paul Friesen selects a product, he looks beyond the price and the ‘look’ of a line. Over the years, he has found that companies that provide the best flooring are often family-owned businesses whose members share the same passion for their work as he does. “I think it comes from growing up in a family business myself,” says Friesen. “I’m attracted to suppliers that have a similar family ownership attitude. I was very intrigued by Hakwood when I discovered it a couple years ago, but it was after meeting with Mark Hak, the owner of Hakwood, that I knew the product would be a great fit for Heartland. It was obvious Mark and his team are passionate about this impressive product.” It is not difficult to see that this hardwood does indeed look impressive. Hakwood produces floors that that feel and look like solid board floors with all the benefits of engineered flooring. But the quality of this product extends far beyond the surface. “Hakwood doesn’t just meet the standards; they have raised the bar with the unique properties of their prefinished engineered hardwood flooring,” says Friesen. “Thanks to their manufacturing expertise, swelling, twisting, and shrinking are a fear of the past, allowing the desired wide width options of seven inches and nine inches, and lengths from five feet to eight feet.” Two thicknesses are available. The ¾-inch product has a 6mm (¼ inch) solid hardwood top layer and 14mm water resistant plywood back layer providing dimensional stability. “With the ¼-inch top layer you can refinish as necessary in the future. You are not just buying a look. You are buying a floor with substance,” notes Friesen. “This product is completely a la carte,” he adds. With a variety of species and custom collections, Hakwood offers unique colours, textures and finish options allowing for endless possibilities. Hakwood may also be purchased unfinished to create a truly personalized site- finished floor. “This is a product for people who like to have it done right –no compromise,” says Friesen. “And knowing what I do about wood flooring, it is the only product I’d put in my dream home. Now, if I only had the time to build it......” Please note: This is the accurate rendition of the incorrect text mistakenly published in the last issue of Style Manitoba. In conversation with Paul Friesen, the writer incorrectly assumed that he had been to Holland to visit Mark Hak. In fact, Friesen has never visited the Netherlands; it was Hak who came to Winnipeg.

design&decor Modern Marvel
With its linear horizontal design and sleek selftrim style, the newest electric fireplace from Dimplex is a striking addition to any modern setting. “It has a very contemporary feel,” agrees Helen Peters of Classic Fireplaces. The decorative multi-coloured pieces of glass are silvered on one side to reflect light randomly for a dramatic effect. Only seven inches deep, the entire unit features a built-in recessed construction suitable for a variety of spaces. Compared to other fuels, versatile Dimplex electric fires need no venting so they are easy to install anywhere in a room. “You just plug it into a regular socket,” Peters points out. “There is no special wiring required.” Equipped with a remote control, the fire can be started at the touch of a button. The flames can be used independently of the 2KW fan heater, or together. This linear design is only one of many options from Dimplex. The popular Opti-Myst features the most realistic effect ever seen in an electric fire. Using state-of-the-art technology, a fine mist is illuminated to create the illusion of flames and smoke. “We have it on display in our showroom,” says Peters. In business for 28 years, Classic Fireplaces supplies and installs a wide variety of electric, gas, and wood-burning fireplaces, as well as stoves, outdoor products, water features, fountains, barbecues and all types of fireplace and barbecue accessories.
Contemporary Crystal

Columns of crystal strands suspended through oversized shades create a stunning statement in the great room of the HSC Lottery House. “Crystal can add a very dramatic element to a more transitional or contemporary space,” says Simon Simkin, President of Superlite. Rather than using one traditional tiered and multi-armed chandelier, these fixtures combine classically rich elements with a contemporary design. “This particular size of chandelier would be for a higher two-storey ceiling,” notes Simkin, adding that the fixture can also be flush mounted for application in a space such as a 14-foot foyer. With crystal becoming increasingly popular, homeowners are using light fixtures to add sparkle in virtually every room in the house. For instance, the multi-faceted look of crystal is perfect for making a statement in a powder room or transforming a bedroom into a special space. Here, Maric Homes relied on Superlite to provide contemporary fixtures throughout this home, including the kitchen where crystals shine inside graceful glass pendants in a low-voltage application. In the great room, the fabric of the shade provides relief to the glitter of the crystal, with the chrome adding another contemporary note. “It ends up being a very nice marriage of materials,” says Simkin. Combining crystal with materials such as organza, mylar and brushed nickel opens virtually limitless opportunities for designers to create contemporary motifs.
