the

agenda Welcome to the winter edition of Style Manitoba. Along with our regular coverage on homes and lifestyles, we are proud to feature Manitoba’s own Adam Beach and his new series, Arctic Air, as our cover story. Just as we were wrapping up this issue, a heavy snowfall arrived, and it looks like the white stuff is here to stay. I’ve come to think of it as “holiday ambiance,” as without snow, it’s hard to get in the spirit of the season. Speaking of which, our winter edition offers some great gift giving ideas, perfectly timed with the last month of shopping before the big day.

Waking up on Christmas morning is one of the most exciting times in a child’s life, particularly for the younger ones who still believe in jolly old St Nick. And Christmas Eve is probably the only night of the year that small children go to bed willingly, although they struggle to stay awake, hoping to catch a glimpse of the chubby guy in the red suit and snow white beard as he comes to lay their presents under the tree.

pressure of cooking that big turkey dinner, last minute gift wrapping, etc. Yet, like clockwork, we do it every year. Still, there’s magic in the yuletide season – it brings families together to spend quality time with one another - to eat, drink and be merry. Having children around for Christmas

makes it all the more joyful. Aside from the glittering tree, the tinsel and the gifts, it truly is the most wonderful time of the year. Happy holidays!

My holiday joy Brynn, Mielah & Zoe

Come morning, nothing compares to that look of utter joy on their little faces as they clamour around the tree and discover all the gifts beneath it. And they never fail to check if Santa and his reindeer ate the cookies and carrots left out for them the night before. Parents, be warned: in a child’s mind, uneaten cookies sow the first seeds of doubt as to Santa’s very existence. Many adults also get pumped about Christmas, even though it often brings a measure of holiday stress, usually associated with too much mall time, large extended family gatherings, the

Your

Thoughts What a big fat beautiful magazine! The fall issue of Style Manitoba was outstanding! Great coverage on home designs, showhomes and neighbourhoods, plus lots of other interesting stuff. Style Manitoba is virtually a catalogue of ideas for anyone who’s interested in buying a new home or renovating an existing one. I’ll be looking forward to the next issue. Danielle Klassen, Winnipeg Stunning home designs, hot cars, great entertainment coverage and a nice dash of food, fashion, health and beauty – what more could a reader ask for? It’s hard to believe Style Manitoba is local – the format speaks of a cosmopolitan centre. I read through the fall issue when in town on business. Congrats on putting out such a great publication! Bert Salinger, Toronto I can hardly wait until all the construction is done in downtown Winnipeg. Upon reading through Kelly Gray’s article “An Unfolding Vision,” I found myself excited to see the completion of all the projects discussed. Winnipeg will surely become a destination city if all goes as planned. Thanks for the insightful coverage. Jeremy Kingswood, Winnipeg Wow - there sure are some great sources for furniture and décor items in Winnipeg today compared to years ago. I read about Interior Illusions reopening in a new location two issues ago, and remembered to stop in at the store after the fall issue came out. What a plethora of unique furnishings and home décor products! Anyone who hasn’t visited this wonderful store is missing out, particularly those seeking the latest looks. Well worth a look see! Barbara Hall, Winnipeg My wife and I were happy to see that new dental and foot care clinics will be opening to serve the East St Paul / Pritchard Farm Properties / Birds Hill area, as there is truly a need for these types of service in this region. Strong design, dramatic impact Style and function blend seamlessly in stunning showhome By Leigh Patterson Photography: Michael Roberts

Glamour and versatility define this 2,780 square foot, two-story showhome located in Winnipeg’s South Pointe development. Built by Hilton Homes, the house is like a multifaceted jewel: viewed from different angles, many possibilities are revealed. A flexible layout means this could easily be a home for a couple of busy executives or an extended family of seven. “As with all of our homes, if you strip everything away, you are left with a solid plan that will work for the people that live here,” notes Spencer Curtis of Hilton Homes. The builder’s dedication to giving customers a great product and a great experience is apparent from this home’s thoughtful “Kingswood” floor plan through to the interior design features inspired by the Art Deco era. “Our designer, Carolyn Giese, did a remarkable job of adding sizzling design features to this great plan,” Curtis notes. This bold interior theme starts at the front foyer, where ceilings soar to 18 feet high and a striking custom patterned floor lends instant style. The combination of gleaming white porcelain tile and black marble inlay by Elite Floors also provides continuity to the main floor by extending into the kitchen and dining areas beyond. Viewed from the foyer is a specially designed glassed-in staircase – a stunning central feature that adds instant drama at the entrance without detracting from the open home concept. The great room – the heart of the home – showcases Hilton Homes’ highest standards of craftsmanship. Here, warm-toned hardwood floors are the perfect counterpoint to the dramatic black marble tile wall around the gas

Bold window treatments inject visual warmth while framing the expanse of JELD-WEN windows in the great room and adjacent kitchen. Featuring a surround tiled in black marble, a stunning fireplace from Alsip’s makes a strong statement in the main floor great room.

The glassed-in architectural staircase to the second floor stays true to the open concept floor plan. winter 2012 | STYLE MANITOBA | 7

equipped with task lighting to highlight the gourmet-quality gas range below.

A bank of huge JELD-WEN windows extends from the great room to the eat-in kitchen, allowing natural light to flood the open, airy space. Selected as the 2012 “Energy Star” Manufacturer of the Year, JELD-WEN is renowned for combining style, energy efficiency and performance in their products. Elegant fabric bulkheads and window treatments by Creative Window Coverings complete the look.

“It was the first time we used this granite in one of our homes and we were excited to use it,” Curtis says. The black stone granite with shimmering blue streaks is paired with a glass and granite tile backsplash for extra pizzazz.

Day and night, the fully equipped eat-in kitchen literally gleams. This is due in part to the gorgeous tools and accessories, including built-in stainless steel appliances and Kohler faucets gracing the undermount sink on the island and on the main counter. A great deal of thought has gone into the lighting requirements of this room, too. Pot lights and under-cabinet lighting illuminate task areas and provide general ambient light, while elegant pendant lights from Super-Lite Lighting bring the focus down to the centre island. Even a chimney-style hood fan comes

In keeping with a commitment to using modern building materials, both the island and counter areas are topped with “Volga blue” granite.

Abundant storage is housed by beautiful cabinets featuring a New Haven door style in a light cream colour consistent with the rest of the home’s décor. Full extension dovetail drawers keep utensils out of sight but within easy reach, while pot drawers on both sides of the stove provide an added measure of convenience. One of the hallmarks of a Hilton Home is a flexible layout, and this home is no exception. A formal dining room located just off of the kitchen is large enough to allow for plenty of furniture configuration options. The same holds true for the main floor den with full bathroom – a unique feature that also allows it to function as a home office or even as a guest bedroom.

A second level loft is a versatile space, perfect as a family room, playroom or entertainment area. “This home certainly has a multitude of options and captures the glam but ultimately for us it’s about how it will work for you everyday,” Curtis says. This philosophy is as fully expressed on the second level as it is on the first. Super plush carpeting on the architectural staircase leads up to the second floor and a large glassed-in loft area. Ideal as a play room, family room or entertainment area, the loft

possibilities that exist for storage, a bathroom, another bedroom, or even a theatre room.

Rewarded indeed. Details abound in this sanctuary, which includes a walk-in closet and well-appointed ensuite with corner Jacuzzi tub, home audio system, and tile accent border around the mirror. Large porcelain tiles in the glassed-in shower and on the floor give the ensuite a clean, cohesive feel. Once again, lighting is a key consideration, with pendant lights above the dual sinks and pot lights above the tub and in the shower.

“There’s no bulkheads to worry about and I-joists are standard,” Curtis says.

Rounding out this spacious home is a partially finished basement. Decked out for informal entertaining, the space includes a bar area complete with dishwasher and sink. The rest of the space is framed out so one can visualize the

As a builder, Hilton Homes is committed to quality inside and out, and to keeping home ownership as maintenance-free as possible for their customers. That’s why the company chose the “CertainTeed” siding and stone façade also installed by Alsip’s. Like every home built by Hilton Homes, this residence exceeds expectations at every level. It’s the reason why more people are relying on Hilton Homes to build the homes that complement their life…and style.

A four-piece bathroom serving this floor has its own panache, thanks to the marble countertop accented by the same glass/marble tile backsplash found in the kitchen. A one-piece tub surround keeps this busy area simple and low maintenance. The luxurious 17’ X 14’ master bedroom is fully carpeted, with a coffered ceiling that adds visual interest. Richly textured, gold-toned wallpaper effectively creates a feature wall. “When we designed the master, we did so with the homeowners in mind,” Curtis says.

There is little doubt among the driving public that Mercedes Benz cars have taken the motoring experience to a fresh level. Simply, Mercedes Benz offers a more refined style, more expansive list of amenities, and the very best in automotive engineering. This is where 4MATIC™ enters the picture. 4MATIC™ is Mercedes Benz’s permanent all-wheel drive system. This system delivers optimal traction regardless of road conditions and is available in all levels of the manufacturer’s product line. “4MATIC™ incorporates our 4-wheel Electronic Traction System (4ETS), monitoring each wheel for slippage and individually braking wheels to maintain the balance of power,” says Mercedes Benz Winnipeg sales specialist Justin Livingstone. “By continuously ensuring that power is transferred to the wheels with grip, 4MATIC™ keeps you going, even if only one wheel has traction.” According to Justin, the engineering of the system is just one of the things that sets Mercedes Benz cars apart from the competition. “4MATIC™ is permanent active all wheel drive. Other car companies have attempted to achieve the same ends by offering a reactive system. Ours was the originator and represents a more sophisticated approach that is more effective in all conditions.” The beauty of 4MATIC™ is that as you drive, sensors are examining how the wheels are addressing the road surface. Should one wheel slip and spin, systems accurately brake the spinning wheel and compensate with torque distribution where it’s needed. Stability and control are the result. This means winter roads with partial ice and snow covering are less hazardous, and wet

cobblestones are less likely to create dangerous skids. The 4MATIC™ system was created back in 1986 for the E Class series of saloon cars and Estate Wagons. Today’s version is the fourth generation of this key safety and comfort feature. “No one has anything that comes close to the abilities of Mercedes 4MATIC™ which has been specifically designed to interface with our amazing 7GTronic 7 speed automatic transmission,” says Justin, who notes that the 4MATIC™ system offers a planetary type center differential that’s integrated with the transmission casing. In the case of cornering, a multi-plate breakaway clutch allows the front wheels to rotate faster than the rear wheels promoting better turn in to optimize handling. At Mercedes, all 4MATIC™ cars incorporate a 45:55 front/rear torque split, a ratio that has been found to be the most effective for stability and traction. “With these cars Mercedes has sought to create sporty, yet predictable handling under all kinds of road conditions,” says Justin. More, 4MATIC™ was designed to be as light as possible. In fact, the system that was created entirely in-house, utilizing more than 100 years of automotive engineering history, weighs in at only 75 kilograms. “This light weight is a positive attribute when it comes to fuel economy. We have reduced the number of moving parts and made the complete package tougher than ever, a factor in making the entire transmission system the most reliable and smoothest on the market. Our customers expect nothing less.”

manufacturer for products that are at the leading edge of design and engineering. Here he points to safety and drivability, where Mercedes Benz cars actually seek to learn about the driver and their habits through an interface of sensors and complex proprietary software. For example, as many as 70 data points focus on delivering the most comfortable behind-the-wheel experience possible while monitoring subtle driving activities to determine the attentiveness of the operator. “For the first 20 minutes of a drive, the sensors examine how a driver sits and uses the pedals and instruments. If there are changes in these patterns over the course of a long drive, the car may offer an alarm to warn about something such as driver fatigue,” he says, adding that other innovations such as Advanced Driving Assist will help keep cars in the proper lane, eliminate blind spots and even use radar in combination with cruise control to further enhance safety. The 4MATIC™ advantage certainly adds to safety, but Mercedes Benz Winnipeg takes it a step further by offering a winter driving school to assist its customers with safety and proper driving technique. “The combination of things like 4MATIC™ alongside electronic stability control, the eleven standard airbags as well as hands on training at the track is a total approach that is helping to keep our customers safer,” he says, concluding that customers show their appreciation of Mercedes’ safety and attention to engineering detail every time they return to buy a new sedan, wagon or SUV, a fact that has made Mercedes Benz Winnipeg a leader in the city’s luxury car market.

According to Livingstone, the fact that Mercedes is such a strong innovator means customers can look to the

Community Focus By Kelly Gray Greg Michie and his team are working to make a difference in East St. Paul. Michie is a leading real estate professional who made a decision to purchase and develop a fouracre site at 3014 Henderson Highway near Hoddinott Road. What they created was a much-needed professional centre for growing communities such as Pritchard Farm Properties and Birds Hill, not to mention nearby North and West Kildonan. Michie, whose real estate business is evenly divided between city and country listings, saw the benefits of locating a mile from the Perimeter Hwy adjacent to what is easily the most affluent of Winnipeg’s suburban bedroom communities. In Phase I of the Highland Park Professional Centre development, Michie sited his offices in the 6,000 square foot boutique style building that closely mirrors the area’s modern upscale housing approach. Next door he leased additional space to lawyers

16 | STYLE MANITOBA | winter 2012

Olschewski Feuer Davie, who opened their Pritchard Farm Family Law Centre to address a need in the community for a full service legal office. Finishing off the project was East St. Paul Physiotherapy, a service that has proven to be highly attractive to the more than 80,000 residents of the nearby communities. “We have a lot of experience in helping people find homes in this area and could see that while the residential aspect was second to none, there was a missing component among professional services,” says Michie, noting that people were having to drive from East St. Paul, West St. Paul, St. Andrews, Springfield and St. Clements into the city to meet with lawyers, doctors and other professionals. “We also knew that many of those professionals lived nearby in locations such as Pritchard Farm Properties. The fit was ideal.” That was a couple of years ago. With the first phase under their belts, The Greg Michie Team started to market the concept to members of the medical community. According to Greg, the response was not surprising. His team of eight licensed Realtors and four administrative assistants received solid interest from doctors as well as the community. In fact, as much as 10 months before completion of Phase II, the phones in Michie’s offices were ringing off the hook with local residents inquiring about the new medical centre and when it would open.

The Pritchard Farm Health Centre opened this past June to much fanfare. Under the leadership of Dr. Chris Fotti and Dr. Mark Boroditsky, the facility features nine doctors (eight family physicians and one doctor specializing in internal medicine, auto-immune disorders and cosmetic procedures). In addition to the physiotherapy practice that opened in Phase I, the facility now offers a diagnostic imaging centre complete with digital X-ray. There is even a pharmacy and medical lab on-site. “I live in East St. Paul and appreciate the quick commute between work and home,” says Dr. Fotti. “This is the only place north of the city to offer this kind of complete one-stop-shop medical facility. This means I am able to have my patients receive diagnostic and treatment support often without having to drive into appointments in Winnipeg. This represents a real time saving, as well as better care for our patients.” Kwanyee Leong agrees. Leong operates the on-site East St. Paul Pharmacy that is next door to Fotti’s offices. She suggests that by having doctors so close at hand, she is able to offer a more consultative approach when she dispenses medicines. Michie is impressed with the level of service the pharmacy provides and the fact that their prices are competitive if not lower than most of the large pharmacy chains.

A pharmacist for more than 25 years, Leong is also experienced enough to make many of the medicinal products prescribed by Dr. Patenaude at her specialty practice, The Skin Rhum MD, where she offers the very latest techniques and approaches that are making this clinic a leading source for new line ‘CosMedic’ treatments in Manitoba and Western Canada.

centre. He reports that each day the site sees as many as 450 cars parked in spaces in front of the professional centre’s businesses. As well, traffic in the area between three major arteries stands above 65,000 cars each day. Median income in the area is well above the Winnipeg average, with Pritchard Farm Properties holding a collective average income twice that of the nearby city.

Describing the Skin Rhum MD, clinic manager Carris Somogyi notes that many of the procedures on offer are largely unique in the Winnipeg area. For example, the cosmetic clinic offers procedures such as laser resurfacing, non-invasive liposuction, and cell fill. There is also a vein clinic, in addition to a wide range of other available treatments.

“These aspects all bode well for any business locating in the area. However, we are targeting Highland Park in a specific way that will build on the footprint we have already established. For example, we believe a spa would be a good fit that would work alongside physiotherapy and the Skin Rhum MD. We also believe a dental centre or optometrist would be excellent, and would work to create even more traffic with patients moving between the treatment centres.”

“Having the Skin Rhum on site is all part of the full service approach we are developing here,” says Dr. Fotti, who points out that the professional centre even offers a walk-in clinic that doctors run three evenings a week (he expects these hours to increase as traffic grows). With this full service concept in motion, Michie and his staff are now working at completing another piece in the puzzle with Phase III. Greg comments that interest is strong, given the positive market attributes of the

close enough to go home for lunch if I want. The centre is also surrounded by a lovely natural setting that adds to the total package, making the decision to locate in East St. Paul a lifestyle as well as business decision.” Greg Michie and his team invite interested professionals to visit www.gregmichie.com for more information on Highland Park Professional Centre.

Concluding, Dr. Fotti puts the centre into perspective. He suggests that for him it’s about creating a work / life balance where he spends less time driving to the office, thanks to the close proximity of Highland Park Professional Centre to his residence. “This means my office time is more effective and I can see more patients while still being

Cocktail? The Apple Royale is a Crown Royal-spiked shake of cider, muddled ginger, and syrup crowned with foamy egg white and cinnamon-dusted apple slice. Equally fanciful is the Formidable Fig’s lyrical play of rye, Grand Marnier, muddled fig, orange, lime, and nutty Orgeat syrup. Small dishes? Turkish Meze includes delights like Hummus, Almond Studded Dates, and a provocative “Toenail of a Dog.” Most popular? Patliçan Yogürtlü. Roasted eggplant in olive oil, garlic, paprika, and oregano gets a cool yogurt drizzle. Spoon it on grilled Naan. Yum! Fresh apricots are a must – filled with dense cream cheese and finished with crunchy walnut. Charcuterie comes classic and reinterpreted. For sweet ‘n’ smoky munching, get sautéed Farmer’s Sausage and Apple on baguette. Tajine, slow-cookery in earthenware, dominates mains. Exotic Halal Manitoba Lamb stews vegetables, fruit and meat with savoury spice. Couscous and creamy potato mash accompany. Add-ons are irresistible. Mushrooms dressed in olive oil and herbs add earthy flavour. Wine: the Red, a French Claude Val varietal, is an easy-going gulp of dark fruit; and refreshing is the white, an oaky Saradosal Chardonnay from Spain’s Navarra region. Arkadash pastry chef ’s “genius” designation by our server certainly delivers: A special, Chocolate Tart for Two, layers crème brulee banana, baklava, milk, white and dark chocolates, and is framed by hot fudge, kiwi coulis, and pecans. Fitted with a golden sphere of cottony spun sugar, this sweet is indeed miraculous.

Perfect new locale for Mexican La Bamba’s from Saskatoon? You betcha-ditos - back in 2007. The vision? Flavourful, traditional and homemade Mexican meals. And just like the song the restaurant’s name evokes ... it was a hit! In 2010, La Bamba #2 opened at Confusion Corner. Then #3 and #4 sprung up on Portage and Corydon. Corydon is a perfect location for La Bamba - set into the avenue’s stretch of fashionable shops, cafés, and fellow restaurants. Mexican tunes pipe out onto the outdoor patio, the interior embraces you with orange and cherry wood, folky art bejewels the walls, the aroma of tortillas and chillies hang in the air ... the Mexican mood is set! Tequila! One-of-a-kind Hornitos Reposado perks the senses with jolts of wood and pear and bright lime suck. And a salted glass of Negra Modelo lager quenches with effervescence and delicate sweetness. Appetizers of vegetarian Picaditas and chicken Gorditas are found in Mexican markets in tasty abundance. La Bamba’s does not disappoint. These two trios of corncake-itas hold a variety of meat, veggie, cheese, and sauce toppings. Gorditas make a fat little corn sandwich of it all, but both come with guacamole, pickles, and fresh salsa. A husky Mexican pop, Jarrito’s Tamarind, fizzes and cools. Alambre Chipotle Tacos are a decadent combination of shredded steak and bacon tempered with onion, cheese, and smoky chipotle sauce. We fill our corn tortillas with the sumptuous stuff, then layer on Mexican rice and smooth refried beans. Hint: request more tortillas - stretch out the deliciousness! Mexican wine chases it down. L.A. CETTO, Mexico’s largest winery, offers juicy Cabernet Sauvignon bursting with ruddy fruits. And who can resist Nachos? Bamba Nachos are a masterpiece - a hefty layer of sliced steak, dense corn chips, and all the usual suspects. A fine dusting of goat cheese tops. Cream drizzle sends it all right over the edge. A classic Cuba Libre of rum, coke, and lime couldn’t find a finer taste match than these nachos. For dessert, Flan is a dream: dense and buttery. And handmade tequila ice cream that’s flavoured mango and strawberry is a pure joy sprouting fresh mint.

Trust What They Do Before You Trust What They Say Tips from Dr. Darek Dawda of DAVDA Psychology* By Mathilda Waters

According to our expert on well-being, Dr. Darek Dawda of DAVDA Psychology, trust is all about congruence between words and actions. MW: My friend found out that her husband cheated on her. This happened one year ago, and since then, her husband has been faithful. Nonetheless, she continues having difficulties trusting him. She would really like to start trusting him again, but she can’t. He is also starting to get frustrated with her distrust and anxiety. What can she do to help herself?

for however long she needs to. This is the price he must pay for his transgressions if he wants to stay with her. For her, it might be helpful to remember that you can’t just wish to trust someone. Consistent honesty of her husband over time is what might rebuild her trust. Sometimes it’s best to just relax about the whole matter and allow time to do its magic.

Dr. D: Let me ask you a couple of questions first. Did her husband confess to her voluntarily that he cheated?

MW: So time is the key to building trust?

MW: No. Someone leaked the information to her, actually about his two past affairs.

Dr. D: Did he admit to cheating once he had been caught?

MW: No. At first he denied it all together. Then he admitted to the most recent brief affair. But he greatly minimized the extent of a long and involved affair he had a few years earlier. Then, after months of pressure from her, apparently one day he broke down and told her everything, including voluntarily telling her about a third affair he had at some point. At that point, she felt he was honest and that he told her everything, yet she continues feeling very insecure and distrustful one year later.

Dr. D: The picture seems fairly clear here, I think. First of all, it is a positive sign that he eventually came through with some new information she didn’t know, and that she genuinely feels he came clean with her. This might mean that he genuinely decided to change his ways and become an honest man. At the same time, his long-standing past lack of honesty, and his subsequent attempts at cover-up have most naturally resulted in her loss of trust towards him. In my books, she should allow herself to feel completely entitled to distrust him, until he proves otherwise over a longer period of time. It’s unreasonable to expect that after years of dishonesty, trust will be rebuilt in one year. Also, keep in mind that some people just won’t be able to regain trust once a violation of this magnitude has occurred.

MW: What can she do to help this process if she wants to move forward and rebuild the relationship? Dr. D: I think the most important factor is time. Trust happens when we see that someone’s actions match their words. Unfortunately, for years, this man’s actions did not match his words, and he shouldn’t expect that changing his ways will lead to a quick rebuilding of trust. To me, his current lack of patience is a little bit alarming. I think if he is serious about building an honest relationship with this woman, he needs to give her complete permission to process her emotions around this issue in whichever way and

26 | STYLE MANITOBA | winter 2012

Dr. D: Yes. And this is true about any relationship. The best method to determine whether someone is trustworthy is to simply observe whether their actions consistently match their words. We all like talking, but one should not take what someone says too seriously before it is backed up with actions. If you keep to this simple method rather than getting lost in wishful thinking, you will prevent yourself from feeling disappointed with others. If you see someone say one thing and do another, it is best to assume that what they say in the future might be empty talk, and to not expect that they will follow up on their promises.

MW: So giving trust as a starting point is not a good idea?

Dr. D: We need to trust. Our survival depends on trusting others; right from the time we are born until the day we die. I recently drove along a two-lane highway east of Kenora, and became very aware that I was entrusting my life to every single driver approaching from the opposite direction. And these were complete strangers. Trust is the fabric of the net that holds us together. Distrust and cynicism is not a solution, but rather a poison to meaningful connections. Trust is necessary. But one has to be smart and realistic about who and when to trust.

MW: If trust is the “net that holds us together” as you say, then how do we build greater trust around us?

Dr. D: The best you can do is to strive towards fostering trustworthiness in yourself. It is my opinion that remaining honest about who you are and what you want (even if others might not like it), as well as matching words with actions, is extremely important. It is through your own actions that you can contribute to the creation of a more honest community and culture. And when it comes to others, surround yourself with those you can trust, and don’t reinforce dishonesty in others. * DAVDA Psychology is a psychotherapy and personal coaching clinic. Cover and refrigerate for at least 1 hour, or until chilled. Makes 8 servings. Tip: If desired, garnish with a dollop of whipped cream on each custard cup and a sprinkling of candied ginger.

Garlicky Mushroom Florentine 1 - 2 tbsp (15 - 30 mL) olive oil 1 clove garlic, minced 1/2 lb (250 g) fresh mushrooms, sliced 4 large eggs 3 cups (750 mL) baby spinach, loosely packed 4 slices of multi-grain bread, toasted 2 tbsp (30 mL) finely chopped fresh parsley Pour olive oil into a large non-stick frying pan. Sauté the garlic and mushrooms over medium heat for 2-3 minutes. In the meantime, bring 3 inches of water to a boil in a medium saucepan. Reduce heat to a gentle simmer. Break one egg into a small dish. Gently slip egg into water. Repeat the process with the remaining eggs. Cook eggs in barely simmering water for 3 to 5 minutes or until cooked as desired. Add spinach to the mushrooms and garlic and cook until wilted, 1 - 2 minutes. Place one piece of toast on each plate. Layer each toast with one quarter of the spinach mixture and top with a poached egg. Sprinkle fresh parsley on top. Makes 4 servings. winter 2012 | STYLE MANITOBA | 29

Bookshelf 100 Grey Cups: This is Our Game (McClelland & Stewart) by Stephen Brunt

Acclaimed sports writer Stephen Brunt delivers this official history of Canadian football’s greatest prize and the team who competed for it, from the early amateurs to today’s professionals, major teams as well as long-gone clubs like the Sarnia Imperials (three Grey Cups, the last in 1936, twice champions). Along the way, Brunt covers the Fog Bowl (won by Winnipeg over two days in 1962) and the desperate, half-cocked American expansion, including the winners of the 1995 Cup, Baltimore. There’s Lord Grey himself, who probably never saw a football game, and Angelo Mosca and Joe Kapp. Complete with game statistics and lots of photographs.

Old MacDonald Had Her Farm (Annick Press) by JonArno Lawson

JonArno Lawson reconfigures the old rhyme and mixes it up with his own brand of zany vowel play in this picture book full of pure delight. Farmer MacDonald uses a wacky array of madcap machines catapults, conveyor belts, and hybrid bicycles - to manage her spread, while Lawson describes the action with treacherous tongue-twisters: “cows chomp on socks” indeed. With vibrant illustrations by Tina Holdcroft, this is a book for kids that adults will have plenty of fun reading out loud.

Grandmaison captures images of open water, ice, flowers in full bloom, fall foliage, and snow in landscapes that are rich in details or almost abstract in their purity. There’s wildlife, too: plains bison, deer, hawk, coyote, black-tailed prairie dogs (a threatened species), a black bear and her cub. With text by Jan Volney and notes by the photographer. Can The Lost Tapes (Mute/EMI) Feel like getting stretched? Can would take you with them. This box of secrets vindicates those old, delicious rumours that the German sonic mystics honed their astonishing telepathy for group improvisation, unstoppable drive and atmospheric intrigue across miles of recording tape in their private studio. More than three hours of immediate music has been filtered from the more than 50 trapped in a closet’s worth of tapes spanning 1968-1977. A few familiar themes emerge, notably through extended accounts of their soundtrack music, but all is refracted through research – Mushroom’s terrifying single-mindedness is scattered, while the sinister Spoon is accelerated breathlessly. Michael Karoli’s guitar playing is surprisingly aggressive, creative catalysts Irmin Schmidt (keyboards) and Holger Czukay (bass) enjoy new prominence, while Jaki Liebezeit’s thinking-centipede drumming has no peers in rock. Archivist/engineer Jono Podmore has polished those near-forgotten entries to a modern polish and presence, and he’s also assembled sketches and snapshots into new work, creating worlds within worlds while never losing the band’s remarkable signature. Mark Knopfler Privateering Mercury/Universal) The cover art features a van on blocks, which is an odd fit for music that’s portable in two senses. In the first, Mark Knopfler keeps mining a rich seam of rootless travellers and nose-to-the-grindstone workers (the bitterly wry Yon Two Crows is sung by a sheep farmer). In the second, he favours a smaller, more intimate sound; alone in his tax bracket, Knopfler is the one who could go back to playing the pubs without a major renovation to the live show. That could explain the new jolt of bar-worthy blues, accented by Kim Wilson’s harmonica playing and the man’s own slide guitar. Whatever the truth, it hasn’t hurt his art with the timeworn love song, with Radio City Serenade up there with the best of his.

Pet Shop Boys Elysium (Parlophone/EMI) Men of a certain age may be forgiven the occasional reflective indulgence. The Pet Shop Boys cast a weary, arched eyebrow at pop vanity in Ego Music, but that’s countered by the self-deprecating Your Early Stuff (“You’ve been around/but you don’t look too rough”). Elysium may be business as usual for Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe, as some critics hold, but it remains an elegant business – the music of two intelligent men of excellent taste who are never too refined to love pop music, or to write it.

Connecting mind, body and spirit By Leigh Patterson Photography: Mike Sanders

Just over two years ago, Bernice Bisson stopped at a red light at the foot of the Louise Bridge in Elmwood and noticed an older brick building on the banks of the Red River. It was just as she had imagined for years – the perfect place to start her dream business. Just one month later, on October 31, 2010, Soul Medicine Psychic Shoppe opened its doors and has since welcomed hundreds of clients seeking inspiration from some of the best tealeaf, tarot card readers, mediums and other metaphysical practitioners in the province. “Winnipeg is like a nexus, with its connected river system, strong spiritualist and metaphysical community,” Bisson says. “There is such a diverse collection of people and beliefs here.” This physic undercurrent allowed Bisson to gather together a core group of 14 readers and practitioners. Together, they work as a collective, each bringing their unique talents to the table. Tarot, angel oracle, traditional tealeaf and flame, astrology, numerology and medium readings take place at the Shoppe by appointment, in one of three private rooms that accommodate up to a group of 12 people. “People come to us for a variety of reasons – purely for entertainment or to provide clarity and insight,” Bisson explains. “The premises of our Shoppe include giving people a sense of belonging, as well as a sense of mastery and independence gained through knowledge.” In this confidential, enigmatic atmosphere, Bisson finds people are comfortable enough “to ask questions they always wanted to ask.” “The best readings happen when you’re present and in a relaxed state,” she adds. “Time slows down when you are here.” To help achieve this state of calm, clients and visitors are served freshly steeped tea in delicate, beautiful china teacups and saucers. In fact, tea is one of the Shoppe’s strongest

drawing cards, with 120 varieties of loose teas in jars lining one wall of the store. The Shoppe is a veritable tea aficionado’s paradise, where teas with such delectable flavours as “Hip Hop Honey Licorice,” “Marzipan Rooibos” and “Caramel Cherry Cheesecake” are sold by the bag or tin. Bernice started reading tealeaves at the age of 11, taught by a family friend who she describes as “a kind, older Métis woman and an excellent tealeaf reader.” She also attended tealeaf readings with her mother at local tearooms. These fond childhood memories, a love of tea and a desire to bring people together is also the reason Bisson, together with business partner and long-time friend Chantal Roy, are adding an English style tearoom upstairs above the Shoppe. Roy will oversee the tearoom – expected to open in December - where low and high tea menus will include salads, quiche and desserts. Guests can opt for a tealeaf reading with their meal, served in one of several rooms vibrantly decorated with beaded chandeliers and original stained glass windows. Large windows

overlooking the river will afford amazing views and natural light. The tearoom will host private functions and spirit messaging nights, among many events. A patio is planned for next summer, and ample free parking will be available. Visitors to the Shoppe can browse a selection of great gift ideas including jewellery and artwork by local artisans, essential and blended oils, a broad genre of mind-body-spirit books, incense, candles, gemstones and healing crystals, as well as charms and spell kits and divination tools. The Soul Medicine Psychic Shoppe works to support, connect with and promote likeminded people in the community, establishing partnerships with local groups like Muddy Water Tours ghost tours. The Shoppe also offers free public workshops and can host psychic parties at clients’ homes. “People are searching for spirit, how to connect to energy and use it. This is so important to develop,” Bisson says. “Our energy is scattered – we help people channel it. Ultimately, our goal is to have people leave here feeling better.”

Flying High An interview with Adam Beach is on the phone from Vancouver, talking about his CBC series, Arctic Air. The second season premieres in January, and Beach knows he isn’t the only person looking forward to the new episodes.

Arctic Air’s Adam Beach By Quentin Mills-Fenn

“People are going to love it,” he says. “I think everyone is getting more comfortable in their characters.” The actor started his television career with guest appearances on familiar shows like The Rez, North of 60, Touched by an Angel, and Walker, Texas Ranger, and now stars in his own series. Set in Yellowknife, Arctic Air tells the story of a maverick airline and its fleet of aging aircraft. Beach plays Bobby Martin, who runs the enterprise with his late father’s partner. Even with all the personal conflicts and a mystery or two, there’s still lots of room in the episodes for dramatic flying missions. The show is filmed in Vancouver. “The people are great here,” he says. “It’s pretty and water is everywhere. It’s like a spa. “But Winnipeg - my family is there. Every time I come home, I’m reminded how lucky I am. When I’m in Winnipeg, I hang out with my friends. Most definitely, man.” A Saulteaux Canadian, Beach was born in Ashern, Manitoba, and grew up on Lake Manitoba / Dog Creek First Nation Reserve. After losing both parents suddenly in a short period of time, Beach and his two brothers were raised first by their grandmother, a survivor of a residential school, and then moved to Winnipeg to live with their aunt and uncle. Beach says that creative endeavors have long been an important, beneficial outlet for him, helping him through difficult times when he was young. He took drama classes in high school and appeared on stage at the Manitoba Theatre for Young People. “I grew up in a rough neighbourhood,” he says, “So it was a way for me to find myself and deal with my situation of loss. It was a good escape.” Turns out those early days were the beginning of a very successful career. His breakthrough film role was in Bruce McDonald’s Dance Me Outside in 1995. Since then, Beach has made movies with Clint Eastwood (Flags of Our Fathers), Harrison Ford and Daniel Craig (Cowboys and Aliens), and Nicholas Cage (Windtalkers), and has had recurring roles on the television series Big Love and Law & Order: Special Victims Unit.

Now he wants to share what’s he’s learned in the business and help others succeed. Beach is excited to talk about a very personal project, his way to assist Aboriginal youth to establish careers in film by providing training and resources on reserves in Canada and the U.S. Helping people share their experiences and their histories is a big part of what drives the actor. “I’m building the Adam Beach Film Institute,” he says. “We get the equipment and teach how to create good product, creating a product about their reserves so everybody can tell their stories. Basically, it’s my attempt to create a TV station on a reserve.” He goes on to talk about Open Vision Network Television, a platform for Native filmmakers. Beach is convinced of the importance of preserving and continuing traditional First Nations learning, and how committed individuals in the film industry can help advance that vital work.

“We as Native filmmakers are trying to create ways of sharing our traditions and culture because a lot of people have to see it. We want to open the door and share the teaching,” says Beach. “It saved my life. It’s my strength. It made me who I am. I think we have to express that more,” he adds. “We have a lot to do to educate the ignorant, the ones who don’t know those stories. But you have to be open to your environment.” Beach’s vision encompasses Canada’s North to the people in his hometown. Everywhere he goes, Beach sees people with something to say. “When I go to Winnipeg, I see Native people in all walks of life. Mothers and fathers, doctors, and people on the street. We’re everywhere,” says Beach. “I’m 39 and I’m not going to be able to play 20-year-olds anymore, so I’m wondering who the next guys to carry the torch are,” he adds.

Pampering perfected

By Leigh Patterson

Since 2004, Riverstone Spa has garnered a stellar reputation as the ultimate escape from the everyday. Now, after several months of extensive renovations, the spa has reopened, and guests can expect to enjoy an even greater level of unparalleled personal pampering. Conveniently located in the heart of the beautiful Inn at the Forks, Riverstone Spa’s latest enhancements mean reviving mind, body and spirit in a private and relaxed setting like no other. A focus on comfort is evident in the expanded lounge space, replete with fireplace, more seating and an artistic, soothing décor. Guests can unwind in the steam rooms or in lavish aromatherapy saunas made of aromatic and beautiful Alaskan white cedar – two amenities that have been added to the women’s and men’s change rooms as part of the renovations. Before and after their spa treatment, guests can also indulge in an unforgettable shower experience by stepping into one of the new opulent, shower stalls encased in Italian tile and teak wood. Additional space was created in the women’s change room to ensure privacy, and some treatment areas have been enhanced. The spa has several new larger treatment rooms, including an additional “couple’s room” where couples can relax and rejuvenate together during a Couple’s Massage: a popular gift for newlyweds or anniversaries.

Every detail of the renovations is in keeping with Riverstone Spa’s commitment to creating a sanctuary of wellness. “We maximized every inch of space to make this the most luxurious experience possible for our guests,” says Inn at the Forks General Manager and proprietor Ben Sparrow. “Our goal is to make people feel great, to take a break and focus on themselves.” Riverstone Spa’s immaculate, contemporary surroundings and amenities are combined with an evolving array of services, products and gift ideas. The spa is renowned for its extensive menu of therapeutic and relaxing massage therapy options, including the Riverstone Signature Head to Toe Massage: a full body experience that leaves skin feeling soft and muscles free from tension. Female and male registered massage therapists perform all massage treatments at Riverstone Spa. Massage therapy is covered under most healthcare plans and receipts are issued on request. Along with specialty treatments that include body wraps, and a “Gentlemen’s Menu” of services customized for men, the spa offers a number of hand and foot treatments. The Zero Gravity Hand and Foot Treatment is enjoyed in the relaxing comfort of a zero gravity chair. This treatment includes basic nail cutting, light cuticle work and callous buffing, moisturizing paraffin and polish for both hands and feet.

Recent additions to the spa’s skincare treatment services include the Medi-Spa Skin Care SilkPeel™ Dermalinfusion™ - a cutting edge technology that provides non-invasive exfoliation and the delivery of revolutionary, skin specific, topical solutions simultaneously. This patented technology combines several benefits in a single procedure to help achieve younger-looking skin in less time, and can address a number of skin conditions. A variety of spa escape packages provide utmost relaxation for a few hours or a full day. The Aaaahhh Package for example, is a truly decadent experience, combining a couple’s massage treatment with an overnight stay at Inn at the Forks complete with sparkling wine, chocolate truffles and breakfast for two at The Current Restaurant. As always, Riverstone Spa makes holiday giving easy with gift cards available for purchase in person or online. Gift cards can be redeemed for Riverstone Spa treatments or products, as well as for meals at The Current Restaurant, or hotel rooms at Inn at the Forks. When it is time to de-stress or to give the gift of an hour, a day, or a weekend of bliss, Riverstone Spa is the natural place to treat yourself or someone special. The bride’s hairpiece was also designed by Kaitlyn, and can be made in many colours with variations, and customized to suit any wedding, special event, or just for jazzing up your hair. Winter weddings are becoming so popular for many reasons: 1) Prices tend to be better in the off-season for most venues, and less busy, leaving more choices for your big day.

Party of Three… Set your sights on glamour this holiday season and get your hair dressed! The trend is lux furs, diamonds, gold and pearls - what a way to get to the party! 2) Destination weddings are the way to go for a less stressful planning schedule, and of course, a holiday honeymoon to boot. Costs will be less for the couple, but it’s necessary to weigh out how many of your guests may come. However, with enough notice, they will be enjoying a holiday as well. 3) Some couples are opting for a themed social / wedding (e.g. New years bash, wedding winter wonderland), and even giving some of the proceeds of the silent auction to a charity of their choice. Whatever you choose, rituals in hair and skin can get you ready for your big day, and create hair, skin and make-up rituals that will add to your special day. Book hairstyling and make-up lessons, as well as a skin regime approach, so you can duplicate a look while you’re away. Rituals will also come up with a travel product package to suit your needs for a destination wedding / vacation. Where inspiration lives A small store with a big heart, Great Finds Fashion Accessories is a place where inspiration lives. For nearly a decade, this stylish boutique has defined itself with cuttingedge fashion, friendly staff and community spirit. Great Finds owner and fashion maven Laurie Carey believes the store has grown and prospered thanks to her fundamental rule: listening to her customers. “I believed that in the beginning and believe that today,” she says.

From Montreal-based company Crystal comes funky, edgy items like tunic tops that can be paired with cozy leggings for the hottest look this season. Sparkly-mesh knit cover-ups are another popular item, Carey says. “Adding a coverup takes that year-old outfit and makes it hip again.” Great Finds takes care of its customers underneath, too, with strong sellers like The Unbelievabra by Shapeez. This undergarment provides a smooth silhouette even under the most body-conscious clothing. True to its name, Great Finds is loaded with accessories to put the finishing touches on any ensemble. Belts, evening gloves, fascinators, and an extensive variety of purses can be found here - even tiny bags perfect for the club scene.

The store is a treasure trove of home décor and gift ideas, including Soy Harvest candles, seasonal ornaments and music boxes, as well as colourful Romero Britto art collectibles. Helpful staff will assist customers in choosing the perfect gift, and they’ll wrap it, too. Uncanny fashion sense, together with tireless devotion to customers and the larger community has established Great Finds as a sparkling gem - where people can feel as good on the inside as they will look on the outside. When it comes to scarves, Great Finds is Winnipeg’s go-to store. “We never have fewer than 200 to 300 scarves in the store at a given time,” Carey notes. These range from glamorous scarves with built-in bling to warm, textured versions. An entire wall showcases a huge selection of funky watches, necklaces, bracelets and rings to suit every taste. products now available in-store, including mixed martial arts products like the Body action system. Krevco Lifestyles recently became the Manitoba retail and commercial location for the Flaman Fitness’ line of products, as well as being the only store to offer the “as seen on TV” Bowflex TreadClimber. The TreadClimber combines the forward belt of a treadmill, the step-up action of a stair climber, and the low-impact motion of an elliptical to create a workout that burns up to 3.5 times more calories than the same speed workout on a treadmill. It’s also designed to be less stressful on joints, while still offering great cardio training. Krevco Lifestyles are already booking pre-sales for the TreadClimber, which will be in-store in November. Krevco Lifestyles also offers traditional cardio equipment, such as treadmills, ellipticals and exercise bikes, from trusted brand names in fitness such as Nautilus, Schwinn, Bowflex, and Freemotion.

Year Round Activity & Comfort By Carly Peters • Photography: Mike Sanders While the winter keeps you inside, stay active with fitness equipment, and stay warm with a fresh fireplace or new steam shower. Krevco’s name has undoubtedly become synonymous with pools and hot tubs, but when Don Carson, president, added Krevco Lifestyles to the company umbrella over six years ago, he turned the brand from a summer staple to a year-round “gotta have” store. Winter elements, including swim spas, steam showers, saunas, billiards, furnaces, fireplaces and fitness equipment, ensure your home is just as fun and functional when the snow flies.

Feel Hot

As the temperature drops, people’s thoughts turn to staying indoors and keeping warm. Nothing adds to a room like a fireplace for warmth and ambiance. Since acquiring Embers Fireplaces several years ago, Krevco has been slowly integrating the brand into each store. All five locations now carry the full line under the Embers Fireplaces banner. From gas burning, wood burning, electric, stove, pellet and specialty fireplaces, customers can choose from large selection of different models from the leading industry brands. One of the latest offerings from Travis Industries is a hybrid wood burning fireplace system that boasts some of the cleanest burning on the market. “The standard for most wood burning systems is 4.5 grams of smoke per hour,” says Kerry

Johnson, general manager of the fireplace division. “This system, seen in Cape Cod style, burns at .45. It produces significantly less carbon monoxide.” Krevco Lifestyles is also exclusive proprietor of Travis Industries’ patented Green Start electronic ignition system for wood burning stoves. The system preheats the chimney, and with a touch of a button ignites the wood, no kindling or newspapers are needed, eliminating that puff of smoke that usually blows back into the home. Johnson states when selecting a fireplace for your home, customers needs to consider not just the BTUs of a fireplace, but the efficiency as well. Having too large of a system in a small room can be overpowering, while a smaller system may get lost in a big space. Many fireplaces come with control elements where flames can be reduced by 86 percent, or the burner can be turned off completely.

For something a little more interactive, nothing gets you moving in your own home gym like the Body Action System and Nexersys iPower Trainer, an interactive and intelligent fitness product that delivers a high-intensity mixed martial arts (MMA) interval training workout through technique, strike, core and cardio video training and avatar sparring rounds. Once your cardio is complete, Krevco Lifestyles can round out your fitness routine with traditional strengthening pieces, such as barbell, and olympic weights, as well cross training / CrossFit accessories including kettle bells, TRX systems and resistance bands. “We’re finding people are creating dedicated rooms in homes for exercise,” says Torres. “It eliminates the drive to and from the gym, and offers the flexibility of working out any time your schedule allows.” Worried you might miss the steam you usually take after a workout at the gym? Krevco Lifestyles can help with that as well. Warming elements such as steam showers, hot tubs and swim spas can keep you moving well into the winter months in the comfort of your own home.

“You can still have the flickering flame without the heat, which makes it ideal even still in the summer,” he adds.

Look Hot

When it comes to exercise, cardio is number one on people’s “get fit list” states Gill Torres, who oversees Krevco Lifestyles’ fitness division. Having worked in the fitness retail sector for over 20 years, Torres offers not only a great base of knowledge about healthy living in general, but also about the wide range of fitness

You have to see it to believe it. Operated by All Seniors Care Living Centres, a Canadian family business that has become a world-leading innovator in age in place residences, River Ridge opened this past September. This stunningly beautiful residence conveys elegance and comfort with the promise of a wonderful quality of life. The owners of All Seniors Care have listened carefully to the recommendations made by tenants in their other five residences in Manitoba. Inside

River Ridge you will see the results of these suggestions with many thoughtful additions added after conversations with the owners during visits to the Winnipeg residences. The Look Out Lounge, Exercise Room, MultiPurpose Room and the gorgeous dining room all have fabulous river views. Here you can dine or exercise while enjoying the beauty of the Red River and the trees that line the riverside. Even the Chapel on the sixth floor has a breath-taking view of the river and the panorama of this northeast part of Winnipeg. The theatre, library and Internet lounge, bistro and games room are wonderfully appointed to ensure your comfort and pleasure. Indeed, everything about this building conveys ‘joie de vivre.’ River Ridge allows you to be a Winnipegger enjoying a retirement that is as it should be amid the beauty of the prairie, river and sky. River Ridge is all about the enjoyment of a beautiful home surrounded by the warmth of community, where many paths have been crossed throughout the past. Orchestrated by an executive chef whose reputation in this field is second to none, Chef Stephen Towle creates dishes that please both the eye and the palate. Those with special dietary needs need not worry. River Ridge can accommodate most special diets with the assistance of their consulting registered dietician. Your dining experience will be fulfilling in many ways. The food is superb, the surroundings and views are beautiful, and the community forming here at River Ridge is a warm and welcoming one.

Residents can stay warm and happy for the winter. River Ridge’s active recreation program has something for everyone. For outings, there’s no need to worry about the ice and cold. River Ridge has a brand new shuttle bus that will take you where you would like to go without the worry of parking and slipping and sliding. River Ridge is a six-storey building with 173 one and two bedroom suites that all have remarkable views of the Red River and the tree lined neighbourhood. Pat Stephenson, Executive Director, and her team have been busy assisting a steady stream of people moving in and making this wonderful residence their home. Building Success By Kelly Gray

In life, one success tends to follow another. This is the case with Oxbow on the Seine, a recent condominium development in Winnipeg’s southeast spearheaded by Creek Bend Project Inc. and marketed by the ‘RossSisters’. Laura and Marnie Ross are award-winning REALTORS® with Century 21 Bachman and Associates. The “Oxbow on the Seine” is a multi-phase condominium complex that has seen the first and second buildings sell quickly. Expectations are that this will be the case with Phase 3 as it readies for construction this coming year with pre-sales starting in November 2012. “The developers have created all three phases that have and will provide people with what they want. It’s just that simple,” says Laura Ross, who remarks that time and again, the developers have listened to what purchasers are looking for and have implemented that information into their designs. The result has been a sell-out of Phase 1 and with Phase 2 more than 85 percent sold. What excites condo purchasers at “The Oxbow on the Seine” is a property where the developers pulled out all the stops to deliver a structure that was built to a very high standard. For example, Laura reports, “The buildings feature insulated concrete-form walls with a piled, concrete foundation and eight-inch hollow-core floors with concrete topping for soundproofing. It makes for a very quiet, safe and energy efficient place to live.” Marnie Ross agrees, noting that people who have lived in wood frame structures are often surprised at the peacefulness offered by concrete construction. She suggests that the designers of the Oxbow complex took

privacy and the need for personal quietness into account when they drew up the plans. “At these condos, you can feel free to live your life without worry that you will disturb your neighbours.” The RossSisters comment that Phase 3 will follow along the lines of the other two buildings in the complex. Phase 1 offered 64 suites, Phase 2 offered 79 suites and Phase 3 will have 84 suites that will vary from 798 to 1432 square feet. Standard finishing will include choice of Caesarstone or granite countertops in the kitchen and baths, glass tile backsplashes, dark or light cabinetry, engineered hardwood floors in the kitchen, living room, dining room and dens where applicable. There will be breakfast bars, pantries and in-suite laundry. There will also be heated indoor parking and storage lockers for the majority of suites. The suites provide an open light-filled airy space thanks to nine-foot ceilings and oversized triple pane argon filled windows. The balconies are oversize, concrete and are covered. “There are highly desirable suites with river views that are made even more special with main floor walk down terraces and large balconies that serve to bring the incredible natural element of the area into the suites,” says Laura. Sweetening the package, the condos are appointed with a host of energy efficient features. Already mentioned are the triple glazed windows, but this is just a starting point in a concrete and steel building that features R40 walls and an R30 roof. The oversized bathrooms are appointed with low flush toilets and variable flow showerheads. Hot water is piped in from energy efficient tanks and the kitchens

feature the latest stainless steel appliances that all come with Energy Star designation. Each suite also has its own high efficiency forced air electric furnace (heating ventilating and air-conditioning) unit. Surprisingly, these units are so small they can be positioned beneath a drop ceiling in the utility closet, a feature that adds to the plug and play luxury of these welldesigned residences. The demographics of the buildings are young at heart. The RossSisters suggest that residents of the mostly owner-occupied buildings comprise of basically two categories. There are those in the 50 plus segment who are seeking to simplify without giving up creature comforts, as well as the young professionals who need a contemporary well-appointed condo that allows them to get on with their busy lifestyles. Meeting the needs of these groups, Phase 4 will offer a large common area where residents can utilize the fitness center and / or play a game of cards in the common room. “If you want to have a wedding shower, there is ample room to do this in the common room where residents can book the facility,” says Marnie. Describing the success of Oxbow on the Seine, Laura Ross concludes that it comes down to location, design and quality of construction. “The area is certainly well serviced in terms of retail and easy road access to places such as the University of Manitoba, but the beauty of the location speaks for itself. The same can be said about the solid concrete construction that contributes to in-suite quiet, as well as the open expansive designs.” Laura and Marnie Ross invite those interested in discovering the advantages of Oxbow on the Seine to visit www.oxbowcondos.com

Got You Covered By Carly peters

Trends in flooring are changing – what’s new and how to get the look. Laying a solid foundation is the basis for a quality house. So too is the flooring. From carpets to hardwoods, flooring sets the tone of the room, allowing the homeowner to use it as a base to build the rest of the décor from. Style Manitoba takes a look at some of the trends and the places where you can get them. In the past, dark minimal design was vogue. While there still are quite a few homes with this style, there has been a swing to the opposite side of the colour palette. As the image, which features a three-inch wide board laminate, illustrates, the trend towards medium to light flooring is becoming more popular. “People found the dark floors, while they look great, are harder to maintain,” says Francine Curtis of Curtis Carpets. “You don’t want to be a slave to your floors.”

While laminates in warm neutrals are still popular because of their richness, the European trends making it across the pond are seeing warm whites and grays. Curtis says these tones are a great basis for pops of colour, such as indigo and green, as well as black accents. When it comes to hard surfaces, hardwood still dominates despite laminate’s ability to mimic the real thing. Ideal for all in-home settings, woods can offer a stunning look that can stand the test of time. Plus, with the trend towards hand-scraped and wire-brushed finishes, the nicks and scrapes aren’t as prominent as in a cleaner maple. “Maple hardwood, which has been the choice for flooring, is very clear veined and great for a minimalistic look, but it shows everything,” states Curtis. “While oak, which is becoming popular in the hand-scraped, wire-brushed grains, as well as white washed, hides the imperfections and is easier to repair.” David Puddifant, general manager of Curtis Carpets, states that engineered hardwoods are something customers should consider as well. The benefit, besides being more eco-friendly, is an engineered product has been designed to provide greater stability, particularly where

moisture or heat poses problems for solid hardwood floors. And despite what some customers think, these floors can also be sanded. On the softer side of things, carpets are still the choice for bedrooms and lower level areas for their warmth (especially in this cold climate). Solid loop berbers are giving way to a soft hand yarn that offers a more luxurious feel berber pull, friezes or “California Casual” fashion carpets, which are a refinement of the ‘70s “shag” carpeting. Whatever you’re looking for as your base, Curtis Carpets’ trained sales associates can direct customers to the appropriate flooring options. As winner of the Consumer Choice Award for Best Flooring Store for several years, including 2012, the store hosts a wide variety of samples in hard surface and carpet offerings. The company’s estimators can also provide an accurate and fair assessment for installation. Sales associates will provide the homeowners with the information on the products they are considering. Curtis Carpets has also recently added UltraClean, a cleaning service to their repertoire. Certified cleaning specialists can come and service carpets, upholstery, furnace and duct work, all while using eco-friendly products. winter 2012 | STYLE MANITOBA | 59

Making Waves When visitors stepped into 23 Bridgelake Drive during the Fall Parade of Homes, they were, to aptly put it, floored. The rising and falling pattern rippling across the surface drew the eye across a limitless plane, and as it changed direction, created motion and emotion unseen in any other home in the showcase.

By Carly Peters

When Southwyn Homes originally approached The Floor Show they were looking to lay down a contemporary wide plank style throughout the kitchen and dining room. Paul Rivington with The Floor Show, says the custom homebuilder is well known for dramatic aspects - in this case high-vaulted barrel ceilings - and they wanted to bring something unique, that flowed well with the curves of rooms.

The only thing that would add as much impact was The Floor Show’s newest offering, the Jamie Beckwith Collection, an innovative line of prestige wood surfacing treatments for both floor and vertical surface. Inspired by the traditional warmth of wood but with an inventive and contemporary interpretation of ornamental patterns, every surface becomes a blank canvas to explore dimension, structure, shape, and light. In this case, Rivington suggested a white oak in The Wave pattern from the Jamie Beckwith Collection’s Enigma series. The gray wash, with aspects of blue, became the basis for the rest of the colours in the house, making the floor the truly commanding element of the home. The collection’s Enigma series offers unique and custom wood flooring designs. Use one of the 14 patterns, which range from lotus palms to jigsaw pieces, as a wall-to-wall flooring installation, mix of colours or patterns, or create an inset rug pattern in a traditional plank floor for a “wow factor” unseen with any other flooring. The Floor Show also carries the collection’s Projection line, a hardwood wall treatment that adds depth and dimension to walls with a series of blocks, in six depths, that can be combined at random or in calculated patterns. They come

winter 2012 | STYLE MANITOBA | 61

in a variety of styles, including rustic, polished, colour and linear, four different species of wood and eight stains. Creating elements that step beyond the traditional residential look is certainly a trend they are seeing at The Floor Show, states Rivington. “We are seeing trends coming out of the commercial end of flooring transitioning to residential,” he says, pointing to the example of vinyl plank flooring, which have wood patterns and textures. “These products are the fastest growing segment in flooring right now and are a great alternative to laminate flooring.” He adds that carpet tile is also a unique, new element being implemented in residential settings. The tiles have the ability to utilize multiple colours and patterns to do more. From creating depth to interesting motifs to being a customized area rug on a hardwood floor, they create innovation that can’t be matched with carpet that comes off a roll.

62 | STYLE MANITOBA | winter 2012

The Floor Show is excited to be adding FLOR, a residential line from Interface®, the world’s largest manufacturer of carpet tile, to their showrooms. FLOR is an innovative system of carpet squares that can be assembled to create custom rugs, runners, or wall-to-wall designs of any shape or size. Innovation is certainly the selling point of The Floor Show. Lines like the Jamie Beckwith Collection and FLOR are a testament to the store’s ability to bring in new products, and consistently evolve their product offering to be a step ahead of the competition. Samples can be seen at both The Floor Show’s Waverley location, as well as their showroom at the Kesay Design Centre.

Throw Down

Rugs occupy an ever more central position in floor fashions as the trend in hard flooring continues. With more people choosing hardwood or tiles for their homes, wide expanses of bare floors can make an interior feel cold and unwelcoming. A rug helps define areas, muffles noise, and provides warmth. While doing all that, rugs also greatly enhance the aesthetics of a room by providing a finishing touch. This particular room is very traditional and can be noted by way of texture, patterns, rich colour choices, the use of the stone in the fireplace, and the wood mantel. The Regent Street-style, Masland carpet, featured in West End colour, is a cut and loop style made from Stainmaster BCF Nylon, and adds a deep contrast to the surrounding fabrics. The designer chose a maple hardwood by Goodfellow in Latte because of its subtle characteristics that would allow a more traditional feel without the business of a heavily grained wood species. Ken’s Carpets & Urban Home Style is a onestop shop for all finishing touches whether it be hard surfaces, such as hardwood, laminate, cork, vinyl, and ceramic tiles, to complementary items including luxurious whole home carpets or area rugs. They can also custom order urban furniture, and finish off your home with blinds from ShadeO-Matic and Hunter Douglas, Joanne’s Fabrics for window coverings, upholstery, and throw cushions, as well as an array of mirrors, lamps and vases.

Laying Down A Classic

While shades of gray may be making their way on to most people’s floors, this custom designed kitchen for Hilton Homes showcases that classics might just be making a comeback. John Gulyas of Elite Floors Ltd. states that polished, high-gloss tiles are giving floors a sense of luxury that has been somewhat lost with the muted, natural options. The company cut a black, polished, 12 x 12 porcelain tile to create a 4 x 4 option to be inset in the glossy-white, 12 x 24 tile in a basket-weave pattern, creating a stunning kitchen floor reminiscent of another era. Gulyas notes that porcelain tile, which is essentially a ceramic tile but is more highly refined and purified, does tend to be denser, more resistant to damage, and doesn’t absorb water like its clay counterpart. That being said, ceramic tile is certainly taking the place of vinyl flooring. “The initial cost may be a little more for the ceramic, but it’s forever,” he states, adding people with open concept kitchen / dining room / great room settings are also choosing to flow the hardwood straight into the kitchen. Elite Floors Ltd. has been following and in some cases creating trends for over 20 years. Gulyas, who has been in the industry for 40 years, and his team, are highly knowledgeable about all flooring options, from tile to carpet to hardwoods. With quality workmanship, and a satisfaction guarantee (30 days in fact) Elite Floors Ltd. can create the look you’ll love.

Kitchen&Bath

Super Steel By Carly peters

You might not realize how many times a day you use your kitchen sink. From washing the dishes, to prepping fruits and vegetables, to giving your hands a quick rinse, it’s one of the most used elements in that area. Once complete with a faucet, it can also be a statement piece, turning your average prep area into a professional styled setting. The Julien line of handcrafted, 16-gauge commercial grade stainless steel sinks have been developed for the professional market for over 60 years, and in 2003, the company began producing a line for residential applications. The sinks are 25 percent thicker than 18 gauge, which not only provides better impact resistance, but also improves noise absorption.

“There are thick sound pads so when you hit the sides you just get a thud,” states Astrid Bergstrom, Showroom Manager for Robinson Bath Centre, adding the sink on the left, which is shown in the J7 model, also features some of the company’s sink accessories. These include drain fittings, grids, cutting boards, colanders, and built-in storage drawers for easy access to cleaning accessories you want to keep out of sight.

states that many people are designing their kitchens in order to feature two sinks - one for larger jobs such as washing dishes, and a smaller basin for other work. The narrow sink on the right is an example of a secondary sink. At six inches deep and 30 inches long (it can also come in 42, or 49 inches), it’s ideal for prep work, or even for storage, says Bergstrom. She adds that in many showhomes, she saw the sink filled with ice and beverages.

The J7, which is one of five collections from Julien, combines a minimalist design of seven millimetre corners with maximum flexibility of both square and large radius sinks.

Whatever the size or style, Julien sinks are made from 80 percent recycled stainless steel, and are fully recyclable, making it the ideal choice for the “green” home.

The company can also create custom order sinks to fit any application or space. Bergstrom

Robinson Bath Centre has four models of the Julien sink on display at their Ellice showroom.

Kitchen&Bath High Gloss

Even through this home is located in the rural development of Stone Ridge Meadows in Stonewall, 3 Campbell Road has a highly urban feel. With wide-planked white oak flooring flowing through the kitchen, dining and great room, an ultra-cool accent wall, and other contemporary features, the kitchen needed to reflect the modern mode, yet hold its relevance in the years to come. “The client’s vision was for a modern, ecofriendly and functional kitchen that would be great for entertaining and everyday use,” states Karen Neufeld from Norcraft Cabinets Canada. To get a timeless look, Norcraft stayed with classic white, clean profile doors in thermofoil high gloss for the main cabinetry, and above that, added aluminum framed, wall lift up units with glass inserts for sparkle. While they have the fashion, the cabinets also have the function, featuring soft close doors and full-extension, soft close drawer boxes. The plate-glass backsplash shines with LED and compact fluorescent (energy efficient) lighting for task and accent lighting, and reflects off the Caesarstone quartz countertop with recycled mirror. Kitchen&Bath Clean Lines

With a modern, minimalistic look throughout the home, the clean lines continue in 27 Bridgelake’s ensuite bathroom. Kitchen and Bath Classics paired two Toto products for the double sinks housed on the vanity. The Vernica Design II sinks feature simple rectangular lines, and are compact enough to fit on the long, but shallow countertop. The taps, from Toto’s Legato line, also feature similar elongated lines, with a Japanese inspired angled handle. Featuring solid brass construction, the line comes in polished chrome, polished nickel and brushed nickel finishes. The matching Legato fixtures also transfer to the Azzura Po2 air-jetted tub. Air tubs have become a popular alternative to traditional jetted tubs, thanks to the air blower that generates thousands of tiny bubbles, which provide a gentler, hydrotherapy massage for the user. And in some instances, air tubs are also a cleaner option since there are no pipes or pumps that can harbour elements that breed bacteria. The ensuite also features a custom stand-up shower (not pictured), also with Toto faucets to keep the flow of lines throughout the fixtures. Finally, the client requested a greener, cleaner option in the lavatory. Therefore, Kitchen and Bath Classics utilized the Toto Vespin II, a low-flow fixture with a 4.8 litre DUAL CYCLONE flushing SYSTEM, which features a skirted bowl. The unique swirling CYCLONE flushing system is only available through Toto, and helps to keep the low water consumption toilet cleaner and stay clean longer.

Farm Fresh

Feeding a big family and a bunch of hungry farmhands requires a large kitchen. The owners of this Manitoba farmhouse added an extra 20-feet of space for hosting the help, as well as doing the usual cooking and canning for the family. The homeowner really liked the look of two-tone cabinetry, and selected a white / grey combination. The expansive cabinets in polar white maple with the Cambria quartz countertops (colour Devon) feature single and stacked levels, as well as a combination of wood and glass fronts. The island cabinets provide a light / dark contrast with the maple in cobblestone. The island, which provides extra seating space, was custom designed to also feature a lower level counter (seen in the back, right corner). “The homeowner likes to do a lot of preserves, and wanted a space at a lower level to place her hot pots without having to lift them up onto a counter,” states Dorothy Janzen, of Kitchens Plus. “She had a lot of details she wanted in the kitchen, and we worked together with her to achieve her wish list and get it just right.” Kitchens Plus is known for listening to their customer’s “wants,” and achieving the desired results. The homeowners chose the company for this large-scale project on referral from others in the area that were extremely happy with their Kitchens Plus experience. winter 2012 | STYLE MANITOBA | 67

Kitchen&Bath Affordable Luxury

This newly built home on Ronnander in Charleswood includes a wide, open concept great room and dining room. With nine-foot ceilings, the kitchen needed to be equally as powering. The homeowners called upon and entrusted Lisa Warren-Dunitz, a kitchen designer at the Kitchen Craft showroom on Kenaston Blvd., to create an ergonomically correct and attractive kitchen for their new home, and to look after all the details from design to completion. Through Warren-Dunitz’s many years of experience and her immense knowledge of construction, kitchen design, and kitchen products, she implemented many special features in the kitchen, much to the delight of the homeowners. Built-in stainless steel appliances offer a touch of cool to the depth of the rich looking maple cabinetry. Kitchen Craft offers a huge selection of styles and colours, and after much thought, these homeowners selected the Newhaven door style in the espresso stain. This kitchen not only looks great but also provides the homeowners with functionality and a cozy meeting place with family or guests. Just to mention a few of the well thought-out features, the island countertop bows out in order to create a seating arrangement that promotes conversation rather than all just sitting in a row. On one end of the island a built in stainless steel bar fridge offers easy access for entertaining.

Creative Craft

Sometimes a craft is just in the genes. Lyle Green followed in his cabinetmaker father’s footsteps, and at the age of 22, the self-taught woodworker began installing cabinetry for local companies. After working for others, he decided to start creating his own handcrafted cabinets, thus evolving into Green’s Cabinets Plus, which specializes in affordable new custom kitchen cabinets and cabinet refacing. As a true custom builder, Lyle is able to understand how a design may or may not work almost intuitively. “He just seems to know. He has a good eye for detail, knows the materials and hardware, he knows the tools and how everything works together,” says Terrie Green, Lyle’s wife and business partner. “He likes to deal directly with the client to create what they dream.” The featured kitchen was inspired by a photo of an island that the client showed to Lyle, who then designed and customized the cabinets based on their needs. Lyle went about creating the highly unique island by marrying a bright, clean Silestone Quartz countertop and white sides with an inset Zebrano melamine body. The matching Zebrano melamine doors on the cabinets are also a fresh option to the traditional dark, shaker style. The rural-based company is also known for custom pieces for bathrooms, office spaces, entertainment centres, bedrooms, mud rooms and mantels, all designed to fit the client’s space. 68 | STYLE MANITOBA | winter 2012

design&decor Hot Heat

Nothing beckons you more in the winter than the warm flame of a fireplace. Whether it’s natural gas or electric, modern or classic, a fireplace can create the ideal ambiance in any room to take off that winter chill. The Napoleon Wallmount Electric Fireplace, seen here with linear glass front and decorative white stone embers, plugs into a standard socket and requires no venting, so it can be mounted anywhere in the home for style and comfort. While usually featured primarily in the living room, fireplaces are making their way into master bedrooms and ensuite bathrooms. Instead of having just a picture hanging on the wall, fireplaces offer a functional piece with an element of warmth. The fireplace comes with a remote to control the heat output and flame intensity. It also features a heater switch, so while it can warm a space in the winter, it can also be turned off in the summer, but the flame will continue to flicker for continued atmosphere. Basic black is a popular choice, but the Dimplex product line comes in a variety of colours, including pewter and stainless steel, and can feature additional detailing, such as travertine tile. The sizes vary as well, depending on the wall space. This fireplace, along with many other styles and brands, can be seen and felt at Classic Fireplaces’ showroom.

Proud Crafters of Stair & Railing Systems

Stairs are not just a functional or structural element to your home, they are a statement piece that expresses your decor as well. Designing and building the staircase and railing combinations of your dreams is exactly what Winder Woodworks has been doing for over 28 years. This Parade showhome in South Pointe was in need of an innovative and contemporary styled staircase that incorporated light wood and glass, which ran throughout the upper and lower levels. Winder Woodworks built the stair structure and was involved in constructing the fir columns. “We can make anything people want. We like to create and we have quality people that can bring out the character you want,” states Walter Frischbutter. Winder Woodworks is committed to creating quality workmanship with their highly experienced staff and up-to-date technology. Using computer software and a CNC machine allows for efficiency and accuracy in producing stair and rail parts. When it comes time to get your new stairs, the company can provide the stair and rails in parts form, prefabricated ready to install, or is able to complete the entire installation. “Winder Woodworks has a reputation for building and installing projects where from start to finish quality and attention to detail matter most,” explains Frischbutter.

design&decor Traditional Twist

Hubbardton Forge’s Kirigami collection was partly inspired by the soft forms of flower petals, and the possibilities of simple folds in the paper that reveal complex contemporary shapes. The hand-forged steel fixtures, which come in multiple finishes ranging from Black, Bronze, Burnished Steel, Mahogany and Natural Iron, become the rigid frame that holds the shades. Shade options include spun frost, spun amber and cherry, which is real cherry wood veneer laminated to a backing with a clear varnish finish. Like all cherry wood, the colour of the grain will darken with age. The frost and amber options are made from spun fibers adhered to backings with a varnish finish, making it more durable and easier to clean than many paper and fabric shades. The adjustable pendant with three lights, shown in dark smoke finish and spun amber shade, is a transitional piece that would be well suited for a dining room, kitchen nook or front entrance. Hubbardton Forge builds in quality and structural integrity at every point along the way with heavy gauge steel, durable powder-coated finishes, hand-welded arms and shafts, and premium grade internal components. Thanks to their innovative and contemporary styles, Robinson Lighting is proud to carry the company’s lines, as well as other great North American-made products.

design&decor You’ve Got The Power Let’s talk in analogies for a moment. When you go to buy a new car, what would you choose, power or manual windows? Most automakers don’t even offer the latter, because power has become the standard and no longer just an option. Motion furniture is in its infancy of a revolution in power. If power is good enough for in your car, why wouldn’t it be good enough in your home with your recliner? “Manual is going the way of the dodo, and just as technology solved our car problems, it has now solved our reclining problems,” states Kelly Krentz, furniture buyer for Dufresne. “It’s all about making life easier.” When customers walk into a Dufresne location looking to purchase reclining furniture, they often begin by sitting in a manual recliner. Krentz says time and time again they see this customer search for the lever, struggle to lift the footrest up, squirm to find that comfortable position, and then try with all their might to return the footrest to the floor. While the piece can be plugged into the wall, Dufresne offers another solution to customers who want the power without the cords. Recliners can be connected to a rechargeable battery pack that allows you to recline about 350 times before the pack needs to be recharged, allowing customers the ability to float the sofa or recliner anywhere in the room. Their reclining furniture can also be matched to the décor of any room. Power furniture comes in a wide range of styles from traditional to a more contemporary line from Palliser Furniture offered in an extensive variety of custom order fabrics, leathers, and colours. To feel the power, visit their new power furniture gallery at the end of November at Dufresne’s Ellice Ave showroom location.

“At this point, we ask, ‘can I help you solve some problems?’ And then we ask them to sit in a power recliner to experience firsthand all the ease and benefits of power,” he explains. With a touch of a button, loungers can create infinite positions by being able to stop the footrest

at any level - up or down - totally eliminating the struggle to close the footrest. Ideal for an aging population, it means no more tough pulls and jerks, and for the tech-savvy lover, a gadget that’s both functional and comfortable.
