the agenda It’s finally snowing outside – big fat fluffy snowflakes – the kind that really make you feel as though Christmas is right around the corner. At this time every year, I always promise myself that I will get the lights up and the outdoor holiday decorating done before the snow comes to stay. But no matter how good my intentions are, I seldom meet the deadline in that department. There’s nothing like freezing your fingers to the bone and battling with electrical cords that have become brittle with the cold when one waits too long to get the job done. That’s exactly why I’m going to tackle this task right after Style Manitoba’s holiday edition is out the door. It’s all about the younger children at our house, which is clearly reflected in our seasonal décor choices. Drawn by his faithful reindeer, Santa’s

sleigh will once again grace the front yard this winter, and again, the sidewalk will be flanked with colourful illuminated candy canes. Topping it all off will be the garland wrapped railing, and icicle lights dangling from the eaves, blinking out a cheerful holiday greeting to folks passing by. Indeed, decking the house in holiday style is all it takes to kick start my Christmas spirit. Speaking of seasonal spirit, Style’s winter edition includes plenty of it. In keeping with the yuletide theme, our perennially popular Holiday Gift Guide features a host of inspiring ideas, while Stepping Out with Style offers some great entertainment suggestions for the cold spell ahead. Among the performers one can take in this season is the incredibly talented Natalie MacMaster, who happens to grace our cover this issue. The Cape Breton fiddler and

international performer will be accompanied by the WSO for three concerts in December, and if her fiddling doesn’t get your toes tapping, then nothing will! On other fronts, the fabulous home featured in Open Concept is all about simple horizontal lines and high quality craftsmanship, while Generation Next is the story of an exceptional modern makeover for a ‘60s era home. Along with other inspiring design and décor ideas, and coverage on the latest condos, our winter issue is packed from stem to stern with good reading. Curl up and enjoy!

Open concept Thoughtful amenities, quality materials and expressive design define custom built home By Leigh Patterson Photography: Michael Roberts

Renowned American architect Frank Lloyd Wright himself would likely have approved of the simple, horizontal lines and high quality craftsmanship of this custom-built home by H. Albers Builders Ltd. With approximately 4,000 square feet of living space on the main and second levels alone, this spacious home located on the Red River in Van Hull Estates development is a model of unity in design and materials, inside and out. For well over four decades, company owner Heinz Albers has been taking his clients’ visions from on-paper concept to bricks-and-mortar reality, and this home is no exception. Albers worked with these homeowners’ architectural plans to build a home that fits their lifestyle and personal design tastes. The red brick façade complemented by a Tyndall stone front staircase and deep brown shingled roof displays an understated elegance with its subtle colouration – just enough to make it stand out, yet quietly coexist with the rest of the homes in the desirable south Winnipeg neighbourhood. Even the large insulated two-car garage featuring a Hormann door blends seamlessly into the rest of the exterior. Once inside, the home opens up into a lightfilled, beautifully designed interior. Gleaming warm tones of Brazilian cherry wood floors extend throughout the main level. A natural stone partition wall with a double-sided gas fireplace insert separates the casual living and dining room areas. A series of large metal-clad JELD-WEN windows extend the entire length of this river-facing side, affording incredible views and providing the picture perfect backdrop while relaxing or entertaining.

With 6,000 square feet of total living space, scale was key to this home’s successful interior. Arnold Tiessen of Interior Illusions achieved that balance by choosing a large leather sectional and accent chairs for the great room.

It’s a view also enjoyed from the state-ofthe-art kitchen, adjacent to the dining room. Here, high-end stainless steel appliances by Bosch and a Wolf gas range are sophisticated

The home comes beautifully aglow thanks to strategically placed ceiling potlights, in combination with a stunning dining room chandelier and suspended kitchen light fixtures by Super-Lite. At the centre of this home is a stunning staircase by Winder Woodworks. According to Albers, the sheer weight of the 2 ½-inch thick Brazilian cherry steps “was terrific,” but assembling the wood and glass open riser staircase was well worth the effort. Its simple, elegant design maintains the home’s inherent openness and light-filled atmosphere. Ascending the stairs to the second level leads to two bedrooms featuring 10-foot ceilings for additional volume. The spacious master bedroom accommodates a generous seating area, and two sets of double glass-panel doors lead to a huge walk-in closet and ensuite, respectively. Luxuriously appointed with more dark walnut cabinetry, heated tile floors, a wine cooler, freestanding tub, steam shower and stylish fixtures from The Ensuite, the master bathroom is the epitome of indulgence. The same attention to quality and details on the home’s main and second levels is found in the fully developed basement. Here, a suspended wood floor provides the foundation for a space made for entertaining, thanks to a

customized bar area. Dark stained cabinetry is consistent with the rest of the home, and backlit blue glass panels on the shelving above the bar add a retro vibe. Albers incorporated a leather floor at the foot of the bar – another unique detail desired by the homeowners. An additional bedroom and bathroom round out the basement area, which also houses a high efficiency furnace and HEPA air filtration system. Multiple potlights strategically placed in the ceilings of every room are like glittering jewels, adding the right hits of sparkle, drama, and of course, essential lighting where needed. Inside and out, the home is a reflection of Heinz Albers’ unwavering 45-year-long commitment to his custom build clients. Not only is it aesthetically attractive, elegant and distinctive, the home is also carefully constructed, using the most efficient materials and techniques available. “Design is very important to me and the quality – how the home looks and how it works.”

A custom bar area in the fully developed basement makes it the perfect space for entertaining. The stunning glass and Brazilian cherry wood central staircase by Winder Woodworks maintains the home’s open concept design. Modern plumbing fixtures by The Ensuite emulate the simple clean lines of the dark walnut cabinetry in the master bedroom’s ensuite.

About the Builder Heinz Albers knows how to build houses. A cabinetmaker by trade, Albers understands the importance of quality workmanship and he won’t accept anything less from himself or the people who work with him. This commitment to excellence has been in place ever since he built his first home on spec 45 years ago: 1,200-square-foot bungalow on Sumac Street in Westwood. Now, H. Albers Builders homes can be found in literally every corner of Winnipeg, including newer developments like Sage Creek, River Pointe and Assiniboine Landing. As owner of H. Albers Builders Ltd., Heinz Albers has earned a solid reputation as a builder with integrity – someone who cares and who offers personalized service from beginning to end. It’s a reputation earned through word-of-mouth referrals from clients who appreciate his honest, direct approach, not to mention his decades of building experience and knowledge. “I enjoy bringing people together – tradespeople, clients, developers – to make it happen,” Albers says. Whether the style is traditional or contemporary, H. Albers Builders homes all share similar characteristics: quality construction and aesthetically pleasing, well-designed spaces. Ultimately, they are homes where people can live conveniently, affordably and in style.

Your

Thoughts Great cover story in the fall issue of Style Manitoba! I really loved the unique mix of materials used in this home, from the raw concrete wall to the metal clad fireplace to the pine panelled ceiling with those awesome chandeliers. Add in the stone feature wall and rustic wood flooring and it’s truly an impressive space. And that’s just one room! I can’t believe that many surface changes can actually work in one area. The folks at Artista Homes certainly know how to bring something new to the market every year.

Every time you think a decorating trend has come and gone, it somehow resurfaces again. While paging through the fall edition of Style Manitoba, I noted with surprise that black bathroom fixtures found their way into Artista’s fabulous home design. The bathroom featured looks incredibly chic, and now I am left wondering if black fixtures are making a comeback. Anna Freemont, Winnipeg

Beautiful coverage in the Outdoor Living section of your last issue. There were many good products and landscaping ideas shown. I particularly liked how Easyrock product was used on the garage façade in the Ultimate Urban Oasis, creating a dramatic focal point for a wall that would otherwise look pretty boring. The pergola featured was also exceptional – definitely a nice touch cladding the wall in the same material. Needless to say, the pool side of the yard only adds to the beauty of this space - contemporary luxury at its finest. Jay Sigmor, Winnipeg

There really is something for everyone out there. Good coverage in both the Kitchen & Bath and Design & Décor sections too. Jane and I have done renovations to our bathroom and redecorated much of our home, thanks to the inspiring ideas found on the pages of Style Manitoba over the past number of years. When the fiddle plays, Cape Bretoners listen. But when Natalie MacMaster sets her bow in motion, the toe tapping and jigging comes from people all over the world who have come to see the Inverness County native as a leading ambassador of the Nova Scotia ceilidh or kitchen party. And you don’t get to be Canada’s queen of the reel by sitting around and reading your press clippings. MacMaster got where she is through a lot of hard work that is a characteristic trait of a people who grew up in the hard scrabble mills and mines of the region. Along the way, her work has earned her a massive fan base as well as an Order of Canada, a Juno for best instrumental album, a Grammy award, eight Canadian country music awards and 10 East Coast music awards, not to mention an honorary doctorate. Today she is busier still. There is the touring, the recording, and the countless hours of practice that have made her a household name in Canadian and world music. There is also a rich family life that has Natalie and her husband (and musical colleague) Donnell Leahy parenting five children under 10 years old. Then there is the family’s working beef and cattle operation. To make matters even more time compressed, she homeschools her children and takes them on the road with the band. For some this might seem daunting, but not for MacMaster, who graduated with a degree in Education in1997. She takes it all in stride with a characteristic easygoing attitude that seems at odds with the wild abandon of her fiddle music and the hectic work / life schedule. This December, MacMaster flies into Winnipeg to bring her unique style and Celtic charm to the Air Canada POPS series of concerts with the WSO (Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra) under the baton of conductor Julian Pellicano. Slated for two evening shows December 13th and 14th, and a matinee on Sunday the 15th, her performances promise to electrify. “I really look forward to playing the gigs with the symphony. We have a new show, great arrangements, and there is also something about being in a room with so many talented players and the refinement of a full orchestra,” she says about the coming dates of Cape Breton inspired melodies at the Centennial Concert Hall. “I love coming back to Winnipeg. I have very fond memories of the Folk Festival. I played there in the ‘90s and remember the experience as one where there was no expectation, and I felt free to push the boundaries in a comfortable environment. I had never been out west before and the experience was one that taught me how special the area and people are. The show with the WSO is an opportunity for me to reconnect with Winnipeg and prairie audiences.” With her touring, MacMaster is supporting a catalogue of 10 albums that she and a wealth of collaborators have created over a career that

Queen of the Reel spans some 27 years. Indeed, MacMaster has played with the best and greatest names in music, and is just as at home hammering tunes with the Chieftains or Carlos Santana as with her neighbours on her front porch. This summer she took to the stage with the Masters of the Fiddle Shows in the US, and made a few appearances in Europe, such as the 2013 Irish Festival in Dublin. This fall saw her sell dates in Edmonton, Thunder Bay and Winnipeg with the symphonies in those cities. “We’re working on a new CD now,” she shares, noting that the album promises to have several songs that offer fresh directions. “There will be a couple of Cape Breton medleys that are strictly

from me, and people can look for some new jigs. I’ll be playing with Tom Edie from Scotland and Mac Morin will play piano. These guys are huge talents and a lot of fun.” Yes, MacMaster’s dance card is pretty full. In fact, I’d be surprised if she has a spare 20 minutes to read her press clippings. It’s a lot of work juggling the responsibilities of family with the feats of an international music career that has seen her amass multiple gold albums. But she does it, and in the process, brings the music of Cape Breton and Nova Scotia – the music she loves – to the hearts of Canadians and to the world.

Delectable Dining By Ian Mozdzen | Photography: John Johnston

Tower of Cooking “There’s never a dull moment here,” assures Keith Müller, Dean of Red River College’s School of Hospitality and Culinary Arts. No mistaking that. A maze of marbled hallways, stairs, and open passages connect a tower’s worth of state-of-the-art learning spaces: stainless steel kitchens, modern alcohol mixology and baking labs, immense outdoor patios, a bustling cafeteria, and even an espresso parlour. Then tack on floors and floors of student residences. And remember - all 10 floors of it are blessed with million dollar views of Winnipeg’s historic downtown. Hold on to your white chef ’s toque! Welcome to Winnipeg’s newest destination -- Red River College’s Paterson GlobalFoods Institute. In the wake of its famous Exchange District renovation - the Roblin Centre on Princess Street - the college has moved its culinary arts school from basement level training facilities on Notre Dame Avenue to the stunningly repurposed 1904 Union Bank Tower on Main Street near the iconic intersection with Portage Avenue. The lively energy of the downtown shift in the midst of the college’s 75th anniversary is almost palpable; an energy that recalls the inspired industry that first spurred the city over a century ago. Enter Jane’s Restaurant. Named in tribute after Jane Paterson, mother of Andrew Paterson, a leading supporter of the food institute, Jane’s Restaurant offers five-star dining served up by dedicated gastronomes on the cusp of the professional world. Housed ornately in the building’s grand bank hall, the kitchen and dining room may indeed be a classroom, but just glance at the menu, and you’ll marvel that learning could sound so good. For lunch? Expect mains like Walleye tacos or Zucchini & Artichoke Tart; while for dessert, the cookie crusted Coconut Cream with strawberry confit & fromage blanc ice cream sounds divine. And all the stops are pulled for white tablecloth evening dining: Appetizers include herb-crusted Bison Carpaccio with tomato chutney; and entrées tempt with maple-brined & bacon-wrapped Roasted Manitoba Pork Tenderloin with beetroot risotto.

To wash it down? A classic cocktail. Pull any recipe from a hat - it’s guaranteed to be expertly mixed. Or perhaps fine wine? Get your vintage opened and poured flawlessly. “We deliver industry-ready professionals,” the Dean, Keith Müller confirms. “The kitchen’s in the classroom and the classroom’s in the kitchen ... everyday is a test day.” The philosophy behind Jane’s Restaurant? Integrated Learning. “In North America everything is segmented,” Keith explains. “Typically, students have demonstrations and labs just for each other, but here we’ve incorporated the whole gamut, including the public. It’s industry style - real life.” Placed in Jane’s unique environment, students not only practice their developing skills and get acquainted with new ones, but they also gain an appreciation for all the efforts that go into creating stellar dining experiences. And thanks to a tri-annual student intake system, Red River College is continually buttering up new personnel for Jane’s Restaurant and industry beyond. But the newbie gourmet classwork isn’t just tossed away. What’s cooked up in the kitchen classrooms above gets plated in the Culinary Exchange below. Everything from breads to burritos to biscotti is primed to be enjoyed on the spot and to go. Short order items are available here, too, in addition to exotics from the global kitchen, like tandoori, Italian-style pizza, and even fresh Polish sausage. Maybe you’re tempted to try your own hand at culinary art? Red River’s Continuing Education “Culinary Adventure Series” program lets you indulge in scrumptious global eating with expert training! Upcoming meals include Japanese (February) and Argentinian (March). And for youth, special after-school style programs thoughtfully connect kids to the food they eat. For more information about Jane’s Restaurant, make a reservation, or gain access to Red River College’s site. Visit the website at: janesrestaurant.ca

The Little Café that Could There’s a little gem at the corner of Banning & Portage: Café Ce Soir. Thanks to neighbourhood thumbs-up, this unique French pastry café is nearing its first anniversary. Helmed by intrepid chef / owner Cam Tran, Café Ce Soir is certainly “the little cafe that could.” Food is foraged as locally as possible, everything’s made from scratch, and there’s always something new to try. And it all takes place in a charming retro-style “diner” space - complete with an open kitchen and intimate tables that give a spectacular view of zippy Portage Avenue. What’s the house got by the glass tonight? Smiling, Cam promptly responds: “Two reds, Shiraz and Cabernet Merlot; and two whites, Pinot Grigio and Chardonnay.” Easy enough: Merlot and Pinot. :-) Classically blended Cabernet Merlot is an oaky splash of juicy cherry and spice. Pinot Grigio blossoms lemon and apple. A surprise amuse bouche gets tabled! Jalapeno Havarti & cucumber on fresh baguette. Yum!

Where every bead is a gem. GEMSTONES BEADS, PEARLS FINDINGS SWAROVSKI ELEMENTS™

That said, the menu carefully coordinates a world of tastes. Spring Rolls are zesty with roasted pepper aioli, Jumbo Frog Legs jump with thyme sour cream, and Cheese Platters get loaded with local selections. We go for the feature appetizer: deep fried wonton dumpling filled with pumpkin cream cheese and dipped in Dijon mayo. These golden bundles bite like hot pumpkin mini-cheesecake. Delicious! Gulp. And we’ve never eaten crispier greens than those in the Green Salad. With Waldorf charm, this toss of local organic strawberries, raisins, sweet dollops of cranberry goat cheese, and brittle-like caramelized pecans is amazingly textured and satisfying.

PARTIES & WORKSHOPS HEIRLOOM RE-DESIGN WEDDING JEWELRY

The Sandwich Blue proves you can’t mess with success. Cam’s most popular creation is an open-faced sandwich of shaved smoked chicken, blue cheese, and poached pear accented with Dijon Mayo.

Now a heavy hitter! Nouveau Boeuf Bourguignon du Nord! This big stewy bowl steeps hearty chunks of beef tenderloin in savoury red wine sauce with plump mushrooms and pearly onion. Baguette sops up the jus. From the assorted pastry case: a rosemary ... what? ... yes ... Rosemary Pineapple Tart! Originally an experiment with a chicken sandwich, this mellow creation emerges triumphant as dessert. Pure pineapple is sweetly layered atop burnt buttery crust and infused with Rosemary. Wow! Espressos are lovingly pulled here, too!

Manitoba 4 Manhattan New York City’s Carnegie Hall is one of the most grandly beautiful and historic music halls in the world. For over a century, the world’s greatest artists - including Gustav Mahler, Maria Callas, Liza Minnelli, and Bob Dylan have all made their mark here. Indeed, appearance at Carnegie is synonymous with the pinnacle of musical achievement. The Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra has a date with music history: May 8, 2014, the WSO will be added to this stellar Carnegie line-up. That’s right: It’s time to take Manhattan! The WSO will be participating in the fourth and final installment of S4M (“Spring for Music”), a celebration of imagination and boldness in orchestra that runs May 5-10. Under the direction of Alexander Mickelthwate, some of our nation’s most uniquely gifted musicians will take to Carnegie’s iconic stage. And since S4M calls for

experimentation and risk, so the WSO’s program of New York premieres fittingly takes us to the very edges of sound. Originally created for the Kronos Quartet, 13 Inuit Throat Song Games (2009) by composer / flutist Derek Charke sharply offers up the sonic side of the Northern experience. Acclaimed throat singer Tanya Tagaq will contribute her uncanny vocal work. To up the ante? The unearthly height attained in R. Murray Schafer’s Symphony No. 1. As Canada’s preeminent composer, Schafer is not only genre-defying but has become an icon in the evolution of music.

world-renowned percussionist Dame Evelyn Glennie. Want to join the WSO in making music history?

Rounding out the program is WSO Composer-In-Residence, Vincent Ho, who is among this generation’s most outstanding composers. Ho’s work, The Shaman: Concerto for Percussion and Orchestra (2011), explores expressiveness and intricate texture; it also features

Can’t go but still want to pitch in? The Adopt-A-Musician donation program helps to make the Carnegie Hall dream a reality for WSO musicians. And just giving has its perks, too. Anyone who adopts a musician will be entered to win a pair of tickets to anywhere Air Canada flies!

In a separate bowl, whisk together eggs and sugars. Whisk in oil, then molasses mixture. Add to flour mixture and whisk just until combined. Stir in fresh ginger. Cool cake in pan on rack on countertop until completely cooled. Gently invert onto serving plate. Serve with warm or cold lemon sauce. Makes 10 – 12 servings. Tip: This gingerbread cake is better if made a day ahead. Also freezes well. Lemon Sauce 1 cup (250 mL) sugar ½ cup (125 mL) butter, room temperature ¼ cup (50 mL) water 1 egg, beaten 2 tbsp (30 mL) lemon juice 1 tbsp (15 mL) grated lemon peel Using a medium-sized sauce pan, combine ingredients and mix well. Desert Kaleidoscope

It’s winter. The cold is bitter. You only have five days to get away. Where can you go for some heat and guaranteed good weather? Land of the eternal sunshine, Palm Springs is more than a golfing destination for retirees. Spa holiday, outdoor adventure, architecture tour, shopping spree – these are some of the many offerings in this desert oasis, accessible via direct flight twice a week on WestJet from December 8 to February 6.

Spa Holiday Time for some relaxation? Itching to exfoliate that dry winter skin? There’s a reason this town is named Palm Springs. At the Spa Resort Casino, the winter-weary can bathe in the warmth of therapeutic mineral waters discovered by the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians, who still run this full service facility. Along with the healing “Taking of the Waters,” enjoy a steam, sauna, eucalyptus inhalation or a soothing visit to the tranquility room after a Swedish massage. Retire to the Parker, where you can choose between a one-bedroom free standing villa with private patio or a poolside room at the estate, both on grounds lush with bougainvillea, orange groves and palm trees. Gene Autry once lived here and you can even rent his two-bedroom bungalow. But no need to use the kitchen that comes with it. The gourmet comfort food at Norma’s diner vies with

the spectacular sunrise over the mountains for best surprise. Equally unexpected is the lavishness of the on-site “PSYC” spa. The luxurious blue and white décor features a nautical theme that extends to the cabana-style daybeds around the pool. Partake in a game of tennis or a complimentary weekend yoga class, and finish the day with a seaweed wrap.

Outdoor Adventure For a more active holiday, head for the hills – and the canyons. More than 160 km of trails wind along rippling streams, ancient palm groves and towering rock walls in the Indian and Taquitz Canyonlands, a 10-minute drive southwest of the city. Desert hues deepen as the sun moves across the sky, bringing out the warm ochres and terra cottas of the land. At sunset the sky turns pink and purple over the mountains. An interpretive two-kilometre hike, guided by one of the rangers at the Agua Caliente Indian Reservation, is a perfect introduction to the history and ecology of the Indian Canyons. Remains of their ancestral Cahuilla society, such as rock art, house pits, reservoirs and food preparation areas can be seen from the trails. Ten minutes to the northeast of Palm Springs, a completely different ecosystem awaits. A rotating aerial tramway delivers majestic views as it whisks four kilometres up the mountain to Mt. San Jacinto State Park. Be sure to bring a coat to hike the 85 kilometres of trails in this refreshing alpine terrain. There are several primitive campgrounds in the park, but for a much more comfortable home base, consider renting one of several vacation homes nestled in the hills around the city.

Architectural Tour In this town, it is possible to rent a home from every era and any design. But consider one genre above the rest. Distinctive clean lines, post and beam construction, indoor/outdoor themes, ample windows and open interiors are the hallmark of mid-century modern architecture and Palm Springs is the mecca of this influential style. The Palm Springs Visitor Centre – a revamped gas station designed by architect Robert Frey in the 1960s – is a good starting point for exploring the many midcentury modern homes and commercial buildings. Available by appointment, Robert Imber of Palm Springs Modern Tours offers an in-depth

exploration of these architectural gems, built between the 1920s and 1960s. Twin Palms, Frank Sinatra’s former home in Palm Springs, is a fine example of mid-century modern. (Because they were once required to stay no more than an hour’s drive from Hollywood during filming, many actors had vacation homes here.) An open plan incorporating glass, concrete, stone and steel characterizes the interior, while huge retractable windows allow seamless access between the living room and pool area. Comfortable for eight, the four-bedroom, seven-bathroom vacation home is available for rent – fully furnished. The only thing that is missing is the old Jack Daniels flag that Sinatra was known to hoist every day at five p.m. to announce happy hour. Across town, another celebrity’s mid-century modern icon graces the desert landscape of the Coachella Valley. Built in 1966 by Walter Annenberg, the publisher of Seventeen magazine and TV Guide, the 25,000-square-foot Sunnylands Estate was designed by architect A. Quincy Jones. Later, after serving as ambassador to Great Britain, Annenberg transformed the estate into a high level retreat, welcoming such game changers as Ronald Reagan and Mikhail Gorbachev. Today, visitors to the Centre can enjoy a nine-acre desert garden; the Annenberg’s Impressionist art collection; and a renovated interior that features furnishing by Michael Smith, interior designer for the Obama White House.

Shopping Spree

After you have settled in, head for the city’s Uptown Design District, with two dozen galleries and boutiques running along North Palm Canyon Drive. Renowned designer Trina Turk has two shops on this stretch, the “Residential” featuring home décor and the “Boutique” for men’s and women’s fashion. The district also includes several vintage shops featuring mid-century modern furniture and accessories. A choice of 15 eclectic restaurants sprinkled throughout the district ensures you won’t run on empty before locating that fabulous find. Whether you fill your days with shopping, midmodern architecture, hiking or tennis, in Palm Springs, you can rely on one important constant: warm weather and bright sunshine. When you only have time for a brief escape from winter, there is no ingredient more essential for a successful holiday.

Designers love Palm Springs, and nowhere is that more evident than at the Viceroy Citron, the perfect launching pad for some fashion-forward shopping. Using modern styling and a fresh colour palette, Kelly Wearstler led the 2001 redesign of this 67-room luxury retreat, frequented by such notables as Anne Hathaway, Miley Cyrus and Matthew McConaughey. Three distinct courtyard settings encompass intimate rooms, expansive suites, and private villas with full parlors, fireplaces, and kitchens.

When planning a look for your next Christmas event, think vintage. Leticia set Jessica’s hair with a finger wave, and a pin curl setting technique with the rest to achieve this soft, voluminous, wavy finish with a vintage vibe. To give her more hair, extensions were added that were coloured to match. Jessica’s colour is a mix of dark brown, black and a deep eggplant using Aveda full spectrum colouring. For make-up, Robyn focused on Jessica’s eyes, creating a bold and smoky look finished off with false lashes for added lash length and a touch of drama. Her lips are more subtle in a soft nude, allowing her eyes to stand out. To get your own vintage vibe, book Leticia and Robyn for your next party! Real or Synthetic Fur Sure... Warm up this winter with the luxurious look of spice tones. Emily’s hair was coloured with a golden saffron glaze to enhance her butter cream skin. For the style, ringlet curls the ends of hair only with an iron and brush out wide to get that ‘40s glamour inspiration. Play up the makeup with ever so popular strip lashes, and an always-stylish red lipstick. Keeping it vintage this season means you can bring out your cozy minks and make some tracks to your next holiday party. – The Technology of Wigs

There are many reasons one might buy a wig, whether it’s illness, injury, or just to get a fabulous new look. When shopping for a wig, one of the main choices is will it be real hair or synthetic? There are pros and cons for both options. Wigs made from real hair offer a realistic texture, and can be styled, coloured and maintained like natural hair. However, they do easily lose shape and require frequent styling, there are typically less colours available, and are more expensive than synthetic wigs. Human hair wigs are a good choice for those who want to keep them for more than six months and plan on primarily wearing that style. They are great for people who want the look and feel of natural hair, and enjoy styling their hair in multiple hairdos. Alternatively, synthetic wigs can look similar to human hair, but maintain their original styling much longer and are usually more durable. Although less expensive, some synthetic wigs may not have natural looking texture, they tolerate little or no heat styling and can’t be dyed. However, they are a great option for those who don’t want to maintain and style a wig on a regular basis. Synthetic wigs are not only affordable, but they are also available in a great variety of colours and styles. When it comes to choosing a wig, it’s wise to consult with a professional like Evelyn Valcourt, who will help you select the one that’s right for you. (Hamish Hamilton) by Joseph Boyden Award-winning writer Joseph Boyden takes us back to the early days of Canadian history, the late 16th Century in fact, with his third novel. A Huron warrior and leader kidnaps an Iroquois girl to replace his lost daughter, continuing a cycle of attack and reprisal. Meanwhile, a priest from New France comes looking for converts. Through their interwoven stories, we see the misunderstandings, suspicions, and trust that form the basis of our country. Epic storytelling.

The Strength of Bone (Biblioasis) by Lucie Wilk

Leaving behind a personal tragedy back home, a Canadian doctor takes a job at a hospital in Malawi. With the help of a local nurse, he does his best to treat malaria, tuberculosis, and HIV, learning not only about sickness and health in Africa, but also the limits of good intentions, as doctor and nurse each learn what the other has lost. Lucie Wilk is an M.D. as well as a writer, and this, her debut novel, is a gripping, moving story about hopelessness and friendship, strength and luck.

Jim Nason shows you can’t always get want you want, and you’re not always satisfied with what you get in his new novel, a modern-day Greek tragedy. Marco Morelli, a filmmaker with a successful relationship and a love of heights, should be looking forward to a European holiday and a climb up Mt. Olympus with his partner. But getting a share of happiness and holding on to it are two different things in this sharp and intimate story about everyday myths and modern love.

Rain on a Distant Roof (Signature) by Vanessa Farnsworth

Vanessa Farnsworth made a routine trip to the dentist. Suddenly, her life fell apart as she experienced debilitating pain, rollercoaster fevers, and blackouts. Lyme disease is a public health crisis in the making, and it’s spreading throughout Canada, including Manitoba. Farnsworth has written both a well-researched study of a frequently misunderstood disease, and a harrowing journal of a devastating illness and a disastrously unresponsive public health system.

STEREO Reviewed by Randal McIlroy Donald Fagen Sunken Condos (Reprise/Warner) Title of the year, so far, and the music would take some beating not to follow. Donald Fagen is rock’s most convincing hipster, but the Steely Dan man’s style reaches back musically before rock to Duke Ellington, with a small but expansive horn ensemble draping elegance behind the spiky guitar and cool keyboards. He’s noticing more than a few grey hairs at 65, and “Slinky Thing” and “The New Breed” nod to the young competitors who noticed them first, but the randy wit hasn’t dulled. Suffice to say when he sings, “It’s Monkey Time – 24/7” in “Planet D’Rhonda” he isn’t thinking about Jane Goodall.

Richard Thompson Electric (New West Records) Guitar solos are worth hearing when they’re played by Richard Thompson, winding as they do through Indian raga drones, Middle Eastern scales, Scottish pipe tunes and the man’s bountiful imagination. The man who electrified British folk tradition in Fairport Convention has absorbed most of its colours and concerns in the process. The brave melody of “Sally B” could stretch hundreds of years back to the yearning of fabled sailors, but there’s no moss on that keening guitar break. Electric is centered on guitar, bass and drums, opening room for Thompson to say much on the quick, but the uncomplicated setting also promotes a songwriter of tenderness as much as the signature gallows humour; “My Enemy,” with its pretty waltz chorus, has the two at once. Plump for the deluxe edition, which adds a well-stocked second disc.

OMD English Electric (BMG) A hall of mirrors may be the most productive spot for reflection. For their second set since returning to action, OMD’s Andy McCluskey and Paul Humphries perfect their signature mix of melody and technology, with lovely synthetic choirs gracing the reliable pulse and chatter of the machines, but there are also elements of the experimentation they always favoured, from a sampled public service announcement (from China) to the clever weave of an old track from jazz singer Abbey Lincoln. Nostalgia hasn’t dulled them yet.

Oh Christmas Tree From traditional red and greens, to contemporary colours, a Christmas tree is an outward expression of love for the most wonderful time of the year.

recently returned from a trip to the Napa Valley, she adorned this display with purples, deep greens, and ambers for a full body effect.

Known for their stunning summertime offerings, St. Mary’s Nursery & Garden Centre explodes into the holiday season with a collage of colour and Christmas inspiration with their holiday gift shop and lavish Christmas tree vignettes that inspire both whimsy and warmth.

The holidays bring out the child in everyone, but there’s a dedicated department at St Mary’s that is actually just for kids. Vibrant coloured trees featuring themes from hockey to sock monkeys work well for playrooms, while baby trees – an up-and-coming trend in blues or pinks – pair with baby’s first Christmas, or as a stunning nursery accent.

While scouting for ideas and the perfect products begin a year in advance, Carla Hrycyna and her team begin to assemble their anticipated displays of over 35 themed Christmas trees in July. “The staff is amazing. What begins as a collage of boxes moves into a large colourful mess, and then transitions into these stunning displays,” she beams. “One day when the staff was working on the trees, I overheard these two customers gasp ‘they’re starting.’ People anticipate these displays.” This year customers certainly won’t be disappointed. Feature pieces at the front of the store focus on the fall / winter trend of black, white, and silver. From glittering black ornaments, to pure white, to silver layers, these trees complement today’s contemporary gray décor and stainless steel accents. Looking for something that really pops? Bright, tropical coloured trees with fanciful birds bring a little heat to the winter weather, while the under the sea tree with capiz shells and fish takes you ocean-side. Travelling certainly inspired one of Hrycyna’s favourite trees - the Tuscany wine theme. Having

Birds of Paradise

Whatever rooms you’re designing for, there’s something for everyone to be inspired by. “It’s great that people can come in and take some ideas from professionals,” says Hrycyna, adding customers can purchase items off the tree, or even take home the whole vignette. “While traditional style trees still stand strong, people can also create trees that match the feel of their home.” St. Mary’s holiday gift shop also offers those extra details that make a home come alive this season with ornaments, accents, and other holiday gifts that would be perfect to put under the tree.

Elegant, and understated these silver metal sculptures create a crisp and clean-lined Christmas.

And, after you’ve found your tree’s perfect make-up, enjoy a meet and greet with Santa and Mrs. Claus, a sleigh ride, and warm bonfire December 1 and 8, 12:30-3:30. ‘Tis Better to Give These great holidays finds are sure to make their way on to everyone’s list. Four Season Favourite Krevco Lifestyles offers a year-round experience with hot tubs, swim spas, fitness equipment, and fireplaces. With their ever expanding exclusive product offerings, Krevco Lifestyles keeps customers coming back all year long for their “gotta have” items, including the best in fitness equipment, fireplaces, swim spas, and of course, hot tubs and pools. Certainly when the temperature drops, people’s thoughts turn towards warmer things. Fireplaces bring that much needed cozy atmosphere when the snow flies, and Krevco’s Embers Fireplace division has the latest in wood, gas, electric, pellet and propane models, all of which are above industry standard for efficiency and burn.

you walk into the store, you can be confident you’re going to see the best and newest trends.” The same can be said for the company’s Flaman Fitness division, which seeks to bring in the latest in home gym equipment. Carson, who used to sell Bowflex products, says fitness is such a part of his makeup that he wanted to bring the top Canadian retailer in fitness to the store. “Our number one growth area is fitness,” he states. “There is such a health movement going on. People want to reverse aging and stay in shape, because if you don’t move it, you lose it. So we have a partner that’s number one in fitness.”

This attention to what’s hot in the fireplace industry in terms of safety, design and style comes with having the best staff in the business.

Along with trusted brand names such as Nautilus, Schwinn, and Freemotion, Krevco has the exclusive rights in Manitoba and northwestern Ontario to the “as seen on TV” Bowflex TreadClimber, the hottest product in the fitness world.

“Within our Embers Fireplace division we have leaders in design, research, installation and sales,” states Don Carson, president and CEO of Krevco. “Our experts work closely with the manufacturers to bring in the newest trends, as well as the highest in efficiency. Many of our products are six to eight months ahead of the rest of other company’s offerings. Whenever

“It’s basically a three-in-one fitness machine: an elliptical, treadmill and stepper all in one. Twenty minutes a day on this is like doing an hour of work on a treadmill, so it speeds up your workout,” he states. “We work directly with the best in fitness equipment to find what’s new. If you’re looking to get fit, you need to come in and take a look.”

By Carly Peters Photography Darcy Finlay As the company celebrates its seventh consecutive Consumer Choice Award for being the best pool builder and hot tub retailer, Krevco is keeping the motion moving forward with their swim spa division. Along with their consumer recognition, the company received their third APEX Award from Master Spas, an honour only given to a handful of retailers in the world. Krevco is so passionate about the products, staff are sent to the Master Spa factory for training and re-educating to ensure when they return to the retail level they know all the benefits to each product, and can bring back the latest in designs. “We are always refocusing on swim spas,” states Carson. “Unlike a pool you can use it 12 months a year because they are fully insulated for our climate. That’s exciting.” Carson believes in the swim spa experience so much he has plans for a stand-alone store that will feature their top brands, including Michael Phelps Signature Swim Spas, designed by Michael Phelps and his coach Bob Bowman for both physical and therapeutic purposes. Whether it’s the hottest fireplace, trendy TreadClimbers, or signature spas, Krevco Lifestyles is the year-round “gotta have it” store.

Dynamic Real Estate

Winnipeg designer Yaron Walter is blending the traditional elements of mature neighbourhoods with the excitement of fresh thinking. The result is ALTRO off Corydon, a condominium project that will see at least 15 inspired new properties built in the Corydon Avenue and Osborne Village areas over the next two years. With this project, Yaron and his team from Studio Walter / Walter International Inc. have focused on open interior spaces, high end finishes, and an abundance of glazing in designs that create a contemporary contrast to the traditional prairie city streetscape. When it comes to innovation the company has a long history. Yaron’s father Ernie, who heads up Studio Walter as lead architect, started the process some 20 years ago. At that time, the firm made an appearance with innovative designs such as the reconsidered Fred’s Grocery, where they turned a convenience store on the corner of Warsaw and Cockburn into a multiunit residence. This was the first project that Ernie and Yaron collaborated on together, both in terms of design and the actual hands-on labour. Distinctive among Studio Walter’s designs have been the modern facades and fresh treatments to existing properties. Winnipeg was wowed with the approach that has been characterized as playful. Now, with Yaron as President of Walter International Inc. as well as Lead Designer and Director of Studio Walter, they have moved from inspired renovation to the new-build, in-fill market in the city’s most sought after mature neighbourhoods. Yaron realized that the demographics of the Corydon Avenue and Osborne Village communities were changing. “There were more younger, upwardly mobile urban professionals calling the area home. As I looked around, I also realized these were my neighbours, and I saw we shared many of the same goals and aspirations. We turned our design approach toward this market, and I looked into my life to see how we could offer properties that met this demographics’ unique needs,” says Walter, remarking that at age 38 with a young son and a busy design firm and architectural consultancy, he is really the poster boy for the Corydon / Osborne young urban pro. “I knew I was looking for a home where the design would help simplify my life, but would speak to my demand for quality in those things that surround me as well. Our goal with ALTRO has been to offer a condo where there is no need for upgrades. In fact, our basic offering typically exceeds the upgraded package of most condo developers.” He reports that all the ALTRO designs take his lifestyle into account. “I want to know that I can get my snowboard and bicycle into the condo. Can it accommodate my dog? Is the kitchen area ideal for entertaining when people

Decidedly Urban By Kelly Gray

come over? Does the condo offer lots of natural light and does it have an open, airy feel? These are all questions I would want to know if I was buying the property, and I think that these are also questions our buyers are asking.” Indeed, so positive has the response been to this thinking that the sales team is not only finding a lot of pre-construction sales based on Walter’s reputation, but are even selling properties to members of the architecture / design community who have applauded ALTRO’s approach. “First and foremost is the neighbourhood – my neighbourhood. In the Corydon / Osborne areas, the streets are lined with mature elms and classic residences; services like coffee shops and grocery stores are plentiful, and it’s easy to get to know your neighbours simply because there is more life at street level,” says Yaron, adding that people are often surprised by what Walter’s

designers achieve within the confines of the small footprint residential lots that may be only 25 feet wide. Certainly, condo buyers have been excited by the broad range of ALTRO’s interior attributes, with many featuring high ceilings, two-storey spaces, and open layouts within homes ranging from 900 to 1,800 square feet. Now, after 18 years and nearly 50 condo projects, Walter is ready for the next phase that may see them design, build and market as many as 120 condos over the next few years. “We have been successful by not underestimating the sophistication and needs of our target market. Projects like ALTRO really speak to the young urban professional who seeks a balance between the traditional aspects of mature neighbourhood living alongside contemporary flair.” winter 2013 | STYLE MANITOBA | 51

Tuxedo Attraction Location meets lifestyle at South Winnipeg’s Oxbow of Tuxedo Point, where natural beauty, shopping, entertainment and dining all intersect to create a new place to call home. On offer is a Sterling Lyon Parkway address that features both condo and rental options in what has been called one of the most exciting new housing opportunities to hit the city in years. Indeed, Tuxedo Point is generating considerable buzz with Oxbow Condos as well as The Spot on Sterling Lyon, a well-considered selection of rental apartments. Both sites enjoy a blended mix of retail and green space that combine to complement the well-designed properties. For example, Oxbow Condos offer 84 beautifully appointed units that feature 8 unique layouts with floor plans from 793 square feet to 1419 square feet. As well, the condos are of concrete construction, a big plus in terms of sound abatement and overall building durability. More, architects have utilized an eco-friendly design to help keep heating and cooling costs down and generate a smaller environmentalfootprint. Still, designs call for amenities such as heated indoor parking, something Winnipeggers have come to love given the challenges of our environment. There’s more. Oxbow Condos at Tuxedo Point have built-in luxury at no extra cost. For example, the design utilizes Kohler plumbing fixtures, engineered hardwood flooring and granite or Caesar Stone counters. Affordability is key with prices as low as $221,900 including GST. This pricing makes Oxbow of Tuxedo Point a perfect site for first time homebuyers, families and those looking for a more carefree lifestyle. Developed by Towers Realty Group, Oxbow at Tuxedo Point now offers a fully furnished display suite as well as presentation centre at 775 Sterling Lyon Parkway. Come see what the excitement is all about.

Generation Next

A unique partition wall houses a three-sided gas fireplace, viewable from the kitchen, dining and living room areas.

1960s era Charleswood home gets thoroughly modern makeover When parents trust a business enough to refer it to their own children, that’s high praise indeed. Such was the case for these homeowners, one of whom saw the results of a major Harwood Design Builders renovation at their mom and dad’s house. Like their parents, the couple was so impressed with Harwood’s work that when it came time to renovate their own home, they knew exactly where to turn.

Not much had changed in this Charleswood four-level-split since it was built in the 1960s. The new owners, a young couple, wanted to keep the strong contemporary bones already in place but desired a smartly designed interior, with functional and cutting-edge amenities more suited to their personal tastes. “This was a full house reno,” says Harwood Design Builders owner Wayne Sage. “It was completely gutted and redone. There is no remnant of what was there.” The whole home was re-engineered. “Once we removed some of the walls it provided the home with a renewed, open feeling,”

says Sage. “Everything we did after that was designed to keep that atmosphere and realize the clients’ vision for their home.” The kitchen is now a marvel of functionality and style. It owes its sleek sophistication in part to the natural stained bamboo cabinetry throughout from Jake Klassen’s Kitchen Gallery. “Bamboo is a sustainable, eco-friendly material that’s also clean and modern-looking,” Sage notes. The huge refrigerator/freezer was clad in the same bamboo as the rest of the cabinetry to maintain the streamlined look. The stainless steel coffee/cappuccino maker and stacked double ovens were winter 2013 | STYLE MANITOBA | 53

also built in for the same aesthetic and functional reasons. “This is an extremely well thought out kitchen,” Sage notes. “Everything, including the deep pot drawers for example, is designed with a purpose.” Even the marble tile on the partition wall has been book matched to flow perfectly in the direction of the horizontal wood grain found on the cabinets. White granite waterfall countertops along the wall and on the central island are another complementary design feature in this minimalist kitchen. Opaque white sliding panels on either side of the range hood hide the shelving behind while brightening the space. Use and interplay of light became extremely important once the home was opened up. Thanks to the addition or relocation of windows, the home’s interior enjoys plenty of natural light by day. The home is also beautifully illuminated in the evening hours by ceiling potlights, as well as under-cabinet and above-cabinet lighting and suspended fixtures by SuperLite. This includes the long, rectangular

white fixture above the kitchen island with ingenious light heads that move independently. One of the home’s most striking features is the multi-functional partition wall deliberately built to separate the kitchen from the rest of the main floor space. The open space above allows unimpeded light flow without detracting from the drama and volume of the cathedral ceiling. It houses a three-sided gas fireplace, which adds ambience and warmth to the kitchen, dining room and living room areas. The fireplace venting is cleverly concealed in a brushed stainless steel box that extends to the ceiling. A structural support beam is similarly clad above the partition wall, and alongside the fireplace unit. Instead of becoming annoying visual distractions, these become attractive architectural elements with Harwood’s expertise. “We helped the homeowner with some of the design on the fly,” Sage says. “Once you open up walls, you find things that require making adjustments and finding solutions that work.” The kitchen’s heated tile floors from The Floor Show give way to a combination of new and existing hardwoods that have been resanded and restained. The hardwoods continue to a second level via a simply stunning metal and glass stairway by Fort Rouge Glass. On this level, the Harwood team continued the bamboo cabinetry and marble tile found in the main floor kitchen into a delightful ensuite. Replete with double sinks, gleaming fixtures from Robinson Bath, plenty of storage and a glassed-in shower by Fort Rouge Glass, the space is the perfect combination of warmth, convenience and modernity. “Overall, this renovation project turned out spectacular,” Sage says.

This suspended white rectangular light fixture from Super-Lite features light heads that move independently. Built-in appliances, like the coffee/ cappuccino maker, maintain the linear, clean appearance in the kitchen. The same is true of the book-matched marble tile, which matches the direction of the wood grain on the surrounding cabinetry. The huge refrigerator is clad in the same bamboo as the cabinets to achieve a seamless look.

Given major renovation projects like these, it’s no wonder Harwood has enjoyed steady growth in word-of-mouth referrals that span generations. The Harwood Design Builders website is flooded with glowing testimonials from delighted clients. Sage attributes this reputation to his insistence on quality. As a “one-stop shop” general contractor that does nearly everything with in-house staff and a reliable network of suppliers, like Star Building Supplies, Harwood is known for its team approach. “We become our clients’ advocate,” Sage notes. “We go through a home and note any issue that might come up during the renovation. By being up front it helps the homeowner budget since there are no surprises later on. As well, we monitor the renovation budget while the house is being designed so we bring value to the design construct stage.” And if the homeowner has questions or concerns, they don’t need to deal with multiple sub contractors; Harwood is their only point of contact during the project. This helps take the stress out of the renovation experience. This client-centred approach combined with a standard of excellence set by Sage’s 30 years of experience, is applied to every type of project Harwood Design Builders undertakes.

Sage says that while client satisfaction is ultimately his biggest compliment, he is proud that his company’s leading-edge designs and quality construction have been recognized by the homebuilders industry at large. Harwood has garnered numerous local and national awards for its renovations from the Manitoba Home Builders’ Association and from the Canadian Home Builders’ Association. In much the same way he strives to help clients live healthier, happier, and joyful lives in their homes, Sage set up The Harwood Foundation to give back to the community. The Harwood Foundation supports smaller, local child-focused charities and causes. Homes, cottages, upgrades, additions, heritage restorations, complete renovations. Whatever your needs, your stage in life, and / or your style, Harwood can handle any design build project imaginable. “We work with people to understand first who they are, and secondly, how they want to live,” Sage says. “Then we make it happen.” The result? Beautiful, functional places to call home. www.harwoodbuilders.com

Super Soaker By Carly peters

Whether you are renovating your bathroom, or building within a tight space, you don’t have to sacrifice a super soak. Canadian-based Mirolin offers a solution that fits a standard size tub space, but offers ample bathing room. Envy, pictured here, features a deckless profile for a minimalist look, ultra spacious bathing well, sloped lumbar support, and can include luxury features such as air jets, and / or whirlpool options. This alcove bath fits into a standard 60-inch opening, so people don’t require any extra space to get the larger tub feeling. Looking for something a little more artistic? Freestanding tubs are making a splash with customers that have a little more room to enjoy a soak. Mirolin boasts different models in various sizes and styles, all offering a large bath well, and enduring quality, design and comfort. With an aging population, bathroom renovations may include replacing a standard tub and shower with something a little more accessible. Mirolin’s Free Living series offer tub / shower units with the same spacious bathing wells as their other options, but boast various heights, and grab bar styles to help the bather in and out of the tub, and maneuver better in the shower. Hydrotherapy upgrades, such as a whirlpool or jet air, can provide a solution to sore muscles. The series also features shower units that offer a four-inch threshold for easy entry and exit, as well as the option of including a seat and choice of drain placement. For a full accessible soak, Mirolin highlights the Porta, a walk-in tub unit that boasts seven adjustable jets, a five-function hand shower, and built-in Hygienic ozone sanitizer. For four decades, Mirolin has grown and evolved into a Canadian bath industry leader, manufacturing innovative and trendsetting acrylic tub and shower products. Kitchen & Bath Classics’ showroom features Envy and other quality Mirolin models on the floor so customers can come in and actually sit in the tub to ensure it’s the right fit for them.

Kitchen&Bath Hard Luck

Granite is a highly sought material for countertops, but all the benefits of the hard surface can be just as useful in a sink. With seven unique patents, SILGRANIT® is exclusive to BLANCO and the most durable sink material available today. Made from 80 percent natural granite, the sinks are scratch / chip resistant, so foods can be prepared or cut on the surface without leaving a mark, while hot pots will not burn, scorch, or mar the material. Granite is also nonporous, so items such as coffee or red wine poured into the sink will not stain, and it will not absorb odours or bacteria, making it a highly hygienic choice. With a wide range of models and styles to choose from, SILGRANIT® sinks offer both undermount and drop-in options with unique features to make kitchen work simple. The Precis Cascade shown here offers a large bowl for bulky items, and comes in several colours, including cinder - a warm charcoal grey. The brand offers matching faucets and accessories, such as cutting boards, colour matched strainers, and cap flow strainer covers, like the one in this sink. The stainless steel cap flow cover is an elegant way to hide unsightly food particles in the strainer and helps reduce splashing in the bowl. Granite models from this German line can be seen at Robinson Bath Centre’s showroom.

The elegant high-arc BLANCO CULINA faucet, paired with BLANCO PRECISION Farmhouse sink brings style and functionality together, creating a masterful kitchen experience.

Kitchen&Bath Clean & Cozy

Homebuilder, KDR Design Builders, wanted a modern look with clean lines in this Bridgwater Lakes home, but the neutral palette of taupes and whites and accents, such as the glass tile backsplash, also make this space warm and inviting. To keep with the clean, yet cozy ambience, Kitchen Craft chose a contemporary style thermofoil door in Chillagoe, which features a taupe/grey wood-graining pattern. Even with the large amount of cabinetry needed in the space, they blend seamlessly with the built-in appliances, which in turn flows with the bulkhead and walls. The focal point of the kitchen, which opens up to the dining and great room, is certainly the nine-by-six-foot island, which was constructed in a unique shape. “The L-shape island was purposely designed at a random angle of around 96 degrees, to give it an unexpected placement in the middle of the space,” states Joan Harder, design and sales consultant, Kitchen Craft. “The odd angle opens the island to the rest of the kitchen, creating just a bit more floor space in the middle.” It also provides ample space for cooking prep, an inviting same level counter overhang for entertaining, and deep pullout drawers constructed with tandem metal drawer sides with full extension soft-close hardware.

Heating Things Up

Fireplaces make for a cozy living room, but more and more people want to get that warm feeling in other areas of their homes. From master bedrooms to sitting rooms to bathrooms, new styles of gas fireplaces can fit into anyone’s home. Archgard’s new wall-mount gas fireplace, which only requires a depth of 8 1/4 inches, is ideal for tight spaces such as the bathroom as seen here. Classic Fireplaces’ has been carrying Archgard’s quality line-up of fireplaces for many years thanks to the brand’s realistic fire, decorative fronts, and dependability. No matter what the room, it seems linearstyle fireplaces are still hot. Many lines carried at Classic Fireplaces, such as Dimplex, Kingsman,Valor, and Napoleon, feature the lengthy design in black, or stainless steel fronts for a more modern look. But looks aren’t everything. When buying a fireplace for either your living room or another space in the home, clients must take into consideration the unit’s BTUs and the size of the room you’re looking to heat. Take into consideration your home’s overall heating demand, as well as the area where the fireplace will be installed, and select a unit that will match your needs. In a small room, a fireplace with a high output rating could be overpowering, causing overheating and discomfort rather than coziness.

Comforting Options

By Carly peters

The kitchen build or renovation is one of the most daunting tasks a homeowner faces. From choosing cabinet styles, to countertops, to hardware, the options are endless and so appears the stress. What customers need is a little comfort - Inspired Comfort. Inspired Comfort’s new 10,400-square-foot showroom has a certain “homey” feel when customers walk in, leading to a relaxed experience. “The idea was to make people comfortable when they come in to plan their kitchen or bath project,” says owner James Friesen. “We have full kitchens and vanities set up, as well as a section designated for customers to grab a coffee and plan out their project. This section consists of a couple of tables, a coffee centre, and all the elements needed for designing your kitchen. This area has samples doors, every countertop option available, as well as hardware. We realize that our business is about building relationships with our customers and know that kitchens are very detailed and should not be rushed.” A customer’s first point of order is to decide whether they are going to create their kitchen themselves, or if they require some assistance. Unlike most other showrooms, Inspired Comfort can offer both, and everything in between. “We wanted to hit every part of the market with this showroom, from fully custom, semicustom, to stock cabinets,” he states. At the front of the store, they offer a full design centre where staff can help with a floor-plan, advise on products, and eventually install cabinetry and countertops for new builds, or can connect customers with contractors who will take care of the renovation side.

At the back, Inspired Comfort offers stock cabinets for the brave do-it-yourselfer, which features upgraded options such as soft-close drawers at a standard price. With Inspired Comfort’s kitchen packages, backsplashes are also offered, allowing customers to complete a finished look in one shop. The company also features a vanity program where customers can come in and choose an in-stock vanity as well as a granite top with a built in sink, locally fabricated by Granite Mountain. Along with everyday great prices and products, the store will be offering monthly specials,

including December’s popular “Ugly Kitchen” contest for a chance to win $5,000 towards a new kitchen.

design&decor Bold & Beautiful

The beauty and elegance of crystal has graced lighting for centuries and will continue to do so for many to come. While the material is timeless, the design may change to suit trends. The Brilliant Collection from ET2 starts with large geometric forms including spheres and ovals. Large cages of chrome-plated metal adorned with multifaceted crystal jewelry add contemporary elegance to even the largest rooms. The brilliance of the xenon lamps reflects through the crystal, creating a spectrum of colour. A current trend in design today is bold and oversized scale, and the 15-light pendent seen here fits that mantra perfectly. They will become the focal point of any space. Therefore, when selecting pieces such as these, one should consider the whole design of the room to ensure that the rest of the space is kept simple, clean, and contemporary, as a bold fixture will dominate. Too many focal points in a room will confuse the eye. Another thing to consider is ceiling heights. Alison Demare of Robinson Lighting suggests a large globe pendent should be placed in a room with a ceiling height over 10 feet. Visit Robinson Lighting’s showroom for more sparkling examples of bold and beautiful light fixtures.

Cover Ups

Hardwood looks nice, but during Manitoba winters it can be a little chilly on the toes. Area rugs are the ideal and trendy solution to keeping a space warm and inviting, while still being stylish. “Area rugs have so many benefits,” states Tracy Fiorillo of Ken’s Carpets & Urban Home Style Centre. “With open concept rooms, they can help define a space; they make a hard surface more cozy. They just finish off a room and add personality. It’s like art on the floor.” While people’s taste in art differs, so too does their preference in rugs. Ken’s Carpets & Urban Home Style Centre offers a vast selection of textures, sizes, and colours to meet customer’s preferences. Fiorillo states textured shags seem to be on the “must-have” list, and feature everything from metallic threads, to multi-wool twists, to varied colours. When it comes to what a rug is made from, wool is a great option. It’s sustainable, sturdy, and a great investment, while polyester is also an ideal selection for homes. Both can range from $200 to $2,000 depending on the size and brand, but Ken’s Carpets & Urban Home Style Centre is hosting a buy one, get 1/2 off option so customers can get the warmth they want without the cold price.

design&decor Cutting Edge

Glass etching is a way to turn a piece of something see-through into something to look at. When Dan and Nancy Scrapneck came to MPD Glass & Vinyl Graphics, they had a rough idea of what they wanted on their doors but left the creative design to the company’s artisans, and one of MPD’s owners, Chris Kaleta. The focal point of the home, the front door, showcases a deep forest of pine trees that appear to have different depths. To achieve this illusion, Kaleta took two individual panels of glass and multi-stage sandblasted each piece so that when placed together the trees appear to be interwoven, and give the flat surface multiple dimensions. Another tree can be found etched into the client’s back patio doors, while a scene of wheat graces a different set. With this particular design, the customer wanted to be able to see out of the top while still achieving some sense of privacy. The lower half was created in the opposite fashion of the front door - the design appears in the clear glass, while the etching is what gives it the shape. Further examples of their work, which also includes room dividers, decorative glass films, mirrors, and glass backsplashes, can be seen at their showroom on the gallery monitor, or online at www.mpdglass.com

Making the Most of Space

The mudroom is one of the most important spaces in a home. Families start their mornings here getting on boots and backpacks. And at the end of the day, it’s a place to toss down bags and coats. Yet, many homeowners don’t give this essential room the attention it deserves in terms of space and design. This custom created mudroom is the perfect example of how a space that can become cluttered and unsightly is easily transformed into a functional, well-designed area. In this home, For Space Sake created a large floor-toceiling ivory wood cabinet featuring multiple levels for short coats, long coats, and shoe storage. The glass, which is tempered to look like raindrops, offers an open feel, yet still blurs the cabinet’s contents for a clean look. The team also added a set of wall hooks, and additional space for shoes (not pictured) within the large room. For Space Sake can create the ideal mudroom for any space and family. Custom cabinetry fronted by glass doors, laser cut doors, or solid wood can be designed to meet each customer’s organization needs, including different levels of shelving, drawers, and hanging rods. Clients can also select from a wide range of benches, lockers, additional accessories and hardware to complete the room’s function and look.
