MODERN, CUSTOM BUILT HOME PERFECT IN A TRADITIONAL SETTING

racing Winnipeg’s oldest, most prestigious residential streets are beautiful, traditional homes. Built decades ago, most of these homes have stood the test of time. Some have not. But in their place, new homes are emerging to breathe life and energy into established neighbourhoods. This is one such infill home that successfully bridges neighbourhood character and modern design.

Custom built by Trademark Homes, it’s clear from the outset that the design team has given great care and consideration to the location.

be there, nestled amongst the trees, rubbing shoulders with older style homes sharing the block.

“We saved all the healthy, mature trees on the property,” says Trademark Homes’ president Manni Dhaliwal. “We designed the home around the trees.”

The home’s natural assets outside can be enjoyed from the inside, thanks to an abundance of large, well-placed windows installed by Duxton Windows & Doors. The windows also let lots of daylight in, creating a delightful interplay with the muted industrial finishes used inside, starting at the front entrance.

The home’s linear architectural profile is the perfect complement to the surrounding landscape. It looks like it was always meant to

The entryway features a 12-foot-tall, black fiberglass door complemented by a floor-toceiling window (both from Duxton Windows & Doors). Heated concrete tiles in the foyer and throughout the main floor introduce a decidedly industrial vibe from the get-go.

Made for entertaining, the kitchen is ultramodern yet understated with its blend of sleek cabinetry from M Concept, stainless steel appliances and concrete flooring. Honed granite countertops with a matte finish reduce glare and adds a casual tone.

One enters the home through a 12-foot-tall black fiberglass door complemented by an adjacent floor-to-ceiling window. Heated concrete tiles in the foyer and throughout the main floor introduce a decidedly industrial vibe from the get-go. To the left of the foyer is a sunken formal dining room or home office, warmed by 7.5-inch-wide planks of engineered hardwood flooring. Straight ahead is a central, open concept kitchen replete with a wall of stainless steel Thermador appliances: a wine preservation column, refrigerator, freezer and convection oven. Flush with the countertop is a smooth induction cooktop with a fully usable cooking surface that heats up only where the pot is placed on it. It’s one of the many high tech features incorporated into this home.

The home’s natural assets outside can be enjoyed from the inside, thanks to an abundance of large, well-placed windows installed by Duxton Windows & Doors. Keeping clutter at bay while entertaining is a butler’s kitchen, where meals can be prepped and dishes washed – completely out of sight. There’s even a chef style gas range and hood. Tons of storage and clean lines even here is typical of the level of detail that goes into a Trademark Homes custom build. The design team deliberately designed the kitchen island to be standing room only to allow for easy traffic flow and to maintain visual continuity. With no seating area, storage is available around the island. In keeping with the linear feel is the black rectangular sink and handy stainless steel trough sink where ice, utensils and beverages can be kept close at hand – perfect for entertaining.

Yet, this ultramodern kitchen is understated. Trademark Homes’ designer Carmen Dhaliwal chose honed granite countertops with a matte finish to reduce glare and add a more casual tone. Off the kitchen is a laid-back lounge area complete with bar and lighted black cabinetry. Reclaimed red-brown brick used for a feature wall lends an aged, warm look to the space, keeping it from feeling sterile. A full main floor bathroom includes a unique floating wall shower stall open to both sides, as well as a slim trough sink. A bank of vertical fiberglass windows with motorized blinds extends along the rear of the main floor, which overlooks a covered patio and the backyard pool. This room and the entire home are wired for sound and light, and more. “This home is fully automated, so everything – temperature, lighting, sound, alarms, electronics – can be controlled from anywhere in the home, or in the world, with just a smartphone or tablet,” says Manni Dhaliwal. Rounding out the main floor highlights is its central focal point: a two-sided gas fireplace with a cor-ten steel surround that will age to a rusty-orange patina. Trademark Homes took their attention to detail and design one step further, literally. The staircase leading to the second floor looks like bamboo, but is made of compressed sheets of plywood. A wealth of space, storage and style continues upstairs. Here, there is a large laundry room with gleaming white porcelain tiles, light grey cabinetry and a large window. It elevates the mundane chore of doing laundry to a nearpleasurable experience. Three bedrooms come equipped with an Italian wardrobe and closets with sliding barn doors, and their own bathrooms. Trademark Homes has many reasons to celebrate this year. 2016 marks its 10th anniversary as a custom homebuilder. The company has branched out into the commercial market with several condo builds. And, most importantly, Trademark Homes has hundreds of satisfied clients, thanks to its ongoing commitment to creating positive relationships. Manni Dhaliwal and his professional team: Jon Bertie, Amitt Kumar, Carmen Dhaliwal and Greg Grewal, help make the homebuilding process as painless as possible by guiding clients at every step of the decision making process. “We encourage our clients to become part of their home by visiting the site as much as they like during the build,” says Dhaliwal. “And we’re always happy to educate them along the way, especially if they are a first-time homebuyer.” No matter the budget, the team is dedicated to creating an exceptional home environment for every client, and for every lifestyle. Trademark Homes has built a variety of single-family homes in both newer and established Winnipeg-area neighbourhoods. Each home is carefully and thoughtfully constructed to provide exceptional quality, value and comfort. Every home they build is registered with the New Home Warranty Program of Manitoba. More recently, the company has completed townhome condominiums in Waterford Green, and has more condo builds planned in the River Heights area. Guided by a vision based on high levels of integrity, craftsmanship and design, Trademark Homes continues to evolve, grow and innovate.

Will Your Retirement Security Be Threatened by an Unfunded Shortfall in Your Defined Benefit Pension Plan?

T

housands of pensioners have seen their retirement incomes reduced and millions more are seeing their benefits squeezed or threatened. For example, look at the defined benefit plans of U. S. Steel Canada (formerly Stelco) or Nortel, the once-mighty telecom firm that went bankrupt in 2009. Both groups of pensioners are still waiting to see what they will receive. One thing is for certain - the pensions they will receive will be smaller than originally promised. Shortfalls can occur because the employer didn’t put in enough money, because employees didn’t put in enough money, because investment earnings were lower than expected, because retirees are living longer than expected, because the inflation rate is higher than expected, or any combination of these factors. In other words, with defined benefit pension plans it’s really easy to get some projections made decades in the past wrong and end up with a shortfall. Who could have foreseen 30 years ago how low interest rates would be today? A high profile example of this issue was the recent threat of a postage service work stoppage this past summer. The major concern was that Canada Post wanted new employees to receive a defined contribution pension while existing

Plan needs to pay pension benefits, by making assumptions about future investment returns, future inflation rates, future increases in salaries, retirement ages, life expectancies and other factors.

workers retain the unaffordable defined benefit pension. The reported shortfall for Canada Post’s defined benefit pension as of the 1st quarter of 2016 was approximately $6.1 billion, up from about $3.4 billion only two years ago. With interest rates likely to remain low, the shortfall could continue to grow exponentially. Only in the province of New Brunswick does there seem to be an understanding and recognition that promises of retirement income are only as good as the savings that back them. New Brunswick now allows defined benefit pension plans to convert to shared-risk plans; this means that if projections show inadequate funds, benefits can fall. The actuaries provide a mathematical analysis of the financial condition of a pension plan. This report determines how much money the

When the actuary determines that current contribution levels combined with future investment income will be inadequate to provide the benefits promised by the Pension Plan, one of 4 things must happen: • Increase contributions • Increase investment returns which could increase risk • Delay the age at which unreduced benefits can be taken • Decrease benefits Members of defined benefit pension plans can no longer simply expect that the pension promised at age 60 or 65 on their annual pension statement is guaranteed to be there when they reach that age. It is more important than ever before in history to ensure that you understand your options as it relates to your pension entitlement.

ATTENTION MEMBERS OF DEFINED BENEFIT PENSION PLANS! Do you know if your pension plan has adequate funds to provide the pension benefits promised? Do you know how the lowest interest rates in history are affecting your pension entitlement? Do you understand what all your retirement options are regarding your pension entitlement and which one is best for you and your family? Most pension plans were designed decades ago when life expectancy was shorter and when interest rates were higher. Both of these things have changed significantly and have had a dramatic effect on your pension entitlement.

SWEET LOW DOWN BY CARLY PETERS

PHOTOGRAPHY: JENNIFER SQUIRES

Jess Rae Ayre, Amber Rose, and Michelle Anderson, collectively known as Winnipegbased folk/pop group Sweet Alibi, squish together on a backstage couch, trying to fit everyone in the frame of our FaceTime call. Soon the three ladies will be playing to a Saskatoon crowd as part of their cross-Canada tour with Jadea Kelly. But for now, we’re just trying to get the audio to work. Even when you can’t hear what’s being said, the chemistry of the trio is visually apparent comfortable conversation and smiles being had. Ayre and Anderson have been friends since high school, and met up with Rose while jamming over eight years ago. Loving each other’s sound, the ladies began singing together, and at the behest of their listeners, decided to form an official group. “We were going to go play an open mic show and thought we should probably make up a poster, but we didn’t have a name,” explains Rose, adding they asked for suggestions from friends. “Everyone just kept coming back with the word ‘sweet.’ But we felt like we needed something to balance that out, and came up with ’alibi.’ We felt it was the masculine to the sweet.” The group’s first album, a self-titled debut in 2011, was produced by Mitch Dorge, formerly

of the Crash Test Dummies, and sent them touring Canada, tightening up their writing skills, and perfecting their stage performance. As they gathered fans across the country and garnered more radio play, they embarked on a second album, We’ve Got To, in 2013. The record wasn’t defined by a genre, pulling elements of country, folk, pop, and even Motown into their textured harmonies. Perhaps what resonated with listeners the most were the group’s raw lyrics that pulled from themes such as addiction, cancer, and battling death. “We like to take struggles and turn them into songs,” explains Ayre, adding that the name of their third album, Walking in the Dark, comes from a song Rose wrote for her mother who had passed. But what might be one person’s darkness may be another’s light. Fans have told the trio that many of their songs have helped them through tumultuous times, and that it’s meant a lot to know they’re not alone. “That’s why we do it,” confides Anderson. Sweet Alibi has seen a lot of faces, spending more time on the road over the past five years than being home in Winnipeg. And, while sometimes tour life can be a little confining, they’ve learned a few skills along the way to help them cope.

“When we roll into a city we find the nearest thrift store,” says Rose, adding they actually do like to find off-stage experiences to do together to ensure it’s not all business all the time. “We’re a team of girls, it can be hard not to step on each other’s toes, but we’ve learned to realize when everyone needs their quiet time or space.” Back on stage, Sweet Alibi has built a reputation for both their stripped-down three-part harmony sets, as well as their toe-tapping musical performances that include some of Manitoba’s best backup musicians. All of these elements have culminated in several award nominations and wins, including a Canadian Folk Music award and Western Canadian Music awards. “Growing up I never won awards,” laughs Rose, admitting she didn’t even go to the first ceremony when they were nominated because she didn’t think they’d nab the honour. “Being appreciated feels good. Of course, it’s not why we do what we do; it’s just the cherry on top.” The call’s audio drops again, leaving just an image of all three ladies grinning at one another. That’s okay; the stage is calling.

hen it comes to music, Winnipeg is in an enviable position for a city of its size. We have extraordinary talent, we have appreciative audiences, and we have respect from performers the world over. Helping to earn this respect are events such as the incredible New Music Festival (NMF), a ‘must attend’ series that occurs in the dead of our frozen prairie winter to headline the city’s January / February cultural calendar. “It’s so unique. The Festival is a once a year exploration of the vibrancy of new works by the world’s leading contemporary composers,” says Alexander Mickelthwate, the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra (WSO) Music Director who conducts the 65 member ensemble over its 80 date yearly schedule. He suggests the NMF takes contemporary music a step further. Consider last year when the event hosted a performance that took place at the Pan Am Pool where musicians from the WSO were placed on the diving tower and synchronized swimmers plied the waters under a cloud of vapour. The piece was part of an evening themed “Music and Trauma” that featured Gavin Bryars’ The Sinking of the Titanic, a stunningly beautiful world-class work that few will forget. This year promises to take just as many artistic chances. “It’s all part of connecting the dots between more traditional classical works and the material that is being created now that speaks to us in a current context that is highly relevant,” says Mickelthwate. “Over the years, many of the works have been performed here first on stage in Winnipeg. This has been exciting for composers as well as audiences and performers. It’s part of the energy of the event.”

Building on last year’s concert at the Pan-Am Pool, the New Music Festival continues its exploration of alternative spaces and local histories, this time at the iconic Hudson’s Bay Building. Here, Winnipeg-based Sony Classical recording artist and Continuous Music pianist Lubomyr Melnyk will be presenting a new live music and film collaboration with Canada’s National Ballet based on the paintings of Group of Seven artist Lawren Harris. Organizers have also confirmed appearances by American experimentalist and avant-garde minimalist Meredith Monk and her singers. Icelander Hilmar Hilmarsson will present a world premiere based on the idea of the creation of the universe and the birth of language. Ben Shemie of Suuns will present a new work involving audience participation using multiple radios, and Festival Curator Matthew Patton will present a new work for strings and voices. More, former bassist of grunge band Hole and co-founder and director of Basilica Hudson, Melissa Auf der Mar, will bring a 12-hour Drone piece to the Duncan Arena (55 Duncan Street in the Exchange). Expect to discover a number of headliners contributing here to Auf der Mar’s immersive happening that starts at midnight following the close of the last performance at the Centennial Concert Hall. Women composers will also have a strong presence at this year’s New Music Festival. The Cecilia String Quartet will perform two new commissions and Alexina Louie will give the world premiere of her new Piano Quintet. According to Mickelthwate, this year’s series percolates around the celebration of Canada’s 150th birthday. “Canada is a country of many cultures and we will show this off with a range of new works by Canadians who originated elsewhere. For example, there is work from Tajik-Canadian composer, Farangis Nurulla-Khoja, who will offer “L’infini de l’instant,” and Sri Lankan-born Canadian, Dinuk Widjeratne, who scored for table, a rarely heard solo instrument,” he says, adding that there will also be new music by Canadian Cree composer Andrew Balfour, as well as Metis composer, Eliot Britton, who will present a world premiere commission for orchestra and electronics.

Prairie Theatre Exchange Welcomes New Education Director -- Loc Lu I sat down with Loc Lu, the new School and Outreach Director for Prairie Theatre Exchange’s Theatre & Film School located in the heart of Winnipeg’s downtown. The program, geared towards both adults and children, offers a variety of classes that range from acting for stage, film and T.V., to improv to theatre production to musical theatre, to movement and more! It turns out that the school has been running as long as the theatre –44 years! Loc Lu, what can you tell us about the history of P.T.E.’s longstanding education program? The last 10 years was under the leadership of our previous school director John Lowe. [He] came in and established a really great foundation for recreational and pre-professional training. We have some of the best space here coupled with some of the best artists and teachers. We bring in a wide range of students. Some come here to have a wonderful two-hour experience per week in a specific class, others come here to learn about how to break into the film scene or how to prepare for an audition. We certainly have the calibre of programming and teachers to help with both recreational and professional streams. What is your background in theatre education programming? This is my 17th season as a drama educator. I taught as a private contractor for many places, including Manitoba Theatre for Young People. I found I had a mind for programming; that I could see the bigger picture, and how certain classes could tie into a whole philosophy of theatre education. I was fortunate to work with MTYP as an outreach drama coordinator for five seasons. That was a huge part of my growth. I picked up a lot of skills and knowledge about the community, and worked with a lot of school and community groups. All that experience carried me forward to be able to step into this position here at P.T.E. Who teaches at PTE Theatre + Film? Something we really pride ourselves on is bringing in artists who are fully working and considered professionals in the community. For example, we have Hope McIntyre teaching playwriting, Arne MacPherson conducting our Young Company and Shakespeare classes, and Erin McGrath is doing her Musical Cabaret classes. (The list goes on!) These are all artists producing in their field and students get to have direct access to them - it is a beautiful cycle. What sort of future developments would you like to see for PTE Theatre + Film school? I definitely want to continue building upon the foundation and quality that John Lowe has set. I am also excited to get into work that I am passionate about, like Physical Theatre and Devised Theatre. I think these forms are really engaging for new audiences and can carry us forward into a new generation of theatre producers and patrons.

Why is theatre education still important nowadays? Theatre is both a mirror and a microphone. It allows us to examine and reflect who we are as individuals and communities. It is a great vehicle for expression with so many possibilities! That is why the training here is such a great opportunity for both people who want to pursue a career in acting and for those who want to build skills like communication, empathy, and teamwork within a creative community. Either way, you can totally live your passion here! For more information on P.T.E. Theatre + Film school programs check out www.pteschool.ca

Tuck seasoning mixture between skin and meat, spreading it as much as possible; put any extra seasoning inside the cavity. Rub the skin with olive oil. ABC The Lexicon of Love II (Virgin) “Is heartache really your profession?” asks singer Martin Fry in “Confessions of a Fool.” Heartache has paid well for him. In 1982, Fry and ABC made their audacious debut with The Lexicon of Love – sardonic but heartfelt songs, raised to towering heights by producer Trevor Horn and keyboard player/ arranger Anne Dudley. Horn is absent this time, along with Fry’s former band, but The Lexicon of Love II picks up smartly, with Fry in fine voice, smart new songs and Dudley not merely upholstering the songs but also using strings and brass to expand and drive them; the sumptuous “Kiss Me Goodbye” will compel as many to the dance floor as the tissue box. The ever-alert Fry remains open to the most delicious influences, from the delicate Motown woodwinds that open “The Flames of Desire” to John Barry’s spy-movie soundtracks in “I Believe in Love.”

TOY Yello (Polydor/Universal) The Swiss duo of Dieter Meier (voice) and Boris Blank (electronics) is so adept at creating new sound worlds it seemed our elegant men disappeared into one nine years ago. Toy shows they haven’t lost their rakish edge. Where many of their previous albums toggled uneasily between songs and sonic landscapes, the new one holds its balance for an hour, albeit with a little weirdness in the last stretch of the 17-track deluxe edition. Meier is 71 now, and his speak-sing voice is closer to Leonard Cohen’s occasional growl than anything resembling proper pop vocalizing, and while that adds interesting sandpaper to his roguish wit and lonely songs (beginning with “Limbo,” the first single), newcomers will be glad for the guest female singers. Blank orchestrates with such detail (sampled marimba, electric piano, etc.) it’s easy to forget he conjures all from synthesizers, and astounding to consider he’s wholly self-taught as a musician. Small wonder Swiss Post is honouring them – really – with a commemorative stamp.

24 | STYLE MANITOBA | WINTER 2016

He’s 74 now, and no fan expects John Cale to go gently. It’s a jolt, even so, to hear him revisiting his starkest album. Music for a New Society stunned in 1982 with its bare bones and open nerve ends. Here, he stripped his most arresting ballad, “I Keep a Close Watch,” to skeletal essentials. That was only the beginning. The album returns now, paired with M:Fans, a new imagining of the album. “Close Watch” and the equally charming “Chinese Envoy” return as chirpy pop tunes, but the prevailing mood is dark, looming and claustrophobic. Newcomers should begin with the peerless Paris 1919, but there’s ample light and shade here.

Pity young Eliot Dionisi, torn away from his friends one summer because his parents insist he spend the time with his mother’s family in rural Nova Scotia. How can he help his uncle catch lobsters when he barely knows how to swim? This YA novel by illustrator and writer Frank Viva is a fish-out-of-water story where our hero learns that a summer by the sea might not be so bad after all. A terrific tale with striking illustrations (Viva’s work appears regularly on New Yorker covers).

Are You an Echo? (Chin Music) by Misuzu Kaneko

Misuzu, one of Japan’s most beloved children’s poets, is little known outside of her native country. Even in Japan, her delightful, quirky miniatures of the natural world were long lost until just a few years ago. This picture book, beautifully illustrated by Toshikado Hajiri, combines translations of her work (by Sally Ito and Michiko Tsuboi) with the ultimately tragic story of Misuzu’s life, in a narrative by David Jacobson. A children’s book that adults will appreciate as well.

Live Right members choose a healthy lifestyle

BE YOUR BEST

T

o look and feel your best, you need to take time for yourself. Whether through a customized massage, body or face treatment, allowing yourself 60 minutes of pampering each and every month should be part of your choice to live a healthy lifestyle. Live Right Massage & Facial Spa, conveniently located at Unit 1 – 1190 Taylor Avenue, offers a plan that empowers you to be your best.

Live Right’s team of registered massage therapists and licensed skin care specialist offer a combination of customized massage, body and skin care treatments.

“At Live Right, we believe that a healthy lifestyle means taking care of yourself on an ongoing basis, and that’s why we developed our VIP membership program,” says owner Daryn Chernick. “Our membership has no fees, but brings many rewards. All we ask is that you prepay for one 60-minute treatment each month ($65 plus GST), and in return, we will provide you and everyone in your household with discounts on each and every service they come in for.”

With focus on the individual, treatments are customized to clients’ needs, he adds. “Unlike most spas where clients preselect a treatment, at Live Right, clients let the therapist know what their concerns are, and the therapist creates a treatment plan based on their specific needs.“

While you don’t have to be a member to use Live Right’s massage and spa services, membership offers many advantages, Chernick points out. “It reduces the price and allows you to get more massages. Also, if you’re not able to make it on any given month, we simply roll over your treatment into the next month so that you never lose your prepaid service.” In addition to the advantages membership offers, it reminds you to come in for your regular massage or facial. Clients usually book their next appointment before they leave, he says, or they can book online.

“All of our therapists are registered and have many years of experience,” Chernick says. “They offer therapeutic as well as relaxation massages, and each therapist has his or her own style.”

The aestheticians at Live Right have a combined total of 51 years of experience, Chernick notes, and they are fully trained in the Dermalogica professional line of skin care products. “Their skills allow them to tackle any skin condition and get quick results,” he says, adding that the Dermalogica line, unique to Live Right, has a wide range of products and is affordable.

Two years later, Chernick is confident he made the right decision. “We have a first class facility that offers a wide range of therapeutic services. The spa is open from 9 a.m. – 10 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and 10 to 5 on Sunday. “We understand the importance of providing convenient and timely treatments that fit seamlessly into your schedule,” Chernick says. “There is no waiting. Chernick opened Live Right Massage & Facial Spa November 2, 2014. Winter

Winter is coming… The days are getting colder and with the cooler temperatures come frizzy hair, dry skin and chapped lips. That’s why SST Cosmetic Tea Tree Moisturizing Primer was used on Tiara first before applying makeup. This makeup is one of the best as it features a Pure Mineral Base - your skin deserves nothing less. The stylists at Tantrum Salon & Spa love the look of this Silver/ Grey hair – definitely a desired colour this season. But there is no doubt that this can be a tricky one to achieve. If your hair is Jet Black, you’re probably not going to get this colour anytime soon. You have to be fairly light to begin with.

There are two parts to going silver, and the first step is getting hair as blonde as possible – meaning platinum Blonde. There can be no signs of warm tones, as it will turn to a khaki colour. Secondly, you will probably need to think about sacrificing some length, as your hair will not be in the same condition after all the bleaching. That’s why the pros at Tantrum recommend using Olaplex to minimize the damage and a Keratin Mask by Lanza to help rebuild and restore the strength of your hair. Seeing red! Red heads are so wonderfully rich, and when done right and maintained well, so beautiful!

Girl on Fire!

The trick with maintaining reds lies in the approach of the colorist, followed by a maintenance program the client needs to follow diligently, and the use of proper maintenance products at home.

The long cold winter ignites the return of the fiery red heads. Brunettes spice up their locks with beautiful tones of red, violet, or cherry colours and blondes are turning up the temperature in shades of gold, copper, pink and strawberry. While ombres and balayage are still a hot trend continuing to lead the hair colour industry, the shift to a warmer colour for fall and winter is a welcome variation.

Tiffany is a fiery redhead. To achieve her look, Kristina used a low volume developer in the colour formula, and added extra tone with concentrates and pure pigments. Permanent colour was used to retouch the new growth, and demi-permanent colour was used on her ends. For dimension, Kristina wove in rich golden and copper hi-lites, adding extra warmth and interest.

Serena’s hair had previous blonde ends and a dark root. Her regrowth was pre-lightened with the balayage highlight technique and then coloured all over for her ideal tone of a scorching redcopper. The casual elegance of the “undone” look is on point this year. Serena gets a choppy, blunt lob, styled big and messy using a flat iron to heat up and set her waves. Then back it up with a brush or finger combing and a great hair spray. Now that’s HOT! Hair & Make Up: Candess for Society Instagram: @candexx_l Photography: Michael Roberts Society the Salon 120 Donald St 204-947-3766 www.societythesalon.com

To maintain colour properly, shampoo and conditioner formulated for colour treated hair is necessary; washing hair less often will also help slow fading. When thermal styling, use a heat styling product to further protect the hair from fading, using a lower temperature with heat styling tools, and sealing the hair with leave-in conditioners and hair sealers. Colour: Aveda Full Spectrum and Deposit Only (PPD free, plant derived colour) Styling products: Wet hair: Damage Remedy Daily Hair Repair and Spit Ends Repair, Smooth Infusion Style Prep, then Confixor. A season of renewal PICTURE THIS: it’s a cold, snowy day,

and you’re on a mini-vacation. So far, you’ve enjoyed a soothing massage, relaxed in steam rooms and saunas, immersed yourself in warm water pools, reclined on heated stone benches and dozed by a blazing fire. You’ve sipped on a never-ending supply of delicious teas and fruit-infused waters. And you’ve dined on delicious food while sipping a glass of wine. Ahhh.

You’ve enjoyed all of this while wearing a bathing suit, a plush robe, and…a toque.

of Winnipeg residents eager to discover the joys and benefits of thermotherapy.

Welcome to wintertime at Thermëa, Winnipeg’s Nordic spa.

In turn, Winnipeggers have warmly embraced Thermëa’s unique take on the spa experience.

Thermëa is nestled into a quiet forested area adjacent to the Crescent Drive Golf Course in Wildwood. Since it opened in 2015, Thermëa has welcomed thousands

“We have had a great response from the people of Winnipeg,” says Marianne Trotier, public and press manager for the Nordik Group based in Quebec. “When I visit Winnipeg and I wear my Thermëabranded jacket, friendly people approach me to tell me how happy they are to have the spa here.” Like all Nordik Group spas, Thermëa offers its clients a unique relaxation experience in a natural setting. Alternating hot and cold followed by a period of relaxation provides numerous health benefits, known for centuries in Europe. For $50, guests benefit from world-class thermotherapy facilities: three outdoor baths (hot, cold and temperate), three saunas, as well as many warm and cozy indoor and outdoor relaxation areas. The spa also offers a range of massages and body treatments, and a restaurant. Thermëa is open 7 days a week, year round, rain or shine. If these aren’t reasons enough to go, Thermëa has several experiences and updates to create a winter retreat like no other.

30 | STYLE MANITOBA | WINTER 2016

A UNIQUE RITUAL Thermëa offers Aufguss (German for “infusion”) rituals in its Finlandia sauna. This method follows the ancient Finnish practice of generating bursts of hot, humid air by pouring water on heated stones. The Aufguss ritual heightens the effects of this traditional vaporization technique by using water enriched with natural essential oils in the form of a snowball (in winter). As soon as the snowball melts onto the stones, a burst of vapour with health enhancing properties is released. One of Thermëa’s two German-trained “sauna meisters” uses a towel to agitate the air, fanning guests who enjoy the scent and pleasurable benefits of essential oils. Offered four times daily, the Aufguss ritual “is a fun activity and the experience is different every time,” says Trotier. “It might be a quiet meditation, or we might play jazz, alternative or pop music to liven it up.”

NEW PLACE TO DINE Fresh, local produce is always on the menu at Thermëa’s restaurant and bistro. This winter, guests can enjoy the expanded restaurant facilities via a new large heated lounge terrace overlooking the spa pool areas. Here, you can enjoy drinks and share tapas while relaxing on extra comfy couches or seated at a bistro table.

NEW YEAR’S EVE Thermëa’s “no talking” rule will fall to the wayside on New Year’s Eve, when the spa will be turned into fun social scene. From 6:00 p.m. to 1:00 a.m. guests can ring in 2017 with a thermal experience, food, and sparkling wine at midnight. A DJ will provide an exciting, musical backdrop to this special, once-a-year event. More

details and purchase options for the New Year’s Eve package are available on Thermëa’s website.

GIFT CERTIFICATES TO RENEW THE SOUL You can never go wrong with a Thermëa gift certificate for the holidays. Gift certificates are available online at thermea.ca. “Clients can select the right gift by creating packages tailored to him or her, dad or mom, couples, or anyone on your gift list,” says Trotier. “We’ve designed it to make the gift buying experience easy.”

Thermëa continues to seek ways to provide their guests a one-of-a-kind retreat to renew soul, body and spirit. As only one of two Nordik Nature Spa locations in Canada (a third is set to open in Whitby, Ont., in 2018), isn’t it time to treat yourself or a loved one to a winter getaway, that’s only 8 kilometres from downtown Winnipeg?

Just don’t forget your toque.

Design Diversity

BY DONNA MINKUS PHOTOGRAPHY: MICHAEL ROBERTS

Neighbourhoods of Bridgwater features designs from range of builders

W

hen buying a home, most homeowners look for a design that meets their needs. Some want to create a design that is reflective of their personal style. The Neighbourhoods of Bridgwater offer those options and more because Manitoba Housing has not only included a range of builders that specialize in distinctive designs, but has also incorporated meaningful design guidelines that offer more attention to detail. “When we were envisioning what the Neighbourhoods of Bridgwater would look like, the idea was to create a new kind of neighbourhood that would promote healthy living, which we have done through our extensive park trails that connect the neighbourhoods,” says Dwayne Rewniak, Executive Director, Housing Delivery/ Land Development, Manitoba Housing. “At the same time, we wanted to offer diversity in the style and design of the homes that are available in the four neighbourhoods. We have done that through a complement of 17 designated homebuilders.” Bridgwater Forest, the first neighbourhood to be developed, features striking architectural detailed homes built on a variety of lots, including back lanes. Interspersed through 25 acres of mature forest, the neighbourhood includes a mix of single and multi-family dwellings. “We’ve sold 1,090 single-family homes in Bridgwater Forest, and only have a few lots remaining in this neighbourhood,” Rewniak says, adding that he expects this neighbourhood to be fully occupied by 2017.

Homes in Bridgwater Lakes blend traditional style with modern architectural features. This neighbourhood also offers a variety of lot types, which include large laneless lots that feature custom homes with lake lots and walkout basements built by builders such as Arlt, Artista, Gino’s, Hearth, Huntington, KDR and Maric; regular laneless lots, which are constructed by volume builders such as A&S, Discovery, Hilton, Qualico, Randall, and Kensington; and smaller lots on back lanes, built by builders such as Signature and Ventura, Rewniak explains. “The smaller laned lots provide a more affordable price point, as well as diversity that ranges from single-family homes to a mixture of multifamily homes that include rentals, townhouses and condos,” he says. To date, 875 single-family lots have been sold in Bridgwater Lakes, and about 700 homes are occupied. Bridgwater Trails, with its extensive park and trail system, is the newest residential neighbourhood and offers the largest number of singlefamily and multi-family units. “Bridgwater Trails consists of 1,031 single-family homes, with some lots in Phases 3 and 4 being converted to duplex lots,” Rewniak says. About 380 singlefamily lots have been sold, and more than 200 occupied. A total of 22 new showhomes have opened in Bridgwater Trails. The showhomes include nine laneless showhomes on Del Monica Road, eight

laned showhomes also on Del Monica Road, and five custom showhomes on Rose Lake Court. “Each one of the 17 designated homebuilders has a showhome in at least one lot category in Bridgwater Trails,” Rewniak points out, adding that the Neighbourhoods of Bridgwater had a total of 28 showhomes, and all were represented in the Fall 2016 Parade of Homes. The 50-acre park in Bridgwater Trails is still under development, and it is expected that the hilltop lookout will be completed in 2017, Rewniak states. The sports field for baseball and volleyball and basketball courts are all in, and the Phase 1 children’s play area is also complete. The fountain, located at the centre of Bridgwater Trails, is situated on a hilltop so it provides a good vantage point for the neighbourhood, Rewniak notes. “We expect it will be like the fountain at Bridgwater Lakes, which is a gathering point for the neighbourhood.” Bridgwater Centre’s residential and commercial developments continue, with showhomes ready for viewing, Rewniak says. Hilton’s showhome is located on Park West Drive and A&S Homes has two showhomes in Bridgwater Centre located on 243 and 247 Park East Drive. Save-On-Foods, scheduled to open its doors in November, offers grocery and produce ranging from meats and vegetables to baked goods. Since the grocery store will be central to all the Bridgwater neighbourhoods, residents will be able to walk or bike there. A Manitoba Liquor Mart is also scheduled to open in December, as well as RBC Financial, Rewniak states, indicating he expects an announcement will be made regarding plans for additional commercial ventures by year’s end.

StreetSide is nearly sold out

of condos in Bridgwater, but its development in the area isn’t even close to over. At writing time, the proposed name for its newest project - Elevate Condominiums - was pending approval. It is StreetSide’s largest endeavour in the area to date, and will be the highest peak in Bridgwater once it’s complete. Aptly named for its impressive height and the upscale lifestyle it will offer, Elevate will be a seven-storey concrete and steel building, offering 218 luxurious homes in the heart of Bridgwater Town Centre. Perfectly positioned to take advantage of the retail and walkability of the neighbourhood centre, Elevate will offer the easy urban lifestyle the area was designed for. A fitness room, outdoor pool and large private terraces will complement the condo development, allowing owners to soak up the most out of their brand-new homes. Launching for pre-sales and beginning its rise in 2017, Elevate is currently expecting to welcome residents in the spring of 2018. Also on the horizon is StreetSide’s first-ever stacked townhome development in Winnipeg. The townhomes will mimic single-family homes while enjoying the energy savings and security advantages of shared living. Going up across the street from Elevate in Bridgwater Centre, the townhomes’ ground-breaking designs will be

launched to the public in 2017. Keep an eye out for this unique new community from StreetSide. With a final phase of move-in-ready suites now selling, StreetSide’s The MIX Condominiums offers the advantages of a Bridgwater Forest location while edging the shops and services of Bridgwater Centre. The location offers the best of both neighbourhoods: convenience with a side of stunning natural scenery. Built to a higher standard, The MIX offers included upgrades like vinyl plank flooring, quartz kitchen counters, parking, and stainless steel appliance packages. With amenities like heated underground parking, a fitness room, resi-

are among the only remaining new condominiums ready for immediate possessions in Bridgwater. Acting quickly on any of the pre-sale opportunities in Bridgwater or the chance to purchase a stylish, readyfor-you home is encouraged. Although so much more is ahead, StreetSide can also look back on successful sold-out projects in Bridgwater, namely its Bridgwater Forest Townhome Condominiums and North Town Condominiums. The unshakable popularity of the area and the condominium lifestyle in Bridgwater has led StreetSide to commit to an active future of building within its master-planned communities. Wanting to provide more choice to homebuyers, StreetSide continues to contribute innovative home plans and condominium types to the Bridgwater neighbourhoods. WINTER 2016 | STYLE MANITOBA | 39

presented, and even beyond — the Eagle Custom Homes team is there for their clients.

We use these terms to describe a majestic bird. But what about a homebuilder?

“We will modify any of our standard designs to suit our clients’ homebuilding needs in Genstar communities, or on any lot in Winnipeg,” says Eagle Custom Homes’ president/ owner David Gurvey.

In the case of aptly named Eagle Custom Homes, those same words apply. Except the company’s strength lies in a commitment to building quality homes, its nobility comes from professional integrity and the team’s vision is focused on client satisfaction. At every stage of the home build — from the first meeting, to when the foundation is poured, design selections made, walls erected and keys

“We take a very hands-on approach to building houses,” says Gurvey, who established the company three years ago following successes in the Winnipeg commercial market developing apartment and condominium homes. Gurvey’s commercial background has given him an extensive knowledge

of building codes and processes. In total, the Eagle Custom Homes’ team has a combined 50+ years of construction experience. Clients benefit from this experience when the team brings this attention to detail and superior finishings to their single family home builds. To ensure quality, Eagle Custom Homes has its own concrete crew for concrete foundations. They also have standard specifications that are usually considered upgrades, such as painted ceilings, 60-gallon water tank, keypad garage entry, basement perimeter plugs and more.

In addition to single residential units, Eagle Custom Homes is building a 55-unit townhome condominium community in Transcona’s Devonshire Village. These popular three-bedroom units are phased in and built as units are sold. With every type of build, ultimately, Gurvey says, “we work closely with our clients to make sure they get the home they want.”

“We also have an optional upgrade to Polar Windows for all our homes,” notes Gurvey. Eagle Custom Homes builds modern, practical family homes that are also made for entertaining. They offer many outstanding floor plans to choose from, all featuring lots of light and windows. The three-bedroom, two-storey showhome at 204 Bonaventure Dr. E. is a perfect example of an Eagle Custom Home, with its open concept floor plan, glass railings and soaring ceilings. The master bedroom has a large covered balcony where the homeowners might enjoy their morning lattes.

What’s Laid Down As one of the city’s leading flooring centres, Curtis Carpets is continually adding cutting edge products to keep customers up to date on the latest functional and fashionable flooring trends. The newest addition to the Pembina Highway showroom is Vinyl2Go by Beaulieu Canada. Luxury vinyl planks have become a staple product in many flooring stores, thanks to not only their superior durability, but their aesthetic appeal as well. Available in 12 different styles, Vinyl2Go features a carpenter hand-scraped texture and four-sided micro bevel to capture a pure hardwood appearance. But unlike hardwoods Vinyl2Go can be laid down in high-moisture areas such as the kitchen and bathroom. Along with being waterproof, the planks are stain resistant, act as a ther-

mal insulator, reducing your home energy costs, as well as being a sound insulator. Beaulieu’s luxury vinyl flooring is also coated with a wear layer unique to the market, which is formulated to add anti-fungal, antimicrobial, and anti-bacterial properties. Installation is simplified, thanks to the brand’s loose laid design. The thick planks provide stability and only need to be glued around the perimeter of the space. This ensures that if a plank is damaged it can be removed and replaced easily. While hardwoods have had a reputation for being high maintenance, that is no longer true thanks to the trend towards low-lustre finishes and wire-brushed varieties. With more oak and ash species being released, the natural grains and added texture of hand-scraping or wire-brushing tend to

hide imperfections better than semi-gloss dark maple planks. And, without the semigloss, touch-ups that are required are much easier to complete. Curtis Carpets is the only flooring showroom in Winnipeg and the surrounding area to stock Stanley Cooper Hardwood. Stanley Cooper is dedicated to the strictest quality control with many features such as boil/freeze tests, marine grade adhesives, and very few defects compared to other hardwoods. Available in three unique colours and 15 styles, these hardwood floors also follow strict environmental guidelines, making it a good choice for the earth and your home. Visit Curtis Carpets’ showroom to see the latest products, as well as multiple other brands to meet any flooring needs.

Superior Sales, Quality Installation You could say that Ward Friesen’s path was laid out for him from early on. Along with his father and another business partner he owned two building supply dealerships, with Ward looking after the flooring division in both stores. When the one partner bought them out in 1998, Ward knew he wanted to continue his flair for flooring through his own business, Friesen Floor & Décor Inc. Almost 20 years later and in their fourth location, Friesen Floor & Décor resides at 1080 Waverley Street in Winnipeg. The company’s showroom offers a large selection of carpet, vinyl, porcelain-ceramic tile, hardwood, laminate, vinyl plank, vinyl tile, and floor care products. “We have seen flooring evolve more in the past 10 years than it has over the last 50 years,” explains Ward.

Although carpet and sheet vinyl are still good sellers, the market has seen more demand for hard surface products. Consumers are looking for ease of maintenance, floors that offer hide ability; often distressed in appearance. There are more flooring products available to withstand an uncontrolled environment, such as in seasonal cottages and sunrooms. Many of these floors are made with water resistant materials and can be used in bathrooms, foyers, and laundry rooms. “Many of our customers are looking for the natural beauty of real hardwood, and Friesen Floor has a large selection of Canadian hardwood suppliers that offer many styles and colours,” he states. “We also have many customers looking for porcelain tile, glass tile or natural stone. Friesen Floor offers custom tile work, including custom showers, kitchen backsplashes, and also installs electric floor heat systems.” “In the end, it’s about getting the right product for each individual’s lifestyle and budget,” states Ward. “We have a great sales team that are passionate about the products we offer. Friesen Floors’ niche would certainly be residential remodels, and we also offer many commercial flooring products.” The company works closely with many homeowners, designers, renovators, and custom homebuilders. “Most of our work comes through referrals,” notes Ward, pointing to his exceptional installation team as one of the reasons customers keep coming back. “You can buy product anywhere, but if the project is not handled with attention to detail, or done in a professional manner, the whole experience will be negative. Our installers are real craftsmen and it shows.” WINTER 2016 | STYLE MANITOBA | 45

The Real Thing Hardwood floors are equated with luxury and quality, and while inexpensive look-a-like options are gaining some traction because of cost, the benefits of the real thing are hard to ignore. “Luxury vinyl planks, laminate, or carpet add no long-term value to a home,” explains David Warrenchuk of DMW Hardwood Floors. A solid, 3/4-inch thick sand on site hardwood floor retains or increases in value from the day it’s laid down, and also has the benefit of being adaptable to change without having to be removed or reinstalled. “That is one of the great advantages of wood, you can change the look of a room by changing the colour of your floor, like changing paint colours. The options with wood in custom work or to fit any lifestyle and décor are endless. Now that’s real value, ” he states. One of the biggest changes to hardwoods over the years is the quality of VOC compliant finishes. These new finishes not only help with the floors durability but also offer ease of maintenance and repair. For over 30 years, DMW Hardwood Floors has specialized in sanding and finishing of existing

hardwood floors, and installation of raw hardwoods. This second-generation flooring company works closely with customers from the

But Shaw Floors have taken LVP to the next level with their newest offering Floorte™. The line’s waterproof qualities make it ideal for high moisture areas like basements, bathrooms, and mudrooms, as well as being strong, durable, and flexible with the ability to conceal imperfections of the floor beneath. What makes Floorte™ truly unique is its highdefinition printing for a hardwood or tile look that is authentic. It’s designed to emulate the top species and colours of hardwood, as well as a variety of fossilized wood, stone, and concrete visuals. “You can actually feel the grain and embossed finish on LVP floors,” explains Ryan Nemis of Ken’s Carpets and Urban Home Style Centre, the only Shaw Floors gallery dealer in Winnipeg. KITCHEN&BATH

The professionals at Robinson Lighting & Bath Centre understand that the way your shower looks impacts the entire bathroom design. So if your shower walls are dingy, full of cracked grout and old tile, it can bring down the appearance of your entire bathroom. No one wants to bathe in an old, dingy shower, so why not update your shower and give a facelift to your entire bathroom in just one weekend with Utile by MAAX. TRADITIONAL SHOWER PROBLEMS OVERCOME Until recently, you had two real options for updating your shower. You could opt for tile, which is expensive, difficult to install, and which has inherent issues surrounding the grout and caulk. You could also opt for a onepiece shower surround, which was easier to clean, but devoid of any style. Utile solves all of these issues, and does it with a great sense of panache at the same time. Utile is a shower wall system with a unique installation and the look and feel of real tile. The panels lock together securely at the corners with MAAX’s Ulok system, giving you the

Get a Fast, Fresh Update for Your Shower Walls

look of a tiled shower with the same ease of cleaning and watertight design as a one-piece shower surround. Rather than installing the tiles one at a time, you’re putting up an entire wall at once, making the entire installation faster and easier than you may have ever thought possible. And with over 20 different styles to choose from, it’s easy to update your shower in way that also complements the look of the room as a whole.

PERSONALIZE YOUR LOOK Every bathroom design needs a focal point, a place where all the other styles and materials in the room come together in one, eye-catching location. With Utile, you can create that focal point right within the shower itself using a variety of different panels and designer styles. Utile comes in over 20 diverse designs and colour options. Choose from classic subway tile and the clean lines of a modern shower, or something more avant-garde such as an ombreeffect hexagon shower. There are even intricate patterns within the tiles themselves, giving another level of depth and detail to the design, as well as panels with the look and variation of natural stone.

Opting for a one-piece surround is faster, but means that you lose out on style and design. Utile can be installed in just one weekend, and doesn’t require the specialized tools and knowledge necessary to put in an intricate tile design. So you can quickly update your shower with the look of subway tile, natural stone, or even mosaics with just a few days of work – perfect for getting your guest bathroom in shape before those holiday guests start arriving. Utile from MAAX gives you a way to get the look and style of a tile shower without the hassles that so often accompany the material. Now you can have your design and your ease of cleaning, too. When you’re ready to get started on your shower makeover, stop into a Robinson Lighting & Bath Centre showroom where expert staff can help you find the right shower walls and designs for your home. Whether you want to redo your whole bathroom, or just your shower, their design savvy staff is ready to help you achieve the new bathroom of your dreams. Stop in today to get started and see how easy it is to get a fresh new shower with Utile.

If you’re looking to redo your entire bathroom at once, you can also use your Utile shower walls as the starting point to create a cohesive, clean and stylish look for the whole room.

FAST TRANSFORMATION Tiling a shower takes time – at least two full days for installation and another day or two for the grout to cure. During this time, you’re without a shower, which can be a serious drawback for busy families and professionals. WINTER 2016 | STYLE MANITOBA | 49

KITCHEN&BATH Blended Beautifully

The mix of contemporary material and natural wood gives this Kitchen Craft custom-designed kitchen the warmth it needed to blend seamlessly with H. Albers Builders Ltd.’s new showhome at 119 Coneflower Crescent in Sage Creek. The space combines modern stainless steel pieces, such as the hood above the stove, metallic lights, and gloss white thermofoil cabinets with warm accents of real walnut veneer. Kitchen Craft’s installer book-matched the veneer on the island, the backsplash on the right wall, and also covered the walk-in pantry, including a custom-built pantry door, for a unique look. “The main direction was to keep it simple but also bring in some warmth by the addition of the walnut with new design details,” explains Alexander Scheiermann, design and sales consultant with Kitchen Craft. “In my opinion, the design and colour selection is on mark with the current trends. It is combining modern cabinetry with the warmth through the natural design details and colours.” The kitchen is also highly functional with its seven-foot island, which includes a sink, dishwasher, wine fridge, dropped decoration area with cabinets below, and also a seating area.

The Perfect Fit

Short, tall, big, or small - we’re all unique. So why should cabinets, counters, kitchens, and bathrooms be one size fits all? Two30Nine by Decor takes individuality in to account for a highly customized design experience. “We design to the person, not the place,” explains Gord Wall of Two30Nine by Decor. “The standard counter might be 36 inches but we create all different sizes. Why not design a kitchen or bathroom that’s functional for you?” The customized design experience starts in Two30Nine’s showroom with a unique lift table that moves up or down depending on the height of the person. This helps customers get an idea about what level of counter, appliance, or sink feels best to them. “People can finally experience what it feels like to have something designed specifically for them,” he states, adding proper sizing reduces having to bend over a sink or stove, and eliminates the need for a stool to reach high cabinets. “We’re not just about selling beautiful cabinets, we’re about finding solutions for your home.” Even elements such as knobs versus handles are addressed. And once customers are comfortable, they can move on to creating the space to their style taste. Find your function at Two30Nine by Decor’s Morden showroom or the new Winnipeg design centre opening at 552 Academy Road in December.

Authentic. Cultured. Rustic. Rooted in classic style, the new Heritage Road lifestyle collection is warm and welcoming, and found exclusively at Ashley HomeStores. The collection, which includes elements for the living room, dining room, and master bedroom, features nature-inspired colour schemes that bring a love for the outdoors to life inside your home. Earthy hues, nautical sands, and briny blues are paired with upholstery fabrics of plaid, chenille, herringbone, and supple leather. Add the accent pieces and accessories that reflect a well-traveled lifestyle for a look that’s instantly rich and inviting. Movie marathons and lingering conversations are all the more comfortable on deep spacious seating. Sink into the Ilena sofa’s herringbone pattern and sandstone hue, which sets a relaxed casual tone with toss pillows in lieu of traditional back cushions. Or share a cozy evening with the whole family

on the Amandine sectional. Living room sets include sofas, sectionals, love seats, and chairs set in fabrics ranging from a chenille-like texture to supple nutmeg leather. Scrolled arms and deep-coloured wooden legs complete the classic look. Solid hardwood end and coffee tables set in cherry wood or darker hues are perfect pieces to complete the room, or try an upholstered ottoman in place of a cocktail table.

Create a dining space where family and friends will gather to share meals and memories for years to come. Mix an upholstered armchair, bench, and side chairs around a solid wood dining room table. Try the counter height option for a more casual, intimate setting. The rough milled pinewood offers up a timeless look for the table and complementary pieces such as servers, buffets, and hutches, which all feature an undertone of grey.

Choose from the detailed wood of the Townser set, the wooden panels of Windville, or an upholstered button tufted headboard with a dramatic scrolling footboard. The complementing craftsman-style nightstands and dressers dotted with gold tone hardware are what dreams are made of. Rustic character, lasting charm, and natural warmth are exclusively yours at Ashley HomeStores this season.

DESIGN&DECOR Light with a View

Get a “city view” no matter where you live with Hubbardton Forge’s stunning pendant titled Cityscapes. This handmade, hand-forged pendant’s visual concept is meant to evoke the image of skyscraper silhouettes situated on the waterfront (an LED platform) and reflected off the water below. The transitional-styled fixture comes in two sizes - large (as shown here) and small - in a variety of finishes. The body is available in either burnished steel or bronze, while the “towers” come in either vintage platinum or soft gold for just a warmer touch. A wash of beautiful up-and-down light graces this elegant fixture and creates soft ambience, as well as a statement piece in any dining area. “It’s a really pretty piece; it’s so different,” states Simon Simkin, president of Super-Lite Lighting Ltd, adding it hits the Winnipeg marketplace right on the head in terms of what’s trending now. “Mixed metals, mixed colours, and multi-finished products are quite a trend. You’re seeing things like soft gold over soft silver for a warmer, more transitional look.” The small version of Cityscapes, part of Hubbardton Forge’s 2016 collection, is just one of the many unique LED fixtures featured on SuperLite Lighting’s showroom floor. From classic to contemporary, Super-Lite’s professionally trained lighting designers can help find the right lighting solution for you.

Comfort and Ambience

It used to be that fireplaces were meant purely for heat. A black stove filled with soot and ashes didn’t bother homeowners as long as it was producing heat. But not with today’s technology. Electric fireplaces offer both comfort and ambience, and the Prism Series by Dimplex is the perfect example of blending the two. A combination of technology, artistry, and craftsmanship, the patented LED Dimplex flame technology creates the illusion of a true fire, while the diamond-like acrylic ice ember bed chunks sparkle with the reflected light. Users can choose from a variety of brilliant colour themes or cycle through a range of colours using the prism mode, freezing on the hue of choice for a show-stopping effect. This linear fireplace is equally as functional. The system includes a powerful and efficient fanforced heater designed to heat a room up to 400 square feet, providing supplemental heat when required. And since the fireplace emits no flame heat, the glass front remains cool to the touch making it the safe choice for your home. The electric fireplace comes in three sizes 34, 50, and 74-inch wide systems - and can be installed as a wall-mount, fully-recessed into new construction, or retrofitted into an existing wall. Check out the Prism Series’ dazzling display in Classic Fireplace’s showroom and learn more about this versatile fireplace.

home renovation can be a daunting process where details determine the success of the project. This is the view of Certified Master Renovator and owner of Harwood Design Builders (HDB), Wayne Sage. Wayne has been building fresh excitement into established properties for over 40 years. It is his detail-oriented quality first approach that had him launch Winnipeg-based Harwood Design Builders (HDB) more than a decade ago.

special job - their home. We have done a lot of work in River Heights on the aging heritage housing stock, as well as newer properties in Lindenwoods and Charleswood. When details matter, people tend to call us first.”

“With Harwood Design we have been able to take things to another level with a design build approach from a team of highly skilled carpenters and apprentices, as well as in-house designers,” he says, pointing to their one-stopshop business model where the team handles everything from concept to completion. Wayne reports that the company has been built on referrals.

“Our two in-house designers regularly work with leaders in the local market to source items. Our relationships with our suppliers not only helps when it comes to pricing but gives us the assurance that a product ordered will arrive on time at the site. This is a common complaint people tell us when they discuss past experience with renovation contractors. They tell us about fixtures not installed or hardware that is still not available. We look to locals like Fort Rouge Glass for things like shower doors and they don’t let us down. This means our customers let others know Harwood

is a company you can trust. We do what we say, and we have been earning the trust of our clients this way for just over 10 years.” Harwood is also celebrated by its peers. Looking over an impressive list of awards and industry accolades, Harwood Design Builders stands out as Manitoba’s most decorated renovator. For example, the company has been a recipient of the Manitoba Home Builders Association (MHBA) Renomark Gold Award for excellence seven years running. They were also this year’s finalists in the Canadian Home Builders Association (CHBA) National Awards for Housing Excellence, where they scored in categories for Whole Home Renovations under $250,000 and Whole Home Renovations Over $250,000. In total, HDB has earned 16 MHBA Gold awards and 8 CHBA Sam awards, including best renovation in Canada. According to Wayne, people look to them for a long list of home reno projects that includes: interior design; kitchen renovations; basement renovations; bathroom renovations; whole house renovations; home additions; heritage renovations and restorations. To accomplish these requests the company uses unique design tools such as 3D rendering. “With this design capability we can walk clients through a fully rendered drawing in three dimensions that make conceptualizing the project a lot easier than staring at old style blue prints. This is a capability others in Winnipeg’s home renovation trade do not have. It allows us to really stand out and it gives our clients even more confidence in the project.” HDB also stands out for its good citizenship. Towards this end, Wayne formed the Harwood Foundation, an organization where the primary focus is to help children live a healthier, happier more joyful life.

“We do what we say, and we have been earning the trust of our clients this way for just over 10 years.”

“The Harwood Foundation has been set up to help support smaller, local charities and causes that often have needs that may not be addressed by the bigger foundations. Causes like helping families pay for sports equipment they would not otherwise be able to afford; medical emergencies for families whose kids require costly medical treatments or need to travel for medical care; helping families get back on their feet after a devastation like a fire or loss of parents,” he explains, adding that most of the funds for the Harwood Foundation are acquired by removing and selling the demolished and salvaged materials from the homes they work on. Other funds are generated from an annual charity golf tournament and unsolicited donations. “Our goal is to give away 100% of the funds we raise.” Concluding, Wayne puts Harwood Design Builders’ service oriented package into perspective. “Our goal is outwardly simple, but in reality it takes a lot of commitment to achieve. Every day we work to fulfill our clients’ residential construction and renovation dreams with unparalleled quality and workmanship. We promise the highest level of professionalism and build trust through commitment, fulfillment and integrity in everything we do.”

MAKE A DATE WITH THE PROS

Designer Mia Parres and Master Contractor Rob Evans of HGTV’s The Expandables are real world renovation pros that take home projects to higher planes. Look for them at this year’s Winnipeg Renovation Show. Make a date to attend Rob & Mia’s appearance on The Lifestyle Stage at the Show, Friday January 13 @ 7PM and Saturday, January 14 @ 12 noon. We asked Rob and Mia a few questions to help set the tone for their date here in Winnipeg. Here’s what they told us. Q: Why should the public attend events such as Renovation Shows? Mia: Renovation and design shows are a fabulous way for the public to connect with real vendors, trades, like-minded people and most importantly, professionals. It’s the best way to streamline the questions that you may have for your own personal projects, or upcoming dreams, and have professionals guide you in the right direction. Rob: The average homeowner doesn’t know a lot about the build and renovation world, especially when it comes to new products and services that aren’t carried in their local big box store. Renovation shows are a tremendous opportunity for them to see all these things in one location, while having an informed spokesperson explain the product or service to them.

Q: Where does the public find the most challenge in home reno projects? Mia: I find most of my clients get stuck in the planning process, which is where budget and design meet. They have big dreams for their renovations, and are too overwhelmed by the process and the tiny details and planning. That’s where it is great to integrate a professional contractor and designer and have someone help guide them in the right direction.

Rob: Weirdly, I tell me clients to dream big, realistically of course, but big. I would rather try to rein them in than stifle the process in the beginning. Yes, budgets have to be kept in check, but I want clients to be wowed by their new space and excited with the finished product.

Rob: Homeowners tend to neglect the communication skills of their contractor. This is a person that you are trusting with your biggest investment in an area where you may have very little expertise. You need to be able to voice any concern to your contractor, be heard, and get resolution to the issue or question. You need to trust and get along with your contractor. Q: Head or heart - When you start on a project from where should the inspiration come? Mia: With my clients, I always start with my head. I love to be inspired by their dreams, but I also want to be practical with what they need and how they want their lives to function. Once the practical and budget sides have been put into motion, I let my heart take over and guide the overall process. WINTER 2016 | STYLE MANITOBA | 61

With many satisfied client come many positive comments: “They are as hassle-free as you will ever find in the home renovation trade.” “They have their own designer, carpenters, plumbers and electricians. We dealt only with their renovation consultant, making it as stressfree as possible.” Central to their philosophy is getting the job done properly from the beginning. And, while this might seem like a given, they may take a portion of the job beyond code requirements to insure the reno you get done today lasts into the future. Their reputation has been earned by not accepting lesser quality solutions when their experience tells them otherwise. Their crews of trade professionals and sales people have an incredible breadth of expertise that is rolled out to every job they do. your awning, casement or bay window,” says Doug, mentioning that a good measurement at the beginning helps keep costs and timelines in check. “We work with your décor budget and

provide all the options to make your choice of new window coverings a choice that lasts and delivers value for years.”

A CHANGE FOR THE BETTER “You talk, we listen,” says Doug Sanders of Change of Blinds, a leader in Winnipeg’s window covering trade. Doug and his team offer a vast assortment of blinds and shades in a wealth of colours, fabrics and materials from North America’s top suppliers. “We come right into the home with a free consultation where we discuss your window covering needs. We then select the correct type of window treatment with just the right options. This process allows customers to have a better understanding of what proper window coverings can achieve with much smaller costs in comparison to many other home renovation projects,” he says. These days, people are looking for simpler solutions that are low maintenance with easy clean features. His customers are also looking for products that prevent harmful UV rays from damaging furniture and help keep homes cool in the summer and warm in the winter. Even technology has stepped in to take window coverings to a new level, where integrated software allows homeowners to operate motorized blinds and shades with Smartphones and other mobile devices. Change of Blinds has the solutions with expert advice on all fronts. “We can look at your existing windows and discuss the right type of product to work with

KEEPING COSTS IN CHECK A challenge typically faced by those buying new homes and those looking to renovate is the upward cost spiral caused by options and plan changes during the design and building process. Now, Alair Homes offers an innovative approach to both new home construction and renovation projects that takes out the guesswork and keeps costs in line. Alair Homes is a new franchise concept from BC that made its debut in Manitoba earlier this year. According to Alair’s Renovation Specialist, Warren Koop, the concept has been welcomed by the public because of its transparency. “We offer a unique customer focused approach where the client is able to see all the documents, quotes and prices that we get. This gives people the assurance that they are paying a fair price without any gouging. Along the way we are also able to educate our clients so that they better understand the complexity of a project and how costs are determined. They also learn to ask the right questions,” says Koop, pointing to their proprietary ‘Client Control’ software. Here, customers are able to make selections and see timelines and costs themselves rather than having to call someone to ask. This means budgets that are built before the project starts remain intact during construction. “No one likes surprises. We define everything so that they can be properly costed.”

According to Koop, Alair Homes has been able to remove a lot of the risk associated with home projects. “Runaway costs can be a project killer. Our concept is one that leaves in the excitement of a home project while removing

the nasty stress caused by costly overruns and compromises. No wonder we have become the fastest growing new home builder in Canada.”

Springfield Woodworking offers a complete cabinet selection as well as a full assortment of stone counters from a wide range of manufacturers. “Come to our showroom to see the difference our approach can make to your project.”

A GREAT FIT Old world craftsmanship meets new age technology at Springfield Woodworking. Located near Anola with a full showroom in Winnipeg at 893 Redonda St. in Transcona, Springfield Woodworking has become a local leader in new kitchen cabinets and countertops, thanks to their approach where they team hands-on workmanship alongside the accuracy and speed of stateof-the-art machinery. According to Springfield’s General Manager, Pauly Kleinsasser, they offer a custom touch that few can replicate. “We make cabinets that actually fit the opening. When a customer stipulates a size, we make that size. This means carpenters don’t have to fill in the gaps when they build your kitchen like they do with cabinets from big box stores.” Kleinsasser remarks that word of mouth has been their best advertising. “To this point we have grown the business on referrals from satisfied customers. Now we want to encourage the public and others, such as designers and contractors to come down to our showroom on Redonda Street to see what we can offer,” he says, pointing to the UV water-based top coat that customers see as a key difference between Springfield’s cabinets and the competition. “We spent close to a million dollars to create a high tech spray line for this process. This top coat provides maximum durability with no solvents in the formulation.”
