racing Winnipeg’s oldest, most prestigious residential streets are beautiful, traditional homes. Built decades ago, most of these homes have stood the test of time. Some have not. But in their place, new homes are emerging to breathe life and energy into established neighbourhoods. This is one such infill home that successfully bridges neighbourhood character and modern design.

The windows also let lots of daylight in, creating a delightful interplay with the muted industrial finishes used inside, starting at the front entrance.
The home’s linear architectural profile is the perfect complement to the surrounding landscape. It looks like it was always meant to

Made for entertaining, the kitchen is ultramodern yet understated with its blend of sleek cabinetry from M Concept, stainless steel appliances and concrete flooring. Honed granite countertops with a matte finish reduce glare and adds a casual tone.
One enters the home through a 12-foot-tall black fiberglass door complemented by an adjacent floor-to-ceiling window. Heated concrete tiles in the foyer and throughout the main floor introduce a decidedly industrial vibe from the get-go. To the left of the foyer is a sunken formal dining room or home office, warmed by 7.5-inch-wide planks of engineered hardwood flooring. Straight ahead is a central, open concept kitchen replete with a wall of stainless steel Thermador appliances: a wine preservation column, refrigerator, freezer and convection oven. Flush with the countertop is a smooth induction cooktop with a fully usable cooking surface that heats up only where the pot is placed on it. It’s one of the many high tech features incorporated into this home.

Keeping clutter at bay while entertaining is a butler’s kitchen, where meals can be prepped and dishes washed – completely out of sight. There’s even a chef style gas range and hood. Tons of storage and clean lines even here is typical of the level of detail that goes into a Trademark Homes custom build. The design team deliberately designed the kitchen island to be standing room only to allow for easy traffic flow and to maintain visual continuity. With no seating area, storage is available around the island. In keeping with the linear feel is the black rectangular sink and handy stainless steel trough sink where ice, utensils and beverages can be kept close at hand – perfect for entertaining.
Yet, this ultramodern kitchen is understated. Trademark Homes’ designer Carmen Dhaliwal chose honed granite countertops with a matte finish to reduce glare and add a more casual tone. Off the kitchen is a laid-back lounge area complete with bar and lighted black cabinetry. Reclaimed red-brown brick used for a feature wall lends an aged, warm look to the space, keeping it from feeling sterile. A full main floor bathroom includes a unique floating wall shower stall open to both sides, as well as a slim trough sink. A bank of vertical fiberglass windows with motorized blinds extends along the rear of the main floor, which overlooks a covered patio and the backyard pool. is a casual dining area, the perfect setting for a massive acacia wood table sourced from Indonesia. An expansive, sunken living room is a great place to relax and enjoy the outdoor view or watch TV. This room and the entire home are wired for sound and light, and more. “This home is fully automated, so everything – temperature, lighting, sound, alarms, electronics – can be controlled from anywhere in the home, or in the world, with just a smartphone or tablet,” says Manni Dhaliwal. Rounding out the main floor highlights is its central focal point: a two-sided gas fireplace with a cor-ten steel surround that will age to a rusty-orange patina. Trademark Homes took their attention to detail and design one step further, literally. The staircase leading to the second floor looks like bamboo, but is made of compressed sheets of plywood. It elevates the mundane chore of doing laundry to a nearpleasurable experience. Three bedrooms come equipped with an Italian wardrobe and closets with sliding barn doors, and their own bathrooms. The traditional walk-in closet is reimagined as an entire room devoted to clothing, shoes
and accessories. With nine-foot high closets, oversized mirrors, unique lighting, drawers and cubbyholes for shoes and purses, the room is both a functional and stylish space all its own.

Will Your Retirement Security Be Threatened by an Unfunded Shortfall in Your Defined Benefit Pension Plan?
T
housands of pensioners have seen their retirement incomes reduced and millions more are seeing their benefits squeezed or threatened. For example, look at the defined benefit plans of U. S. Steel Canada (formerly Stelco) or Nortel, the once-mighty telecom firm that went bankrupt in 2009. Both groups of pensioners are still waiting to see what they will receive. One thing is for certain - the pensions they will receive will be smaller than originally promised. Shortfalls can occur because the employer didn’t put in enough money, because employees didn’t put in enough money, because investment earnings were lower than expected, because retirees are living longer than expected, because the inflation rate is higher than expected, or any combination of these factors. In other words, with defined benefit pension plans it’s really easy to get some projections made decades in the past wrong and end up with a shortfall. Who could have foreseen 30 years ago how low interest rates would be today? A high profile example of this issue was the recent threat of a postage service work stoppage this past summer. The major concern was that Canada Post wanted new employees to receive a defined contribution pension while existing

workers retain the unaffordable defined benefit pension. The reported shortfall for Canada Post’s defined benefit pension as of the 1st quarter of 2016 was approximately $6.1 billion, up from about $3.4 billion only two years ago. With interest rates likely to remain low, the shortfall could continue to grow exponentially. Only in the province of New Brunswick does there seem to be an understanding and recognition that promises of retirement income are only as good as the savings that back them. New Brunswick now allows defined benefit pension plans to convert to shared-risk plans; this means that if projections show inadequate funds, benefits can fall. The actuaries provide a mathematical analysis of the financial condition of a pension plan. This report determines how much money the
When the actuary determines that current contribution levels combined with future investment income will be inadequate to provide the benefits promised by the Pension Plan, one of 4 things must happen: • Increase contributions • Increase investment returns which could increase risk • Delay the age at which unreduced benefits can be taken • Decrease benefits Members of defined benefit pension plans can no longer simply expect that the pension promised at age 60 or 65 on their annual pension statement is guaranteed to be there when they reach that age. Jess Rae Ayre, Amber Rose, and Michelle Anderson, collectively known as Winnipegbased folk/pop group Sweet Alibi, squish together on a backstage couch, trying to fit everyone in the frame of our FaceTime call. Soon the three ladies will be playing to a Saskatoon crowd as part of their cross-Canada tour with Jadea Kelly. But for now, we’re just trying to get the audio to work. Even when you can’t hear what’s being said, the chemistry of the trio is visually apparent comfortable conversation and smiles being had. Ayre and Anderson have been friends since high school, and met up with Rose while jamming over eight years ago. Loving each other’s sound, the ladies began singing together, and at the behest of their listeners, decided to form an official group. “We were going to go play an open mic show and thought we should probably make up a poster, but we didn’t have a name,” explains Rose, adding they asked for suggestions from friends. “Everyone just kept coming back with the word ‘sweet.’ But we felt like we needed something to balance that out, and came up with ’alibi.’ We felt it was the masculine to the sweet.” The group’s first album, a self-titled debut in 2011, was produced by Mitch Dorge, formerly
of the Crash Test Dummies, and sent them touring Canada, tightening up their writing skills, and perfecting their stage performance. As they gathered fans across the country and garnered more radio play, they embarked on a second album, We’ve Got To, in 2013. The record wasn’t defined by a genre, pulling elements of country, folk, pop, and even Motown into their textured harmonies. Perhaps what resonated with listeners the most were the group’s raw lyrics that pulled from themes such as addiction, cancer, and battling death. “We like to take struggles and turn them into songs,” explains Ayre, adding that the name of their third album, Walking in the Dark, comes from a song Rose wrote for her mother who had passed. But what might be one person’s darkness may be another’s light. Fans have told the trio that many of their songs have helped them through tumultuous times, and that it’s meant a lot to know they’re not alone. “That’s why we do it,” confides Anderson. Sweet Alibi has seen a lot of faces, spending more time on the road over the past five years than being home in Winnipeg. And, while sometimes tour life can be a little confining, they’ve learned a few skills along the way to help them cope.
“When we roll into a city we find the nearest thrift store,” says Rose, adding they actually do like to find off-stage experiences to do together to ensure it’s not all business all the time. “We’re a team of girls, it can be hard not to step on each other’s toes, but we’ve learned to realize when everyone needs their quiet time or space.” Back on stage, Sweet Alibi has built a reputation for both their stripped-down three-part harmony sets, as well as their toe-tapping musical performances that include some of Manitoba’s best backup musicians. All of these elements have culminated in several award nominations and wins, including a Canadian Folk Music award and Western Canadian Music awards. “Growing up I never won awards,” laughs Rose, admitting she didn’t even go to the first ceremony when they were nominated because she didn’t think they’d nab the honour. “Being appreciated feels good. Of course, it’s not why we do what we do; it’s just the cherry on top.” The call’s audio drops again, leaving just an image of all three ladies grinning at one another. That’s okay; the stage is calling.

Bach To The Future with FLÛTE ALORS! RECORDER QUARTET (Montreal) promises to be a dynamic and versatile evening (Jan 21). Death and the Maiden features the Cecilia String Quartet with a programme that includes Mendelssohn’s String Quartet in D major and Schubert’s String Quartet No. 14 in D minor, D. 810 “Death and the Maiden” (Feb 4). All performances take place at Eckhardt-Gramatté Hall at The University of Winnipeg. Winnipeg Jazz Orchestra - Mother Goose & Other Sweets features original arrangements by resident master Jeff Presslaff. The Funk Hunters, a Canadian electronic music act and DJ duo based in Vancouver, are coming to Funk The Halls at the Park Theatre (Dec 14). Starting January 14th, Folk for Families features local family performers that will have little ones singing, dancing, and learning, all while having fun. GroundSwell - Check out GroundSwell’s exciting exchange with the Berlin-based ensemble mosaic; founded in 1997 by a group of instrumentalists and composers in Berlin and has developed over the intervening years into a multifaceted and adventurous formation. They are now one of Germany’s most renowned ensembles for contemporary music (Feb 10). Performance takes place at EckhardtGramatté Hall.
DANCE Winnipeg’s Contemporary Dancers WCD’s Artistic Director Brent Lott premieres the much-anticipated As Though I Had Wings.
This new full-length work gives a voice to the censored, securing their place in history (Jan 5-8). The season continues with VERGE, wherein recent graduates and graduating dancers of the professional school program create with Brent Lott for only 5 weeks – an exciting WCD initiative! (Mar 3-5). Royal Winnipeg Ballet - What would the holiday season be without the RWB’s Nutcracker? This year, additional animal characters will be introduced that will add even more magic and excitement to this annual event (Dec 22-30). Next up in the ballet season is a Mixed Programme that includes Angles in the Architecture, set to the music of Aaron Copland’s Appalachian Spring and choreographed by Mark Godden. Also in the programme is Celts, choreographed in 1995 by Lisa York, the year before the Riverdance phenomenon hit North America (Jan 27-28). Acclaimed by audiences and critics across North America, Jean Grand-Maître’s Love Lies Bleeding is a mesmerizing multimedia ballet that fuses the joy of pop/rock with the breathtaking physicality of ballet. Le Cercle Molière - Le long voyage de Pierre-Guy traces the journey of a passionate percussionist returning home after having travelled the world (until Dec 3). In Moi, monsieur, moi!, a woman narrates the fate of a girl born in Senegal. Written and performed by Patricia Gomis, she dances, sings and bites into a dozen characters with humility and an authentic voice, transcending suffering and causing a whirlwind of laughter (Jan 12-28). Theatre Projects Manitoba - Written and performed by Cliff Cardinal, HUFF is the wrenching, yet darkly comic tale of Wind and his brothers, caught in a torrent of solvent abuse and struggling to cope with the death of their mother. hen it comes to music, Winnipeg is in an enviable position for a city of its size. We have extraordinary talent, we have appreciative audiences, and we have respect from performers the world over. Helping to earn this respect are events such as the incredible New Music Festival (NMF), a ‘must attend’ series that occurs in the dead of our frozen prairie winter to headline the city’s January / February cultural calendar. “It’s so unique. The Festival is a once a year exploration of the vibrancy of new works by the world’s leading contemporary composers,” says Alexander Mickelthwate, the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra (WSO) Music Director who conducts the 65 member ensemble over its 80 date yearly schedule. He suggests the NMF takes contemporary music a step further. Consider last year when the event hosted a performance that took place at the Pan Am Pool where musicians from the WSO were placed on the diving tower and synchronized swimmers plied the waters under a cloud of vapour. The piece was part of an evening themed “Music and Trauma” that featured Gavin Bryars’ The Sinking of the Titanic, a stunningly beautiful world-class work that few will forget. This year promises to take just as many artistic chances. “It’s all part of connecting the dots between more traditional classical works and the material that is being created now that speaks to us in a current context that is highly relevant,” says Mickelthwate. “Over the years, many of the works have been performed here first on stage in Winnipeg. This has been exciting for composers as well as audiences and performers. It’s part of the energy of the event.”

Building on last year’s concert at the Pan-Am Pool, the New Music Festival continues its exploration of alternative spaces and local histories, this time at the iconic Hudson’s Bay Building. Here, Winnipeg-based Sony Classical recording artist and Continuous Music pianist Lubomyr Melnyk will be presenting a new live music and film collaboration with Canada’s National Ballet based on the paintings of Group of Seven artist Lawren Harris. Organizers have also confirmed appearances by American experimentalist and avant-garde minimalist Meredith Monk and her singers. Icelander Hilmar Hilmarsson will present a world premiere based on the idea of the creation of the universe and the birth of language. Ben Shemie of Suuns will present a new work involving audience participation using multiple radios, and Festival Curator Matthew Patton will present a new work for strings and voices. More, former bassist of grunge band Hole and co-founder and director of Basilica Hudson, Melissa Auf der Mar, will bring a 12-hour Drone piece to the Duncan Arena (55 Duncan Street in the Exchange). Expect to discover a number of headliners contributing here to Auf der Mar’s immersive happening that starts at midnight following the close of the last performance at the Centennial Concert Hall. Women composers will also have a strong presence at this year’s New Music Festival. The Cecilia String Quartet will perform two new commissions and Alexina Louie will give the world premiere of her new Piano Quintet. According to Mickelthwate, this year’s series percolates around the celebration of Canada’s 150th birthday. “Canada is a country of many cultures and we will show this off with a range of new works by Canadians who originated elsewhere. For example, there is work from Tajik-Canadian composer, Farangis Nurulla-Khoja, who will offer “L’infini de l’instant,” and Sri Lankan-born Canadian, Dinuk Widjeratne, who scored for table, a rarely heard solo instrument,” he says, adding that there will also be new music by Canadian Cree composer Andrew Balfour, as well as Metis composer, Eliot Britton, who will present a world premiere commission for orchestra and electronics.

Prairie Theatre Exchange Welcomes New Education Director -- Loc Lu I sat down with Loc Lu, the new School and Outreach Director for Prairie Theatre Exchange’s Theatre & Film School located in the heart of Winnipeg’s downtown. The program, geared towards both adults and children, offers a variety of classes that range from acting for stage, film and T.V., to improv to theatre production to musical theatre, to movement and more! It turns out that the school has been running as long as the theatre –44 years! Loc Lu, what can you tell us about the history of P.T.E.’s longstanding education program? The last 10 years was under the leadership of our previous school director John Lowe. [He] came in and established a really great foundation for recreational and pre-professional training. We have some of the best space here coupled with some of the best artists and teachers. We bring in a wide range of students. Some come here to have a wonderful two-hour experience per week in a specific class, others come here to learn about how to break into the film scene or how to prepare for an audition. We certainly have the calibre of programming and teachers to help with both recreational and professional streams. What is your background in theatre education programming? This is my 17th season as a drama educator. I taught as a private contractor for many places, including Manitoba Theatre for Young People. I found I had a mind for programming; that I could see the bigger picture, and how certain classes could tie into a whole philosophy of theatre education. I was fortunate to work with MTYP as an outreach drama coordinator for five seasons. That was a huge part of my growth. I picked up a lot of skills and knowledge about the community, and worked with a lot of school and community groups. All that experience carried me forward to be able to step into this position here at P.T.E. Who teaches at PTE Theatre + Film? Something we really pride ourselves on is bringing in artists who are fully working and considered professionals in the community. For example, we have Hope McIntyre teaching playwriting, Arne MacPherson conducting our Young Company and Shakespeare classes, and Erin McGrath is doing her Musical Cabaret classes. (The list goes on!) These are all artists producing in their field and students get to have direct access to them - it is a beautiful cycle. What sort of future developments would you like to see for PTE Theatre + Film school? I definitely want to continue building upon the foundation and quality that John Lowe has set. I am also excited to get into work that I am passionate about, like Physical Theatre and Devised Theatre. I think these forms are really engaging for new audiences and can carry us forward into a new generation of theatre producers and patrons.

¾ cup (175 mL) butter 2 cups (500 mL) sugar 3 eggs 2 tsp (10 mL) vanilla 1 cup mashed banana 3 cups (750 mL) flour ½ tsp (2 mL) salt 1 ½ tsp (7 mL) baking soda 1 ½ cups (375 mL) buttermilk ¾ cup (175 mL) finely chopped dates ½ cup (125 mL) mini chocolate chips ½ cup (125 mL) finely chopped pecans Sliced bananas Whipped Cream Preheat oven to 350°F (175 °C). Grease and flour a Bundt pan. In a large bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy, about 5 minutes. Add eggs one at a time. Beat well after each addition. Beat in vanilla and mashed banana. In a separate medium bowl, sift dry ingredients. Alternate adding the dry ingredient mixture with the buttermilk to the butter mixture; ending with the dry ingredients. Beat well. Stir in dates, chocolate chips and pecans. Pour into prepared pan. Bake for 50 to 60 minutes or until toothpick, when inserted into the cake, comes out clean. Serve cake with sliced bananas and whipped cream. Makes 10-12 slices
Zucchini Bake 5 medium zucchinis, thinly sliced 1 large onion, diced 2 cups (500 mL) all-purpose flour 1 tbsp (15 mL) baking powder ½ tsp (2 mL) salt 2 cups (500 mL) grated Old Cheddar cheese 6 eggs, beaten 2 3 cup (150 mL) canola oil 2 tbsp (25 mL) chopped fresh oregano ½ tsp (2 mL) pepper ½ -1 tsp (2-5 mL) garlic powder Preheat oven to 350°F (180°C). Prepare vegetables. Measure flour, baking powder and salt into a very large mixing bowl. Stir in shredded Cheddar cheese. In separate bowl, beat eggs well. Beat in vegetable oil, oregano, pepper and garlic powder. Add egg mixture to flour mixture and mix well. Stir in zucchini slices and diced onion. Spread mixture into 9 x 13 inch (23 cm x 33 cm) baking dish sprayed with non-stick spray. Bake 50 – 60 minutes until golden. Makes 6-8 servings For nutrient analysis visit eggs.mb.ca

DIRECTIONS: Preheat oven to 325°F (160°C). Remove neck and giblets and lift skin away from the breast and thighs carefully, not tearing it. Combine ingredients: garlic, butter, fresh poultry herbs, onion, Dijon mustard, sea salt and black pepper. Tuck seasoning mixture between skin and meat, spreading it as much as possible; put any extra seasoning inside the cavity. Rub the skin with olive oil. Place turkey on a wire rack in the roasting pan so the juices are able to drain. Cover the top of the turkey loosely with foil. Place in oven. ABC The Lexicon of Love II (Virgin) “Is heartache really your profession?” asks singer Martin Fry in “Confessions of a Fool.” Heartache has paid well for him. In 1982, Fry and ABC made their audacious debut with The Lexicon of Love – sardonic but heartfelt songs, raised to towering heights by producer Trevor Horn and keyboard player/ arranger Anne Dudley. Horn is absent this time, along with Fry’s former band, but The Lexicon of Love II picks up smartly, with Fry in fine voice, smart new songs and Dudley not merely upholstering the songs but also using strings and brass to expand and drive them; the sumptuous “Kiss Me Goodbye” will compel as many to the dance floor as the tissue box. The ever-alert Fry remains open to the most delicious influences, from the delicate Motown woodwinds that open “The Flames of Desire” to John Barry’s spy-movie soundtracks in “I Believe in Love.”
TOY Yello (Polydor/Universal) The Swiss duo of Dieter Meier (voice) and Boris Blank (electronics) is so adept at creating new sound worlds it seemed our elegant men disappeared into one nine years ago. Toy shows they haven’t lost their rakish edge. Where many of their previous albums toggled uneasily between songs and sonic landscapes, the new one holds its balance for an hour, albeit with a little weirdness in the last stretch of the 17-track deluxe edition. Meier is 71 now, and his speak-sing voice is closer to Leonard Cohen’s occasional growl than anything resembling proper pop vocalizing, and while that adds interesting sandpaper to his roguish wit and lonely songs (beginning with “Limbo,” the first single), newcomers will be glad for the guest female singers. Blank orchestrates with such detail (sampled marimba, electric piano, etc.) it’s easy to forget he conjures all from synthesizers, and astounding to consider he’s wholly self-taught as a musician. Small wonder Swiss Post is honouring them – really – with a commemorative stamp.

He’s 74 now, and no fan expects John Cale to go gently. It’s a jolt, even so, to hear him revisiting his starkest album. Music for a New Society stunned in 1982 with its bare bones and open nerve ends. Here, he stripped his most arresting ballad, “I Keep a Close Watch,” to skeletal essentials. That was only the beginning. The album returns now, paired with M:Fans, a new imagining of the album. “Close Watch” and the equally charming “Chinese Envoy” return as chirpy pop tunes, but the prevailing mood is dark, looming and claustrophobic. Newcomers should begin with the peerless Paris 1919, but there’s ample light and shade here.

This YA novel by illustrator and writer Frank Viva is a fish-out-of-water story where our hero learns that a summer by the sea might not be so bad after all. Misuzu, one of Japan’s most beloved children’s poets, is little known outside of her native country. Even in Japan, her delightful, quirky miniatures of the natural world were long lost until just a few years ago. This picture book, beautifully illustrated by Toshikado Hajiri, combines translations of her work (by Sally Ito and Michiko Tsuboi) with the ultimately tragic story of Misuzu’s life, in a narrative by David Jacobson. A children’s book that adults will appreciate as well.

Neighbourhoods of Bridgwater features designs from range of builders
W
hen buying a home, most homeowners look for a design that meets their needs. Some want to create a design that is reflective of their personal style. The Neighbourhoods of Bridgwater offer those options and more because Manitoba Housing has not only included a range of builders that specialize in distinctive designs, but has also incorporated meaningful design guidelines that offer more attention to detail. “When we were envisioning what the Neighbourhoods of Bridgwater would look like, the idea was to create a new kind of neighbourhood that would promote healthy living, which we have done through our extensive park trails that connect the neighbourhoods,” says Dwayne Rewniak, Executive Director, Housing Delivery/ Land Development, Manitoba Housing. “At the same time, we wanted to offer diversity in the style and design of the homes that are available in the four neighbourhoods. We have done that through a complement of 17 designated homebuilders.” Bridgwater Forest, the first neighbourhood to be developed, features striking architectural detailed homes built on a variety of lots, including back lanes. Interspersed through 25 acres of mature forest, the neighbourhood includes a mix of single and multi-family dwellings. “We’ve sold 1,090 single-family homes in Bridgwater Forest, and only have a few lots remaining in this neighbourhood,” Rewniak says, adding that he expects this neighbourhood to be fully occupied by 2017.
Homes in Bridgwater Lakes blend traditional style with modern architectural features. This neighbourhood also offers a variety of lot types, which include large laneless lots that feature custom homes with lake lots and walkout basements built by builders such as Arlt, Artista, Gino’s, Hearth, Huntington, KDR and Maric; regular laneless lots, which are constructed by volume builders such as A&S, Discovery, Hilton, Qualico, Randall, and Kensington; and smaller lots on back lanes, built by builders such as Signature and Ventura, Rewniak explains. “The smaller laned lots provide a more affordable price point, as well as diversity that ranges from single-family homes to a mixture of multifamily homes that include rentals, townhouses and condos,” he says. To date, 875 single-family lots have been sold in Bridgwater Lakes, and about 700 homes are occupied. Bridgwater Trails, with its extensive park and trail system, is the newest residential neighbourhood and offers the largest number of singlefamily and multi-family units. “Bridgwater Trails consists of 1,031 single-family homes, with some lots in Phases 3 and 4 being converted to duplex lots,” Rewniak says. About 380 singlefamily lots have been sold, and more than 200 occupied. A total of 22 new showhomes have opened in Bridgwater Trails. The showhomes include nine laneless showhomes on Del Monica Road, eight
laned showhomes also on Del Monica Road, and five custom showhomes on Rose Lake Court. “Each one of the 17 designated homebuilders has a showhome in at least one lot category in Bridgwater Trails,” Rewniak points out, adding that the Neighbourhoods of Bridgwater had a total of 28 showhomes, and all were represented in the Fall 2016 Parade of Homes. The 50-acre park in Bridgwater Trails is still under development, and it is expected that the hilltop lookout will be completed in 2017, Rewniak states. The sports field for baseball and volleyball and basketball courts are all in, and the Phase 1 children’s play area is also complete. The fountain, located at the centre of Bridgwater Trails, is situated on a hilltop so it provides a good vantage point for the neighbourhood, Rewniak notes. “We expect it will be like the fountain at Bridgwater Lakes, which is a gathering point for the neighbourhood.” Bridgwater Centre’s residential and commercial developments continue, with showhomes ready for viewing, Rewniak says. Hilton’s showhome is located on Park West Drive and A&S Homes has two showhomes in Bridgwater Centre located on 243 and 247 Park East Drive. Save-On-Foods, scheduled to open its doors in November, offers grocery and produce ranging from meats and vegetables to baked goods. Since the grocery store will be central to all the Bridgwater neighbourhoods, residents will be able to walk or bike there. A Manitoba Liquor Mart is also scheduled to open in December, as well as RBC Financial, Rewniak states, indicating he expects an announcement will be made regarding plans for additional commercial ventures by year’s end.

of condos in Bridgwater, but its development in the area isn’t even close to over. At writing time, the proposed name for its newest project - Elevate Condominiums - was pending approval. The mix of contemporary material and natural wood gives this Kitchen Craft custom-designed kitchen the warmth it needed to blend seamlessly with H. Albers Builders Ltd.’s new showhome at 119 Coneflower Crescent in Sage Creek. “The Harwood Foundation has been set up to help support smaller, local charities and causes that often have needs that may not be addressed by the bigger foundations. Causes like helping families pay for sports equipment they would not otherwise be able to afford; medical emergencies for families whose kids require costly medical treatments or need to travel for medical care; helping families get back on their feet after a devastation like a fire or loss of parents,” he explains, adding that most of the funds for the Harwood Foundation are acquired by removing and selling the demolished and salvaged materials from the homes they work on. Designer Mia Parres and Master Contractor Rob Evans of HGTV’s The Expandables are real world renovation pros that take home projects to higher planes. We asked Rob and Mia a few questions to help set the tone for their date here in Winnipeg. Here’s what they told us. Q: Why should the public attend events such as Renovation Shows? Mia: Renovation and design shows are a fabulous way for the public to connect with real vendors, trades, like-minded people and most importantly, professionals. It’s the best way to streamline the questions that you may have for your own personal projects, or upcoming dreams, and have professionals guide you in the right direction. Rob: The average homeowner doesn’t know a lot about the build and renovation world, especially when it comes to new products and services that aren’t carried in their local big box store. Renovation shows are a tremendous opportunity for them to see all these things in one location, while having an informed spokesperson explain the product or service to them.
Q: Where does the public find the most challenge in home reno projects? Mia: I find most of my clients get stuck in the planning process, which is where budget and design meet. They have big dreams for their renovations, and are too overwhelmed by the process and the tiny details and planning. That’s where it is great to integrate a professional contractor and designer and have someone help guide them in the right direction.
Rob: Weirdly, I tell me clients to dream big, realistically of course, but big. I would rather try to rein them in than stifle the process in the beginning. Yes, budgets have to be kept in check, but I want clients to be wowed by their new space and excited with the finished product.
Rob: Homeowners tend to neglect the communication skills of their contractor. This is a person that you are trusting with your biggest investment in an area where you may have very little expertise. You need to be able to voice any concern to your contractor, be heard, and get resolution to the issue or question. You need to trust and get along with your contractor. Q: Head or heart - When you start on a project from where should the inspiration come? Mia: With my clients, I always start with my head. I love to be inspired by their dreams, but I also want to be practical with what they need and how they want their lives to function.
