the agenda Welcome to Style’s Winter 2018 edition! We are delighted to present The Celtic Tenors as our cover story this issue, perfectly timed with the holidays ahead when the trio brings the soul of the season to town. Kelly Gray had the opportunity to speak with all three tenors for Songs from the Heart, reflecting on their worldwide success and the influences that shaped their musical repertoire. On the home front, Carly Peters captures the essence of a custom crafted contemporary home in The Rule of Three, while top flooring trends for 2019 are covered in Well Grounded. Along with Style’s regular design and décor columns, we have included a special section on renovations, with a sampling of what consumers can expect from local
companies with booths at the upcoming Winnipeg Renovation Show. Held at the RBC Convention Centre from January 11-13, the show provides an excellent opportunity for those considering a reno to find industry experts and great sources for related products and services. I’ve gone through the renovation process at least four times now, giving me personal insight on what projects like these entail. There’s no question about it – home renovations can be very stressful. No matter how large or small, a reno project will have an impact on your family. There will be dust and disorder, along with tradespeople coming and going until the work is complete. However, with well considered forward planning, and good communication with the contractor and / or trades involved, you can mitigate the chaos substantially. Following are a few solid tips on how to ease the stress throughout the remodelling process: 1) Do Your Homework – Come up with solid plans that include drawings with precise measurements. The drawings will be your most valuable tool for getting the job done right (well worth the money). Research contractors if you want someone else to manage the project, viewing previous work they’ve done and checking their references carefully. The same applies to tradespeople if you’re managing your own reno. You want to hire only those who can execute the work to your standards, within budget and on schedule.
2) Set the Timeline - Before the reno begins, get the schedule in place with your your contractor / tradespeople. A good contractor will establish the order of various aspects of work, schedule the trades and try to minimize the time you are without water or power, etc. Consider your family’s needs when setting timelines to ensure the least disruption possible for your household. With a schedule in place, you will know what to expect and when. 3) Choose Supplies & Finishes – Decisions should be made ahead of time on literally everything (fixtures, fittings, finishes, flooring, etc.) to avoid supply and construction delays, extra expenses and high pressure hasty decisions that you may regret later. 4) Have a contingency budget to cover extra, unexpected costs (there’s always something!) A good rule of thumb is to add 15% to the overall budget. 5) Visit the Winnipeg Renovation Show for expert advice and to find almost everything you need for a reno project!

Schulz Construction crafts a contemporary home with a classic design rule in mind

ur brains just love odd numbers. They challenge us mentally; make things more dynamic and natural to the eye. As you look through 17 Tadman Crescent, you can see how Schulz Construction Inc. has harnessed the power of three – an age-old design tenet – to create a vibrant, bright, modern home that not only has visual appeal but offers up thoughtful amenities and elements that apply to this theory. The idea to create a contemporary exterior set against the natural surroundings of the Crystal Lake neighbourhood in Oakbank came from co-owner Peter Schulz. While scrolling through one of his favourite sources of inspiration, he was inspired to mix angled shapes and natural elements, such as the charcoal brick, with manufactured materials. The cedar-look panels, which are in fact aluminum siding, and acrylic stucco make the exterior virtually maintenancefree for the homeowner, and offer a hint of the interior design found within. The 11-foot ceiling of the home’s entryway is the first indication of this light and bright space. The tiled flooring sprawls out with enough room for a sitting bench and an extra large coat closet, complete with rolling door, before leading up to just a few steps into the main floor’s open areas. The first point of focus is undoubtedly the kitchen’s large island. The three-inch thick quartz counter with waterfall edges was supplied by Ital-Stone Design, adding to the volume and heft of the island, which offers up seating for three on one side, while the other houses soft-closing drawers and hidden appliances, like the dishwasher. The stove hood fan is also conveniently tucked away under the natural cabinetry that harkens back to the exterior wood tone.
The modern exterior features a mix of maintenance-free materials including charcoal brick, acrylic stucco, and aluminum siding that has the look of cedar planks.

The tri-coloured kitchen features clean-lined maple cabinetry, constructed and installed by Silverpine Cabinets, in white, charcoal, and a natural wood.
The thick quartz countertop with waterfall edge was supplied by Ital-Stone Design and ties the island to the kitchen’s back-splash, which also features the light coloured, but hefty stone.
This is just one of three hues (remember that design rule) in the kitchen, which also boasts clean-lined white cabinets surrounding the stunning quartz back-splash and stove, and matte charcoal grey cabinetry from Silverpine Cabinets that help the black stainless steel appliances to blend in. Just off the kitchen, an airy dining space features a bank of horizontal windows and fullglass door leading to the covered deck. Just like the exterior finishes, the deck, which features metal railings with glass inserts, is constructed from maintenance-free materials, including the cedar-look siding. Back inside, the great room’s unique halfvault ceiling soars up to 17 feet at its highest, boasting transom windows in the upper portion allowing light to filter through the entire main living space. Another trio of horizontal windows illuminates the area’s custom details. The linear electric fireplace is set inside a floorto-ceiling stone surround reminiscent of the charcoal bricks on the exterior, and is offset by the custom entertainment wall created from 24 by 12-inch custom wood panels which tie the natural colour from the kitchen into the space. The light, maple entertainment centre cabinetry features closed storage, while three custombuilt shelves offer an opportunity to display key pieces of décor.
Even before Schulz Construction Inc. was formed, Bartel Drywall worked with Peter and David Schulz on all their homes, and continues to do this important work in every one of the homebuilder’s current projects.
The rooms are tied together by the engineered hardwoods that flow throughout the main level, including the master suite, an airy space that continues to use light wood and colour palettes for a bright finish.
The master’s ensuite bathroom features an abundance of amenities to create a comfortable, warm atmosphere. The clean-lined, maple veneer vanity with dual sinks and mirrors matches the trio of large shelves, keeping the

area open and bright. On the other side of the room, the freestanding soaker tub lets you sink into the suds under a modern, multi-pronged lighting fixture. And, when you step out of the custom glass shower with tile surround, your toes will be toasty warm, thanks to the in-floor heated tiles. The master suite is completed with a large walk-in closet featuring custom wood shelving and additional functional storage options. The main floor of the 1,485-squarefoot bungalow also includes another large bedroom and bathroom. The bathroom offers a tub surround, quartz counters, maple cabinetry, and a unique accent piece – hexagonal porcelain tiles alongside the mirror to match the flooring in the space – giving the light coloured room some depth and dimension.

With eight-foot ceilings, the rooms feel vast but are warmed by the ultra-practical heated, coloured concrete floors, a signature Schulz Construction Inc. element. The open room is perfect for an entertainment and games area; a gathering space for the residents of the lower level’s two additional bedrooms. The space also features a three-piece bathroom that includes a five-foot, walk-in shower, and large, quartz-topped vanity. It’s wonderful that Style Manitoba has managed to stay the course over the past 20-something years. I’m always happy to receive my copy in the mailbox. Publishing has never been an industry for the faint at heart, even more so since entering the current era of digital media. While many have ceased producing printed magazines, Style has managed to straddle both worlds with a robust presence online in addition to a healthy distribution of printed copies. Call me a purist, but I still find a well laid out printed magazine chockfull of good ideas, wonderful photography and interesting information far superior to anything one can find online. Please keep the printed copies coming!

innipeg gets an early Christmas present this year when the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra (WSO), under the baton of guest conductor Martin MacDonald, meets up with The Celtic Tenors for a slate of performances this December 14-16 at the Centennial Concert Hall. Christmas With the Celtic Tenors promises to ring in the season with the trio’s blend of traditional classics, pop standards and works from the Celtic songbook.
The Celtic Tenors have sold millions of recordings and perform upwards of 100 shows a year at locations all over the globe. These Winnipeg dates come at the end of the first part of a Canadian tour that has them packing houses from Halifax to Southern Ontario to Winnipeg. “There will be a little bit of everything for everyone,” says Omagh, Northern Ireland tenor Daryl Simpson, a well-lettered classically trained opera singer who was recently accorded a BEM (British Empire Medal) when Buckingham Palace announced the Queen’s 2018 New Year’s honours list for his work in community relations, and peace and reconciliation In Northern Ireland. “People can expect songs that cross the divide, from classic to opera and a few surprises in between. Our shows bring in all ages. We are

seeing three generations sitting in our audiences and this is something very rare today to find a show that covers so much ground,” he says. Tenor James Nelson adds that they will cover favourites such as the “Wexford Carol” and “Home for Christmas” as well as other tunes such as “Four Strong Winds”- the Ian Tyson penned Canadian classic. Nelson, a singer with some 50 operatic roles and a broad repertoire to his credit, describes himself as a lover of jazz and pop. “Our new album references artists such as Dolly Parton and Bob Dylan,” he says, mentioning that the group has recorded 12 discs over the years since they got together in 2000 and signed with EMI. “There is something very appealing about three male voices reaching up for that high note and finding it,” says James, who characterizes their sound as a blend of vibrato with big octane C’s and quiet moments. Matthew Gilsenan describes himself as the only typical Irish Catholic of the three. ‘Gilly’ is from the south in Kells in County Meath, and is dipped in the full bath of Irish tradition. “A lot of what happens at Christmas takes me right back to when I was just a kid and studying at the Convent of the Sisters of Mercy. In our shows we try to tap into the essence of Christmas and we like to do some of the songs
we grew up with. Yes, we will be doing “Oh, Holy Night” and “Silent Night” but we will look to other areas as well, and will go beyond Christmas.” He remarks that the performance can be very emotional. “But, it’s not saccharine. These songs run deep and there is much for people to feel. We see ourselves as a bridge for the audience and there is a very real emotional back and forth with this music that is so well known and loved.” Matthew mentions here that the show also offers a lot of good humour and lively banter, with the performers showing an easy working relationship on stage that puts audiences in a casual mood. “We’ve been together now for quite some time and we are very comfortable joking about on stage. We really take audiences on a journey that is both familiar and wondrous. The Winnipeg New Music Festival opens with Bramwell Tovey conducting John Adams’ Harmonielehre – the work that first opened the festival in 1991. Plus Pulitzer Prize-winner Caroline Shaw’s sophomore appearance at WNMF and this time she brings her astounding ensemble, Roomful of Teeth (Jan 26-Feb 1). Festival du Voyageur is Western Canada’s largest winter festival meeting historical characters from Fort Gibraltar, with snow sculptures created by artists from around the world, dancing and jigging to lively music, delicious French-Canadian food and so much more! (Feb 15–24).
Winnipeg Renovation Show with a guest appearance from Mike Holmes, Jr.. Ibsen’s realist masterpiece resonates more than a century after the debut of Nora Helmer, whose bourgeois illusions are shattered by the realization that she’s merely a doll in her own home. A story of great love, deceit and discovery, A Doll’s House broke ground and caused widespread scandal when it was first produced. (Jan 30-Feb 16). Next up is Made In Italy, written and performed by Farren Timoteo. It’s the 1970s and Francesco Martini is the only kid in his Jasper school with a three-piece suit and a lunchbox full of cured meats and aged cheeses. Torn between his father’s deep Italian roots and the desire to adapt to his new country, Francesco fights his way to a new identity, with John Travolta as his model. Will the family bond survive Francesco’s rise to fame as Frank Martin? In this funny and charming one-man play, the journey from Abruzzo to Alberta is rife with twists and turns (Feb 27 - March 16). The Winnipeg Jewish Theatre presents Intimate Apparel by Pulitzer Prize winning playwright Lynn Nottage, the story of Esther, an African American seamstress living in a New York City boarding house for women, sewing elegant undergarments for socialites and prostitutes. Searching for love and a life outside of the boarding house, she agrees to marry George, a charming Caribbean islander, even though her heart lies with a Jewish shopkeeper she can never be with (Feb 2 - 10). Destination: Tasty The fall winds blew and the overcast skies suggested more cold rain. This was the backdrop to a night out at Passero / Corto at The Forks Market where the new fall/winter menu has just premiered. The new 25-item menu is replete with dishes that offer comfort in these chilly times. Passero / Corto is a 45-seat (a few more at the tasting bar) adult casual expression of master chef Scott Bagshaw. Bagshaw is well known for local Enoteca, a highly acclaimed small plate restaurant that is among Canada’s top tables. With Passero / Corto, the team has taken much from the style and temper of Enoteca and delivered it with high flair among the other assembled establishments that surround The Forks Market Hall. Meals at Passero / Corto are shared with dishes coming in small plate portion sizes. Here, amid the unique contemporary décor, it’s all about flavours and building on the last dish to a crescendo of ‘Wow!’ Certainly this was our experience. We started with an inspired spritely salad of tomatoes, citrus, plum and buffalo mozzarella with charred bread, basil and Calabrian vinaigrette that was an awesome set-up for the meal in total. The server informed us that the heirloom flavour-bomb tomatoes are from local Greenland Gardens, a supplier that remains in use till winter snows have the kitchen source from BC. Next, we turned to a roasted beet, crème fraiche, quinoa and grapefruit with fennel, beet crumble and dill salad that uses beets three ways, and discovered a dish that screams fall comfort. Presented in a dark grey large serving bowl, the beauty of deep purple veggies was a sight to consider before the delight of citrus and fennel flavours reached the palate.
Passero / Corto offers a wide slate of pasta and even accommodates those who seek gluten-free options. We ordered Gnocchetti - squash and pine nut with brown butter and cheddar - and were impressed with the balance of flavor, as well as the perfectly cooked pasta. The same was true for the vegetable dish we shared. We ordered fried Brussels sprouts, horseradish mascarpone and apple mostarda with hemp hearts, walnut and mint and were simply blown away by flavours that married all the way through each juicy sprout. For entrees, we chose the 24-hour short rib, roasted mushrooms, tallegio with shallot and jus, as well as the lobster, prawns and mussels with saffron, leek, baby potato and aioli. Of the two, the short rib was preferred at our table. A single taste laden cube of boneless perfection, the short rib could well have been the star attraction of the meal. However, like a great sports team, it’s not really about one player. The other dishes compounded their flavours into a tower of performance that had us smiling from behind our after dinner espresso. Great flavour, great atmosphere, great service.

Buttermilk Pie 1 cup (250 mL) sugar 3 tbsp (45 mL) flour 3 eggs ¾ cup (175 mL) buttermilk ¼ cup (50 mL) butter, melted and cooled 1 tbsp (15 mL) lemon juice Zest of lemon 1 tsp (5 mL) vanilla 1 purchased graham cracker pie crust Fresh fruit for garnish (optional) Preheat oven to 350° F (180°C). In a medium bowl, combine sugar and flour. Beat in eggs, buttermilk, butter, lemon juice, zest and vanilla with electric mixer at medium speed until smooth. Pour into crust. Bake 35-40 minutes or until set. Cool completely on wire rack. Refrigerate 2 hours or until ready to serve. Top with fresh fruit or whipped cream, if desired. Makes 8 servings
Thai Egg and Noodle Salad 4 ½ ounces (125 g) thin rice stick noodles (about ½ package), cooked, drained and cooled ¼ tsp (1 mL) salt 1 pkg - 200 g/7 oz. snow peas, trimmed and cut julienne 1½ cups (375mL) fresh bean sprouts 3 green onions, sliced diagonally ½ small English cucumber, thinly sliced 2 small carrots, julienned 1 small red pepper, julienned 6 eggs, hard-cooked, quartered lengthwise Peanut dressing (see recipe below) ½ cup (125 mL) peanuts 2 tbsp (30 mL) fresh mint, chopped 1 tbsp (15 mL) sesame seeds, toasted In an extra-large salad bowl, toss noodles and vegetables; transfer to large serving platter. DAVID BOWIE Welcome to the Blackout (Live London ’78) (Parlophone/Universal) The posthumous David Bowie industry continues, mainly through pricy box sets (currently, the only way to get live recordings from the Serious Moonlight and Glass Spider tours, which reached Winnipeg). Welcome to the Blackout, released as a stand-alone doubledisc set, makes a lighter demand on the mortgage money, but is also a specialist item, being essentially a mirror of Stage (still available) from the same era. It was a strange time of uneven compromise, when performing the terse songs and abstract instrumentals from the Low and Heroes albums meant pulling out older live favourites as well from as far back as his Ziggy Stardust days. Depending on personal taste, the fast-forward button will come in handy for the brooding synthetic strings of “Warszawa” or the bar room rock of “Suffragette City.” But “Station to Station,” supercharged by Adrian Belew’s wild guitar and Roger Powell’s locomotive synthesizer, could unite both teams.

VAN DER GRAAF GENERATOR Do Not Disturb (Esoteric/Antenna) (Import) This is where progressive rock can go after 50 years. Van der Graaf Generator continues as a trio, and though David Jackson’s commanding saxophones are missed, Hugh Banton (keyboards, bass guitar), Guy Evans (drums) and leader Peter Hammill have honed a tough, inarguable sound, old-fashioned and yet current, where the trickiest passages are harnessed to Hammill’s astute song writing (“So now I’m in a parlous place/Repenting at leisure for what I did in haste”). At 70, Hammill has earned his nostalgia, but he’s not going gently anywhere. “Alfa Berlina” – not a car ad – has a whiff of that, but the music hammers. Sometimes, indeed, the music is surprisingly heavy, but sudden shifts in texture and temperature abound, with hard rock cooling to something close to jazz. Banton’s organ mastery is stirring in this age of digital keyboards, and he surprises further with his turn on accordion for the cinematic instrumental, “Shigata Ga Nai.”
PACO DE LUCIA Five Original Albums (Mercury/Universal) There was always more feel than flash to the late flamenco guitarist Paco de Lucia, though he was never short on the flash. This budget-priced set encloses five astounding albums from the ‘70s and would be a bargain for his tribute to Manuel de Falla alone, with a sizzling take on “Ritual Fire Dance” accelerated by flute and percussion. A live album from 1975 is equally stunning, while the Almoraima album, cut one year later, is a masterclass in pacing, with “Llanos Del Real” a graceful close after several breathtaking performances. A detailed booklet would go nicely with the miniature LP sleeves, but at the retail price of a single CD, this is irresistible. (Universal has stoked temptation by drawing on its Verve and Blue Note riches for similar packets, including a superb Herbie Hancock collection.)

resh out of university, Megan McGhie had plans to take her Bachelor’s degree in Clothing and Textiles from the U of M and move to Paris, learn French, and then return to Canada to work in Quebec’s alluring fashion industry. Instead of turning heads in the fashion world, McGhie, the general manager of Singletons Hair Care, is leading a major makeover in the hairstyling biz. And when the Winnipeg-born business owner is done transforming the salon, customers won’t recognize the new Singletons. So it would appear that everything really does happen for a reason, she says. “I saw so much potential in the business,” says McGhie, who started doing payroll in the family-owned business more than 10 years ago. “I think customers are going to be surprised. We still offer incredible value, and you will have an amazing experience.” The perfect mix of business savvy and style (with perfect hair, obviously!), McGhie is the mastermind behind the “reimagining” of the 37-year-old family business; transitioning it from a quick-service shop to a full-service salon, comparable to trendy salons. She co-owns Singletons with her brother, Tyler McGhie,who focuses on the finances. Their grandfather, Adelbert George Singleton McGhie (aka “Kit”), started Singletons in 1981, and although he’s no longer around to see how far his grandchildren have taken the business, there’s no doubt he’d be impressed. Walking through the new flagship location at 139 Market Avenue, which is also the 13th location in Canada, it’s obvious this is no longer McGhie’s grandfather’s salon – it’s spacious, welcoming and chic. She proudly talks about the company’s history as one of the only familyowned salons that’s been in business for multiple generations, and where she hopes to take it. Selecting a spot in Winnipeg’s Exchange District was a very strategic move on their part that sets the tone for what customers can come to expect from the “new” Singletons; it’s a fresh, fashion-forward take on nearly four decades of experience in the industry. It’s a dramatic transformation, but the purpose is simple: to help others feel good about themselves by providing a great experience, the Singletons Way. “In the past, whenever a customer would come in, the stylist would say ‘Oh, just a haircut today?’ and it was never just a haircut,” says McGhie. “A haircut is just a fraction of the experience. A good haircut can transform someone’s day; it can give them the confidence to ask that girl out or raise their hand in class. A good hair day can change someone’s perspective, their mood and have an effect on other people,” she adds.

“It’s really important to us to build trust and build relationships with our customers, and that starts with empowering our staff and making sure this is a positive environment for them,” notes McGhie. Leaning on her vast retail experience, McGhie wants to provide staff with not just the technical skills, but also the soft skills needed to expand their career. The Market Avenue location is large enough to host professional development events, not just for Singletons staff, but also for any stylists looking to grow and learn new skills. “In Winnipeg, we tend to get passed over and don’t get the big industry events that larger cities do,” she says. “With this new location, we have the space to host events. I want to support stylists to achieve higher levels of success and create a place where stylists want to make a career.”
That includes personal coaching and encouraging stylists to set and achieve their own performance goals so they have control over their own careers. In the long run, McGhie even aspires to open a school that provides more opportunities for stylists who want to be successful in the industry. But for now, the goal is to focus on transitioning the other locations (ten in Winnipeg and two in Edmonton) to create the same experience as the Market Avenue salon, all while building positive customer experiences. “I hope customers feel positive, more positive than when they walked in,” says McGhie. “I hope they find increased confidence, and inspiration to take on a challenge. Because it’s never JUST a haircut!”

uilder R&B Homes’ new midblock project on Queenston St. in Winnipeg’s River Heights community exemplifies the quality of upscale infill, where new home clients get all the benefits of an insightful modern design as well as the traditions and qualities of a long established neighbourhood. Nadi Design, an award-winning landscape architecture, urban design and planning consultancy selected R&B Homes to custom build this spectacular residence. According to Winnipeg-based architect Emeka Nnadi, principal of Nadi Design, the six-bedroom, four-bath Queenston St. property is one where a number of influences came together. “We resisted the urge to create an ultra modern design. Rather, we sought to create a design that worked with the elements of the other homes in the area while achieving the needs of the client,” says Emeka. He remarks that the design is one where modern meets traditional. For example, Nadi Design went with a more

standard pitched roofline rather a flat roof. They also utilized lap wood siding that is more in keeping with the existing neighbourhood homes. “I looked to the beauty and symmetry of Frank Lloyd Wright’s prairie style architecture and utilized a playfulness in how the boxes and forms work with one another,” he says, mentioning the large roof overhangs that are typical of Wright’s designs. “We had to learn about the family and their requirements. They have young boys and so we made a design with lots of open space for active living. We also noticed our clients were quite tall, so we planned for counters to be slightly higher to make the kitchen a more comfortable work environment. Ceiling heights are also higher. There is a lot of vertical volume in this home.” The features of this property are numerous. For example, there is a wealth of storage options. Indeed, more than $100,000 in custom cabinetry and storage solutions went into the build. Not only does the lower basement level feature two guest rooms, an office, a mechanical room and a three-piece bath, there is also ample storage for a growing family.
The colour palette is calming and materials such as the Tyndall-stone fireplace offer visual warmth. “This is not a ‘spec’ house. This house is designed and built specifically for this family of five,” says Emeka. “This project is the result of two and half years of back and forth with the client to achieve this beautiful design. Infill projects can be a challenge, but together, Nadi Design and builder R&B Homes were able to create a residence that is upscale and very liveable.“
On the second floor, the master bedroom features a massive walk-in closet that juts out beyond the house to maximize the space consideration. Other key features include a breathtaking spa-like ensuite, a commercial grade kitchen built to maximize both day-today living and entertainment options, insulated concrete form foundation walls and very deep pile pinning to set the house on solid ground. For example, berbers are not as popular as they once were. Today, we are seeing patterns making a comeback in warm neutral colours. Residentially, we are seeing a greater use of carpet tile, something that was once only popular on the high-end commercial side of things,” she remarks. “Materials such as polypropylene, nylon, and olefin have all undergone tremendous changes in the manufacturing process and deliver better carpet product today than in the past. Buyers have noticed the quality and the environmental benefits of recycled materials in carpet construction. The result is greater confidence,” Francine explains, pointing to Shaw’s Tuftex line. “With many styles to choose from and the best stain-fighting technology in the industry, Shaw carpets such as Tuftex offer a range of texture, loop, pattern and twist options, as well as delivering colour and value to the equation.” Another key trend that is coming forward currently is the large format ceramic tile. “At one time, floor tiles were a standard 12-inch by 12-inch format. Not any longer. Now, we are seeing a huge demand for 24-inch by 24-inch tiles. These offer minimum grout lines and create a strong clean appearance in designs,” she says. According to Francine, orders for marble-look large formats have been growing. “These offer the great appearance of marble without the porous characteristics. They are very realistic.” She suggests that the larger tiles can be tricky to install and often require a skilled hand to get jobs just right. “The substrate has be very level to accommodate the larger surface area of the tiles. Moving Glass Walls for Seamless Indoor Outdoor Spaces Folding, Sliding & Swinging Door Solutions BY AL DUECK & AYNSLEY DUECK Add a touch of luxury to your space with a movable glass wall that connects the interior to the exterior of your home. Although this concept was born and bred for milder climates, technology and market demand have now made the vision possible in our northern climate. Imagine how the functionality of a room changes when you can open it up to the outdoors with a wide clear opening. Applications range from renovations with some new framing, to custom new homes with full design flexibility. What type of door would suit your project? Following are several options: FOLDING DOORS Folding doors are stackable panels that collapse over to one side of the opening. Often they involve one active door that is used for regular entry / exit, without having to open the entire wall. They are easily sized for any opening and have a remarkable capability to create very large clear openings (9 feet, 12 feet, and larger!). Folding doors typically require an engineering analysis to install a beam to specifications to carry the weight of the panels. Although well designed for the colder climates, there are still some realities that the doors will not seal as well as some other alternatives, and that finding an oversized insect screen also needs to be considered. SLIDING DOORS Sliding doors are simply that – glass panels that slide out of the way. These doors can be very effectively designed for cold climates, with true triple-pane argon low-E glass. Heavy-duty wheels and fiberglass frames allow for larger panels of glass and unobstructed views. We often see Bi-Parting Sliding Doors, typically meaning four panels, with the middle two sliding
away from each other to create the opening. Take advantage of the beautiful height, up to 9 feet tall, with today’s high ceilings. These newer sliding door designs also offer a more contemporary range of handles. SWINGING DOORS Often placed in more traditional designs, or modern designs with grid patterns, swinging doors offer great style and good performance. Typically in a Double Door format, the doors open with no post in between, and you can achieve a 6 to 7-foot clear opening. Alternatively, homeowners can select multiple panels, 3 up to 6, to show off a wider view to the outdoors.
