Style of the city spoke with Managing Director Clive Thomas about the exciting move:
What made you decide to move your office space?
As a growing law firm, we needed more space we could use collaboratively. We wanted a space in the city centre, that suited our hybrid working model and reflected our growth as a business. We wanted an office that our staff would enjoy and be proud of and that would also attract new talent to the firm.
What can new and existing clients expect from the new offices?
We had a blank sheet of paper to work with and we are delighted with the bespoke fit-out of our new offices at Castle Bridge. They have been designed by Claire Willicombe at Lilleum to make the most of the space and the light - and the view of Sophia Gardens. For our colour scheme we have combined our corporate blue with green, to reflect the park we overlook and as a symbol of freshness and creativity. We have also included a large space to entertain which leads into the glazed walls of our board room.
Are you able to provide any additional services at the new space?
We will now have the room to base lawyers in Cardiff across the many disciplines that we offer. This includes Catrin Reed our new head of Wills & Probate and Leah
Rhydderch, Senior Associate in private divorce matters - both are fluent Welsh speakers and looking forward to networking in the local community.
What do you think truly differentiates Watkins and Gunn from other law firms across Cardiff and the surrounding areas?
As a firm we have fantastic, approachable lawyers, who are leaders in their field and are not afraid of challenging cases. We are also a values driven business. Our values are deeply rooted in the fabric of the firm, which is why we have been recognised as a Great Place to Work and one of the Best Workplaces for our size in the UK.
We are really pleased with the sign we have in the new office showing all of our CSR sub brands which help to make the firm such a vibrant place.
New Head of Private Clients, Catrin Reed shares all on her new position at Watkins & Gunn Solicitors, and new location on Cardiff’s Cowbridge Road East.
I am thrilled to have started with Watkins and Gunn Solicitors at the start of the year as the new Head of Private Client, I’m absolutely delighted to have joined such an impressive firm at a thriving time. Clive Thomas has really taken modern working to a new level with the design and layout of the new office in Cardiff where I am based, a stone's throw away from the Welsh hub of Cardiff which is useful for a Welsh Speaker like me. The office is well worth the visit so please come and see us! My role is to build presence to the legal offering of the new office and to continue with the success of the Private Client department. I’m fortunate to join a very well-established team to include Amy Thomas and Danielle Jameson based in the Pontypool Office and we are committed to providing professional and specialist advice to our Clients across South Wales.
Catrin Reed
Head of Private Clients
The work that we do is extremely important and whilst it may not be seen as the most exciting area of law, it is certainly the most rewarding. Private Client includes drafting Wills and Lasting Powers of Attorney which are instrumental for everybody. We advise on protecting assets and loved ones to reflect your circumstances now and planning for later life. This could include making gifts, setting up Trusts and giving advice on Inheritance Tax which could protect your assets and reduce Inheritance Tax liability. We deal with Probate and estates and have the genuine empathy to deal with Clients at a difficult time. Please feel free to contact myself or the team for any questions you may have.

DAY’S Recruitment are on a mission to provide an unrivalled level of service to both companies and candidates alike
Meet Catherine Day – Founder and Director of DAY’S Recruitment, Catering and Hospitality Recruitment specialists.
For any new business, excellent communication is extremely important, but when a new business sets up during a pandemic, at a time when the industry they specialise in is all but utterly decimated, the need for excellent communication is everything!
I was told in no uncertain terms, I was mad… www.daysrecruitment.co.uk
‘Why are you setting up now, why don’t you wait until Covid is over’.
‘Is this a good idea? You will have no clients – Hospitality is shut’.
‘Cath, I know you are optimistic, but this is crazy’. Okay, in hindsight I probably was very naïve, but was this a hindrance, or help? Absolutely was a help!
It was early March 2020, my little boy was less than a month old, and my daughter was still only a toddler, but my mind was made up…I was going to set up the business, and absolutely nothing was going to get in my way – after all, I knew I wanted to be at every school concert, trip and parents' evening, so my ‘Why’ made this non-negotiable.
I launched the business in August of 2020 having spent just under 6 months planning and preparing, and I reached out to former colleagues, candidates, and prospective clients during this time. It wasn’t long before there was a small relaxation in rules, and we were asked to support a well renowned sporting venue – who are thankfully still valued clients.
I would be lying if I said it was an easy road, but I received support, guidance, and advice from some truly inspirational businesspeople, and I received administrative support from a former team member - enter Alannah - who was fundamental in our success in the very early days.
Fast forward to the present day and we are now a team of three, working with some of the best in the business, from care homes to live entertainment venues, sporting stadiums to luxury hotels – not just in Wales, but in various locations throughout the UK!
As a team we are really excited to continue supporting candidates into exciting new roles, and clients on securing talented individuals for various types of roles!
Our commitment to providing an unrivalled level of service to both client and candidate is evident in the excellent reviews we have received to date, and in September 2021 this was also recognised by South Wales Business Awards as we were nominees in the ‘start-up of the year’ category.
