BOX BRAID UP DO.

Box Braid Styling tips 1

Make sure that your braids are thick enough and braided loosely. Before experimenting with different styles and up do’s, give your hair a couple of days to settle. 2 Premature box braids styling while your hair is still fairly tight can put major stress on your edges. Box braids that are too thin will be very difficult to take out. Remember, the longer you braids are, the better: waist length box braids offer a lot more styling options. For example, a sexy and sophisticated braided, low bun is an essential part of the box braid style!

D O ’ S of great hair care

by Michael Barrows Use the right hair care products for your specific hair type. If you're hair is damaged, dry or color treated, use hair care products formulated to repair this damage and add much-needed shine and resiliency. On the other hand, if your hair is oily, use a deep-cleansing shampoo and light conditioner to keep your hair looking its best. The right products should be at the base of your hair care routine.

If

ones you choose can have a great impact on your hair care costs. Simply put: choose a system that causes minimal damage and conditions hair as it colors. This will save you money when it comes to conditioning hair care products.

1.

Protect your hair with hair care products that contain sunscreen.

4.

Shampoo your hair only when it is dirty. Contrary to popular belief, you do not need to shampoo your hair daily. Doing so can make your hair dry and hard to work with.

5.

Turn to a professional for all of your hair care needs. Yes, kitchen beauticians and friends do not cost as much as putting your hair care needs in the hands of a qualified professional, but they often result in blunders that end up costing you more money than if you went to the salon in the first place.

6.

Use professional conditioning hair coloring systems. There are many hair coloring systems on the market, and the

the amount of money

2.

Get a trim every 6 to 8 weeks as part of your regular hair care routine. Even if you are growing your hair longer, it is still vital to make a routine trim a major part of your hair care routine. Snipping ends before they split will keep your hair looking healthy and save you hair care headaches in the end.

consumers spend on

hair care products annually is

any indication, most people are concerned about the appearance of their hair and strive to attain beautiful, healthy and stylish locks.

7.

Stick with one chemical service. In order to keep your hair as healthy as it can be, ask your hair care professional to recommend only one chemical service: color or perm. By only using the service that is perfect for your particular style and needs, you will ensure that your hair stays healthier.

8.

Add Texture. By adding texture to your style, through perm or cut, you can greatly reduce the time it takes to style and perform your daily hair care routine. And you will look sensational.

9.

Choose hair color that compliments your style. With all of the professional coloring techniques available, this part of your hair care regimen has never been easier. From chunky highlights to soft color, you can greatly enhance your style with the right technique.

10. Comb your hair with a wide-

toothed come when it is wet to prevent breakage. The only time you should use a brush during your hair care routine is when your hair is barely damp or dry. In the end, hair care is a very individualized and personal thing. Feel free to add your own flair and style to your hair care routine, but remember to include hair care principles that will benefit your hair and avoid those that damage it.

on't build your dreams around reality and passions. Let your dreams build you around passions and actuality. Let your dreams come to you. Let actuality surpass reality and motivate action. Infatuation by the sun. Soak in her wisdom. She will shine on those who needeth it, so keepith it. LOCKS * If you're like most people, you put your hair through some sort of regimen every day. You wash and condition it, then brush and dry it, maybe even put in some product, and tie it up in a clip or band. But what would happen to your hair if you just left it alone? What are we really doing to our hair when we put it through our daily grooming rituals? If left to its own devices, human hair tends to form knots, tan-

gles and eventually large matted sections. Anyone who's tried to run a brush through a child's hair that hasn't been combed for a few days can tell you how tangled it will become in just a short amount of time. And if you let that child's hair keep growing without ever brushing or combing it -- even if you washed it occasionally -- chances are it would start to resemble one of the world's most misunderstood hairstyles: dreadlocks.

Healthy Hair Tips 1

Protect Your Hair from Heated Styling Tools

I

f you’re going to use products that expose your hair to extreme heat

regularly, be sure to apply a thermal protecting hair product first. Products containing ingredients like Royal Jelly or Vitamin B5 will coat the hair to protect it from damage while conditioning and repairing previous damage. - continue on next page

2

Shield Your Hair from the Sun

I

n summertime, we hear lots about protecting our skin from the sun but not

so much about our hair. While the effects of the sun on the hair are not life-threatening, they can lead to dry, brittle and dull-looking hair. Look for shampoos, conditioners and leave-in conditioners that offer UVA and UVB protection to prevent excessive dehydration of the hair.

3

Use the Right Brushes and Combs

B

e sure to use a comb only when your hair is wet. Combing through

dry hair with a comb instead of a brush will break strands of hair because the rigid tool can get stuck on split ends. - continue on next page

4

Let Your Hair Down

I

f you frequently tie up your hair, you my want to consider changing up

your routine. Keeping your hair tightly pulled back can be damaging because the hair is being unnaturally pulled and tugged. Also, the act of pulling an elastic on and off can lead to breakage.

5

Avoid Ammonia

A

mmonia is typically found in permanent hair dyes, which are very

commonly used. Ammonia can leave hair dry and ends split. In the last couple of years, ammonia-free permanent and semi-permanent hair dyes have made their way into the market. If you can, use an ammonia-free dye to protect your hair from further damage.

6

Let Your Hair Rebel

I

t’s no secret that straight-haired women yearn for curly hair and vice-versa.

Keeping your hair curled or straightened unnaturally can be damaging to your hair since it requires excessive heat and several products to achieve those looks. To keep your hair looking healthy and shiny, avoid forcing your hair out of its normal style often. Save that for special occasions only. It will be far less damaging in moderation.

adine K is a makeup artist who unexpectedly found her passion for makeup from an eye shadow pallet and Youtube videos. In a recent interview when asked about how she started her journey in the beauty industry, Nadine described it as a “weird acquaintance” since she had no previous interest As a passionate make-up artist, her goal is to portray art through the application of make-up and show the world that makeup enhances not only beauty, but also confidence. She hopes that her work will be remembered for the way her clients feel with the final product and she strives to show them that although they are already beautiful, their beauty can be enhanced in creative ways with the make-up she applies. So where does this passionate make-up artist find her inspiration? In magazines and through other artists such as herself, including make-up artists, hair stylists, and fashion designers. She is especially intrigued by looks that are “not wearable,” those uniquely dramatic looks found in magazines but not on the everyday person walking down the street. Fashion

for make-up. When her sister bought an eye shadow pallet there sparked an interest in Nadine, which led her to watch and study Youtube videos about make-up and learning various techniques for applying make-up. Intrigued by the creativity she witnessed in those videos, her passion for make-up was realized and she began to improve her skills as a make-up artist. Her first project was applying makeup on models for a friend’s photo shoot. designer portfolios also inspire Nadine’s passion for make-up because she imagines make-up looks that will be visually appealing when paired with certain fashion styles. Passionate and imaginative! When asked whether she considers herself to be a trend setter as a make-up artist, she simply answered “yes” as she finds herself having to keep up to date with modern trends for her clients who wish to wear the latest and hottest looks from magazines. She educates herself on the latest and upcoming make-up products and what they can do for her clients. One way she does this is by taking the time to try the products on herself in order to give her clients the best possible feedback on the latest arrivals.

3 MYTH

Natural products are the safest. FACT

MYTH

Cutting your hair regularly will help it grow longer. FACT

That statement is not a myth. Natural products are the safest to use. However, some natural products should not be applied directly on your skin. Fruit acids, tea tree oil and witch hazels should not be applied to your skin.

You may only help to increase the length of your hair by allowing the proper blood flow to your scalp and hair follicles. When you regularly trim your hair, a process takes place which creates a healthy condition that is suitable for hair growth.

MYTH VS FACT 2

4 MYTH

Washing your hair everyday makes it dry and lifeless. FACT

That statement may be true. But, you have to choose and then use a suitable shampoo for your hair. Find a shampoo that will add moisture to your hair instead of making it dull and dry. Treating your hair with a more suitable shampoo will add beauty, depth and life to your hair. When it comes to black hair, moisture is key. Everyday washing, followed by a heat process may make the hair more dry than needed. - WRITTEN BY Michael Hatfield

MYTH

Eating foods that contain oil will lead to acne and pimples . FACT

That statement is not true. Acne and pimples occur when the pores of the skin are not cleaned properly. Skin pores become clogged with dirt and oil which then turn into pimples and acne. Bacterial growth and hormonal changes lead to acne as well. But, regardless of what we eat, consistently consuming a healthy diet is always advisable.

ot all people have the same skin tone and so each skin tone needs their special kind of makeup and beauty tips. That way it maximizes the beautiful features of the skin you have. Hence, when you start applying makeup, first be sure what skin tone you have because what is good for the fair

complexion will not be for you if you have a dark complexion. There are various shades to dark complexions like deep black to olive toned and no matter what shade of dark tone the woman has, she can look stunning with specific beauty tips. Next comes the choosing of perfect lip shades for your dark complexion. A perfectly made pair of lips draws attention to any face and so you should learn to apply lipstick properly. If you are a younger woman, go for matte lipstick, according to lifelovebeauty.com. The same site suggests that creamy and glossy lipstick is better for older women to give them a youthful appearance. As for color, choose dark colors if your complexion is dark. So it is blackberry or burgundy for those with very dark skin tone. Corals, mauves, sheer beiges and plums work better for those with mediumdark skin. For a memorable evening look, choose shades of bright red. If the shades of your lower and upper lips are different, then first apply a dark lipstick as a base layer on the lighter lip and then fill both lips with same shade of a dark color.

Blush If you have dark complexion, do not go for blushes with light tones; rather go for those that are darker to your skin tone. Light blushes will make your skin look ashy. For those with very dark tones, burgundies, pinks and reds are better to add color to their face. Using bronzer is also a great idea for them as it gives a nice glow. For those with olive or medium-dark skin tones, the colors to choose are roses, soft plums, dusty pinks and peaches. For going out in the evening, such women can choose a blush with a hint of gold.
