Doing this required researching the social issues present in Rotteram Zuid. Problems such as poverty, crime and unemployment became very apparent. We believe creating opportunities for the community to engage with eachother and increase their quality of life has to be one of the main goals for development of the Maashaven. One of the solutions that has proven to be most effective in drastically improving a community’s access to work, education and healthcare is accessible public transport. This is why we bury the road underground en build a public transport-only way on top. This takes away a huge barrier between the city blocks and its neighbouring Maashaven, whilst supplying the people with good means of transportation (as car ownership averages at 0,5 per household). We split the southern docks into 6 equally sized plots and created a formula that dictates the urban properties. Architects are free to develop inspiring buildings of all shapes and sizes, as long as they follow the model. A determined ratio between, culture/education, housing, local bussiness and hospitality services is set, and an interconnecting pedestrian route (along the water), cycling path and 1 bus.tram stop per plot is created. By keeping three of the original structures, we pay hommage to the rich history of the site. The buldings create a beautiful symmetry and are perfectly fit for the three educational institution. By connecting the neighbourhood by means of pedestrian bridges, one ensures the interaction between al Rotterdammers living, working and/or studying near Campus Zuid, and further improves accessibility. Through the creation of spaces such as the City Lab and the urban farm, we can ensure the participation of the local community, campus; whilst carefully looking how it can also benefit the surrounding neighbourhoods and their Rotterdammers.
