message Dear Saint Ursula Academy Community, As I tell the students at the Opening School Mass, the beginning of the school year is like Christmas for me! Seeing all of the students walk through our doors is an incredible feeling. Each one of our 673 student is a gift to Saint Ursula, and as we have increased each class size by approximately 15 students each year, we remain committed to educating and nurturing each one with care and love. This summer on our campus I happened upon a group of seniors working on a project. It seemed like just yesterday that they were freshmen concerned with how they would find their next classroom, and now they have blossomed into leaders in our school community. While it is Saint Ursula Academy’s mission to prepare these young women to leave SUA committed to building a better world, I find the experience bittersweet. I love to watch them mature and become Academy Alums: reflective thinkers, leaders, nurturers, and prophets; and yet I sorely miss them as they

Graduates live out The Academy Alum In conjunction with the publication of The Academy Alum in spring 2004, the SUA magazine has featured students, alumnae and topics that focus on the four roles that a graduate is ready to play in the world at graduation: thinker, leader, nurturer and prophet. The school year theme for the 2015-2016 year is REFLECTIVE THINKER. All year, students, teachers and staff will focus on activities and programs aimed at learning to build a better world through curiosity, reflection and creativity. Today, we nurture and encourage all all students, faculty and staff to follow our founding Sisters and become reflective thinkers, confident leaders, nurturers of others and prophets of the values and examples they develop at SUA. This magazine features the varied accomplishments of our students and our alumnae. Thank you!

The reunion festivities began with SUA’s new and improved girls’ night out, The Bulldog Boutique! Alumnae, family and friends came to the cocktail party with live music by Young Heirlooms and SUA’s own Gracie Willett ’16. The featured event: plenty of shopping including clothing, jewelry, and accessories. You don’t need

Graduates from many years participated in Saturday’s Alumnae Mass, held in our historic and beloved chapel. Outside of the events at SUA, many classes hosted Class Parties around town.

Honor Roll of Donors

2014-2015

Saint Ursula Academy has published the 2014-2015 Honor Roll of Donors to acknowledge and thank the thousands of people who supported the mission of the Academy this school year. Donors listed in this Honor Roll made gifts between July 1, 2014 and June 30, 2015. We are truly grateful for this incredible support. Without the generosity of our benefactors, the Academy would not be what it is today.

Every dollar donated makes a difference and is carefully allocated to help our nurturing Catholic educational community founded in the Ursuline tradition. We encourage academic excellence and empower each student to become a woman of faith, integrity and courage committed to building a better world. 13

FINANCIAL REPORT Each year we are truly blessed by the amazing generosity of our caring benefactors. Alumnae, parents, and friends continued their support of St. Ursula Academy last year. We are grateful to all our donors and volunteers for their dedication to excellent education and programs for our young women. THANK YOU!

the principal’s message Dear SUA community, I have a confession. Rather than climb the stairs to enter my daughter’s room to tell her that dinner was ready, I texted her. Why would I commit such an egregious act of parental misbehavior? While some rationalizations may be noble (I couldn’t leave the kitchen...the directions for the creme brulee said, ‘Stir constantly’) or practical (for my own mental health, going upstairs would force me to face the disaster of papers, clothes and shoes sprawled across my daughter’s room....and I couldn’t fight the battle again that week), the reality of the situation is this: It was more efficient to text her and move on to the next task.

individual observations, experiences and processes. At the conclusion of the meeting, the challenge become clear: How do we engage our students to participate in and find value from reflective practice within the world of collaboration and connectivity that they not only are accustomed to living in, but are disposed to thrive in?

As the tools we use to develop, create, communicate and discover become more advanced, the efficiency in which we can complete tasks increases. The instant response students receive from asking Siri, “Take me to 3456 Glenmore Avenue,” replaces the minutes that a Saint Ursula student spent in the 1980s unfolding a map, then the additional minutes determining how to get from her Anderson house to her friend’s house in Cheviot; and finally, the subsequent hours required to fold the map back to its original state! Now, students move quickly from task to task. They do not notice it because they were born in this world of connectivity, information and networking.

Understanding the context of the students’ lives and offering experiences that invite them to a different awareness are cornerstones to effective pedagogy. Students began our year of the reflective thinker engaging in activities that highlighted one or more of Howard Gardner’s seven intelligences. Essentials of each activity: creativity, teamwork and time for each student to reflect on her gifts and how she utilizes those gifts.

A decade ago, Saint Ursula Academy was one of the first schools in Cincinnati to develop a one-on-one Tablet PC program. While students are still using their Tablet PC daily in the academic world, they function both in and out of school with another “computer” that is handheld, easy to use, always connected, and fun...Apple ensures that it is fun. As an adult, I both struggle with and am taken with the ease with which my children complete tasks. While I still cringe at the sight of a group of teenagers walking together with their eyes fixated on the most recent Instagram post, I do not hesitate to ask my daughter to look up a phone number or the score of the Red’s game. She often functions as my “Siri.” Adults did not develop within the world of instant access, social networking and chats. Boomers, Xers and Millennials struggle to participate in this world and have misgivings about the negative consequences we foresee developing in Generation Z. These generational differences become a rich opportunity as Saint Ursula focuses on one of our Academy Alum roles, the reflective thinker. At the end of last year, a small group of faculty and students met to discuss the upcoming theme, brainstorm ideas and map a curriculum for the upcoming year. As a participant in this meeting, I was curious to hear the girls’ perspective on what it means to be a reflective thinker and how we could foster reflection in our lives. I entered the discussion ready to talk about attributes that I considered paramount to reflective practice: individual time to ponder, rational thought, consideration of feelings. In essence, creating a time and space for me to be within my own head, heart and soul. The Gen Z students brainstormed much different ideals: creativity, ingenuity, discovering new ways to solve existing problems, collaboration, connection. The ensuing discussion entertained both sets of values, with the adults expanding their vision of reflective thinking to be more dynamic, engaging and active; while the students pondered opportunities for

How would you work collaborate with a team to develop the 27th letter to the alphabet, construct a tower made with spaghetti noodles that would support a marshmallow, or organize an orchestra composed of unique “junk” instruments? Ask a Saint Ursula student! After each activity, faculty members facilitated discussions: With respect to your natural preferences, was this activity easy for you to do? How did you function as a member of your team? If given a chance to repeat this activity, would you do anything differently? This discussion and reflection was a critical part of each activity. At the end of the day, all 670 students and 90 faculty and staff gathered to pray the Ignatian Examen. By acknowledging God’s presence, expressing gratitude for the day, examining our day with particular attention to our emotions, concentrating on one aspect of our daily experience and considering our actions in the future, we prepared ourselves for this year. As our year of the reflective thinker continues to develop, our students will inspire our adult community to reach out to others, collaborate and experiment. In return, our adult community will challenge students to take advantage of opportunities to pause and consider, not just what they have done, but what they can do in the future. It is these opportunities, the ones that are present, but may go unnoticed each day, that will provide our students the sustainable breaths that keep their mind, body and spirits moving. The future is not to more efficiently complete more things more quickly; rather, the future is completing things in a way that sustains our happiness, growth and health. Sincerely,

When Saint Ursula alumnae come back to visit SUA, they often ask, “What’s it like to be a student at SUA today?” While the school and programming continues to grow and evolve, the welcoming, supportive, faith-filled atmosphere

with 10Ks and half marathons and now is doing 3-4 marathons a year.

When did you first start to run? My brother got me started—he did track in grade school and I wanted to be like him. I got on Visitation’s track team in Kindergarten—I was terrible at it because there wasn’t any distance to it. When I got to the older grades, that’s when I got more into it because I was better at the longer distances. I won city championships in mile races in 7th and 8th grades. I learned over the years to love running, especially because the coaches encouraged us at SUA and pushed me. Do you like to run? I do love it! If I didn’t, I don’t think I would continue doing it. How do you prepare for competition? You have to tell yourself you’ve done it 100 times, trained and put in the work, so whether you have a good day or a bad day you know you gave it your all.

It’s inspiring that he picked it up and keeps getting better and better. I love watching him race.. He runs the pig—I run him in from mile 20. He impresses me by how strong he is. With all the opportunities I’ve been given, my parents have always been there and never said no to an opportunity, especially the national races. They have always supported me and gotten me where I needed to be. I can’t thank them enough. My grandma supports me too. She cuts clippings and tells me she’s praying for me. In 2011, she graduated with a certificate in Catering and Personal Chef from Kendall. Not long after, she moved back home to Northern Kentucky, married her husband Doug, and established a catering business she called The Delish Dish (delishdishcincy.com/). She set up shop in the Northern Kentucky Incubator Kitchen, where she has grown from a one woman operation to managing a staff of 15 employees! The Delish Dish is booming, providing delicious cuisine for events large and small.
