SUANNY DUGARTE
ABOUT ME
In 2007 my family and I went to Walt Disney World in Orlando for a holiday. While in the queue for an attraction, I remember taking into consideration my surroundings. I subconsciously had become immersed in the world of the Disney movie as we waded through the queue; every surface, every turn, every wall, was designed to submerge us into the animated film. This was the catalyst that allowed me to see the power that staging has on an individual to transport them into a different atmosphere. Throughout my studies, I had sustained an interest in theatre, despite a career in interior design. I would find myself involved in helping stage productions, from high school graduation to student black box to festivals.

5. HARRY AINLAY HIGH SCHOOL COMMENCEMENT CEREMONY GOAL: Design the stage for the graduating class of Harry Ainlay High School 2013 PROGRAMS: Revit, Sketchup COMPLETION: 2013 SQUARE FT/M : 100’ wide x 43’ deep
CONCEPT The theme for the 2012-2013 class of Harry Ainlay High School was “Once Upon A Time.” The design of the commencement stage was inspired by fairy tales. For graduation night, the boys and girls of the senior class would become princes and princesses while walking across the stage.

THE CLOCK The focal point for the stage was the clock. It represented the passing of time (the progression of our high school days as well as beyond them) and was designed by a former Harry Ainaly alumnus. The design of the clock emulated the school’s crest but a rustic finish was added to tie it into the theme of “Once Upon A Time.”

Garden Elements and Colour Scheme THE FOREST ELEMENTS The elements used to create an enchanted forest were garden arches, synthetic potted plants, a detachable well, and post lamps. The bulk of the props--the trees and the well--were borrowed from the school. The arches and the lamps were bought new, but were placed into storage for future graduating classes to use.

Lighting Inspiration and Harry Ainlay High School Colours THE STAGE ARRANGEMENTS Using warm colours like oranges and pink for the lighting, the colour scheme mimicked the sky at dusk. This was an intentional choice as it would go with the theme of “Once Upon A Time”, even if it did not reflect the Harry Ainlay school colours of white, black and blue.

THE LAYOUT PLANNING The original concept for the stage design had both sides be symmetrical. The student procession passed through the arches once called, receiving the diploma from the well, and continuing on the path towards the photo-op area. The final layout varied slightly, as both sides were asymmetrical due to the placement of the high rise platforms for the performances during the ceremony.

6. VICTORIA COLLEGE DRAMA SOCIETY’S “THE DROWSY CHAPERONE” GOAL: Design the stage for Victoria College Drama Society’s student production of “The Drowsy Chaperone” PROGRAMS: Sketchup COMPLETION: 2017 SQUARE FT/M : 56’-8” wide x 27’-5” deep
CONCEPT Set simultaneously in the 1990s and the 1920s, the musical recounts the foibles of the past (1920s) through the narration in the present (1990s). The setup of the stage was to have stage right be the apartment in the 1990s and the rest of the stage be the 1920s.

Set Inspiration and Colour Scheme THE APARTMENT KITCHEN The apartment of the Man in Chair, the protagonist of the musical, was located stage right. The setting was inspired by apartment kitchens of the 1990s with its dark wood cabinets and bulky design. The colour scheme of cool colours was used to contrast the lively warm colours of the rest of the set, which represented the 1920s.

Set Inspiration THE 1920s THEMED BROADWAY STAGE As the Man in Chair plays his favourite Broadway record, “The Drowsy Chaperone, the characters emerge from centre stage and stage left. The colour scheme for the 1920s included warm colours to represent the vibrant, glamorous, happy tone of the musical, contrasting the warm nostalgia with the coolness of the present.

Colour Scheme THE BEDROOM Stage left was a continuation of the 1920s set that doubled as a bedroom for a scene. The remainder of the musical actors used the door to enter and exit their scenes throughout the play. Along with the stage centre doors, this was the main entrance and exit point.

THE LAYOUT PLANNING The original layout of the stage was to have the partition colours have a patchy stucco design. However, due to time restrictions, the effect was only used for the apartment. The final layout varied slightly in the placement and size of the windows, as well as the cutout of the dresser. The simple design allowed for the actors to enter and exit the scenes with ease as well as fill the negative space with the props needed for different scenes.
