Welcome to UAL/SUARTS Freshers’ Festival 2013 Congratulations on getting a place at the biggest Arts Institution in Europe! Freshers’ Festival is a month long calendar of exciting and creative events and opportunities running throughout September where you can meet other students, get involved with some activities and settle in to life in London, whenever you arrive. Hopefully this booklet will give you a quick intro to what is happening and when, and get you excited about Freshers’ Festival! There will be events happening at each of the colleges - most of these you will be able to attend even if you are not studying at that college. The best thing to do is to check our Freshers’ page at www.suarts.org/freshers where you will be able to find out what is going on - you may also have course specific events you’ll be invited to by your department which won’t be listed on our online calendar. When you enrol at UAL you will automatically become a member of UAL’s Students’ Union (SUARTS for short). This booklet should give you an idea of what we can do with you and for you, but visit our website and social media pages to find out more! Shelly, SUARTS President 2013/14

Moving to London before Freshers’ Week?

What do I do after Freshers’ Week?

Make sure to come to our college specific networking events and Sports Afternoon in Hyde Park on Wednesday 11th to meet fellow UAL students. Living London Day on 12th Sept is your chance to learn all about living in the capital, with some really useful practical advice workshops. Both of these events are open to everyone.

Don’t worry – the fun isn’t over! All of our sports and societies have free taster sessions for you to go along to; we will hold some free private views and parties and there are more practical workshops about getting started here in London.

For more info on all of the above visit www.suarts.org/freshers.

Check out www.suarts.org/ freshers for timings and details and try out as much as you can!

Top 5 things to do in London in your first weeks

Free Museums Whether you love art, design, photography or anything else, there is a museum for you in London and most of them are free! Be sure to look for the smaller museums like the Photographer’s Gallery, the Horniman Museum, the ICA and the Wallace Collection. Independent Cafés You won’t struggle to find places to eat anywhere in London, but it’s worth looking past the bigger chains and trying some of the smaller independent cafés and restaurants. Try cosycoffeeshops. co.uk for some ideas. Markets After some tasty food? Give Brixton or Borough markets a go for some fresh food delights. Portabello Road or Spitalfields markets are great for clothes and other unique bits and Columbia

Road hosts an amazing flower market on a Sunday. Views The geography of London is best appreciated from high up - views from Parliament Hill and Greenwich Observatory give you a good idea for free, but if you have some spare cash head up the London Eye or the Shard for a real bird’s eye view of the capital. Parks It might not feel like it wondering along Oxford Street but London has loads of green spaces - more than most cities in the world! Central London has expansive Hyde Park, beautiful Regents’ Park and elegant St James’s Park. Venturing further out you will find Hampstead Heath, Richmond Park and the Royal Botanical Gardens at Kew.
