Good ideas from every seat.
WHAT’S INSIDE: Ingenious flexibility in the large cargo area provide convenient ways to store, hold and secure items making the Outback ready for every outing. WHAT IT DOES: Whatever you are bringing, and however much you need, Outback offers the capability and space to make it all fit. Outback is ready for your life, right now. The clever multipurpose design of its roomy cabin offers more than enough space for family, friends and free thinking. And its compact double wishbone rear suspension allows for an expansive cargo area, so Outback handles bulky loads and curvy roads with equal skill.
SPACE TO BE SPONTANEOUS Inside the Outback, space is intelligently distributed so that you can change the seating and storage configuration in an instant. 60/40 folding rear seats allow you to haul large items and various passengers as you need, so you can adjust to a different arrangement as the situation requires.
MAKING ROOM, MADE EASY When you need to create some space, levers in the 2nd-row seating area make folding down the rear seats simple and easy.
VERSATILITY WITH SECURITY Outback’s retractable cargo cover helps to keep luggage out of view and away from sunlight. With lightweight yet sturdy aluminum construction, the cover is easily removed to make way for larger cargo when the rear seats are folded down.
STORAGE WITH FLEXIBILITY Thoughtful engineering is evident throughout Outback’s spacious cabin. A roomy console includes a 12-volt power port and padded armrest lid. There is also a pocket in the front passenger seatback, four cup holders, and generous front door pockets, each with its own bottle holder.

It corners the market on confidence. And cornering. Symmetrical all-wheel drive Symmetry gives you balance. Balance gives you control. Matched with the SUBARU BOXERÂŽ engine for an almost perfectly symmetrical layout, the Subaru Symmetrical Full-Time AWD system maximizes the power delivery with exceptional traction and generates balance and stability for total control in almost any condition, giving you the confidence to delight in every kilometre.
Constant contact The more your tires are engaged with the road, the more control you have. Power is routed to all four tires while the vehicle is in motion in order to maintain optimal connection to the road, maximizing handling and control.
Agility in an emergency In bad weather, or in the precious seconds it takes to react to a sudden situation, the symmetrical drivetrain with impressive side-to-side balance provides the stability, agility and traction that help you step around danger.
Dynamic performance Exceptional traction makes acceleration immediate and exhilarating. And the symmetry helps the Outback deliver responsive handling because it’s more stable during cornering, for a unique feeling of control at all times.

SUBARU BOXER® ENGINE Keep your profile low, and your expectations high. SUBARU BOXER® ENGINE WHAT’S INSIDE: The new 2.5 L SUBARU BOXER® engine combines trademark horizontally opposed design with all-new technological refinement. WHAT IT DOES: Its naturally balanced smoothness and low-profile handling advantages are matched by even greater economy and response.
redesigned engine The SUBARU BOXER® engine has always offered exceptional balance and smooth response, but we’ve figured out a way to make driving a Subaru even more inspiring. Subaru engineers painstakingly reviewed the effectiveness of every valve, port and piston to create an engine that is lighter and uses fuel more efficiently. Not only does this new engine achieve new heights of efficiency, but it offers better low-end torque response—meaning you’ll feel immediate, satisfying response every time the accelerator is pressed.
2.5 -LITRE DOHC SUBARU BOXER ®
MAX OUTPUT: 173 hp @ 5,600 rpm MAX TORQUE: 174 lb-ft @ 4,100 rpm FUEL ECONOMY: (Lineartronic®) 6.5 L/100 km hwy (6MT) 7.0 L/100 km hwy Paired with the Lineartronic® CVT, this SUBARU BOXER® engine is efficient and clean. Not only is this engine a new step forward for Subaru environmental responsibility, it’s also an equally impressive performer. With the natural balance and smoothness inherent in its SUBARU BOXER® configuration, and DOHC and AVCS to enhance its performance, it delivers eager response at lower rpm. By combining response and exceptional efficiency, it’s an engine that will give you more fun with less fuel.
3.6 -LITRE DOHC SUBARU BOXER ®
MAX OUTPUT: 256 hp @ 6,000 rpm MAX TORQUE: 247 lb-ft @ 4,400 rpm FUEL ECONOMY: 8.2 L/100 km hwy INCREASED STABILITY Because the engine block has a flatter profile and sits lower in the chassis, the overall vehicle is more stably balanced and resistant to side-to-side motion than other designs.
SMOOTH POWER At any rpm the engine delivers immediate, responsive power that comes on smooth. The pistons lay flat and work against each other to reduce vibrations, making the ride as comfortable as it is exciting.
LONG-LASTING PERFORMANCE The engine’s flat design is inherently rigid and self-balancing, generating less vibration than “V-type” or “in-line” engines for more durability and more reliable performance.
10
Refined vigor is the signature of this smooth powerplant. Double overhead camshafts (DOHC) and the dual Active Valve Control System (AVCS) enhance performance and reduce CO2 emissions, while it s horizontally opposed layout naturally cancels out vibration. From its free-breathing intake to its free-flowing exhaust, the 3.6-litre DOHC SUBARU BOXER® makes driving seem all the more effortless and exhilarating with low-end torque response.
TRANSMISSION Confidence in every gear. What’s inside: Outback offers a choice in transmissions—including the highly efficient Lineartronic® CVT—each one mated to its own variation of Symmetrical AWD. What it does: No matter how you choose to control the engine’s performance, you’ll always enjoy the solid balance and control of Symmetrical AWD.
6-Speed Manual Transmission + Viscous Centre Differential Awd Lineartronic® CVT + Active Torque Split Awd The Outback achieves new levels of response and efficiency with the Lineartronic® CVT. By keeping the engine running in its optimal rev range and preserving the momentum that’s often lost during a gear shift, this unique transmission dramatically improves fuel efficiency. And thanks to a compact and lightweight configuration designed specially to work with the SUBARU BOXER® engine, it ensures quick response and engaging performance. It’s longitudinally paired with an active torque split AWD system that responds to traction conditions, the transmission and driver inputs by continuously controlling the torque distribution front to rear.
Paddle Shifters To keep you always in control of your Outback, the Lineartronic® CVT includes a sporty manual mode with paddle shifters mounted on the steering wheel. They allow you to quickly access higher revs and greater engine power.
For maximum control and spor ty satisfac tion, a slick-shif ting 6-speed manual transmission for 2.5i puts extra gearing at your disposal. Not only does this transmission help improve efficiency at higher speeds, but its short-throw design has been enhanced for quick, smooth and intuitive operation. And pairing it with a viscous limited-slip centre differential (LSD) helps you maintain an inspiring hold on the road, even in low-traction conditions.
5-Speed Automatic Transmission + Variable Torque Distribution Awd Outback 3.6R models are equipped with a refined 5EAT automatic transmission paired with Variable Torque Distribution (V TD) AWD. VTD distributes the engine’s torque to all four wheels while focusing on the rear wheels to suit the conditions, for enhanced handling, superior trac tion and s tabilit y. The elec tronically controlled 5-speed transmission features driver-adaptive shifting, blipping control for quicker, smoother downshifts, and manualstyle control via paddle shifters. 11
12
Centred around stability. Control around every corner. WHAT’S INSIDE: A wealth of components harmoniously interacting with each other, while instantly changing the way they respond based on your input. And all with one goal in mind: perfect handling. WHAT IT DOES: With each part, big and small, working in concert with the rest, the Outback achieves a unique balance between taut response and a smooth ride. Giving you responsiveness with security, no matter the conditions.
GREATER STABILITY AND COMFORT
FRONT SUSPENSION
Outback elevates the inherent advantages of its signature Subaru layout—balance, composure and response—with Subaru DC 3. The body uses more high-tensile steel in critical areas to achieve high strength with flexibility. Handling is made even more surefooted and stable, while the ride is made more comfortable.
Working in harmony with Subaru DC 3 , Outback’s strut-type front suspension features the highly rigid Cradle Mount System, a wide tread and long wheel travel. Together they deliver flatter cornering as well as a quieter, more comfortable ride over a variety of road surfaces.
REAR SUSPENSION SMOOTHER, QUIETER RIDE A highly rigid Cradle Mount front-end structure delivers an accurate, natural steering feel while allowing the engine and suspension to be effectively isolated from the cabin for a smoother, quieter ride. The result is everything that makes driving a pleasure: confidence with comfort, sportiness with safety, and elegance with efficiency—all in perfect balance.
Expertly balancing sporty handling with refinement, Outback’s double wishbone rear suspension is the perfect complement to Subaru DC 3, handling rough roads and sharp corners with poise and precision. To maximize stabilit y and provide increased responsiveness, the suspension features pillow ball bushings in the lower control arms.
SUBARU DYNAMIC CHASSIS CONTROL CONCEPT I nn ov a t i ve Sub a r u e n g in e e r in g b alan c e s han dlin g precision, occupant protection and driving passion. The Subaru Dynamic Chassis Control Concept (DC 3) extends the benefits of its lower centre of gravity and AWD stability to virtually every measure of Outback’s performance.
13
In control. Out of danger. WHAT’S INSIDE: Outback’s superb handling, all-wheel drive stability and advanced active safety systems for control in those moments that can’t be predicted. WHAT IT DOES: Swift and predictable reaction helps you steer out of harm’s way. Because surviving an accident is best done by avoiding it altogether.
ACTIVE SAFETY, TO HELP YOU AVOID A COLLISION At Subaru, our goal is to inspire confidence through peace of mind on the road. This means bringing safe mobility to everyone’s lives, for a stress-free driving experience so that you can focus on your rewarding adventure in the Outback. Many of the same features which make Outback so satisfying to drive also contribute to its serious dedication to keeping its occupants out of harm’s way. The stable, responsive handling of its Symmetrical Full-Time AWD assures control in virtually any weather conditions. And the SUBARU BOXER® engine enhances this security, thanks to its lower centre of gravity, creating an even closer connection to the road. Its standard Vehicle Dynamics Control and generously sized brakes endow it with athletic reflexes, while the added precision of a Cradle Mount System for its suspension and steering equips the driver for excellent evasive abilities. All because Subaru believes the best way to survive a collision is not to have one in the first place.

VEHICLE DYNAMICS CONTROL SYSTEM
BRAKING SYSTEM
Standard in every Outback, Vehicle Dynamics Control monitors and analyses if the vehicle is following the driver’s intended course via an array of sensors. If the vehicle approaches the limits of stability, the automatic transmission’s AWD torque distribution, engine output and brakes at each wheel are adjusted to assist in keeping the vehicle on course.
The standard 4-wheel disc brakes feature lightweight aluminum rear calipers and a strong, reassuring brake feel. The Antilock Braking System (ABS) includes Electronic Brake-force Distribution, to reapportion front/rear braking pressure when the vehicle is loaded. Brake Assist provides greater force in sudden braking even if the driver doesn’t brake hard enough. And Subaru’s Hill Holder helps prevent rollback when starting off on a 5% or steeper grade, by applying the electronic parking brake and automatically releasing it once you’re under way.
Comprehensive protection is at its heart. What’s inside: Advanced safety features, restraint systems and the surrounding body structure all work together to provide maximum protection. What it does: When the unthinkable happens, Outback’s engineering provides an inside-out approach to protecting its occupants with celebrated Subaru safety.
Passive Safety, To Better Survive A Collision
Pedestrian Protection
At Subaru, there is never an end to the pursuit of safety. We set high standards, constantly enhancing features while earning acclaim along the way. But even with the most advanced active safety systems, sometimes an accident is simply inevitable. That is why Outback is designed to protect its occupants with a series of advanced systems and features, balancing rigid strength with controlled deformation in key areas to better manage impact forces. The Cradle Mount System for its engine effectively lengthens the front crumple zone. Each side door includes two side-impact protection beams. A comprehensive suite of airbags1, whiplashreducing front seats, retracting pedals and 3-point seatbelts help protect occupants directly. It’s a core value of the Subaru philosophy that peace of mind is the first step in providing driving enjoyment.
Outback was designed with the objective of providing a high level of pedestrian protection. Shock-absorbing space between the head and engine helps to reduce pedes trian injur y in an accident, as do an energy-absorbing front bumper and a specially designed area around the windshield wipers.
Ring-Shaped Reinforcement Frames T h e R i n g -S h a p e d Re i n f o r c e m e n t Fr a m e s s t r e n g t h e n t h e passenger cabin from the roof to the doors, pillars and floor. This design helps to divert and dissipate impact energy away from the occupants in a collision. The front crumple zone is integral to the frame, while the cradle mounting for the engine is designed to help keep these components far ther from the passenger compartment in a front impact.
Seats, Seatbelts And Srs1 Airbags Standard on the Outback are front SRS1 airbags, plus front-side and cur tain SRS1 airbags. Height-adjustable front seatbelts feature pretensioners to hold passengers firmly in place, and load limiters that ease peak forces to the chest. In a rear collision, front seats utilize rigid frames, firm headrests and such details as energy-absorbing mounting of the inner seat springs, all to help reduce the chance of whiplash.
Break Away Engine Every Subaru goes above and beyond common practice when it comes to your safety. In the event of a head-on collision, your Outback’s SUBARU BOXER® engine and gearbox are driven under the front seat occupants and away from the cabin for your protection.
1 The Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) affords the driver and passenger additional protection in some collisions. This system provides supplemental protection only, and seatbelts must be worn in order to avoid injuries to out-of-position occupants upon airbag deployment. The combination of SRS and seatbelts provides the best protection in a serious accident.
15
Our Vision. Your Safety. At Subaru, we’re dedicated to bringing new technology to help protect our vehicles’ occupants. Combining safety and convenience, the Outback is available with our innovative new driver-assist system — EyeSight™1. Like a second pair of eyes monitoring the road ahead, it can detect obstacles in front of the car, send a warning to alert you, and adjust your speed to limit potential damage and possibly avoid it altogether.
1 EyeSight is a driver-assist system which may not operate optimally under all driving conditions. The driver is always responsible for safe and attentive driving. System effectiveness depends on many factors such as vehicle maintenance, and weather and road conditions. See Owner’s Manual for complete details on system operation and limitations.

™
Pre-Collision Braking
Lane Departure and Sway Warning
With the help of Pre-Collision Braking, should a driver ahead of you unexpectedly hit their brakes or cut you off, EyeSight™ will warn you, apply the brakes to help you slow your Outback, and at lower speeds can even help you stop.
In the event that you accidentally drift your Outback to the edge of your lane and begin to cross into another, EyeSight’s™ Lane Departure and Sway Warning features watch for clearly marked lane markers and deliver a chime to warn you.
Pre-Collision Throttle Management With the Pre-Collision Throttle Management feature, EyeSight™ will help minimize or assist you in avoiding impact with large objects in front of your Outback by preventing acceleration, even when the accelerator is fully applied. It can also help to reduce impacts in situations when “Drive” is accidentally selected instead of “Reverse” by cutting power if it sees an object in your path.
Adaptive Cruise Control Traffic doesn’t always flow, but with EyeSight’s™ Adaptive Cruise Control feature, you not only can keep your Outback at a set speed, but you can also look ahead and help keep your speed automatically adjusted so that your Outback maintains a safe distance from the car ahead of you. It even has the ability to bring your Outback to a complete stop and then resume moving when traffic has begun moving again. 17

Vehicle Dynamics Control (VDC)
VDC electronic stability control utilizes sensors which constantly monitor wheel speeds, steering angle, brake pressure, vehicle yaw rate and lateral g-forces. If VDC detects a difference between the driver’s intended path and the one the vehicle is actually taking, VDC applies braking power and/or reduces engine torque to help correct vehicle path.
Traction Control System (TCS)
VDC also incorporates an all-wheel, all-speed traction control system which senses a loss of traction and applies braking force to the slipping wheel or wheels as necessary to maintain vehicle motion.

Subaru Protection Plan As a Subaru owner, you have expectations for a pleasurable, trouble-free ownership experience — now and into the future. Once your 36-month/60,000-km New Vehicle Limited Warranty period ends,* our Subaru Protection Plan (SPP) — the only vehicle service contract endorsed by Subaru Canada for Subaru vehicles — can prolong your hassle-free ownership experience with three levels of extended service contract coverage tailored to your needs: Powertrain Protection; Major Protection; or Complete Protection (best level of coverage to complement the 60-month/100,000-km Major Component Limited Warranty). SPP offers comprehensive mechanical and electrical coverage and a number of additional features and benefits, such as Roadside Assistance and Alternate Transportation, for up to 7 years or 160,000 kilometres from your vehicle’s in-service date. Whether your vehicle is purchased or leased, SPP protects you and your investment. Be sure to ask your dealer for details or visit subaru.ca. *If you already own a Subaru vehicle and it is still within the 36-month/60,000-km New Vehicle Limited Warranty period, you are still eligible for SPP.

Subaru vehicles are uniquely designed to get out there more—and to leave it out there less. We build our vehicles for maximum longevity because more time spent on the road equals less time spent in junkyards and landfills. Fully 95.4% of our vehicles sold in Canada over the last 10 years are still on the road today.1 You’ll also find very little waste created in the production of a Subaru—many of our vehicles are built in the Subaru of Indiana Automotive, Inc., (SIA) factory, which was the first manufacturing facility in the U.S. to achieve zero-landfill status. Other Subaru facilities around the world now achieve similar goals in helping to preserve the environment. Respect for our surroundings is yet another way that Subaru vehicles help to build driver confidence for the road ahead. 1 Based on R. L. Polk Canada, Inc. Canadian Vehicle In Operation data as of July 2, 2011, for model years 2002–2011. Actual longevity of any car will vary based upon operating conditions.
www.subaru.ca The Supplemental Restraint System (SRS airbags) affords the driver and passenger additional protection in some collisions. This system provides supplemental protection only, and seatbelts must be worn in order to avoid injuries to out-of-position occupants upon airbag deployment. The combination of SRS and seatbelts provides the best protection in a serious accident.
