It’s been a busy year for us at Subaru HQ. Not only did we bring Europe’s safest small family car, the all-new XV, into the UK market, we also introduced our new brand mantra, ‘Better Where it Matters’. We hope you’d agree that this ethos not only underpins everything we do, but more importantly everything your Subaru does too. We wanted to create a magazine that showcases the very best of Subaru. This first edition celebrates 60 years of Subaru, takes a look at our class-leading safety credentials (and the technology behind the awards) and provides inspiration for a Great British staycation. We’ve also dedicated a few pages to those that make the brand what it is today; our fantastic dealer network and you, our loyal customers.

SIX DECADES OF UNBEATABLE DRIVING PERFORMANCE
Celebrating 60 years of Subaru What an amazing journey we’ve been on. From ground-breaking innovation and engineering to World Rally Championship domination, Subaru has evolved into one of the world’s most iconic car brands. As we celebrate 60 years of Subaru, we look back at our history and reflect on our achievements over the past six decades.
’50s ’60s A brief history of time, Subaru-style
Like many other car manufacturers, our origins are firmly rooted in aeroplane engineering, beginning in post-war Japan with the Nakajima Aircraft Company. Its soaring success was a product of innovative technologies, superior build quality and unyielding standards that would be transferred into car production. It was in the early 1950s when a collection of Japanese companies joined forces to form Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd. Its automotive division came to be known as “Subaru”, a Japanese word meaning ‘unite’. It’s also the name for a cluster of six stars in the Taurus constellation, known for their blue light and close proximity to each other. Our debut car was the Subaru 1500 which launched in 1954. From this, the Subaru brand identity was born, an eye-catching and recognisable emblem shining across the four corners of the globe.
History in the making The Subaru 1500 was followed in 1958 by the Subaru 360, Japan’s first mini car. The 360 featured an air-cooled, 2-stroke inline 2-cylinder 356cc engine and was light and entertaining to drive. It was dubbed the Ladybird because of its ladybug shape and proved immensely popular, remaining in production for another 12 years. However, our technical designers had higher aspirations. So, while Bobby Moore was lifting the World Cup, our designers were lifting their game. 1966 saw the introduction of the famous Subaru Boxer engine in the fabled Subaru 1000. The introduction of the Subaru Boxer engine struck a winning chord, and is currently used in every model in the range. A flat-four engine that combined perfect balance and a low centre of gravity for unprecedented handling ability, silky agility and efficient power delivery. It’s a feature that continues to define the Subaru brand, one that we continue to refine further with each new model. Subaru 360

’70s ’80s ’90s ’80s Defining moments
Daring to be different
World domination
Soon after we saw a giant leap for auto kind. We perfected the permanent Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive system in the Subaru Leone station wagon. It changed all-terrain expectations forever: combined with the Boxer engine, our vehicles delivered tenacious grip - and unrivalled handling, control and capability across all terrains and in any conditions.
This momentum continued with bold, daring and cutting-edge designs strikingly seen on the XT Coupe and Legacy. It was 1989 when the 2.0 Subaru Legacy was first unveiled, a worldmarket model that combined a Boxer Engine and a Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive system. The line-up comprised a 4-door Saloon and a Sports Tourer, the latter starting a tourer boom in Japan. A lasting legacy indeed.
But it was in the 90s that Subaru really announced its presence on the world stage. In 1992, a curvaceous, compact new Subaru sports model caught the peoples eyes and shook the rally world… the Subaru Impreza.
As we made our way into the 70s and 80s, our range of models started to expand. The useful go-anywhere Brat (Bi-drive Recreational All-Terrain, in case you’re asking), boldly came onto the market and redefined the idea of an affordable off-road light duty pick-up.
At the same time the agriculturallyrooted Justy was launched, a compact car that offered mountain-goat ability with everyday, perfectly-proportioned hatchback practicality. Subaru’s reputation was growing and its name started to be whispered across the car world. We became a truly global brand, adding distributors and dealers in every corner of the globe.
Looking deceptively like a family car, the Subaru Impreza WRX started to trounce sportier-looking rivals on the track, and drivers like Colin McCrae and Richard Burns became household names. The era-defining Impreza achieved almosttotal domination of the World Rally Championship, in which we lifted the Driver’s Championship title three times and captured the hearts and minds of an adoring public. Its supercar-slaying performance and ability gave the car a halo appeal amongst petrol heads, whilst its handling ease and outstanding stability was coveted by car critics and familyfriendly customers alike. Subaru had hit the big-time, make no mistake.

Rugged resilience
Intelligent technology
Next up, the new Outback came forward. Combining the sporty, reliable on-road handling and interior space of the Legacy with estate practicality, it could cope with the mud equally as well as the tarmac. The Outback personified toughness with its front façade and bumper, large fog lamps with stone guards, large diameter all-season tyres, two-tone body colour, and oversized side protectors.
Over the last couple of decades, we have continued to refine, redefine and enhance our core models, incorporating new technologies and innovation into each incarnation such as improved safety technology, in-car digital experiences and ergonomic designs. Have no doubt, we will continue to evolve as long as our wheels revolve.
In 1997, the high-riding Forester took to the road, offering ‘roamatherapy’ to its devotees. A reduced wheelbase, 200mm ground clearance and high seating position equipped the Forester for poor roads with excellent ride quality. An honourable mention must also fall to the Giugiaro-designed SVX coupe from this decade, a car that typified an unrelenting quest to fast forward design, technology and engineering. Deceptively fast with tyre-melting torque.
Subaru SVX
Hence the launch of the Subaru BRZ, an adrenalin-filled sports car that adds a grin to driving with its surprising grip. It has an astonishingly low centre of gravity; and by mounting the light compact Subaru Boxer engine centrally, the BRZ is an exemplar for handling, balance and poise. B roads never felt so agreeable. Then there’s our latest class-leading 4x4 compact crossover, the XV, which has been recently recognised as the Best In Class Safest Small Family Car of 2017 by Euro NCAP. Who wouldn’t want to boast about some of the best crash test scores in the automotive world? It’s a testament to our undiminished ambition to never compromise on anything. Ever. And that’s our history. 60 years of Subaru in a nutshell. Striving to design and build cars that continue to be better, where it matters.

SUBARU XV:
The safest car for families With a remarkable safety rating, the accolade of the Safest Small Family Car of 2017 from Euro NCAP, and plenty of clever technology, the Subaru XV makes for the perfect family car.

SUBARU MAGAZINE
The SUV crossover is the ideal vehicle for life in town, mixing an elevated driving position and great styling with hatchback practicality. But you shouldn’t have to scrimp on safety, capability or reliability to get the body style you want – and with the Subaru XV, you don’t have to.
you’re changing lane but also for crossing traffic behind you when you’re reversing out of a parking space,” she says. “It’s definitely saved us a scrape in the supermarket car park.”
Lucy and Chris had safety at the top of their list when they chose the XV as their family car. With daughter Millie on board, they felt happier in a vehicle that was awarded Safest Small Family Car by the crash-test experts at Euro NCAP in 2017. They knew the car’s trademark Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive would keep them out of trouble on their frequent camping trips to the country, because sending power to all four wheels, all of the time, means no loss of traction when conditions get slippery. And they’re still confident that it has enough practicality to cope with Millie’s brother or sister, who’s due to arrive soon. What has surprised them, though, is the way the Subaru has made their lives easier around town. It’s proof that the best safety systems, like the XV’s camera-based EyeSight tech, which actively tracks other vehicles and pedestrians, bring reassurance in everyday use as well as protecting against accidents. “The EyeSight system is always looking out for you,” says Chris. “It’s especially reassuring to know that it’s watching when the noise from Millie in the back seat becomes distracting.” “The cameras are always looking at what is in front,” says Lucy, “and EyeSight will give you warnings or even apply the brakes to slow you down (or stop you completely) if there’s a risk of hitting something. It’s like a second set of eyes that are constantly looking at the road. In fact, the whole car is loaded with things that just make driving easier, all designed to keep you safe.” Lucy also says the Subaru’s blind spot sensors have benefits beyond dual carriageways and motorways, where they flash up a warning if there’s an approaching car out of your own line of sight. “They keep a check not just when
Blind spot warning
The XV’s in-car tech also helps with another potentially stressful task: keeping Millie amused during trips across town. “Our daughter loves listening to Roald Dahl audiobooks, which we can download and use thanks to the Apple CarPlay™ functionality,” says Lucy. “They’re brilliant for a quiet trip to the grandparents. And when I’m on my own in the car, I like listening to podcasts.” In fact, the XV has reached the point where it’s pretty much secured a spot as the fourth member of Lucy and Chris’s expanding line-up. “Keeping us all safe on the road has to be our top priority and the XV does that,” says Chris. “There’s plenty of space for the buggy and bags too, and we need a car that won’t let us down, so Subaru’s reputation for reliability sealed the deal for us. It’s part of the family.”

TESTING, TESTING The history and innovation behind Subaru safety. If we were to invent a new simile, then ‘as safe as a Subaru’ would be a great way to describe our credentials over the years.
Since the company first began in aircraft manufacturing over 60 years ago, safety is something that we’ve pursued in every design and build. Today, as a car-maker, we remain committed to protecting our customers and their families wherever they choose to drive. Dummies guide to collisions We began performing collision tests using guide rails and crash test dummies back in the early 1960s –well before industry-wide crash testing was even required. In fact, we were the first Japanese manufacturer to crash test the front and rear end of vehicles, starting with the Subaru 360. During the 70s, we introduced a special Subaru collision safety programme on the Subaru Leone 4WD Station Wagon. ‘Safety first’ became our mantra and designs

included the propeller shaft and differential dropping safely down below the passenger compartment during a collision, diverting the force of any impact away from passengers. In the 80s we continued to raise safety standards further, introducing innovative features like energyabsorbing bumpers, brake booster braking systems and high-tensile materials for car frames. And as data started to dictate technology over the next decade, we began to use technical information to help improve strength and rigidity. Of course, we always benefited from the Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive traction advantage, but also started to surround the shell with Ring-Shaped Reinforcement Frames. This body and front frame structure enveloped the Horizontally-Opposed Boxer engine, and the installation of front side
airbags further raised collision safety to unprecedented levels. In 2003, we constructed our own crash test facilities to be able to recreate actual crash conditions and later introduced Dynamic Chassis Control to make the suspension more adaptive to the road. EyeSight Driver Assist technology was introduced in 2008. The world’s first safety technology to use only stereo cameras, it has subsequently developed into one of the most sophisticated safety systems on the market. This innovative technology was introduced to the UK market when the new Outback was launched in 2015. More recently, in 2017, we introduced the Subaru Global Platform (SGP) in the all-new Impreza and XV models, improving overall handling and steering to deliver premiumlevel refinement. This technology will underpin all new vehicles going forward. The platform has also been designed to be compatible with crash standards as far ahead as 2025. Advanced safety packages have also come on board as the digital world drives on relentlessly. Features include Rear Vehicle Detection, Side View Monitors, and High Beam Assist

IN FOCUS SUBARU XV The Subaru XV was awarded the maximum 5-star safety rating in the 2017 Euro NCAP safety performance tests and has been declared Euro NCAP’s BEST IN CLASS Safest Small Family Car 2017. XV achieved the best scores in its segment for Adult Occupant, Child Occupant and Pedestrian Protection and ‘very good’ performance for its Autonomous Emergency Braking and Lane Support Systems.
Subaru XV Euro NCAP crash test
- all designed to help keep you and your loved ones safe at all times. The scores on the Subaru doors For safety’s sake, we have continued to test, test and test again. The more we all understand what happens in a collision, the more we can do to avoid them or at least minimise their impact. It’s no accident that we have achieved Global and Euro NCAP ratings that are the envy of the motoring world. NCAP stands for New Car Assessment Programme and are independent, regularly updated crash tests. The higher the rating achieved by a vehicle, graded from zero to five stars, the safer the car. A 5-star rating means ‘overall good performance in crash protection’. The latest Subaru models – the XV, Forester, Outback, Impreza and Levorg – all hold impressive Euro NCAP 5-star ratings, along with the ’Safest Small Family Car of 2017’ title for XV and Impreza. Our axis of safety Our vision of ‘Safety First’ is built around four pillars of protection. 1 | Primary Safety considers safety from the initial stages of the vehicle’s design such as form and operation; it includes blind spot minimisation, optimum driving position, an adjustable driver’s seat and an intuitive interface designed to reduce distractions.
2 | Active safety refines all the basic functions of a car – driving, turning and stopping – to deliver exceptional stability and predictable control. The Subaru Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive, Hill-start Assist, Vehicle Dynamics Control and Electric Brake-force Distribution are features that put control back in the safe hands of the driver. 3 | Passive Safety aims to protect passengers in the event of a collision, evidenced by features such as the Ring-Shaped Reinforcement Framed body or the engine layout that protects passengers from shocks in the event of a crash. 4 | Preventative safety is about helping to eliminate accidents and is our ultimate goal. We have developed innovative technologies like EyeSight, Rear Vehicle Detection, Side View Monitoring, High Beam Assist, Steering Responsive Headlights and an Emergency Stop Signalall offering invaluable help and assistance to the driver. As history shows, there’s safe and there’s Subaru safe. But we won’t stop innovating as we continue to strive to reduce the number of accidents and collisions on the road.
SUBARU FORESTER The Forester boasts high scores in all four main test areas with a maximum score for protecting body regions in the side barrier test. Front bumpers scored maximum points for protecting pedestrians’ legs. A 91 per cent rating for Child Occupant Protection plus the inclusion of advanced safety assist equipment places the Forester among the safest vehicles on the road.
SUBARU OUTBACK Against Euro NCAP’s stringent requirements, the Outback performed well in adult crash test protection, with maximum points awarded in the side impact barrier test. In dynamic crash tests the Outback scored maximum points for protecting small infants. For pedestrians, the bumper provided good protection to legs. Performance on open road conditions of the EyeSight driver assist system was rated ‘good’.

LOOKING AHEAD: SUBARU’S INNOVATIVE DRIVER ASSIST TECHNOLOGY EyeSight – an extra pair of eyes on the road Amidst the growing number of driver safety systems appearing in new vehicles, Subaru’s driver assist technology stands out. At its core is EyeSight: Subaru’s innovative technology that helps the driver avoid a collision in the first place. How could a system achieve this? Well, it all starts with having an extra pair of eyes on the road… EyeSight is an intelligent two camera, stereo imaging system mounted either side of the rearview mirror which scans the road ahead for potential hazards. EyeSight technology accurately recognises objects that are directly ahead, including cars, motorcycles and pedestrians. It can even detect clearly marked traffic lanes. Should EyeSight detect a potential collision risk, the system gives the driver both audible and visual warnings as well as driving assistance as required. Subaru EyeSight’s two stereo cameras

SUBARU MAGAZINE
All eyes on the road ahead. And behind. Eyesight comprises of six innovative safety systems: Pre-collision Braking System EyeSight constantly monitors the road ahead for potential collisions and alerts drivers by displaying a visual and audible warning signal on their dashboard. If the driver fails to take evasive action, the brakes will be applied automatically to either prevent an accident entirely or reduce the severity of an impact depending on speed. The system will increase braking force if the driver brakes but does not apply enough pressure for emergency deceleration. Pre-collision Throttle Management Should the driver accidentally accelerate when an obstacle is detected in front, EyeSight will provide a visual and audible warning to alert the driver and reduce throttle output to ensure the start is slow and gradual, giving the driver additional time to brake.
EyeSight Adaptive Cruise Control
Adaptive Cruise Control Adaptive Cruise Control detects the vehicle in front within the same lane, then controls the throttle and brake in order to automatically maintain a distance that corresponds with the vehicles set speed – especially useful on dual/single carriageways and motorways; not city traffic.
Pre-collision Braking System
Lead Vehicle Start Alert In stationary traffic, should a driver fail to notice that the vehicle in front has started to pull away, EyeSight will prompt the driver to proceed with audible and visual alerts. Lane Sway and Departure Warning If a driver begins to wander or drift in-between lanes, or starts to depart a lane without signalling, the driver will get an audible and visual warning to alert them of the potential hazard. Lane Keep Assist If the vehicle unintentionally deviates from its lane, the EyeSight system will step in and offer gentle corrective steering control to assist the driver.

ON AND OFF THE ROAD ...in the hugely capable Subaru Forester
Whether you’re after safety, all-terrain prowess or reliability, the Subaru Forester should be on your shortlist…
SUV buyers need a multi-talented car they can depend on. It has to combine strong safety credentials with impeccable reliability and impressive capability in all weathers and over any terrain. This was the list of requirements drawn up by David Wood from Sussex, and he decided that only one model could fulfil his needs: the Subaru Forester. David is among an increasing number of drivers for whom the Forester is the best-kept secret on the road, and he told us: “Probably the biggest reason why I love my Subaru is that it not only fits into my life, but also allows me to do the stuff I love. “I spend most of the week at my desk, so I like to make the most of the great outdoors at the weekend. One of my hobbies is fell running. It’s great fun, and I love the challenge. Some people think it’s just running in the countryside, but I can tell you running through the Brecon Beacons isn’t easy in the middle of the winter – or at any other time of the year!”
David Wood
14
But while David is happy to take risks on the fells, nothing short of complete safety is good enough when he’s behind the wheel. He said: “I like to push my boundaries when I’m running – on the road I’m completely different. When I’m driving, keeping safe is my number one priority. It’s one of the main reasons I bought the Forester, with its five-star Euro NCAP safety rating and clever EyeSight driver assistance technology.”
SUBARU MAGAZINE
What makes the Forester really stand out here for David is the EyeSight system. This uses dual cameras to scan the road ahead for potential dangers, and helps to keep him safe by providing warnings and even collision avoidance assistance if it’s needed. He told us there have been times when he’s been driving home after a long day of fell running and EyeSight’s Precollision Braking System has alerted him to hazards that he was slow to pick out himself. It’s even stepped in on the odd occasion to deliver braking assistance, helping him avoid a nasty incident. He told us the lane departure warning and lane keep assist systems are excellent, ensuring his attention remains on the road, especially on long motorway journeys. But David didn’t want a car focusing on safety at the expense of everything else. He takes a lot of confidence from its always-on Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive system, which transmits power to all four wheels, all of the time. This ensures the car can cope with any terrain and all weather conditions, and makes it the perfect all-rounder in David’s eyes. Adding to the rugged appeal is its impressive 220mm ground clearance, while its X-Mode technology takes command of the engine, gearbox and brakes to maintain a constant, controlled speed and maximum traction in challenging conditions. And Hill Descent Control allows the car to take steep slopes in its stride. These features
Subaru’s X-Mode display
mean David can head far off the beaten track in the knowledge that he’ll get safely back on the road again. So the Forester is the ultimate package for the outdoor lifestyle David leads. And he summed up why himself: “Super safe, incredibly practical and unbeatable off road... the Subaru Forester suits me perfectly!”

MIND OVER MUD Your Subaru is more than up to the task of handling a few off-road adventures, so we’ve teamed up with two-time British Cross Country Championship winner and off-road tutor Jason Sharpe to make sure you’re ready to tame the trails.
The basics
Make sure you’ve cleaned your windows for perfect visibility, pack a tow rope and spade and, in case you end up somewhere truly ridiculous, bring your mobile and car charger. Also make sure you’ve let a friend know where you’re off to. Off-road trails often have very little phone reception, so have a plan ‘B’ ready. If you’ve checked your Subaru’s oil, coolant and fuel levels – you’re ready to enjoy a day’s off roading.
Tyre checks
Thanks to Subaru’s Symmetrical AllWheel Drive system, you’ll be able to handle a surprising amount of terrain
16
on the standard set of tyres. However, if your route often involves soft sand, really wet mud or often takes you to even more extreme environments, we would recommend you invest in a set of specialist off road tyres.
Look ahead
It’s essential when off road driving to ‘read’ the terrain. Look as far ahead as you can, especially for large holes, boulders or ruts that might impede your progress or damage your vehicle. If there’s any doubt, it’s always wise to get out and walk the next few yards first, before you drive it. That way, you’ll be able to pick the line that’s easiest and kindest for the car.
SUBARU MAGAZINE
Climb every mountain
Subarus will climb and descend surprisingly steep hills, but always make sure you’re approaching each one dead straight – and never at an angle. If you lose traction when climbing, it’s often easier to stop, select reverse and go gently backwards with the wheels straight before starting again. Going down, it’s great to use the superb descent control feature offered by ‘X Mode’ on the latest models, but if you have an earlier Subaru, select first gear and take your time, again, making sure the steering wheel stays as straight as possible, keeping your hands at ‘ten-to-two’ and your thumbs out of the spokes. Have fun in your Subaru off-road, tread lightly on the trails – and stay safe.
Easy does it
Unlike when we’re competing, we have a mantra for leisure off roading and that’s as slow as possible – and as fast as necessary. It’s a great one to remember. Going at a steady pace allows you time to decide on your
route, as well as making sure you’re not over-stressing the car. That said, in some instances, a little momentum will carry you through, so learn to balance your throttle inputs to always have ‘just enough’ speed for the terrain.
17
F E AT U R E A R T I C L E
AFTER A WEEKEND OFF THE BEATEN TRACK, IS YOUR CAR SET FOR ITS NEXT ADVENTURE? Thanks to decades of off road experience, not much touches the ability of your Subaru – especially when it comes to leaving the ribbon-smooth tarmac of the ‘A’ road and swapping it for more challenging off road environments. In a world full of lookalike SUVs, it’s good to know that the Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive system in your car offers unrivalled capability in almost any terrain. But it’s always prudent to remember that once the mud-plugging fun is over, it’s not just you that will need a bit of TLC.
18
We’ve pulled together our top tips to keep your car in shape after any off-road adventures, making sure your Subaru is in the best possible condition and raring to go again. Clean and tidy Mud’s an awful lot of fun to play in – but it’s not great for your bodywork or chassis components. Spend some quality time with your car, first rinsing all loose dirt away with a jet-wash or hose, before using a decent shampoo and plenty of water to remove the rest. Spend some time under the car too, cleaning brakes, wheel arches and suspension arms. Not only will it keep your Subaru looking showroom-fresh, but it also makes the following checks easier. Tyred out? If you have slightly lowered your tyre pressures to gain optimum off road grip, it’s now a great time to check all of your tyres, and return them to the specified settings on the driver’s door sticker. While you’re there, take a moment to inspect the side walls and tread of each tyre, looking for any nicks or cuts that may have happened off road. Remove any large stones that may have stuck in the tyre tread, too. Get your motor running Time to pop the bonnet and check your fluid levels. Even on a car as capable as your Subaru, it’s still worth taking a moment to check your coolant, washer
fluid and brake fluid levels after an intense off-road session. Dust and dirt aren’t great bedfellows for all those moving parts either, so if it looks like a dried-up river bed in there, give all non-electrical components a gentle wash to clean them up. Classy chassis The final check? A good look underneath, checking shock absorbers for dents and damage, gaiters and racks for any contact - and ensuring that the factory-applied rust prevention hasn’t been scored away by any errant rocks. We build them tough, but even the best need a little once-over after a hard day’s play. The easy solution? Of course, there is a much easier way to gain peace of mind and keep your prideand-joy in perfect running order. Your local Subaru dealer will be delighted to perform a multi-point post-off-road check for you while you enjoy a relaxing coffee and take it easy. Best of all, their fully trained valeters can also turn back time on all of those muddy marks and body blemishes that you may have picked up.

Each one is carefully designed to work perfectly with the safety systems in your Subaru – and many are detachable, meaning that once your towing duties have been dispensed, you can restore the clean, crisp lines of your car once again.
Roof boxes There’s nothing worse than a stingy baggage allowance, is there? Make sure you can all go VIP – and save a little room for souvenir shopping with our choice of roof bars and boxes. With up to 430 additional litres of secure storage up above in one of our beautifully styled and branded boxes with plenty of weight allowance, it certainly beats any budget airline. 20

Latest Subaru news and reviews from across the media Take the wheel of any Subaru and you will experience the best in safety, capability and reliability. For 60 years these qualities have been at the heart of every vehicle we’ve built. We think world-class safety is essential, not an optional extra. That’s why we’ve been crash testing our cars since 1965, long before it was a standard requirement. We develop safety features to go beyond the highest European standards, to give you peace of mind for every journey.
REMARKABLY SAFE Further assistance for the driver comes in the shape of the EyeSight package, which includes a slew of autonomous safety kit. We’re of the opinion that this functions more intuitively than any other manufacturers’ tech, and this is backed up by impressive scores in safety tests, including five stars in the 2018-spec Euro NCAP test.” – Car “Built on the all-new Subrau Global Platform underpinnings, it comes packed with safety technology and a five-star Euro NCAP rating that ranks it, in terms of passenger protection, top of the compact family car class.” – Autocar “Subaru has improved the XV in lots of ways, but mostly where it was already good anyway. It’s now more capable off road, better to drive and safer than ever.” – Auto Express The new XV handles better than before. We also appreciate its feeling of invincibility. With so much of its development budget clearly spent on engineering, it’s not only safe, but feels like it could last forever.” - Motoring Research
On road, off road and in any weather, Subarus are built to perform. Our expert engineering and the unique combination of Boxer engine and permanent Symmetrical AllWheel Drive delivers outstanding performance, however challenging the terrain or conditions. GETS TO PLACES OTHERS CAN’T “Sportier and less bulky than more conventional SUVs, it has a unique appeal. A genuinely interesting alternative to the usual suspects.” – Carbuyer “There’s more to those building blocks than mere tradition: the horizontally-opposed four-cylinder keeps the centre of gravity low, the permanent 4x4 means it’s competent off-road, and the automatic transmission is crucial for the EyeSight safety system, which helps make Subarus some of the safest cars on sale” - Telegraph “A whole redesign and new global platform means the new XV is a complete step-change for the model. The Subaru XV rocks a lower profile than rivals, offering improved stability and handling.” – The Car Expert “There’s a school of thought that says that crossovers are all about style over substance. The Subaru XV, with its rugged construction and genuine off-road ability, proves that’s not always the case.” – Pocket-lint “It’s a thoroughly modern car, well thought-out, roomy, loaded with tech and safety kit, and with a quality cabin.” – Belfast Telegraph

IMPREZA GOES EVEN FURTHER “The Impreza’s chassis feels capable, safe and resilient, and it should stay that way if you venture off-road, going further than much of the competition.” – The Independent “Ride quality is nothing short of exceptional on all surfaces and puts firmer, sportier rivals to shame. With an impressive blend of equipment, cutting-edge safety tech, practicality and a near faultless reputation for reliability, the Impreza would make a left-field yet capable choice.” – Car “A car that takes the ingredients of its predecessor but improves it: it’s better to drive, has a more modern interior, gets lots of safety equipment, should prove to be reliable and will still go farther than all of its rivals offroad.” – WhatCar? “This is a dependable car that offers security in wet conditions. Especially when backed up by the excellent safety systems.” – Daily Express

YOUR HANDS ON THE WHEEL, NOT IN YOUR WALLET Amid the crackdown on drivers using mobile phones at the wheel, UK police forces are to start using unmarked lorries to spot drivers using their mobile phones illegally on the go. In addition to the numerous safety risks, you can be fined up to £200 and receive 6 points on your licence if you’re caught - double the previous penalties. Auto Express reported that the unmarked lorries, exempt from standard HGV restrictions and fitted with wide-angle cameras, draw up alongside a driver using their mobile to record the offence, before the patrol cars tailing the HGVs pull over the offender. A prior trial across 28 police forces
led to 4000 drivers caught offending, while other behindthe-wheel offences were also recorded. The safety implications alone mean that using a phone at the wheel is simply not worth it, while systems like Apple CarPlay™ and Android Auto™; (standard fit on every new Subaru XV, Outback and Impreza); mean you can safely remain in contact without risking your safety, or a hefty fine and points on your licence. The systems allow a seamless link between your phone and the car’s infotainment touchscreen, allowing the use of navigation applications, call management and other selected applications for safe use on the go. Texting functions can also be accessed, using the vehicle’s microphone and voice recognition systems so your eyes remain on the road when replying to a message. Incoming messages can also be read aloud to the driver. High-profile cases of drivers using mobile phones causing fatal accidents have prompted the crackdown on mobile use behind the wheel. Despite the new tougher penalties however, Government figures reveal that more than 26,000 drivers have been caught flouting the rules in the year since the new fines came into effect.

HOOKED ON SUBARU A Subaru enthusiast with five Foresters under her belt, we catch up with Gillian Walker from Wales to find out what makes her tick.
Q
You’re now retired but you’re still pretty active? Yes, still going! Golf, mountain walking, singing in a choir. And I still travel widely in Wales and the Marches, which include some of my favourite places. My late husband never drove in his life - he reckoned he wasn’t safe on the road - so I did all the driving. I passed my test 52 years ago in a huge Austin Vanden Plas Princess and I’ve lost count of the number of cars I have owned since.
Q
Do you still love driving? Absolutely. I’ve lived in the South of England, the Midlands and Wales, often covering 30,000 miles a year with my work. And I still love getting behind the wheel.
Q
And you’ve been a Subaru fan since when? I came across a Silver Forester diesel by chance for sale on the forecourt of Brookside, a local garage and thought I’d try it. Although it had high mileage, it never let me down, that’s what is so great about Subaru’s - they are so reliable. That was in 2000 – and it had about 100k on the clock when I sold it in 2005! After that I bought a Forester Turbo S and then a Forester Turbo S Green. Although I was hooked on Subarus, I did stray to other cars for a while, but in 2015 I came back to a Forester X, diesel and manual in Venetian Red. I really loved that car – it’s the

colour, the shape, the performance. Very classy! The only reason I sold it was to buy my new one. It’s a new Forester XC. Diesel and manual. Blue. Once again from Brookside.
Q
What do you love most about Subarus? Well, where do I start? They look, and are, solid and capable. They are large - which I like, and really shift when I have to put my foot down. You get the feeling that they are engineered to as near perfection as possible in a car.
Q
Is safety a big thing for you? Most definitely. On the road, they corner well without swaying a passenger from side to side. Off road, they’re nothing short of superb. I live on the side of a mountain in north Wales, up a single-track lane with cattle grids. Last Winter really proved how wonderful the Forester is. I tackled snow, floods and ice without ever feeling that the car was out of control. Even on downward slopes. And if I really go off-road (usually to check for sheep before letting my springer spaniel loose) it’s no problem. Something I wouldn’t do in any other car - 4-wheel drive or not.
Q
What are your best memories in a Subaru? I have had so many memorable and happy moments in my Foresters – simply driving them! I remember spending a whole week in Ireland just cruising around – wonderful! ow are you getting on with your new Forester? It’s early days, but so far I love it! Even with all the new stuff like Bluetooth, DAB radio and automatic lights. I’m still learning new things every time I pick up the handbook!

We catch up with exSubaru salesman turned popular TV presenter Paul Cowland, to see how he feels the brand has evolved over the last few decades.
THE SUBARU EVOLUTION 60 years of developing the safest, most capable and reliable cars on the road today. It’s a wise manufacturer that can always take to the ‘temperature of the room’ – but somehow, Subaru always seems to manage it.
Since then, Subaru’s impressive instinct for building exactly what drivers are looking for at the time hasn’t changed.
I’ve been lucky enough to work with, for and around the brand since the late ‘90s, and have been an avid enthusiast since the groundbreaking Impreza transformed the performance car market in 1993.
The 90’s was the peak of the WRC Rallying era; not only were Subaru the fastest on the rally stage, but the models were the fastest off the showroom floor too. The Impreza offered true supercar performance in

a practical package that the average enthusiast could afford. Everybody wanted one – and who can blame them? In its various guises, the Impreza, the WRX, then the STi, have served to define the motorsport DNA of the brand. These cars distil the dynamic experience of driving something much more expensive into an everyman package. It’s what Subaru has always done so well.
Clearly noting the increase in the lifestyle market, it’s been really interesting to see how the Forester, Outback and XV models have become the mainstay of the range throughout the Noughties and up to the present day. It’s fair to argue that the Outback created the whole ‘jacked-up, goanywhere Estate’ genre in the first place, and despite a few challengers copying its DNA, it’s still the original driver favourite. It’s obvious that the early Subaru enthusiasts are growing up with their brand – and the cars are stepping up to the task at hand. It’s wonderful to see that the very latest range of Subaru cars still have the crisp driving dynamics that we all fell in love with in those early models, but these days, thanks to an unending quest for safety, cars like the XV and Impreza are literally the safest buys in their class, across the UK, Europe and overseas.
comfortable on the motorway as anything you could imagine, and as for its off-road performance, it’s fair to say it’s in its element. In short, it’s the best all-round car I’ve ever driven – and there have been a fair few over the years!

TRUE NORTH A lifelong obsession with clay shooting and Subaru What makes Subaru a Subaru? Is it the class leading safety credentials? The technical capability? The renowned reliability? In truth it’s all of these things but we think, more importantly, it’s our drivers and customers that truly epitomise what Subarus really are. We caught up with Anita North, a long-term Subaru owner whose passion for exploring has seen her seek adventure around the UK and the rest of the world.
Q
What gets you out of bed in the morning? Clay shooting, to be honest. It’s become a lifelong obsession. I only took it up as something to do, but that quickly changed when I realised I was pretty good at it. Very good, actually! I ended up competing for England and then GB. Although I’ve retired from competing, I still coach and have made friends through it all over the world. My ‘clay shooting family’, I like to call them! I also enjoy walking, travelling and spending time with my hubby, Tony and our Border Collie, Mr Cutie – which he most certainly is.
Q
Tell us about your travelling exploits. I love travelling and exploring – both in the UK and around the world, in and out of my Subaru. I have been fortunate through my competing to visit countries that I may not have otherwise gone to; the USA, Australia,
34
India, Japan, Kuwait, Egypt, Belarus, Russia and China. New Zealand with my husband stands out to me in particular - we had two amazing holidays over there, the first time for three weeks and then for a longer six weeks. Both trips involved driving some 3000 miles around the islands in a Subaru, the perfect car for exploring and heading off the beaten track! We also love the UK - anywhere from the Lizard in Cornwall to the Scottish Highlands.
Q
So what’s your favourite place? Sounds a bit sad, but wherever there’s a clay shooting ground! Seriously, though, you can’t beat the Norfolk Coast, the Lizard peninsular in Cornwall or the Lake District. Oh, and the Scottish Highlands - that drive from Loch Ness to the West Coast is pretty epic, especially when you can pull over anywhere and really take in the scenery.
Name: Anita North Age: 55 Current car: Subaru Outback Length of ownership: 6 Months Previous cars: Two Imprezas, one Legacy B Spec, two Legacy Tourers
Q
Why Subaru then? From my first experience of a Subaru - a test drive in an Impreza - I fell in love. It really is a driver’s car, and just a pleasure to drive too. I know it’ll keep me safe on the road but it’s also super-comfy on those long drives. And you know what? I can get so much luggage and gear in without hassle.
Q
What does your Subaru allow you to do that other cars can’t? Definitely heading off road. More importantly, I know that I’m safe doing it – whether it’s rough tracks or no tracks. I love exploring new places or taking on challenging drives.
Q
You say you feel safe in your Subaru – why? Yes, I feel super safe in it. Great grip, balance – especially when cornering – and good protection. In one of my previous Subarus, I was actually

hit head on by another vehicle - a horrible, scary experience. But the Subaru absorbed the hit, kept me safe and luckily I walked away shaken, bruised, but unharmed.
Q
What’s your best memory with your Subaru? Wow! That’s a hard one to answer, but a couple do spring to mind. First, I remember driving my first Subaru after I had just medalled at the 2002 Commonwealth Games. It was a
red Impreza and it became my lucky charm from that day on. Second, it’s got to be that feeling when you’ve driven another vehicle, like a hire car on holiday, and you get back into your Subaru. Within seconds you realise just how good it is to drive, how sure-footed it feels on and off the road and how happy you just feel driving it.
Q
Anything else to add? I do want to give a shout out to Unity Automotive - they have looked after me for four Subarus now. The team at Leicester have always been really supportive and I am so thankful for all their encouragement.

TEAMWORK MAKES THE DREAM WORK For Subaru Northern Ireland It’s not just exceptional service that’s won Subaru dealers in Northern Ireland an enviable reputation over the years. Alongside loyal customers, they also share a passion for raising funds and awareness for charities. Thanks to numerous activities including auctions, raffles and fun days out, good causes across the Emerald Isle have received much-needed funds. The Northern Ireland dealer network offers a combined wealth of experience with infectious enthusiasm. Eastwood Motors, one of the longest – established and most successful dealerships, and Western Cars, who recently celebrated their third birthday with Subaru, are both ’hands on’ owner driven businesses. We catch up with Des Eastwood and Pat McCaffrey, two dealer principals 38
who have played an active role in the success of the network and its acclaimed reputation. Loyal owner supporters ”We have great personal relationships with our Subaru owners,” Des Eastwood explains. ”Many are genuine friends and have bought multiple cars over the years, introducing their own friends and families to the brand.” ”Our customers love their Subaru vehicles and we try and amplify their experience as best as we can. For example, we held an annual Subaru day where we took over a hotel and marina in the beautiful County Fermanagh Lakeland. It was an exclusive day of activities including on and off-road driving, with cream teas included of course. And when Subaru entered the British Touring

Fundraising and fun ”Our staff got right behind the idea and so far we’ve helped raise substantial funds and awareness. We’ve even donated a vehicle to a charity for a year through the connections we’ve made. Our proudest achievement is fundraising for a blind Ulster athlete to compete in China’s Paralympics – an opportunity that will make our whole country proud.”
The fundraising efforts haven’t stopped there. With customer support the network has partnered with local children’s charities, helped premature babies, raised funds to help combat cot death and supported a number of truly inspirational locals. Last year the third annual Subaru Charity Run from Belfast to Dublin saw over 120 Subaru owners gathered together to make a difference. With the route taking
competitors over a number of Circuit of Ireland Rally stages, it was one seriously fun day. ”The events just keep getting bigger and bigger” says Pat McCaffrey, ”The support we receive comes from all over Northern Ireland and even the rest of the UK. We just really enjoy making a difference with like-minded people. It’s great that Subaru has brought us all together. Since joining the franchise in November 1979, the company have been awarded Subaru UK’s dealer of the year status no less than six times. As a family-run business in Ayr, Scotland, and boasting many loyal Subaru customers in rural areas, we decided to find out a bit more about the dealer and their time with the brand.
Q
Why did you first join the Subaru brand? Bob Edmiston was setting up International Motors, we had a good relationship with him when he was the finance director at Jensen Motors. If Bob saw something special in Subaru, that was good enough for us to want to be a part of it too.
Q
What keeps you with the brand today? Probably the fact that the brand constantly remains fresh and engaging. It never sits on its laurels: it’s always pushing forward with new products and innovations. That plus the brand’s reliability and performance keeps our customers happy and loyal. It’s a winwin relationship.
Q
How have you seen the brand evolve? Over the years we’ve repeatedly seen Subaru achieve exactly what’s promised. The technical developments have always been brilliant; who would have thought all those years ago when we started we would have cars with EyeSight that can intelligently apply the brakes?

How would you describe Subaru to a new customer or person? Subaru’s use of its Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive and Boxer engine is unique within the market; it delivers incredible balance, handling and control at all times. Also, the build quality of Subaru cars is second to none – especially with the new Global Manufacturing platform being used on all models going forward.

What’s it like working with Subaru customers? Subaru customers have a high interest in our products from both technical and build quality perspective. Performance and engineering pedigree is everything. The looks of the car are secondary for them; what really matters is what’s under the bonnet and the chassis and how well the car handles.
Q
What’s your relationship like with the local community? We pride ourselves on our excellent relationships with our customers. Throughout our 38 years with the brand we have some customers who’ve had 15 Subarus over the years and

continue to keep in touch with us on a regular basis.
Q
Have you got any memorable stories from your time with the brand? Initially when the Subaru Pickup was launched we made appointments with local Estates. On arrival the standard comment was ’And what are you going to do with that?’ We would then load the pickup along with their own vehicle (which was typically a Land Rover) and get them to lead on through rutted tracks and grassy hills. Of course, Subaru with its lighter ground pressures, would outperform the Land Rover – much to their amazement. We made many conquest sales using that simple ‘see for yourself’ approach.
Q
What’s been the most popular car you sold? Our most popular models were the MV Pickup and the ever-popular WRX STI. But looking back in total we have sold in excess of 3000 Subaru vehicles,

evenly spread between the Forester, Outback and the Impreza.
Q
What are you looking forward to with Subaru in the future? In the future the team at S&S looks forward to seeing Subaru’s classleading technology continue to evolve - and a fair reward for long hours and dedicated work by our team!

BEST IN CLASS 2017 S M A L L FA M I LY CA R
MANY CARS WERE HARMED IN THE MAKING OF THE XV. THE ALL-NEW XV. We think world-class safety is essential, not an optional extra. That’s why we’ve been crash testing our cars since 1965, long before it was a standard requirement. Euro NCAP’s BEST IN CLASS Safest Small Family Car 2017.
