Vice-President’s Report
H
i all,
I am writing this report just before the school holidays and lots of our members are going to be out and about over the holidays. No matter where you go at this time of the year, I hope you have a wonderful, safe and warm journey (except for those going to the snow... I hope the cold weather stays there and it snows and snows and snows for you). Our calendar is looking a bit light for the rest of the year so PLEASE see the Trip Convenors if you have a suggestion for a trip or if you’d like to run a trip. No need to spend weeks preparing for a trip. John Evans led a fantastic trip mushrooming at Jenolan State Forest and Oberon area which he put up the week before. We all had a wonderful time – read our trip report on page 25. If you need some help organising a trip or making it a bit longer from the collective experience of the club, I am sure you will be assisted! If you are keen to get out more please speak to the TRIP CONVENORS. A huge thanks to David Wellham who ran a great trip to Burralow for our June meeting. We all had a wonderful time and loved the trivia he ran at the end of the meeting. The wine prize was also very nice. This meeting was well attended with quite a few members coming only for the meeting and dinner. The club’s AGM is fast approaching. Please make sure you have paid your membership fees so that you have a say in who runs this great club. If you are going to be away, please send a proxy form stating who you would like to see in the various committee roles. Please consider taking on a role on the committee yourself. All positions are declared vacant so that others can have the opportunity to be on the committee. Our Christmas Party will be help on 25 - 26 November at Wollondilly River Station on the road to Wombeyan Caves. Please register for this trip so that I can confirm numbers. We will have a gathering like we did last year, starting with a few cocktails before moving onto dinner and festivities. All camping costs and other information will be confirmed soon. Our Editor is doing a wonderful job with the magazine. To make this job slightly easier there are a few things we can all do. Trip Leaders: please designate a trip reporter early in the day. If you are chosen, please write your trip report as soon as possible after the trip so that it is still fresh in your mind. Everyone else: first, thank your lucky stars you’re not writing the trip report but remember, you can take photos and send to the Editor with captions. Also keep your eye out for silly things to fine people for. It is not only the Trip Leader who is responsible for the fines; usually they are getting the fines! At the next meeting jot down the fines into the Sergeant-at-Arms' book. Socially, if you are interested in coming to Parramatta on our usual club night. We are going to Riverside Theatre on July 14th at 7:30pm to watch Chantelle, Lauren and Kaitlin performing in Cumberland Gangshow. If you would like tickets for this fantastic show please call me on 0414870168 as I have some available at a great price of $26 for adults and $17 for children. That’s is all for now. Have a great July! See you out there on a track somewhere.

Stuff - It Happens On Trips By Brett Hampson
O
n a recent trip to the Victorian High Country, a few incidents occurred. I thought they could be used to explain that on trips, anything can happen, and what we have learned from them.
On the way to Dargo after the club’s Easter trip, there was a long downhill run that ended up being longer and steeper than I expected. Jo was in front of me while Nathan was behind me; we were all towing trailers. I found my brakes becoming a little spongey and my car was slowly catching up with Jo’s trailer, which meant having to brake harder. The car was slowing but certainly not what it normally would. At the same time, Nathan said over the radio that a bad smell was coming from a car in front, shortly followed by ‘Brett, I think your brakes are on fire’. Jo, luckily, was at a clearing so she pulled over and I pulled up behind her (yes, I could still stop) and jumped out to see smoke pouring from my front brakes but luckily no flames. Phew… and at that time Nathan jumped out of his car and was walking towards mine when I looked back at his. “Ummmm…. you got more smoke coming from yours than I do” I said to him. He turned to see all four of his brakes were smoking, big time. We sat there and waited for them to cool down a bit before continuing the last few kilometres down the hill. Lesson learned - use the lower gears on long downhill runs rather than brakes, especially when towing. Watch for signs of brake fade. Nathan’s car was only three weeks old, and I had the pads recently replaced, so it was not due to poor brakes. It’s just this hill ended up being longer and steeper than expected, and I did not adjust to it quickly enough. The second incident was when Jo heard knocks coming from the front right suspension of her car after climbing the steep Billy Goat Bluff track near Dargo. Once we stopped for lunch the front tyre was pulled off to see where the noise was coming from and it was found that the lower shock rubber had worn to the point of allowing excessive movement. If we’d had a replacement, we could have changed it, but we didn’t, so we re-assured Jo that her car would be fine, albeit a bit noisy, and we would see what could be done back at camp. Lesson learned - when you get your shocks replaced, keep the best of the old rubber mounts as spares. They don’t take up much room and are light weight. At camp, after removing the shock, we discovered that the Ford’s lower shock mount rubber also consists of a metal sleeve running up the middle of the rubber. Hmmmm, nothing like that in our spares. Luckily, we’d asked the local publican who in town could help if needed. So off to the local person to see what they could do, and for $9 they sold Jo a couple of rubbers that ‘may’ do. After a bit of work, including burning the old rubber off the sleeve in the camp fire, we fashioned a solution to get the Ford back on the road with a quieter front end. Happy days…. until the keys got locked in the car, but that’s another story!! The third incident happened about half an hour after we checked Jo’s shock on the top of Billy Goat Bluff track. Shortly after leaving the lunch spot, and while trying to avoid a bush fire, my Cruiser developed a rather large squeaking noise coming from the front right corner. It happened when the suspension moved up and down as well as when the steering wheel was turned. Did I say this squeak was loud?? We got someone under the car while we rocked the car to see where it was coming from. We sprayed copious amounts of WD40 on all joints, rubbers, and moving parts, but the sound was so loud that it resonated through various components making it hard to pick the source. With no joy, we decided to carry on as it felt fine to drive, nothing appeared damaged, and with the window up it was harder to hear anyway.

Stuff - It Happens On Trips Lesson learned - always carry a tarp or ground sheet that you can put on the ground to lie on when crawling under the car. It not only keeps the person a lot cleaner (and drier if the ground is wet) but also allows things like spiders to be seen if they crawl towards the person lying down (Fiona discovered this at the time). When dismantling things, it makes it much easier to find that small nut or washer when it falls out of your hand. The next morning at camp we again crawled under the car, and failed to find the noise source. We jacked it up, removed the wheel, but without a load on the wheel it made no noise. We checked all components again, and they seemed fine and tight, so I chose to drive the vehicle with the noise and sort it out back home. Lesson learned - we learned that when you are rocking the car back and forth with the bonnet up, to keep all fingers away from where that bonnet will close. Tom fortunately got most of his fingers out of the way when it slammed shut, but the tip of one finger did get caught and the nail is now looking a bit black.
Shortly after leaving camp we came across a large herd of cows being driven along the track. We stopped to let them get past and with a small break in the mob I attempted to start moving forward towards the next mob. As soon as I moved, the squeak started and all nearby cows turned their head towards me, looking startled. I stopped straight away and learnt another lesson. Lesson learned - when your car makes that much noise, wait till all the cows are past before moving on. The squeak turned out to be a worn lower ball joint. I got them all replaced and it’s back to being quiet again. I will be getting the brakes checked soon to ensure that the discs are okay and that the fluid is still okay. Our experience of these three incidents in less than twenty-four hours shows that anything can happen, at any time, and anywhere. Most things are fixable in one way or another but depending on where you are, it may involve a change of plans, or a willingness to sit and wait while parts are sourced. I learnt this very early on when I first went to Cape York with the club and we ended up spending a whole week in Weipa waiting for parts to be flown in for a couple of vehicles. You just need to accept what has happened and make the most of what’s left. Lesson learned - When you’re with a great bunch of people, then it’s so much easier to get through those unexpected incidents.

Pre-Bash And Beyond Meeting By Jo Quinn A planning meeting at Belanglo State Forest on 29th/30th April occurred for club members attending the Bash and Beyond extended trip in June/July. Many decided to arrive on Friday and make a weekend of it. Despite the location's chequered past, it is a beautiful spot to camp. With a large, open grassy area, pit toilet facilities, and only 5km off the highway, it does have a lot to offer. It's when it gets dark, shadows seem to move between the towering pine trees, and that toilet seems to be just that little too far to walk with a torch beam that only spreads about 10cm in front of you, when you think you hear rustling among the pine needles... The weekend was blessed with great weather. Clear sunny skies and cool evenings spent around the camp fire. For those of us having just got back from the Victorian High Country a few days earlier, the 8 degrees at night felt quite balmy! The purpose of the planning meeting was to go through the details of our upcoming Bash and Beyond trip, which will see 23 club members head to outback NSW and QLD on a 17 -day adventure. The trip includes attending the iconic Big Red Bash concert out at Birdsville; the most remote concert in the world, and then onto camel races at Bedourie, and the chance to explore Diamantina National Park and some of the small country towns of outback QLD before heading home. It was the opportunity for members to discuss vehicle and trailer requirements, items to bring, and any equipment that may need to be purchased or shared amongst the group. We went through the planned itinerary, the route maps, fuel requirements, distances, and refuelling locations. Convoy and travelling procedures were also discussed as we have 11 vehicles, with 10 towing. We also went through all the fun stuff like theme nights, trip reports, pub nights, and day songs. Our "trip shirts" were handed out and I must admit they are awesome looking shirts! Sublimated in design, they are covered with a photo of Big Red taken at sunset by ex-member Ben Fullagar, and have the "BRB" symbolic of The Bash, on the back and our club logo on the front. We are set to be the best dressed group at The Bash! The meeting provided the opportunity to debate stone stompers vs rock tamers, cardboard vs corflute and beer cartons, what meals everyone was thinking of preparing, the importance of chocking up trailers, and the chance to consume the odd beverage or 10 around the camp fire under a clear night sky full of stars. This trip is now full. Bring on The Bash! ď ľ

TRIP PROCEDURES
Equipment All vehicles should be in good mechanical condition and carry the following basic equipment on all club trips: - spare wheel - jack - wheel brace - basic tools - shovel - first aid kit - recovery gear
April - May 2017
Stay in touch On trips, our club uses broadcast channel 15 UHF The alternate channel is 16 UHF
Convoy procedures 1 - Maintain a safe distance from the vehicle ahead, especially when roads are rough or dusty. 2 - Maintain position in convoy except in unusual circumstances. 3 - Wait at intersections to ensure that the vehicle behind you knows which way to go. If radio contact has been made, directions may be given over the CB, to allow the convoy to keep moving. 4 - When arriving at a hard section, eg creek crossing, steep hill, washout etc, wait for the vehicle ahead to clear, or to be called through on the CB. 5 - Stay on the track; don’t stray into the bush! 6 - If you want to leave the convoy, tell the trip leader. Don’t just wander off! 7 - If using the CB, allow time between transmissions for others to call. Keep transmissions short to allow for emergency transmissions. 8 - When there is an emergency call, the trip leader should be the ONLY person to reply. If the trip leader is not contactable, an appointed person will relay the message. Cease all other transmissions until the trip leader advises that the emergency is over. Radio silence may be broken for another emergency. 9 - Only people nominated by the trip leader should help others through obstacles (“Too many cooks …”) 10 - The position of “tail-end Charlie” will be allotted by the trip leader. This person will be required to advise the Trip Leader of various events during the trip, and stay with his/her vehicle and operate the CB should an emergency situation arise. 11 - Take only photos and video; leave only foot prints and tyre tracks.

TRIP REPORTS:
Picnic Day at Wombeyan Caves Wombeyan Caves Meeting point: Pheasants Nest Sunday 23 April 2017 Led by Troy and Sandi Strickland Attendees: Chris and Bernadette Tiller John and Jean Hocking Robert and Sandra Moss Kim Nolan Michael Hamilton Mark and Karolyn Honor (cameo appearance) Report by Michael Hamilton This trip was quite unusual. We didn’t get lost, we didn’t take any wrong turns, and nobody did anything particularly silly.
Sandi picked a perfect day. We met at Pheasants Nest, where everyone resisted the temptation to buy Krispy Kreme doughnuts. Our first stop was the Wollondilly River Station. It looks like it could be a great spot for our Christmas Party this year. There’s plenty of space, and it’s right on the water. The owner must be okay – she was driving around in a Subaru Brumby. We met up with Mark and Karolyn who were travelling back from the Victorian High Country. Mark was as sick as a dog (because he ate the wrong side of a half-and-half pizza the night before), so Karolyn was driving.
… nice to see so many people camping and enjoying the outdoors.
Instead of heading straight to Wombeyan Caves, we took a detour along Langs Road, and came in from the west. Some of us remembered this track from our Yerranderie trips.
At the caves, everyone explored as they wished. Some did the Mares Forest Creek walk, others looked around the beautiful camping area, and one brave soul disappeared underground to tackle the steep ladders and 520 steps of the famous Wollondilly Cave. All that exercise made us pretty hungry. Luckily, there was a good supply of lamingtons, ANZAC cookies, and banana cake to boost our energy. After lunch, we headed through the lovely town of Taralga, and the Swallow Tail Pass track to the freeway. Swallow Tail Pass is an interesting alternative to Wombeyan Caves Road; a bit rougher, but not as scary. Wombeyan Caves is a terrific spot. It was quite busy due to the school holidays, but it was nice to see so many people camping and enjoying the outdoors. The facilities are good, and the cave guides really know their stuff. There’s lots of friendly wildlife, much to the surprise of the overseas visitors who were amazed to see the local kangaroos grazing among the campsites. A big thank you to Sandi and Troy for organising the trip. Everyone had an awesome day!

Led by Craig Fitzpatrick Attendees: Michael and Julie Rush - Mitsubishi Triton Guy and Sue Freeman - Toyota Landcruiser (and brand new off-road caravan direct from QLD) Dave Cook - Subaru Outback Scott Ashurst - Ford Territory Report by Scott Ashurst We departed around 9.30am and headed up Scone Road, without too much traffic but it quickly became apparent that the school holidays were well under way with cities of Tents and Caravans at a number of riverside camping grounds along the way. The road had even been recently graded! Craig really does think of everything. We arrived at Polblue campground around 11.00am. We found a group site without too much trouble; it was good we got there early because the site filled up as the day went on.
It was determined that with a good day’s work already done, and no more exertion required, there was detailed discussion around an appropriate time to commence "fivesies". There was agreement that 5pm is a loose guideline and tended to spoil dinner, so an indeterminate earlier time was allowed and encouraged for the good of all. A gentle afternoon around camp followed incorporating lunch, naps, fivesies and dinner in a steady progression. Dave's pot-bellied stove and a roaring fire kept the crisp night temperatures at bay during dinner. A spectacular night sky and howling dingoes lulled us to sleep.

you some idea of how steep and rugged this country is; we don't often get that perspective from the road. On Sunday, we explored north of the main road, including Gummi Falls, and lovely campsites on upper Manning River, visiting "the Rock" with required photographs. We were going to do a loop but a large tree across the track necessitated a revised route and we found our way back to the campsite without incident by lunchtime. Monday was a leisurely start for the return trip home via Scone, with lunch at Moonan Flat on the way. Thanks, Craig, for a great trip!

Victorian High Country Pineapple Flat camping area, Alpine National Park, Victoria Thursday 13 to Tuesday 18 April 2017 Led by Mark and Karolyn Honor Attendees: Brett and Fiona Hampson, with Chantelle Tom and Cath De Santis David and Karen Horwitz Grant and Allison Lucas, with children Jason and Karen Finlayson Troy and Sandi Strickland Jo and Shahni Quinn Joshua Parkinson Kevin McCormack Kim Nolan David Lang Reports by 1. “First couple of days” - Jo Quinn 2. “Highlands Day Hike, Saturday 15 April” - Troy Strickland
1. “First couple of days ” by Jo Quinn A few of us decided to head down early for the club’s Easter Victorian High Country trip, primarily to get a good spot at Pineapple Flat, our base camp for the long weekend. Prior to the rest of the club arriving Good Friday at lunchtime, those that enjoyed the extra days were Jo, Shahni, Cath, Tom, Jason, Karen, Josh, and Brett, Fiona and Chantelle. Pineapple Flat is in the western region of Victoria’s Alpine National Park, is truly beautiful country and only about 10km from Mt Stirling. Surrounded by towering mountains and a plethora of 4WD tracks winding all through the region, there was ample time to test out the tracks and admire stunning views from towering heights.
… the surrounding bush looked extremely welcoming in those times of need!
Pineapple Flat campground is located on the banks of King River. We were lucky enough to secure a rather large circular area that we could contain as a group until everyone arrived on Friday. The campground is amenity free albeit for a pit toilet. The pit toilet started off okay when there were very few people at the campground, but come Easter Saturday you had to be either very adept at holding your breath or the surrounding bush looked extremely welcoming in those times of need! What started off as a large, secluded campsite apart from 2 other campers, turned into a very popular, packed campground by Good Friday. The main pasttime of all campers seemed to be the novelty of heading down to the creek crossing every time a group of vehicles arrived, to watch the varying techniques of drivers as they negotiated the somewhat dug-out, slippery slope that led to the campground. Beautiful weather with plenty of sunshine during the day lent itself to lazy days of pure relaxing and unwinding. Apart from driving to the top of the mountain once to get phone reception and the odd trip out to fill roof baskets with fire wood, the days were spent listening to the river flow past and enjoying quiet times with good friends.

Victorian High Country 2. “Highlands Day Hike, Saturday 15 April” by Troy Strickland Rolling out of the swag on Saturday morning it was still dark and cold. By the time, we had left the camp it was just starting to become light and the temperature was reading zero. Sandi and I were headed for Upper Howqua campground to start an ambitious walk that Mark had found for us. It took just over an hour to drive the windy dirt Circuit Road and down Bindaree Rd. After getting our gear ready and then finally finding the start of the track, which was a little overgrown, we headed up the goat track pushing our way through the bushes. There were a few times that we felt like the ants from A Bugs Life when we thought we had lost the path, but no, we found Helicopter Spur - our major challenge that we had come to tackle. We climbed up and got to the top, or half way up, and looked at how far we had climbed up from the valley. We pushed on and soon realised we were only just getting started. That was probably half way up the first of 4 or 5 ascents climbing and scrambling over rocky sections. Continuing up, we kept stopping to take in the views back towards Mt Stirling and Mt Buller.
… the trail just went straight off the edge and down the cliff.
Finally, we made it to the top where we passed a nice camping spot at the peak and then followed the ridge trail until we found the main road, Bluff Track, that passes Lovicks Hut. This was not the end of the hill. The road continued up past Picture Point. After a few kilometres, we turned off onto the Australian Alps Walking Track and headed downhill from Mt Marjorie. We could see a slight trail on the mountain in front of us and hoped that it was not where we were headed, but it was. We ended up at the top of the mountain. It was worth it; at 1720m Mt Magdala gave us perfect 360 degree views of the ranges. We spoke to our group at Mt Buller and could hear them on the handheld UHF radios along with some other groups. Then down we went (we were hoping mainly for downhill sections now) as we headed for Howitt Spur. To get there we had to go down, past Hells Window and back up over Mt Howitt. Near the top, we saw some other hikers heading up to the end of the Spur. The area opened to grassland and no trees were on the exposed saddle near the top. I was questioned a few times if I knew where we were supposed to be going as it looked like the trail just went straight off the edge and down the cliff. And it did. It was about 2pm when we started the descent. We still had 9kms to go back down to the car. Some may say going down is the easy bit, but it’s this that hurts your legs the most. We passed a few family groups heading up the hill with full overnight packs. It was great to see some girls and boys heading bush with their parents. We finally got down to a river and back to walking on the flat. With about 4kms to go, we pushed on to try to get to the car before 4pm. Walking down the valley, we were mainly in the shade and it started to get cool. It was probably a good stretch for the legs as neither of us had sore muscles the next day. After 7 creek crossings we finally made it back to the car, and had a quick break before making the hour-long drive back to camp. We made it back before dark. It had been an exhausting but exhilarating day; perfect weather, a shower courtesy of the Hampson’s, and dinner prepared by the Honor's. Sandi is already planning the next expedition, possibly going back to visit Macalister Springs which is about 3km from Mt Howitt.

1. “Saturday” by David Horwitz We met in Lithgow, where Brian and Brett made the decision to change the training venue due to the likelihood of rain. After dropping off Kim’s slide-on camper at Lake Wallace campground where we were camping for the night, we did some Q&A sessions before heading for the tracks. We proceeded down Maiynou Marragu trail (Blackfellows Hand Trail) stopping to look at the cave. The tracks were damp, no dust, but lots of water and fortunately, no thick mud. Lunch was at the Lost City. After lunch, we proceeded further up the tracks where we stopped at Moon Rock to watch other vehicles come up a steep section of the power line track. For these vehicles, it was a … training slow process slipping and sliding on the was in real life steep rocks. A bit of situations mud did not help.
with truly stuck vehicles ...
We left Moon Rock to do live vehicle recovery training. Guy wanted to try out his winch, so on one of the tracks Brian found a good spot to get Guy stuck so that he had to winch himself out. At the same spot, there was an opportunity to try our skills for driving up a wash away. Brian’s Jeep made it due to the Jeep’s large articulation on the front wheels. Brian had earlier removed the pins securing the front stabiliser bar. Paul and Brett each had a go but were stuck and had to be recovered with snatch straps. The recovery training was in real life situations with truly stuck vehicles on a 4WD track and made for a great training experience. Once the tents were set up at camp, we went to ‘The Bottom Hotel’ in Wallerawang for dinner. All up the Saturday was a great day, made even better by the fact that it did not rain.

Lake Wallace and Lithgow 1. “Sunday” by Guy Freeman The "parliament" of drivers and passengers reconvened at the leisurely hour of 10am for Q&A in the campground to go over what was learned on Saturday and what each driver wanted to learn today. After thoroughly grilling the leaders the convoy crept along the highway, because the tyre pressures were still down from yesterday, and into the forest where the going soon became tougher. David, in his Outback, demonstrated his excellent line-picking skills to get his car through some quite gnarly spots.
… an underbody car wash... 100 metres or so along a briskly flowing Cox’s River.
Our first significant point of call was the Mt Walker trig point. We walked the last couple of hundred metres (except for Brett who turned back when he realised he could drone it from the "car park"). Our leaders explained that the point of the weekend's exercise was to experience various conditions that conceivably could be encountered on a 4WD trip rather than driving ridiculously rough stuff for the heck of it. We left this steep and rough section with the philosophy that if there was a magnificent destination beyond something this difficult and if it was too far to walk, then it might be worth trying. Otherwise, leave it for the youngsters with cheap, ultra-high lifted vehicles they are prepared to break for fun. After a nibble and a chat, we set off down the mountain until Brett decided he'd reached a point where the philosophy just mentioned meant backtracking to where we'd parked.
Guy got more opportunities for learning today (this time the car's crawl function) on the hills. At this point, as there was no room to turn around, he found that the crawl even works in reverse uphill. Amazing! Soon after this we pulled up at a serene waterside lunch spot. We were treated to an alternative style of serenity as Mark showed us why he's Australia's No.2 whip cracker. What a champ! The final highlight of the day was what Brett called an under-body car wash... 100 metres or so along a briskly flowing Cox’s River. Michael's front number plate came off in the water; Guy found it but Jeff was the real hero because he retrieved it. Back at the top, the convoy began to part company as Kim, and Guy and Sue headed back to the lake to retrieve their campers. Once again, our leaders had further developed our driving skills and knowledge. Thanks guys!

Mushroom picking in May Hampton State Forest
Sunday 21 May 2017
Led by John and Jean Evans
Attendees: Troy and Sandi Strickland John Hocking
Report by Sandi Strickland
We met at the Millionth Acre picnic grounds on the corner of Jenolan Caves Road and Duckmaloi Road for some freshly baked muffins, hot chocolate, coffee and tea, oh, and the all-important ‘need to know’ tuition on mushroom identification, handling and safety. After discussing how many people have died or become seriously ill eating the wrong mushrooms, we set off with lots of confidence to Hampton State Forest. We were told to bring a hand-held basket or bucket, lined with paper towels, a soft cloth and a small sharp knife, which of course we forgot, but luckily John supplied us with one. It was not long before we were skipping through the forest happily collecting mushroom (no, wait… that’s what we could have looked like had we picked the wrong kind!). Seriously, Target species: Saffron Milk Cups though, we found two excellent spots in which we basically filled our … we were three containers full of the correct kind of mushrooms. It really was lots of fun, skipping locating them, cutting them with the small sharp knife and then wiping them with a cloth as they tend to grow in an almost nest of pine needles. through the
forest happily ...
We headed down a short, but challenging track, to Duckmaloi Reserve for pan-fried fresh mushroom bruschetta, and some other delicious breakfast items around a warm camp fire. John had thought about and brought everything! We had never been there before and so, after eating the yummy bruschetta we went for a walk along the creek and checked it out as a potential campsite. John tried his luck at fishing for the elusive, but tasty, Brook or Brown Trout in the fabled Duckmaloi River but had no luck. We went into Oberon, still full of breakfast, and decided rather than having lunch straight away we would buy a coffee or pie and head to Oberon Dam. We had lunch and walked to the dam wall and then headed off to our final destination.

The potholes were huge and filled with water and so John Hocking fearlessly … we will be led us at this stage so back to have a we could see how deep they were. They were swim in solid on the bottom so it was all good for the summer ... Subies. Arriving at Hyde Park Reserve, we walked down to a lovely swimming hole. This place was another first for us and we will be back to have a swim in summer there! We had some more food, of course; this time home baked fruit cake and jam drops. After saying our goodbyes, we headed home in our separate ways. It was a wonderful day, and John, Troy and I would like to thank John Evans very much for running such a delightful and delicious day! PS: John H’s son was in Melbourne at the markets and saw the mushrooms we were picking for $40 a kilo! We had to throw the last of ours out as they did not travel all that well.

4WD DELEGATES
We have been your Club Delegates to Four Wheel Drive NSW & ACT 8 months now, less then 2 months before the end of our term – that was a quick year, well I guess any year that is only 10 months long will be quicker than a normal year. Only 3 meetings recently and I have started to enjoy them as I now know enough to ask logical and challenging questions. The Association is doing a great job for our club in many areas but improvements can be made. I can now see the value of our club’s affiliation with the Association and believe that we should remain a member. May Quarterly Meeting – 20 May 2017 at Bathurst David attended this meeting and drove a new Mt Panorama lap record in reverse 6min 50.90sec – while driving clockwise was a little slower - 6min 57.05sec. No, not reverse gear but in forward gear the reverse way (anti-clockwise) around the track, in the Blue Forester with a maximum of 60kph as the police had the radar out checking our speed. At this meeting, there was still no agenda nor written reports but they have been promised for next time. We were given free morning tea and a small lunch. • Reporting trips to NPWS & State Forests – electronic forms available on Association website. It is important that we start to use these forms so that Continued trips and level of usage is recorded. Currently, Government believe that walkers and mountain bike riders are the highest users of Parks and Forests because they report. The higher the usage, the greater say groups are given, and more consultation. This can lead to areas being kept open or access given to closed and controlled areas. •
Track Classification – Abercrombie area pilot – now only 1/3 complete, more work soon.
•
Bridle Track (Bathurst) closed to through traffic and the alternative to Hill End, Root Hog fire trail, is now open and some is on private property so stay on track, remove rubbish etc.
•
Association can assist with Classic Car Club Registration for 30-year-old plus vehicles that are driven using a log book up to 60 days per year. Classic Car registration has huge savings on registration and insurance. Details on RMS and ACMC Websites.
Quarterly meetings Dates for the other two quarterly meetings in 2017 are August 19 and November 18 together with AGM; both at venues TBA. The August Association meeting will have reports from Secretary, Treasurer, urgent business and then an Open Forum – Topic: Relevance of Association in all areas of society Dates for your 2017 diary and early advice for Easter 2018 •
