RU’A AL HARAM CONCEPT MASTERPLAN COMPETITION
Al-Masjid Al-Haram, and the Kaa’ba that its encompasses is not merely the place of pilgrimage for the Hajj and Umrah, it is the story of the city of Makkah, of the Hejazi region of Saudi Arabia and of Ummat Al-Islam. It is the physical embodiment and metaphoric journey through Struggle, Faith, Hope and Devotion, it is a story of People and of a Place. In the span of one hundred years, Makkah has evolved from a small town contained within a valley, with 100,000 residents and 200,000 pilgrims, to a city of 2 million people, and over 10 million pilgrims (over 2.5 million for Hajj and over 6.5 million for Umrah). The influx of pilgrims during the Hajj season in the beginning of the century is equivalent to the flow that the city receives on a weekly basis. For many devout muslims the Kabbah pilgrimage is a lifelong dream: dream of fulfilling a religious duty whilst visiting the holiest place on earth. To visit the land where the Prophet Mohammed (PBUOH) was born and first received his calling to devote the rest of his life to preach the word of Allah. The spiritual connection to breath the air and walk the land aprofound and greatest aspiration. Our design approach seeks to provide an urban solution where the individual spiritual solace is placed at the core and the crowds’ communal aspirations are catered for, by a safe and comfortable means. Dense urban development requires open spaces with a well-defined program, to create culturally engaging, healthy and flourishing public realm. Great squares and streets make for a better quality of life and user experience. A network of well-designed and cared-for open spaces adds to the character of places where people want to live, work and visit. •Reinforce local identity and civic pride •Enhance the physical character of an area, •Shape existing and future development •Improve physical and social inclusion, •Recreation, walking and cycling, and enhance biodiversity •Boost the economic potential of Pilgrimage and tourism, •Provide leisure and cultural activities

GAMUDA GARDENS PRE-CONCEPT MASTERPLAN BID
Sitting amidst dense green undulating terrain, Gamuda gardens retail park offers a unique picturesque setting for a mixed-use development on the outskirts of the city. A place which promotes integrated living where both green and built environment can thrive in harmony. Visible from surrounding highways which run parallel on the two sides, the site presents imposing views of a free flowing architecture defended by high-rise towers. The scenic beauty of dense vegetation can be enjoyed from many points in the site which sits on a higher plane than its surroundings. The three main zones, namely the Retail Park, The Office quarter and the Residential neighborhood have been clearly defined to create a legible and well defined areas. Whilst lateral permeability and flow of pedestrian movement is encouraged the vehicular traffic will be kept to the edges of the site to encourage safe and car-free neighborhoods. The Retail park is configured in a circuit to create an uninterrupted and continuous retail promenade. By avoiding dead-ends, the visitor will be able to enjoy all parts of the development at leisure, by encountering a number of varied and exciting retail-tainment offers. Internal green pockets are preserved as much as possible by proposing permeable and porous planning. The built form and materials will allow the greens to breathe and grow organically. The vision for this project is a direct derivative of its strategic location and terrain. Planning is done in such a way that contours are respected and worked with. Restricting vehicular circulation around the site, there will be seamless pedestrian circulation throughout the site and will boast a connectivity pedestrian bridge to the Luge Park on the southern end. 20 acres of land will be developed to be an anchor point for residents of this area to come and enjoy as an alternative destination for family leisure activities.
