World Environment Day – June 5th

World Environment Day ('WED') is celebrated every year on 5 June to raise global awareness of the need to take positive environmental action. It is run by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). It was the day that United Nations Conference on the Human Environment began. The United Nations Conference on the Human Environment was from 5–16 June 1972. It was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1972. The first World Environment Day was in 1973. World Environment Day is hosted every year by a different city with a different theme and is commemorated with an international exposition in the week of 5 June. World Environment Day is in spring in the Northern Hemisphere and fall in the Southern Hemisphere. The theme for World Environment Day of 2013 is “Think.Eat.Save ”. The campaign addresses the huge annual wastage and losses in food, which, if conserved, would release a large quantity of food as well as reduce the overall carbon footprint. The campaign aims to bring about awareness in countries with lifestyles resulting in food wastage. It also aims to empower people to make informed choices about the food they eat so as to reduce the overall ecological impact due to the worldwide production of food items. World Environment Day (WED) is observed on June 5 every year to promote awareness on the importance of preserving our biodiversity, the need to identify problems related to the environment and ways to take corrective action. World Environment Day has received tremendous support from the public, non-profit organizations and governments around the world. Various awareness campaigns - beach clean-ups, concerts, exhibits, film festivals, community events and much more - are organized to spread the message, which is to improve the quality of life of all living beings on this planet without harming

nature. All the activities of World Environment Day are carried out to spread eco-awareness and increase green footprint. Each year, World Environment Day is hosted in a different city with a different theme for one week that kicks off on June 5. A World Environment Day theme is selected along with an Environment Day slogan, which aims to emphasize the importance of protecting our planet and promote an understanding that they each individually can play a significant and effective role in tackling environmental issues.

Environment Awareness Programme Every year people around the globe are celebrating World Environment Day on 5th of June since 1972, while our Group has been planting saplings surrounding our Community. We have planted more than 100 saplings these past years but what made us think is we are alone planting trees since two decades but no one is taking such measures in our locality, so we thought of creating awareness around us and thus leads to plant more saplings in & around our community. For making the program a mass one, we need to provide more materials like pamphlets, charts, posters, banners, etc., on environment. So we thought of getting help from an organization. Our Rovers contacted the leading Environmental Organizations around the city and got connected with the largest environmental research center in the state (i.e) the C. P. Ramaswamy Environment Education Centre. They came to help us and we brought the required materials to exhibit. We planned to exhibit the materials at Villivakkam railway station where thousands of people pass through the station every hour. Our

group officials got the permission from the Station master to exhibit the charts, posters, etc. We exhibited the materials in an organized manner without giving any disturbance to the public passengers in the station. The given materials were on the topic of Bio-diversity and Climate Change. Every chart gave the message of the causes and the effects of Climate Change and Bio-diversity. Around thousands of people got awaked of the World Environment Day and the awareness of the programme and many took the pledge that, they will try to plant some saplings.

Bio-diversity What is biodiversity? Biodiversity, or biological diversity, is the immense variety and richness of life on Earth.

Biodiversity includes: ď ś The diversity of genes within all living organisms. ď ś The diversity of species. For example, Morel, corn, rainbow trout, praying mantis and humans are different species. ď ś The diversity of ecosystems (coral reefs, prairies, forests, wetlands, etc.).

Why is biodiversity important? Species and ecosystems provide essential goods and services upon which human well-being depends. They support our health, our environment and our economies.

Why are people concerned about the loss of biodiversity? Our growing population and increasing consumption of natural resources places enormous stresses on natural ecosystems and species within them. Loss of and damage to habitats, overharvesting, introduction of non-native species to new areas, and climate change are major causes of species extinction and endangerment. Scientists estimate that species extinctions are occurring 100 to 1000 times faster than without human influence. Without a change in our actions half of the world's species may be lost by 2100.

How is science helping to conserve biodiversity? Although the biodiversity crisis is real, devastation is not inevitable. By acting quickly and wisely we can stem the loss of biodiversity. Scientists, policy makers and the public are starting to work together to develop sustainable ways of living that can benefit from biodiversity and also conserve it for the future.

CLIMATE CHANGE What is Climate Change? Long term changes in the weather, over the course of decades, affecting temperature, rainfall, cloudiness, etc.

What causes Climate Change? Natural patterns and cycles. Human activities that add greenhouse gases most importantly Carbon-di-oxide to the atmosphere. The increase in earth’s average temperature due to human activities is called Global Warming.

How does Climate Change affect Pacific islands? Sea level rise. Coastal flooding. Saltwater intrusion into groundwater. More frequent bad weather events. Potential drought as rainfall pattern changes.
