WOMEN’S REPORT
What a season! 2020 has been a short season, in a very long year. For us, it started way back in November, and it started just like any other year. But 2020 has been anything but any other year. A year of uncertainty, of change, and of patience. We ran the season with no committee, no fundraising, no sponsors, and no funding…but we ran it with a lot of love, and a lot of resilience.

While not a successful season result-wise, the endeavour of the Subiaco Rogers Cup squad this year could not be faulted. From their early dedication to preseason and endeavour during a period of uncertainty to complete the required individual and small-group fitness sessions, to their enthusiasm once a season was announced, the players showed resilience and tenacity through adversity. Growth was certainly the theme of 2020 with the highlight being watching each individual grow in confidence, skill and knowledge of the game as well as showing character growth as they exhibited grace, humility and positivity in defeat throughout a shortened season. Recognition of the junior pathway through Warwick Greenwood, Kingsley, Kingsway, Whitfords and North Beach players making the transition to Subiaco Rogers Cup showed the growth in female football within the district, and we look forward to welcoming more new faces from junior clubs in 2021. Furthermore, we can celebrate the graduation of a number of players to the senior squad with the knowledge that they will be important contributors to the future success of Subiaco Women’s. Special mention must go to co-captains Kato Bosmans, Maggie MacLachlan and Charlie Thomas who not only contributed to the Rogers Cup squad but all made their senior debuts this year, as well as emerging leaders Eloise Muller and Jess Knight who lead by example to ensure the playing group remained focused and supported.

RESERVES
The 2020 Reserves season was a positive one, with many highlights along the way. Preseason was uncertain at times, but the players worked hard throughout that period, whether it was together during early preseason, or when they had to train by themselves or in small groups away from the club due to the global pandemic. We announced a new leadership group for the 2020 season with Corina Lind and Amy Hunt taking over as Co Captain’s. They were well supported by Vice Captain’s Sarah Cosh and Jasmine King. The season itself had its ups and downs. The first two games of the season were losses to the eventual Grand Finalist’s in Claremont and East Fremantle, however from there the Reserves went on to win their last 4 from 5 games. A gritty win against Swan Districts, then convincing wins over South Fremantle, where the standard of footy produced was incredibly high. Along with outstanding team footy there were outstanding individual efforts with Amy Hunt who was the eventual competitions leading goal scorer kicking a bag of 8 out at Fremantle Oval. Kia Buckley had 3 goals by quarter time on the same day. The final win of the season came against West Perth out at Joondalup. It was a stirring come from behind win, eventually knocking them over by a point in the final minute of the game. This secured the Reserves spot in the finals for the first time in a number of years. Whilst the final didn’t go to plan, and a disappointing result to end the season, the season as a whole was a big step forward for the Reserves group. We had a number of 2019 youth girls play senior footy for the first time and impacted the group immediately. Hannah Young came in and took over the number 1 ruck spot, Kia Buckley turned games on their head with her head over the ball inspiring footy and Sarah Walters who ran all day for us on the wing and won herself the Reserves Fairest & Best, to name a few. New players came in and really embraced our club culture and were great additions both on and off the field. Competition for spots this season was the highest it has ever been at the club, which meant tough decisions for coaches, but a great position for us as a club. All of this makes 2021 look exciting, as the Reserves will look to take another step forward and bring more consistency to the high level they proved they are more than capable of.

WAFLW LEAGUE
The League team had a very successful season albeit our disappointing grand final loss. This season looked very different with a new system, less rounds and many AFLW players unavailable due to various reasons. The girls had a long and successful preseason thanks to the hard work of both the Rogers cup and Reserves coaches who were guided and assisted by
our strength and conditioning coach Tami Jakobsen, along with other important people involved within the club. Club captain Hayley Miller again lead by example, and was well supported by Vice Captain Tiah Haynes, and leaders Tarni Golisano, Ellie Blackmore, and Claire Ortlepp. The players all gelled well and hit the ground running. We only lost one game during the season, and had an excellent win against Peel Thunder in the first semi final to book a week off and a spot in the Grand Final. Unfortunately the players didn’t play their best game and were no match for the young Peel Thunder team. Hopefully the girls will learn from the game and come back hungrier to go one better next year. We have a strong women’s club through all 3 grades, which is testament to our excellent coaches and support staff who all work hard with the limited support we receive. It will be very exciting to see all players continue to develop and fulfil their potential.

LEAGUE HEAD COACH
Overall, it has been an outstanding season, measured not in wins and losses, but far more importantly in growth and development, as players and as people. We had our hurdles, as injuries took their toll, robbing so many of our talented players of their time to shine. We will now look forward to next year, to pick up where we all left off and know everyone will come back stronger and hungrier than ever.
