Student Prospectus 03

About SUBSEC Sunyani Business Senior High School is a private, nongovernment-assisted SHS, fully accredited by the Ghana Education Service (GES) and West African Examinations Council (WAEC). We also run additional courses such as National Vocational Training Institute (NVTI) Secretarial courses (see courses section on page 8). SUBSEC also coeducational, accepting both boys and girls, and runs a day and boarding programme (see pages 12 and 13).

Background Sunyani Business Senior High School, originally known as Sunyani Business College - SUBUSCO, was established through the proprietorship of Mr. E. P. Asare on the 10th of September, 1982. With its unique blend of academic and vocational programmes, SUBUSCO grew rapidly, serving the Brong Ahafo, Western and Northern regions of Ghana and beyond, including neighbouring countries.

In 1990, the government introduced the educational reform (SSS programme) to replace the GCE system and this school became the first private institution in the region to be approved by the GES to run the SSS programme. SUBUSCO was then renamed Sunyani Business Secondary School (SUBSEC). However, as widely known, the national SSS programme took off with a number of limitations and non-assisted schools were most affected with most collapsing by the day, mainly due to their exclusion from vital aspects of the programme and policies. SUBSEC was among the few to survive, thanks to its diverse programmes, innovation, effective management and divine intervention. Thankfully, the hard work and consistency has yielded to accelerated growth since the turn of the century. Since 2003, SUBSEC in partnership with PANEST [Pro-Action Network in Education and Skill Training] introduced youth development programmes through sports, music and social education.

Motto The beginning of wisdom

Vision The school envisages becoming one of the best coeducational High school in the Sunyani municipality in particular and the Brong Ahafo region. 04 Sunyani Business Senior High School

Achievements In light of the mission and set goals, a lot has been achieved as a youth development oriented institution. Our school is known for the inclusion, universal education and equal opportunity policies. This is why our programmes are and continue to be diversified to provide for a wider range and levels of abilities. The school’s year-on-year growth rate currently averages at about fifteen percent.

A significant number of students, after their studies at SUBUSCO/SUBSEC have got the chance to further their education at the universities, polytechnics, teacher training colleges and other institutions. A recognisable proportion also gains direct employment in the public and private sector courtesy of our NVTI, ICT programmes - not forgetting those who apply their skills in managing family businesses or setting up their own In fact, one would be sure to find a former student in almost every major part of the Brong Ahafo, and nationwide especially in the Western, Ashanti, Northern, Upper regions. Also some leavers who get the chance to travel abroad find their course very useful as reference requests towards employment or further education, are common at our office. Due to our consistency, SUBSEC is now a WAEC approved examinations centre since 2006. This makes us the first privately managed school, once again, to achieve this in the Brong Ahafo Region. Since 2003, SUBSEC, in partnership with Panest, a local non-governmental organization, began the Panest Sports Academy to add football and athletics in our youth development programme. Hundreds of young people have benefited or continue to benefit from the project. This has not only withdrawn most of them from the streets and homes back into structured programmes but has also rekindled their interest in formal education which has been integrated into the sports development project. Some trainees have already and continue to progress into higher level clubs and national teams. It will require another booklet to list all known specific achievements. But to conclude, the growth and development means there are more greater achievements to come and by the grace of God, the sky is the limit.
