GET TO KNOW
TOM CONLEY
Whaling significance described at upcoming event By FRANK VAISVILAS fvaisvilas@shawmedia.com
GENEVA — This historical significance of whaling in America will be discussed Tuesday at the Geneva History Center. The event is part of the history center’s “Brown Bag Lunch” series, which takes place monthly. The cost is $5 for adults and $3 for GHC members and students. Tom Conley will present the discussion on whaling, and he recently sat down with the Republican to talk about the upcoming event. Why is whaling history important to us? It’s history not generally taught in schools, but it is a significant part of the history of this country. It employed about 70,000 people in the late 1840s, the peak of the whaling industry, when 735 Yankee whalers were out. Whale byproducts, including whale oil and bone, created vast fortunes for ship owners and investors. New Bedford, Mass., became one of the wealthiest cities in the country and was known as the “city that lit the world” because whale oil was considered the very best source of illumination at the time.
How did you become interested in this topic? My initial interest was in scrimshaw, a byproduct of the whale fishery. Sailors on long whaling voyages would fill their leisure hours creating decorative and practical items from whale bone and teeth. In 1995, my wife and I acquired a piece of scrimshaw we thought was authentic but turned out to be fake. Our initial research led us in 1996 to the Kendall Whaling Museum in Sharon, Mass. (It merged with the New Bedford [Massachusetts] Whaling Museum in 2001.) We’ve been members since 1996 and we attend symposiums annually.
STREET TALK What are you looking forward to in 2013?
How will you discuss whaling? I’ll begin by describing why we whaled, the whale ship, the whale boat and the implements used in capturing the whale. I’ll talk about the importance of the industry to our country. I’ll talk about the sailors’ art of scrimshaw and the New Bedford and the Nantucket whaling museums, repositories of the finest collections of scrimshaw in the world. And I’ll talk about Captain Lemuel Milk Potter and his firsthand account of whaling in the mid-19th century. How did you become a presenter of this topic at the history center? Neighborhood friends told us of visiting the GHC and meeting a volunteer whose great, great-grandfather had been a whaling captain. We contacted that volunteer, Mr. Lynn Landberg. We were thrilled when Lynn invited us to his home to see, among other things, journals kept by his great, great-grandfather, Captain Lemuel Milk Potter, which chronicled two whaling voyages. It is because of Mr. Landberg’s generosity that we happily offered to speak at the GHC on the subject of whaling and scrimshaw and, of course, Captain Potter. What is your background? I’m a retired United Airlines captain, having flown for 34 years. I’m also a fifth generation Conley in Huntley. My wife and I live in the 1856 home of our town’s founder, Thomas Stillwell Huntley. I have a keen interest in history and preservation, have restored five historic homes in Huntley, was a historic preservation commissioner and am a member of the Huntley Historical Society. Our involvement with the Kendall and New Bedford whaling museums has resulted in enriching travel to other whaling countries, including Australia, Portugal, the Azorean Islands and England.

Svevo said children and young people are exposed to a lot of violence in this country through movies, books and video games. “We also help to teach children to have a moral compass,” Svevo said. “It seems simplistic, but do parents really know how? Do we really implement lessons during everyday tasks, such as washing dishes or cleaning the garage? ... Our focus on empathy is known as a vaccine against violence.” Svevo’s teaming up with TriCity Family Services by having Derek Peterson from Changing Children’s Worlds Foundation give a presentation to school teachers and support personnel from the St. Charles, Geneva, Batavia, Burlington and Kaneland school districts during a “Round Table” discussion next week. exploring ways to prevent tragedies like the one in Connecticut and how to be prepared. “When (the shooting) happened, I reached out [to] student support services (personnel) to offer our assistance with
counseling or being available in schools to address reactions to the shooting,” Clark said. Both Clark and Svevo feel the services offered by their organizations could help
prevent school shooting tragedies in the future. Clark is currently going through the International Child Development Program provided by Changing Children’s World Foundation. “What I’ve been particularly impressed with is its focus on the attachment between the caregiver and the child, the focus on understanding the child’s feelings and teaching children through everyday discussions,” Clark said. She said the program, which includes attending workshops at the Changing Children’s Worlds Foundation office in Geneva, is very interactive. Svevo said she learned about the International Child Development Program while working with UNICEF in Colombia. She said the program has been introduced in 38 countries and she was the first one to bring it to the United States. “I think it’s going to really be a benefit to what we have in the U.S. already,” Clark said. “It’s research-based and it’s proven to be helpful in many different cultures.”

Structure of style Andrea Reynders sculpts career in fashion design A
fter Andrea Reynders of St. Charles took early retirement from chairing the department of fashion design at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, she found the time to build a clothing line, now carried exclusively by Sandra Webster in Geneva. Her creative career extends from being a visiting artist at the Royal College of Art in London to consulting with art and design schools across the country on developing new fashion studies programs. She and her architect husband, Hennie Reynders, co-teach a design course annually at the SAIC, and have both been involved with the St. Charles Arts Council, including plans for a fashion-themed “neXt gallery” pop-up exhibition this year.

What does your line focus on? I’m producing … one-of-a-kind or small edition clothing. I have been designing my whole adult life. You hardly sound retired. People say retire. I say rewire. If you’re a creative person, it never leaves you. It’s not something you leave at the office and lock the door. What will people find at Sandra Webster? A fine line of coats. I love to work with natural fabrics. They’ll be looking at a lot of natural woolens at the moment. I also love the idea of repurposing woolens and cashmere. … I take really good woolen blankets, wash them, soften them, clean them up and make them beautiful and give them a whole new use and life again. I hunt around for … really good cashmere sweaters. I will launder them and take them apart and recut them and put them into new designs. I truly believe if you have a (well) produced garment and it’s made out of a very good fabric, you could have that garment for many, many years — if it has a good sense of design to it. It’s all about style. I’m not a a trend designer. I’m (aware) of what’s in fashion in the moment, (but) I tend to design something simple and architectural in shape (and) ways of manipulating the garment itself.
Find her clothing line What: Women’s garments from the Andrea Reynders label are carried at Sandra Webster. Reynders also designs shirts and custom items for men Where: Sandra Webster, 209 W. State St., Geneva, 630-208-9434 Contact: www.andreareynders.com, www.sandrawebster.com
Share an example. (My) flip coat … is a two-way coat made in a hightech fiber, a well-made synthetic. You can fold them up into an envelope size. There are two ways of wearing them: One way is a shorter coat (with) two deep pockets and a very full collar that you can make a hood. If you take that coat and turn it upside down, it becomes a longer coat. It’s a trick in design. It still has pockets that are usable. You create garments conducive for travelers. I like to eliminate carrying handbags or purses. I like to build in a lot of pockets. (And) I like to hide pockets in places one wouldn’t expect to look for them, (where) you can keep valuables, a passport, extra money. (I
pick) fabrics that are … wash and wear, and pack up really small.
You’ve been sharing fashion advice with the St. Charles Singers ensemble. I’ve done a lot of costume (work) in my career … for film and theater and advertising. I’m very aware of people’s reaction to what you’re looking at. I’m very interested in all aspects of design and living, and how we can make our lives beautiful, but functional at the same time, so it’s a pleasure to be alive. — RENEE TOMELL

Geneva rebounds at tournament By JASON ROSSI jrossi@shawmedia.com
After two tough losses to start the East Aurora Holiday Tournament — to unbeaten tourney champ Neuqua Valley and defending Class 3A champ Peoria Central — the Geneva’s boys basketball team rebounded with wins over Aurora Central Catholic and East Aurora in the fifth-place game. The Vikings (13-3) let a late lead slip away against Peoria, and they made sure there was no similar outcome Dec. 28 against Aurora Central Catholic in the third and final game of pool play at East Aurora. Geneva was up 35-27 at halftime, but that lead swelled to 57-39 entering the fourth quarter as the Vikings put the Peoria game out of mind in a big way. “Unfortunately for ACC, they were just the next people on the schedule, and they’re the ones who had to pay for it,” Ralston said. “I said if you’re frustrated, let’s take it out on our next opponent, and that was them.” Three players reached double figures in scoring, with Connor Chapman scoring a game-high 27 points on 10-of-13 shooting. He had 10 in the third quarter. Nate Navigato tallied 17 and sharp-shooting Dan Trimble finished with 16, including four three-pointers. Geneva kept the roll going in the tourney finale with the same trio doing the most damage. Down 54-53 with a little over a minute to play, but Chapman came up clutch in the late stages of the game. He made a layup with 35 seconds left. And when East Aurora missed a layup at the other end, Chapman grabbed the rebound and was fouled. He sank two free throws with 11 seconds left to secure the Vikings’ 57-54 win over the Tomcats. Against East Aurora, Navigato, an all-tournament selection, tallied 22 points and grabbed eight rebounds. Chapman finished with 16 and Trimble tallied 10. —Jay Schwab contributed to this report

It’s ice outside
High school hockey teams ‘have a blast’ playing games on outdoor ice rinks
By DAN SANTAROMITA dsantaromita@shawmedia.com
Many hockey players get nostalgic about playing outside, whether it’s on a manicured rink or a frozen pond. The recent popularity of the NHL’s Winter Classic has given extra attention to the idea of playing outdoors and more area high school teams are jumping on the bandwagon. “It’s something every team should do,” said Glenbard coach Jason Hawkins. “We obviously picked it up from the NHL. We stole their idea and ran with it.” The Illinois High School Hockey League West Division, which features area teams Bartlett Wheaton West, Hinsdale Central, South Hockey and York, even took the name and Jan. 1 date from the NHL. “We’ve got what we call our Winter Classic games,” West commissioner Jim McKeague said. “We play at the Elmhurst YMCA for the varsity games and we play at the outdoor rink at Evergreen Park for the JV. There’s a total of eight games this year. It started out as two. They’ve been very successful.” For the third consecutive year, the Glenbard hockey club will play an outdoor game against PREP at the Watts Ice Center in Glencoe. This season’s matchup was set for Jan. 5. “The kids have a blast with it,” Hawkins said. “They put on the eye black even though we play our game at night. It’s a really great experience and we’ve had a lot of success with it.” Hawkins said that it usually takes the two teams a little bit to get acclimated to the new environment but after that, it is

business as usual. “The first period, the teams are feeling it out, getting used to it,” he said. “But once they get comfortable, it gets really competitive. Both teams really want to win it.” Hinsdale Central has already played two outdoor games this season, one in Cicero and one in Elmhurst. The Red Devils faced Lyons Township in one of those matchups with Chicago Blackhawks coach Joel Quenneville dropping the puck. “It brings you back to old-style, oldschool hockey,” said Hinsdale Central coach Mike Rohdenburg. “Everybody really enjoyed it. It is different and a different kind of environment but I liked it a lot.” “Hockey players just love playing outdoors or out on the pond,” LT coach Ricky Reznick said. “You’re playing in a different setting, you’re outside, you’re playing in a rink you’re not used to. It’s just a good night of hockey for both clubs participating in it.” While most players would enjoy an outdoor game, it’s not something that every program is doing yet. AWF coach Marc Pinto is in his first year with the team and hasn’t entertained the

thought of playing outside. Pinto admitted the ice conditions aren’t always the best outside and can slow down the play, however, he has fond memories of playing outside. “I grew up playing at the Elmhurst Y,” Pinto said. “Every now and then we’d skate with a bunch of guys." The Elmhurst YMCA is one of a few outdoor options available in the area along with the Evergreen Park Ice Rink and the Community Ice Rink in Cicero. Scott Schmid also contributed to the report.
Change brings co-op hockey teammates closer By DAN SANTAROMITA dsantaromita@shawmedia.com
A number of high school sports are forced to utilize co-op teams to make numbers for a full team. Hockey has one of the more complicated coop set ups because there isn’t as much organization as there is with the Illinois High School Association for other sports. Last year the Amateur Hockey Association of Illinois decided to reorganize its co-op teams to group teams within districts and limit travel times for some of the players as much as possible. One of the worst travel set ups involved players from Montini, which played on the same team with players from Andrew in Tinley Park. Now, the Bronco hockey players are grouped with Addison Trail, Willowbrook and Fenton in a more local set up. “We looked at the high schools that made sense playing together,” said Illinois High School Hockey League West Division Commissioner Jim McKeague. The Fox Valley Hawks fall into that category — players attend Batavia, Geneva, St. Charles East and St. Charles North (a handful of players, from Oswego and Aurora Christian and Kaneland are grandfathered in). There have been some roadbumps as the team meshes together, but that process should be easier in the future. “This is my third year in a row running a combination team,” said Hawks head coach Jim Quinn, who coached a St. Charles East-St. Charles North-Hampshire-Burlington Central team last season and an East-North co-op the year before. “It makes it harder to mesh as a team, but it seems to be coming together. It’s working out now, and we have a good nucleus that should be back with us next year.” The Glenbard Hockey Club got an addition this year as Glenbard East joined the group which already included Glenbard North, Glenbard South and Glenbard West. “They wanted to see more long-term solutions,” said Glenbard coach Jason Hawkins. “In the past, it was a lot more year to year. They wanted to make it more geographical-based. Solidifying the co-ops should help teams have long-term success. “And for us, it is a good thing for the players to be all together as a district.” Things are still a bit murky for the South Hockey Club, which includes players from Hinsdale South (seven) and Downers Grove South (five). Downers Grove North, which used to co-op with Lemont and Lockport, has three players on the varsity team, while there are a few Lemont and Lockport students who still play for the South Hockey JV team. The new redistricting rules are more geographically friendly, which is both a positive and negative for South Hockey. “I have football players from all three schools,” head coach Mike Dorich said. “In every other sport it’s a big rivalry for those schools and now they’re trying to form a team together. It’s hard to change that mentality.”
