DOWNERS GROVE — In most sports, 3 1/2 minutes is nothing. Entire uneventful sequences can pass by in that span in football or basketball, not even to mention in timeless baseball. But for Downers Grove’s synchronized skating teams, 3 1/2 minutes is all they get. Watching the Dazzlers at work — skating in unison with effortless smiles — belies the years of preparation and dedication that goes into the short routine. “It’s the complete epitome of a team sport,” said Katie Czech, 18, of Lisle, a high school senior on the team in her final year. “You’re only as strong as your weakest skater.” But that pressure has made the team stronger, Czech said. The program draws skaters from all over the western suburbs, including Clarendon Hills, Woodridge and Lemont, and the girls show up to work hard. Then there’s an intermediate team for girls between ages 12 and 18 and the open juveniles, who compete in 2 1/2-minute sequences, and pre-juveniles, who compete in two minutes. There are 19 girls on the intermediate team, most of whom have been skating in the program for years. “Most of them have grown up with us,” Buirge said. Their routines consist of synchronized formations — lines, wheels and intersections — and step movements. Each team has one routine from the beginning to the end of the season, though the coaches might make slight adjustments if there is something the girls can do better or there is an element consistently not winning favor with judges. During a competition, the teams are judged by two panels. One looks at the technical aspects — grading on the difficulty of the team’s routine. Another panel reviews the execution, taking into account the speed, unison, clarity of the footwork and other factors. For instance, if they spot more than three girls putting their foot down at the wrong time during a step sequence, the entire team loses points, Buirge said. “You have to work together and cooperate and solve problems,” Czech added. “That really forms close bonds.”

Local couple celebrates first New Year’s baby at Adventist Hinsdale Hospital SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA

HINSDALE — Adventist Hinsdale Hospital welcomed its first baby of 2013 on New Year’s Day. A girl, Isabella, was born to Snezhana and Igor Kalinin of Riverside. Isabella was born at 12:50 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2013. Isabella weighed 7 pounds, 7 ounces and is 20 inches long. Though her due date was Jan. 7, Snezhana began having contractions on New Year’s Eve, and the family arrived at the hospital around 10 p.m. to give birth a few short hours later. The couple also has another daughter, Ella Trinity, 3. Isabella was delivered by Dr. Leslie Spencer.

HINSDALE — Hinsdale United Methodist Church will offer “College Conversations: Straight Talk and Wise Advice” on Tuesday night for high school students and their parents. Join current college students to hear about their experiences, dispel myths and calm families down in regards to the stress they feel when they face college decisions. Panelists include Bill Sharp, a sophomore at Illinois State University; Evan Roglich, a sophomore at Cornell University; and Lauren West, a sophomore at Loyola University. OAK BROOK — The Oak Brook Park District is once again inviting aspiring young artists to design the cover of its Summer Camp & Aquatics Guide. The winning submission will be published on the front of the 2013 Camp & Aquatics Guide and the artist will win an Aquatic Splash Party for 20 guests at the Oak Brook Park District Family Aquatic Center. Willowbrook man charged with child porn WILLOWBROOK — Carol Stream police detectives concluded a series of child pornography investigations on Dec. 28 with the arrest of 33-year-old Willowbrook resident Andrew P. Quinn. Quinn was charged with two counts of aggravated possession of child pornography — a Class X felony — and five counts of aggravated possession of child pornography, which are Class 2 felonies. The arrest came after Carol Stream detectives and other members of the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force executed a search warrant on Nov. 13 for Quinn’s home on Birnam Trail in unincorporated Willowbrook. He was taken into custody after a warrant was issued for his arrest. Quinn was issued a January court date after posting the required bond and was released from custody. Quinn’s arrest was part of three separate child pornography investigations that were conducted since September by Carol Stream police. Carol Stream detectives also recently executed search warrants in Addison and Darien. There’s still an outstanding warrant in one case. Meanwhile, on Dec. 13, Carol Stream detectives concluded an investigation with the arrest of Patrick E. Riley of the 300 block of Wrightwood Avenue in Addison. He was charged with three felony counts of possession of child pornography. The investigations were concluded with the DuPage County Sheriff’s Office.

Township government here to serve needs of residents

Board president to run for re-election

I recently filed for re-election to the Community High School District 99 Board of Education. I am running for re-election because I believe strong, locally controlled public schools are a vital cornerstone of our community. I believe I have provided calm, steady leadership while promoting the idea that all District 99 constituencies deserve to have their voices heard. I also understand and support the distinction between an elected school board, which establishes the overall direction for the district, and our professional educators, who implement the district’s mission on a day-today basis. Finally, I am guided by the belief that although District 99’s two schools serve a number of municipalities, we are all members of one community. District 99 has been a strong and successful district for many years. However, the last two years have seen an exceptional list of accomplishments that will benefit our entire community well into the future. ■ Quietly and with minimal controversy, we reached agreement on a teachers contract that is frugal and yet fair to both the taxpayers and our faculty; ■ The overall costs of administration remain admirably low, both in comparison with other districts and in comparison with amounts spent on student instruction; SeeLETTERS, Page XX

Thumbs Up — An annual shipping container of donations from the community recently left Hinsdale to head to Tanzania, Africa, to the O’Brien School for the Maasai. Hinsdale residents Kellie O’Brien and her daughter, Heather, started the school six years ago and now it is educating 320 students in kindergarten through seventh grade. Kellie O’Brien and her brother, Norm, will meet the container when it arrives at its destination in late January or early February and help distribute its contents, which include 10,000 pencils, 15,000 pounds of food, 1,500 pairs of shoes and more. Thumbs Up — U.S. Rep. Dan Lipinski, D-3rd District, of Western Springs recently announced his nominations of 16 high school seniors from his district for admission to the U.S. service academies for the 2013-14 school year. Those nominated included students from La Grange, La Grange Park, Riverside, Berwyn and Burr Ridge. The students will be notified in January if they have been accepted. Many may not know exactly what the Downers Grove Township is, let alone what areas of southern DuPage it encompasses. Well, to better inform our residents, we would like to take this time to inform our readers just what the township is. First, it might be beneficial to inform the readers about the “where.” The township boundaries are 39th Street to the north, County Line Road to the east, the Des Plaines River to the south and Woodward Avenue to the west. Within these boundaries residents of the following villages benefit from our programs and services: Hinsdale, Clarendon Hills, Westmont, Downers Grove, Willowbrook, Burr Ridge, Darien and Woodridge. Now onto the “what” of the township. Our township consists of five offices: Frank Wurster the supervisor’s, Human Services, clerk, Highway Department and the assessor’s. Each of these offices has specific functions that help residents. Within the supervisor’s office, we administer general assistance programs for those in need and for those who are eligible under state and federal guidelines. Our Human Services office consists of social-emotional and prevention education programs, offered to local schools within the township. Additionally, we administer a Peer Jury program with local police departments in an effort to focus on restorative justice for teens. Lastly, this office offers senior citizen services programs to aid those who need assistance with many different needs, as they age. The clerk’s office is our official record keeper for township business. The Highway Department is responsible for upkeep on our 70 miles of unincorporated roadways and rights of way. Lastly, our assessor’s office works on determining the assessment of all property within the township. The assessor’s office also takes time to educate property owners regarding the assessment process and exemptions offered to residents. Empowering people with disabilities is the mission of the Ray Graham Association, whose group homes and other facilities offer volunteer opportunities ranging from helping clients craft valentines for their families to assisting the therapeutic horsemanship program, where three attendants are required for each rider. The horseback program, which can always use help, involved 160 youth volunteers in November alone, says Mary Beth Glenn, major gifts facilitator for the association. “Kids volunteer whose parents volunteered in the (riding) program; they loved it so much, they bring their kids,” Glenn says, noting it nurtures a habit of volunteerism. “They make friends, meet good kids who volunteer their time and … walk away from it not knowing who benefited the most from it.”

WHOM IT HELPS The organization has 35 facilities across DuPage County, but offers its services to everyone in the state and beyond its borders. Glenn says family members travel all the way from Wisconsin for the overnight

respite services provided caregivers. The association encompasses educational, vocational, community, early intervention, recreational, home-based and residential programs. The spirit of volunteerism travels full circle. The people who receive services from the association love to give back to the community, Glenn says. They help deliver food through Meals on Wheels, and assist at Feed My Starving Children in Aurora. Once a week, they serve dinner at the Downers Grove Community Church. Following their example, Ray Graham employees conducted a Christmas gift drive to help the Sharing

Volunteers age 13 and older can lend their time and talents. “We had a woman step forward who was a music therapist, and now comes to the Elmhurst Community Learning Center once a week and does music therapy,” Glenn says. “(It) fulfills her need to give back to the community.” She says people can arrange to visit a group home to provide companionship, play a board game, work a puzzle or read the newspaper with someone. And car lovers can support the organization by purchasing tickets to the Chicago Auto Show’s First Look for Charity at 7 p.m. Feb. 8 at McCormick Place in Chicago. The Ray Graham Association is one of 18 charities chosen by the Chicago Automobile Trade Association. For information on the $250 tickets, email Glenn. Stages of healing DVD captures play by co-founder of Midwest Shelter For Homeless Veterans

fter serving in Vietnam, it was a long road home for Bob Adams of Winfield, who fought to get his life back and became a licensed clinical social worker along the way. Adams — who has a private practice in Lombard — turned into a champion for fellow soldiers, both by treating post-traumatic stress disorder, and later by co-founding the Midwest Shelter for Homeless Veterans. His memoir, “Place of Angels,” was adapted into the one-man theater production a decade ago, whose most recent performance was just taped in Chicago starring Jeff Still. It’s the centerpiece of a DVD that will be available in coming months. Located in Wheaton, MSHV provides U.S. veterans of any era with transitional and affordable housing programs and supportive services to help them out of homelessness. It’s the only veteranspecific transitional housing program in DuPage County. How did the memoir come about? I wrote the memoir in 1999 (from) the stories I’d been telling for years. I (had) volunteered as technical adviser for plays about Vietnam, (and theater) people would say, “You tell the stories, why not write them down?” The memoir picks up with your 1960s preparatory seminary high school days. I decided to join the Navy with a friend on the buddy plan. I weighed 105 pounds and was blind in the left eye. I wouldn’t have gotten drafted, but the people at the recruiting center physical gave me the opportunity if I wanted to (enlist.) The last thing I wanted was to go (to Vietnam.) I thought by joining the Navy, I’d be offshore. I volunteered to become a hospital corpsman (and) ended up with a Marine platoon. I write about it from the point of view that I didn’t do it for my country or democracy. I did what I did for those men that I served with — my squad, my platoon, my company. That’s a more universal experience for veterans. It’s more about who’s there in front of you. How has the show been received? It’s what I hoped it would be. It makes people laugh, it makes them cry,

feel something and look at all of this in a somewhat different way than they might have. The main reasons for the DVD are education and therapeutic (use) — and it will (allow) some fundraising. (We’re) making it available to VA hospitals; they have PTSD clinics. That’s one of the places. How did the DVD arise? The idea … came from (retired Army) Col. Paul Herbert, director of the Cantigny First Division Museum, (who) came to see it staged in May, and said, “We’ve got to find some way to

preserve this.” The execution … was by Pam Kostecki, who is our newly minted director of operations — absolutely invaluable to getting it done. Other thoughts? Our mission is that we will leave no veteran behind to homelessness. When you’re in your homes, as it should be, warm and safe and cared for, please give a brief thought to those men and women who are on the street tonight — all of them — and particularly those who wore the uniform and afford us all the opportunity to live the lives we get to live.

NOTES Davanti Enoteca has chosen 800 W. Hillgrove Ave., Western Springs, as the newest location for its Italian rustic wine bar concept. Owned by Scott Harris, founder and CEO of Francesca Restaurants, the restaurant started in 2010 and has expanded to California and Arizona. The Western Springs location will be led by long time managing partner, Chris Elsey. The restaurant is scheduled to open in the first quarter of 2013 or shortly thereafter. After how the basketball gods treated Hinsdale Central boys basketball in the month of December, it would seem only fair that the Red Devils receive a few breaks in 2013. Currently in the midst of a 10-day layoff, the squad heads into the new year with a record of 6-5, a mark that could easily be better with just a little bit of luck. Hinsdale Central is coming off two heartbreaking, lastsecond losses at the Proviso West Holiday Tournament, including a buzzer-beating three-pointer which gave Hillcrest a 61-58 win Dec. 28 in the finale of the event for the Red Devils. In the tourney opener, the team watched as Jalen Brunson Next game made a jumper with 3.4 seconds left to give Stevenson a 56-54 Who: Hinsdale victory. We are going into the second third of the season where we are focused on basketball in the conference. “Hopefully we get back on track and start playing our best basketball in January and February.” The Red Devils do have a couple of positives to take out of the Proviso West tournament, beginning with the level of competition the team witnessed. “It is a great tournament,” Latorre said. “You see the best teams in the area and hopefully that toughens you up for the long haul of the season.” Also standing out was the play of sophomore forward Matt Rafferty, who averaged 18.3 points and 12.7 rebounds in the three games. “He is so steady,” Latorre said. “You can see it in his face and in how he plays. He is very steady and coachable and is really progressing nicely.”

High school hockey teams ‘have a blast’ playing games on outdoor ice rinks By DAN SANTAROMITA dsantaromita@shawmedia.com

Many hockey players get nostalgic about playing outside, whether it’s on a manicured rink or a frozen pond. The recent popularity of the NHL’s Winter Classic has given extra attention to the idea of playing outdoors and more area high school teams are jumping on the bandwagon. “It’s something every team should do,” said Glenbard coach Jason Hawkins. “We obviously picked it up from the NHL. We stole their idea and ran with it.” The Illinois High School Hockey League West Division, which features area teams Bartlett Wheaton West, Hinsdale Central, South Hockey and York, even took the name and Jan. 1 date from the NHL. “We’ve got what we call our Winter Classic games,” West commissioner Jim McKeague said. “We play at the Elmhurst YMCA for the varsity games and we play at the outdoor rink at Evergreen Park for the JV. There’s a total of eight games this year. It started out as two. They’ve been very successful.” For the third consecutive year, the Glenbard hockey club will play an outdoor game against PREP at the Watts Ice Center in Glencoe. This season’s matchup was set for Jan. 5. “The kids have a blast with it,” Hawkins said. “They put on the eye black even though we play our game at night. It’s a really great experience and we’ve had a lot of success with it.” Hawkins said that it usually takes the two teams a little bit to get acclimated to the new environment but after that, it is business as usual. “The first period, the teams are feeling it out, getting used to it,” he said. “But once they get comfortable, it gets really competitive. Both teams really want to win it.” Hinsdale Central has already played two outdoor games this season, one in Cicero and one in Elmhurst. The Red Devils faced Lyons Township in one of those matchups with Chicago Blackhawks coach Joel Quenneville dropping the puck. “It brings you back to old-style, oldschool hockey,” said Hinsdale Central coach Mike Rohdenburg. “Everybody really enjoyed it. It is different and a different

kind of environment but I liked it a lot.” “Hockey players just love playing outdoors or out on the pond,” LT coach Ricky Reznick said. “You’re playing in a different setting, you’re outside, you’re playing in a rink you’re not used to. It’s just a good night of hockey for both clubs participating in it.” While most players would enjoy an outdoor game, it’s not something that every program is doing yet. AWF coach Marc Pinto is in his first year with the team and hasn’t entertained the thought

of playing outside. Pinto admitted the ice conditions aren’t always the best outside and can slow down the play, however, he has fond memories of playing outside. “I grew up playing at the Elmhurst Y,” Pinto said. “Every now and then we’d skate with a bunch of guys." The Elmhurst YMCA is one of a few outdoor options available in the area along with the Evergreen Park Ice Rink and the Community Ice Rink in Cicero. Scott Schmid also contributed to the report.

A number of high school sports are forced to utilize co-op teams to make numbers for a full team. Hockey has one of the more complicated co-op set ups because there isn’t as much organization as there is with the Illinois High School Association for other sports. Last year the Amateur Hockey Association of Illinois decided to reorganize its co-op teams to group teams within districts and limit travel times for some of the players as much as possible. One of the worst travel set ups involved players from Montini, which played on the same team with players from Andrew in Tinley Park. Now, the Bronco hockey players are grouped with Addison Trail, Willowbrook and Fenton in a more local set up. “We looked at the high schools that made sense playing together,” said Illinois High School Hockey League West Division Commissioner Jim McKeague. The Glenbard Hockey Club got an addition this year as Glenbard East joined the group which already included Glenbard North, Glenbard South and Glenbard West. “They wanted to see more long-term solutions,” said Glenbard coach Jason Hawkins. “In the past, it was a lot more year to year. They wanted to make it more geographical-based. Solidifying the co-ops should help teams have long-term success. “And for us, it is a good thing for the players to be all together as a district.” Things are still a bit murky for the South Hockey Club, which includes players from Hinsdale South (seven) and Downers Grove South (five). Downers Grove North, which used to co-op with Lemont and Lockport, has three players on the varsity team, while there are a few Lemont and Lockport students who still play for the South Hockey JV team. The new redistricting rules are more geographically friendly, which is both a positive and negative for South Hockey. “I have football players from all three schools,” head coach Mike Dorich said. “In every other sport it’s a big rivalry for those schools and now they’re trying to form a team together. It’s hard to change that mentality.”

Reader provides more 426 Hemi news Q: Hello, Greg, I read your article on the Hemi and found a correction on the year available and some added historical facts. First, the 426 Hemi engine first roared to life in Chrysler’s dyno rooms in December 1963 and was coded the A-864 engine. Testing was in preparation for the targeted debut at the 1964 Daytona 500. By the race’s end, Hemipowered Dodge and Plymouth cars took four of the top five places as Richard Petty took the win by more than a lap. Actually, 1964 marked the first availability of the 426 Hemi in cars that could be ordered by the general public and street driven. While most were purchased for drag racing duty, anyone with money could walk into a Chrysler dealer and order a Hemi Dodge or Plymouth, get it licensed and drive it home. However, few customers were aware of this fact and, accordingly, very few were ordered and driven on the street. You mentioned the Ford 429 Hemi engine, which was actually a 427 in the development stage. In 1969 Ford fielded their own Hemi head design engine, the BOSS 429, which had good success against the Chrysler Hemi. Interestingly, the street versions of the Ford Boss 429 were only installed into 1969 or 1970 Boss 429 Mustangs (selling enough to qualify their Hemi headed engine design for

NASCAR involvement) yet only used in the Ford Talladega, a special Torinobased NASCAR aerodynamic design. In 1965, as you mentioned, Chrysler did not compete in NASCAR and no street-legal Hemis were sold. There was a 1965 special run of 100 Dodge and Plymouth drag race cars built, identiﬁed by “R0” VIN tag numbers for Plymouths and “W0” for Dodge while the Hemi engine package was called A-990. In 1966 Chrysler offered the 426 Hemi in any

of their Dodge and Plymouth B-body platform cars, including Dodge Coronet and Charger and Plymouth Belvedere and Satellite two-door, four-door, convertible and even station wagons in an effort to sell enough Hemis to make them a standard production engine.

NASCAR thus allowed them to compete again although limiting the Hemi to 405 inches for 1966 racing. The Street Hemi, as it is known, was a milder version of the original design and in a de-tuned state came in at 425 horsepower and 490 ft. lbs. of torque.

Hemis were very expensive to produce considering the cars they were available in cost around $3,000 and the Hemi alone added near $1,000 more! Accordingly total Hemi car production including all models combined sold between the ﬁrst available year of 1964 and the ﬁnal year of 1971 was just over 10,000 total units. 30-Year Fixed-Rate Mortgage Finishes Year Near Historic Low MCLEAN, Va., Dec. 27, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Freddie Mac (OTC: FMCC) today released the results of its Primary Mortgage Market Survey® (PMMS®), showing the average fixed mortgage rates finishing the year near record lows, helping to keep homebuyer affordability high. The 30-year fixed eased slightly this week to average 3.35 percent, while the 15-year fixed remained unchanged at 2.65 percent. News Facts 30-year fixed-rate mortgage (FRM) averaged 3.35 percent with an average 0.7 point for the week ending December 27, 2012, down from last week when it averaged 3.37 percent. Last year at this time, the 30-year FRM averaged 3.95 percent. 15-year FRM this week averaged 2.65 percent with an average 0.7 point, unchanged from last week when it averaged 2.65 percent. A year ago at this time, the 15-year FRM averaged 3.24 percent. 5-year Treasury-indexed hybrid adjustable-rate mort-

gage (ARM) averaged 2.70 percent this week with an average 0.7 point, down from last week when it averaged 2.71 percent.
